just went to hhgregg. salesperson had no clue. it was the 52hmx94 for $1697. whats the diff between hm and hmx models? set looked okay in the store but didnt blow me away. what am i missing out on compared to a newer model or say a mitsu or hitachi in the same size dlp?
First off let's know that $1700 for the 52HMX95 is a SUPER deal. The differences bewteen it and the HM95 are:
HMX is black, HM is silver
HMX has VGA input, HM don't
HMX has THINC (PC ethernet port), HM don't
HMX has Virtual Dolby Surround, HM don't
If the set is indeed black and is not anything other than the HMX95, jump on it!

UH OH!!!
I just noticed your comments were based on the 52HMX94, not the 95 series. Sorry I wasted your time, I'm not up on the 94 series too well. But most likely it sports nearly all the same features as the 95 possibly with the exception of the THINC port. It also has what folks here claim to be a better DLP processing chip, the HD2+, instead of the newer HD4 found in the HMX95 series.

sorry had to edit my post. it is the hmx94. it is the grey set not the black. still a good deal/set? after i adjusted some of the settings i seemed to make the picture much better. they had no model number by the tv, just what the salesperson said. googled the hmx94 and it looked just like the one i saw on display.

I got my 52HM95 from a B?M store. I paid 1850 delivered and got the 350 dollar stand for 230 bucks delivered. I strongly advise going to a real store vs the internet. Not only are returns easier but the service plans are backed from a real store in your town, not a plan over the net with special terms and conditions. I got 15 months zero % financing, and I don't even have to make a payment until Jan 07. The 84 series sets are only like 100 bucks cheaper but they are running low on stock.

Does anyone know if the original bulbs on these units could have been defective? I've had my unit 13 months (out of warranty by 32 days), but the owner's manual states approximately 8,000 hrs on LOW POWER and 6,000 hrs on HI BRIGHT. This unit has been used maybe 3,000 hrs. Has anyone else had this problem?

I've just talked with a local HD repair shop and they stated that that seemed quite early for a lamp to fail. They also mentioned that those lamps are hard to get and that they've always had to go through Toshiba dirrectly to acquire them.

Just wondering!

Bamamusicfan
Huntsville, AL

My bulb has blown out under almost identical circumstances. I think I've logged only around 2000 hours on mine at the low power setting in just over a year. It is very discouraging if bulbs routinely run out in this short amount of time, thus requiring an annual $200 expenditure.

The fine print of my extended warranty says it does not cover routine service or upkeep, but I plan to contend that replacing a prematurely burnt out and possibly defenctive bulb is not routine. I'll see where that argument takes me.

Has anyone had any luck on getting a bulb replaced under an extended warranty that doesn't expressly cover bulb replacement? Also, does anyone know if these things are even in stock yet?

Thanks for the help!

If you paid for that set using a Visa/Mastercard there is a chance that they have doubled your original manufacturer's warranty. If that be the case, Toshiba warrants the bulb for one year, meaning you could have 2 year replacement coverage now. Check with your credit card Co. if this could be the case.

Other than waiting for the TV Guide to update all sounds good. Did Toshiba give you instructions to return the SD card? Have you checked to see if the firmware is still on the card? I'm pretty sure Mitsubishi forces you to sign and return an agreement prior to sending out their firmware update. You have to return the SD card and lastly, the firmware deletes itself after installation.
PS.. keep us informed on the TV Guide thingy.
I've received a few updates from Toshiba for my set. They do not require you to return the SD cards and the firmware does not get deleted. Anyone with a SD card reader can copy the firmware to their PC. I currently have the last three or four versions but you cannot flash back to older versions.

Nice to know that you have the firmware on file/SD for backup if things go bad. But it's ashame there is no going back to a previous firmware. Maybe if you took one of the SD cards and could edit the firmware to be defunt, then it may take an older version. But who wants to take that chance?

Hey WMarkW....I printed out the manual for the remote from comcast and it listed a few Toshiba codes that worked to power up and down the TV. That and the volume adjustment is all she needs since she uses the DVR for everything else.

Here is the link...

http://www.comcast.com/remotes/

Cool Thanks. Actually my problem is that the remote for the Toshiba TV does not have a code for my comcast moto box. Frustrating as hell....I have like 5 remotes lined up on my coffee table.

Question for you guys that have had a Toshiba DLP for a while

I hooked up the optical out to my receiver and on certain channels I'm getting closed captioning... I turn it off, but about 10 seconds later it's back, and when I go back to the menu it has changed to english... i turn it off again, and it just keeps coming back on...

I want the dolby digital from HD broadcasts, but don't want the CC...

any way to fix this?

To overcome the plethora of remotes inhabiting my coffee table (6 at last count) I decided to go to a universal remote. The first try was the URC 650 Omega. I found it complex and difficult to set macros so it would operate the appropriate equipment combinations (TV or DVD or Radio, etc). I switched to the Harmony 880 and haven't looked back. I now have one remote and it is incredibly easy to operate. Check it out...

Hey guys I recently got the 46HM94, and I wanted to know what you guys keep your picture settings at. Should the video game picture settings be the same as the movie and regular TV picture setting? Thanks. Oh and another thing when I watch the TV in total darkness i notice a lighter spot on the upper right corner of the screen. It makes the screen appear greyish on the upper righthand corner and more blackish for the rest of the screen. Is this normal or is it a problem with the TV. Personally it doesn't bother me but I want to know if this is a problem with the TV.

I just placed my order for a 52HMX95 by making "OneCall." They gave me what I feel to be one heck of a deal with a 3yr extended warranty to boot. The sales guy, Ralph, was eager to please and very courteous. Now I have to wait till the end of next week to see if the TV is nearly as nice as my purchasing experience. Unless I get carried away with set-up and tweaking, I should let you folks know how it looks and such.

I just picked up the 62HMX95 with the matching stand. The unit is killer but I have a problem. I also purchased a new sound system with it. I got a Paradigm center channel which now leaves me with a problem. The speaker weighs 30 pounds, and doesn't fit in the stand. Has anyone put some kind of shelving on top of the TV that can accomodate this type of speaker?

If anyone has any ideas, I'd sure like to hear them.

If you own your place or can get by with holes in the wall, I'm pretty sure you can buy an inexpensive shelf of some effect at Home Depot/Lowes that can used. Pick out a shelf, anchor it to the studs or use toggle bolts through the sheetrock.

I got a bracketless shelf at Ikea... they look nice, but with the weight of my center channel I opted to pick up a set of nice black brackets to brace it... it's worked extremely well for me... and if you have a wife or girlfriend it leaves enough room that they can put some nick nacks or fake flowers or something up there to make it look "liveable"... ;)

I think it was like $30 for the shelf and a couple of bucks for the brackets... I tied into a stud and used anchors for the rest of the holes...

Hi all.

After returning my Mits 62627, I brought home a Tosh 62HM195 yesterday. I will be using it for:

20% DVD
30% HD (I hope)
30% SD
20% X-box 360 (when available)

At the moment, everything is hooked up through component. I haven't had alot of time to play with it yet but here are my inital impressions.

The Good: The picture is beautiful. Good color saturation, excellent detail in dimly lit scenes. And what's really, really nice is that most of my digital SD signals look really good. Comparable to DVD, in my opinion. This was not the case w/ the Mits where the same SD signal looked grainy and generally bad. High def material obviously looks fantastic.

The TV also turns on relatively quickly (compared to the Mits, at least). I don't know how fast it changes channels b/c I'm using a Comcast box.

The Bad: I seem to have some faint lines running across the screen. They look sort of like noise in the signal but I've seen them on my DVD as well as cable inputs so I know its not the source. They're barely noticeable - just enough to be mildly irritating. And they're only noticeable in scenes with little movement and alot of solid color. Maybe AC line noise?

The remote isn't too great but I don't care b/c I was going to use my universal remote anyway.

Considering how cheaply I got this TV, I'm pretty happy with it. I only wonder if I should have boughten the 72".

Shoot me any questions you may have. I will try to answer them as best I can. Remember, I've only had this TV for 15 hours.

Hi,

I just bought a 52hmx84 and love the tv! However, I noticed there are a few spots on the TV where the picture doesn't display so they show as black blotches on the screen. Is this a known problem with these TVs? Does the warranty cover the problem? Is it a screen flaw?

Thanks!!!

Price: $34.99 It's been reported that the OmniMount will not work with the Toshiba display due to the slope of the back of the set. ;) Other than the suggestion to add a shelf others have used a 13" TV mount for adding the center and it can be swiveled into the proper position above the set.

I think this is one that another poster used.

Sounds to me like you have a warranty issue. I'm not an expert by far on the technology but my guess is there is something on the mirrors or backside of the screen.

First rate, maybe so according to folks here and resellerratings.com. But they have made me question them a tad but I'm not concerned yet. I placed my order and @ 5PM the next eve they called and had lost my visa card number. After giving it to them again I asked if this was going to delay the shipment, he replied no. An hour or so later they called yet again and asked for a order confirmation number that was given to me when originally placing the order. Are they really that disorganized? Or were they simply checking out my contact numbers as they called me both at work and at home. In the end it will all come down to did I get what I ordered on time.

I would strongly advise against giving confidential info to someone who calls you. It is good practice to get their name and phone number and then call the company 800 number and explain you're concerned about information security and ask why they don't have the number you provided when ordring.

In my younger days this happened to me and by the time I called the company it was too late. They had never called and the other caller charged on my account.

Why risk financial exposure because of someone elses disorganization?

Hope it works out ok.

I agree fully. Voice recognition was the thing that allowed me to give out this info. If it would had been anyone other than the same voice I had spoke to the day before I would have returned their call to give them the info. But too, Visa would work things out if I had fraudulent charges.

I'm looking for a little info from other Toshiba owners about UPS's. I live in an area with frequent weather caused power issues and worry about cooling the lamp if the power goes out while my 52hm84 is on. Most UPS's are targeted at computers. Whats everybody else use to protect their DLP?

Also the picture on the TV cuts off the top 1/2" and needs to be adjusted downward. I looked through the standard onscreen menu but didn't see anything to correct it. Do I have to get into the service menu to fix this?

Finally what do you have to do to get that great $99 deal on the new TV's? Who do you contact?

Thanks for everybody's input.

Hello UofAZCats:

About the UPS, add up all the things you want to protect in your home theater and get one with voltage regulation that gives you the total plus a few WATTS over, so it doesn't get overloaded.

APC or TrippLite make reliable units, including some specifically for home theaters, although any known brand model that covers your total is fine. Computer and electronic stores put them on sale every week.

OK. This is for all of you that are looking for lamps. The listing in the owners manual is a TB25-LMP. However, it is cross-referenced in several places (including Toshiba's website) as 23311083, 23311083X, and 23587201. You can do a search against those numbers. For the most part, there are 2 basic prices across several suppliers. One being $269.95 and the other being $199.00. Believe it or not, the Toshiba site is one of the lower priced ones. Several have them in stock. I'm planning on picking up a spare to keep on hand. My set is a year old next month and has about 2700 hours on it. I'm not taking chances during football season.

