I don't think there is a way to tell.

Once you put the update disc in.... it will read the disc, then the door will open and tell you to take the disc off and hit the up button on the remote.. Door will close, dvd player will do nothing for about 20+ sec. then it will shut off then reboot back on...

If your DVD player did all of that..... update is done...

I just wanted to reply to Arpeggio. Yes I had the exact same problem. After I updated I would get the occasional 'This disc is not playable in this region' or some such message. Especially annoying when it is a region 1 disc in a region 1 player. For me it was the x-files series which I own every season of. So I checked about a million places on line and then found this site.

lgregionfree tripod com /2005/ menu1 htm

If you can'g figure out the url please google lgregionfree

What you have to do is download the zip file for the 6000. Burn a cd with the exact folder structure and make sure the disk finalizes. I did not include the text file that is in the root of the folder which explains what i'm relating here. The entire folder size is only a few K. Once inserted and loaded it will bring up a menu for changing the regions on the dvd player. Region 0 is the one your looking for. When your done hitting 0. Hit the pause key. It will exit. Pop out the disk. Cycle the power and you are ready to roll
Yes this works on the LGDVB418 but every one must assume responsibility for their own actions, God knows how someone could mess this up but all things are possible. The nice part about this though, is it is not a firmware update but simply a hidden menu.
Peace

I bought a refurbished DVB418 from geeks (dot) com, and was very disappointed that the picture quality was far inferior to the DVB511 I was currently using (both scaling up through HDMI). Upon further investigation, I realized it was badly "smearing" the picture, but only in 720p mode (my native screen size).

I'm sending it back for a replacement, but I was wondering if anyone else has seen or heard of this phenomenon? I hope it's just a bad unit, and not a faulty design....

I've had one of these for 2 months now and I love it, I mainly use it for divx/xvid and the only problem I've had is that it doesn't seem to like to read rw discs that have been reused 40 or 50 times, new ones work perfectly. I applied the firmware upgrade for the sound sync problems-worked like a charm. Gotta say one thing thou-I only use the componet output cause my hdtv doesn't have either a hdmi or dvi input. I just rip any R1 discs that I have so I can play them in 1080I. Has anyone noticed on a lot of dvd's that if you try to play them in progressive scan there is a rolling band of distortion ? Anyway-great player for avi!!

I just purchased the LDA-511 a few weeks ago for $140.00 at brandsmart. This is one of the very few players that is problem free, for me. It plays everything DVD-R, DVD+R ect. I had the Zenith DVB318 which was a great player, but I thought the $190.00 I paid was too much. I tried several Samsungs, 841,850 and 941. The 941 was the best of the Sammies and the PQ was fantastic at near 1080i, but had many problems in which I ultimately sent it back for a refund. I did not notice a difference in PQ with the 841 and 850, between 480p and 1080i via component. I think the LDA-511 offers the best PQ via component using a near 1080i resolution, then all of the players I tried. The 511 will upconvert non HDCP movies to a near 1080i, but it will scale back to 480p with movies that are protected. I found that by burning the HDCP protected movies, that I am able to play them in near 1080i. Is there a firmware or hack that will allow the 511 to upconvert HDCP protected movies? Burning them is no big deal, however it's time consuming and can be a little costly if you burn lot of movies as well as altering the picture quality from the compression.
Problem with the 511 is the slot loading feature vs the tray the 418 has, it can and will scratch "flipper" discs.

I have a question. I just bought this DVD player and when I turn it off with the tray open, the only thing that happens is it says "off" in the display. The tray stays open. The red power light doesn't come on. It kinda freezes up. I can't turn the player on. I can't do anything. I have to physically unplug it and plug it back in. On my old Panasonic when I hit the power button the tray closes and then it turns off. Anybody else have this problem? Is this normal on this player? Is it defective?
thanks.

I bought this piece of junk. It never worked. Lg wont do anything about it. I only paid $105 for it, and it cost me $36 so far shipping it back. When I get it back it doesn't work. So I thought I would share this. I am a home builder building about 50 homes this year. We spec the appliances. We were going to use LG this year. Now we are not just because of this litle piece of crap DVD player. That 50 refrigerators, microwaves, dishwashers, ranges, clothes washers, and clothes dryers. LG would probably comp me anything I wanted for myself, but I don't care. I hate junk. This DVD player is pure junk.

I'm sorry you feel that way about LG players, I have the 418, 511 and the LRA-516 recorder, not a problem in the bunch, best damn divx/xvid players out there. I work for Best Buy doing inhome repair of appliances and you know what? They make a damn good front loading washer also, it's a little pricey but a good machine. Jeez-what an attitude.

I second that zrdb. My 418 isn't perfect but it's pretty spiffy for the price. I also have an LG DLP HDTV and it's been pretty awesome.

Question about this player...When I play a widescreen DVD (Batman Begins in this case), I am using the HDMI port on my 51" widescreen Toshiba HDTV, the two buttons on top of the player (small silver buttons, one is HDMI and other says Resolution), I put HDMI on (the green light comes on, and little screen says 1080i), then when I put the resolution to 1080i using the little resolution button, the screen gets filled up completely, but there is a big chunk of the picture missing, at 720p (which my HDTV scales up to 1080i) there is a 2" border on the top and bottom of the screen, but the picture is all there, and finally, the 480p choice, its all there, screen is filled, BUT its not 1080i (which is the rez I want)...now am I missing something? Is my HDTV's upscaler and DVD players upscaler conflicting with each other?

