I have a question about my 62" Mitsu DLP...When I put the tv in standard display mode and put a widescreeen DVD in (1.85:1 ratio), the picture is distorted and I get black bars. Any ideas? The dvd player is set to 16:9. Not sure if I am missing a setting. The only way I can get it to look right is to put the tv in narrow mode. 2.35:1 DVDs, such as LOTR Return of the King look fine...

RTMoore...When did you get your new firmware, I am expecting my replacement 525 tommorrow, and am expecting that it doesnt have the new FW......I got my FW card about 2 weeks ago, so it must be really new.

Curious How long is it now taking to change HD channels OTA ans is it similar to the channel changes when in PIP mode??

Actually, they contacted me. My cableco and Mitsu were pointing fingers at each other over the CC issue, so my cableco called Mitsu on my behalf and they contacted me. The guy I spoke with went through some troubleshooting steps with me and indicated that he didn't think the new firmware would solve my problem (but he agreed to send it anyway, just in case). He thought my problem was just an authorization issue with the cableco (and he turned out to be right). There may be some CC fixes in the new firmware, but I didn't need them, as I was able to get the CC working prior to applying the second firmware upgrade.

I had already received and applied the first update. I would call Mitsu back and ask for the latest firmware (004.002) if you are still having problems. Oh yeah, and if you do, ask them what it fixes (if they will tell you).

Technik, They sent it out just this past Fri.

Don't know if this has been stated before, but I spoke with a Mitsu rep tonight at a local function. I was complaining to him about the glare on the 525 series and he said that later this year still, Mitsu will be selling a trim kit for the 525 for those that choose to remove the protective (glare) shield. It will be black and supposed to fit into place where the holes from the protective screen come out of. He said it would be $60.

That's good to know. I took the screen off for the first time yesterday and liked the PQ better. I was going to fashion a decorative bezel to cover the trim but will now wait for this.

Hmmm. I was going to post this in the HDTV Recorders forum but will also post here. I bought a Mits HD2000U VCR and neither I nor my dealer has been able to get it to work *at all* with this set over firewire. Only thing that works is when a prerecorded VHS tape is played over composite. When firewire is connected, the 525 sees it, but I'm unable to get the VCR menu to display (i can over composite), and anytime I record HD I get a copy protection error......regardless of channel or content. Since others locally can record from their STB to a DVCR (no STB here, just CC), it's not a 5C issue.......or is it? I think it's more a communication problem between the Mitses. Maybe this new firmware fixes it. Looks like a call to support is in order.

All control codes are passed over the firewire cable and you will not need the IR blasters. Because a) I don't have any firewire recording devices, and b) the Mits does not remember video settings for firewire input, I have yanked the firewire cable. Just using component video now from the 6200 to the TV. I have the DVI-to-HDMI also connected, but I don't see any improvement in the picture over component at 720p. I've also hooked up the IR blasters and this seems to work OK. Had to teach NetCommand the 6200 remote keys because they had built in the codes for an older Motorola cable box and some functionality wasn't there - I just can't remember what it was now.

Local Ken Crane's was offering no California sales tax (8.25% off) for the Labor Day weekend, so I ordered the 62725 and stand with free delivery. I guess I can still wheel and deal with Best Buy and Good Guys until delivery. The scheduled in-store arrival is 9/23. My baby needs a home.

After reading this I thought I'd go and check my version and sure enough it is V26.004.002. I received my flash cartridge last Wednesday or Thursday. I haven't noticed any real differences other than the "reset" problem fix. As said earlier, Mits may have just finally rev'd the version number to be able to determine whether the set has the fix applied or not. I wasn't having problems with anything else earlier and am not using a CableCard so I don't know whether the firmware will help with those problems or not.

Do this:

Tune to the channel you wish to record... Hit the Device Menu and the menu for the cablecard should come up. Select the 'Conditional Access' menu. Look at the bottom-most field in the listing... it should be two bits... What are those bits set to?

Just popped in SW AoTC DVD and there is NO tilt.....bars are even....thats good....also channels due seem to change a bit faster.. takes about 2.5 - 3 sec to change HD OTA channels....

Comcast is coming out today to give me an HD STB and install a CC.

I've got Netcommand setup to control my Denon Receiver, Sony DVD and VCR. However, I've noticed that although Netcommand can learn various remote code actions like skipping to the next chapter when the DVD is playing, I've not learned how to actually use the Mits TV remote to execute this function while the DVD is playing. Anyone know how to do this?

Today all I can do is press play, rewind, fast forward and pause. I'd like to use the other remote commands like skip forward & backward, main menu, etc.?

Thanks

I'm seeing 3 seconds for HD OTA channel changes, for what it's worth.

delar & UMD_TERP:
From what I see on my 52525, the menus are CableCARD specific. I believe that the "DEVICE MENU" activates a card reader and reads the contents of the inserted CC. Delar and I both subscribe to TWC and have SA CCs. When we press "DEVICE MENU", we get two (2) selections: "SA CAbleCARD Diag Screen" and "SA CableCARD/Host ID Screen." Both are informational screens only.

I've ordered the "new" software from Mitsu and I hope they have enough common sense to send V26.00.4.02. I want to see if the CC issues are resolved with this before I go back to TWC.

Well, it seems that issues with recording digital over firewire are the same for me. I just got my HD2000 D-VCR and I am unable to record digital programs. The VCR just gives me a 'CP-Error' and shuts down. It may be that the cable company does not have their 5C flags set correctly, but it may also be a cablecard issue as well. I am going to see if I can try to get an OTA signal and record that to it to see if that works.

UMD_Terp

BTW, my local dealer said that they will check with their head office to see if I can just pay the difference to get a 725... it all depends on if the 725 will be available before the end of the month or not. They are saying that it is looking like the 725 will be available by the end of September unless Mitsubishi runs into unforseen manufacturing problems.

I may just go ahead and ask for the second firmware update to see if it helps with my D-VCR issues regardless...

Hi all,

I posted this in the Home Theater General area but have only rec'd one (very much appreciated) reply, so far. Thought I'd post it over here since some others in this thread might benefit from the info, too.

I have my first big screen HDTV coming soon...a Mitsu WD-62725. I'll be hooking up an Onkyo TX-DS797 receiver and DVD changer (I'll look at a HDMI/DVI model later on), two ReplayTVs, and an Xbox to it, to start. That's not counting cable/OTA, etc. I plan on running component cables from the DVD player and the Xbox to the receiver with component out to the TV, and S-Video from the Replays to the receiver and from the receiver to the TV. I'll use Toslink for audio wherever possible, and I think I'll probably need one digital coax for the audio out on the TV.

Anyway, first I'd like to know if this sounds like a reasonable setup. Second, when watching OTA, do you run the audio out from the TV to the receiver to utilize it? I feel like that might be a stupid question, but I haven't used an antenna in....well, more or less forever!

My last question has probably been beaten to death, and I did search, but I didn't find anything directly on point. I know it has got to be out there, but I just couldn't find it... Anyway, I already have a good number of my cables but will be purchasing a few, mostly the component video cables. I have read posts over time that tell you that Monster cables are extremely overpriced. I don't doubt that they are good cables (I have quite a few of them in my audio setup), but if I can get a quality component cable from Ram Electronics for $32.95 or Pacific Cable for only $10, I would prefer not spending $100 for Monster. I also saw someone's post regarding a seller on Ebay that I checked out, hdtvsupply, and while I cringed a little at the thought of buying cables on Ebay, his stuff sounds good and his feedback rating is strong. His Xbox cables sounded pretty good for you fellow gamers out there....

I don't sweat over digital cables that much...I have some Toslink cables that I purchased at a very reasonable price from partsexpress.com that I am quite happy with. On the analog side, though, I am a bit more concerned. I don't want to hamstring my new TV with bad cables, but again, I don't want to go crazy on the spending for them if it isn't warranted. If any of you folks with more experience in this than me would be willing to weigh in on the subject, I'd appreciate it....

Thanks,
Randy

Randy,

My setup is very similar to yours, except I don't have the ReplayTVs. Since those units are for standard definition recording, I think SVideo is fine on them. Anything from an HD or DVD source I would use component or DVI/HDMI.

