View Full Version : Official Flat Panel furniture thread [ Found possibly perfect Plasma furniture] Ralph1950 11-05-07, 05:04 PM Here, take a look at some of my stuff. You may get some ideas from the pictures. Go to completed projects. Lost of pages. Have fun. www.finewoodcreation.com bigbrother52 11-06-07, 01:42 AM All I am looking for a 50 wide TV stand that can accommodate a 9 1/2 high center channel speaker on the middle shelf (speaker needs to sit on the middle shelf since the TV will be sitting on top of the TV stand) Does anyone have alternative suggestions that would allow for a 9 ½ high center channel? Our material/color preference is metal/glass/back. Thanks. I use Synergy Twin Solution, a few designs for you to choose from. I have a 60" Pio Elite 150FD on top of the stand and on the compleatly open shelf below it has my 36" wide x 11" high Magnaplaner CC3 center. Looks great to me, solid as can be, many variations and options available. http://www.salamanderdesigns.com/syn/gal_video.jsp?image=gal_snrmb bro bigbrother52 11-06-07, 01:55 AM If you use THEIR TV mount, you can mount it high enough to put your speaker directly under the panel on the same shelf. That is yet another way to do it! Later on, add other modular cabinets to grow into, GREAT STUFF! bro lsheeley 11-06-07, 02:35 PM We are planning on hanging the plasma, but really like the look of the natural cherry (shaker look). However, I have not been able to find it ANYWHERE. Thanks for your help. zzdocxx 11-06-07, 05:48 PM I found approximately what I was looking for, on ebay, it is similar to the other models but cost only $159 + $40 shipping. I got it a couple days after ordering it and assembled it already. All I need now is a plasma set to put on it! ! ! :D My place is very small so I am forced into 42" or smaller by default. I am trying to figure out if there are any coompact mobile stands available whereby I could mount the plasma and wheel it to different locations in the room, using HDMI and power cords tethered to components located on a shelf. Anybody seen such a thing? I bet there is a thread on that, I will search! ! ! edit: something kinda like this, but not $800! ! ! ! http://www.schoolroomfurniture.com/asp/show_detail.asp?sku=DR1048&refid=MP256-DR1048 craig_wagner 11-11-07, 12:35 PM I've gone through this entire thread looking at the different stands folks are using. I really like the Salamander stuff, but the price is kind of an ouchie. I configured a system at their site (that configuration tool is very cool). I wanted something fairly open, so no sides or doors. It was a triple 21" IIRC and came to about $850 without the riser. I was looking at the StudioTech site and saw two options that are quite similar to the Salamander configuration I came up with, but they are about half the price. I've seen StudioTech mentioned on this thread, but I don't think I saw these particular models (but after 2000+ posts my eyes weren't working so well :-)). High Fidelity HF-33 (http://www.studiotech.com/products/plasma_tv_stands/high_fidelity_hf-33/index.html) Performance Series PS-33 (http://www.studiotech.com/products/plasma_tv_stands/performance_series_ps-33/index.html) BTW, this would be for a Pioneer PDP-6010FD. bigevan23 11-11-07, 02:42 PM I have a different stand with a backpanel too. DO NOT just drill holes and put a regular bolt cos it will eventually fracture the wood especial if the backpanel is mdf. Get some toggle bolts (i got hilti/toggler toggle bolts from home depot). they hold firmly and protect the backpanel. http://www.toggler.com/products_hwh_installation.html I used 8 of the 1/4 X 2-1/2 size So how would this work... would I use these toggle bolts with a universal mounting bracket to secure the wood panel of the loop media center to the bracket and then mount the bracket to the TV. I picked up a Panasonic 42 inch PZ77U, the loop media center and I will probably get this bracket: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10828&cs_id=1082801&p_id=2852&seq=1&format=2 I've never mounted anything before, I would appreciate a description of the process. Please excuse my naivete in advance. tarpon6 11-12-07, 08:34 AM Found this stand on sale at Costco.com for $219.99(thanks to Fatwallet). http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11234984 http://content.costco.com/Images/Content/Product/232791.jpg ewerx 11-12-07, 01:22 PM I had been searching for the right TV stand for a long time. I wanted something like the Avion but not as expensive. And my biggest constraint was my large B&W LCR60 center channel, which seemed to not fit in anything I found. But Ikea now has a new line of shelving units called BESTA. I bought 3 of these: http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/80102146 I added the optional metal legs (you can also get casters) and put them side by side (touch each other flush). Together they are the perfect width, perfect height, and have all the shelf space I need for my large center and all the other things. I left the back off for air circulation and wiring. You can get doors as well but I chose not to. I am very happy with it and it was all under $200! valetudo/HD 11-12-07, 08:33 PM Hello guys, I just returned from Big Lots where I picked up a beatiful TV stand for only $129. It is similar to some $300+ stands that I almost got at Circuit City. It very closely resembles some of the Z-line stands, and my girlfriend actually liked this one better. I in no way work for Big Lots, just wanted to share for any of you price weary folks like me. Build quality is just as good from what I can tell, with both chrome accents and black tempered glass. Now I just have to wait for my new Panisonic Plasma to arrive.... The picture doesn't do it justice, if you live near a Big Lots and need a TV stand, you should go and see it. http://www.biglots.com/Images/Furniture/Item/Large/610008840.jpg Our Price: $129.99 FEATURES & BENEFITS Three black tempered glass shelves with polished edges Wire management back panel Square metal tubing with chrome plated accents Accomodates most televisions; CRT, PLASMA, DLP & LCD not exceeding 240 lbs. SKU# 610008840 Dimensions: 48W x 22D x 22.25H It very closely resembles this Z-line TV stand from CC, http://www.circuitcity.com/IMAGE/product/detail/zln/EC.ZLN.Z221S.JPG The size of this one is 55"W x 24"D x 22" H i have that same tv stand and i love it. it can hold my 50 inch plasma and all my receivers perfectly. the the top tempered glass is rated for 240 lbs! and the other two shelfs are rated for 100 lbs each. good bang for the buck. Dream1 11-13-07, 09:05 PM I got this Bush VS13960 at Best Buy for $170.00. Wicked Sick Deal! I put it together myself, took almost 3 hours. Solid, very solid! http://www.betraythis.com/forum/gallery/albums/userpics/10025/IMG_1952.JPG Norde 11-14-07, 01:29 AM I did a search for Zoom Room on this thread and got no response, so check out.... http://www.zoom-room.com/# Wait for the animation and do not miss the video, which I thought was going to turn into a porno or a horror movie. To quote Will Smith, " I gotta get me one of these". Or not. ssabripo 11-15-07, 08:03 AM anyone know where to get the StudioTech U-22T for a decent price? ssabripo 11-16-07, 10:12 AM This is REALLY getting frustrating :o AVSscience store no longer has access to the StudioTech U-22T from their distributors, and UnbeatableStore has bumped their price up to MSRP again (and the coupon no longer works either). Does anyone know where I can get a good dealer that will have discounts on this stand? Ed Weinman 11-16-07, 10:19 AM I'll understand if no one knows, but...here goes! My wife wants a bedroom entertainment/chest of drawers unit, approx. 6-7 feet wide, with open shelves (2-3) for equipment and the rest, drawers for clothing, etc. Oh, and it must be white, approx. 30-32 inches high and about 15-19 inches deep. (And modern looking). And be able to sustain a 70ish pound LCD on top. