For those of you on a tight budget like me, this is a great looking stand (looks better in person) for very cheap from Ikea.

I just found a GREAT option for a stand. Rooms to GO (In the south but I beleive you can order online) has a tv base from thier Diamond collection. Two color options including espresso come in 48 inch and 63 inch lengths, 20 inch tall and 20 inches wide. Has openings for cable management in the back as well. Looks very nice and has silver door handles. 48 inch provide a door on one side and rack on the other. 63 inch has rack in the middles and doors on left and right. Very very nice piece and here is the kicker. $349 for 48 inch and $399 for the 63 inch. I ordered one today and it will be here tomorrow and I will post pics as I cannot find it on thier site.

Cheers

well this is a nice little piece for fairly cheap money that I found on Friday and arrived yesterday. Actual cost was $399 for the 63 inch version and the 48 inch is $349. Very well made with nice solid hinges. Just not sure if I want to put casters on it. A little feet would have been a nice final touch.

How wide is the rack area in the middle? I have yet to find a piece of furniture I like (reasonably priced) that can accomodate my C-C3 center channel. And is the color espresso or black?

I agree, furniture that can accomodate a below-the-TV large center channel is hard to find. The closest I found was the Salamander consoles w/ a riser to accomodate (without choking) a center channel. I wouldn't consider them 'reasonably priced' though.

I plan on purchasing a 42" Panasonic.

I've had my eye on these two stands from Eurway. Anyone using either?

There are several other stands in the "storage section", then go to "tv and audio stands" section. Several stands are under $500. Go to Eurway (you know the rest, not allowed to post the url just yet.)

I've purchased several pieces of furniture from Eurway in the past and my experience has been great.

Does that have any ventilation holes in back (I can't tell from the pics)?

Hi,

I finally got around to taking a photo of my new stand.

Just to give an idea what this unit looks like. I got the stand in black color, which is a good match for black components and my ctr channel.

Overall, I'm really happy with the stand. Great construction, extremely sturdy, thick steel tubing, 10mm tempered glass etc. You can see what I like about this stand a few pages earlier...

The unit looks better moved back against the wall, but I have it out in this picture as I'm still wiring (as you can see...)

The only thing I'm not happy with is where I purchased the unit from. Just about everything went wrong with the order that could. It was about the worst on-line purchase experience of my life, but that really was just because of the vendor. I'm not sure if it's against forum rules to post the vendor. If it's not, let me know and I gladly will.

But there are lots of places to buy this unit, although it's harder to find in black. Most places only carry the silver/gray color unfortunately.

And like any decent, heavy piece of furniture, I wouldn't recommend shipping it UPS. My vendor told me they only ship this unit by freight, but it ended up shipping UPS anyway. :(

If anyone wants more info, you can PM me about it.

HM.

heya Bruzzi,

Nice idea about adding the silver knobs to the Ikea stand .. sounds like it looks good. Ikea will be opening a store 10 minutes from my house next week :)

I am going to get this in black ,but was wondering:

1. does the frosted glass hamper any IR signals?

2. I have my plasma mounted, does the stand look to "big" below a wallmounted plasma?

3. is it pure black, or black brown by the description. kinda hard to tell fro the pic.

Thanks .. Joe

Hi BruZZi,

It's Davidt1. Can you help, again? I have abandoned the DIY salamander type furniture for something smaller and even simpler because space is limited in my bedroom. I went to Fry's today and saw a rack I want badly. It's a simple, open, metal and glass design with adjustable shelves. Unfortunately, it's not for sale because it's one of those racks provided by manufacturers to display their products. In this case, it's a Monster Cable rack that's used to display their power conditioners. This thing is just perfect for me, very sturdy and with a flat top so I can put a flat tv on. I even went to the GG store-closing sale to see if they have it. No luck. But they do have a 40% off on all the furnitures. I hoping someone can point me to the right place to buy one. Thank you.

I have a general question about plasma furniture. I'm about to buy the Maxent 42" plasma from Costco, which is about 49" wide. However, a lot of the stands that I've been looking at in my price range are a few inches shorter than that. Will it look weird if a couple inches of the TV are hanging over the edge of the stand on each side? Does anyone have a picture of a setup like this?

You can look at the pics on the linked page in my sig. This is a 50" screen that overhangs about 1-2 inches on each side.

As a designer and manufacturer, I agree that in most cases undersized furniture is a compromise in aesthetics [depending upon the style], column type stands would be the exception.

nrdempress,

You mean like this?

Plasma is 47.5" wide and the stand is 45". Would it look better on a three door unit (more credenza-like) instead of the two door (more stand-like)? Probably...just didn't have the space. The overhang here is minimal. But if you mean the kind of unit with a back panel for plasma mounting...I would agree that the panel should be wider than the set.

BruZZi,

Thanks. Some more info, the rack I looked at had a metal top and wheels. Btw, I am in the Los Angeles area.

nrdempress,

That's the type of furniture I am looking for (ok, mine is not gonna be real furniture--just a component rack that I can put a flat tv on top.) I think Miniacs' set up might be what you're talking about:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=489915&page=15&pp=30

Hopefully, mine will look different though. Also, why can't I look at the picture files here?

Thanks for posting all of your pictures. It gives me a good idea of what my plasma will look like with overhang, and it doesn't look too bad at all. I am convinced! Bruzzi, I am also wondering about the same questions as Joe had about the Ikea unit. That's what I'm looking to get.

I decided to jump on a stand from BB .. after looking at about 100 different ideas I decided on something that wasn't a credenza, was open with glass shelves but had a wood frame. My dilema was that my plasma is mounted and I didn't want something that overpowered the room.
I checked out the Cielo by BDI but it was way outta my price range.

