Technik, glad that I could help out....I hope others were able to capitalize on this "sale" this weekend.:D
Does anyone know if the Mits Integrated HD tuner will work directly with the DTV HD programming signal with the cable card slot? I talked to DTV tonight and they did not know.
rc-zombies 08-16-04, 11:15 PM I have the Mits WS55805 still debating whether to get the 62525 series or not... anyways my CRT PRTV set has the glary screen similiar to the 525 series.... I mentioned earlier about getting the non-glare lexan from Tap Plastics instead of buying the Mits non-glare screen for hundreds of $$$$
Here's a before shot. Notice how sharp the reflections are.
rc-zombies 08-16-04, 11:20 PM With the non-glare Lexan from Tap Plastics 1/8" cost: $45.00+/- w/tax
still some reflection but not as harsh as before... the PQ whether in HD or SD still as good as before. The back side is smooth/shinney. With a sharp exacto and Lexan formulated paint. A black border can painted on the back to match the original.
IronHorse 08-17-04, 07:38 AM Zombie...
I had the same thought when I saw the Mitzi 525 this past weekend... that if it was too offensive, an alternate might be to use photographic non-glare glass or plastic that they use in custom framing shops. You definitely beat me to it, but of course, I'm still on the fence with regard to which set to buy anyway.
Honestly... it's probably Mitzi, LG, then Sammy. The one bummer about the Mitzi is the price... so far it's still up in the four thou area locally. The screen glare could be a major negative marketing and consumer gripe point for the brand, and if you ask me, Mitsubishi should offer a free non-glare replacement considering that the 725 is supposed to have it. As far as I'm concerned, it's poor design work and just like fixing a noisy fan, they should fix a glaring screen. The fact that the two screens are probably interchangeable only underscores the ease of the retrofit.
I also have a question for any 525 owner that has comcast. Does this set need a cable tuner out of the box or can you simply connect and watch whatever comcast has other than PPV/encrypted stuff? I've heard of guys buying that 16:9 Sanyo CRT set and plugging it in and BAM! They have HD without a STB from Comcast.
technik 08-17-04, 08:00 AM Well, my 62 got delivered yesterday, and I've been playing ever since. First thing was when I hooked up comcast cable directly to ANT1, I got NBC 4 (DC) in HD. WOW!!!! The scan also found some digital channel in the 60 - 80 channel range, but there is no picture. Dont know about that one. Almost got Netcommand working the way I want, that was probably the most difficult part.
Only thing so far is, when I powered it up this morn, it asked if I had changed lthe lamp, anybody else seen this happen after a graceful shutdown???
I also saw a green line last night, but was able to fix that with the picture perfect control, and lowering green.
I will be getting my pc monitor cable today, so am curious about this tilt and the supposed fix.

I think sound proofing material or even some kind of foam a foot or so behind the fan would help with the fan noise. I have yet to try this, but I think it will help noticeably. The original fan problem is unrelated to the fan that is on when the set is on... it was related to the fan that always is running when the TV is plugged in.
Terp: Given your set-up maybe instead of foam you should try something that will divert the airflow from the fan so that instead of hitting the wall it will flow more smoothly around the TV set or something like that? I'm thinking that the air hitting the foam will probably still make noise and you wouldn't want to reduce the airflow by putting the foam over the opening of the fan. Just a thought.
UMD_Terp 08-17-04, 08:11 AM If you unplug the TV or hit the reset, it will ask you whether you changed the bulb or not. It should not do that on power ups usually... only if it was even unplugged.
technik 08-17-04, 09:22 AM Terp...
Thats what I thought.....TV is hooked up to UPS and surge, and UPS shows NO power failure last night. Will see if it happens again. Anybody else seen this yet??
UMD_Terp 08-17-04, 09:44 AM what kind of UPS do you have hooked up to it? I just bought a APC Smart-Ups 700 refurbished for $130 shipped with 2 yr warranty
http://powersupersite.com/store/viewitemdetails.cfm?idProduct=433
should be here today. It puts out a sinusoidal output unlike other UPS... I originally bought a new UPS but it put out a 'simulated' sinusoid. Now if the power supply in the TV rectifies and filters whatever comes in to it to some DC level, then it doesn't matter what kind of input you feed it. But if the TV uses anything AC, you want to feed it an undistorted sinusoid. Not knowing what the power supply in the TV does, I didn't want to take a chance... I returned that UPS and got this refurbished one instead...
rc-zombies,
Can you post a link to the material you used? I did some digging at tapplastics.com but I couldn't find the material you described.
spiff72 08-17-04, 10:48 AM Hello all - long time reader, first time poster here!I posted this in the main forum, but I thought I would try here too since this might be a better place for it...
I just picked up the WD-62525 from BB locally, and so far I love it (it even found digital HD channels on my el-cheapo analog cable system - Charter basic cable) !
But I have a question...
What exactly is this reset problem that people refer to? I have seen that there is a firmware fix for it, but I have yet to find a description of the issue on this forum. I just picked it up on Sunday, and when I came home from work Monday and turned it on, it just came up with a strange flickering white display, and a vertical black bar (about 4" wide) on the right side. It almost looked like the entire "picture" (or lack thereof) was shifted to the left by about 4". It wouldn't respond to the remote (actually the power button would turn off and on the green light on the front, but the display stayed on). I had to reset it, and it went back to normal. It was turned off for about 18 hrs when this happened. Is this indicative of the "reset problem"? I will see if it does it again in the next couple of days...
I also have a question about the functionality of NetCommand, but I will do that in a different post.
Thanks in advance,
Spiff72
Last night when I went to ANT-1 for my OTA channels, I got static or like nothing was connected. I checked device and searched channels and I could not pick up any analog or digital channels on ANT-1. Perhaps it was a bad cable or a bad ANT-1 connection. I tried connecting to ANT-2 and I got the same result. I checked my coax and connected it to my Dish 6000 receiver that has an OTA ATSC tuner, and I was able to get all of my local analog and digital channels, thus I know its not my cable or its connectors. I perfromed a reset and I still got the same result. The only thing I didn't do was unplug the set. Is it possible I'm missing something in my setup?
dserban 08-17-04, 10:56 AM The exact same thing happened to me. Everything works fine through the Cable Box and through Tivo, but the direct feed does not work. Seems to that it has to do with the tuner.
dserban,
What did you finally do? Did you call Mits? Please don't tell me you are living with this problem.
Just bought wd62725 from Soundtrack (UE). It is obviously not in yet - expecting end-of-September delivery. Will keep everyone posted on the "expected" date.
Iwii,
I bought mine from UE as well. Apparently, they can't keep these sets in stock. I saw it on Friday 8/6 at lunch and salesman said 3 had just been unloaded off the truck. I went back afterwork to finalize my decision and make the purchase and he said 2 were just sold and I would get the third. The salesman was nice enough to load it into his own personal pickup truck and deliver it to my house at 10:30PM. He said this way, no other sales person could sell it to someone else if they saw it in the back.

Did you buy the 62525 or 62725? I know UE has been slowly getting the 62525s in, but the 62725s are still several weeks out.

I just tried again, this time going straight from the wall to the TV and it works. I even get 2 HD channels (CBS and ABC).
dserban,
I never daisy chained my connections. I'll try again to see what happens, I'm just wondering if this is some sort of NetCommand default status.
Iwii,
I have the 62525.

the Back-UPS ups has a simulated sine wave output... For computers and other devices that have DC switchers for their power supplies, it is no issue at all...
Aren't all UPSs some sort of stepped sine wave? I think all you really care about in this application is to prevent the RPTV from rebooting or improperly shutting off due to power loss. Given the load of the Mits, about 275 Watts, a 500 KVA UPS of any kind should be sufficient as long as it can support the load for at least 10 minutes to let the bulb cooling fan operate.
UMD_Terp 08-17-04, 01:27 PM Not all are stepped sine wave... you are most likely correct that you don't have to have a true sine wave UPS... I just found a good deal on one that did have that... that's all. If the input AC is sent to a rectifier and a DC switcher in the TV power supply, then it really doesn't matter at all.
sirfergy 08-17-04, 02:05 PM How's the viewing angle on this TV?

You can probably put the WD-62x25 on a 30" high stand and it will be fine at a distance of 10 feet.
dwarren2 08-17-04, 04:39 PM Went to a local independent store today to look at the Mitsu. I can get the 52725 for $3899 thru Thursday. This is $150 more than the 52525. Is this a good price and is the 725 worth the price difference?

SFBliss 08-17-04, 04:54 PM I got my 52525 over the weekend, and the PQ is great. What I didn't expect was the large number of HD channels available by default with Comcast in SF, I thought at minimum I'd need a cableCard.
I've run into two issues:
- one morning, the set wouldn't power on, had to hit reset. Mitsubishi will be sending me new firmware on the assumption that this is the infamous reset issue
- I'm having problems getting the Coaxial Digital-Out to work. I was watching the HD version of the Olympics, and the info button claimed Surround English for the audio. When I first tried this, I had gorgeous surround through my AVR for ten minutes or so, then I switched channels, and ever since, it hasn't worked for me: standard sound is fine, but no signal through the coax. Curious is anyone else is seeing this.

dwarren2,
Where did you see the 725?
The 725 has an anti-glare screen and on-screen program guide that the 525 does not. Anti-glare screen is important if you cannot completely control the lighting in your room.
How soon can you you take delivery? Does it need to be special ordered?

I did not see the 725. They said they expected them any day and were taking orders. Under the current sale they had on, they would give me the same disconnect off of list for the 725 that they were applying to the 525

Yes I have the same problem. The guy from Mits. says that the new firmware will correct the problem. We will see.

