BigDaddyRoy 12-05-07, 09:26 AM But they are not currently available for most Comcast markets...yet.
Thats why this whole 'limited availability' thing all over this forum kills me. You can see right at the bottom of the first post
Please note that not all HD channels are available in all areas.
There are channels on the top end that some people have that I, and other Comcast subscribers, don't have available yet. If they are available somewhere, they should be at the top of the list, in my opinion. Seeing them as available gives me a better indication that I may see it sometime in the future. On the bottom of that list, there is a big difference between Discovery HD, which is rolled out already in many markets (Boston, Chicago, etc) and Fox Business HD, which hasn't been reported on a single Comcast system I've seen yet, or ESPNewsHD, which doesn't even exist yet.

Marcus Carr 12-05-07, 10:43 AM Comcast to split 'triple-play' services into HD premium, value tiers
By Jacqueline Emigh, BetaNews
December 5, 2007, 9:57 AM
Citing Verizon as his company's principal -- if not only -- real competition going forward, a senior Comcast executive told an investors' conference this morning it's responding to FiOS with a huge investment in higher-definition services.
NEW YORK CITY (BetaNews) - "You don't love issuing press releases like the one we did last night," admitted Comcast co-CFO Michael Angelakis at a UBS financial analysts' conference early this morning. Angelakis was referring to a less-than-pretty picture of Comcast's subscriber growth, which it had to admit was lower than previous estimates.
But his solution appears to be a full-on attack, which will include a $6 billion capital expenditure in vastly improved set-top boxes (STBs). That expenditure will aid in the rollout of two new high-definition "triple play" service packages, splitting the current service into two tiers but conceivably upgrading all of its current voice/data/Internet customers.
A high-definition package will address customers which Angelakis described as having the newest and best video equipment available, and though he didn't say it explicitly, he likely meant 1080p HD displays. Most high-def cable services now broadcast in 720p.
But a second tier of "triple play" service will be rolled out as well, for what he described as more cost-conscious customers.
Both services will be competing head-to-head with what Angelakis singled out as his biggest competition: Verizon, whose FiOS fiberoptic triple and quadruple play services (adding Verizon Wireless) have apparently made significant inroads in metropolitan markets, and may be blamed for Comcast's lower-than-anticipated subscriber growth. This morning, New Yorkers awoke to messages blanketing all media, promoting a big Verizon giveaway: a free 19" HDTV for new FiOS subscribers.
Angelakis seemed a little taken aback when an analyst confronted him with news of the Verizon promotion. "The competition has increased," he said, "and we've got to respond." Then invoking Winston Churchill, he went on, "We will fight in the streets..."
But where Comcast apparently won't fight is in the quadruple-play arena, where Verizon may have an edge. He repeated the company's statement from Monday that it will not be participating in the FCC's upcoming 700 MHz auction, whose major bidders will likely include Verizon Wireless, AT&T, and Google. Yesterday, satellite service provider EchoStar reportedly indicated it will participate in the auction as well.
The co-CFO did not add further details on available service plans or any possible rollout itinerary, and Comcast has yet to issue a formal statement on these new services.
Comcast had expected to gain 6.5 million new subscribers nationwide for 2007, but yesterday had to concede the final tally will be closer to 6 million. Revenue growth forecasts for the year were also sheared, down to 11% from a previous forecast of 12%.

