US Open and Dolphins

The plan for Saturday as of now is: (and keep in mind that it could change before air time)
WFOR/WFOR-DT will air the US Open at Noon and switch to the Dolphins game at 1 PM, the Dolphins game will be in HD on WFOR-DT.

WBFS/WBFS-DT will air the US Open from Noon to 5 PM and from 8 to 10 PM. HD on WBFS-DT.

WTVX analog will air the US Open.
WTVX-DT is off the air to conserve fuel. If FP&L power returns to the transmitter site WTVX-DT will be back on and the US Open would be in HD.

If you're looking for an indoor antenna, make sure it receives both UHF AND VHF. There is at least one on the market right now that is UHF only and you will not get WSVN Channel 7 which is a VHF digital channel on channel 8. You have to be able to point it directly to the stations' transmitter or you will not receive any signal from them. Prices go for about $20.00 or more.

I live in a concrete appartment building and I face north. I cannot get the Miami channels in HD with the antenna. I have to point it toward West Palm Beach and watch those channels when I'm not watching Cable.

You probably already know this, but if you're getting your cable TV service from Comcast, you can get all of the HD locals (as well as Discovery HD Theater, ESPNHD, INHD1 & INHD2, STARZ, CINEMAX, SHOWTIME, & HBO) through cable. The WB is to be added in 2005.

I was also having alot of chop in 7-1. It was really noticable during the game with a stop or pixelation and audio drop. Occured frequently toward the end of plays or when they switched to graphics etc. I figured I was having reception problems although my signal bars never waivered. With all the trouble they had at teh start I figure I'll have to wait a couple of weeks to see if things smooth out

I know this will sound like a rant but the US Open coverage on WFOR was so disappointing this year. Almost no coverage Labor Day weekend due to hurricane (over-) coverage, constant hurricane updates when it was being broadcast, switch to news coverage after 5pm on the Friday (missing other women's semi-final) and then Dolphins game instead of tennis on Saturday.

Next time WFOR have those who care about a hurricane (or lack thereof) tune to the analog channel!!! What a waste of good HD coverage...

I am using a CM 8 bow tie (3028 ?) from my balcony. We are about 160 feet up, but my panny set top box does not have a signal meter on it for OTA. I have not had this type of OTA problem before. I get all the WPB channels as well as all the Miami channels. I tuned in last night to 7-1 and did not get the choppiness, although it was not 720p. I will try to adjust my antenna, maybe I am getting some multi-path. I really don't know at this point.

Couple of questions:

Which looks better Miami CBS vs. Miami Fox HD?
WPB CBS vs. Miami CBS (I'm curious if those that can get a good lock on both can see a difference since WPB CBS runs the weather subchannel)?
WPB FOX vs. Miami FOX?

I'm not looking to create a bash session, but I am curious about any visual differences. Regardless of the feedback, isn't it great to have so much free NFL HD?

I think the Skins/Giants game on 7-1 looks better than the Colts/Titans game on 4-1. Last week, I thought the opposite (CBS had better PQ than Fox).

As for 7-1 vs. 29-1, I see very little difference between the two. I am comparing the Giants game.

I don't get the WPB CBS station so I can't do a comparison.

Stonscrd and Gary,

The stuttering/choppiness I was experiencing on Fox and occasionally ESPN (during non HD commercials) was fixed by changing from a RGBHV video input to a composite video input. The RGBHV input just could not handle the 720p (even though my tv is designated to handle both 1080i and 720p). I have a NEC 61MP1 Plasmasync and a Panasonic TU-HDS20 set top box. (Old School, I know). Hope this helps anyone with these issues.

edit: componant video input was used, not composite.

I read somewhere (AVS Programming?) that, while ESPN must cede broadcast rights to an OTA station in each team's home market, they need not include HD rights. Apparently, ESPN has chosen to not do so.