That sounds a little like my experience. Have you ever plugged in a CableCARD to this set? I noticed this strangeness (inability to tune any OTA digital channels) when I first plugged my CC in, not realizing that I had to reset the TV to make it recognize and initialize the CC. Since that reset, OTA DTV has worked like a champ. I also added an FM trap ($5 at RS) to the coax coming from the antenna. I think this helped some as well. I think the ATSC tuner in the Mits is either too sensitive to noise or not sensitive enough to signal strength. Yiou can find some really good threads about tuning ATSC signals over in the HDTV forums. Suffice it to say that the main things to try are amplification to address low signal problems (does NOT work well for tuning digital stations), adding a bandpass filter (FM trap) for just passing television signals, and adding an attenuator to address too much signal problems. All of these things could be preventing you from tuning these stations in. It is awful weird that you don't even get any analog stations, though. I wouldn't expect that.
I just got home and had to reset my 62625 for the second day in a row. So, thanks to this thread I called Mits and after 2 different numbers...starting with the service number on the back of the manual...I was given the number to "senior" technical advisers...whatever the hell that means. Anyone who has the Mits should write this number down on the back of their manual for any service calls.....949-830-8364. There was no wait time for a technician. Also, the technician was very knowledgeable and nice. I am awaiting the fax so that I can get the firmware upgrade.
Here are some interesting tidbits I was able to acquire:
1. The glare shield on the 525 series is not exactly the same size as the 725 series. He says that if you put the 725 series onto the 525, it may vibrate off potentially causing damage. Not sure if I buy this one.
2. You can clean the 525 shield with normal window cleaner. HOWEVER, if you take it off....DO NOT CLEAN THE UNDER-SCREEN WITH WINDOW-CLEANER. Only use cleaner intended for big screen cleaning.
3. The cable card reader should work with DTV as long as their system will recognize the numbers. However, the CC is not the same shape as the DTV card....I talked to DTV last night about the CC issue, and the Mits set was not on their list of tuners that are compatible with the DTV signal......So, not sure if DTV has any CC...will have to call them.
4. The 725 series has been shipped. Retailers should be displaying them soon...no exact time frame given.
5. The 825 series is due out next month. Again, no exact date given.
6. The 725 series and 825 series will display the HDTV 720i signal as 900i (not sure of the number here) or can display the 900i feeds. I am not familiar with or understand this one...as you all can tell. More info from others may be helpful here.
7. I mentioned the delayed response to channel changes. He was not aware of it. I asked him to log my complaint so that it may be addressed. He said if enough people complain, then the firmware can be modified. I also told him that the tuner is capable of changing channels faster because while in PIP mode, I can change the smaller picture very quickly...that is channel surf without delay. So it has to be a software/firmware issue. So everyone call and complain so that this issue can be fixed.
Questions:
will the 825 series have an output for a sub woofer?
Can the built in speakers be used as part of a 5.1 surround?
does it come with "Real" surround sound with connections for rear speakers?
rtmoore4 08-17-04, 09:47 PM For those who have successfully gotten their CableCARD to work on the Mitsubishi WD-xx525 sets, is anyone using it with Motorolla equipment? The latest story I am hearing from TWC is that Motorolla CableCARDs are not compatible with Mitsubishi televisions. Needless to say, I find this extremely hard to believe as CableCARD is a standard and Mitsubishi is currently one of the largest providers of CC-enabled sets. Anyway, I'm working with both TWC and Mitsubishi to try and confirm this. If anyone can help me out with anecdotal evidence that Motorolla CCs work with their Mitsu set, that would be pretty valuable.
I am cross-posting this to a thread on CableCARDs over in the HDTV Hardware forum. If you are in the same boat as me and don't see an answer in this thread, check here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=4215326#post4215326
Well, I finally got a call back from Midcontinent cable regarding my Cablecard install. They were polite and honest about the fact that this was a new thing for them and they gave me an appointment for this coming Friday for the install.
Now I read that I should pray for a SA card over a motorola... sigh.
I will let you know in the CC issue this weekend.
- -
So far, I have had one reset required in 3 weeks. If the CC install goes good, I will order the firmware upgrade.
rtmoore4,
I have a fairly strong signal with my high gain antenna. This evening I unplugged the set and plugged it back in and I got all channels on ANT-1. I selected the prefer digital box in the antenna setup and interestingly enough, it didn't pick up the analog CBS station (VHF CH.9) in my area. This is probably the strongest analog broadcast in the area - perhaps the Mits ATSC tuner through it out because it was too strong of a signal.
We'll see how it goes in the next few weeks as I have until 06 SEP 04 to take the set back. I'll see what happens when Mits sends me the FW update.

Thats them... will let you know how it goes.
I had a SA CableCARD installed in my 52525 on Monday. Four TWC guys were over to observe as it was the first for this area. The process went relatively smoothly and after a couple of 'hits' from their IT department most of the channels came through ok. HD channels are stupendous and sd channels are very good too. There are varying degrees of pixellation on some channels, esp. those that require decoding by the Mits. They tested the signal strength and found it at the weak end of acceptable (i think). However, those channels that were pixellating on the Mits came in perfect on their STB and tv they brought with them. One guy thought the Mits tuner might have trouble with a weak signal and from my observations I concur. I might call Mits to see if there is an issue with the QAM tuner. Unfortunately the techs couldn't promise a signal improvement for me, but would look into it.
I *am* happy to report that the green halos I complained about in another thread had all but disappeared after the upgrade to digital service. I see it a bit on some of the basic cable channels, but not at all in the premium and HD channels. It is no longer an issue for me. :)
Oh yeah, I finally see the rainbows....but am not bothered by them.
And thanks abms, I will call them about the channel change delay problem. It is a big nuisance, but seems to be (hopefully) an easy fix.
RyeMan1 08-18-04, 02:25 AM I've been reading this thread since the first post, but I can't seem to find an answer for this: Has anyone foud a fix for the tilt issue. When viewing widescreen DVD's or the computer it is very noticable. I'm sure this is fixable in the service menu but I don't know how to get into it, all the codes I have do not work for this set.
This is the first anyone has made mention of a service menu for this set. Does anyone have an idea on how to access it, or if it even exists? Seems we need to get our hands on a service manual.
dwarren2 08-18-04, 08:27 AM Not sure if it was this thread or another on the Mitsu, but someone mentioned that there was a panel that needed to be removed on the front and that there were 2 set screws to adjust the tilt.

dwarren2 08-18-04, 08:47 AM Found this doing a search on this thread
4, Found the Tilt adjustment point. They are under the cover plate labeled
"WARNING Risk of eye injury No user servicable part inside. Do not remove this cover. etc". Remove four screws, marked with Arrows in the plastic. Underneath are two Hex head screws that adjust the Geometry of the screen. The right most screw adjusts what I would consider the top and bottom tilt. Note these screws have a seal on them, and I have not touched them yet. Waiting for my 30 day exchange period to end first(8/24), just in case anything goes wrong.
videobruce 08-18-04, 09:01 AM After all this time I finally saw this model, stuffed in the corner in the local Best Buy store.
I don't understand why all of you that have complained about this protected 'glare' screen have made such a big deal about it, as it was something new to RPTV's. This way they (Mits) gets to tack on $400 more for the anti-glare screen and the TV Guide feature which probably cost them (Mits) between $50 and $75 at the manufacturing level. IOW's a bigger GPM (Gross Profit Monster).
I hate to tell you that many of the RPTV's from the last 10+ years have had this screen on. They don't look any better on those then it does here mind you, but never the less it isn't anything new. As I also don't understand why anyone would try to watch TV in a brightly lit room especially with many windows (where you can't close the drapes or blinds) where reflections would be such a problem in the first place!
BUT, as far as the picture quality goes, I compared it to (or tried to) the Capt. Kirk which was 70' away and the Kirk version seemed better (slightly 'sharper'), BUT since they weren't next to each other it was reallt impossibel to do a real test. This was watching that Best Buy loop.
I do have to admit I got a kick out of the color bar in that one menu (forgot what they called it). It was a real nice professional touch that sets Mits above the rest!

rsg - I had a somewhat similar experience to yours a couple of weeks ago which I posted about. When I first got the 525, I was using OTA only. I was playing around with antenna menu and channel memorization. I unchecked "Prefer Digital" and re-memorized to see what would happen. From the manual, my expectation was that I would see everything - digital and analog. What happened was that all the digitals disappeared and the analog channels remained (different from what you described with no analog). I then had to reset, rememorized with "Prefer Digital" and the digitals came back. According to the manual, if you have both analog and digital versions of the channel and you select "Prefer Digital", only digital channels will be memorized so that is consistent with your description of CBS (9) above. I realize this does not match directly with your description of the problem but it is close and thought there might be something you could take away from my experience.
On a different note, I received my Tivo HD (thanks Circuit City online) a couple of days ago and its made my whole 525 experience that much better. Great to have all my satellite and analog channels all integrated in one friendly Tivo interface not to mention HD time-shifting.
technik 08-18-04, 12:08 PM Just got an email back from MDEA Service [mdeaservice@mdea.com] concerning info on the compatability between the 525, 725, and 825 shields...here's the response
"The shields from the 725/825 will not fit this television. The diamond shield can be removed if the room is well lit."
oh well....
videobruce 08-18-04, 01:03 PM If you removed that shield, what covers up the area behind the bezel?
MadsenD 08-18-04, 01:04 PM Here's something else to ask though. I was talking about the protective screen with the salesman when I bought my 52525 and he mentioned that Mitsu was making a "Frame Only" screen that will replace the full screen with just a black frame to give the TV a finished look with the full protection screen removed. Not sure if that's true or not, but may be worth finding out.
Another thing to remember, the screen underneath the protection screen is the SAME as the screens on the the other RPTV's without protective screens. So if you're choosing one of the others over the Mits because you can't take the screen off due to it being "fragile", it will be no more fragile than any of the others.
videobruce 08-18-04, 01:08 PM I'm sure they (Mits) knows by now that this screen is very unpopular!
technik 08-18-04, 02:35 PM I failed to mention in my post about Mits stating that the shields were uncompatible, was that I have the 62525 in a room that does have a bit of light during the day. I must say that the glare is not as bad as the reflection that I got on my 36" WEGA Sony CRT, and is not a prob IMO.... although no glare would be nice...

rsg_1, That is exactly what is supposed to happen. When you click 'Prefer digital' and the TV finds a digital channel that is the same as an analog channel, it puts the digital channel in the place of the analog channel, and you can no longer tune the analog channel in at all.
sbtv, After you scanned without the 'Prefer Digital' checkbox, I would bet that if you scrolled down far enough, you would have found the digital channels. I had the same experience as you until I finally figured out that it puts all the analog channels first, and then starts listing the digital ones.
Oh yeah, congrats on the HDTiVo. I'm jealous.
UMD_Terp 08-18-04, 03:35 PM I have the exact same problem as sbtv... I scanned with "prefer digital' off and all the digital channels disappeared. I tried rescanning with the box checked, and the digital channels still didn't appear.... in fact, I can see the scanning adding them, but they are inaccessible. I called Mits and they said to try the firmware upgrade to see if it fixes it but they were not sure. I just got the fax for the license agreement and am about to send it back... if someone else could call Mits about that problem, maybe it would make them aware of it... a reset allowed me to get the digital channels back
Auditor55 08-18-04, 03:56 PM Have anyone come up with any tweaks to eliminate or reduce black crush?
I'm losing black detail on some programs. Black crush seems to be major flaw of microdisplays.

Auditor55, I have had the same experience on a couple of programs. For example, the PGA tournament this past weekend. Several times, the detail in a player's face and neck was completely lost due to the artifical shade of their hats. I do not think, however, this is truly a problem with the microdisplay technology. I think it is a problem with the source. When the cameras would zoom in on a player so that the chip (in the camera) had less of the high intensity background to deal with, the auto-iris on the camera would shift dramatically, and all the detail came back.
In addition, I have never seen this "black crush" on a DVD movie, even in scenes containing both high brightness and dark segments, so this adds weight to my feeling that the display is not at fault.