PS I have the latest firmware installed, and the LGRegion free mod applied

Does the firmware fix this?
I recently bought the Denon AVR 3806. I hook my LGDVB418 into one of the HDMI Ports for switching. Now, whenever i turn off my dvd player the resolution resets back to 1080i. I then have to stop the DVD player, hit the resolution 3 times, in order for the DVD player to work correctly.

Just bought this player new off e-bay, it wont play thru HDMI, Component works fine, tried 2 HDMI cables same thing, build date is May 2005,all i see is when turning on is a static screen for less than a minute then nothing, cant get into the menu either...hdmi seems DEAD!!

Update, loaded the 531 firmware and now hdmi works, B.L.E. doesnt have a adjustment even in 480p mode like component has.
PQ is real nice just has more bug's than the 511 i had,but it hasnt skipped yet either, plays DL fine so far.
Main reason i like the LG's is there excellent zoom letterbox feature, no other player ive tried has this........

This player's available for cheap on woot.com today, refurbished. I know people have had problems with it, but for this price it may be worth a look.

Now if only someone could hack the firmware to allow upconversion of protected content over component . . .

Hi all.
I just bought the LG LGDVB418 (build date: May 2005) and so far I like it very much. I got it mainly for it's ability to play Divx. I have run into one problem though. I have a few files that are encoded in Divx ver.6. The player will play the audio portion but not the video. So far any of the vers. up to 5.xxx work just fine. I've looked around for a few days and can find nothing relating to ver.6 and this player. Ive contacted LG but have yet to hear back from them. Just wondering if anyone here has this issue too.

thanks

Is there an audio problem with this player?

To quote someone on the 511 thread:

"I cant use bitstream out on dolby digital, it's the same as a toshiba 4980 has a loud screech sound thru my plasma speakers using hdmi
So that means i have to listen to pcm sound on my receiver...bummer dts is set to bitstream works fine"

Is that juts sound through the plasma tv speakers? If I use the coax on the back to a receiver, will it be okay? Thanks.

Yes if you use the coaxial or optical out sounds fine, ive been using component out now that my DVR is working for hdmi now.

OR ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO FIX IT SO I CAN WATCH DVD'S IN 720P OR 1080I

after installing firmware, if you get region error follow this reset procedure which also happens to show firmware version.
with no disc in the unit....
go to setup....aspect ratio....highlight 16:9.... press 1,3,9,7,1,3,9 enter
should get blue info screen
press enter to reset and region error should be gone.

Ok, I think I am going to give up. I am still having the audio sync problem. I requested the firmware update from LG. I then requested another one since some in here say there are 2 versions to this disc. I also downloaded and burned the one on here. ALL have still left me with the audio sync problem.

Here is a detailed list of my setup.
LG DVB418 player
media, NEW, Divx, DVD-R all show audio sync problems. Divx not as much
receiver JVC optical out for DD 5.1
TV Sony XBR60
cables: Monster cable HDMI to DVI cable
DVD setup, I have the player setup to work with my receiver, I am not using the player to controll the speakers. Also, I due have audio cables ran into the TV so I can have audio if I do not want the receiver on. I still notice a audio sync problem thru those as well.

When playing disc's, I will rewind movie 2-3 secs and then press play and the audio problem solves itself. It is not all the time, maybe 4-6 times a movie
Any thoughts???

Guys I got a refurbished version of this player (DVB418) from Ebay...

Came, I got it installed, worked and output 1080i over component right from the box (isn't this strange, I was expecting I had to do the firmware update???).

Manufacturing date is September 2004 on my unit...

Anyway, worked great for 2 movies straight, and now after ~5 hours of use it won't read any disk, it will just struggle to allign its laser/etc., lots of noise inside (kinda whirrling up and down trying to position I assume) and no read :-(

Any ideas, could it be I got a defective one?

THANKS!!!

I'm having a weird problem with my DVD player. Sometimes when I switch to it over HDMI, I get a screen full of blue and pink striped lines. Perhaps this has something to do with the HDMI handshake? Power-cycling the DVD player will fix it most of the time. It's set to do 720p upscaling.

Has anyone seen this before?

I don't believe the blacker than black setting (B.L.E.) is available when you are upconverting at all, regardless if it's component or HDMI. Check your manual, since that was the case for me, but I have the 531 instead of the 418.

thanks zeta for the confirmation. I read that about hdmi upconverted not passing blacker than black in the secrets review and it made sense that the component upconversion would be the same since it was using the Faroudja chip instead of the mediatek.

Just a quick update and first impressions of this player. I bought it on ebay as a refurb pretty cheap. My intention was to have it as a back-up to my zenith 318 and have a player that I can take to friends houses that will upconvert over both component and hdmi.

Updated with with the 531 firmware posted earlier in this thread (around page 7). Worked perfectly. Turned off macrovision using the hack also posted in this thread (around page 7). The player upconverts via component, passes blacker-than-black. I did just a quick calibration (reset black level) and it looks good.

I don't have an hdmi capable display so this player is just a hedge against obsolescence. I'm very happy with this player. Maybe this weekend I'll actually watch some material using it.

Best,
jeff

I am considering this guy now that flee-bay sells them cheap. Don't want the Oppo, the next over $100 dvd-player will be either HD-Dvd, Blue-Ray or combo.

