this is the first post that i've seen anywhere that they've improved anything lately. the overwhelming consensus with 3:1's is quality drops. I know that's what I've seen. There might be a slightly noticeable quality drop between BEFORE the switch to 3:1 and NOW. However, JUST AFTER the switch to 3:1 was worse than NOW is; it was very noticeable, and now the difference is not very noticeable at all.

They tweaked things. The first couple of weeks after switching to 3:1 there were lots of problems, skips and such. Now there aren't. We noticed this on Sci Fi HD, most.

There have been some discussions about this, perhaps here or on some other forums. I'm not sure how you missed them.
I think what bicker1 was saying is that several channels were bad immediately after the switch to 3:1, but that some of them have recovered significantly after the initial drop in quality. Maybe not to where the level where they started from, but much better than they were.

At my house in the Seattle area, USA-HD in particular took a big hit in quality initially when Comcast rolled out six new HD channels. During the first week after the rollout, I DVRed a couple of Monk episodes that were essentially unwatchable due to macro-blocking and audio cut-outs. I am guessing some tweaks were made to the system, because over the past couple of weeks, I have not had any significant problems with picture quality.

At my house, the picture quality certainly looks much better than it did a couple of weeks ago. Is the picture as good as it was two months ago? I don't know. Maybe I'd notice a drop in PQ if I had two sets sitting side by side (one with the "pure signal"), but right now things look OK on my screen.Yup, that's it in a nutshell.

Legally South Jersey can't get that channel. SNY is an RSN for the NY DMA.

Strictly speaking, South Jersey can get SNY. SNY can negotiate carriage anywhere in the country. However, because the South Jersey systems are not in Mets territory (which may or may not be coextensive with the NY DMA), all the Mets games would have to be blacked out, which would make it a pretty useless channel. So, cable systems that would have to black out Mets games naturally do not carry SNY because to do so, while legal, makes no sense.

That's very true. At this point, here in this area, the only HD channel worthy of being added IMHO, that hasn't been added, is FX HD. My understanding is that that is a contractual issue -- no Comcast systems have FX HD at this time. Beyond that, there is no rush to get more HD channels. The only SD programs I watch today are all on FX HD.

There are two different Jersey systems, each independent of each other. One is South NJ, which is in the Philly DMA. The other is Central/Northern NJ, which is a part of the New York DMA (with some exceptions here and there). Each has it's own thread(I think), but because we both had common issues/rants/etc concerning HD channels this became the thread to post in.

Here is a new reply from Comcast. They never even answered my question on when Will we see HD channel. This company sucks. The only reason I have stayed with Comcast is because of there broadband service.
Dear Daniel,

With 1,300 movie titles available each month, Comcast Digital Cable
customers already have access to more movies On Demand than they can
find anywhere else. Comcast plans to offer more than 6,000 movies a
month, and more than 3,000 of them will be available in HD. Today,
Comcast Digital Cable customers can choose from new releases as well as
hundreds of free movies from Sony, MGM, FEARNet and Encore as well as
movies from premium networks like Starz, HBO, Cinemax, Showtime and The
Movie Channel.

Comcast plans to expand its current HD lineup beyond the hundreds of HD
choices available today, which is already more than any other provider
offers. By the end of the year, Comcast will make available more than
1,000 HD movies and TV shows every month, as well as the most popular
television networks in HD as negotiations are reached. HD content is the
fastest-growing category in Comcast?s On Demand library.

Customers will be notified of HD channel additions as they are
announced. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Sincerely,

Michelle

Customer: When are you going to start offering the apples you promised us?

Comcast: The new oranges from Mexico are some of the juiciest in the world. Nobody has better oranges than us. We offer half of these amazing oranges now, and will soon be offering delicious tangerines. Note, due to the complexity of keeping these fruits as fresh as possible they may only be available in Arizona and California initially, but in New Mexico and Texas shortly thereafter.

Yeah. From the posts that I've read (the source hasn't replied to a question I posed yet) it seems like there are no SA boxes available period, and Motorola boxes are in very tight supply. As in only 1 new box per account.

This is confirmed by someone that works in Central PA and it applies to ALL AREAS EAST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER.

After this first wave of HD channels is finished (my area seems to be the last at 5/15) there will be no more HD additions in any areas unless the areas do one of the two following things:

1) Add new HD channels on empty channels (which is not possible in most areas since they are maxed out)
2) Switch current 2:1 QAMs to 3:1 QAMs

This is due to no Scientific Atlanta STBs available (and SA's refusal to make a separable security compliant SD STB) and a major shortage of Motorola STBs. In Motorola areas people are only allowed 1 new STB per account. Your current ones are ok. They are rationing stock of Motorola boxes right now.

