djufo,
In general the cable companies cannot scramble the HD transmissions from the major networks. So if your TV has a built in ATSC QAM tuner you should be able to pull those stations directly. Note: many TVs come with built in ATSC tuner that does not support QAM and can only be used with an antenna for OTA signals. I know the Sony GWIV works since my son has one and pulls the HD for the majors in without additional boxes or purchasing the cable HD package (we have advanced cable). If you want additional HD content like HDNet, ESPNHD, DiscoveryHD etc these are encrypted and you would need a cable set top box or cable card and pay for the HD service from the cable company
Thank you very much for your answer. I think I'll get the service from the company. Is just around 12 bucks total a month and they give me the DVD-R box for free.
stonecrd 12-16-05, 09:33 AM Djufo,
Just make sure you check the fine print. For Advanced you need to sign up for:
1. Digital Package - $9.95 ( I don't use any of the additional channels)
2. HD Package - $9.95 (I do like some the premium HD so I guess this is worth it)
3. DVR STB - $4.95
4. DVR Service - $9.95 (Not sure why I have to pay seperate for the box rental & service)
So the total for me is an additonal $34.80/mo. The only reason I stay with this is because in Weston I have to pay Advanced for their basic cable regardless of whether I use it, it is mandatory. If not I would probably go to Dish.
Well, thanks a lot stonecrd for your advices. I already have Adelphia. And like you, don't like that much what I pay but the service is good and there is not many competitors to choose. I;m paying for basic cable, digital cable and gold pack. I asked them the details of every charge. Well, the basic is basically the channels from 1-99, the digital are the channels from 100-999 and the gold pack is the HBO's and the Cinemax's. My bill right now with the new adjustments is around $100.00
With respect to the HD service, the rep told me 2 days ago, for the service would be around $7.50 and for the box around $5. Right now they are giving the DVR box and service for free, included in the HD package. In fact I started asking him how much was the HD serice without the DVR and he told me "the same price, right now we are giving the DVR service for free with the HD package". If I decide to go with them, I'll read the fine print for sure anyways.
later,
djufo.
Hi guys, I also posted this in the West Palm Beach local thread, but thought posting it in the Miami local thread also would yeild more responses. If any mods consider this spamming, please feel free to delete the post. Here is my story. :(
************************************************************ ****
I have a DirecTV HD-TiVO, and the off-air antenna that D* gave me for OTA locals. I used to get all the major stations before the hurrican Wilma:
red - vhf WPLG-DT 10.1 ABC MIAMI, FL
red - uhf WTVJ-DT 6.1 NBC MIAMI, FL
red - vhf WSVN-DT 7.1 FOX MIAMI, FL
red - uhf WFOR-DT 4.1 CBS MIAMI FL
In the hurricane, my dish and the OTA antenna got out of alignment, so I had the D* technician come to realigh them about a month ago. The realignment work took place when I was out of town, and my roommate didn't care to check the reception after overseeing the realignmnet.
Ever since the realignment, I am having major major problems with the WSVN-DT Fox channel in channel 7-1. I started seeing major lockups on the HD picture with horrible pixelation, and the picture is never continuous for more than 1-2 seconds. In effect, tht channel is totally fugged up reception. I've also noted that the Fox logo in the bottom right corner started being cut-off at the "O" - sort of like a bad overscan problem.
I never had these issues prior to the hurricane and the subsequent realignment of the antenna. I initially thought the HDMI card on the HR10-250 was starting to croak - so, I changed to component output, but still the problems persisted. On a hunch, I checked the signal strength of the station, and 'lo and behold' - the signal strength is in the low 60s, and always fluctuating between the 60s into the 80s. The signal strength is never constant - which is why I think my picture on the channel is so pathetic.
My question is for guys in the Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Boca Raton, Coconut Creek areas. Has the station just gone kaput after the hurricane, or is my antenna screwed up?? Please reply.
JeffBowser 12-19-05, 01:40 PM I am in Boca - 7-1 is coming in for me OK. Right after the storm it was iffy for awhile, but they seem steady now.
Raaj --
My WSVN-DT signal has declined from about 90 t0 the still watchable 70s. All UHF stations have remained steady in the 90s. WPLG-DT, which had been the lowest, remains in the mid 80s.
Why don't you phone the engineering department and inquire. Perhaps they have decreased the signal. Let us know what they say.
anyone heard yet when ft lauderdale/miami market dtv upgrading to mpeg4?
is there a separate thread for it somewhere if so provide a link. maybe it's too early :)
greg
I believe that we are in the second round, but know not when. Specific estimated (is that oxymoronic?) dates can be found somewhere in the HD Programming Forum. Try a search there.
gregftlaud 12-20-05, 10:32 AM i'm only getting a 68 signal for wsvn since wilma all others in the lower to upper 80's. before the storm wsvn was also in the 80's and now i get frequent pixelation. funny thing is...i get the west palm fox better than wsvn which is only 10 miles from me. some nites the pixelation is worse than other even though the signal holds steady. when it gets irritating i just switch to the wpb fox.

pss3054b 12-25-05, 06:14 PM I have a quick question... I just order a HDTV tuner with a built-in (64/256-QAM) tuner, so I can get digital cable without a box, but it has to be a clear signal.. does anyone know if Comcast in Kendall/Pinecrest scramble/encrypted their local signal? I know I won't get HBOHD and ESPNHD but ABC, FOX etc are they free/clear through Comcast?

You should be able to tune TNT-HD, ABC, FOX, NBC, CBS, & PBS local digital signals with no problem. All other digital channels are scrambled. Once the digital simulcast project is completed (sometime around April, 2006), you should be able to tune the digital versions of Comcast's analog tier as well, barring any changes in company policy.
pss3054b 12-25-05, 06:45 PM should work? no one has tested out yet.. Reason i asked is because Comcast Rep. have one clue or won't tell me.. all they want me to do is order the (STB) and added $5 to my bill. So i've been searching and search for the answer. I guess I'll get my answer on Thursday when my card comes in...
To say exactly what I had done.. I order a FusionHDTV 5 tuner card to watch TV on my PC I has (Digital(ATSC) and Analog(NTSC) TV reception ATSC 18 formats and un-encrypted 64/256QAM compliant) and getting a nicer LCD later.. but i wanted to find out if I'm wasting money because comcast has encrypted their locals just to have me pay for a box that might not work with my card, those making have to get an antenna, but i live an a apartment on the 1st floor so who knows how the signal will be..

I am not familiar with computer tuner cards, but I've got an LG-LST3410A and a Samsung SIR-T451 which tune all of the channels I alluded to in my previous post. The channels are not encrypted, so you shouldn't have any problems tuning them in. Unfortunately, the channel identification numbers vary from tuner to tuner, so I cannot tell you exactly where you'll find the local channels (I believe someone on this thread who is using a tuner card had posted the frequencies a couple of months ago...you may want to go back over the last several posts to see if you can find it).