Do you have any of the names of the retailers that have the bulbs in stock for $199? My bulb just blew and I ordered a replacement from Toshiba for $199(www.ceaccessories.toshiba.com) but it seems like they are backordered until the end of time. I could only find the $269 price elsewhere on the internet. I'd try to cancel my order and get one from somewhere else if I could get it quicker. Thanks.

Hi,

After reading dozens of reviews and thousands of forum posts, I've basically decided to go with a 52" Toshiba DLP. I am having trouble figuring out exactly what the differences between the various models are, though. As far as I can tell there are four choices, 52HM95, 52HMX95, 52HM84, and 52HMX84.

What are the differences between the four? Are there other models I should be considering?

There are plenty of posts here that will decipher the specifics if you do a search on it. The basics are like this...the 84's are last yrs models. Last yr they used the mustang chip dmd called HD2+ this year its a wobulated HD4. Its a debate which ones better. I own the 52hm95 and the picture is awesome! Last years 52hm84 had only one HDMI and the 52hmx84 had two. Last yrs 52hm84 had a grey bezel and the 52hmx84 had black. Beyond that it was little sh*t stuff like 6 feature remote vs. 4 . Neither the 84's had a tuner. If I was in search for last yrs model I would look for the 94's which had the tuners and memory card slots in case you needed a flash fix.

Now the new ones...I bought the 52HM95 and would recommend it! It has all the features of last yrs 94 for the exception of the DMD which is HD4 again it doesn't matter to my eyes. It looks great! The 52hmx95 differs by being all black, having an ethernet connection called THINCNET or something like that and I am pretty sure it has a VGA connection to use a monitor as well. None of those features were of interest to me since my primary use is a TV.

Both have 2 HDMI and CableCard slots, Tuners and Memory slots. Those were the options for me.

Hope this helps !

The biggest difference between the HM95 and HMX95 to my recollection are:

The HMX has a black case (vs silver HM95), THINC ethernet port, Virtual Dolby Surround and a VGA port whereas the HM95 does not have these features. As for the HM84 vs the HMX84, the feature sets should be similar but most likely even the HMX is lacking the new THINC port & possibly the VGA as well "?". The newer 95 models use the newer HD4 DLP chip and the older 84 models probably use the HD2+ chip.

Sorry I didn't have time to go to Toshiba's website and do this comparison properly for you.

Burmp, wrong... Yes the models in question to have similar features but they also have differences. If you go to Toshiba's website and print out the spec sheets on the models he has referred to, you'll see differences.

I should have my 62hm195 by Friday. I am not a videophile or anything close. But I will give my honest opinion when I have it hooked up. I still don't understand all the differences in DLP,LCD or LCoS. It seems a matter of opinion on every forum I could find. Everyone said theirs is the best. Gee, there's an honest opinion. I will let my eyes be the judge again. The thing that amazes and bothers me is the sneaky way the stores try to make one TV look better then the other by sending certain signals to the set they are pushing. I have always been a Sony person but quality over the years has suffered. Samsung IMO seems like the VW beetle. There are 1000's out there because they are cheap. Toshiba I have always herad and seen good things from. So this is my 1st Toshiba. I hope it will last as long as my old JVC 36' tube that was bought in 95 and still going strong.

Are you (and others) aware that these sets (and the Mits) should get the power hog of the year award?
BOTH use between .5 and .6 amps (60-70 watts) when OFF and between 2.5 and 2.8 amps when on!

I just got a 62HM94. I'm trying to figure out how you can tell what signal is being sent to the TV. I want to know if it is receiving a 720p/480i/480p etc. Is there a way to get the TV to display this? I know other TVs do it.

After reading ALL the posts in this thread I figured the 52hm84 fit my needs and price range. The TV was delivered this morning. I plugged it in and worked great...until the delivery truck drove away. The TV started shutting off on its own and then gave me the LED light combo saying the lamp door was not on correctly....went through the steps as detailed in the instructions and the situation did not improve...then removed the lamp and placed back in....still no help...now the tv doesn't turn on at all....very dissappointing after a 3 week wait to receive the TV

dissappointing, yes, end of the world no... ;)

it's a warranty issue... all items (cars, tvs, lawnmowers, etc.) can have defects... sorry you got a bad one... :(

Anyone have the 62hm15 from Costco? I am looking at that one and was wondering if anyone has it. Any feedback would be great. Thanks.

Yeah, it's very nice. Prob a little too big, but it just looked too nice there in that warehouse.

Only things I don’t like are when changing channels and the format changes (4:3 to 16:9 or vice versa) you get a very brief image, then black screen, then some crazy lines, and then the picture.
The audio has been a little “crackly” but I think that’s Comcast’s Motorola STB.

Now to get the audio hooked up and take a run through AVIA, and any opinions on if I should setup this crazy TV guide stuff? At least I need to take off that crooked bright red sticker :( . You think they wouldn’t be so annoying with a $3000 TV.

Don't you hate that feeling? Everything is going perfect when all of a sudden it goes bad, FAST. You get this funny feeling in your stomach that makes you sick.

Sounds like the bulb door may have a switch that lets the set know it is open or closed. If this is the case the switch may be bad.

I had the same feeling this eve myself. I built a new home this year and just today had to turn the heat on for the 1st time since start-up. Well guess what, it didn't work. Same issue it suffered from in the initial start-up. Good thing I was there to learn from the serice guy back then. Otherwise it would be 50 F in here right now. Worse than that.. I tried the 2nd central air unit for the basement. I heard a pop come from the unit. After dismanteling it I found a blown fuse and a transformer extremely hot, smoking, and of course with a burnt smell coming from it. It is surely dead. Thank goodness the main unit is back up for now.

VideoBruce, no I was not aware of that! That seems completely unnecessary.

I returned the Mits (WD-62627) b/c when viewing night scenes or low-light scenes, the picture went completely black with NO detail at all. One example is the Hulk DVD where Hulk is fighting the dogs at night. I could not see ANYTHING at all, no matter how much I adjusted the TV (spent several hours doing this). After observing this problem with multiple movies via both HD HBO and DVD, I decided there's no way I'm paying $3000+ for a TV that handles dark scenes so poorly. I checked out the 62628 before buying my Toshiba. The 62628 did a little better but not good enough, IMO. The Toshiba does very well with this.

Could someone please explain why one fan is always on? What is it cooling? What would happen if you cut the power to the set 6 hours after watching it? Why didn't they just put a sensor on it to have it go on if the temp is too high?

Does not bother me but it seems like a waste of electricity.

If the fan is ALWAYS on, even 6 hours after you shut the tv down, there is a problem with your tv !

Mine stays on for about 2 minutes and then shuts off. And that's the way it should work.

One fan comes on when you power up the TV and I assume this is the lamp fan. After you shut the TV off that fan goes off after a few minutes but then there is a faint sounding fan which seems to run all the time.

I have heard that there is a fan to cool the cable card which may always stay on but I don't yet have the CC installed.

I'll look into it.

As mentioned by others, each set varies so the settings on one may look horrid on another. Currently for component input from DVD player are;

Color Temperature: Medium
High/Low Lamp Mode (depending on ambient light)
Contrast 45
Brightness 43
Color 40
Tint -17
Sharpness 0

As you can see, the tint setting is quite different for me as opposed to others, but I can assure you that if I center it at "0" my color is off by a mile. Likewise, contrast at anything above 45 crushes whites big time on my set and will pretty much blind me any time a scene changes from dark to light quickly. I've tried higher color saturation and got an image that was too far from accurate for my taste. Brightness varies a bit with material but most recently I've found this to be a happy medium. Sharpness is off on all of my inputs. I find it to add ringing and reduce the accuracy of the image. I've experimented with a buch of different settings over the months I've had this set, slowly making improvements to image quality and I'm sure I'll change them more down the road.

Several inquiries directed to Toshiba have resulted in the same response. It runs constantly and can't be stopped. It is designed for cooling the area near the cable card. Not sure why the need for constant cooling when not in use.

I am running the audio from the same DVD player to my Denon 3801 receiver through an optical feed. The Denon can display information, i.e., speaker db levels, etc., on-screen and I used to be able to feed that easily to my Sony CRT TV through an s-video link. I tried hooking an s-video link the same way from the Denon to the "Video 1" s-video input on the 62HM. After doing this and selecting/activating the Video 1 input, I cannot get anything but black to display on the Toshiba screen. Any suggestions?

The Adelphia cable guy came out yesterday to install the SA cablecard. Install was not a success because he could not get the TV to change channels. He made several calls and nothing worked.

So he left my house and told me he'd call me this morning. Well, I went through the menu's on the TV and found out I had to do a new install because the TV thought it was still using the old STB. I did this and everything worked!

This morning rolls around and the CC still works, to some degree anyway. I get A/V on all non HD stations and only Video on the HD stations with no Audio.

Called Adelphia and they send a signal to me but it does not work. Seems like everytime I talk to someone from Adelphia they tell me to ditch the CC. Is this because they want more $$ from me??

Any ideas on how to resolve the HD audio issues? I removed the CC but it did not fix the problem.

btw- Watched LOTR last night using the new Tosh SD5980. Great picture!

Thanks in advance.

Their current business model recognizes a significant revenue stream from STB leases. Cablecards are cheaper and bring in less $$$. Rather than fight the tide, wouldn't it be nice if cable companies were focused on bringing more consumer valued material, like HD programming, to the customer? Comcast is scheduled to install mine tomorrow. I called twice and both times they displayed a negative bias towards the cards. Wonder how they'd be reacting if the cards brought in a higher margin than STB's???

HDMI ISSUE?
I have a 95 series Toshiba with 2 HDMI connections. I have the Moto box into one of the connections via DVI/HDMI. I connected my Sony 400 DVD player into the second connection with HDMI to HDMI. Then I connected a single play DVD via component into one of the component connections.
PROBLEM
Both HDMI connections work fine until I use the single DVD with component connection and then try to go back to the Moto box with the DVI/HDMI attachment. At this point I only get audio at that HDMI connection, not video. If I turn on the Sony 400 (second HDMI connection) I can usually then flip back to the Moto and the video works.
Question
Is this possibly a problem with the HDCP handoff? Anyone else have a problem with this quark?

The replacement fan(s) were not availablefrom Toshiba in a reasonable timeframe, so the company is shipping me a new 62HM195. I delayed the shipping because of Hurricane Wilma and thus have not received it yet. We are still without power anyway.

What TV and version of firmware do you have? I had a problem once with my CC but it was no video, just audio on the digital channels and had to do a complete reset of the TV to correct it.

Bit of an update here. I reconnected the STB and did the TVGOS install again and all channels had audio and video.

Then I disconnected the STB and had only the CC in and then did the TVGOS install once again so that the TV would not think I was still using the STB.

Low and behold everything works! Audio and Video on all channels.

But now I have another issue I can't figure out. When I have the DVD player connected via hdmi to TV and then optical cable from DVD to AVR I can watch movies in full Dolby 5.1 but I can't get dolby when watching cable with the AVR connected to the TV via audio out from TV to audio in on the AVR.