Marcus Carr 12-05-07, 10:47 AM Comcast moves more analog channels to digital tier
Wednesday, Dec 05, 2007 - 09:59 AM Updated: 10:20 AM
By DOUGLAS DURDEN
TIMES-DISPATCH STAFF WRITER
Continuing a trend started earlier this year, Comcast Cable has moved several more channels off its analog tier and made them digital-only.
In order to receive those channels, analog customers would need to upgrade to a digital tier by adding a digital box.
Included in this latest round are the TV Guide Network (which went from cable channel 20 to 100), Oxygen (59 to 123) and CMT (69 to 146).
Hallmark will be moved from 58 to 137 early next year.
Three other channels -- Toon Disney, AMC and Leased Access -- were moved off analog in September. Home Box Office, The Game Show Network and Great American Country went digital-only in the spring.
Although this affects a minority of Comcast subscribers -- the company estimates nearly 80 percent of customers in the metro Richmond area are digital cable customers -- analog-only customers have seen their channels decline over the past year. Their bills haven't.
Comcast spokeswoman Aimee Metrick said that customers paying for the full standard service can upgrade to the digital starter level for the price they're currently paying. The digital starter tier includes some On Demand options, 47 music channels, parental controls and an interactive program guide.
As part of the upgrade promotion, customers will receive a digital box for free for 12 months, then pay an additional $1 a month.
Metrick said several factors go into determining which channels "migrate" from the analog tier, including improving the channel's picture and sound, the ability to add On Demand features, and interactive program guides.
"We are responding to requests every day from customers that want more On Demand programming, more high definition viewing options--and that's an overwhelming factor in making these decisions," Metrick said.
Comcast has added more than 17 new channels to digital this year, according to Metrick, including three HD channels last month -- TLC, PBS and Discovery.
Under franchise agreements with Richmond localities, the only channels Comcast is required to carry on the basic service tier are the PEG channels, meaning public, educational and government access channels.
Richmond's loss of analog channels isn't isolated. Moving channels off analog gives cable operators more bandwidth to add high definition channels.
"There will always be a basic level of service," said Comcast spokesman Jeff Alexander, noting that, in February 2009, analog will cease to exist as digital becomes the broadcast standard as mandated by the government.
"The fact of the matter is, the world is moving to digital, and we're seeing the vast majority of our customers move in that direction," he said. "But we do want to offer options to our customers."

Comcast up in Boston offers an internet/phone package for around $69. It seems to be aimed at those content with satellite but sees DSL as too slow. :)_

Put down the hammer, Granny.
I know the moderators keep the first post up to date. Considering enough people are seeing these channels already available on their Comcast systems, do you think it's time that Discovery HD, Sci-Fi HD, and The Learning Channel HD move on up to currently available?Sure, but I went back a few days and didn't see the post re: Sci-Fi. Is it available anywhere now? The others have been moved into Available Now.
Seattle comcast added following hd channels today:
AEHD
USAHD
History HD
NatGeo HD
Hopefully more are coming soon.

Great Job, fellow Chicagoans on getting the info out, this is good news!!!
Am I the only one, but has it been noticed that Comcast, which at one time had the most Premium Channels in HD, hasn't added any of the new HBO, Showtime, or Starz premium channels. More bang for the buck! Get with the times Comcast.
chad473 12-06-07, 05:05 PM when they are struggling to find space to put all these other new channels up, I wouldn't hold much hope for premiums. As of the list in the first post, we are now 10 channels behind the national count in my area. Searched newspapers, mypublic notices and not even a hint of anything to come here.
sansri88 12-06-07, 06:39 PM when they are struggling to find space to put all these other new channels up, I wouldn't hold much hope for premiums. As of the list in the first post, we are now 10 channels behind the national count in my area. Searched newspapers, mypublic notices and not even a hint of anything to come here.
Weird thing is, I did a crude calculation of what the capacity issues may be in my area, and I came up with this:
72 analog channels, leaving 45 QAM channels (assuming we are a 117 QAM channel system).
Take 2 channels out for HSI/CDV, leaving us with 43 QAM channels.
24 HD channels, say 2 on each QAM channel has 12 QAM channels gone. Total now: 31 QAM channels.
With just digital channels, subtract 14 QAM channels. Down to 17. One QAM channel is partially used (.5Mhz).
VOD takes 4 channels. Down to 13 with one partially used.
Channel 97 unusable (at least in another region). Down to 12, with one partially used.
Music choice is weird. According to cypherstream, MC can fit on 1 QAM channel. Total free now: 11 QAM channels with one partially used.
Total empty: 11 QAM channels. This is based on 2 QAM channels for HSI/CDV. I know channel 112 is for CMTS according to cypherstream's map, and that is factored into that already.
We have room for 22 HD channels according to my math and estimation. This is all dependent on if we have 117QAM channels (which I'm not sure of right now).
Now, we have 11QAM channels open! That's more than enough room to add new channels! Where are they Comcast?
Sansri, are you getting any of the channels Bubba5 mentioned?
Jose Herrera 12-06-07, 08:05 PM How long have we (Chicago) had DiscoveryHD? There was no message. There was a message about History but not this one. I was just browsing and saw it on channel 218.
kevin j 12-06-07, 08:08 PM Since yesterday.
sansri88 12-06-07, 08:36 PM Sansri, are you getting any of the channels Bubba5 mentioned?
Nope. As I've said before, my Comcast guy that works at the Union headend (the place that serves me) says Comcast of Northwest NJ (bubba's area) is special. They have a 625Mhz plant with only 22 analogs. They have the room because they took most analogs out. I think they were a former Service Electric or PatMedia area.
I am still waiting for a response from Meredith, she has not gotten back to me. I'll give her a week or so, and then I'll give Comcast Marketing in NJ a call.
What the hell is going on down here in Broward County? There hasn't been an HD channel added since Methusela was knee high to a gators' blowhole!

