Go Skins!
I watched Monday Night Football in HDTV for the first time Monday night on my new 62525. It was incredible! Beautiful picture! I watched it through Bright House cable, but I'm considering a new indoor antenna to see if the OTA PQ is better...
Go Bucs!!!

Two questions.
1) From posts here it sounds like the OTA tuner in the 525/725/825's is both SD and HD. It that correct?
2) Anyone have the dimensions of the 62" models? Mits web site says coming soon.
Thanks!
UMD_Terp 08-25-04, 10:27 AM The tuner does both analog and digital cable as well as over the air analog and digital.
Keyser Sose 08-25-04, 10:48 AM The sales people at Magnolia Hi Fi just finished there training on the new Mits DLP"S, and told me the following:
A service tech can correct the tilt problem.
The WD-52/62 725's will NOT have the channel guide.
The 725 anti glare screen WILL fit on the 525's, but you MAY have to re-calibrate the set.
They also have a NEW 4 year warranty for $400 that includes replacing the bulb. That's a $150 premium over thier standard warranty which is $250; it's worth it to me.
UMD_Terp 08-25-04, 11:10 AM recalibrate in what sense? Service menu recalibration, or just the controls we currently have available?
Keyser Sose 08-25-04, 11:17 AM "recalibrate in what sense? Service menu recalibration, or just the controls we currently have available?"
Don't know, but I'll ask the question.

Thanks for the very helpful info. Do you happen to know which service company does the extended warranty that includes the bulb? Most of these stores contract that part out. Appreciate any info.

I hooked up my G4 Powerbook to the 52525 using a DVI-HDMI cable and the DVD picture quality is outstanding. Also, I am able to hook up a PC (Dell Laptop) to the TV using the PC input, and it seems to work fine. I did not reset either the PC or TV.
Interesting that you got the HDMI port to work with your computer. I have a new video card with a DVI port coming for my Dell PC. Maybe through this connection the tv will display the PC properly in the Standard mode (i.e. fill the tv screen without vertical overscan). Only problem is I don't want to have to buy a DVI-HDMI cable only to find out that the same vertical overscan problem exists through HDMI as it does through VGA. And yes, I've tried Powerstrip to no avail.
see related posts in the "Mitsu ..good bad, ugly" thread
The mitsu rep came to my house to verify the green tint issue. He knew of no resolution and didn't seem too interested in pursuing it other then having me contact customer relations at mitsu. He did update my firmware (thankyou) BUT the TV rebooted itself later that day while I was changing channels - so there are still problems...
At his suggestion, I went back to the store to watch the 62525 there. That TV is even worse then mine. I compared a LG, SONY and the mitsu side by side using a direct cable feed to the antenna input. The mitsu definitely has a problem with the color processor related to coloring of shadows and silvers and turning them to green.
So now what do I do? unfortunately since I wanted a 60" DLP tv with pc inputs my choice is either a samsung or mitsu right now. (panasonic soon)
so I looked at the 60' hlp samsung - that has the same green issues and looks terrible in standard mode. Maybe what I'm seeing is an artifact of the technology...
so am I nuts or are other 62525 owners seeing this problem?
Auditor55 08-25-04, 01:35 PM I exchanged my Mits DLP for the Mits Diamond 55813 CRT. I loved the Mits DLP, but a combination of rainbows in addition to black crush cause me to exchange it for a CRT. Since I'm primarily a movie watcher, investing $$ in DVD's over years, I decided a display with the least compromises in that area would be best. I don't think rainbows alone were not enough to make want to exchange the DLP. Maybe I could have tweaked the DLP so that black crush would not have been an issue, however my return period was running out an I had to make a decision.
Now that I have the 55813 and I look back on the 52525 DLP, I realize how close it was to CRT performance. I actually think the 52525 does SD better than the 55813. I was watching HD Monday Night Football on the 55813, it was clear and colorful, but definately surpassed by 52525, although I still have a lot of tweaking to go with 55813. I was watching the DVD Platoon, which is a horrible noisy and grainy transfer, on the 55813 and as expected it had better shadow detail than the 52525, no blacks being crushed.
I'm waiting to watch CSI Crime Lab as well as JAG because those shows are torture tests for DLP's, LCD's and LCOS displays. I would turn the channel on the Mits DLP when watching some dark scenes on CSI Crime Lab, it was very disappointing that it could not handle the blacks as well as I thought it should. I don't want to be regulated to watching only bright HD and DVD content in order to enjoy a TV.
The DLP is almost there, it has better blacks than LCD and LCOS, but it still doesn't deliver that shadow detail like a CRT. Some might be willing to give up that extra shadow detail in favor of all the other goodies that DLP has to offer. No matter what type of display you purchase today, you are going to be making some type of compromise one way or the other.
Keyser Sose 08-25-04, 01:38 PM "so am I nuts or are other 62525 owners seeing this problem?"
I have none of these issues.
papaduxx 08-25-04, 02:16 PM I think the Mits Dlp does an excellent job with blacks. True it might have some black crush but if you didn't try looking so hard for it i don't think it would be that noticable. Just a thought

Is it possible that this is a variant of the rainbow issue rather than something different in which case you might see this effect on all DLPs?

I had wondered that, but the effect I see is easy to find in SD channels and presistent and easy to point out to others.....
btw, I have seen one rainbow in the 3 weeks that I've had the tv.
Reynard 08-25-04, 04:05 PM Even though my new pc isn't built yet, my curiosity got the best of me. I decided to plug in my Thinkpad to the VGA input just to see...
Went into the NetCommand menu to enable the VGA input and voila! Worked fine the first time out. I tried some PIP viewing with the half the screen for the PC. This is something that I was interested in for my motorsport viewing as you can have the detailed live timing & scoring right next to the video that way.
Gotta say, with the downsized image in the PIP, the PC display was definitely lacking in the legibility area. :( However I'm hopeful that with a proper PC & video card this can be overcome to some extent. If not, it's no big deal as I of course primarily want to use it for PC games.
I will say this though, the skewed tilt is really noticeable when viewing the PC. The rainbows, screen, fan et all, not a problem for me at all. Now I want the tilt fixed though.
HTBruceM, very interested on how this aspect of your service appt. goes.
gbsnplr 08-25-04, 04:58 PM I got my new 62525 yesterday and I must say I am very dissapointed with the picture. I am currently using OTA for HD content and I see much pixulization. Could the quality of the source be causing this? Also I am using a SD TiVo with both the Svideo and Antenna conector. I find the SD picture to be poor as well. Does anyone that has had this set for a while notice a better picture connected component or HDVI?

As I understand it having a digital tuner does not mean it can do HDTV. Do the 525/725/825's have an HDTV tuner.

gbsnplr - I had some similar experiences though I don't think it was as bad as you describe. I started with Tivo SD over S-Video, an old DVD player over S-Video, and HD OTA via coax. I've since purchased the HD Tivo box and could compare the old SD Tivo over S-video and HD Tivo displaying SD over HDMI. The SD is hugely improved on the HD-Tivo box over HDMI. Also I could compare HD via satellite vs. HD OTA. For me, some of the OTA HD is pretty good but some channels would pixelate (break up into box shaped artifacts). Luckily, the OTA channel that did this the most was OTA HDNet (KRON 4.2 in the Bay Area). Now I get HDNet via DirecTV's HD package and it's improved. I also saw pixelization on OTA 48.2 (Bay Area's NBC HD) especially on fast motion in the Olympics. This is the most difficult channel for me to pick up as it is in the opposite direction as the others. Now I get this on satellite - no pixelization. So I think a lot of what you're seeing may be the source and the transport. Use component, DVI, or HDMI if you can.

yes
UMD_Terp 08-25-04, 05:47 PM If you are using the NBC Olympics HD feed as a measure of how good this set is, I suggest you find another HD source... I have seen terrible artifacts and pixelation on the olympics feed on a CRT RPTV, another DLP, and my DLP... it is the source that is the problem.
I got my stand-by fan fixed (reversed) so peace and quiet is restored at my household. See earlier posts for more info but all's well that ends well.
I've had my 525 for a few days now, and thought I would share my thoughts/experiences so far.
I was concerned over the amount of picture noise I saw in several demo units, however it is non-existent in my home installation.
My unit has one fan that stays on continuously.
I have experienced the green outline issue. I have only noticed it on certain stations and with certain programs. I have not noticed it on any of the HD Olympic broadcasts (NBC), but I did notice it during the HD broadcast of Monday Night Football (ABC). Most noticably at the beginning of the broadcast with the shots of John and Al discussing the game. This was before color calibration, and I do not think I've seen it on any SD or DVD content.
I do see rainbows on occasion. I'm not sure how I feel about that.
SD programming from Dish Network looks quite good. DVD's look great. HD is spectacular. I have noticed a lot of pixelization in the Olympics and Monday Night Football HD feeds during action scenes, but I believe this is the feeds as my neighbor sees the same thing on his analog CRT display.
The default color was OK, but not great. I did an Avia calibration using just the color/tint and that did offer some improvement. I then went on to the six color adjustment, which I had never done before so I guessed at the process. I first set the color/tint back to their defaults and then used the Avia color decoder check image to set the red, green and blue values. I then used the red color bars image to adjust the magenta level followed by the green color bars image to set the cyan level. As I write this I noticed that I did not adjust the yellow level (more fun for tonight)! After this was done I then double checked the blue color bars image and did final slight tweaking using the color/tint controls.
The colors now look pretty darn good, and the picture is much improved (and was not to bad to start with). I may be able to get the color a little better with a better process or knowledge, but for now I am quite happy. I copied the settings to the other inputs and they look great now, too. I did notice after the calibration that when switching back and forth from Auto Color Balance to PerfectColor, the ACB produced a rather flat looking picture in comparison. Here are the settings I ended up with:
component-1, DVD(480i), Avia calibration:
Magenta - 38
Red - 44
Yellow - 31
Green - 32
Cyan - 29
Blue - 43
Color Temp - Low
Noise - Standard
Film Mode - Auto
Define Edge - On
Contrast - 25
Brightness - 47
Sharpness - 16
Color - 30
Tint - 29
One question I have is would I notice improved DVD picture quality if I had a DVD player that output either 480p or 720p (rather than letting the TV scale it)?

GREAT POST, ProV1! Keep em' coming like that...!
I suspect the TV's A/D conversion to fit the native DLP resolution does a pretty good job. But the better the analog coming in, the better the TV can convert. I think the best situation would be a good quality up-conversion in the DVD player to 720P and then use DVI/HDMI to the TV. But if you must use the component inputs, then look for the highest quality high sampling rate D/A converters, Faroudja processing, AND of course progressive 480p on the component out.
I plan to upgrade my DVD player next, and I'm leaning towards one with DVI/HDMI outputs (maybe new Denon 1910 or 2910). I figure the SD and HD stuff already looks pretty damn good from my Moto cable STB through the component cables; not much I can noticibly improve there. So I think the most improvement for me is to upgrade my DVD player and use the HDMI connection. Don't really need superb video D/A converters in that case, just good digital scaling. I currently have a Pioneer DV-C302D (not even progressive capable).
I have a servicer coming out Monday to check out some of my issues (under warranty) like the screen tilt, image shifting, green outlines, check the fans for correct air flow direction. He is an ISF certified tech, and I might have him do a complete ISF calibration.