NoUDont 12-27-05, 10:54 PM Has anyone gone with the Adelphia Cable service in West Miramar since they took over for Tele-media?
Specifically HD service. I currently have D* and it is getting way too expensive and I want a HD-DVR. What model does Adelphia use, is it worth it? My community, Silver Isles has the Basic cable included in our association costs so it would be a better deal but I dont want to degrade the HD quality. And I do know that D* is referred to as D*Lite.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Well I took Adelphia HD for a test drive. Setup the box for my tv: 1080i, tried the non HD channels in all three modes 480i,480p and off.
What did I think? Extremely disappointed with the Basic Cable and Digital Channels PQ...EXTREMELY. It looked like a sea of moving little boxes all over the screen. And I thought the Analog connection for the basic channels straight to my tv was bad before. Absolute caca.
The box is the Motorola DCT-6412. The HD-DVR worked well. But the HD channels that I could compare to D* were not as good PQ wise. No PBS, WB or UPN available PBS is listed on their website but not available, I knew the other 2 were not available. Spent all of 2 seconds on InHD1 and 2.
The guide actually has advertising on the bottom, pretty big too. You have to scroll past it when you move up and down and God forbid you click on it. Pay for a service and endure ads on the guide. I find this ridiculous and distracting.
Overall I missed DirecTv(never, ever thought I would say that!). My friend who has Comcast with the same STB doesn't notice the bad PQ as much as I do.
Sound on the other hand, the Dolby Digital stuff did sound better to me, weird.
I also picked up a digital box for the bedroom non-hd. no dvr available and the box doesn't even have a S-Video output. Really, really sad.
Tested on a Mits 65411 professionally calibrated 02/05.

Off to find a good deal for Dish Network...just don't want to pay $250 to lease the 942...oh well.
stonecrd 12-28-05, 08:37 AM NoUDont,
I think most people run the 6412 with the setting to off and try not to scale the non HD content. The 6412 is known to mangle Analog SD picture and you will ceretainly see a degradation from a direct connection, many people T off their cable and watch Analog SD by bypassing the box. With that said I think you should be getting a good picture on the HD content and Digital SD stations. I don't have Adelphia but I know most of the Comcast and Advanced Cable customer's are pretty satisfied with the picture. A lot of people have been complaining about D* since they have been reducing bandwidth, search HD-Lite. Dish seemed to have the best rep for HD and Digitial content but recently it appears that they may be reducing bandwidth as well. So to date cable seems to be the best choice for HD at full badnwidth, but the level of content is mixed and the Analog is a problem. Hopefully all cable providers will follow Comcasts lead and do digitial simulcasting so that we can see the analog signals stations in digital.

That Samsung receiver will not tune the QAM cable channels, Greg (all of the HD channels, including the locals, are in the digital range--QAM--on Comcast). But it will tune over the air ATSC channels if you connect an antenna to it (in addition to the satellite dish). However, it will tune the analog cable channels on Comcast.

pss3054b 12-29-05, 01:22 AM Question everyone with a Digital Cable ready TV or Receiver (QAM 256 set) WITHOUT comcast (STB) , what channels do you guys get?.. Comcast encrypted almost all of my channels from 125-999 like NGEO, SCICH, AZNTV, G4, MTVH etc.. (not the premium channels HBO, STARZ) just the regular does anyone get those channels with their receiver or TV without Comcast (STB) or is there something wrong with my card(Cause I know it's has QAM bulitin)?

When I tried to return the equipment the lady at the local office (with the nice rack) convinced me to have a tech come out just to make sure all the stuff on their end was ok (i'm such a sucker for a nice rack).
Well the tech got here ths morning, nice enough fella. Bowed in shame when I compared the D* to Adelphia (mostly the basic and digital, HD is pretty darn close). He checked my signal and it was "excellent" so that means that what they are sending me is total garbage.
He made a call to a fellow installer and he said the basic stuff would not look better until they were able to receive it better on their end.
Oh well, at least I was reassured that it is not my issue but theirs.
So at least I get to go to the office again to return the equipment...

Comcast has encrypted all of the digital tier channels, with the exception of FOX, PBS, CBS, NBC, WB, and ABC. Depending on your equipment's capabilities, you may be able to tune into TNT-HD and Discovery HD Theatre as well. Keep in mind that not all receivers have the exact same tuning range, so results vary from brand to brand.
gregftlaud 12-31-05, 11:25 AM on what channels with comcast are the hd locals? fox, nbc, abc, cbs
on what channels with comcast are the hd locals? fox, nbc, abc, cbs
That depends on which manufacturer's QAM-capable tuner you're using. Because the tuning range varies, the channel number assignments are not the same from tuner to tuner. For example, on my LG-LST3410A, these are the channel number assignments for the COMCAST QAM channels this particular STB can tune:
85-1 is FOX-HD
89-2 is CBS-HD
93-1 is ABC-HD
93-3 is NBC-HD (93-4 is NBC WEATHERPLUS)
109-1 is DISCOVERY HD THEATRE
109-3 is WB-HD
117-300 is TNT-HD
However, on the COMCAST Motorola set top boxes the HD locals are spread out on virtual channels 210 through 221.

As for FSN Florida HD, it is coming on-line. FoxSports.com has the Panthers HD schedule for FSN Florida (http://msn.foxsports.com/name/HD#FSFlorida). So far DirecTV is the only MSO I know will carry it. I think Comcast might too.

Yay! Sucks though the Marlins are dismantling and moving the team. Hopefully they'll lend the Dolphins their cameras for Dolphins games with CBS4, or CBS4 will finally make the move to HD. Any idea when we might get Dolphins games in HD?

What channel on Directv would the games be on? Do you have to subscribe to the NHL Season Pass?

Comcast will not activate that box...and without activation, it will not be able to receive any cable signals.
rhregis 01-06-06, 03:02 PM Mmmmm. Interesting. Thanks for the reply. I think that you can see what I am trying to do here. I have DISH, but no HD local channels and I don't want to pay another $70/mo for cable. I have tried the OTA antenna (mounted on the dish) but could not pick up ABC or CBS.
If anybody has any ideas, I'm all ears. I live in an apartment in Coconut Grove on the top floor, so I have the flexibility to mount something outside. Thanks.

Try an amplified indoor antenna...preferably one with independently adjustable VHF and UHF elements. Radio Shack should have something you can use, and if it doesn't work you can always return it. The antenna farm where all the transmitters are is located in Miramar, so you want to aim in that general direction until you can pull in most of the Miami market stations (chances are, you won't be able to get ALL of them, but it's worth a try).

Sweet FSN Florida finally is offering HD games!!!
Now all we need is for the games to be extended into West Palm on Adelphia systems. Also if dish would offer them and make it so in market folks could actually watch the game instead of only out of market folks with CI that would be awesome!

rhregis 01-09-06, 02:34 PM Thanks for the reply regarding the antenna. I went to Best Buy on Sat. and bought the Terk Slim outdoor antennafor $149. I temporarily mounted it on a piece of patio furniture. I had the antenna facing approx. due north and picked up quite a few HD channels including NBC and CBS, but no FOX or ABC. Then I went ahead and turned the chair approx. 45 degrees so the antenna would face north east, I was able to pick up ABC and FOX plus a bunch of other channels. Throughout this trial and error period, the signal strengths were pretty good.
I am sure glad I did not mount the antenna on the wall, because I would not have been able to rotate the antenna and obtain the results I did.
Here is my conclusion, I will use this antenna strictly to watch football games and other sports on HD until DISH network has local channels in HD. I will have to rotate the chair to get the desired HD channel ha,ha.
Oh, I almost forgot, I will be returning the antenna to Best Buy, because I just found it online for under $100.
Thanks for all the help.