I know what you mean about Comcast in broward county. I asked Comcast about new HD channels, and based on the reply I got, I don't think there will be anything new coming anytime soon, because after all according to Comcast "only a small number of our subscribers actually have an HDTV." I wonder if other Comcast service areas have a better experience in terms of getting new HD channels.

There's 2 different WGN's. One, which is probably the one dspadoni gets, is the WGN superstation, which is supposed to launch an HD channel soon, might even be this month. I believe the SD version of this station is seen across the country with various providers
The other is the Chicago CW affiliate which has an HD version. That HD version is available in the Chicago area and is also on some of the Canadian satco/cable systems.
The 2 stations have different programming. The superstation version does not carry The CW programming. It carries mostly syndicated programming like The Cosby Show, Nash Bridges, earlier seasons of 24, etc, and also appears to carry Chicago Bulls NBA games.

Because the other areas just don't have much room to add all of those. I mean, we have what 17 must carries and 4 PEG's that all have to be on analog, and we're 750MHz so Comcast doesn't really bother doing anything with any of the analogs. If they got their analog count from the current 72 down to about 60 we would be OK for the near future.
chad473 12-08-07, 03:56 PM 72 analogs here too. ridiculous.

218 - HDT (HD Theater same guide info as 205 HD Theater - maybe this will be one of the other Discovery networks , probably Discovery HD)
My Tivo lists both 205 and 218 as HDT and has corresponding guide data. The problem is, I'm 90% sure the channel being actually *broadcast* on both 205 adn 218 is Discovery Channel HD and not HDT. It's hard because both channels do so much cross-promotion, but the actual show being broadcast on HDT isn't what airing on 205 or 218 for me.
Very weird.

To be fair, Comcast Chicago has been adding HD stations - we have 27 available as of today, with USA-HD and CNN-HD coming up next Thursday. And Sci-Fi-HD and TLC-HD are coming in January. That's quite an improvement over what we had just a couple of months ago.

It's all right here (http://www.cbsdigitalchicago.com/comcast/hd/). This was the web page where you could vote which of the three (Discovery, USA, CNN) HD channels you wanted Comcast to add first. As you can see, Discovery Channel HD won by a big margin so that was the first to go active last week.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for sometime in the next 5 years.
Why is getting a channel in HD from Comcast like pulling teeth? I understand the logistics that go into it, but come on. HDTV has been out for what, almost 10 years now? Maybe more? We should have more than 27 channels by now.

chad473 12-09-07, 10:44 PM I'm keeping my fingers crossed for sometime in the next 5 years.
Why is getting a channel in HD from Comcast like pulling teeth? I understand the logistics that go into it, but come on. HDTV has been out for what, almost 10 years now? Maybe more? We should have more than 27 channels by now.
hey, could be worse. you could have 21 channels. maybe you guys aren't so bad off.

Wow. I can't believe I missed it. Thanks. Usually they announced this via messages.
bicker1 12-10-07, 07:26 AM Why is getting a channel in HD from Comcast like pulling teeth?I think that's really just a myth. "Getting a channel in HD" isn't something which a single user can even expect to accomplish. What is "like pulling teeth" is getting a substantial portion of our fellow consumers to adopt our own personal preferences, and put their money as readily behind those preferences as we would. That is what would get a service provider to do our bidding more readily.
Wow. I can't believe I missed it. Thanks. Usually they announced this via messages.
I only found out about it from here as well. Didn't get any message on by box.

I posted this a week ago. It was correct for Discovery HD.
For what it's worth (Chicago area).
On my Guide in Vista Media Center (not sure who they get the guide info from):
216 - CNN HD
218 - HDT (HD Theater same guide info as 205 HD Theater - maybe this will be one of the other Discovery networks , probably Discovery HD)
221 - USA HD
Try going to http://tv.msn.com/tv/guide and see if it shows up for your zip code yet.

The listings show for my zip code, & I am in the southern suburbs. So we'll look for USA & CNN on the 13th. I read in an earlier post that there was a contest in Chicago to see which would be next after History-HD, obviously Discovery-HD won, but this is now old news here in Chicago. When will we get Sci-Fi HD & TLC-HD?
sievers 12-10-07, 12:42 PM january
BigDaddyRoy 12-10-07, 01:12 PM Sure, but I went back a few days and didn't see the post re: Sci-Fi. Is it available anywhere now? The others have been moved into Available Now.
Thanks, Ken. The list looks great. As I see, there have been a number of posts re: Sci-Fi availability since then, so I figure you already have that info. I am anxiously awaiting my six channel add date in my area in January.

