View Full Version : Miami, FL - HDTV
Ed, the distance from the Miami antenna farm to Key Largo is approximately 60 miles. I live by FIU and my distance to the Lantana site is about 60 miles also, and the WFLX-DT signal comes in at 95% on my Sony HD100, using an 8 Bay Bow-tie antenna. You might run into some problem with WPLG, as they don't run a lot of power, and they are on VHF Ch.9. I use an Antennacraft 10 element Ch. 7-13 Yagi, at about 20 feet, and their signal is about 86%. I am not sure whether the antenna you want covers those channels. Channel 8 (Fox) is from 180 Mhz-186 MHz, and channel 9 (ABC) is from 186-192 MHz. One thing I recommend is a rotor, as there are funny multi-path signals that can kill the DTV reception. I have a problem with the new Ch.33 (on DT 32). If the closest analog station has a lot of multipath (ghosting), so will the DT. I have no problems with 17 and 23 analog, so the DT stations on 18, 19, 22, and 24 come in (98%, but I do get a lot of ghosting on 33 and 39, and the Ch.32 DT is unusable, constantly breaks up. If I rotate a little, I can get it fine. Channel Master sell a very nice rotor that has a remote control, and you can preset channel bearings on it, and it goes perfectly to the stations. I just bought a Deep Fringe Yagi for UHF from Antennacraft, and I am waiting for a chance to put it up. The target is the NBC station in Ft. Myers. With my antenna now, I get it from the side, as I am not aimed at it, but once I aim at it, I think I will pull in a good signal 90% of the time. Love testing this stuff.
Best regards,
Jose

Thanks for for your advice. I am encouraged to press on.

TimHuey 11-13-02, 10:15 PM Anyone have an opinion on this antenna? I will be living on the beach in a condo on the 10th floor in Fort Lauderdale. I will be facing west (can't afford the beach view). If I put this on the balcony, I should have a no problem getting the full range of South Florida Stations right?
http://www.terk.com/tv/product/tv50.html
If this won't work, is there another model with similar design I should look at?
Tim Huey
Tim, I would like for other members to comment, but I have not heard good comments about the Terk products on the HDTV group that I check into. Please do some research on it, and get comments from others on this antenna. The 4 Bay Bow-tie antenna is a very nice antenna for your UHF stations, and if you could fit a small VHF antenna, it would be ideal. When I was living in a 2nd. floor apartment in Boca, I had the 4 Bay and a 5 element Ch.7-13 antenna on the balcony. The apartment complex never complained, and I used to log 90+ signals from all the stations, including all the Miami, as well as WFLX, that was very close. On channel 16.1 I used to get 83% of the side of the antenna. On a 10th. floor apartment, I think you are in luck. Check www.starkelectronic.com, as they carry all the stuff from Antennacraft, Winegard, and Channel Master. I am sure you can find something that will give you plenty of enjoyment in a pretty stealth installation. As a matter of fact, if you take the 5 element 7-13 antenna, and take out the first element from the front, making it a 4 element, you should be able to get away with it. You can easily try it by just not opening up that element. If it gives you a decent signal, fold up the one next to it, making the antenna only 3 elements. Believe me, it might work quite well.

George33027 11-19-02, 04:58 PM drguava (or anyone else)
I am trying to rotate my antenna to get maximum signals, and thank you DrGuava for your information, it is very helpful.
But, in order to do signal strength, I need channel and the remap of it.
So far, I know :
Channel Remap
28 29-1 WPB FOX
15 20-1 Ft Meyers NBC
I don't know your 34-1 and 16-1 channels from WPB.
Is 16 25-1 ABC in WPB ?
I know
22 = 4-1
18 = 2-1
19 = 39-1
Here is a listing of all of the digital channels:
http://www.nab.org/newsroom/issues/digitaltv/dtvstations.asp
Unfortunately it doesn't include remaps. Hope this helps.
George33027 11-19-02, 06:14 PM This helped a lot.
But,I still don't know what 34-1 is, it must be a remap of something.
Anyway, I think for WPB it is:
28, 16
TimHuey 11-19-02, 09:14 PM Which one of the local digital stations retransmit HDTV broadcast from the source, in otherwords, not upconverted at the local station.
Tim Huey
George33027 11-22-02, 07:09 PM Depends on the broadcast.
CBS does the most.
By the way, I think I found that 34-1 is remapped channel 50.
George33027 11-25-02, 06:04 PM Since I remounted my antenna, and did a rotate and search, I can not get ch 15 or 16 anymore.
Question:
Is Ch 15 (remap to 20-1 in Ft. Meyers) still transmitting?
I used to get some signal locks, but now it is at zero.
Maybe the weather change caused some signal change but, just want to confirm they are still on the air after 5 PM.
I also have the same signal problem with ch 16 (WPB remap to 25-1)
I do believe it is me, but just want to confirm that these signals are still present.
George33027 11-27-02, 11:03 AM Does anyone know the zip code for UPN ?
I can't get a guide update for that channel.
Also, is anyone still getting ch 15 ?
drguava 11-27-02, 12:15 PM George,
I am still getting 20-1 but seems that I can only get it at night after 8:00pm.

Hello to all !
New to this group. And new to HDTV. Having a blast.
My question is:
I want to get the NBC in Ft Myers 15 to 20-1. I live in Coral Springs. Thats 104 MI.
I have a 70 foot tower. How much of an antenna will I need to do this.
drguava 11-29-02, 09:11 PM All I have is GS1000 with Channel master AMP about 20' off ground attached to my satellite.
However I only get channel 20-1 at night in fact right now my son is watching the Muppets Chritsmas movie in HD.
dr guava
Per TitanTV.com, NBC Channel 55 WPTV-DT is scheduled to go live by March 1st, 2003. NBC Channel 6 WTVJ-DT is still showing July 1st, 2003, as their "go live" date.
Rudy1, would it be possible for you to find out the schedule for when WBFS will be showing movies from the Paramount HD One package they subscribe to? I tried emailing the programming person there but I got no reply. Thanks.
Will
Will,
I will email the engineer at UPN 33 to see if he has the info available.
Rudy
George33027 12-04-02, 07:52 PM Does anyone know what times Ft Meyers Ch 15 ==> 20-1 is transmitting?
I know DrGuava gets it at night, but, I am curious if it is skip or they are playing or testing with different power levels.
I seem to have lost all signals. Yet, I did get it a few weeks ago.
Now it would be nice if WPTV will go live in testing mode.

I heard they are on air from 8:00 to Midnight, I have not received any signal from them, How was your signal when you got it ?
drguava 12-05-02, 06:52 AM Last night I did not have a signal for 20-1 it was 0%. The night before it was fine watched INLAWS and FRASIER. THe power level varies from about 60% to as high as 88%(later in the evening).
Dr Guava
George33027 12-06-02, 11:12 AM Mine used to vary from 5 to 55%.
Obviously, when down near 5%, I got no video, but I got lock.
Now, all I get is zero.
It sounds like it is a combination of skip and transmission testing.
What we need is to contact the station to see when they are really transmitting, then we will know if it is skip, or, transmission problems.

Just spoke to the engineer at WFLX...he said they are only on the air now from 6pm to midnight. WSVN is on the air.

Have you any contact with the Ft. Meyers NBC station ch 15 that remaps to 20-1?

They were not on the air yesterday from 9 to 10.
Does this mean for sure that they will not be on for widescreen football on Sunday at 4?
I just spoke to Butch Figurella at WFLX; he says they had some problems with equipment and parts had to be ordered. He expects to hopefully be back on the air tonight.
As for WBBH-DT in Fort Myers, the engineer says that they should be going to full power in the next few months; this may benefit those of you who are now currently able to receive their signal, but he was very surprised to learn that anyone over here could pick up their signal at all.
It's now mapped to 12-1 CBS and 12-2 is live radar (COOL) with Audio...
This would be a nice addition to the area.
David McRoy 12-12-02, 05:57 PM Please see my post on the West Palm Beach, FL DTV thread about a program test tonight on WPEC-DT(CBS), West Palm Beach.

