View Full Version : Comcast HDTV
blitzen102 10-31-06, 12:07 PM From the story:
When the deal was first announced last year, Comcast said its first TiVo-brand DVR service would be available in "mid- to late 2006." That timeframe is still accurate, said Comcast spokeswoman Jenni Moyer, and will be available on a limited basis later this year, with a broader rollout planned for 2007, she said.

I just got it too. The movies have a pretty sizeable bug. It's menu can be accessed by going to channel 166, which used to be Sundance West. (Still no MHD, however.)
There is also an HD section for Cinemax, currently empty, in preparation for Star Wars.

And this time the programs are in the onscreen guide, so I guess it's here to stay. Aren't any of the music videos in 5.1, only the commercials? That sucks! :(

You must be speaking of the Groundhog Day Channel!
Wait a month from now when they've shown the same damn concerts 50 times over. I prefer to call it the ugly people's who has the most Tatoo's Music Channel - Oh Yes the MTV Music Awards run infinitely as does the Music with Altitude Concert - it seems to run everyday. The HD is nice looking but damn it needs to be Titled the RERUN LOOP CHANNEL!!! What a Ripoff! Cannot Comcast get an HD Channel that has more than 24 hours content? I am not joking they will run the same damn daily content over and over and it becomes a waste of a channel - ever hear of Chinese Water Torture? This is it after viewing that channel for the past 2 months or so and losing INHD2 where I'd wait a week or two for the reruns this thing is worse.
They took away INHD2 and gave us this even worse rerun CRAP. How many times can you listen to the same music - an Ipod holds a library of Music this Channel keeps feeding the same stuff like it's an old walkman.
This station is a joke they recycle the same friggin content over and over and you may once in awhile hit something you like and then you'll see it again perhaps even the same day - this station is almost like walking into BestBuy and watching the same loop forver!

Shees.....
hondo21 11-01-06, 05:35 PM So you're saying you don't enjoy watching Bon Jovi with Sugarland twelve times a week? :)
Actually, I have fallen asleep on the couch and woke up after 3 a.m. a couple times with this channel on and there are HD music videos that play then. Maybe you could start DVR'ing that block and watch it whenever. But I don't know how repetitive it is. Maybe they play the same 20 videos over and over again.

I wish they'd separate out the different genres though - at minimum seperate the country from the rock. An hour of "Country-Western Vidoes" - an hour of "Rock Videos" for example.

Marcus Carr 11-02-06, 01:54 AM Check this out:
this was just in the paper today
effective on or after December 5, 2006 comcast will make the following program changes...
the following channels will be added to the digital classic teir
Fox Reality Channel 159, National Geographic hd 773,
DAYSTAR 233, A&E HD 752,...

raidbuck 11-02-06, 10:03 AM As far as I know, National Geographic is a go in a couple of weeks, bandwidtrh permitting. A & E is a surprise though.
Unfortunately, A&E HD is a simulcast of A&E, which means we have to DVR anything we want to watch, just like NGCHD will be.
A&E HD is now available in San Diego (TWC I think) and Minneapolis. I did read a complaint that almost all the shows are just upconverts and not HD.
I guess this means that HD is now in the mainstream and more basic cable channels will provide HD simulcasts. And that is good news.
I hope in the future that Comcast will offer a service like VOOM, premium HD channels with general content without commercials. You could subscribe like you would with HBO.

I didn't read all the previous posts, so if someone else already mentioned this I apologize.
Fearnet is up on Comcast in the (north of) Chicago area. Some movies are HD, but most are SD. All the movies are onDemand, even though it isn't accessed through the onDemand menu. Not bad if you're into horror. :)

Me too. But all the SD offerings are cropped or pan & scan so I'll never watch them. However, there are 3 titles (in NJ) that are HD: CARRIE, DRACULA, and FLATLINERS. None are in 5.1 audio.

How could we expect anything else? MHD is simply a microcosmic representation of all music today...rehash, recycle, repeat. One great thing, though, if you missed whether or not Pink's nipple slipped, you don't need a DVR to find out. I don't have to worry about any new HD channels. We still don't have TNT or ESPN2 or U-HD or MHD and we lost inHD2 over a month ago. Its great only having 3 national channels.

Marcus Carr 11-05-06, 12:32 AM The official word on INHD2:
INHD2 is history as of 01/01/07
"In Demand may try to put a magic spell on its HD networks.
The supplier of pay-per-view and on-demand programming decided to merge its two HD channels, INHD and INHD2, into one Jan. 1, president Rob Jacobson said. That would, he added, create a best-of HD service.
Some cable operators already dropped INHD2, which shows some exclusive IMAX movies and concert events that will shift over to INHD.
What will the new channel be called? That will be announced “sometime next year,” Jacobson said. But there’s a “pretty good likelihood” that INHD will be renamed Mojo. That’s the name given to blocks of original HD programming that currently run from 9 p.m.-midnight Wednesdays and Sundays, featuring such shows as Wall Street Warriors, Dr. Danger, After Hours with Daniel and London Live.
In Demand is looking at adding a third night of original shows and possibly a fourth of Mojo before it changes the name of the service itself, Jacobson said."