What kind of HD are u looking for?
1. Just locals?
2. Locals plus HD Movie Networks?
3. Or as much HD as u can?
If 1. then i would with D* and an antenna ( I had the same problem with my cable, Adelphia, total garbage on the non-HD channels)
If 2. or 3. then I would go with E* because they have the Voom Pack.

I really want locals, but I'd like as much HD as possible. The main reason for the switch to Comcast would be the price. I could upgrade to HBO, a HD DVR, and keep my Comcast internet for less over the next year than I pay now for standard D*. I've had problems with Comcast customer service and the basic cable pq I have in the bedroom is crap. However, for the price I'd get way more programming and features with Comcast than D*, E*, or an OTA tuner. I can justify moving to HD if the price is right, but I can't see spending $500 for a HD DVR or even $200 on a tuner.
BTW pohnl: My Samsung DLP is only HDTV Ready, nothing onboard.

The channels definetly look worse in the lower 100s then they do the upper 100s. I'd say the uppers look digital to me, like how I had with Adelphia & close (not as good) as I had with D*. I'm pretty happy with Comcast's HD package, D* and E* just want too much for their HD setup's IMO. E* you pay the $250 upgrade (for the prime IRD) and you don't even own it. That really sucks IMO.

The CSR's are obviously confused, which is not at all surprising. Comcast DOES have digital service. Currently, channels 2 through 79 are analog; digital simulcast of the analog channels is scheduled to be available systemwide by April. All channels above 79 are digital, including National Geographic, History International, and the various iterations of the Discovery Channel. If you subscribe to the "Digital Plus 4" package on Comcast, and select HBO, CINEMAX, SHOWTIME, & STARZ as your premium channels, you'll get the HD versions of these channels (as well as their various feeds) along with the locals (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, WB, & PBS), TNT-HD, ESPN-HD, INHD1, INHD2, HDSE, and DISCOVERY HD THEATRE. The dual-tuner Motorola HD DVR makes it easy to watch one HD channel while recording another.
There is a definite and easily discernible difference in picture quality between the analog channels and the digital channels, but the Motorola HD DVR does a very poor job of upconversion on the analog channels. If you decide to get the package I suggested, I would recommend that you split the cable signal at the wall and feed a line to your TV's RF input to obtain a better picture on the analog channels until the digital simulcast conversion is completed.

Very interesting. I do not doubt the CSR's confusion. I was told that they would not upgrade any analog channels to digital untill the FCC mandates all channels broadcast in HD (2009?). I was also told that the main HBO would be available in HD, but the other HBO channels were analog. I guess this guy was way off.
Worthy1ne 01-12-06, 07:55 PM Am I late to the party on discovering the FSN now has an HD channel on the Comcast lineup? It is showing as FSNHD on channel 200. Suhweet! Although, it looks like the only programming listings in the future only show Panther games.

I get my info from corporate....I never deal with the CSR's. I've got the package I suggested you get, and I'm pretty happy with it. Just wish they had more HD movies available on the VOD service.

Sorry about not posting earlier on the addition of this channel. I frequently get advance notices on channel lineup changes, but if I don't post the info here immediately I tend to forget.

Same thing for me. I switched it back to SD (which on Comcast for me looks aweful) and sometime in the 2nd quarter they fixed the problem. Pretty strange. They say they have automatic switching and all, but I really think it's someone sitting in a booth somewhere in charge of doing the switching and they fall asleep half the time on the job.

mltor0806 01-19-06, 08:51 AM Sorry if this is a repost: I am new to these forums.
I live on the north western border of Country Walk 148 ave SW 142 st.
I have Dish Netrwork and their HD package but I use an OTA antenna for the locals and local HD.
Iget 90+ strength of signal for channels 2, 4 and 6. Problem is with 7 & 10. They can be as high as 65 and down to 49 where there is no signal.
I am using a Terk outdoor antenna ( looks like a square satellite dish ) that was purchased at best buy as none of the indoor antennas seemed to pick up any signal.
Anyone with any suggestions on a better antenna that can pick up stronger signal? I prefer a fixed location and not one I have to go constantly re-point, which is what I find myself dong with this one.
Basically looking for an optimal multidirectional OTA HDTV antenna, that is known to work in my area.
Thank you!

I am not familiar with the Terk antennae, except that most comments have been negative. Is it rated for both UHF and VHF?
Channels 7-1 and 10-1 are both VHF, while all the others are UHF. The 7-1 and 10-1 signals are usually a bit lower than those of the UHF stations, but not as low as yours.
I would suggest a standard, old fashioned 'V' shaped VHF/UHF antenna, available at Radio Shack, among many other sources.
What you should not need is a multi-directional antenna, as all of the Miami transmitters are in the same general location. So called"HDTV" antennae are no different from standard ones, except in name.

Ericglo 01-24-06, 09:42 AM I am not having problems with ABC, although I haven't really looked either.
Did anyone have any problems with Fox last night? I couldn't receive 24.
Mitchell,
Here is my thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=600736) on my DIY antenna. I specifically made it for ABC 9, but Fox is on 8. Since the channels are right beside each other, I was able to maximize the Yagi for those to two frequencies. As a side benefit, I get most of the UHF channels. I made a UHF antenna as well, but I haven't needed it. Being outside, you can go much larger than what I made.
Ericglo
I just tried calling WPLG, but I didn't get an answer. Don't know what's going on down there, but the DD5.1 is still not working.
Sorry for quoting my own post, but I just wanted to provide the context and post a follow up for people who offered me advice last time.
So, I had D* technician realign the OTA antenna, and this sort of stabilized the signal strength on my Fox HD (WSVN-DT 7.1 - MIAMI, FL). Now I can record the HD programs with just an occassional stutter and audio drop out, and the signal strength is in the upper 50s or low 60s. I observed that after the realignment, the picture quality on all the major HD networks has gone soft - may be it's a problem with the broadcast quality itself, or it has something to do with a non-optimal signal strength.
Does anybody here align the antenna yourself by measuring the signal strength? Is there a device I can buy to measure the signal strengths at the antenna instead of measuring the levels at the receiver inside the house?
And the last question is, does anyone in the Boca-Deerfield-Pompano-Coconut Creek-Margate area receive the LA or NY HD feeds by calling D* for waivers ?? If so, what phone number should I call, and what exactly should I ask for? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Ericglo 01-24-06, 10:31 AM I used a compass and antennaweb.org. Fox and ABC are VHF, so are more difficult to receive than the rest.

Sorry everyone, and kudos again to this Forum. ABC and WPLG Engineering replaced our HD and SD receivers last week, and our main HD receiver was inadvertently set to always output stereo. I did not become aware of this possibility until this past Monday AM, and we tested and repaired this AM (Tuesday 1/24), so we should be OK now.
We apologize for this and please rest assured that it was not equipment failure, just an oversite by some overworked engineers who just missed this in the setup.

I haven't noticed this, though I don't watch WBZL much. They have a fiber optic connection from the Comcast headend to the station, so I don't know if there's anything Comcast can do if there is a problem with the signal.