My sentiments exactly! I'd venture that 80% of the various image issues that people have with HDTV's come down to this...even rainbows. That's been my experience so far.
I also thought of a possible suggestion for those who have a problem with the protective screen. You could have the center cut out leaving you with just the black frame to then re-attach to the tv so it looks "finished".

Too funny. Then people can complain about reflections on the border. :)
Call me crazy, but I don't think the set looks "unfinished" without the protective screen. Check out my earlier pics with the screen removed and see if you don't agree. I wish I could post higher resolution images so you could really zoom in and look at it up close. It really isn't all that bad.

I'm going to put in Platoon, the jungle scene and Alien, to very dark movies and see how the DLP handles those.

The verdict?
I just watched The Matrix and it looked beautiful, even though I don't have ffdshow working on my HTPC yet. I did discover that you definitely shouldn't watch really dark movies like this with any lights on in the room, though, even if you have removed the glare screen. Any incidental light reflecting off of the walls and hitting the screen does affect your contrast ratio. The blacks aren't quite as black and you lose some dynamic range. Once the lights go out, though, it's very nice.
I haven't played a DVD over this set yet so I'm very curious how this turns out. I do have the Samsung HD941 on pre-order with TVA. If it has a black crush problem like previous Samsungs, it may not be such a good match for this set.

A Best Buy in my area took the screen off. I was surprised to find the the screen was just as durable as any of the other DLPs. It didn't look finished to me but it wasn't too bad. It was basically flat black around the border but at each corner there was a gap (if that makes sense). I couldn't tell if contrast suffered w/o the screen as the area it was right at the edge of the RPTV area and had light shining on the screen so I couldn't give it a fair comparison to other DLPs to see how it differed. The BB employee however told me he took the screen off said that it was real easy to do as he took it off with his Kroger Plus card (that's what I was told anyway).
I need a little NetCommand help. Maybe I'm not fully understanding its use or am handicapped by non-standard components (AVR and DVD player). If I understand correctly, there are 3 ways NetCommand can be set up in sort of declining usefulness:
1. Set it up with the components that are preloaded. If you happen to have the components they have standardized, this is the best scenario. Because I don't have these, I don't know how should NetCommand should behave and don't know what I am missing out on. Once you have NC set up this way and select a device, say a DVD player, will it automatically power on the DVD player and switch the video and audio inputs appropriately?
2. Have NC learn your components. This seems to help with recognizing the components but so far I haven't been able to get the video / audio switching to take place automatically. Seems like learning the AVR is the key here. Also, I think you have to use the IR emitters in this scenario, right?
3. Use the manufacturing codes listed in the Appendix of the manual. With this method, then you have to use the "component switcher" at the top of the remote. Not all that convenient.
Any help or insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have Netcommand set up on my TV and I like the way it works but I haven't spent the time to get it all working as I would like it to. I would use your method #2. It is real easy to get NC to learn all your components IR commands, just point & shoot.
You will have to set up the IR emitters. Find the IR detector for the device to be controlled and place an emitter near that detector.

Seriously, is there anyone you can complain to about these idiots. They have the worst customer serivce, are always late, and still have the gall to increase rates by over 15% year over year... unbelievable...
Does anybody have a reliable source telling you when the 52725's are going to hit the street? I pre-ordered one in San Diego and I'm trying to synch Adelphia coming out with the CableCard with the TV, etc.
I am ready to watch some HD...
UMD_Terp,
Time to switch to satellite. Cable is terrible. In our area Cox Communications is the racket in town and the only digital channels are the upper end ones you pay more for. All the rest are analog bypass. You might want to look into DirecTV or Voom. Or Dish Network if you want international programs.
UMD_Terp 08-20-04, 01:16 AM If I could get DSL for high speed internet, I would cut off comcast at once. Comcast high speed internet is close to $60 without any cable service. They price their plans so that you pretty much have to get everything for it to be cost-effective. Internet + Digital Cable comes to $100 a month and that is no HD channels and no premium channels. Our cable here is the same way as yours... lower channels are analog bypass and the upper are digital. At least my bill will go down $3 a month if they ever take this POS cable box from me and give me the cablecard
roostacaster 08-20-04, 03:06 AM OK, so I have seen and had lots of time to compare the hlp-5085, hlp-5063, the mits 525 and the JVC d'ila. After calibrating them each with the same dvd player all on video essentials, I noticed some major differences.
First off, the JVC gets CREAMED when it comes to black level. By comparison to the other models, it is virtually non existent. I could never shake off the feeling that there was not a good setting on the colors of the JVC that wasn't too dull or just plain over-saturated.
HD-signal: 3 out of 5
Analog: 3.5 out of 5
DVD: 3.5 out of 5
The Mits
It has one major flaw: the screen. All I can say is kill me now. Why, oh why, put on a glossy screen? To make customers pay extra bucks for the matte screen? Who knows...I will say that the color on the mits looks very nice, and overall the set has very good detail. The contrast control is somewhat to be desired though...There was, like the JVC with color, no happy medium on this control. The set would either look nasty with too much contrast and lots of artifacts, or way too dark. It seems there is a very narrow threshold of adjustment for contrast. The perfect color settings are a little tough. Are there filters you can buy to adjust these better? Video essentials only comes with a blue filter, so you cant really adjust the other colors(cyan, magenta, yellow, etc) very well. The black level was pretty good, and I would say that overall the set was pretty good.
HD Signal: 4 out of 5
Analog: 4 out of 5
DVD 3.5 out of 5
Sammy 5063
Good color, Good black level, Bad Idea not giving a user controlled tint setting. Whats up with that? It does give you settings for color weakness which pitches the whole screen either red blue or green, but it seemed to oversaturate everything.
Hd Signal: 4.5 out of 5
Analog 3.5 out of 5
DVD 4 out of 5
Sammy 5085, or better known as Capt. Kirk
Awesome color, Awesome detail, Bad idea not giving an option to have a removable base. Whats up with that? Overall I think this TV has FEW weaknesses. The blacks are black and detailed, the contrast is great, the colors are awesome. The only performance issue I can really think of is the failure to reproduce accurate flesh tones. It always seems to be either too red or too green. Or it could be just an issue with the user...who knows?
Hd Signal: 5 out of 5, maybe more
Analog signal: 4 out of 5
DVD: 4.5 out of 5
Overall rating I would say that:
3rd place goes to the JVC. For a tv that is supposed to be the "savior" of LCD and lcos technology and the victor over DLP it sure gets creamed by the Sammy and the mits pretty hard.
2nd place in a two way tie is the mits 525 and the Sammy 5063. Both have strengths, both have weaknesses, choose for yourselves on this one.
1st place, is captain kirk, the Sammy 5085. What a picture. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend checking it out. The picture is immaculate.
If anyone knows more about how to correctly adjust perfect color, I would REALLY like to know. I will have lots more time to tinker with these sets side by side by side, and I want to get the playing field as level as possible. If only Samsung made the 5085 with a detachable base...

UMD_Terp, DirecTV is $40/mo for their digital pkg w local channels. This plus the $60 for internet and you'd have better picture quality and hi-speed internet for the same $100. However... if you have more than one room each additional reciever costs another $5/mo.
Alan
chaslum 08-20-04, 09:14 AM As cool looking as the Capt. Kirk is, it's design requires a whole wall of space to display and the screen only comes in one small size (right?)...
And JVC? Yuck. Who would trust a JVC over a Mitsubishi and a Samsung?

UMD_Terp: I second that. I ditched cable in the DC area ages ago and I'm saving a lot of money. I have the DirecTV package BigAl notes above and have DSL from Verizon for about $30/mo (bundled with their local and unlimited long distance package). More importantly, I'm much happier. The few times I've had to call DirecTV they've been excellent. Can do lots online too.
About complaining, there's actually a move in Montgomery Co. MD to make the cable companies accountable and I think they have a number you can call to complain about service and such.
Sorry for getting off the topic of the thread a bit...

videobruce 08-20-04, 09:28 AM Why, oh why, put on a glossy screen? To make customers pay extra bucks for the matte screen? Yes! Welcome to retail and the 'Retail Scam'!
the JVC gets CREAMED when it comes to black levelI have only seen one of these and I assumed that it was a 'bad' unit. You sound as you just described what I saw also. In less than 3 seconds, the first thing I noticed about the 61" JVC was the black level was more a 'gray' level! I just figured it wasn't set correctly from the factory as I had to reduce the brightness down to -25 (on a scale of -30 to +30). A fast look at 10+ pother sets on the floor told me the black level was way too high. It was 'OK' after I tweaked it, but I can't believe it was THAT far off, nor can I believe they all look like that!
UMD_Terp 08-20-04, 09:32 AM yeah, if comcast can come out today on time and get things to work, or at least show they are trying... then I'll stay... but if they mess it up again, I would seriously consider ditching them...
chaslum 08-20-04, 09:34 AM Comcast really does blow.
However I am a 1st floor apt with a big hill behind me so Direct TV is not an option. Also I do a lot of online gaming and I prefer the Cable connection to DSL. Although I think there is an issue with X-box being able to recieve the "packets" from Comcast so I often experince lag. Verizon DSL might actually be better... any body had any experince with both?
Recently however Comcast just began offering the HD-DVR box which for $10 a month beats the Tivo HD-R box. I would have to own a Tivo box for 16 years to equalize the monthly costs of my Comcast box.
Its funny, these forums have taught me so much, I know more than the cable guys that come to my house (which doesn't say much really when it comes to Crapcast).

You can also get lag from the cable modems because as I understand it then are set up around nodes that you share with your neighbors. You get lots of lag during peak times.
I only recently started playing my PS2 online so this isn't a complete comparison, but back when I had a cable modem everything slowed down noticeably during peak hours (like after dinner). Have had absolutely no problems with DSL and find that the speeds are fine for everything I do (including some video on demand and VOIP). YMMV

Does anyone have a picture of the side of a 62" I am trying to spec some cabinets and need to know how high I can make the base cabinet under the TV. The problem is that the ceiling slopes at a 45 degree angle starting about 53". The cabinets are 24" deep, so the ceiling height at the front of the TV is 77". I want to make the base about 21-24" high to support some drawers and component locations, but am worried about the TV hitting the ceiling. I am not too concerned about a 21" high base, but would like to get a few more inches for the cabinet.
I probably could get by with the overall height (43.7" according to site) and the depth of the top.
If someone has a 62 that would be willing to help me out, I would really appreciate it. A picture directly from the side (from a distance) would be great. I can scale it based on the known? height. I would settle for just the dimension of the top:)
Also, does anyone know of a reason why the 725 series would have different external dimensions?

Two sizes -- 50" and 56".
rootcaster,
Thanks for the detailed analysis. Its very very appreciated. It appears Samsung is the leader in DLP sets. We'll have to wait for the new Tantus lineup which is suppose to be similar to the current Cpt. Kirk's. When the set is a tie, in the case of the Mits and Sammy, there are a few things that help in picking out one set over the other. Price and additional features.
By the way, did you do your analysis of the Mits with the glare screen on or off?
Its almost tempting to send my set back and wait 6 months for the table top HD2+ Tantus with the integrated ATSC tuner.

