View Full Version : The Toshiba DLP (HM/HMX) Owners Thread
agent99 02-17-06, 11:49 PM The lamp in my 62HM195 just went out (pop) after exactly three months from the order date. Probably somewere close to 500 hours on the set. Called Toshiba CS and (surprise, surprise) it's on back order. Nice display on the Toshiba but it's not that great without a lamp. If I had it to do over, I would consider buying the Sony LCD XBR.
jumpinjoe 02-18-06, 01:48 PM Anyone else running the latest firmware version 1.31 for the HM195 series?
Toshiba called me today to say they have a fix for the CableCard issues and that they would be sending me version 1.31 asap. It's specifically designed to take care of the CableCard issues.
Hope they are right :)

Joe: Do you mean 1.3.1? I'm still on 1.2.8 and CC works fine for me so far. Did they tell you what CC problems that s/w fixes?
I bought the 52HM95 Sept.29. The bulb popped the Wed. before the Super Bowl. Yea week before the SB. I thought this is F'd up. i have to buy a new bulb every 4 months? I called Toshiba on Thurs. They told me the same story that I have read from all of you that have had bulb problems. Backorder....5 days. I thought that was cool 5 days i read on the net back order 2-3 weeks 5 days not too bad. The bulb shows up Monday after the Super Bowl! It only took 5 days to have it in my hand. so as toshiba is telling everyone all this back oorder stuff, you may get lucky and it doesn't take as long as they say it will.
As for the bulb not being redsigned. Maybe not but it is different in that the side against the fan is now open. Will that make a difference only time will tell.

My bad, must be 1.3.1
They said it should fix the problems with the TV freezing up and losing the channel line up. This only happens when I go to CBS HD.
If your works then I'd simply guess that there is not a problem with Comcast/Toshiba/SA CC's. And there is a compatiability issue with some Cable co's and their CC's with the Toshiba set.
I'll post back after I do the install sometime next week.

Is the firmware for the MX series the same as the HM series? I've got a MX running 1.2.4 and would like to upgrade. Why don't a couple of y'all be a pal and upload the new firmware to a site we can download from?
I bought 62HMX95 just yesterday. I've noticed a grey bar on Right side of the screen. It's a straight line and very much visible on white background. TV looks great otherwise but it's annoying. I'm still waiting for my HDTV connection but it's on standard cable and dvd watching. Any help or advice.
mack8589 02-20-06, 01:01 AM FOr those you have a similar tv, can you tell me if one of the cooling fan on this model runs 24/7? Based on the manual, cooling fans shut off but on my tv (62HM15A) it has been running all day. Not sure if it is a defect or normal (but it is annoying). I appreciate any feedback
Shaner1 02-20-06, 06:43 AM While watching my 52HMX94 over the weekend I noticed a greenish tint rectangle in the top left side of the screen. It starts from the top, goes about 4 inches down and the length is almost have of the screen. I really noticed it while watching Cast Away on ABC (in HD). After that I really had to look for it but could see it a few times on different broadcasts.
Anyone else see something like this with their TV?
I've had a lot of issues with the TV that I can live with but lately I've had a few that are really starting to bother me. This one is the newest and the other is that I lose either my analog or digital channels on a regular basis now. When it happens I have to pop the cablecard out and put it back in, it gets the channel info again and then I'm good to go... until it happens again that is, which could be the next day or even the same day. It's usually when I turn the TV on, sometimes it happens when I change the input.
I bought an extended warranty and plan on using it. I know they can't fix the cablecard issue and I'll have to wait for another firmware release. I have the latest, 1.5.8, for my model.
Anyone else see anything like the green rectangle on their TV? Also, what about the cablecard problem? I did a search on both and found nothing on the green rectangle, I did find a ton of info on cablecards but no solutions so I thought I'd ask.
Thanks,
Shane

Thanks,
ShaneShane, I have a cable card and once they got it working I've never lost the channels or had the lock up you describe. I have Comcast and the Motorola card if it's any help. I've also had several versions of firmware and once I went to 1.5.1 or 1.5.2 mine was worked without incident so I question if it's a Toshiba problem or more likely a card or cable provider issue. Has your provider checked the signal strength of your signal? Comcast ended up putting an amplifier on my line as it wasn't meeting the specs.
Also, the rectangle issue is something I haven't seen with my set. Sorry, I couldn't be more help.

I have Wide Open West and a Scientific Atlantic cablecard. They have tested the signal twice and it was right where it's supposed to be. Maybe I'll look into an amplifier.
The rectangle problem was driving me crazy during Cast Away. It was only during dark scenes, especially when he was on the raft. I really have to look for it to find it during other viewing, even then I doubt myself if I'm seeing it or not. But during Cast Away it was very evident. I watched a movie yesterday with dark scenes and couldn't see the green box...
I'm going to put in my DVE or Avia DVD to see if any of the screens show off the green box.
Thanks for the response.
jumpinjoe 02-20-06, 10:26 AM There are different firmware versions depending on which hm or mx series you have.
I own a 72hm195 and the latest firmware is 1.2.8 which was developed to fix many of the problems with TVGOS.
I have Adelphia cable and a SA CableCard. It seems like there are compatiability issues with some cable providers and some CableCards and it's up to Toshiba to fix these problems on their end.
Firmware 1.3.1 is available and I think I will be one of the first to receive it. Toshiba was nice enough to call me to let me know it's available. They said it was developed to specifically fix the CableCard issues.
I lose the channel line up and the TV locks up so I hope this fixes things. I will keep my fingers crossed and will post back after the install.
If I had a Moto Card and Comcast and things worked great then I may not want to upgrade to 1.3.1.
http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/customersupport/updates_notices.asp This site has long been used for the notification of consumer product issues, recall, even replacement of some products in the past.Wouldn't hurt to glance over here occasionally to see if this is truly a gross problem with the bulbs.Well actually, its gross to all of us!

Are you telling me that the forum software intentionally corrupted the URL you entered? That is a sin. There's no other word for it. The developers should be sent to hell. Forever. Seriously.
I guess I will get to my post quota by insulting the forum software developers. That's appropriate.
Little Napoleonic jerks! Who do they think they are? You do not EVER corruprt data. Idiots. Morons. Imbeciles.
How many more posts do I need?
Well the URL is still corrupt, and I have more consideration for readers here than the little jerkwad developers do, so I'll stop now.
Dude, chill, just copy and paste in your browser search,if you get there cool,if you don't its ok too, should work though I did have a lot of trouble getting it to post for some reason.I have checked it though

I found out from some replies to my topic in the HDTV forum that others using different TV's have the green rectangle from ABC broadcasts. Shew! Scratch that issue... the cablecard is another story.

I know Toshiba ended up having to change the range of frequencies the cable card would accept due to Comcast using ones beyond what Cable Labs had specified. Perhaps WOW is using something beyond what the TV is expecting. You should volunteer to have the engineers come out to your house if they need to trouble shoot the problem. If you bought the TV to use the cable card they should work to get the problem resolved and you need to complain to the highest level if you are not satisfied in their effforts to resolve the problem.
thunder306 02-21-06, 01:59 PM Thunder,
If Bestbuy strings you along. I recommend dealing directly with Tosh. They replaced my TV.
well just called bestbuy service cause I'm coming up on week 6 here. They don't want to put the light engine or the digital board in. They are going to give me my money back and let me return the set!!!