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. jbarbbcuny 11-17-07, 07:40 AM I would investigate bedroom furniture and buy pieces from the same line (same color and style) and place it together so it looks like one piece. You would need two dressers with a bookcase or other matching shelves in between the two, if you have enough space. OR Go to room and board.com. They have the linear line which you can have configured to your needs. http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/collection.do?method=get&id=378244&cat=2058899 The problem is that the lightest wood is maple. I guess you could paint it. Ed Weinman 11-17-07, 01:38 PM jbarbbcuny, Thanks for your input...the unit(s) look wonderful, however, (as you said), the problem would be the possible painting of it (not to mention the price!). Thanks, again. CDutch 11-18-07, 02:51 PM Anyone here have any suggesstions for a decent but not overly expensive (less than $500) wood corner unit that would work for a 52xbr4? I've searched the thread with limited success so I figured I'd post and see if anyone has come across anything. temeone 11-20-07, 08:47 PM I have the same stand: :D http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/3631/mysetup01bh4.jpg I replaced the cheap knob with this one from Amerock (Available at Home Depot) http://img480.imageshack.us/img480/4808/amerock8oo.jpg I replaced the feet as well. It's a Linear Media Console from Room and Board. You can customize them to your liking. They have different types of wood to choose from, different shelf, drawer, cabinet configurations and lots of choices for cabinet doors too. I went for the open double center region with walnut wood. Its custom made so it takes awhile from when you order it to when it arrives (~4 weeks but could be as long as 6). http://members.arstechnica.com/x/dev/IMG_1166.jpg http://members.arstechnica.com/x/dev/IMG_1170.jpg Bandsharp 11-21-07, 12:34 PM Here's what I ended up buying for my Sony 52XBR4... You should be proud and I take it your very happy with the Sony? NeilK 11-21-07, 12:50 PM We purchased a Z-Line Designs Phantom 50 to mount our new Sony KDL-40W3000 LCD 40" HDTV. We needed room for a large center speaker and did not want to hang the TV on the wall. We like the way the stand offers an adjustable height hanging solution without that being wall-mounted. It has plenty of room for additional components. We currently have the center speaker sitting under the TV on the top shelf, which is blocking from view the center column on which the mounting gear and the wire management reside. And we have the cable box and Toshiba HD-DVD on the next shelf, and our Denon 1803 and a Wii on the bottom. I am debating adding an old VCR on the bottom to view old VCR tapes if desired. We are also considering swapping the center speaker and the cable box/DVD player, and lowering the TV another 2 inches. This stand is a bit steep price-wise, $380 on sale at CC, but is very well made. Brushed chrome and black smoked glass, it is quite modern looking and compliments the TV and our speakers. It allows the TV to swivel side to side as well. The one negative we have run into so far is that it tilts the TV back slightly. I also have to do a bit of leveling of the mounts, but am holding off until we get the new rails. However, Z-Line Designs is sending us a pair of alternate mounting rails that will hold the TV straight up and down. Pardon the flash in the attached picture, it is the only glare that we ever get on the TV though :D Even a full wall sliding glass door/wall to the left of the TV does not create any glare. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d95/Neilkn/2045743396.jpg To add on to /update this, I had called Z-Line Designs on Monday morning this week to inquire about the TV being mounted in a tilted back position. They told me that they would send free of charge the alternate rails to mount it straight up and that it would take between 1 and 2 weeks. I figured with a holiday this week, that was reasonable. My wife emailed me today that the rails were delivered today around noon time. That is 2 days from call to in hand. That is fantastic customer service in my book. Z-Line Designs has definitely earned my respect, and my recommendation should anyone ask about them. The TV has been exchanged for a 46 inch version, the KDL-46W3000. It looks even better on the stand as it is the same width as the stand itself. The Toshiba HD-DVD has also found its way back to the store, and is replaced by a Sony PS3 sitting on top of our old VCR player. As soon as we saw Warner Brothers switch over, so did we ... Blu-ray all the way. CDutch 11-21-07, 03:48 PM Here's what I ended up buying for my Sony 52XBR4... It's a Linear Media Console from Room and Board. You can customize them to your liking. Pictures can be deceeving though. dyamakawa 11-22-07, 02:45 AM That's a sweet looking set up:cool:. You should be proud and I take it your very happy with the Sony? Thanks! Yes I'm very happy with the Sony XBR4. I originally was looking at plasma and the Samsung 81 and 71 series but the glossy panels had me worried. I normally sit in the room with the windows open like that. Didn't feel like I was giving up much by going with the Sony to get the matte screen. Great setup. Out of curiosity, what's your viewing distance? I'm debating between a 46 and 52 XBR4 and it appears that your distance is similar to mine. Pictures can be deceeving though. Thanks! Viewing distance from the sofa is about 10 feet. I went back and forth on 46 vs 52 inch. Once I got it home it felt a bit too big but I did have a much smaller TV previously so it just took time to get used to. It now feels perfect in the room and I would be kicking myself if I went with the 46 :) It helps that I was able to work Best Buy down on the price. Now I need some speakers, and a Bluray or HD-DVD player and I'll be set. It is a replica though :) Its just ever so slightly different and the material isn't the same as an authentic/original (glass top is not as thick, stain is not as durable) but still looks pretty good and takes abuse. I prefer to spend in 200s or 300s at the most. Thanks in advance mahesh I had the same problem and I had used shelving like salamander designs with shelves and colored 5/8 inch all-thread rod. I like the open shelving and I've done a good job of hiding the wires. I had a wood shop make beautiful shelves and I went to a steel dealer and purchased the all thread in any length. It really gives you some ability to always change and add or delete. The other thing I'd say is that I see many people purchase really nice pieces and they never match or rather rarely match the room and the TV. My point is that if you can afford a 58-inch plasma than you can ask someone to make a stand for you. I know I am usually happier with the furniture made by a local professional we have here in the Poconos. BTW, which plasma, where and what did you pay. Wrong thread so maybe if you wouldn't mind sending me a message. I just purchased a 50 inch Plasma and am happy with it but I do have a large enough theater for it and am still questioning my purchase. john drew138 11-26-07, 12:10 AM Finally found a place that will custom build a piece for me. I browsed through this forum quite a bit a couple of months ago. My wife and I looked at a lot of different options (salamander, bdi, sanus etc) and settled on the JSP-Mozart. It is very well made and looks like a nice furniture piece. It fit my requirement for center channel speaker placement. The first piece shipped (by ABT electronics) was damaged in transit. But they took care of sending a replacement pretty quickly. Here are a few pictures of my setup. The kit was from Costco. It says Model HT1506 on the package. It had six, 15" lightbars, a hub to plug them in and a controller. On Cyron's web site, I see HT1502 which only has 2 light bars. Of course, Costco was a lot cheaper for the 6 lightbar version than what the cyron website shows for the 2 lightbar kit ;) raidermc 12-08-07, 01:08 PM Found this baby at Best buy as a new line of plasma stands that have'nt hit the show room yet. And yes that IS a Pro 150 FD:D yysenhimer 12-09-07, 08:45 PM 110, Sanus Java JFV65 stand, Radiient speakers I spent a lot of time searching hundreds of posts looking for a simple stand without glass shelves. I found a DLP stand for $399 but then realized the weight rating was only 108 pounds and I didn't feel comfortable putting a 99 pound unit on it so it was back to square one. The other problem was that the 110 with the speakers installed measured about 58". I didn't like the look of it hanging over the sides of a stand made for a 50" unit so I bought one made for a 60" and it fits perfectly. I am very happy with the build quality. It was a little difficult to put together though because none of the pieces were marked. Thanks to everyone who posted pics of their setup. Is it a good piece? Would it work well with the Pioneer 6010fd? xrox 12-10-07, 10:43 PM If so, what are your thoughts? Is it a good piece? Would it work well with the Pioneer 6010fd?I bought the first version and it was flawed in design as there was little support in the centre for any size TV (actually couldn't even support it's own weight) and quickly began to sag. The newer version seems to have a centre support and should work better. Also the finish looks awesome but is very easily scratched so you really have to baby it. I don't know what kind of wood they use but it has some visible grain that doesn't go well with the black semi gloss finish. The biggest plus and reason I bought it was that it was very functional for my needs (I wanted open space for centre speaker, and electronic components) and closed space for media and other stuff. The extra top shelf with door is just perfect for consoles/controllers and remotes. In summary: Pros: -Functionality (space, mix of open and closed space) Cons: -Build quality (I can only comment on first version) -Finish (easily scratched) mlfarris 