Great news Steve - now if only they could broadcast the Knicks game in HD..... I hope this doesn't carry over to the Super Bowl.
The Knicks game is not in HD on WPLG but is on the national DirecTV feed.
Tried calling the station - only person I could get was in the News dep't - she said engineering was closed and nobody was there - I told her someone had to be running the station - she agreed and took a message that the game was not in HD and would try to get it to someone appropriate. This is easily the best quality I've seen on ABC/WPLGDT so far. Is this due to switching off the subchannels ?? I wish ABC could look and sound this good every day.

stonecrd 02-09-06, 01:40 PM For those of us who live in Weston it looks like we will be stuck paying for Advanced Cable through 2013. The settlement is:
The rate for basic cable, 76 channels, charged by Advanced to The Town Foundation customers will be lowered from the current $36.59 per month to $36.09 per month effective January 1, 2006.
• Future rate increases will be capped at 5.5% per year; previously there was no limit on rate increases.
• The Service Agreement will permanently terminate on December 31, 2013; previously the agreement terminated on December 31, 2007 and automatically renewed every ten years thereafter in perpetuity.
• The total monthly cost billed by The Town Foundation will be reduced as the Foundation will no longer have to fund this litigation. Reductions will appear in bills in late Spring 2006.
I had hoped they would find a way terminate this agreement quicker and provide residents with more choice and better competition for service

Mike4HDTV 02-09-06, 06:33 PM For those of us who live in Weston it looks like we will be stuck paying for Advanced Cable through 2013.
This has got be the worst deal ever. The residents of Weston got screwed big time. They should have just let the contract expire next year so cable would be voluntary. Now we get a .50 decrease in our monthly bill and are required to pay for cable for another 7 years. This just sucks.
deharry 02-09-06, 06:45 PM Sorry if this is a repost: I am new to these forums.
Thank you!
Mitchell
I tried that antenna...great on looks but lousy in performance. What works for me is a Radio Shack indoor/outdoor multidirectional antenna that they sell for about $75, model #1501634. It is shaped like a 16" pizza, about 2" thick, multi diectional with an amplifier. I set it up using a patio umbrella base and a piece of 1" PVC, you can set it up for vertical or horizontal like a mushroom.
If it works in my area, sourrounded by high rise condos, and facing east, it will work for you. I get all of the miami and palm beach stations in the 80's signal.
This antenna allows me to use Comcast for the analog channels 1-99 and OTA for all locals.
Ericglo 02-09-06, 07:16 PM Certainly was better than the last Super Bowl ABC did! We have had very good feedback regarding the presentation. I think they served the HDTV transition very well.
BTW, Neilsen is now counting HD viewership. The results will be surprising for sure and I think Broadcasters all across the country will realize that the "tipping point" is here.
Steve
I really think more acknowledgement needs to be made as to just how good it was. I have a NEC XG135 CRT projector. I had the lights off and could definitely see just how good it was. Everyone from top to bottom at ABC deserves applause for this. If every broadcast was like this, then everyone would be truly amazed.

stonecrd 02-10-06, 07:15 AM I think the problem with the original Weston contract was that it rolled over every 10 years in perpetuity, automatically. So in fact there was no expiration date. I can understand how Advanced wants to recoup their development costs since they put cable in when no one else would. But it is terrible that the city has to live with a lousy contract that a developer put in place who had no plans of being around when it renewed. I expect a lot of lawyers looked at this and found no easy way out.

Where are you located?
I was finally able to point it in the right direction but still get mid 60's reception on 7 & 10 and 90's for the others.
All I seem to get are local...no palm beach except for one night where I started getting all these "phantom" stations which was pretty cool but never got those again...only that one magical night :)
Still wondering how I can optimize my setup without going to one of those "big" book antenna due to a high end WAF (Wife Acceptability Factor).
Thanks for your help. I;'ll keep you updated.

i live in weston, i am using a terk ota indoor antenna and built-in tuner in my panasonic plasma. the terk is kinda lame and flaky, but it has worked up until recently for all the channels i want. my problem is with 6.1, nbc6. i used to get a signal on this, no problem. actually, i STILL get a signal, around 74%, but i don't get a picture and the tv reports "poor signal strength" even though 74% should be plenty to at least get SOME picture - but it's totally black. any ideas?

I watched NBC6 via my set top OTA in HD. The D* national (NY) NBC broadcast was not HD. Maybe that's what you were seeing? I switched over when I saw the problem.
Although, I did notice that I wasn't getting 5.1 surround. Anyone else notice that?

Yep, we all had the blue curtains for the second night after they started having sound issues when it began. Unfortunately everything they showed should have been in HD. especially the figure skating. I popped them an e-mail instantly and they never replied. I'm in the Kendall area and all the other HD channels were working just fine. Does anybody have a phone number for NBC6 we can call, nowhere is it found on their website. Oh well, hope they fix it by tonight.

I did the same thing. I find often 5-1 broadcasts in HD when 6-1 does not. A little annoying when that happens, especially for the DVR.
OK now we got Universal HD, but how about getting new eps of BSG re-aired in HD instead of repeats? I thought UHD aired new eps, not repeats. That's a bit disappointing. Anyone have an idea of any chance of that happening? Who to contact perhaps?
gregftlaud 02-14-06, 07:22 PM anyone else experience terrible signal dropouts on digital 7-1 off air during 24 last nite?
wsvn needs to get their act together. i am only 10 miles from all the towers and everyone of them comes in ..in the high 80's low 90s yet 7-1 only has a signal strength around 68 with frequent problems.
funny thing is i'm on my 2nd antenna b/c my first was destroyed during hurricane wilma. same signal strengths on both antennas so i know it's not my antenna. i had a bi directional antenna before..a winegard...so i could get the west palm fox in alot better than wsvn as a back up, but dtv installed a new wire mesh looking directional antenna that is pointed right at the tower farm. interesting even though it is directional i can get wpb 12-1 at a better signal strength than stupid 7-1. too bad i still cant get the wpb fox.
jesus. it's feb 2006. wsvn has been broadcasting long enough in digital to have all the issues ironed out. they need to boost their power and spend some money upgrading their tower or something.

Greg--
For whatever reason, the 7-1 signal has been markedly lower ever since Wilma.
Ericglo 02-14-06, 08:01 PM Greg,
I have been without Fox for about a month now. It is almost like it died after the NFL season. Until that point, I was bringing in Fox easily. It may be a problem with my box, but all of the other stations come in loud and clear. I even made the antenna for VHF 8 and 9. I will continue to try to get them, but fortunately 24 is starting to suck which just leaves the Simpsons and Family Guy.
Ericglo
gregftlaud 02-16-06, 06:12 PM i've emailed them several times about the signal strength and told them they need to boost their power. no replies. speaks volumes!
JeffBowser 02-16-06, 06:28 PM I lost 7-1 up here in Boca since Wilma as well. I finally gave up and nudged my bidirectional Winegard a bit north to grab WPB FOX (29) better and gave up on 7. The bad thing about that is, I lost 2-x also when I did that, and 5-1 gets bad reflections. Oh well.

But, I just ordered the HD upgrade from DTV and am wondering if anyone has any experience with the H20 receiver and the 5 LNB dish. How is the HD over D? Are you using the HDMI output? Does it work well? Just curious. Thanks.

I was told by D that there is currently no local HD reception over satellite in Fort Lauderdale (don't know if that meant the Miami area) and you must get it OTA. D will install an antenna for you and integrate it into the receiver that comes with the package for a fee!