I'd tend to agree with you there. Using the Avia test pattern, I'd be lying if I said I can see a difference anywhere from the min ~ max setting. I just had my annual eye exam Saturday too. :p ;)
Regarding the DVD players. You might remember I bought a Zenith DVB318 same time as this set. I like it just fine but I couldn't get it to work via the HDMI port so I'm using component for it. Still looks great (if it's a good DVD to begin with of course) & can't tell a difference between 480p/720p/1080i. I wonder somtimes if it would've been better to have bought a tried and true Denon or Panny 480p player instead.
There is no doubt that it looks better then the Xbox at 480i though but I think that really all you need is a good progressive player but not the upconversion.
I have my cable box hooked up via the HDMI port & that works great & all but again it doesn't make the picture noticeably better to my eyes. I guess what I'm trying to say is that to me, the whole DVI/HDMI thing is great for getting rid of 2 extra cables but no big deal as far as image quality is concerned. It's all about the quality of the source, first & foremost.
YMMV of course.
traderrich 08-26-04, 06:24 AM I just purchased mits 52525, paid 3600.00 plus tax. First set I took home had bad lamp out of the box , new set picked up next day. Also bought Hughes htl hd and dvi to hdmi cable. I have read about many quirks with these sets but i have 15 days(FULL REFUND ) to check it out so I will see for myself. Ive been watching it for two days mostly I watch directv and the pq is great. I had a pioneer elite pro510 hd for last five years and was wondering if mits would measure up I think pq on new mits is better. I have not seen a rainbow yet, there is a fan on left side of tv but cannot hear it with any sound on, reflective screen looks like a mirror , so I turn off the lights no big deal, I only notice green edges when I watch local channels through cable which is a pretty bad feed anyway directv locals coming to my area in central illinois so goodbye lousy cable feed. any questions? Richie
When I reviewed the Avia sharpness pattern I was able to see a difference in sharpness settings, and 16 or so was where the white outlines went away. I don't know, I don't think I had too many beers at the time of adjustment!
As for the color, I still was not completely happy with my tweaking, and trying to set it using the decoder check screen became frustrating. I ended up leaving the PerfectColor adjustment setting on, but I now have all the colors at the default 31. I then adjusted the color/tint using the blue bars image and I think this is the best setting so far. I did the color, then hue, then color one more time. I think I ended up with the color at 33 and the hue at 26. As I said before, just turning the ACB off makes a huge improvement.
I also forgot to mention that Mitsubishi DOES warrant the bulb in this unit for one year, despite what some salesperson might try to tell you.
The DVD's look great at the native resolution, almost HD like. But when I expand the image to fit the screen it loses a little of that quality, and I guess that is to be expected whether the TV or the DVD player does it. They still look really good expanded, though, so I guess I'll pass on a new DVD player for now and put it towards that Salamander Synergy tripple stand I want.
chaslum 08-26-04, 08:07 AM I have had my set for 2 days now.
Some more observations:
Again HD looks great. However, when watching the Olympics on NBCHD I notice a decent amount of dithering on fast movements, especially during the Olympic Rings wipe that they use between the slow-motion replays and back to live. However, on other HD channels I detect no motion artifacts whatsoever. Is this a symptom of NBC's signal? Is anyone else experiencing this?
NBC GRIPES I'VE BEEN HOLDING BACK 'TILL NOW:
Also, what is up with NBCHD Olympic Coverage being a day behind the local NBC channel? I thought I would be able to watch the Olympics Live in HD. We don't even get Bob Costas, we get some crummy narrator who accidentally talks into the mike during private conversations, (he called the Korean's stupid), thats something I would expect Bush or Cheney to do, but not (edited??) Olympic Coverage on NBC!!...[flame war ensues]....lol. :)
UMD_Terp 08-26-04, 08:10 AM If you are using the NBC Olympics HD feed as a measure of how good this set is, I suggest you find another HD source... I have seen terrible artifacts and pixelation on the olympics feed on a CRT RPTV, another DLP, and my DLP... it is the source that is the problem.
chaslum 08-26-04, 08:18 AM I guess I should read through the thread more thoroughly...allow me to answer my own question:

Now that we have Ferrari's it seems very few of us have access to the correct type of gas! Comcast in the DC area is the freakin' equivalent of diesel!!!!
The INHD channel looks mindblowing. So I am not too worried. Also, how big of an improvement can I expect to see using HDMI->DVI over Component for SD and HD viewing? Should I really drop $80 to $100 on these cables? If so is a DVI to HDMI converter cord from bettercables.com the best way to go?

Thanks for the detailed note on the adjustments. I see a clear difference with a DVD set for 480p. When I originally hooked up my Pioneer Elite DVD player to the Mits TV, it was set to 480i. When I changed the output (on the DVD) to 480p, I could see a dramatic change in PQ. However, I saw even better PQ when I hooked up my Powerbook (using DVI-HDMI) with the same DVD, because it shows up on the TV as 720p. I am somewhat puzzled by this since my understanding is that the DVDs are not really HD. One explanation is the purely digital path maintained in this scenario, from the Powerbook, through the DVI-HDMI cable to the TV.
JBran24 08-26-04, 09:58 AM OK. I received my Mits 62525 last Saturday. I picked the Mits DLP because it had the best contrast/black levels of the sets I was considering. So now that I've had the Mits 62525 for a few days, here is my concern: I have "tweaked" the picture settings every night since I've gotten the set. I can't seem to reach a level of satisfaction. The black levels are great. Maybe even too dark out of the box. However, I can NOT get the whites to be as bright as I had hoped. Sometimes I think the whole picture seems "muted". Am I just crazy or what? Am I expecting too much from this set? I have other issues with NetCommand and a problem connecting my Mini DV camera with the firewire, but THIS BOTHERS ME. I realize that picture quality is in the eyes of the beholder. I traded my Sony Grand Wega III to get this set. Maybe LCD is just a "brighter and whiter" than DLP. Maybe this TV just reveals more of the inadequecies of the sourece material. Maybe I should call Mitsubishi to get a tech out to see me. I value your thoughts and opinions. Thanks.

I asked a similar question here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=4220249
My HD Tivo box came with cables so I'm skipping the expensive Monster variety. I would think the bettercables.com cables would be fine based on the responses in the thread above.
UMD_Terp 08-26-04, 10:37 AM MiniDV will not work... the firewire inputs on the set will onyl accept a MPEG video stream... not any other type of compression.

I have been tweaking it every night as well. I do think this tv reveals poor source material for what it is (see my last couple posts today). It is night and day when I go from (SD Local) to HD channels and this is what prompts most of my obsessive tweaking. What are your opinions of the HD channels GW III vs Mits DLP? I wish the HD mandate (July 2005?)would hurry and get here! JBran, do you use digital cable and is it Comcast?

JBran24,
Hey, I sympathize with you. Personally, I like the GWIII sets; lack of deep CRT-quality blacks in LCD projection really does not bother me much. Nevertheless, I bought the Mits anyway. I like the Mits features, and I was very happy with my last Mits set.
From reading your post and knowing your prior set was LCD projection, I would venture a guess that your eyes are accustomed to brightness and poor blacks. You can simulate this on the Mits set by turning the brightness way up to mid 40's; (loss of black levels; overall "whitening" of the picture) and keep the contrast setting relatively low - like around 23 or so.
Based on my own experiences, I think better blacks can be an adjustment for people who are used to very bright displays. Your eyes are telling you that you're not seeing all the detail because the shadows are darker now. But this is the effect that deeper blacks has.
Just my 2 cents on what you might be experiencing.
JBran24 08-26-04, 02:06 PM "JBran, do you use digital cable and is it Comcast?"
- I have D*****TV with an off air antenna for my locals. We have Charter cable in my area and they don't seem to know much about HDTV and their programming reflects it.
"Based on my own experiences, I think better blacks can be an adjustment for people who are used to very bright displays. Your eyes are telling you that you're not seeing all the detail because the shadows are darker now. But this is the effect that deeper blacks has."
- That may be true. When I made my purchase I was positive that the Mits DLP had a more life like, less "cartoonish" picture than my previous LCD set. I was also positive that the Mits had more detail and better contrast than the Sammy HLP (HD3) set I was also considering. Certainly, I am most satisfied when watching HD or playing XBOX. But who isn't? DVD's tend to reveal more of this. Try watching the credits roll. The whites have a bluish tint (IMO).

Check your color temperature. Temp=high means bluer whites. Lowest color temp should be closer to industry standard and give whiter whites.
JBran24 08-26-04, 03:05 PM Yes. I kept the temp setting on warm. It makes the flesh tones more natural. You know, I really hate second guessing myself on a product that costs so much money.

How about any changes you might have made in the PerfectColor menu? Or is it set to AUTO? The manual says AutoColor=AUTO setting will make subtle color changes dynamically... I wonder if this is partially based on room ambient lighting? You might try unchecking AUTO and just leave the color settings at their default settings (value=31 on all 6 colors).
You could also try reducing the blue color adjustment in PerfectColor if you still believe the whites are too blue.
My old Mits CRT used to have an ambient room light sensor and they would adjust contrast & brightness automatically. They called it "IRIS". No such thing on this set, but I wouldn't doubt if PerfectColor=Auto does some sort of ambient light sensing; although I'll be damned if I can find where the sensor is! ;)
On Monday, I plan to have an ISF calibration done on my 52525. I am curious to see just how much color adjustments they can make in the service menu.

UMD_Terp 08-26-04, 06:53 PM Repost from other thread:
I came home and opened the screen door... and a package fell on my feet.. It was the firmware update...
Opened it up and immediately stuck it in my computer... The have some very interesting files on there :) looks like they are using embedded vxworks in their TVs. There is a folder that has a whole bunch of test patterns in it in jpg format. A lot of other data files... nothing really useful as far as I can tell.
Then I went over to my TV and it updated without a hitch. Rescaned for OTA channels and the scanning has improved greatly. The "prefer digital" bug i was seeing previously is gone. Overall much improved. The reset issue is probably gone, but time will tell :)
Looks like they finally came through... now if I can only get Comcast to get my cablecard to work
Reynard 08-26-04, 10:41 PM Looks like the setup menu, is the setup menu, is the setup menu. It matters not what cables (or cable) you're using to output your video from with the player, there is no option to "enable" the DVI output.
So I spent the last 30 minutes searching through the 2 long 318 threads and it appears I'm not alone. I few others also have the player lock up when trying to connect with DVI, while it works fine with component cables.
It's not dependent on the display as different tv's, brands etc. are affected. The only common thing is that it seems to be when using a DVI -> HDMI conversion cable & that there is no fix for it. :(
Oh well. Like I said it looks great with the components on this tv but it is food for thought for anyone getting one of these (or other tv) with HDMI and planning on using it for a DVD player. You might want to pass on the Zenith.