In my living room I am now using Neuneo dvd player. I also have Samsung HD841, US Logic, and couple of Philips 642s. As you can see all my players are divx/xvid players. I love Neuneo with AMLogic chip as it plays most divx/xvid out of all my dvd players. However, Neuneo's regular dvd renderance is just average.

Thus a couple questions:

1) Faroudja chip here, does it do upscaling? or is it only activated on S-Video?
2) I have a Faroudja chip in my plasma already - is 2-Faroudja-chips-in-line One too many?
3) Can you Macrovision off over components alike old Liteon LVD2001 or first Zenith 318 with protected DVDs?
4) How is the picture over component at 1080i generally?
Thanks

theficus
03-13-06, 08:42 PM
I can answer a couple of your questions.

The Faroudja is used for upscaling at 720p or 1080i. It uses Mediatek for 480p and 480i. You cannot upscale all movies at higher than 480p over component, only those that aren't copy protected.

You can find more info here: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=all&type=DVD+Player&manufacturer=72&maxprice=0&deInt=0&mpeg=0

As far as which scaler to use, be it on the DVD player or TV, use whatever looks better. :) If the DVD player outputs to 1080i or 720p (whatever matches your TV's native resolution) then there's no reason for the processor in your TV to do much work, as the video has already been processed.

As far as I know, it does NOT upconvert copy-protected DVDs over component. There is a hack to disable Macrovision, and I believe that may allow for this, though -- any clarification would be appreciated. I plan on moving from HDMI to component in the near future and if possible would like to maintain the upconversion over component.

WRONG. the dbv418, ONCE UPGRADED WITH THE CURRENT 531 FIRMWARE, WILL UPCONVERT VIA COMPONENT. To get it to upconvert via component on copy protected discs, you simply follow the hack to turn off macrovision. Turn it off, push the upconvert button and you can upconvert via component. I have one, I have upgraded it and it works.

With that said, what's the hack to turn off Macrovision? I think it may have been posted earlier in the thread, but I can't find it.

that is exactly what i wanted to clarify, on old players such as Liteon LVD2001, all you had to do was to turn off the Macrovision and every dvd would be upconverted, irrespective of copy-protection etc. My Samsung HD841 hacked with Samsung 745 euro version firmware also upconverts through either dvi or component, but the picture over component is just aweful.

I just got a response from a member on another forum stating that he believed his 2004-made 418 did upconvert ANY dvd over component without any hack.

but you don't need to seek out older 418's to get upconversion. As I wrote above, update the 418 with the 513 lg firmware, turn off macrovision and you're good to go over component. I have a zenith 318 and I think the picture with the 418 looks about the same on test patterns and real material.

but you don't need to seek out older 418's to get upconversion. As I wrote above, update the 418 with the 513 lg firmware, turn off macrovision and you're good to go over component. I have a zenith 318 and I think the picture with the 418 looks about the same on test patterns and real material.

Mine was off to begin with for macrovision, i.e. wouldn't upscale over component. Entered hack and got OK something. I didn't pay attention whether it was M or H. I think it was M. exited and retested upscaling. It upscaled over component. that was all I cared about. I didn't worry about what the cryptic message meant.

so to extrapolate a bit, OK M or OK H means feature is disabled, maybe ;-)

Default means factory default, (on) therefore you want OK (off) if you want to upconvert via component. Hope this helps, good luck.

I've downloaded the ZIP file from LG, burned the contents onto the CD per their instructions, but get nothing when I put the CD into the DVB418 other than "Check Disc". Is there something I'm missing (and yes, I do feel like an idiot asking this, because I'm certain it's either answered somewhere else in this thread or it's an incredibly simple fix).

The file system on the CD was:
\FIRMWARE\UPGRADE\LG\LV8070261.MIH

snarkyboy

I answered my own question - the file system should be "LG_DVD\FIRMWARE\UPGRADE\LG\LV8070261.MIH". Would be nice if they set that up in the ZIP file like a normal human being might.

Hi all,

Got a question for both LG DVB418 and LDA531 owners (since with exception of the video DAC, they appear to be the same player).

I've been told the 480i performance through component, even with the 531 firmware update, has serious problems. Is this something that has general agreement, or is it more of an individual situation?

Thanks in advance for your observations/opinions -- Trevor

Before getting an HDTV, I used this player over 480i with component and it worked without any problems (other than the occasional lip sync problems that some have reported).

I just got this player, mostly for fun as I had more than enough players already. I have loaded the LG LDA531 firmware and can upscale over component so I assume this means I have upgraded the firmware correctly. Is that correct and the turning off Macrovision hack was not possible with the old DVB418 firmware? I have it connected to a Sony KV-30XBR910 in place of a Zenith DVB318 I have used for sometime at 1080i. I plan to watch something tonight and see how it compares.

It looks as good as the Zenith DVB318 at 1080i over component to me. This player seems to make the DVB318 irrelevant now since it does so much more with DVD-A and has HDMI rather than DVI. It is even less expensive. I am going to use the DVB418 since it has the refurbished warranty. Great player for the price.

when you unzip the firmware file it contains "LV8070261.MIH"

do you burn just this file to the root directory of a CDR or do you leave it buried in all the folders that it comes with in the zip file?

what is a .mih file?

Bud-man

just use nero and burn it as a cd iso, the player will read the file and load the firmware.

Chris Gerhard
05-26-06, 09:48 AM
I don't have Nero, but just used the Windows XP send to CD function, sending the entire folder after unzipping.