12-11-07, 03:56 PM Thanks for the response. I am getting the Pioneer 6010fd and the Pioneer 92txh receiver. It looks like the piece though may not be large enough to hold my center channel speaker as it is about 19" wide and about 7" tall. albiemanmike 12-15-07, 11:38 PM Well we purchased a TH-50PZ77U the day before Thanksgiving and put it on our existing crappy tv stand. I hated the way it looked and I couldn't put my huge Boston Acoustics VR-12 center channel anywhere but on the floor next to the stand. This made the sound seem strange so I bit the bullet and after much surfing/reading bought a Z-Line Designs stand at CC. We are very pleased with this stand and it is very sturdy. I wanted a stand that gave the Panel a wall hung look and this fit the bill perfectly. It was a bit pricey but well worth it. Check out the pics of the rear mounting arrangement very beefy and it articulates to allow swiveling the panel 20 deg. (est) in either direction. The glass shelves are very thick and only hold the AV components so i am not concerned about failure of the shelves as has been seen here in the past. If anyone has any specific questions or needs more pics I would be happy to take any you might need and post them. http://www.creativejewelrydesigns.biz/TV/Panny77U.jpg http://www.creativejewelrydesigns.biz/TV/Panny77Ucloseup.jpg http://www.creativejewelrydesigns.biz/TV/ZLinemount.jpg http://www.creativejewelrydesigns.biz/TV/ZLinemount1.jpg caeguy 12-16-07, 09:54 AM Looks great! I have the OK to go 60" Plasma (Pio 150FD) if I can resolve the furniture riddle. Yes, has taken months to get WAF parameters specified and we are close. I have the OK to put plasma on a stand of some kind. I would like something about 20 inches high probably over 60 inches wide. This leaves a lot of flexibility. However, wife has a few requirements. I look at stands (SDI, SANUS, salamander ... to me a wood stand is a wood stand .. I am having trouble with this one.) 1. Cannot look modern, must "fit" with <b>Stickley</b> wood furniture REF Wiki entry on Stickley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustav_Stickley) 2. Minimal metal may be visible, all wood look preferred, glass and/or grills OK as long as it does not look "modern" or "techy" I am more technically oriented and a lot stands look GREAT to me. I am "blind" to what she wants. However, it must support 200 lbs, preferably overdesigned for 300 lbs. It must hold several components and a center speaker. It must have some accomodation for power and signal wiring. (I know that I could do this with a couple of orange crates with a couple of 2 x 12 x 6' pieces of wood and decent 19" rack for the gear.) Please help. Finding the right piece will help me close the Plasma deal. I don't like to shop for furniture but I must on this one. Budget could be $3,000 for an extraordinary piece but prefer to spend about half that if possible. Thanks, in advance, for any suggestions you might have. Kuranda albiemanmike 12-16-07, 08:49 PM The center channel is 8.5" tall X 25" long it is about the same deep as it is tall. There is maybe another inch or so between the top of the speaker and the bottom of the panel. the panel is mounted as high as it can go on the stand so if you have a center that is talled than 9" you might be in trouble. I have not measured the distance between the top shelf and the middle shelf but sitting here looking at it seems that it is a bit taller than 9" so you could put a bigger center on the middle shelf instead of on top. Furniture is an area where I am totally ignorant. You have helped our marriage bridge a gap in communications. So far the wife asked about size of the diamond case furniture :-) !!! You don't know how big a break through that is for us. When we are talking about size we finally got past the "your AV system will never look good". I did not know that STICKLEY was a big deal. I better say that name with more respect and maybe she will begin to respect my interest in AV-tech. Funny, I had to learn about "her" furniture from an AV forum. Anyway, better to learn any way I can than to never learn at all. Again, thanks to the AV-forum team for coming through with some very helpful information for a furniture-ignorant guy. I am interested in the Markor from Ikea, (in stock for pickup) and the Bush VS13960 (listed at Best Buy but unavailable for pick up or delivery in my area) The Bush VS13988-03 (Riverwood) also looks good and is listed as a "special order" item from Best Buy with a $200 delivery tag. Racks and Stands has the Riverwood too. I like the black look of those Bush models but I don't really want to wait for delivery. How is the ventilation with the Markor. It looks like it has a ton of space. I want to put a 52 inch lcd on top and use it for a center channel speaker, about 4 components and 2 consoles. It looks like it woud work with the Markor. It would match the floors too. Also, there holes in the back for wires? It's hard to tell from the pictures. Thanks. johnfrum 12-22-07, 10:25 AM mikeny, I've got the Markor stand with two adjacent glass-door bookcases -- very inexpensive for solid wood furniture, and nothing flimsy about it. I've got all my components stacked in the middle section. Ventilation is fine there, probably not so good behind the glass-fronted doors at the sides. Side shelf widths are pretty tight anyway -- only 14 1/4" vs 18 1/2" for the centre shelves. There is a small hole at the back, but if you get the Markor take my advice and enlarge it or add one or two others. I did manage to get all my cables through it but it was a royal pain. -JF- mikeny 12-22-07, 10:43 AM Thank you John. I will consider this. I'm also thinking of the Techcraft THC SWP60 available for in store pick up at CC. http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=160674 mikeny 12-22-07, 04:03 PM Well, we went to both Ikea and Circuit City. The Markor's side shelves, seemed too narrow. It wouldn't work out. CC had the the Techcraft SWP60 and it seemed like it will be more appropriate for our gear so we bought it. They even had it on display with another Samsung 52 inch LCD. (similar to the one we're getting). It looked like a great match! CC made some some cool arrangements, matching the "10% off: web only with pick-up" price. They also worked with me to iron out a fair service charge for delivery and installation, plus the haul away of an older entertainment center. Hopefully they can also help with the relocating of my 193 lb. TV and it's stand. They blew me over by saying this all going to happen tomorrow. Wow! I'll try to post how it works out. duckdodgerz 12-22-07, 09:12 PM How about this? It's about 8" narrower than the one you have -- looks like I'd lost the media storage on the sides, which I wouldn't use anyways. I don't have any HT components except my cable box and DVD player right now, but I like that open top shelf for future expansion. Does the enclosed bottom area have enough ventilation for a receiver and/or HTPC? Are there cutouts on the back to get wires in to the lower area? How is the quality of the screws and other connectors? The two reviews of the one I'm looking at both complain about the screws being hard to use and the reviews on the one you got all complain about poor directions. 28" tall -- not too bad? I'm finding it quite hard to find a stand that I think I'd like. I eliminate a lot of choices by refusing to get glass shelves (why is glass so popular? I have a glass top computer desk and it is a true PITA to keep clean, so I've decided I don't want glass sheles). And I don't really want glass doors, but I won't let them be a deal break -- the mesh cloth would be ideal. All the ones I like are too wide -- I think it'd look kinda bad to have a 40" TV on a 60" wide stand when my "tv wall" is only about 75 inches and I'd want room for a sub. I want the top shelf to be open to accomodate a center speaker. Salamander's Twin 20 or 30 would be ideal, but they're more than I care to spend. mikeny 12-25-07, 09:30 AM Too funny, CC brought the Techcraft SWP60, as expected the next day, but yet missing 2 shelf dowels and pre-assembled. That's what I get for being lazy. LOL. No big deal for now, as we borrowed 2 from a DVD storage unit we had which fit. They told me to call Techcraft, and they'll send me a whole package of them. The picture I uploaded was from 2 nights ago, and I just wanted to see if the gear would be able to be put in and out with the doors on. (including the Onkyo center channel speaker in the top middle section and the Onkyo receiver below). I had read all the reviews which said you need to put the components in before installing the doors so I was I concerned as it already had the doors on. I just wanted to test it out. There was no problem at all. Anyway, nothing is connected in that picture. Last night I connected everything including the audio receiver. I put the UPS and other surge in the cabinet as well, so I'll be able to get it really