Last night I remembered that my DVD player had settings for the output format. I changed it to output 16:9 instead of 4:3 letterbox, and the picture looks a little better as a result. Now I can set the TV format to 'standard' and it only has to widen the picture, whereas before I had to set it to 'expand' and it would have to widen the picture and make it taller. One less conversion in the TV I guess.

UMD_Terp 08-27-04, 09:45 AM you actually got a center speaker on top of the TV?
chaslum 08-27-04, 09:49 AM yea, it sits up there pretty nicely. I was initially worried about it falling off but the feet on the Klipsch Center Speaker kinda acts as a guard. Works for me.

Chas - I'm seeing rainbows on the left side picture.
I too received my reset firmware upgrade - easily installed. Will wait a few days before I claim victory. Anyone else had this installed for more than 4 or 5 days? Any resets?
spiff72 08-27-04, 12:35 PM I know this is an odd question, but when you use the internal tuner on the Mits 62525, how do you suppose it is "connected" to the display? Is it like a component video feed? Or is it more like a DVI feed (without the unnecessary D/A and A/D conversions?
Thanks!
Jeff

Probably just a symptom of the digital photography. You might also be seeing the reflections from my blinds.
I saw Rainbows on my last set (the LCoS) but I cant even see them if I try with this set. Waving hand with open fingers in front of face, and looking away and back again do not produce them for me.

I have the Mits 525. I love it. Had it for about 2 weeks now.
I have a few questions if anyone has time.
1. I have not been able to get the PIP to work with over the air digital as the main view and my hughes tivo via s-video input. So service reps have said it won't work and others said it should.... Am I doing anything wrong?
2. There has been a few post on firmware updates.. How do I know if I need it or have it?
Thanks for your time.
Darin
P.s.
I have my pc hooked up to the vga connection. I used power strio for a little tweaking.... 720p Looks great. If anyone wants the custom timmings I used, just pm me.
I could never get my pc's dvi to work very well with a hdmi converter, or ATI's componet adapter. regardless to the resolution I tried.
Got my new 62525 - got it for a killer price too - and I absolutely love it. The DVD feed even with an old 480i type player is UNBELIEVABLE, and the digital cable is incredible - the SD is okay... not as bad as I was afraid of but not as great either....
I have one question though - I know I get Digital cable through Brighthouse (Miami, yeah we're one of the few neighborhoods that does not have Comcast) - and I can't believe they would be encrypting all the Digital channels - given this has a built in tuner HOW do I get it to tune any digital channels - it gets me all the analog channels of the cable but NO digital.
Even with an Antenna I can't get any digital channels - when it goes thorugh the tuning it seems to be adding some channels but then when I check the guide OR manually tune to the channels it seems to be adding I don't get any?!
Appreciate any help !! Thanks.
Nick

you need a cablecard to decrypt the digital stations. I am currently having a customer service nightmare with Comcast in getting my cablecard to work... I get analog cable and a few unencrypted digital channels... I can't get a single person from comcast to either call me back or come out to set it up properly. I make appointments but no one shows up... I can't speak to any supervisors or the people there who know about cablecard. These guys are a complete joke. I called my local county office to complain and they actually have a dept set up to field comcast complaints... :o

They're also considering legislation to hold COMCAST to their service commitment promises due to the number of complaints about cable and internet complaints they've had.

I hope they do... They have missed two appointments with me already costing me about 10 hours worth of waiting. Every time I call them, I am told someone will call me back... I have yet to have someone from comcrap call or leave a message. At least if you are going to break an appointment, call ahead of time instead of just not showing up. I am currently waiting for their cablecard guy to call me... lets see if that ever happens
chaslum 08-27-04, 04:01 PM I thought Mits said the 725 screens wouldn't work with the 525's?
Now I'm confused.
Also, when removing the screen, do you have to unscrew the black bezel before you can pop it off, or is it just supposed to snap-off?
All those of you who were trying to decide between the Sammy HLP's and this set should be very happy that you went with the Mits. Almost the entire HLP forum has just turned into people with problems venting frustration.
Yeah for us!
millerwill 08-27-04, 04:26 PM chaslum: I think you misread the situation. Many more people have bought hlp's and the vast majority have no problem (myself included). The small percentage that have problems, however, can still be larger than the number that have problems with the Mits, simply because of the numbers involved. (A small percentage of a large number can be larger than a larger percentage of a smaller number!)

Stick a credit card (or flat plastic spatula, or plastic putty knife) into the gap on front side. This will compress some expanding plastic pieces effective unlatching the thing. There are three on each side. The instruction at the end of the manaul are pretty good at telling you how to do it.
Just make sure you don't use anything metal like screw drivers; you will chip/scratch/gouge something.

True. I bet the 130,000 sets Sammy has sold far exceeds Mits's distribution.
However I based my statements on the 43 pages of HLP thread and the 54 pages of this here Mits thread.

Actually, most everybody in the HLP thread are pretty much delighted with their TVs. There have been some production/delivery issues, no doubt, both in production quantities and the infamous ballast problem, but for the most part people have been happy with the sets and any problems were handled well by TVA/Samsung. I think a lot of the issues have arisen out of Samsung not necessarily giving TVA accurate/timely information, and TVA's reluctance to point the finger at their supplier for the problems. That's just my take on it. Anyway, enjoy your Mits, and I might be joining you...or I might buy a Samsung and enjoy it. Both are good sets...it just depends on the individual. For me, the jury is still out! :)

HTBruceM 08-27-04, 04:42 PM OK all you Mits owners..... Lets hope there are no more posts in the "Reset Problem" thread!!! Here's to watching that sucker drop lower and lower in the RPTV forum until it's gone! Cheers!
Mdrforce 08-27-04, 05:11 PM Im still going through the STB battles. I tried to use the Samsung Ts-360 and it would not work with my DVI>Hdmi monster cable. It would only let me use the resolution of 480p/480i. Anything with 1081/720p would get me picture then snow over and over again. Granted I did not see the red, green, and blue when watching SD when I had the Hughes, but I could not watch HD. Go figure... I called the tech support at Samsung and the level 2 Tech guy told my mits and the samsung could not shake hands do to the HDCP. So I took another trip to Best Buy and picked up the Hughes HTL-HD again. I guess I will have to live with this problem. I dont know what else to do? Any suggestions????
videobruce 08-27-04, 05:15 PM I just saw the Mits at Sears along side of the JVC LCoS!

UMD_Terp 08-27-04, 06:04 PM No reset problems in 24 hours yet... digital tuner works much better with a weak OTA signal and other tuner bugs I found are fixed.
Also, when I came home, the cable guy was there waiting... gave me a new cablecard and bam... all the channels I am supposed to get are there... It took me complaining to the county to have this done... amazing. Oh well... at least I got what I wanted in the end. cablecard works fine... just as expected...
Lets see what happens when comcast changes their digital lineup as of Sept 1st tho...
papaduxx 08-27-04, 07:10 PM I saw the Toshiba DLP the other day and i really was not impressed. It was really bright even when i turned the lamp on low and played with the other menus. The Mits just looks so much better in HD PQ and when i checked the DVD PQ on both. Granted I only saw the Toshiba for a couple of min. on the DVD player. The Mits i saw for a while playing both Ice age and Shrek. I also put in any given sunday dvd real quick and the people looked alittle to redish/orange but that can probably be solved with some more tweaking right. I don't think that is common in the Mits right?

But only about 2 notches or so - and only on the cable feeds. I don't think I've needed to change the DVD (component 1 input ) with any tint changes.
ritewinger 08-27-04, 09:46 PM UMD TERP (and any other Cablecard users).....how do you like the Cablecard system? To me it is a high priority to have but I have heard there is a 2-3 sec delay while switching channels. Any truth to that? Any other complaints or is it as expected? Thanks!!
Bruceko 08-28-04, 12:16 AM My set takes 2 to 3 seconds to change channels just on regular cable. the tuner seems to be very slow
ritewinger
The tuner is quite slow....up to 5 seconds sometimes when tuning to an encrypted channel. I certainly hope this is fixed soon. Other than that, CableCARD is working just great for me.
UMD_Terp
Glad you finally got your CableCARD working. :)
bestbuy.com parts is stating they have the 725 and 825 screens in stock ready to ship NOW..... I called them , and they verified that they have them on hand for me as well....Im tempted.... here's the links
I thought since the on-screen guide will no longer be in the Medallion series, the difference between the 525 and 725 will only be $200-300. Seems better to upgrade than buy the screen if you're still in your return timeframe.
UMD_Terp 08-28-04, 09:47 AM The cablecard is fine... the tuner is a little slow, but not any slower with the cablecard really... the main slowness I see is when switching between SD channels and HD channels. It's nothing really big, but for you fast channel surfers, it could be annoying. However, I will note that my old digital cable box was actually slower than the TV tuner, so for me it is a non issue.
UMD_TERP,
No problems with CC? That is great because that means that the Mitsu WD-52525 has no inherent problems with CC. I have a SA CC from TWC-NYC and it is not working well. Sometimes I need to do a hard rest of the 525 to get all the channels. I have no problem when using a SA 8000HD on the same set. I have a feeling TWC has not configured their end correctly and that is why I keep losing the signal to the card. I am very frustrated.
Which cable provider and CC are you using? Any recommedations?
TIA...JL

Are you in Montgomery County? If so, read the Comcast franchise. You may well find that you are entitled to $ for eached no-show. Before Comcast became the franchise here, the old franchise holder being thrown out, I subscribed to cable and became dissatisfied with the service. The last straw was 4 no-shows. I left for Dish TV (and absolutely love it!) and wrote requesting my $40 for the no-show's. I Cc'd the County Cable Office and ultimately got my $40.
I signed the check over to the local Humane Society and mailed it to them, CC the cable manager that i had dealt with.:D
UMD_Terp 08-28-04, 11:56 AM Yeah, i am going to get refunded at least $20 for the no show... I know that for a fact. I should also get refunded for the time I was without digital cable... which amounted to about a week. I am in Montgomery County.... the guy who finally came out with the right card was apologetic and he told me flat out that Comcast is not set up for new technology like this. They are scrambling to get their infrastructure set up for all this. He told me that they take the card and test it at their head end with a panasonic or a sony TV and configure it for all the options and channel packages that the user has. All they do then is give you the card and everything is set up. BTW, this is a motorola card...
For anyone still requiring hard resets, the firmware upgrade is a must. Not only does it fix that issue, but it improves tuner functionality... call up mitsubishi and ask for it...
SRFast
I had the exact problem you are having with lost digital channels. Had to do the hard reset and all to get them back. SA CableCARD on TWC system here. After installing it two days ago, the new firmware has apparently cured this problem. I agree with the others here that this firmware upgrade is a must.
UMD_Terp
Put the Mits into PIP mode with two digital channels and see how fast you can change the channels. When I do this the channels change much faster. I don't see why they can't make the channels change just as fast in the regular viewing mode.
UMD_Terp 08-28-04, 08:32 PM interesting about the PIP channel changing... strange that it would be faster with it enabled... I'm going to go try it now :)
The firmware has been updated since 08/23. The CC is still flakey. I am convinced that TWC does not have it configured correctly. Their database says I have a "cable box" and a DVR. The "cable box" has to be the CC. I have low confidence in TWC's CC support because when I call, no one has a clue. I've had some success in getting the CC to work by resetting the 525, but this is time consuming and this is unacceptable to me. If I could not receive any channels, that would be one thing, but the fact that I get all the BASIC cable channels and HD (Network, Discovery & PBS) and not the others annoy the heck out of me.
Regards....JL