I just spoke with Mark Scott, a PR man for Mit. He told me the WD-52525 uses the HD2+ chip. He was concerned that web sites were questioning which chip. I told him I had spoken with the Mit. Customer Service folks. They are telling people Mit uses a .85 inch proprietary chip. They are not telling people HD2, HD3, etc. Mark said he appreciated me letting him know and said it was OK to use his name in this post. If you'd like to confirm this info. Mark's address is below.

As I just ordered a WD-52525 yesterday, I was concerned about this issue. I want an HD2+ and have been waiting for it. From everything I've read, the Mits were suppose to have the HD2+. So... before the set even got delivered, I wanted to make sure of what I was purchasing.

jdarwin 08-20-04, 12:41 PM I looked at the Kirk. I think it does look better than the WD-52525. But as is everything in life, one must compromise. I wanted the built in features of the Mit. the Kirk doesn't have. So I'm willing to give up "some" PQ for the features. That's the problem with being on the bleeding edge. If I'd wait a year or two I could probably get the Kirk with all the Mit. features from some OEM for half the price.

I'm not sure if you can get it in your location but I know that RCN does serve the DC area. I switched from Comcast to them exactly when XBL was launched & have never looked back since.
They were the first to set up an all fiber optic network here and I regularly get speeds of 750/4000 through my cable modem. It's a full package, internet, tv, phone...the only thing I wish they had was NHL Center Ice but you can't have everything now can you. ;)
Also, I know that certain modems are better for gaming online as well. Toshiba PCX2200 & PCX2600 seem to be tops when gaming on Xbox is concerned. You might want to see if you can get one of those from your cable company.

I've spent quite a bit of time comparing it to the Kirk model, and via component, they seemed almost identical in PQ to my eyes. The extra size and input options have swayed my decision to Mitsubishi as well.
For what it's worth, I also preferred the 52525 PQ over the JVC DILA and the new Toshiba and Panny DLP's.

It's too bad DVI/HDMI source material isn't available in showrooms very often. I think all the 720p micro chip RPTV displays would look better if they didn't have to go through analog component inputs.
Just spent 4 hours watching my local Cable TV company (Midcontinent) try to install my Cablecard. It ended with failure and the left me with a STB to provide HD till they can work out the problems they are having.
I was the 2nd customer to have ordered a cablecard and the same installer who attempted mine did the first yesterday. He didn't tell me what brand he did yesterday but it was not a Mits. He did say it took him a few hours because they were also having set up issues.
The first 45 minutes this morning were spent on getting the card installed...facing the right way... sigh. Guess what, it wont work if you put it in backwards. I pointed out the little "face this way" emblem on the manual and inpressed into the back of the TV so I am sure he will get it right next time.
Next was a series of resets in order to bring up the Cablecard numbers and menu. You have to install the card, then reset the TV and then it will come up with the numbers. On my TV, once you viewed the numbers we could not get that display back up. The manual says to hit the TVMenu button on the remote followed by 999 but that never worked. He had to remove the card, reset the tv, let it boot up, power it down, install the card, power back up then we could see the menu.
Once the Cablecard was installed, we lost the ability to run "channel search" on input 1. Input 2 (OTA) would still do a search but we could not get that option to come up again on Input 1.
He spent around 2 hours on the phone with different people back at IT dept sending hits and trying differing things. They said they could see the card.
Our Cable card menu on the TV could only be accessed after a removal/reset/reboot... once. If we left the CC menu and opened it again, we could not get anything to come up. If we did that and were in the CC menu, we saw the numbers and the word "Hunt" in blue letters. You can't select any options and once you close the menu, you cant return. The person he was talking too at IT had a Mits in his office and he was able to get into the CC menu while we were stuck.
At this time, they don't know if it is the CableCard or the TV. A call to Mits got them nowhere. They are going to go to my local Ultimate Electronics and try to install a CableCard on a brand new TV in order to get their installation proceedures down.
While all this was going on, around 5 other installers stopped by to see the TV but none stayed for very long. All were polite and apologetic and none tried to discourage me into just going with a STB (Even though I could sense that they wanted to say that from some of their questions)
My install was the talk of the company as later on when we called to set up the STB, that person was even talking about it. Oh the joys of being in the forefront of tech.
As it stands now, the installer said to give them until the middle of next week and if I havent heard back, call them.
- - -
I have 10 days left on my trial. I can't stop thinking that if I wont be using CC or the OTA tuner, I could take my TV back and get a cheaper one. Probably wont as the picture is still amazing on the Mits.
Will keep you informed how this works out.
*edit *
Oh yeah, it was a Motorola Cablecard.
I printed out some of the issues with the installs from this site and the installer found it interesting and was amazed at all the feedback. He even sent the web address back to his IT dept. He nervously grinned when I told him I would be posting all my expieriences
UMD_Terp 08-20-04, 03:09 PM damn... I hope my cablecard install goes better than that. Cable guy is supposed to be here between 5:30 and 6:00
Orlun: Sorry to hear about your CableCARD issues. I've had my TWC/SA card for a week and it can be frustrating. A few observations:
1. When the CC is inserted and you bring up the Device menu, does it say "Ant-1/CableCARD" ? If not, the CC has not been authorized/initialized properly.
2. When the CC is inserted and you press the Device Menu button on the remote, does the menu appear with two (2) CC info display options?
There are two steps to setting up the CC:
1. The cableco has to AUTHORIZE the card by using the MAC address on the CC and
2. The CC needs to be initialized with all the information related to your account.
IMHO, your cableco needs to send a higher level of expertise to do the install. For my install, two foreman and a installer showed up. They didn't leave until the service was operational. They also need to be talking to their IT dept because they have control of the CC, not the same people who control the STB.
BTW, you will not be able to scan ANT-1/CC because all the channels you access to are programmed into the card. Also, there is nothing wrong having a HD STB. CC is a nice idea, but the HD STB offers more services and is a proven item.
Hope this helps and good luck......JL
UMD_Terp 08-20-04, 03:36 PM Has anyone gotten their firmware update yet? I just called Mitsubishi and they had not yet received my fax for the EULA... I sent it two days ago and they had not updated anything with regards to it. The guy said they may or may not have gotten it. He suggested sending it again and then checking towards the end of the day to see if the updated things... For all waiting on their upgrade, perhaps you need to check on it by calling them.
Mdrforce 08-20-04, 03:39 PM First time post, Long time Visitor.................
I have to say I am in love with my Mits 62". I have had mine for about 2 weeks now. To my eyes, the Mits had the best PQ vs all the others. The only thing I am concerned over is this color stripe I see on SD channels. Its red, green, and blue. I never see it on the HD stations or DVD movies. Its so weird. I only noticed it once I switched to a monster HDMI. I have an HTL-HD stb. Has anyone else seen this?? Is this just artifact?? OH I notice it on the left side of the screen the most. Thanks for listening.............................................
1. Device menu showed Cable-1/CableCARD after the card was installed.
I don't mind the STB except that I have no room for one. My built in electronics cabinet is full and there is no way to set the "set top" box on my sets top. I suppose I could hang it from the ceiling above the set.
Right now, the temporary STB is sitting under a speaker beside the tv with the TV slid over towards the opposite side to make room... (picture a built in alcove in the wall that holds the TV and speakers... 1 foot of room on either side of the screen and about a foot of open space above. I want my centered tv back eventually.
I cant remember what the CC menu said. If my head was on straight, I would have snapped a few digital pictures of the install. Next time...
spiff72 08-20-04, 04:02 PM ...and their phone is busy. I think everyone who ordered the firmware update is trying to call RIGHT NOW!
They are probably wondering why they are geting such heavy call volume right now...
Jeff
UPDATE: I finally got through, and found out that they couldn't find mine either - I just faxed it to an alternate number. Now that I think about it, I am wondering if I might have faxed the first one face up (rather than face-down) and sent them a white sheet of paper...
They have some sort of eFax systems that collects faxes a couple of times a day. I called them yesterday and sent the fax to the alternate number and Ray, a very helpful and nice service tech, called me back to confirm he got it. Doesn't computer technology suck?;)
UMD_Terp 08-20-04, 04:44 PM what is the alternate fax #? I sent mine to 949-609-4900 twice...
UMD_Terp
The alternate Mits fax number is: 949-465-6323
I would advise calling them and speaking to a service rep to let them know its coming. Otherwise your fax may end up in the circular filing cabinet.
UMD_Terp 08-20-04, 04:50 PM yeah, I will call them again later today to see if they get it this time. If they don't, I'll send it there... thanks!
by the way,
On your EULA fax the entire two pages of the agreement.
UMD_Terp 08-20-04, 05:10 PM yup did that both times...
Keyser Sose 08-20-04, 06:15 PM Has anyone gotten their firmware update yet?
Have a UPS tracking number for mine. They sent it 2nd day air.
spiff72 08-20-04, 06:32 PM Mine has been refaxed and they called my house to say they received it. Will call for a tracking number next week monday. I am still waiting for someone to post their new firware version.
Mine is currently V26.004.01
I am curious what kind of improvement (if any) others have seen who installed the update.
Thanks,
Jeff
spiff72 08-20-04, 07:01 PM Someone asked earlier, so here is a pic of mine...