Hi, I'm getting started on setting up an antenna and I've got a few questions. I've got a situation where my HOA may potentially (guarenteed) give me headaches about setting up a roof mount antenna. I know that legally they can't stop me. (OTARD) But I don't know if that's a battle I want to get into if I don't have to. I've got a Zenith C32V37 with a built in reciever and I'm about 23-25 miles away from the signal towers. (West Kendall, 33193) Would there be a decent indoor antenna that would be good for my area? Zenith Silver Sensor, Terk HDTVi, Radio Shack 15-1880, even a Winegard Square Shooter 2000?

First go here to make sure another NBC station can't claim you as being
in their viewing area(besides WTVJ(6). If another station with a grade
a or b signal is on the list, you may need a waiver. Also tell them you
are in a O&O market area(Network owned&operated) If the other station
listed is a W.P.B. station, you could argue that W.P.B. is not in your
market area. Be nice, don't yell, you may get the service immediatly.

At the time, the CBS Ch 6 transmitter was in South Dade, resulting in poor reception in north Dade and Broward. They had to use relay UHF sub-channels to reach the northern areas, which in turn affected their ratings negatively. The WTVJ (then Ch 4) transmitter was with the rest in Hallandale.

At the same time, NBC had lost its Philadelphia affiliate. Laurence Tisch, then the Owner/CEO of CBS arranged a trade that gave NBC a Philadelphia affiliate. In return, the two Miami channels exchanged transmitters, which required an exchange in channel numbers.

The WTVJ (Ch 6) analog transmitter is still in south Dade because moving it to Hallandale would cause interference with another Ch 6 somewhere upstate. They spent a couple of years obtaining FCC approval to transmit their DT channel from Hallandale.

The Dolphin- Steelers game is currently scheduled for 8:30 PM Sunday. It will be shown on channel 33. DirecTV Sunday Ticket channel 713 also shows it for 8:30 broadcast, but that might be blacked out locally. It was never designated for HD.

WSVN advises that they will revert to FOX network programming at noon. That means that they will carry Eagles-Lions at 1 PM and Packers-Colts at 4. (The second game was added when the Dolphin game was changed.) Both games are designated for HD.

WFOR will broadcast Browns-Giants at 1 PM.

never, I have the unfortunate luxury to watch the game in the true high def, in real like and watch more utter failure. I do have to say last week the rain made the game interesting enough to stay and watch them lose. It was very refreshing and since I sit right in front of the cheerleaders, them dancing in the rain not wearing ponchos was great.

Ken,
I no longer use equipment which relies on the TV station's PSIP data for correct time info, otherwise I would've notified the engineers. However, if one of you would post here each time you notice a discrepancy, I'll try to get word to the appropriate individuals. Or, you can simply contact the switchboard at the offending station during normal business hours and ask to speak to the person in charge of the digital broadcast.

Dr Z, longtime Sports Illustrated NFL expert, rates the ofensive line as the worst in the league and the team as #32. (There is no #33.)

But there is hope. General Manager Rick Spielman is quoted in today's Miami Herald as saying that the QBs have played well enough this season ; and if he had it to do again he would sign Feeley. Really.

Sounds like a bad decision to me - they have to share the debate viewers with the other networks, but they could have the baseball viewers all to themselves. Do they show the Fox ads on UPN? Is the revenue the same? (I am watching the game on the West Palm Beach affiliate in Fox WS).

Perhaps this is a bit off of the current subject, but I would like to know if people have noticed the same thing I have. Most of the CBS programming has good or at least acceptable color with two exceptions. NCIS usually has the color set WAY too high with some faces blooming bright orange. On the other hand CSI NY barely has any color. At times it is almost black and white with a constant blue tinge. I suppose this might be an attempt to be a little 'artsy'. At any rate, I enjoy both shows and wish they would correct their color in the near future.

While I am ranting, I would also like to know if others experience the same problems I do. I have never been able to get channel 16 to map it's self to 25-1 and PBS channel 2 also does not map it's self from 18 to 2. Is this a problem with my receiver? I have the DISH 811 which works beautifully otherwise. WPBF does not surprise me with their constant problems. When I lived in Delray, they were absolutely the most problematic station on the cable.