Woa! Cool. I use Live Radar online now to check out the weather before going out fishing.
Great to know I can pick it up OTA
Tuesday I will have HD receiver, can't wait!
Put up my antenna on the roof yesterday. Man I hate heights, never again! If I need to aim it, I am sending my wife up there. lol j/k
TimHuey 12-13-02, 09:11 PM I can get 39-1 at a strength of 95 to 98 but I get no picture. The station is WBZL-DT. Anyone else having this problem?

David McRoy 12-13-02, 10:45 PM Tim,
I'm getting picture and sound on 39-1 right now (10:45 p. m.)
TimHuey 12-14-02, 12:01 AM Nope! Still getting a blank image. I wonder if I'm getting some kinda weird Multipath signal. I'm at 88 signal strength and no image.
Does anyone here have a DTC-100 and receive a picture on 39-1 WBZL-DT?

Softreboot the receiver or do a rescan on the channels
Kwikdraw 12-15-02, 02:39 PM Hi to all, as you can see I'm new to this forum as well as HDTV. I got my new HDTV (Hitachi 51uwx20b) last week as well as a Samsung SIR-T165 STB and a Trek42 antenna that is attached to my DirecTV dish. I live about a mile NE of University Dr. & Pines Blvd. This can not be no more than 8 miles from the "antenna farm" in North Dade. The Problem I'm having is getting channels 7-1, 2-1, 47-1, 51-1 or any of the West Palm Beach channels. I do get ABC (10-1), CBS (4-1), UPN (32-1),WB (39-1), PBS (2-2,2-3) and 24-1 (hispanic). I can rotate the Trek 42 around the dish to get different combinations of channels but not all at once. My question is to anyone with the Trek42 or similar type of antenna, can you get all the channels in Miami/Broward county? I've been reading that the Trek is not that good of an antenna. Am I being unrealistic thinking that I should to able get all the channels in Miami/Broward?
Thanks,

Kwikdraw welcome aboard,
First think is to chnge that antenna, I am sorry to say this but that antenna Sucks big time..
Go to www.antennaweb.org you will find the best antenna selection for your locations, you should be able to pick all digital chanells without a problem
George33027 12-17-02, 12:29 PM i believe the major problem is the amp that comes with the Terk.
I had one, and got rid of it.
Kwikdraw 12-18-02, 12:52 AM yeah, I'm kinda stuck with the trek. I threw the box and receipt away and the wife won't let me get a new one :-( However, I was able to re-position the antenna so that I get all the channels now (Miami/Broward). The only thing saving me is that I live so close to the antenna farm in No. Dade. If it wasn't for that I would be SOL. I just hope when NBC comes on line I can get it.
Kwik
George33027 12-19-02, 07:46 PM Play around with the preamp, that is, turn it off and turn it on and see how the picture is.
Some times it works better with the power off.
I had a trek, and I think there is some kind of pass through circuit.
This area isn't bad for digital reception with any antenna.
It is the far off stations that challenge the antenna.
Mr Gimme 12-20-02, 11:17 AM What does it take to pull the max range?
I have the TERK 42 and if it can't go back it will go in the garbage.
I want a shot at pulling in Fort Myers!
I plan on buying the Channel Master 3320 (goes to violet) and putting it at least 10 feet above my house which is located 1 mile due north of the Sawgrass Best Buy.
I will add the CM 7775 amp in time (a rotor will probably come first)... My STB is the E86
***INSTALL QUESTION*** What is the best way to get the antenna signal into the box? Using a diplexer outside and then again inside?
I know I can only get help based on what I want so here is my question:
With this rig what can I expect to pull? I know my mileage will vary and the rotor will be essential for pointing towards Palm Beach and back to Dade. I guess I would like to start a mini survey:
What can YOU pull?
1. Antenna Make and Model / Amp Make and model plus height above roof line
2. Location of residence
3. What do you get?
I will go first...
1. Terk 42/ Built in Amp, mounted on Dish
2. Oakland Park Blvd. and Flamingo
3. When I first set this up I was getting WPBT and Spanish stations. Not enough!
David McRoy 12-20-02, 11:24 AM The best way of getting the local OTA antenna feed into the STB is with a seperate, dedicated coax for the OTA antenna. Eliminate diplexers.
snook789 12-21-02, 04:44 AM After reading the post here this morning that the AFC playoffs will be in HD on CBS, I have to try to pick CBS up.
I am in Naples, where is the closest CBS tower to me ? (none show on antennaweb.org)
Thanks!
dharding 12-21-02, 03:25 PM I sent an email to WHDT asking them when they would turn on their Miami transmitter. They sent me the following reply.
"WHDT-44 Miami recently received FCC authorization for full power DTV operation. As soon as the transmitter is upgraded in February, you will receive the transmission of full service station WHDT-59 Stuart on channel 44. WHDT's broadcast schedule is attached."
They also sent me a pdf with the coverage map of channel 44 and their current schedule. This is very good news. Another source of HDTV. Now if we could just get NBC.
What type of programming does WHDT offer?
dharding 12-21-02, 05:53 PM Here is the pdf of their coverage map.
dharding 12-21-02, 05:58 PM Here is the pdf with their program schedule. They will simulcast channel 59.
Mr Gimme 12-23-02, 10:56 AM Well I put up my Channel Master 3020 and am semi happy.
It seems I havent gained much out of Miami. But what I do get is better in terms of signal strength. I need to do a full inventory and will post later. Basically I have WPBT, WBFS or DZL (not sure which) and then spanish stations.
More interesting is the Palm beach stations when I spun the antenna (manually for now) I picked up CBS out of West Palm! Woo Hoo! Also the fox affilliate. I think its 29...
Sorry to be so sparse on details, I did not even use a compass to point it. YET!
Question for senior members- Isn't a signal amplifier like the Channel Master 7775
really just for bumping poor signals, rather than bringing in stations that do not register?
We are in for a Movie Treat in ABC. The following is the listing of the Movies (in HD) that will be shown in ABC. Impressive!
January
9 - X-Team
11 - Enemy of the State
12 - 101 Dalmatians
16 - Snow Day
19 - Sounder
23 - Forces of Nature
25 - Mission Impossible
30 - Columbo Likes the Night Life
February
6- NTSB: The Crash of Flight 323

hi i will be buying a hdtv in the next few weeks and i wanted to ask anyone in the middle keys area was having good reception of the channels in the miami area or if only the two listed in antenna.org are the ones that i am limited to i will purchase the tv regardless since i ll be gettin some of my dishnet satellite but i wanted to know if it be worth to go through the expense of putting up an antenna and so forth , if anyone has any friends or has a personal knowledge i would appreciate all the help i could get :)
jmck0915 12-27-02, 03:42 PM Hello,
Is the Miami PBS station still broadcasting HD material? I was getting the PBS demo loops, and occasional new material on 18-1, 18-2, or 18-3 (remapped to 2-1, 2-2, or 2-3) on my mits hd-5 stb until about 2 weeks ago. The channel of HD material would jump between 2-1 and 2-3. I have tried rescanning the locals, and the only thing that shows up is intermittent low res material on 2-1...no HD stuff. Anyone else notice this?
Thanks,
dharding 12-27-02, 03:53 PM Yes they still are on 2-1. They are also simucasting their analog on 2-2 which is causing the video to stutter sometimes on 2-1 although the past week it has been better. I just checked at 3:52pm today and both 2-1 with HD demo loops and 2-2 simucasting their analog are on now. I have a Samsung SIR-T150 set top box. :D

Thanks. I thought it might be something with the STB(maybe my antenna??), I will check it again when I get home today.

I am receiving the analog on 2-2, and have received nothing but the header (blank screen) on 2-1 for several days (weeks?), although it is in the guide. (E86)
I just discovered that I am receiving the demo loop on 18-1 with no guide data; and nothing but a header on 18-2. All of the above are checked on the channel list. Apparently, 18-1 is not remapping.
Weird!
They have been doing some testing on their encoders over the past few weeks. As of right now, I'm getting SD feeds on 2-2 (the analog simulcast) and on 2-3 (their special Science & Nature programming). This arrangement usually airs between 6pm and 8pm weekdays, and then after 11pm most evenings. Otherwise, you get HD on 2-1 and the SD analog feed on 2-2.