Mdrforce: Check out end of thread re "good, bad, ugly" for discussion of a green vertical stripe on the left side of screen during SD viewing.
spiff72 08-20-04, 08:01 PM ...I seem to have that pesky counterclockwise tilt problem too!
spiff72 08-20-04, 08:06 PM Are those crickets I hear chirping???
UMD_Terp 08-20-04, 09:28 PM Well, called Mitsubishi and they still have not gotten my fax... even the one I sent a second time. I asked for an alternate number and the guy said there was none . He told me to call back monday to see if they update things if they get the fax. o well...
I had my cable card installed... sort of... details follow in the next post
dserban 08-20-04, 09:33 PM They are pathetic with these fax situation. I have sent three so far and if Monday they will tell me that they did not receive the last one, I will claim the warranty and have them send a technician.
If all of us getting BSed about the fax not being received are doing this, I bet they will retrieve the faxes right away.
UMD_Terp 08-20-04, 09:43 PM Well, Comcast finally got around to come out here to install the cablecard I asked for last week. I was watching TV from my digital box and all of the sudden it went dead... this was 30 minutes before the guy got there so I plugged the cable into ANT-1 and waited. Apparantly, they cut the box from my account right then...
The guy came in with just the card and I turned the TV set off. He plugged the card in and turned on the TV. After a few seconds, a white screen with all the card info pops up. He verified it with what he had written down and it matches. So we reset the TV and turn it back on. Cablecard shows up in the device listing so the TV recognized it just fine. Under the Device Menu, we were able to access 4 separate 'application' screens, each of which had various info. The card was able to 'Hunt" for the carrier and pick it up just fine. So far so good.
Then the confusion started. He called up Comcast network operation center to see if they had my digital service correctly added to the account. After 10 minutes on the phone, no one there knows anything. Apparantly, there is only one person who knows anything about cablecard installs in the entire county. He left for the day. So we go through all the cablecard menus and everything looks fine. I am able to recieve all analog channels since they are bypass... no surprise there. I can also get all the unencrypted OTA digital/HD channels like NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, and PBS. However none of the digital channels are working since no one knew if digital service was added to my account and associated with the cablecard successfully. Basically, the cablecard can tell the TV what channels it is authorized for, but can not descramble anything yet since it is not set up.
So at this point, the guy says he will try and get things resolved on the comcast end by getting in touch with the cablecard guy ASAP. If I don't see the digital channels or get contacted by someone by mid next week, I am supposed to call again to get it resolved.
All in all, the TV and the card seem to be able to talk to each other just fine. I can get all analog and unencrypted digital feeds. It is just a matter of getting the card to talk to the head end now. It is a Motorola card.
They have only installed these successfully on Panasonic and Sony TVs so far and they have very few installs of even those. This guy knew what he was doing for the most part even though he wasn't the designated cablecard installer. I think if they can clear up the confusion in the network center, it may just work... For now, analog cable and local digital stations are fine... :)
UMD_Terp 08-20-04, 09:50 PM By the way someone had noted eariler that while watching football, they were seeing the grass on the field lose focus and the come back into focus repeatedly. This effect is very barely noticeable on my cable feed and even less noticeable on the feed from my OTA antenna. This is a CBS HD channel that presumably does 1080i... it may be somewhat of a compression issue from what I can tell. I have my sharpness set at 46 and Video Noise is set to 'Reduction'. Definedge is set to ON. All other HD feeds look flawless regardless of 1080i or 720p either from the OTA antenna or the cable.
meshuggah 08-21-04, 12:50 AM hey orlun, sorry to hear of your experience, guess i expected it from midco. don't give in and settle for the stb since you would prefer the cc. make them figure it out or this will continue to happen. not that you should have to go thru hell just to get the service you expect. if they gave you any indication of when they were going to go to ue to try to set it up on one of their sets i'd like to hover over them while they were doing it. if you know, let me know, thanks !
UMD_Terp
I see this defocus/refocus on some HD channels but not on others, especially not on the premiums. I thought this could be a signal compression thing. Do cable companies compress some channels more than others? Is this unique to the Mits or do other set owners report this too?

Yes.
HTBruceM 08-21-04, 03:44 AM The Mitsubishi technical marketing/support group needs a better customer interface than just phones, faxes, and mailing flash cards around.
Especially if these firmware fixes are "frequent". Both the customer and the tech support people will be frustrated if Mitsu mgmt can't modernize. I wonder if they've budgeted for all the flash cards they're going to need?
They should take a lesson from the PC industry with internet-based support models; like providing downloadable firmware updates, technical support bulletins, online chat/support, trouble databases, etc.
If any Mitsu engineers are lurking around here, do your company a favor and propose some 21st century changes....
BTW, here is my attempt at getting the firmware upgrade: Phoned them on Tuesday. 20 minute wait. The guy said there was an update for the reset problem. No response on my other issues (left-of-image green halo). They said someone would be contacting me within 2 biz days. One day later, I get a fax (the EULA). I fax it back within a few minutes. No confirmation it was received other than my fax saying the transmission was good. That was Wed morning 8/18. After seeing the previous posts, I re-faxed a few minutes ago to the alternate number.
UMD_Terp.
1. When you got the CC menu that said "Hunt" could the tech select "Hunt" and start it looking?
2. Could you go back to the CC menus a second and third time or was it once only like mine?
UMD_Terp 08-21-04, 10:07 AM The HUNT works every time. It picks up the digital carrier just fine. I've tried this myself a few times.
I can access the cablcard menus any time. I've done it a few times without a problem. All the info seems there, it's just not descrambling the digital feeds...
videobruce 08-21-04, 10:36 AM The first 45 minutes this morning were spent on getting the card installed...facing the right way... sigh. Guess what, it wont work if you put it in backwards. I pointed out the little "face this way" emblem on the manual and inpressed into the back of the TV so I am sure he will get it right next time. It's always good to know the customer is here for support!
While all this was going on, around 5 other installers stopped by to see the TV but none stayed for very long. Hope there was enough parking on the street.
How many cable guys does it take to install a CC?:
One to hold the card and 5 to turn the TV upside down.
Thank goodness all of this was tested BEFORE it got out in the field.
x-spyder-x 08-21-04, 10:59 AM i saw a 52525 last night at BB. I thought it looked awesome and the features were nice. I have never really looked at a dlp before, but reading about this one and the hd2+ chip really intrigued me. the screen was way to reflective spiking my interest in the 725 series. One problem I noticed was that my eyes got tired and hurt a little after watching it. This was probably the eye strain people talk about. Does this go away, do you get used to it, or am i ruined on one chip dlps?

I would say the eye will go away once you adjust the set and get it out of the torch mode. Mits DLP never really gave me eye strain, I think that glare screen kind of helps in that regard.

HUGE improvement in reflections by taking off the protective screen.
Default factory setting for contrast on the Mits is 100%. Default brightness is 50%. They definitely want to draw attention in the store.... VideoBruce is right... that is definitely TORCH mode.
papaduxx 08-21-04, 02:08 PM I adjusted a set at Besybuy last week and my eyes began to hurting a bit. Do you think it is from the enviorment(Best Buy showroom) that its in or is it due to DLP tech?

I have astigmatism (wear glasses). Don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.... But in my case, looking back and forth at different computer monitors gives me eye strain. Develops into a headache if doing it for hours at a time. I think it has to do with variations in vertical refresh rates of the video. In the case of fixed pixel TV, I suppose this could translate into the different native display formats; especially if you're looking back and forth with different sets.
I have also noticed that some people have an adverse reaction to the combination of flourescent lighting and monitors/TVs. Either one by itself isn't a problem, but combining the two sometimes causes eye strain.
OR.... (and the more likely cause) is that you've just got it way too bright (too much constrast). This is a very bright set. I have to have some ambient light up in my room otherwise its just too damn bright.
papaduxx 08-21-04, 02:24 PM No it was I brought the brightness down, the Tv looked great it could have been because i was trying to compare the Tv's too much. I was looking back and forth between 2 or 3 TV's, also trying to determine if i saw rainbow, but I didn't (Knock on wood).
HTBruceM 08-21-04, 02:29 PM Anybody using firewire inputs on the '525 besides me?
Does your set have video/audio "memory" for the FW input? Mine does not appear to have it, and the manual doesn't explicitly say one way or the other.
BTW, I'm using an $8 six foot firewire cable and it looks superb. I challenge anybody to tell the difference between the overpriced Mon**** cables at the video store and the cheap ones - for a DIGITALLY transmitted signal.

Good, be glad you don't see the rainbows.
BTW, I would have turned down the CONTRAST as opposed to the BRIGHTNESS. The contrast really is the brightness control. The brightness controls the level of BLACK.
x-spyder-x 08-21-04, 03:05 PM when do the 725s come out, and if they are out already, where are the at
We (UE/Soundtrack) have an ETA of 9/13 on the 52725. 9/21 on the 62725. It'll take a few days after that to hit the stores. I would assume most retailers will have similar ETAs.
x-spyder-x 08-21-04, 04:18 PM I didn't see any rainbows but I have heard a lot of stories where people dont' see em in the store, but when they get them home.

This is true, however it doesn't bother some as might others. Folks here some much about them, when they finally see its not as sinister as they thought.

I just got my firmware upgraded STB (Moto 6200) today. I have it hooked to the set with an el cheapo firewire cable as well. My problem is I no longer get video from it. I was getting video right after I hooked it up, but now I don't. Right before it quit, I got a message that said something like, "There is a problem recording or displaying video from this device due to a copy protection issue." I'm guessing the two devices didn't synch up or whatever when I switched interfaces back to firewire from component. Now, no matter whether I start the TV first or the STB first, I still don't get video. Any ideas?
Oh yeah, on the Mitsu issue, they should really assign a person or two on their tech support desk to monitor this board and respond to issues. They would save themselves SO much time and energy. Can you imagine? We are all here reading and posting information about their TVs on an almost DAILY basis! Talk about a captive audience. With one post, they could save themselves (and their customers) at least 50 phone calls into their technical support desk. And then, Ray (yeah, I talked to him too) wouldn't have to placate so many disgusted customers. If there is anyone from Mitsubishi listening, please talk to your management about this!
It's good to know I am not the only one having problems with the Moto CCs. TWC-Houston says they are working feverishly to solve this issue. I'm taking bets on how soon they get it fixed between Moto, Mitsu, and TWC. I'm betting at least a month, but probably two.
To the guy who wasn't able to pull up the CC numbers after the first screen went away, hit your Device Menu button while on the CC input. The numbers can be found on the third menu item. Also, you won't be able to search for channels through the CC input. The channel list is received from the cable plant to the CC. There is no way to add or remove channels.

Seems like I heard somewhere that the firmware updates to the Moto 62xx box can sometimes modify some sort of identification field that could be misinterpreted by the Mitsu TV. It might think the "old" device is still present, and it won't recoginize this "new" device, so it won't accept an MPEG stream from it. Perhaps there is a fix needed to the Mits firmware to resolve it.
I wonder if you can find some way to delete the original instance of the Moto 62xx STB from inside Netcommand (I would do this while the FW cable is disconnected). Then reconnect the FW cable and let the Mits discover it again.
Bruceko 08-21-04, 09:26 PM :( Heard today that the 725 series will not have the Tv Guide channel guide nor will the initial release of the 825 series. Major bummer! So the only thing you gain on the 725 over the 525 is black grill cloth and a better anti glare screen.