Which market are you in? Miami/Ft. laud or WPB?
In order to be eligible, you must have any Total choice pkg with locals
or the H/D pkg. The way it worked for me, they(D*) withheld CBS (80)
due to being in WPB carry area as well as the Miami/Ft. laud mkt area.
D* sent a waiver request on my behalf to WFOR, the CBS station in Miami,
who of course denied the request because.......drum-roll here, I did not
need one as I already am in the mkg. area!!! duh......It took a month or
more, but I finally got it. You may want to contact the station eng. in WPB
and get him to admit Broward Co. is not in their mktg. area. Get it in writing
and send to D*!

Good Luck!

Do I need a waiver or what? Currently I only get NBC off the Sat. I actually get NBC and Fox OTA fine. CBS and ABC I don't get, so if I could get CBS off of Directv I'd be a happy camper.

Could someone confirm there is a blanket waiver from WPEC or that I should be eligible for CBS HD off of sat?

PS: I also sent an email to WPEC general manager and asked for a waiver, heard nothing back.

I'm confused by D*'s policy as well. All I can tell you is that yes, I was made
to get a waiver(D* submitted for me). I think the "blanket" waiver you

Can someone please explain to me why, in the middle of a postgame interview after ALCS Game 6, did WSVN suddenly go to SD and them cut away from postgame for the late news? Do they really think anyone was waiting until midnight just to watch Belkys talk about a plane crash in MO as the lead story (aren't we voting in a few weeks)? WSVN continues to disgust me with their programming choices and I am watching WFLX more and more. Thankfully I was Tivo'ing both channels in case of some technical difficulties. A few weeks ago, WSVN moved the baseball game for the debates!? The debate was on 10 other channels - they could have had 100% of the sports viewers or approx. 10% of the debate viewers - I'd think that the baseball audience would be larger. I don't think I will be watching WSVN anymore.

PS - I emailed this rant to WSVN as well.

wjbjr
10-20-04, 01:09 AM
WSVN has a well earned reputation as the leader of the "if it bleeds it leads" school of news broadcasting. Unfortunately, most of the other Miami stations have followed suit.

My guess is that they switched to the "news" in order to make the advertisers happy. Or maybe Belkys had a date.<g>

KDCane
10-22-04, 09:31 AM
Just a little follow up...

I called Directv and told them I wanted CBS HD feed and low and behold they added it. No problem, no waiver, etc.

Now if I could only figure out how to get Channel 10 OTA I'll be all set. For some reason with my antenna pointed just South of West I get Channel 29 for Fox and don't get Channel 7 at all.

wjbjr
10-22-04, 10:36 AM
Channels 7-1 and 10-1 are both VHF -- Ch 8 and 9 respectively. Is your antenna UHF/VHF or just UHF?

Also, I believe that you might need to aim more to the south to receive them. The towers are just off of I-95 and just north of the Miami-Dade/Broward line, as are those of the other MIami stations. A map should give you an idea of the direction.

Happy to hear that my explanation of CBS proved to be correct -- as I knew it would. The reason that DirecTV turned it on for you is -- as advertised -- that they have a blanket waiver from WPEC.

This is standard practice for WPLG. As their programming director once explained to me, they reserve the right to pre-empt network scheduled programming to air programs paid for by local advertisers, despite what the viewing public might want to see.

I agree that the lousy practice of WPLG constantly changing programming is very aggravating, but your only alternative is to get WPBF from WPB and their signal is very low in this area. When I lived in Delray, WPBF was the ABSOLUTELY WORST channel on the cable, so I have very little confidence of getting a dependable signal from them.

Yes, all of the towers are in the same general location. If you receive two UHF stations you should be able to receive all of them.

I am no expert, but I suspect that your antenna is the problem. What signal readings are you getting on the ones you receive and the ones that you don't receive?

I have read many negative comments regarding Terk antennae. And placement in the attic requires a better antenna than would an outdoor installation.

Perhaps someone in your area will suggest a better choice.

But I could not get PBS, NBC or UPN at all. All the signals are coming from the same direction, right? Why would I get some UHF channels and not others?