Hmmm....the encoder testing might be effecting my mitsubishi hd-5 STB's differently than others....I am still only seeing SD on 18-2, remapped to 2-2, and 18-1/2-1, or 18-3/2-3 have nothing. I tried rescanning locals, clearing all locals with rescan, and pulled the power for a hard reset....stilll no HD feeds (only feed is SD on 2-2). I have two hd-5's and both are only getting 2-2 today (and for the last couple of weeks). I am going to try and keep power off for at least 5 minutes to maybe try and clear out any local channel info. Maybe I am just doing my rescans when there is no HD programming on.
jmck --
The problem is at the station rather than with your receiver. Earlier this evening, my E86 was blank on all of the 2- and 18- channels while the signal meter was at 100.
A bit later, 2-2 was back with analog and 18-1 showed the PBS HD loop. There was nothing on any of the other channels.
TimHuey 12-28-02, 01:02 AM I just bought a Silver Sensor from Circuit City on Federal and Sunrise, $39. I can get 20-1 NBC (Fort Myers?) no problem, no amplification. I still can't get 39-1 to come in, I have a 98% signal. I think it's a reciever problem. Maybe it doesn't like the signal their equipment puts out.
Stations I get:
2-1, 2-2, 2-3,4-1, 10-1,20-1,20-2(WBBH), 23-1, 26-1 (very infrequently), 33-1, 51-1, 69-1 (weak, had to turn antenna)
Location:
Las Olas and A1A (10th floor, facing west)

No way really! That is almost 100 miles away! (right near me)
This antenna is indoor ?
What is your signal strength ?
26-1 is on the same tower as 20-1, surprise you don't get it in better...
I have been wanting to get a big antenna and try to pick up CBS in Miami, and now you give me hope...
Tim
TimHuey 12-28-02, 09:43 AM Holy moly! I didn't realize it was 100 miles to WBBH 20-1. Thats one heck of a job for this little unamplified antenna. Of course being up at 100' in the air is probably beniffical too. That's disappointing that I can't get 26-1, I figured it was up in West Palm Beach. This little guy is very directional. So it has to be pointed at the location to get the station. Thank goodness they put up antenna farms.
I just want: ABC,NBC,CBS,UPN,PBS,WB,FOX in HD without having to move my antenna or hold my hand in the air with my left leg extended.
Tim Huey
TimHuey 12-28-02, 10:18 AM I'm having no luck recieving the FOX stations. I wonder if it's a reciever problem. Does anyone recieve either 19-1 or 7-1 using a RCA DTC-100 HDTV reciever? I get well over 80 signal strength and rock solid but no picture. It's like the reciever doesn't understand the format.
Tim Huey
snook789 12-28-02, 03:31 PM Tim
Sure is amazing. And this is antenna is indoors ?
What signal strength are you getting on 20-1 ?
I am out messing around trying to pick up WFOR now, barely get a signal.
I am going to order a DAT75, and try again.
Try the FOX stations you are having trouble with at night, see if it helps
George33027 12-28-02, 04:17 PM At what times do you get 20-1 ?
Was it at night only?
I haven't been able to receive WSVN for the past week or so either (not that I am missing much.) I have tried rescanning for it on my HD-100 and have had no luck. Are they not broadcasting now? Hope it is an upgrade to 480p (yeah right).
I tried watching the opera on PBS on Sat. night but the sound seemed to be in mono. Ever since they started broadcasting on 2-2 during HD programs it seems like there have been audio problems.
dharding 12-30-02, 12:57 PM I have the same problem with my samsung SIR-T150, SIR-T165. The problem is they are not sending a mapping signal right now. My Panasonic TUDST-51 receives them perfectly with the channel mapping turned off on channel 8. All other receivers require the mapping signal to work. I think it is called PSIP.
jluzbet 12-30-02, 01:36 PM Why do you guys bother with WSVN ???
Dont you pick up WFLX ...
dharding 12-30-02, 02:06 PM Yes I do watch WFLX -29 for all FOX programming. However I do like WSVN news the best. I do think it is funny that my Samsung boxes have automaticly removed WSVN from my available channels. It would be nice if WSVN joined the rest and at least passed the 480p widescreen programs from FOX but as long as I can receive WFLX I am happy. :D
7-1 is now on the air here via E86. They have apparently been on lower power -- 70-80 vs previous 100 -- for a few weeks.
I get WFLX (28 = 29-1) at almost the same signal level, but with occasional breaks. They do the FOX ("equal to HDTV") wide screen.
Kwikdraw 12-30-02, 02:47 PM My samsung 165 is also having a little trouble getting WSVN. When I go to the channel (8-1) it takes about 4 seconds to lock on to the signal. This has been going on for the past week.
Question: Why does WSVN look the way it does? I thought they were broadcasting in 480p?
Kwikdraw 12-30-02, 02:49 PM Sorry duplicate post
WBFS/UPN
The programming director apologizes for "North Dallas Forty" not being in HD last Saturday...they will have the problem corrected in time for the next Paramount HDOne movie broadcast.
WSVN/FOX
They only do 480i (and badly, at that!). No current plans for upgrading to 480p. They haven't been transmitting PSIP for a while now, making it almost impossible for the Samsung STBs in particular to lock on to their signal.
I'm getting no picture or sound, yet the channel remapping is working again and the signal strength is very high. So don't bother adjusting your receivers.

I could not get HD content on any of the 18's or the remapped 2's. Only thing I could receive (tested at various times for a few days) was 2-2 and 18-2 SD multicast. I started messing around in the Mitts STB setup, and after clearing the zip codes/rescanning locals, 2-1 came back to life with HD !!! Problem was all of my DirectTV sat stations were removed from the program guide. After resetting the power, and adding the zip code I got DirectTv channels back in guide, but 2-1 had header information, no picture....tried 18-1, and was able to see HD again. When I researched for my HD STB purchase, I remember reading something in the HD hardware section about a mapping problem with some locals and the Advanced Program Guide of the mitsu STB, but for the first 8 months never noticed the problem...but now I guess I need to look into it more, maybe the STB is also preventing me from getting WFLX in WPB, I can't ever seem to get a signal from 28-1 or 29-1, and just assumed my antenna could not pick it up.

WFLX-DT is on the air only in the evening on weekdays. I am not certain of the weekend schedule except that they have been carrying FOX NFL games on Sundays.
I obtained it via manual remote entry; and have a signal usually in the 70s with a beginning RS antenna at 25 feet. It helps that the transmitter is in line from my location to the Hallandale transmitters.

Around 40-60 if it drops to 34 I loose the lock.

Was able to lock on to Fox for a while this afternoon around 5ish. Finally got a picture. I feel like it's a problem with their signal format. I couldn't get WBDZL. 39-1 Great signal, just no picture.

Anytime but now. I've lost 20-1, all I get is 28 on signal. I need about 35 to get a picture. I don't know, maybe it was a trop thing.

George33027 01-03-03, 10:21 AM I think your building is acting like a ground plane, and in effect, your antenna is almost a super fringe antenna.
This is great for you.
Everytime I try to tune my antenna, the signal is nil.
I have to go up there at night, it seems that is the best time to rotate the antenna.
aviators99 01-08-03, 09:55 AM Did anyone notice poor sound quality on NYPD Blue last night on WPLG-DT? It seemed to be back to what sounded like possibly mono again. It's possible that it was stereo, but there was certainly no rear channel action, as opposed to when I switched over to analog. I can't receive the Palm Beach ABC digital affiliate, so I was unable to compare. If this is a local problem, I hope it can be fixed by the Super Bowl!

Hmm, interesting, I of course don't know what the %#$@ your talking about but maybe if I tell you exactly what I'm doing to get the signal you can figure out what the heck is happening.
If I take the silver sensor unamplified antenna and point it at the antenna in Fort Myers I get nothing. If I then tilt the front of the antenna up about 35 - 45 degrees I get about 20-25 signal strength. Then if I hold the antenna near the roof of my balcony it goes up to 35-45. I dont' understand why the distance of 2 feet can mean a higher signal when I'm on the 10th floor so something must be happening with the structure of the floors and ceilings.