I know, who cares about the 'cable' HD channels, when we don't even have all the Broadcast channels in HD!!!! (All but CW here in the Bay Area--even have the local independent that does myTV stuff in HD.)
For me I'd rather watch Al-Jazeera than Fox, though I'd really like if BBC did a news channel here in the US, rather than the 3 hours at 6 am pacific time. Or even get CNN International.

I detect joy in your post and must wonder why? First, the 3416 has been quite problematic by many reports. Second, why on Earth would anyone want CN8 in HD as opposed to just about anything else? Have you seen the schedule of drek on that channel? What a waste of bandwidth, IMO.

DeathOpie 11-06-06, 08:37 AM They definetly made some changes to the guide software here. When you hit the DVR button now instead of going directly to your recordings you go to a menu that you can choose recordings, schedule, and a couple of others. I like this change since I often want to check my recording schedule and getting there before was a pain.
They also changed the FAV software when you're in the guide. Now when you hit it you get a list of your favs instead of taking you to that channel in the guide. I don't like this change because I used to use the favs to navigate to different parts of the guide. I can still do this but it takes several extra steps.
We got Fearnet, but no new HD networks, but luckily in my area we have just about everything others have already.

In case anyone's keeping score, a recent PRNewswire article announced that UHD and MHD will be coming to Washington State on December 15th on channels 660 and 661 respectively. Also, the regional FSN began airing HD games inserted on iNHD (NBA- 37 Sonics games, MLB- 65 Mariners games, and College Games TBA). Versus teamed up with iNHD to show some NHL games also.
A couple of analog channels were moved recently to digital only service to make up for some of the room on the new channels. Most likely won't see any more HD unless more analog channels make the jump.

Whether its 2 or 5 doesnt really matter does it? Knowing Comcast they will just add something like another sports channel in HD or, be still my beating heart, something like FoodHD. Any hopes I had that they would add some "Entertainment" type channels are gone. Then again so am I at this point. For about $10 less than what Comcast was soaking me for just HBO/Sho , Dish is giving me everything available in HD.
Comcast with HD locals and 2 Movie channels = $115-$25 a month discount Cost $90 plus tax
Dish with HD locals and All movie channels=$84 after $20 a month special & rebates

jrusnak 11-07-06, 01:54 PM They'll add whatever will be of most interest to subscribers -- not any one particular subscriber..
Not really. In a poll of subscribers taken a few months back, movies were the number one preference, with sports coming in second. So if they add the Food Network over an HD movie channel, that may appeal to some...but far from most.
bicker1 11-07-06, 02:59 PM Polls aren't the issue -- what drives customer purchases is.
raidbuck 11-07-06, 03:26 PM Also, what drives new HD channels are those that Comcast can get through negotiations without forcing an HD tier. That's why we don't have HDNET. So they were able to get an agreement with MTV for MHD and absorbing the cost even though it seems to be a lower priority than some others.
Other carriers can just add a new channel to a tier and raise the tier price, but Comcast chose another direction several years ago and must compete now based upon that decision.
So we get 3 HD movies in Fearnet but must wait for other anticipated goodies such as NGCHD.
Rich N.
bicker1 11-07-06, 04:35 PM Yup, that's a good point, Rich. In that case, having one extra HD channel to count without having to charge extra for HD (overall) sells more customers than the alternative.

The whole point of Digital Classic, as it relates to HD customers, is how many of you would even have Digital Classic if it weren't for HD?
Few, I am guessing.
Do you think an HD-only tier would cost less than Digital Classic?
I don't.
So, if you would happen to want both, count on paying double.
I happen to have Digital Plus for Encore, Sundance, and BBC America, but don't watch much of Digital Plus, or any Digital Classic non-HD, for that matter, so I would go for the HD tier instead, if there was one; but don't count on saving money. ;)

And when Mr. Cuban was participating in a thread (maybe this one?), I suggested he consider Digital Plus (it is $5 more than Classic), if he didn't already. He didn't say whether he had discussions on Digital Plus or if he would consider it.
He apparantly didn't even remember that the Comcast tier with HD is called 'Digital Classic'; he called it the 'Base HD tier' or something to that effect.
Encore-HD OnDemand is part of Digital Plus, so the HDNets wouldn't be the only channels there, ok the only linear channels, but so what. ;)