But if I connect the DVD to the TV using HDMI and then the audio out from the DVD to the audio IN on the TV and then use the optical cable to connect the AVR to the TV directly I get Dolby 5.1 on cable but not using the DVD player.

Seems like I can only have Dolby 5.1 delivered via one source (either Cable OR DVD) and not both.

Watched LOTR 1 and 2 this weekend. This set really rocks!!!!

Hey guys, basically I've decided on the 46HMX85. I was going to go with the 52" but because of the size of the room it's going in, and also the pricepoint on the 46", it suits me a bit better. I'm looking at roughly $2500CAD with stand and taxes included. I feel that's a pretty good price. Now I'm just wondering if I should go with an extended warranty for ~400CAD. Is it worth it to be covered for the 5 years, or would double manufacturers warranty do me just fine? (Purchasing it with a Visa where I get double manufacturers warranty on any item purchased..)

Any advise on if the warranty is worth it would be great

Thanks Jim. I have been just pressing the "Test Tone" button on the remote to get the OSD for the speaker sound levels to show up on the Toshiba but that of course hasn't worked. I'll take a look at my remote and see about turning on the OSD in the menu on the receiver....that is a great idea. If that doesn't work, then I might try re-initializing the receiver by unplugging it. Are you able to get your OSD to work acceptably with the Denon 3801?

I've had my 62hm195 for a week now and just wanted to share some thoughts. I, unfortunately see the "rainbow effect" on this DLP set, never noticed it before on the showroom floor. Its not constant but see color vertical lines on occasion when I blink or change channels, very annoying. I've had 2 problems w/ the tv so far .
I turned on the set other day and noticed the end 2 inches on the right side of set was messed up w/ a green line going vertical from top to bottom. I was displaying it in natural mode w/ analog satellite source. I stretched the display to theater 1 mode and then back to natural mode and it fixed the problem.
Second problem I had kinda scared me since set is only a week old. I turned on the set and the screen was red and rolled horizontally. I changed channels, inputs(didn't have same problem on other inputs), etc. I turned off set and back on and still had same problem. Turned off set a second time and then back on and fixed problem.
Only other complaint is the extremely loud fan when on. I understand all DLP's have this fun with some being louder than others, but this thing is crazy loud. Its even louder than my computer thats in same room.
With that being said, I'm still happy with my purchase. The HD content is night and day better than my old Tosh 65x81. My wife and I are in constant awe when watching HD programs.
Has anyone else experienced problems like mine? I currently have a Directv HD tivo unit that I had connected to my old set with no problems. I'm also wondering if other people that experience the "rainbow effect" on these sets, can overcome this slight annoyance?
Sorry this was so long, just wanted to add my week long experience>

I've had my Toshiba 62 HM 195 for about a month and I haven't noticed any rainbow effect or the other problems that you have described. (I also have DirectTV HD TIVO which is awesome). I haven't noticed any fan noise either even with the sound off but then again I haven't been listening for that kind of problem.
Since I previously stated that I would post my review of the 62HM 195 I'll use this reply as my personal review.
I must say that I am in constant awe of the PQ of this set in HD. The contrast, depth of color and sharpness of detail has been awesome in HD. Sports, movies, widlife, animation, etc.., every kind of HD program has been sheer enjoyment. I have recorded certain sporting events and Discovery channel programs on the HD TIVO to show our guests and got the WOW response every time.
When I first got the Toshiba I was somewhat dissapointed with many of the DVD's that I tested. My highest resolution is 480p from a progressive scan player that's a few years old. Certain DVD's such as "Winged Migration" were awesome, however, and really showed me that this Toshiba had real potential. After a couple of weeks I had Direct TV out to set up the HD satelite and OTA antenna. WOW what a difference the 1080 signal makes vs 480p from DVD players. Eventually I'll upgrade to a higher capacity DVD player or perhaps Blueray but I'm in no hurry. I'll just have to be more patient in waiting for more programing coming over to HD but at least with the HD TIVO unit it gives me more stored prorams for slower non-sports days. Anyway, I'm not an HDTV techie like most on this forum, but I am a PQ afficiando and am very happy with the 62 HM 195.

First I must say.... WOW, but I have very lil grounds right now to say that. I received my 52HMX95 last Friday and truthfully have spent very lil time with it. However with a good 1080i or even 720P input the set looks super. On the contrare, SD 480i input looks good to horrible depending on the cable channel. I have not had time to tweak the PQ to my liking but it's good as is. It suffers from a touch of black crush and the red push. I've tuned down the red push but haven't gotten to the black level adjustments. My other issue which will soon be fixed is the audio/video sync issue. Right now I'm still using an early 90's model 5.1 receiver that does not have any type of delays for audio. My Harman Kardon 335 will be here tomorrow or Wed and should fix this. Other than the black scale adjustment needed and the audio syncing the biggest complaint...... The "F"ing learning curve. Was life easier with SD TV and no set top box?.... DUH.. of course. I bet I've had to introduce myself to 5 new remotes this weekend. My old receiver remote, DVD remote, HDTV remote, set top box cable converter remote.. too darn many remotes. I can't wait to get this thing dialed in so that I can concentrate on IR codes hopefully dropping things down to maybe 2 or less remotes.
Now to go find the posts again talking about how to get into the cal menu using the mute button.

Thanks to all whose posts here talked me into this beautiful HDTV.

I too have had my 72HM195 for several days and have no serious complaints other than the fan noise. The room is on the large side with hardwood floors so you can more or less hear a pin drop. With the TV off, how far away can you hear the fan on your set?

The shock and awe factor is up there with the best of them. The neighbors came over last night with their 2 year old and the baby could not take her eyes off the TV. Forget about giving the dog some attention she went straight for the TV with eyes open like saucers.

HD content looks simply unbelievable! Good quality DVD's look great and so far I have noticed a huge improvement with the Cablecard vs. the STB on the SD channels.

One question I have for everyone is audio setting. Typically what level is your audio at when watching tv through the TV only? I think mine is up in the 25 range which seems extremely high compared to my Hitachi which at level 3 or 4 it was extremely loud.

I changed channels, inputs(didn't have same problem on other inputs), etc. I turned off set and back on and still had same problem. Turned off set a second time and then back on and fixed problem.
<snip>

What input are you using to feed the DirecTivo into your set? I'm using the HDMI feed into the 56HM195 I've had for just over a week and I haven't seen the problems you describe above. Also, assuming you're using component or HDMI, what resolution are you sending out of the HD DirecTivo? I'm viewing 1080i and the picture looks beautiful.

I too have had my 72HM195 for several days and have no serious complaints other than the fan noise. The room is on the large side with hardwood floors so you can more or less hear a pin drop.

The shock and awe factor is up there with the best of them.

Good quality DVD's look great and so far I have noticed a huge improvement with the Cablecard vs. the STB on the SD channels.

One question I have for everyone is audio setting. Typically what level is your audio at when watching tv through the TV only? I think mine is up in the 25 range which seems extremely high compared to my Hitachi which at level 3 or 4 it was extremely loud.

jumpinjoe,

I have the 52HMX95 in a room that's 15' x 20' carpeted. My fan noise is very quiet so much so that when the set is off you barely can hear the fan without getting down in the floor next to the set. Maybe the carpet helps dampen the noise.

Awe factor... darn tootin'. I'm still trying to overcome the sheer size going from a 30" to a 52", I keep wanting to back up against the far wall to get away from the set.

CC vs STB: Which STB did you previously own? Does the TV Program Guide work thru the CC? I just went and picked up a STB yesterday and I hate having to use it. Another remote and another programmming guide to learn not to mention me cable Co. Brighthouse/Time Warner gave my no instructions on the STB whatsoever.

Lastly, sound volume level: I find us running ours around 30 - 35, maybe a bit higher than yours due to the carpet again dampening sound.

rbbnet,

Thanks for the reply. The STB is a SA model but I don't know the #'s on it. Only connection available is component since DVI on the back is not operable.

Yes, the TVGOS works with the CC (SA) but the only thing missing when using the CC is the "info" button.

I had to do some trouble shooting with the CC and went back and forth a few times with the STB and could notice a difference between the two especially on the SD channels. Could be the hardware or possibly the service itself.

When watching HD sporting events I just can't image a better picture from any other product on the market. How could it get any better? And why don't A/V stores have all the TV's shoing HD content on display rather than DVD's?

probably because it allows one less digital ---> analog conversion... should help things look a bit nicer...

Maybe I should reconsider and look into the CC instead of the SA Explorer 3250HD STB my cable Company gave me. I've read of many CC issues but always thought it would have to be easier to use. As of right now I'm pretty sure my family can't even figure out how to make this TV work due to having to turn on the TV, the STB, the receiver and then set the TV to the proper input, then lastly choose a station with the STB. Heck it confused me and I'm pretty decent at weeding my way through that kind of thing.

If the CC could make it perform as if there were no other add-ons, simply turn the TV on and choose your station, the only thing left would be to start the stereo receiver and that isn't even necessary to have sound.

Plainly put, my 3 yr old loves the "big TV" but can't use it to save her life. If she could push the on button and flip channels, we would be happier.

rbbnet,

Having a CC definitely simplifies things quite a bit. I have a universal remote which I will program this weekend. I used it for my old set up and it does a great job for everything.

Since you also run an AVR, are you able to get Dolby out of it with BOTH DVD's and Cable (when Dolby channels are available)?

For some reason I can only get one or the other depending on configuration but I can't get both. Likely just a configuration issue so I'm curious to hear what you have connected to what to make it work.

I'm using the component1 input and am using the 1080i format and Directv Tivo unit. I heard the HDMI connection on the HD Tivo is failing on alot on these units so I dont know if I'll get an HDMI cord for it.

Hello Guys
My first post on the forum, I have been reading quite a bit on the 1080p TV’s.
Today I ordered the 62hm195, hopefully I made the right decision adding 3 year extended warranty. Which covers bulb replacement, new replacement if cannot be repaired.
I pretty good with streaming video and pictures will do both upon arrival of my TV.
I’m currently rebuilding my entire home entertainment system.
Old system:
KP Sony 52 Digital Projection TV
Kenwood VR-3080
HTPS-7000
Klipsch Reference 2 System
SVS 16 Plus Sub
Sony DVD Player
XBOX
Panasonic FZ-1

New Components:
Toshiba 62hm195
Pioneer VSX-74TXVi
Buttkicker LFE Kit w/ Second Transducer

If anyone is interested in where I purchased the unit and price let me know. I tried to give TVA the opportunity to sell me the 62hm195. Unfortunately with delivery and adding the 3-year full replacement/bulb warranty the difference was still $40 between both companies.

Addition:
Company says in stock will ship tomorrow.

Audio is my big issue right now along with too many darn remotes. It seems like when I hooked up the STB yesterday I ran the audio out on it to my 5.1 surround system. A/V sync was horrible, like watching an old Kung Fu flic, hear voices then lips move. I rearranged things so the audio left the STB and entered the TV. Then out of the TV to the surround receiver. I can't remember if things got worse or better but it was still off. My receiver I'm using right now is from a stereo purchased in the early 90's so it doesn't offer much in the way of correction. I do expect a Harman Kardon to arrive today or tomorrow that can fix this.