Yes, based on NYPD last night, it appears that WPLG-DT audio has regressed to where it was before they fixed it a month or so ago. It was the first ABC HD that I have watched for a while, so I cannot comment based on others.
The change in volume problem has also returned. The local cut-ins almost blew me out of the room before I could mute them.
Perhaps friend Rudy can once again prevail upon them to fix it.

Recently -- as of one minute ago -- I have been receiving the digital programming on 18-1 with no remap. Try to get it manually via the remote. They have been changing it from time to time.
According to the WBFS Program Director, they will not have Crocodile Dundee in HD on 1/12. They should have things working for Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

His name is Darren Alline. Ask for him specifically when you call 305-576-1010; the engineering assistant is very sweet but she doesn't really know much about the technical issues on the digital channel.

Try clearing your zip codes from your STB. I have been on the phone with Hughes Tech Support for my e86 and through trial and error found out that when using zip codes in the STB, DirecTV is dictating what your receiver can and can't receive via their outdated database of zip codes. I was on the phone with Channel 2's enginneers this week and yesterday shared with them my findings about the outdated DirecTV database. They said they thought it was a Hughes problem, not a DirecTV issue, but after I told them I could watch channel 2 in HDTV when zip codes were cleared, they said they would call DirecTV to have them correct the problem. 24 hours later, i am able to watch 2-1 without having to wipe out my zip codes!!

It's pronounced "All-EEN".
David McRoy 01-10-03, 10:34 AM Darrin used to work with me here at WPEC. It's [AL-LEEN] ... "Al" as opposed to "All"...and with equal emphasis on each sylable (as with most French names).

Mike_in_FL 01-10-03, 11:44 AM Can anybody give any recommendations on antennas? One website I came across was pushing the TERK TV55. I do like the idea of being able to mount something that will be relatively inconspicuous, but I am wondering if it will be adequate where I live.
Thanks!

robert1251 01-10-03, 12:05 PM You might try the indoor Silver Sensor (available at Circuit City for about $39.00). I am in West Boca and am pulling in both Miami and West Palm Beach UHF signals (and WPEC, which is VHF).
aviators99 01-10-03, 02:35 PM Hi all,
I spoke with Darrin over at WPLG. He *did not* know about the audio problem until I called. He then confirmed the problem with his equipment. Somehow the signal is coming to him as though it were 5.1, but only two channels are actually encoded. He has been on the phone today to try to get this resolved, but he has not had any luck so far. He doesn't know when it will be fixed, and couldn't promise it would be fixed in time for the Super Bowl. On the other hand, he's not sure that the Super Bowl will be encoded in 5.1 anyway. I asked him to let me know if he finds that out one way or another. If it will be, and their audio is not fixed, I might have to get a bigger antenna for the Super Bowl, so that I can get the Palm Beach station...

hdtvis4me 01-10-03, 02:45 PM Mike, I use the Radio Shack 15-1862 in the West Palm area and am able to catch all the Palm Beach DTV stations (12-1, 12-2, 25-1, 29-1, 34-1) as well as the following Broward/Dade Channels: 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 4-1, 33(32-2), 39-1, and a few Spanish DTV channels). I have tried both outdoor and indoor antennas and this one by far catches the most. Since they stopped making them, they are hard to get a hold of, but I did see one on ebay today. Hope that helps.
hdtvis4me 01-10-03, 02:49 PM Mike - I forgot to say - I bought the Terk TV55 and returned it very quickly after having it professionally mounted outside. I was only able to get a couple of channels. It is the worst antenna that I have tried.

Anyone having difficulty mapping WBFS and WTVX today? I cleared out my Local Areas and set new zip codes for Mia & WPB on my DST3000 STB. 32-1 maps to 4-1 and 50-1 maps to 5-1. Its rather strange since it used to map correctly to 33-1 and 34-1 respectively. PBS hasn't mapped right for several days also. I've reset my receiver several times with the same results and just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this? Thanks for any replies.

David McRoy 01-17-03, 11:09 AM 50-1 remaps to 5-1?
Boy, they'd better fix that before WPTV-DT signs-on on channel 55 next month...it is supposed to remap to 5-1!
hdtvis4me 01-17-03, 11:18 AM I have talked to Hughes (I use an e-86) tech support about a mapping issue with 18-1 and 2-1 and also the engineers at Channel 2 in Miami and what we found out was that the zip code you put in your receiver gives DirecTV (if you use DirecTV) control over the remapping and also tells your receiver what it can or can't receive. For example, if I put in a Boca zip code, my receiver can not receive channels 18-1 or 2-1 even though the signal comes in at 90%. When I remove the zipcode, both channels come in just fine. Hughes told me that I had to find a zip code that was on the outdated/inaccurate DirecTV channel list that listed Channel 2 as 18-1 and 2-1. I tried about 3 Broward zip codes before finding one that worked. What is strange is that a couple days ago, even with the Broward zip code in, I had to press 18-1 to get channel 2. I have not checked today though. If what the Hughes tech is true (which it seems true from my testing) - that is crap. Why would DirecTV's zip code database interfere with OTA channels that I can lock on to?
I believe that the WPBT mapping problem emanates from the station.
I have a solid Miami-Dade zip code, but from day to day, sometimes receive WPBT variously only on 2-1, 2-2 or 18-1. Sometimes, it is on some combination of 2-1, 2-2, 2-3 and 18-1 at the same time -- sometimes on all four at once.
Wednesday evening, all DT channels were dark and silent for at least an hour, although the signal was at 100.
Others have reported similar reception patterns in this forum.
hdtvis4me 01-17-03, 11:59 AM try clearing your zip codes from your receiver and watch those problems go away :) Just weird...
I think the mapping errors my receiver (DST3000) displayed this morning could be due to a new function key that now resides in my DST3000. Under the scan locals key is a new key "LiL" which is for Directv locals into locals. I don't know if is downloading info yet, it just appeared today and may be why some of us with E86 clones are having trouble mapping correctly.

I am finding it more and more difficult to get the HD content from the PBS channel. I fought with it for a week or so, had it back for a while, and now it is gone again (last 5 or 6 days). I have tried no zip code and a few different Miami zip codes...no pbs hdtv....what broward zip code are you using to get the channel? I have a mitsu hd-5... a clone of a hughes, so maybe your zip code will help me.
Thanks,

hdtvis4me 01-17-03, 11:49 PM The 2 zip codes I have are 33073 and 33412, respectively. Those 2 zip codes allow me to receive guide information from the Miami stations and the Palm Beach stations except for channel 12-1 & 12-2 (WPEC). I am assuming they are too new to be on DirecTV's list?? (Maybe Dave can look into that?). The most important point is that the allow me to receive Channel 2 on 18-1.
As far as using those 2 zip codes, you will need to do the following in order (this according to the Hughes tech):
1. Delete all zip codes from your receiver
2. Clear all local channels
3. on remote - press "SAT" "ACTION" "POWER" (this performs a 'soft boot')
4. Enter new zip code information
You should now be able to catch Channel 2 on 18-1. For some reason, this past week I have not been able to get to it via 2-1. Of course the program guide shows the information for 2-1, but 18-1 just shows "Regular Schedule". While this is a pain, at least I am still able to watch HDTV on Channel 2 via 18-1. This was tested tonight before 11pm when they went off air for the night and all did work on 18-1.
same finding here, i am using zip code 33073 & 33496, PBS some time come in 2-1, and 18-1, but 18-1 always work
snook789 01-18-03, 08:25 AM ditto, same thing here, been going through the same things as you guys, with my E86.
Now 2-1 (18-1) and 4-1, are showing Regular Schedule with no logos.
Tried soft booting a couple times, and clearing zip codes, same thing...
Then I just tried 33073, and that works, thanks guys!

snook789 01-21-03, 08:02 AM Yes I can, and its thanks to Davenlr & dynamohum1, here on the forum, that informed me about Tropospheric bending.