Many systems require the equivalent of enhanced cable (Standard cable with a digital box) and digital classic to get even HD locals.
I think boston would have the room (We still have INHD2 PLUS all other other national HD channels Comcast carries)
If bandwidth is the issue as he has stated, and not price, maybe it will be one of the 32-35 HD channels we will have by this time next year.
32-35 HD channels in 1 year? keep dreaming!
Comcast probably has 15 - 20 channels in most markets (remember to take the premium channels into account). Are there even 10 - 15 more channels to add? I guess the old VOOM channels are there, but would Comcast really use its resources for those channels?
Are there even 10 - 15 more channels to add?
Take your pick (these are besides the 20 HD channels I already get):
Nat. Geo.
FoodNet
HGTV
A&E
TheMovieChannel
WealthTV
Versus
TheHistoryChannel
Hallmark
BBC-HD
TMC
Fox-HD
NFL-HD
New Comcast HD sports channel
HDNet
HDNet Movies
GoTV
Sleuth HD
29HD
Penthouse HDTV
These are other than the VOOM channels. Some of these are "proposed", and I'm sure 2007 will see more. Also see: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=164671
Thanks for the list.
Not to quibble too much, but aren't TMC and TheMovieChannel the same thing?
Is there really a Versus HD channel, or do they just have occasional content? Not that it would be any less than ESPN2 - who needs "The Ocho", when The Deuce is showing juggling in SD?
I guess I'd just like Comcast to bring us up to speed with other areas that get UHD. Having had MHD for a while now, I'd gladly trade.
hdtvjunkie247 11-12-06, 07:54 PM Is there really a Versus HD channel, or do they just have occasional content?
Versus doesn't have a fulltime HD feed. NHL hockey is currently the only thing that they show in HD. These NHL games from Versus can be seen on INHD.
Not to quibble too much, but aren't TMC and TheMovieChannel the same thing?
Sorry; meant TCM (Turner Classic Movies).
Marcus Carr 11-13-06, 12:01 AM 32-35 HD channels in 1 year? keep dreaming!
I'm not dreaming. That is what Comcast's Steve Burke has said. That's total HD channels, not new HD channels.
I have 20 HD channels now (counting Special Events). They could move about 6-8 analog channels to digital and that would give them enough room.

Let's hope he means it this year. They've been focused on On Demand the last couple of years. Now maybe they will pay more attention to linear HD channels.

It still says 'TMC', and it is there twice. :)
Many systems require the equivalent of enhanced cable (Standard cable with a digital box) and digital classic to get even HD locals.
I know in some areas to get Digital Classic, one must have Standard, and others it is just Basic.
But, HD Locals are part of Basic, and, therefore, they rent the HD STB with Basic; IIRC, this is mandated by the FCC, if not, then I must have read that it is Comcast corporate policy.
It sounds like some rogue systems or CSRs falsely making up pre-requisites; I heard of this early on with HD, I thought they would have stopped it bu now, I guess not.
All of this info is in their prices/services card.
BTW, how was your point relevant to my post? :)
Steve Burke said the same thing last year. Please provide the quote.
According to the note that came in my Comcast bill last Friday, here in Middletown,Ct on 12/14 where getting ESPN2HD on ch203. But it seems where losing INHD2 on ch207 the same day.I just hope the "dueceHD" carries enough hd content.
Please provide the quote.
What everyone seems to be referencing is JWHIP's interview with Burke (http://www.tvpredictions.com/burke091306.htm) back in September.
BlackwaterStout 11-14-06, 07:23 AM I believe that each analog removed and moved to digital frees up room for 5 HD channels.
Thats incredibly interesting to know. Now if the cable co would move all 75 analog channels to digital then we could support 375 new HD channels! lol.
They are going to eventually have to move them all to digital anyway right? Is the reason they don't do that because the people with basic analog cable would throw a fit because they needed a box?
bicker1 11-14-06, 07:44 AM IIRC, this is mandated by the FCC, if not, then I must have read that it is Comcast corporate policy. The latter, not the former. That means that they may actually have exceptions to the policy.

GoIrish corrected me - it's 2 HD per one analog moved to digital (or removed altogether).
BlackwaterStout 11-14-06, 12:34 PM Okay cool. Either way they could add 150+ HD channels :) Anyone know of a list that would show viewership numbers for a typical analog cable system. Are there stations that consistantly rank at the bottom? cspan2? Religious channels? etc?
Those of you loseing INHD2 early, but like the programming, dont fret. Everyone will lose INHD2 at end of year. INHD 1 & INHD 2 are merging into one channel to be renamed in 2007. Reports that I have read and heard, list the new name for "INHD" is more then likely going to be "MoJo"
Vincent Kennedy 11-14-06, 01:08 PM I would have been happy if comcast in my area (Northern Virginia) could have gotten me CinemaxHD last weekend!
The only HD channels I am getting are:
ABC
NBC
CBS
FOX
HBO
Showtime
ESPN
Discovery
Comcast Sportnet
I guess 9 channels isnt terrible, but I need my:
Cinemax
TNT
USA
and whatever network is carrying Battlestar Gallactica in HD
It would be real nice if I could get SciFi in HD but that's not an option anywhere. WAKE UP SCIFI CHANNEL!!!! Start broadcasting in HD!