Yes Paul has been the guy I'm working with. I haven't talked to him lately and have been waiting a few weeks now to hear back from him. I'll call again and leave him another message, this time I'll offer to let them test my TV and cable service.
Thanks for the tip!
traker1001 02-22-06, 12:36 AM Ok folks,
First of all, If anyone wants the firmware toshiba sent me, 1.3 i beleive, it is 8.3MB. All you would have to do is unzip it to a SD and put it in the tv, Just PM me your email. this will work in HM95 tv's.
Second a Question maybe someone can answer, I recently removed my cable card and went with basic cable, Channels 2 thru 74. When I did a channel scan I got extra channels I can't Identify, Channels 75-1 thru 75-7, channels 76-1 thru 76-7, channels 77-1 thru 77-7 and channels 78-1 thru 78-6. When I called the cable company they denied any existance of these channels. Now the entresting thing none of my other tvs get these channels, None have any digital tuner either. And the strangest of all I get all newer movies on these channels, Stuff like Hitchhikers guide, XXX state of the union, Batman Begins, Flight plan,Etc.. I have mediacom cable. Can anyone tell me what the heck these channels are?
GoreRanger 02-22-06, 01:19 AM Sounds like bleedover from their other channels. I got similar channels before Comcast installed my digital cable box. Haven't checked since then but they might still be there. The tech that came to my house said that happens.

IIRC the "extra" channels are the VOD stations they are broadcasting to other subscribers and you are able to view them because they tend to bleed over.
My guess is these will go away within a matter of days, perhaps weeks. My Cable company forgot to take back my stb and it worked for a couple of weeks until they updated their system to show I had no STB.

Can anyone tell me what the heck these channels are? When you use straight cable connection without the STB you are getting a channel and sub-channel (i.e. 76-1). The problem is there is not a documented list of what the channel and sub-channel are from the cable company and they will not be mapped the same as they would be using the cable card or a STB. For example, I have Comcast and CBS-HD would be 233 if using the cable card or STB but it is 76-1 using direct cable feed. The only way to figure out the mapping is to let the TV scan all the channels and then using the up or down channel button see what station is on that channel. It is very tedious and time consuming and depending on what the cable company broadcasts unencrypted you may or may not get many of the channels. At the minimum you should get the HD locals such as CBS,NBC, ABC, FOX, PBS and possibly ESPN. I also received all the digital music channels. I use a cable card now but here is what I had with Comcast.
1-1 NBC-HD
2-1 FOX-HD
3-1 PBS-HD
76-1 CBS-HD
114-1 ESPN-HD
Music Channels 93-4 thru 93-51
I never could locate ABC-HD before I got my cable card. I have also seen one channel that appeared if someone ordered a PPV movie and if they fast forwarded or rewinded the movie I would see that as well so perhaps that is what you are seeing with the newer movies.

I receive my local fox and NBC HD on 26-1 and 26-2, My music channels are 949+ I receive these with or without a cable card. The PPV sounds right, Because I was watching a movie yesterday and it just paused for about 2 minutes, then started playing again, It was Batman Begins, Watched though to the end w/o any more interuptions, then right at last of the credits my TV flipped to the next subchannel on its own which had HHG on.
I would think the cable company would do alittle more to prevent stuff like this happening, But hey I cant complain, With the exception of I wish these people would stop the Sex in the city reruns in there free channels. LOL.

Is this because they are encrypting here only,or am I nuts.Several people have said ALL comcast OTA HD is available without a STB..One poster even doubted I owned a 56HM195 w/ QAM tuner.I must be the only person who can't receive it.I;m sure OTA ant. would work. The fan is designed to run all the time. I believe there are actually two fans...one that runs all the time and the other that kicks in when the set is on...all normal.
The fan is designed to run all the time. I believe there are actually two fans...one that runs all the time and the other that kicks in when the set is on...all normal.Actually the one running 24/7 is to cool a CC(even if you don't have one)Another cools the tuner for TVGOS. AND lastly, when the tech replaced my LE (first week I had it) he said there is actually a THIRD fan to cool the set when running.I was told this. I asked how long they would last, was told" longer than any computer".Along with the fan running on my STB,makes for a lot of as energy usage.

Thats just not me.ThanksThe locals shouldn't be encrypted. What you would need to do is connect the cable to the ANT input and make sure in the programming that the ANT input is set for "cable" and not "antenna" and then perform a channel program. In the 2004 models:
INPUT CONFIGURATION
Press MENU and open the SETUP menu, highlight INSTALLATION and press ENTER. Open the TERRESTRIAL menu, highlight INPUT CONFIGURATION, and press ENTER. Press the right arrow to change the option for ANT1 or down arrow and right arrow to change the option for ANT2 and then highlight SAVE.
CHANNEL PROGRAM
Press MENU and open the SETUP menu, highlight INSTALLATION and press ENTER. Open the TERRESTRIAL menu, highlight CHANNEL PROGRAM and then press ENTER. Highlight the ANT input you have the cable feed plugged into and press ENTER to start the automatic channel programming. Once this is done you can access the CHANNEL ADD/DELETE option and it should provide a list of all the channels discovered. You can use the down arrow to scroll through all the channels. Most likely the HD channels will be on a obscure channel/sub-channel like mentioned in the previous posts and you will need to cycle through each channel discovered to determine where they are.
On another note altogether. The tech said they are replacing the entire LE for a lot of problems that are not that major. The object being, in my case,I could watch the set while waiting the time it would take to receive the replacement LE from Toshiba. The new LE is a 20 minute in house replaceable. They would have to take the set in if these lesser problems could not be diagnosed and repaired properly in house on first visit. So,If you get a new LE it is probably a refurb. Not that this implies anything.BTW: The invoice to Conn's was in the large peanut filled box from Tosh that my LE came in,as well as other parts ordered.I can tell you the mark up on this item from Tosh to us is 250%,really.Actually the site I used to look up retail on the LE part # revealed this part, if bought at their retail price, would cost $300 more than I paid for the set Of course ,if out of warranty, that would be plus labor. This is America,we're all entitled to a profit, but really.

Congrats on your new TV. Oh yeah your main programing will consist of just the HD's for a while. I actually watched a cooking show for an hour once because it was in High Def. My wife was amazed. My wife actually said the other day that she couldnt see us having anything smaller than the 52". I'm just waiting for all the rest of the HD channels to come....some day.....please.

Is anyone on here useing the Symbio 160HD4 HD Recorder if so how is it working out for you. Any Pros or cons?
enmoco is right but if you are looking for a unit like this don't get the Symbio. RCA makes the exact same unit and you can get it very cheap at hdtoystore.com, much cheaper than the Symbio. It's called the RCA DVR2160 and is exactly the same as the Symbio. I bought one from them and use it to record HD, SD and it works like a TIVO unit. You program it through TV Guide On Screen.
Check this thread out for more info on it: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=602499

I own the Symbio and it works just fine with the TV. Every now and then it gets a bit quirky but nothing real negative.
I would take the other posters advice and save some $$ by getting the RCA unit.
In fact, I may get one just to daisy chain it to my symbio :)
Thanks for the info.No wonder I couldn't make 'em work! ;) I was just trying to see if they would work when I first received this set, before STB.I'll know better next time and I'm sure someone today might appreciate your most helpful post .Thank you again.
Does the Terrestrial menu only become active once something is connected to it? I have my SA8300 HD STB connected to the TV via ColorStream HD1.
I've noticed there are quite a few menus that are inactive on my 56HM195.

