George33027 07-27-03, 03:04 PM Has anyone been having problems receiving Sat C ch 99 ?
I hear there are problems, and I only get zero.
Just want to know if others are getting something?
Currently receiving test channel 99 from transponder C-8 at 97 on the meter.
George33027 07-28-03, 02:01 AM Thanks Bill.
That helps.
I think I am down to a way off alignment, LNB, cable to LNB, combiner of the Sat B / Sat C, or even the STB itself (which I do not think so)
I get Sat B at 90, Sat A at 90, zero for SAt C. With these levels I should get something from Sat C/8.
Petteri 07-30-03, 06:55 PM Bill, thanks for your input and advise here! One question, how is WTVJ getting its signal to Charter cable? Via fiber optic cable or is Charter getting it OTA? Thanks for the info!
David McRoy 07-31-03, 08:28 AM For quite some time now Brian Norcross's mic on WFOR has been very distorted. Oddly, it sounds worse on their DTV channel than it does on the analog channel.
David McRoy 08-01-03, 08:45 AM Check that: the whole show sounds distorted, especially the live studio mics, most especially Brian's.
George33027 08-01-03, 11:59 AM By the way, I fixed the Sat C problem. I had a bad combiner/filter. Now I get Sat C solid in the 90's.
Now to try to get the new HD channels without adding in the total choice package.
When did D* change their policy?
jjmcgraw 08-01-03, 11:42 PM I will try one more time and then give up...
Is anyone out here receiving WTVJ and getting programming info on the banner instead of "Regular Schedule", is this not setup yet from WTVJ or is it just me? Should I be a little more patient? I'm sure glad to be receiving it and picture is great... just wish it would provide info (as well as logo when saved as a favorite channel on my D* receiver).
Thanks guys.
John
I am watching NBC-6 DT right now, and on my SIR-T165 I don't get any programming info either, so it's not just you. Apparently, the programming info is not available in the channel banner either over the air or via satellite for this station. WSVN 7 DT, however, does have programming info available in the channel banner and in the PSIP-generated guide. Too bad the other locals aren't doing the same. It would make our DTV experience complete. ;)
George33027 08-02-03, 09:51 AM I find the same NO guide on both NBC (6-1 and 5-1)
Don't think NBC stations know how to put the guide out, like CBS and ABC and WB and FOX and UPN etc.
jjmcgraw 08-02-03, 12:40 PM Thanks guys. Just wanted to make sure it was the station and not me.
Take care.

Any ideas on how to get WFLX-DT in NW Coral Gables? I am sick of WSVN and 480i but I can't seem to get the WPB Fox station. I am using the biggest Radio Shack antenna model which is mounted on my roof. I get high 90's for signal strength for the Miami UHF stations on my SAT-HD100. Should I try an antenna amplifier? If so which model has worked for people? Thanks in advance.
Will
Will--
I am a few miles south of you and receive WFLX in the 70s and 80s via the smallest RS VHF/UHF antenna, sans amplifier, at about 25 feet. It is aimed at the Miami transmitters, all of which come in at constant solid 100s.
I conclude that from my location (Sunset and Maynada area), WFLX is in line with the Miami transmitters.
You are perhaps not as much in line as I, but with that antenna you should be able to receive some kind of WFLX signal. Are you certain that failure to do so is not a receiver tuning problem? Perhaps someone more familiar than I with your receiver could help.
Will,
An amplifier might just create signal overload problems for you, considering how close you are to the Miami stations. Perhaps a separate UHF antenna, aimed at Palm Beach, with an A/B switch? A bit cumbersome, but it might work.
Rudy
BarretoA 08-04-03, 10:25 AM Will, you may also want to try adjusting the antenna by pointing it due north instead of the NNE direction where the Miami transmitters are relative to Coral Gables. I don't think it should effect your reception of the Miami stations at all.
Thanks for the suggestions. Any ideas on when WSVN will go to 720p/1080i? I am guessing not anytime soon.
I do have two antennas mounted so Rudy's A/B suggestion might work for me in the meantime. Should I use a notch filter or amplifier or anything else to try to lock in the signal? I am not getting any kind of a signal at all right now.
Will,
Perhaps one of the Channel Master preamps would work...with one you'll probably be able to pick up all of the Palm Beach UHF stations.
As for WSVN, I wouldn't hold my breath for 720p/1080i broadcasts....they told me they can't even afford to do 480p at present.
Rudy
George33027 08-04-03, 01:52 PM Is cable going to put a the normal digital signals on cable or are they planning on using a priority digital signal?
George,
I don't know which cable company you have in your area, but when Comcast gets around to carrying the local digital signals they will be in QAM format. They won't pass through 8VSB.
Rudy
George33027 08-04-03, 07:42 PM Is that the Echo star format?
8VSB is what is sent OTA....the cable companies that are broadcasting HD use QAM instead so they can pack more (compressed) channels into the same bandwidth. From what I gather, the satellite companies use entirely different compression/broadcast schemes.
bertsot 08-05-03, 01:40 PM Wasn't last nights MNF game supposed to be in HD? WPLG 10-1 was broadcasting in 4:3 non HD. WHY?
ElectricPickle 08-05-03, 01:43 PM WPBF had MNF in HD after about 10 minutes. It was a great picture. I'm ready for some football!!!!:D
David McRoy 08-05-03, 02:15 PM Over-the-air DTV in the United States transports MPEG-2-encoded SD and HD streams under ATSC A/53 via 8VSB (Octagonal Vestigial Side-band.)
MPEG-2 codes are sent via QPSK (Quadrature Phase-Shift Keying) on DirecTV and Echostar/Dish Network (and eventually via the more efficient 8PSK (Octagonal Phase-Shift Keying) on Dish, reportedly.)
QPSK and 8PSK are less robust but more spectrum efficient than 8VSB. DBS satellite services can get away with this since there's almost no terrestrial interference to DBS signals and the signal is always line-of-sight...not so with digital terrestrial television (DTT) also known as over-the-air DTV.
Digital cable TV uses various flavors of QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) transport to carry MPEG-2 coding...64 QAM, 256 QAM, etc. The carefully controlled "wired" environment of cable TV allows for these even more-efficient/yet less robust transport schemes.
Some digital cable systems in some U. S. markets are carrying HDTV channels as ATSC via 8VSB so that early adopter HDTV users can decode the signal with an ATSC receiver instead of having to rely on a special QAM receiver.
Expect all cable systems to eventually send some kind of QAM only, to be decoded with QAM STBs...since it's more spectrum efficient and better suited to the cable environment than 8VSB.
With the introduction of the $70 Pace Electronics QAM-to-NTSC converter (Digital Cable Adapter, or DCA) we may also expect analog NTSC to disappear from all cable systems one day. The spectrum required for 80 analog TV channels on cable could be used instead for 150 to 230 HDTV channels via 256 QAM. SD channels could be sent via QAM instead of spectrum-hog analog and converted to NTSC for older sets by the Pace converter box.
The Pace DCA converter box is a huge boon to cable. It will be very difficult for DBS providers to come up with enough spectrum to deliver as many SD or HD channels as a 750MHz all-digital cable system using QAM. They would have to scrap their current encoding and transport schemes for more efficient ones (meaning everybody would need a new STB) plus get additional spectrum via mass use of spotbeam satellites, etc.
Pace is cable's "ace" in the hole.
My source for the Pace developments and their impact is an article in Digital Television magazine by Mark Schubin:
http://www.digitaltelevision.com/2003/july/expert_schubin.shtml
ElectricPickle 08-05-03, 02:24 PM Pace is cable's "ace" in the hole.
...speaking of "Ace-in-the-holes", With companies out there like Adelphia I still don't hold out much hope for cable.
George33027 08-05-03, 04:15 PM 10-1 had MNF in HD. I was watching it til it started to rain in Ohio.
David McRoy 08-05-03, 04:48 PM George,
Did I hear correctly today that the game was called off due to lightning? Was that a first?