About component video cables... While I do believe there are measurable performance differences between a $40 component video cable and a $400 dollar one, I think you hit diminishing returns after the $60 price point (for typical 2 meter cables). That said, I think Monster is way overpriced for what you get. They have multiple "lines" at different price points. Personally, I doubt you will ever see any difference between them, so go for the least expensive line. Just don't use the el cheapo skinny cables under $20. You will probably notice a difference between those and the Monsters or equivalent.

I agree with you in the digital space, don't buy into the cable hype. You don't see the Monster hype on IDE cables to improve the quality of your PC's data.... ;)

I swear Monster was created by a marketing genius for retailers to make up some profit margin they don't get on the main equipment. Kinda like when you buy that new car and the finance guy with the cigar in the tiny back room starts grilling you on the extended warranty, corrosion protection, fabric protector, etc....

In making analog connections to the HD2000U VCR, I noticed the following...

The TV Video/Audio outputs are connected to the VCR Video/Audio inputs. Video is composite...

The output of the VCR is connected using S-Video out from the VCR into the S-Video on Input-1. Audio cables are also connected between Input-1 and the VCR output.

When switching to the VCR input on the TV and setting the VCR to the Line input 1, I get a wierd tone of audio noise and video noise for a split second that then changes to a blue screen... this continues repeatedly with the blue screen alternating between video noise. When I play or record (analog) all is fine. Is there some loop effect I am seeing by trying to view the input and output simultaneously without applying a signal to either end... it goes away if I change the VCR to the other line level input or the tuner.

Just got a 62525 delivered today, I'm happy with the picture and all but have two questions (probably newbie/uninformed ones ;) )

1) It has an OTA HDTV tuner correct? I noticed it was showing "480i" and still doing letterboxed "bars" on the picture even though the TV is widescreen and the program was, presumably, Hi-Def. Any advice? Do I need to enable/change something?

2) On one show I was kinda getting a green "fringe" around some people's faces and stuff. I recall seeing a thread about the problem but cannot find it again. Is this normal? Can I fix it?

Other then those two things I'm quite happy with the purchase. :D

At least in my area, the HD channels generally have two sub-channels, like 32.1 and 32.2. The .1 is usually the HD channel, and the .2 is usually the SD version retransmitted using the same digital transmission method as HDTV. Oh, and technically, you were seeing "pillarboxed". Letterboxed is black bars on the top/bottom. Pillarbox is black bars on the sides. You will find that many of the local broadcasters just retransmit their regular 4:3 video on the digital "HD" channel, so you see the pillarboxes.

Yes, there have been sightings of that phenomenon, and I don't feel it has been adequately explained. I asked my service technician about it, and his response was that it was normal on NTSC broadcasts (he called it "red shift") and more prevalent on high def televisions. Not sure I buy that, but there it is.

MrBlud:
Welcome to the club. I assume you have an indoor or outdoor VHF antenna because you are receiving SD OTA channels. To get HD OTA channels you will need an UHF antenna because that is where the HD signals are carried. Most TV antennas have both VHF & UHF, so the next step is to read the Mitsu owner's manual. The section you need to read refers to setting up ANT1/2. Setting up the tuner via the ANT settings is the only way the Mitsu can seek out the OTA HD channels. It is not a plug & play process so reading the manual is the only way to do the process correctly.

Here do you live? That would help in answering your question about local OTA HD availability. I would also look here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=45 to see if your city is listed.

Hope this helps...JL

I am not sure that you were actually watching the digital broadcast if the info showed 480i. That would lead me to believe that you were watching an analog broadcast... As a matter of fact, I am not in fron tof the TV right now, but I was thinking that you would only see the 480i/480p/720p/1080i indicators if you are watching thru one of the TV's inputs. When I see digital channels on my cable feed, it says either "HD 16:9 or SD 4:3", and some of the audio info. I can't remember what it says for OTA viewing, but I don't remember seeing anything like 480i/480p/720p/1080i except for the possible exception of an analog OTA channel (or maybe cable channels as well). I could be all wet here...so please correct me if I am wrong!

I agree that he should run the scan for channels and see if any digitals show up (indicated by the "-X" where X is the subchannel number). Pick the device according to what the antenna feed is hooked to, and then go to "TV menu" -> "Antenna" -> arrow over the the "memorize" button next to "Air" and push "enter". I would suggest making sure that "prefer digital" is NOT checked...Then just let it scan all the analog and digital channels.

The marketing spin on A/C conditioners will show you a trace of a noisy A/C signal source both with & without the conditioner. What they don't tell you is it either scenario makes NO difference on most of the components that are running from that A/C circuit. The internal power supply of your components will convert AC current into DC current to run it's internals; that DC has lots of good filtering to keep the DC clean.

That said, there are some people who swear they see and/or hear big differences with power conditioning vs. without. IMHO, unless they had some really unusual and excessive A/C noise issues, the improvement is highly subjective at best and worst case delusional. Such discussions usually turn into arguing religion.

I've seen video noise on my TV when running my microwave or vacumn cleaner so I do think that AC noise can impact the reproduction of your video sources. I've also been in bands working with high output loudspeaker systems... a clean power source did make for less noise in the audio signal.

There is also the claim that it will prolong the life of your equipment... I don't know if it will or not... I'm no electrical engineer but it seems logical to me that noise isn't a good thing for electronics.

So yes, I think they are a good idea but I think it only makes sense to buy something that is well matched to your components. It's silly to spend $500 on a power center for a $1000 TV. 5% or less of the total system cost is probably a good target in most cases.

Your microwave probably has more more RF emissions than noise emissions on the A/C circuit. All the A/C filtering in the world isn't going to help with RF emissions. But I will concede that laser printers, microwaves, and fax machines/copiers, and refrigerators are some of the worst sources of noise on an A/C line.

Anything with a motor (vaccum, furnace, washer, dryer, etc) are generally a tremendous source of noise on the A/C line. If severe enough, I have no doubt it can have an effect on either video or audio.

For my own situation, rather than spend $$ on a conditioner, I find it usually makes more sense to just not run the washer/dryer or vaccum if I want to watch my home theater...;)

BTW, we're obviously drifting off topic. If someone wants to continue, lets start another thread.

I saw a few posts in here regarding the loss of signal for the HDMI port. Has anyone else experienced this yet??

I have a sci atl 3250 from comcast...got it yesterday. It has a DVI port, which I have attached a monster DVI-HDMI cable. Worked fine yesterday, got up this morn, and had nothing but static. I pulled the HDMI cable out of the back of the Mits, the reinserted, and the picture came back up. WTF????? Think I might go back to using component if I cant figure it out.

Funny you should mention the Scientific Atlanta 3250HD box. I have a Sony GWIII, but the SA box turns off and resets about 5 minutes after I turn off the TV. Have any of you experienced this?

Thanks,

It did it this morning, and none of them seem to have anything shown. I did notice that it asked if the lamp was changed when I turned it on...I suspect that these are the scrambled digital channels that I have access to. I also noticed that when I go to charter.com, I see the NBC and ABC HD channels are listed in the "HD lifeline", while the ones like ESPNHD and Discovery HD are in the HD tier. Could this be why I can get them (lifeline = free?)?

I also find that sometimes when I turn it off, when I turn it back on it is on a channel that I never watch...

I have applied the firmware fix...

Just an update...

It occurred to me that my cable signal may be weak (since I started getting intermittent reception of my "free" HD channels), so I just installed a CM 3044 distribution amp for the cable system, and so far, reception of my cable HD channels has been solid. I was splitting the cable 3 ways where it came in the house, and then AGAIN behind the TV to feed my Tivo and the TV (and the DVDR, but the DVDR has a passthru, and the passthru was what was going to the TV's cable input). Now I have the amp in place, and the 2 way splitter behind the TV was feeding the TV and the DVDR, and the passthru from the DVDR goes to the Tivo (since I rarely record Cable on the Tivo - usually record off Dish Network...).

Anyway, my analog cable looks noticably better on the TV, and as I said before, the HD channels haven't pixellated yet (in the short time my wife let me check them out before she watched Queer Eye).

Moral of this story (which most of you probably knew already) is that a weak cable signal can = poor/no digital HD cable reception.

Thanks,
Jeff

Is anyone else having this problem and will a DVI to HDMI cable improve the quality?

I am not sure what you are talking about...

I am not familiar with a Denon 2803 but I am thinking it is an audio receiver...

Are you watching HD with component video cables? And SD with a composite or video or S-video connection?

