get either as they're nearly the same player. I've not seen the 531 for sale. the 418's can be had refurb'd on ebay for about $85 shipped.

If you are asking if the player has been updated, the player can be updated with firmware for the LDA-531 and found now at bargain prices refurbished. It is among the elite bargain players (< $100) in my opinion for displays not adversely affected by the Faroudja FLI23xx macroblocking enhancement problem. My displays aren't ruined by the problem and the player is really good. I have more players than I need so it is currently sitting in my closet boxed up, but I loved it for the period I used it. I am holding on to it since it does't bring much of a price used.

I have a LG LDA 511 and want to upconvert to 720p through the component cables. Greeno has been trying to help me out but I am still having trouble. When I burn firmware he sent me to a dvd it keeps saying disc error.

Can anyone else help me.

The firmware file is currently named LV8070261.MIH Does it need to be named anything specific for the dvd player to recognize it?

You should have just unzipped it and burned it as it is. It needs the directory structure. did you do that?

I'm having a wierd issue with this player, anyone have any ideas? It seems to have conked itself out somehow...

I have a LG DVB-418 hooked up to a Monoprice 5x1 HDMI switch (the 1st one with the green lights), along with a a new Motorola dual tuner HD DVR. They are connected by the switch via the DVI input on my TV. But when I switch from the DVR to the LG player, crazy stuff happens.

First time, the LG player would only output via 480p over HDMI, despite trying to change it. to 720p (its usually setting). So I shut it all down and tried again. This time the LG would give me a strangely colored version of the start up screen over 480p on HDMI. I then tried unplugging the DVR from the switch, and restarting. Now no signal at all from the LG player. Then I hooked up the LG directly to the TV. I get the LG welcome screen over 720p on HDMI, then everything goes blank... it'll proceed to load a DVD and I get no picture but sound. I've hooked it up over component (with the proper hacks to upscale), but I really would like the HDMI output to work again.

Any ideas? I'm so frustrated I'm about to toss it out... but I'm hoping there is a fix.

did the problems start, using HDMI, before or after you updated the firmware to allow for component upconversion? You can disable DHCP with the new firmware. If you've upconverted via component then I guess you did that. Did you turn DHCP back on when trying to upconvert via HDMI?

jeff

The problems started before I ran the firware update or the hacks. I tried first the firmware update, no luck over HDMI. Then I tried the codes to disable macrovision and DHCP, but that didn't seem to work either. What's wierd is that the LG worked fine with the switch before I hooked the Motorola box up to it (in place of an old Samsung HDTV box).

greeno
03-06-07, 06:24 PM
then there's your problem. disconnect the moto box to re-verify all is good. the problem is either the switch or the moto box. the 418 is apparently not the problem.

i'm guessing you only need the switch if you want to run both the moto and 418 on hdmi? Why not now use component for 418 and leave the moto on hdmi, as a work around, since it'll now output 1080i via component?

Best,
jeff

I have the Comcast Motorolla DCT6412III, LG DVB418 and a Monoprice 5x1 HDMI switcher, not connected together now, but could try it at some point soon if you don't get yours working. The DCT6412III goes back to Comcast in a few days so I will need to know.

That's how I have it now... but much prefer the LG's output over HDMI than component. At first I thought it was an issue with the switch, but I think it is the switch and the LG player.

The switch has an autodetect feature (that can't be disabled) that goes to the active hdmi input. The Comcast box always shows an active HDMI signal, even when it is off and not transfering a video signal, so the switch always wanted to be on the Comcast box. And when I would manually switch over to the LG player on HDMI, the issues would start.

Though the wierd thing now is that even when I connect the LG box to my TV via HDMI without the switch, it won't output a video signal. It's like the switch somehow broke its HDMI output or handshake ability...

Bob, thanks for the upgrade image.

I have read everything in this thread, and I have attempted every different way to burn the image and still get an error message from the 418.

I have burned it with and without the folder designation, both as a data CD and as an ISO CD.