Rub it in, not me! :p Seriously, I mounted my antenna in the attic first time around and got such bad reception that I gave up. I started reading and found out that all the wood beams cause interference, don't know why, but they do. I laid my antenna on the roof and picked up everything just fine from both WPB and Miami. I am on an almost exact North South line between Miami antenna farm and WPB according to antennaweb.org. I did have problems with Fox and ABC at the beginning when I set it up, but they went away. Apparently HD OTA is the stepchild for the engineers right now. They can be aware of the problem and they will deal with it when they get to it because we are a niche community (because of both OTA reception and HD digital). As more people go HD, I think we will see more stable reception. Just my .02! And don't even ask about the audio feeds going in and out!
Ericglo 02-16-06, 11:41 PM I decided it would be easier this go time around to mount it in the attic. My last install was on top of an old telephone pole in my backyard. I didn't like the amount of cable I had to run and the potential problems with hurricanes. The problem with attic mounting is the unpredictability of the issues that arise in there. I thought I had it liked because I have it pointing through the wall it is nearest to.

I believe that is more than .02 cents. More like the jackpot.:) I think Steve the ABC engineer has said as much in this thread. If not, then it has been discussed in the past. It is a shame that people who spend money on this new equipment gets pushed to the back of the bus for the people to lazy or cheap to upgrade. Till I moved down here, I don't think I have met anyone who used OTA analog for their primary reception. The two old ladies that do use OTA could spend the money, but haven't done so. When the switchover happens, OTA HD should be great.

jtselwood 02-18-06, 11:00 AM Am I the only one who is not getting 5.1 audio for the Olympics? Is it not "available" in our market? Never been a problem getting it for football/NASCAR etc., so I don't think it's my setup. Maybe someone forgot to flip the switch?

Yes this is WHDT 44 which was supposed to go on the air 4 years ago. They are channel 59 in stuart. The last we heard they had put on channel 59 with 1kw. Basically went two blocks. That was two years ago. Their web site said they were ready to throw the switch on their 1MW channel 44 signal two years ago but they never did. I just tried 44-1 and yes it looks like they are finally on the air and at full power. Their web site is

gregftlaud 02-19-06, 06:32 PM no it's not our setups. it's 7-1 and the power strengths. it's obvious when u receive every channel in the market at almost 90 and then wsvn at only 68 that it is a problem with them not us.

I've been told they're too "busy" with the analog transmission to pay close attention to the digital signal. My question is, after 50 years of the same old NTSC technology, what the hell could they busy doing??? They all would do much better if they developed a little pride in their product.

Don't want to get into a dispute with you, but that is definitely NOT the case. All the locals have put lots of money into their OTA signals...actually, that is how Comcast, the other cable companies receive us now and eventually how Direct and Dish will get our local HD signals, so we have to care.
7.1 and 10.1 are unusual in the Miami market because we are the only two stations that broadcast HD in the VHF band. As a result of that, we are allowed only a fraction of the power that the other UHF HD stations are allowed by the FCC, under the theory that VHF propagates so much better than UHF that we have all the power we need. If you do some research, check ERP's for DTV stations around the country. You will see that our power levels are similar to V"s all over the country.
The bigger problem is that many popular antennas that retailors are selling for HDTV are not designed well at all for VHF reception. You would do very well to buy an old style, multi beam Radio Shack (or similar)VHF/UHF antenna. Understand, there really are no "HDTV" antennas. RF is RF! There is a lot of marketing , though!
I can't speak for my breathren at WSVN, but at the local stations we are VERY aware that our future in this business is the product we will deliver in big, beautiful full bandwidth HDTV. Please remember, however, that this technology is still in it's infancy, even on the transmission side and things do break!! Oftentimes having redundant components around, in some cases, is not feasable (although we are desperately trying to eliminate single points of failure).
As I've said many times before, I visit this site as often as I can and I appreciate the feedback and issues you all present, but sometimes you will hear from me defending our industry from common misconceptions! :D
Steve Ellis, WPLG/WPLG-DT
Well, VHF just isn't cutting it. It is so difficult to tune both stations that management should petition the FCC to get assignments in the UHF band. I'd call the FCC myself, but they're still mad about me pestering them to get WTVJ-HD on the air.
Rudy--
It might be a geographic or, as Steve suggested, an antenna thing. I receive both VHF stations loud and clear from about 25 miles via the smallest Radio Shack standard VHF/UHF antenna at 25'.
My WSVN-DT signal has declined about 15 points since Wilma, but reception is still good. That might be because I lost a couple of VHF tines to Wilma --although the WPLG-DT signal was not affected. Now that WPLG-DT has finally (knock wood) straightened out the 5.1 problem, all is well. By the way, WFOR-DT seems to have inherited the same problem recently. Maybe Steve hired a witch doctor to transfer it.<g>
97Strat 02-25-06, 10:34 AM Hi all, first post here. Been lurking for a while and finally decided to join. Very cool group!
I'm around Commercial west of Pine Island and I pick up all the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale stations just fine on my Samsung OTA STB w/roof antenna. Even though my antenna is directional and pointed towards the countly line antenna farm, I still pick up WFLX-DT well enough that it's watchable about 75% of the time. Signal strength hovers around 65% give or take.
WSVN-DT is definitely a bit weaker on the meter, and apparently they just got their PSIP (?) act together. For a few months my STB would only tune them in on digital 8 with no program info, but as of last week they're back on 7 with all the program info as before. However, signal strength is still a bit low. Still quite watchable though.
WLRN-DT seems to have lost their PSIP now, because the Samsung only picks up 20 and not 17, and I get absolutely no program info. Can anyone confirm it's them and not me? Thanks.
Joe
Joe,
WLRN-DT was off the air for quite a while earlier this month, and they have been having problems since they came back. There is definitely something wrong with their PSIP.

Won't happen until after '09, if it all. Channel allocations are very tight and channel changes in Florida can affect allocations all the way to the Canadian and Mexican borders. In addition, Channels 53-69 go away after the transition (out of the "core") and channels 2-6 are fairly unusable due to impulse noise that negatively affects low V's. Stations that have THOSE allocations are desperately trying to get off, and they will get first dibs. More likely is that the commish will eventually allow us a power raise, if we can prove we won't interfere with neighboring markets.
Due to the propagation ability of VHF, that may not be easy! Meanwhile, carefully check your antennas...mount one outside if you can!!

Steve, aren't there adjacent digital channels right now, at least on UHF? I really thought my STB picked up at least a couple while it was scanning. If not, then what's the closest acceptable range? IOW, would, say, digital 45 interfere with digital 47 if they were in the same area?

I do not think I have left anyone out. As you can see the core area is almost filled already.
Grampaw 03-01-06, 05:55 PM You left out Channel 39 Analog, WBZL which E* is now feeding to DMA's without a WB outlet. There are also a channel 8 analog and channel 22 analog in Key West.

gregftlaud 03-02-06, 12:05 PM a few days ago i noticed a signal drop on my off air signal meter for 7-1 and 10-1 but no change for 6-1 and 4-1.
7-1 dropped for me from 71 to about 65 and 10-1 dropped from upper 80's to upper 60-low 70's
anyone else seen this?

I have not been able to tune either WSVN or WPLG here in downtown Ft. Lauderdale, despite several attempts using 4 different amplified indoor antennas and 3 different tuners. The signal strength is just not enough to get a lock.
Ericglo 03-02-06, 11:30 PM I am not having a problem with either of the VHF stations. I am using my DIY Yagi mounted in the attic. I can't imagine how difficult it would be for an indoor antenna to pick up VHF.

