Would like owners opinions on the SD performance on the HM95 series vs other microdisplays when they were doing evaluations. At the 1 B&M where I could so a side by side comparison with a Direct TV feed, the Sony seemed to have a slight edge in SD performance. Sales droid claimed the Sony has better processing to improve SD.

Forgot to add the Sony is the E50A10

Looked at the Sony/JVC/Toshiba/Panasonic sets when I purchased my Toshiba 62hm95. Definitely felt the LCD's were a bit brighter, but didn't have the viewing angles as I was told. Also felt there was more pixel trailing in the picture of the LCD sets. Of all the LCD's I felt the JVC HD-ILA was the best (Sony about as good but a lot more money at the time). Ultimately decided I liked the DLP's for my taste, better. Note: looked at Samsung DLP's and was significantly UNIMPRESSED with the picture. My buddy has a Samsung 50 DLP, and he has mentioned several times how much nicer the picture looks on the Toshiba. Hope that was a help.

If anyone is looking for a source for the xxHM84 lamps (Toshiba TB25-LMP p/n 23311083), I found a company that has them in-stock for 199 USD, www.tritronicsinc.com. The shipping charges seem to be reasonable (under 20 USD to ship to OH from MD).

I am new to this site but have found it a tremendous help already. I have another question, (one earlier about CableCard), with regard to DVD players with upconversion. I bought a Toshiba with upconversion, (cant remember the stock number), and was wondering if it needs to be connected to the TV via the HDMI in order to benefit from it, or is the connection through the component jacks OK. I dont seem to see any difference in the display output when I change the setting from 480 to 720 to 1080. Is this normal?

through component it'll only upconvert non-copywrited material... through hdmi it should upconvert everything...

another thing to look at is that not all upconvert dvd players are treated equally... after tons of research I went with a sony...

Hi All... My 52HM95 is great! The picture is awesome and I am really impressed in how bright it is in a room full of windows.

However there is one annoyance when it is powered up. The warm up light comes on red wait a few seconds and the video comes on....wait a few seconds and the picture goes black and the green light blinks with a solid red....wait a few seconds and the picture comes on and everything is fine. This total sequence runs about 60 to 90 seconds.

Has anyone else seen this? It does not happen every time. I first thought it was the remote code on my Comcast remote but it happens with the Toshiba remote also. I would expect it to be black initially until the lamp warms up but the up and down of the picture concerns me.

I still havent got my lamp in yet for my Toshiba TV and they are still on back order like I posted last week. I kept getting the run around from them and they kept telling me call tomorrow and not giving me a date when the lamps will come in. I was told on fridat that the lamp would be shipped out on monday so i will get it by tomorrow. So I called for tracking information after I picked up my Xbox 360 and still hasnt been shipped. So I start getting really pissed now because I been getting the run around from toshiba for over a week now with no information on when I would be recieving the lamp and they promised by thanksgiving so I knew this was going to happen with them and I decide to call again 1 hour later asking to speak with a manager so we can fix this issue right away. I explain how I have only had the tv for 2 and half months and already issues. and How I was promised to have it for thanksgiving dinner and how I am not happy with the run around I been getting. I told them That I will no longer recommend there products to my customer anymore. and I dont know how there lamps can be on back order since it is a brand new tv, so I kept talking and asking well how can your send out more of these tv to people during xmas season with no lamps? they dint respond. They are just using the lamps for the xmas rush and not providing customer with lamps so they can sell more tv's. So after a while I say well you can always pull a lamp from one of your tvs you have and send me that one and then replace it with the lamp they are getting on any day now you been telling me. So lady finally gets her manager and talks to him for me and 10 min later they say well we can get you a lamp and overnight it to you so you will have it tomorrow and in time for thanksgiving. So only way to get anywhere is to complain until you get your way I think. I kept asking nicely and got nowhere. with toshiba you have to keep pushing until they break. All along they had lamps they could of sent to me but just wanted to make me wait..

Toshiba Customer service sucks and I would not recommend them ever again and to any customer of mine and hopefully they can earn my respect again. I am kinda happy that they are overnighting it, but I also would of been happy with a real answer and be truthful with me from the beginning. I dont like the run around and now I feel like a jerk for putting up such a fuss to get my lamp by thanksgiving day. I will write back if it comes tomorrow or not.

I love mt tv when it works but damn Toshiba Customer Service sucks, and last point I wanted to make was why do I have to keep calling them? they should have a website that I can type an rma number to get the status of my lamp and get tracking information

Monitor3 - Almost every DVD player on the market will [only upconvert via HDMI. There are a few exceptions...like one particular zenith and a few Samsung(which you have to hack). Thank the movie industry and their lobbyists for that.

Anyone know the difference between the 72hm195 and the 72mx195. Best I can tell is the color, the mx has vga input and the mx has ethernet. Anything else?

I bought my first Toshiba DLP about a month ago (62HM95). I'm happy with the set, but have had nothing but trouble with the CableCard from TW. It's a Scientific Atlanta CableCard. Toshiba suggested resetting the TV which would work sometimes, and even then the channels would only stay in memory for a day or so, and then disappear from the channel list. TW came out to my house three times, each time sending a more clueless individual then the last - ending with them telling me to take it up with Toshiba. Called TOshiba and they are sending me a software upgrade. Have not received it yet, but was wondering if anyone has had similar problem and any light they can shed on this problem. Don't really want to get a set-top box as I dont use those features, but not having High-Def channels when you have an HD set is killing me! If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

I have a 52HMX95 sporting a month old SA cablecard from BrightHouse cable. I too have major issues with the CC. I do get all of the HD channels I'm supposed to. However practically the entire digital tier does not work with the exception of the HD channels. Audio comes and goes on the HD channels but I've figured out a work around . The channel info that's displayed briefly when changing stations will be correct one day, wrong the next. I've also ran into the same issues you speak of with tech support... or the lack there of. The last trio of idiots they sent out didn't even know how to insert the CC. I told the guy get the heck out from behind my set, I'll do it if you don't know how. Good luck with getting it to work as I doubt TW will be able to help you nor do they really want to help you, they'll lose money if it works. If the firmware/software upgrade arrives and fixes things, let us all know so we can order ours too.

I have the HMX95 with the S97 connected via HDMI. The PQ looks fantastic but on occasions I do see MB (macroblocking). I've read here that some claim the MB is a bit less on the S77 albeit I can't confirm nor deny the claim.

Well I received the software/firmware update from Toshiba on Wednesday (version 1.2.8 for those interested), and was all excited when I installed it, reset the TV, and it locked in all the channels in less than five minutes. I was going to have all my channels for thanksgiving. Woke up the next morning and all but three of the channels had disappeared from the memory!! In less than 24 hours I am exactly back to where I started!. Thinking of throwing in the towel and getting the STB from TW. Dont want to but dont see any alternative. This is exactly what the cable industry wants I'm sure. Anyway, if anyone has new knowledge please let me know - Monitor3.

Make sure you copy all your picture settings and any other customized menu settings before you do. It happened to me twice with my set a few months back but has been fine ever since.

I have been running my DVD output via HDMI to my 52HMX95. I then used the TV's audio out via RCA jacks to my receiver. All was well. I decided to drop the audio RCA jacks and go optical out to the receiver. When doing so the sound comes through on Ant1 input however the audio from my DVD player no longer works. The DVD player's audio will work through the TVs's speakers it just doesn't make it through the optical out to the receiver.

I ended up putting another optical cable from the DVD player straight to the receiver. In doing this we now have to change the receiver setup when going from watching TV to watching a DVD. Not a big deal but the lil ones and even the mommy can't seem to grasp the concept.
Any ideas or suggestions that might get the optical out on the TV to carry the audio coming in from the HDMI cable?

Sorry to hear things haven't gotten any better, not just for you, but for all of us. The last time I spoke to my cable company about my CC issues they claimed their expert would call me. That was 2-3 weeks ago. Good thing I haven't been waiting on him. I wonder if owners of different brand sets are experiencing similar CC issues. Could it be that the cable companies are causing or simply not fixing the issues? Sure they don't care if we have issues as they lose money by us using the CC. But on the other hand, law is law and if the FCC mandates they support CC who is to enforce that? Lastly, my cable company claims all is good on their end, it has to be my TV.

Make sure your DVD sound settings are set to output raw. Also, make sure your AVR has the digital input going into an input that can accept a digital input or at least make sure it's set up to do so.

When you say optical out to the receiver do you mean a toslink optical cable or a digital coax cable?

I have a HDMI cable going from DVD to DLP. Then I have the digital coax going from DVD to AVR and finally I have the toslink optical cable going from the DLP to the AVR.

I get Dolby on both cable and DVD and don't have to switch anything. I also have both DVD and DLP inputs on the same input on the AVR so the AVR always stays on the TV input.

Good luck and hope you are able to trouble shoot this.

I want to know the actual difference between the 46hm95 and the 46hm84. Toshiba's website is rather poor and I thought someone here might have already compared the two models. The hm84 is called "theatre-wide" and the hm95 is not.