If their database says you have a "cable box" and you have a cable card, I'd start there in trying to solve your problems. I think there's another TWC CC user in this thread...does TWC think he has a cable box too?
UMD_Terp 08-28-04, 10:54 PM here is my guess...
The basic channels you are seeing are analog bypass and do not need anything from the cablecard to be decrypted... the other HD channels might be transmitted unencrypted and the tuner is picking them up. The digital channels are encrypted and since your CC is not set up properly, you don't see them...
Vijay K 08-29-04, 12:54 AM Switched to 62525
Based on the excellent PQ and the bitten by big(ger) screen bug, I went in for the 62525. Sears was nice (well, I am paying more now) about taking the 52525 back and giving me the 62525 at the same terms (10% off, free delivery, 1 year no pmt, no interest). For those shopping, note that Sears has lowered the price on both the 52525 and 62525 and with the 10% off, it is quite attractive, so check it out.
So far so good, everything works well as before, except the screen is even larger!! BTW, I feel that the 62525 seems to be a bit brighter than the 52525. This is based on the default settings, as the set was delivered.
On a separate note, I notice that whenever the camera zooms in OR there is rapid side-side movement (in the Olympics HD coverage), I see pixelation, so this must be something coming out of NBC (and whatever HD encoder they are using). Even so, I am getting spoiled by the HD picture quality, and find that watching the SD channels is really difficult.
Thanks for your input regarding my CC issues. I have placed a call to the TWC-NYC CC "programmer" and will convey my concerns and dissatisfaction with the CC's performance. I've ungraded the 525's firmware and other 525 owner's have no major CC issues means TWC needs to look in their backyard. The OTA and SA 8000HD DVR channels work as they should and I can just walk away from the CC, but I refuse to do that. I pay for CC service and I want it fixed.
Regards....JL
videobruce 08-29-04, 09:11 AM Where is the contrast set on these sets?
Is it the full 63? Both sets I have seen it was wide open and even in a darker room it was just enough!
IronHorse 08-29-04, 09:24 AM I see where the availability of the Low-Glare Diamond Screen has happened (albeit at rape & pillage prices), so I'm wondering if the screen is being manufactured, are the actual sets (52725) in stock or about to appear in all the mass-market retailers?
technik 08-29-04, 11:19 AM Does appear that the shields are available....and yes they are $$$, some may want to got the 725, but me, I dont like the felt covers on the bottom, I like the silver look, have tried removing, but IMO I think it looks unfinished...Im still debating on whether or not to go with a new screen or not. Maybe Mits will come out with a finish kit for if/when the shield is removed, but Im not holding my breath....
On the firmware fix, after 3 days all seems great, tuner is more stable and NO reset probs, as well as no longer getting the lamp replcament message at boot.

Is the 62525 Mits only in stores at Sears? I am trying to find a lower price on it so I can get BB to match it, but I don't see it listed on their website.
Thanks!
Jeff
IronHorse 08-29-04, 03:11 PM Is the 52725 physically different than the 52525, and if so... can you describe the differences (aesthetic or electronic) and maybe a link to a picture and specs? I'm curious about your "felt" comments... what does that mean? Do the speakers have a fabric cover rather than a metal cover? Is there any real difference in the price?
And Vijay... what's with the Sears 10% discount? We can't list retail prices here, so maybe you can PM me and explain. Sears does have a relatively nice selection of RPTVs considering who they are. Circuit City OTH seems to be pushing Samsungs all the time even though they have some other brands.
Mike
UMD_Terp 08-29-04, 07:47 PM Now that the gemstar guide will not be included with the 725, the only difference between that and the 525 will be the screen and the black felt speaker grilles instead of the silver on the 525... I think the silver grilles on the 525 go very well with the matching stand.

Gotta admit that I like the silver look better and I'm not big on the black fabric, but I think I'll wait to look at the screen before I pick between the two. The 525 screen doesn't bother me that much. It's about the same as my current CRT and my wife actually thinks it looks nice. The room we'll put it in has easily controlled lighting. But still...
Would appreciate any news on 725 sightings especially in the DC area.

chaslum 08-29-04, 09:00 PM I popped my reflective screen off yesterday and was amazed at how easy it was. I wrapped it in a blanket and threw it under my bed. I didn't think the picture could get any better!!! wow.
The only thing that bothers me about losing the reflective screen is loosing that MITSUBISHI emblem at the bottom of the screen. Does anybody know where I might be able to get a stick on Mits emblem? I DO NOT want to use a razor to scrape the one off the protective screen. duh.

From Mitsubishi website under promotions (mitsubishi-tv dot com):
Between August 5 and September 7, when you buy any Mitsubishi home theater product using your Mitsubishi Three Diamond® Card, you don't pay anything for two years!** Why wait? Enjoy your new Mitsubishi home theater system today with no down payment.

Thanks...I did check their website, but apparently I didn't do a good job. I didn't even see the Promotions tab. I just figured there would be a link to any promotions from the products....wrong again!
Thanks!

I think you could either call customer service or the parts ordering # and order it... (it couldn't possibly be that expensive..)
Plus i thought there was some talk about a replacement screen that can would go in place of the diamondshield... perhaps that one will have a logo on it already...
On another note.. Its incredibly to see this thread having over 1000 posts.. wow.
phillyaj 08-30-04, 06:58 AM I'm curioius....I'm looking at the 525...but also seriously considering waiting for the 725. Guy at video store (Camera Stop in Medford, NJ), who seemed very knowledgable said there will be some picture differences in the 725. I'm also concerned about the glare. My Family room has skylights, and my current mitsubishi (with a Diamond Shield) has glare. Is it true that the 725 will have less glare?? Also, I have 3 kids (11, 9 and 5) and have reservations about removing the 'protective shield'.
Also, anyone hear of Mitsu extending the Fianancing offer?? The 725 isn't in yet and I can't get it before Sept 7.
Thanks
Andy
videobruce 08-30-04, 08:54 AM Do you really NEED that guide and need a protective screen? If you are OK with that mirror like screen removed, get the 525.

I talked to the Mitsu rep a little while ago and he told me there would be absolutly no difference in picture quality just features. They all have the same componets inside. Now the difference between the 525 and the 725 is cosmetic and the upgraded screen.
Vijay K 08-30-04, 09:48 AM Jeff,
Yes, the Sears website does not list it (neither does BB), and you can get it only in-store. BTW, the Sears guy told me that their extended warranty WILL COVER the lamps, in case you are wondering.
phillyaj 08-30-04, 09:50 AM Is it true that there is only a $200 difference between the 525 and 725?? Might be worth it...especially if you can catch a deal.
Mits sent me the firmware upgrade last week and I installed it successfully. I have not had any tuner related problem since and the reset issue is gone.
I think Mitsubishi customer service has done well and with the current DLP technology, the WD-x2525 series is a winner when considering all that Mits is offering.
videobruce 08-30-04, 11:17 AM The service manual is still NOT available in printed form yet, but IS in CD form for the same price ($40) directly from Mits Parts: 800-553-7278
phillyaj: Went to a Ken Cranes last week. The guy looked it up on his computer and said the price differential would be $200. Also said he had been to a Mitsubishi training session only a short while ago. and the only non-cosmetic difference will be the screen.

Maybe Mits will come out with a finish kit for if/when the shield is removed, but Im not holding my breath....
On the firmware fix, after 3 days all seems great, tuner is more stable and NO reset probs, as well as no longer getting the lamp replcament message at boot.
Can you post where the sheilds are available? Are they going for much less than the reported $200 price difference between the 725 and the 525? Also, can anyone confirm the low-glare sheild fits the 525?
I am close to pulling the trigger on this set (after months of comparison shopping the Toshiba & Samsung DLPs and the Hitachi & Sony LCDs), but the current 525 glare screen is a deal-breaker.
HTBruceM 08-30-04, 03:22 PM Just finished with the Mits-authorized servicer about my two major issues:
1) Green outline on left edge of certain images, on NTSC originated material
Result: He said this is inherent with all NTSC broadcasts and is magnified in all HD televisions. He said it was known as "red shift", and it results in green outline on left edges and red outline on right edges. Your eye does not notice the red outline on right edges nearly as much as the "lack of red" on left edges resulting in the green cast. The red color information in the NTSC signal is time-shifted slightly and there is nothing you can do about it. I tried to press him on why the Motorola 6200 STB did not show it, but he said there were minor design differences in NTSC tuners that might be better at adjusting for red shift, but apparently not on the Mits. The issue does appear in the Moto STB, but much less apparent. He was very confident in this view and would not report the "Issue" to Mits technical support.
2) Tilt of picture along the bottom edge
Result: I had originally thought this was a plain tilt adjustment issue. But after throwing in the 1.78 screen adjustment image from Digital Video Essentials DVD, it was apparent this was not purely a tilt problem. The image could not be squared off totally on the top and bottom. Either the top or bottom line would never be "linear" along the edge of the picture. So it seems there is a trapezoidal adjustment that needs to be made. He tried to adjust for this using the adjustment screws behind a panel on the front, but those adjustments would only result in tilt and vertical/horizontal picture adjustments. Just like if you had a projector in your hand and moved it around in the up/down/left/right & rotate manner. It almost looks to me as if the rear projection mirror is not 100% flat; like maybe one corner of it needs a "shim" to flatten it out. Anyway, the Mits technical support decided to send out a whole new light engine. Seems like a shot in the dark to me; the tech thought so too. But that is what they decided the next step should be.
UMD_Terp 08-30-04, 03:28 PM woah... a new light engine for the tilt
the green outline is hardly noticeable to me... only on very poor SD channels do I see a hint of it. Nothing that is really bothersome.
The tilt is interesting... I don't notice it much either... but I could swear at times I see it. If a new light engine fixes it, then I think Mits. will be sending out a lot of new light engines...
HTBruceM 08-30-04, 04:53 PM Yeah, replacing the light engine seems like overkill to me. I'm not very optimistic this will fix the issue. But you gotta go with what they want to do - they're the experts.
UMD_Terp 08-30-04, 05:26 PM if it is a manufacturing defect with the light engines that has been fixed, then I would imagine the 725 models and the most recent 525 models to not have the tilt issue.
technik 08-30-04, 06:22 PM Only time I see the Tilt is when there are black bars on the bottom (2.35:1 DVD) or when the PC input is used......who wants to try the light engine fix???
ad10ad....
here's a link to the post with the shields...and no..they are more than the diff between the 525 and 725, but as I said, some MAY not like the black fabric on the bottom, IMO I like the silver cover instead.