I've noticed there are quite a few menus that are inactive on my 56HM195.That would be correct.I was fooling around last night and connected through a splitter to Ant.1 and ran through menu as kdog044 suggested and all the terrestrial menu items worked.
kdog044 02-23-06, 06:49 PM That would be correct.I was fooling around last night and connected through a splitter to Ant.1 and ran through menu as kdog044 suggested and all the terrestrial menu items worked. Also, if you have a cable card some of the menu's are disabled as well. You can't choose the "cable or "antenna" option and the channel program is disabled as it is done automatically when you insert the card. You can delete channels in add/delete channel menu once they are recognized.
kcsouth 02-23-06, 08:08 PM Sound Problem,
I have a 46hm95; when a loud noise on the tv program occurs the sound shuts off. I change the channel and then back to the original channel and the sound is back. This happens more so on the History Channel when a gun is fire.
Any thoughts.
Joe
I have been waiting for this for some time now. I have had cable card problems with two different Toshiba's with Time Warner. Hope it fixes the problem - lately I have been losing my cable channels about 4 times a week.
Yes Paul has been the guy I'm working with. I haven't talked to him lately and have been waiting a few weeks now to hear back from him. I'll call again and leave him another message, this time I'll offer to let them test my TV and cable service.
Thanks for the tip!
I was also working with Paul and a guy at Time Warner. They did all kinds of line tests and ran new line from the street to my house and have tried different CC from Scientific Atlanic. Been having problems with the Cable Card since November. Originally bought an HMX and now have an MX model.
I haven't followed up in awhile as I just don't have the time to devote my life to fixing a television. Hopefully this firmware upgrade will work.
About how long does it take to assemble the ST6285 stand (for the 62HM195)? Can it be done conveniently by a single person?
Does anyone agree with me that it's unsatisfactory that a "white glove" delivery service leaves a huge television sitting on the floor next to a disassembled stand?
I can get the stand delivered first, and build it, but that will cost an additional $50 delivery charge on top of the already very steep "white glove" charge for the TV. Ugh.

In my opinion forget white glove...have them bring it into your door....build the stand yourself...then have the wife help you lift it up...thats what I did...these TV's are light.... ;)

I just put one together last week. It was done easily by myself. It took me about 1.5 hours. The stand is great, the only issue I have with it is the depth of the shelf from the front of the glass to the back support. Two of my components are I would say about 17" front to back, one being my DVD player with turntable for discs. I have them sitting a little bit over the front edge. Most newer components are going to be fine. I agree that "white glove" is a joke if they are not going to put together your TV stand and place the TV before they leave.

I'll second that statement. I was the "white glove" delivery for my set. I picked it up from Sears myself. I got it home in a van and had a buddy help me bring it into the house and lift it into the entertainment center.
While you certainly don't want to be throwing these things around, they are pretty light. They're just too darn big to get your arms around to do it all yourself. :D
bkazepis 02-24-06, 09:57 AM Just thought I'd share the stand I built for my TV. Being that there has been talk lately about stands and I'm soo proud of the one I built :D . I actually wanted to buy the matching stand but due to space issues where I wanted to put the TV I had to build the top where the TV rests bigger than the bottom. I also thought that the shelves on the factory unit were not deep enough so I made mine 20 inches deep. I also made the bottom free floating and not attached to the top so I can pull it out to work on wires etc. The wife likes it so Im set.. :)
BasicCable 02-24-06, 12:21 PM Hi I have a 52hm94 and have noticed what seems to be less detail in dark scenes than what I had when the tv was newer. Some times it almost seems to be a green tint rather than black. And very big loss of detail.
Has anyone else tv started to do this after it got older?(Mine is about 1yr 1mn old) I tried calabarateing it but that was no help. Maybe it was always there and I'm just now noticing it but I just don't remember it being this bad. Any ideas guys?
I live up a flight of stairs, and I have a bad back. I'm not in a financial position that allows me to laugh off a $2500 TV bounced down the stairs by either me or a friend. I don't expect big tears of sympathy, but delivery at least to the room the TV is destined for is pretty much essential.
But I figured out what to do. I'm going to buy the stand at the cheapest online place I can find. Also for the TV (assuming really good ratings). I got a very reassuring note form my latest candidate place for the TV: they don't even offer faux white glove -- just inside front door. And they went on to suggest that I make a private deal with the actual workers to get the thing to where in the house I want it. This is business I can understand. The first place I checked out had a great combined price for the TV and stand but had an extremely rigid set of policies about curbside delivery and additional money for faux white glove delivery -- really just in-house dropoff at a very high price. I'm sure the workers who deliver my TV will be glad to schlep it upstairs for $50. (If they drop it, they've got insurance!) I guess I can risk getting it on the stand with a little help.
Thanks for your suggestions and info on the stand.
I'll post my initial impressions (and lamp and unit times) when I get the thing installed. I guess maybe two to three weeks from now.
piturra 02-24-06, 01:14 PM About how long does it take to assemble the ST6285 stand (for the 62HM195)? Can it be done conveniently by a single person?
I second Traveler62 the ST6285 stand is easily assembled by one person, ... around 1-1/2 hours, taking your time & following the instructions. The instructions are very clear and all you need is hammer (for some stubborn dowel pins), flat and phillips head screw driver.
The items are completely wrapped in plastic, and each item, including glass shelf is insulated from each other for transportation.
Another benefit by using the integrated Toshiba Stand besides matching the 56HM195 shape is the six lock points that stabilizes the 56HM195 to the stand. Add to that the rear tie-down strap (safety retaining device) that's located directly underneath one of the housing screws on the back of the 56HM195 and you've got a unit (56HM195 & ST5685) that is locked together as one. Well worth the $299 price - shipped IMHO! My stand came a week later after my 56HM195 from another Internet vendor.

I bought my 56HM195 from Amazon (pre-Superbowl - yes it came a week before) and there was only one shipping charge = $149. When they delivered (from an 18-wheeler) they wanted to unpackaged it out on the sidewalk and bring the TV into my HT/family room, but since I wanted to unpackaged it myself, ... I just ask them to take the box into my HT/family room which they did! So I guess that was a 'white glove' service!
Phil
Thanks everyone for the advice and pictures.
Living in San Francisco, the secure mount for the TV on the stand can't hurt, though I guess in the event of an 8.0 the whole combined thing will be flying around the room. :)
I've used Amazon in the past for a TV (my current 32" Toshiba CRT) and I was very, very impressed by the Eagle delivery service. One guy schlepped the thing in, unpacked it, put it on my stand and took everything away for the normal delivery fee. Not bad. But Amazon is way too pricy compared to other online vendors for the 62HM195. I'd use them again without hesitation if I could afford it.