JamesDax 12-11-07, 12:20 PM Pittsburgh just got for new channels including Sci-Fi HD and areas in Central PA are getting new HD channels today. So my question is... WHY IS PHILADELPHIA GETTING PASSED OVER???
chad473 12-11-07, 12:22 PM who says central pa is getting them today, we didn't get anything. last I heard it might be sometime next year.
hdtvjunkie247 12-11-07, 12:22 PM Next HD channel for Comcast appears to be Fox Business Network HD. Apparently the Indiana, PA area got that channel today, along with some other ones.
Bananko 12-11-07, 02:03 PM Sacramento Comcast subscribers and subscribers in the surrounding Central California Comcast markets all received NFL Network HD a little while ago.
However, come tomorrow (12/12), we Sacramento Comcast subscribers will receive A&E HD, KMAX (CW) HD and National Geographic HD while subscribers in the surrounding Central California Comcast markets will get those new HD channels in addition to Discovery HD, HGTV, History HD (which I would've dearly loved to have) and USA HD... and Sacramento Comcast subscribers will continue to be charged at least the same amount as those other subscribers.
Worst of all, neither SureWest nor AT&T Uverse is being offered in my area, and I can't afford the upfront costs of DirecTV and DISH Network at the moment. And of course, it would take winning the lottery for me to be able to afford moving back to the SF Bay Area. :(
Sacramento continues to be the absolute worst served Comcast market in the nation (we received the ESPN2-HD wave of new HD channels in March 2007, long after the rest of the nation - including the surrounding Central California Comcast markets - received it in June 2006). :(

Maybe among the worst, but Santa Rosa CA still only has DiscHDT, ESPN, HBO, Cinemax and Starz, with FSNBA-HD for games only. Been that way since Comcast started providing HD in the bay area.

No, we get the 4 locals plus PBS(KQED) and the one's I mentioned above, but that's it. We're supposed to be upgraded to 1GHz and in fact a few nodes(6) are supposed to be lit up this month, but for the major portion of Santa Rosa we're still in the dark ages.

1GHz? Cool!
On the other hand, there hasn't even been a hint of when Sacramento Comcast will even get those additional new HD channels, much less when (if ever) it'll upgrade its entire system. :(
Pittsburgh just got for new channels including Sci-Fi HD and areas in Central PA are getting new HD channels today. So my question is... WHY IS PHILADELPHIA GETTING PASSED OVER???
We don't have Sci Fi HD. Last ones we got were TBS and CNN before the baseball playoffs. Before that I got National Geo HD, FoodHD, and HGTV HD. I am waiting for Sci Fi, USA and TLC.
merlconn13 12-11-07, 04:29 PM just added today pittsburgh bunch of new channels. mhd, scifi, usa, food, history, national geo, usa, universal, AE, and maybe 1 or 2 more.. i am a former adelphia customer that was swithced to comcast to let you know

I stand corrected. Just got home and turned on the tube and found the following new channels:
193 - Disc HD
194 - Sci Fi HD
195 - USA HD
196- Hist. HD
Nice surprise. This is in the southside (city) of Pittsburgh. Seems to me now the only thing I am missing that Comcast carries is TLC.
Merlconn13, what area of Pittsburgh are you in? Bethel Park? USC? Mt. Lebo?
vtec4me 12-11-07, 05:11 PM hell yea....SLC, Utah just got some new HD channels today.
656 KUCWD
676 USAHD
677 HISTD
678 APHD
679 TLCHD
680 TDCHD
now, just have to wait for CNN and FOOD channels and i'm good.

DiscoveryHD
SciFi HD
MHD
N Geo HD
FoodHD
A&EHD
HGTVHD
UNIHD
USAHD
HISTHD
Also received CNNHD and TBSHD about a month ago. So 12 new channels in 1 month is way ahead of Comcasts normal curve. 30 HD stations now here in Morgantown.
Bananko 12-11-07, 07:11 PM Well, it's over twice as many as I get. :p
But much less than everyone else has. :(
sansri88 12-11-07, 07:36 PM Tsk tsk still waiting here in probably their largest market with the highest HD penetration rates...
But much less than everyone else has. :(
Not much less. We have only 25 HD channels here in S. Jersey. Same with you Sansri?