I was just wondering if that is the major difference and how big of an impact that has on PQ. I have narrowed my search down to a 46" Toshiba dlp and want to know how big a difference the extra $800 means to the PQ. The people I asked at SEARS, BB, Costco didn't appear to know. /JoeJoe, if I understand what you are saying you still have audio from the DVD going to your receiver and are not using the audio output from the TV to pass the audio from the DVD's HDMI input. If that is accurate then I have mine the same way. I tried using the TV's optical output to pass audio from the DVD player (connected with HDMI) but it will only pass Dolby 2.0. The only time I get 5.1 audio passed from the TV input is from the ANT1 connection (Comcast cable). Normally I only use my receiver when watching DVD's so it's no big deal to turn on the receiver when I watch them. Here is how mine is set up.

DVR DVI>HDMI to TV (for video)
DVR coax digital output to RCVR (for 5.1 audio)
DVR 2 channel RCA to TV (for audio not requiring receiver to be on)

DVD HDMI>HDMI to TV (for video)
DVD coax digital to RCVR (for 5.1/DTS audio)
DVD 5.1 cables to RCVR (for SACD audio)

TV optical digital to RCVR (for 5.1 audio from ANT1)

With this configuration I can watch TV and cable without needing the receiver for audio unless I want 5.1 digital. This satisifies the wife. Whenever I want to have the 5.1 audio or watch DVD's I turn on the receiver and select the appropriate input (i.e. DVD or DVR) on the receiver.

The best thing you can do to get detailed info is go back the the Toshiba site:

http://www.tacp.com/televisions/dlp.asp

Click on the model you're interested in, then click the RESOURCES button. You should see spec sheet and owner's manual pdfs (some don't have the owner's manual).

Also, you can check the Toshiba Canada website that seems to have some files that the US one still doesn't have, but the info will apply to US as well.

Thanks for your help guys. They are two different model years and the TV's that have an "8" as opposed to "9" do not have integrated tuners (i.e. ATSC/QAM). The other main difference between the TV's is the HD2+ chip in the 84 and the HD4 in the 95. Some prefer the HD2+ over the HD4 but you may think differently. I think more importantly you need to decide if you want the integrated tuners or not and base your decision on that. A more comparable set to the 46HM95 would be the 46HM94. Here is the nomenclature for the Toshiba models.

Of course the first number is the size of the TV,
H for High Def, A for Analog.
If theres an M, its a DLP, P for Plasma, L for LCD, (its CRT by default)
X is for Cinema Series
1 indicates 1080p (otherwise assume 720p)
8* indicated no integrated tuner
9* indicates integrated ATSC/QAM tuner
* indicates model year 200*

In some of the previous years, they had a D in that indicated DVI, but they've dropped that since all of the new HDTVs have DVI or HDMI. Also, with this year the Cinema Series dropped the "H" for the 1080p sets (i.e. 62MX195) but not the 720p sets (i.e. 62HMX95).

Find "krc's" post in the following thread and look at the differences between the 62HM84 and 62HM94 (very similar to the 46HM95 with the exception of the HD4 chip and the screen size) and you will know what other differences there are.

Thanks Kdog, Your response was helpful. I also read the comparison that you hyperlinked. But I don't know what specs to believe. I was basing my information on Toshiba's website. They claim that the 46hm95 has the hd2+ chipset. They also still list the 46hm84 on their website but it is under a different section called "theatre-wide". They listed the msrp of the hm84 @ $2,999 and the hm95 @ $2,199.

I just wondered why the extra $800?? And why would having the built in Tuner actually make the hm95 cost less?? Maybe their website is just horribly incorrect and outdated??

Thanks for your time.

kdog044 & jumpinjoe,

I have a Toslink from the TV to the receiver. The receiver works fine thru the toslink from Ant1 source material. However when the input to the TV comes from the DVD via HDMI the receiver gets nuttin. Prior to the optical I had the TV outing via RCA. When setup that way the receiver would carry audio whether it came from Ant1 or the DVD player. I've tried setting the HDMI audio options within the TV to auto and digital, no dice. I've also set my DVD player's output to bitstream and PCM, neither of which work beyond the TV's speakers. Plainly put, the TV will not output the HDMI source audio via optical. At least not far as I can tell.

I saw someone else with a similar problem buried in this thread, but I couldn't find any answer to his question...nor can I find the post again to reference it in my post...

Firstly, I'm fully aware the HM(X) series do not officially support a PC...however I don't think the problem I'm having is because of that, but rather a quirk with the HDMI input on the set or HDMI in general.

Is anyone else having issues that the TV will display the picture from PC via HDMI, but then once you change the TV to a different input, like Video1, and then back to the HDMI input, all you get is a black screen? This is really frustrating me as I was hoping to be able to leave my HTPC on and be able to switch to the HDMI input whenever I wanted to access things on the PC, without always having to turn the PC off and on in order to display the picture.

Any help/suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated on this topic.

Is it you don't have an extra input to the receiver or just the fact that you don't want to change inputs on the receiver?

Hi, I'm a long time lurker who has FINALLY saved up the money & bought a Toshiba 46 inch DLP (46HM95) yesterday. I'm replacing my 27 inch SD CRT set so I think I'll be in for quite a treat. Unfortunately I won't be able to pick it up until Dec. 14th. Ugggh. I came home intending to download and read the manual but as I've read here and found out for myself, it seems Toshiba does not have it available on their site.

I'd much perfer to RTFM than ask you guys softball questions that are already answered in it... as well as learning things I'd never think to ask, partially because the TV will be added to a rather confusing setup so:

Is there a downloadable manual for my model (46HM95) available anywhere? Hell, I'll even settle for scans!

I've been working my way through the Toshiba thread and still have a way to go and many things I'm still trying to figure out so thanks for your time and I apologize for such a long ramble for one easy question. I'm still riding the high of dropping almost 14 bills which is HUGE for me :)

Thanks in advance!

I was actually looking to make it simple for the kids and woman in the house. Turn on the TV and the receiver, all works. I ended up having to do just what you said, go optical from the DVD player to the receiver. I also had to go back RCA from the TV to the receiver as well as leave the optical. Seems as long as the TV was tuned to a digital channel I had audio. But go to an analog channel, no audio. Once I put the RCA cables back on and reset the receiver to chose analog or digital, all channels have audio again.
As for the 2.0 from your DVD player, I may have had the same issue but my receiver did a good job of sparsing it out to Dolby or my preferred, Logic 7. Now my receiver takes the info from the digital output and choses the appropriate format. From the lil bit I've toyed with it, I don't think I can chose the format for myself anymore on the digital channels via optical.

rbbnet,

It should all work. The TV, DVD and your AVR are fully capable so it's got to be a connection or setting somewhere. I wish I knew what I was doing so I could help you figure it all out but I fixed mine by fooling with the set up and settings on my AVR.

I remember having to "map" which inputs would be digital and which would be analog on the AVR and after I set it up correctly I got Dolby for DVD and Cable broadcasts.

Good luck.

All,

I just recently purchased the 52HM95. What a great Tv! I am stumped trying to pick up OTA digital channels.

I have a beefy antenna my brother brought over but i still get no picture or sound. I have the ANT2 hooked up with that antenna. I have cleared and searched for channels multiple times. I know there are digital OTA channels in my area, zip 06416. search on antennaweb and found the channels.

If i tune to the channels it will say, WVIT-DT and show a 4 bar green antenna but nothing. What am i missing? Please help?

edit: I also do see like FOX and then HD in the TV Guide listings as well but still nothing.

Thanks

How much do replacement lamps cost for the 46hm95?

II also had to go back RCA from the TV to the receiver as well as leave the optical. Seems as long as the TV was tuned to a digital channel I had audio. But go to an analog channel, no audio. Once I put the RCA cables back on and reset the receiver to chose analog or digital, all channels have audio again.
I don't understand this unless you are referring to a cable box. Using a cable card I get audio from the optical output of the TV regardless of whether it is digital or analog.

Every place I've seen on the 'net lists them for $375! OUCH!

Received a phone call from Toshiba Customer Service this morning to make see if my CC problems had been resolved by the software update on my HM95. Told them it hadn't and they say they are hanging in there with me. Calling them later on this evening. Let you know anything new they tell me. Was surprised they followed up though based on the thrashing Toshiba Customer Service routinely receives here. So far they have done all they can for me.

I was actually looking to make it simple for the kids and woman in the house. Turn on the TV and the receiver, all works.Depending on your receiver it may be possible. My Sony has both coax and optical digital connections for the DVD input and it has the ability to automatically detect which one has a signal. If you connected the TV via the optical and the DVD player via coax to that input you would be able to leave the receiver set to the DVD input and it should properly detect the audio signal from the DVD when you switched to that input on the TV. My wife doesn't like messing with the receiver at all and she leaves it up to the kids to help her when she wants to watch a DVD and I'm not around. For the most part she just watches cable so she uses the audio from the TV's speakers. The 2 channel audio connections from the DVR to the TV handles that just fine.

Thanks for explaining this. It's the exact same set up as I have for my Sony AVR and it detects automatically. But I do remember having to set it up to do this and without the manual I was throwing darts in the dark but I'm glad it works.

I've got the same issue. I'm about 10 miles from the broadcast towers and I've got the antenna hooked into ANT1 and pointed in the right direction, but I can't seem to pick anything up.

I've read the manual cover to cover and it doesn't seem to say anything about picking up over-the-air HD. I browsed the last dozen or so pages of this thread and haven't found a definitive answer yet.

Outside of that and the channel program where it should scan and locate the available channels I don't think there is anything you need to configure differently. What type of antenna are you using?

