In this stand your center channel should sound very close to "as-designed". Make sure to keep your C-c as far forward on the glass shelf as shown in your photo and you'll be okay. the only C-C positional improvement I might suggest would be to try a small wedge under your C-c's base so that it points up directly as your ear level when seated.

Hi plhart:

Does putting a center speaker in a somewhat open stand like this: http://www.bdiusa.com/theater/icon_9429.shtml still mess up the center channel as badly?

Thanks!

I just bought this stand this weekend. I liked the way it looked and the wood finish and curvature in the design work well with some design influence in the living room. I haven't set it up yet, for two reasons: 1) moving on Feb. 7th, 2) no TV to put on it yet. :D

Once I'm closer to my moving date I'll be getting a television - hoping to see some better prices at that point (the particular set I'm looking at seems to be a bit "inflated" at the moment - at least relative to where I've seen it before).

Init TV Stand, purchased from Best Buy.

With employee discount, got it for ~$65.

Debating about going with a different stand already though, something wooden I'm hoping for.

pwjone1, admittedly, I have not seen the Salamander Synergy in person. From what I have read, the fit and finish issues are mainly to do with the wood panels. They sometimes arrive scratched and dented. Something else that I noticed in pictures is that when the doors are closed, there are noticeable gaps between the doors and the posts. In your case, these are non-issues.

About the Horizon N702, something else to consider is that it's made from solid wood. Some people want the strength and luxury of solid wood and others prefer MDF since it is less prone to warping.

I ended up ordering the Avion Noir 8539. Here's hoping everything goes well!

Fair enough. I've seen the BDI Avion Noir's, and they're a very nice TV stand. You'll be happy, I would think.

The Salamander Synergy's are kind of a some-assembly-required affair, and mostly the door alignment is then a function of how well put together they are. There's quite a bit of adjustment in the hinges:

http://www.salamanderdesigns.com/syn/downloads/instr_sd_v2.pdf

The instructions could be better, but provided the door is reasonably flat, you should be able to zero out the gaps, etc., or at least make them optimal. Where I've seen Synergies a lot is in high end AV dealers, they sell a lot there, use them, probably not surprising they get dinged. Anything wood would. And shipping, is, well, I received one box with a tire track on it, I try not to think about what happens there. At dealers, slso not a surprise that the doors get pulled out of alignment (if they ever were assembled that way originally). You see kind of the same sort of retail damage at an accelerated pace at a Best Buy or similar. Stores are an accelerated proving ground for this sort of thing, unfortunately. I do feel sorry for the dealers, never could figure out why people were so rough on the units.

I should note that Salamander has some stands that are closer to the BDI Avions, the Berlin and Madrid models. Those are much harder to find in person, but I've seen one, it was also very nice. I guess the things that keep me from going with a BDI are that it won't fit my center speaker (the one AV system I went and did what you're supposed to do, i.e. buy the speakers first, then work backwards, the center is however reasonably big), and the receiver is probably just a tad too hot for the BDI anyway. The Salamanders and Design Standouts and some of the others have provisions for fans to help out. At least BDI has the slots for somewhat passive cooling. So my search continues...

I don't know, I guess it's all personal choice and preference, our sense style is kind of something we inherit a lot from our society and environment, but I have to say, sometimes, it seems like we forget fundamentally what a stand is truly about. It's to hold stuff, so that we see the picture at an optimal height, sound seems to come from as close as possible to the screen, and in a fashion where the components can breath so they don't burn up (and we don't hear noise in the form of cooling fans). I don't know why everyone gets so wound up about hiding the cables (and some, I know, don't want to see the components). Well, fine, build it all in a closet. But for me, I'd just as soon keep it simple. I'd like to be able to see what sound mode the AVR/Amps have selected, like to see which input, and the stand setup there gets that done. But I'm an engineer, maybe seeing the components (and an occasional cable) is just the way it should be.

I just picked up a new 46" Sony LCD and am looking around at stands. It's been about a month now and I've been searching for the Whalen Furniture XL1 with no luck and have no Costco near me. I did however find another similar stand at an American Signature Furniture store near me. I was just hoping someone either has it or knows someone with one as I'd like to know the quality, moreso the quality of the mount. I don't want to be mounting my LCD on a mount that's going to come crashing down. Any info is appreciated.

I had almost forgotten to think of forum sponsors for furniture as well as AV equipment. Won't make that oversight again. John Marty at AxxisDurango is the real deal.

I've been looking for where to buy the BDI 8527 for the longest time now to start my home theater upgrade. Local dealers were more expensive than online dealers. I've never bought anything this expensive online before, so I wanted to be sure that I would be taken care of if any problems ever came up. Thanks to sbwtwo for highlighting that one of the forum sponsors, John Marty, also sells AV furniture. He has excellent reviews in this forum, which made me very comfortable purchasing from him. I hope I have better luck with my next purchase though.

It took about five weeks before I finally got to enjoy my stand. The first stand was stolen before delivery. The replacement stand was broken in various places that I didn't see when doing a quick inspection while the delivery guy was still around. BDI wouldn't take the stand back, but fortunately, the stand could be disassembled pretty easily in order to replace the pieces. John Marty was very professional in helping me with my problems. I'm not sure if I would've received this amazing customer service if I had bought from somewhere else that wasn't recommended through avsforum! :)

i love this stand! i have the longer version 8529 in cherry as well. i've had it for over 2 years and i still love and the way it looks! it's a solid piece of furniture. very well built and it looks awesome. i was debating on getting the shorter version or the 8529 and i'm glad i got the longer version. it works out better for me.

what size tv is that? i'm thinking of getting the optional mounts. i just traded my 46" (46V25L1) sony to a 52" sony (52WL140). awesome TV! :D

I also love the stand, it is awesome to say the least. Built like a tank! The optional mount is very slick and finishes the overall look. I have a 50" Pioneer Kuro Pro-110fd mounted to it. Your Sony would fit just fine as I have a lot of room to spare with my 50"er.

Yeah, it was quite annoying trying to deal with Whalen, only email I could find was their parts email address so I contacted them via that, and they refused to help me unless I needed parts. So I found that American Signature Furniture design that's quite similar (http://www.asfurniture.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?partNumber=1172166&langId=-1&Nao=26&numberOfResultsPerPage=12&referrer=shelfPage&storeId=10101&catalogId=10154&N=4294967183%200%204294967157&categoryId=4294967184#), not as elegant looking... was hoping someone had experience with it. The link's right there, can't include pictures since they're in some annoying Flash thing.

Thanks. How hard was it to mount? I just tried mounting the same TV on a Slam Brank Axio TV stand from costco (it's on their website now) at my mom's house. However, it didn't really feel secure on the mount so we took it down and just placed on top of the stand. The Axio stand is very nice, by the way, solid, modern looking, slick. The instructions say it supports up to 50" for mounting only and the TV was 52" so that may have been why but we're still happy with the stand even without the mounting.

This has been a fantastic thread. I've been looking for a nice piece of furniture for my plasma for a year. I was pretty demanding. It needed to look like a fine piece of furniture. Be sized for a future upgrade to a 60" TV. And needed to take a small, okay-sized center speaker. (Aesthetics equalled or actually trumped acoustical perfection.)

Thanks to NDRugby's post, I also chose the BDI Novia 8429 in Cherry. Buying experience from Michael at Dynamic Home Theater was wonderful. They use a wonderful delivery and setup service. $1750 total (incl. delivery). I'm temporarily using it with this 42" plasma and the Paradigm mains. I'll go to 60" when I can and I'm looking for a nice pair of wood shelves to go on either side (along with bookshelf speakers).

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=119349&stc=1&d=1221010705

I demoed several center speakers. Aesthetics was important in that I wanted it to fit inside the cabinet drawer. Sound had to be as best as my hearing can hear. I tried two $1000+ centers. One from ProAc. Then I tried this $160 Aperion Audio Intimus 4C and it sounds wonderful. In this cabinet it sounds wonderful. It is perfectly sized. (Mind you, I only tested for home-theater & TV.)
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=119353&stc=1&d=1221010175
It fits inside the cabinet perfectly. (For large centers, you can remove the drawer. But I liked the look of the drawer in place.)

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=119350&stc=1&d=1221010175

As a wonderful bonus, the cabinet is built great. Solid. Has wheels. Cable management. Ventilation management. And it hides the equipment nicely.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=119351&stc=1&d=1221010175

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=119352&stc=1&d=1221010175

I love my setup and sound. After having discovered the BDI here, I wanted to give back something and highly recommend this cabinet and center speaker.

Erik

I like this one as it looks like furniture, I like the BDI marina in black and also the BDI Cassini
I think a 60" Pioneer will look great on all 3:)

Stan, I haven't bought a Plateau stand but they look nice and would apparently meet my size requirements described above. I'm adding the 65" stand to my short list, although I'm not a fan of the aluminum trim.