USA and SCI FI are part of the NBC Universal cable portfolio. Select programming from those netwroks including Battlestar Gallectica is carried in HD on Universal HD. However, Battlestar Gallactica is shown in HD months after it is shown in SD on SCI FI.
I believe that each analog removed and moved to digital frees up room for 5 HD channels.
Is this correct? I thought I read somewhere that it was more like 2-3 HD channels when doing this. 5 would even be better.
Anyway, the good news is that Seattle Comcast has finally officially announced that we will get UHD and MHD on Dec. 15th. Yeah, Yeah... I know many of you have had these channels for months, and it's no big deal, but I'm extremely happy to see Comcast finally adding more HD in our area. :)
Now, back in Sept they moved 2 analog channels to digital and gave us one new HD channel, CW-HD. So if the above quote is correct, we've had the bandwidth to add UHD and MHD all this time. We've been missing out on BSG and Firefly etc...
What takes so long to add these HD channels when other areas have had them for months? Local contracts and such? or does it really take months of preparation to get our system ready to add these new HD channels?
blitzen102 11-14-06, 02:43 PM Is this correct? I thought I read somewhere that it was more like 2-3 HD channels when doing this. 5 would even be better.
Yumpin yimminy, someone already corrected me. I'll go back into my original post and edit it so hopefully there is no more confusion.
bicker1 11-14-06, 03:30 PM Battlestar Gallactica is shown in HD months after it is shown in SD on SCI FI.And without Closed Captioning.

Well, then I guess it isn't Comcast corporate policy, if there are exceptions. ;) :D Just a general guideline.
While, I know CSRs have tried to sell Std. and Digital Classic just to get HD Locals, I never heard of people who objected, that didn't eventually get it with just Basic, by showing the price card. But, I can't aware of all Comcast systems, just what I read on AVS.
I guess it is possible that they won't rent out the HD STB with just Basic in some area(s), but one could use their own QAM TV or STB, unless they are an exception and encrypt the HD Locals; I have heard of this on rare occasions and when they told Comcast they corrected it. But, again, I am not aware of all Comcast systems. :)

HD LOCALS are part of Limited Basic!
They have to allow one to get pay channels like HBO with JUST Basic! How do you get pay channels? A BOX!

I think I got it!

Since Comcast uses INHD for its NBAHD games, you'll see even less programming on the combined channel. And if you don't like beer or bars, MOJO isn't much. A far cry from when the channels started in 2003. They took their competition with HDNET seriously then.
I look at INHD mostly for major sports (NBA, MLB) now.

bmoney017 11-15-06, 04:55 PM Wow im impressed that we appear to have gotten these channels before everyone else.
So far nothing on FSN HD, except for the pistons game tonight, and A&E isnt showing any HD until CSI tonight. Nat. Geo has been showing some good shows in HD. Hopefully they dont repeat their shows all the time.
We are getting UHD, MDH, and Fox Reality (standard) on December 14th. ComcastSports HD is coming on January 3rd.

Washington, D.C. (November 8, 2006) -- Comcast is considering starting a new High-Definition channel for sports, TVPredictions.com has learned.
The channel would likely feature high-def broadcasts of the National Hockey League from the Versus channel and tournament action from The Golf Channel.
Comcast owns both The Golf Channel and Versus, formerly known as The Outdoor Network
Confirmed on Comcast Detroit, as of today:
A&E HD

TravelFan1 11-16-06, 11:10 AM IN Comcast of NJ II(Union) system, in the morning, around 6:00am yesterday, they had moved INHD2 to 201. In the evening, though, it was describing 201 as HDSE and it had no programming around 10:00pm. In other words, Comcast of NJ II lost INHD2. we got MHD on 209, though.
willwhdtv 11-16-06, 11:19 AM TravelFan1 - In Comcast of Central NJ they did the same for us yesterday. however, last night around 7:30pm we had the MSD-HD feed on ch201 showing us the Knicks and Wizards game. That should have happen to you also.
TravelFan1 11-16-06, 11:25 AM will, I can't confirm that, because I was watching the space show from 9-9:30, then I watched some recorded programming - question: Do you recall if the guide at that time(7:30-pm-end of game) reported that they were broadcasting the game?

Two months ago Comcast ran ads in the Newark Star-Ledger,Asbury Park Press and other North and Central papers(basicly the NY market) that Ch.201 would be MSG-HD,Ch.206-INDH/FSNY-HD and Ch.207-INHD2/YES-HD.We're still waiting.
How did you find this out? Not that I'd expect to see either UHD or the Comcast Sports channel here in Denver any time soon. We got MHD a month or so ago. Yawn.
I found out about MHD and UHD being added to our area both here on AVS forum under the local Seattle Comcast thread, and also I've been hounding Comcast with emails requesting more HD. So, they finally sent me a response saying they were going to add MHD and UHD next. Then later, I read on the local forum that these channels where coming in Dec. with an official announcement. As for Comcast SportsHD, there was a message on the box last night, and that was actually the first I had ever heard anything about that channel.
The messages from Comcast seem really inconsistent. Sometimes they leave a message on the box telling us of changes to come, but a lot of times there is no message about changes. I find out about changes either online here in the local thread, or just by complete surprise, I'll discover the changes while watching TV.
Marcus Carr 11-17-06, 12:26 AM Lately I've been seeing messages running on Weatherscan about the addition of new channels. They've used it to announce MHD, Fearnet, and Fox Reality. If you don't watch Weatherscan, you won't get the messages. Earlier this year they sent messages to cable boxes about ESPN2 HD and UHD.
Of course now I'll be checking Weatherscan every day for Nat Geo, A&E, and Golf/Versus, just in case.
Well just got home and tonights message on the box is about MHD, so that's 2 messages in a row! Still nothing about UHD. Maybe tomorrow ;)
Marcus Carr 11-19-06, 11:30 PM Comcast recently removed MTV2 from my analog lineup. That makes room for two more HD channels.
FusionRx 11-20-06, 12:59 PM Anyone know of any lineup additions for the Twin Cities area??
Right now, the guide says INHD2 on 201, but it is showing CN8 news (???)
Perhaps they have given us StumbleUpon HD. :)
They are labeling it INHD2+ but they are just upconverting CN8 which is completely useless. For those of you who don't get CN8 you have missed out on nothing. It's pure sh--. I understand that it is probably going to be used as a special events channel but considering that Comcast just signed with NGHD and AEHD it seems like their customers would be much better served to show one of those channels rather the upconvert the CN8 amateur programming. Of course HD NET is my first choice.