Toshiba does say that if you have a significant degradation in picture it may be a sign that the bulb is on its way out, do you know how many hours you have on it?
Phreshness 02-24-06, 05:09 PM Ok folks,
First of all, If anyone wants the firmware toshiba sent me, 1.3 i beleive, it is 8.3MB. All you would have to do is unzip it to a SD and put it in the tv, Just PM me your email. this will work in HM95 tv's.
Could you please email a copy? I think I sent you a PM with it, if not, let me know and I'll get it to you.
Thanks!
Well I got my 56HM195 the beginning of January '06. Yesterday the picture was really really dark from what it was previously. It also seemed to be having a hard time coming on (blinking lights and such). Set the bulb to super bright, and brightness level to 100%. Is watchable, but still somewhat dark.
Went ahead and called Toshiba. They are sending out a new bulb. Said currently on back-order, and will ship out in 10-15 days.
*sigh* Having a party this weekend, and was looking forward to really showing it off. Will have to wait on that.
I do love the TV. The picture (when the bulb was working right) was just plain gorgeous. If had to do it again, I would get the TV again in a heartbeat. Just sucks about the bulb. Hopefully the new one will last somewhat to what is advertised. Heh.. 1.5 months isn't very long for this one.
agent99 02-24-06, 09:29 PM They (Toshiba CS) told me a lamp would ship out in about seven days, that was two weeks ago. Now they are saying 10-15 days more. This is rediculous - that makes it over a month waiting on a frigging bulb. Should've gotten that Sony -Costs more but it works. Well I did get to watch it for 10 weeks. I just gave away my old Toshiba 61 inch CRT, still going strong after over ten years without a single problem.
traker1001 02-24-06, 10:56 PM 61 inch CRT...
Yeah but I bet it left a small indentation in your floor.
nbdyspl 02-25-06, 08:25 AM I have also been waiting since the day after the super bowl for my replacement.First was told 7-10 days.Called yerterdaty the CS said it would be another 10-15 days.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I received my new replacment lamp from Toshiba yesterday. I ordered it Monday. I was happy that it only took 5 days since they told me 7-10. My non technical wife installed it because I was at work. So far so good. When I came home I turned off the high bright setting which I had it on before and ajusted the settings to compensate. I later went into service mode and it said lamp had 166 hours. Since the lamp was very brand new. it said it had a manufacture date of February 12th 06 on the box It looks like the TV doesn't reset itself when you install a new lamp.
Both of you have the same lamp.I would suggest that you get together. This was posted today on the 1080p thread.

Very nice! Is your stand specifically made to work in a corner? Last year, when my family and I were house hunting, I specifically looked for houses that had a corner mount fireplace in the living room so I wouldn't have to mess with trying to get a TV stand (not to mention speakers, etc...) crammed into a corner. But, if I had a stand like yours, it wouldn't have mattered that much. Are your speakers mounted to the TV, or on the walls behind it?
BTW - that's a heck of a design concept you have there, especially with the free-floating bottom shelves. I may not have looked hard enough, but I don't ever recall seeing a stand like this available commercially. Given the practical benefits, you might have something to make a few bucks off of!
Ugh.. I can't believe it has taken so long to get the bulb for you all. Hopefully will be in soon, and the new "10-15 days" is not more smoke.
That blows me away. I was the one that posted that it only took me 5 days. Did you ask to speak to a supervisor when you ordered your lamp the first time. I was rather pushy when I called and had them have a supervisor call me back and when he did I made a real issue about the exhisting lamp only lasting 2 weeks. I wasn't rude though and he stated it would be here at Tuesday the latest but he did say their would be a slight chance they would receive an early shippment and that I could get it by friday. I wasn't really holding my breath after all I've read on this forum about their customer service. I spoke to my Brother yesterday exhisting Toshiba DLP owner and he said he read an article in wired magazine regarding our 95 series sets giving it very high praise. I just find it remarkable that this set has such a poor track record on it's bulbs yet every article I've read or heard about it loved it so much.
Well my bulb just blew about 10 minutes ago. *sigh* Didn't last too long after it went dark. May have to try calling back Toshiba and talking to a supervisor since it is totally unwatchable now. Thanks for the tip, Oifvet! Will have to wait till Monday I think though to call .

Thanks for your kind words. The problem you mention is exactly the same one I had. My fireplace is on one wall...another wall is practically all windows..and the only place to put the TV was in the corner..so I built a corner shelf with two legs..the back mounted to the studs in the wall...and the shelf unit underneath just the right height and depth to fit the center channel and the components..the key was to make it not fixed to the upper shelf..this affords easy access to all the spaghetti in the back...as far as the speakers they are mounted to the wall...I thought about making something to have them hang on the sides of the TV but I didnt want vibration to effect the TV.... :)
fiji4118 02-25-06, 10:32 PM Hi all. So I just purchased a 56HM195 yesterday. Love the HD picture! Amazing, but I do have a connection problem I am hoping someone can help with. Probably something simple I am missing but I can't get it to work. I have Comcast and have component video directly for that box (motorola DCT6412 III). That picture is great. The audio goes from the cable box to my receiver (Onkyo TX-DS676, I know older but I am not changing it out for a while if I can help it). All of my components go into the receiver and then to the tv by way of coax. While I eventually will change this it is run though a wall and it is going to take some time. I plugged the coax into the antenna 1 coax on the back of the tv and I get nothing. No DVD, VCR and I still have the cable going into the receiver and all I get is white fuzz. Can anyone give me some insight to get this working?
Thanks all and thanks for this thread as it is a lot of the reason I went with this tv!

When you say coax do you mean RF Cable?
Whats the newest firmware update for the 52hmx94? By the way our bulb just blew yesterday(under abt electonics warrenty, thank god we bought the warenty!)

Posts: 2 Help Please with Sony purchase and set up
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi all. New to the forum and hoping I can get some assistance with an upcoming purchase. I an looking at a Sony KDP-57WS655. I like the picture compared to others I have seen. I'd love some opinions. Also I am wonder about the best way to connect it. I have Comcast digital cable running through an older Onkyo receiver. I am guessing that I will have to bypass the receiver to get HDTV. What kind of cable is recommended? Just a video and still run the audio from the cable box to the av receiver? HDMI from the cable box to the tv and component audio to the receiver. I am trying to avoid buying a new receiver for as long as I can get away with it so any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. This seems like a ton of brain damage and I am sure there are folks out there that know this stuff much better than I do. Thanks in advance!!

Coaxial F type cable connecting the receiver to the tv in the antenna 1. Component video into color stream HD 1.
enmoco, thanks, decided against the sony crt once I saw the picture in a bright room due to glare off the shiny reflective screen. Page 67 of my manual shows "Using the video input source to view". Selecting 0 for ANT 1 gives me the snowy screen. Sorry if the is a silly question.

I had not run a channel search as I was not planning on running cable through the receiver but have now and still the same snow. Not sure how to try a direct feed to ant 1. Do not see that option anywhere. As far as the cables go, I have monster cables connecting the DVD and the cable box to the receiver. Previously I had everything (vcr, DVD and cable box) into the receiver and then the coax cable going from the receiver to my old 37" JVC. Cables to the tv are only the 2 I mentioned, just the coax from the receiver and the component video from the cable box to the tv.