Just curious if you actually saw the 52725 in person and could offer us some ideas of the actual differences both cosmetic and electronic? I for one would like to know what the extra $150 (or whatever) is for. It can't be the screen because (assuming it's lexan either way) plastic cost per pound has nothing to do with having a microfinish on the mold that would supposedly cut the glare slightly. As opposed to a mirror finish... which actually is a tougher tool to build.
Of course, it could be just the fact that the 725 is newer than the 525 and Mitsubishi wants you (or delaers want you) to pay more for a newer but technically identical model?
rtmoore4 08-30-04, 07:43 PM Wow, the adjustment setting screws didn't fix the tilt, huh? That really sucks. I was counting on those to fix the problem.
BTW, I pulled up my DVE disc and looked at the overscan screen. It really looks to me like a simple tilt problem. Both the bottom and the top are slanted upwards on the right side of the screen, and they look about even. If it was a trapezoidal problem, I would expect to see differing slants between the top and the bottom. Everyone who has posted on this issue has said basically the same thing as well. I wonder if you just have a "bad" set?
dwarren2 08-30-04, 07:54 PM Seeing a 725 is impossible, since they aren't out yet. I was basing it on the refectivity problem. Ours will be in our living room, in front of a triple window. Also, when I put in the order, the TV Guide was still going to be included. Besides, the price I paid was the same price that BB has advertised the 52525 for.

The 62525 I saw at a local BB definately had a tilt issue. The right side was slightly higher than the left. It was noticeable when that Mitsubishi demo with a horizontal bar near the top running the width of the screen.
I was ever so close to going this route but I am again holding out hope that the Panasonic DLP is an alternative.
papaduxx 08-30-04, 09:58 PM so how exactly do you look for the "tilt" issue on the TV? What would you see? I am going to BB tomarrow and want to see maybe if the display has it.

I pre-ordered a 52725. My dealer in San Diego is telling me 9/20. I'd sure like to have a firm date, because Adelphia won't even schedule an appointment to install HD unless the TV is for sure here.
Is there going to be a price break now that the programming guide has (reportedly) been deleted? I definitely needed the anti-glare screen -- I hope it works!
Is there anyone out there with ALL of the answers? :p
A salesman at a local Magnolia told me yesterday that the 725's will include the channel guide. I challenged him with what I have read on the forum but he told me that Mitsubishi told him this last week at a training session.
I'm not sure that I believe him. He also told me that they might not even carry the 1080p Samsung because the Mitsubishi's were so good.
Replacing the light engine does sound like a bit overkill, but Mitsubishi may have determined the problem is in it somewhere and doesn't want a field technician messing around with it, especially on a set only a few weeks old. Better to just replace the whole light engine and keep their customers happy. At least I hope that's their thinking.
It does seem a bit strange that the adjustment screws didn't fix the tilt. The angle of tilt on the top and bottom of my screen is the same. Just speculating here, but it could be that Mitsubishi saw the problem but decided to ship these units anyway to meet some delivery deadline, and have the problem fixed by a field service technician. I say this because my tilt is obvious enough that someone at the factory *should* have seen it and had it corrected.
I patiently await the outcome of the light engine replacement.

What has been defeatured in the '725 series was the "TV Guide" version of the channel and program listing system. Apparently these two use different technology.

tony See if you can get a std definition broadcast of one of the news channels with the ticker running across the bottom. If its there, you will see it on those channels. Otherwise you could take your Video Essentials or Avia DVD with you and get them to play it; run the 1:78 test pattern that has the four circles in each corner and expanding square boxes on the screen. This pattern is used to adjust the image alignment and overscan paremeters.

Those of you with the tilt.... Have you run the test pattern from DVE or Avia? Without the test pattern, it is really hard to notice if the top is aligned because not many horizontal picture features are aligned across the top of the screen. I thought it was just tilt myself until we stuck in the DVE disc.
I watched the guy playing with the adjustment screws. You can see that they are just changing the axis of the light engine. You can't alter the basic geometry of the image at all; i.e. you cannot "shrink" the image to reduce overscan or "zoom" it to increase overscan. You can only shift the entire image AS IS... up, down, left right, and rotate (tilt). Perhaps there is some other internal adjustment to reduce overscan by moving the light engine slightly closer to the first mirror. The ones I saw were definitely mechanical changes; the service guy didn't even go into a service menu of any kind.
My theory is that one of the stationary mirror mounts (external to the light engine) is slightly off in one corner, but that's just a wild-assed guess.
Is there any way to directly select an input on this set without going through the device menu? Without discrete IR codes for each input it is going to be a challenge to program my Pronto Neo!!!

Andy Excellent question... I'll bet Mitsubishi marketing has been trying to brainstorm some creative answers to that very question for a while now....
HTBruceM 08-31-04, 11:07 AM Just for grins, I experimented today with the DVE test pattern that shows the alignment (tilt) issue.
Pursuing my hunch about the mirror alignment, I tried to tweak the rear panel slightly to see what happens. I pressed downward on the lower right rear panel (looking at the front of the set). This is the large plastic rear panel with the big embedded Mitsubishi logo. This will "fix" my tilt problem - brings everything into alignement and squared up. I get about a 1/16" upward movement at the top right horizontal line, and about a 5/16" upward movement at the bottom right. Almost negligible movement of the lines on the left side of the screen.
Big "aha", right? Seems to me this confirms the problem isn't the light engine - it is the alignment of some mirror; likely the final large mirror on the back panel. Seems like lots of plastic on this set, I guess that might make sense, not a lot of rigidity there.
Guess I'll try to contact the service guy and tell him what I've found.
Good work HTBruceM. Just tried that same thing here, pushing down on the back panel on the right hand side, and was able to get the tilt almost straightened out. Couldn't press hard enough to get it perfectly straight though. I achieved better results by putting the chassis into a twist. With my hands on the top front corners I pressed back with the left and pulled forward on the right.
UMD_Terp 08-31-04, 12:38 PM wow... very interesting find! I'd be interested to see what the tech says to this.
gr8erimage 08-31-04, 12:38 PM I've been messing around with the tilt thing and came to the same conclusion. The pictures next to the adjustment knobs are very misleading. If they acutally did what they showed than they would be of some use. They show a picture that looks like a tilt adjustment but the vertical adjustment just seems to adjust the vertical position and the horizontal adjustment just seems to rotate the image.
Has any one pulled off the screen to take a look at how the mirror is mounted inside. I'll probably try to get to that some time this week and let you know what I find.
HTBruceM 08-31-04, 02:42 PM Using the DVE 1:78 test pattern, if I measure the distance between the top and bottom horizontal bars, I get exactly 24 inches on the right edge of the screen, and 24 and 5/16 inches on the left edge. That confirms my issue is not a simple tilt/rotate adjustment. That strongly hints at an alignment issue somewhere in the path from the light engine to the front screen.
Seems like there should be at least two stationary mirrors in there... A smaller one that reflects the light engine output onto the rear panel. Then a larger mirror on the rear panel reflects the image onto the front screen. My thinking is that it could be anything in that path, but most likely the problem is on the rear panel where the rigidity of the chassis comes into play.
No response yet from the service guy. I have a hunch he might not appreciate a customer making service suggestions to him, but I could be wrong.
*** Edited 6:55pm... I had the left/right measurement backwards; fixed it above****
HTBruceM 08-31-04, 02:51 PM BTW, I noticed in the RPTV pictures forum, "TowJumper" has an Optoma DLP has the same test pattern up on his screen, and the damn thing looks perfectly linear, although maybe a slight shift to the right.

MadsenD 08-31-04, 07:58 PM Ok, I've got a question for the rest of you 52525/62525 owners out there. I noticed today when I was behind the TV making some connections that the panel back there feels quite warm even when the TV hasn't been on at all. It was most noticable near the CableCard slot cover and the cover itself was very warm to the touch.
Just wondering from the rest of you if your TV's are similar to this. Could this be results of the fan issue that was mentioned? Or is this just normal. My 52525 is marked as being manufactured in June 2004 SN# 1011XX. Can any of you give any advice? Those of you who have dealt with the fan issues could you PM me?
Thanks! The TV has been great so far! :)
UMD_Terp 08-31-04, 08:08 PM When the set is off, I notice that the area around the cablecard is warm. I think that is why there is a constant running fan in that location... there are in fact vent holes for that fan right around that area. When the TV is on, I have noticed that that area cools down quite a bit.
HTBruceM 08-31-04, 09:07 PM Originally posted by spiff72

Thanks,
Jeff Probably and almost. DVE has an equivalent pattern at title 12, chapter 20. I have Comcast cable, and they don't do HDNet.
HTBruceM 08-31-04, 09:11 PM I'm pretty sure the cablecard is active & talking to the cable company all the time.
Reynard 08-31-04, 09:52 PM Agreed with Terp. The connection panel, as a whole, stays very warm when the tv is off. Once it's turned on and the main fan is running, it totally cools off. I not using a Cablecard either.
MadsenD 09-01-04, 02:09 AM Thanks for the info. Good to know that it's not just mine. I guess I don't have to worry about it any longer since the fan definately doesn't sound loud like some people have mentioned happening with the fan issues originally.
I got the discreet device input codes working last night!
Thanks to a reference here, I found several good threads on this over at Remote Central (search for Mitsu 65809 and MX-500 remote). I have a Pronto Neo, and there were also several NCF files out there for Mitsu RP TVs - I used the most recent dated one and it worked with the 525. I did not use the hex IR definitions that were also out there, instead I copied several codes from the NCF files that were out there and then learned the rest on my own. Here is how to get the remote into the discreet device input mode:
Set the slider switch to TV mode. Press and hold the power button and enter the code 090. Make sure to point the remote away from the TV as this will turn it on/off! The input devices, and power/reset, can now be selected as follows:
Power = power ON only
Stop = power OFF only
Pause = AV Reset
Pressing device followed by:
PIP/POP = ANT-DTV
PIP Device = INP-DTV
1 = input 1
2 = input 2
3 = input 3
4 = input 4
5 = component 1
6 = component 2
SQV = Input STB
QV = Input VGA
PIP CH Up = Ant-1
PIP CH Down = Ant-2
I think these are all valid on the 525, but I only used input 1, ant-1, and component-1 so you may have to play around with them to see what each selects for sure. To return the remote back to normal operation, press and hold the power button and enter the code 000.
Rufhausen 09-01-04, 02:12 PM I've lurking here for a few days (took me that long to get thru this thread), and after some deliberation, purchased a WD62525.
I took delivery of it this morning and noticed that the date on the back of the unit says "July 2004".
I was wondering it this could be used to help figure out if my unit most likely does or does not already have the firmware update discussed here.
Does anyone have a unit dated prior to July?
Thanks.
UMD_Terp 09-01-04, 02:15 PM I would call up Mitsubishi and give them your serial number... they should be able to tell you if you need the firmware fix or not. If you see any funny behavior with the tuner or if your TV won't turn on at all for some reason without a hard reset, then you should get the firmware. It will be a week tomorrow with the new firmware for me and there have been no tuner problems or resets required so far.
MadsenD 09-01-04, 02:18 PM My 52525 is dated June 2004 and did not have the firmware update. If you have problems scanning digital stations or getting the TV to turn on yours most likely doesn't either. Calling up Mitsubishi and giving them your serial number is probably your best bet on knowing for sure.
I would give it a spin and see if you have problems.