Actually there was a New Years eve special in High def. I was clicking between CN8HD and ABC through the night.
birdies 11-23-06, 10:12 AM Hi all,I live in southern PA and had Suscom which was bought out by Comcast.I just received what our line up will be and these are the HD channels we will have:

LonghornXP 11-23-06, 01:32 PM Did you have HD Net previously?
Yes he did as Suscom had a contract with HDNet before the Comcast switchover and Comcast will carry it until the end of the original contract and/or until they get the new contract.

That would be great, I used to have adelphia and we just got switched over last week too. Currently we only get ESPN 1 and 2, three locals (CBS, NBC, ABC), and HDNet and HDNet Movies. I rent the HD box to get my locals since I don't have room for a large enough antenna to reach baltimore or harrisburg but I really feel like I'm getting ripped off with such a small selection. I would kill for FOX in HD, I really miss having House and Prison Break in HD like I did over the summer when I set up a temporary antenna outside.
BobColby 11-26-06, 01:44 PM Poster "kenvt" made an interesting observation in the Boston Comcast thread (which I've verified) - starting on Dec 1st, the program guide listing for 881/INHD is identical to the one for 882/INHD2. Now the INHD site is still listing separate schedules for the two channels on that date, so either this is a guide glitch or Boston Comcast is getting ready to do some transitioning - to what, I'm not sure.
Faceless Rebel 11-27-06, 01:10 AM Comcast Seattle sent me some messages a week ago saying they were going to add MHD and UHD in mid-December and Comcast SportsNet HD in January. I'm not sure what Comcast SportsNet HD could possibly show around here, Seattle is Fox Sports Net Northwest territory.
jgNJ, a small correction:

That is true here also. INHD2 was often pre-empted for Yankees in HD. My "complaint" is that when there is no special event going on, CC should show a real hi-def channel not upconvert an SD channel. CN8 is junk and upconverted junk is still junk wasting bandwidth.
TravelFan1 12-01-06, 09:02 AM n the sports section of the Star Ledger today:
Games from MSG, FSNY, YES and NFL Network will now be available on channels, 201, 206, 210 and 211
Applies to: Comcast of NJ II(Union), Plainfield, NW, Jersey City, Meadowlands, Monmouth County, Ocean County, Central NJ, Toms River, LBI, Mercer County(Trenton) and SE PA(Lambertville).
I am hoping that means that, in addition to the 8 NFL regular season games, we'll be able to watch the Games of the week and, in addition, the College Football HD broadcasts from FSNY. We'll see, but great news for sure!

201 has been showing CN8 (some lame philly local channel upconverted)
206 is INHD
210 ???
211 ???

wow! they're really getting busy now that FIOS is ready to be turned on.
i'm at work but was thinking 210-11 were UHD or TNT-HD or something to pre-empt and forget to flip the switch on.
it appears we just got THREE dedicated RSN HDTV channels (inhd we always had but we did lose inhd2 for mtv) :)

UPDATE: It was a guide glitch after all, we still have INHD2 for the moment. There's talk of it going away on 12/14 in this area, and of course the two channels are supposed to officially merge on 1/1 - so something will be happening in the near future.

Yeah, for you folks up in North Jersey where FIOS will be available. I notice they aren't doing squat down here in South Jersey where FIOS won't be available for quite some time!
hdtvjunkie247 12-01-06, 06:35 PM Alright ch.210 and ch.211 were added in Brick,NJ not too long ago. So this appears to be the new HD lineup down here.

No 236 (WPSG-DT [UPN-HD])?
hdtvjunkie247 12-02-06, 09:04 AM maxman, WPSG SD isn't available in Brick, so obviously we wouldn't get the HD version. Plus with the exception of local sports in HD, it shows the same primetime CW programming as WPIX HD. Comcast of Toms River has WPSG SD, but not the HD feed, since they fall into the NY DMA like Brick Township.
The only local that we don't have in HD currently is WWOR-HD (My Network TV), but the only reason I'd want it is for the Yankees games that they show in HD. The soaps are atrocious.