97Strat 03-03-06, 07:14 AM Yes, the market does indeed seem pretty full. Thanks for the listing, dharding.
As for Rudy1's comment, out here in West Broward, WSVN-DT and WPLG-DT are both coming in just fine. WSVN-DT's signal is still a bit low (~ 85%), but viewable 100% of the time. WPLG-DT pegs the meter on my STB.

gregftlaud 03-03-06, 08:56 PM can the quality of a diplexor that splits a combined satellite/ota signal for ur dtv and ota inputs have some play with how good certain digital ota channels are received?
on my hd tivo 7-1 and 10-1 have signal strengths almost 10 points higher on ota tuner 1 compared to ota tuner 2. all other stations have almost exactly the same signal strength on both tuners and i cant for the life of me figure out why these two channels signal strengths are so different on the two ota tuners while all the others arent. could it be b/c 7-1 and 10-1 are vhf? or is my going bad diplexor theory maybe right?

renamed 03-05-06, 11:49 AM Is anyone having issues with ESPNHD and CBS-HD on comcast.... Those channels are constantly breaking up when i switch to them.
gregftlaud 03-05-06, 06:44 PM anyone else notice 10-1 ota signal went off the air for like 15 minutes today or was it just me?
also...i hate to keep harping on this 7-1 situation.......but like i stated in an earlier thread my two ota tuners were getting different signals on 7-1 and 10-1, but at least both on 10-1 are in the lower 70's so i can keep a signal lock. but now wsvn today has gone from ota tuner 1 around 68-70 and tuner 2 upper 50s low 60' ...now 1 low low 60's and 2 upper 50's both NOW with frequent dropout. anyone else's signal strength lower on 7-1 today?
i've looked at my ota antenna several times on my 2nd floor roof over the past few days and is hasnt budged one inch from when the installer put it up and i was pulling in steady 71's on both ota tuners for wsvn back then with no dropouts. i cant see what has changed other than wsvn's signal?

Supermans 03-05-06, 10:01 PM I'm trying to get ABC on HDTV as well as FOX using over the air antenna. I get all the other HDTV channels except those two. Do I need another type of antenna?? I currently have a Phillips 50db VHF/UHF/FM/HDTV digital indoor antenna. I have an HDTV with a digital tuner and reciever built in (Samsung HLR5087W). There is an Auto program setting for AIR within the menu and I get most HDTV channels. However FOX and ABC don't come in in HD. There is an option on the back of my antenna for Cable. I don't know what that is for exactly (is ther cable over antenna?, or does it have to do with a cable card?) ANy help would be appreciated.

Your TV's onboard tuner is QAM-capable, meaning that it will tune any unscrambled digital channels available from your cable company (you would need to get a CableCard if you want to watch scrambled channels, such as HBO & Showtime). If you have Comcast's basic analog service, the onboard QAM tuner in your DLP will tune all of the Miami digital stations (except for UPN, which is not in Comcast's lineup as yet). That includes ABC and FOX. Just do a scan and the tuner will find them.

i have a question for you guys.
for those of you who receive local hd channels via off air antenna.......
1. for those who live north of the digital transmitter farm what kind of signal strenghts are u getting.....on 7-1?
2. for those of you who live south of the transmitter what signal strength are u getting on 7-1?
just curious
i live north and am not getting an all time low of 58-60 from wsvn.
thanks for sharing. fyi the transmitter farm is kinda near pembroke rd and 95

gregftlaud 03-06-06, 07:02 PM ok, i just conducted an interesting little experiment with 7-1's off air signal. i hooked in my old winegard (long and flat) antenna that i used to have on top of my roof AND which i received great signals strengths inside my apartment after part of my livining room ceiling caved in and the roofers knocked down my dish and ota antenna. ok...well..during that time of not having a dish i used the winegard inside on a shelf near the top of the ceiling INSIDE. i got almost better signal strengths inside my apartment than outside but that's beside the point. this situation occurred about 1.5 months ago. now after the dtv installers put a new dish up and a new antenna everything was working great until a few weeks ago on 7-1.......and as u all know i have NO problems with all the other channels except the occasional one with 10-1. ok, well, tonite just to see i hooked up that old flat winegard antenna and tried once again to put it up high inside near the ceiling ..still couldnt crack a signal strength above 60 on 7-1 which is only 10 miles away. well..here is the hilarious part, i turned the antenna around and faced it towards west palm beach to see if i could get their fox...well...i did at a signal strength of 74..74.... and they are like 30 miles away. now if this doesnt prove there is something wrong with wsvn's signal/power then nothing else will!!! now i wish i culd use that winegard antenna indoors and set it up on a shelf like in the experiment but there would be wires running everywhere and it would look stupid. the point it wsvn needs to get their act together!!!!! for those of you who dont have any problems getting like an 85 on your signal meter for wsvn so be it but their is obviously a problem for alot of others that are trying to get wsvn's digital signal. dont know if they transmit in a higher power in certain directions (if that is possible) or what they are doing wrong. when every channel in the market comes in at a solid 90 and one channel alone hardly gets a 60 that says alot about that channel. i called their engineering department tonite and they sounded like a bunch of freaks smoking crack. i think they have no clue what's up. but there definately is a problem with them i'm sure of it now

Damn !! Did anyone have any problems during the two hour 24 tonight ?? The bleeming WSVN-DT reception went bonkers during most of the show - the whole video jerking and sputtering with consistent freezing every 1-2 seconds - macroblocking so bad that video on the screen was a big 720p rubik cube !!
I lost virtually the entire last 10 minutes of the show !!

Hey all, just dropping in to say hello.
I've been a lurker for about a month now, trying to soak up as much info as I can.
From the Ft. Lauderdale metro area (Lauderdale Lakes), hoping to dive into
HDTV next week, when the tv arrives.
Currently researching antennas/diplexers to modify my current DishNetwork setup.
I hope it works out.
[steps down from podium]
Steve, aren't there adjacent digital channels right now, at least on UHF? I really thought my STB picked up at least a couple while it was scanning. If not, then what's the closest acceptable range? IOW, would, say, digital 45 interfere with digital 47 if they were in the same area?
Joe
Adjacent channels are allowed, in market, but there is a signal strength penalty that is theorically being paid on the receive end...believe it or not, there is a digital channel 9 in Fort Myers (WINK-DT)...it kind of limits us in how much power we can put out to the West. We protested the FCC's decision, but they allowed that anyway.
This is going on all over the country. Things will get better when analog shuts down in '09 (we will, in all probability, move to channel 10 with our DT and move to increase power). Stations nationally will have a lot more flexibility to move positions to increase service to viewers.
Steve

I posted a question about antennas, and it was suggested to ask here
for local advise.

My locals through Dish Network, are the Miami channels.
If I can duplicate this with an ota antenna, that would be cool.
If I can get Palm Beach stations to, that would be a bonus.
I like the look of the Winegard antenna, but if its the wrong move for me, let
me know, and if you may can you suggest another antenna that you recommend
for this area (thats not too big/bulky)...
Thanks
gregftlaud 03-07-06, 06:18 PM the long flat winegard antennas are GREAT. when i first upgraded to hd in may 2004 dtv installed one of those for me and it was perfect i even got the west palm locals. but after wilma dtv had to install a new antenna one of those square mesh/fence looking antennas with two metal type "x's" on the top and bttm, doesnt work so good so i today went out and bought an in line amplifier from radio shack hooked it up inside instead of directly to the antenna and gained about 7 points on 7-1 which was the only channel i was having problems with

I live in downtown Fort Lauderdale, but the headend manager assures me that all Comcast subscribers have access to the local digital stations I mentioned in my previous post. On my Samsung SIR-T451 set top box, ABC is at 93-1, and CBS is at 89-2. It may differ on your TV's tuner though, so you can't just rely on the TV's channel scan feature to find the channels...you'll need to go into the ADD/DELETE CHANNEL menu and go from channel to channel (yeah, I know it takes forever, but it's worth the effort).