I had the audio from my DVD player ran to my receiver only so I didn't have any issues of losing sound at all, just neither were sync'ed with the video. I do recall under one setup, can't remember which, the audio was very low. Seems like it was when I had the audio being fed through the TV to the receiver.

I'm still in the playing stage trying to figure out what is best. I also have not received my new DVD player, the HK receiver or the subwoofer. So until I get the 1st two items I won't be really ready to play for keeps.

Do you suffer any of the A/V sync issues using the CC?

jumpinjoe
11-01-05, 03:07 PM
I have not had any sync issues at all. And I finally got some help on how to get Dolby playing for both DVD's and Cable. It's as simple as a new cable. So now I'll have the toslink going from DVD to AVR and a digital-coax from TV to AVR and the HDMI from TV to the DVD player and that's it for cables outside of the Xbox going to the TV. Pretty simple set up.

The most sunstantial improvement is with the progressive scan DVD player. My old sony was not up to the task but surprisingly my Sony AVR has done a fine job!

I bet the new AVR you are getting will be night and day above what you were using.

Not only will the new HK receiver be big-time better, but so will the DVD player. Just for shits & grins I purchased a $80 HDMI DVD player from Walmart last weekend. But I have a Panasonic 97 on the way to replace it. The elcheapo DVD player supposedly could upscale and had the HDMI cable included. I figured one of the kids could use the player next week and I could keep the cable. Surprisingly the lil unit fares pretty well in comparison to anything else I have ever seen.
TOSLINK?? Apparently I WILL end up RTFM. ;)

jumpinjoe
11-01-05, 04:00 PM
Toslink is the optical cable which can pass Dolby. Your AVR, DVD and TV all have at least 1 digital output/input.

Believe it or not those cheap HDMI cables are not bad at all. Some experts will say there is no difference since all they do is pass 1's and 0's so if they work then they are doing their job.

Good luck with the new set up! You'll have one sweet sounding system.

I loaded the TV Guide to use with my ant1/analog cable channels. I have a DVR hooked up via component (colorstream). I have noticed that when I turn on the TV in the component input mode, the tv guide comes up. Is there a way to turn it off from popping up automatically when the TV is turned on? Or at least eliminating it from the Colorstream inputs?

So far I do believe that is the consensus. Although I think there aren't too many, possibly only one manufacturer that has real 1080P input, HP. But lastly, the only 1080P input available right now would be from a PC.

Nicholas,

I'm not sure if many have tried it with the Toshiba. Seems like most people who have purchased them did so for the PQ for HD and DVD's, the quality associated with the Toshiba name and of course for the appearance of the TV. Just one guys opinion but the HP falls into the extremely ugly category. But probably a kick A$$ monitor for HTPC enthusiasts.

I finally managed to take a couple of pictures of the new 72hm195 showing some HD content. The first was taken ~34' away without flash and keeping the lights more or less as low as I could get them and still get a picture.

My wife gave me flack because she thought the picture is of a naked woman in the woods. It's the front view of a baby crane's head :)

The 2nd was taken ~18' away with the same lighting.

Cable Card vs STB Update:
BrighHouse cable came out Friday to install my CC. At the time of installation I also had the SA 3250HD STB. The install was exactly what I expected, nothing to it. Although getting it to work properly still hasn't been done. Apparently my cable company has no clue what they need to do to make the thing work. Or it could be possible that the card is bad. The installer spent maybe 2 hours on the phone with the head end to only get part of the card working. Saturday morning they sent out the next guy who also got no where on the project. As it stands part of the channels will display and on occasions the HD channels will not have audio. Only once did the music channels have audio and what they did to make that happens nobody knows and they don't work now. They are going to have to come back out yet again this week to possibly replace the CC again.

Now for the good stuff. Since the CC didn't work properly the installer left me the HD STB as well as the CC. I was able to do a POP, picture in picture comparison between the two. No doubt about it the CC displays a much better pic. It has a good bit more clarity than the STB. Now if we can only get the CC to work properly and to see if the TVGOS will ever populate with the CC.

Hi all,
I bought a Tosh 62HM94 DLP last December 22 (04). I always intended to buy an extended warranty but didn't get around to acting on it until now. Unfortunately it seems you must sign up before the last 90 days of the mfg warranty on all the online programs I can find. The good news is my TV has worked flawlessly from day 1. The bad news is I could kick myself for falling asleep on this issue. Does anyone know of any company that offers extended warranty with only 30 -45 days left on the MFG warranty? Does Toshiba have a program? I couldn't find anything on their website. Thanks for the help.

If by moving field you mean "dancing grass effect" it's not the TV, it's either the network or local affiliate using insufficient compression process.

I suppose the best thing I can do to show the difference in PQ between the CC and the STB would be to take a pic of the two being displayed in POP. Every pic I've seen attached here has always been low Res, is this due to storage contraints and madates from the website or people being dial-up friendly? If I can't attach a high quality pic then it may be difficult to see the difference here. Maybe I won't forget to take a pic this eve.

The above poster is correct regarding artifacts etc. and it always comes down to the quality of the feed. I have found that ESPN, Monday Night Football and Disco HD Theatre have the best quality HD in my region. CBS football in HD leaves a lot to be desired and watching it on a 72" set only magnifies the problems.

RBB- this is the same problem I had with my initial install on the CC. Did you go back and re-configure the TVGOS to let it know you are now using the CC and not the STB?

After I did this a few times it started working and has worked fine since.

Regarding POP - Has anyone tried splitting the cable and having one feed go through CC on ANT1 and the other through the STB through ANT2 to get 2 HD broadcasts using POP? Is this possible? I ask because my cable guy also left me the STB :)

One last question, I see many buying the HMX over the HM. What is your reason for doing so? I think the HMX has the ethernet port so what do you plan on using the port for?

thx,

Joe:

I saw in the manual that POP can't use both ANT inputs, only one ANT and one of the others, like VIDEO1 or HMDI. So if your cable box supports component or HMDI you can use it for POP.

I see from one of your other posts you have Adelphia. Sounds like your TVGOS is working fine. I have Comcast and having sporatic download success. Based on what I've learned on this site I strongly believe Comcast is not consistent in passing the info.

Also, I bought the MX model mainly because the shop I had decided to buy from only sold this model. Looks like Toshiba makes the different models so some of the specialty shops have a distinction in their products over the big box stores. With the discount I got, the price difference was virtually nothing. The ethernet port can be used to send recording programming info or reminders remotely via email to the TV, or share picture or MP3 audio files from a home computer. I doubt I'll use this anytime soon, but who knows.

The Adelphia box has HDMI but the sticker on the back says it's not in use. Oh well.

My TVGOS is working fine but I have not put it through all it's paces by going out several days. I have to read the manual on programming the set up for TVGOS because there must be an easier way to get it looking the way you want it to (channel order) than what I am doing.

Did you buy from CSW? I heard they were starting to carry the Toshiba line. I went to Tweeter several times and they kept telling me they would have them in soon. I became inpatient and ordered on line. Took a chance but it piad off.

Is the C5 in your sig as in C5 Vette?

This is the exact setup or close enough to what I had done to compare the STB to the CC. I may have had the STB outputting to component instead of ANT2. I also split the cable and ran it though a VCR to do POP on the CC and the VCR. Of course the VCR handled the signal poorly. One thing for certain is you CAN NOT split the cable with one line going into ANT1 for the CC and the other into ANT2 for plain cable. Sure you can watch either the CC or the plain 'ol cable, but you CAN NOT do POP with this setup. The built-in tuner apparently can handle only one signal.

If I'm not mistaken the HMX also has a second HDMI port as well as the VGA port. According to the manual the HMX supposedly can be used to view pics and listen to MP3s from your local PC. I haven't delved into that stuff yet but I'm certain I will as I wired the room for my home network way before buying this TV.

As I said, I am sure it's my local cable company throwing out a bad signal.

So does the HMX have 3 HDMI ports? My HM has 2 HDMI ports already.

All of this can be done through the TVGOS channel editor. Also, keep in mind that not ALL channels that you have are supported by TVGOS. The STB connects to the TV through DVI>HDMI and I can get POP using te HDMI input and the ANT1 input. Also, useful for comparing PQ between STB and cable card. I don't notice much difference on HD channels but analog channels are much improved using cable card as opposed to the STB. I just can't do without the dual tuner DVR though so I have both. :D

Good point. I have been turning off channels on my TVGOS and putting those that work in the correct order. And every now and then I find one which didn't map right. I too have a few which are not supported and I was thinking of using one of the "extra" tags on TVGOS for one of those.

If you go into the set up and scroll to the very last channel/tag it will have a dozen or so extra's with no channel/position tag. I'm thinking about using at least one for INHD2 since I use that station quite often.

Are the channels turned on in the TVGOS setup? Are they configured for the correct channel number? My lineup was never 100% correct and I usually had to turn off channels I don't subscribe to and correct channels that had incorrect channel numbers. All of this can be done through the TVGOS channel editor. Also, keep in mind that not ALL channels that you have are supported by TVGOS. For example, INHD2, Oxygen, PBS HD (second channel), VH1 Soul, Sprout, Logo, TV One are just some of the channels that are not supported in my area.

Are they turned on? I suppose you mean does it have a check mark in the box next to the channel? Yes, my channels have checks in the boxes next to them. Not all channels are supported? How do you know what is and what is not supported? All the music channels, not the VH1 or MTV type, but the plain audio channels at one point worked but now they don't. Also at one point all the HD channels had video but no audio. Somehow the audio got corrected when I was doing a side-by-side / POP of the CC and the STB. Audio just started working through the CC. I may very well have a few channels on the upper end that are labeled wrong. For instance the first time I tuned to a particular channel TVGOS had labeled as Oxygen, the screen had the InHD logo at the bottom and my channel guide from the cable co. said that station should have been NBAHD. Needless to say lastnight that same station had a NBA game playing, who knows? My best guess, InHD was doing a freebie and was being broadcast locally over NBAHD due to low volume of games to show on that station. I'm still in the playing and learning stage as anything more than basic cable is all new to me. The cable Co. is scheduled to bring me another CC tomorrow afternoon. Maybe it will fix everything. I do plan to show the cable guy the PQ difference between the CC and the STB.

Not a huge deal. Just one of those things I've always wondered about. I think for hi-res photos you'd want to post a link to a site with lesser constraints against size, as opposed to trying to post them directly into the thread.

For all you folks that have wondered or heard there are differences between the PQ produced by your STB versus your TV's tuner, I've made it easy. I did a quicky test taking a few pics of the STB & CC in a POP screen. Take a look at these four pics and you decide which looks best to you. I'll tell you which side of the POP is from the cable card and which is from the STB later. I don't want to spoil it for you by telling you too soon. There are two SD (standard def) pics and two HD pics to compare. Discerning which side of the POP looks the best is very simple, almost so easy that even a blind man could read it as if it were braille. STB was a SA 3250HD, cable card unknown.