As did WPLG. Based on posts to the Programming Forum, it might have been a network delayed HD thing.
David--
Had it been a real game -- or even in the early stages of last night's -- they would most likely have waited for the storm to pass and then resumed play. It is not recommended to be on an open field or in a grandstand during a lightning storm.
George33027 08-05-03, 07:34 PM As Bill said it must have been.
I did not stay around to find out if it did resume.
But, as wjbjr implied, I guess it was.
Looked great in HD !
B737Pilot 08-05-03, 08:05 PM I was wondering if you guys good recommend a good indoor antenna to recieve HD channels. My new HDTV will be here Friday and I want to be ready! I would like one as low profile as possible, I dont want a huge antenna in my family room. Antennaweb.org says I live in yellow area for my stations. I tried a $14 RCA antenna but it sucked worse than my rabbit ears. I live in Davie, corner of 136th and 595 if that helps. Any ideas?
George33027 08-06-03, 10:57 AM I bought a RCA amplified antenna at Wal Mart($21). It worked nice until I got my attic antenna.
It has variable amplification, and you can rotate the 2 UHF rings to get a good signal, and it has the rabbit ears for the VHF, which I kept low so it was not obtrusive.
Only problem was when people walked in what I called the path of the antenna and Tx it seem to give interference, but was ok when no one was walking.
B737Pilot 08-06-03, 05:41 PM I just baught the Radio Shack 15-1880 that I have heard so much about on here. Compared to my plain old rabbit ears it sucks! My rabbit ears get a normal to good signal on most stations. There has to be something better than these?
Westonhdguy 08-12-03, 12:09 PM Hi guys. I'm gonna get hd set #2 by adding either a sammy hln617W dlp or a lcos (philips or tosh, i guess) downstairs, to go with the panny 40lc12 I have had for a year in the bedroom. The sammy is everywhere of course and is very popular, so I've seen it a billion times, but does anyone know where I can at least see an LCOS set - even the toshibas that came out last year? Sound Advice is getting a bunch of philips lcos in sometime around the 25th. Anywhere have a set on display now? Any of you own the tosh? thanks.
Any ideas on when 'Perfect Crime' will be showing on WB39 (if at all) this month?
Also an antenna amplifier isn't working for me. In fact my reception is worse when I use it! Any ideas why? Thanks.
Will
Hey does anyone know when wsvn channel 7-1 will go to 480 p. The currect channel 7-1 is 480 i . when will we see them go to 480p and will they be ready to go to 1080 1 next year when 7 does hdtv
hardballpete 08-20-03, 07:10 AM Been experiencing glitches, momentary freezes on ABC 10-1 here in Davie lately.
Anyone else having stability problems lately?
jluzbet 08-20-03, 10:06 AM Do any of you get WFLX- Fox from West Palm ? I am moving in a couple of months to 18st & 152 ave, just wondering if I will be able to pick it up in that location ... any1 near ??

I am near Sunset Dr (SW 72 St) and about 50 Ave. With the smallest RS VHF/UHF outdoor antenna aimed at the Miami towers, I receive WFLX-DT consistently in the 70s and 80s -- sometimes up to 100 with favorable weather conditions.
You might be too far west for that aiming pattern, but you should be able to receive it.

High-definition TV: It'll get there, eventually
By Mike Snider, USA TODAY
Those who had hoped that this fall would be the breakthrough season for high-definition TV will have to wait a little longer.
The major networks are providing more prime-time programming than ever in the pristine digital format with a widescreen picture five times sharper than regular TV. Among new recruits is the highly demanded return of ABC's Monday Night Football in HD.
HDTV is also available to more cable customers, with 112 markets being served by at least one system with HD, more than double last year's figure. Cable networks such as Bravo are ramping up to debut HD channels by year's end.
But among major broadcasters, Fox will have no HD until next fall, when it plans to produce half its prime-time programs in the format. The WB Network, which has more than doubled its HD offerings this year, is delivered digitally by few broadcast affiliates and cable operators. UPN offers no HD at all.
And for users, receiving the shows has gotten no easier. There are no final agreements yet between broadcasters and cable systems on carrying networks' digital channels, and there are no industry-standard, consumer-friendly, "plug and play" set-top boxes, despite the involvement of Congress and the Federal Communications Commission.
"The biggest hurdle is adopting standards that will allow TVs and cable and satellite set-top boxes to work seamlessly with each other," says Myra Moore, founder of Digital Tech Consulting, a Dallas research firm that tracks digital TV.
Progress has been made since the USA's transition to a digital broadcasting standard began more than six years ago. Nearly 1,000 digital stations are operating, and more than 80% of homes can receive at least five digital signals, according to the National Association of Broadcasters. But the transition is still far behind the timetable set by the FCC, and not all those digital stations are offering HD programs.
Five million new HD-compatible TV sets have been sold to date, and the pace is accelerating as prices drop well below $2,000 — 4 million more are expected to be sold this year. But only a fourth of sets sold so far are equipped with the tuners necessary to receive HD signals (usually a $300-and-up accessory). Most buyers, eyeing the confusion, are choosing to bide their time and instead watch DVDs on their sets.
That could change as cable systems roll out HD. Most lease set-top digital boxes to subscribers for $7-$10 a month, plus typical $10-a-month HD charges (similar to that charged by satellite providers DirecTV and Dish Network for their HD packages).
More cable networks are jumping in. Among others, ESPN HD began March 31, and Starz/Encore plans to launch Starz! HD East and West movie channels, a Starz On Demand HD service and a separate Sharper Movies HD service by year's end. "The coming of many cable high-definition channels and local broadcasts in prime time will accelerate the desire" for HD, says Starz/Encore founder John Sie.
A look at other HD on the horizon:
•Bravo HD+ began broadcasting July 31, but isn't yet available anywhere — the network is still negotiating with satellite and cable systems. The channel includes reruns of programs such as The West Wing and, as part of the NBC family, is expected to air some of the Athens Summer Olympics.
•Pay-per-view provider In Demand is launching two HD channels next month. Broadcasts will include movies, sports and other entertainment programs such as Hallmark specials.
•A&E is shooting some current programs and concerts in high definition for a future HD channel; no date has been set.
•PBS, which currently broadcasts an hour or two in HD each week, plans a separate channel that will launch next February. Its round-the-clock programming mix of high-definition and standard-definition programs "upconverted" to widescreen will be available to local PBS broadcasters and cable and satellite providers.
The network is "carefully weighing our investment to high definition," says PBS' Deron Triff, based on the number of homes ready and able to receive it.
Broadcasters hope that figure continues to grow. "This coming television season, the prime-time programming is going to be out there. Sports is out there. Stations have made progress and sets are moving," says John Orlando of the National Association of Broadcasters. "It's out there for consumers."

They still have no plans to upgrade their equipment to allow for 480p, so 1080i service from them is not likely in the near future.
David McRoy 08-21-03, 11:22 AM Actually, WSVN-DT should be aspiring to passing 720p since that's what the Fox broadcast network is going to start distributing next year.
I'm in Kendall and can't seem to pick up WSVN (7) via OTA. Anyone having similar problems and does anyone have a suggestion.
Thanks

I assume that you are referring to the digital channel. Actually, you are not missing much.
If you receive WPLG-DT (10-1), you should be able to get WSVN-DT (7-1). You are aware that its real channel is 8 and have keyed in 8-1 on the remote? Do you receive analog channel 7?
Also, does it appear in the local channel list; and if so, is it checked? I trust that you have rescanned.

Don't worry you are not missing anything, if you are going to waist time triying to get fox, at least try WLFX #29 from Westpalm at least they do 480p:rolleyes:
wjbjr (Bill):
Thanks, it was Channel 8. However, you're right, its not much to watch. I'll try to tune WLFX #29, but no luck tonight. Thanks, jluzbet, as well.

David--
Happy to help. For WFLX, enter 28-1. It will remap to 29-1.
Depending on how far west you are, you might, as I do, get it without turning the antenna more to the north.
evileyeftl 08-23-03, 11:29 AM Just had 2 new channels pop up on my HD200. 39-2 and 75-1, both are mirrors of 39-1. Is my STB crazy ? I have Directv, and 75-1 shows up between ESPN HD and Discovery HD. I thought UHF should only go up to 69-.