Not to challenge, but, what was the source of this information?
Original specs did have TV guide listed.
alanpgh 08-21-04, 10:07 PM I saw the new 62" Mitsubishi at BB today, and it was very, very spectacular! Great on HD and very good on SD. Very wide viewing angle, almost like a Plasma.
It is a bit heavy and the depth is more than most of these types of units, but it had a better/clearer picture than any set on display, including (in my opinion) the new Samsung Captain Kirk (5085?).
I have a Sony GWIII, and it was one of the best sets in the bunch I viewed tonight, including very good viewing angle, good SD, and excellent HD. But, the new Mits. is better. I did not see any rainbows or artifacts. BB wanted $4499. for the Mits. They also had the new 52" Mits. It was very good also, but not as good a picture as the 62". Something was not quite right with the blacks on 52" screen, but this may have been an adjustment problem.
Hope this is helpful to some of you.
Alan
KeepingUp 08-21-04, 10:34 PM I heard from the AV store that I ordered the 62725 from, that the
TV Guide will not be on the 725 series, as was originally specified.
This word was given to them my Mitsubishi, and they were giving me
the opportunity to bail out of my deal if that was a deal breaker.
They also hinted that this may be a temporary deletion.
Sounds like there may be software trouble in integrating it in.
May be implemented by a firmware update.
Still looking forward to the 62725.
Keeping UP
UMD_Terp 08-21-04, 10:41 PM I too dropped by my local best buy to chek out the samsung cpt kirk. They had my set and a 62" set up nearby. The colors on the Kirk were very good. IMO, they seemed a bit exaggerated... probably a settings issue. The Mitsubishi looked much more natural in terms of color and was very smooth. Black levels on both were all in all very similar.
Given the features advantage of the Mitsubishi, it is still on the top IMO...
It is true that the Mits 725 series will be deleting the TV Guide from it's list of features. In the Mitsu training that I attended a month ago they mentioned that it might not make it into the 725 series. The decision became final last week per my Mits rep.
They had problems integrating the Gemstar TV guide with Netcommand.
I hadn't heard that they might add this feature later via firmware. I will check with my mitsu rep.
BigAl,
Could you ask your mitsu rep, if the cable card reader in these sets will be upgradeable to the 2 way cable cards when they come out. Right now these card readers are one way only, can't do PPV or VDO, it would be nice to know if they will be upgradeable. Thanks
papaduxx 08-22-04, 12:02 AM if the Tv guide is upgradeable through firmware later on, do you think they will let 525 owner have access to it?
UMD_Terp 08-22-04, 12:06 AM So then is it ture that the only things differentiating the 525 and 725 are the screen and the black cloth grille?
Bruceko 08-22-04, 01:39 AM I was told that the guide will not be able to be firmware upgraded. It is a hardware problem. There will be 825 without the guide then followed maybe in December with the 825g.
HTBruceM 08-22-04, 01:13 PM RTMoore4, did you ever get your firewire working with you Moto STB after the Moto fw upgrade?
PC Richard in NY says that the 62725 will be in the warehouse on 9/25. BB does not have the 725 in the computer; maybe they will not carry?
Does anyone else have any definite dates from B&Ms for the 725s?
This is the unit that I'm going to buy, unless the XS GWIV blows me away.
I was surprised to see the Mitsu xx525 DLPs advertised in two different newspaper circulars this morning. Looks like supply has caught up.
It was amusing to see that BB's 52" price was identical to the 62" price at the other retailer.

RTMoore4, did you ever get your firewire working with you Moto STB after the Moto fw upgrade?
Yes, I did. Removing the firewire cable and then reinserting seemed to do the trick. I'll have to keep an eye on it to see if happens again.
The most interesting thing about my firewire connection experience, however, is that the STB, which displays all digital cable channels through a component connection, ONLY displays analog channels and digital channel 105 (24x7 NASCAR channel commercial) via the firewire cable!! This is the EXACT behavior I am seeing from my CableCARD!! The message I get when I try to tune any of the other channels in is, "The program can not be watched or recorded because of a copyright problem with the tape or VCR." Actually, I don't get this message until I tune to a channel or input that can be received, so it seems like there is a bit of a lag to it. But anyway, this is actually good news for me...
I think I now know what the problem with CableCARD and TWC-Houston is! I'm betting it doesn't have anything to do with an incompatability between Moto CCs and Mitsu TVs. I bet TWC-Houston is not properly setting the broadcast flag on their digital channels, and it just so happens that Mitsu is one of the few new TVs that actually looks for and obeys the broadcast flag (even though that isn't required until next June). I would expect the same behavior via DVI/HDMI, but I don't have a cable for that yet. Can anyone else try this and confirm?
Of course, this is just a guess at this point, but an educated one, to be sure. Time to do some research on 5c issues over in the HDTV forums.

Did they have a lower price than BB for the 62"?

I bet TWC-Houston is not properly setting the broadcast flag on their digital channels, and it just so happens that Mitsu is one of the few new TVs that actually looks for and obeys the broadcast flag (even though that isn't required until next June). I would expect the same behavior via DVI/HDMI, but I don't have a cable for that yet. Can anyone else try this and confirm?
Of course, this is just a guess at this point, but an educated one, to be sure. Time to do some research on 5c issues over in the HDTV forums.
interesting... this could be why I am not getting any digital channels from my cablecard either. The channels appear on the guide listing, so the cablecard is letting me tune to them, but there is no signal. This is Comcast Cable in Montgomery County, MD. They are supposed to get things resolved for me by mid this week, and if they don't, I have to call them. I get all the analog bypass channels and the local digital stations (ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, PBS) as well... just no digital.
videobruce 08-23-04, 09:22 AM The channel list is received from the cable plant to the CC. There is no way to add or remove channels. You are telling us that all those other nuisance channels including those waste of spectrum Religious holy roller channels can't be bypassed or deleted??

I saw the BB add for the 52525 and their price was $100 more than I'm paying for a 52725 at a local independent B&M.
spiff72 08-23-04, 10:26 AM I bought the Mits 62525 last week Sunday (the 15th), and I am trying to find an advertised price for that TV so I can get them to match it with the 30 day window. I might have to call some of the local places and see if they carry it.
Thanks,
Jeff

Exactly. That is how CC works. You get all the channels advertised as being available to the CC. It will take a CC-enabled TiVo or something to be able to not show you channels you don't want to see.
Oh yeah, and no guide data is displayed for me, either. It would be there if TWC-Houston had it enabled, but they don't. I bet they won't either, as they really don't want users to use CC. They really want their customers on their STB or on their version of DVR so they get the extra lease fee and any VoD revenue.
Come on, TiVo, we want a CC-enabled version!

Jeff,
The other retailer was HHGregg. They are a large regional retailer with locations in IN, TN, KY, OH and GA. You can visit their website for pricing information including their instant rebate promotion.
The answer to your second question is yes...by a longshot.
spiff72 08-23-04, 10:47 AM As close as Indiana, eh? I am in Michigan...I wonder if BB would match their pricing! (I doubt it)

You probably won't find an advertised price less than 'list'. Mits controls their dealer network pretty tightly, and they are required to adhere to a M.A.P., or minimum advertisable price (or something similar). They can sell for less, but they can't *advertise* it......
Hope that helps...or at least saves you some time....
Randy
spiff72 08-23-04, 11:07 AM Do you think BB might match an out of state price including an instant rebate? The price at hhgregg is the same, but they are offering a significant instant rebate.
IFLYSWA 08-23-04, 11:30 AM I kind of doubt it. I know they normally say they will match/beat locally advertised prices. And the HH Gregg ad even specifies that the Mitsus are available for in-store purchase only. It might not hurt to try, but I wouldn't be too confident in it....

I didn't buy the matching mitsu stand since I didn't think my components would all fit. I ended up with a Bush stand (with glass shelves). I don't recall the model number...

I bought the MB-62525 stand. Looks great & fits perfect.
UMD_Terp 08-23-04, 12:50 PM I bought the stand for my 52"... I keep my old TV bench as a component shelf right next to it...
chaslum 08-23-04, 01:03 PM And the photos for us all to see are.... where?
UMD_Terp 08-23-04, 01:06 PM everything is a complete mess around the TV... Once I get things settled, pics will follow...
chaslum 08-23-04, 01:09 PM yea!
dwarren2 08-23-04, 04:05 PM No, I bought another stand. My components would not fit on the Mitsu stand. I have 2 VCR's, 2 satellite receivers (Dish and a 4DTV big dish) a dvd player and a Denon AV receiver. I also have 2 vcr's a TV, and a stereo system in the computer room. And a ATI All in Wonder video card in the 'puter. And 2 other TV's(one in the bedroom and one in the family room) each with a DVD player and a VCR and a stereo system.
My nick on irc is gizm0_man. Wonder why!!!
HTBruceM 08-23-04, 04:06 PM Here is a pic of my HT setup with the Mits 52525 on a Salamander "triple-20" stand. This is one end of a family room that opens to the kitchen area behind the camera. The Salamanders are fairly expensive, but built like a brick. Yes, that WAS a fireplace behind there; the Salamander triple with the caster option JUST clears & straddles the brick hearth. Needed to put a couple of those "Moving Men" plastic caster cups in the middle rear for support.
------- BTW, notice the greatly subdued flash bulb reflection in the screen.... That is with the protective screen removed. This was a straight-on direct picture, not off center. ------------
Off-topic subject: I plan to experiment with some home-brew acoustical treatments, due to front-wall reflections from my surround dipoles. Since this pic, I've added a couple silk plant ficus trees on either side of the TV to diffuse the reflections, but that didn't end up helping much.

In addition each of the sat receviers goes into one of the vcr's and I have the ant out for each going to and A/B switch which feeds co-ax going down thru the floor across the drop ceiling and up to the computer room so I can see the sat feeds there.
My wife is technology challanged. Do you know how many times I've gotten calls from my wife about watching TV when I work evening shift at the hospital!

HTBruceM, your TV in sans the protective screen right?
Greetings. Has anyone received and installed the Mitsu xx525 firmware upgrade yet? I would like to hear your opinions and observations of the upgrade.
I have a SA CC form TWCNYC and it receives all the programming the SA 8000 DVR STB does, except the guides and VOD & PPV. The on screen guide list all the channels (analog & Digital), but no channel call letters or programming info. Until 8/23, the CC was a bit unstable, but it appears to work OK today (Knock on wood). Maybe TWCNYC got their act together and has stablized the broadcast signal.
Question for other CC users: When you reset the set, do you lose the SQV settings? I lose the CC SQV setting, but the ANT-2 (OTA) settings are retained.
Regards......JL

That's right, the protective screen is removed.
BTW, the only Mitsubishi logo was on that protective screen. When you remove it, there is no more Mits logo visible on the front.

I have noticed this set has a "sweet spot" in terms of viewing angle. The image has maximum brightness in the sweet spot and dims outside that area. My Salamander stand is 25" high, but my couches are a bit high also. I would try to stay below 25" height for a stand on this set unless you're farther back than 8 or 9 feet.
I should add that this set is BRIGHT. I find it more comfortable with more ambient light than with our old set. I like this, it makes daytime casual viewing from around the room and kitchen very nice.