close to the wall. The TV is coming tomorrow. I'm psyched. All the video cables are out waiting. My wife and I really like the piece. The middle screened in section is cool. Of course, with it closed, you don't know what the audio receiver is displaying. (besides going by your ears) :). It looks better in person. PS Although, they did relocate my current TV and it's stand, they could not remove the entertainment center where that was going so that needed to be put on another wall for now. We'll use it for storage. Tenorsaw 12-25-07, 05:57 PM Too funny, CC brought the Techcraft SWP60, as expected the next day, but yet missing 2 shelf dowels and pre-assembled. Been through this whole thread and all the links. Thank you in advance, Regards, Cpt. You're looking for the same thing I was just looking for. I spent I don't know how many hours looking and couldn't come up with anything. Ended up really compromising because I couldn't find something in the price I wanted to pay. Do enjoy what I bought though -- will get pictures up tomorrow. The StudioTech U-22D (http://www.studiotech.com/products/component_cabinets/ultra_u-22d/index.html) has optional steel pillars that seem to attach to the back and allow you to attach your choice of wall mount. That's what I would have gotten if my budget allowed. In my case, that would have ended up being about twice what I wanted to spend. But your definition of "expensive" may be different than mine. One of the reviews for the Tech Craft SWP48 (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Techcraft-48-TV-Stand-SWP48/sem/rpsm/oid/170886/catOid/-12892/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do) mentions that there is an optional mount you can get for it. It is the PLM50 (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Tech-Craft-Solutions-Series-Flat-Panel-Mount-PLM50/sem/rpsm/oid/186048/catOid/-12892/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do), I think. The manual for the mount on TechCraft's website (http://www.techcraft.net/htm/index.htm) (it's in the Solution series on the left menu) doesn't mention the exact models that it fits, so you may want to call to confirm. I wasn't a big fan of that stand (it did look nice, but it wouldn't fit with the rest of the stuff in my place). It would have been more in my budget though. I can't recall if this one had cloth inserts to replace the glass. For anyone else shopping around, this Laurier 60" stand (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Laurier-60-TV-Stand-566361/sem/rpsm/oid/159266/catOid/-12892/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do) was selling for $300 unassembled / $370 assembled at my local Circuit City. It was really a nice looking piece of furniture. I wish it would have fit in my apartment. Kuranda 12-28-07, 08:30 AM I went with a Diamondcase TT-400. I'm very happy with the design and the quality, though the price was steep (like high quality furniture) and unlike the sample pieces I was sent the walnut finish turned out to have reddish tones, like a mix of 2/3 walnut and 1/3 cherry. (I may have it refinished someday to match my favorite finish.) Also wasn't happy with freight company's bad communication. Other advantages are: ... . CraiginNJ: The Diamondcase on the web got my wife's attention until she wanted to see it first. She is very particular about about color matching and finish. Also, I asked Diamondcase for T&C's on shipping, ding repair, etc. The response was "pick a piece and we will talk." That was not good enough for the wife. She like's service from a local company that can send out a repair man to fix ding's on delivery and/or refuse delivery. And also to repair the damage I may do to her furnture over time. I have a poor track record in that regard. So we are now probably going with the BDI Novia 8429 (http://www.bdiusa.com/avfurniture/novia_8429.shtml)(not available through bb-Magnolia on the web) for a 60 inch Plasma since we could see one in local showroom and custom order any of the (limited) configurations we wanted. MSRP is as expensive ($2300) as Diamondcase, I think, but they have 25% off sale which brought the price down to $1700 (plus 7% sales tax plus $100 delivery). I got to test out the BDI wheels by moving it around in the showroom. They were hidden very well and worked smoothly. Ventilation and removable back seemed to be very good. Allowances and cable velcro appeared to exceed what I need for wiring. It appeared to have enough AV features that I could easily make a neat installation out of it. Anyway, we started with "nothing will do". Then Diamondcase got the wife's attention, thanks to this forum, but the T&C's were not to her satisfaction. She wants a local brick & mortar source for furniture to get the service if/when needed. I think being able to see the piece and talk to a real furniture person in a real furniture store made the difference for her. I think the stores name is Dane Decor in the Philadelphia area. If your significant other wants to talk furniture (not AV), then this may help you. It helped me. I think we have navigated back to a middle-of-the-road-furniture-solution for us. This forum has been a great help to me in getting to some agreement at home on how to proceed. Thanks to you all for writing your experiences. I ended up going with one with lots of glass and not enclosed, how's that for a complete 180 from what I really wanted? I don't have kids, so I could be more flexible in my choices. You say all in one -- are you thinking like an armoire with doors that can close? Or are you wanting something similar to the TechCraft things I linked previously with an enclosure for the equipment and a separate floating mount? I know that some of these stands come with cloth panels to use in place of the glass, like this Bello WAVS-320 (http://www.bello.com/index.php?partition=show_product&categ_id=39&prod_id=176&tab=2). $400 for that stand, $200 for the mount from racksandstands.com. Most "wall units" are pretty traditional, and our preference is more scandanavian. jzh797 12-28-07, 12:02 PM Here is my setup: http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj234/jzh797s/DSC02220.jpg I got this stand for a whopping $99 on Black Friday from Walmart of all places. hcarman 12-28-07, 09:30 PM I have been looking for tv stand but not in hurry since I don't have tv yet :) But walkin Costco and saw this selling for $199 and the wood finish matches my other furniture, so what the heck and give it a try. continue on other posts.... 3-post url limit!! hcarman 12-28-07, 09:32 PM The display model looks fairly good and sturdy. I haven't assembled yet and the only thing I am not sure its floating mount may be little higher than eye-level. But if there's any adjust allow and/or good viewing distance, it may be alright. I will report back after I get it done. hcarman 12-28-07, 09:38 PM If this stand doesn't work out, it's still nice stand for other room. Then I may have to try to build my own. Enough for now. I should be able to post pics below... hcarman 12-28-07, 09:40 PM This is the manufacturer picture. I'll snap some pictures of it and post them up later today. perryw 12-29-07, 05:50 PM I ended up getting the Bell'o PVSC9848E (http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Bell-O-50-TV-Stand-PVSC9848E/sem/rpsm/oid/184705/catOid/-12892/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do) from Circuit City for my new Samsung LN-T4065 to sit on. As I've mentioned, I was looking for an all wood enclosed stand to hold the components and have the TV sitting on top of it. Didn't really want glass. Couldn't find what I wanted for a price I wanted to pay, so this was my compromise. It's hard getting a picture that shows the color, but the wood is a very dark brown. The curved wood towers really helped sway me. I couldn't get a straight on picture I was happy with, and this one isn't very good, but it'll have to do: http://www.webmasterp.com/gallery/d/4052-2/IMG_2034.JPG (http://www.webmasterp.com/gallery/v/things/tv/IMG_2034.JPG.html) (click for bigger version) The receiver isn't hooked up to anything right now -- my sister brought it to me last week because they got a new one from a friend that was moving to Europe. I guess I'll hunt for a couple speakers after I recover from buying this stuff. primetime6 12-30-07, 10:05 PM Yes I am reposting this... I am looking for some help: I am going to build a wood stand for basically just our componets...We have our Plasma mounted on the wall with the center channel speak above it. I will try to post a picture tonight but right now we just have our DVD and cable box on top of an old chest as well and the 2 front speakers. My wife would liek something with like 2 shelves so we can free up the top for photo frames and such I am looking for some plans on how to build one primetime6 12-30-07, 10:44 PM Finally took a photo tonight and here is what we have so far: http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i11/primetime6/Plasma002.