Here's an image of the 65" stand, dimensions are 65" W x 19" H x 22" D, web price is $999:

Side openings are 20" and center opening is either 23" or 33", and the finish is either espresso or cherry.

FYI, I went to the website at www.plateaucorp.com and clicked on the Contact Us link to request a list of dealers. The company sent me an email offering 20% off the web price, with free shipping and no tax. So if anyone is considering Plateau, it's worth requesting the dealer list to get this deal!

I really like this brown(espresso) one in 75" price seems right too.

Starguard, Conroy9, and others looking for that Whalen XL-1 stand:

Maybe I'm wrong, but I saw either that stand or something very, very much like it at Haynes Furniture on West Broad Street in Richmond during the week before Christmas. The stand that I saw is on the third row of pics here on the Haynes site:
http://www.haynesfurniture.com/HomeTheater.html

It had Z-shaped, nicely curved legs in a rich medium wood tone. Since I was looking for something different, I didn't note the brand or price, sorry.

Haynes has stores elsewhere in Virginia and N. Carolina. If you call the West Broad St. store looking for this stand, you can tell them that it was on display about midway through the (enormous) store.

The XL-1 doesn't show up on the Costco website, but they had plenty in stock at the local store when I went and got mine. I don't think Costco really tries to keep the website in sync with stock the B&M locations have.

That is the stand I use with my 50" plasma. I went to circuit city and best buy prepared to spend considerably more (400+) for a stand. I was disappointed in the selection of stands at bb and cc. I went over to another furniture store and picked that A/S stand up. The wood on the sides are solid wood. The metal is strong and so far no issues with supporting the tv. It also has a swivel feature. Some drawbacks, the stain used on the wood isn't the best, the glass shelves are only rated to hold 35 or so pounds and the glass shelves are held in place by suction cups. Overall I think its a good value for 249.

My Vizio 50" Plasma is 121.7 pounds. The technical details say the stand could hold 135 pounds... Do you think that is true? I'm kind of worried about how heavy my Plasma is.

I dig the swivel option. Exactly what I need. Something with drawers, however would be awesome, but I think I can live without that for now.

Now--where can I get one of these? I live in (relatively) rural Western North Carolina and their website doesn't list any dealers near there. Thoughts?

tgferg67,

The stand looks really nice. I'm looking to change my current stand but I'm a little cautious as I like the height where my TV sits right now. Is there a height adjustment? Would you be able to measure from the top outside frame of your tv to the floor? Also, what's the size of your tv? Okay, that's it for the questions, for now.... lol :)

... I agree that this can be a hassle. I have to do that with my cabinet (open/close for usage). On the other hand, I really like the clean, tidy look of being able to hide your gear completely when not in use. nothing's perfect, I guess.

Check out this unique stand, I really liked the design not to mention the price.

Interesting. Not sure how much I like it, but it's certainly nice to see something different from the usual design fare for a change.

Hope Standout Designs has a Superbowl sale because their stands sure went up when the holiday sale ended  I wanted to order a N701 while they were on sale but because I was going to be gone during the holidays I waited figuring I would order over New Years. I went to order on Jan 1 and bam the prices went back up by $200.00 and no more free shipping.

My fault. You snooze you loose

After much trepadation (), I went to the local Thomasville store and bought their "Multimedia" cabinet. Sorry, :(no picture, not even on their website cause the lady says the model is brand new. About 70" wide, 20" deep, and 30" high. Middle has 2 doors that opens to a total of 30" and has 3 glass shelves. Side doors open to about 15". Has a power strip and we went with the Mocha color - sorta a dark brown. Fabric, glass or wood pieces to cover the doors. Delivery in 2-3 weeks. $1499 with free delivery.

That being said, if I were on a budget, I'd have probably gone with the Cosco Shemar piece currently available in their stores.

anyone has the tv stand listed at Costco.com ? I believe the same one is sold at the store for $499.

will this stand 66" wide be too big for the 52" LCD TV ?

Love to hear some feedback. Thanks..

Update: Sorry about the subject. The stand is made by Bayside Furnishings and Not by Whalen.

I'm pretty sure Bayside Furnishings is a division of Whalen

Just want to share that after a LOT of research, I ordered the BDI Avion 8527 from AxxisDurango (forum sponsor) for the best price and, well, the fastest delivery experience I have ever had! I placed the order by phone on Wednesday afternoon and Friday morning received a call from their shipper, Roadway, that they were ready to schedule delivery. This stand shipped from MO (several states away). It arrived in perfect condition. Great experience. Axxis was in constant contact with me. My local Roadway center rep was very pleasant and the delivery guy had a sense of humor, even at the end of a full day of deliveries.

I had almost forgotten to think of forum sponsors for furniture as well as AV equipment. Won't make that oversight again. John Marty at AxxisDurango is the real deal.

Oh, and the stand is exactly what I wanted. Solid construction, contemporary design, appropriate height for my HDTV, lots of vented storage for my components... If you've wondered about it from the pictures you see on the web, it really is a nice piece. (Of course, I cheated in that a local contemporary furniture merchant had this on display for a higher and taxable price.) And I have never seen anything packed as well. It came attached to a pallet, cardboard box, lined with plywood sides up against Styrofoam cushioning.

It is a lot of money for a stand, but when I buy furniture, I buy for the duration.

Hi sbwtwo. I searched the board/forum and Google for Axxis Durango, but nothing came back. CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME!? Thanks.

I just picked this TV stand up from Costco for $375. I've always liked the BDI Avion series and this is similar. It's the Savante Shemore. Build quality is surprisingly good and there are lots of great features like 4 slide-out shelves, removable back doors, and interchangeable door panels (solid wood, glass, and mesh). HD equipment is coming in a few weeks.

Just an update on this entertainment center. I'm going to my local Costco to pick one up tomorrow for $389. Best Bang for your buck as far as i'm concerned, after looking everywhere,(including every page in this long(AND VERY GOOD) thread, and not wanting to spend more than about $800. Will be placing a 47'' 120hz SV470XVT on top of this sucker. The guy said to me "Wow, i cant believe i've actually got this item in stock, i haven't seen them in over 3 months." He had 21 of them when i called. Will take pictures when finally setup.

here's some quick specs.

For $389 it beat the price of most solid and veneer TV stands which have far less features than this one. All three doors come with matching wood panel, glass, or cloth-grill for your choice of look and function. Four metal-rail sliding shelves (two at each end) for easy component placements. Each shelf and the floor of each end have a metal mesh-grill so that heat can disapate easily out the vented back. The center has an adjustable shelf and a power strip in the back so all component wires are easily hidden, then the single wire from the power strip goes to the wall. Even the back of the stand has removable sections for complete easy access to the rears of components. The backs are cleverly held with magnets and easily removed for access without any tools. The finish is smooth, dark wood, with touch of craftsmanship with curved front corners. Although you see four peg feet at each corner, for strength there are also two not-visible planks toward the center to support the center weight if you place a TV on top (it supports up to 200lbs!).

- metal mesh vented sliding shelves and bottom
- removable magnetic finished wood backs with cable slots for access to equipment
- glass/wood/mesh door options
- all 3 doors come with interchangeable pieces
- integrated power strip in middle cabnet
- Completely assembled

tgferg67,

The stand looks really nice. I'm looking to change my current stand but I'm a little cautious as I like the height where my TV sits right now. Is there a height adjustment? Would you be able to measure from the top outside frame of your tv to the floor? Also, what's the size of your tv? Okay, that's it for the questions, for now.... lol :)

bidzer,
There is a height adjustment. The top of the TV is 59" from the floor.
It can go 3 1/4 higher or "one" increment lower of 2"(all I would be comfortable with die to bracket design). The TV is a 42" Panasonic PX80U series.

Thinking of going with this stand for my new Panny 58-800. The center area has more than enough room for my scs center. And I probably wont install the two drawers under but instead just leave it open for the avr and set top box..

Its so hard to find the "right" stand. This one seems to be what I want though.. its 67 inches in length.. so it will be 5 inches longer than the TV on both sides.. I dont know if I like that..Will it make the TV look small? Im so fricken anal.

Less than $200 I think its a score.... 5 inches on each side though.. ahhhh!!!

Im already doubting this stand.... your comments arent helping! ;)

I need a stand under $400. In fact, I really dont even want to spend that much.

I came across this one too http://common.csnstores.com/Tech-Craft-Bernini-Series-60-Plasma%2F-LCD-TV-Stand-in-Black~img~TC~TC0206_l.jpg

But I dont know about the glass.. I like wood.. I think I like that industrial look

Damn scs center is ruining it for me. Its 7''L x 20''W And I might upgrade to a a 340se center.. which is a tad bigger at 7.5 x 21

I think finding a TV stand is harder than actually choosing on the AV equipment.