Things that make you go HUH? No doubt here, if my cable card is tuned to an analog station the TV will not output sound via the optical cable. Or lets say if it does output my Harman Kardon receiver isn't seeing it. Although the cool thing about the optical set-up, when digital channels are played, the receiver automatically switches surround modes per the source material.

After days i trials and tribulations i finally got it to work!!! Watching monday night football is sweet.

what i did:

i moved the antenna outside, i took the cable out of the monster power strip/conditioner and directly into the TV. I also then removed all of the cable and antennas and reset the tv to factory defaults.

Then reconnected the antenna and rescanned for channels.

Voila!!!! As for antenna, im not sure what it is, my brother gave it to me, it is an aluminum 3 pronged antenna with many small pieces branching off so it looks like a W but with the two sides shorter than the middle and has branches coming off each stalk?(wording?)

Hope this helps!! :D Now back to MNF, Colts VS Steelers. Go Cowboys!!

My bulb just blew today. I've had my television since 3/11/05. 8 - 9 months on this bulb...........not very good. I did notice in the last 3 weeks that the screen was getting darker and darker and tonight I heard a poof and the screen went black. I checked the hours on the bulb last month and I had 2500 hrs on it, I hope the new bulbs are better. I am calling them first thing in the morning.

How do you check the bulb hours? On the 94 series:

With TV turned on:

1. Press "mute" on the remote - 1/2 mute appears on the screen
2. Press "mute" on the remote again - mute appears on the screen
3. Press "mute" on the remote and hold the mute button -
4. Press the "Menu" button on the TV's front panel. "S" will appear in the upper right corner of the screen.
5. Press the "Menu" button a second time and the "S" will disappear. On the left side of the screen you will see "RCUT" followed by two numbers.
You are now in the service mode.
6. Press "9" on the remote and you will access the diagnostics page. In the right hand corner is the lamp time in hours.
7. Press "power" button on remote to exit the menu and power off the TV.

CAUTION: Do not use the up and down volume keys on the remote in this menu as it can alter the data and can be dangerous.

Well, add me to the list of people with a dead bulb after just one year of limited use. I have less than 1500 hours on my 52HM84 which was purchased on Nov 4th, 2004. I would say about 70% of viewing was done in low power mode as well.

I am glad I purchased the extended warranty from OneCall -- but now, after reading the rants on this forum, I fear I might be without TV for a while. The warranty place said they were placing a call to a local service center and I called them and they said they had to order the bulb. GULP.

Anyway, how can they rate the bulb at 8,000 hrs? This sounds like fraud to me. I bought the DLP for reliability... not headaches.

I am considering calling Toshiba even though the set is 3 weeks out of warranty to try and get an free bulb shipped fast (like someone else on this forum) -- but am wondering how much time I want to waste on this. I guess I have lots of free time now since I don't have a T.V. -- what a joke.

My 46HM95 QAM tuner can not pick a few HD channels that are in the clear and can be picked up but my other QAM tuners, do anyone know what might be wrong with it ? Right now 46HM95 can only pick up two HD channels.

Another problem is with one HD channel, when the picture gets pixelated, the TV would make a loud rapid clicking sound, too loud to my liking. Anyone had similar experience ?

Post back your results... website seems a little off? Not a scam or anything... just looks like the inventory levels are hit and miss. Not to mention missing overnight/2nd day pricing. Plus, they have a disclaimer on their order page saying items might not be in stock--and will ship once they come in.

Anyway, if you order, let us know what kind of timeline it took for you to get it.

I purchased my 62HM95 on Aug. 4th this year. :)
Last Friday pop goes the lamp. (about 1800 Hours)
“Yes that’s a lot of hours for less than 4 months”
But my last TV a pioneer 60” rear projection went for 12 years
With the same amount of use before the first service call.
I can’t even imagine this $3000 TV after 12 years.
 Lets see 3 lamps a year times $329.00 times 12 years.
$11,844.00 over twelve years. Ouch Why did I do this to myself.
And that’s only for the lamps…. I’m sure there will be other service calls.
I should have visited this forum before I bought into DLP
I would have bought another CRT type rear projection TV in HD.
Do I smell a class action suit on DLP technology!
Oh and that’s the good news the bad news is that it will take 3 weeks to get a replacement lamp from Toshiba.
That’s 336 hours I won’t be using the TV Oh wait that would be 336 hours 3 times a year times 12 years = 12,096 hours over 12 years.. But wait / that by 1800 hours that’s 6.72 lamps I will not need over the 12 year period. So lets see.
329*6.72=$2210.88 I better stop I’m just pissing myself off.

Dang, you do have a problem. Let's see here, 1800 hours in only 4 months. That's approximately 15 hours a day. That only leaves 9 hours a day for sleep and work. Seems like you spend way too much time in front of your TV, maybe your TV needs a month long break to gets some R&R.

I have had my 52HM84 (manufactured May 2005) for a good three months now, and I have a few questions that I cannot find the answer to in this thread.

Im sure my answers are in this thread somewhere, but after hours of reading Im only up to the 30th page and Id really appreciate some help without having to read any further (for now)...

Anyways, I have the 52HM84, and I have a Charter DCT (HD) box hooked up via DVI to HDMI, and a Samsung 360 (HD) Directv box hooked up via component..

The first thing Im wondering about are the occassional popping noises coming from inside the TV..I hear one of these noises on average about every 45 minutes Id say..

From what I have read in the manual this seems pretty much normal, but Id like to know if anyone knows exactly what causes this noise, and if I should be worried about it..

Another question is what about the HDMI port? Have the HDMI port issues with this set been addressed by Toshiba? To me things seem a tiny bit blury using the HDMI connection..

Lastly is the issue of overscan..This set seems to have plentyof overscan going on. Can anyone lead me to any specific information on how I can fix this overscan?

Can I do it with an AVIA disk or something of that sort?

Or is there a simple fix within the service menu?

Thank you for any help..

Hello. I'm planning to finally make the plunge and get a 52HM95 now that the price has finally dropped significantly. Before I do, though, I want to make sure that I have all the right cables to hook it up. I will be using it with a HDTV Tuner/DVR box provided by my cable company.

So here are my questions:

1) Does the HM95 come with HDMI cables?

2) If so, are they any good? (I've heard that good cables make quite a difference)

3) Assuming the answer to #1 or #2 is "No", can anyone recommend a good brand of cable? Obviously, I hear that Monster is THE name for cables, but they are terribly expensive; does anyone know whether there are cheaper ones that are just as good? If there is a good thread for me to read on this topic, please let me know.

As always, thanks for any help!

As always, thanks for any help!As far as I know there isn't a TV out there that provides HDMI cables. Some of the upconverting DVD players do but that's all I am aware of. Which DVR are you getting as some of them have DVI outputs and you would need DVI>HDMI cables as opposed to HDMI>HDMI? I wouldn't waste your money on Monster cables. There are quite a few online retailers to purchase them from but I chose to get them from one of our sponsors RAM Electronics. I am more than pleased with the quality of their cables and they are reasonably priced. I bought optical and coaxial digital audio cables, 5.1 audio cables and HDMI>HDMI as well as DVI>HDMI cables from them. You should check them out. They also offer discounts to AVS Forum members (I think it's 6%) but I believe you have to call them and identify yourself as a member to obtain the discount. See excerpt from the thread.

Thanks, kdog. I know that I'll need DVI > HDMI unless my cable provider has an HDMI-out DVR box I can upgrade to. That would be nice, cuz I understand that DVI is video-only meaning I'll also need audio cables if I can't get HDMI-out.

I'm also wondering what length cable to get. I'll be getting the matching toshiba stand, which I'll put the DVR box on. Do you happen to know whether 3 ft will reach? I don't remember where the HDMI jacks are on the hm95, side or back?

Hello. I found a refurb 62HM14 that i'm interested in. Just wondering if anyone knew what the deal was with the model HM14. Searched the Toshiba site and saw nothing of it. The seller claims its the same as the HM84 Model but i'm curious as to why its not showing up anywhere. Also:

1) Should i be aware of anything when i buy a refurbished model. I plan on getting the 3 year in home warranty with it.

2) The TV comes without a remote. Can i buy a universal remote or would i need a Toshiba remote for this model to play with the settings.

Any feedback is much appreciated : )

I don't remember where the HDMI jacks are on the hm95, side or back?If the design is the same as the 94 series then the connections are in the rear of the set near the middle. I also have the matching stand and use 3 ft cables. The only spot that would be close is if you want to put your DVR on the bottom left side. Anything on the top left side or top or bottom right side you will be fine. I like to use the shortest cables possible as it keeps things neat and you have less chance of issues that you sometimes get with longer ones. See my setup below.

FYI, even if you have a DVR with HDMI out you may still need to run your digital audio from the DVR to your receiver. I have not been able to validate if the Toshiba will pass 5.1 audio from the optical output on anything other than the ANT connection. I have a cable card also and it passes 5.1 when using that input. With my DVD player (HDMI>HDMI) it would only pass Dolby PCM through the TV's output. I don't know if is an issue with the DVD player or the TV but I just went right to the receiver with the audio and use the HDMI for the video portion.

Since there has been a lot of talk about CableCards and TVGOS I thought I would ask what firmware version everyone is running on their TV?

I finally called Toshiba today and they are sending me the latest and greatest version. Seems my version (1.2.4) has issues and the new version (1.2.8) will fix the CC/TVGOS issues. I hope so.