I just resent to the new FAX number today (check the "reset issue" thread). They asked that I call back tomorrow to confirm receipt.
UMD_Terp 08-23-04, 06:48 PM The alternate number seems to be an actual fax machine as opposed to the other number which is their malfunctioning e-fax system... I think you should be good to go if you sent it to that alternate number and someone picked it up...
Anybody have any idea if there will be any powerbuys on the Mits 62725's when they become available?
I asked earlier about the Mitsu WD-XX525 firmware update because I had not received the update I ordered 8/17/2004. Surprisingly I received the FW update CompactFlash card late today.
Before the update I noted the factory supplied software version as V26.004.01. The documentation included with the CF card indicated the software as "V26" which I did not find strange. I performed the upgrade per the instructions, but was surprised to find the sw version remained as V26.004.01. There was a message that the software upgrade was completed, so I am sure the process was successful. Was my set shipped with the most current software? That is entirely possible. The bottom line is the "upgraded" sw version is V26.004.01. If this is what your set came with, don't lose sleep over the FW/SW update. You may already have it.
Hope this helps.....JL ;)
UMD_Terp 08-23-04, 08:47 PM hmmm... I have 26.004.01 and I had to reset the TV today. I left the set tuned to NBC HD olympics and shut it off for the night... This morning, I had to reset it to get it to power up... I should get my card by the end of the week hopefully...

I just posted a similar message to the one I am posting here, but I am really surprised that the version doesn't change. I haven't seen the instructions yet, but I wonder if the TV needs to be reset after the update for it to show an updated version?
I find it ridiculous that Mits would put us (and themselves) through all of this hassle to get this firmware, and then find out that WE ALREADY HAVE THE LATEST VERSION?????
Was anyone asked when they requested the update what their current firmware version was? I know I wasn't - I just gave the serial number and the seemed to act as if the serial number feel within the proper range to need the update.
I feel almost as if they are just trying to pacify those of us with problems by sending a useless upgrade.
This is making me reconsider this purchase, despite the fact that I am very impressed by the PQ on this TV...
Any thought folks? (I have a feeling that this is going to start some interesting "discussion")...
Thanks,
Spiff
UMD_Terp 08-23-04, 09:40 PM An easy way to verify this is to tune to an HD feed.... 1080i, I think... turn the TV off overnight. Come back and try to turn it on. That is the only way I can replicate the problem.. and even then it isn't always...
mgpickens 08-23-04, 09:40 PM Just because your version number hasn't changed does not mean you don't have a tweaked firmware. If your problem has been fixed, there is a possibility that the programmer/s just forgot to increment the version number or they are using you as a test case and will increment the version if enough people report back that the fix worked.
I just ordered a 62525 on Sunday. Hope I see no rainbows and have no problems (keeping fingers crossed). Good luck on yours!:)

While that may be true, it is equally possible that they sent the wrong firmware; or that his fw update went awry; or he needs to do a hard reset.
For my part, I will be asking them the new fw version number when I call back tomorrow on my EULA fax confirmation. And how I should confirm the new firmware is in place after the upgrade.

My feeling on this is that it would be poor programming practice to not increment the version number. Seems like a quality control issue to me...How would anyone know whether the firmware was updated unless there is a secret service menu that would indicate this?
I know of one other person on this forum who had the same issue with the upgrade (version number didn't change). Just check the reset issue thread on this forum.
Thanks,

Well, I look forward to the results of your test. I assume you are going to replicate the situation that causes the necessity for a reset?
I am sure we will all be interested in the results of that, regardless of what the version number is.

I agree that there could have been mistakes made. As Jeff pointed out this same version was noted by another person in an alternate thread. Based on this second occurence is why I came to the conclusion that I posted. I think that you have an excellent thought of confirming what the new version should be, and I will be terribly interested in what their response is as to confirm the new firmware has been properly installed.
Best of luck both of you!

Matthew,
I will do what I can to try to duplicate the test, but I am not sure the best way to do it. Is the olympics feed via OTA NBC (on the internal tuner) the best source to leave the TV on to test this? It is my only option for something to leave the TV tuned to when I turn it off as it is the only thing that is ALWAYS HD lately. I don't have any external sources to try to feed 1080i to component inputs as of yet - still waiting for Dish Network to send me a new 811 receiver (that has been an exercise in frustration - but that is a different story)!
Mine has failed to turn on properly twice so far - the first time it turned on but just displayed a white screen and wouldn't respond to any remote buttons or front panel buttons, and the second time it would turn on at all (but the green LED on the front of the TV was on steady). Both required the reset to get it to turn on.
I am still waiting for Mits to ship the upgrade - they got my fax on Friday, and when i called to get the tracking number they said it prob wouldnt ship until Tuesday or Wednesday. I expect it to arrive by Friday at the latest. I just hope UPS leaves it without someone home to sign for it or I might have to wait until next Monday.
Thanks,
Jeff
scott brown 08-23-04, 11:03 PM I have checked out the samsung 5063, Kirk and the mitsubishi 52525
the kirk and mitsu looked the same to me, while both looked a bit better than the 5063. i have no use for the kirk though, as that pedestal is just not what i want
so while the mitsu definitely looked better to my eyes, do you guys think it's really 1100 bucks better? i can get a 5063 for 2900 while the mitsu is 4grand
i won't be using dvi or hdmi for dvd. my DVD source is the Arcam DV27A, so i'd be sending in component video for that, if that helps at all.

I suspect many people in this thread think just as you did... The "Kirk" and the Mits both have the HD2+ TI chip, but the "Kirk" doesn't suit my personal taste... the Toshiba has a HD2+ too, but the side speakers don't agree with me... I have a 62525 and love it... the glossy screen is the same as my old set, so it isn't an issue to me...
As for the money... Only you can decide that...

I recall back in the day, when this "flashing" business started with the V19 sets. (55869... and so forth), and on to the V21 (xxx09) and the V23 (xxx11). Sometimes, for whatever reason, the software would get corrupted and a complete reload was required. I remember people then, getting the same version, and then fixing their problems.
I don't know if mits is going to come out with new software versions. but i do know that from history, they have been coming out with less and less revisions. (1st gen .... i think had 4 versions. 2nd gen only had 2 versions. 3rd gen... didn't have any so far).
The reset problem sounds pretty severe (as opposed to the anti-glare shield issue and the fan issue), so hopefully they will provide a fix soon.
SamCarp 08-24-04, 07:47 AM Have had the 62525 for right at 4 weeks, and still think it is the best choice. Can't get enough HD programming.
Got the Software upgrade yesterday, faxed last Wednesday. It did not change the version. Will try the process to see if reset problem can be repeated.
UMD_Terp 08-24-04, 08:01 AM How do we even know that the software version is equal to the firmware version... Just a guess tho...

Have things continued to work out well using the firewire from your STB to TV? I am a neophyte when it comes to all these things, but I think I would like to use firewire also, so that I can have a DVD player plugged into the HDMI port. I was not sure if there would be a PQ difference between Firewire and HDMI though (Thinking that it is all digital there shouldn't be, but...). Or if something else made it preferable to use the HDMI for STB.
Anyone?
Anyone with the xx525 have a DVD player that they think makes the xx525 look best? Or should I just get an iScan HD? Then I could hook up my DVD Recorder, Tivo Series 2, and VCR I guess...
videobruce 08-24-04, 09:21 AM I viewed my 2nd Mits in a dark room this time so that 'glare' screen wasn't a problem.
One thing I did notice was I had to have the contrast 'wide open' (63) and even then it still was a little low compared to all the other stes. There was a Toshiba next to it and a JVC 3 sets away that were fine.
I had to reduce the brightness considerable with the Toshiba since it was very bright.
What is that ILP input (I think that was what it was called)?

Hi,
Can you put two A/V components side by side in the Mistubishi stand for the 62525? I currently have a 52525 (on an IKEA stand), however, bitten by the big screen bug (and the fact that the 62 inch TV costs only $400 more), I am upgrading. However, then I need a new stand, and am not sure what to get. I need enough space to put three items in the stand.
(1) Pioneer Elite receiver/amp, (2) Pioneer Elite DVD player, (3) Monster HT Power Center, all roughly standard size (less than 7 inches tall and 18 inches wide).
Thanks.

I think two 18" devices would fit side by side. I'll measure the front opening when I get home if you like.
I have a cable STB and a Momitsu v880 DVD player each on their own shelf. I plan to add a VCR but will probably stack it under the DVD player or the STB. I have held off putting anything else in the bay because I'm worried about heat buildup in the Momitsu DVD player. Some people say they stutter when they get too hot.
On second thought... I'm not so sure two 18" devices would fit side by side... I was thinking smalll devices like my STB, but I think it's around 12" wide. I'll check tonight...

Yes it has quite a noticeable vertical sweet spot when you stand close to the set. The Mits stand positions the height correctly (for my furniture anyway).
Horizontally, there is no problem... almost 180 degree viewing angle.

Sounds like your assertion is correct. I just got off the phone with Mits support. They said the software version we can see in the TV menu is not related to the firmware upgrade that we're doing. Two different things.
He said the Vxx number is fixed at a specific television chassis series; the other numbers are versions of one or more specific software subsystems (sorry, but I can't remember his exact words...).
Bottom line, the firmware upgrades they are sending out will NOT be reflected in the "software version" we can view in the TV menu.
HTBruceM: Thanks for the clarification. The displayed information can be very misleading. Too bad there isn't a way to verify "before and after" versions.

Yes and no.
I originally intended to create a setup similar to what you want. I wanted to use FW from the cable STB, and HDMI from the DVD player. But because the Mits has no "memory" for video settings on the firewire input, I have to readjust all the video settings every time I switch to the firewire input. That makes it too much of a pain to use. That said, once it's adjusted, it's superb. If you've read my prior post, you can see that I am using a cheap firewire 2 meter cable. I don't think I had any video/audio sync issues on the firewire, but I know there was an issue with sync on my Moto 62xx set top box between the optical audio out and the firewire. My A/V receiver offers programmable audio delay per input, so I just corrected for it there.
In terms of the future industry support for firewire... I think the industry is in a wait & see mood. I don't hear much buzz about firewire as a standard. I don't know of any DVD players/recorders that have MPEG firewire input/output capability, although I guess some D-VHS recorders use it. Most companies view firewire as a camcorder thing, and expect to see the DV format on it, not uncompressed MPEG. Mits was betting on firewire becoming more prevalent, but I don't think this will happen.
For one thing, the satellite & cable people need to get their acts straight. Technically, they are supposed to set flags in broadcasts that will limit the recording of those broadcasts. While these limits should not affect most people, it could limit what you can record. I think the current Mits TV behavior is this... if it does not see valid flags in the incoming firewire stream, it will put out a message on screen saying there is a problem with recording from that stream. Thus the TV won't regenerate that incoming firewire stream on any of its outputs; preventing any recording of the broadcast if you're using NetCommand. The Mits will still show the firewire input on-screen, but you have to live with this 30-sec graphic message overlay (problem recording...).
It seems the real horse to bet on is HDMI, everyone is gravitating toward that interface. It has HD copy protection built in, the cable is inexpensive, and it is capable of carrying video, audio AND control (no more remote hell...). At least that is the POTENTIAL. I suspect within the next 12-16 months we will see A/V receivers coming with HDMI switching, and DVD players/recorders with HDMI in/out. And firewire will be all but forgotten.
Both firewire and HDMI are digital, so theoretically, both should look equally good on the Mits. My Moto 62xx STB has DVI and firewire outputs, but I don't have a DVI-to-HDMI cable yet, so I can't give you an actual side-by-side comparison.
UMD_Terp 08-24-04, 01:13 PM HTBruceM ... thanks for calling them up and verifying that... seems to make sense. :)
UMD_Terp 08-24-04, 01:14 PM On the bottom most shelf of my 52" matching stand, I have a Xbox, and PS2... they fit down there with some room to spare.
I turned my tv on this morning and it asked if I had changed the bulb. Also, all channel setup information I had programmed has disappeared (names, deletions, etc). I powered down properly last night and had it plugged into the UPS. Have not performed a reset in a week or so. Can this set reset itself?
ruckus87 08-24-04, 01:19 PM Could someone here w/ the Mitsubishi 52" stand provide some information on storage space? Right now I am using an IKEA stand (magiker), but am interested in the Mitsu stand for the clean look.
I have a STB, Yamaha receiver, x-box and eventually a DVD player that I would like to hook up...will the 52" mitsu stand fit all the items??
thanks
papaduxx 08-24-04, 01:31 PM Have the firmware upgrades been sucessfull?
UMD_Terp 08-24-04, 01:50 PM i measure 23" opening for the 52" stand shelves... they are actually wider, because of the shape of the stand