Got the Studio RTA Home Tech 3000 for $259. Really nice quality build, solid wood and heavy glass. I was kinda surprised because some of the BDI stuff in Magnolia didn't even look as good as this. I figured I saved about $400 and the wife thinks it's great.

They basically quote 8-10 weeks on all of their stuff. We got our bedroom furniture from them. I couldnt wait for the credenza. By the way, they say they are popular items but they are on time with delivery. I ended up waiting 12 weeks for the bedroom furniture.

If so, I'd love to see those pictures and your review. I wonder how much space is between the bottom of the tv and the top of the shelf. I'm trying to fit a 7.5" tall center speaker below our tv and am havin a tough time finding any sort of unit that has a space that large built in it.

I'm also curious how wide the side portions are that store the A/V components. If you could report that it'd be fantastic.

This unit might be a good alternative.

I look forward to your review. :)

Yep, That is the one i ordered. For the time being we are going to set the 50PX50U on the base with the stand included with the TV and i will most likely set the center channel on top of the tall piece for now. I measured the side A/V openings at Best Buy and they are approx 19 inches wide, my reciever is 17 inches wide and should fit nicely.

I bought the Ethan Allen New Impressions plasma console about 5 weeks ago and it is in already, just have to arrange for delivery. They quoted Dec 15th but it's a month early.

The doors come with both glass and wood panel inserts. I plan to remove the top drawer (15.5" wide opening) and place my 15" Athena C.5 center channel speaker there with a custom made speaker-cloth covered wood frame to fit snugly in the opening to hide it.

Snoop01,

Is this a home delivery? I ask because a Best Buy employee told me that it's only delivered to the store and I have to pick it up there. I am torn between the traditional dark design and the more cheerful cherry one. I intend to remove the center drawers and put my sub there. And with the cherry design, all my components will be out of sight. Sweet! Anyway, I am looking foward to reading your review.

Has any one considered placing their plasma (or LCD) on top of one of those new portable electric fireplace/heaters?

Would the heat from these or any room heater be too much and ruin a tv?

I played with one at Costco, and it didn't generate any heat at the top at all. I think it's a great idea to put a flat tv on top of one of these. You get a two-in-one piece of furniture for the price of just one. If space in my bedroom isn't so limited, I would definitely consider it.

A two-in-one piece of furniture is a great idea with the portable fireplaces, huh?

I was also considering a side board of some style to be higher off the floor than the typical TV table and also store DVD's, extra cords, etc. Then there'd be the issue of where to put the AV equipment - reciever, TiVo, DVD, CD player, etc.

I was looking for a sideboard type of item also - although I still plan on wall mounting. Daughter wants "old world" styling, so I went with this which would probably also work with a stand-mount:

Hard to find many sideboards or credenzas with open doors for IR remote usage.

My delivery was to our house. In the Best Buy here in Austin they said that they had them in stock and i could pick it up but I opted to have them deliver to the house after talking them into dropping the delivery charge.

I bought two items, the console and the wall unit. So far all that is being utilized in the lower console after setting that up i don't know if we are going to mount the wall unit piece or take it back. I have to wait for my wife to make that call :)The console looks great, particle board with veneers but the sucker is heavy. I will post pics once I get back home this evening.

The console comes COMPLETELY assembled except for the four stands you can put on the botton for added height, which I left off. The glass that goes into the doors was wrapped nicely and taped to the shelves for shipment. One thing I realy liked about the unit is the fact that the shelves in the console are screwed to the brackets holding them in place, more sturdy setup IMHO.

There are cutouts in the back of the unit for each shelf for wire access to the components in the shelves. The shelves are wide enough that i was able to fit my Yamaha reciever, xbox, TIVO, and DVD player in with room to spare. The only issue I have run into is that components on the lower shelves that are slim in design such as DVD players will not recieve the remote signal from my Harmony 880 b/c the wood on the doors comes up and covers the IR port. I am going to have to find a book or something to elevate the dvd player. Other than this small quirk I am really happy about the purchase so far. I looked at a ton of other consoles and stands and think that for the money this product is a good choice. Sorry I don't have pics at this time, however i will post them later this evening.

I am glad you like it. Normally, an assembled furniture would be a very good thing for me, but because there is only a small hallway leading to my bedroom's standard small door, I don't think will be able to move it through the door. Maybe it comes unassembled, too?

Those of you who opt for something bigger should check out this beautiful piece at Costco:

I planned on buying the Ethan Allen plasma center, for those who bought it recently, is there any wait time?

thanks

They quoted me six to eight weeks for our bedroom furniture. Then they quoted us two more weeks after that seven more times without reason or apology.

They aren't getting any of my business again.

They quoted me six to eight weeks for our bedroom furniture. Then they quoted us two more weeks after that seven more times without reason or apology.

They aren't getting any of my business again.

I think the furniture industry in general is like this. They don't care about the final end-user (the "real" customer). They operate behind a screen of retailers and dealers who they deem to be their customers -- even though its really a fiction -- since the store is just the order taker.

I ordered home theater seating (Berkline recliners). I was told roughly 4 weeks. At the end of the 4 weeks (not before) I was informed that my leather covers weren't available. They didn't know when they would be ready.

I asked the dealer to just get me the recliners with any cover in the same color family (I wasn't wedded to the exact covers). The factory told him if they did that it is deemed a "new" order and would take even longer.

That didn't make logical sense to me, so I used my Internet savvy and got the email addresses of the executives of Berkline (a private company). Boy were they unhappy to have to deal with me (the end-customer, not their dealer network).

But it didnt' change anything. They couldn't tell me what covers were available, so that I change my order to something that wouldnt' be delayed. They wouldn't push my order up or do much of anything.