Is the game that you are referring to the Colts/Patriots game? Are you switching from SD to HD as you watch the game or switching channels? Are you watching HD with the TV's tuners? Is SD coming from the DirectTV receiver? Or from analog cable? Sorry for all of these questions, but it is difficult to answer your questions without some clarification.

I personally think that the HD AND SD pictures on this TV are GREAT! HD is Specatcular and SD is much better than the SD content I have seen shown in some stores. I just installed a distribution amp and I think analog cable looks very good now.

Thanks,
Jeff

I think I spoke to the same CSR as you today. I asked to have the latest firmware update sent to me and he said that there is no general firmware update but there may be a firmware update for a particular problem you're having (i.e. reset, CableCARD, etc.) He also said that each particular update you receive only addresses the problem you called for. In other words, the CableCARD update *will not* fix the reset problem. Does this make sense to anyone?

Anyway, I told him I was having a CableCARD problem and he said he'd get me the firmware update for that, so we'll see. I then asked him if there was an update for a problem I'm having with the connection betwen my Mits DVCR and the 52525 and he said to call a service tech. :(

He was a bit short with me, probably because he was fielding calls from the likes of us all day

Cablecard woes!
I was pleased when the cablecard worked with my 52525. I then upgraded to the 62525 and called Cablevision to "re-install" the cablecard into the 62525. Well, they sent someone who has never done this before. Sparing all the details, he left me with a cablecard that did not work, and simultaneously their HQ somehow managed to take away some (but not all) digital channels, the ones 1xx (here in Northern NJ). To their credit, Cablevision did call back to see if I was "satisfied" with the cablecard. I explained that they need to send someone, preferably the same tech who installed it in the first place. He showed up today, and wee went through the whole thing. He managed to get the cablecard working, but the 1XX channels are still not working (I can tell since I still have the HD SA cable box). After a lengthy discussion with their HQ, he informed me that there seems to be a much bigger problem with cablecards here (with other TVs too; he told me that I am the only one with a Mitsubishi), where only two of the 7XX digital channels are working WITH ANY cablecard now, and none of the 1XX channels (except 100 the guide) too. Bizarre! I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this. And to top it off, this tech is going on vacation (he did give me his manager's number, though). So here is the situation.

HD SA box: receive all analog, HD version of basic channels, some digital channels, but not 1XX
Cablecard: receive all analog, no HD version except the PBS HD (713, 732), no digital channels, no 1XX

Ugh !!

If you haven't done so already, call (949) 830-8364 and tell them you are having CableCARD woes and you would like to get the firmware upgrade for the problem. But if this set is an August build then you may already have the upgraded FW. Give it a shot anyway. More than likely your cable co. screwed something up. This is the *exact* reason why I want to keep my 52525 and get that darn tilt fixed. My CC works relatively well (but no music channels) and I want nobody touching nothing.

Newsflash......

For the first time I just experienced the problem someone here (spiff72?) had with his CableCARD. No encrypted channels until I reinitialized the CC (unplug and plug in tv). While I got them all back, it also added all the channels I had manually removed and all the channel names I entered are gone.

Hopefully, this is what the second firmware upgrade corrects.

Thanks for the updates... I would love to see the tech that is coming on Tuesday to make the D-VCR work, but I will go out on a limb and say that he will not have any success with it. The vcr does not see the TV properly plain and simple. Anyhow, I will call Mitsubishi again and ask for the cablecard update... hopefulyl this time I get someone who is willing to listen...

From a development standpoint, it makes no sense to have fixes for each problem alone. I can't imagine developing firmware like that. This is a unified system and I can't imagine them packaging up fixes like that. The firmware update they send to you is the whole thing... not just part of the firmware. Any previous fixes should be part of any new fixes. The TV reinitializes its EEPROM with the entire contents of the firmware on the flash card. I really doubt that it would be worthwhile to issue a fix and have it only fix that specific problem... not only that, I don't know if it is feasible to go in and overwrite specific portions of a EEPROM or flash... I don't claim to know what exactly they are doing with firmware, but I am an electrical engineer for the better part of each day :)

I don't have a cablecard, but I did have channels that would mysteriously appear in the "guide" after the TV had been turned on following an overnite shutdown. I only subscribe to basic cable, but I appear to get "expanded basic" from Charter, and the digital HD channels as well (just ABC and NBC).

Not sure if that is what you were referring to...

delar & Vijay K:
I am the one who has been experiencing the CC issues with TWC-NYC. The unencrypted channels are received 100% of the time, but channels that require "decoding" are problematic. There are times when all the channels are received and times when only the unencrypted stations (SD & HD) are received. When the 52525 is reset and the CC reinitialized, all the channels are received with no problems. I have an SA 8000HD DVR using the same cable feed connected to the 52525 and it receives all the subscribed channels all the time.

In the past 10 days I've spent a lot of time on the Mitsu/CC/TWC issue and I've concluded the root of my problem is the Mitsu. The proper signal is being sent by TWC because the HD-DVR works 100% of the time and when the CC does work, the same channels are received. I believe the Mitsu firmware cannot handle the decoding process efficiently and once it gets screwed up, the only way to clear it up is to "reboot" the system. I've been in DP/IT for 26 years and all the symptoms point to the Mitsu and its processing of the CC signal. I am hoping Mitsu has addressed the problem the new FW, but only time will tell.

Regards....JL

delar and JL,
Thanks for the helpful advice. I shall check the mfg. date and firmware. In my case at least, I cannot yet attribute this to Mits. ALONE because when the CC was installed on the 52525 all channels that i got on the box were also available using CC (analog, digital - HD and non-HD and Music). However, since I did not have the CC in for long ( just 2 days before I switched), I am not sure because now I have a different set, and the cable co has changed something (as seen by the changes when using the box).

The DirecTV set up should be no different than a cable STB. The set up will be dependent on what output connectors you have on the DTV box. Go to the Mitsu owner's manual referenced in the post to see what your options are.

Ok.. so I spoke to another Mitsubishi CSR and there is a software fix for the cablecard. You apparantly have to sign and fax back another license agreement for this update as well...

The guy is going to fax it to me now... I am hoping this has some impact on getting my D-VCR to work. The only cablecard issues I have are with the music channels not being accessible... and of course the cablecard -> D-VCR thing...

delar

I would think that Mitsubishi would have tried to connect the 525 and their D-VCR's at some point in the testing phase, so they must be aware of the problem. Also, it's not really a CableCARD related problem because (I believe) my dealer tried to record HD OTA and it still didn't work. Let's just hope the fix can be accomplished through firmware.

For me, one of the main reasons for buying this set was the CC->525->2000U connectivity, so I'm bumming big time.

Edit: I'm very curious to see how HTBruceM's light engine replacement went today

Actually in the manual it states that the only devices that were available for recording over firewire at the time the manual was written were the Mits. and JVC D-VHS recorders and they are the only ones they say will work... funny, isn't it :)

Omega 379. You were watching the game in expanded-plus mode. That is why things were straight in the middle and curved on the edges. What you need to do is change your video display mode, until you see it in direct mode. (I think its the "picture" button that changes the display mode you are in) There are several different processing modes available. Each is meant to do different things to the picture you are watching. Most of these modes are made to convert 4:3 images into 16:9 for your viewing pleasure. The expanded plus will keep the middle at about 4:3 scale, and expand the edges of the image so that it fills the rest of the picture. Yes in that particular mode (expanded or expanded plus) the image will appear distorted. An HDMI cable has definitely helped my DVD viewing, so more than likely you will notice some benefit going from component video to the HDMI input (via a DVI to HDMI cable).

BTW. I am seriously having the "green hue" problem. Has anyone else managed to procure a fix for this problem? Is it a light engine design problem, or a setting problem? Is there a firmware upgrade for this?
I watched "The Matrix Revolution" (which granted has a green tint in the movie) as well as "The Return of the King." In both instances there was that awful green shadow. I have tweaked and re-tweaked the TV to no avail. Ever since I mentioned this problem to my wife, she has beat me over the head with it every time she sees it. (I never should have mentioned it is the bottom line, but It's too noticeable and she would have figured it out eventually regardless) Any advice or help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

Good call on the mode problem for Omega379. After you said that and I re-read his post, it makes perfect sense. All I know is that mode looks ridiculous, and I don't know why anyone would ever watch in that mode by choice! The "Format" button is the one that you want to push on the remote to cycle through the available options. I like to watch the 4:3 SD content in the "Narrow" mode if I am in the mood to watch pillarboxed, or in the mode right after that one in the sequence (can't remember the name of it) where it stretches the picture uniformly in the horizontal direction to fill the screen...