Thanks for taking the time. There is not much question about the difference being visible to the naked eye. Are user adjustables the same for both inputs? If that's the case, I may have to persue CC further.

Manufacturer: Toshiba
Overall Rating: To be Determine
Value Rating: 4.5/5 stars
Review Date: 11-08-05
MSRP: $3699

I have been looking for a TV for a year now. I had my heart set on the Samsung after seeing the picture quality at Tweeter. I decided to go with the Toshiba in the end, based on screen size features and price. I was able to get the 62HM195 for less than the Samsung HL-R5678W, including a 3-year onsite warranty.

Build Quality: 4.5
Overall the Toshiba feels very sturdy, no creaks or flexing when being picked up and moved. Only one exception is the pop out door for CF Media the tag was not quite adhered to the curvature of the door. All component inputs are laid out nicely and feel very sturdy when plugging in connections. Some have reported hearing the fan during operation. At 12 feet away I cannot hear it even during momentary silence. It does run for several minutes after turning the tv off.

User Interface/Remote: 4
Remote is backlight requiring a button to be pushed for the feature. I found OSD very easy to navigate and easy to understand. Dynamic contrast does have a great effect on dark colors.

Detail and Video Quality: Still to be determined

I’m currently replacing my equipment; my DVD player has no progressive scan. OPPO OPDV971H should arrive this week. Did try my Xbox on s-video connection and the games play smoothly and looked fantastic. DVD video played with out a hitch from my xbox. The widescreen modes really help to fix 480i input issues.

CF Media: Inserted Sony Memory Stick, Short duration TV switches to Media View and all images are recognized and displayed.

I have yet to pick up a new receiver, as I quite interested in the HDMI inputs.

Figured I would try the old bunny ears to see how well it tuned in local channels. I’m in a depressed area in between several large almost mountains. Cell pone service is sporadic at best. Comparing to my old Sony auto setup picked up channel I had not been able to in the past, hate paying for locals. Actually has a signal strength meter on the OSD.

Contrast & Black Levels: 4.5
Comparing to my 4-year rear Sony CRT even at 480i is much improved. I also notice very little pixilation in fog set against dark backgrounds.

Color Reproduction: Still to be determined

Calibration Options: Still to be determined

Overall: Still to be determined

Value: Still to be determined

Cobalt Cables Arrived and will try to give impressions on those, between my old Monster Cables.

I had a quick question for you guys -

My brother-in-law just bought a Tosh 62HMX95 and Comcast finally set him up today -

I have a Panny 42" px500u and get better picture quality when the cable box is set to output all HD in 1080i (even though the TV's resolution is 1024 x 768)

I wanted to ask if any of you had played around with the settings on your Moto 6412 STBs.

I would think it would look better if the output was 720p as it matches the TVs native resolution - but as there is more content in 1080i, maybe we're better off letting the TVs scaler do the scaling to 720p?

Thoughts?
Thanks,
Rick

Just something to note. Did you switch the inputs of your TV with cable card / STB? Or, switch the POP windows? I ask, because on my 52HM85, only the left box is capable of displaying a 480p/720p/1080i source. The right POP window is scaled down to 480i regardless of source, hence it will clearly look of lesser quality. Maybe you already know this though and took it into account.

I did not know that before you brought it to my attention. I stand corrected. I did go back and do a POP with STB on the left and the CC right and yes, the left/STB looked the best. I switched back and forth from STB to CC on a full screen and there may be some PQ differences. The CC may be a bit cleaner and sharper but it is very hard to tell.

Thanks for pointing this out. If the forum will allow me to edit or maybe even delete my previous posts I'll fix them.

Is this statement true? So what if you have cable going into Ant 1 (through CC or from STB) and use an OTA for Ant 2? Would you then only get 480i on OTA HD programs?

Perhaps this is one of the differences between the 95 and 195 series whereas the 195 series will do up to 1080i on either input?

Clean lint free cloth and water to dampen it a bit. Some people like the microfiber cloths. No paper towels. No Windex - or any other solvents or abrasives. I bought the Monster cleaner/cloth for $20 once but just because my child had written on screen and I paniced. Not really needed.

You are better off letting the TV do scaling so leave STB at 1080i most of the time. Sometimes when watching a game that is broadcast at 720P I will take the time to change STB to 720P and then switch it back after game. I think it helps a bit w/ handling all the motion.

On my 52HMX95 both ANT1 and ANT2 can handle up to 1080i inputs. However when doing POP only the left side can display 1080i and the right is limited to 480i (I Think).

I actually did a cable split. One side of the splitter went into ANT1 for use with the CableCard enabling HD channels, the other side went to my VCR and then out of it to the TV. This would give me POP in HD via CC and the VCR could change channels for standard basic cable.

First, when switching between a HD and a regular channel we had the "Pic Size" on the TV set to Natural and it would automatically switch b/n widescreen and the standard TV format. Now, when we switch between formats it always puts the standard channels in "Full" mode. We can switch it back to Natural, but that's getting annoying. Any ideas how we can get the Natural setting to stick permanently? I've already checked our DirectTV box and the settings seem correct in it...

Second, when we turn the TV off the green light flashes and you can hear the fan, which I believe is normal. The question I have is should the length the fan runs be in proportion to how long the TV is on? I've noticed that the fan may only stay on for 1 or 2 seconds after we turn the TV off when the TV has been on for a couple of hours. However, the fan may stay on for a couple of minutes and the TV may only have been on for 10 minutes. It seems very random. Is this normal? It doesn't seem right to me...

Thanks for your help!

I purchased a 46HMX85 back in Sept and the first one died on me after one month. The screen kept getting dimmer and dimmer then the it made a popping sound that eventually lead to no image. I got a replacement and the same thing happened again after another 2 months! I'm so pissed off right now. Gonna see if futureshop will let me exchange it for a Samsung Plasma.

The set should stay in standby (green flashes) mode for approximately 5 minutes regardless of viewing time. One fan runs 24/7 and should never shut off. Listen at the back of the set for it. The pic mode for SD channels should default to whatever you were last using on SD channels. Keep in mind this follows from one input to another. If I watch DVD through component input (4) at "full", then switch to cable box component input (5), all SD channels show as "full".

Hey everyone. New to the forum (longtime lurker). Everyone's review on the Toshiba's sets were very helpful when I went shopping for a TV. Ended up picking the 46" Toshiba (46HM95). I've only had it a couple days but I like it a lot. There are a couple quirks that I'm going to have to get used to, and the remote is a bit cumbersome, but otherwise its a great TV. I have it currently hooked up via component from a Cablevision 4200HD box. The HD channels look pretty good, most notably the INHD.

I do have a couple of questions that I haven't been able to find the answers to in this vast thread. One of which is the manual states that PC's are not to be hooked to this TV via the HDMI or IEEE1394 ports. Does anyone know why this is?
Has anyone hooked this up to their PC via the HDMI port? I have a PC with Radeon 9600 with DVI port and want to give it a try. I also have a Fusion HDTV 3 Gold in that same PC. Anyway, is there any way to record to the PC via the Firewire port?

Any insight on any of my questions would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks.

I finally made the plunge into the HD world!! I own a 52HMX95. I came from a 32" JVC standard def and was very excited to finally own both a big screen and an HDTV for the first time. I spent lots of time lurking in this forum and especially this thread reading every post since the 95's first started getting discussed, and I want to thank every one for the time spent posting here.

When I got the tv 3 weeks ago I was actually disappointed with the PQ of anything coming to it, SDTV, DVD, even HDTV which I get through cable...I've now learned that I expected too much (was expecting more of the "looking out of a window" experience)...that DLP's in this price range have certain PQ limitations. I want to like this TV, I really do. I'm not getting rid of it so I have to.

My main issue is <cringe> the "grainy" picture. I know this was beaten to death a month or so ago and I'm bringing it up only because I'm curious how far away other 95 owner's are sitting. I'm sitting exactly 12 feet from my 52, which I think should be a perfect distance (right?) for that screen size. The PQ doesn't suck by any stretch of the imagination, I just expected more clarity(?); and the "graininess" takes away from the "clarity" I was expecting from HD (please bear with me, I'm a mild enthusiast no where near an expert). If I stand behind my couch, about 15 ft away, the grains are less noticeable, but I can't move my couch that far away.

I've only tinkered with calibration using the THX Optimizer from one of the Star Wars' DVD's. Will using a calibration DVD help with the grainy picture? I know it will help with overall PQ, but I'm thinking not necessarily with the "graininess".

I do not want to rehash any discussions about the HD2+ chip in last year's model compared the the HD4 chip in mine. I've read all of that several times. I was compelled to get a Toshiba and to get this year's model because of the opportunity to get it using a Toshiba employee discount.

Enough rambling. For you fellow 95 owner's:

1. What is your viewing distance and screen size?

2. Will calibration help with the "grainy" picture?

3. My current DVD player is a Pioneer DV-414 (old school 480i output only, but otherwise a decent player I think). Will I see an improvement using specifically either the Tosh 4980 or 5980 both upconverting over HDMI?

Thanks for your time everyone. I really enjoy reading your posts!!

I recently purchased the Sony DVPNS70H to upgrade from a first gen 480i DVD player (and I mean first gen, no DTS, no DD decoder, no Component), and love it... I didn't have any of the shift that many people seem to have... I read a ton about upconvert DVD players, and this one got the best reviews as far as PQ and Audio for any in the $150 price range...

It won't make your DVDs look quite HD, but the improvement is noticable, especially when looking at text... it's not all jaggy like w/ 480i... that and the HDMI connection has got to be a step up from the S-Vid... lol

The grainyness is likely the result of the source and not the TV. Last night I watched Fox for 1.5 hours and when I moved down one channel I was shocked to find out that I had been watching SD the entire time! It looked pretty darn good and fooled me.

HD programs looks simply stunning but because of the size of these DLP's (mine is 72) you can tell when a broadcast is crappy. Once again, it's the TV and not DLP.

As far as DVD's go, I did a pretty good test using the same DVD on a Sony (non progressive), Xbox and a new Toshiba SD5980.

The Sony looked like crap and I was very disappointed - first night the set arrived so I was bummed. But I tried the Xbox and it was definitely better.

Went on to the 5980 upscaling and the picture is perfect! The player will make a remarkable difference.

You're welcome. The 72" looks nice but you can't get too close to it or you'll notice the flaws.

I had the guys over for Monday Night Football in HD (wifey is away) and we threw some steak tips on the BBQ (midnight :)) and ate them from the kitchen which is ~36 feet away. TV looked great from that distance :) but the tips tasted better.

Sorry for taking so long to reply. Toshiba never asked for the SD card back nor was I required to sign anything. I did not check whether the firmware deletes itself.
The TVG never worked. Toshiba says it is TWC who's blocking it to force you to get their cable box. They are probably right. I broke down and returned the cable card and exchanged it for a HD DVR. All works great now.

The hm84 does not have game mode and I have noticed a slight lag with some games on my XBOX (which is connected through s-video and not components). I am going to purchase the XBOX 360 which displays all games at 720p. I was wondering if I should still expect a lag becuase the 720p is already the TV's native resolution or should this problem go away?