Turns out my area is not the part of Santa Rosa to be lit up yet, the high-falutin' folks out in Bennett Valley are the lucky one's apparently. :(

No, we have 24. We don't have AEHD, and it seems like a good thing that we don't have it.
JamesDax 12-11-07, 10:47 PM Yeah, just 26 here in Philly but Indiana, PA has 32.

merlconn13 12-11-07, 11:49 PM i am in wilkins township/forest hills/right by monroville area if you know where thats at. got pretty much all the channels BlackwaterStout posted up a few posts above this. that brings the total to 32 channels where im at

Yes, because the Twin Cities metropolitan area is only 4 million people.
Marcus Carr 12-12-07, 12:59 PM maybe the trick is to move to the middle of nowhere to get more HD.
No, move to an area with a good track record.
In Baltimore:
2004 – HD service started with 10, then 3 more
2005 – 4
2006 – 3 (INHD2 was discontinued)
2007 – 9
2008 – 3 confirmed
maybe the trick is to move to the middle of nowhere to get more HD.
Exactly, those people do have more HD, cause they have D* :)
Philadelphia got passed over last round of additions, and didn't get them till months after many other markets as well. There are at least 7 we don't have, plus Fox Buisness, and I think some reported getting weather channel HD?

looks good. I'm fuzzy on exact dates but we got 3 this year (MHD in the spring, NFL/NatGeo in Sept). 2006 would have been ESPN2 at the world cup, UHD at the Olympics. The transition to Mojo was '06 as well..I think. 21 total here. We seemed to keep up just fine with other markets until this year.
edit: Vs/Golf was this year or last..not sure. I can't say I've ever watched it anyway.

LOL Yeah I sometimes think this too. I used to live in a very small rural town in Oregon 100 miles south of Portland with a population of around 1200. One day for the hell of it I put my old zip code from there into the Comcast site to see if they could even get any HD yet. Low and behold, they actually had more HD channels than we have here in Seattle. Now that Seattle finally added 4 new HD channels to almost catch us up to thier lineup, they go and add the new Discovery HD's and HGTV etc...
Maybe they have more bandwidth out there, I don't know... maybe they just have less people complain when they convert the analogs to digital to free up bandwidth.
bob2274 12-12-07, 05:54 PM The systems in the less populated areas have newer cable systems than big cities in most cases. Comcast got its start in Philly decades ago, and the its original footprint, while state of the art years ago, is probably in need of huge upgrades.

I believe the same is for us. We were upgraded from 450Mhz to 750MHz back in 1997-1998, our system is now way out of date. We are one of the areas with the highest subscription rates so I would have thought Comcast would care for us more than rural areas.

I really am amazed that we continue to get looked over.

That's about the time Comcast did the same upgrade for us. I don't know of any other significant upgrades other than this, except maybe to get the former Time Warner system Comcast absorbed to play nicely with the rest of their system.
I doubt your system is way out of date.

I think most of the outlying areas/burbs of Philly are 870mhz. I know the systems around and including mine are. Not sure about the city, but there are some small pockets of other providers(RCN, service electric) I think, and some were absorbed from Adelphia not long ago.
The last year or so, when one area gets a channel we ALL get it around the entire metro area, into parts of Northern Delaware as well. I believe digital phone has been around for a couple years as well.

Well, how many analog channels do you have? If you have around 70+, then I am seriously going to yell at Comcast, because we have 72 analogs at the moment.
how does one know what cable company my comcast was before? is it true that all comcast channel line-ups nationwide will be standardize?
Slickone 12-13-07, 06:42 PM It's Official, Chicagoans. CNN-HD(ch. 216), & USA-HD(ch. 221) are on air. We're at 31 HD channels, now. Fox Business Channel is added in SD on 1/10. So I think Sci-FI & TLC will be added around then. Any word on The Weather Channel yet?

sievers 12-14-07, 12:16 AM that's a pretty nice layout, hitting 28 in 35 consecutive possible channels, and the movie channels are all grouped together. In chicago it's all sloppy, spread wide at 30 across 53 consecutive possible channels, with crappy non-hd channels in between. I've also noticed in some places like Seattle where the numbers match better on the locals. What is it, 204,205,207 instead of 4,5,7, something like that. wish we had that! Too bad it's all sloppy, I wish they'd sort the channels out better.

sounds similar to us. we don't have any of those...just wait have to wait around since comcast never sends notices of new channels here. We have been getting hammered with messages about job openings on the STB though. Every few days..a few times in the last month or two we'd get 2 a day. Highly annoying.
FWIW, Comcast in my area had 19 HD channels (including 6 locals out of D.C., HBO,Showtime,Starz,Max,MHD,UHD,Espn,Espn2,Mojo,TNT,HD Theater,NFL & TBS). Today, 12 more are showing up:

Evidently. I live in a town with less than 7,000 people. We now have 32 HD channels plus the OnDemand.
I guess we weren't the only ones who had new channels added today.