Stretch-Plus is proabably the best stretch mode... with the only downside that you lose a little bit of the top and bottom of the screen.

A couple of points here:

The people we talk to when we call in are not engineers. They are just front-line phone support. They can't even transfer you to an engineer or someone higher up the food chain. Mitsu just doesn't work that way, apparently. If you really want any serious information/help, the only way to get it is to call your service technician, who can then call engineering and get whatever it is you need. BTW, that makes this board all the more valuable.

On the CC firmware update, there are at least two versions of firmware out there. One of them does not update your software version number on the main TV menu. This one is what we refer to as the "reset fix". The second firmware update does increment the software version number to V26 004.02. I can only surmise this is the one Mitsu is calling the "CC fix".

The phone support guy is being misleading when he says each firmware is designed to fix a specific problem. The "reset fix" code IS included in the "CC fix" code, but not the other way around. I'm shocked that Mitsu is taking the point of view that they will only give the customer exactly what they need and no more. If the customer wants the latest and greatest RELEASED and SUPPORTED version of code (currently the "CC fix"), then they should just give it to them. Actually, now that I think about it, the customer shouldn't even have to ask. If they are having the "reset" problem, Mitsu should just send them the latest code, even though it has fixes for things the customer is not having problems with...YET. Otherwise, they will just be forced to send them another update when the customer ends up having that problem later on. Come on Mitsu, it's all about saving money and being efficient, right?

Vijay,

I had this EXACT problem for a full month before I finally was able to work with the right support person at TWC-Houston to get this worked out. The main problem you have right now (you actually have two) is that the cablecard is not authorized. I can tell because you are receiving all of the unencrypted channels, but not any of the encrypted channels through the CC. The QAM tuner in the set is doing it's job, but the CC is showing you as not authorized for all of the encrypted channels. You are receiving all channels (except for 1xx) through your STB, though, so I know it's not a systemic problem. This could be due to a number of factors as follows:

1. Cablevision is still trying to use your old CC numbers. When you switch TVs, your CC should have generated a new series of numbers to give to the cableco.
2. Cablevision has mistyped one of the numbers.

The fix for both 1 & 2 is to get someone from Cablevision to read you back the three series of numbers they are using to authorize the CC and compare them against what your 62525 says in the CC menu (you can reach this by pressing the "Device Menu" button on your remote while on the CC input).

3. You need to update the Mitsu with the "CC fix" firmware.
4. You need to work interactively with Cablevision to get your card to accept the authorization hit. This was MY fix, btw. What I mean by this is to rest the TV after inserting the CC. Have your cableco send an authorization hit. Then reset the TV again. Have them resend the authorization hit. This was the only way to get my TV working. Disclaimer: I do not truly think that all of the resets were probably strictly necessary, but this was the final answer to my CC authorization problems. I was even able to get the CC working without the "CC fix", although I did apply it later that day.

BTW, based on the fact that you were working with your 52525, I'm betting on item 1 or 2 being your CC problem.

The second problem you have is a systemic problem. You aren't receiving the 1xx channels. This is likely due to the fact Cablevision has your account set up incorrectly. They don't have your account authorized for these channels. They may have you in the wrong tier. This doesn't have anything to do with the CC, though.

It could be, delar. I didn't run a working CC without the "CC fix" long enough to experience any authorization dropping issues.

I'm confused about a couple of things, though. I don't think you can manually remove channels from the CC lineup. Those are set by the cableco, and I'm not aware of any way you can take them out. I don't think you can add channel names to the CC lineup, either, though I'm a little less certain of this than my first point. If I'm wrong, please tell us how you did it.

Could you maybe be talking about your OTA input? You can manually remove channels from it, and it's possible the total power loss scenario (unplug TV instead of reset button) you described would have brought them back.

Based on delar's comments and my experience, it sounds like this is exactly the problem the new firmware is designed to solve. I've been running an authorized CC now for 7 days on the newest firmware, and I have never had a problem like this. How often is this happening to you?

rtmoore4:
My described CC problem has been present since the CC was installed on 8/14/2004. I've been working with TWC-NYC and they replaced the original CC to see if it would resolve the problem. The second CC seems to be more stable, but as I stated earlier, I believe the Mitsu firmware (V26.00.4.01) is suspect. The CC is authorized properly and it performs as it should when it does work. I've gotten into the habit of resetting the 52525 once a day, usually before a long session of TV viewing.

I agree with you that Vijay K's CC has not been authorized. Someone has to verify the CC's Serial #, MAC address and the xx525's HOST ID are correctly entered in the cableco's system. If any one of these three are incorrect, the CC will not be "authorized." I think Cablevision didn't bother to change Vijay's HOST ID and the system still has the 52525 HOST ID, not the 62525's HOST ID.

BTW, I've concluded that any modifications you make to the CC via TV Menu/Setup (add/delete channels, rename, SQV) are wiped out when you "reset" the TV. It appears CC mods are not "written" to a specific file, but only resides in "memory" so any reset/reboot is going to wipe them out. Until I get a CC that operates 100%, I am not going to bother customizing the CC.

On the firmware fix, after 3 days all seems great, tuner is more stable and NO reset probs, as well as no longer getting the lamp replcament message at boot.

I was in a mom and pop home theater store in the Maryland area today, the name escapes me, and the salesman told me that Mistu just announced a bezel that can purchased for those 525 owners who have removed the glare screen. This sounds like the finishing kit you were looking for. I should have pressed him for more information but I didnt. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

I speak of the channel add/remove/rename function in the tv menu. It's not related to CC specifically, but rather to the Mits tuner.

Doh!! I spoke too soon. I just had one this morning. Turned the TV on, and no digital channels, and I mean NO digital channels, not even the unencrypted ones. Checking the CC 'Conditional Access' screen showed, "State: Unknown". It usually says 'Subscribed' or 'Not Subscribed'. Upon reset, I got the 'CableCARD initialization complete' message. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, SRFast, but it looks like the V26 004.02 firmware does NOT fix this problem. This really makes me question even more what the .02 firmware does do.

I was so wrong about this. Thanks for setting me straight, delar. I see now that you can do this. I thought that once you used the CC, the only thing you could do to it was through the CC menu, but I see that the TV tuner menu still allows you to do things there as well.

Question: The 002 firmware that you speak about... was it obtained after asking for the cablecard fix specifically? I think that there actually may be another rev beyond 002... 002 might just be the reset fix rebadged with the updated rev. I faxed another license agreement back to Mits Friday so I will call them Monday to see if they have it. I asked for the CC fix specifically, so I wonder what firmware update rev I really get.

Not from my cable card though :p

I hooked up a coax cable to my ANT-2 input and was just barely recieving digital NBC without any antena. They had the Michigan - Notre Dame game on, but not in HD :( ... anyhow, I connected to the VCR through netcommand and set up a recording. VCR fired up automatically and was able to successfully record without any errors besides the occasional dropouts caused by the weak OTA signal. The recording played back perfectly. I am going to try an HD recording from the OTA source to see how that goes next. As it is, I can barely get NBC and ABC digital. I have a feeling it will work just fine.

So given this, I am led to believe there is either an issue with the cablecard -> firewire transport in the TV or there is a copy protection issue with my cable company. The copy protection issue makes less sense because the D-VCR acts just plain flaky with the cablecard set as the source. The digital connection is at times just lost or the connection is never established. When it does work, I always get a copy protection error. The connection from an OTA digital source to firewire seems solid. No connection dropouts or flaky behavior at all.

Just for reference, I am using a Mitsubishi HD2000-U D-VCR. I have found it to be a very good analog VCR when hooked up through S-Video and if I can get it working with the cablecard, it will surely be a very nice piece of gear...

Hmmm, this is interesting. I haven't actually tried that yet because I have severe multipath issues. My dealer said he tried unsuccessfully to do just this so I didn't bother. It could be he tried recording HD OTA and *that* didn't work. Let us know what you come up with. He also had me convinced that the 2000U and 525 aren't talking via firewire because he was unable to get the VCR menu to come up on the 525 when the input is switched to the D-VCR IEEE1394 connection (he *was* able to get the VCR menu to display over firewire on another brand name tv). Now that you've shown it does record and play over firewire using the OTA tuner we can deduce the problem is somewhere in the Mits tuner or the CC.