Help, what am I doing wrong.

For a retired engineer it has become a mental challange and may drive me to the Bombay Gin bottle.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'm not sure what Bob's image looks like that he sent out. I think he probably sent it out wiht the correct directory structure, so preserve that.

what program are you using to burn it? I have nero and until I updated the software had issues burning correct images. With nero, you need to use the burning rom program. burn at once (disc at once). I think that's all you do, when using that program.

Also I was wondering if this firmware upgrade will get rid of that annoying black bar on the right of the screen when upscaling to 720p or 1080i? I am running this dvb-418 into my xr-10x projector.

At worst I'll copy my disk and mail it to you. Give me your address in a Private Message.

If you are using a PC with Windows XP, just using the copy routine in My Computer to your CD or DVD burner should work with the file structure that was in my E-mail. It worked for me.

If you are using a Mac, I've seen others have problems too. Get a friend or relative with a PC to burn it for you.

PS: I'm a retired engineering school drop out. The third semester got too technical for me. So I can't be any smarter than you.

I see the annoying black side bars using component on 720 and 1080, using hdmi i get a top bar on the same settings, thought it was my underscan happy panny plaz, but it still did it on my HD70 PJ.
So i just leave it at 480p.

Thats what I was afraid of. I'll try upgrading it anyways and let you know if it fixes it on mine. I wonder why it would do that? From the one dvd I tried it with, the upscaling didn't look any diferent than the 480p. From what I've heard though there will be a difference on some dvd's and others there won't. I guess time will tell.

Thanks for the firmware!

The 531 Upgrade (V1.437) also was already installed on the refurbished unit I bought October 5, 2006. The eBay seller was JeffandIvan which is affiliated with TheRefurbKing. It's likely any sold since October by either eBay seller has the same version.

If your component is perfect, you are probably running firmware V1.437 (The famous 531 upgrade). Months ago, I believe some HDMI users were saying V1.385201 worked better. I tried this version on a Westinghouse 19w6 using HDMI to DVI but could not see a difference. If you would like to try it, I can E-mail it to you, but I suspect the problem is the HDCP handshake.

I believe nothing is ever hopeless. Send me your E-mail in a Private Message and I'll send V1.385201. If that fails, I'll send V1.437 to restore your component upconversion. I know of no way to restore V1.3491.

Or, Best Buy is selling the Panasonic DVD-S53 right now for $99.99. I tried this player connected to a Panasonic XR70 Receiver and the handshake easily beat my LG and a Philips. I would expect it to do the same on your plasma. If you prefer a recorder, Circuit City is selling the Panasonic DMR-ES25 this week for $179.99.

Or, check the following threads to see what upconverters other Panasonic plasma owners recommend. The answer may be to simply let the TV do all of the upscaling.

Hey all,

I've just been through and returned Oppo, Helios, Yamaha and Oppo again. I just want a DVD player that can upconvert via component and play all regions.

The last few DVD players had these issues:
• Zoomed component image
• Bad subtitle decoding
• DVI picture size issue

And none were as good as my HD-A1 in terms of upconverting.

Will the LGDVB418 suit my needs?

Thanks.

which oppo did you try and why didn't you like it. I have both the 970 and the 418 upconverting via component. the 970 is sharper and doesn't macro block, so I'd pick it over the 418. The layer change is faster and it load faster *and* it's a universal player. I have a 73'' crt. You might be asking too much comparing to the HD-A1.

I have the HD-A1 and Oppo DV970HD and if Oppo fixes the vertical squeeze problem, I will like the Oppo better. The HD-A1 is really clunky operationally but does do a good job upconverting used with a 100" screen and 720p LCD projector. For a display without the macroblocking enahancement issue, I think the DVB418 is a great value, I have it as well.

I'm totally aware of the vertical squeeze issue with the 970, but I just don't notice it. if you a/b you'll see it and how much it is, but the images look so good, it just doesn't seem to matter.

I agree with Chris, the 418 is a really good value (cheap and good performance). if you hve MB enhancement problems you may need to look elsewhere.