I'm curious if those of you that are experiencing premature blown bulbs have your TVs on a good UPS where it can not ever lose power while the set is running. I know that jerking the power while the set is running will wear out the bulbs due to not properly cooling the bulbs. I haven't had mine long enough to have much experience with it. I do have it on a 1000 VA UPS though :)

I finally called Toshiba today and they are sending me the latest and greatest version. Seems my version (1.2.4) has issues and the new version (1.2.8) will fix the CC/TVGOS issues. I hope so.

My TV: Toshiba 52HMX95

Toshiba 52HMX95
Software version 1.2.2
FW: 1.60
Sub: 54

Sounds like I may need to make a firmware revision call myself.

Keeps us informed as most others who have updated their firmware have either had no luck or have not posted their results.

Mine hasent blown yet but its getting darker.
Ive had it in the shop twice, and when they were at my house, the tech pulled the plug on it a few times while the bulb was on. I would estimate Ive got about 2000-2500 hours on it. Im ordering a new lamp today.

Just a little bit of good with all this bulb talk,
I just read the consumer reports DLP tv list.
Toshiba is 3rd with a Sharp in 1st. The ony thing they didnt like was the menu layout. They said 1st - 3rd were about the same. For the money the Tosh is the best. But in a survey, Tosh. had the least trips to the repair shop. (I guess Im a rare case, Ive been in twice)

From their site: INVENTORY NOT AVAILABLE CAN BE ORDERED

See my setup below.

LOL. That's even the same DVR I have.

As for the audio out, that won't be a problem. I'm just gonna use the built-in speakers [*gasp*] for now. :o Separate speakers will be a project for next year.

Once you get the separate speakers you can add the optical/coax digital audio cable (it has both outputs). My speakers aren't great by any means but for their size they work well for HT, just not for music. They are the Energy Take 5's but I would like to upgrade them next year to the Energy Connoisseur line. Here's my simple setup.

Just picked up the 62" version from Costco. Gotta say, I'm quite disappointed in the quality of the picture, and the lack of features. My previous set was a Vizio 56" DLP, with stellar video.

My biggest grip on this set it the delay in changing channels on either the OTA or internal cable tuner. It takes almost 5 seconds to change. Switching inputs is no different.

Picked it up tonight, and taking it back tomorrow. Too bad Costco is 50 miles RT from my home :(

I too have noticed this from day one since I got my 46HM94. I assumed it was normal but was wondering too what exactly it is...

I feel for you especially knowing that my bulb may blow next week.

My wife is retired, she put her 30 years in with Ma Bell.
Now enjoying the easy life. Plus I work my own business from home.
Have just all ways had the TV on in the back ground.. Never mattered
With the CRT projection I guess I went into this DLP thing blind. Bought based on picture Quality features cabinet size and price, lamp life wasn’t anything I considered I’ll have to plead ignorant on the lamp hour thing. If I could take it back I would do so in a heart beat and get a HD CRT projection TV even if they are 300 pounds heavier. Watching a 15year old 20" Mitsi while we wait for the lamp. Life sucks..

I have had issues between the CC and TVGOS while trying to get the initial settup working, but have been able to get it to work almost flawlessly since.

I think the following helps:

- Reset TVGOS zipcode several times to one I know works.
- Make sure the TV channel map and TVGOS channel map are insync.
- Make sure TVGOS Host Channel is properly set in it's setup.

TVGOS Host channel is properly set it it's setup? This don't ring a bell to me. It's been a while since I dabbled in this stuff but I dont' recall anything about a "Host" channel. Only telling the system my local zip code and choosing my local cable carrier. How do you go about checking or setting this "host" channel.

As per my previous posts, I was not referring to any host channel setting, but rather once you know what your host channel is supposed to be, make sure it is properly defined in the TVGOS channel list.

I.e. My host channel is WGBH PBS 99. In the TVGOS channel list, WGBH was listed as 97. I edited that entry (SETUP/CHANGE CHANNEL DISPLAY), highlighted WGHB and changed the TUNE CHANNEL from 97 to 99.

All I can say is that ever since I made that change it's been working perfectly. Whether it was a combination of all the other resets I performed I can't say for sure.

I'll have to look into that when I get home this eve. I've never looked too much at the channel list excpet when it would totally have things mucked up. For instance, a few weeks ago the set would display the wrong call letters for channels. That would be the call letters seen during the first few secs after swapping stations. Fox network all of a sudden started displaying as PLBY. Boy did that raise a few questions. The only thing I did then was go into the channel listings and tell it to clear them out and to get them again. After several attempts this corrected the problem. To my knowledge they have been correct ever since. Albeit they're apt to go astray at any moment.

Per my call with Toshiba yesterday they are sending me 1.2.8 and claim it fixes the issues with TVGOS and the CC. Should be here 3-5 days so I'll let you know after I install it.

But maybe my problems have more to do with the Host Channel than anything else ???? I'll get this thing working right one of these days. Depends on what your dreaming, The only dispointments I have really found so far for my 62hm95: The lack of viewing to Digital screens or two analog at the same time on the POP, You only get one and the other, I dont know if the 195 can do this or not. Other than that I love the picture, Sounds good, Beautiful DVD reproduction (Get a Panasonic s97s if you can), And overall a great tv.

Yes firmware is easily upgraded if needbe.

Yes you can update the firmware on these DLP TVs. Call Toshiba with all of your info, model, serial and such. They actually prefer you to be sitting with the set so you can peruse the menus and answer their questions.

They'll send you out a SD memory card with the new firmware on it. I would only assume instructions as well. Give me and/or jumpinjoe another week and one of us should have recevied the firmware update and installed it.

I myself have the Panasonic S97 DVD player. It does play wonderfully although I'm experiencing terrible macroblocking with it setup as it is currently. Maybe some tweaking of the DVD player settings or even new firmware for the player will ease that issue. I've found that some movies macroblock bad whereas others are super clean. I watched U-571 lastnight, it was by far the worse macroblocking flic yet for my setup. Just about any underwater shot was nasty terrible. Seems the green hue of the ocean water just became a pixelated moving quagmire of ugly.

Which set? But to make a quick answer of it, yes it will work as a PC monitor. The thing being is it may limit your resolution to only 1024 x 768. You'd be best to take a look at the HTPC forum for advice on setting any TV up for a PC, or visa versa.

Your host channel should be your Analog PBS channel. Assuming your TVGOS clock is getting set, if you go into the TVGOS diagnostic menus, the host channel will be displayed as the clock set channel (mine is 1:0-99 for Ant 1, Ch 99).

Another way to verify is to go into the TV's setup menu, INSTALLATION/TERRESTRIAL/CHANNEL ADD-DELETE and scroll through the channel map and write down any ANALOG channels - you should have only a few, and only one should be a PBS channel and it'll likely be a duplicate call sign of a digital PBS channel.

I’ve learned my lesson, from now on I will spend less time comparing specs and more time on forums when buying new technology. After reading about all the lamp problems and the problems I’ve have had all ready I started an inquiry with the Ohio Attorney Generals office today to see if the lemon law covers TV sets. After talking to the Best Buy Tech that came to the house and Toshiba Support it seems that this is a known problem with the product. The government forces recalls on everything from baby car sits to small toys or hair driers I think there should be a DLP recall. They should not be allowed to continue to sell a product that is known to be defective. I don’t care if it is XMAS. Hum Bug.

Lastnight a did a test of the VGA connector on my 52HMX95. All looked good with the PC resolution set at 1024 x 768 and the refresh rate at 60Hz. Although I never was able to get the TV to show a higher resolution, the screen would simply go black. I was testing to make sure this simple setup would work prior to ordering an audio mixer and cables. I'm going to use a laptop to run a PC-based karaoke system in home.

Has anybody else dabbled in PC connections using a DVI to HDMI connector and if so were you able to get any higher resolutions?

If it's defective and under warranty then sue if you feel you're not getting what you bought. If it's not defective and you feel it's not performing as you'd like, then you should have done your homework before buying.

I've done quite a bit of research on these bulbs since mine blew and the short life seems to be the norm not the exception. If you notice that your set is getting any darker I'd order a new bulb in anticipation of a long wait. I'll find out tomorrow how long I have to wait to get mine, I' ll post as soon as I get of the phone with them. :( I guess I didn't knock on wood hard enough. I fell asleep last night with the TV and awoke to the two blinking lights. I didn't really understand what it meant and I was too tired so I just off the set. This morning I tried to start the TV and it went through the 8 recycles and went back to the two blinking lights. I guess I should have taken your advice and ordered one. Toshiba doesn't have them and couldn't give me a time frame when they would have them. I went and ordered one also from partstore and will just use the Toshiba one as a spare. Unfortunately they couldn't give me an exact date either so it looks like I'm without my TV for at least a week. I guess I would recommend that anyone who bought theirs in the last nine months to consider ordering a replacement. If it ends up going under warranty you will always have a spare and if not you would have ended up buying one anyway. Otherwise, you may be without your set for a week or more.

I made no specific comment about a Toshiba recall The post says a DLP recall.
My post also says I should have done more research But thanks for reminding me.
I have no right to expect my brand new $3000 TV to work for more than 1800 hours of use without blowing up. If you believe that then your expectations are way to low or you sell dlp lamps for a living. I was told buy the sales people 8000 hours can be expected but even with that if I had done the math I would have realized that is no bargain.
Yes DLP is not the only lamp technology and it is also not the only lamp technology getting less than expected or promised life cycle. If you as a
consumer are willing to accept the fact that you well be paying $700 a year for lamps to be able to use your TV then you are either a fool or sell lamps for a living. If the manufacturers want us to do that then they should give us the TV’s like HP does with their printers to get us to buy the over priced ink cartridges.