I'm even more anxious to keep this D-VCR because my dealer said he'd give me $100 credit if I decide not to return it. If it does indeed play back HD over firewire okay then I might opt for a firewire enabled STB from my cable co. until this CableCARD issue (if it is one) is resolved.

Edit: Maybe *this* is what the CC 'fix' corrects. My anticipation grows. :)

We (UE) have the arrival date in our system of the 52725 on 9/20... I don't remember the exact date of the 62725 but it wasn't more than a week or two behind the 52.

This is the date Mits is supposed to deliver these to our warehouse... UE stores should see them within 3 to 4 days of their arrival.

I'm not sure this is the proper thread for this, but , here it comes anyway. My wife and I just bought the WD52525 and it will be delivered this Wed. This is our first big screen purchase, so, we're a little nervous.

Is there anything special to do when turning the set on for the very first time? Could someone list some suggestions for tweaking say color, contrast, etc especially if they've had it calibrated?

BTW, we have Directv, so, if anyone else who owns this set and has Directv, please give us any helpful advice since we are newbies to the home theater experience.

I was able to successfully record 20 minutes of NBC in HD last night and it was perfect. Playback was just fine. However, there is no VCR menu over the firewire connection. If there is supposed to be, then something else is amiss. I just get the TV's transport menu for FF/REW/PLAY/etc... I think overall there are some issues with the 525 - HD2000U link that can probably be addressed, but gross functionality in terms of recording and playback is fine. Maybe Mitsubishi never was able to test the thing with a cablecard and that is the main problem. I do think that if you were to take a D-VHS tape, it would play back with no issues.

Well, thanks to you people I finally got HDTV reception (it's GREAT!)

Thanks for your help :D

But I seem to be having another problem. I haver DirecTV and hooked it up. The picture was pretty good, not as crisp as HD of course, but still very good.

Then last night I got some kind of "distortion" over the picture that makes it practically unwatchable. The picture looks like it's a fifth generation VHS tape running in EP. It only happens on the SAT input (ANT 2) and I've hooked the Sat receiver into a different TV and the picture is like it used to be.

Any idea what I screwed up and how I can fix it?

What source are you seeing the vertical lines on? Internal tuner or an external source? If it is an external source, is it an HD source? I have noticed vertical lines on the picture if I watch the component video feed from my dish network 811 receiver in 720p mode. It looks better if I switch the output from the dish 811 to 1080i. Seems odd since the native resolution of the TV should be 720p...Maybe it has something to so with the source feed being 720p or 1080i.

Hope this helps.

It occurred to me that I never did post an update describing how my problem was resolved. The original problem was described here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=4288009#post4288009)

Long story short, I had my set replaced by Myer Emco one day after calling them (I was still in the 30 days, no questions asked period. great policy. great service) and have been problem free since. Mitsubishi engineers never did call me to try and troubleshoot the problem with the set I had replaced, so I'll never know what happened.

The new set has July 2004 manufacture date. As far as tilt is concerned, if there is any, it is a lot less apparent then my first set which had some tilt when comparing the top left and top right. Honestly, I'm not sure I even would care at all about any perceived tilt if it hadn't been brought up on the forum. Even on my first set, it really did not diminish my enjoyment of the set at all.

FYI, last week I did order, receive, and apply the firmware update on my new 52525. No reset issues.

Even with the first bad set, I have to say that I'm very, very satisfied with my Mits purchase. I am still amazed by the PQ every time I find good High Def content. In fact, I sometimes find myself watching programs I'd never watch before simply because they look so spectacular. The down side is that it's very disappointing to watch non-HD content, particularly sporting events which until game time, you may not know if they are going to appear in HD. [Note to NBC: The Michigan vs Notre Dame game deserves to be shown in High Def. If ESPN can do it for many lesser games, can't you figure it out? Please!]

So is DefinEdge supposed to turn itself back ON all the time or not? What is the expected behavior?

The manual says the default setting is ON. But it also says you have a distint memory for video settings on each device/input. The two statements seem to contradict.

I could swear my old 52525 (was replaced for the "tilt" issue) did remember the DefinEdge setting per device/input. But the replacement set always reverts back to DefinEdge=ON when switching between devices/inputs.

Anybody else seeing different behavior?

I watched "The Matrix Revolution" (which granted has a green tint in the movie) as well as "The Return of the King." In both instances there was that awful green shadow. I have tweaked and re-tweaked the TV to no avail. PHarding,
The service tech who looked at my previous WD-52525 told me the green outline is expected to some degree on all digital sets. Don't know if I buy that or not.

After I got a replacement WD-52525 (for the tilt issue), the green outline is barely noticeable. That suggests to me there is some variability in the Mits design because not all of them exhibit the symptom to the same degree.

On my previous set, the green outline was highly dependent on the video images and colors. Certain images looked fine, others showed the green outline clearly. It was always on the LEFT side of sharp color changes. I saw it a lot on CNN Headline News; a blond anchor woman appears on the right, and she is in front of a dark blue background. The whole left side of her face and hair had a green outline.

Does this describe your symptom?

From what I have seen, I don't think you can expect to do much better than 10% off the MAP. I believe one person said they got 12.5%, but people seemed to think that was an exceptional deal. I bought my 62725 from UE (it's supposed to hit their warehouse on the 14th, but from what I keep reading here I am a bit skeptical on that date), and I got 10% off over Labor Day weekend. HTBruce,

Well, I'm not so sure that my problem is just on the left side of the image. I will be sure to look into it this evening when I get home. I'm seeing the problem no matter what signal I'm looking at... DVD, Cable, OTA HDTV etc. Mind you, it is a very rare phenomenon, but I'm afraid that now I'm so aware of it, that I look for it to happen.

The green "hue" is definitely image dependent. It was most noticeable in dark scenes (The Matrix Revolution, The Return of the King, The Last Samurai) around peoples faces. The first scene of The Matrix Revolution where Neo is stuck inside the train station talking to the Indian family comes to mind as a scene where it was quite noticeable. If anyone else has this movie, please check it out and tell me if you see this problem.

Despite this minor problem, the TV is exceptional. I love Netcommand (as does my wife) although I cant get the remote to switch the amplifier input when the source changes(ie. when I go from cable to XBOX, the amplifier stays on the cable setting instead of switching to the XBOX input). I have tries several different methods both the Denon presets and programming the amplifier settings to no avail. I am using a Denon 5800 if anyone else has a solution, please let me know.

PHarding,

When you switch the audio from the built-in speakers to the AV Reciever does netcommand turn the reciever on correctly? It just doesn't switch to the correct input?

btw... I work at a UE/Soundtrack. If you found a salesman that would give you 20% off I'm surprised he is capable of walking around upright with the backbone he has. No way I would drop my pants like that, the only way I would is if you were buying a very large system purchase... >15,000. He screwed himself and the company. If his manager approved that he ought to be taken out back and flogged by his own salespeople as well as his boss. Just my opinion.

FYI... you should expect 10% discount on this TV. If you really want to work your salesman over you can shoot for a bit more of a discount. The HD Tivo is NEVER supposed to be discounted except for a promotion that DTV is offering where you can get $100 of any HD receiver when you buy it along with a TV thru UE/Soundtrack.

I bought my 62525 from UE, although the sale transaction was good and salesman great, I would have preferred to buy from a AV specialty shop, but no one else in town was carrying them yet. The best I got was 10% off MSRP. You could possibly get more and at other places get a DVD player or XBOX or DVDs. Even looking around at the questionable internet retailers, they will only give 10-12% off of MSRP, so 20% off is a great deal.

UE is in some financial trouble and was slow on paying suppliers like Boston Acoustics (BA) and Pioneer. BA products are no longer sold at UE becasue of this and Pioneer corporate is reportedly pissed off. If someone gets an extended warranty from UE, like I did, hopefully the underwriters will protect you if and when UE becomes insolvent. I hope that won't happen and the economy will turn around to help them (more competition is better).

If someone has to buy from a big box store then Best Buy and Circuit City would be the first choices. After that - UE/Soundtrack, Tweeter, then you're local boutique stereo/home theater shops.