I can wait 2-3 months knowing I've at least got it in HD now.
Also, they're broadcasting these new channels in Clear QAM, which I love.
theguest 12-15-07, 05:41 AM that's a pretty nice layout, hitting 28 in 35 consecutive possible channels, and the movie channels are all grouped together.
They want us to use the favorites button
i called customer support again. They said new channels will be here by Jan 8 .I hope they deliver on that promise!

Nothing ever announced that I saw. Checked the bill each month for something too. All we had was a rate increase with them saying new things were coming... but everyone got that.
The just appeared on Friday, ironically the day after the population of the town halved with most college students leaving. Maybe they did it to work bugs out because Comcast Sportsnet HD has no sound at all right now, on anything.
I was honestly surprised because we lost HDnet and gained useless CWHD about last December.
Comcast here has to compete because college students with their HDTVs demand HD channels.

I'm just so excited that I had to share with you guys. A week or two ago, I received my Comcast bill that included a notice for price increases. Great, I thought, every January we get a price increase. However, there was also a channel lineup card along with it also. It showed either 2 or 3 new channels we were supposed to get. Great! Now for the good news. Last week they added a couple of new channels. Now I look today and counted the total new ones and were up to 11! gparris 12-17-07, 03:51 PM Great, you get a price increase while NE and SE Wisconsin (to the east of you) are stuck with a price increase too, but got only a couple of HD channels about 2 months ago.
If Comcast could take over TWC Wisconsin like it did with the TWC Minnesota's Twin Cities, I wish they could do it.
Since Comcast is to our south, too, in Illinois, it could become one big coverage area (and no Navigator service aka "Crapagator").
All we can do is beg for the 13 HD channels you have we don't and now, you have Sci-Fi HD and USA HD (and Nat Geo, FoodHD, etc.etc.), too!
Stinks to be in Wisconsin for cableTV service.
I have a buddy that moved to Fridley, MN from TWC Wisconsin and was "worried" there would be "fewer channels" and worse service than TWC here:
WRONG!
I'm staying with family this week and they have Comcast with all those channels you mentioned. Meanwhile I'm stuck with the tiny little HD lineup that TWC provides back at home. TWC better pick up the pace soon or hello DirecTV.

Well I think we're short of bandwidth at the moment. However, they are getting rid of the ValuePac group, so maybe they will pull something like SE PA did and move 2 channels from the VP to digital only.

I don't think Comcast has added any HD channels this year, at least I don't recall any additions or subtractions since I moved back to the area in Feb. I'm really thinking of switching to DirecTV

That's exactly what I did, kept the basic Comcast cable service and internet and actually today I signed up for their phone service, that way I can get the locals in HD(Direct doesn't offer them in my area yet). I must be a unique customer to them, I have digital phone service, internet and basic cable tv service. :)

That does sound odd, usually people get everything. I"m actually thinking of ditching the home phone, I don't see a need w/ us both having cells and that way it frees up more money for more HD channels
Does anyone know what is actually broadcast on the Sunsports/FSN HD channel? The majority of the time I look at the channel on the guide listing, it shows off air. I know that it's a sports channel, but unlike ESPN for example, the Sunsports/FSN always seems to be off-air. It doesn't seem like that channel has a purpose -- perhaps another HD channel could be put in it's place like HD Net, CNN-HD, and other HD channels that other Comcast markets have.

JamesDax 12-19-07, 06:10 PM After 2 emails I got a call from Comcast this afternoon and we discused what was up with Philly being passed over for any new HD channels while all around us it seemed upgrades have been getting done almost daily over the last few weeks. Pretty much what he said was that the Philadelphia area plants were still in the process of being upgraded so that we would have the bandwidth to handle the new HD channels. On top of that they were also still in the process of moving analog channels to all digital so that we would have the room to get then new channels. So, according to the guy I talk to Philadelphia and surrounding areas shouldn't expect any new channels until "early 2008".
So, there you have it.