That's the one I meant. It used to be UPN (I grabbed the info from the Comcast website). Here it's listed as WPSGD on the guide.
hdtvjunkie247 12-02-06, 09:30 AM Ah, I see. Comcast might add WWOR-HD to the lineup in the NY DMA when it gets closer to baseball season. WWOR plans on carrying 21 regular season Yankees games in HD next year,so the demand for it will probably be greater around that time. Currently only the 8-10 PM block M-S of Desire & Fashion House is actually in HD on this channel.
So your ARE getting channel 236?
hdtvjunkie247 12-02-06, 09:57 AM So your ARE getting channel 236?
No. I was just citing what I've read to be HD on WWOR. Sorry for the confusion.

Did you happen to notice if they had the Rangers game on last night. 210 and 211 have appeared here in central jersey, but there was nothing on those channels last night (I don't think they were 100% active yet)? Just wondering if we can expect any MSG2 content.

To be honest, I don't think that the Rangers game was in HD, since they were on the road against the Sabres. I know that FSNY when it was broadcasting it, wasn't showing it in HD. MSG2 & FSNY2 content isn't in HD, even if its a home game.
Brick pretty much has the same digital lineup as other areas. We get all 5 RSNs ( CSN Philly, YES, MSG, FSNY & SNY) in both SD and HD. We have a fulltime dedicated channel for CSN Philly on ch.200 and games from YES,SNY,FSNY & MSG are shown on one of the 4 stations used for local sports in HD (CH.201,206,210,211). The only thing different pretty much is the analog lineup.
any idea when the guide will show programming content for Ch210 & 211 in NJ? it's always empty and impossible to use the HD-DVR in advance.
spyder696969 12-08-06, 01:20 PM You guys have it lucky. Here in Utah, we only get these (extra-cost, premium movie channels in bold):
650 Showtime
651 HBO
652 KTVX (ABC)
653 KSL (NBC)
654 KUTV (CBS)
655 KSTU (Fox)

661 Starz!
662 Cinemax
663 Discovery
664 INHD 1
665 MHD
667 TNT
668 ESPN
669 ESPN2
Barely anything...and we're supposed to be a second-teir priority city! :(
NFL-HD is currently pre-empting INHD for the week old Cowboys/Giants game. What the hell is up with that??? (and it isn't in Dolby 5.1 even) Is Comcast testing or what?
BobColby 12-14-06, 07:02 AM Boston area got NGCHD (on 821) this morning, replacing INHD2 (882)

711 NBC
713 PBS
750 HBO
751 SHO

775 INHD2
776 DISCOVERY
777 NFL
So far we've kept NFLHD network, and they are still broadcasting programming on INHD2. Not sure what the deal is there. After the swtich to Comcast FOX and MYNetworkHD were added. So far I'm loving Fox but the MyNetwork looks like it only shows a bunch of crappy "judge judy" types of shows. Would've rather had NGC.
raidbuck 12-14-06, 08:05 AM Boston area got NGCHD (on 821) this morning, replacing INHD2 (882)
Sheesh, Boston gets NGCHD to replace INHD2 and Baltimore gets MHD. I'm sure the majority of viewers would rather have NGCHD.
Rich N.
Al Shing 12-14-06, 09:54 AM Seattle finally got UHD and MHD this morning.
I'm constantly amazed when reading these HD threads with Comcast at how many HD channels you guys have. Time Warner in Columbus is just about the worst source for HD programming...I'd give anything to have the option to go with Comcast while many of you rip them. Consider yourselves lucky!
bicker1 12-14-06, 10:17 AM Sheesh, Boston gets NGCHD to replace INHD2 and Baltimore gets MHD. I'm sure the majority of viewers would rather have NGCHD. I sure would, but I think we're in the MINORITY, not the majority.

But this is the place to air our complaints. Sure, Comcast is one of the best cable companies for HD, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't say something (at least to this community) when we see something we don't like. And Comcast sevice is very different in different locations. I'm sure there are many Comcast areas that have less HD than you do with TWC.
And I don't know what situation in the Baltimore area dictated choosing MHD over NGCHD to replace INHD2 when both were available to our regional area to choose.
Rich N.
raidbuck 12-14-06, 10:38 AM I sure would, but I think we're in the MINORITY, not the majority.
Based on what I've read on this forum, from those receiving MHD and those who just expressed an interest, I believe a solid majority would prefer NGCHD over MHD.
But I have no empirical evidence to support my claim for NGCHD being more desired than MHD. Maybe one of those mythic "Focus Groups" that Comcast uses to determine we don't want HDNET, just another semi-HD horror channel like Fearnet.
Rich N.
bicker1 12-14-06, 10:50 AM But this is the place to air our complaints.I think that's a misunderstanding. My feeling is that this is the place to share information about how to get the MOST out of the service, the available programming, etc.
Here are some better places to voice complaints -- where doing so might have some impact:
(1) Comcast customer service.
(2) Vote with your wallet -- unsubscribe or reduce your subscription, and let them know why.
#2 is actually the most compelling way to have your complaint heard and internalized.