Maybe "grainy" is the wrong word to describe what I'm seeing. It's not related to the source because I see this from any source. I guess what I'm really seeing are the "pixels". In any bright scene (sky, snow covered mountains, shiny reflections on water, Hockey ice , white football jerseys - all in HD) I see thousands of specks lined up in perfect rows and columns. The closer I get the more visible they are. I'm not too worried about how visible they are up close because I always watch from the same viewing distance - 12'. I just can't believe how visible they are from 12' on a 52" screen!

I don't mean to rant about this. I'm just curious what other 95/720p owners think of this. Do you not see this or are you simply willing to accept it?...or is mine worse than others (highly subjective I know)?

Is this inherent to DLP technology? If it is then fine because I can't afford plasma, don't like LCD, and I don't want a CRT RPTV or front projector.

I am going to purchase the XBOX 360 which displays all games at 720p. I was wondering if I should still expect a lag becuase the 720p is already the TV's native resolution or should this problem go away?

Since you were connecting the XBOX through s-video the TV is de-interlacing the source, which is what should be causing your lag. With XBOX360 running at 720p I believe you should not see any lag.

Even running at 480p will eliminate the lag. i.e. components connection.

I still have to go back to the source as the problem but I believe DLP's will magnify the problems with a bad feed.

If I watch Discovery HD there is no compromise in quality no matter what I watch on TV. Snow, water, flesh - it all looks perfect.

But watching the same things with an inferior source (even DVD's) I see the problems you mention although calibrating the TV will make a bit of a difference.

It's something I am willing to live with an hope by getting an OTA most of the problems will go away. Just remember, your cable company compresses the HD content so you will see flaws if they do a crappy job compressing it.

Buy a copy of Avia to do it yourself http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/630551982X/002-5181218-6192826?v=glance&n=130&s=dvd&v=glance or ultimately have an ISF certified tech come out and do it for you http://www.imagingscience.com/isf-trained.cfm. Depending on the number of inputs you want calibrated, that should run you $250-$500, but well worth it.

That sounds a lot like screen sparkle/SSE etc. Almost like perfectly symetrical columns/rows of moisture droplets glistening in any overly white content. It's inherent to the type of screen, not DLP's, and most micro RPTVs will have it to some extent. The new SXRD's from Sony are said to tone it down considerably. A decent tuning with Avia/DVE etc will also do wonders. The higher the contrast, the worse the effect. I'm currently on 40/100 for HD, 45/100 for DVD. At factory contrasts of 80/100 and 100/100 it'll stand out horribly. On any content where you are crushing whites due to too high a contrast setting it'll appear more obvious.

Thanks toenail, I think you've definitely nailed (no pun intended :) ) what I'm seeing. I've seen "SSE" mentioned before and always wondered what that stood for - Screen Sparkle Effect definitely characterizes it.

I have played with the settings using one of the THX Optimizers and have my contrast down below factory settings, but I need to lower it more I guess (I really need to get AVIA!).

A question on calibration: do you calibrate one input and then copy the settings to the other inputs? Or, do you reconnect your DVD player to each input and calibrate them individually? I guess it comes down to personal preference and time willing to spend, but is there a big difference between the 2 methods?

It is far easier to simply copy the settings obtained for your DVD input to each of the other inputs and use them as a foundation to start from. Some minor adjustments may be needed. On my set, contrast is 5pts lower for HD input and brightness is 4pts higher for HD input than the settings for DVD input. YMMV.

The THX optimizer can be a good tool. Be aware that they are not all created equal. The one for Incredibles has my brightness at near 20/100 to lose the drop-shadow, while Episode III has brightness at 46/100 to achieve the same result. Again, YMMV.

This post should belong in one of the OTA threads but I'll post here becuase it has to do with my toshiba dlp.

Last night I purchased a big honkin OTA from Radio Shack rated for 90 miles. Got the thing in my attic and then pondered how I would run the 100' of cable to the TV. Rather than come up with a solution I decided to punt and let wire come down through the attic, down the stairs and across the house to the TV.

Connected it and was startled at how beautiful the free OTA broadcast could be. No compression and the picture looks awesome.

So I went into the signal meter section and took some notes on the signal strength for several stations located in the Boston area. I am 30 miles north of Boston.

Next I disconnected the Radio Shack monster and connected a cheap pair of rabit like ears which came with an old 13" TV. Believe it or not the signal strength was nearly as good for this antenna.

Today I packed up the radio shack antenna (saved me from having to figure a way to route the cable) and exchanged it for a $29.99 indoor antenna with gain control.

This unit provides better reception than the monster antenna and it's hidden behind the TV.

So why am I posting this? If you are having problems with PQ on your DLP then first make sure you have a great source and that you are not trying to fix the TV for a problem caused by your bad feed. A 1080i OTA HD broadcast will likely be better than anything coming out of your DVD player too.

The OTA provides a superior picture even better than the HD feed from my cable company. If I see problems with the picture using this then I'll know I need to start adjusting the TV.

Highly recommed the OTA! Maybe now I can get rid of Cable if I can only do without ESPN and Discovery HD!!! :) :)

Were you able to get the HD channels through the older cheap antenna? I actually bought one of the Philips rabbit ear type antennas before we were able to get cable ran to our new home. Maybe I should give it a try.

Hi everyone. I have the 52HM84. I've had it for a few months now but I've just recently noticed something. I have a Philips DVD player connected via component video. The player is set to 16:9 Wide in the setup menu. However, when I play a movie, the only way I can get it to take up the entire screen is to set the TV to Full. Is this correct? Shouldn't the TV see that the signal is widescreen and not let me change it from Natural?

Thanks.

I could get every channel the large antenna could get but some came it full strength and others were strong enough to show picture but it would break up.

With the new antenna (Radio Shack model # 15-1878) I get all the channels and they come in full strength with the gain turned on.

Just remember to do a channel find on the TV so it can identify all the HD channels for you :)

Good luck.

How are you tuning to the OTA HD channels? Don't they typically have a hiphen in there station number such as 42-1? You know, maybe I should read the TV manual... :)
BTW, here's the rabbit ear antenna I purchased way before having a HDTV.. it apperas to be similar to your Radio Shack model but capable of amplifying to 45dB.

Yeah, I still haven't read the manual but I did do just that, less deleting the SD channels. I did delete the channels it would not receive worth a darn. Despite my antenna being a bit more robust than yours I still can't get but a few HD channels clear enough to consider watching. I live too far out to get decent reception without going with a rooftop antenna would be my guess.

Are they turned on? I suppose you mean does it have a check mark in the box next to the channel? Yes, my channels have checks in the boxes next to them. Not all channels are supported? How do you know what is and what is not supported?Sorry, I was out of town for a few days. I'm not referring to the TV menu where you have the add/delete channel option. I'm talking about the TVGOS setup option where you can edit the channels that display. In this menu you can arrange the order of the channels, turn off the ones you don't want as well as turn on ones that might be turned off incorrectly. You also have the ability to correct the channel numbers for ones that might be incorrect from TVGOS. For example, Oxygen might be listed by TVGOS as being channel 145 and it should be 185. You can correct this in the TVGOS menu.

As far as knowing which channels are supported by TVGOS, the only way to know is to contact TVGOS and find out through them.

I was wondering this myself. I just got avia this past weekend and although it is geared towards novice users, I thought it was a little tricky. But then again I never calibrated a dlp before. When I first got my dlp I used settings that other members posted as a reference point and then tweaked them to my liking. After calibrating, I wasn’t too far off. I used my new tosh 4980-hdmi dvd player to calibrate and it was annoying process as the player kept freezing and glitching. I actually returned the dvd player as I honestly couldn’t tell a difference between the up conversion player versus my three year old component dvd player. I have feeling if I dropped more $$$ on a player I could see a difference. Plus the audio signal I thought was very weak. Anyways, a little off topic. I need to go and re-do my avia settings with my other player.

Hey methodair I also live in the Denver area. If you need any help let me know. I also got a decent deal on an avia dvd through ebay. PM me if you want the seller and his web site. Free shipping and I got it in 2-days from California.

I would advise everyone to purchase a back-up lamp as soon as possible. My lamp died roughly two weeks outside my warranty period. After unsuccessfully trying for a couple weeks to get my extended warranty to cover it, I went ahead and ordered one from Toshiba's accessories store for $200. That was a month ago. The lamps are on backorder and mine still hasn't shipped. I finally called Toshiba customer service out of frustration and explained my situation, and they offered to extend my warranty and to send me a new one free of charge. This was certainly a nice gesture, but this lamp is also on backorder. I have now been without a TV for nearly two months. I know I could have purchased a lamp for about $300 from somewhere else, but I kept telling myself I'd wait a couple weeks if I could save $100. Now I'm starting to second guess that idea.

The point is that Toshiba's lack of product support on this issue is appalling, and the only thing to do is place an order now so you won't be stuck without a TV in the future.

My lamp blew about 1 month ago... i called my local repair shop and it took 2 weeks before i got my new lamp... I was pi**ed !

2 Months is simply unacceptable !!

but my main concern is, the reliablility itself... my tv was 2 weeks from being out of warranty and it blew. Your's was 2 weeks out of warranty.

The real question is: Why is it back order almost everywhere ?

My local repair shop told me it could take a while because they where changing alot of these bulbs lately.

Did we get unlucky ? Or is it a bad design of the tv or the bulb and it will blow again in 9 months ?

My DLP broke today!
I bought it in august and already it broke on me. I heard a loud bang while I was cleaning the house and watching sports center this morning and looked over at the TV and no picture at all. When I heard the bang I didnt think it was the tv because I had sound but it was my surround sound syustem doing the audio.
I am guessing it was the bulb. I couldnt find my reciept so I had to go to best buy for reciept and service plan phone number. I am now waiting for a call from my local service person today to set up a time. I hope it is fixed by moday bc Tuesday I will be waiting in lines and stuff for my xbox 360.
I bought this tv so I can play my xbox 360 games in widescreen and 52 inches. I really hope it is the bulb and they have it in stock!
I have friends coming over that day and playing games all day. I might have to cancel plans and stuff. I hope it is fixed by then

I been waiting so long!

well worst thing that can happen is the tv is not repairable and I will just get a new tv maybe 1080p mitsu with the credit

I bought mine aug 23rd! IF the bulbs keep breaking then I will makesure I get a replacement tv and go with some other brand

Unfortunately, I'm now basically planning on making a $200 annual investment for a new bulb. I think these things just don't have the life Toshiba claims they do. It would make sense that a bulb had a defect if it blew after a couple weeks, but not one that has been working for up to a year--you'd think any defect would be exposed by that point.

I think I've also seen SSE called Silk Screen Effect on these boards. My understanding is its caused by the anti-glare coating on the Toshiba's screen (and probably other brands that do something similar). The coating works well in bright rooms such as where mine is, but the negative effects can be readily seen other times in bright scenes. I find it very annoying at times, and if I watched much hockey it would really annoy me, you see it all over the ice. Keeping the lamp on the low setting also helps reduce it.