It's torture that I had it delivered this morning and then had to leave for work. I was able to get a few of the local OTA HDs before I left with an antenna just laying on my couch in the basement next to the TV. Will hookup the D*tivo and DVD tonight. I'm scaling back my satellite package and getting the cheapest cable package I can that includes HD w/HDpvr tomorrow.
Ok, I'm hoping this is simply a case of me being dumb or too tired to figure this out. I came home today and my 52525 would not turn on. The Timer/Power light is green and blinking fast.
I checked the manual which indicated this means the set is powering up. Well, clearly that was not the case.
Having read about the "Reset" problem, but not having experienced it myself, I am guessing I may be the latest victim.
So again, I read the manual which told me how to perform a reset. The problem is that it's not helping. When I hold the reset button in, the Timer/Power light stops blinking, but as soon as I release it, it starts blinking again and does not stop (even though the manual claims it should stop blinking after a minute or so).
After failed attempts at using System Reset, I also tried unplugging the set for a few minutes, but that hasn't helped either.
As a last resort, I phoned Mitsubishi. As I've often experienced since reading these forums regularly, I knew more about the TV and its known problems than the CR. To make a long story short, he said I should call Mits parts and order the firmware.
I'm happy to get the firmware to fix the problem, but I'm worried this may not be a simple reset problem, since others here were able to get their sets running again after resetting it even without applying the firmware fix.
If this sounds familiar to someone and you know how I can get it working again, please let me know. In the meantime, I suppose I'll order that firmware.
Thanks in advance,
eth2
UMD_Terp 09-01-04, 07:43 PM sounds like you have perhaps a more serious issue. It seems your set is in a perpetual reset state and it won't come out.
One thing I would suggest... I was reading the troubleshooting section on the set, and it seems that the power supply has some sort of a failsafe shut off feature if the AC power drops out or is not good. I would try plugging it into a different outlet to see if that helps. If not, then I think you should raise this issue with Mitsubishi and tell them it won't turn on at all... even before the firmware fix, the set woudl turn on after a reset. It is unacceptable to have a completely non-working set and maybe they can overnight the firmware or send a tech with it to you if you press them further.

It is unacceptable to have a completely non-working set and maybe they can overnight the firmware or send a tech with it to you if you press them further.
Thanks for the advice. I tried other power outlets, but to no avail. A bit ticked off at this point, I called Mitsubishi again and this time got a much more helpful rep. While he couldn't solve the problem, he agreed this does not sound like a simple Reset problem. He said this seems like an internal electronic issue with the set--that really narrows it down--and said he would escalate the issue to their engineering department.
Then he told me to expect to hear back within 24-48 hours. I told him I wasn't too happy about staring at a nearly $4K paperweight while I wait for a phone call.
I'm calling the store I bought it from (Myer-Emco) first thing tomorrow. The set was delivered only two weeks ago tomorrow, and they have a 30 day no questions asked return policy. So I will likely ask them to replace the set.
I'll post an update as the situation is (hopefully quickly) resolved. Not having my HD content, I feel like a junkie who needs a fix.

UMD_Terp 09-01-04, 08:36 PM I would then just take it back to Myer-Emco and they should give you a new one... BTW, you are a local guy... I take it you got it at the Gaithersburg Myer-Emco... :)

Actually since I did a lot of my test viewing during my lunch hour, I ended up buying the set at the the Tysons Corner location in VA which is close to work. Did you buy at ME Gaithersburg? If so, I'm curious of what you thought of them.
Overall I think ME has a knowledgeable staff compared to the typical "help" at BB and CC. They also price-matched a competitor's coupon so I saved a bit off MSRP. That combined with their return and upgrade policies convinced me to choose them. About the only nit I have in retrospect is the term of their financing. At 6 months, ME's financing period is much shorter than Tweeter's which is running 18 months. When I call them tomorrow I will ask them about restructuring to match Tweeter. They'll love that.
Feel free to PM me if you care to comment on your experiences with ME. We're probably straying off topic, not that this monster thread really has a set topic.

There seem to be a bunch of us from the DC area. I've had very good experiences with ME (I just read that and it sounds very egotistical so I'll tell those from other areas that ME=Myer-Emco). Their staff is very good although some of their sales people know more than others. I'd say that ALL of them know more than the BB and CC people I've talked to. You can also send them an e-mail via their website. I've gotten excellent responses from them that way. Very prompt too. I'm sure they'll take care of you, but please let us know.

UMD_Terp 09-01-04, 10:24 PM I actually purchased my TV from The Big Screen Store. They were offering 24 month same as cash financing so that was hard to turn down. Also, they came down on the price of the TV a fair amount and their staff seemed pretty helpful as well.
I actually used to work in Gaithersburg, but I now work in Columbia. :)
clangro 09-02-04, 12:58 AM What is the average price you can expect percentage wise off on this set from MSRP? Right now, the most I've seen taken off is 12.5% off MSRP. Is that good? Great? Average? Mediocre?
In addition, anyone have an Xbox hooked up to this bad boy? If so, how is it hooked up?
Someone said the Mits won't display 720p if plugged via component, it simply displays a blue screen (Are these DLPs powered by Windows 98 or something? :P) Any truth to that?
Is a 3rd party VGA cable better than Monster or MS component?

I would give it a spin and see if you have problems.
"If it aint broke, don't fix it!"
Well, it happened. Turned it on when the cable guy showed up and had to do a reset.
So I guess units with a July 2004 manufacture date are not immune to the problem.
On hold with Mitsubishi as we speak.

Paul_PDX 09-02-04, 04:32 PM If you are looking at any two different sized sets of the same design usually the smaller one will look a bit crisper and brighter than the larger one (especially with out of box calibration settings). Both have great whites as you get them adjusted correctly but since the bulb in both is the same the smaller set can be adjusted brighter if you push then out of calibration.
(this is why the older Samsungs used a larger bulb in their original 61" models than in their 43" models 200W vs 110W I believe -- I don't think they are still doing that now).

I had a 52525 and upgraded to the 62525. I did not notice any difference in the brightness or colors. In fact, I am surprised by how bright (and uniform) the 62525 is.
I seen both at best buy, they were right next to each other...the 52 was much brighter... Ill still take the 62 anyday...
Maybee the 62 has better black levels than the 52
clangro 09-03-04, 01:19 AM Not to interject into the technical discussion, but I'm curious to see if anyone knows about Best Buy's 10% off coupon for a Sept 3-6 sale.
I believe the Mits 52525 is $3699 as it stands now. If I can use the 10% coupon on that price, I'm sold, but I'm a bit concerned I'll make the trip only to be told "Sorry, we can't give you 10% off that price" or something like that.
I know Best Buy has these 10% coupons all the time, but do they actually work, or are they more of a ploy?
If they don't, I'll try to get a price match from a cheaper competitor's ad.
mgpickens 09-03-04, 06:29 AM I have already been in to talk to Best Buy about the coupon and you can use it on the Big Screens. The bummer for me was that I bought the T.V last weekend. I was price matching Sears and then the Best Buy sales guy was telling me that I would get this three hundred dollar gift card also. I go to fill out the form for the gift card on Wednesday and the form says that if you price match you can't have the gift card. I go back and the manager says tough, basically. I think I am still getting a pretty good deal, then I also signed up for the Best Buy Rebate club and that is supposed to get me about a hundred and forty-five in gift coupons... I am supposed to get my T.V. tomorrow, just in time for the hurricane to annoy me a little bit.
Now I just have to hope that my wife doesn't see rainbows everywhere. We had an Infocus X1 and had to get rid of it because of how horrible the rainbow problem was. I even saw them. But I haven't seen any rainbows on the Rear Projection sets...My wife thinks she has seen the twice on the Mits, but you can never be sure... Oh, out of 5 BB guys I found one who actually knew about and was willing to believe the rainbow issue. The others told me that I didn't know what I was talking about.
Good luck in your purchase! If the Mits doesn't work for me I will get a 61 JVC or maybe wait for the 60 Hitachi 810 or Sony GWIVs.

What exact model of a Mits do you have?
Ever notice any lag?
Is this true everyone, I've heard that if something goes wrong with your Mits tv, its hard to get it replaced since they do not sell parts to distributors such as BB or CC?

I have the WD52525... As for the replacement, I don't think it is an issue. There are three local authorized Mitsubishi service centers here. Plus, the dealer that I purchased the TV from exclusively sells Mitsubishi TVs.
I have noticed no video lag at all... with any type of video input.
chaslum 09-03-04, 07:48 AM For those of you who are debating making a purchase of the Mits 52 or 62 DLP's I would strongly suggest going with a more high-end store. BB and CC frequently botch deliveries and sets will often show up damaged. Also, the people at those stores have no idea what is going on.
Additionally, if something should go wrong with your set, you can forget about prompt, reliable customer service through the company.
I also think that a 3-5 year service plan is a very good investment.
Just because the initial prices at higher-end stores might be a bit higher, doesn't mean you can't haggle a bit. In fact, people on this thread have even haggled free X-boxes and replacement bulbs out of thier purchase!
Good luck trying to haggle at BB or CC. In fact, your lucky if they even speak English as a first language.
p.s. Hurray for 60 pages!