Jason

Jason,

You would probably do better with an indoor antenna coupled with a preamp (I'm using a Silver Sensor with a Channel Master 7777 preamp). I get all of the UHF stations broadcasting from the towers, though UPN and WPBT require particular care when aiming the antenna. I also get WPLG and WSVN with the Silver Sensor even though it's supposed to be UHF only. But any good VHF/UHF indoor antenna should do the trick for you since you're so much closer to the antenna farm (I'm in downtown Ft. Lauderdale). You could also check Comcast's HD offerings in your area....last time I checked, they had WPBT, WSVN, WPLG, and WFOR, with WBZL soon to come online. They also have Discovery HD Theater, ESPN-HD, HBO-HD, Showtime-HD, Cinemax-HD, and Starz-HD.

I live in Pembroke Pines, have the HDTivo (love it), and subscribe to D* Complete Choice with locals. Using an attic antenna, I get all the Miami locals in HD very well. But, I wanted the NY and LA feeds (80 - 83) as well.

About 2 months ago, I called D* and asked for 80 - 83 and said I was willing to pay for them. They said that they could only give me 80 (CBS-E) and would have to request waivers from the locals for the rest. About 3 weeks later, I got a post card in the mail indicating that every one of the locals rejected my waiver requests. I was pissed . I called D* to see if they could at least give me 82 (NBC-E) to go along with 80. The Rep checked out my account, saw that the waivers had been denied, and not only said "NO" to 82, but also turned off channel 80! Now, I was really pissed!

I called back a couple of days later, and another Rep checked and told me the same thing. No luck.

so... I called back again... the same day, at around midnight. This time I got a more "accomodating" Rep (a nice sounding honey in Utah -- we struck up a convo re: skiing ;)). She apparently didn't check the details to see that my waiver requests had been rejected, and she ended up giving me 80, 81, 82, 83 & 380 - 383! I'm paying like an extra $2.50/mo. for all of them - total. YES.

I really like having the west coast feeds a lot. I can catch a show later that I've missed earlier. My wife and I now catch the national news at 9:30pm... which works great since we're usually too busy with the kids, etc. at 6:30 to sit down and watch.

Anyway, my advice is: If you want the NY and LA locals and you get turned down by a D* Rep, just hang up and call back and ask the next Rep. And, if that person says no, hang up again... and try someone else. They are so big, and have so many operators, that sooner or later, with persistence, you should get what you want.

My 2cents worth.

What you are paying for is DNS service, which you do not qualify for as
you can receive these networks just fine via OTA. You should have the
network feeds (East only) for CBS & NBC H/D channels, as you are in
O&O market areas. Be aware that if you cancel your DNS service, you will lose the H/D feeds as well. We won't tell on ya!!!!

You may have to do a rescan. Last night I tested an MIT-MDR200, a Samsung SIR-T165, and an LG-LST-3410A and they all picked up both 6-1 and 6-2 without a rescan. I'll check the Comcast HD signal for WTVJ when I get home.

I eventually would like to go back to cable but I am sitting on the fence waiting for them to get more networks and a working DVR box.

Is their reception and uptime good?
Do they provide DVI connection or just component?

Ray(stonecrd) - The HD package from Advanced is very good but overpriced. They offer ESPNHD, DiscoveryHD, HDNET, HDNET Movies, NBCHD, HBOHD, and ShowtimeHD. To get the HD channels, you need digital cable which is $9.95 (You get no digital channels for this price, only 40+ music channels). Then the HD pack is $9.95 for the first 5 channels listed above plus you need to pay $4.95 for the HD STB. That's $25 for 5 extra channels from Advanced - IMO, overpriced.

The PQ for the HD channels is outstanding. HDNET and Discovery HD have some of the best PQ that I have ever seen.

Advanced uses the Motorola 5100 STB for its HD package. The box has component and a DVI output. I use component since my TV does not have DVI.