I had to reapply the Macrovision hack to get component upscaling working this morning. I had changed some menu options and assume that was the cause. After powering off and powering back on, it still retained the component upscaling.

RTK, i think by just applying the listed commands back a few pages or in the 511 thread it can be made region free without the latest firmware upgrade.

cut-n-paste from link I gave on the last page:

make sure that the first folder is "LG_DVD" without quotes. Some extracting programs extract it so the first folder is "FIRMWARE". then burn it as a data disc, and it should be fine. the target should be: LG_DVD\FIRMWARE\UPDATE\LG\whatever the firmware file is (i forget). Also, when its updating the firmware (step 5) it will seem like nothings happening; the firmware update process takes a minute or 2, so just leave it and it will reboot.

And the hacks curtesy of Bud-man:

Heres a list of hacks from videohelp, if they work i dont know, the info page does we know that........

Greetings,

I bought a refurb DVB418 on Ebay a couple months ago (EmilyandLily) and yesterday received my second replacement player -- and so far it actually seems to be working properly :). (Course, I haven't checked the audio outputs yet!)

Bought a new 37" Westinghouse TV three weeks ago and was watching letterbox DVD last night (both purchased and home authored +R DL from LBX LD) using HDMI and 720p upscaling -- the picture was excellent. The results with 720p were much more shaky with component (literally), but maybe that'll improve when I eventually do the LDA531 firmware update mod. I'm holding off on any mods until I'm sure the player is good.

The vertical zoom is perfect for correcting the LBX aspect ratio on the Westinghouse. It's too bad it doesn't have horizontal adjustment so I could fix the 4.5:3 "Standard" AR the set produces :(. The Westinghouse does have a couple display deficiences, but the price and picture are very good :).

A Follow up:

Last time I fired up the 418 the HDMI was issuing 480p -- not sure how that happened, but I noticed on the TV screen a single dashed white horizontal line just right of center at top of screen. I've never seen that before and it isn't present with either 720p or 1080i, so I'm thinking it has to be an idiosyncracy with the 418. Can anyone corroborate this being a normal HDMI 480p output issue?

Also, a question regarding the firmware updates. Is their any reason to go with the last 418 update instead of the 531 update? I'm under the impression the 531 is preferred, but if someone could shed some more specific light on the subject, it would be appreciated.

Thanks much -- Trevor :)

PS. Noticed the white crush on the HDMI 720p -- nasty!

Can't comment directly on the dashed white line issue except to say that others reported it before.

Also, using hdmi I can't say too much about what the 531 update buys you. Via component outputing 1080i, the new firmware is required.

Thanks Jeff,

If others have reported it, then it's not an issue for me. I'm just trying to make sure there's nothing wrong that's specific to this individual player :). If there is, then I would need to exchange it yet again :(.

I understand the new firmware also corrects some issues with HDMI white crush, below black, and above white levels. I guess I'll find out for sure when I install it (the CD is standing by:)).

It sounds like the LED sled assembly needs replacement -- they don't last forever. You could check with LG service about the cost of repair, or as suggested, you could just opt for another player.

I just got one from "EmilyandLily" on Ebay and it was a real hassle (two defective, third looking OK so far). If you don't mind the hassle (lots of phone calls), it may make sense.

So if you think your unit is clean and you don't have kids that dirty it or whatever your reasoning is, ALWAYS CLEAN LASER FIRST!
I recently bought a LGDVB 418. Upgraded it with LG531 software and tried to play a +RW disk and a +R disk. They would not even be recognized. This unit was BRAND NEW! I played a store bought disk and it skipped a little. I was ready to pack it up and send it back. I thought I would try to clean the laser with a lens cleaning CD that has brushes. I cleaned it using the cleaner disk and then retried the disks. To my surprise all disk now work. I had the same problem with a Liteon DVD recorder. I now clean the laser first on all NEW ITEMS. Always clean your laser with a laser cleaning disk that has brushes when you have your first sign of trouble reading disks. You will be glad you did! This goes for anyone having a problem with any CD or DVD player/recorder. Hope this helps. Condensation alone can cause the problem. If after cleaning your unit with a brush disk it doesn't work, only then can you consider it to have a problem. Hope this helps someone. I can't emphasize enough the importance of using a brush cleaning disk.

Hi guys,

I've just started seeing a peculiar misbehavior with my DVB418 (three to four weeks old), It will be playing normally and then suddenly spin down (you can hear the motor) and immediately spin back up and continue playing. There is no pixelation or other problem with the picture (sound is OK too), just the momentary pause behavior (not a dead stop -- just spindown and immediate spin up). It might get through a disc without doing this, or it might do it repeatedly -- just a few seconds apart.

Anybody see this behavior? Anybody have any idea what the solution is?

Thanks -- Trevor

Trevor,
You say "There is no pixelation or other problem with the picture (sound is OK too)", but then you say "just the momentary pause behavior".

so are you saying the picture sort of freezes, or does the disc just spin down. If there is no freeze, momentary or not, then don't worry about what the disc drive is doing. If it's momentarily freezing then that's a problem.

thanks for clarifying,
jeff

Hi Jeff,

I'm describing the picture & sound when I say "momentary pause behavior". The sound of the disc spinning down and then back up is simply a noticable part of the behavior. My reference to lack of pixelation or other misbehavior is simply pointing out that nothing appears to be getting damaged in the bitstream and presented as such, it's just a pause-like behavior. Couple nights ago several pauses actually lasted an appreciable amount of time, perhaps as long as a second.