Surrounding areas as in New Jersey as well? Meredith (Marketing VP in NNJ) did tell me early 2008 as well in an email way back in August/September.
bob2274 12-19-07, 10:31 PM On the other hand, you have had Comcast as your cable provider in southeastern Penna for a long time. When Comcast bought the systems like my local area, they most likely did upgrades to begin with. I have a feeling you'll see an upgrade in the near future that will put you ahead of all of us once again.
For those of you in Harrisburg, maybe they'll also give you all four regional sports networks for your area. (Philly, 2 in Bal/DC, Pittsburgh)

That's odd - figuring they made analog moves here back on 11/7 that made room for at least 4 more new HD's.
Oh well, I was with FIOS TV - they can't add any new HD's for 6 months - then I come back to Comcast - neither can we! Lol...I'm a bad luck charm.
Forgive me if I ask a really stupid question.. why is cable having trouble with bandwidth? Is it because all the HD content are uncompressed? why don't they just compressed it to mp4 like what satellite does?

Because none of the current STBs support it (officially). Also, MPEG4 is not part of the current Digital Cable Ready standard for Consumer's Electronics devices such as TVs and DVRs and going to MPEG4 will pretty much require everyone to have a STB of some sort which the FCC will take a dim view of.
Also, the biggest bandwidth waster is the 60 some odd channels of analog Television cable companies are carrying and most likely continue to carry until 2011/2012 where the FCC has OK'ed the Cable TV Industry to turn off analog if they desire (and I expect most will). Analog will slowly shrink as we approach 2011/2012 and some cable plants may go all digital before then but that will be based on local market conditions because if the a system does go all digital before 2011/2012, the operator has to provide free digital STBs until then.

JamesDax 12-20-07, 12:05 PM Poor Philly. Well atleast we are getting a new skyscrapper. Thanks Comcast.
TravelFan1 12-20-07, 12:39 PM NJ doesn't even have a ComCRAPISTIC skyscraper... pathetic.... Even though I'll loose PBS-HD, which i really, really love, I'll probably switch to Dish in the new months... as this is my only other option. I live in an condo, facing northern sky, so I can only get Dish as there's a MDU install there.

Things might be turning around on this front: http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/12/20/by-the-end-of-2009-mpeg-4-will-take-over-cable-too/
hiphopcr 12-20-07, 01:48 PM I just got Comcast HD. It comes with component cables, but the DVR does have an HDMI input.
Is there any benefit to watching Comcast HD through HDMI or should I stick with component? Thanks!

It still doesn't change the fact that even the newest STBs such as the DCH-3200 MPEG4 is still not a supported Codec (MPEG2 only). Plus every Digital Cable Ready TV ever made will not work with this either. I think the Moto guy is talking about delivery into the head-end not distribution to the customer. In fact, the piece of gear in the picture can be used to transcode MPEG4 from a Satellite to MPEG2 for a Cable TV subscriber.

HDMI has a sharper image, I'd have to recommend it over component. You will see the difference.
cappaweet 12-20-07, 04:08 PM Will Mojo HD ever come out with new programming? I've been seeing the same Timeless and Three Sheets episodes for the past year now.
hiphopcr 12-20-07, 04:13 PM HDMI has a sharper image, I'd have to recommend it over component. You will see the difference.
Ok, I wasn't sure since Comcast HD broadcasts at 720p and 1080i but not 1080p (I think).
chad473 12-20-07, 04:16 PM you'll get different answers when asked which is better, and it really depends on how your tv handles the two inputs and whether they are calibrated (or at least adjusted from the factory settings which are probably terrible). I noticed little if any difference on my set. If you can still get a free hdmi cable from comcast, or one cheap online I'd recommend trying it but for the love of pete, don't let some best buy employee talk you into a $100 monster hdmi cable.
Amnesia 12-20-07, 04:29 PM Ok, I wasn't sure since Comcast HD broadcasts at 720p and 1080i but not 1080p (I think). What does that have to do with HDMI vs. component?
blitzen102 12-20-07, 04:47 PM What does any of this have to do with what the next channel is for Comcast?
How bout PMing the rest of your questions/answers??

Or more importantly, what does this have to do with recent and future Comcast HD channels? Nothing. :)
There is a thread for this:

I swear by my Monster cables and recommend them to anyone. I got a noticeable improvement in picture quality over the generic Comcast cables. Guess you've never tried them.
On the other hand, for anybody who doesn't care enough about their picture to have their set ISF calibrated, I wouldn't bother spending money to upgrade cables.
MODERATOR: please move these post topics to the 'alternative discussion' thread.