That's really weird. I'm using a Samsung SIRT165, and I'm getting the very same thing. The channel banner reads, "TV 75-1 WB" "Andromeda 5:00 - 6:00 pm". And...there's a full list of program titles & times in the T165's mini guide.
Figured out my antenna amplifier problem. The signal strength was too high so it was the same as getting no signal. Put the -10db attenuator on and that helped. Still no luck on the WPB stations though. Is it possible that an FM station is interfering with WFLX for me here in NW Coral Gables? Thanks.

fanatico 08-28-03, 01:12 AM I'm new to the South Florida DTV and HDTV world. Just set up my OTA antenna a few weeks ago. My STB is the Samsung TS160. I'm located in the Doral area and I have an attic-installed Radio Shack UHF/VHF antenna. I hope someone is kind enough to respond to the following general questions. First, could someone please give me a rundown of the OTA channels I SHOULD be receiving. There must be a "Miami area consensus." Second, what's going on with the PBS channels? I seem to get 2-1, 2-2, and 17, and now today on my guide popped up 2-3, 2-4, and 2-5, although there was no programming. What are these channels, and how did they pop up on my guide? I certainly didn't perform a re-scan w/ my receiver. Also, why does 2-1 (the only one I see is a digital channel) not have any true programming? It just seems to be a repeating loop? Finally (last question, I promise), should I be receiving WFLX? It's obviously transmitting a better quality signal than our local Fox station, but I seem to get it only about every third night. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with answers to these (I know) basic questions.

Fanatico,
I will try to answer the most I can, You should be receiving the following :
2-1 PBS, it does remap to another bunch of channels, just delete them manually.
4-1 CBS
5-1 (Maybe) Nbc from WPB
6-1 NBC
7-1 Fox (Dont bother with this one)
10-1 ABC
17-1 WRLN
23-1 Univision
29-1 Fox WBP, I think you should get this with no problem in your location, they are often out of the air but you should pick it up.
33-1 UPN
39-1 WB
47-1 Futura/Telemundo
I might have missed something, this site has a lot of info, check it out www.titantv.com
Good luck & happy viewing
:D
fanatico 08-28-03, 09:51 AM Jluzbet, thank you very much for your response. What do you mean when you say that channel 29-1 "they are often out of the air." Do you mean that their transmitting equipment often shuts down (during normal, prime time, hours, for example), or do you mean that the station just stops transmitting any content after a certain time of night? When I don't get the station, often in the middle of the day or at night, my signal meter reads 0.
fanatico 08-28-03, 10:24 PM Some additional questions. Over the last several days, ever since my STB mysteriously re-mapped my PBS stations and added 2-3, 2-4, and 2-5 to my guide, I have lost my image on 2-1 (the HDTV loop). The signal strength meter says I'm tuning in the station at 77% signal strength. It says the same for 2-3, 2-4, and 2-5. Nevertheless, the screen is black and I get no image. Is PBS doing something which has affected my reception? Am I alone in this regard? Anyone else out there experiencing this?
Can anyone tell me if their is a channel guide or banner available for OTA reception of Hd?
Thanks,
David

Check out this link: http://www.digital2.org/channels.html
They actually have programming on all of those channels, though not all at the same time. They started experimenting with a statistical multiplexer several weeks ago, and I guess they finally got it all working.
fanatico 09-03-03, 10:37 AM Rudy 1, thank you for the link to the PBS website. It answered all my questions. I appreciate it.
George33027 09-05-03, 09:21 AM Is it me, or is there a signal problem with 10-1 ?
All I got last night was pixelation and audio drop outs during the game.
I also noticed that 4-1 is also lower than 100 and I am only 9 miles away.
Had to rotate the antenna to get some kind of picture on 10-1.
Does anyone know of signal problems with the antenna tower for 4-1,6-1 and 10-1 ?
George,
I watched some of the game last night on WPLG without any problems, and WFOR was fine as well. WTVJ was also good....I haven't noticed any problems with the signal.
Rudy
George33027 09-05-03, 04:17 PM Oh no.
I got a new receiver (a Hughs E86, replacement for my Mits HD5)
Had great signals til last night.
Hope the unit is not bad.
Thanks for the feedback.
will check it againg tonight.
George33027 09-05-03, 05:52 PM Rudy;
Thanks again for the info.
I rechecked my unit and when I wiggled the ANT wire my signal droped from 86 to 52 for 10-1.
So I went and replace the ANT cable from the box to the wall and now have 94 and a solid picture.
And, 4-1 and 6-1 are at 100 instead of 92.
Amazing what a cable can do.
Got to be the ground connections.
I have to go and buy a real good connection wrench and replace the cable connectors.
I think the movement on replacement of the unit causes the cables connectors to , what is a good word? not make a good connection.
Now both cables gave picture, but one had some attenuation or a ground oscillation?
George33027 09-06-03, 07:21 PM Now I do feel dumber than dumb.
The problem came back.
So after a while, I tried a fan on the new Hughs E8 STB and picture came in great, and signal went up to 100.
Now this is out in the open, not enclosed at all.
Does this mean the unit is defective and I have to recall and get a new one?
ElectricPickle 09-06-03, 07:23 PM The Hughes E-86HD, Mitsubishi SR-HD400, Toshiba DST-3000 & Philips DSHD800 are all the same except for remote and appearance. All are made by Hughes. They all have the overheating problem. You could keep exchanging it until you get one that works better, but it's best to buy a "next generation" receiver.
George33027 09-07-03, 10:39 AM What is a next generation receiver ?
This Hughes was manufactured in april 2003, but as you said, it is probably the same old design.

My fourth unenclosed HD5/E86 was on its last legs when I added a small desk fan. That was in January. It has been working at 100 for all Miami stations ever since. [Knock wood]
Mike_in_FL 09-10-03, 12:21 PM I have a couple of questions I would appreciate help with:
1) Does anybody live in the Coral Springs area or know of someone with a good OTA set-up? I am interested in a "recommended equipment list". A rooftop antenna is out (HOA restrictions), so it will need to be in the attic.
2) Does anybody have any recommendations for a good installer in the Coral Springs area?
Thanks for your help!
Mike
HofstraJet 09-10-03, 12:37 PM I am in Coral Springs (Eagle Trace near the Sawgrass & Atlantic). I am currently evaluating antennae to see what works best. I can get most of the UHF channels with a ChannelMaster 4228 with the CM 7777 amplifier that I have in the attic (it is laying flat on the joists and diplexed into my cascading multiswitch setup). I am thinking of a rotator for a smaller ChannelMaster 3010 that I want to place in the attic. I can get all the local UHF as well as Palm Beach NBC pretty well. The VHF are the problematic stations (ABC and FOX, though I really only care about ABC for MNF). It is such a problem to get good reception for it and I can't get any of the more distant ABCs either. I haven't found a good solution yet. One antenna that I liked a lot was the Radio Shack 15-1870. It has IR capability and a memory so you can rotate it and preset locations for certain channels. It works great for everything except the VHF stations. A cheaper, smaller solution if you don't mind seeing the antenna on top of your TV (my fiancee did).
I called a few installers (did a yp.bellsouth.com search for antennas in the Fort Lauderdale area). Most were pretty ignorant of the situation as far as coming up with solutions, but all were eager to do whatever I asked them to do as far as actually installing the antenna outside. If you are putting this in your attic, you probably don't need an installer. You will do a much better job by yourself. Just look around these forums for advice on installations or check www.hometheaterspot.com or www.hdtvoice.com for more ideas.
One attic installation I particularly liked is here: http://www.fota.net/antenna/
He goes into a lot of detail, but the idea is pretty simple and not that difficult.
Please let us know if you find a good solution for ABC. MNF is becoming a real hassle.
I'm in the area of Wiles and riverside. Pointing a Lows Stealth (not sure of the brand ) 59.95 or 35.00 on the net) south I can pick up everything south and north. Using a lower gain antenna allows me to pickup station better on the back side. A very high gain antenna will guarantee that you will have to rotate it because of a high side rejection and a high front to back ratio.
As far as the the antenna restrictions. The law that allows you to install a mini dish. Also covers a TV antenna. This is a federal mandate from the FCC.
I just installed one for a friend in CS on her Dish mount at the peak of the roof. No complaints so far.
Mike_in_FL 09-10-03, 01:38 PM HofstraJet and Ken,
Thanks for the advice and suggestions. I will do some more research!
Mike
HofstraJet 09-10-03, 03:48 PM Ken,
Do you have an amp on the stealth? Is it this antenna: http://www.channelmaster.com/Pages/s1.htm (the Stealth 3010)? That is the antenna I have and it is very hard to get ABC. Wondering if the amp is causing problems? I'll try again tonight. BTW, is your antenna outside or in the attic? Mine is currently in the living room near the windows so I can see where to aim it properly in the attic. Thanks.
Yes I do have the amp. I first used it with out but added it later.
This is the link for Warren. There prices are much better than Lows.
http://www.warrenelectronics.com/
My antenna is on a 65' tower. My friend that I put one up and is picking everything up OK from a roof mount. But in the beginning we did the living room and had the same problem.
If you put it in the attic, raise it as high as possible and keep as far from any metal. Keep enough room to rotate.
If you can have a dish you can have the stealth.
HofstraJet 09-10-03, 05:53 PM 65 foot tower? I get the feeling that's 65 inch tower. :D
The tower is 65 Foot on top of that is 12 foot mast with a HF 10-40 7 element beam and two other smaller antennas above that for a total of over 80 foot. My hd antenna is at 60 foot level.
And you can't see the tower from the front of the house..GRIN
I'm a ham.
I had the Channelmaster Stealth 3010 with amplifier and it worked for a short while. Then, I lost ABC and Fox. After calls to tech support and suggestions I received in this thread, it turned out that ABC and Fox are VHS stations and that the antenna board lost its VHS pickup. Rather than replace the board (amplifier), and still having VHS problems, I switched to one of Channelmaster's better-line combination traditional boom antennas and its perfect. Get the one for the distance you need. If you want the particular model number, let me know and I'll look it up.