I am researching for a TV stand and came up the BDI Deploy Max 9649. It has caster/wheels so I can move the LCD TV to reach the back panel. Thesedays, it is a two-man's job to move it. However, all the dealers across board ask the same firm MSRP of $759. A price fixing? Is there any alternateve for a large size TV and has caster/wheel design? BDI design is mature but overpriced. A TV stand costs 25~30% of the TV. Should I buy a cheap wood stand at IKEA and add wheels on. The wheel/caster of a grand piano looks nice or I will pay $300 for that.

I searched for months trying to find just the right look and functionality for a wall unit. My previous E-center build was a "built-in" -- the kind that typically has the TV unit in the center and a shelfing on both sides of the TV. This time I did'nt want so much wood, a more open look... so here is the design a came up with. The custom-built cradenze is large and is plenty of room for components, media, etc. The custom wall unit also stores media and speakers, and matches the decor of the house. Just thought I'd share in case someone else wanted to use something limilar.

I am still waiting to purchase the TV....

Im afraid you are out of luck. The center slot will fit a 20" center vertically though. Im going to mount the center above the TV on the wall, and put my htpc in the center slot.

Does anybody who owns the Slam Brands Shemore stand form Costco know the exact maximum height of the center shelf? I would like to place my center channel vertically in the center shelf and just wanted to know if it will just fit or if I will have no choice but to place the speaker on top of the unit instead.

I can't decide what to do. I currently have a Sanus PFPL in Silver (they didn't make it in black then). It worked really well for my old TV:

I really liked the height the TV was at. However, it doesn't work as well for the new TV:

the TV is a bit lower, and I liked the old height. Also, the other problem is that while it looks fairly wide it's just a bit too narrow - if the side posts weren't so big I could move my PS3 up on the top shelf, but as it is the thing is packed:

and there is no more room for gear! That's horrible!

So I'm deciding what to do. I can't go with a three wide unit - I don't have room (they're about 65" usually). I need to stick with something that's a two wide unit like I have (around 42" or so). I've only come up with two options, both from Salamander:

Synchro Furniture Mate which is kind of a cool stand thing, if I can get the fork part under my current stand. It could let me move the TV up off the top of the stand and put my center channel up there, move my PS3 up to the top shelf, and then when I get my Oppo 983H or DVDO Edge (haven't decided yet) it could go below the cable box.

Another option I've found, also from Salamander, is Synergy Twin 30 with Center Speaker Shelf. That unit would let me do the same thing - get the TV back up a bit higher, (and also get the center channel level with the fronts!), and since you can use all the width I can put the PS3, 360, and Center on the top shelf and then have the cable box, Wii, and Mac on the middle shelf. I like that idea since it doesn't have any gear really stacked.

If anyone has any similar ideas I'd love to hear them.

JakiChan

What size is your TV ? I know the BDI Avion 8528 would hold 5, possibly 6 components and it's 42 inches long 31 inches high and 22 inches deep. It's may be too high for your purpose as the Sanus is only 20 inches high. The only other issue may be cost as it lists for $1399.00 and is suited for up to a 43 inch TV.

Hey guys,

I am looking for an affordable, slim TV stand for my bedroom. I like the looks of this stand above, but I don't know where I can get it. I can't find it on Costco's webpage; help?

I have about $300 to spend and I have a 50" Plasma. Thanks for the help!

Nice stand and TV.

OK, seems a silly question, but sorry, I have to ask...

Looks like the picture was taken with you standing or at least above couch level, and even so, maybe parts of the picture are blocked by the center speaker (soundbar?). Is that the case?

I like BDI stands, they have nice contemporary styling which matches up well with most of the TV panels, but they can run a bit tight on space in the cabinet for a center, so I think many people do like you, go external, but then that can also be limiting in terms of either shifting the screen higher than optimal, or blocking the screen if that wasn't done.

(By way of observation, I had a Novabeam 78" front projector at one time, and Kloss shot the center speaker then so that it reflected off the screen, worked pretty nicely and the voices came across as coming directly from the screen. I miss that with the current setups, unfortunately).

I went with a friend who has Costco membership and looked at it, but the build quality wasn't exactly what I was looking for. Not that it was Walmart bad, just not the same as some Cost Plus solid pieces that I have. Anyhow, Cost Plus has a couple solid stands on-sale, but they may be a bit small for my new Panny 58":

The first is 57", so that should work, but the other two are 54". Is that too small? Downside is I''ll need a separate AV rack and not sure on center channel placement.

ok...so Ive spent a good part of my day trying to track me down one of those sweet whalen display's(the xl-1 or the kind found at costco). My costco didnt have it, my walmart didnt have it(although there was a pamphlet that showed the correct model...but no luck about having it in stock), my target didnt have it......my home value furniture didnt have it....you getting the pattern? Where in the hell do I find this thing? I live in chicago and have my mind set on this stand!!! I also spent an hour on the phone talking to different walmart's to see if they had this thingand I mainly spoke to clueless people. I am very frustrated. Please help!

You are correct, the speaker blocks about a 1/2 inch of the screen. It is such a large screen though that it doesnt cause viewing issues in the least. I am very unsatisfied with the YSP soundbar and am looking forward to having a real 5.1 or 6.1 surround sound system, in the near future.

Its really a catch 22 with the stands. You can either have an area to fit a large (tall) center, but then have the stand too tall for proper viewing. Or you can have a stand at the optimal height and not have the needed speaker clearance. I think the key is to buy a center channel under 8". The Avion can actually take the height of the speaker internally, just not the width. The drawer can be removed to give you 8.5 inches.

I have never actually heard of the Novabeam. That must of been before my time.

I guess I would want to see the bottom of the screen, but maybe that's just me. When I was growing up, my parents had a TV screen with overscan so bad, that the bottom inch or two was just missing. Never bothered them, but I liked to watch sports, and the scores were always at the bottom. So I guess it all comes down to viewing habits and needs.

My recollection is that some BDI models (yours is an Avion, right?), can have back attachments that let you attach the screen to the unit, which would then let it elevate it a bit. Here's an example:

http://www.bdiusa.com/theater/graphics/cabinets/large_images/avion_8540_2.jpg

of what I mean. Might get you screen clearance, and not raise things up all that far.

I am sympathetic to your speaker size/placement problem. My center speaker is a Definitive Tech C/L/R 2500, which at 23.5" wide and roughly 8" high:

http://www.definitivetech.com/images/products/C/L/R2500/slider/CLR2500_slider.jpg

sounds great, but is proving difficult to find a TV-stand for. I'm trying to get it on the shelf below the TV, to keep the TV screen at reasonable height, sort of like what you're trying to do. The receiver is also about 8" high, 18.1" deep, and the combination doesn't work for most stands. The search there, continues...

Good luck with your setup. Great looking TV and stand!

Thanks. I understand what you mean. I watch Sports alot on the TV and have never has an issue with the score. I never really noticed it. I guess most sports stations put the score on the top.

One thing that has made it bothersome is Closed Captions. My brother in law is deaf and when we put on the closed captions it sometimes cuts off the the bottom half of the bottom row of words.

I would have the mounting bars in the picture but my TV is a rear pro, so it is not mountable.

The Avion would work for your speaker though. You would just need to remove the drawer. It gives you 8.5 inches of clearance.

Well, I hadn't thought to remove the drawer. The dimensions that BDI has on its web site show a 7" height:

http://www.bdiusa.com/theater/graphics/spec_images/standard/avion_8527.gif

which would be insufficient for my 8" requirement, and a 22.5" (vs 23.5") width. But maybe that's less if the drawer is removed.

I couldn't find a stand for my Pioneer 60" that had enough room for my center channel, didn't cost as much as the TV and wasn't too large for where I was going to put it.

So...I had this one custom made. It's 62" wide, made of solid red oak and oak veneer plywood. The shelves on the right and left side are adjustable, while the center shelf is fixed. It's sturdy with plenty of room for my components and was less than $500.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to put doors on the left and right side; And if so, I have to figure out if I want tinted glass or the kind made with speaker fabric material. I also may add a few more ventilation holes.

I got my stand the other day and my tv arrived today so I though I would share some pics. :) I went with the Whalen stand from Samsclub (http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=379276).

Btw, in case anyone was wondering the tv is a 40", I was worried it wouldn't look right on a 52" stand but it looks PERFECT.. imo. :D

I am in the process of buying a 50" plasma TV for a corner of my family. I have looking for a corner TV stand for awhile now and haven't found one that is not too high or expensive. I could be flexible with the price $300-$500 range. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks!

Does anyone know if the Shemore is still available at Costco? I can't find it on their website...

Also, if you happen to know the dimensions of the box that would be great too. We're planning on picking up the Vizio 50" XVT plasma there and want to know if I can get both in the car at the same time...