Thanks -- Trevor

That might explain one occurance (though I don't think the drive normally spins down and up for a layer change -- unless we're talking LD side change :)), but multiple times and only seconds apart is probably reaching a little :).

I see no reply from Bigbit so here are three:

1) Phillips Magnavox-Laser Lens Cleaner-bought about a year ago so probably @ Best Buy or Circuit City

2) Pfantone-Compact Disc Laser Lens Cleaner-bought many, many years ago so probably @ Sam Goody or The Wall

3) Geneva-Turbo Disc CD Lens Cleaner-bought same as 2)

The first two are brush types and the third accelerates the air flow around it to blow dust away, however the tray on the 418 is too shallow to use it.

On my Mitsubishi VS-50111 there are both DTV and Component inputs. My cable HD DVR was installed to the DTV. I installed my 418 and a DVD-RAM player to the Component initially using a Philips manual switchbox but suffered severe distortion.

Tried Y cables next and this worked well except for lowering the max volume through my TV speakers. All combinations of three imputs to two connections (DTV & Component) produced the same results.

So after three months of living with low volume, I finally picked up a Home Theater Receiver (receiver only) with so many connection possibilities I'll be busy for a long time playing with it.

Y- cables = $20
HTR = $253

Here is what I have gleaned from the many, many pages of this thread along with my tinkering with the hacks on my players:

1) The firmware version is on the SYSTEM INFORMATION page which can be viewed by entering the following:

go to Setup/video/TV Aspect/16:9 and press 1-3-9-7-1-3-9-ENTER
should get blue info screen, all reset on exit

HOWEVER-This will also perform a factory reset of some settings you may not want to change. (see 3)

2) Here is the link to get the firmware IF YOU NEED IT!

http://ca.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp
or
http://www.turbofroggy.com/images/dvb418_firmware.zip

3)The hacks work with the two firmware versions I have on my players (v1.3491 and v1.385201). If you want to upconvert via component and play copy protected DVDs, you need only to have the HDCP and MACROVISION set to OFF. If you are using the HDMI connection, the HDCP setting must be ON.

If you need any further information, le t me know.

Good luck.

Finally decided to install the 531 firmware update into my 418 and all of a sudden I'm seeing a short dotted white line on the top edge right of center (720p HDMI). Am I overlooking something? (Update went without incident -- rev# verified.)

Thanks -- Trevor

Thanks bob for your help. Is the region hack posted in page 12 or is there some other hack. Videohelp.com mentions that region hack for LGDVB418 requires a new firmware to be burned. Is that true?

This is the region hack:

Region Code:
Pause,3,1,4,1,5,9
0=all

I tried it once but it didn't work for me. I'm not sure if I entered it correctly and it may require the new firmware.

I have only one DVD for a different region than 1. I played it once on a small region free player that I bought and copied it to a -R. Since I have never seen any other non-region 1 DVD that interests me, the hack is not important to me.

Best regards,
BOB

Don't remember anyone reporting success with the region keycode hack. Seemed like everyone was saying it didn't work. The firmware mod is supposed to be reliable.

Maybe it belongs somewhere in the SYSTEM INFORMATION hack/screen where the Region Code is displayed?

I see that using 1080i with HDMI only on my panny pm50, if i use upconverting thru componet i get a right side 1/2" shift.
I just leave it at 480i and let my ED plasma do the rest.

When i first got the 418, it was brand new and hdmi wouldn't even work, the 531 firmware enabled my hdmi.

So i dont know if the top shift was there before or not, 50u series of plasma's are known to have a unfixable underscan problem.

My display is a Westinghouse 37W2 LCD. I haven't noticed any change in position on the screen -- unless the picture has shifted down by one line and I'm now seeing garbage that was hidden before. I use 720p because the picture quality is better if the TV doesn't have to downscale.

It's too bad there isn't a way to save the current version of these player's firmware before installing updates. That bright dotted line-segment is very distracting after it not having been there previously.

My original firmware handled the HDMI just fine (refurb player). I could try switching to the final DVB418 firmware update instead, but I'm under the impression I might lose the keycode hack ability if I do. (Not that I'm currently using any, but it's nice to have the possibility :).)

Where do you find this final 418 firmware?, only firmware i've seen is the 531 firmware.
I e-mailed LG about it but i doubt they would send it to me.
You can always flash back to the 531 firmware.

Hi there,

I ran into a couple problems running the 531 firmware, so I've switched to the 418 instead. One was the broken white line I mentioned above, the other was a loss of apparent picture dynamic range and resolution. I tried performing a recalibration with DVE, but my picture just wouldn't come back. After installing the 418 FW, I was back in business -- lovely picture again.

Since your old firmware was messing you up with HDMI, you may want to at least try the 418 firmware. The HDMI works perfectly, and judging by my experience, you'll get a better picture as well. Frankly, I'm wondering if the reason for the picture diffrence has something to do with the 12 bit DAC in the 531 Vs the 10 bit DAC in the 418. In any case, my picture is 100% back and looks like I'll stay put.

Drawback is indeed, the keycode hacks don't work -- so no component upscaling with this FW. It's a shame I never tried the hacks with the original FW to see if they would be accepted, but I suspect it was actually the same version as I just installed.