I purchased my 56HM195 in September and noticed at that time that my bulb number was not listed at the Toshiba site (and still is not). It was my thought that the replacement event was so far away that they were not bothering to change their site with unnecessary data.

Anyways, out of curiosity, I did search for anyone selling part #23311153, D95LMP. To my astonishment, I found 2 dealers both selling for $375.53. I am quite sure of the price for I included it in the name of my bookmarks. Now one of them has upped the ante to $475.53. That is the equivalent to changing $4 a gallon for fuel in New Orleans.

I have only had this TV a month and I have it plugged to a UPS to avoid power loss in a storm so I was about to throw it out the window.

I unplugged the screen from the UPS, waited 5 minutes, plugged it back and presto, I have a picture...strange, but I am really glad it is back. Has anyone else had this happen??

I guess I didn't knock on wood hard enough. My brain must be dead as I was speaking with my stepson and he asks if I called any local places for the part. DOH! :o I looked up local service centers on Toshiba's web site and called the closest place to me. They had one in stock and it was the same price as from partstore and I don't have to pay for shipping. I'm sending the wife to pick it up as I write this so hopefully I will be back in operation tonight. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's only the lamp and not something else that caused it to blow. I don't know if any of you that are trying to order one on-line have checked the local authorized service centers but you may want to give it a shot. :) It sure beats waiting a week or more to fix it and I guess the only downside is I'll have to watch the Lions this weekend.

My apologies if this has been discussed before, but im new to the realm of DLP's...

My Toshiba 46hm95 was just delivered and it looks great, MUCH bigger than my 30" Panny CRT, which while having an amazing PQ, just wasnt big enough.

My question though, i seem to be noticing quite a bit of noise in the images. While watching a movie (Star Wars), i noticed whenever there was any black on the screen, i see almost like quick long wavy lines, hard to describe really. Also, when i was playing back Commander in Chief (recorded in HD on my SA8300hd), i notice quite a bit of noise in the BG... For instance, when Geena Davis is in focus, some objects in the back that you would assume have a constant/same color look fairly "noisy". When i freeze the image, the noise dosent move, it stays.

Is this TV just pointing out flaws in the HD content or do i need some sort of cleaning power block?

kdog044,

I'd assume by the message above this all took place last night and today? Can you estimate how long in months or how many hours your bulb worked? Do indeed let us know ASAP if the new bulb gets your set up and running.

kdog044,

I'd assume by the message above this all took place last night and today? Can you estimate how long in months or how many hours your bulb worked? Do indeed let us know ASAP if the new bulb gets your set up and running.I'm waiting for the unit to warm to room temperature before powering up but I removed the old unit and it was definitely blown. As I mentioned a few threads back I bought my set about 9 months ago and when others were reporting problems I checked the service menu and it had 2945 hours. Based on the others that reported problems the low end was 1500 and the high end was 4000 which makes the average of the six of us at 2516 hours (1500, 1800, 2300, 2500, 3000, and 4000). I always ran mine in low power mode so either the lamps were defective or Toshiba is exaggerating the life expectency as I didn't get nowhere near 8000 hours. At least it was under warranty and Toshiba is one of the few vendors that warrants the bulb at all. I still endorse my puchase but I wasn't planning on $200 a year consumable.

Okay, for the good news the lamp is replaced and the TV is working. The bad news is since I had to power off and unplug the set for quite a few hours all of the TVGOS screens were reset and I don't have a time nor any scheduled downloads listed. It also looks like it has reverted to the default lineup (i.e. all edits are not saved) but I did retain the 8 days of listings. I'm turning it back off to see if it picks up the date and finds the VBI channel and maybe tomorrow I will try making my channel edits again. At least the set is working so the TVGOS issues are minor.

I thought you bought your set at OneCall and got the warranty with it? I may be thinking of someone else.

It is amazing that we bought our sets days apart and the bulbs blew within days of each other. I think that the life of these bulbs is anywhere between 1500 and 3000 hours. Has anyone on this forum made it past 3000 hours?

Ooooops....just noticed your post about the hours. We are definitely thinking alike. Glad to hear you are back up and running.

Sorry to hear of your loss kdog044 but I am glad to know you didn't have to wait for weeks for a replacement bulb as other have complained they have had to wait.

As for OneCall, that is where I purchased my set. But I'll do the same as kdog044 if my bulb blows. Call in my warranty repair as well as drive across town to buy a new bulb if that option exsist. I'll only do this though if my warranty replacement bulb is weeks away. After seeing such a beautiful picture who can stand to wait weeks for replacement parts?

One interesting thing is that the lamp hours does not reset when you replace it so unless there is a way to reset it in the service menu I'll have to write down the hours to know what I get on this one. For the record, it was at 2979 hours so it was just under 3000. Now I'll just have to see how long it takes Toshiba to send me my replacement.

I think Toshiba and all DLP vendors claim higher bulb life than is possible. If you look at the replacement bulb sites they all claim 2000 hours for bulb life expectancy.

Holy remote range batman!

Anyone else try out the range on their remote? I have walked 3 rooms away (nearly 45 feet) and both the Toshiba remote and my universal remote work fine! :)

I'll have to try it from upstairs or next door :)

Samsung does not seem to be having near the problems with their bulbs. I've seen very few posts from people that state such low hours on their bulbs. Every once in a while you'll see someone that had problems but not at the frequency that we are seeing with the Toshibas.

So, I guess there's nowhere to get a digital copy of the manual for the 46HM95 then? Does anyone have a good picture of the rear inputs at least? I'm trying to figure out exactly how I'm wiring everything up so I can buy wires & be ready when it's delivered. Does it have coax optical inputs? Will is pass them through it's coax output? I can't seem to find detailed info on that and some other things.

Also, I should be able to get 1280 x 720 @ 60 Hz, 1:1 when hooking up my computer via DVI-->HDMI, correct? I'm kind of unclear on this. I'd ask in the HTPC forum but I think I need info specifically for this model?

Thanks!

No not yet, but here this might help.
on the side memory slot, composite/Svid. On the back 2 coax in, 2 Composite/Svid in, 2 component/RGB in, 1 Component w/ Audio out, 1 Digital audio/Optical out, 1 G-Link, 2 Theatre net out, 2 HDMI, 1 Cablecard connection, 2 1394, and 2 standard Audio in for when the HDMI connection has no audio.

To your second question, Simply no 1:1, The closest I have seen is with a scaler.

The HMX's last year were the only ones with 2 HDMI inputs. They added the second one to this years HM's.

These might help. On the Toshiba Canada site, they seem to have more of the manuals available.

This is the cheapest I've found thus far, the entire link will not post for some reason so you'll have to put in your television type then search for the part number on the bulb. One good thing is that the link states this:

Please Note:
The Part below is the manufacturer's recommended substitute part. (The original part is no longer available)

Substitute parts provide similar functionality to the original, although there may be minor differences.

I hope the minor difference is, THE BULB LASTS LONGER!!!!

Thanks a lot for the responses traker1001, kdog044 & magredc5.

Traker1001, that helps a lot. As for scalers, I still have a lot to learn about them ("a lot" as in everything!) and was hoping I wouldn't need powerstrip. Is that the program you're talking about? I was hoping I'd set my video card (9700 Pro) to the native resolution of the set & be done with it... but I guess not! Looks like i get to research a new topic & a new program, yay. *rolls eyes*

Magredc5, I had checked out that spec sheet before and didn't find even a menttion of coax audio inputs unless I've mised it twice now! I'll check out those manuals.

Thanks all for the references to the other manuals, I've got some readin' to do now :)

Without a scaler powerstrip is a necessity. In reading up on these tv's I beleive thats what the mx series uses on the VGA port. If you use a scaler between the PC and the tv It will work without any extra software or drivers.

BTW, Those manuals have a few diffrences from the HM95 series, I wouldnt rely on them to tell you to much, As far as I know there are no E-manuals available yet for are TV's.

ok, that's good to know. i can't afford any extra hardware so i think i'll be opting for powerstrip. in your post on the last page it sounds like you had an easy time setting it up too. ever since i first messed with "girder", i get nervous about new HTPC software!

the weekend i paid for the tv, BB said they'd moved 100 46HM95's from my local store alone and emptied out the warehouse they pull from of 800 total units.

$1500 X 800 = 1,200,000

over a mil on one model, one weekend, from a single warehouse, not even counting backorders like mine... you'd think they could afford somebody to type up a .pdf for us.

I have recently purchased a 46hm95 and love it, but I have only had the TV for a week or so. I am now having issues with the TV as I am attempting to get a cable card working in the TV and it just don't work. I installed the card with the cable company's service tech right there and with a reboot of the TV it took and all is well. Later that evening I switched the video input from ANT1 to video to watch a DVD and when I switched back the card didn't work. I have contacted the cable company and also Toshiba and nothing worked. Toshiba was great and they are sending me out a firmware upgrade that they think may fix the problem but the person I spoke to was not really sure it would. Has anyone else had this problem???