Mike--
If your home is free standing, the HOA cannot prevent you from mounting an outdoor antenna or a dish.
Here is the FCC regulation:
http://www.fcc.gov/mb/facts/otard.html
I liver near the Miami downtown area (Brickell / Coconut Grove ) I obtain 100 strength on all my UHF Digital channel but my VHF 8 and 9 / Fox and ABC cannot obtain a signal strength greater than 30 thus leading to persistent dropouts. I have an E 86 Hughes (with latest software update 5104) and VHF/UHF outdoor antennae professionally installed and grounded by a local antenna/satellite dealer. I have adjusted the antennae with no improvent in the VHF reception. My installer has re-eval my setup and states my signal strength for local fox and Abc is strong. I believe him because my Panasonic HDTV receiver delivers a great picture on fox and abc with no pixelation (unfortunately this receiver has no signal meter) and my analog ABC and Fox picture is great on both receivers ! I had my E 86 replaced and Fans placed near it with no improvement. Recently I plugged in RCA rabbit ear type antennae and remarkably I get a signal strength 60-70 on FOX/ABC with a good picture. What wrong with my antennae ? Could my signal be too strong for my E 86 ?? Appreciate any input /tips in correcting this problem .
PS … there are some buildings 2 blocks away and some large trees nearby.
THANKS IN ADVANCE ..
joval--
Is the Panasonic receiver hooked up to the same antenna as the E86? If not, you might try it to see what happens.
Your answers might help in diagnosing your problem.
Yesthe panasonic receiver has plugged to the same antenna cable with excellent results with fox and abc
Doug888 09-12-03, 12:42 PM Good Day Fellas !
I am moving into a condo here in Lauderdale by the Sea at the end of the month. I have a southern exposure and a balcony that would allow me to point an antenna E, SE, S, SW and W. I am on the 16th floor. I have experience with UHF only HD OTA in Denver and was able to receive all the stations that were broadcast there.
My question is this. Does anyone have experience/recommendations for a UHF/VHF antenna from a balcony that would allow me to receive Miami and WPB OTA, without becoming the "new guy that put that godforsaken antenna on his balcony" ?
You help is much appreciated

online2much 09-12-03, 08:09 PM Someone is asleep at the switch at channel 4.I finally get around to watching CSI for the first time, and channel 4 doesn't flip the switch. I have to rotate my (fairly new) antenna to get channel 12 from WPB. It comes in good tonight, but with short audio drop outs every 5-10 minutes. Argh.
Edited to add that I got pissed and switched over to U2: Rattle and Hum on HdNet Movies on DTV. I could do without their political views, but gotta admit, I like their music, at least the older stuff. Looks and sounds great..

Very aggravating when errors like that occur. Anyway, steps have been taken to reduce the chance of that happening again.
Hope you'll be watching more HD on WFOR.

Thanks much for that information WJBJR.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles should be in HD on WBFS-DT on 9/21 @ 3pm. Finally get to catch one of these HDOne movies because I can record it with my Zenith HDR-230. Why they show them in the afternoon I will never understand.

By NFL rule, ESPN games must also be made available to an OTA station in the teams' home cities.
Miami station WBFS (CH 33) will have it. Whether they will carry it in HD on their digital channel 33-1 (32) remains to be seen.

No news yet on UPN doing HD. And due the way the WB programs are time shifted on WTVX, we are not able to air them in HD. We are looking at ways to make it pratical to do so but I don't know when that might happen.

jbhumphreys 09-23-03, 11:20 PM What kind of Antenna do you guys use to watch local HDTV channels here in South Florida? Would like to get an outdoor antenna that does not really look like the conventional type.
jbhumphreys-
I tried the Stealth antenna but had problems with 7.1 and 10.1. I now have the Channelmaster 3677 which is a conventional type antenna but works great. Channelmaster has several lines and this (crossfire) is in their top line, yet still can be found for under $100 shipped. Go to their website at www.channelmaster.com. I live in West Kendall and now get all the locals, up to and including WFLX Palm Beach perfectly.

Law & Order: SVU appears to have been messed up all around the country. The HD feed was just a blck screen for several minutes at the start, then they switched to 4:3 for the rest of the show. Pretty disappointing performance for the network on the season premieres of their best shows.

Well, it was in HD for part of the show, anyway. Why can't these people be on the ball? WPLG was the first station in the DMA to have HD, and they seem to be getting worse and worse.
mmburke 10-08-03, 11:30 PM Has anyone noticed that if you go to the Info screen (the one that tells you what's on) for WTVJ-DT (NBC Ch 6), that it is one hour early. This plays havoc with time recordings.
All other digital channels show the right time, Ch 6-1 is off.
Is this just a quirk in my DTC100 or does anyone have same anomoly?

Both Enterprise and Jake 2.0 looked terrific on UPN 33. Though the sound was only DD 2.0, the razor-sharp images more than made up for it.