Thanks!

My Dad picked up this stand and after setting the TV on it I noticed the same thing, it was tilted to one side, so we took off the TV and made some adjustments to where the mount attaches to the main pole and got it just right, but it definitely wasn't correct out of the box.

Just picked one up at Costco last week. The box dimensions are (if I remember correctly) 61" x 23" x 28". I doubt both would fit in any kind of car. I have an Audi wagon and the Shemore stand might have just fit with the seats down. We were actually able to fit a 52" Samsung LCD in our car although it was removed from the box - wouldn't recommend doing that though. Hope this helps some...

It's not most people's cup of tea, but I like it. I built it out of MDF and allthread totaling about $30. It's easy to reconfigure, has great ventilation, and looks simple and unobtrusive.

It's actually rock solid. Those are 3/4 thick pieces of MDF with holes drilled at all four corners. The allthread (long, threaded steel rod) goes through the hole, then the MDF is held in place by fender washers and nuts. A washer and nut goes on each side of the MDF shelf, and are tightened against the shelf, pinching it in place. When everything is tightened down, it has no movement whatsoever, and is very, very strong.

I like the industrial look the exposed nuts and threading give it.

I'm thinking about getting one of those "floater" stands, probably the "Bayside Skyline" from Costco:

http://www.baysidefurnishings.com/products/entertainment/xlol54tc.html

http://www.baysidefurnishings.com/shared/product-images/xlol54tc.jpg

My one concern is that it's been mentioned before that the floating stand needs to be bolted to a wall stud. Is that really true, or is it more of a belt-and-suspenders approach?

The main reason to get a stand like that is to give the illusion of a wall mount without actually drilling into the wall! :p

FWIW -- I have a 50" Vizio VP50, weight is 108 lbs, and the specs say it is rated for 165 lbs.

I have that same stand. The bolt on the wall is just a screw and a piece of plastic nylon attached to the frame of the stand. I don't think it's supposed to hold the TV but can help for the stand not to tip over. I just moved into a new place and didn't even bother re-connecting that bolt on the wall. I have a 52" Samsung LN550 on it and it can hold it with no problems.

Cool, I kinda figured that was the case.

Since you have that same stand, I have a quick question -- how is the cable management? I assume the center column is hollow? And if so are there plenty of holes at different heights to easily get wires in and out?

Thanks, but probably not. I did look pretty seriously at the Avion Noir model, trying to stay all-black (speakers are black, etc.). I have found the BDI product support excellent, they answered e-mails and so forth quickly. Ultimately though, I'm probably going to try and get something more open, for two reasons mainly:

I'd like to be able to see the displays of the AVR, Cable/DVR, etc.
The receiver runs pretty hot, not sure any enclosed arrangement is get it enough air (at least without fans, which bring noise)

I suppose I should add, the TV is off in essentially its own room, and I'm lucky to have a spouse that pretty much will let me buy whatever I want. WAF is not therefore a determining factor (and yes, I do realize I'm lucky :) )

My quest for an open stand is somewhat covered over in another thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1099923

if anyone's interested. Because of the height/width of the speaker, and the weight of the receiver, and the fact I'd like two shelves, it's proving somewhat difficult.

Nice stand, a bit reminiscent of the the older Salmander Archetype line:

http://www.salamanderdesigns.com/archetype/imgs/arc_a3blk.jpg

I guess a fair amount of people now have done something similar, including some other TV stand vendors. I agree with you, I kind of like the functional look of the stand, seems kind of odd to me that people buy really high-tech contemporary/modern looking TVs and speakers and components, and then do their best to bury it in some huge heavy wood thing where you can't see any of it, the components overheat (or it needs noisy fans to cool), plus looks like it was made sometime like 1920. But I suppose, it's all personal preference, have to accept that is different with different people.

I've debated building a stand like yours myself, maybe a little closer to the TV-65 stand from Salamander (out to the width of the TV, kind of lower/wider). I'd just buy the Salamander one, the cost is not the problem for me so much as the time to do the build, but the Salamander center position, where my speaker would need to go, is too narrow, I need 23.5"+ and the stand itself has not as much depth as my receiver (although it's probably close enough to at least get the legs down on the shelf). I guess one thing keeping me from doing my own is the finishing of the wood. My Dad built a lot of woodwork, I helped, but getting the right finish is not trivial, involving a lot of coats, sanding, time, etc. Drilling the holes would be pretty easy, comparatively. Probably I'd go for all black, some parts would be easier that way, some not so much.

If you don't mind my asking, where did you get the MDF? How thick did you go? Anyone know where to get some specs on what the weight and weight support characteristics would be?

Thanks

You can buy 3/4" thick MDF at your local hardware store like Lowes or Home Depot. I went with 3/4" because it's readily available and very strong. If you're worried about it sagging over a long span, just put a couple rods through the back edge to give it support in the middle of the span.

So far as finishing goes, it's not something you really have to worry about using MDF since it's already perfectly flat and smooth, and you can just slap a coat of paint on there and it will look nice. I once built a large sub out of MDF, and it just took two layers of black paint applied with a roller to make it look good; no sanding.

One of the greatest things about this design is it allows you to completely customize the unit, and reconfigure as needed.

What about the threading, also all available at HD? What size did you use? Same exact specs as the Flexy stand? (http://www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/flexye.html)

I'm trying to do something similar, but need to mess with it as based on the wood I have (have some match scrap I want to use) I probably won't be able to thread bolts all the way through. I also don't have a drill capable of putting in those holes at the moment :)

Similar, except I use four legs, and no neoprene washers. Same concept though.

Yup, the threaded rod is available at HD or your local hardware store of choice. I use 5/8".

Why can't you put the rods all the way through? You don't have a drill?

Yes the center column is hallow and has holes at different heights. I just learned though it's easier to run the cables without the TV mounted..ha ha..so when i moved (a couple of weeks ago) i made sure all the cables are hidden are ran into the column.

I really need help on a stand for a new Pioneer PDP-6020FD. I’ve spent at least 100 hours looking for what I want, gone to hundreds of Internet sites, contacted numerous vendors, and have still utterly failed. All the stands/mounts that I’ve liked were either: not for sale in the US, won’t work with a 60”, can’t support the weight, or don’t support the 850mmX500mm holes on the back of this monster. Amazing what’s out there for 50” and below, but they just haven’t caught up for 60 inchers!

What I’m looking for is a fairly heavy duty, ultra-modern, silver, glass, or black stand with one or two poles that actually support the TV (prefer one pole). I decided not to use a wall mount due to cinder block being behind the drywall and I also need something to hold several audio/media components (vsx-1018ah-k, bdp-51fd, sa 8300 HD, & origen S10). (Although I did purchase a PDR PDM750F-11 for it; more on that in my questions). I don’t really like the salamander or any of the other zillion dresser/bureau-like component stands….Simply not sleek enough for my taste. I’m perfectly willing to do a little “modding” if the stand will be safe and not look rediculus. I.e. can I adapt the PDM750F-11 to one of the pole stands that will fit the x-large hole spacing.

Omnimount has some really nice ones but they just won’t work on this monster. Damn! I’ve contacted almost every mount/stand manufacturer out there and they have all confirmed that they have nothing that I liked will work with the 6020 (this includes Whalen, Bello, BDI, Sanus, Omnimount, Walker Edison, etc..)

The only one I’ve found that works is the Salamander tri/quad WITH their expansion kit. And, I find their stuff overpriced (almost $600 for just the mount!) and very traditional looking.

So, long winded story to ask two questions:
1) Does anyone have a stand similar to what I’m looking for that works with the 6020.

I have this stand sitting in a box ready to assemble in a few weeks when I move. I'll be mounting a 5020 to it, and reading its specs (with speaker attached) and the specs of your 550 it seems they're both approximately the same height.

I was wondering how much clearance you have below the TV once it is mounted? Just wondering if I'll have room for my center speaker. If I won't have room for the center speaker with it mounted I'll save some time and just put the stand together so I can sit it on the top shelf.

Also, if I may, since you've moved with the stand, how difficult is it to handle and move once assembled? I'm debating whether to go ahead and assemble it before the move so I have somewhere to sit the TV when I break it in (though I won't be attaching it to the mount until I finish the move obviously).

Glad to hear the "tip restraint" thing is just a suggestion though, I was worried whether I'd really want to attach it to the wall where I'll be renting.

I did not dismantle the stand except removed the glass tops. I just dismounted my TV and boxed all my components. The stand fit easily in my bro-in-laws Honda Pilot.

2) Is anyone using the BDI Odeon 9940, Bello FP-2125, Whalen 3-in-1, Walker Edison 4-in-1 rigged with a rigged, separate mount that allows them to work (note: All these vendors stated that those models will not work w/the 6020)?
PS. I’ve read every furniture and non-elite 9G posting, conducted dozen of searches and can’t find the answers I seek. I’ll put this in the furniture thread also, but believe that this thread is more appropriate given that the 6020 owners are here!