I originally read right through this thread (before buying the refurb player) and found dowload links for both copies of firmware. I see a link just above that is at least named the same as the one I downloaded. My copy was a zipped ISO file -- just burn with Nero and follow instructions.

PS. Just downloaded using the DVB418 firmware link above and the received zip file is the identical size. Almost certainly the same one.

I too bought one of these from Emily and etc on EBAY. My westinghouse 37w1 has only one dvi input so I temporarily set up this player using component and it upscaled non commercial dvds to 1080i looking good. I just got an HDMI switcher and various HDMI cables and dvi from hdmi converter jack to set up properly. Yes I see that there is a shift of picture that leaves an inch or so black on the right hand side of screen, but tolerable.
However with hdmi out to monoprice HDMI switcher then output switcher to westy dvi input
the LG dvb418 will only output 480p thru HDMI??? To verify possible conflict I did the remote hack to get HDCP to display "OK H" and Macro to display "OK M" (was already there). So unless I can get a better understanding of this, I will have to go back to component, even then that only does 1080i on non commercial dvds.
Anyone can help me understand this, especially others who got LGDVB418 from Emily etc as it appears something had been done to modify its capabilities before it was shipped???

connect the player directly and see. hdmi should allow upconversion. right now you could have a dvd player, cable, switcher or display problem.

To verify possible conflict I did the remote hack to get HDCP to display "OK H" and Macro to display "OK M" (was already there).

Check your settings by entering [pause] 2-4-8-6-5. You will probable see HDCP: OFF. These hacks switch when you exit. Do the hack again and you should be "ON".

I don't have HDMI myself, but I think you need HDCP ON to use it.

Good luck.

However, I'm guessing you are unaware of any.

This can be ordered directly from LG Parts @888-393-6484. For some reason, they can't find it under the model number (DVB418), but the remote part number (6711R1N167A) is in their system as a valid part number and is available.

The same remote with a Zenith logo is part number 6711R1P070H, but I did not check to see if it is still valid and available.

Trevor,

So far, I Know this. The two original firmware versions installed on my players (V1.3491 and V1.385201) both support four of the six remote hacks. I did not try the EDID or Region hacks when I retested them this week.

The four hacks also work on the downloaded upgrade from LG's Canadian site for the 531 (V1.437). I can pass you the link and directions if you don't have them handy.

My burned CD with the ISO Image (Turbofroggy's download) gave me a "disk error" message when I tried to load it. Since I did not use Nero, I may have screwed it up. I'm going to try again in a few days.

In "three to five days" I expect to receive a disk with V1.385201 on it. I'll let you know when it arrives.

Hello Bob,

I had no problem downloading and installing the 531 update you mention, and the final 418 update. Problem is that I get a loss of picture depth with the 531 firmware that I couldn't calibrate away (DVE). The 418 update is working very well, but has the drawback of not accepting the keycode hacks. Your expected copy of V1.38201 (that I gather works well and accepts at least the main keycode hacks -- HDCP, MACROVision), sounds like just the thing. If it arrives and it appears to be a good disc, I would love to see if I can arrange to obtain a copy from you.

Thanks much -- Trevor

After about 6 months of loving this player, I turned it on yesterday and loaded a DVD full of avi files as I've done almost every day since I've owned it. The screen flickered but no LG logo screen, just blackness.

I pressed the play button & the first AVI on the disc started to play but no picture, just audio. I tried a bunch of DVD-Rs that have played fine before, even the day before, but no go. Then I put in a retail DVD and the movie started up fine. Picture was good and everything.

What I've figured out is that all of my DVD-rs do not work at all as far as the video goes. All of them play the audio just fine but no video. All of my retail DVDs play as normal. I still can't get a logo screen to come up when I turn on the player though. It will come up, however, when I put in a retail DVD and then stop the movie completely. But as soon as I eject it, the screen goes back to black, no logo.

Any Ideas?

Anybody have any inside scoop on the "refurbished" DVB-418 phenomenon? There are muliple vendors all claiming them to have been factory refurbished, but with no factory warranty.

After having tried two clearly defectives, and occasionally hitting misbehavior with the one I kept, I'm wondering if they're genuinely factory refurbished, or rather simply recycled customer returns.

Dear all, something weird happened with my 418 today. I wanted to use its remote to control my SONY KDFE50A10. To program a remote code, you have to keep the TV power button pressed and insert it (all the remote codes are at the end of the owner's manual).

For the SONY I chose 12. When I inputted this code, the 418 was on and something blinked in its led display.

As a result, the remote changed the aspect ratio and now this is no longer correct when displaying pictures at 1080i/60

The remote works with my tv set, but the problem is that this code did something also to the DVD player changing the aspect ratio in a wrong way when picture is being displayed at 1080i (wide 16:9 by default through HDMI connection). This does not happen at lower resolutions. The display menu won't help, to correct the wrong setting. Not even resetting the device or flashing the firmware again will. Please help, if you can. There must be a new code that will correct the default aspect ratio at 1080i.

Before using this remote code, this player worked great at 1080i for several months with no problems at all. I know for sure that this is not related to my Sony TV set, as I've hooked up other devices @1080i and the aspect ratio at that resolution is correct.
Thanks for your help. Here is the system information of my 418:

Model: LV8070261

Main Ver: E143
Sub Ver: 0007

FYI: I tried both firmware and it appears that the 1.38xxx version did not correct the white crush issue via component, the 531 verison did help minimize it but it appears that there is now a slight green push but I'd take that over loss of detail (and way too bright) in the whites.