I have the 52hm84. I placed an order for a bulb over a month ago from the Toshiba accessories store (because I was outside of the 1-year warrany period)and the bulb still hasn't shipped. Last week, however, I finally complained to Toshiba and they offered to send me a new bulb for free. I was told that the part was on backorder, but I just received it today! No, you can't do that because you have to send in your old one (they send you a pre-paid Fed-Ex label for shipping). If you are really unethical and are painstakingly trying to get a free bulb I suppose you could somehow purposely break your old one just before your warranty runs out. But I'd say just buy one so you have a spare on hand.

Well I got my 72mx in yesterday and Wow! What a beautiful picture. I couldn't believe how good the HD channels look. What most impressed me was the HD movie channels. My old set was a Panasonic 47' HD. The movie channels never looked this good. They're film like! Text is razor sharp. I'll be messing with the settings more but I felt the high lamp setting was too bright during the evening.

I do have one concern though and it has to do with the fan. I just wanted to ask someone if it is supposed to always be running when the set is on or is it supposed to turn on and off periodically. Mine stays on. It is smooth sounding while its running but louder than I thought it would be. Definitely can hear it in quiet passages. Should I be concerned or is that just the nature of the beast.

My other concern is that I was unable to get "T.V. Guide" set up. The initial set-up made a couple dozen attempts to find a code with my cable box and was unable to find one that worked. Would be nice to have. Cox cable in Las Vegas.

Yes, it does stay on (mine is the 56hm195) and for a month or so it is a bit disconcerting. To tell you the truth, I don't see it getting any better than it is and so I have begun accepting it for what it is and moving on with enjoying that great picture. The only time it is very noticeable is when using the internal speakers of the set at lower volumes. Once I get into 5.1 mode with the raised sound levels, it is "Gone Like a '59 Cadillac." :D

Yeah. I agree on the 5.1. Mine is unhooked for now. I'm having a custom cabinet made. Wifey wants it to match the new kitchen in maple. The den and kitchen are basically one large room. I have GR Research AV/2 speakers all the way around and an Audio Adire sub. Pretty awesome sound. Now I have a screen that matches the sound.

Actually I was somewhat impressed with the sets built in sound system. Not bad for a T.V.. Soundstage is fairly wide. Imaging isn't bad either. As for the fan noise, no one but me in the family was complaining anyway. I'm sure I can live with it.

I'm going over the manual now and there is a million things I need to figure out. That'll keep me busy. It sure is a beautiful set. Best looking one I've seen for sure.

I just got my 62hm84 back from the repair shop. For the second Light Engine. My warranty runs out Nov. 26th. I called Tosh. and explained. They extended my warranty 6 months. And said if the Light engine Or another major part breaks the will give me a replacement. Should I be getting a replacement now? After the 2nd Light Engine replacement (just got it back last week) I now see what looks to be small dirt or dust behind the screen. You can see it when the screen goes all white. The repair shop is coming out to clean between the Light Engine and screen next week. So we'll see if it fixes it.
Oh, also now that i see you guys talking about light bulbs. Since i got my tv back i've noticed it seems a little darker than before. Could it be the light engine again..., or do you think its the bulb going bad. Does the bulb get dimmer right before goes. The tv is 1 year old, and is on about 5-8 hours a day. Let me know what you think. Also What would you do if it was your tv.
p.s. the repair shop scratched the bezel right buy the "Toshiba" (covered it with silver paint)

Well this is a little scarey. My bulb went out tonight too. I was shocked to find that the last page of this thread is dedicated to people with the exact same problem. I purchased mine back in January so I'm about a month out before the warranty expires. Now I'm wondering if shouldn't go ahead and buy another bulb from somewhere else and get this one replaced. I don't think I can wait a few months for a backordered part.. it's my only tv.

Nah, don't cancel the Xbox 360 order. Simply call/email the company and explain to them your situation and ask them to ship it to me instead. I'll pay you/them for it when it arrives.

All jokes aside, I only wish I would have preordered one myself. My son told me he didn't think he wanted to buy one when they first came out. We had done that with the N64 and the Xbox, preordered and was first to receive. However just last weekend his Xbox bit the dust and now he's reconsidering his thoughts. My only option now is to hope I can buy the 360 off the shelf next week or drop back and buy another original version Xbox.

Hey --- I just wanted to let those who are happy with their PQ but haven't calibrated their monitor with a disc such a Avia - You really should! I was pleased with the overall quality of my DVD's, some looked a little grainy, some flesh tones looked too red - but over all a good picture. I kept my upconvert player at 480p because the 1080i setting did not look as nice. Then I calibrated with Avia last night -- WOW -- I'm now set at 1080i and the handfull of discs that i viewed looked so amazing. Ladder 49 looks great - had a hard time seeing detail in the dark trapped scenes.

And it is so true that you can't go by other peoples settings because my settings went higher than a lot of the ones posted here - but as everyone says - my room, my monitor, my equipment is different than someone elses.

Anyway - well worth the money for anyone who is on the fence of getting a calibration disc ---

Why? Do you plan on NEVER having a TV again?

Lol.. No, there will be TV again, but I was already suckered into one of those online bundles for ebgames where you are not only paying for the system, but a few games you may or may not want.. in this case i wanted 2 of the 4. Actually, I really only want Madden but I've talked myself into wanting the others so that I don't feel as bad about the whole thing.

It was kinda funny when the lamp blew. My wife and I just sat there in silence. I had no reaction, just this kind of bemused stare. Finally she says: "are you going to say anything..?" "I'm just giving it a few minutes to sink in what's going on here before I react." We had a good laugh. It's just one of those things you've heard about but aren't really expecting...

I ended up ordering one online from some parts shop in FL who says they have it in stock and it will ship today.. We'll see. They at least answered the phone when I called. I will still get the warranty one as well. I'm looking at this as a preemptive strike for in the future. When the lamp goes out again, I'll have a backup and then I will celebrate the joy that I already blew the 200+ on a lamp. I just can't see waiting weeks to get the replacement lamp when it's really our only tv.

The irony of this all is that about 2 hours before it went out I popped in Madagascar from Netflix and sat there thinking: "ya know I'm really happy with the picture on this tv."

Can I get someone to help me figure out what's going on. I Just got my 72MX195 Wed. nite. Everything seemed just fine. I made a few posts here asking about fan noise yesterday (Thanks for your help by the way). I get home last nite. Turn on the T.V. and the picture is Magenta and Blue only. There is also a white line perpendicular to the floor about 4 inches from the right side. I power the set off and back on and whala! I'm back to a normal picture.

I watch T.V. all nite and everything looks great. The fan noise is still bothering me though. But the left side of my brain is telling the right side everything is allright.

This morning I fire it up and just like that I have Magenta and Bluevision again. White line is also there. The picture is scrolling from right to left too. I had to turn it off and on 3 times before the picture went back to normal.

Also I now discover that their are two distinct noises coming from the set. The sound I was asking about yesterday was a steady smooth jet like sound. Which appeared to be coming from out of the front speaker panel. When I power the set off with the volume turned all the way down you can hear the jet sound go away immediately. Then you hear the second sound which appears to be coming from the back left side of the set which is I'm sure the fan cooling down the lamp. The fan blows for around ten minutes with a yellow light flashing while this is going on. The fan noise I hear after the set is off is much quieter than the 'jet' noise I hear while the set is on. Does anyone know if this is normal??

I called Toshiba at 800-631-3811 about both problems and they gave me the local Toshiba rep here in town to call. I didn't want to call this guy if I'm just doing something stupid. But I really think something is wrong.

I appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!

Both fan noises are normal for this set. The Instant restart feature is related to the first fan noise you hear which is the louder bulb fan - this feature keeps the bulb on but at a very low power in case you need to turn the set on within a few minutes of turning it off. It is probably less stressful on the bulb in this scenario.

The second fan you hear continuously (much softer) is for the tuner that is always on so it can download TVGOS data. I emailed Toshiba about the same question and they confirmed it. Since these TVs are really like computers that are always running, it takes a while to get used to these differences.

As for the color issues, I would perform a factory reset on the TV rather than just a power off. Again, since these TVs' brains are always on, the problem may need to be cleared through a full reset. Go into your menu, Setup, Installation, and scroll til you see the factory reset page.

Thanks. I'll do that when I get home. I already called for service so I'll just let them come out anyway and look it over. Can't hurt. They'll be at my house on Tuesday. He said the color wheel may have been jostled during shipment. I don't know if I buy that since the colors and everything else look amazing once the picture is established.

Your explanation sounds much more logical. Sounds like a re-boot of sorts.

Just to make sure I made myself clear. The louder noise (the jet noise) I hear is constant whenever the set is on. During quiet passages it is quite noticeable. When I turn the set off that sound goes away. That's when I hear the second noise coming out the back of the set. If I remember right that goes away after about ten minutes.
While that fan is on (the quiet one) is when the yellow light on the front blinks. Once the blinking light stops so does the fan noise. I'd say the jet noise is a little louder than my refridgearator. Sorry If I'm being a pest. I'm definitely a noober!

I bought the disc from Amazon -- Just type in Avia ---- it is a DVD with audio and video calibrations and basic tips on setup of a home theater. The menu lets you junp right to the video calibration settings -- it walks you through what each setting is --- color, contrast, brightness, etc. and then it displays a test pattern for each item and you adjust your settings accordingly.... cost of disc i think was between 25 and 35

Hi there fellas, it's been a long time since I posted here but it seems I've encountered a problem with my Toshiba 52HMX84 set. It seems that I'm experiencing flickering on my set and I'm wondering what it could possibly be caused by? I've seen this while viewing DVDs, gaming and on cable TV. I would appreciate any help fellow members here can provide.

I saw a "flickering" on my set last week when the kid was attempting to hook up the Xbox. It was horizontal bars of varying colors flickering hard and fast. I found the video/audio cable that plugs into the Xbox to be inserted about half way and cocked to one side. After turning the set off and plugging the cable in properly, all flickering went away. Seeing how you have it on more than one input, who knows. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Yeah, not good news. I can only hope the flickering I've seen is not the same flickering you guys are talking about because my set is less than a month old. The first thing I did after turning it on for the first time was to go to low power mode on the bulb. I also will not allow the set to be turned on and off. Either it's on for the evening or off for the evening.

The problem is that this same gray scale noise you see in the more controlled environment of the PC is also present on every other input, including the internal tuner.

Does this issue exist when using a console like PS2 or perhaps Xbox 360, and if so, how noticeable is it? Is it easy to not notice if you dont look for it?

Hello gkrykewi: The "pincushion" effect is a well known issue with these units and apparently there's no solution for it..

Is this an issue with the 95 series as well? And whats the difference between the 94 and 95 versions, someone said earlier in this thread that 94 had better pq somehow.

That is definitely disappointing, I just hope the case isn't the same for me being that I own a Cinema Series set as opposed to the regular HM84 series. At least that is what I would like to believe, I received this set back in Jan. of this year and it's been used quite a bit but to have bulb issues in the middle of November doesn't say alot about this set. I will give Crutchfield a call and mention my findings. Hopefully on the warranty a bulb replacement applies. I'll keep you guys posted on anything that comes up, thanks for the replies.