You have my sympathies. It does seem like the bulk of the display stands are made for 42 and 46 inch or smaller displays, looking at the numbers for what's selling, they're actually missing quite a bit of the market, but furniture has pretty much always been like that, slow to follow.

I guess I'll start off by pointing out the obvious, which you've probably discounted already. Premier does make a mount that can go behind just about anything, here's the URL:

http://www.premiermounts.com/product.asp?ProductID=8371&PartID=1485&curimage=1

Using that, you could buy a base unit, and put this up under/behind, have to watch clearances of course. You already have the PDR PDM750F-11 mount already, I suppose you could still wall mount that (more on that below). Sanus is another mount manufacturer that makes something that will work with the panel. I looked up the weight, looks like the Pioneer is 168 pounds, so not a light weight.

By the way, cinder block is actually perfectly wall mountable, maybe a bit trickier, but done right, sometimes a little easier (you only really have to avoid the joints, so the mounting hardware has a much bigger area to hit. Drilling the holes for the mounts is a bit trickier, you would need the appropriate masonry drill bit(s) and a proper electric drill, probably a trip to a good hardware store would get the right bolts or lag screws, there are also some newer coated screws. I remember hanging a bed, that was over 100 pounds per anchor. So it can be done. Here's a little tutorial:

http://www.acehardware.com/sm-installing-masonry-anchors--bg-1283458.html

and a URL from one source of fasteners:

http://www.confast.com/concrete-fasteners.aspx

But anyway, getting back to the original is-there-a-stand question, you do list off the components, to help with the search:

Is a stand where the panel sits on top acceptable?
What's your center speaker?

There area a number of stands that are wide enough, and will support 168 pounds, it's where you want to elevate the TV panel that gets tricky. Frequently the attached panel supports max out for lighter TVs, in the 100-125 pound range. Some elevate and throw the center speaker on top, needed if it's a bulky one, but if your center can fit in the cabinet, then it becomes somewhat easier to sit the TV on the stand, that lowers the TV, makes it more at eye level, which will be less fatiguing to watch. If you went the TV on the stand option, here's how it might look:

http://www.jonalexander.com/D6024b.jpg

http://www.jonalexander.com/entertainment-centers-contemporary-furniture.html

This unit is rated for 200 pounds on top, should in theory be enough, and you can order it with black finish, 65" wide. The Jon Alexander stands are direct order, and are built stronger/heavier compared to a number of other stands out there, just a tad bigger also, which means some of the newer/bigger components will fit on the shelves, and still have room to breath. Remember that open stands are great for keeping components cool, but you need enough clearance on top for them to breath properly.

BDI also makes a couple of models, one would be:

http://www.bdiusa.com/theater/graphics/stands/product_images/deploy_max_9640.jpg

http://www.bdiusa.com/theater/deploy_max_9640.shtml

This goes to 225 pounds on top. The Deploy Max are built of glass and steel, a bit sturdier then most of the other BDI models, and certainly the look here is contemporary. Shelf space is down a bit from the Jon Alexander D-6024B, depending on your center speaker weight and size, it might have to go on the bottom, a little less than optimal. But at least another possible option.

I will close with noting that some of the Bello stands go up to 165 pounds, which is 3 pounds light, but... the 168 pounds for your TV might just make it with the bottom stand removed, which would be the case if you back mounted. But you'd need to do a little legwork, figure out what the base actually weight (or better yet, what the TV weighs without it), and then if you want to run that close to the weight ratings on the TV stand. Not a bad idea to go for a bit of margin, to my way of thinking.

Anyway, if you could give us some further input, the questions above, maybe someone can come up with further options for you.

Here is another option, a bit closer to what it sounds like you may be after, found on the new Bello product listing. Goes to 175 pounds:

http://www.bello.com/images/products/FP-2125_DD_Oct08.jpg

http://www.bello.com/index.php?partition=show_product&prod_id=230&categ_id=39

I'm not sure if I look at this unit as pure contemporary in the normal sense, the wood accent kind of gets in the way, and you'd have to double check if the mounting holes would work for your panel, but it's at least close.

PWJONE1 - Thank you for your posts! They were somewhat helpful. However, the hunt continues....

To answer some of your questions - The 6020 weight is not 168 lbs. Here are the specs from the manual: Main unit: 50.8 kg (112.0 lbs), Stand: 5.3 kg (11.7 lbs)(including bolts), Speaker: 3.7 kg (8.2 lbs), (including cables, mounting fittings and screws), Total: 59.8 kg (131.8 lbs) -

Not quite 168. Hopefully, I will have it mounted on some sort of pole(s) support, eliminating the stand, making it a new total of 130.1 lbs.

"Is a stand where the panel sits on top acceptable?" - No, I'd prefer that it not be; again, wanting it mounted up a bit on pole(s) for ascetics, ease of installation, and center speaker reasons (although the relatively small center speaker could go in most cabinets).

"What's your center speaker?" - Center speaker is a Klipsch SL Quintet one; LCR - 20.5" (52.1cm) H x 5.5" (14cm) W x 5.6" (14.2cm) D

It would be nifty to have the center speaker right under the TV (to block the large gap created by the now missing 6020 OEM speaker) and have the sub-woofer below in the center cabinet (Klipsch Sub 10 (17" H x 14" W x 18.9" D). But that's probably a pipe dream.

Another option is go with the wall mount into the cinder block (thanks for your links!) and use Omni mount wall furniture (tria3 or MWFS). I'm leaning towards this solution as I think the wall furniture looks slick and ultra-mod, but would prefer the "non-permanency" & mobility of a stand with poles (plus mounting into the cinder block is going to be very arduous and messy). Also, my receiver iand other gear is a tad heavy for the glass shelves...but it should work....(may have to puarchase additional shelves).

The premiermounts, recommended by Pioneer itself, would probably work. However, I'd have to get the mount ($160), the premiermount dual pole ($550) and some sort of modern sturdy stand such as the BDI Avion Noire or Deploy Max ($1500 or $800 respectively). Expensive solution. Also worried that the dual pole mount may not slide under a stand without some sawing or modification; a painful and expensive fix to an expensive piece of furniture. However, it still remains a good looking viable optiion. Has anyone else here gone with this or a variant of this as a mounting solution for the 6020?

Regarding the Bello FP-2125...I like it! (except the cheesy wood front which I can spray paint or stain and the cheap looking mesh which I can dremel off). Overall, it's good looking, sturdy, fits the bill, and affordable. But, Bello stated that none of their mounts will support the 6020 with its abnormally large bracket holes - 850mmX500mm vs. the normal max of 800mmX450mm (Bello's, and most others, max support). Hence my question of, "can I remove the Bello mount and use the PDR PDM750F-11 (or another mount) in its place....will that work? In fact...not only mount wise, but will the space between bottom of 6020 and stand be enough? Same question, as previously stated, applies to the BDI Odeon 9940, Whalen 3-in-1, Walker Edison 4-in-1. Basically, is anyone using these stands (pole type mount), with some sort of modded-mount rigging, on the 6020?

So, I am putting this thing together and after an hour or so, I go to put the back panel on and a sticker says max HDTV size 42" and 100 lbs or max CRT size 32" and 130 lbs. It didn't say anywhere before purchasing.

Plus, why would a 57" stand only support a 42" TV? And if it can support 130 lbs for a CRT, why not a Plasma? I have a Panny 58" on the way. What do you guys think? It is made out of solid wood. There was some discussion earlier about the Costco Shemore stand from Slam brands. I was wondering if some one could give me the dimensions of the center cabinet. I've been to the Slam Brands and Costco web site, and can't find it anywhere. I'd like to stick my center channel in there. It is a Polk Audio Monitor 5 series, about 22" x 10" x 10". (it's an old vintage speaker, but sounds just great with my Polk Audio 10B's for the left and right channel, also vintage).
Thanks in Advance.

Well, after waiting MONTHS to get a stand for my 5010 I finally got one today - but I think I might have screwed up. Costco now has the Royce which is almost identical to the Shemore, except it has a mounting option so it costs $500 (so I think $120 more). I had been wanting that option along with an enclosed (and somewhat ventilated) cabinet so I immediately went for it. But now that I have it in my pad I didn't realize how tall it was. I believe the Shemore is 24 inches tall but this one is 28. That really leaves no need for the mounting bracket as it would place the TV very high. So I think I basically paid an extra $120 for nothing because I don't think I'm going to use the mount at all. Sending it back would be a huge hassle especially since I paid extra to have it delivered and the box is ripped up. Ugh.