I'm now told that it should ship next week. Which means, IF it does, I will receive them almost exactly 8 weeks after my order.

Why they can't let you order stuff they know is in stock (as far as covers) is beyond me -- and makes no sense.

They simply hide behind their "dealers". To me, the dealers are like the waiters in a restaurant -- they take your order. I'm still really the customer.

Holy crap, I have ordered a huge turd in a box. This thing came in today, the finish is not anything like in the picture, and is blotchy as hell. Looks like its 15 years old b4 I even put it together (but i wont). The large piece the TV sits on is so warped it looks like a skateboard ramp :o I will get a refund ...

Is there such a thing as a stand styled like this one (credenza-like) that has twin doors, at least 50" in length, oak or black in color, and of good QUALITY under say ... $600 or less? I cant see spending 3k on a tv just to have it sit on something that looks like it came out of goodwill. I have recently spent a similar amount of money on a desk I had to put together and the difference in quality between the two are astounding. TIA

Not sure if this is the appropriate thread for this question, but I didn't see anything closer...

My wife and I couldn't really find a TV stand we loved and a good friend just built his own and it came out great - so i figured I'd try building one myself

It's coming along pretty well I think, and I can probably finish it (except for stain/poly) in a few hours - before I do that, I wanted to see if anyone had wired in PC case cooling fans with a thermostat or manual control -

The STB gets pretty hot, and I'm just trying to come up with a way to give it enough air. Are PC cooling fans too cheezy? are there other options?

Thanks,
Rick

I built mine. Also couldn't stand the ridiculous prices.

For those that aren't carpenters, though, I've seen a number of examples in this thread that would take a center channel below the screen.

I built the BDI Avion.
The center channel goes in the top drawer.
This can be somewhat limiting depending on your center channel size.
So plan ahead based on your own center channel needs.

My drawer will allow for up 8" tall center channel .

Not quite sure what'll go behind the doors. If you remove the doors, you could probably place a pretty large ctr channel in there. Otherwise looks decent, but hard to tell w/o seeing the quality of hardware, finish, joints, etc.

I've gone through most of this thread and a couple of comments/ questions.

1. My biggest decision is whether I should mount the plasma on the wall or not. I have to factor in the cost for an electrician to install a box behind the tv and the costs of a wall mount which could be a fourth for what I paid for the tv. The alternative is to buy furniture, place the center in a high enough spot and where it doesn't interfere with the tv speakers. I am going to have to buy furniture anyway so I'm deciding if the "look" of a wall mounted plasma is worth the price. Another factor with not wall mounting is that the main speakers of a 5.1 set-up are slightly behind the screen - I've read that the speakers and the front of the tv should be even or the speakers should be slightly in front of the tv to create an arc. Thoughts?

2. I have seen many with glass/frosted glass top shelves. Doesn't that reflect the TV image and cause distraction?

3. Many people put their center channels in the shelf below the top shelf - that probably doesn't work well because it is somewhat low because it would have to be aimed up to ear level or if you have a coffee table blocking the sound at that level. BUT, if you put the center channel on the top shelf, then it might interfere with the plasma that sits on the top shelf (unless you are mounting the plasma on the wall).

What I'm trying to say is if you decide to not mount the plasma on the wall but place it on the top shelf, doesn't that interfere with the placement of the center channel?

4. What's up with the furniture that has non-see through doors - how does the remote control work (IR cable or open the door everytime you are using it)? Seems like the Salamander line developed a solution for that with the perforated screens.

There are a few examples in this thread, but unfortunately most furniture that has spacing for a center seems to have a height limitation around 7". Sadly my center is 7.5", so we can't seem to find anything that will fit our center.

Just to be complete. Below is a partial list of sites I went to when looking for a console. Whew!

I ended up buying a cabinet locally from Haverty's Furniture.
It seems that in the AV world $600 buys you a steel frame and some glass shelves, or particle board. In the furniture world, including special orders like mine, $600 buys you a nice stylish console.

Hope this is helpful to someone.

1. I'm in same quandry as you. To mount or not to mount. Mounting definitely opens up more furniture options for the CC. Easiest would be to wall mount above a console and CC on top of console. As you, I'm weighing all the options of running the electrical cable from the TV too. One option I'm considering (partly because I may move in the near future), would be to not make a new outlet and let the wires dangle but use the CC to block view of the wires. Not elegant, but might work for me.

2. ?

3. Yes. If you decide not to wall mount, get one of those consoles w/ an attachable wall mount (like the BDI Avion) or one with a plasma "wall" to attach the plasma (but you'd need to purchase a wall mount & I'm not too sure how stable they are). That way, you wouldn't have to worry about special in-wall wiring.

4. My Pio TV and receiver have the SR+ function, which allows one to use the TVs IR sensor to control any SR+ compatible components. Haven't used it, but might be an option if I decide on an enclosed cabinet.

But, from my never-ending research, I've learned there is no one "perfect" furniture for all setups. In speaking w/ Ascend (my speakers), they said everyone will have to make some compromises in their setups, particularly w/ CC placement. IIRC, he said to consider placement in the following order: 1) above TV, 2) below TV but not inside console, 3) below TV inside console. For option 3, they said to minimize the effects on the speaker's acoustics (my CC is rear-ported) if placed inside furniture, remove the back panel and not have the space too tight. Hope this helps. Has any1 here purchased this one? I wonder if it comes with glass doors. This looks promising, however I would like to see more pictures.
Actually I had the same questions as you an called the manufacturer (Whalen Furniture). After I gave them the item number (950401) they confirmed that it comes with speaker grills, glass panels, or wood panels for the middle two doors.

