Anyone know if Home Theater Builder Magazine is still being published? Their website is out of date and the back issue form link was down when I tried today.

Call them. I ordered all the back issues and received them middle of last week (took about 1/2 a week). Pretty good info. Actually quite good. Some familar names from AVS contribute to it.

It's a great magazine. I had moved and somehow my issues hadn't showed up. I called and they sent them all out to me right away.

A++ recommendation.

I've heard that you can forget waiting for Home Theater Builder Magazine, Issue #11. The parent publishing company is out of business.

Another one bites the dust.....and takes my money with it!

Where'd you find that out?
The last I read (yesterday) was that the mag had just been posted out.
If it has finally been published then there's now only another 25!! issues of my sub left to go.

I emailed them about 2 weeks ago to find out the status of issue 11, they replied back the next day saying the issue was just finished, and was sent to the printers. I haven't seen or heard anything since. I will believe it when its in my box :(

CraigAll is not lost...

Just wanted to pop in and let people know that I received the latest issue of HTB today.

The cover is labeled as "Fall 2005", so it may be they are going to a quarterly vs. monthly publication, though nothing inside the mag would give this indication. I did note that on the mailing label the subscription expiration date is 4/1/2009. I pulled out my older copies of HTB and sure enough my original expiration date was 10/31/2005, exactly three years after I purchased a 36 month subscription. Then in September 2003 it changed to 8/27/2006 which would coincide with them going to bi-monthly publication. the fact that it is now pushed out to 2009 is a pretty good indication of quarterly publication.

That being said, I still think this is a great magazine (when it's available!) and I'm glad to see the publishers trying to fulfill their subscription obligations, albeit over an extended period of time. Hopefully whatever troubles have plagued them can be resolved as it appears they have good content available. they just need to get it into print.

Be sure to check it out if you get the chance as it features fellow AVS member Darren Mortensen's (aka "ImListening") Cyberdyne Cinema (http://gallery.avsforum.com/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=10422). Kudos and congrats! http://members.shaw.ca/wenpigsfly/smileys/thumb.gif

Got mine in the mail today as well. Long time in coming and you know what? I didn't find the issue very inspiring. Other than the great article about Darren's Cyberdyne Theater (now THAT is a theater! :) ), none of the articles really grabbed me. I noticed that they didn't have any letters to the editor. Maybe they were all too negative.

My subscription label says 1/2006. I don't know if that is correct or not. I thought I signed up for a 12 month subscription, but it's been so long and I bought all of the back issues, that I have lost track of how long of a subscription I did buy. :(

Still, I do like the magazine and will probably re-subscribe. I don't think I will get a reminder card in the mail to do so, and I will have to contact them.

I am not a subscriber but I have picked up all the copies either through Chapters or the back order web page. I'm curiuos did the pilot project finish? What are the do it yourself topics/projects?

JSwarce

Uxbridge:

On page 8, there is listed a bunch of features coming in future issues. They do mention this: "And Pilot Project will return! You'll see Chris Dotur's completed home theater and the final steps it took to get there." I hope that these features are really published and not just a "wish list". This magazine has shown us a lot of great information.

The do-it-yourself projects are "Tuning your Home Theater", "Colors and Materials", "Multimedia Platform", and "Duct Treatment for Home Theaters". The main focus of the issue is "Having Fun with your Home Theater". Think gaming.

I emailed HTB yesterday about my 12 month subscription that I got in August of 2003 and how long I had left on it (the label says 2/2006 for an expiration date, and the current issue is only my seventh issue received). Got back a reply today from Andy Crosby, the COO of the magazine....

Hi John:

We are going through the process of updating the expiration dates. You will receive all 12 issues in your subscription.

Thank you
Sincerely,

On page 06 of the current issue at the bottom of the Magazines information column it clearly states that: Basic subscription rates: 5 issues U.S. $10.95, Canada $18.95 . As does the Subscription Insert between pages 10 & 11.

So we can expect 5 issues per year, yes, I wish it were monthly... but I have seen each issue grow larger in content, so hopefully it may expand to a monthly issue.

There is a nice article entitled "Tuning Your Home Theater" by Arthur Noxon of Acoustic Sciences Corp. He addresses the acoustic quality of a room and what effects a room will have on audio reproduction.

Also another very interesting topic that we see often revived here at AVS entitled "Duct Treatment for Home Theaters", this brief article discusses HVAC and the possibility of unwanted audio transmission thru your homes air ducts.

I also noted some new, up-scale manufacturers and dealers advertising the pages of HTB; this income with hopefully insure continued growth for a magazine of great potential.

So how can we tell how many issues left on our subscription.

So how can we tell how many issues left on our subscription. Not sure you can tell how many issues you have left unless you know how many years you subscribed for and how many issues you've already received. (if I'm not mistaken there have been (11) eleven issues including the most recent "Fall 2005" issue)

You can, however, determine when your subscription is due to end. See my post (#15) above. Your scheduled expiration date should be listed on the mailing label.

I'd say it is officially dead.

Haven't seen or heard anything in ages...

I never subscribed, just picked them up at the bookstores when I could fine them.

I have:

1.1 Dec2002
1.2 Feb2003
1.3 Mar2003
1.4 Apr2003
1.5 Jul2003
1.6 Sep2003
1.7 Nov2003
2.1 Feb2004
2.3 Nov2004

So, I guess I'm missing 2.2 and the last issue Fall 2005, if anyone wants to get rid of these two, please PM, as I'd like to have them.

It's a shame what happened with this magazine, as it had potential. Home theaters are beginning to really catch on in the US and elsewhere.

PS: Sorry to bring this thread from the dead, but I just ran across an issue in my house and it got me thinking about it.....

I have a brother who is a lawyer who said if we can get enough members that he would file a class action suit against Lee Pappas, Andy Crosby and Flying Cloud Press. We wouldn't get much more than our money back but imagine the satisfaction of nailing these crooks.

I think if they don't speak publicly about this in the next two weeks, that's exactly what we should do.

I think these guys are pretty good guys for the most part, but I don't like to be left hanging and I'm getting real tired of it.

My vote is they have 2 weeks to either give us a reasonable ship date, or tell us the magazine is dead and refund the balance they owe us. Or, we act against them and attempt to get all our money back.

McCall, No one said they are rich.

Dave, You're wrong about the class action. The lawyers decide if there is money to be made. They make it absolutely miserable for the defendants, the plaintiffs usually get practically nothing. Except some satisfaction.

All I want is for someone to say I'm sorry, we failed, we tried, and there is no more magazine, or we're shipping on this date.
Other wise, let the feeding begin and take out who ever is left.

Having been a member of far too many class actions, you need to keep your expectations REALLY low. After legal and administrative fees your best hope is a coupon for a discount on their next venture.

Your best hope is to find out what other business the original publisher is active in and ask for an equivalent value of service. Maybe you can get 2 free months of The National Beekeeping Journal.

Peter/Clay - I'm with you guys.... and I think it has more to do with ethics than anything else. It was a great magazine (thanks to the contributers) but frankly it looks like its failure has come down to poor management.

Perhaps it could be handled by a direct letter to Flying Cloud Press, Inc. and after getting either no response or the usual run-around we follow up with a complaint to the Massachusetts Attorney General...

Or perhaps, as Clay has suggested, an apology from Pappas et al.