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i11/primetime6/Plasma001.jpg pdqgp 12-30-07, 11:07 PM My furniture setup was a bit tougher to find. With the configuration in our family room, the TV is in a corner. Corner/wedge shaped items are a little harder to find and I needed one that would accomodate my Paradigm center speaker and of course look good. So many TV stands look like crap IMO. This unit has smoked glass shelving and cherry wood legs. Nice that they match so well with the Paradigm Studio 60's I have in red too :) It's pretty deep since it's made for a DLP TV. I liked it as it allows the unit to "fit" into the corner pretty closely and it also has plenty of depth for my components. Lastly, it gives me room to hide things too. I have my Video camera and tapes stacked behind the TV on it's base and a stack of DVD's that we have yet to watch stacked behind my center speaker. You can't see them at all which is great. http://www.pbase.com/pdqgp/image/90418687.jpg Riot Nrrrd 01-01-08, 03:15 PM That's a nice setup pdqgp - who makes that stand? I have Sanus cherry components for my gear and DVDs, so if & when I make the move to plasma I'd like something big like this to hold the TV and STB. How wide is the Panny and how tall is the unit at the glass level, is it around 2 feet tall? Riot Nrrrd 01-02-08, 05:29 AM As a followup, I'd like some opinions on this: As I just mentioned, I have Sanus cherry components to the left and right of my Sony TV. If I move to a Plasma, it will be a black one. (And big - probably a 60" or a 65") If anyone out there had/has cherry furniture and gotten a black TV, did you buy a black stand for the TV to make it "blend in" and not distract from the picture tube, or did you buy a cherry stand to make it match everything else you have (and, presumably, don't think the cherry underneath the TV distracts from viewing)? Also, I live in Earthquake Country - I'm around 20 miles (as the crow flies) from both the 1971 Sylmar and 1994 Northridge earthquake epicenters. I wasn't worried about my big old Sony 32" XBR TV falling in the 1994 quake, and I'm not worried about my heavy (302 pound) Sony 34" XBR HDTV falling if one happened tomorrow, either. But if I move to a Plasma, I'd be very worried that it would fall over if there were a quake and it was on one of these table stands. Would a "console stand" (much like the Whalen pictured on the previous page of this thread) be likely to withstand such an event or am I pretty much resigned to a wall mount if I want to be completely safe and protected against such an eventuality? clnconcpts 01-04-08, 09:06 AM The Ethan Allen web link posted didnt work.Found their site, just dont know whick one is the one we are talking about markdutt 01-04-08, 11:53 AM If I move to a Plasma, it will be a black one. It may not be the aesthetic you are looking for, but the StudioTech Ultra U-22T might be worth a look. It's large, so it will nicely fit your 60" plasma. It's sturdy, so it probably won't collapse even in a stronger earthquake. It's cherry (rosewood, actually) and black, so it might match your furniture and blend with the TV. Also a SoCal resident, I too worry about the effect of an earthquake on a flat panel. I'm most concerned about tipping. All of the manuals I have seen describe ways of "securing" the panel to the stand, but these usually involve some sort of strap/leash/cable that extends from the back of the panel to the back of the stand or the wall. These would only seem to secure against forward tipping. While it may be that panels are more inclined to tip forward, I'm not at all confident a strong earthquake couldn't tip one backwards. Or at least I'm not willing to bet several thousand dollars on it. :( Anyone aware of any more robust ways of securing a plasma panel to a stand? ssabripo 01-04-08, 07:35 PM Finally installed my Studiotech U-22T in rosewood....it is a VERY nice piece, and compliments the speakers perfectly. I love it! I got the longer version (8529). It's solid! Very heavy, nicely laid out with sliding, slotted doors in the back. A little expensive tho but the quality is awesome! tnord 01-06-08, 05:14 PM i searched through pretty much this entire thread to try and find what i wanted for a TV stand. there's lots of quality options out there, but man do they cost a lot. i just couldn't justify spending more on the furniture than i did on the TV. the salamander triple was pretty much exactly what i wanted, but it was still about $800, not to mention it was too wide for the space i had available. i was about ready to give up on finding a quality piece, when a friend put me in contact with a guy that does custom furniture as sort of a hobby. i gave him some drawings, measurements, and told him what i needed. he built it in a few days, and gave it to me unfinished to stain. the whole thing cost me under $400, and i love it. there are notches in all the shelves and uprights to run cables, i had him put in the nice european hinges, and everything fits together pretty well. the TV is a sharp 46'' to give you an idea of the size of it. HippoDan 01-06-08, 05:23 PM The home theater is finally coming together. I ended up going with the Laurier 60" that I found at Circuit City. I was actually looking at a different one, but my new HTPC wouldn't fit in it... It doesn't have a door for the center section, but I'm thinking of having a piece of glass cut an putting in on hinges. (The outer two sections slide) I didn't know it, but it has LED lights pre-installed in the ceiling of each section. I don't have pictures of it in place yet, we're building a wall to mount the TV on first. Best of all, it was mis-marked at my Circuit City, and I got a great deal. Normal price $425, I paid $319 (Weirdest part is that it was listed as "$319 Unassembled.... $389 with Firedog assembly" But this cabinet only comes pre-assembled. So of course I told them I would assemble myself ;)) -Dan HienD 01-07-08, 01:21 AM The home theater is finally coming together. I ended up going with the Laurier 60" that I found at Circuit City. The prick at The Brick (Pun intended) wouldn't budge one cent on the price. So I'm going to go with the Techcraft SWP60 which is a more reasonable $379 at Costco. I really like the room in the middle for a centre speaker. Great value IMO sinces it's wood veneer and not laminate. Will post some pick when it's setup. I was going to go with the Techcraft SWP60 in the first place, but I just ordered a PC case, and it was bigger than I thought. I ran off to the store to measure the Techcraft again, and it would be pretty tight fit. It has hinges on the inside that take up some of the width right near the front, and I was going to need all the depth I could get for at 16" deep case + plugs and wires. A full 17" wide item 6" tall would need most of the room in there. BTW, Interior dimensions for the SWP60 are: 18" deep, 18" wide (on the outer sections, 19" wide in the center) 14.5" tall inside. The first inch or so is compromised by the hinges. They're 3/4" wide at the very front and and about 3/8" wide by the end, on one side of each section only. Anyway, while measuring I saw the Laurier unit, and since it doesn't have hinges it give me more interior room, and kind of matches our Ikea "Besta" system. Of course the price was the clincher. Do let us know how it goes together, and send a pic when complete. I'll try to do the same. P.S. $600 Canadian? But that's only like $604.29 in the US:(... I love the setup and have recently purchased the optional Avion 8540-1 television mount. The problem is that the "universal mounting bars" supplied by BDI do not allow for a centered mounting on the 52XBR2. BDI is aware of this and says they need to construct "custom" mounting bars for my Sony. Am I really the first person that has tried to use the 8540-1 mounting kit with a 52" XBR2? And why would the mounting holes on the XBR2 be so abnormal that a "universal mounting bar" can't accommodate it - what ever happened to the VESA mounting standard? Anyway, I am VERY happy with 52XBR2, very happy with the BDI Avion furniture, and very happy with BDI's customer service to provide me with a custom solution. I just can't wait until we're all happy together! PWH1 01-09-08, 06:34 PM Critical success factor (CSF) = wife acceptance factor (WAF) = "pretty furniture" Request for assistance. I have the OK to go 60" Plasma (Pio 150FD) if I can resolve the furniture riddle. Yes, has taken months to get WAF parameters specified and we are close. Kuranda WAF = Wifes Against Flatscreens!!! Furniture is so subjective, but here's why I chose this (not in any particular order): 1) My first choice in terms of look/style! 2) Cherry swatch exactly matched my Polk speakers (RTi8 fronts). 3) Needed a "larger" stand to fit future 60" plasma. I wanted a little extra room on the sides for both practical and aesthetic reasons. 