The picture on 20-1 is better than the analog on 17, but not nearly as sharp as non-HD material on other DT stations. The audio is louder from the front left speaker. The signal is pegged at 100.
I have audio but no video on 20-2.
My signal on 20 DT is 98% in SW Dade. The video on 20-1 is not very sharp, and the sound on 20-2 is totally out of sync. I am sure that today is their first day on the air. I hope they re-map to 17-1 ans 17-2 soon, as it kills the chances of getting the NBC from Ft. Myers on 15 DT, as they also re-map to 20-1 and -2. Usually when a station starts they re-map wrong, and then the engineering staff gets the hang of it. Anyway, good luck to WLRN-DT on their digital endeavors, and give us some more digital programs.

Sorry to disappoint, but if and when WLRN-DT remaps to 17-1, channel 20 will still be its "real" home; and will be where one can observe signal level. Just as 22 is home for WFOR and 09 is for WPLG, etc. If one tunes to 20-1, it will (should) automatically switch (remap) to 17-1.
With the notable exception of WPBT-DT, which has been acting crazy lately, I believe that all of the local channels perform in that manner.
The preceding is based on the unlikelihood that tuning to 15-1 would remap to Naples 20-1 in the presence of WLRN on 20. But only time will tell. Stranger things have happened.

My RCA DTC100, along with my Zenith IQB64W10W's built-in ATSC tuner only keep the remap channels once the signal is saved, but my Mitsubishi SR-HD5 saves every appellation. For example WLRN-DT is available as 17-1 or 17-2 as well as 20-1 and 20-2 in my channel lineup. If I delete 20-1 and 20-2 they still come back the next time I surf.
Has anyone been able to get what is going on on Ch. 46 DT. I get a fairly weak signal (50-60%) but steady, but my HD100 wont lock to it. It's been there on and off for the past two weeks. Could be Ch. 45 TBN testing their digital signal. Any one knows details?

Kwikdraw 01-24-03, 01:11 AM Can anyone explain to me why is ABC (4-1) and CBS (10-1) are broadcasting in 4:3 and not 16x9? I would assume that 99% of the people watching DT channels have widescreen monitors or TV's, so why not broadcast in widescreen. I could have swore CBS was broadcasting in widescreen up until recently.
Anyway, the problem I'm having is I have to watch these channels in stretch modes (to avoid burn in), which reduces the quality of the picture.
Kwik
David McRoy 01-24-03, 08:21 AM They are maintaining oroginal aspect ratio...4:3 for upconverted standard-definition shows with black side panels and 16:9 for high-definition shows.
If you run your set's contrast conservatively and don't watch MSNBC all day you probably won't experience uneven phosphor burn. My set is almost 3 years old and still fine.
Jose,
Channel 46 DT is channel 45 TBN. Its been off and on for about 2 months now. I did receive an SD picture about a month ago and picture quality was fair. The analog was sharper maybe they are still working the bugs out? The signal strength has been a constant 72 but with no picture lately.
Mark
Bill, I know that WLRN is on real Ch.20 DT, but if they re-map to Ch.17-1,2 then the Ft. Myers station, on Ch.15 DT, but re-mapping to Ch. 20.1,2, can be re-mapped by our receivers to 20-1,2.

Hi guys,
I've been having a problem with ABC WPLG (10-1). I get a great picture but the minute I turn on my receiver I lose the picture. If I turn the receiver back off the picture comes back. Now I can still get sound through my TV's speakers. I don't think that this is a hardware problem because this does not happen with WFOR (4-1), WPBT (2-1), WDZL (39-1) or HBO HD, Showtime HD or HDNet. I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing anything remotely similar?
BTW, I have a Panny STB so I can't tell if it's a signal strength issue. Also I have a Denon receiver and a Toshiba 57hx81.
Thanks,
Vlad
Also, I am using the Rat Shack Double Bowtie antenna. I don't know if it's an antenna issue but I'm thinking about going out and buying the Silver Sensor. This is very frustrating, especially considering the SuperBowl is today and I have friends coming over. I guess in a worse case scenario we can still watch the game without the DD 5.1 and listen through my TV's speakers. But I still want to solve this problem.
Very strange. See what happens on 7-1, the other VHF station. But it doesn't sound like an antenna or A/V receiver problem.
Pull the HD receiver plug for a few minutes. It cannot hurt and sometimes fixes various malfunctions.
wjbjr,
OK, I tried 7-1 and it is also happening. So I went out and bought a Jenson Amplified UHF/VFH antenna and it is still occurring on both 10-1 and 7-1. I still think it may be a signal strength issue because the signal LED on the Panny STB starts to flicker on and off, and sometimes goes off completely whenever I turn on my receiver. And once I turn my receiver off the LED comes back on and my picture is back. Very strange indeed.
At this point I'm fed up, and have resigned myself to watch the Super Bowl without DD 5.1, but it still pisses me off.
I also reset the HD STB, still no dice.
Anyway, thanks for your help. Any other ideas are still appreciated.
Vlad
Is anyone getting signal strength variations today on 10.1? My signal keeps moving from 100 to 75. I would like to know if I should make a trip to my roof before the game.
Thanks
Michael
aviators99 01-27-03, 12:47 AM Great job WPLG-DT! That was your shining day!
Vlad --
Is your HD video connected directly from the STB to the TV or is it routed via the A/V receiver? If the latter, change it to the former.
You might also try unplugging the STB overnight. That fixed something for me that standard reboots did not. While you are about it,you might as well also unplug the A/V receiver.
George33027 01-29-03, 06:33 PM Just so you know, it takes about 20 minutes to completly deplete the power supply, and to insure all the temp memory is erased.
That is why you are asked to turn off at least 10 - 30 mins. at a last resort.
Also, any updates to the guide happens at 2 AM.
Once turned on, the guide is then updated.

Okay, something has happend. I used to get 20-1 from Fort Myers now I tried it and I get WLRN. How did this happen? Did WLRN do something to start transmitting over the 20-1 signal. I really want NBC back.

drguava 01-31-03, 06:48 AM Tim,
NBC from FT Myers is at 15-2, that is where I have been getting on since WLRN went on the air.
DR Guava
George33027 01-31-03, 07:12 PM Is it still available all day or still just at night?
David McRoy 01-31-03, 08:23 PM Tim,
WLRN-DT transmits on channel 20, remapped to 17-1, 17-2, etc.
The NBC station in Ft. Myers analog is on channel 20 and their DTV is on 15-1, which remaps to 20-1.
You may find it necessary to tune the Ft. Myers station manually by entering its actual transmiission channel each time you tune: 15-1.
drguava 02-01-03, 03:54 PM George,
I only get NBC from Ft Myers 15-2 at night.

Once it warms up again, you will see it back again...
I have been monitoring both this thread and the WPB thread for weeks. I have finally convinced my folks to take the HDTV plunge and to install an antenna in their attic or perhaps - on their roof. Can anyone recommend a good installer - with knowledge of HD - who works in the Boca Raton area? I have spoken with several "home theater installers" and they are clueless about HD.
Thanks in advance.

steverino1 02-03-03, 08:23 AM Hi,
I live in South Beach and cannot currently receive ABC or NBC. Before I invest in a new antenna (I was thinking the silver sensor) I was wondering:
Does anyone in this area receive those channels?
Thanks for any help you can give.
David McRoy 02-03-03, 08:42 AM WTVJ-DT (NBC) is not yet on the air.
WPLG-DT (ABC) is on VHF channel 9. The Silver sensor is a UHF antenna. You would do better with a VHF/HUF antenna.

danny7981 02-04-03, 06:29 AM Quick question, what is the best receiver on the market today? IE: Integrated guide for ota and DirecTV, good ota reception (multipath problems)? David McRoy 02-04-03, 08:21 AM Danny,
Try asking on the HDTV Hardware Forum. But, as an aside, and something to keep in mind, a new generation of smart receiver/smart antenna combos will be on the market eventually (if you can wait a little while) that will dramatically simplify tuning, even from stations originating from multiple directions:

They filed for, and were granted, and extension.