The new 56HM195 COAX INPUTS ANT 1 & ANT 2 will only accept analog/digital TV broadcast signal feed, ... not Audio/Video converted RF signal feed - hence the white fuzzy picture.
I'm pretty sure you must do one of the following ...
1) by-pass the old AV Receiver and connect all the component outputs directly into your new 56HM195,
... or (maybe?) ...
2) use the old AV Receiver RCA OUTPUT Jacks (Component or RED/WHT/YEL RCA Outputs) to the 56HM195 RCA INPUT Jacks to see DVD & VCR picture!
I personally connect ALL my Components directly into my 56HM195 to get the best signal connections.

When I got my 56HM195 I immediately hooked it up to the SA8300HD STB via the supplied component cables. After programming the cable remote, everything worked great. I ordered an HDMI cable from MONOPRICE and installed it yesterday. I can't really see a difference in PQ but it did clean up the growing "birds nest" behind the TV. The problem I"m seeing though is that I can no longer control the volume with the cable remote. Every other function works though. Anyone else have this problem when switching from component to HDMI?
Does any one happen to know of a vendor that has the bulb in stock? Thinking I am going to do like others. Get a second one for when there are issues and have to wait for one to ship. Also going to be looking into an extended warranty (thinking tvathority, unless someone can recommend someone else). That way will be covered.
Looking over this thread again, it has become more disconcerting. I've seen some sites listed in the thread in regards to the bulb, but they seem to be out of stock.
new price replacement 95 & 195 series lamp (http://www.partstore.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductSKU=8346422&ProductType=PART&ModelID=610415) Appears to be instock.
nbdyspl 02-26-06, 05:28 PM I am glad that at least one person got the replacement lamp.I have spoken to supervisors many of them I have also been very polite.I was told at first 7 to 10 days now on Friday I as told another 10 to 15 days I wondering just like you who decides who get these things its starting to get me upset I have a very expensive stereo system.
I really cant beleive that toishiba is pulling this bull.I really hope they honor there warranty if they dont my hope lies with the dealer that I bought the tv from they did say if they get them in before I get one they would be happy to give me one.
jumpinjoe 02-26-06, 06:55 PM Well it finally happened to me. Surfing the net on my laptop with the TV on and BOOM! Wife thought I dropped my wine glass but I only wish it were that.
My bulb blew on my 72hm195. Have ~500 hours on it and the TV was purchased new in October/November of 2005 time frame.
Toshiba was sending me the latest firmware upgrade but I guess I have to wait until my buld arrives before I can test it.
What a bummer! Glad I had the heads up from the forum members that this might happen or I'd be really pissed right now. Still pissed but just slightly.
This TV is starting to get on my nerves!
agent99 02-26-06, 06:58 PM Has anyone purchased a lamp from the Parts Store? Good price but are they (Parts Store) reliable? I don't understand why third venders have lamps for sale but Toshiba has none. Probably providing bulbs to their assemby line and prior customers are screwed. I no longer recommend Toshiba to my friends.
Yup, this bulb thing is going to kill them. I was prepared to buy a 62HM195 tomorrow, but I'm seriously reconsidering. The main reason I was interested in Toshiba is that their units seemed far more reliable than JVC LCoS TVs. I no longer believe that. I'm thinking that maybe I should wait another year. The technology just isn't ready. Not even close, it appears.

I too was considering the 72"MX195 but this bulb thing is a killer. I mean who wants to be without the TV for 2 to 3 weeks. JVC has their problems but the lamp doesn't appear to be one of them. At least with the JVC you can still see the picture until its fixed.
Just an added thought. The technology will never be stable unless you can accept years old ones. I guess if you so concerned in that you should get the proven CRT RPTV.

I am certainly no defender of Toshiba and have expressed my dissatisfaction regarding the premature failure of the bulbs and the lack of an adequate supply. With that said...the issues they are having have nothing to do with the technology...bulb based projectors have been around many years...the issue is perhaps defective bulbs that if Toshiba was smart would address post haste..I have said a recall may be in order...so far nothing from them though...it seems they are now losing potential new customers due to this issue...hope they look at this and other forums...
new price replacement 95 & 195 series lamp (http://www.partstore.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductSKU=8346422&ProductType=PART&ModelID=610415) Appears to be instock.
Thanks enmoco. I went ahead and ordered one from Part Store. I called them to verify stock. They said they did have them in. I had them overnight it. Should be here Tuesday evening.
Will hold off on recommending Toshibas to friends at this time. Until the lamp issue is resolved, just can't recommend it, no matter what think of the picture. *sigh* and it is such a great picture. Just the more think about it, and the downtime/hassle of it all, the more upset get.

When I get CS on the phone tomorrow they will have 2 options.
1. Send me 2 bulbs via fed ex
2. Take back the TV, Symbio, DVD and Stand.
Anything short of this will awaken my demons from within
Not saying that I am going to but I have successfully litigated things like this and believe me, they would be foolish not to go with #1 and if they do not, then the actions which will be taken to make them take back the items listed in #2 will cost them a lot more than just taking back the items immediately.
I live for this stuff! Can you tell I am already losing my mind now that I have no HD TV?
griz_fan 02-27-06, 08:56 AM I had not run a channel search as I was not planning on running cable through the receiver but have now and still the same snow.
Maybe I'm not fully understanding your question, but I really can't see why you'd even want to do this. It seems like a completely backwards way to go, and designed to give you the worst possible sound and picture if you are indeed using COAX (black cable, right?) for your DVD and VCR.
Why wouldn't you do this:
motorola DCT6412 III - video via component direct to TV (or via HDMI for video signal to TV)
DVD player - video via component direct to TV (or via HDMI for video signal to TV)
VCR - S-Video, if avaialable, or composite for video direct to TV
For audio - use optical cable for the DCT6412 and your DVD player direct to your Onkyo reciever. For the VCR, standard red/white analog audio cables. Then, disable the TV's speakers, and you're set. Best possible picture through your TV, best possible sound through your home theater sound system.
the downside to this is that you will need to switch inputs on your TV and your Onkyo A/V receiver when ever you switch between DVD, cable, etc... But, there are dozens of universal remote controls that can automate this through macros (I have a OneForAll remote I got for sixteen bucks that handles these tasks just fine).
The system you're trying to pull off sounds like a ton of work and will cripple your TV. If that's the route you want to take, why have a nice TV?
BAMA Man 02-27-06, 09:58 AM Thanks for your kind words. :)
I have the exact same layout. I have windows on left wall and fireplace on the right. I have to place the TV in the corner. Added problem is the built-ins on the same wall so the TV sticks out somewhat. I will be redesigning and building the built in shelving unit to have a base for the TV.
I dont have one yet, but as far as your mention of the speakers causing vibration I agree. I'm even concerned about the sub being close to the TV ( I can just imagine the the lamp filament vibrating). Sends shivers down my spine.
BAMA Man 02-27-06, 10:01 AM Has anyone purchased a lamp from the Parts Store? Good price but are they (Parts Store) reliable? I don't understand why third venders have lamps for sale but Toshiba has none. Probably providing bulbs to their assemby line and prior customers are screwed. I no longer recommend Toshiba to my friends.
I ordered a lamp a few months back from them for my 52hm94. I ordered the lamp with 2nd day delivery. I called a few days later and was told it was on backorder. I asked to cancel the order they agreed and I received the lamp anyway? I called them they appologized and cleared it all up. I think they are pretty good just a little slow on the draw. You should just keep checking the order until you get a shipping tracking number. I'd order from them again.