4) Enclosed cabinet, well ventilated, but with easy opening to the back. Depth may be a problem with fully closed back - got an onkyo 805. Adjustable inside wooden shelves supports up to 50 lbs; onkyo is 51. I've been eye-ballin' the BDI's recently and looked at some at Magnolia yesterday....they are reeeeally nice in regards to fit, finish, build and details in style and features (like hidden wheels), there is a noticeable difference, but considering my budget I don't know if it's really worth paying at least double for a BDI piece than a techcraft, z-line, bell'o etc. but if money wasn't an issue, I'd be all over the BDI stands. if anyone is interested, racksandstands.com has a longer and shorter (64.5in w x 18in H 2 shelf) BDI 8027 - Axis Series TV Stand - Cognac for closeout 50% off, real good deal if you ever seen how much these cost regularly. I have been told that if I go this route I should put the speaker as far forward as possible and pack all of the open space with sound adsorbing material. That said, obviously a number of people do put their speakers (or at least the center channel) in the cabinet. My question is to those folks who have done so. Have you noticed any problem with the sound by doing this? Have you taken any steps to reduce the internal reverberations? Thanks Ray dgmayor 01-14-08, 01:27 PM Its somewhat hard to tell the color from these pictures, is it more dark brown / expresso or more black in person? Also, is this furniture flat-packed or comepletely assembled when purchased? Does Costco offer delivery? Do you think this would fit into the back of a mini van? I went and saw it in person today. It's a very dark cherry wood, which unfortunately for me will probably mean it's a no go with the wife. If it was dark brown/ espresso, it'd be perfect. Costco had another last week that I thought would have been perfect for 499. Saw it on Thursday. Brought wife in Saturday and it was gone. sigh.. msccchels 01-15-08, 03:59 PM Its somewhat hard to tell the color from these pictures, is it more dark brown / expresso or more black in person? Also, is this furniture flat-packed or comepletely assembled when purchased? Does Costco offer delivery? Do you think this would fit into the back of a mini van? costco doesn't deliver unless it's something they sell on their site, and I haven't been able to find it on the site. My husband and I just bought one yesterday. We haven't pulled it out of the box, yet, but we loved the one on the floor at our local warehouse. We're out of Utah, so it sounds like they have them at quite a few locations. The biggest appeal for this one (totally let my husband have his pick - since he'll be doing ALL the setup of the system) is the fact it has a power strip (but not a surge protector) built in with a metal grate to prevent overheating of the components. The feature I liked the most was interchangeable doors - wood, glass, or speaker cloth - all of which are included in the pricing/box. It weighs just under 200 lbs in the box, and is about 48-55 inches long....probably would fit in the back of a mini van. You'll need to put seats down, for sure. Johnny Dunn 01-15-08, 11:58 PM :mad:Should be here next week so I'll post pics boxed, assembly, finished. Busted my budget tho. Got it locally. BDI is HQ'd in this area BTW. Assuming there's a little safety factor thrown in there. 5) Smoked glass to see thru into the cabinet, but not distract, and to get IR thru. 6) Quality and small details. Even the hinges are Italian. Extremely well geared toward A/V equipment. If you guys get a chance to see this one for yourselves, just check out the technical detailing/features around the doors. Very well thought out. I'll post pix and impressions. (If any BDI reps are reading this, please send commission check. Err, maybe way until after my post-assembly impressions). Seems to have been a case of the sales rep promising more than he could deliver, literally - will be at their warehouse on the the 31st, not delivered this week as I was originally told during the purchase. Johnny Dunn 01-18-08, 11:20 PM I have been looking at some of the very attractive units that members have or that have been referenced here. Although I have considered some of the cabinets where the speakers are placed inside I have been very reluctant to go that route. I have been told by some of the speaker manufacturers that this will degrade the sound significantly because the sound will bounce around inside the cabinet. Have you noticed any problem with the sound by doing this? Have you taken any steps to reduce the internal reverberations? Thanks Ray I haven't done so Ray, but I'd say that's good advice from the speaker folks. Good question btw. I would imagine the sound being muffled - soundstage not as crisp depending on the severity of the enclosure, resulting in muffled dialogue obviously. I'm guessing there would be some sort of mesh material to allow the sound to leave the cabinet and get to you. My rudimentary knowledge of physics leads me to recommend the following order or preference: 1) Place center as close to display centered. That means not confined in any cabinets normally. Above the display, or right below, on top of the cabinet and not inside the cabinet. 2) If placing in a cabinet, preference would probably be an open shelf or at least an option to remove the front panel of the drawer - yes, forward as possible and no need for sound dampening material. 3) If enclosed in a drawer-like cabinet, then follow the speaker manufacturer's recommendations. I'd do a search on "acoustic treatments" or "sound dampener" here or elsewhere. Normally, these are for rooms/walls, but I think there are various options out there that might fit your need. It really depends on the size of your center vs. size of the cabinet's opening. There are probably some who would say that it's a little extreme? I don't know what options you are considering, but I will be experimenting myself with all the above 3 options (without the acoustic treatments) when I get my cabinet in 2-3 weeks. I am already leaning towards option 2. vant 01-19-08, 11:30 AM http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8397503&type=product&id=1179877252351 do you think this stand would work well for an lnt4071f? Go to page 68, post 2020. m. clayton 01-30-08, 07:05 PM I have most likely decided to go with an open steel & glass stand for my 5080, but I am wondering if anyone has experience with/ pix of a 50" TV sitting on a larger contemporary stand. Specifically I am considering the BDI Icon 9429 which is 62" in width paired with the 5080 which is a hair over 48". Basically all photos of the stand I have seen in catalogues or online show it matching up pretty evenly with the TV's, and I am wondering if having an additional 7" overhang on either side will look odd or unbalanced. I know they make an Icon that is 46", but conversely I'm not sure how I feel about having the display slightly overhanging the stand, plus I like the idea of being able to add more components to my system which the smaller stand would not allow. I've noticed that most folks here are looking at enclosed wooden cabinets. Interestingly, with enclosed stands I find the reverse to be true, i. e., I think it looks better when the stand is considerably wider than the TV (e.g: 77" Avion paired with a 50" TV). I think this may be due to the fact that enclosed stands read more as "furniture", and the scale of a large display panel sitting on a wooden cabinet of equal size can appear overwhelming. Well, enough of classical vs contemporary Flat Panel furniture theory... Any input regarding the aforementioned would be appreciated. dyamakawa 01-31-08, 06:31 PM I know this may be a little off topic, but what kind of couch is that? :p It's a sofa from Plummers called "Oregon Sofa". http://plummers.com/?page=shop/flypage&page_back=shop/category_items&offset=12&product_id=1125&category_id=a10b5d1d7c7745585411b442dc5aa934 Its a great sofa and was very inexpensive - got it on sale for less than $500. I actually bought the last boxed one at the Costco near me. This unit has exceptional quality for the price ($375). I can't believe the features it has for this price point: - metal mesh vented sliding shelves and bottom - removable magnetic finished wood backs with cable slots for access to equipment - glass/wood/mesh door options - integrated power strip in middle cabnet - Completely assembled I was really close to purchasing a unit that wasn't as nice and was over $700 plus delivery charges and 6 week lead-time. You saved me $300+ bucks! For those who are interested, here is some more information on this product: Manufacturer: Slam Brands Model: Savante Sehmore Costco Item#: 173582 Price: $375.00 Gross Weight: ~198lb. I've had my eye on this unit but everytime I go to Costco it's gone. :( Has anyone seen one lately? Last one I saw was two weeks ago and it was the beat to hell floor model they were trying to sell. Had to pass on it as it was in such poor condition. vivarey 02-06-08, 12:34 AM Just