I own the 46HM95. Love the PQ most of the time, but dark scenes need drive me crazy. There's no differentiation between different shades of black or other dark colors....everything is just the same shade of pure black (the blackest the set can do). I've adjusted brightness and contrast all I can, but it doesn't do anything for distinguishing different shades of black. Are there any adjustments in the service menu, or any other solutions for helping this set create discernable hues?
Thanks

Second problem I had kinda scared me since set is only a week old. I turned on the set and the screen was red and rolled horizontally. I changed channels, inputs(didn't have same problem on other inputs), etc. I turned off set and back on and still had same problem. Turned off set a second time and then back on and fixed problem.

I've also experienced this problem. It takes several on/off cycles to return the picture to normal display. I thought it was the cable box but determined it's the TV.

Anyone know what is causing this?

Thanks.

I ordered a 62HM195 from Buydig and received it Friday, delivered by Manna. The box looked fine. The TV looked fine and worked fine for 2 days. The remote was a bit finicky, but otherwise all was well. We turned the TV off about midnight Sat night, and went out the next morning. When we went to turn it on Sunday at about 8pm, then fan was still running. We watched it for about 4 hr and turned it off. The yellow light on the front started blinking and the fan wouldn't go off even after several minutes. We turned off the surge supressor it was plugged in to. Turning it on this morning the screen was blank. The yellow light blinks and that's it. The blue light does not blink at all. Any thoughts? I would describe more but am at work and don't have time. Thanks.

Is this true for all inputs? What type of connection (cable) are you using? Have you tried various factory pre-sets, sports/movie etc? These sets can crush blacks but not to the extent you're talking about unless brightness is down in the 20s. If you've tried raising/lowering brightness and contrast to no avail and your source/connection has been ruled out I'd say your set is not operating properly. I'm able to easily adjust brightness high enough on test patterns to make darkest black (7.5 ire) an obvious shade of grey.

Joe,

I sure hope the new firmware fixes both, or should I say, all of our problems with the cable card. Disabled TVGOS? How did you disable it and what improvements did that make? Seems my TVGOS is nearly perfect. The only thing being is my set will not get all the channels the card is supposed to be allowing. For instance, all digital channels start with channel 100. Channel 100 and 101 will not work but 102 does. Most other digital channels don't work either. My high-end HD channels work but no sound unless I tune to channel 102 first and get audio to pass from it. I'm supposed to be getting maybe 30-40 digital music channels. The antenna thingy shows full reception, but no audio/video. I also have a HD STB from my cable company. Seems everything works through it, leaving the issues all on the cable card.
Again, I sure hope the 1.2.8 firmware does fix this crap. Paying for all the movie channels and can only get HBOHD to work, talking about a waste of money.

OK.. I'm though venting this week.

I just purchased a 72HM195 TV and I am kind of disappointed with it. When watching DVD movies and some Time Warner HD Cable channels there are lots of artifacts and pixels. When text is on the screen you can really see it.

I thought it was the TV being defective, so I exchanged it for another and still have the same problem.

I am using a Panasonic DVD-S77S player and the upconvert is set to 1080i. I have tried a HDMI cable and components to see if there is a difference and there is not. I have also exchanged the DVD player to make sure its not defective as well and also have changed out the cables. I was expecting to watch Crystal Clear movies on this TV since it suppose to upconvert o 1080p.

The only thing that looks awesome on this TV is my XBOX 360 so far.

Anyone have any ideas why the 72HM195 picture quality is not to good with HDTV and DVDs?

Any help would be appriciated.

thanks,

Most likely what you are seeing is referred to as macroblocking. Go to the standard Def DVD forum and hunt down the forum(s) for the Panasonic S77 or S97 forum. They discuss macroblocking in detail and even give tips to help correct it. You are not going to eliminate it I don't think. It occurs on just about all manufacturers TVs as well I think.

I now have the TV disconnected from everything. When I plug it in the fan starts and the yellow light blinks 3 times (no blue light), pauses, then repeats the 3 blinks. The screen is black and does not respond to any input. The 3 yellow blinks must mean something but that sequence is not addressed in the manual and Toshiba told my husband they don't know what it means. They also told him their techs only speak to repair people and he could not talk to a tech. The local repair guy claims he can't come out till Friday. I plan to call Toshiba now myself, but I was wondering if anyone has had a hard time getting a tech on the phone at Toshiba? Also, does anyone know what happens when the light engine goes out? I think this is more than just a bad bulb.

Some thoughts. Not sure how long you've waited in the cases you've described, but here are some normal operations of the TV:

- When you turn the TV off and have the Quick Restart feature turned on, the TV screen will go dark, the Yellow LED will flash about once every second, and the fans will stay on. The TV will stay in this mode for about 5-6 minutes before it shuts everything down completely (no LED, colling fan off).

- FYI - I have confirmed with Toshiba that you will hear a low power fan even when the TV is off since the tuner is always on in standby.

- When you unplug the TV and replug it, the TV will go through a reboot like a computer. During that time, the yellow LED will flash several times per second until the TV is ready. You can't use the remote during that time. It should only take about 15 seconds to finish the bootup so it sounds like yours is not coming up properly.

Check the manual for the normal operation of the features and flash codes.

didn't I read somewhere that that sequence means its booting, And you need to give it about 5 minutes to completely boot, I have also read in previous trouble threads that both hdmi connections and cablecard connections will cause problems with these tv's bootup sequence. Just a thought.

Joe,

The only thing being is my set will not get all the channels the card is supposed to be allowing. For instance, all digital channels start with channel 100. Channel 100 and 101 will not work but 102 does. Most other digital channels don't work either. My high-end HD channels work but no sound unless I tune to channel 102 first and get audio to pass from it. I'm supposed to be getting maybe 30-40 digital music channels. The antenna thingy shows full reception, but no audio/video.When you look at the add/delete channels menu are the channels that you aren't getting visible and unchecked or are they not even showing up. Unlike using a direct cable connection, when you insert the cable card it automatically scans the channels but you can uncheck the channels you don't want to show up.

I spoke with Toshiba I believe on Wednesday of last week and they told me 3-5 days for the new firmware. I hope it arrives today.

As far as disabling TVGOS, I don't set it up when asked to so the TV is not using it. It seems to be the only way to get my CC to work consistently.

I thought that the 42HM95 manual specifically said not to hook a computer up to it?

I just got mine, but it was broken out of the box from best buy. They are replacing it, but I'm waiting for it to get shipped from another store.

Hi, all! I purchased a 52H95 over the weekend. Overall I have been very satisfied with it so far. One problem did pop up this morning that does have me a little concerned, though...

I was just channel surfing and switched from a SD channe to an HD channel. I've noticed that when I do this the cable ox switches from a 420p output to 1080i. There is a slight delay and a few odd images (like miniatre screens) flash across the TV and then everything is fine. This morning, though, I switched to an HD channed from SD and when the picture came up the colors would flicker though a few different hues. It would loook fine then go to a blue hue, then red, the back to normal. It would repeat every few seconds, but there was not a set interval between the cycling.

I found that the only way I could correct it would be to switch back to an SD channel, then come back. I could usually repeat it by switching back and forth several times. I also tried shutting the TV or set-top box off and back on, but neither one fixed it. I had to go back to an SD channel every time.

Anyone know if this is the TV or the cable box (SA8300HD DVR) causing the problem?

Anyone know if this is the TV or the cable box (SA8300HD DVR) causing the problem?Sounds like the cable box to me but you could connect the cable right to the TV minus the cable box and see what happens. Your cable company should provide the locals in HD so you shouldn't need to box to view them. Unfortunately you won't have a channel list so you will need to ue the up channel on the remote to see where the stations are. Usually there will be a channel and sub channel using direct feed. For example, CBS is 15 using my cable box but 76-1 using direct feed. You will need to intiate the channel scan when using this method. Your user manual should explain how to do that.

This sounds like something my cable box does (Same box as yours.) Although I am not on cox, It has proven to be the box because it does the same thing regardless of the tv.

This is my first post so bear with me.. I am looking for DLP tv for sometime now and narrowed down to Samsung HLR5064, Toshiba 52" 52HM85 and SONY 50' KFE model in canada. The SONY is bit pricey and it's LCD so I almost bought samsung last night but sales man at futureshop offered me Toshiba 52" 52HM85 for $100 bucks more. I am confused now since I like samsung but I am getting Toshiba 52' rather than samsung 50" for 100 bucks more. Which one I should get ? Does anyone have toshiba or samsung ? Is 2" extra inches and Toshiba worth $100 ?
Your experience with toshiba and samsung, your feedback is appreciated..thanks

What is the native resolution for the 52HM84? 720P or 1080i? It's 720p. ;) but his question is about the 52HM85 which is also 720p. The main difference between this years models and last years is this years model uses the HD4 as opposed to the HD2+ chip used by the 84's.

Firmware arrived today and it was simple to install (on an SD card) using the TV's card reader.

Part Number 95Seine128

Firmware version 1.2.8
Looks like it's for a number of Toshiba TV's including the HM and MX Series.

I'll post Wednesday or Thursday to let you know if it fixes anything.

TVGOS is only on the 94,95, and 195 series sets and each of these has a card reader (CF/SD) for updating the firmware.

For those of you looking for replacement bulbs, my order from Partstore just arrived today (overnight), after I placed it last Wednesday. I had received an email on Friday that the item was backordered, but they're now apparently filling orders. For those of you that are waiting, this is hopefully good news.

I also requested a warranty replacement from Toshiba on the same day, but it still hasn't come.