That does create empty QAMs; however, because of STB shortages across the eastern half of the US, they cannot move more analog channels to digital because they can't keep up with the demand for digital STBs.

I don't know what the word is with HDNet, but it remains here in Houston for the forseeable future. I still presume that the folks from NASA may be pushing to keep it on the system here, since HDNet has some exclusive distribution rights for NASA in HD right now.

But our tradeoff comes in that we don't yet have SciFi HD, or the Discovery Networks HD simulcast channels, and they're not on the radar at least for 30 days (franchise notification requirement).

Should be room for more in Baltimore since they are dropping three analogs and adding three HDs. They gave out free digital boxes last year. The postcard announcing the lineup changes mentioned that the majority of customers in the area have digital cable.

Do you think I should bother, or will it just be a customer service rep giving me some crap about how awesome their On Demand selections are?

Do call back. They can sometimes give some valuable information that way...

Locally, our franchise just switched from Insight to Comcast. We still have HD Net and HD Net Movie channels. We received notification of new channels, with new prices, starting April 30 and both channels will still be available in an HD Pak for $6.99 extra.

There was a bunch of new HD channels listed, but in the fine print it says - NEW, coming soon. No word of when coming soon will be - channels like Discovery, TLC, WGN, CNN, SCI-FI, HGTV, History, Food, AMC, TBS, and Animal Planet. I have read on other forums that the AMC channel looks terrible in HD. They are stretching 4:3 images to fill the widescreen, just like TNT does.

WGN-HD would be great for sports fans, if all their games are in HD. I didn't know Comcast had an agreement for the HD channel.

Something else to look forward to. I am concerned about the STB problem. I have two SA HD-DVRs and what if one of them fails?

If anything they'll have enough stock to replace bad STBs, but nothing else to give to people that want more than they have already.

Oh, and per WGN-HD. I think that's the local WGN in Chicago, not the Superstation one.

The Comcast lady did call back, but had no information. All she could say was that they'd come "soon" and she sympathized because her coworkers were BSG fans too.

I doubt it. It's because of the STB shortage no area is going to see any more. Motorola can't keep up with supply...

I'll try to find out more information today, but as of now don't expect anything new any time soon. Maybe when the DCX boxes are released in June/July the problem will be alleviated.

Manassas uses SA boxes and I have 7 of them, I haven't been asked to return any boxes for lack of supplies. There happy with my cable bill that's for sure.

Drawing the line
A documentarian attempts to settle New Jersey's North/South boundary
Friday, March 28, 2008
BY KELLY HEYBOER
Star-Ledger Staff

Where does North Jersey end and South Jersey begin?

Ask a dozen native Jerseyans and you'll get a dozen different answers to where they would draw the North/South line.

The Driscoll Bridge on the Parkway. The Raritan River. Tren ton. Princeton. The Atlantic City Expressway. The NFL's Giants/ Eagles line. The point where you first smell the ocean. The northern most Wawa.

Filmmaker Steve Chernoski has heard them all. The Hoboken resident is making a documentary about the "Where's the dividing line between North and South Jersey?" question-- and why New Jerseyans are so passionate about their answers.

Chernoski, co-producer Alena Kruchkova and their film crew have hit every county in the state over the last year interviewing ordinary New Jerseyans, students and politicians.

Chernoski, 30, says the dispute over the North/South dividing line can be traced back to Ben Franklin's famous quote about New Jersey being "a barrel tapped at both ends," endlessly feeling the pull of New York City and Philadelphia.

In addition to making the film, due to debut at documentary film festivals this summer, Chernoski is working on a book about the North/South question with prominent New Jersey historian John T. Cunningham.

The filmmaker also has a popular blog -- "Where is the line between North & South Jersey?" (nsjersey.blogspot.com) -- where he posts film clips and his research.

After hundreds of interviews, Chernoski has developed a set of questions that help determine if you have North or South Jersey characteristics: Do you go to Wawa or 7-Eleven? Do you put jimmies or sprinkles on your ice cream? Is it a sub or a hoagie? Is it Taylor Ham or pork roll? Do you call the state's capital Trenton or "Tren-on"?

We had a few questions of our own for Chernoski as he prepared to wrap up filming:

Q: Where did this idea of documenting the dividing line between North and South Jersey come from?

A: Well, growing up in Ewing, in Mercer County, I think we ask this question a lot. In Cape May they call us North and in Hobo ken they call us South. It is where the Philadelphia and New York media markets converge.

Also, after college I worked near Ocean City for six years and now I live in Hoboken.