TimHuey 10-18-03, 01:06 AM I just spoke with a comcast representative and he said they plan to roll out HBO HD and one other channel first beginning next month. I know that customer service telephone reps are at the top of the need to know chain but it can't hurt to verify this.

hardballpete 10-18-03, 07:57 AM Lately I've been experiencing regular glitches on OTA HD programs with my Hughes E86 box in Davie. Momentary freezes and pixellation is what is happening on all local OTA programming. Never had this problem before. Very annoying!
Anyone else seeing similar problems? I have no problems with Directv HD shows off the satellite, just OTA HD!
Maybe my box is going south?
HobeSoundDarryl 10-18-03, 09:12 AM I've heard a similar rumor about Adelphia: "next month, expect some local HD carriage". However, the source is probably less reliable than more, and I find it exceessively hard to believe with regards to Adelphia. Someone on the WPB thread said, the only thing they've heard about Adelphia next month is a "price increase". Perhaps the definition of "definition" in HD for Adelphis is "Mo' Money".
On guts alone, I could take a leap on the Comcast rumor easier than the Adelphia one.
I called COMCAST regarding the rumors of HDTV carriage in November, but the only thing the rep was able to confirm is that pricing is going up for all services. This information matches that contained in the flyer I received in the mail yesterday outlining the new rates for analog and digital cable. Nowhere in the flyer is HDTV mentioned, and I suspect that if they intended to roll out HD service next month they would mention it in the flyer if only to placate those who would be outraged by yet another price increase.
btickets 10-19-03, 11:58 AM I have been experiencing the exact same problems in Plantation. I have the Hughes E86 box and it started happening about three days ago. It only happens on the OTA HD programs. What's going on?
hardballpete 10-19-03, 04:50 PM Wow, you too? I am having a hell of a time with WFOR 4-1 especially! Happens on some others, but nowhere near the frequency of 4-1.
I called Hughes for a replacement box, but now...I don't know what the frick is going on.
Anyone else out there in broward with a similar problem that has developed recently? If so, what box are you using?
Geez, this sux!
HofstraJet 10-19-03, 11:54 PM It is such a joke that WSVN does not show the World Series in 480p, like the WPB affiliate does (let alone the joke that Fox doesn't do 1080i or 720p). I called them up during the game and spoke with engineering and asked why and they are not showing what Fox was transmitting and he said they are passing what Fox was broadcasting. I said that the WPB affiliate was showing 480p and he said "well, we can't do that yet." What a joke.
I just spoke with WFOR engineering.
The good news is that they are aware of the DT problem. The bad news is that they don't know what is causing it.
They suspect some type of outside interference, and are checking at both the studio and the transmitter. They might have to shut down in order to search further.
George33027 10-20-03, 12:07 PM Great;
Thanks Bill for informing WFOR
I have been having the same problem. I tought it was the E86 OTA problem, because HBO-HD is solid.
Then I tried playing rotating the antenna, and I have a fan on top that I set to high thinking the E86 box was starting to go again.
WFOR is the worst.
Yesterday it was the ONLY channel to give me pixelation and audio drop outs with a signal over 100.
It has to be interference, and it does happen every 2 min or so.
I wonder if WPB is starting to become our problem ?
George33027 10-20-03, 12:09 PM Second thought.
5-1 had the same problems and they re-booted their system and it went away.
Wonder if 4-1 could do the same ?
AND
just a guess, but didn't it start when UPN started with HD ?
NoUDont 10-20-03, 01:08 PM Hey guys I live in Silver Isles in Miramar/Pembroke Pines I have an an antenna installed in my attic and receive all the locals with solid above 90's most at 100.
But with the Marlins in the World Series, and that embarrassment of a station WSVN not broadcasting in 480p, I was wondering if there is anything that I can do to try and boost my reception of WFLX in WPB which right now only registers in the low 30's and has massive amounts of break ups?
HofstraJet 10-20-03, 02:37 PM A simple suggestion (sorry if you tried this), but did you try rotating your antenna? You probably have it facing south right now and to get WPB, you need to face north.
NoUDont 10-20-03, 03:02 PM Thanks for the suggestion HofstraJet, but unfortunatey the antenna is tightwrapped to the beams in the attic making turning it to face north not an option.
George33027 10-20-03, 04:55 PM NoUDont
I am a block away from you and I also have my antenna in the attic.
I have bought a PVC pipe and nailled it to the attic beams.
I then put the antenna on it an manually tuned it and it worked for a while.
Then I bought a rotor, and cut the pvc pipe and mounted it so it does turn in the attic.
Now I see that to get the best of all worlds you need to be at 20 degrees which is North by Northeast.
George33027 10-20-03, 05:00 PM BUT,
It doesn't matter where you point for 4-1, you still get break ups and sound breaks.
The signal can be from 50 to 100+ and the same results.
I get a solid 29-1 at 52, so I know it is interference of some kind.
4-1 was always rock solid till a week ago.

NoUDont 10-20-03, 06:04 PM Thanks George, do you have a picture of what it looks like?
btickets 10-20-03, 11:13 PM I'm glad the people at WFOR seem to be on top of the problem with their signal, but the issue, at least for me, is with all the local OTA networks. It has gotten progressively worse since last week. They are all unwatchable at this point. I guess the Dolphin Game on MNF will have to be seen in SD.
Although the way they're playing, may not be such a bad thing.
Can it be the E86 when it is only the OTA signals that are affected? Wouldn't it affect everything?

This sounds suspiciously like the all too common E86 (and its clones) heat problem. It does indeed only affect OTA reception and gets progressively worse over time if not treated.
The cure is to add a fan for cooling. Some use a computer fan, while others place a small, quiet desk fan in a position to blow across the top of the receiver. Low speed will suffice. The fan must run full time, as the receiver is always on, even when "turned off".
aviators99 10-21-03, 05:49 AM No, the problem is also on the DTC-100 *and* Zenith HDR230. And apparently, according to the West Palm Beach thread, it is affecting stations up there, too.
David McRoy 10-21-03, 08:43 AM As Ken from WFOR stated, this is a station issue, not a receiver issue. The same thing's happening up here where I usually get WFOR-DT flawlessly.
Thanks for the updates, Ken.
aviators and David --
Perhaps I am taking your posts out of context, but if you are referring to my post about E86 heating problems, I believe that we are talking about two entirely different things.
As described by btickets, his complaint is a classic description of the E86 (and clones) heat problem and has nothing to do with other receiver brands or specific stations. (He refers to problems with ALL OTA stations.) It is a condition that has existed since long before the current reception difficulties began.
Believe me, I know, having gone through three HD5/E86 swaps before adding a fan to the fast fading fourth one. Since doing so in January, I receive all Miami stations at 100%.
There are several threads pertaining to this subject in the HDTV Hardware Forum.
David McRoy 10-21-03, 11:48 AM Bill,
Thanks for the clarification. Does the E86 and its clones have problems with just local ATSC reception when it overheats or does this affect satellite reception as well? I ask because I have problems on three local DTV stations but never a problem with any of the other locals or with DirecTV.

David --
It affects OTA only. Why, I don't know, but that is the universal experience. It shows as rapidly fluctuating signal readings and causes breakups.
Locating the receiver outside of a cabinet, as were mine, does not necessarily prevent the condition.
A small, constantly running, desk fan ($10-$15 at Office Depot) blowing across the top of the receiver at low speed should eliminate the problem. I cannot hear my fan with the audio on. Some people use a powered down computer fan atop the receiver to exhaust the heat. The latter method is well described in the Hardware Forum.
David McRoy 10-21-03, 02:41 PM Bill,
When overheating, does it disrupt reception on all OTA digital stations or some but not others?

David --
As best I remember -- and with apologies to A. Lincoln -- it disrupted none, some or all of the stations some of the time, some of the stations most of the time, but rarely all of the stations all of the time. In other words, it varied.
The major symptom was a lower and irregular, or bouncing signal number, which at times sank to a reception affecting level.
My advice would be to apply a fan and see what happens.
David McRoy 10-21-03, 04:44 PM Thanks so much, Bill! Will do...

Ken
hardballpete 10-22-03, 08:19 AM Can you give us a projected fix date? If you got new parts, you obviously know what the problem is.
I miss my rock solid CBS signal...please Ken, do your magic!
George33027 10-22-03, 11:26 AM The heat problem effects all OTA in varing degrees.
I believe it is in the detection chips and produces errors which cause pixelation and audio drop outs.
A fan blowing into the top of the receiver for about a few minutes will clear it up fast.
Then you know you need a exhause fan to maintain it.
It is like the CPU chip that computer manufurers finally added a small fan to keep it with in temp limits.
In general, a 4 inch 12 volt fan running at 6 volts or so will exhaust the heat and keep it working.
But, I did everything with fans and antenna rotor movements to prove that only 4-1 had a problem.
Now, that Ken said he is working it, makes me feel good.
Went back to my original settings and all OTA works fine except 4-1.
It was worse yesterday, but I hope it will be fixed soon.
"A fan blowing into the top of the receiver for about a few minutes will clear it up fast.
Then you know you need a exhause fan to maintain it."
George --
I have had success for ten months with a small desk fan blowing constantly across the top of the receiver; and have no mechanical need for an exhaust fan. Some have installed them for space or perceived aesthetic considerations.