Wish they had pictures of the piece with the doors open. We hav a costco near by that I may stop by on wednesday, hopefully they will have the piece in stock to view. If they do, I will take pics.

J_Enrikez: Looks good. Where did you get it?

i got all 3 pieces from B.B ...at a heavy discount. The Sanus natural furniture set wont be carried by B. B. anymore. I spoke to the manager and aked about any pieces he might have left. A B. B. rule is if a piece has not sold and just sits there for like 6 months they just get rid of it at a heavy discount.
got all 3 peices that range from about $350 to $500 each. I wouldnt have paid that much for the sanus peices. I mean they are nice but not like the very best top quality furniture you know. Sturdy and all, just over priced. if you go to some of the stores you could easily end up finding a great deal. especially on floor items. The only one that was a floor item of all three peices was the Tv stand piece. Killer cheap!!! i just need the end table now. no more left in texas though.

Sounds good.

I was the one who originally posted this unit in the rear projection furniture thread. I'm going to try and make it to Costco tonight, and will take pictures if it's available. My local Costco is relatively small (by Costco standards), and they may not carry this item.

Here's a link to companion storage unit. It may give us an idea of what the glass looks like.Media Unit (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11094414&whse=BC&topnav=&browse=)

How did you find out the maker is Whalen?

Sam's has a very similar piece (and name) which they list the manufacturer. The Sam's club piece (http://www.samsclub.com/eclub/main_shopping.jsp?coe=0&oidPath=0%3a-23542%3a-43701%3a-43704%3a-44264%3a-44961%3a932735&mt=a&n=0&BV_SessionID=_SC_0835038252.1132605952_CS_&BV_EngineID=ccccaddgfhkhighcfkfcfkjdgoodfkg.0) is even cheaper (doesn't include shipping) and it comes with a plasma floater although you can't change out any panels.

I did notice the media unit and thought it was a nice companion piece for those that have a spot for it.

I am considering the Lifestyles collection from "RiversideFurniture" (I can't post url's yet but they have a web site which is exactly what you think it would be given my quotes above).

On their web site go to catalog then collections then lifestyles.

I am considering the setup on the 3rd row, far right. (831C/821C).

I think it looks pretty sharp. If anyone else likes it please post a direct link if you like.

I just bought this from a local furniture dealer (Dane Decor in the Philly area, if anyone is familiar). Very pleased with it. Cherry, rock solid, roomy component racks with adjustable shelves, and the built-in recessed halogens provide some nice bias lighting. Pricey, but I liked it much better than what I saw at Ethan Allen. Once I actually get my plasma mounted on mine I'll post pix of my set up.

Just wanted to post an update regarding the two pieces below.

Whalen Urban Loft 60" Entertainment Console (http://graphics.samsclub.com/images/products/0076405342828_L4.jpg) at Sam's - Got to see this piece today real quick. Was very nice for something that cost less than $400. Didn't get to inspect it thoroughly but seemed as though they could easily charge double instead of what they are charging. Behind the two middle doors was a vertical wood divider and an adjustable shelf on each side that seemed to be at least 20" wide.

Whalen Java Urban Loft 60" Console (http://www.costco.com/Browse/PopupViewer.aspx?prodid=11094467&whse=BC&cat=28194) at Costco - The Costco here did not have this on display, as a matter of fact they had little on display in regards to media furniture (only one piece). Judging by the initial impression of teh build quality of the above piece, this piece should be quite nice also and a bargain for the price. I would bet that the interior is the same as the unit at Sam's (or just confirm by calling Whalen). I figured that since Costco includes shipping within the price that this piece is an online only item and therefore will not be at any stores unless it was a return.

Finally made it to my local Costco today, and wanted to share that my findings are the same as reverse's.

They had the Java Urban Loft Media Storage Unit (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11094414&whse=&topnav=&browse=&s=1) on display. The instore price is 40% less than the Costco.com price. I ended up buying it, and am happy with the quality, especially for the price. I'm also glad to report that the finish is truely a deep purplish java color, not the black as it appears on Costco.com

Unfortunately, they didn't have the matching console (the item I was truely looking to buy).

Once I get it set up I will take a few pictures.

HI All,

WEnt to Furn-a-kit today and picked up the perfect(IMHO) stand for my new 42" Maxent. It is by Sauder and is called Lockport. Description says will hold up to 40" TV, but when assembling, I omitted one of the pieces tat would form a small media shelf, and my 42 incher fits PERFECTLY. Has open shelf on top with ventilation for components, even can put some up on top. Also has Glass-doored 4-shelf cabinet and 4 cabinets underneath. Nice nrown wood color too. Hope this helps someone out.

I wouldn't go over 20-24" or so for a stand-mounted plasma. From about 9' away, the Salamander Triple 20 I just put together is about as high as I'd wanna go (about 21-22" which puts the bottom of the screen just below eye level). But, it all depends on your preference, furniture, etc. I have a fairly low couch and tend to slump, so lower is more comfortable for me. Others seem to be happy with 30"+ too, so just depends.

TVs should be set at a height where the sitting viewer is looking at around the middle of the screen. That being said, when you wall mount at that height, I think it looks a little weird as it is so low. If you wall mount a plasma at that height and decide to place A/V furniture underneath, the bottom of the plasma is pretty close to the top of the furniture, thus questioning my desire to mount the plasma on the wall. What do you really get with mounting in this case - the fact that it is flush to the wall instead of four inches out if placed on a stand?

Benefits of not wall mounting:

Don't have to hire electrician to install wall outlet behind plasma;
Don't have to cut holes in the wall/ snake wires through wall;
Don't have to buy a mount;
Doesn't look funny as I would be mounting it low;

Benefits of wall mounting:

Cleaner look; Flush mounted;
Can be placed higher up if kids messing with it is an issue;
More flexible height placement;
Loudspeakers are in same plane as wall mounted speakers;

Thoughts?