got my Westy TX-47 setup. I'm very happy with the TV and the stand. Great thread!! sushinut 02-06-08, 04:17 PM Someone asked this earlier in this thread but received no response. Does anyone have the Prepac BPS-4200 (http://www.racksandstands.com/Prepac-BPS-4200-PRP1166.html)/6000? It looks like a perfect solution for our setup. Currently we have two dinky ~24" L tv stands, one for our 42" 9uk and one for our A/V stuff. Then we have a seperate DVD tower that holds only ~30 DVDs. Our 1 yr old son loves to reach over the XT gate 'guarding' everything and remove DVDs from the tower :). http://common.csnstores.com/common/products/PRP/PRP1166_b.jpg http://common.csnstores.com/common/products/PRP/PRP1166_a.jpg Johnny Dunn 02-06-08, 10:54 PM Received my BDI 8429 yesterday. This thing is a work of art. VERY CLEAN Bjorn! You show how it SHOULD look in the end - I'm on step 7 of 10 I think, but I'll add some "in-progress" pix from my end showing some of the details that impressed me about this piece (along with a few things I just found out about). Sorry for the poor quality, styrofoam bits, and dust. Also if this isn't your style, there are some cool features that you might want to consider when looking for YOUR cabinet. The company is located in this area and a salesman told me that the designer is quite an audiophile. I've been told I'm gullible, but I gotta believe him considering some of the secrets this cabinet revealed upon inspection. 1. Delivery/assembly guys just left. The approx 1/8"-thick top smoked glass is removable - removing would reveal recessed wood top with 3 holes for cable mgmt in back. Knobs, glass top, and back panels were it for assembly. 2. Little dampeners/shock absorbers for the L & R cabinet doors. Quiet closing even if you use considerable force. Takes some energy to close the center/bottom door though - consistent force and it's heavy due to stiff dampening. See 3. 3. The hinges on the L & R cabinet doors in the far right of the pic are adjustable in 3 dimensions to fit door frames as needed - fit and leveling will be as close to perfect as you wish. Once they're closed, they're closed - no movement. 4. Back view with 1 of the panels removed - some cable management features. You can see 2 of the 3 holes I wrote about above. 5. Didn't want to risk lying this on its side to take pictures of the wheels/levels. In total - 6 wheels and 6 levels - all levels are adjustable without moving the cabinet. UPDATES after spending some time with this: a) This is in "natural stain cherry", the lighter cherry, as opposed to the "cocoa cherry". Pictures here are somewhat darker than in real life - my conditions were basement, cloudy day, blinds closed, with a flash. Bsader's pic above is a sunlit room. b) Made in China. I must say though, all wood fittings are absolutely smooth. You would not have been able to tell if you didn't know. c) Initial & temporary sag since I had all my levels in (up) to roll the cabinet against the wall with the t.v. (for cabling). Forgot to screw them back out. You will probably want to have the back 2 corners set before rolling to permanent position. In my case, that was fine since my t.v. is front heavy and I needed to only adjust front 2 corners and 2 interiors - these 4 you can adjust even if you have the cabinet against a back wall. I want to build a stand my self, but time is an issue. The wife would like this build yesterday and with our weather I cannot get it done until like April or may. In the design I would like to use glue and with out 7 degree weather, working in the garage, glue would have a hard time settling. So I think we are going to buy one, but then comes the problem, and the reason behind wanting to build one, we cannot find one that is exactly what we wanted. I have attached a rough drawing of one I planned to build, anyone out there know of a stand that is similar? Again we have the TV on the wall already, we want the stand for our components and for decorative stuff on top. It is the azura brooklyn. How has your stand held up so far with the support board and mount? Do you need to put a safty strap from the board to the wall in order to make sure the screen does not tip over? Sorry, just seeing this. I didn't have to use a safety strap and my 50 incher is still alive and well :) be sure to use toggle bolts for the mount. primetime6 02-10-08, 10:13 AM Also, another point, if I was to build my own I was going to use a hard wood, Oak, so I want something that will be sturdy, please keep that in mind. Anything (brands) you would stay away from? telamon 02-10-08, 07:45 PM I've been searching for a stand for my plasma and stumbled upon this one: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y258/jareds_mommy/Picture120.jpg It's the Whalen EPIXX (XLS52-8VS) (http://www.whalenfurniture.com/products/xls52-8vs.html). Found it while browsing a Canadian deal site (I live in the US.) Apparently Costco's in Canada sells it for $200 CAD. I had a local Costco lookup the Costco Canada SKU, but unfortunately the numbers don't match in the US inventory system. The Costco rep tried searching for it, but didn't find it. Does anyone know where I might purchase that Whalen EPIXX stand in the US? Costco in the US seems to carry another stand from the same line under a rebranded name for $200 USD: http://www.baysidefurnishings.com/shared/product-images/AVC55210VS.jpg That's the Bayside Alpha (AVC55210VS) (http://www.baysidefurnishings.com/products/entertainment/avc55210vs.html) aka Whalen Omega (AVC552-8VS) (http://www.whalenfurniture.com/products/avc552-8vs.html). I guess if I can't find the EPIXX for a reasonable price, I'll just go with the Bayside Alpha. Yog 02-12-08, 12:45 PM I am considering this exact combo would luv to see your setup not the stock pics, I am afraid that the 23.5 is too high for the 60 inch could you please post thanx Would love to see actual pics of the BDI Marina/60" Kuro combo as well as I'm about to buy the same. What is the finish like? Does it match the Kuro well? Thanks. I got it and looks fabulous. Perfect match. I will soon post pictures of my own setup. I am at work right now so please wait. My home theatre is work-in-progress as I started from scratch since I moved here. So just got the TV, BD player and TV stand. BTW, the stand totally matched my Kuro 150FD and BDP-95FD. I did 2 months research on TV stand (because I can't do wall mount for some reasons) and couldn't find any better than BDI Marina Black. Initially, I was thinking to buy Bello WAVS-330 (another black piece) but that's 26" height and that's too much. Another option was to go with BDI Avion Noir, Deploy Max, or Novia or anyother espresso or walnut stuff from Salamander but since Kuros are black so it looked great to me to put that panel on something black finish (just my though). But....no with this BDI Marina 73" width and 23" height, it doesn't hurt at all if you are viewing from your sofa or even on floor from 5-6 feet distance. I first bought BDI Avion Noir, then returned it as I wasn't satisfied. Then Scandia furniture here in Edmonton delivered BDI Deploy Max - returned it. Then the next one they delivered was BDI Novia Cocoa - it is really good stand but I figure that out that Kuro TVs will look great on the same black high-gloss finish. It doesn't look good on stock pictures but in real, nice stuff. So...BDI Marina black was the way to go for me. So highly recommended for someone who really needs to have a black quality stand with 50s classic style. But my wife is totally mad at me on why the heck I spent 8K on TV and 2.2K on stand :D, she wanted me to stick with Sony WEGA 29" CRT. :D jcard 02-12-08, 01:53 PM I'm looking for something to hold my 52" Sony LCD, something similar to the Tech Craft TRK50B (http://www.allamericandirect.