FYI. If you're TV downloads listings and you're only missing some HD channels, then your TVGOS is working but some of the channels are OFF in TVGOS. Keep in mind that TVGOS does not provide listings for every channel, i.e. I get TNT-HD, but TVGOS only provides listings for the non-HD TNT.

But, to deal with the HD channels that are not being listed because they're downloaded as OFF in TVGOS, you need to go into SETUP/CHANGE CHANNEL DISPLAY, and scroll to the list of channels towards the end that are OFF. I had a few, like Discovery-HD. Just reset them to ON and they'll download on the next cycle.

I mostly notice it from my Media Center PC, connected via DVI-HDMI...because that is where I do the majority of viewing...but it is evident on other inputs as well.
Contrast and brightness are both set to 60 right now...but even when I raise brightness to 100, the blacks (which turn gray at that level) are still crushed together, and I can't distinguish varying shades.
I don't believe the bulb is dimming, because a) the set is less than 2 months old, and b) I usually have to keep it at low setting because high is sometimes too bright for my eyes.

Let me make it clear that I am not stating that the whole image is too dark. Bright colors look amazing. It's just that black/dark colors turn into one blob of pure black. On shows like Farscape, this is really annoying because all you can see are faces...everything else is just black. I was hoping there were some adjustments to be made outside of the normal on-screen menu to help with this.

When you look at the add/delete channels menu are the channels that you aren't getting visible and unchecked or are they not even showing up. Unlike using a direct cable connection, when you insert the cable card it automatically scans the channels but you can uncheck the channels you don't want to show up.

Well it is the darnest thing. It will find all of the channels available to me and they all will be checked. However the biggest portion of the channels everybody should get with basic digital will not work. Let's say my add/delete channel setup shows I should have channel 103 available. My local cable company offers this particular channel as part of a package and indeed I'm paying for that package. I tune to channel 103, the picture and the audio comes up fine but within 5 seconds the screen freezes just like a PC would lock up. I have the last pic availavle as a still image with no sound. I can still change to other channels and they may work or do just as channel 103 did.

I had asked for the digital tier along with the HD tier. I got my bill just yesterday to find they decided I needed even the movie channels, HBO, SHO, you name it. However the cable card will only tune in HBOHD. I hooked up the STB they left to discover that indeed I am capable of getting all of these movie channels. darn shame I didn't know this way sooner. Not only that but they delayed my billing for nearly two months, now my bill is ~ $177. OUCH Needless to say I'll probably be carrying back the HD STB as the ycahrge me nearly $14/month for it and the remote. Neither of which has been used for more than 4 hours the last month and a half.

Either way you need to demand that the cable company fix the problem as it sounds like one you can easily duplicate. Make sure they test your cable signal to insure it is meeting specifications. My cable company ended up adding an amplifier to my cable line. I have a cabel card and all of the channels work fine. I did have a problem one time where I would get the audio on a digital channel but not the video and I ended up doing a system reset to fix the problem. Other than that mine has worked fine since Toshiba went to 1.5.1 firmware.

I have a 46HM95 and can't seem to get any audio out of my HDMI cables. I've tried two different cables and when I change the input to HDMI, I get video but no audio. I am using a SA Explorer 3250 HD cable box and I don't see any settings on it that have anything to do with where the audio signal goes, but maybe it is confused by my using HDMI and Component outs at the same time?

The Toshiba's HDMI audio settings are "Auto" and something else, but I've tried setting it to both and niether give me any sound.

Just an update, After reading way to many posts on this board about the cable card issues I wrote a list of things to try to do to my Toshiba 46hm95 to resolve the CC issue. First of which was to reset all channels so that the TV didn't think that a channel was one thing and not another. Second I disabled the TVGOS and then shutdown and installed the card. When the TV came back up the Acquiring cable card screen came up so I left it sit for some time and sure enough it worked. I have all normal, digital and HD channels but at this point I do not have the TVGOS and me being me I want my cake and I want to eat it too. I went back in and enable the TVGOS and figured it would break the CC again but to my surprise it did not and all is working well. I did have one instance where I went to switch channels and the Acquiring Cable card screen came up again so I went to the menu/cablecard area and looked at the signal from some of the channels and when I exited all was working again. So I am happy now and I still have the firmware update in route to me just in case but I am curious if this is the end of my problems........

I have the same TV and I believe the same S/W from August and will not plan on F/W upgrades at this time as I don't have any major issues and would rather not fix it if it ain't broken.

The THINC port will probably not be a method for downloading new F/W (at least not at this time) as Toshiba would send it on a memory card.

Well guys it's been nice following this thread since I got my 46HM94, but it's time to move on. It has come my attention that DLP is not that great a technology and not the best for black level. Does that STB have an HDMI output? Or are you using DVI-HDMI to go from the STB to your TV? DVI is video only. If your STB has DVI output, you will need to use one of the other audio output methods on your STB.

I ask because my SA box only has DVI...I wasn't aware that they came with HDMI.

I keep getting different stories from customer support every time I call they project a longer and longer wait time last week they said it would be in today. Arrrrrrrgh….. :(I would check some authorized Toshiba repair centers in your area and see if you can purchase one. That's what I did when my 62HMX94 lamp went and Toshiba couldn't give me a date when they would be available. If you find one maybe you can get Toshiba to pay for the lamp or reimburse the service center. It's worth a shot considering how long you have waited.I'm sure you don't want to have to buy one but at least you will have a spare when Toshiba finally sends you a replacement. If you do decide to do that make sure you save the original lamp as you will need to send that back to Toshiba. Mine went out last Friday and I confirmed with Toshiba that my replacement went out yesterday 2nd Day FedEx but that's still almost a week and I wouldn't want to be without my set that long, much less as long as you have been waiting. You can find authorized repair centers on the Toshiba web site in case you want to persue that angle. Good luck and I'm sorry to hear about your bad luck.

Strange, I have those 2 options and then 1 option for HDMI. Sounds like a problem with the box, I'd call TW. My sound won't work at all (on HDMI input) unless the box is set to HDMI.

I've not gone into the service menu, so I'm not sure how many hours was on the lamp. I did buy an extended warranty and my repair person tells me the lamp is on order and will be in on Monday....we shall see.

Hey everyone, this is my first post and I had a couple of questions about the Toshiba 46hm95 dlp tv that I am thinking about purchasing.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys provide.

My first question concerns the generation of the chip inside of the tv, is it the most recent technology or is it the previous generation of chips that have had many problems in the past?

Secondly, as far as calibration goes, is it hard to do? I consider myself very good with electronics, since it is what I do for a living, and.

Third, these bulb problems I am reading about are scaring the crap out of me! How bad is the fail rate on these bulbs? Does anyone have one of these tv's that they are happy with?

How does this television, in your guy's opinion compare to the samsung HL-R4266W, other than the screen being 4 inches smaller? The reason I ask this is because I am either going with the samsung or the toshiba.

I would check some authorized Toshiba repair centers in your area and see if you can purchase one.

Thanks kdog

Checked a 200 mile radius from Columbus, OH no luck.
I guess I would drive 400 mile round trip and pay $329
For a lamp to see the rest of the NFL season in HD.

Not sure if this is right or not but I understand the 62HM95
Has only been in the stores since July and uses a higher voltage lamp
150 Volts. Toshiba says they have 2000 coming in
on the next shipment but then that’s today’s story  .

Just a thought since a lot of people are talking firmware updates.
As a computer tech I update firmware all the time that changes timing
and voltage to the memory and cpu’s I wonder if some of the short lamp life
could be corrected in firmware down the road. Hell it may not even be a lamp issue
I mean after all mine and lots of others on here didn’t just go out they exploded
Seems it would take quite the spike in voltage to do that.

Oh well thanks

I was mistaken. I do have the 8300 HD, but when I go into settings for digital audio out my only two options are: "Dolby Digital" or "Two Channel Only". I see no option for HDMI?

I have the 3250HD box, or at least that's what I think it is. I ran the optical straight out of it to my receiver, a Harman Kardon, and it works fine. But I also had to run RCAs to it as well. Both the optical and the RCAs are ran to video 1 input on the receiver. As long as the source materials is digital it auto chooses the proper audio format. If the channel I'm tuned to is an analog station it will send audio via the RCA cable and then I can chose the format I want, Dolby, Dolby PLII or even Logix 7, it's entirely up to me.

Walk1355,

I was comparing the 46hm95 to the 46" samsung that was right next to it at BB. To me they were equal in PQ. I have perfect natural vision but I don't know that I have quite the eye that is necessary for doing tv reviews. But between the two, I think it is very close. Others may tell you the Toshiba is better and others may tell you the Sammy is better.

I Ordered the Tosh at BB when they had a big sale on it over thanksgiving, so there was a $600 difference in price at that time and made it a no-brainer.

I too am scared about the bulb consumption on these dlp's, particularly the Toshiba's. I say you buy a good ew that covers bulbs and rest assured.

BTW, maybe your local BB will have the tosh sitting right next to the sammy for easy comparison. IMHO, they both had equally stunning PQ on high def and equal color/contrast.

Good luck to both of us.

i was actually comparing the toshiba to the 42 inch sammy because they are priced exactly the same at best buy, hte toshiba actually looked better to me, but the whole bulb thing is scaring the crap out ofme.

good luck with your new purchase though.

i was talking with a friend tonight who is a 61' sammy dlp owner and he was looking around for some deals and we came accross the 50' sammy dlp for 1499, and i think i changed my mind indefinitely now, i will probably just get the sammy.

oh yeah, in case you were wondering, that price is new and it is at a local retailer in my city. I called them to check earlier tonight and it is the current gen. too.