Thanks for the input.
I suspect the ABC 93.1 designation is associated with your STB. Since my tuner is built in, the channels come up as 4 and 4.1, 7 and 7.1 and 10 and 10.1, etc.
When I hook up the cable (right now I am OTA) I don't receive any channels above the 60's and assumed that was because I am on the Basic analog cable service.
Even when I review the ADD/Delete function on the TV it doesn't give me options above the 60's.
I am still looking for any thoughts on HD Cable vs DirecTV as my HD source - Does anyone have any experience with this or can you suggest a better place to find information on this?

When you asked if my comment applied to Fort Lauderdale as well, I thought you had the very same TV as Supermans does (a Samsung DLP with onboard ATSC/QAM tuners). If your TV (regardless of brand) has a built-in QAM tuner, it will pick up the unscrambled channels on Comcast even if you only subscribe to the analog package. However, if your set only has onboard ATSC tuning capability (along with NTSC cable tuning), you won't be able to tune any of the Comcast digital channels. You will only be able to tune OTA digital frequencies.
uh yah SELLIS i know what frequencies 7-1 and 10-1 are on. exactly why did u feel a need to post that and exactly how does that help me?
I've had an experience similar to yours with WSVN, so I don't bother trying to contact them anymore. In fact, I've wasted so much time and money trying to get a consistently strong lock on the signals from both WSVN & WPLG that I've given up on them completely. I have biased my antenna to pull in the signal from WFLX, and when I have to watch WLPG I do so via Comcast. I can appreciate the constraints placed upon both stations by FCC regulations, but other stations throughout the country have faced the same hardships and dealt with it much better. Maybe if the advertisers were a little more concerned about the loss of a certain segement of their viewers (i.e., the ones most likely to be able to afford the things being advertised), the stations would do whatever it takes to make sure their digital signal was received clearly by ALL viewers.
I heard that HD quality is better on cable.

HD picture quality IS better on Comcast cable. However, Dish Network has far more HD channels than both Comcast and DirecTV. So I guess one could rank them as follows in terms of value:
Comcast cable (few channels but excellent quality)
Dish Network (more channels but with slightly lower quality than cable)
DirecTV (more channels but with noticeably lower quality than cable)

You might want to check my DIY antenna thread. Just click on my name and threads started. I designed my antenna specifically for channel 9 VHF, but close to channel 8. It works well in the attic and would probably give me an even better signal outside. The UHF channels come in as well. I actually made an antenna for UHF, but I haven't needed it yet.

I just advised the headend manager about this, and he's going to look into it. He thinks it's just related to a change in transponders and does not mean that the channel is actually going away.

Cool beans... I was thinking about dropping Comcast if they remove one more HD channel. Still kinda pissed that they removed UHD.
Cool beans... I was thinking about dropping Comcast if they remove one more HD channel. Still kinda pissed that they removed UHD.
Bandwidth management is their biggest challenge, but more HD channels are coming (no, I was not told which ones). They are also hoping to introduce "Enhanced Basic" service soon; it is an upgrade to the existing "Expanded Basic" service that will allow current analog cable customers use a small set top box to access VOD content presently only available to digital subscribers. If this works out as planned, they will be able to move to all-digital systems much more quickly, freeing up the bandwidth necessary for more HD channels.

It sounds like your boxes have lost all programming/guide info; call customer service to have them reset the boxes. FWIW, all cable STBs are required by law to have working IEEE 1394 ports. As for the HDMI equipped boxes, you should do a search in the hardware forum...many people have been having problems with theirs.

Aaron1337007 03-13-06, 01:29 PM Hello, HDTV gurus.

I have just purchased the Sammy LN-R3228W and have everything the way I want it (thanks to Snork in the LN-R328W thread), except for one thing... Digital ATSC and HD cable.
A little background:
I live in Plantation, am a college student, and don't have a cablebox in my room (but we do have Comcast digital cable in the house, and I do receive HBO 1 and 2 on my TV (ch 98 and 99, respectively)).
I would like to know if:
1) There is an ATSC receiver that would allow me to watch the same programming as the Comcast digital cable box.
and
2) If the Sammy's 'Anynet' technology using the SIR-T451 would allow me to accomplish number 1 (they have them on Amazon for about $150). I have tried to research the technology using Google and Sammy's website, but so far haven't turned up anything concrete either way.
I was watching the Sopranos yesterday (and the Discovery Channel) and noticed alot of pixelation that wasn't present with my old CRT TV on every channel (I understand that LCD HDTV's have a sharper picture quality which allow the viewer to see all the inherent flaws in the signal).
My setup:
Yamaha receiver (two component in (DVD, Xbox360), one component out (to TV), two optical digital in (again, DVD and Xbox360), I have my PS2 hooked up via the S-Video input piping directly through the receiver to the TV, and my old Xbox hooked up to the front AV on the receiver).
I have one component in remaining on the TV that I would like to use for a digital tuner...
Am I aiming too high wanting to use something other than Comcast's digital cable box to receive their HD signal (we have the digital package)?
slimoli 03-13-06, 05:20 PM Can anybody here give me any idea about the picture quality from Atlantic Broadband X Concast X Directv? I have a 73" Mitsubishi and I'm disappointed with Directv. Many thanks for any help.

I have one of those Winegards sitting in the garage collecting dust. Put it up on the roof (single-story house) and all I got was ghosting on analog. Didn't even try digital, as analog was barely watchable.
Replaced it with a CM 3016 from Lowe's for $35 (non-amplified) and all digital channels are now wall-to-wall on my STB, even after a splitter. Even analog is now pretty good; Channel 6 is even watchable. No digital in the bedroom yet...
I'm in the vicinity of Commercial & Pine Island; the 3016 is aimed a few degrees east of due south.

You'll have to use one of Comcast's Motorola STBs to view those channels. I've got a Samsung SIR-T451, and it only tunes the unscrambled QAM channels; however, those include ABC, NBC, CBS, WB, PBS, FOX, TNT-HD, and Discovery HD Theater. AFAIK, the only other way to access the scrambled channels without using a cable box is through the use of a display or STB with CableCard capability.
As for the pixellation, it might be due to a weak signal. Go to the Motorola website and you'll see an inline amp which works perfectly on Comcast's system.
What is the latest and greatest HD DVR box that Comcast offers here in Miami? I have been using the 6412 but is there something better than this that is available now? Just want to try to get the best thing I can when I go into the Comcast office. Thanks in advance.