With my projector, the DVI size issue with the 971 was a real pain. Also, when I had the 970, there was a subtitle issue where it would only show some of the translation. Oppo said it had to do with the subtitle frame size and that there was no immediate fix.

The vertical squeeze is not the end of the world, and all of these inexpensive players have some issues. The DV970HD will likely be my favorite if that particular problem gets fixed. The problem annoys me enough that I am using the HD-A1 for DVD-V until it is fixed.

I switched from a 30" Panasonic CRT-HDTV to a 42" Panasonic TH-42PH9UK.

First thing I hooked up was my LG so I could run the break in dvd.
Immediately I noticed that the color of the LG splash screen was all wrong. Instead of blue it was like really light purple.

Frustrated and nervous dealing with a new tv i quickly changed it to component and it looked fine, of course before changing i tried unplugging it and turning off the tv etc.

here is where it gets weirder, first this LG 418 was hooked up via hdmi the whole 16 months i owned it with the previous tv
Second my Comcast HD-DVR box worked immediatly on hdmi.

I hope this is not off topic here, because it very well could be an issue with my pansonic's menu.

Thanks for any advice.

You should try calibrating the dvd player to the new display. The fact that component looks ok while hdmi looks wrong, doesn't really mean anything. you just need to go through the setup/calibration first.

I'm confused on how to make the DVB418 region free.
I have about 6 region 2 PAL discs I'd like to play using NTSC set. Will the player convert PAL to NTSC natively?

What's required to make this region free? People have mentioned a 518 FW, a 5000 file and a 6000 file. I'm a bit confused and don't want to trash this player.

TIA!

Can't answer your question about PAL to NTSC conversion, but here's a link to the Region Free conversion:

Sorry if a solution has been stated but, I have the 418 hooked up via HDMI and I get the dreaded purple screen when I load a DVD. Does anyone have the firmware to fix the issue? If so can you email to imtheman1@ca.rr.com. Thanks in advance!

I just bought a new Panny 50PX60U and can't get HDMI to work from my DVB418. I've had the player for two years hooked to a Dell 42" without any problems. On the Panny I get a pink screen (which I have been able to clear at times by switching resolution) and no sound. Component is perfect. Anyone have experience with this? If I use the 511 firmware will it correct this? Is there a better choice?

Did you ever get a fix for the pink screen and no audio coming from HDMI? I've got the same problem. I running 1.385201.

I have a question about a slight shifting to the left with the 531 firmware. I notice when I first turn on my player it has a red lg logo screen then shifts slightly to the left and the blue lg logo screen comes up. Is there a way to keep the player from shifting to the left, or is this just a difference in the logo screen?

Thanks in advance.

what does it mean if the picture quality looks like it's washed out and there are no audio at all when using HDMI? However, when I tried the component, everything works as it should. I think I have the newest firmware because I don't have any of the off sync audio issue. I want to use the HDMI interface since my TV can support it now. Any advice welcome.

If component works your player has been "hacked." You need to reset the default setting before you use HDMI. If you know how to check the software version this resets everything for you.

Are you talking about this?

Factory reset + SYSTEM INFORMATION page
go to Setup/video/TV Aspect/16:9 and press 1,3,9,7,1,3,9 ENTER
should get blue info screen, all reset on exit. (enter or setup)

Ok, I've tried factory reset....still can't use HDMI.

I would like to correct myself when I said I could upconvert over component...I didn't know what I was talking about because I figured out that I can't. I, then, upgraded to a file I downloaded through a link in this thread, dvb418_firmware.iso(
http://www.turbofroggy.com/images/dvb418_firmware.zip). If I remember correctly, the version was v1.3471, now it's V1.385201. After upgrading, I couldn't get back into factory reset no matter how many times I tried. But the important thing is I still can't use the HDMI interface. Every time I switch input to HDMI, "no signal" or "invalid format" would show up.