Also, you can not install the HD box by yourself. You need a highly trained tech (I am being sarcastic), to install the HD box. All my installer did was connect the component cables to TV and the box and call the cable company with a code for the box. It took about 5 minutes to complete. My installer did not know that you can use an optical cable to connect the box to the receiver to get DD5.1 audio. The installation of the box was free.

Hopefully soon, Advanced will have HD DVR's as well as Cablecards to rent.

I am waiting to see what happens with the city of Weston and Advanced regarding the fight over mandatory cable for Weston residents. I hope the city wins so I can join Directv and get a HD Tivo or go to Voom when they offer a HD DVR.

Mike,

Thanks for the info. This is about $9.95 higher than what I was paying from Comcast and I was getting a lot more HD channels, so that is disappointing. Comcast was moving to the mot 6200 which was a single tuner dvr for an addition $5/mo. I am happy with the OTA reception but commercials are killing me and spending $1k for a HD Tivo is too much money. I guess I'll just hang in there until the value of the Advanced offering reaches my price point or cheaper HD recording options come along.

I've been advised that this is a network national project, so it's not likely to go away any time soon. However, the engineer has been made aware of the complaints regarding picture artifacts coming from some viewers with large displays, so perhaps they may be able to tweak the settings on their equipment to maximize picture quality on the HD channel. FWIW, I did another A/B comparison during "LAW & ORDER" last night, and both the HD feed from Comcast and the OTA signal looked about the same as they did before multicasting began. I could not see any picture artifacts, but then again my RP CRT display only measures 42" diagonally.

I am glad I am not the only one seeing the blocking. I also agree it is not as bad as WPBT but, I do not consider WPBT to be a watchable signal due to the extreme macro blocking. I hope the engineers at WTVJ tweak the bandwidth allocation. May I recommed dedicating 19Mbs to primary channel and 200Kbs to the sub channel. It really doesn't matter if the sub channel has poor quality.

Well, I got the HD-DVR installed! It is a SA8300 HD. It also looks like Atlantic Broadband is adding ESPN-HD. It is listed in the guide, but no picture, except for a few seconds. They also fixed the issue where there was no audio on the digital out on the channels lower than 100. Ah, as I type ESPN-HD just came back on! One thing is that it seems that Atlantic Broadbad is only sending out a 1080i signal, I hope this changes as I have a set that can do both 720p and 1080i native. I'll call them later next week to see if this is an issue they know about and are willing to correct.

I had not been receiving 6-1 for about 10 ten days now, so I emailed nbc6 about it. I spoke to one of their engineers there tonight, and 6-1 is back for me as of about 2pm.

It seems there is an incompatibility with new equipment they had installed recently with some receivers including the DISH 811 unit. I have the new Samsung 26" with the HDTV tuner built in. I had been receiving 6-1 for several weeks and all of a sudden it was gone for me.

He also admitted that the new equipment had degraded the signal. The manufacturer is going to correct it. Soon 6-2 will be back on the air carrying a new weather channel type of station which I believe is called Weather Plus.

I just got my HDTV service from Advanced Cable the other day. One of the posters earlier mentioned that HDTV service requires "professional" installation. This is no longer true as I was able to simply bring my existing digital box and swap it out for an HDTV box.
The box that I got is DCT6200. I tried using both component cable and DVI cable, and for some reason found that the component cables give much better picture. Is anybody else here using DCT6200 with DVI? If so, do you find the picture better than component?

With a Toshiba DLP, using a DVI-to-HDMI cable, the difference in picture quality is amazing...at both 720p and 1080i the images are much sharper and 3-dimensional in appearance. With component cables, images aren't as sharp sharp on both my DLP and my CRT RPTVs.

I too have lost reception of WSVN channel 7 in the last few days. I have tried rescanning and the receivers will no longer memorize it. If I manually tune it the green digital signal light goes on and the signal strength meter shows lots of signal but I get the message no signal available. This is happening on both my Samsung SIR-T150 and Samsung SIR-T165. Reception of all other channels is perfect. I suspect they have screwed up the PSIP information and therefore some of us can no longer receive them. That would explain why some of us are receiving them and some are not.