We UE/SoundTrack are having a heck of a time right now, I hadn't heard that we were having problems paying Pioneer or BA but it's not the type of thing that is passed along to salesmen. I do know that they recently renegotiated finanacing and have acquired a line of credit that will carry us thru the next 6 months... but the next two quarters will pretty much determine if we make it (my opinion).

rsg_1, could you pass along your source for that info about Pioneer and BA, a PM would be fine if you don't want to disclose it on the board?

As for our warranties... while we do have our own service/repair center our warranties are underwritten by Warrantech (a separate warranty company) and beyond that by Houston General, so yes if the company does go under there will still be coverage. When you get a warranty get the warranty booklet... it has an 800 number to call warrantech.

Thanks for the input so far guys, keep them coming. Sounds like I can do better than 10% but if I ever get 20% to jump on it. I would rather go to BB or UE than a website so it sounds like this is a good way to go. Hey BigAl, quick question if you don't mind. As a salesman do you prefer it if someone is offering cash or does it make you look better if that person finances? when I sold cars we got bonuses for financing. Also, did you ever cut a deal for a customer & get "tipped". I've done that before as well because obiously a larger discount eats into your commision (sp?). Any info you are willing to share would be appreciated.

Whew...I didn't think that I should have been able to get much more (under normal circumstances) than I did. It did work out well for jacobms1, though. My salesman tried to get them to go for 10% off the stand and couldn't get it done. The system says the minimum price to sell is $349 (he showed me), and he needed it overridden. His manager wouldn't do it. He was kind of pissed, but I just laughed. I was pretty much joking when I said he should give me 10% of it, too. Wish I could have gotten a glance at the minimum price to sell for the 62725, though!

BigAl, have you had a Mitsu rep tell you anything regarding the lens on the 725s? I asked my salesman at UE again, and he said he felt pretty sure their rep had told them that the Medallions would have a crystal lens. I am wondering if one of them confused it with the 825s...if they are even going to have a different lens. Also, his system is still showing a warehouse date of 9/14...do you think that is reasonable? Don't worry...it's not like I am going to quote you to him or anything...this is just for my own information.

Thanks,

For anyone looking to buy a Mits in San Diego area, I pre-purchased a 52725 at Convoy Big Screens . I paid $[MSRP ONLY] with 24 mos. interest free / no payments and free delivery and set-up in home. These guys have a good reputation locally and will follow up well after the sale. For example, when the first batch of 52525's had the fans installed wrong and everyone else was sending their TV's back, Convoy sent techs out to your house and fixed the fan right there at no cost and didn't void any warranties. No one else locally figured out the problem.

if you go to [censored] and want to negotiate your best bet is to deal with the HT manager. The HTM will most likely deal with the GM and then you can get your deal. However, do not ask if you can get a discount, simply say that you will buy the tv for msrp minus a good sizable number including all there bonus stuff on top of that price. If you make an offer be prepared to buy it. If the HTM thinks your not for real they will not even consider the deal.

I guess "left side" is probably the wrong term to use. It seems to happen for me on border between left-to-right transitions of very dark to bright colors. Just seems most noticeable on peoples faces, I guess because its natural to look at faces, especially if they're talking...

I thought it only occurred for me on standard definition NTSC broadcasts, and only using the Mits RF tuner. I will try to see what it looks like on the Matrix DVD. I have never seen it happen on HD source material. Doesn't mean it isn't there... I just haven't seen it.

The only way to get some visibility on this issue at Mitsubishi is to call a Mits authorized servicer for the problem. The Mits engineering dept does not deal with consumers, only their authorized servicer network. And you will need lots of people doing this to get any response/action from Mits. Their front line people on the phones just do triage on the typical average consumer issues. However, if there is a known firmware/software fix for some problem, they do deal directly with the consumer on the flash card firmware updates.

So far, there has not been an overwhelming number of people posting about this issue. Either they don't notice it, or it's not there on all the sets.

Please! Heed the mod! We have all spent a lot of time building this beast with some really good info on these Mitsu sets. Don't blow it by posting "your best deal". We all understand how good negotiations can feel fantastic and you want to share the feeling and hope someone else can benefit as well. Personally, I love hearing about the best deals, but it's against avsforum policy, so please post about them somewhere else.

hay, [barrybud] I think that [rtmoore4] got your left boot clean do you think he can start on your right boot.

The mit is great the Comcast installer that installed the cable card took 1.5 hours and did not know what the hell he was doing.

AVS doesn't even sell mits so it is not like we are sitting in their coffee shop drinking coffee from starbucks, telling people to buy coffee from another retailer. Or am I wrong?

By the way, I tried to find the exact phrase stating that you can't tell a person what a great deal you got and where you got it. Where is that exactly?

It's in the AVSForum posting rules. If you didn't see it, check again.

You're right, It's not illegal, but I believe the reason the rule is in place is so that this board can be useful for finding out information about A/V products. If they took that rule out, most of these threads would be inundated with posts about "deal here", "I got mine for $$$ here". It is probably also in place to keep advertisers from spamming the forums as well.

If you really want to talk pricing with someone, that's what PM's are for. My $.02 :)

Has anybody tried to hook the firewire output of a Sci Atl HD 3250 up to the firewire inputs of the Mits? I tried and could get nothing, and does the firewire need to be activated on the STB by the cable provider??

Yes I have an SA3250HD and have hooked up the firewire. It is detected and added into the NetCommand menu.

The firewire ports must be enabled by the cable provider. I had to call them up and fight through 1st tier support that didn't know anything about the firewire ports but was able to get them to send an updated firmware to the box that enabled the firewire ports.

My tech was looking at some picture of the SA3250HD that didn't have the firewire ports on it so he was all confused and knew nothing about it. There are some SA3250HD's that don't have firewire so I guess their documentation is based off of these models.

He didn't seem to have a clue what these ports were or what they were for so I asked him if there is anyone else he could ask about it. He wrote my question down and put me on hold for about 5 minutes or so. Came back and said they had scheduled my box for the upgrade which would happen sometime that night. Came home the next day and everything worked great.

You can tell if it's upgraded by looking in the service menu on the screen that shows all the software versions. There will be an entry for "Firebus" something or other if you have received the update to activate the ports.

Pic from what I saw was good. Probably one of the best methods as far as PQ is concerned. One thing that you may or may not care about is that the Guide and any OSD menus will not appear over the firewire port. I am using mine connected into the HDMI port now because I do like having the guide every once in a while.

I do remember having some strange sync problems for like the first 2 days that I had the set. I would have to fiddle around turning on / off the tv and cable box to get it to come on, but haven't had any problems since those first 2 days. I don't think I did anything in particular to fix it. Sorry I couldn't be of more help there.

mipo777, No I don't accept tips, I think it's cheesy but I'm sure there are some who operate that way. We don't get a bonus and we don't take a hit for financing... the only downside for me is that it adds time to complete the transaction, but it's free money, so when you buy... ask for it, you may as well, it's free money as long as you understand the terms and are disciplined.

Ozy-
PLEASE let us know- this is the unit I'm targeting. I need some feedback on the reflectivity (or lack thereof) of the new screen, and also if you notice any tilt issue. That and maybe the green tinge on the edges are about the only problems that are consistently discussed with the 525s. I would hope that since they are latest production run, there won't be the tilt issue.

Thanks in advance!!

I haven't noticed the lack of video setting memory on firewire, but then, I couldn't get firewire working for digital channels, so I didn't worry about it too much.

DefineEdge settings do seem to be stable between input changes. That being said, I think I use DefineEdge=On for almost every input, so I'm not sure my experience is all that useful to you.

Is there any consensus on the comparison of the PQ (and only PQ!) of the Mits HD2+ sets to that of the Sammy 85 series HD2+ sets (independent of the extra features the Mits has, the glare on the 525 screen--which will presumably be eliminated in the 725 sets--and whether or not you like the 'Kirk' form factor of the Sammy)?

Does the speaker grill on your 62525 bow out in the middle making it difficult to push the front panel buttons? The grill fell off in our living room when the two delivery guys were carrying it in. I thought they messed it up but they gave me a call when they got back to their store and told me the floor model is the same way. I also checked out the floor model at best buy and theirs did the same thing but not quite as bad. IMO, the grill seems cheap and it comes off way too easily. Cant wait until the little one figures out how to remove it.

Personally, I think it is pretty close to a dead heat. The colors on the Mits might be a bit more lifelike. The final thing that pushed me toward the Mits was the announcement from Samsung that their 'tabletop' HD2+ sets would be going back to their 2nd generation light engine and 6-segment color wheel. That, and the color control on the Mits. I did see a Sammy 5085 playing 'Ice Age' (I think) in a store this weekend, and it *was* stunning, I have to say....