I have the Sony HD-200 and love it...full integration, excellent APG (much better than my previous non-hd Sony DirecTV receiver) plenty of options, very easy to use, plenty of customization available, good stretch modes and upconversion, no problems, DVI output (although I use component for future recording and couldn't see spending $99 for DVI when good Monster component cables are $40). The receiver is $688 at BrandsMart while most other retailers sell it for $799.
George33027 02-06-03, 07:28 PM Okay, NBC Ch 55 is WPB WPTV which has been delayed by towers and government etc etc etc.

NBC Ch 31 is Hollywood WTVJ which is due around April.
Is this correct?
George,
I may be wrong, but I think the Miami NBC affiliate does not expect to go live before July. As for the West Palm Beach NBC station, I haven't seen anything in the media lately. Neither station has returned my most recent phone calls, so I'm not going to waste any more time on them. Except for "CSI" (the Vegas edition), I'm really not a big fan of network television. In fact, if it weren't for HD, I wouldn't watch network TV at all.

Big Daddy P 02-07-03, 08:14 AM Got an email from NBC 6 stating they would begin HDTV broadcasting in "early June"
Here's the actual Email:
I understand your frustration , but we are moving towards providing HDTV. The delay was due to location of the original channel assignment. WTVJ-HD Channel 31 new location has been approved by the FCC as of January 2003.
Since going on the air in 1967, channel 6 has always been difficult to pick-up over-the-air for most viewers because of it’s location near Homestead, 40 miles south of the Miami / Ft. Lauderdale center of television broadcasting. This is a result of FCC channel spacing requirements. WTVJ has delayed implementation of it’s digital HDTV broadcasting for over two years until arrangements could be worked out to move it’s assigned digital channel location from Homestead to midway between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. This will ensure viewers of perfect reception without the need for a separate antenna pointed in a different direction. WTVJ is installing new state-of-the-art transmitting equipment to provide a perfect picture to its viewers.
WTVJ-DT NBC 31 on a high definition is coming early June.

I just found out Fox is broadcasting the daytona 500 in widescreen 480 with dolby surround is there any chance that wsvn 7 in miami will be passing this along to us or are we going to have to go down there and burn there station down (of coarse we will be sure Jackie Johnson is not in there). If not how about the fox station in west palm and with an outdoor antenna in se broward what is the chances of picking it up.

Brook,
Absolutely no chance of WSVN passing this along. It is likely the west palm one will, and if you have an outdoor antenna in SE Broward, you almost definitely can pick it up. I pick it up pretty well from western Pembroke Pines with a small Radio Shack indoor antenna.
Unless they changed something halfway through the race, the WPB Fox affiliate didn't have the DD 5.1 feed. When I was watching, it was widescreen but only DD 2.0.
Did anyone try to watch Ferris Bueller's Day Off in HD on WBFS this past weekend? I tried tuning in on Sat @ 2pm but it wasn't playing. Didn't try on Sunday though.
I watched "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" on Saturday. I don't recall what time it came on, but it was in the afternoon and it definitely was in HD. Nice PQ, too. But only DD 2.0.
Just got of the phone with Butch Chief Engineer
WFLX Fox 29
He told me the Daytona 500 will be in 480p widescreen with dd5.1.
He also made a point that they do have a dd5.1 decoder hooked up and when FOX sends 5.1 to him he will be passing it along.:)
Can't wait to CRANK IT UP in 5.1
aviators99 02-12-03, 12:28 AM Nascar will not be in HD this year.
Hey guys need your help and have heard problems with some of you guys witht he dissapearence of channel 2-1 which is wpbt. Like 6 to 7 weeks ago i have lost channel 2-1 and 2-3 which show the wpbt hdtv channel loop. when i enter this channel nothing happens. I did get it back like 3 weeks ago but as of now i cant find it . not even on channel 17-1 do i get this. whats the problem i have a friend who has a zenith hdtv and he gets his channel 2 hdtv. i dont have a problem with this and any other channel though can you help and what do i do. i have even entered different zip codes on my local antenna to see if it was a guide problem!
oh i have a hughes hdtv satellite receiver the hird 86...
and yes i have full signal strength out of this channel . but no channel 2 hd
Same response as to your other post: 18-1.
no i dont get it on 18-1 either or 2-2 or 2-3 or whatever the case may be when i do a channel scan 2-1 2-2 2-3 all show up but no picture and on 18-1 or 17-1 i dont get anythinbg!
hdtvis4me 02-17-03, 09:02 AM Sounds like you need to reset your receiver. Clear all channels from your receiver. Then, remove all zip codes. Turn off receiver for a few minutes. Turn the receiver back on & before doing anything check channel 18-1. If you can see a picture during their broadcasting time then you can go ahead and input your zip code information (testing 18-1 reception each step of the way). You will want to make note of which step, if any, causes you to lose 18-1 to avoid that step in the future.
bertsot 02-17-03, 10:12 AM Hi everyone,
I'm new to all of this. I just installed my system this weekend and put up a RS outdoor antenna to recieve OTA. Everything was working fine but last night channel 10-1 started stuttering. I'm getting a signal strength of 100 but it drops down to the 60's. I'm using a Hughs E86. Could this be my antenna, equipment, or the station.
Thanks

Apparently it was the station Same situation here. It appears to have been fixed in the past two minutes. Maybe.
in the past i have cleared all zip codes and all channels to see if this would help and it didnt! so i wll try your steps and hopefully it works but when i do a channel scan 18-1 never comes out only 2-1 2-2 and 2-3 and 100 percent signal but no pic
hdtvis4me 02-17-03, 01:37 PM I would avoid doing a channel scan - that is where your problem is occuring. Hughes tech support claims only use channel scan if you do not have DirecTV service. That utility is there for people who are just using the e86 without satellite service and should not be touched otherwise. Keep in mind, a scan will not show 18-1 since 18-1 maps to 2-1 (that is normal).
bertsot 02-17-03, 03:14 PM Eddy13,
I'm having the exact problem. Could you please let me know if this worked. I too did the scan and get 100% on 2-1, 2-2 and 2-3 but get no picture.
bertsot 02-17-03, 03:16 PM wjbjr,
Is this normal? Does this happen often.

It happens occasionally, not too often. Don't panic when it is only one station, as the problem is almost always at the station.

jmck0915 02-21-03, 08:17 AM Eddy/Bert,
I have two mitsu hd-5's (a clone of the hughes?), and experience the exact symptoms (received WPBT HD for six or seven months fine, then stopped about 2 months ago).....tried everything, soft reset, power down/hard reboot, scan/no scan, remove zip codes...etc... and could not get reception of the WPBT HD, I receive the SD broadcast on 2-2/18-2 fine but no HD. The only way I am able to get the HD broadcast is to clear out the zip codes, clear out the locals. Disconnect the Sat in cable, then do a soft reboot (Sat/Action/Pwr), or just pull the power cord for a minute or so. When the receiver powers back on it tries to load the program guide, fails since it has no DirectTv signal, and I have no channels in the guide. Next I go to the local setup area, and select each of the locals true numbers, e.g. 22 for CBS, 9 for ABC, 18 for WPBT....etc... When I do this all the mapped channels show up selected in the local area setup. Channel 2-1 is the HD PBS feed. I could watch all the locals like
this forever...but you don't get the DTV channels. When I connect the Sat signal, after the program guide gets loaded, channel 2-1 just shows a blank screen....I have been watching the channel, and have it go black while I was watching it!! Channel 18-1 does hold the HD feed. I then add the zip code, so I can see local proram information in the guide. One of my mitsu's has kept receiving HD PBS on 18-1 for two weeks, but the second one lost it after about 7 or 8 days.....not sure if it is a design flaw in the STB, a local station problem, or a misprint in the Direct TV channel maps for Miami locals.....anyway it is a real pain.
OH Yeah....make sure you try this when the PBS HDTV feed is broadcasting, or the receiver won't tune in the mapped channels.
John