Got rid of my reset problem. Still have the tilt issue, and slow channel changes using the CableCARD.
I love the set.
UMD_Terp 08-24-04, 02:03 PM how did you get your cablecard to work... I am still waiting on caomcast to get me set up properly. I can access 4 menus on the card and I see all the channels in the guide, but can't get the digital channels to display on the TV... what brand card do you have?

CableCARD has been working since 8/4. It's a Motorola card. Comcast has to activate the card from thier "Head End". They send a signal to the card telling it what you are authorized to view; to do that the "Head End" needs to have the serial number of the card.
I was the first CableCARD in my area, and they were totally ignorant about ALL aspects of the card, but they finally got it working.
UMD_Terp 08-24-04, 02:35 PM I have a motorola card as well... the installer tried calling the network center to get it activated, but the people he called were clueless about it.
scott brown 08-24-04, 03:06 PM well, i just pulled the trigger on the 52725. $3800 delivered, about 800 more than an hlp5063 so why the hell not
i'm going to shoot myself when the amex bill comes, but then il'll just put in a dvd and crank the surround and forget it :)

There ARE Comcast people that know how to do this.
You might want to try this: Have a Comcast tech contact Teresa. She is in the SF Bay area. They should be able to locate her with the following information... She is in Management area 12, Service area 23, Head end 06. She knows how to get it done.

I was in GG (Sunnyvale, CA) today and their system showed them receiving WD-62725's on Sept 9.
I have one on pre-order via Anderson's (Santa Clara) so hopefully they'll hit their docks about the same time.
BTW, Anderson's gave me a 50" Pany LCD as a (no extra charge) loaner when I pre-ordered back around 7/7 so if you want to get your HD fix while waiting for the technology to arrive, there's one option!!
Here's a pic.

What is the ETA your Dealer gave you on the 725?

Thanks for the info. I am looking for at least 40 inch width shelves, so I am considering buying either the Bush stand (VS73477, Best Buy) or the Bello AVS-2601. But the Bello does not seem to available in a store nearby (in NJ).

I think I have the Bush Stand that you are referring to - but mine is VS74377. It says that it is for a max 50" DLP, but I have my 62" on it, and the TV is exactly the same width as the top glass shelf.
It is probably a bit too tall, but I am happy with it so far since I sit around 15 feet away from the TV.
I have been out of town and real busy with work..so I have been gone for a few days. You guys have been a real "chatty". Glad to have many posts to read!:)
Well, after multiple faxing attempts...at least 11 at my last count...I finally got confirmation from a Mits rep that they got my fax for the firmware. I was given 3 different fax numbers. For whatever reason, my fax machine would not communicate with the e-fax system for the numbers:
949-609-4900
949-465-6147
I was given the second number tonight. Just like the 4900 number, after the pages seemed to go through...I got an annoying beep and an error message. I was given a 3rd number last night:
949-465-6323
This number worked last night. However, when I called after work the rep said they did not have my fax updated and gave me the 6147 number to try...which of course did not work. So I faxed all 3 numbers, waited 40 minutes and called them again. This time, the rep put me on hold for 5 minutes...I guess he went to the efax server and kicked it!....because when he came back....he suddenly had my fax. He told me that they will overnight the firmware tomorrow.
So for all who have not received confirmation for the firmware fax....try the 6147 number and keep pestering them!:p
I watched the HD feed for the Chiefs/ Rams game last night....it was awesome. This was with the basic cable feed from Comcast and the integrated tuner.
Anyway....as a side note...can't seem to find this answer in the HDTV forum...anyone know if the Direct TV HD tuner Samsung TS 360 has an HDMI output? D* offered me that tuner with the dish installed for $200 last night. Anyone know what new tuners will be out soon that does have the HDMI or fire-wire output?
Thanks guys...this thread is great.
alanpgh 08-24-04, 07:31 PM I have a question for scott brown.
Did you consider a JVC HD-52Z575 D-ILA HDTV? Check it out on these boards. Also, did you consider a Sony GWIII, such as the KF-50WE610?
These are both nice TVs.
Good Luck!
Alan

Scott can you let me know what dealer? I work/live in the area, PC Richard said 9/25 in their warehouse (at least for the 62", not sure if the 52" comes any earlier.
Thanks!
scott brown 08-24-04, 10:45 PM i checked out the sonys and samsungs and narrowed it down to mitsubishi. liked the kirk, but i didn't like the pedestal. i didn't like the price tag mot places had for the 52525, but then found the 725 for cheaper + delivery, so figured what the hell! :)
The front opening width of the Mits 62525 stand is 28 inches.
The glass storage tray extends back from the front opening on an angle, so you could put somewhat wider devices on it if necessary.

papaduxx 08-24-04, 11:32 PM I don't see what the big deal with the xx725 series, is the main attraction only the screen (which is the only difference between the two)?
I am seriously considering buying the 62525 really soon just hope the Kinks get worked out first.
still haven't seen the Toshiba's
What is source, retail for 725, 62 incher!! with PVR? can someone pm me?
thnx
I need help from someone who has successfully connected their PC to the Mits 525. I cannot get it to work. I have connected 2 seperate VGA cables from my video card to the Mits and the Mits does not see the PC. These cables work fine with my Dell 17" flat panel and I've tried just about everything I can think of, including using the reset button and setting it up in Netcommand, to no avail. Is there something special I must do to get this to work? With the VGA cable plugged into the tv, the only thing that shows up in Device Menu is my CableCARD. Booting the PC before or after the tv is turned on makes no difference. With both tv and PC on I can take the cable out of the tv and plug it into my flat panel and it work no problem.
Any troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.
HTBruceM 08-25-04, 03:05 AM Sorry, I've not tried the VGA connection with a PC. However, I suspect you need to set your PC to generate a specific resolution at certain refresh rates. Check Appendix B of your manual.
HTBruceM 08-25-04, 03:11 AM I have scheduled a factory authorized tech for Monday to go over the issues I have with the set. I plan to cover the green outlines, picture tilt and offset. I expect to have the firmware updated before then ;)
The tech is ISF certified, and I will likely have an ISF callibration done after the warranty work. I wonder how the ISF calibration will "hold" through firmware updates? I suspect the majority of calibration is through settings in a service menu. I just hope these settings are really, really "sticky". I'd hate to pay for a calibration that is lost.
Thanks HTBruceM, but I just figured it out. I was just looking in the wrong Device Menu. That will teach me to mess with this thing after a couple of beers :D

Looking forward to your report on the how it goes. Could you ask about the slow channel changing and channel recognition issue as well (if you've experienced it and if it isn't resolved by the firmware update). Thanks!
chaslum 08-25-04, 08:51 AM Got my 62525 yesterday and am very pleased. When I first installed it the color "red" was bing picked up as a muddy brown through all of my cable channels. X-box and menu system displayed the color but not my cable signal.
Make a long story short, after rebooting the Scientific Atlanta HD DVR box the problem was remidied (cable box problem not TV)...whew!
Again, I've only had it for 24 hours but I am very impressed. SD viewing was not so good at first but turning up "Noise Reduction", turning off "Defin Edge" and turning down sharpness the problem was remidied nicely.
HD programing and X-box are sweet... beautiful in fact. Menu system is great. I also shot some photos at the bowling alley with some friends (with my 5 megapixel digital camera). The photos looked superb via the Compact Flash Card slot. You can even arrange a slide show for a specific set of photos and rotate veritcal photos before begining the slide show too.
Fan noise- not a problem at all, quiter than my X-Box.
Reset Problem- haven't experienced it !
Reflective Screen- More reflective than my Philips LCoS, a bit of an issue until I turn my lamps off but the glossy screen makes it look nice when its off. Also, you would be suprised what you overlook when viewing the beauty that is HD on this set. Again, mind blowing.
Cant wait for football to get goin'
Go Skins!

When I first got the TV, it would give me an error message when the PC was set to 1024 X 768 @ 60 HZ, but it would still display, and I was able to overcome the problem. Get a program called Powerstrip (available through a Google search), install it on the PC, and set a custom resolution of 1280 X 720 @ 60HZ (labeled as one of the High Definition Standard settings near the top of the list available in powerstrip). After you do this, the tv should pick up the incoming signal no problem. You can compensate for any overscan issues using the command on the tv's video menu for VGA, the "auto fit" function.
I used to own an LG DLP that had the ability to switch the DVI connection in the back to accept PC DVI (which made my DVDs look very good indeed)....I wonder if there's a way to get the Mits to do this via DVI to HDMI, and I could use the Firewire input for my cable box....hmmmm.

I hooked up my G4 Powerbook to the 52525 using a DVI-HDMI cable and the DVD picture quality is outstanding. Also, I am able to hook up a PC (Dell Laptop) to the TV using the PC input, and it seems to work fine. I did not reset either the PC or TV.
technik 08-25-04, 09:33 AM Hi all,
Have now had the 62525 for a little over a week and Im still lovin it. I have a HD OTA hooked up, since Comcrap isnt going to have HD in woodbridge,va until middle of next year. Im still waiting for the firmware update as well, I faxed it to them twice last week, to the two numbers on the EULA. Come Monday, they didnt have it, and was giving the third number as well. Rep called and said they had it, and it should be here today or Tom. Sounds like it fixes the reset prob though, from what Ive read, and other noticiable fixes????
Im still windering about the shield for the 725/825's though, and am wondering if they will fit these 525's....dimensions are the same, and it wouldnt make since to mass produce three different cabinets. Although the 525 isnt bad unless there is ALOT of light, Im curious to see what the other two do for the glare...anybody got some info on that???