It feels like I've lived in three different states.

Q: Why are New Jerseyans so passionate about this North/ South question?

A: That's a great question. There is an immense "Jersey Pride" all around. Being wedged between two of the biggest cities in the country, New York and Philadelphia-- which are both in other states-- will do that to a smaller state, no doubt. It makes us watch different local news channels, root for different sports teams and affects our accents and language.

South Jerseyans are quick to make the distinction because when they think of the North, they think of the oil refineries, traffic and Tony Soprano roam ing around towns that they've never heard of. They want people to think of the Pine Barrens and the beach.

North Jerseyans are equally apt to point out the difference be cause there is more perceived economic wealth, more mass transit and more of the arts. They feel like they've got the culture. . . and they also challenge South Jersey's claim to beauty. They'll point out the scenic far north and west.

Q: So, where is the line between North and South Jersey?

A: Well, my crew and I went to all 21 counties and had at least 30 people in every county draw their own line on a map of New Jersey. Then, we had Mary Wiley's middle school Advanced Placement math classes in Millburn average the results and come up with a "People's Line." So this question will be answered at the end of our film.

Q: Why did you start your blog?

A: I felt that this issue has been written about before, but never vlogged (video blogged). I wanted to hear what others' ideas were and let people enjoy some of the debate-- and see different areas of the state that may have been unfamiliar.

Q: What's your background?

A: I grew up in Ewing and went to Ewing High School. I graduated from the University of Dayton in Ohio.

After school, I lived in Avalon that summer and was lucky enough to get the job I wanted while working at the beach. I taught ancient history for six years at Upper Township Middle School in Cape May County and now teach a course called "Leadership" in Millburn.

Q: As someone who grew up in Central Jersey, what's your answer to the North/ South Jersey dividing line question?

A: You'll have to see the film, but it is definitely not a straight line!

Q: Wawa or 7-11? Jimmies or sprinkles? Sub or hoagie? Taylor Ham or pork roll? Trenton or "Tren-on"?

A: Wawa (but in Mercer I would have said 7-11). Jimmies. Hoagie. Pork Roll. "Tren-on" (My gosh, I sound so South).

Q: Anything you'd like to add?

A: I'm a huge New Jersey Devils fan. And when I lived in Mercer and Somers Point, I always hated the Philadelphia Flyers more than their traditional rival, the New York Rangers.

Did I also mention that I'm a Philadelphia Eagles fan? . . . I was confused about all of this at an early age.

Where do you think the dividing line is between North and South Jersey? Read the full transcript of this interview, view clips from the film and post your comments at Jersey Blogs (nj.com/jerseyblogs).

Also, my 'chat' representative Jesseca responded to my question about increasingly persistent audio dropouts: "Regarding audio problems, our technicians are aware of this issue and are working hard to restore your service fully."

In answer to my question about sqeezing 3 HD channels into one QAM thus reducing bit rate, Jesseca responded: "I cannot confirm you that information".

I don't believe you!

Why JUST EAST?

Maybe I'm being a little slow here, but what exactly does a shortage of STBs have to do with (not) adding new HD channels?I believe the issue is that to add new HD channels, they'd need to make room by moving analog channels to digital. If they do that, they want to be able to offer new digital STBs to those customers who currently have analog STBs (and would otherwise lose the channel).

Where's the heck is Disney HD, ABC Family HD, & ESPNews HD? They were supposed to be launched today & I don't see them anywhere & that msn.com tv guide must be wrong because there's nothing being shown on channel 197 & 198 in Chicago.

I live Chicago and dont see any of them.

197 & 198 are up. Nothing is showing on them though. It just says "NOT AUTHORIZED: For ordering information, press Info".

Comcast never promised any apples by any specific date.

Actually, last October ('07) in Richmond, we received a postcard about moving 4 analog channels to digital allowing for more HD later this year including CNN HD, USA HD, Discovery HD, History HD, Sci-Fi HD, and TLC HD.

To this date, we still do not have CNN HD or History HD.

Disney HD (197) and ABC Family HD (198) are up in Chicago. What completely shocked me is that Disney HD actually has HD programing on!! Wow. Finally an HD channel with HD on it. I was starting to feel like Malcolm in Jurassic Park when he goes, "Now eventually you might have dinosaurs on your, on your dinosaur tour, right?"

ESPNews is on too (just kidding - Cubs game is blacked out on ESPN2 so they are showing ESPNews HD).

197 and 198 are not mapped yet here, but I think the stream is out there. I just checked using TSReader and I see 2 extra channels.