Yes, but that would tell you it's a problem with the antenna and you could research a fix, such as an antenna isolator. See below:

: There is a humming noise coming through my speakers. How do I fix it?

A: Audio Hum is most likely caused by a ground loop problem. Connecting components that are plugged into the same electrical circuit causes ground loops. To remove the hum, you will need to re-plug one of the components into a separate circuit, or purchase an Audio Isolator [sometimes referred to as a Ground Loop Isolator]. The Audio Isolator will break the loop of the ungrounded current and quiet the hum. If you are living in an older home that does not have a properly grounded electrical system, the Audio Isolator may be your only solution.

Some people experience hum that is the result of antenna interference. In these cases there are two options. You can simply remove the antenna, or you may purchase and install an Antenna Isolator.

I've had my 46HM94 for a little over a month now. Everything worked as expected until I heard some hissing/crackling noise coming out of the built-in speakers. I don't have a surround sound setup yet so I've been relying on the built-in speakers for all my input sources. The noise I heard was on both speakers, I tried changing the source from cable box to DVD (both component inputs) and it was still there. Checked the cables and tried unplugging them a few times. Since the noise was still there and it didn't seem like it was coming from a specific source so I decided to restore the TV to factory defaults. After powering the TV back on, the noise is gone. Reading on the forum I found this thread that talks about Audio Hum and its symptoms. I live in a pretty new apartment complex so I can't imagine the electrical wiring would be bad. Plus I have all my equipment plugged into a power conditioner/surge protector.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this with their built-in speakers on their Toshiba set?

I too, have just noticed this. I have a 52HM85 which I purchased about 3 months ago. About a week ago, I noticed that when I first turn the TV on, there is a flickering. It occurs after the bulb is warmed up. It looks like the bulb is flickering from bright to dim maybe 4 to 6 times really quickly, lasting for maybe a second or two. then its fine, then this happens again maybe a minute or so later. I only seem to notice it soon after the TV has been turned on. Once its been on for an extended period of time, there's no flicker. I have my bulb set on low power, and it also seems that when it flickers, setting it to high-bright makes the flickering stop.

I hope to be replacing my five year old Sony KP-61HS10 4:3 set with the 72MX195. The Sony has a very highly relfective screen, and cannot be used in a room with a lot of windows, since the reflections off the screen obliterate the picture. I spent several thousand dollars on drapes, and it is now watchable, but in the daytime I still get some distracting reflections. Now for the question: how reflective is the screen on the 72MX195? Am I likely to experience the same types of problem I have had with my Sony?

I believe the screen is the same on the 72hm195 (which I own) and the room I have mine in is extrememly bright. I have not had a problem with glare or reflections.

My old set was a Hitachi Ultravision and the screen would reflect the lights from my kitchen and from the windows depending on the viewing angle. The Toshiba does not.

(1) According to the specs, the 72MX195 has "2 IEEE 1394 "DTVLink" ports for HD record/play with digital video recorders like Toshiba's Symbio™" Question: can a DVR other than the Symbio be used? Are there any other uses for this port, or would it be that if I don't purchase the Symbio, the port cannot be used? I would really like to be able to use this port (or the Firewire port) to record HDTV shows on my PC. Possible?

(2) THINC Rj-45 port. What is this used for? I have a home wired and wireless network with a connection near my home theatre.

(3)What's the best method of hooking up this TV to my HTPC? Is the analog video output (15-pin D-sub) the best method? Will I be able to view WMV 1080p files from my computer?

has anyones picture gotten darker before the lamp blew?
mine seems darker, even on high bright mode. dark scenes are hard to watch, even regular stuff seems darker. I just ran AVIA , and even with the contrast at 100 i cant make the right white moving bar disappear. 80-100 look about the same. I can definately see it. (my brightness is at 37 to make the one black bar disappear)
What do yall think.

MY brand new 62HM95 fans DO turn off about 15 minutes after the tv goes off, So this is probably a fix in the firmware, I dent know. Just FYI.

Lamp timer
If it's the same as the 94 series the instructions are as follows:

With TV turned on:

1. Press "mute" on the remote - 1/2 mute appears on the screen
2. Press "mute" on the remote again - mute appears on the screen
3. Press "mute" on the remote and hold the mute button -
4. Press the "Menu" button on the TV's front panel. "S" will appear in the upper right corner of the screen.
5. Press the "Menu" button a second time and the "S" will disappear. On the left side of the screen you will see "RCUT" followed by two numbers.
You are now in the service mode.
6. Press "9" on the remote and you will access the diagnostics page. In the right hand corner is the lamp time in hours.
7. Press "power" button on remote to exit the menu and power off the TV.

CAUTION: Do not use the up and down volume keys on the remote in this menu as it can alter the data and can be dangerous.

Took alot of searching to find this out, I found out more, however I only posted what I thought others might find Interesting.

Noob question - what are guidelines/best practices/risks regarding turning the TV off after brief viewing or turning it back on after it's been off for a short period of time? Is it bad to only watch for 30 min. or less? What about watching for say only an hour? Is it bad to turn the TV back on if it was turned off only 30 min. to an hour prior?

I know these bulbs will go at some point, but rbbnet's practices seem a little extreme to me (no offense rbbnet!) and are not practical in my house with a wife who doesn't "get it" and a son who can grab the remote at any time. Any info or links to info is much appreciated.

I've had my 62HMX94 a little over a week, and have been quite happy with it so far. I'm about 1/2 way through reading this thread, and have got a lot of good info. But, a couple of days ago, I hit a strange problem with recieving over the air digital channels.
Our local NBC affiliate had a problem with their Harris Flexicoder the use to generate and multiplex the HD signal, which I was recieving on 7.1 and 7.2. Though others in my area say it is fixed, I'm still not getting any signal on either 7.1 or 7.2. the "real" channel is 26. I get a great signal for 26.1 and 26.2, but no actual programming. When tuning in 7.1, the signal meter screen show's zero signal and no virtual digital channel, just 7 as the actual channel.
I've rescanned several times, and I've used the reset button and left the TV unplugged from the wall for about 10 minutes, still no luck. Even with these reset attempts, about all that gets reset is the channel listing (I remove all non-digital channels each time). Custom display settings, etc... are still intact after unplugging or using the reset button. My theory is that the earlier problems with my local NBC affiliate have resulting in a bad setting in the ATSC tuner, and I'd like to reset, but can't seem to. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

I am having serious issues with my 72hm195 and hope you can help me troubleshoot. TV has been working fine for a few weeks and now I'm having issues.

Right now everything works fine in terms of HD/SD/OTA/Audio and Video. But tomorrow morning (like every morning for the past week) I'll turn the TV on and there will be no audio on any station.

If I turn the TV off and eject the CableCard and then turn the TV on then I'll only get audio on the SD channels but not on the OTA HD channels. DVD player works fine.

Then I put the cablecard back in and I can't get any Cable station because it will say it's acquiring channels. No audio on the OTA stations, only video.

The only way to get the TV working again is to do a system reset (per manual instructions) and when I turn the TV on everything works. Audio/Video for all OTA, Cable HD and Cable non HD channels.

Any idea what is causing it? TV? CableCard? OTA Antenna?

I feel like leaving the set on tonight and not turning it off until after Thanksgiving :)

Thanks for any help you can offer. I plan on calling Toshiba tomorrow.

/Joe

Many cable company STB's offer this feature, including Cox. I don't believe you can use their black bars and retain the 480p option together. In my case the 480p looks substantially better than the 480i/black bar combo, so I live with the 480p/grey bars.

Can anyone confirm that this applies to the 52HMX84 set?

I wonder... Has anyone taken A HM95 series apart? If theres a spot for the VGA connector on the board, One could theoretically sauder a new connector to the board and get a hold of the firmware for a HMX95 and turn the tv into a HMX95 for less than 10bux.

Just theory, I wont mess with it for many years, until my warranty runs out.

has anyones picture gotten darker before the lamp blew?
mine seems darker, even on high bright mode. dark scenes are hard to watch, even regular stuff seems darker. I just ran AVIA , and even with the contrast at 100 i cant make the right white moving bar disappear. 80-100 look about the same. I can definately see it. (my brightness is at 37 to make the one black bar disappear)
What do yall think.

I believe this would be normal for a lamp that is nearing its end of life.

From the xxHM84 owner's manual:

Lamp unit replacment section:

When to replace the lamp unit

You should replace the lamp unit

- if the picture darkens and/or colors fade;
- if the screen (lamp) does not light (LED indication 3); or
- if you hear a loud noise and the picture goes black, which may indicate a lamp rupture (LED Indication 3).

Troubleshooting section:

"No picture or too dark - The lamp unit may need to be replaced."

How many hours do you have on the lamp (check lamp hours on diags screen)?

The projection lamp in my 62HM84 just went out on Saturday during the Ohio State vs. Michigan game. What a bummer  , a loud pop and then everyone had to move to the neighbor's for the rest of the game. It is still covered under warranty, but who knows how long it will take to get a new lamp.

The lamp only had about 4000 hours on it and while it was definitly dimmer than when new I could still adjust for a good picture.

If your set is out of warranty I would advise you to order a new lamp unit. If it is in warranty then I guess you will have to wait until it fails and call Toshiba (www.tacp.toshiba.com/service, 1800-631-3811) to arrange delivery of a new lamp. Note that you will have to send the old lamp back.

well like i said before they replaced the Light Engine twice, and they are coming to clean the dirt between the light engine and screen tomorrow. I doubt they will replace the lamp if its just darker. I guess i will just have to ask, especially since other peoples lamps are going out. I have about 2300-3300 hours on the lamp.
Are you supposed to be able to make the one white moving bar disappear on the contrast test (AVIA)?
thx

Well I just made a appointment with my nearest service center for repair and unfortunately I had to request the lamp from Toshiba directly. They'll run the necessary diagnostics but the lamp won't be installed unless I have one at my disposal. So I'm here putting in a good word for those who are having similar problems with this set. The lamp is currently on backorder at the moment but will arrive at the end of the week and will ship out beginning of next week so to avoid a long waiting period due to shortage of lamps, get 'em while they're hot. :D

Well, I took the cover off of my 62HM95 and there is a place on the board for the VGA connector. So Now I wonder if the 62HM95 would accept a firmware from a 62HMX95, Anyone got one? I know it would be nice to get that 1:1 picture.

I bought my first Toshiba DLP about a month ago (62HM95). I'm happy with the set, but have had nothing but trouble with the CableCard from TW. It's a Scientific Atlanta CableCard. Toshiba suggested resetting the TV which would work sometimes, and even then the channels would only stay in memory for a day or so, and then disappear from the channel list. TW came out to my house three times, each time sending a more clueless individual then the last - ending with them telling me to take it up with Toshiba. Called TOshiba and they are sending me a software upgrade. Have not received it yet, but was wondering if anyone has had similar problem and any light they can shed on this problem. Don't really want to get a set-top box as I dont use those features, but not having High-Def channels when you have an HD set is killing me! If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.