Bobcat.

I have just bought this player specifically for the upscaling over component feature and dvd region free functionality. I noticed trevor mention the "final 418 firmware" that still has the hacks embedded.

I was wondering where I can get this firmware. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

David

To my knowledge, the best firmware for the DVB418 upscaling over component is version 1.437 which was published on LG's Canadian site for the almost identical LDA531. I use this firmware on my 418s because my three year old Mitsubishi does not have a digital interface (HDMI or DVI). This version may be downloaded using the link published by GREENO in post #416.

The firmware I obtained and copied for TREVORS was version 1.385201 (the 5 was omitted in error). From what I've read, this is the best for the DVB418 upscaling over HDMI.

I do not have use for the region free feature. However, I tried the published hack code once and it did not work. If you read back through the thread you will find mention of another method of making the player region free.

Anyway I could get this final 418 firmware also?

If you will be using your 418 to upscale over a component interface the link for version 1.437 is published in post #416 by GREENO.

If you will be upscaling over a HDMI/DVI interface, you may already have the best firmware (version 1.385201). Let us know if you are having any picture quality problems.

The Region Code Hack published in January 2006 apparently is for the older 4000 series players. The following procedure for the 6000 series players works for the DVB418 and may also work on the LDA531 (very likely) or LDA511 (likely).

Go to the link:

http://lgregionfree.tripod.com/2005/menu1.htm

1) Select the 6000 series (second from bottom on left) and download the file 6000.zip. Extracting this file produces a 1kb DVD File in the following directory: RMTM0000\SCARLET\kpjc19_1

2) Burn the folder and it’s contents to a disk.

3) Load the disk in your player and hit PLAY.

The following screen will appear:

Region Management Test Mode

Current EEPROM_REGION_CODE 1 (Display will say: CODE 01 or whatever code is current)

Press new region number <0-6> :_ (Display will change to what you enter)

Press PAUSE Key To Exist (Exit)

4) Remove the disk and power OFF.

Repeat step three to check the current code if you want. DO NOT CHECK SYSTEM INFORMATION AS THIS WILL PERFORM A FACTORY RESET AND CHANGE THE CODE BACK TO 1.

Trevor,

I noticed today, after finding some time to re-publish the Region Free Conversion, that the dashes disappeared after changing to Region 0 (mine were @1080i). Did you notice the same? How did v1.385201 work for you?

My Panny PM50 has the same problem i cannot use anything above HDMI 480p or i get white dashes on top of screen.
Also using Component i get a right side 1/2" side shift, the 511 i didnt have this problem!
Also get loud audio screech using hdmi if set to bitstream out!
511 didn't!
But it plays anything without a hitch, 511 had audio skips, 418 doesnt, heck my tv is a ED plasma so there is no difference in upconverting i can see.

After reading this thread, I decided to get a refurb player and try this out. I received my DVB418 from eBay last week, and I did the firmware update, button hacks, and region free disc with success. One benefit I didn't think about is I do not have to change the picture size on my tv now. My TV automatically senses 1080i signals, and switches to natural. Before I would have to switch from Theater Wide 1 to Full for DVD playback. As for picture quality I don't really see a difference.

I have installed the 531 firmware in the dvb418 and turned off the macrovision and the hdcp. The problem is in the component mode it will not upscale 720p or 1080i without a pronounced loss of quality. In the hacked menu under EDID parsons it says 480p on, 720p off and 1080i off. Is there a way to enable the 480p and the 1080I as the macrovision and HDCP is off.

I was able to change the EDID Parsing settings for 720p and 1080i to on only by using a HDMI/DVI interface. I found that those settings being on or off had no effect when upconverting via component and I believe others came to this same conclusion somewhere back in this thread.

If you suffer a loss of picture quality, my guess is that you are somehow switching back to 480i. Please post the make and model of your HDTV and receiver, if you are not connecting directly, and someone may be able to further help you.

I am running a Sharp Z-9000 projector and have been using the DVB318. The 318 upscales with no problem but has began to freeze up periodically as it has gotten older. I Thought I would then try the DVB418. It has accepted all of the remote mods, but when you upscale to 780p or 1080I the picture will lose clarity and the colors will wash out somewhat.

greeno
10-22-06, 01:42 PM
You will need to recalibrate the display to the new 418 player. That might account for the color wash out. lose of clarity sounds like a seperate issue. I have both and 318 and 418 upconverting via component and I've not noticed any loss of resolution with component upconversion.

Have you looked at resolution test patterns comparing the 318 to 418? That should determine if you have a loss of resolution.

Best,
jeff

This works great w/ my 55" Mitshu HDTV using Hdmi-DVI, but on my new Sony 40V2500 HDMI-HDMI it won't work.

When I started it up it played at 480p, then when I set the resolution to 1080i the Tv shuts off the picture and it will only shows picture again when I reboot it and the main sky blue LG screen shows up but the clouds are pink.

Oh well its an old player anyway. I will be purchasing HD-DVD or a PS3 soon enough. Still works fine on my Mitshu though.

Using a HDMI to DVI cable you should be able to play copy protected DVDs without any hacks. I have a Westy LTV 19w6 that I use primarily as a PC monitor, and an unhacked DVB418 plays flawlessly on it.