But I have no empirical evidence to support my claim for NGCHD being more desired than MHD.I have no evidence either, so that's why I think the most prudent approach to the question is to defer to the folks who do have such evidence, and have made the decision that they've made, providing MHD over NGCHD, in places that have only one of the two. That's why I said we're in the minority. Clearly the evidence indicates that offering MHD is a better proposition for the cable company.
Maybe one of those mythic "Focus Groups" that Comcast uses to determine we don't want HDNETOf course whether we want something is not the only criterion. Rather, what's really important is how much we want it; how much (dollar) value we derive from getting it; which, in the end, boils down to how much we're willing to pay for it. HDNet suffers in that comparison because HDNet wants more from Comcast than Comcast feels we are willing to pay for HDNet. Again, in the absence of either of us having real evidence, I think we need to defer to the people who actually do have that evidence.
golferadam 12-14-06, 11:06 AM Regarding NGCHD vs. MHD, couldn't it just be that it costs Comcast less to carry MHD than NGCHD and it has little to do with what viewers want?

Comcast is well aware of my personal desires as to which HD services I want.
Voting with your wallet is certainly valid. However, much as we may complain about this or that, for many of us the local cable company is the only way to get HD beyond the local affiliates and cancelling service for relatively trivial reasons (such as NGCHD vs. MHD) is not in my cards.
I would pay extra for HDNET but I'm sure that is a minority opinion, and irrelavent since Comcast doesn't have an HD Tier. Comcast realizes that the satellites are greatly expanding their HD offerings and are responding. And I have confidence that my area will get NGCHD in time.
Perhaps you are right about complaints, but at least it is a place to discuss issues and maybe learn why Comcast (or in this case its local regional management) makes certain decisions.
Rich N.
raidbuck 12-14-06, 01:03 PM Regarding NGCHD vs. MHD, couldn't it just be that it costs Comcast less to carry MHD than NGCHD and it has little to do with what viewers want?
Well, it could be, but Comcast has agreements for both, so it is not Comcast's view on which a local Comcast area should show. Rather, it is a local decision. I thought our area was holding INHD2 for NGCHD since MHD was available for months before it was added.
Rich N.
spyder696969 12-14-06, 01:34 PM After months of having that POS station, MHD, Salt Lake City viewers finally have gotten NGCHD! Hooray! :)

I remember reading somewhere they were CLOSE to an HDNet contract with the understanding it would be part of the Sports and Entertainment tier.
I kjnow it was here in this forum and it was posted by someone in the know.
Marcus Carr 12-14-06, 04:39 PM I have very high hopes for this to happen because it seems that Comcast will be adding both HDNet channels into none other than a new digital tier. Right now most areas have a Sports Pack tier and some have a Digital Premier Pack. Simply put Comcast will merge the Sports Pack and/or the Digital Premier Pack into a new tier which will be called the Sports and Entertainment Pack. This is scheduled to be completed in December and I've been told that both HDNet channels will be included in this new tier. They are also trying to get NFL Network into this tier as well.
I hope I'm not wrong and I do wish Cuban would chime in and tell us more about this if he can.