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=TRK50B), but would like the mount to have adjustable height and would also like another shelf in there. But living in North-West Alberta Canada, i am not much worrying about my equipment heating up. We have winters temp between -45C to +20C throughout the year. I am more concerned about how to protect my panel from dust and other finger/hand prints. AstroLad 02-14-08, 01:44 PM Looked back through many pages, as well as the more popular sellers like bello and tvstands but wasn't able to find quite what I needed so I was wondering if any of you experts could point me in the right direction. I'm looking for a TV stand that has a fairly unique metallic/black/clear (doesn't have to be all three, just something minimalist-looking with interesting lines) look. Will have a 4280 on it, as well as PS3, Wii, 360, dvr box, pio txh receiver, and pureav power console. I want all the wires to be completely concealed. This seemed sort of interesting: http://www.theplasmacentre.com/images/sized/details/products_4907_pl152.gif But not quite right because of the lack of shelf space (and also Spectral is only available in the UK afaik). Any recommendations? Cost no object really, just looking for the perfect thing. Yog 02-14-08, 03:15 PM Astrolad, i really like this stand, and I have seen quite a few nice tv stands like this at efurno.ca and their parent company cymax.com. One thing you might want to check up on before you order. jcard 02-15-08, 01:49 PM Thanks, I was getting worried because I ordered from them on Wednesday and hadn't heard anything, though my credit card was charged. I called their Customer Service this morning and this afternoon and both times ended up in voicemail. I left a message and sent an email and now see that my order status on the site says "delayed ship date". So I called again (no answer), so I called Sales ... surprise surprise, that phone was answered. They said it is shipping Monday because the warehouse will have it in stock by then ... I said Monday's a holiday - they said "oh it'll still ship". Has pigeon holes for 4 components in the center, along with shelves behind the 2 (left and right) doors for storage and more components, if needed. I knew this before I bought the stand, so I bought some $2 shelf brackets from OSH (like home depot) and some mounting tape. Here is what we have after 3-4 hours. It took 1-1.5 hrs to assemble the stand, the instructions were just barely ok. None of the parts were labeled, which made it a little confusing at times. The stand itself is very nice. The paint seems to scratch easily, but that's expected for $239. My wife really likes the metal legs. We both really like how the higher height and wider stand makes our 42" panny 9uk look much much bigger :). Pardon the blurry photos... Finally, finally, finally! I found my HDTV furniture. I've been looking for a LCD/Plasma entertainment stand for MONTHS. For the WAF the unit had to be a solid piece of furniture. No glass, stands, or units with lots of open spaces and just shelves. I really wanted the Savante Sehmore unit from Costco as this seemed one of the few units to fit my needs while also being relatively inexpensive. As that has been sold out for weeks I was out of luck. So I spent the last few weekends hitting all of the local furniture stores. Nothing. Either the units were too small, had shelves that were too narrow, only had room for two components, etc. I am absolutely amazed at the fact that good furntiure stores like Havertys and Thomasville have piss poor selections on media center stands. Anyway, today we were at Rooms to Go looking for a new twin bed for our toddler. Low and behold but the minute we walk in I see a laminated sign showing the 8-10 HDTV center tables/stands they have available. Finally a store that has not only what I want, but has it immediately on display upon entry. I see a model that looks like what I want, I ask a salesperson to show me, and 15 mins later I have my order in hand. I would post a pic but I can't find any online. Once it is in home I'll post it. It is called the Chaplin 66" Retro Cherry Entertainment Console. Not only was the unit a great price, but I am flabbergasted that RTG was the only "chain" furniture or local furntire store with such a good selection and giving these units such prominence in store. Mind you, I used to hate RTG...but now I am liking them very, very much. Whiskyecho 02-17-08, 09:51 AM Finally. Finally, finally, finally! Like what I posted below (post 2231), you should have built to your own specs and in doing so saving yourself the grief/expense of driving all over town just to find something "adequate". I got exactly what I wanted and just figured my cost = $186.....bill AxelF 02-17-08, 09:52 AM Anyone here any good at finding your local manufacturers furniture in North Carolina via the Web? I like this Brookstone Bradley console, but if I could find something just like it at a discount warehouse furniture store in Hickory, NC or somewhere in NC, I would certainly like to save 40 % or so. http://www.brookstone.com/sl/product/5020-bradley-home-theater-console.html http://www.brookstone.com/bs_assets/images/shop/p2/578021_p2.jpg I saw one similar to this at Cabot Furniture (not online, but in store and around 670.00 vs. 1200.00) and at Crate & Barrel, but no luck finding them at some warehouse in NC. I may just ask my sister, she's the master at finding stuff that way, but hoping the group here is as well. Any links appreciated. The doors came with wood panels, which I replaced with glass. Cab was about $850. Spanbauer 02-17-08, 03:18 PM Here's an update on the Prepac BPS (http://www.racksandstands.com/Prepac-BPS-4200-PRP1166.html)-4200 that I ordered from rackandstands.com My center channel is ~22" wide and of course the center shelves on the prepac are 21". That's actually the stand I've had my eye on. A couple of questions if you don't mind: 1. What is the stand made out of? I'm afraid it may be particle board, which would be less than desireable. 2. Does the television feel too high to you? The stand is over 26" tall, and currently our television is sitting on a 21" stand, and the tv itself has a 4" base. Thanks! Still hoping to find some warehouse in NC selling Bradley and this console, and will update the forum if I find out. AxelF sushinut 02-18-08, 01:47 PM Hi sushinut. The stand is indeed particle board, but much higher quality than the usual Walmart type of particle board. Our old TV stand was also 21" high and my wife and I actually like the higher height of the Prepac. The wider stand and height increase makes our 42" plasma look bigger. Plus our 1 yr old son can't reach the plasma anymore now :). Here is a pic of our old tv stand and seperate av stand. http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c116/gnahc79/IMG_4903.jpg Jizzylax 02-18-08, 03:44 PM It's at BestBuy for $333, I just got one yesterday. Any chance you can get me the BOX dimensions? I'm picking one up tomorrow, and am wondering if it will fit in my car. I hope I don't have to take every piece out of the box in the parking lot. Thanks! :) Spanbauer 02-18-08, 04:40 PM The stand is indeed particle board, but much higher quality than the usual Walmart type of particle board. I think I'm going to get the same Prepac stand as you; it's the best design I can find for my needs. Now I just have to decide between the one for 42" televisions or the one for 60" televisions. I actually have a 46" screen, so it's a matter of whether I want the stand to be flush with the edges of the screen, or stick out 5 inches past the screen on each side. Can you describe it any? saginawjuggalo 02-20-08, 06:51 PM I've been searching for a stand for my plasma and stumbled upon this one: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y258/jareds_mommy/Picture120.jpg It's the Whalen EPIXX (XLS52-8VS) (http://www.whalenfurniture.com/products/xls52-8vs.html). Value City Furniture has them for close to $200... YRMV. black327 02-20-08, 09:52 PM I am looking for a credenza/entertainment unit similar to the BDI avion 8529 but the center channel speaker I'm considering is 26.5 inches wide. I'm having a hard time finding something that will accomodate this size. Does such a unit exist or should I just put the center speaker in front of the TV? If the plasma is on the wall, do you just have the speaker sitting on top of the entertainment unit all by itself? Any help would be appreciated. michanecash 02-21-08, 11:14 AM I am looking for a credenza/entertainment unit similar to the BDI avion 8529 but the center channel speaker I'm considering is 26.5 inches wide. Its got a enough room to hold your speaker. The interior dimensions of the 8529 top center drawer are 7"H x 35"W x 16"D. You can remove the drawer as well to reveal a completely finished area and shelf. Then you will have the dimensions 8.5"H x 37.5"W x 18"D. Racer47 02-21-08, 12:49 PM Does anyone put their a/v equipment ABOVE the tv? I want my sub under the tv, front speakers on either side of the tv and then put the center channel above the tv along with the receiver, dvr, dvd, cd and svhs equipment. That make 6 items above the tv so 2 shelves with 3 components each would do nicely. That puts all the equipment at a good height when standing in front of them, as opposed to everything being just above the floor. It looks like I will need to make my own setup but I was wondering if anyone else has already done this or has any suggestions. PapoHT 02-21-08, 01:34 PM wel, I was looking for the hardest time to find a stand to fit my B&W HTM1 center channel. And none of the stands that I looked at, had a center opening that is big enough to fit this 13.5" high speaker...... So next to just building a custom one, I decided to go with the Whalen-type from Sam's. It is the floater stand. This does the job, provided I do not get a bigger tv. If I do, it would have to go on the wall, and the speaker on a credenza. Right now it does not look that bad and suits my needs for now..... so this may be a solution for people with a big center like mine. Sorry for the pics.... camera phone is not so good.. LOL |