It was delivery yesterday:cool:. The shelves are glass and it comes with wood insert doors but gives you glass if you want to change. I put the glass on the middle section. Finally a place for my old albums. Now:rolleyes:, I just gotta get a receiver and speakers:(.

Sorry bud, but it wont fit either vertically or horizontally in the center shelf. I think the vertical clearance is just a shade under 20". I have a mission center channel and it is just over 20" long so I had to place it on top of the stand. I actually dont mind it up there cuz it hides the wires for my LCD which I hung just above the center channel - it saved me from having to wire through the walls to keep the mess of the wires hidden. If I have time I can try to measure the shelf dimensions for you and post them...

Since it's open on the sides, how clean does it all look, assuming proper cable management? I'd have a DVR, PS3, Wii, A/V receiver, and Harmony One dock. So there's all those audio/video cables, plus all the power cables. And all of these power cords will be going into a UPS.

If I place a few discreet Chotchkies on the sides, will it all look pretty clean?

This has to pass the wife test.....

I've got a Denon 3801 Receiver and it just fits on the shelf with minimal clearance on the sides and not much on the top. That is why I especially like the vented shelving for heat dissipation. Unfortunately I just bought banana plugs for my receiver (hated disconnecting and reconnecting my speakers by threading the wires through the eyelets) and with them in I can't really put on the magnetic cover plate on the back cuz the cables pop the cover off when the sliding shelf is moved all the way back. I just had to keep the rear cover off. Even with these minor gripes I still bought the stand cause I justb couldnt justify buying a BDI (even though I would love one of those) that costs way more than my TV. For all the features that the Shemore has and it's half decent build quality I think it could cost way more. I'll try to post some pics in the near future....

I'll be setting up this stand in about two weeks and I sort of have it planned out, so I'll take picture when I'm done, but here's sort of a text description of my idea. Remember that wires can be routed in the rear spine of that stand.

I'm lucky that pretty much everything I need to actually have on the stand lacks any kind of external power brick - Denon AVR-789, PS3, and maybe even the Verizon FIOS box, not sure yet if that has a brick, haven't seen it. Not sure I'm going to have an actually UPS, probably just a decent Panamax non-UPS outlet thingy. :)

I also have a separate charging station for my PS3 controllers and headset which I'm actually going to locate with the Harmony One station on a table next to the sofa and not on the TV stand, further cleaning up the stand.

I'll probably take the time to either find black speaker wire, or paint it, to make it a bit more discrete. I'd like to find two narrow and relatively short bookcases to set to either side to double as disc storage and speaker stands for the front Energy C-50s I have. Otherwise, I may see if I have enough clearance after the TV is mounted to just sit them on the top shelf - though that obviously won't get me the best separation.

I'm also thinking of possibly rigging some kind of black felt curtain on the back of the stand (hanging from the top shelf) so that any loose cables don't stick out as much against the lighter back wall and sort of just blend in against the "curtain."

I'd like to see the pics. I'm going to pick up the Shemore this weekend at Costco (if I can get some help, the thing weighs 200#, and I live on the third floor). According to my wife, cable management is the most important issue. I have cables all over the place now. I need to get them hidden, or die. I don't really want to pay anyone to hide them in the wall. I could do the work myself, except for moving an electrical outlet, I'd need an electrician for that.

My quest for an open stand is somewhat covered over in another thread:

if anyone's interested. Because of the height/width of the speaker, and the weight of the receiver, and the fact I'd like two shelves, it's proving somewhat difficult.

Gotcha, well BDI does make some open stands too. Sometimes the closed cabinets are not great for some of the higher heat components, even with the ventilation.

I had to take my stand up my narrow flight of stairs that curve twice. I only weigh about a buck fifty and me and my cousin were ok to move it up. We had to stand it vertically on its sides to get it up though. I highly recommend taking it out of the box first before moving it up if you can. There is a fairly heavy piece of MDF on the bottom of the box for support and you can also remove the rear wooden covers and the glass and extra hardware to make it a lot lighter for lifting.
As for cable management I am planning to buy some cable covers that kinda look like baseboards and run them all along the edge of the wall to hide the cables for my surrounds - but that is another project for a later time... Will try my best to post pics soon.

I like the fact that you can change the front panels to glass, wood or mesh. I used the glass for the cabinet doors but the only problem with that is that when you close the doors they make a horrible slamming sound as if the glass is on the brink of shattering even with the securing clamps tightly screwed. I helped solve this by placing the white foam that came in the packaging and placed it between the glass and the wood to prevent any vibrations and any cringing every time I have to close the doors. The pads that came on the doors were also pretty useless so I used thicker foam pads and now the loud slam is a much softer thud. Anyways, those are my biggest complaints I could come up with for this stand. The styling IMO is not too bad although I would prefer something a little more contemporary with simpler lines like one of the BDI ones that I was drooling over. Regardless my minor complaints I would still recommend this stand to anyone who doesn't sneeze money and is looking for a decently built stand with a lot of higher end features for its very reasonable price...

You're probably going to laugh at me, but I'm rocking this cheap $40 tv stand in the bedroom with a 50" plasma. The stand is rated for 85 pounds and the tv is about the same. I've had it for 7 months and it's just fine, but for whatever reason I just don't know if I can trust it with a $1000+ tv. Someone wrote on the review which makes me feel slightly better..

This stand is reasonably sturdy. I can walk on it without it bowing 170lbs and it currently supports a 61" DLP without any problems. I'm not sure about the reviews stating that it broke. The weak spot on this stand is top shelf front (not the legs) the legs are made of PVC but the cylindrical design allows them to hold a tremendous amount of top weight (not side weight mind you) If your TV weighs more than 150lbs I would worry about the laminated particle board breaking.

What would you do if you were me? Stop worrying or bite the bullet and spend $150+ on a new stand?

This one is on sale until Friday and is rated for 200 pounds

Nice pictures. I'm thinking I'll set mine up the same way. Put the TV on the wall, and use the center channel to hide the wires to it.
I think that stand will look real nice if I put some ambient lighting behind it and the TV.

I had the same problem, but wasn't willing to spend $1,500 for standout designs. I ended up purchasing that stand, and its OK. The glass is not clear, so you cannot see displays on your components behind it if necessary, the back is solid except for two small holes for cables (so I brought out a saw and opened it up so that I wouldn't have overheating components), and the doors can be a pain to align properly when assembling. I just put my center speaker on top since it would not fit in the opening.

Hope this is not a repost but Wal-mart has the Z-Line TV stand with mount for 189.00 + Tax. It is in the local SoCal ad. They don't have them on display, at least not at the two Walmarts I went to. They seem to be keeping them in the back, if you can get an employee not on break or lunch to help you. Box will say HomeTrends, but instructions clearly say Z-Line Designs.

Model # WM563-44M
UPC # 631680563440 (Asked them to search this UPC with no luck)
Try 063168056344 (on my receipt)

I'm a lousy shot and I don't have 3 post yet. Quick shot of the box.
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/4552/zlinedj7.jpg

Looks pretty much identical to the Z-Line Victoria except it doesn't have black glass. I wanted to post the shot I took of my TV mounted, except there's crazy amount of boxes and wires in the living room atm.

Each shelf holds a max of 65 lbs according to the sticker. If the TV tilts forward, it comes with rubber spacers that push it forward slightly (didn't need them so can't comment).
Comes with M4, M5, M6, and M8 screws @ 15mm, 35mm, 54mm, and spacers. Forgot to add that it fit my Samsung 46" 5 Series LCD just fine, as someone in another thread mentioned a mounting problem with the Stealth from Target.
Overall all I am happy with the purchase and the quality seems a lot better than the Stealth TV Stand from Target. I think it was a good stand for under 2 bills. If anyone wants more pictures of the stand just pm me. I need to clear up the living room now.

Also can anyone recommend me some decent priced rear speaker stands for my Energy C-100s. I just got a pair of Sanus Natural 30s for the fronts, and needed two slightly taller ones for the rears (higher than ear level for directs?). It is for a 5.1 system where wall mounting isn't an option for me atm.

The dimensions of the stand are roughly 58"w x 20"D x 24"H. As far as I know, you can only get this at a Costco store. They don't sell it online and they don't ship from the store. I haven't seen this sold at another store or online anywhere so unfortunately you might be out of luck. :(

On the box it says it will hold a 60" TV and the top shelf holds about 200 Lbs. So unless you TV weighs more than that you should be ok. I don't weigh 200 Lbs but I've stood on my stand and it feels really solid.

if I anchor it to a back wall, doesnt that defeat the purpose of mounting it on the pole stand... so i dont have to put things in the wall. and anchoring it into the wall isnt going to prevent it from leaning forward.

I guess I am assuming it will lean forward from the weight of the tv but that must not be the case.

How about this one? The center is 23.75" wide. It's available in three colors - ebony, expresso, and oak. Glass doors are an option for the left and right. I don't think there are any drawer options though.