ElectricPickle 10-22-03, 04:25 PM Thanks Ken for keeping everyone updated.
George33027 10-22-03, 07:54 PM Bill;
I meant if you had no fan running, then a quick cool down is to blow into the top for a few minutes. Then if the signal goes up and the pix clears up you know it is a heat problem.
As you said a fan blowing across the top does in fact produce a lower air pressure on top (like an airplane wing) and gives the same results as an exhaust fan.
Either method works, because it needs just a little help to remove the 70+ watts of heat .
It was just designed poorly.
George33027 10-22-03, 07:56 PM Thanks Ken for your support.
hardballpete 10-23-03, 07:11 AM All is back to normal, bro!
dharding 10-25-03, 02:02 PM PAX 35 is now on the air. It is DT 26. The picture is the worse I have ever seen. It has ghosts and smears. I am guessing they have a analog receiver at the DT transmitter with a 99 cent radio shack loop antenna feeding the analog signal to the encoder and then transmitting it. I am sure I am wrong but it is the only thing I can come up with to explain the absolutely horrid picture. I did not think digital could look that bad. WSVN is no longer the worse digital channel in South Florida. :D
George33027 10-25-03, 02:17 PM Do we know what their intent is?
Is this just in testing mode, or will they really consider DT and possible HD?
HofstraJet 10-26-03, 01:06 PM Has 29-1 gone out? I can't get it anymore (I was watching the World Series last night without incident).

I hope their intent is to eventually turn the channel over to someone who can actually afford to broadcast some decent looking images, even if it's just 480p widescreen. My crappy cable signal from Comcast is FAR superior to what I've seen today on PAX 35. They should be fined for trying to ruin our eyes with that stuff!

WFLX 29-1 has been a "tentative" channel from the very start. They don't always turn it on, and they don't always pass through the network's widescreen programming, despite the fact that they upconvert everything they broadcast to 1080i. And I've yet to see any of the FOX sporting events aired on 29-1 in DD 5.1. I don't get it...why bother spending the money on expensive digital broadcast equipment then refuse to run it 24/7?
HofstraJet 10-26-03, 07:27 PM Good question Rudy.

They turned on for the 1 PM football game 20-30 minutes late and are broadcasting now.
HofstraJet 10-27-03, 08:18 AM What a joke of a network affiliate. They need to get their act together - this is a golden opportunity for them to steal viewers from WSVN, who a) doesn't do ED yet and b) broadcasts on VHF and is very hard to get. If 29-1 can operate properly, I'd never watch WSVN again.
EDIT: See my post here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=2845812#post2845812) for WFLX Fox 29's response to the outage.

Somebody needs to sit "Butch" down and explain the facts of life to him. If all they do is run the damn thing when they're good and ready, they'll never learn enough about the equipment to get it working right ALL the time. And as for the comment that only a few people are watching....did he realize that not everybody who's watching is going to take the time to try to get through to anyone with sense at his station to let him know? I've called them myself dozens of times, and it's always like the Twilight Zone if I can't reach him personally.
It's this sort of "I won't do it until somebody holds a gun to my head" attitude why we have to rely on the Japanese, the Chinese, and the Koreans for innovations in CE technology.

Both the Hurricanes-Virginia Tech (Saturday, 7:45PM ESPN) and the Dolphins-Colts (Sunday, 1PM CBS) games will be simulcast in HD.
dharding 10-31-03, 08:41 PM I first posted about this two years ago when WFOR DT signed on. During SD broadcast during brite white scenes Brite White horizontal lines would appear in the picture and it would shake. This only happened on SD and Never on their HD broadcast. Every other station was perfect. Then WTVJ signed on and the lines would appear during SD and HD broadcast during brite white scenes on my two Panasonic CT34WX50 tvs. I have noticed this week that the lines are now GONE on both WTVJ and WFOR. What ever you guys did, what ever tweaks or adjustments you made to the signal fixed the problem. THANKS!!!:)

I didn't tune in until "Law & Order" started, and I didn't experience any static during that show.
I did not notice anything during 'The West Wing'.
By the way, is anyone receiving a signal from WPPB-DT 63-1? According to TitanTV they're live, but I just tried and only got their analog channel.

Yes. I heard the static, too. It seemed to go away during the West Wing.
There was also a lot of very loud static at the start of "Law & Order:CI" tonight, though it went away later on in the show. I think I'll drop the engineer at WTVJ a line or two about this.
Doug888 11-10-03, 09:10 AM I also received static at the beginning of Law and Order last night. It was clear when they came back from commercial.

I don't think they can broadcast shows in 5.1 if the network doesn't feed the programs to them that way. As for guide data, that is part of PSIP, and so far the only station in the Miami market that was providing guide data (sporadically, I must add) is WSVN. When WPBT first went live, they provided guide data one Saturday, but I haven't seen it since. I've never seen guide data for WFOR, WPLG, or WTVJ; I guess we won't see it until they have staff specifically assigned to setting it up on a regular basis.
---Rudy
Rudy --
Something is amiss. I receive guide data and program descriptions for all Miami DT stations except WTVJ, WPXM (35-1) and WAMI (69-1).
As best I remember, in most cases I have had it since the stations went on the air or soon thereafter.
Not that it matters much, as, with the exception of WPBT, they all duplicate the information given for the analog channel. This allows me to use the TiVo guide, which I prefer.
Could it be that your zip code is outside the Miami guide area? Try mine - 33146 - and see what happens.
HofstraJet 11-12-03, 02:24 PM Rudy,
I have guide data just like Bill - all channels except WTVJ, WPXM (35-1) and WAMI (69-1). Also, Palm Beach NBC broadcasts in 5.1 whenever the network provides it (such as Law & Order), but WTVJ does not.
David & Bill,
Unlike you fortunate fellows, I don't use DBS service to receive my local digital channels....I use an OTA STB. Thus, I don't enjoy the luxury of DD5.1 on any of the NBC shows, and guide data is something I've only rarely encountered. :)
---Rudy
I just found this site, and it lists current shows that are broadcast in DD 5.1:

George33027 11-16-03, 09:42 AM Anyone notice that there was a big hiss of noise with audio on 6-1, Law and Order CI last night?
I actually noticed that, George. I've been emailing them whenever I encounter problems with the signal. In fact, tonight's first episode of Law & Order is in SD and it's not supposed to be so I'll drop them a line about it.
Their director of engineering just told me that they now have channel guide info (3 days) on 39-1, in addition to spanish language audio on 39-2.
George33027 11-17-03, 04:33 PM Will check the channel guide later.
Your are right about the L&O in SD, especially since at the beginning the bottom of the screen said it was available in HD.
I thought someone forgot to set a switch or something.
I noticed that WBZL is doing closed captioning on 75.2 as well. Those guys are really on the ball! Using the features is good.
Congratulations to Ken MacKinnon and his staff at WFOR....the broadcast was flawless!
Anybody else getting lots of pixellation this afternoon on WBFS-DT?
abramsky 11-23-03, 06:33 PM I will be moving to Lake Worth in the spring. I understand the Adelphia will be my cable provider.
Does anyone know what Adelphia's HD offerings are or will be in the near future?
HobeSoundDarryl 11-24-03, 03:41 PM abramsky, good luck on Adelphia HD. Phrases come to mind regarding flying pigs and frozen Hell. There have been many rumors about it coming on "next month" for several months now. One of the stronger rumors had Adelphia launching HD in mid-November. Still nothing. Some Adelphia operations around the country have apparently started doing some HD, so I guess there can be hope.
On the positive side, welcome to Florida. A big advantage to Lake Worth is that you will be living in-between 2 big DTV markets- West Palm and Miami. With an average antenna and some decent hardware, you will be able to pull a lot of programming from both cities. That whole Boca-Delray-Lake Worth zone seems prime for maximizing south Florida DTV. Enjoy
A Comcast rep told me that they will begin offering HDTV over cable in late December. She didn't have any other details.