Damn you chaslum for your lucky ability to have your choice of dealer.
According to Mitsu's dealer search on their website, I have 8 dealers within 100 miles of where I live:
1 Fry's Electronics - No bulb replacement in service plan.
1 Hi Fi Buys - No bulb replacement in service plan.
2 H H Gregg - 10% restocking fee on returns.
1 Sears, Roebuck & Company - $700 for 5 year service plan. Unwilling to negociate at all except with a price match.
1 EVOLUTION HOME THEATER - $100+ delivery charge. Poor return policy. No extended service plans for sale.
2 Best Buy - Most likely place to buy from so far.
Maybe Mitsu's site is wrong, but I certainly don't want to risk it.
And besides, most HT stores deliver within 20 miles. They won't do over that, or they charge a lot more.
One note... the mitsu lamp does have a year warranty and it is cheaper to replace ($200) than the lamps in most other micro-device RPTVs.
I'm lookin for the best DVD demo movie for my Mits 62525. Some of my friends are coming over to see my new set, so I don't want to have to hunt through several DVDs to find something cool.
I'd like something that's a full 16:9 so it fills the screen. Most movies like The Matrix are Cinemascope at 2.35, so I get the small bars at the top and bottom.
Finding Nemo and Final Fantasy are both cool, but they're animations. Star Wars, Replacement killers, Aliens, and most other current movies are Cinemascope... I do have a couple of HD channels, but would like to show a DVD too...
Thinking about the bit-enhanced Spiderman... Any good? Better than the original wide screen DVD?
Thanks,

technik 09-03-04, 03:49 PM I have another prob thats seems to have reared its head...Has anyone tried to use the VCHip feature?? I configured the VChip to the default time (Always block) based on content rating. It works fine, untill I have to overide to watch something above the current rating limit. Once I overide, and then renable VChip, it no longer blocks anything above the selected rating. The only way to get it to start blocking again, is to reset. (I tried power off, unplug, enable, disable, before the reset to no avail) Has anybody else tested the VChip out yet. When I hit the info button, it does show the rating, but its like VChip stays disabled no matter what....any thoughts??
FYI....Still waiting on a callback from Mit for the tilt issue, Think I will call this in under a warranty issue, since I only have till Sept 14 to take back....
frankMitsuWD 09-03-04, 05:58 PM I just purchased the WD-62525 from the local Sears outlet, they will match the price of any competitor. I end up with the tv with a 5 yr warranty, delivery and tax for $[MSRP Only]. Their warranty is the no-lemon kind, therefore if they come to fic the TV 3 times on a year you get a new one.
frankMitsuWD 09-03-04, 06:00 PM One more item, during the five years you could the tech every year for free clean-up and the LAMP is included in the warranty. which makes the difference from the other places.

If so in the front of the box hit the power, then menu buttons in the center of the box and change the second setting from 480 to nothing..or something like that i had the same problem and that fixed it.

kbarduca 09-03-04, 08:02 PM I just recently purchased a wd52725 through Mitsubucks (mitsubishi's spiff program). I work at a local retail store that sells mitsubishi products. I hear that they are having a problem with the Tv Guide feature and that is why they have not yet been released. Does anybody know an ETA on this model.
FYI- At my store we sell All the sony LCD's, JVC's HDILA, Phillips LCoS. None of them compare to Mistu's dlp. The Blacks are awesome and the colors more accurate than the rest, especially the reds. The only thing that the JVC's HDILA has on the dlp, is that it is brighter. Other than that it blows everything out of the water. If you are looking to purchase any rear projection set Mitsu's dlp is a home run. GO MITS (it was worth the wait)
Thanks, Kevin Barduca
Duffboy 09-03-04, 08:04 PM Often, not always, the Mits does not pick up the signal from my HDTivo via HDMI after being powered off for several hours? Is there any fix for this or has anyone else experienced?
I think using "standby" on the tivo works but that is a manual exercise as there is no discreet code for standby. Also a nuisance.

I think the 52725 is going to be worth the wait. The biggest drawback to the current Mits DLP is the glare screen. If the anti-glare screen on the 52725 is anything like the anti-glare screen on the Mits Diamond CRT's, 52725 owners are going to be some happy campers because those anti-glare screens work great. There's going to be a lot of moaning and gnashing of teeth for many who decided to get Toshiba's, D-ILA's and Kirk's because of the glare on 52525. We told them all along that the 52725 is coming.

Back at post #1047 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=4260730#post4260730) , Reynard also posted an issue between the DVB318 DVD player's DVI output and the Mits HDMI input.
It looks to me like the HDCP authentication protocols between units, is quite complex. I suspect we'll see a number of incompatibilities between units show up. Will take time to iron these things out. Once the manufacturers start to get customer complaints/returns due to "A won't work with B", they'll do more compatibility testing during their development cycles. Until then, best you can do is register your complaint. At least the Mits was designed with some internal firmware upgrade capability, so there is hope it can be fixed assuming the root cause is in the TV and not in the Tivo box.
Let the finger pointing begin :D
Duffboy 09-04-04, 07:36 AM HTBruceM,
That's what I was afraid of.
I've tried different inputs, different channels, when I've cut the TV off but there seems to be no specific scenario when it loses it's signal. It does appear the longer the TV is off the greater the chances the HDMI signal is lost.
I'll keep exploring and talk/complain to Mits.
IFLYSWA 09-04-04, 03:04 PM Hi...
Today I finally took the plunge on a 62725....UE shows it expected in their warehouse on 9/14...I should get a day or two later (hopefully!). According to the rep I purchased from (who has generally been knowledgable and helpful), the Mitsu rep told him that the differences between the 725 and 525 include the anti-glare screen, the cosmetic difference on the front, and the lens is crystal rather than plastic. This is the first reference I've heard about the lens being different. Can anybody confirm or deny this? The price difference was about $180 ($162 after the 10% that they are giving off), so it seemed worth it. I am curious about this business regarding the lens, though...seems like that would have been more widely reported.....
Thanks!
Randy
Can someone tell me if the tuner in the Mits xx525 obeys copy protection flags, and what that would mean for a signal going to and coming from the set via firewire? I'm using a 52525 with CableCARD and was wondering whether the CC/tuner would change a "copy once" flag to a "copy none" flag before outputting the signal via firewire to a DVHS deck or would it pass it through unchanged. I'm a little concerned about not being able to record HD because of these blasted flags my cable company is sending in their signal.
UMD_Terp 09-04-04, 05:15 PM I think the TV does obey copy flags and they are passed over firewire.

Thanks, HTBruce....I hadn't found that. Tried the link from the product page and got the 'Coming Soon' message. Interesting....I might have to give them (Mitsu) a call on Tuesday. It's probably worth the extra $162 for the better screen (unless it has to come off, too), but I'd like to know for sure...

kbarduca 09-05-04, 02:20 AM The only difference between the "725" and "525" is the anti glare screen (which is not mitsu's diamond anti glare) and the on screen Tv Guide. Which does not work. Interesting how the weight listed in the specs is exactly the same for the 525, 725, and 825. Doesn't surprise me so much between the 525 and the 725 although it suggest the innnards are identical and the glare/anti-glare screens weigh the same. The 825, however, at least has the extra HD inside which you would think would at least add some tenths of a pound...???
Either that or all these specs were written up a while ago and will change as someone suggested.

P.C. Richard says 825's will be in NY (long Island) stores Sept. 22
k2 -
PCR told me that 62725 would be in warehouse on 9/25. That was about 2-3 weeks ago. Interesting that they are telling you about 825's already. Was this in their system? IMHO, PCR has the worst return policy, unfortunately. They do not have a 30 day return policy, just a 3 visit lemon policy. If you get headaches or are bothered by rainbows, tough luck! too bad, because I don't mind giving local B&M my business.
P.C. Richard ..no 30 day return..hmmm
But I do have a 10% discound card for opening a first time credit card account. I watched the 525 for a long time with no ill effect
$5k+ TV this will take some thought (G)
P.S. Where should I buy an 825 on long island if not PCR?
Is the picture image of non HD content on the WD-xx525 in the "480i/p Narrow" display format the same picture image as if I was watching it on a non wide picture/standard TV? I am curious to know if the picture is distorted in anyway.
TIA.....JL

Yes, assuming that the source is standard 4:3 format. If it is a widescreen DVD, then his may not be the case.

HTBruceM 09-05-04, 12:47 PM Just a warning to people interested in the PVR capability in the xx825 series. You will NOT be able to have the PVR record from any of the component inputs or the HDMI input.
So if you are a satellite or cable box STB user, you will not be able to record in digital format from those STB devices - unless your STB has active firewire outputs. If your STB will generate composite video out from an HD source, then you might be able to use one of the Mits composite video inputs for recording; but you obviously loose all the HD quality.
In my area, the Mits tuner is unable to get Discovery-HD, ESPN-HD, and all the non-HD digital channels; puts quite a limit on the digital channel recording capability using the Mits tuner. I suspect if I had cablecard, this would not be the case.
My firewire is active from the STB, so theoretically, I could use netcommand to schedule recordings from the STB via firewire. I'm pretty sure the Motorola 6200 STB does not support the control codes over firewire (i.e. channel change, on/off, etc); I would have to use IR blasters. This assumes netcommand either understands my STB infrared remote codes or can be taught. If I want to watch a different channel while recording, I would have to use the Mits tuner while the PVR is recording from the STB. Or vice versa. Either choice results in some limitations.
The simpler they try to make these things, the more complicated it seems to get....
spiff72 09-05-04, 01:42 PM Hello all,
I have noticed that on occasion (overnight shutoff usually), when I look at the channel guide for my cable feed, it seems to add a bunch of digital channels without my rescanning the channels. It did it this morning, and none of them seem to have anything shown. I did notice that it asked if the lamp was changed when I turned it on...I suspect that these are the scrambled digital channels that I have access to. I also noticed that when I go to charter.com, I see the NBC and ABC HD channels are listed in the "HD lifeline", while the ones like ESPNHD and Discovery HD are in the HD tier. Could this be why I can get them (lifeline = free?)?
I also find that sometimes when I turn it off, when I turn it back on it is on a channel that I never watch...
I have applied the firmware fix...
Thanks,
Jeff

Good question. I was waiting until the 725 landed and then I was going to find a store. BB has the 525 but they never have any idea on when newer models show up, if ever. I will PM you if/when I hear about alternatives.
Maybe for such a large sale PCR will give us the 30 [exchange] if we refuse to buy otherwise.
Question about the PIP/POP mode.
Has anyone figured out how to change channels if the mode is set to 3 or 9 POP mode. On my set, the channels will change sequentially...meaning the 3 or 9 POPs images will cycle. I can't set the individual POPs to specific channels....that is to set the first at channel 3, another at 42, and a third at 56. They have to be in sequentional order....ie channel 2, 3, and 4.
Anyone know how to make this function more user friendly?
AVCrazed 09-06-04, 01:45 AM All,
I am a long time lurker and first time poster. I was in BB today and ran into a Mitsu rep who was promoting the latest 62525 at one of the Chandler, AZ stores. Among a number of topics discussed, he confirmed the release of the 725 in roughly two weeks from today. However, he also noted that the 725 which is essentially the same as the 525 will be touted as a premium model. Therefore, BB will not be carrying it. For approximately $300 more, the 725 will have a anti-glare protective screen and a black cloth cover replacing the current cheesy silver plastic grill. Everything else will be identical as the 525. That right, there is no change in the lense. When asked about the tilt issue, he acknowledged it as being about 1 degree and suggested that the owner manually level the lamp as a work around. I know that a different solution has been discussed here, but for whatever this info is worth, I thought it might be helpful.
I been a long time fan of Samsung, but I am most likely going to give up on waiting for a model with the tuners, and buy the Mitsu 62725 instead.