You cannot get a plasma 4 inches from the wall on a stand. I know -- I have the Panasonic 50px50u on the stand that it comes with on top of a credenza.

First of all, the credenza (or whatever you use) needs to be an inch or so away from the wall to leave some room for wires, cables, plugs, what have you.

Secondly, the plasma stand itself is pretty wide, not allowing the plasma to go flush against the wall.

I have everything as close as possible (plasma stand as far back on the credenza as possible), and the screen is roughly 12 inches from the wall.

Good point. But, you still haven't gained any usable square footage. The cabinet under the plasma takes up any room you'd gain by hanging the plasma on the wall. I suppose the decision comes down to what one thinks looks better; the plasma hanging 30 or so inches above the floor on the wall, or sitting on a cabinet that is 30 inches high.

Right now, a tv hanging lower than where I'd hang a picture on the wall looks too low. But, sitting on a 30 inch cabinet looks just right.

You do have other options .. with a simple $65 mount (1.25 inches from wall) and no in wall wiring or holes.
It may not work for your setup, but for me it was a breeze to install and all the wires hide behind curtains. The Glass/wood frame stand doesn't overpower the room and the height of the plasma is at the bottom 1/3 screen eye level (which is ideal for viewing). You're right about the mid screen eye level viewing. It definitely would look too low mounted above a stand/credenza:

BON3,

What brand/model of mount did you use?

Also, instead of the curtain to hide the wires, could some kind of a "wire managment fixture" be used? Would it look OK? With the TV on top, the center-channel speaker in the middle and credenza at the bottom, would the wires disappear?

Thanks.

Sanus VMPL250S .. flush mount. Buy.com has a good price.
Home Depot (or any DIY store) has some plastic molding that encases the wiring and sticks to the wall. You can then paint over it.
I kinda like the "floating" effect without a plastic case showing, but that's up to your taste. If you do it right I'm sure you'll be happy and it'll look good.

I haven't seen the Salamander's in person.

In looking at their website, I would say the walnut is more towards the brown side of the scale, and the unit I have is darker and towards the deeper brown / purplish side (officially called 'Java').

Back on page 16 I shared some pics of the Library Table Stand, that handles a large 50lb center speaker. That one was done in oak to match other furniture. Well, I had a request for one with black accents, this time in Mahogany with Black Tapered columns and floor shelf. This changes the personality of the original design. As before the flexable design allows removal of the speaker brackets without leaving exposed mounting holes, if the table needs to do future duty elsewhere in the home.

Brucer,
Have you ever made a console that can both fit a largish center channel without affecting SQ and satisfy the WAF with doors to hide equipment (but not necessarily the ctr channel)? I've already purchased a Salamander piece (I know, probably get a "boo-hiss" from you), but I think many who follow this thread are looking for something that's functional AND looks as good as your designs while minimally affecting SQ. The closest I can think of, is a Salamander Triple 10 or 20 with a riser, but I'm sure you can make one that's more purdy.

Brucer, that bed is definately mahogany, without a stain applied.

Are you gonna tell me that you built that bed as well ?

Beautiful , stunning !

….and what you may find as interesting….

It is actually a ‘Garden Bed’ I designed to go outside as a feature in an expensive Garden/Landscape job. The futon type mattress has a weather resistant cover.

About 85% of the material came out of ‘One plank’ of Honduras Mahogany…[~25”w x 4.25”thick x 16feet long]…that was one big stick. Bed = ~350lbs

Three sided railings with large radius top [for neck comfort].

I have the 4 corner posts & top side rail pieces made for a second one...and then the client [a landscape architect] disappeared on me.

Brucer,
Have you ever made a console that can both fit a largish center channel without affecting SQ and satisfy the WAF with doors to hide equipment (but not necessarily the ctr channel)? I've already purchased a Salamander piece (I know, probably get a "boo-hiss" from you), but I think many who follow this thread are looking for something that's functional AND looks as good as your designs while minimally affecting SQ. The closest I can think of, is a Salamander Triple 10 or 20 with a riser, but I'm sure you can make one that's more purdy.

That is virtually my daily challenge….constrained only by space, flavor, and budget.

I cant get that link to work. "You are seeing this page because the current domain is not configured in the current set of name servers / or the DNS account has expired. If this is an error you should contact your System Administrator immediately."

I got my new bedroom furniture today. It seems I'll need something at least 28" tall for a stand otherwise I wont be able to view the whole TV from bed. This severely limits my options as most all the stands I've seen are 19"-24"

Anyone else with the StudioTech's? I think the U-22T (triple) looks very functional and awesome in the rosewood (kind of dark cherry) & black. I really like the idea of concealing EVERYTHING inside the cabinet - center channel, equipment, 2 3-drawer ProSleeve CD units, etc... Don't know why, but I like better than the Salamander units, and I would get the casters.

http://www.studiotech.com/products/component_cabinets/ultra_u-22t/index.html

Need input on this - this triple is 67" wide, when I get it my plasma will be about 45" wide, so I'll have 11" of space left over on each side. What do y'all think of putting the L & R bookshelf-size speakers right on that left over space? Cool, or tacky and maybe too crowded? The alternative is I could leave them on their speaker stands

ClarkeBar - I don't understand what you did with the center channel, can't make out the pic? I'm thinking mine would fit right in the center section of the triple.