Holy S%*t...thats so funny..I thought about the filament vibrating as well...but I rationalized that the TV has speakers that would vibrate the set somewhat so I dont think the sub will vibrate it any more than the internal speakers...I happen to have 4 subwoofers, two passive and two powered (i know sicko)...so my whole room shakes... :D

I posted previously about this but will add .02 here. When I first found out about Parts Store (a month or two ago) and their in-stock position I ordered a spare bulb right away. It arrived within a week and worked as the original had. I'm now using the replacement and have the original as a spare to get by when current bulb eventually expires while awaiting another replacement. I don't mind always keeping one extra around to prevent downtime on the TV. Of course, this is a bit more tolerable at the $189 price than it would be at the $400 price I'm hearing about for the 95/195 sets.
BirdyMan 02-27-06, 10:39 AM All, I bought a 62HM195 4 months ago, lamp blew a week ago. Yep, toshiba told me they were on back order. Stupid me went out and bought one for $359! The parts store had them for $251!!. Live and learn. Jeeze I hope Toshiba fixes this problem. I'm so disappointed in the engineering! I mean the lamp stories are horror stories. We're supposed to get 4k to 6k hours out of these lamps. I wish I could hear something definate that Toshiba is doing to fix the problem! Are the new bulbs supposed to last the 4,000 hours? Does anyone know of a 62xx195 or 56xx195 owner who has gotten 4k of hours?

Thanks. The problem arose from me not being able to immediately run new cable though the conduit. My tv is seperated from my components by 10' and a fireplace with conduit running in the wall behind it and only coax running through that so I was trying to use what I had. Yesterday I purchased a Denon AVR-3805 and I am running all new cable this week so I should have my problem whipped. Thank you all for the information. It was greatly appreciated!
waited18years 02-27-06, 12:33 PM I'm even concerned about the sub being close to the TV ( I can just imagine the the lamp filament vibrating). Sends shivers down my spine.I think that the projection lamp technology is a high intensity discharge mercury arc lamp which has no filament. From http://www.halcyon.net/lights/hid-faq.shtml :
High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting technology replaces the filament of the light bulb with a capsule of gas. The light is emitted from an arc discharge between two closely spaced electrodes hermetically sealed inside a small quartz glass tubular envelope capsule. To operate, they require ballasts, which supply proper voltage and control current. The amount of light produced is greater than a standard halogen bulb, while consuming less power, and more closely approximating the color temperature of natural daylight.
In all High Intensity Discharge lamps, light is produced by passing a current through a metal vapor. Free electrons colliding with an atom in the vapor momentarily knock an electron into a higher orbit of the atom. When the displaced electron falls back to its former level, a quantum of radiation is emitted. The wavelength of radiation depends on the energy zone of the disturbed electron and on the type of metal vapor used in the arc tube.
Although it produces 5% of its output when first ignited, the HID light requires a few seconds (usually 15-20) to come up to full output. Also, if power to the lamp is lost or turned off, the arc tube must cool to a given temperature before the arc can be re-struck and light produced. Halcyon HID lights only require a brief (15-30 second) cooling period before they can be re-lit.

Thanks for the info. Maybe it was pieces of electrodes I saw inside my exploded bulb..or not. In any case I was cringing to the vibration coming from the movie "Armageddon" last night. The thought of these fragile lamps vibrating kind dampens my enthusiasm for getting a sound system....well maybe not that much.
BK,
Your a sick freak. Maybe you can lend this sick freak a sub until I can convince the Honey to agree on a new surround system.
Good tip I found, common sense but maybe missed by those of you buying back ups.
"Quick Tip: If you purchase a spare lamp with your projector, run it in your projector for a few hours first, then store it somewhere cool and dark. Lamp warranties begin from the day of purchase, not from the day of use. If a lamp is faulty, it will usually fail within the first 4 to 10 hours of opperation. "

Unless it is one from Toshiba, then could fail after 300 hours or so  (j/k). Great tip though! Will have to make sure do that.
Hopefully the replacement lamps from Toshiba will last longer than the originals that are blowing.

You know I got that tip from a Lamp/Projector website. Now that I think about it if thats true then Tosh lamps arent necessarily defective just poor quality. I think I would prefer defective because I would expect that Tosh would be more likely to "fix" the problem if defective as that would cost less then upgrading the product.

Well my Firplace is in the corner. I tried to get my wife to allow me to take it out, but I lost. Instead I'm taking out the Gas insert ( ventless=useless ) and building a rack system in it's place. That way the spider web of cables can be routed to the back through a hole in the mantle top. Plus with all the extra space behind the components there should be plenty of ventilation and my floor space will increase to maybe allow another chair for seating.

I'm still getting used to my 56HM195. So far I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I thought I may have purchased a set that was too big for my viewing distance of 11 feet, but am finding that it's just right. The picture on this TV is amazing.
While watching the Olympics the last week I noticed something in the top left corner of the set. There seems to be a black curved line about 1 inch long. It's behind the screen and looks like a piece of string or dust. I contacted Sears and they said they would replace the set, no problem. I was wondering if it's worth getting a new set or if it can be corrected more easily than going through that hassle.
I've also noticed a bright spot in the middle of the screen when the TV is off. It looks like a reflection but it's not. It almost seems like light is entering somewhere and being reflected from inside the set. Has anyone ever seen this?

So, replacing the light engine solved the issue of the bright spot in the screen? If so, it sounds like I should take up Sears on their offer to replace the whole set as I may be experiencing multiple problems with the set.
mpalmieri1203 02-28-06, 09:20 AM Hi, I have a Toshiba 46hm84 and a buddy of mine has the new Samsung DLP. We both get the bright spot when the TV is off. I believe it is from internale reflections and is extremely normal. I don't see how the light engine could have an effect on this as it is off when the TV is off. I also rarely but occasionally see the spot when the TV is displaying a very dark....almost black scene. It has never bothered me and I barely notice it anymore. In fact the manual says this is to be expec ted from internal reflcections.

Would be a good idea. For a more detailed account, see my earliest posts (click on user name, then click on other posts, then last pages(actually earliest posts). Got my 56HM195 delivered in time for MNF.Prefect HD picture. Games over, wife puts on a movie she just got to check out how it looks to her. SCREAMS for me to come and see. Two mushroom shaped grey "blobs" in mid-right side of screen as credits begin to roll. Can only see them in total black. Called for tech.advise, and later in-home service call.Showed up today and explains its the light engine "leaking". After explaining the option of a replacement set or order new engine,I take the new engine option, hopefully at this later date(build 08/24/05),they may have a "later" model engine.Slim chance of a rebuilt as this model just came out and is 1080P. Also,he can come back next week when they recieve the new engine and put it in and I still watch it in the meantime.Bummed about it,but,I knew this was the "latest and greatest" tech from Toshiba. PQ really is stunning.I don't throw around "wows",but,it is way better than I had imagined.Oh,called Toshiba and they are sending the new firmware,no problem. Turn your set off. In a dark room, do you see the faint light artifact ? With the Quick start engaged, display will light up slightly. If light is "escaping" from LE,you will see it. It could be just something minor but YOU NEED A TECH TO COME OUT>Its in warranty.