I wonder if they'll have enough bandwidth to carry all of the locals?
George33027 11-26-03, 07:07 PM I believe that cable bandwidth will be less than OTA bandwidth, because of the different modulation.
It looks like cable companies are adding the same HD as DirecTV has.
Neither will put on local HD in the near future.
Petteri 11-27-03, 08:00 AM Right now Charter has NBC and ABC. They have had both for a few months now. No word on any other locals. Be nice if they could add Fox Sports Net like TWC just did.

Does Charter have NBC and ABC in High Def?
If so, any comparisons to OTA?

Yes both are in HD. I'd say that OTA has a slight edge, esp. with ABC. That could be due to the convrsion by Charters SA 3100HD box from 720p to 1080i though. Charter aslo carries in HD:
HDNet
HDNet Movies
Discovery HD Theater
HBO
Showtime
They haven't added any HD channels in a few months though. The CHARTER here just got bought up by some other company though. I don't know what affect that may have on the HD plans for this area.
I called the City of Ft. Lauderdale's telecommunications office, and the guy I spoke to had no information on Comcast's plans for an HD rollout. It appears that the City's Telecommunications Manager has retired and he was the key contact person between Comcast and the City. When I spoke to one of the CSR's at Comcast, she stated that they expect to begin offering HD channels in December or January at the latest, and that the rollout would occur gradually over a period of several months. She had no information on pricing or which channels their HD lineup would include, so I didn't bother asking her which STB they would be using.
George33027 11-28-03, 10:03 AM I assume in a year or two there will be TV's with "digital cable ready" tuners, just like they did with cable.
Pay-per-view will always require a special box.
Panasonic already has this feature on some of their new models. Here is a description:
CableCARD
This new cable TV standard incorporates the functions of a traditional cable box into a small device that fits in a slot in your TV. With the use of an authorized Digital Cable Module (CableCARD), consumers can receive digital cable services, including premium and HDTV cable channels, without the need for a set-top box. Services and the module are supplied by the local cable company. Please contact your local cable company for availability of services and the Digital Cable Module
I just checked the Comcast website, and found this page (though the link at the bottom of the page for signing up does not work yet):

aviators99 12-17-03, 02:53 PM I corresponded with the programming department of WBZL, and they claim that the Rose Parade will be in HD on Jan 1, live from Pasedena. Thought you'd all want to know.
gene inger 12-18-03, 12:28 AM Comcast HD in Ft. Lauderdale, though not formerly initiated, IS coming over their cable, and accessible if you have a QAM tuner built-in. Of course this will not obtain premium channels until or unless you have cable card (as far as not using a 'box'), but for now, ABC and NBC are being carried, and at least in my area (off Las Olas) working just fine.
They tune-in on something like 124.1 and 124.2 and are indistinugishable from over-the-air carriage on the same set (a Sony XBR70) or via the OTA on my HD200. Discovered this sort of by accident yesterday, but while not needed (for those with line-of-sight antenna enbaled), is good to know. My apologies if this has been mentioned, but I haven't noticed any posting to the effect that this is up and running for at least the 2 (only) stations.
happy holidays!
Gene,
I just spoke to one of their guys and he says that they'll have 11 channels to start, including HBO and ESPN HD, as well as the locals (he wasn't too sure about CBS). They expect to offer Discovery HD Theatre as well in the near future.
---Rudy
gene inger 12-19-03, 10:18 AM Hi Rudy-
Thanks for the info. I merely posted as I thought many didn't realize that HD is being carried right now at least in our part of Ft. Lauderdale, albeit only on 2 channels (so far), and not needed relative to good OTA reception
Thanks for the info. on the 11 channels; more than I thought they'd carry. I know that CBS is an issue for them in other cities, where affiliates (and this one is an O&O.. owned and operated by the Network) want compensation for providing an HD signal. Presumably that's a non-issue in the long-term.
In a high-rise it's probably more challenging, but I've enjoyed receiving all of the available HD channels by virtue of DirecTV HD and an OTA antenna for some time, so the fact my newest Sony XBR picks-up QAM cable HD was just a bonus, and sort of fun to discover...
happy holidays!
Hey, Gene....let us know when ESPN-HD pops up on Comcast. From what I was told by the CSR, it is part of their lineup along with the 2 INHD channels. Have a great holiday!
---Rudy
The feature I am interested in is hdtv pvr. Anyone know if this is going to happen and if so when for Coral Gables? Also any pricing details yet? Thanks.
holtwm,
In response to your question regarding the HDTV PVR, the CSR I spoke to said that they hope to have the new Motorola unit out by April or May; if I remember correctly, one of the latest Motorola STBs has PVR capabilities. He was not able to give me any pricing information, and he stressed that they are still in "test mode" as far as broadcasting the locals in HD is concerned.

George33027 12-24-03, 01:53 PM I wonder if DirecTV will go back to ala-carte additions without having Total Choice?
Since High Def is starting to come out on cable
discodol 12-30-03, 01:39 PM The following appeared in the Sun Sentinel today:
Business Briefing
-- Staff reports, Bloomberg News and Wire reports
Posted December 30 2003
Comcast makes high-definition push
Comcast Cable will offer high-definition programming on 12 channels in certain South Florida areas starting Thursday. The areas have been rebuilt for higher bandwidth, including systems in Fort Lauderdale, Davie, Plantation, Coral Gables, Hialeah and Miami. To get the better picture, viewers must have a set built to handle the technology and a set-top box provided by Comcast.
So I called Comcast and the agent looked up my location and found that HDTV is available in my area. If you do not already have their Digital Service you can get HDTV for 5.10 per month for the box, 5.00 for the HDTV service, and 29.95 to install. He said the box would be Motorola but was not sure of the model. Without Digital service you could get ESPN, ABC, NBC, FOX, and PBS in HDTV. If you upgrade to Digital service you can get the premium channels Cinemax, Showtime, HBO, and Starz in HDTV for an extra charge. There are currently no promotions to entice folks to switch from their current HDTV provider.
Since I already have DTC100 with the HDTV package from Directv I did not place an order. I am going to have to check and see if there is a way to hook up two HDTV sources to my Mits ws65905? Any ideas?
Thanks for the info. Placed my order today. We will see what they actually install and if it can record.
Check out the JVC JXS111 to hook up multiple component video sources to one component video input.
TC_Lauderdale 12-30-03, 03:33 PM I was just handed the Sun Sentinel article after lunch today! Cannot believe Comcast is finally in my area (Plantation, FL) with HD. I was poking around earlier in the week and noticed a few HD channels including the INHD, HBO, Showtime and local channels high up near the PPV ranges. I'm schedule to get the new box Tuesday, will post how it goes.
The CSR said that there is no pickup units available due to the lack of receivers.
Do you guys think this Motorola box will include Dolby 5.1+?
:D
toddmoe 12-30-03, 05:05 PM My neighbor works for Comcast and is actually in charge of the HD rollout for South Florida. I haven't paid too much attention since I live in Lake Worth and don't have Comcast cable, but being an HD geek we have chit chatted about it a bit. I have heard that it is in fact a Motorola box but that Motorola is having some difficulty keeping up with the demand. I also believe that it is a PVR. I also believe that CBS will be a part of the package since that have now signed an agreement.
If anyone has any particular questions I'll be happy to ask and pass the answers back on to you all. One last note though, I'm in Dallas until Jan 3rd so don't expect any responses until then.
George33027 12-30-03, 07:15 PM I see sony and yamaha have home theaters units that can switch the component videos and decode DTS and up.
This is smart, so you can have 2 HDTV components swithchable.
Unfortunately, the Fox channel that they are carrying is WSVN, so we won't have any HD from Fox anytime soon. The CSR I just spoke to indicated that they expect to eventually have Discovery HDTheater to their lineup.