David McRoy 02-24-03, 08:11 AM I would disagree. The dialog should not have been present across all three front channels.
hdtvis4me 02-24-03, 08:38 AM i second that - quite annoying.
Just received this email message from them:

I thought that was intentional. Oh well. Music sounded great, though.
romy101 02-24-03, 11:45 PM I also got an email from WHDT
If WHDT wins its battle with EchoStar, it will be carried on both satellite providers in HD. FCC is now reviewing complaint.
aviators99 02-25-03, 12:31 AM But even if the FCC decides that WHDT is "must carry", I didn't think that it would be required to be carried in HD, necessarily. Who's to say E* or D* couldn't just downconvert it for carriage?
David McRoy 02-25-03, 08:11 AM The FCC already rejected WHDT's petition, but their going to appeal the decision in court.
David McRoy 02-26-03, 09:48 AM Re: Dolby Digital 5.1 on WFOR-DT during the Grammys, I have learned that CBS did, indeed send the show with dialog intentionally mixed onto all three front channels. I find this rather unorthodox and somewhat annoying to listen to but the decision to do so was made by the mixing engineers in New York. WFOR-DT just passed it along intact.
I have not received the WLRN-DT signal on Ch.17-1 and 2 lately. When I check signal level, I get no signal on DT Ch.20, which is their on-air DT channel. Is anyone one else experiencing this or is it my problem. Before I was getting a better than 90% signal on my HD100.

17-1-2 and 20-1-2 are on the air now. Signal at 100. WLRN might not be on the air 24 hours a day.
For those in South Beach... I have been researching for a while and bought a Sony KP46WT500 a couple of weeks ago together with an open box Samsung SIR-T151... anyways, I found the Zenith HDV420 deal from Brandsmart for about $165 and returned the open box. In addition, the Samsung did have the high pitch sound and reception with the Zenith seems to be slightly better.
As far as reception, I went through various small indoor RadioShack antennas, the Silver Sensor, Radio Shack double bow tie, Terk TV55 and I ended up sticking with a RadioShack 15-2180, mounted in my balcony, directed towards the antennas on the county lines. My balcony faces east so reception isnt perfect (various buildings along the way) and deviates from "Normal" to "Good". I catch all the channels that I want though and I am eagerly waiting for NBC. I have a small 10dB signal amplifier and might invest in a low noise 30dB to improve my ABC reception which sometimes pixelates.
I can now receive 2-1, 4-1, 10-1, 17-1, 29-1, 39-1 and 69-1. Is there anything that I am missing and should manually enter?
Thanks for the help. This forum has been of great help.
Welcome aboard.
You should also be able to receive:
7-1 (8) WSVN (FOX) No HD, but useful during rain fade periods.
23-1 (22) Univision
33-1 (32) UPN
51-1 (52) Telemundo
Are the NCAA games on CBS (4-1) supposed to be in HD today?
bertsot 03-31-03, 09:23 AM A bit off topic, but....
I've noticed that on WSVN-DT (Channel 7-1) it seems as thought the feed is SD.
On my Toshiba 16:9 tv I have the picture set to TW1. All of the programming, including the commericals, come in as 16:9 (due to the streach mode) in either the SD or HD feed from my E86. If I change this to channel 29-1 - the WPB Fox feed - it comes in as HD (ED), where shows like Oliver Beene come in at 16:9 and the commericals come in at 4:3. Is WSVN not transmitting EDTV?
Thanks

No they are not transmitting 480p, they are not doing anything worth seeying, thanks for wflx at least we can see what Fox does from them.. Take 7-1 out off your receiver.. it Sucks
WSVN transmits all programming in SD (480i with a 4:3 aspect ratio); WFLX upconverts all of their programming to HD (1080i), but except for the FOX network 480p ED widescreen broadcasts it's all 4:3 material inside of a 16:9 frame.
FWIW, WSVN is apparently the only local station broadcasting some form of programming info in the PSIP. I haven't seen any actual descriptions of programs so far, but the times and names of the shows are listed.
Does 39-1 WBZL flicker for anyone? I notice the flick on WBZL and no other channel.
George33027 04-06-03, 09:20 AM "flicker" ? is that pixelation?
Once noise or multipath disrupts a digital signal, only the "good data" is presented, which is why only "pieces" of a picture seem to be updated.
Does any one have probrem receiving WPBT, i get the channel 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, but no picture or sound at all. try manually add in 18-1. 18-2 won't work (which work before) I have 100 signal on ch. 18 digital.
Chan,
All three PBS stations come in great in Miami, with only occasional outages. Two are from other markets.
hmcbean 04-08-03, 02:11 AM Chan, I live in Coconut Creek/Pompano Beach area and I am having the same problems with WPBT as you are. I have 2-1,2-2 & 2-3, but none of them have a picture. I am receiving signal strength of 100, but I have not had a picture for months. Does anyone know whats going on? I checked their website, but it says nothing about them having technical difficulties.
Thanks,
Howard,
Hmcbean,
do you have a Hughes E86 or its clone? I fix the problem, i get it to work on 18-1, but still nothing on 2-1, 2-2, 2-3. It has to be something to do with Directv guide and the E86 comparability and WPBT signal.
The way to fix it is to clear all the custom channel in the local area, clear the zip code, disconnect the SAT IN cable then disconnect the power then turn it back on.
When the Receiver try to reload the guide, it actually can't because no SAT singnal yet. Go to the local area custom channel and add 18-1 manually and it will remap to 2-1, 2-2, 2-3 etc.. and keep the 18-1, 18-2.
Now go to test the channel 2-1, 2-2 etc.. it work, then you put the SAT Cable back in, it still work (still did not put in zip code info yet) but some Digital channel can't come in like 12-1, 12-2, or 29-1.
Once the zipcode is entered i can get all the digital channel except 2-1, 2-2, 2-3 will have no picture and sound but 18-1 remain there and work. It is just a pain to fix it.
P.S. Do not use the Scan feature.
2-1, 2-2 and 2-3 have been black for months. 18-1 has been live for all of that time. As best I can recall, it was tuned manually. Be certain that it is on the air. Afternoon and evening.

George, you can answer your question by searching for distributors at the Channelmaster and Winegard web sites.
Hint: For CM, go to Products and Find a Distributor. For W, use the map.

Some people do receive 2-1,2,3. I used to. Those three and 18-1,2 appear on the local channel list and display headers, but only 18-1 has programming. Fortunately, that's all I need.
It might be a matter of re-mapping differences with different receivers. I have an E86. You?
I get my signal OTA decoded by my Mits 65911 tv. I also get cable from comcast, but of course no HDTV. Probably will get a dish soon.
hmcbean 04-12-03, 01:55 AM It seems like most of the people having problems with 2-1,2-2, 2-3, 18-1 & 18-2 are in North Broward or Boca and are using a Mitsubishi HD box or the Hughes e86 box. I live in Coconut Creek, Pompano Beach and have not been able to receive these channels for the past few months.
Is anyone in the North Broward or South Palm Beach area able to receive these channels and is using a Mits HD or Hughes e86 box?

greenlif 04-13-03, 09:22 AM Ron Garrison with TV solutions (a liaison for Huges & Direct TV) left me a message on 4/4/03. He stated that Direct TV has a software glitch with the way they are sending the program schedule for 2-1,2-2 or 18-1,18-2 which in turn is not allowing the Huges & Mits to receive the programming correctly.
Ron said they are testing a software fix and it should be implemented soon.
Westonhdguy 04-14-03, 12:17 PM Just received an e-mail response from Peter Roghaar at WPTV, and he says that his chief engineer told him this morning that hdtv will begin April 16 or 17th. Finally, NBC in HD in South Florida!
hdtvis4me 04-14-03, 12:59 PM Finally!!! I was wondering if it was going to happen this week. I noticed that over the weekend they were doing some transmission work. Well - thanks for the news - hope it happens!
George33027 04-14-03, 01:02 PM Wow, that is Ch 55 right?
Do we know if they will be close to high power or full power?
Westonhdguy 04-14-03, 02:09 PM Yes, it's channel 55 which remapps to, I assume, 5-1. I didn't ask about their power. I e-mailed the same guy (the news director) Dr. Guava did originally, so try again and let us know if he will be full power. This morning, it took him all of 8 minutes to respond to my e-mail, so good luck. I'd e-mail him and ask him for your myself, but I figure it's always good to have hd inquiries come from multiple people - it gives the impression of a larger hd viewer base. Let us know!
George33027 04-14-03, 07:12 PM What is his email address again?
TimHuey 04-15-03, 12:48 AM Well I tried pulling in NBC between 1215am and 1245 during the Conan Obrien show and couldn't get anything with my set top mounted super antenna ( I can't remember it's name).
I'm not sure my settop box will allow me to do what I'm trying anyway. I"m not sure I can manually try and tune in a station with out it being scanned in first. I tried typing in 55 and hitting enter but I couldnt' get a picture.