Thanks,
Mike

With a unit like this that has a back panel ... how is the plasma typically mounted? Does one need to buy an additional "wall mount" kit i wonder? Anyway this looks promising for the price. :)

Brucer, the bed REALLY is stunning.Did you make the turnings for the posts yourself ?
What are you using as your "finish" product.

We spray lacquer with first coats of "sealer" . Coats of lacquer vary from piece to piece depending on what type of wood we're finishing. Mahogany and Walnut tend to need more ( to look better) than oak or maple.

not sure if I can do this here, but here is my shop www.heirloomrefinishing.com

are you located on the east coast by chance ?

Stringer... not sure if you are near an Ikea or not, but if you are, check out the Markor TV unit. Its a dark-stained pine, 54" wide, 28" tall. Just picked one up last week for our 37" Sharp Aquos, and we love it.

One issue some might have with it... only the center compartment is wide enough for standard sized components. That worked out fine for us, because we wanted to put DVDs in the smaller compartments anyway. But if you've got a ton of components, look elsewhere.

Great stuff Stocky…

A lot of folks have no idea of the amount of work involved in what you do. And especially the hidden damage you often discover once it’s stripped down.

The Garden bed was finished with Spar Varnish, but I mostly use Catalyzed Lacquer, and Conversion Varnish. The Black on my Audio Protein line [I call it Diffusion Black] is a textured catalyzed polyurethane enamel…. About the toughest finish I’ve used [durability wise].

Yes, I turned and fluted the posts. Also see the previous Library Table Stand.

Ya know one day in 1972 someone in the family decided it would be fun to paint the china cabinet aqua blue. Well under the blue was solid mahogany with all sorts of marquetry and satin wood inlay. We get all sorts of surprises under the painted pieces,we strip about 10% painted and the rest had some sort of "clear" finish over a wood stain.

You should be very proud of your work, there are very few people out there who do what you do , and less than a few who do it well !

not sure why the link (http://www.furnitureshoppers.com/tv821c.html) did not work. If you go to www.furnitureshoppers.com and put 821C in the search box at the top it should come up. Maybe they have something similar to Salamander's "extended rear panel"? The butt of my receiver sticks out the back of my Triple 20 so I can't fully lock-in the rear panel. But the rear's not visible in my setup, so not a big deal to me. The extended rear panel is an option if I decide later. Not sure if Studiotech has it though.

Larry - you were right about the inside depth of the Studiotech U-22T - "usable" shelf depth actually 20.25". I still think that's pretty good. There doesn't seem to be an option for an extended rear panel or shelf.

What I'm wondering is if I can use my center channel inside the unit, behind the metal mesh screen? It doesn't obstruct remote functionality, so hopefully not speakers either?

I'll find out because I just ordered it today and will hopefully get it later next week. Will be back with review.

TheCMB,

Sorry for the delay. The Center channel is directly behind the plasma...pic is rather dark...apologies. As my plasma's internal stand is solid along the bottom (unlike say the Panny PD50U or PX50 with the raised 'Duck' feet) I have to raise the CC level a bit more but it still sounds great.

The Triple is the way to go. If I'd had the space I would have done so. Your CC should do well in there. I'm going to order the casters for my double unit as I'm always having to adjust something back there. Didn't want the casters look (some companies hide them very nicely) but it's just too impractical to keep lifting this thing out from the wall as loaded down as it is. Must have 200lbs. in equipment alone not counting the plasma. The Ultras are very well made though and nicely accessorized. Good luck with your triple.

Note: I had a problem with the cosmetics of the original doors shipped. They sent out another pair gratis and pronto. Told me to keep the originals or throw them away...they didn't need them. Great company.

Hi everybody, I'm new here. You all seem to be knowledgeable when it comes to entertainment stuff and you guys specifically seem to know a lot about woodworking and construction so I have a question. I recently purchased a black stand (made out of "engineered wood" says the manufacturer's site) from Best Buy and when it was all finished being assembled, I came home only to realize that there were no holes of any sort to put wires through the back of ythe storage area. There is a shelf and plenty of space and glass doors in front, but no place to plug anthing in through the back. I want to make some sort of holes for wires to go through (for my PS2, Cable box, and clock) but I'm not sure if it'll be safe on the wood or if it will make a difference in supporting the television. (it's a pretty heavy 27 inch CRT) So my question is: Is it safe to make a hole or two in the back of the stand to allow wires to get through? And if it is, how would I go about doing it? I have a simple drill and a drill bit set, but that's about it. Thanks.

-Dave

[nevermind, i went to home depot and got a hole saw attachment for my drill and drilled 2 holes and i'm all set]

Thanks - just talked with the company and triple should be shipped this Friday, so that s/b a fun project putting it together and loading up before X-Mas. I agree about the aesthetics of the casters, but I ordered them b/c mobility is so key. Until I finally get the exact system I want (which will be never), I'm constantly going to be pulling the triple away from the wall and messing around back there.

You can get something similar made by the same company (Laurier). This model is called the Silia and costs $900.00. I got it from Tweeter (so there was no waiting 6 weeks -- took 2 days). I think you can only order it from Tweeter stores (not direct from Laurier):

Given the limitations of my room with regards to placing rear speakers, I am very impressed with the quality of sound. It clearly provides a surround effect when used with a sub.

My room is open on one side & from what I've read, the Yamaha works best with two full side walls in the room.

Ok - I'm back... Rec'd the U-22T and assembled yesterday. It was easy to assemble, and the rosewood finish is beautiful. Center channel speaker is working fine behind the mesh screen. I also got the optional casters - they are heavy duty and IMO don't detract much from the overall look of the unit. This is a huge upgrade from the Best Buy "dorm-room" style stand I had before with everything visible and stacked all over the place. I was able to fit pretty much everything into this triple unit - including 2 Case Logic 3-drawer CD cases, HTIB, VCR, XBOX, center channel, and assorted DVD's and games.