ABCTV99 12-14-06, 05:57 PM thought it hasnt been officially announced rumor has it a revamped ESPNEWS will debut sometime late next year in HD on the airwaves. No word as to who might carry it (though i'd place money on FIOS for sure given their current deal with Disney).
Bur- Lee 12-14-06, 08:11 PM NH finally got NGCHD today! Thank you Comcast.
DeathOpie 12-14-06, 08:34 PM It's on here in Western Mass too.
WilEAdams 12-14-06, 08:34 PM Indianapolis got both NGCHD (199) and A&EHD (200) this evening. They weren't on here earlier today, but they are now.
All we got here in South Jersey was notification of a price increase of about 5% come January.
Are NGHD and A&EHD simulcasts of the regular channels?
Are NGHD and A&EHD simulcasts of the regular channels?
Yes they are simulcasts of their SD counterparts.
AtlantaHDFanatic 12-14-06, 11:07 PM Assuming that the positive sounding rumors of HDNet being added sometime soon arent true, I wonder if we could at least convince Comcast to add test patterns for HD set calibration to onDemand somewhere. There are quite a few programs I would watch on HDNet, but one of the main things I want is a way to calibrate my TV input for the HD DVR.
bicker1 12-15-06, 06:47 AM Regarding NGCHD vs. MHD, couldn't it just be that it costs Comcast less to carry MHD than NGCHD and it has little to do with what viewers want?As I said earlier, "whether we want something is not the only criterion. That's a fine choice to make. Just recognize that you're communicating to Comcast that what they're offering is acceptable. Every company that works with the mass-market knows that their customers would rather have more for less. That's not news to them. What they need to know is how much are things worth to you -- that is what drives what they offer to you.
Perhaps you are right about complaints, but at least it is a place to discuss issues and maybe learn why Comcast (or in this case its local regional management) makes certain decisions.Absolutely. I suppose a lot of folks aren't clear about why certain HD channels aren't being offered, or why they might put advertising in the program guide. This is a good place to ask those kind of "Why?" questions, and get answers that make sense. What I find puzzling, though, are the folks who come here asking those "Why?" questions, and don't want to get reasonable answers to their questions.
bicker1 12-15-06, 06:56 AM I remember reading somewhere they were CLOSE to an HDNet contract with the understanding it would be part of the Sports and Entertainment tier. There have been several "reliable" reports along those lines, in the past, and about other channels as well, which haven't panned out. Generally, I would take such prognostication with a grain of salt, at least with regard to HDNet, due to the personalities involved. It's just not predictable in the slightest. The deal will be done when and if it is signed -- any time before pen hits paper it's nothing better than a probability.
Assuming that the positive sounding rumors of HDNet being added sometime soon arent true, I wonder if we could at least convince Comcast to add test patterns for HD set calibration to onDemand somewhere. There are quite a few programs I would watch on HDNet, but one of the main things I want is a way to calibrate my TV input for the HD DVR.
INHD broadcasts test patterns, though not as regularly as they used to. Check the listings early Sat/Sun (around 6-8 am eastern).
spyder696969 12-15-06, 01:10 PM Are NGHD and A&EHD simulcasts of the regular channels?
Not in Utah. The programming is entirely different. It's the first week for NG here though.
TMilner 12-15-06, 01:44 PM Here in Morgantown, WV we've just switched from Adelphia to Comcast.
702 CBS
704 ABC
706 FOX
707 MyNetworkHD
711 NBC
713 PBS
750 HBO
751 SHO
752 C'MAX
753 STARZ
769 FSN
770 HDNET
771 HDMOV
772 ESPN
773 ESPN2
774 INHD
Can't help but notice that you still have HDNet and HDMov. In Houston, per some agreement between TW and Comcast, we will be switching over from Time Warner to Comcast sometime this spring. Can only hope we have the same experience of keeping HDNet like you did up in WV.
UHD was just added to Comcast in Denver over the last few days. No official notice from Comcast - it doesn't show up on the channel line up (which hasn't been updated since before they dropped InHD2 for TNT) and there have been no messages on the cable box. Lack of notification is par for the course here.
But we actually have 18 HD channels spread between 650 and 673. Four are premium, seven locals, DHD, InHD, TNT, ESPN, ESPN2, MHD and UHD. I hope they start filling the gaps with NG and A&E, if not HDNet.
eric.exe 12-15-06, 06:56 PM The info from the guide never shows on INHD anymore. Anyway else have that problem? The channel doesn't have a name, just channel 206, and every show is titled "To Be Announced" with no info. It's been doing this for a week or so.

bicker1 12-16-06, 08:46 AM What STB do you have eric.exe?

Bur- Lee 12-17-06, 08:57 AM I wish TMC was available in HD. Its not the best but it is a premium station I'm paying for as part of the movie package but never watch in standard def.
I also wish one of the independent movie channels was broadcast in hd.
I talked to the lady at the front desk at my local comcast place here in south central PA and she said that we would not be getting a new channel lineup until 3rd Quarter 2007 :(
BlackwaterStout 12-18-06, 07:20 AM Here in morgantown this weekend my INHD was showing the NFLNetworkHD while my INHDII was totally blank. Crappy part is I already have NFLHD. Oh, the program guide still showed regular programming for for both INHD and INHDII.
Not sure whats going on there. I suspected to lose INHDII, but I didn't expect to see NFLHD on my INHD channel. :(

Butchered in pan and scan of course.
sikoniko 12-18-06, 08:30 AM Butchered in pan and scan of course.
and commercials...
Scarpad 12-18-06, 09:10 AM In western Mass Comcast has added the National Geographic Channel on Ch 821
Butchered in pan and scan of course.

It's TNT, folks. Of course it's going to have commercials. Be glad it wasn't in stretch-o-vision. It WAS in HD. If you don't want pan and scan, get the DVD. Oh, but if you get the extended version (which I believe TNT showed for the first two, but not ROTK), you'll have to get up and change DVD's in the middle. That's as bad as the commercials, isn't it? ;)
Can we keep this on topic? If you all want to piss and moan about TNT content / execution, do it in another thread. Some of us are interested in NEW channels.

That seems to be at odds with this statement:
Comcast-owned cable network Versus is launching a high-definition channel in January 2007... Initially, the channel will be carried on all Comcast systems and a deal has been done with DirecTV.

I suppose if your system just doesn't have the capacity you may not get it. We supposedly have capacity here in Denver, but we're 6 months to a year behind the "leading" Comcast systems as far as getting new channels, so we'll see what happens.

Since all or almost all systems have or had INHD2, it's possible that everyone will get it. Hard to say since some have already gotten "replacement" channels.
raidbuck 12-18-06, 10:31 AM Hmmm. Versus sounds like Saturday Morning ESPN2 in HD (hunting, fishing) plus golf and NHL. At least the scenery ought to be pretty.
I wonder if the Baltimore area will get Versus vs. NGCHD in January. More and more areas are getting NGCHD now.