Your description of the bright spot / reflection is exactly what I'm seeing. In fact, for the first time last night, I noticed it while watching a movie that had had some dark scenes. I guess it's a normal thing.
I still have the issue of the black string-like object in the top left corner of the screen. I guess I should replace the set.

Well we sit pretty far away, 12ft. I don't notice any difference in brightness standing or sitting so the viewing angle is fine. Besides if need be I could always put door stops underneath in the back and have it angled a few degrees, if it was necessary.

Wow, am I stupid. In spite of reading all the lamp and LE horror stories here, I went ahead and bought a 62HM195 this morning. Delivery whenever. I'll let you know how it works out.
Which is the patron saint of idiots? I think I need to pray. :)
Well I just called the Part Store to check on my order for a replacement lamp that should be arriving today. Amazingly the item which was instock on Saturday is now on backorder and will not be shipped until the 10th.
postie60 02-28-06, 02:53 PM I have a Toshiba 52HM85 and love it. Problem is, that I hooked up a FTA digital sat system to it, but the picture seems almost "pixelly". The sat is digital and I thought it would improve the picture from regular cable. I have used dthe RCA cables to connect. I tried the S-video cables but the picture was even worse. The picture seems almost "stretched". Anyone help me?

I would be real worried about placing the TV so close and especially above a heat source like that.

My story is very similar. My lamp blew on feb. 7th. I got a replacement from alltvlamps on the 9th. My warranty replacement from Toshiba arrived on the 24th, even though the CS rep said it would be 10 to 15 more business days when I called back to them on the 20th. The build date on the alltvlamp was Jan. 23. The build date on the Toshiba replacement was Feb. 12th. Both replacement lamps appear identical to the original. All the holes in the housing are the same size.
toadman50 02-28-06, 07:53 PM Well Thursday is my last day as a 52HM95 owner. I picked out the new TV today, it is a Samsung HLR5067W. Had to chuck out $200 extra bucks but well worth it. It doesn't seem that the Sammy's have the bulb issues like Toshiba's.
5 Months of mysery brought to an end. I about crapped a brick when Best Buy said that I could pick out a different TV .
I want to thank all of you guys for your help for the past 3 months, and hope that you never have to get a video processing board for your Toshiba because the little unknown secret is that Toshiba doesn't have them! :)
For all those who were wondering what happened-
-Bulb blown after 1200 hrs, 3 weeks to replace
-Never turns on right away, will blink green with solid red, and then will turn on after 8 seconds
-pixels show up on the screen all the time 2mmX2mm about 15 of them, was blamed on a bad video processing board that can't be replaced.
Toshiba RA number to take the piece of crap back, priceless! :D

I've had the same tv since November. The picture is amazing and I have not had one single problem whatsoever with the set. The lamp has about 700 hours and is going strong still.
I think the biggest worry you should have (if any) is the bulb life. Some people are having LE problems but I think it's a small percent. Consumer Reports also stated that Toshiba DLP's have the lowest repair rates (so far). Besides the way I look at it the TV is warranteed, Toshiba seems to stand by their products, the worst case senario is being without a TV untill it gets fixed.
Thanks, tony1010, nice to hear a story without horror.

magredc5 02-28-06, 11:52 PM I've had the same tv since November.
Just to add to Tony's update, I just checked my lamp hours and I'm at 1118. I bought the TV in mid-October and have had minimal issues related to CableCard and TVGOS when I originally got it, but thanks to this forum it works flawlessly now.
I did have an occasional issue where the higher numbered HD channels would suddenly start corrupting after about 20-25 days and would require a power reset to restore, but after trying a few things I performed a factory reset and so far it's been fine.
I hope I didn't just jinx my bulb. ;)
agent99 03-01-06, 12:36 AM Some good news. Yesterday was my two week anniversary without a lamp. I called Toshiba expecting to hear "10 to 15" days. After almost an hour on hold, the CS rep informed me a bulb was on the way and should arrive that day.
The lamp arrived as promised - overnight delivery! The new lamp was just like the one I removed and had the same part number. I am up and running - just hope it lasts.
kcsouth 03-01-06, 08:44 AM Wow, am I stupid. In spite of reading all the lamp and LE horror stories here, I went ahead and bought a 62HM195 this morning. Delivery whenever. I'll let you know how it works out.
Which is the patron saint of idiots? I think I need to pray. :)
Ditto
I find it fascinating that we all bought DLPs expecting the lamps to go out in 4000 hours (about 2 years). And now that we see some Tosh. lamps not lasting 6 months, we still got to have it.
My 52hm95 replaced a 13 year old Tosh 35" tube (great analog picture, never no problems) still a working.
What was I thinking?

I know what you mean. My previous TV was a 14 yo Panasonic CRT and I still have it's predecessor, a 29 yo Panasonic, which needed only one minor service early in it's life. Both are still going strong albeit with less use.

After hearing your good news, I thought I would check with Toshiba as well. Suppose to arrive today! They overnighted it yesterday. Good news :D
Still going to get the one from Parts Store, just so have a spare in case something were to happen again w/ the lamp. (will do the "testing" of it for 10-20 hours though before shelve it).
Other than the lamp, I have had no problems with the TV --- well other than my own mistake. This one really sucked. Right before the superbowl I went to clean the front screen. Guess I had a bit too much cleaner on the screen as it ran a bit down the front and behind the bezel. Apparently when I wiped the screen from the bottom up in the bottom-right hand side, it pulled some of the cleaner in between the two screens, so I had these nice big dark streaks in the screen for the duration of the game *sigh*. That sucked. They eventually went away, but still :S
Oh well. I do love this TV. It has an awesome picture. Still hoping that Toshiba will get the lamp issue resolved for all. They really should look into doing a recall of lamps.
jumpinjoe 03-01-06, 02:45 PM I have great news to report. Everything is up and running and better than back to normal. Did the new bulb install (bulb blew Sunday night) Toshiba sent me via overnight and also had the opportunity to install the new 1.3.1 and my CableCard issues are now resolved. I hope it continues to work the way its advertised.
Toshiba Customer Service was absolutely great to deal with and they are calling me today to make sure the new bulb and 1.3.1 work.