Very happy with my purchase and would recommend to anyone.

Costco is offering this (http://www.lanefurniture.com/products/ProdInfoDet1.asp?MasterNo=15713) plasma tv stand by Lane furniture for less than half the price of the Ethan Allen piece. It is very similar in design. The interior depth of the component shelves is 22", more than enough to fit my home theater PC (using an Ahanix Divine case). I put 5 components into the unit but I think 6 should be able to fit. I have a Comcast box, DVD changer, receiver, Belkin power conditioner/protector, and the PC. I just picked one up it is very nice and I am very happy with it. The coloring is a medium to deep cherry. The picture in the above link makes the color appear a little lighter than it really is.

Well,

After the wife gave me the green light on the plasma purchase. She of course would not let any furniture in the house. After looking at dozens of websites and dozens of stores. I found this posted somewhere else on AVS forum.

http://www.ethanallen.com/templates/solutions_summer04/ent_state/state_ent.html

It's about the same price as the salamander, maybe cheaper considering it has something to mount the plasma on. We are putting the plasma on the side of the room that has a window, and so hanging it on the wall wasn't an option. We are draping the entire wall and hiding that window and using this piece. I saw it in person at the ethan allen store. It's very well built, very sturdy and actually looks like real furniture. They have a whole collection of bedroom, living room furniture as well that matches. It's $900 and the plasma back piece to mount the plasma is $300. So $1200 total which isn't bad for an ethan allen piece. Considering they have coffee tables that are close to that price.

Ok, so here's the bad part. 4 months for it to come in!!! Apparently it's so new, that each order is built from scratch and they don't stock any as they aren't 100% sure it will sell. I think this is going to become one of the best wife friendly plasma credenza's out there. No holes in the wall and it looks really nice. It should last a very long time as it's Ethan Allen.

Doors in front apparently can be glass or wood (you get both when you buy it).

So, hopefully in September I get it. Which is then when I will finally order my 50" plasma. I've narrowed it down the panasonic thanks to this forum. Mayber the 7UY will be out by then and the price is still about $5K or less.

Reading posts every day until I get to pull the trigger when the furniture gets in.

Nice find!

What width plasma will it accomodate? Those "quarter round" shelves at the side look like they considerably reduce the space for mounting plasma (or can they be left off). Web link talks about an interior dimension of 42.5", whereas with 68" exterior width, I'd hope to be able to handle a 50" plasma, about 56-60" depending on speaker arrangement. (My Costco had sealed boxes, no display unit, when I was there.)

The cost for the Lane piece of furniture at Costco is MSRP $599 and the MSRP has not been lowered by them so that is the price.

The Dimensions are: Length = 67" x Depth 24" x Height 22". The top piece has a depth of 9" and almost the same length as the bottom piece - about 65".

The furniture at Costco by me (here in Michigan) was brought in and displayed a couple days after Christmas. I think this is their normal procedure to bring in all their new furniture right after Christmas is over.

The unit will accomodate up to a 50" plasma. I currently have the Vizio in it.

I forgot to answer the other question regarding the space in the upper portion. It is has 62" of space available to accomodate a plasma from side to side. This is IF you take out the shelves (they are removable). The shelves take up approximately 5" apiece so if you leave the shelves in - you have about 51-52" of side-to-side space to work with.

The item number is 939246. They often have things in the B&M that are not on their website and vice-versa and this is one of them.

Been looking around in this thread for a couple of days - Great ideas. However I still have not found what I am looking for - I have a sanus wal mount that I am going to use to mount my 50" plasma to the wall and I was looking for a slim upright cabinet to hold my audio components (receiver, CD player, DVD player, VCR) along with my center channel speaker - And then use some sort of piping to hide the wires that go up to the the plasma TV. Can anyone recommend a cabinet like this? I have a very tight budget - the TV blew my wad!! Thanks for the help!

Yeah some, most of them are.

What you could do is just find an inexpensive stand you like and use some WireMold product attached to the wall to conceal the wires. Then you can paint it the color of the wall or some color to blend with the stand. I'd say thats the low budget way to go.

That's the exact same stand I was looking at and will probably go with. Please post your findings when it arrives as well as additional pics if you have them, especially with your A/V equipment on the shelves so I can get an idea how things will lay out. I got my sanus stand yesterday . Here 's a brief initial summary .
Fairly easy to assemble . Very strong black base .
Holds my 50 inch NEC plasma steady , which also happen to have silver black border.
Looks fantastic .
The glass shelves could have been more thick .
Overall a great contermporary look to my home theater .
I am pleased with the nice look and a very reasonable price . Would highly recommend.
Will post pics in a day or two.

Thanks for the huge list provided in November DEFman.

When looking for an entertainment centre, am I the only one with the following problems :( :

1. Height of the TV stand. I have a 50inch plasma and do not want it too high. The available manufacturer stand is 19.5 inches high but the furniture that's out there is often 24 inches high and more. That's too high when your TV is that big! (I did not get the manufacturer stand because I want the TV and audio gear all integrated in one nice entertainment centre)

2. Width/depth of the audio equipment shelves. My 200 CD player and receiver are about 18 inches wide and about 18 inches deep. It seems a lot of furniture out there cannot accommodate that.

3. Then, when you find one that fits, it is not available in black! (black is basically the only color approved by the appropriate authorities for our home theatre room  )

Any advice/link will be appreciated. Thanks.

Just to be complete. Below is a partial list of sites I went to when looking for a console. Whew!

Another poster already posted the links to this, but I will link to the pic. Really nice looking unit. I like the idea of the adjustable plasma floater, that enables you to place the screen at whatever height you like. I would place my center right under the screen and adjust the height so the bar would be hidden by the speaker.