(Corner of Las Olas at the beach)
George33027 04-15-03, 09:16 AM The message read that they should "Start" 4/16 or 17 which is tommorow or Thusdday.
I too tried and still at zero.
If you go to installation and set up ch 55, you should first see some signal strength activity.
TimHuey 04-15-03, 10:01 AM Whoops I should have mentioned I had a RCA-DTC 100. I don't think you can manually add a channel or access a channel unless it's been scanned in by the channel scan feature.
Tim Huey
TimHuey 04-15-03, 12:03 PM I'm getting nothing on 55 or 5-1. I have remapping turned off.
Tim Huey
hdtvis4me 04-15-03, 12:16 PM Tim - WPTV is not broadcasting yet. You will not get anything until they start. It will be tomorrow at the earliest.
Westonhdguy 04-15-03, 01:02 PM Here's the message cut and pasted to me yesterday, 8 minutes after I shot an e-mail to him asking whether they'd go up today (the 15th) as planned:
Our chief engineer told me this morning it will be April 16 or 17th.

TimHuey 04-15-03, 01:12 PM Okay, thanx hdtvis4me.
I just tried a rescan again and didn't get anything. I don't know what you guys are talking about "getting a signal." I understand I wont get a picture but are you saying I should be getting a signal at least with no picture cause my reception meter is showing nothing right now. As a matter of fact 55 appears to be an analog station.
Just to make sure I'm doing this correctly, does anyone know on an RCA DTC 100 with channel remapping turned off, what channel NBC will show up on?
I just want to make sure I'm monitoring the correct channel frequency.
Tim Huey
hdtvis4me 04-15-03, 01:15 PM TIm - they will be on channel 55-1. At this moment, they are not broadcasting. You will not get a picture AND you will not get a signal from them at all. I suggest going out for a bite to eat and some shopping :). Tomorrow will be a new day to test - (sure can't wait until NBC in HD is here)!!
jluzbet 04-15-03, 04:04 PM I sure hope they will be at full power so I can pick it up ;)
aviators99 04-15-03, 05:07 PM I just called Peter Roghaar, and he said probably Friday.
TimHuey 04-15-03, 06:45 PM Well DANG! There goes Friends, Will and Grace, Scrubs and Good Morning Miami. I guess I'll call it Must not gonna see TV.

Repeats, anyway.
Edit: I take that back...was looking at the wrong week.
Your not going to miss much anyway since most of these shows aren't available in HD from the newtork.
TimHuey 04-15-03, 11:16 PM Yeah but the digital upconverts are better than the cable picture I get.

HD_JUNKIE 04-16-03, 12:05 AM Do all of you Fort Lauderdale people think you're going to get NBC 5 out of Palm Beach with an off air antenna? You better feel lucky! I find Channel 5 analog signal to be pretty crap south of Pompano.
NBC6 should be HD by June. I say should because they've asked for FCC extensions before. Though, they do have an HD page on their website.......
TimHuey 04-16-03, 12:28 AM HD JUNKIE,
I was able to get NBC Fort Myers last December using a silver sensor and I can get all of the WPB digital stations now with it. I don't see why I shouldn't be able to get NBC when it comes online. I will let you know how I fair.

Miami's WTVJ has agreed to accept some degree of interference from the other digital stations broadcasting from the same location. It will be interesting to see what this means in terms of reception of their digital signal. FWIW, my Samsung SIR-T165 is able to tune both the Miami and the Palm Beach NBC affiliates analog signals using an amplified indoor antenna, but the quality is pretty bad on both.
George33027 04-16-03, 03:47 PM As soon as someone get any kind of signa on Ch 55 Post it
Remember that both the Miami and WPB NBC analog stations are VHF. The DT versions for both will be UHF.
I now receive WPB 29-1 (UHF) in the 70s and WPB 12-1 (VHF) in the teens. I understand that the towers are close together. We will see whether this portends good reception of WPB NBC-DT
TimHuey 04-16-03, 10:57 PM Still no signal on 55-1. How in the world are they testing this thing? I hope they don't expect to turn on the switch and think everything will be great!

Tim, I dont want to Flame you but are you actually reading the posts ?? They will not start to test until Friday... Take it easy it will come:confused:
George33027 04-16-03, 11:51 PM And testing is testing. It may not be any programming. It may be a loop.
It may be so low power, that only a few miles will get it.
They state they want to test wed or thur. Then they say it should be Fri.
This is their hopes, not a commitment.
Just like CBS, we just have to wait til we see something.
Let us hope something is up this weekend.
TimHuey 04-17-03, 01:45 AM The first post said this and didn't mention testing:
"Just received an e-mail response from Peter Roghaar at WPTV, and he says that his chief engineer told him this morning that hdtv will begin April 16 or 17th. Finally, NBC in HD in South Florida!"
No post after that has mentioned testing. I know they have to test first that is why I said that. When does the testing begin.?
Mr. Jluzbet, take your foot out of your mouth and read the post. The internet if full of snooty idiots. Why don't you take your superior attitude and lack of personal skills out of this forum and try to be nice when you visit here.

Mean people suc
I just spoke to Dave (WPTV's chief engineer), and he says he expects to begin testing by the end of this week.
nagaska 04-17-03, 10:36 AM Just spoke with someone at WPTV - NO HDTV expected today, they're "having some problems".
She said, "we know we have to get it up by the end of the month, but i cant tell you any definite time"
Sounds like they're ready with everything and as soon as whatever glitch they've encountered gets fixed, it's up.
ugh.
Westonhdguy 04-17-03, 05:22 PM AND ITS A STRONG SIGNAL IN WESTON, 55-1. YAAAAY!!!!!
hmcbean 04-17-03, 05:41 PM No signal in Coconut Creek, Pompano Beach. Not even a beep.
Howard
Westonhdguy 04-17-03, 05:48 PM dON'T KNOW WHY YOU'RE NOT GETTING ANYTHING. i'M LOOKING AT CHANNEL 5 NEWS RIGHT NOW ON 55-1. iT'S STRETCHED AND WITH SOUND DROP OUT, BUT THEY'VE BEEN UP ALL OF 20 MINUTES SO i'M HARDLY COMPLAINING!

Mark, which HD box are you using? I have a Mitsubishi, Hughes e86

Westonhdguy 04-17-03, 07:04 PM zenith hd 520. See my post on the west palm beach thread for exactly what I did. Some bonehead said I was pulling everyone's leg, and set me off. Anyway, I'm going out to dinner with the wife now. Hopefully they'll get the sound working. I'll check back on the thread tonight - hopefully Leno and sound - we'll see. bye.
BarretoA 04-17-03, 07:10 PM I'm getting a stretched picture but no audio on 55.1. No remapping. Signal is about 65% on a Sony 34XBR2. I do get about a 75% signal on Fox 29 usually. Quality looks to be equivalent to analog, but then again it is the show "Extra" which I'm sure isn't done on Hi-Def. At least it's a start!
Mark W.
Watch who you call a Bonehead... We see all the threads.

OK I'll give it to you. I,m scanning with my Sony HD200 and when the channel is no channel on digital I get a quick "Not found" When I do it on 55 it hangs on 55 for a few seconds then it says "Not found" Maybe they are missing the info to map it. So my Sony rejects it .
Lets hope they resolve this before the weekend.