Well the antenna is up.
I still have to get a compass, and see if I can aim it a little better (I think it pointing too much to the SE).
Its not too bad. Most of the analog channels do ghost a bit.
It didn't pick up a few of the vhf stations, but I'll see if Im aimed correctly.
Digital stations, seem to be coming in good.
A quick scan of the channels, showed all stations getting above 80% signal strength,
with 2 stations getting around 50%.
So I got my first personal taste of HD, with Jay Leno last night.
It was good. Hope to see more HD programming :D

Im right off Commercial & 441.
Im going to attempt facing it dead south, and see what would happen...
Ericglo 03-17-06, 01:15 PM trini0,
Do you have a compass? Go to Antennaweb (http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx) and find out the exact direction you need to point the antenna.

In general, from my perspective, the majority of the antennas, are pretty much
North and South of me.
But I plan on getting a compass this afternoon, so I can get a more
accurate reading as to where South is.
In the meantime, I did move the antenna, so its pointing more in a southerly direction.
I picked up more digital channels, but the analog channels (the weak ones) didn't
change much.
Here is a "subjective" run down of what I'm getting ->

Looking at my antennaweb page, the antennas aren't exactly North/South.
But NNE/SSW.
So I'll find out how things change, after I get the compass...
BTW. Is anyone picking up anything from Digital channel 19 (39-1/WB).
I'm getting 100% signal strength, but no video/audio...
Grampaw 03-17-06, 09:17 PM WBZL had a problem earlier this evening with program audio during "Fran", but the audio on the commecials seemed to work just fine.....
Your list doesn't include channel 6-1 ?

Excellent. Thank you for the information, Rudy!

Too many channels :)
I added it to my list.
WBZL is still a no show, even though I have 100% signal strength.
So does a stronger signal strength not equate to a better digital signal????
yanksno1 03-18-06, 01:15 PM EDIT: Hit the submit button too fast.
yanksno1 03-18-06, 01:17 PM Anybody been watching CBS4 for march madness? Their switching has been pretty bad. Right now I'm watching the GW vs. Duke game and no audio from the commentators (only crowd and music). This has happend a couple other times as well. Also, a bunch of times when they go back to the studio for updates they don't take us there. It just stays on the game. Very annoying, wish they'd get with the program (if it's CBS's 4 problem, not the mothership CBS).
Well, I got a compass.
What I thought was south was SSE. So I faced the antenna, to a little west of South,
but the stations didn't change.
Im still not getting WBZL-DT (39-1), even though Im getting 100% signal strength.
I dont know what that is happening.
According to antennaweb.org, WLTV-DT (23-1) has the same location as WBZL-DT (as far as distance, compass orientation), and Im getting it with no problems..
Not sure what else to do here, and Im about to give up on it. :(
Ericglo 03-18-06, 04:17 PM I have no problem with 19. Have you tried simple rabbit ears? With the UHF stations, you may be surprised that you actually get them. Make the distance between the tips around one foot and see what happens.
Ericglo
slimoli 03-18-06, 07:33 PM I can't get WBZL -DT anymore on my Mitsibishi 73927 TV. Everything was fine until 3 days ago. I still get it through my HD-TIVO but I wonder if they changed something . Signal is very strong but no picture comes up.

The signal is hot for me (100%).
I hope its a glitch in the matrix, that gets fixed, soon.

I dont think I have rabbit ears handy at the moment.
Need to see if I can borrow a pair...
gregftlaud 03-20-06, 11:04 AM trinio are u getting 7-1, 10-1?? are u in a house because my antenna is on the 2nd floor of an apt complex so it is higher up. u get a better signal the higher up the antenna is
slimoli 03-20-06, 08:57 PM My 39-1 is back!
Yeah!!
Just came home from work, and after reading slimoli's message found that WBLZ is now
working for me.
So it was a glitch in the Matrix. :D
I live in a single floor house. The dish/antenna, is at the hightest point on the roof.
Ok, now Im good. Time to figure out how to adjust video to be its best...
Act would take cities out of cable dealings
Boca Raton city officials object to the proposal and will vote to ask other legislators to oppose it as well.

It's the promise of smaller cable bills vs. the threat of poor customers being left behind.
That's at the heart of a debate raging in Tallahassee over the way the state regulates the cable industry.
A piece of legislation called the Consumer Choice Act of 2006 would take away every city's and county's right to negotiate directly with cable providers. Instead, those companies would deal only with the state.
Boca Raton city officials oppose the proposed law and plan to vote on a resolution today asking Gov. Jeb Bush and other legislators to oppose it as well.
City Manager Leif Ahnell sent the City Council a detailed memo last week outlining how the bill would "negatively impact the city's cable television regulatory authority," including preventing the city from renewing an agreement with Adelphia Communications, the largest cable operator in Palm Beach County, and possibly losing its local access channel.
In Tallahassee, critics say the legislation would create an environment in which companies could choose to serve only affluent areas while ignoring those with fewer residents able to pay for premium services.
"That's what this battle is all about. You can dress it up any way you want, but it's not about consumers," said Steven Wilkerson, president of the Florida Cable Telecommunications Association.
Supporters, however, say it would allow phone companies, which need to spend millions of dollars upgrading copper wiring to fiber-optic cables, to get into the cable business faster, fueling competition that could push cable rates down as much as 20 percent.
"We are in a completely new environment. It's time to acknowledge that," said Rep. Anthony Traviesa, R-Tampa, author of the House proposal (HB 1199). "In the present environment, consumers lose big-time."
Florida is just one of many states wading into the debate. Similar laws already have been passed in Texas and Virginia, while a version in Indiana awaits the governor's signature. Also, Congress is considering a proposal that would give the Federal Communications Commission the authority to grant franchises.
That's putting increased pressure on state legislators to do something sooner, rather than later. They worry they'll wait too long and then be among the last to see the benefits of increased competition, including the network upgrades and new jobs that could come with them, said Paul Gallant, a media analyst for the Stanford Washington Research Group in Washington, D.C.
"That's clearly attractive to state legislators," Gallant said.
For the nation's phone companies, the change represents a way to avoid months, if not years, of negotiations with local governments.

How can we know this?
slimoli 03-26-06, 12:08 AM For those using Atlantic Broadband, can you tell me how is the picture quality X satellite? Comments on the HD and SD quality would be great. I am VERY concerned about using a small cable company because I had bad experiences before in NYC.
Thanks

They are still off the air as of this writing.
How can we know this?I have a MyHD tv tuner in the computer and it displays the resolution when you tune to each channel.
WFOR is also backup.
TexanExile 03-26-06, 08:49 PM I think the problem with the original Weston contract was that it rolled over every 10 years in perpetuity, automatically.
Speaking of raw deals associated with @%*(@#&$ Advanced Cable, why don't they carry WFOR in HD? They offer local NBC, ABC, and FOX in HD but no CBS.
Since I HAVE to pay for it, it'd be nice if I could watch the affiliate I really want (for AFC football and NCAA hoops) to watch in HD. My OTA experiments have pretty much failed for that particular station.
wfor 4-1 is back down anyone know why 4-1 is giving problems today
Grampaw 03-26-06, 10:29 PM WFOR-DT has been off the air since the end of the Florida-Villanova game. At least it was on
for the games this afternoon, has been off all evening.

CBS for whatever reason seems to be the one network that always has contract issues. Advanced has said they have been working on this contract for at least 18mos now. I know when I lived out in SF Comcast had a lot of problems getting CBS-HD and it was the last carrier added. It is a pain and the main reason I still use my OTA tuner. I would really like to use my HD-DVR though since I have to watch all of the CBS shows in realtime w/commercials. Mayby that is their plan. BTW- the OTA really comes in handy during Hurricane season.