I e-mailed Comcast yesterday and got the standard copy & paste reply of "HD subscibers are a small minority". They really need to update their b.s. responses. That one was relevant in about 2004. I'm making it clear to them that I'm not purchasing MLB EI because the HD channel isn't there.

This is absolutely the first time I've ever heard Comcast admit to compressing their signal. They've always stated that they don't; that they pass the signal exactly as it comes from the provider:

"Jenni Moyer, a Comcast spokeswoman, confirmed that the company, like all cable and satellite systems, does compress its signals, but it tries hard to maintain the quality.
“Compression is a reality: We use it and other providers use it,” she said. “Our goal is not to have any kind of noticeable impact on picture quality.”

My audio is dropping out every minute or two.

Heavy tiling is happening about every 15 seconds and can last so long that my picture

What is going on?

Exactly 4 days ago I received a new HD DVR box because the previous box was faulty.
With the new box, the problems have increased.

Before anybody asks, these problems were happening with
SD channels and HD channels.

TravelFan, I thought they called it Expanded Basic in our area...at least that's what it used to be called (if memory serves me right).

Nope, the analog packages used to be called the following:

Limited Basic
Standard Service

Then you had the digital packages Digital Starter, Digital Classic and so on and so forth.

DANG I came on here to see if anyone was experiencing the tiling, audio dropouts, and black screens. I am up in the Boston area with the Motorola DCT 6412 and I am experiencing all of the same!

What the heck is causing this? I have called comcast twice. The first call they sent a "refresh signal" and had me unplug the box for a minute. The second time they sent a guy out. Any suggestions?

Here in downstate Illinois we get the Superstation programming and WGN is listed as a "New channel coming soon" in the channel lineup effective April 30 for our Comcast system. About a week ago Comcast customers here in Champaign-Urbana, IL received a mailing piece from Comcast dealing with the new channel lineup. It appears that the Family Channel and Disney Channel were slated to be added before April 30. These two channels are listed as channels already available. The channels that will be added after April 30 are marked with an asterisk with the explanation - new channels coming soon. I am sure how many of these channels will actually be available on April 30.

If you didn't get a mailer regarding the new channel lineup chances are you aren't slated for the other channels on April 30. I do know that I received notice of my email address changeover from Insight to Comcast about a week before my daughter in Lafayette, IN did, so maybe there will be a timelag also in getting the new HD channels. I'm a former Insighter in Fishers, IN (north Indy) and was shocked to see Disney HD and ABC Family HD last night. My first adds since subscribing on Inisght starting in August of last year!

What I want to know is when we will get switched over to a true Comcast offering. This is the first change to our system since supposedly becoming Comcast 3 months ago. And of course we never got any of Insight's additions in the fall because we were going to be Comcast. What a BS situation.

Considering we don't have TBS-HD, USA-HD, Food HD, HGTV-HD, Sci-Fi HD, NFL HD, VS/Golf HD, A&E HD, no RSN and the list goes on forever.....There are about 20 other possible Comcast-carried HD channels I would rather have than Disney and ABC Fam. I'm just surprised that they would add these virtually the day they become available versus all the other ones we're missing out on.

I not so sure that we in Illinois will be getting anymore HD channels than your system as of 5/1. The notation that "NEW channels coming soon" makes it very ambiguous as to when we will actually see these channels. Did the new channel lineup you received come with the same disclaimer?

Hi again,
I am in the SF bay area. This Sunday a tech is coming to visit. Not sure what he/she can do, but this problem is very frustrating and so annoying.

When the tech showed up last week, he gave me a new box and told me that should fix the problem. Obviously that is not the case.
I'm afraid he is going to place the blame on the bldg I live in. Much like someone else said in a previous post.

I checked and didn't find a single thing on WTBS I would watch, HD or not, except baseball. But with the first round of playoffs and weekly games, all in HD (and maybe more, I don't remember), this channel gets more views in my home than MHD and MOJO (minus MASNHD) combined. Someone might want to modify the first post. According to a post on BBR The Weather Channel HD was added in, you guessed it, the Boston area.

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20275594-The-Weather-Channel-HD-launches-in-Boston

Strange that there's no mention of it in the AVS Boston Comcast thread.

But they do have a carriage agreement with Comcast.

I not so sure that we in Illinois will be getting anymore HD channels than your system as of 5/1. The notation that "NEW channels coming soon" makes it very ambiguous as to when we will actually see these channels. Did the new channel lineup you received come with the same disclaimer?

No, there was a separate letter that specifically says "Effective May 1, 2008, the following new HD channels will be added to Comcast's digital packages for customers with HD equipment" and then it gives the list I repeated above. They also gave a list of channels they would get rid of on the same day ESPNU being the only one of interest.