I suggest you buy the model you like from a seller with a liberal return policy in case it doesn't work as I have no actual experience with the combo units.

tt08,
it depends.
if the scaler in the tv is better than that in the player then generally no.
if the tv has some issue with 480p signals (think tosh *h81 and *h82 set with terrible internal 480p to 540p upconversion) then yes upconversion is good as it bypasses this circuitry.

If your tv handles 480p natively (like some mits do) then upconversion will be minimal.

players like this with dcdi though will show macroblock enhancement. you can still benefit from upconversion but you need to take care when calibrating your set to the player to minimize the effects.

Best,
jeff

I can't get a DVB418 to upconvert over HDMI using a Monoprice 2x1 HDMI switcher and HDMI>DVI cable to a Panasonic PTL-500U 720p LCD projector. I had a Samsung DVD-HD950 and Motorolla DCT6412III connected using the same HDMI switcher and both can output 720p and 1080i. Substitute the DVB418 for the DVD-950 and all I can do is 480p with the DVB418 although the DCT6412II still outputs the desired resolution. I tried toggling HDCP on and off with no change. Could it just be the DVB418 doesn't work well over DVI or with the Monoprice switcher or projector? I didn't try HDMI>DVI direct to the projector since that would be a pain as the HDMI>DVI cable isn't long enough and I don't want to use it that way even if it works. I reset to factory defaults and I am using the original firmware if I recall correctly.

Updating the firmware and setting HDCP to Default H, and it upconverts over HDMI now. With HDCP at OK H, it won't which I guess makes sense as that must be HDCP off. I have to assume that it was a compatibility problem with the Monoprice switcher using the original firmware. Thanks.

ISO images can be a little tricky. I used the copy routine in Windows XP to burn mine. You might try that if you have that OS on your Mac.

Also, your file structure must be exactly as follows for the player to read it:

LG_DVD/FIRMWARE/UPGRADE/LG/*.iso

If none of this works, I can send you the .mih file which will also load MICOM VER. v1.437 which is what you need. Give me your E-mail in a Private Message along with your mailing address and I will also be glad to send a copy of my disk. LG will also send you a disk with this file, if you prefer.

Here is my rewrite of the published hacks:

The player has to be on with no disc in it (or tray open). The codes should be entered on the LG logo screen.

Hit pause once, enter code, box pops up saying OK or Default, read status, then hit pause twice to exit. Switch will toggle to opposite status upon exit. (Exit when OK will switch to Default)

Setting status displays on entry of code 2,4,8,6,5 (Video/HDMI Info Page)

.HDCP: ON/OFF 1,2,3,6,9
OK H is status ON
Default H is status OFF

.EDID: ON/OFF 1,4,7,8,9
(Extended Display Identification Data)
OK E is status ON
Default E is status OFF

.Macrovision: ON/OFF 7,4,1,5,3,6,9
OK M is status ON
Default M is status OFF

Factory reset + SYSTEM INFORMATION page
go to Setup/video/TV Aspect/16:9 and press 1,3,9,7,1,3,9 ENTER
should get blue info screen, all reset on exit. (enter or setup)

The region free conversion originally published was for an older model. My rewrite of that is in post #421 (first post on page 15)

Good luck.

I just got this DVD player so I could do 1080i over component. That worked fine, but to be honest, I can't tell the difference between it and 480p.

Hi all, I am new to posting in the forum (but have been reading for a while now). I did a search but couldn't find the answer I was looking for.

I have an LG 418 right now, and just got my Mitsu 65831. I am using HDMI and upconverting - and the picture is generally great, but not breathtaking. Does anyone know if I would benefit by going to the Oppo 970? Has anyone compared the upconverting before? Thanks in advance!

Try the same post here:

or start a new thread, or try playing "Pearl Harbor" on your 418. On my Mitsubishi VS50111 (Component only) my 418 play is definitely breathtaking. If it is not on yours, you need to do something. What firmware version do you have on your 418?

The 418 (which I have on a 50'' crt rptv) looks good, but occasionally you can see MB. I have the Oppo 970 on a 73'' crt rptv which is replacing the zenith 318. the MB on that set was beginning to annoy me. The 418 is a bit sharper than the 318. I think the 970 is sharper than the 418 and no chance of MB enhancement.

If you want universal capability, the 970 is a no-brainer. If you don't care about hi-res audio, your 418 is "good enough" unless you are seeing MB enhancement.

Best,
jeff

I too just jumped on the LG-418 bandwagon, I'd appreciate it if some could send me the 531 firmware update: craigwillie "at" comcast "dot" net.

I'll be sure to share the wealth in the future whenever I can.

Got it thanks!

My main interest in purchasing this DVD player was to do 1080i over component. I've read through this thread, but it was started in 2004 so I want to make sure I have my info straight.

Does the firmware level matter in order to do 1080i over component? Or is it just the remote hacks to turn off macrovision, etc.? What is the recommended firmware level for what I want to do?

Thanks!

Craig

The E-mail you received yields firmware v1.437. The prior version had lip-synch problems when using component. In addition you need to set H, E, and M to OFF using the codes found using this link:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9299830&&#post9299830

If you want to go region free, look here:

Good luck.

I just called LG looking for the firmware update for the DVB418 audio sync issue and the rep told me that there was an update (upgrade in his terms) but I would have to send it in and have to pay for labor. I'm definiately not going to do that.

Anyway, could I get an email with the firmware sent to "cdaly33" at "gmail" dot "com". Thanks so much in advance!