Thanks for that info....nice to hear it came directly from a Mitsu rep. I'll tell the guy at UE to get his source to double check and warn him he is most likely misinforming people. I really don't think it is intentional on his part...

Wow...the guy might have lost credibility with me here....he suggested the owner make a manual adjustment to the lamp??? Am I the only one that finds this a little disturbing? I'm even surprised that wouldn't cause you warranty problems....

I was in pretty much the same boat. I hate giving up the second digital input, even though I don't currently have a specific use in mind for it. But I like the color control and the inclusion of the ATSC/QAM tuner on the Mits, as well. That, combined with the revelation that the Samsung HD2+ tabletop sets will utilize their older light engine w/6 segment color wheel pushed me over to the Mits. I have to admit I am starting to have some second thoughts, though....the tilt issue (and their response) scares me a little. I guess I'll go ahead and take delivery and use my 30 days to determine my comfort level.
Thanks again for passing along the info...

technik 09-06-04, 08:28 AM Well....I was getting REALLY close to the end of the 30 day exchange, so I went to BB yesterday. I was wanted (once again) to make sure that I didnt waht another, I looked at the Tosh and Samsung DLPs, as well as the new JVC LCOS, and the panny LCDs. The Mits still looks good. Then I wanted to see if there was ANY tilt among the others. They ALL had some kind of tilt, even if i t was small, as well as overscan. I had them hook up a DVD player in progressive mode via componet to the Mits, the JVC, and the Tosh. The Mits still shines. The rep from BB Ive been dealing (IMO is pretty well informed) was telling me that the 525 will be disco'd, and that BB WILL be carrying the 725's, and should have them in a couple weeks. Since I have now exchanged (Due in Wed) for another 525 ( I couldnt give the Mits up for another) I once again have a 30 day window....Im hoping that maybe the 725's will be in before October 8th which is when my NEW 30 exchange would expire because...
The 725 will hopefully...
1) come with the firmware fix (cause Im going to have to deal with that with the new 525 for sure)
2)maybe tilt is fixed (my current 525 has the nonlinear tilt prob, bottom right .75" greater than left, top right .50 smaller than left. Top and bottom left are equal. The "Bend" starts about 3/4 across screen.
3) we all know about the anti-glare
4) would pay the diff and get it!!
Another local BM store is telling me they will have the 725's third week September.
Will see how things go......

To AVCRAZED, or anyone who has more info about the details of this adjustment, how to "level" the lamp, which direction to move it, etc. I have had my 62525 for about 4 days, and after removing the diamond shield, the picture is super high contrast, and awesome. Haven't even seen a HD pic yet, as won't have outside antenna or D* upgrade until tomorrow, but DVD on progressive is great! My main complaint is the tilt issue, and I will call my technician tomorrow to see what he has to say and share that. I have explored the adjustment screws behind the front panel above the front inputs, and also looked at the lamp area, but have not attempted any adjustments. Other posts here seem to indicate adjusting the screws does no good anyway.

AVCrazed 09-06-04, 09:47 AM technik,
Thanks for sharing with us your experience with speaking to yet another BB related person. It appears that the Mitsu rep and BB rep just canceled one another's report as to BB's release of the 725.
I don't have any further info to share on the bulb leveling. Given the contradictions in the BB stories and risk involved in voiding the warranty as IFLYSWA pointed out, I would not trust the Mitsu rep's advice too much.
I have been thinking, however, that if BB will soon be selling the 725 (I hope the info above is correct), I am going to ask for a 10% discount. By then I am sure the Labor Day sale will be long over, but I am going to try to talk them into extending the discount to my purchase. Alternatively, I will need to purchase it on-line to save a few bucks and avoid paying tax. Does anyone know of any reputable/trustworthy online merchant?

papaduxx 09-06-04, 12:51 PM Has anyone asked someone from BB if the WD-xx725 is in the system b/c last i checked it wasn't. I will check today when i go to work.

BB rep that I talked to said it wasnt in the sys yet, but expected it to be next week or so....
I can only hope as of yet though..

spiff72 09-06-04, 01:52 PM Hey everyone...I just went to BB and they honored the 10% off coupon on the Mits DLP I bought 3 weeks ago! I was ready to put up a fight and tell them that I could just return mine and buy another with the coupon, and then they would have an open box TV to deal with, but they anticipated my argument. Didn't even have to put up a fight!
Just thought I would post and let anyone know it could be worth the effort to go in TODAY if you are in the same situation. It is only good until the end of business today, after all...
Here's the link if you missed it...

I actually got it in an email from BB as well...
I am now feeling much better about the price I got...
Good luck,
Jeff
ritewinger 09-06-04, 01:56 PM I'm going to my local BB in about 60 minutes to see if they will accept the coupon for a pre-order of the Mits 725. Papaduxx, let us know how you make out because I assume I will not be able to pre-order if it is not even in the system yet.
AVCrazed 09-06-04, 05:58 PM Folks,
I think that if BB has a 30-day return policy they have no choice but to grant you any current discounts after the fact provided that your purchase is less than 30 days old. The idea is that since you can still return the merchandise, if they deny you the discount, you could very well return the product for a refund and repurchase it at the discounted price. Therefore, giving you the discount upon request will save you and them a lot of trouble. In fact, you should use this argument if they give you any push back. Good luck.
ritewinger 09-06-04, 06:53 PM Never made it to BB, the salesman at Tweeter let me use the BB 10% off coupon when I pre-ordered the WD 52725. I also snuck in on the 2 yrs free financing with Mits, which ends on 9-7-04, tomorrow! HOWEVER, in the computer the 725 will not be in until 10-8-04! That is disappointing to say the least. I did get the 30 day return policy from date of delivery and I can still cancel from now until then if I want. Oh, well, if anyone hears that these sets will be available anywhere else sooner let me know.
BTW, I tried to go to BB but they closed at 6!!

Well, UE is showing them to arrive at their warehouses on 9/14. I plan on checking with my salesman regarding the lens thing, and I think I'll ask him to confirm the arrival date. I'm not sure that I would wait over a month when the differences aren't all that great in the 725 series....

papaduxx 09-06-04, 09:39 PM checked the system today while at work and saw no sign of the xx725yet, but will keep checking.
scott brown 09-06-04, 10:52 PM so my dealer who told me my 725 would be in tomorrow, 9/7, was probably full of sh!t. i'll find out in the morning i guess when i call
I have a CC installed on the Mitsu WD-52525 that is a bit flakey. I am working with TWC to resolve the issues, but the CC needs to be reinitialized occasionally by resetting the 525. Does anyone see a problem with restting the 525 once a day (other than being a pain in the butt)?
TIA....JL

k2,
post or PM me. There is talk on this thread that BB will be getting the 725s, but it's not definite yet. Otherwise, I'd consider trying to force PCR into giving the 30 day return. If you are definite when the time comes maybe we could both try in order to get more leverage. I'd be shocked if PCR did not try to get the $$ by matching the return policy. They are very competitive vs. the local retailers.
Melonhead11 09-07-04, 12:41 PM I was just curious as to what stands you guys were using with the 525. I wasn't to pleased with what I saw for shelf room on the 525/725 matching stand and was hoping there was a better alternative. I did find this one in black that might work for the 725:

EDIT: Oh yeah, I'm looking at the 52" models TV's
MadsenD 09-07-04, 01:20 PM I'm using the matching stand with my 52525. I agree that the shelf space isn't the greatest, although the shelves do extend behind the frame on the sides. The reason I went with the matching frame was because they were giving it to me at 50% off when I bought it with the TV which saved me some money. I don't have a whole lot of components to stick in there yet so it worked out well.

I just bought this for the 62" model:
http://www.bush-furniture-online.com/bush_VS31543.html
I think it's about 58" across. I like it, but it's a pain in the a** to put together.
UMD_Terp 09-07-04, 02:37 PM I am also using the matching stand for my 52525... the bottom is just big enough to hold an XBox, PS2, and a Dreamcast just barely. I would use the upper shelf for a center speaker that would be tilted upwards a bit.

Why don't you have CableCARD? Your cableco is required, by law, to provide you with one upon your request. In my case, it took a month to get it setup with them, but it finally works.
I have a couple of points here...
1. The Moto 6200 is supported by NetCommand as a firewire-connected device. When you plug it in via firewire, NetCommand auto-installs everything for you. You really don't have to do anything. All control codes are passed over the firewire cable and you will not need the IR blasters.
2. Although firewire was active on my Moto 6200, I was never able to get it to complete HDCP handshake with my Mits, so I could never receive encrypted channels through the firewire port. I tried everything: starting the TV first, Moto box first, pulling the cable and resetting the TV, etc. You name the combo, I tried it. I read a very detailed .pdf file on the subject from a tech at my cableco that indicated the problem was likely that the TV HDCP circuits had to be "energized" prior to the STB being turned on. The only way to accomplish this was to turn off the STB, switch to the firewire input on the TV, and then turn on the STB. The problem is, Netcommand auto. turns on the STB when switching to that input. You can't get around it. I even tried pulling the firewire cable, but this auto-removes the STB from the device menu, so you can't even select that input. If you get this working, please post the series of steps that you took to do so. Please include the size and breed of chicken necessary for ritual sacrifice to the TV gods. ;)
3. I will be very surprised if the new Mits PVR will allow you to record anything other than the built-in NTSC or CableCARD tuner. I imagine even HDMI or firewire inputs will be off-limits to the PVR. It will be impossible to pull program data from these inputs, so they won't even include that as an option, I suspect. The only user-friendly option will be the built-in tuners.
rtmoore4 09-07-04, 04:55 PM FYI, there is a new firmware out for this set. It actually does change the software version listed on the TV main menu this time. My version is now V26.004.002.
I do not know what changes have been made since the "reset fix" firmware. Channel changes seem a bit faster now, but other than that, I haven't noticed any real differences. Also, that could be all in my head. Does anyone know what the differences might be?
You know what I just thought of? They may have just re-issued the "reset fix" and changed the sotware rev number on the TV menu this time, because customers like us were complaining about not seeing the software rev number change. That way, they can easily tell while you are on the phone with them if you have the appropriate firmware fix or not.

The Spec sheet for the 825 says, in part, under "PVR Features":
"Digitally Record from FireWire MPEG2 Devices"
and
"Digitally Playback to FireWire MPEG2 Devices"
and also digitally record OTA digital and analog signals and S-video