Rudy--
Could not one keep one's current but otherwise useless DirecTV/Dish STB hooked up for OTA only via the JVC switch mentioned by Will Holt and continue to tune to WFLX-DT and WFOR-DT (until Comcast adds it).
It would also provide local HD/SD backup for those occasions -- rare as they may be <g> -- when the cable broadcast goes caput.
Will old, abandoned RG59 cable wiring work with Comcast digital, or must it be replaced?
Also, please remind me as to why we want to switch from DirecTV to Comcast.
Bill,
According to Comcast, the wiring currently in your home should work just fine. I don't see any incentive for those of you with DBS service who are receiving the locals OTA to switch to Comcast. However, I can't have DBS service where I live, so when Comcast offers a more "complete" HD lineup (one that includes BravoHD and DiscoveryHDTheater), along with a FireWire recording solution, I'll switch and keep the OTA tuners for backup. Both of my AV receivers perform HD component-video switching, so it would not be a problem to connect both types of tuners to my TVs that way.
Have a Happy New Year, guys!
---Rudy
Rudy --
I had forgotten about your geographic misfortune regarding DBS.
In any case, with my investment in four DirecTiVos, four dishes (one three dish combination and one triple dish -- similar to wearing both a belt and suspenders) and the HD STB, I really have no interest in switching back. Also, I would miss out on the opportunity to spend even more for the promised soon to come HD TiVo.
Happy New Year!

When you get a chance, see if you can find out from your neighbor whether the Comcast box will have a working FireWire output. I currently have OTA receivers with FireWire outputs that I use to record to DVHS, and the only way I'm going to replace them is if the cable boxes have similar capabilities. Also, ask him if their lineup will include Bravo HD and Discovery HD Theater. Those are the two I would watch the most. Thanks!
aviators99 01-01-04, 11:49 AM WBZL-DT is carrying the Rose Parade as promised, but unfortunately a certain local electronics superstore arranged for a "HD SPONSORED BY <store name>" in large bright letters on the upper right of the picture. Maybe a smart strategy to get people to replace their plasmas from the burn-in of their store name, but I switched to Discovery-HD.
I have seen this question posted some months back in this forum with no answer -- What indoor (or balcony acceptable) antenna can be used to receive both VHF and UHF signals? With both ABC and FOX on VHF, there must be other hi-rise dwellers who have this same problem.
I was hoping the Silver Sensor would do the trick, but it's UHF only. I have tested this antenna on my current analog set and though I do get VHF, it comes in poorly. I plan on getting an inline amp, though that doesn't really change antenna basics.
Any clues or answers? I currently have a DSS dish on my balcony and I could affix one of those "clip on" antennas, but I have seen few reviews on those units. I am located on the beach, hi-rise, due east of the Miramar antenna farm.
Thanks in advance.
Radin,
I have a MegaWave antenna (2nd floor apartment, downtown Ft. Lauderdale) connected to a Channel Master 7777 amp, and it picks up the Miami stations just fine. Go to http://www.megawave.com/.

toddmoe 01-04-04, 10:16 AM Some new Comcast info..
OK guys back in Florida and talked to my neighbor. Here are a couple of facts.
- CBS is a done deal and it will be there.
- About 50% of the areas are now sending HD signal, even if not "official".
- A PVR and non- PVR box will be available - about 5 hrs of recording time for HD and about 30hrs for SD. These are all Motorola
- All of the new boxes will have firewire outputs, but (and this is a big but) they have not been able to get it to work. All of the boxes with firewire eventually cause the box to crash and require an unplug from the power to get a reset. Therefor they will not release any of these boxes until they have the software worked out with Motorola.
- He believes that the firewire is HDCP compliant but wasn't really sure. Nor am I, not even sure if that exists, so he's going to check it out, but I figured that might me the next question.
- Lastly, there will be HD VOD by the end of the year. At least that is the plan.
Hope this is helpful
Kat1994 01-04-04, 11:57 AM Hello,

My question is regarding Comcast HD rollout here in S FLA...
"Does anyone know when Coconut Creek / Margate will be available for HD"?
toodmoe,
Thanks for getting that information to us.

toddmoe 01-04-04, 04:21 PM TC_Lauderdale - Yes the boxes all have "Dolby Digital" AC3, they have SPDIF connectors and pretty sure they also have a secondary coax digital, but not 100% on that.
TC_Lauderdale 01-06-04, 10:55 PM Thanks for all the info toddmoe.
Well the Comcast installer showed up and introduced me to my first HD experience. She installed the Motorola DCT5100 cable box and even threw in a high-end 10' component cable.
So far the following channels are available:

online2much 01-07-04, 05:43 AM Is FOX HD (impossible), ED, or WSVN channel 7 (NO D) ?
TC_Lauderdale 01-07-04, 10:21 AM online2much,
I'm not sure about WSVN as unlike satellite, I cannot see the signal type display on-screen, I don't think the Motorola has that capability.
David McRoy 01-07-04, 10:26 AM WSVN-DT sends 480i (SD) only.
The Fox broadcast network is supposed to start some 720p HD programming this year.
discodol 01-07-04, 01:00 PM TC Lauderdale, How does Comcast HD look? Can you compare it to any other HD sources like Directv or OTA?
And how much does that package cost?
TC_Lauderdale 01-07-04, 02:32 PM discodol,
I can honestly say the reception so far has been as good, if not better than DirecTV. I don't have an OTA receiver, but from other posts, we are in a great location for the signals. I am eagerly awaiting the Super Bowl to really critique the system, but the NBC lineup last night was very good, although not as good as "Spider-man" on HBO-HD, I think the NBC feed is a little soft PQ wise.

I have the Digital-Premium Pkg, the HD channels added about 9.95 to my tab.

Thanks. I'm waiting for them to deploy the 6200 boxes, as I need FireWire capability in order to timeshift. When I called them this afternoon, I was told they could get the 6200 for me, but they could not assure me that the FireWire outputs would be functional.

Whats the difference between the 5100's IEEE 1394 Firewire port and the one on the 6200?
I was really jones'in for the HD and didn't want to wait for the 6200 which is supposed to have a DVR included as well, but from what I have read on other sites, it's just a matter of time before they fire-up the rest of the ports on the 5100.
I didn't realize the 5100 had IEEE 1394 outputs; I was told by one of Comcast's CSRs that the 5100 didn't have FireWire ports...only the 6200 series did. Well, congratulations on being one of the first in the area to get HD over cable from Comcast. I've been badgering them for over a year now about them offering it, so I'm relieved to hear that their finally getting their act together.
Mike4HDTV 01-07-04, 07:39 PM I ;live in Weston and Advanced Cable is my cable company. Does anyone know when Advanced Cable will be offering HD? I currently receive HD OTA but I want to get ESPN HD without going to Directv.
TC_Lauderdale 01-07-04, 11:45 PM Thanks Rudy1, that means a lot coming from you as I can see by the number of posts, you are an HD veteran.
Actually the Comcast installer was jealous of me due to the fact she lives in Hollywood which has not been upgraded (she actually said it may be quite a while till it is). She said that they have been going solid round the clock on new HD installs and Comcast hasn't actually publicized the fact that HD is readily available in the various cities in South FLA, otherwise, she said they would be swamped with orders. She was surprised that I and others learned about it so quickly. All I can say is Thank you to the members of this forum for keeping us informed!
Are you planning on ordering the service Rudy1?
I fully intend to do so as soon as possible. I have no problem receiving the OTA channels with my current equipment, but it would be nice to have access to the movie channels as well.
jplumey 01-08-04, 01:53 PM I live in Tamarac. I'll be getting HD on Monday morning. You were right. They still haven't advertised any and the sales people are swamped. Any info on the box?

The box I received in Plantation/Fort Lauderdale was the Motorola DTC 5100.

I have heard it's not going to be activated for a while, here is a thread on the 5100 box:

Chuck,
We do plan to pass FOX widescreen in an upconverted format @ 720p 16x9. The equipment is on order an should be on air in a few weeks hopefully. Thanks for your interest.
John
This is great news....thanks for sharing it with us.
acesk8er 01-10-04, 10:26 PM I wonder what WSVN's schedule is for building out their CP for 145 kW - that should improve my reception of Jackie Johnson's AM weather report ;-)