BlackwaterStout 12-24-07, 09:13 AM In Morgantown we have been waiting for On Demand for a long time and I was told a few months back by Comcast that we would have it by years end. On Saturday it showed up on channel 199. However, when I try to access it a bob pops up telling me "To Order On D service please call xxxxxxxx). What does this mean? We've never had On Demand service here and I'm not 100% sure how it works. I assumed it was an interactive channel where I could browse through a selection of programs to watch some being free and others costing money.
What gives?

Power cycle the cable box. If that does not work, call the service center and ask.
Detroit area Comcast will get Animal Planet HD, Discovery HD, The Learning Channel HD, & Sci-Fi HD on or about 01/08/08. That will add up to 33 HD channels, with only FOX Business Channel HD and NHL Network HD MIA.

Uh, Bro, there are several Headends around the Atlanta area (like the former Adelphia system that I'm on) adding channels at different times depending upon cable plant capacity.
Merry Christmas to all, and may more HD be on the way soon! Or, I'm going to have to ditch 2 HD Tivos and go back to Directv....

BlackwaterStout 12-28-07, 07:55 AM Power cycle the cable box. If that does not work, call the service center and ask.
I power cycled the box and that didn't work. I then noticed that there was a channel (290) I believe that was called FMOD. It was a free on demand movie channel of some type. When I changed to that channel a comcast logo came up and it said, "Downloading content". After about 3 minutes my box automatically power cycled. I was sure this was going to fix it. However, the same problem existed after it rebooted. So I called their 800 number and talked to a CSR. SHe said that On Demand is not listed for the Morgantown area yet and that it might be showing up in the guide for testing purposes. Shes advised me to check it daily to see if eventually works. So thats what I'll do.
chitchatjf 12-28-07, 08:37 PM so I hope Boston's next 6 will be Animal Planet HD, The Learning Channel HD, Sci-Fi HD, FOX Business Channel HD, NHL Network HD, and the obvious Comcast Sportsnet NE HD!
SciFiHD just showed up on the guide in Memphis today. No program data yet, but the channel is up and working. In time for Atlantis next week, and BSG next year.

Looking for CSN NE HD here in CT also. At least you get the home games pre-empting MOJO, we get absolutely nothing at the moment.
After that I'd like to see TLC HD, Animal Planet HD and Fox Business HD added.

Are you sure you actually pay for all the HD's? I know it's about 4 bucks a month here for the channels over and above the local HD's. Ditigal Starter versus Digital Basic, at least I think it's something like that.
JamesDax 12-30-07, 04:30 PM PLEASE!!! When will Philly get Sci-Fi HD???
oh, and what about HDNet??
I still don't have fricken TBS- HD thanks Comcast in Reading, PA
I still don't have fricken TBS- HD thanks Comcast in Reading, PAYou're missing very little HD content - most of TBS' programming is 4:3 stretch-o-vision. And TBS seems to do a worse job of it than TNT (not sure how that's possible, but it is).
chad473 12-30-07, 07:00 PM yeah we are missing a ton of the channels here, but tbs hd is last on the list of what I want. Until they actually put HD on the channel I don't care about it.

Yes . I believe I do coz I just upgraded when I got my Panasonic 50 in 75U. I got a a 6412 dvr and I also got HBO. The technician actually told me that I would only be getting 3 channels of HD . All local btw..

Yeah there were only three programs on that channel that were of any value. However we did get in in Comcast Boston just in time for the first one. :)

No problem, got the adds last week, and yesterday Food Network HD & HGTV HD were added- but the guide channel won't download as the channel is not labeled yet. I'm on the extreme North Gwinnett County (Winder) headend- old Adelphia. I found those by manually putting in the channels between the current HD and the local HD one by one with my HD Tivo tuners with Cable cards. Fox HD sports coming too- has a test pattern up now.
Any word of Comcast reaching a deal with FX? They show a decent amount of movies and have decent shows like Nip Tuck I would enjoy watching in HD, assumming they do it right and show HD versions of the movies they have. Sometimes when I click info on my remote the Motorola cable box guide will show "HD" for shows like Nip Tuck. Is there a deal in place, or have no negotiations even started?
bicker1 01-02-08, 09:05 AM I've read nothing indicating Comcast will be providing FX HD. That's a real sticky point for me. Not enough to get me to switch, but it surely is a concern.

SciFi-HD went live on the 28th, History-HD was week or more ago.