The drawback to these units is that they are only available at Sam's Club and only on Sam's Club online, at least in my state. What that means is that I have to pay $380 for the unit, + tax + $200 for shipping. I don't mind $200 if I am ordering something that costs thousands of dollars, but this almost increases the price of the unit by 50%!

Sam's needs to figure out a way to buy stuff online and be able to pick it up at a local club. I called customer service and they say they are working on it, but I don't expect to see it any time soon. Anyway, here is the pic......

Sams Club also sells the plasma floater by itself (internet only). It is cheaper than any wall mount I have seen. It would attach to the back of your own stand and I trust it would be much cheaper to ship.

The floater they sell is not the one that comes with the unit I posted. It looks like a big wood backing. It has a console that matches it that is also available, otherwise, you would have to paint it to match your unit (which I do not have yet). I am trying to work something with my local Sam's Club to get the unit I posted, without having to pay shipping. We will see how that goes.....

Agreed on Sams CLub... I shipped the Whalen SanDeigo Mission style 60"
http://www.whalenfurniture.com/shared/product_pics/detail_SDM60EC.jpg
And I have to say, their shipping methods arent worth the money. A month transit time for $200 is just waaaay too much. Sure the item is great, condition is great, etc. But 1 month transit time for $200 shipping on a $350 item is just crazy!!!

The plasma floater kit for the Whalen consoles sold at Sam's Club are only available online. It is the same as in the one in the picture shown pre-mounted to a console earlier in this thread.

Model #898076

Features :
Telescoping arm positions TV for optimal viewing
Mount you TV without intruding on your wall
Universal mounting bracket fits most Plasma, LCD and flat panel TV's up to 60"
Tubular steel construction provides strength and cord management
Floater dimensions: 9.75" x 8 7/8" x 46 1/8" x 59.5"
Bracket dimensions: 32" x 20" x 8 7/8"

This is different from the wood "hutch" or "Back board" kit seen in the store. It is MUCH cheaper than most wall mounts.

BTW - Walmart now sells a 48" wide real wood and wood veneer TV console finished in a deep walnut ("expresso"). #001778042; Price $119 (MSRP). There is a matching audio tower (as well as desk, end tables and sofa tables). Sold under their "Home Trends" label, but manufactured by Z-Line Designs. Should make a good companion to a 42 or smaller plasma.

The design is a little more formal than "Mission-style" and should fit in with traditional LR furniture where the metal and glass would not (an issue in my house). I don't have any pics, and this line of goods was not on the website last I checked. But, it does look a lot like the Sams's floater console pictred above in style and color. The front is divided into 3 sections: an open 2-shelf center flanked by solid door compartments. Brushed aluninum pulls, legs a little skinnier.

Pic now online (http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4457219)

While RTA, it is definitely upmarket for Wallyworld. It has got to be a closeout run bought cheap. If you are looking for something inexpensive to put under the plasma, check out a local store. If it could be combined with the Sam's mount you would have a floater console under 200.

I am looking to buy a Bolero unit made by JSP. I sent email to the company asking for a nearby dealer, but the closest is over two hours away.

I am looking for a link to an online retailer for their furniture if one exists besides ABT-- they appear to only carry the Bolero in espresso and I need maple.

The JSP website makes it hard to find dealers. You can call them or just go into an audit/video store. Many non-big box stores carry the JSP line. I walked into a small shop in NJ and they had three on display. I'm looking at the Bolero and it looks great. You may also want to call some of the furniture places in NC. They will deliver and setup.

IMHO, the best thing to do is visit a store that has JSP, and write down the model number & color number you like, and then order over the phone from NC. I did this last year for a Canadel Buffet and saved over $1000, and yes they deliver & setup the piece.

Sorry- I'm not familiar with furniture places in North Carolina... can you reply with names for a couple?

Thanks!

One of them is Furnitureland South. I have bought from them before and I have found them to be excellent.

This is off topic but if someone could briefly explain how to attach a photo inside the post so it is visible (not as an attachment) - I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I've been searching for an inexpensive unit that I can put a 42" or 50" above the shelf unit and came across this:
http://www.everythingfurniture.com/pabp-entcen-set-7.html

The price seems great, but I'm gathering that it must be MDF or some other crappy composition board at that price...

Anyone know where to find something similar looking that is of decent quality for cheap?

I have been keeping an eye on this thread for a long time and I still think the Room & Board furniture looks great but not many mention it here.

woowoowoo<dot>roomandboard<dot>com/rnb/dept.do?dept=RB109&page=all (not at 5 posts yet  )

They have just added several new pieces in their media line including several like the Odori media cabinet that both somewhat hide your components while offering the ability to shoot IR remotes through the wood grid work. This style also allows great ventilation and a 100% open component area so you don't have to worry about how wide each compartment is (some "media" furniture will not accommodate standard component dimensions).

Is anyone familiar with this company and the quality of their furniture? I live in Canada so it would be expensive to get it shipped here but I am considering it. I also like the fact that you can find other furniture of similar style to finish off the room.

Sams Club also sells the plasma floater by itself (internet only). It is cheaper than any wall mount I have seen. It would attach to the back of your own stand and I trust it would be much cheaper to ship.

Can we just screw this into any stand? assuming the back of any stand must be strong enough to hold this as well as support up to 100+ lbs of the plasma?

anyone know if the stand itself at Sams has glass doors?

I don't have this but I have a Pablo coffeetable made by Quebeko. It's definitely MDF, but it's solid and looks pretty sharp. If I weren't going to put my TV in a corner, I definitely consider this unit.