The TV height is a little high but fits my sofa set (with recliners) very well while seated. I may updgrade the speakers later on but the Onkyo S7100 HTIB speakers sounds good enough for me right now (mostly movies/games).

Yes the Z-line was my first choice but was too much for my budget. The Whalen stand looks pretty well built and not to mention looks like the z-lines stand mounts. Also the price was a little friendlier on my wallet.

Wow! nice set-up you have there. how are those Polks treating you so far? I may hook up with you when i finally decide to upgrade my speakers and it's nice to know we have the same audio receiver. I'm new to all of this Home theater stuff so i just started with an Onkyo HTIB with room to grow later on.

Good deal you have there on your Z-line, when i was shopping for those the prices were around $299 and up ofcourse depends on the style but pretty much the same stand and mount configuration. I did see something like that at Walmart last night for $199 also but not too sure if it's the Z-line or different brand. Those lighting effects are cool too! nice work

I'm going to pick up that Whalen "Skyline Tuscany" stand/mount from Costco this evening. The price is great and it really looks like a more expensive stand.

The Tustin and Irvine Costco's both had about half a dozen in stock last night, but I couldn't fit in in my Mazdaspeed3, so I'm going to loop back tonight with a friends truck.

Rex, your photo looks great, we have the same color scheme in our front room and I think it all goes very well together. I'm going to have to focus a bit more on cable management than I have in the past, due to how open the back of this stand is, but it looks doable.

I think my only concern is the stand leaning forward with my 67lb Kuro on it. The box did say it had adjustable feet, but doesn't that just mean all the "flat" shelves end up leaning backwards to compensate for the mount arm leaning forward?

We'll see how it turns out. That's whats great about Costco, its a no worry trial.

thanks, they are nice, i got em last year. i got great deals on everything i bought, so it's sounds great for the $$$ i spent. i would like to have higher end polks, but for the size of my room (and budget), these are all i needed.

when i go to someones house where they are only using their tv speakers it sounds horrible.

7.1 surround sound is awesome...well the receiver simulates 7.1 on most things since their only 5.1, but some blu-rays (like transformers in 7.1) sound amazing.

the first thing i would upgrade would probably be the sub, but that wont be for another year or so.

That's great! I would love to upgrade mine later and get one of those nice floor standing speakers and surrounds/sub.

The PS3 i do play but not much, maybe an hour game 2-3 times a week. Only have a basketball game which i play with my co-workers online. And maybe 2-3 bluray movies a week which i rent from blockbuster.

getting off topic here...but nice set-up and those stand-mounts are nice...i may be wall mounting my TV later on and keep the stand to house my components.

I really like this stand. Is the pole adjustable, though? I've only ever seen sets attached to it in a high position. If it is not adjustable, would the pole still be visible if a set such as yours were to be placed on the top shelf instead?

So far it seems that all of the stands that are similar to this that have pole-mounts do not offer up and down adjustments.

So far it seems that all of the stands that are similar to this that have pole-mounts do not offer up and down adjustments.

The stand is not adjustable but came with 2 poles and you just use which ever fits your needs. The long one for TV mounting for that wall mount floating effect and the short one (up to the stand height only) if you want to rest your TV on the top shelf or wall mount.

Thanks for the info. I think the Samsung LN55A950 will work nicely with the stand.

So is this one of those Costco exclusive products? My searches online came up dry.

I think they are. I didn't even see them on the website. Went to Coscto one time, saw the stand and got it. I was looking more on Z-lines back then but this was pretty close to it.

Well, I was able to browse through a local Costco and take a closer look at the Bayside stand. I actually think the one from Sam's Club would be better for my space, however. The only problem is, the item is not in stock at any of the Sam's Clubs within a 100 mile radius of my location. I hope they get them back in stock soon.

TV bottom to floor height is 33" for LN52A550 Samsung. TV height for me is fine but may be too high for other's taste.

Well this is depressing. The Technology 3-in-1 Console is another exclusive product (sold by Sam's this time) and they're not available and there's no response from them as to if/when they'll return.

I have the Whalen stand from Coscto. Upon initial installation i found that the TV and stand are leaning a bit forward. My stand is on carpet and i just placed spacers under the front legs to make it level. I believe it has thread with spacers under its legs to make it level but just went ahead and used some spacers. The anchor on the back connected to pole i believe was just additional precaution for the stand not to tip over. I haven't connected that piece since i moved and the stand looks fine.

There are lots of them at my local Costco. Have them look in the computer at your Costco they might be able to tell you if they are arriving anytime soon.

bsawhney
02-16-09, 04:41 PM
I could fit it into the back of the Honda Odyssey with the third seat folded down. May not fit into a car I think.
88 pounds is not a problem, it can hold upto 165 pounds.

I set this up for myself and a friend of mine a few weeks back and noticed that the wooden part that touches the floor was raised from the back and not resting on the floor entirely. In one case it was half an inch raised and we had to use some cardboard pieces to stabilize it at the back. The levels are only on the front side and did not help with correcting this problem.

I've given up on finding something that fits my 26" wide center, 400 DVD and 300 CD changers. So a friend and I just finished building this BDI 'clone' to fit my needs - total cost of materials ~$350.

I'm happy with the way it turned out considering this was the first piece of furniture I've ever built from scratch.

Dimensions: 69"W x 23" D x 22.5" H

Design features include:
- Removable center channel door with speaker cloth
- A large full extension drawer to hold Blu-Rays, HDDVDs, games, etc.
- Tinted plexi windows on doors
- Removable vent slotted back panels held in place by magnets
- 2 ultra quiet 120mm fans to turn on when receiver / DVR are on to force hot air out
- Ample space in the back for surge protectors and cable management (everything is concealed in cabinet).

Here's the fruit of my labor:

I used 3/4" cabinet birch ply and was going to do dado & biscuits but it was really tough ripping the long panels using a contractor table saw - even with a home made panel cutter in a tight, small garage. So, I kept it simple & easy and decided used pocket holes instead. The Kreg pocket hole jig is an amazing little tool. The cabinet is rock solid. The wood putty'ed pocket holes, however, made staining it as is out of the question. It was also way too cold, dusty and we had lack of ventilation. So I decided to cover it in black ash vinyl veneer to match my speakers instead. I did consider using real wood veneer but it would have increased the price exponentially and staining it in the cold, dusty garage still posed a challenge. The material installed looks much better than I had anticipated but it was really labor intensive & time consuming. It would have been much easier to stain/poly it for sure. My next project will start in warmer seasons.

Thanks for recommending the Savante Shemore, ant927. I actually bought the last boxed one at the Costco near me. This unit has exceptional quality for the price ($375). I can't believe the features it has for this price point:

- metal mesh vented sliding shelves and bottom
- removable magnetic finished wood backs with cable slots for access to equipment
- glass/wood/mesh door options
- integrated power strip in middle cabnet
- Completely assembled

I was really close to purchasing a unit that wasn't as nice and was over $700 plus delivery charges and 6 week lead-time. You saved me $300+ bucks!

For those who are interested, here is some more information on this product:

Manufacturer: Slam Brands
Model: Savante Sehmore
Costco Item#: 173582
Price: $375.00
Gross Weight: ~198lb.

I just picked this up in the northern virginia area. I am very impressed with the quality for such an inexpensive piece.

I also plan to make my own but that will take some time. This will tide me over until that actually materializes.

I wanted to add that the Shemore unit from Costco that I just purchased had another one just like it on the shelf at the Fredericksburg VA Costco that I visited today. So If anyone in the Northern Virginia area needs one there is an extra one on the shelf.

Ugh.

Do you have any photos of the stand?

i bought the costco whalen stand, it looks nice but i had a question. did any of you have an issue with the veza plate(i think thats what its called) not able to swing freely? is it supposed to? i called tech support and was told to "put 2 feet on the stand and use another hand to force it free) needless to say this did not work. they have me the option of taking it back to costco which would be a pain in the ass, or wait 10-12 weeks for a replacement. needless to say neither was an option. me and my dad used a hammer and were able to straighten it out, so that we could attach the unit to the spine. but the plate is supposed to be freely right? i just wanted to confirm. i did notice there was a screw on the plate, but i didnt think that had anything to do with it.

Without the TV mounted to it, it is very hard to move it by hand, but like the support guy said you need to hold down the stand and push hard against it.

Once the TV is mounted it becomes easier to swivel with the extra leverage of the panel itself.

Vitoria TV stand (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0013J0GG0/)

Thanks for helping... Any Information would be helpfull
That is a Z-line Vitoria stand with integrated mount. The vertical distance between the tempered glassed shelves is about 10 inches.