Just my $.02,

The protective screen of the 725 models will NOT eliminate glare. It will, however, be improved over the 525 models. To completely eliminate the glare, you can simply remove the protective screen. The underlying "non-protected" screen is very similar to Samsung DLPs.

See the Mits RP CRTs for examples of how the screens vary among the different models.

My 62725 will be in the basement, so I am not worried at all about the "glare problem".

After testing, I have enough time to shut everything down and if all the equip is in stand by mode, it should last quite a while.

I even sold my ExactPower this last week. So I am committed now. Plus the other advantage for me is with power dropoffs, the batteries kick in to prevent unwanted shutdowns.

teknoman2000,

Shut down the set if you can, then wait 15 minutes for the lamp to cool down, then un-plug the set for a few minutes. After that, plug it back in and power up, and answer no when asked if the lamp was replaced.

If you can't shut down, do a reset and see if you can get to the point of shutting down.

The main thing that I have heard on this is to not tilt the unit forward more than 14 degrees or so. From what I understand, side to side is not an issue. I have been told that backwards isn't a problem, but I'm a little more skeptical about that given the frontward tilt restriction. I hope that helps some...

Thanks for the update BigAl - hopefully the 62" is not far behind.

Pertaining the "TV Guide OnScreen" functionality, I spoke to Mitsubishi support a few weeks ago about this issue. We already know it will not be included in the 725/825 models, but the reason I was given is that there is an issue with the vendor - a licensing-type issue. I asked if it would be made available at a later time (via firmware upgrade) and the CSR indicated that this is possible in the not-too-distant future.

We will see...

From what I understand, you need a Triple LNB dish and they want you to pay $300 for an HD receiver. I find that hard to stomach since Dish Network is giving it away for new customers.
I'm planning on calling them myself to see if they can be reasonable about providing HD receivers considering the alternatives, but I'm not counting on anything.

This is correct...I sort of just did it myself.

Had a regular DTV box, but proactively bought the HD hardware a few months ago with plans of swapping out the regular box for the HD box when my set showed up. Got delivered last week. Trying to get a jump on things I called the day before to pull the plug on my regular box and "activate" my HD box but they wouldn't do it unless I actually had the TV to test it with. So called the next day to get things setup. After some initial pain the picture looks awesome on my WD-62525!!!

I also have the 62525. The picture on my Philips Directivo box looks kind of washed out (colors). Any improvment with non-HD content with your new receiver?

Right, from reading this thread I've learned that a deal can be made if you call and get the right person on the right day, sometimes you have to try more than once. I'm gonna sick my wife on them.. ;) Sounds like I need to wait until the TV arrives.

My cable box only outputs 480 or 1080i..how well does Mits handle a 1080i

My box uses a card,,but not sure it will work with mits

My Dish811 receiver allows 480p 720p and 1080i, and I prefer the 1080i feed over the 720p. The 720 has faint vertical lines in it, and the 1080 has a slight amount of granularity, but I still like the 1080 better

Hope this helps.

Good luck to all of you who have pre-ordered the 725's. I was considering doing the same, but I still can't get off the fence due to the lack of properly setup 525's in my area to view at the local retailers.

Granted, all of the 525's in my area are probably not set up right; however, they all have a very dark picture (as in not vibrant). There is also an extremely small vertical sweet spot. So small that if you are only approx 5-6 feet away, there is no vertical position that will completely eliminate fade from either the top or bottom of the picture (hope that makes sense).

A long way back in this thread a poster realted comments by others about bright pictures as being equivalent to liking "boomy" bass. I see it the opposite way. Boomy bass masks good sound quality the same way a dark picture masks good PQ. If it is difficult to see excellent PQ because it is masked/obscured by a dark picture, what good is it???

In any case, don't get me wrong, I like the Mits features, service, form factor, aesthetics (I can't deal with the silver frames, they are a constant distraction to me) and if the 725 has a brighter picture (perhaps it will due solely to the new anti-glare screen), then I will join you all as a proud new Mits owner.

For those about to get their new 725's, if you could comment on the screen brightness, I would really appreciate it. Tx for all the excellent info in this post!

IMHO the '525's were poorly displayed around here too. I went ahead and ordered my 62725 based on what I've read and the fact that I can return it if I don't like. For me, it was more of a decision to pull the trigger and get an HDTV now as opposed to later. I'm confident if I don't like it, I'll find something I do.

I'll report back when I get it...

Not sure I can accurately answer that question.

I had a regular DTV box hooked up to a 32" Sony tube. I never tried my old box with my new TV...I switched both at the same time.

Thus far non-HD stuff looks about as good as can be expected with my Samsung receiver. Although I haven't added in my Tivo yet as I am waiting for the new stand to arrive but since that will most likely be going through S-video I expect no changes.

D* did my HD equipment upgrade before my 62525 arrived. I don't recall them even asking if I had a HDTV or not. You will need a HD receiver on hand (if they are not supplying it) so they can properly configure and test the signal. I don't think you need a HDTV to do that since you could run component or S-Video to a regular TV.

Just so I don't stray too far OT on this thread, I will PM you a copy of an earlier message I sent concerning my D* upgrade credit.

The WD-52525 is so damn bright in my home, that I need to turn on some lights just to keep from straining my eyes! Our old TV was a 4:3 analog Mitsubishi 50" CRT RPTV.

On the WD-xx525, the default out-of-the-box setting for contrast (i.e. brightness) is 100%, and brightness control (i.e. black level) is 50%.

You should try adjusting the set in the store yourself, to see how you like it. I've done the Digital Video Essentials calibration and I can tell you that the contrast setting at 100% is WAY too bright. And you need to increase the brightness control so that some detail in the blacks will show up.

I'm curious, what other TVs were nearby when you looked at the Mits?

Anyone know how to remove the HD OTA channels from the TV?

I only ask because when they are there (even if just in memory) my Satellite picture through ANT 2 becomes filled with video noise.

A few days ago I noticed my ANT 2 had become unwatchable and I didn't know what caused it.

I discovered that when I unplugged/replugged the TV the ANT 2 picture became clear and then I noticed that I didn't have any OTA HD channels. I searched for them, and they were added, and then my ANT 2 became distorted again.

Since that seems to be the source of the problem, any idea what is wrong and what I can do to fix it?

Thanks

I'll second that. If you like bright you should have no problems with this TV. 100% Brightness is way too much for me as well. Even in a relatively lit room i still only have the contrast set around 40 (out of a max of 63).

I was reading some posts on another board and a guy there mentioned that Mits was coming out with a anti-glare screen for the 525 series in about October for $200+

I saw in this thread someone mention that they were coming out with a bezel cover for those who remove the diamond shield.

Any verification on either of these?

FYI- My 52525 manuf. in August of 2004 has FW version 4. Look very good. If you buy this tv you will need to turn off the mitsubishi add that pops up every ten minutes. I still haven't figured out how to turn that stupid add off. I guess I will resort to the manual.

I think the screen enhances the image quality. if you take the screen off the screen door effect is easier to see, just look at the sammy.

Instructions to disable it are on one of the last few pages of the manual. Sequence is something like Menu-0-QV-0 though I don't remember for sure.

What is the full version for your firmware? Just 4? or something like 26.004.001?

Why won' t NetCommand select the correct input. It seems like a basic function that any learning type of remote could handle. Maybe I don't have a good grasp of what Netcommand can handle, but I was hoping it would at least make a dent in the amount of remotes I have sitting around. LOL, Things can get ugly around the house when the wife has to use more than one remote to get something done.

On another note, I keep looking for the user manuals on the Mitsubishi site for the 52725's and they still don't seem to be available. Anyone have a good link for them?

If you select NetCommand in Setup and go to Review, do the devices and receiver inputs match up for you as they should? Also, I found that for my Directivo and cable box, I was better off using the Learn feature than trying to use one of the presets. Assuming you can use Learn for A/V receivers, maybe that's the way to go.

I've gone from 5 remotes to 1 for 90% of remote functions I need by using Netcommand.

The Mits remote is not actually learning, although it does have some preprogrammed codes for different units. But its much more convenient to use NetCommand in the TV to learn your other component's remote codes, and let the TV IR-blast your other components.