I've also experienced this problem. It takes several on/off cycles to return the picture to normal display. I thought it was the cable box but determined it's the TV.

Anyone know what is causing this?

Thanks.

Have been there and done that with my 52HM84. Essentially, you got a lemon; I learnt it the hardway. Its a faulty DMD board, involves lots of pain to get the board shipped and installed by a decent service tech. I would strongly recommend on returning the TV if that is possible.

I called today as well and got the same thing. They show that they are supposed to send me one but they do not show it as shipped or that they even have any in the warehouse. That makes no sense as you called before me. I was given a FedEx tracking number and it indeed shipped out Tuesday from Nashville, Tennessee and is on the truck for delivery today.

So far the firmware upgrade seems to have fixed my TVGOS and the CC. Everything is working fine now and all I need to do is go in and tweak the TVGOS settings to display the stations I want in the order I want.

It's a night and day improvement compared to how it worked before.

Walk and Audiotech...I bought the 46hm95 when it was on sale the day after Thanksgiving...Received it on Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Bulb was dead out of the box, had the delivery people take it back and ordered another. It was also dead, so I opted for the refund. I liked the looks of the unit, but I didn't want to wait until mid-February when they told me the bulbs would be in. based on the 2 units, when I make my decision again, the Toshiba better be really cheap or it's off my list.

I think it's a smart idea of ordering the spare as even if Toshiba has them in stock it will take you at least three days to get a replacement. I'm using the one Toshiba sent me as a spare and I guess the only downside is that whenever I do need to use it it will be outside the 180 warranty period from Toshiba. Let's hope the one I have now last longer than the last one.

Why wouldn't you use the one you paid for (and know is a working lamp)as a spare and put the RMA one from Toshiba in the TV? If for no other reason than to make sure it's a good lamp unit.
Wouldn't you hate to go and try to use it after 180 warranty period only to find out that it was DOA. Just a thought!

Jetsss, I've read alot about this and after all that reading the answer is "it depends". It depends on several factors. Antenna's definitely work if those factors are in your favor. Your best bet is to go to antennaweb.org, enter your address and you'll get a good idea of the DT broadcast coverage in your area, what type of anntenna will work best for you and what stations you can expect to receive. But your single best source of information on this is to go to the Local HDTV Info and Reception forum and look for the thread for your area...there will be lots of posts there of others' trial and error experience. Good luck!

Keep in mind that regardless of what setting you have for the lamp, the TV will always start in Bright Mode, even if you have it set to Low Mode. After about a minute, it will then switch to Low Mode if that's what you have it set to.

Unfortunately, you're bulb was just ready to go. :(

Ok, a few questions about my 1 week old 46HM95 if i may....

#1. For some reason, via HDMI, im am getting a constant blue flash... Happens during 1080i and 720p broadcasts. Every 3-5 seconds viewing 1080i and every 10 seconds or so via 720p, looses all color info and everything turns blue. Gonna try component for the time being to see if the HDMI cable is indeed the trouble. Tried the second HDMI input, same thing. Also, it just started this tonight when i rerouted the cable for my new entertainment center, perfect up until tonight.

#2. I am having the same issue as the poster above me except mine is via a SD 8300 HD DVR box from Brighthouse Networks. When the audio is sent via HDMI, if i turn the tv speakers on, i can hear the sound, but it will not output via the Optical Audio out into my reciever. Could this be something involving HDCP? The optical audio out works perfect running directly from the SA 8300 into my sony dream theater dvd/HT system, but it seems as though the Optical Audio out on the tv isnt working.

maybe you have to turn some option in the TV on. Or maybe the TV cannot separate an Audio signal from the video when using an HDMI??

What box do you have from Brighthouse?? You might try the HDTV Area section of this forum. You will find Orlando if you don't find Sarasota, those guys all have BH and may be able to help.

The blue screen sounds like either your jackpack is screwed up or your entire TV has a problem. If you have not bought an extended warranty I recommend it. These Toshiba's seem to be problematic but have excellent PQ. I ordered the same one that you have. Comes in next week, I am excited.

The SA 8300 is definately outputting the audio via the HDMI cable because with the tv speakers on, i can hear it. The TV just wont relay that signal via the Optical Audio out to my reciever. The only option the TV has is 'Dolby Digital' or PCM. Neither work (although PCM wouldnt be what i need)

I purchased the tv a week ago from BB so if its something major with the blue flashing, im just getting a replacement...

I also bought it with my Amex w/ 1 additional warranty year, i wonder if that covers bulbs.

Okay I just bought the 52hm95 from hhgregg witha 5 year warranty, so no worries about the bulb problems, becuase the warranty covers an infinite amount of bulbs and any other problems, obviously. The guy at hhgregg absolutely hooked me up too.

I walked out of hte store and spent only 2280 dollars after tax and everything, that included the tv, a free 200 stand that he threw in, and the five year warranty. he took 600 bucks off the sale price of the tv, it was unbelievable.

i advise buying high end electronics from a store where the employees are commission based, because it enables you to wheel and deal with them just like buying a car.

the tv i bought is on sale at bestbuy for 2250 at best buy and i got it for 1750 at hhgregg.

Assuming there's not a problem with the TV, here are some restrictions on the optical audio output:

• Some audio systems may not be compatible with Dolby Digital bitstream signals. Older audio systems that are not compatible with standard optical out signals may not work properly, creating a high noise level that may damage speakers or headphones. THIS DAMAGE IS NOT COVERED BY YOUR WARRANTY.
• The DIGITAL AUDIO OUT terminal outputs signals only when receiving digital broadcasts with the TV in single-window mode.
• The DIGITAL AUDIO OUT terminal may not output some digital audio sources because of copy restrictions.

Can you get it to work on any digital broadcasts?

Guys,
I'm pretty sure I had the very same issues with audio. Seems like I found the STB would not output digital audio if it wasn't receving digital audio. Same goes for the TV. I ended up hooking both the optical cable and RCA jacks from the TV and STB to my receiver. I can watch the LED display on my receiver when I change stations and see it swap from optical input to analog. So far this is the only way I've been able to maintain audio continuously. Hope this helps.

Does your STB have a digital Coax "out"? If so, in addition to what you have connected I would suggest running a digital coax cable from your STB to your receiver.

This is what I had to do with my DVD player and it works fine.

Good luck.

In the past I have always treated the TV strictly as a monitor and sent all audio signals directly from the source to the reciever. The less routing you do through other components the better the audio quality will be anyway.

In the past I have always treated the TV strictly as a monitor and sent all audio signals directly from the source to the reciever. The less routing you do through other components the better the audio quality will be anyway. You all need to run the digital audio connection from the STB directly to the receiver and connect two channel RCA to the TV if you want to get audio without using the receiver. This is because I don't believe the optical out from the TV will send DD 5.1 from anything other than the ANT connection. When I connected my DVD player with HDMI>HDMI I could only get PCM from the optical output. I do, however, get it from my cable connection on ANT1. I don't think the HMDI input has the ability to pass the signal and converts the audio to 2 channel PCM to be used by the internal speakers.

Another poster indicated he didn't get any audio unless he turned off the internal speakers on his 95 model but I never had to do that with mine. Unfortunately PCM is not what I wanted so I just ran a digital coax from the DVD player directly to the receiver.

Another 46HM95 question....

HD looks fantastic, SD isnt bad at all, but DVD's (Component via my Sony FR1 Dreamtheater DVD/HT System) looks like ass... Its almost as if the picture is washed out, to be honest, i prefer watching SD cable, rather than dvd's because at least SD is fairly sharp.... I tried watching Star Wars and was utterly unimpressed.

I have my SA 8300HD DVR box set to upscale everything at a lower res to 1080i and it looks great, so I am assuming that the TV is not doing such a good job at upscaling the 480p signal from the dvd player on its own.

Any recommended players that might help me out here?

The samsung looks to be nice (HD-850 i think), but what about the Sony model? Obviously, i want to stay as cheap as possible, but $20-30 diff wont make a big deal.

Also, regarding my posts last night....

The blue flashing stopped when using the component inputs, so either 1) The HDMI cable went bad, 2) the HDMI output on my SA8300HD went bad.

as far as the DVD player... I highly recommend the Sony DVPNS70H

it's inexpensive, and upconverts without the evil faroudja chip...

It truly is just barely worse quality than HD... as long as the DVD is decent quality...

I compared it by using Arrested Development DVDs as compared to Arrested development in HD...

If you need a few more bells and whistles, sony also makes a 90H model...

If the HDMI connection to the 8300HD box was working fine for a while and starts having problems you should try a power on reboot (power off the 8300HD and then unplug it).

The HDMI connection between my 62hm84 and the 8300HD was working fine for a while before the picture started to jitter left-right by one pixel every few seconds. A power on reboot of the 8300HD fixed the problem.

Well, I just took delivery of my 72hm195. The picture in hd mode is gorgeous. In sd mode it is alright as long as I set back from the set, which I normally do :-). I can't complain thus far. Hopefully, they have fixed the light issue with this newer set. Any body figure out how to access the service menu to check the bulb hours yet on this set?

Thanks,

Ken