Fry's Electronics (B&M) has a few Z-lines models on display. The Vitoria glass sits atop a metal frame. The Madrid glass is held only by 3 simple and fragile looking clips. The top shelf of the Madrid is wood. Both mounts swivel. The Vitoria glass is thicker than the Madrid glass. Walmart has a few Z-line in store and if the Vitoria is not instock can be ordered online to be sent to your local B&M within a few day for pickup and @ 2 bills - Best price I've seen. One of my three local WMs has it instore which I'm planning on picking up today.

I was wondering if someone could make any additional recommendations on top of the research I've done. Here are some general requirements I have for the TV stand in order of importance:

1) Supports TV between 48" and 56" wide (basically a 50" LCD/plasma)
2) Room for the following components: Wii, power conditioner (4" tall), DVD player (3" tall), and receiver (7.625" or 7 5/8" tall). I would like at a minimum for a bottom shelf that is 9" tall so there is breathing room for the receiver. The receiver is also hefty at about 51 pounds, so I'd like a good weight rating on the shelf too.
3) Open architecture so adequate airflow can be ensured
4) Not as important, but if possible I prefer to avoid glass shelving.

Currently I'm looking at the Sanus AFV-48 stand (http://www.sanus.com/us/en/products/av-foundations/av-accurate/AFV48). TVs that may go on this stand include the Sony 52XBR6 (49.5" wide), Pioneer PDP-5020 (48.5" wide), maybe even another TV that is 56" wide due to side speaker mounting.

What is your opinion on TVs that might be a little wide for the stand? With the Sony and Pio, there would be 0.5" and 0.25" on each side, so I don't think that's too bad. However, if I get the opportunity to get the TV that is 56" wide, is it considered tacky to have the TV extend past the sides of the stand? Opinions welcome.

Any other suggestions for a stand I may have missed? Appreciate any input, thanks!

Have you looked into the Standout Designs Horizon n702? They are in the process of designing back panel extensions to increase the depth from 18.75 ".

I just got my Standout Design N702 last Friday. The fit and finish on this piece is incredible. All wood design, no particle board. My Yamaha receiver fits though I could use an extra inch in the back for my Blue Jean Cables(waiting for the extensions). Tons of room for several components. I'm totally satisfied with this purchase.

P.S. Pilk, thanks for the advise.

I just took delivery of the Standout Designs Horizon n702 in Espresso finish. The build quality, finish and customer service is outstanding.

Oh....and if you are concerned about the 18 3/4 depth not being enough...well there is a possibiliy that an extender my be an option in the not too distant future. You heard it first here ;)

I just received the N702 in Cinnamon, so thought I'd share a photo and my thoughts about it. The photo makes it appear a bit more "reddish" than it actually looks in person. (We're doing some remodeling/painting, hence the plaster on the walls):

On top is a Panny 50PZ850U and Mirage Nanosat speakers.

I was *this* close to buying one of the Amish-made plasma TV stands in solid oak when I found out about Standout Designs here on AVS. Yes, it cost more than the Amish models, and frankly it's not quite up to the Amish level of craftsmanship in terms of the way the wood is joined (Amish would never use screws to fasten on the top, for instance). It is solid wood though (the cinnamon finish employs maple, but the espresso and black finishes employ ash).

What it came down to for us is that the N702 is roomier than some of the Amish pieces, especially in terms of depth, which gives us a few more inches of room at the back for cables and wires (especially important for our receiver). The N702 also comes with an easily removable back, with large gaps at the top where you can install optional exhaust fans, plus vented glass shelves, and drawers with inserts that are custom-sized for storing DVDs and CDs. If the Amish made such a piece, I would have jumped on it.

I went all out and upgraded to the extra drawer (in lieu of leaving the top shelf open for the center speaker), plus I added vented glass shelves and the exhaust fans. It's a solid piece of furniture, that's for sure. Easily weighs 200lbs. without my gear.

I should also mention that a local retailer carries the BDI product line, which my wife and I went to see. I was especially interested in the Novia 8429 after seeing it online, but I was not at all impressed in person. It's clearly not solid wood, and the veneers they use felt very cheap and "plasticky" to me. For essentially the same price (around $1,800), I got a nearly equivalent piece of furniture (in terms of size, styling, and design), except mine is made of solid wood and has all the extra bells and whistles.

My wife and I are just beginning to appreciate what quality furniture is now that we're in our 40s, and although it may be more expensive we don't mind paying for quality if it will essentially hold up forever with proper care. I fully expect that this will be the last TV stand I ever buy (well, unless we move into a bigger house someday and I need to set up a 2nd home theater ;))

I don't think you need to worry about having the same *anything* for 40 years, nothing lasts that long anymore. I just replace my Zenith TV that I bought in 1984. It worked great up till a few months ago. A storm knocked out a power supply about 1985 and that's the only problem I ever had with it till the CRT started to go. It's now in semi-retirement in the bedroom. I can probably nurse a couple more years out of it.

Just do an Ixquick.com search for "Amish furniture" or "Amish TV stand" or "Amish plasma stand". There are any number of sites that carry Amish-made furniture. If your gear will fit inside and you don't need some of the extra bells and whistles (vented shelves, exhaust fans, etc.) then it's worth considering. We have a lot of Amish farms in our vicinity, so many of our local stores carry their furniture. It's very nice stuff -- "heirloom quality", as they say.

See, that's the mindset I was referring to. And when it comes to electronics, I absolutely agree with you. But quality-made, solid wood furniture should last many, many lifetimes. My wife and I are currently using her grandmother's diningroom table set, sideboard, china cabinet, vanity, and dresser. My parents are still using a diningroom table and rocking chair that were hand-made by my mother's grandfather. And all of it is in amazing shape.

They just don't make 'em like they used to. :(

[QUOTE=DilutedReform;15417696]I just picked up a new 46" Sony LCD and am looking around at stands.

I too fell in love with the Whalen Furniture XL1 when I saw it here. Then I spent WAY TOO MUCH TIME looking online for one. It seems they are made for Costco only. Bayside Furnishings is the same company. Today I made the hour plus drive to the nearest Costco to look at one. Local pickup only, no online order. They had a pile in stock and one on display. Sadly the display model was on a shelf about eye level. That made it hard to look at and evaluate. On the bright side it appears to be solidly built. The backbone is about a 4" major axis oval tube and the mount looks (from my 10 ft away vantage point) substantial. There was nothing mounted on the one I saw. In these threads I've seen coments about the display leaning inward unless adjustments (shimming ??) are made to the base. The top glass shelf (and maybe all) has a metal underframe. I'll likely not use the mount and will set the display on the top shelf. The wooden side pieces looked ok but where joined with the bottom pieces like the $200 piece of furniture it is. Not terrible but not old world craftsmanship either. Also, Costco is a membership ($50) place. I'd very likely make no further purchases there due to distance.

Z-line appears to be a little easier to do business with and has some similar styled pieces (Escalante and Vitoria) each at about $400.

I don't know what I'll pick for a stand. The decision on HDTV (Panasonic th50pz850u) and sound systems (Onkyo 6100) where both much easier and clearer decisions.

Good luck with yours
Al

The Bayside Whalen manual rates the 3 shelves @ 50 pounds max load while the website bullet point claims: "Console top can accommodate flat panel TVs: 32-50" and maximum weight of 240lbs."
Please see my post 2965 regarding the Z-line Vitoria which might be found at your local Walmart at half the cost you mentioned. One advantage the Whalen has over the Vitoria is that all three glass shelves are supported by a metal frame, the Vitoria only the bottom two. So if the top shelf would be easier to replace on the Whalen.

The blurb on the Whalen box said 135 lbs on the top shelf. The metal frame underneath the 8mm (I think) glass top has a span of about 16 inches at the center.

Good furniture ain't cheap. But as with most other things in life, you can often pay a lot for something that's worth a little, but you can rarely pay a little for something that's worth a lot. Quality will always cost you, but you'll never regret paying for it.

I am looking for a low credenza to sit (preferrably piano black) a 60 to 65 inch flat screen on. I also need just one shelf that is at least 14 inches tall and 20 inches deep to hold my center channel that weighs 96 pounds. Anyone know of such a unit?

I just picked this TV stand up from Costco for $375. I've always liked the BDI Avion series and this is similar. It's the Savante Shemore. Build quality is surprisingly good and there are lots of great features like 4 slide-out shelves, removable back doors, and interchangeable door panels (solid wood, glass, and mesh). HD equipment is coming in a few weeks.

Stand is Bello AVS-2762 I needed a stand with clearance for a 7 inch high cc and a 7 inch high avr but still enough clearance for air flow. Top shelf is actually 10 in high.

If I were you, I'd put the center channel speaker on the top shelf and the gear on the bottom. Keeping your CC as close to the same axis as your R and L and display makes a BIG difference.

So i went home and found it online for 332.00 delivered on the theNerds.com site. Has anyone done business or know about this site? The price is very good so am being careful.