NetCommand is able to switch my Denon 3805 receiver to the correct input, but I had to learn the codes from the Denon remote. There are noticeable delays (like several seconds) before the inputs switch. I guess NetCommand is smart enough to add delays, given that most receivers can't handle input-selection IR codes immediately after power up.

For an AV receiver, NetCommand gives you up to 7 generic inputs. Just assign them in any order, and associate each input to whatever actual receiver inputs you are using. They don't have to match. You're going to tell NetCommand that Input1 is the DVD. You just learn whatever remote IR code is necessary to set the receiver to the DVD input.

If your receiver does not have a discrete input select button on your remote (i.e. you have to cycle through a bunch of selections via a single button), you have a problem. In that case, you can try another learning remote (like Pronto, or one of the One-For-All JP1 programmed remotes) that has a database of discrete codes for input selections - and let NetCommand learn from that. But if your receiver doesn't support discrete IR codes to select a given input, then you've got bigger problems.

while we're talking NetCommand...

If I get a switcher to switch HDMI outputs from my HD Tivo and soon to be purchased Denon 2910 DVD player to the one HDMI input on the Mits, how will I set up NetCommand to understand the switcher and control the Tivo or the DVD player? Has anyone done this yet?

Good point there Rufhausen...Looking at the Review page helped me troubleshoot my issues.

I found that when I taught the remote codes to NetCommand, it would often look like they would "take" but a few functions didn't work when I tried to use them later. I just went back and retrained the fuctions that didn't work.

One thing that I have found is that when you do the "training", when you push the enter key to get it ready to receive the signal it will learn, wait for about 2-3 seconds before you send the signal. It seems to accept it more readily if you give it a couple seconds before sending the signal...

Also, since my AVR doesn't have enough digital inputs for all of my sources, I set it up as having more inputs than I acutally would have used (I think I just used the default of 7). I then set up a couple of the inputs with the same signal so it thinks it is switching to a different input for my DVD and Sat Rcvr. In reality, I have to unplug the cable from the Sat and replace it with the DVD optical cable when I want to watch a DVD with DD sound.

Just a few of my ramblings for the day....

Thanks,
Jeff

Has anyone done this yet? Not me, but that would be nice. I suspect NetCommand will tell you it can't be done because some other device is already using the HDMI (they call it MonLink) input.

{Edit} On second thought, I wonder if you can call it an AV receiver, and just UNCHECK the audio selections, and leave the VIDEO selections checked. Then set your DVD and TIVO devices as connected through this pseudo AV reciever instead of directly to the TV?

Here's another possibility.... I haven't heard anyone learning IR macros into Netcommand... so I don't know if this will work. You would need to have macros setup on some smart learning remote. The macros would handle the switching of your receiver AND the video switcher. Then you tell NetCommand you have a single AV receiver and learn the macros from the smart learning remote. Netcommand thinks it's switching a single device connected to the HDMI/Monlink input; but in reality, you're switching multiple devices at once.

That circuitry apparently runs hot enough they need to cool it all the time.

The two other fans will continue to run for about a minute after power-off to accelerate the cool-down of the projector bulb, extending the life of the bulb.

Well, I had quit reading over this thread because I have had my WD 62525 for almost a month now with no problems. However, an hour ago I tried to turn the set on and the red lamp light came on. I tried again with the same result. Then I unplugged everything for 60 seconds and tried again. This time the picture came up for about 10 seconds before the screen went blank and the red lamp light came on again.

I called customer service. (949? I have to PAY for this call, too!?!?) I was immediately told it was a firmware problem and not a faulty lamp. The agreement is being faxed to my office as I type. Is this the infamous "reset" issue or have I stumbled across something else?

p.s. I am about to lose my freakin' mind over this!

SFBliss

This is not the reset problem as I experienced it. For me, the set would often refuse to power on after having been shut off for a while. A reset would solve this, but I would also need to re-scan channels, a 5-10 mn process (a real pain). The firmware fix Mitsu sent me cured the set.

Agreed. This doesn't sound like the symptoms of the reset problem we all knew and loved.

The report of the red lamp light is one that I have not yet seen on this forum. Sounds like it would be a bad lamp to me, but maybe Mitsy knows something we don't (hard to believe I know!).

[EDIT] I kind of hope it isn't the lamp, as this might be an indicator of lamp life that we may all expect! Or maybe it is just a fluke.

As you know main additional features that the 825's have compared to the 525's according to Mitsu are:
1) High Transmissivity Anti-glare Diamond Shield.
2) Internal 120GB PVR Hard Disc Drive HD Recorder
3) TV Guide on Screen- 8 day interactive Program Guide

Hope all this is worth the extra price and wait.

I think you mean DVR and that will be the 825 series. Another thread has the arrival date of the 825s at 10/10 according to GG in SoCal. I believe you'll be able to record HD OTA and other sources with it, but I"m still learning. HTBruce had a point about this earlier in one of the Mits DLP threads.

Since this got yanked from the 725s, I wouldn't hold my breath on this one. Especially if it is a licensing disagreement as reported here in another post...the good news there is that a future firmware upgrade might enable that again in the future if that truly is the problem...

I saw the WD52725 tonight and I have to say I am impressed. I took pictures but the files are too large to attach, so not sure what to do. They are about 1.5 MB JPG files. So any suggestions are appreciated! I took one w/a flash to compare glare and one without.

I think the anti glare screen reduces the glare by 75-80% which makes a huge difference to those of us who have a fairly bright space. Also the new cabinet makes the set look classier, it reminds me of the Sammy Tantus model. I also thing the screen helps picture depth but did not get alot of time to spend with it.

But mine will be here Friday anyway this set blows away the Sony GW111 that I have on loan. No comparison!

So any suggestions on how to upload these large photos would be great!

For anyone living the Seattle/Tacoma area, Magnolia will have the 62725's in Oct 15th. I have pre-ordered one from the Tacoma store, said they had 60 units coming in and 20 had already been sold.

So any suggestions on how to upload these large photos would be great!

scpanel,

If you have Windows XP the process is very simple. Just click Start, My Pictures and browse to the folder containing the Mitsu photos. Click on the files and select "Email this file" from the left taskbar. The next prompt should ask about resizing the images and select the default setting "Make all my pictures smaller". Your files will now appear as attachments to an email message. Just "right click" them and select "Save As" to move them back to your local drive. This should save the image in a 640x480 file format that is much smaller than the 1.5MB originals. You could then upload the images to the AVS Forum member's photo gallery where we could search for them using your ID or you could just attach them to a posting. If you don't have XP then just resize them using your photo editor software.

I used this process and inserted my pictures into an earlier posting but I just saw a notice in the photo gallery discouraging this practice. Sorry Mod.

I was looking at the Mits DLP tvs at Best Buy and I compared them to the Sammy tvs that were right next to them. I must say that they Mits had a more real picture.

Anyone else notice thing?

scpanel - great news about the anti-glare screen. So, is the black on the bottom speakers fabric or black plastic?

saw the 52725 at ue this evening. if anyone is expecting the anti-glare screen to be leaps & bounds less reflective than the 52525's then they may be disapointed. if you are a rear projection crt owner, that may not be an issue to you.

I agree and think the picture I saw tonight on the 52725 was as close to 3D as it gets. I too looked at the Kirk, and the and the HD3 Sammy and I thought the Mits picture was more realistic and life like, even compared to the plasma that was near by.

I disagree meshuggah, I think its a huge improvement over the 525. I wish I had taken a picture w/a flash of both to prove it, but Ill bet there are pictures of the 525 earlier in this thread to compare to the pictures of the 725 I took tonight.

i may be too picky, but that is the impression i got from the set. i'm not a basher... i wanted this set to be the one i brought home. i've been waiting too long to upgrade from my 35" mits tube !

Does the PQ looks the same between the xx525 and the xx725?

how much are the xx725s? I saw a Mits at Best Buy for $3999 for a 52", but I'm not sure if it was the 525 or 725 series. But I thought it had the best picture of them all, even though it was more expensive

I believe MSRP for the 62725 is $4699, not sure about the 52".

It had to have been the 52" version since they had it listed only $200 less than MSRP. Nothing major.

Thats a nice DLP tv. Much better than the Samsung version.

Is this the latest version of Mits DLP tvs or have them been out for a few months? And what is next for Mits DLPs? Did I read correctly on their website that they will have a DLP with an internal harddrive?