Nope, the analog packages used to be called the following:

Limited Basic
Standard Service

Then you had the digital packages Digital Starter, Digital Classic and so on and so forth.

I don't recall the new package names, but I believe I have that info home and I'll edit this post later with it.
Here, they change the service names so often.
Right now, it is Basic + Expd. = Std.

this channel gets more views in my home than MHD and MOJO (minus MASNHD) combined.

Rich N.

Which is why MOJO allows cable companies to show games from regional sports networks on the channel. The audience is mosly guys, and we're more apt to leave it on that channel after the game and watch a show about beer or something. Without the games, we might not have ever tuned in.

I don't have ESPNews HD & Science HD as of yet in the Chicago area. Also, I didn't know Comcast has added NHL HD & if so where.

Yeah, we don't have NHL Network HD here in Detroit either. Other than that, the only other one we're missing is ESPNews HD. Science HD was added here last week.

I was assuming that NHL-HD would be available in Comcast's biggest hockey markets, but if Detroit doesn't have it, that's not the case.

Tell me about it!! I'm not a Detroit fan, but i'm a huge hockey fan. It makes way too much sense for Comcast to consider it!

Science HD is now in a few areas, and NHL HD is up in Boston I believe.

Just in Boston and Brookline where all extended basic channels are digital only.

The baseball game on TBS today looks great. One of the big mysteries in my TV lifetime will be- how come they can't figure out how to show anything else in HD. I truly understand that it was probably impossible to do when they had to launch the channel and show all the HD games last October, but they've had six months and seemingly made no progress.

Yes.

It is likely it will also happen locally soon. IMO the sooner the better (though i think Digital starter tier channels should be unencrypted Those above limited basic generally are not :(

I'm in central NJ- on what was formerly patriot media but converting to comcast- supposedly april 10 they will stop using the patriot name.

We had 24 HD channels. In January they added 8 HD channels. They tell me another 8 are planned for May. Sorry- all stuff that's already listed in the first post so nothing to ad to that front.

But I thought I saw other mentions of groups of 8 being added other places earlier in the thread.

So my question is-
Is there some magic reason why they add in groups of 8? Or is it just coincidence?

It's not like things are getting expended by 3/2s so it's not the 2 to 3 channels to a qam directly that is the reason in this case.

Has anyone out there seen "GAME HD" pop up as one of the channels near GAME1-GAME14? MLB Extra Innings is showing 1-3 HD games a day, making good use of one HD channel. All my local Comcast office says is "we're not offering it in this area".

I was flipping through and caught part of their syndicated 'My Name is Earl' which was stretched SD. Is it me or does that make no sense? That show has been filmed in HD since day 1!

Our channels were added about 10 days ago, but some of the channels are still blacked out (some we use to get). Does my box need a full reset? All the boxes in our house have some HD channels blacked out like UniHD, ANMLHD, and NGCHD. Not sure why though.

You mean they dropped the Analog Locals in the Boston area, and it is likely to happen in SE PA soon?
If so, any reason our area would change any faster than others?
Because I haven't heard anything about this. (It would be great, though.)

As far as I know, no city/town in the Boston area is dropping analog locals...yet anyways.

It seems like we have hit a brick wall when it comes to adding new HD channels lately. For awhile the Boston area was among the first areas to get new HD channels. That isn't happening anymore (still don't have TLC HD for example). It makes me wonder if the Boston area needs to move more analogs to digital before we can get more channels.\

Either that, or Comcast is too busy figuring out how to shove 3 HD's into 1 QAM channel :(

Boston and Brookline have just locals in analog yes.

IMHO this is overdue, though i would prefer that Digital starter be unencrypted by within the 220-500mhz area.

I am really confused about what's going on with Comcast in Knoxville, TN. They have Speed HD on the On Demand, but we don't have it as a channel. I didn't think they could or would do that. It doesn't make sense. We've had Fox Sports Net HD which shows nothing most of the time, nothing now since college basketball is over. While flipping through channels last night, I saw they replaced it with FX HD. I don't know if it's temporary until college football comes back or what. I understand the Fox connection, so it could be temporary or not.

Is there actually FX programming showing on it? My place in TN is on the Knoxville system, but we do not get the Fox Sports Net HD channel on our system. I would think with baseball season there ould be alot of available programming in HD. I wonder why they would remove the Fox Sports Net HD channel.

That's very common; where I live, we get programming from several HD channels On Demand that we don't get in our lineup (yet). Basically, they're trying to give you some additional content but don't have room for a whole new channel.