I guess the last thing to do is try the 531 upgrade. I'd appreciated if someone provide me a link to download it. email: aeonwings@yahoo.com

The .iso (image) files can be tricky if they're not burned just right. When i get a chance tomorrow, I'll attach the .mih file for version 1.385201 to an E-mail with instructions. I'm told v1.437 (the 531 upgrade) doesn't work well with HDMI. We'll keep up the dialogue until you get it working or it's time to call LG.

Merry Christmas,
Bob

But I thought I succeeded? version 1.385201 came up after the upgrade. If I didn't burn the iso right then the player wouldn't play it right? Well, if you happen to have the 531 upgrade, can I get that too? And a very merrry christmas to u 2.

I just sent the .mih file for v1.385201. Try that first. I'll send the .mih file for v1.437 if that doesn't work.

Gongratulations! I'll be glad to send you anything I have and i do have firmware versions 1.385201 and 1.437. My wife says I save everything....except money!

So there is no rush.

The firmware versions correct some deficiencies when playing via HDMI or enhance play via Component when coupled with certain hacks. So tell me which connection you will be using and what firmware version is installed on your player?

I still new at this surround sound system stuff. How do I check for the version of firmware version is installed on your player? And what do you mean which connection you will be using? I thought you had to burn a iso of the firmware and the system would do the update automactically. I tired to burn dvb418_firmware but i got an error.

ISO files can be tricky to burn. I have the easier .MIH files.

What kind of cable will you be using to connect your player to your receiver or TV?

Here is how to tell what software version you have:

Factory reset + SYSTEM INFORMATION page
Go to Setup/video/TV Aspect/16:9 and press 1,3,9,7,1,3,9 ENTER
Should get blue info screen, all reset on exit. (Press ENTER or SETUP to exit)
You may need to repeat more than once.

On the SYSTEM INFORMATION PAGE read:

MICOM VER.: V1.3491/V1.385201/V1.437/?

I dont need the firmware. Im sorry I havent responed in the last couple of days. My dvt418 is working fine. Been playing with it. When I got it last friday it did not work all day. Until about 11:00 pm. I put in a cd and it played fine played a couple of songs then tired to play my favorite it started to skip again. So I turned it off cut it back on it played fine again. Then I tired to play dvds "Superman returns " and "tenaious D" were the ones that hardly played. I tried superman first and it worked much to my surprise. As I was watching the volume was on 11. When the volume went below 11 it started to skip back on 11 it was fine. So I was like I can deal with that. But eventually it went back to skipping on everything again. I got really fustrated cause its such a nice surround sound system so on saturday; I played all the dvds that didnt work all day long. They sat in the dvd player skipping for most of the day. Then from out of nowhere(im guessing the lens fixed itself or something) supermans menus were playing fine. I got excited and put in tenaious D it was skipping. So I let it sit there but it was only about 10 or fifteen mintues when it started to play fine. Everything that didnt work worked. And the rest is history, everything works perfectly:D. Its a great surround system system when it works. Thank you even for considering to help me though. Thanks:)

OK. You probably had dust or dirt on the lens. You can buy a CD or DVD cleaner disk at most Electronics stores and most food Supermarkets for $10 to $15 (or less). It's a simple disk with a tiny brush to sweep away the dust or dirt. The DVB418 has a shallow tray so don't buy anything fancy. One cleaner I have is a thicker disk that generates a gust of air but it doesn't work on the 418.

Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask again!

Bobkat6: Hope you can help... I have the LGDVT418, with the MICOM vers: V1.3852_03. Tried playing "Fools Gold" and the voices would not come through (very muffled and low). I could not change it and think that the firmware needs updating. What do you think?

I also was thinking that is it possible if I played alot of copied movies vs. the originals that I could have damaged the unit? I haven't played a lot of movies and esp. the new ones don't play that well.

Thanks for the suggestions and help!

Your problem isn't firmware-probally the audio connection to your reciever/tv-if tv don't set the player to surround sound-on some dvds it will cause it to be muffled and distorted.