Replacement LCD / DLP Projector Bulbs Frequently Asked Questions
LCD / DLP Projector Bulbs and Lamps Frequently Asked Quesstions
Q. Why do LCD / DLP bulbs cost so much?
A. First, these LCD bulbs and LCD projectors utilize sophisticated optics technologies that allow images to be very precisely projected with a specific brightness, color mix, and clarity that is far superior to earlier-generation projection equipment. Second, the light bulb is assembled into a cage and is calibrated for consistent performance. Since the light bulb in a "cage" is a new generation of light bulb, it is accompanied by some "depreciated development costs", like most new products. The cost of this technology is relatively expensive. The good news, however, is that LCD / DLP bulbs are extremely efficient and have a long life compared to other types of projection bulbs.Q. What if my bulb does is not listed on your site?
A. Don't worry, we might be able to still get it, give us a call at 1-866-867-2852 or email us with your projector model.
Q. How much is shipping?
A. Ground shipping will be $7.95, no matter the size of your order and is typically 3-5 business days.
Give us a call at 1-866-TOP-BULB, and a customer service agent will help you find exactly what you're looking for.

It's a great deal better. And I did not even call CS- they called me :)
cicc85, if the line you are referring to is a solid line within about a half inch from the edge, its dust on the inside. I had it and saw it on 2 of the Toshiba TVs on display at the consumer elec show in January. Its very easy to clean. Remove the screws on the back of the top and side of the set, the front screen will tip forward. Reach inside with a lint free pad and wipe it away towards the edge. DO NOT use any glass cleaner or water just a lint free cloth.
Sears did this in 10mins. Now that I saw it done, anyone can do it. Its a problem from the Toshiba assembly and they admitted at CES that production had problems for a few months.
I recently purchased a HM195 and have a question. I subscribe to basic cable channels + HD. When I went thru the original guide setup and channels scan everything went fine. Now, and I don't know why, my HD channels are audio only. When I tune to a HD channel I will get a black screen with all the correct info as far as channel #, Call letters, resolution, etc., but no picture. Analog channels are fine. I do not know if I did something or what happened. Any help would be appreciated.

Whenever any similar issue happened to me, the only way to correct it was to pull the plug on the TV to force a power reboot. It should be fine after that.

Upgrading to firmware 1.3.1 resolved all of the above issues for me.

NR4P, Thanks for the tip! I'll give it a try. I was actually going to replace the set this weekend but things didn't work out with my schedule. I'd much rather try to fix it myself as it is such a hassle to bring it back. Plus, I don't want to be without this set for any period of time!
Amazing how quickly you get spoiled by HD at 56" when you've been watching standard cable on a 27" TV for 15 years!!!
DTullyZ06 03-02-06, 11:48 AM First time posting - though I've been reading this site for awhile now..
Well, I finally received my 72MX195 last night. We let it set for a few hours and then hooked everything up to it. Picture looks fantastic and bright compared to my 65" Diamond CRT.
But (I hate buts).. the right half of the screen looks like bar codes while the left is fine. I tried every input and tried DirecTV, Xbox 360, DVD, etc. and the whole time the right side had vertical bars. Funny thing is it's perfectly symmetric - left side is fine but right side are bars. Does this sound like something is very wrong??
I'm a bit gun shy now on getting another one (not a single problem in 5 years with the Mits). Was thinking of going now with the 73" Mits but I heard it doesn't have as good of a picture as the Toshiba has. Man.. if only the JVC Pro was not backordered :(
TIA.

I've ordered a 62HM195 from an online retailer. I have a couple of questions about shipping and delivery.
(1) Does the Toshiba packaging have any "tilt-o-meter" or "knock-o-meter" gizmos attached?
(2) When your TV was delivered, if it was necessary to schlep it up or down a stairway or through a tight, congested area, how many degrees (approximately of course) was the TV tilted without damage? With damage? (I live in a San Francisco flat, and it's REALLY gonna be tough to get the HM into my living room without a lot of creative geometry.)
Thanks!!

When mine was delivered it was tilted, upside down, on its end, and every other way you can think...they are packed VERY securely...and if you think they arent put in every position imaginable before it comes off the truck you are mistaken...as long as you can leave it in the box you should have no issues..if you need to take it out, thats where your trouble will come and you will need to be very careful...
It is possible that if tilted A LOT the boxed TV might get in the front door. More likely, it will have to be unpacked (to make it smaller) and still tilted a lot. The front door is the main problem. Once inside, there's a straight flight of stairs and a narrowish corridor and door to the living room with an alternate back-and-forth route through the kitchen that is pretty much a straight shot.
I will not attempt an ASCII art map to demonstrate these problems. :)
But there are no tilt-o-meters?
Thanks!

rfr, If you would like I could measure the box when I get home this afternoon if that would help. The set is packed well and the box has an upper part that slides over the lower part. The two bands are all that hold these together, so I would leave the plastic bands until you are ready to unpack the set. There is a shock indicator on the outside of the box that should be checked before you sign. My delivery guy laughed about the indicator and said that some guys will tear them off if they indicate shock.
Thanks very much, but when I think about it I really have no choice. I can either unpack it outside or not. I'll decide about that, with the help of the deliverers when the time comes. I figure as long as they're carrying it and I haven't signed yet, any damage is their insurance company's problem. That's why I'll be paying them to carry it.

That's exactly what I assumed and what prompted my question about what sort of indicators are on the package. If I do not find that indicator I will refuse the delivery immediately.
Thanks!

I guess yours got the "no shock meter, no shock!" treatment from the deliverer. :)
I'm going to verify with Toshiba about what they put on the box. And ask the retailer if I can expect it on my TV and if not, why not.

Let me clarify that I had two of these delivered from Buydig and both had the shock indicator on the side of the box close to the top. You may want to call who you ordered from and ask if they put one on. The sheet I signed did have the indicator question to check off. If you see a patch missing on the first layer cardboard like it was removed, you might want to refuse it. The indicator is round and about 6" diameter.
About lamps (yes, again) I thought I would add that I called CS about some minor issues and mentioned the lamps on the 1080P sets. Nothing new except they did mention that if someone has an issue that they may start extending the lamp warranty. This was just mentioned as a possibility. Hopefully with enough pressure they will do this.
I'm asking Toshiba CS now if they attach anything. When I hear from them one way or the other I'll know what to ask the retailer (Digital1234.com -- cheaper than BD).
Thanks again!

I would think so too...
they probably don't attatch the tamper deal until they take it from the warehouse/store...
I'll let you know. I just found out (pestering) that, in spite of not receiving the promised email, my TV shipped yesterday, the day after I ordered it, and is in transit with an ETA of about a week. Freight company's rather nice website confirms all this. Digital1234.com website is kind of goofy and buggy, but their email CS is rapid, friendly and informative. Happy SO FAR. :)

I usually know to try this with computers. Thanks for the tip.
Good day,
I have a 62HM84 for around 10 months now. Tonight I noticed there seems to be a static artifact on the left side of the screen. It felt like a smudge, and is especially apparent with an all white screen. I know it's not possible for the DLP to burn in, so I don't know what this is. I've tried to take some pictures, but they didn't come up too well, although you should still be able to see the smudge.
Yes, I did clean the screen first, my kid is not that tall yet. :)
Can someone shed some lights on this? Really appreciate any help!
We've had our 56HM195 for about a month. When we turn it on each time, all we get is a bluish screen with a reddish-pink "wavy" pattern (kinda looks like it could be distorted words) scrolling horizontally across the screen very quickly. Anyone know what could be causing this and if there's a way to fix it? It seems that it may be changing our settings each time as we have to go in and change the tint.
I should add that the satellite is on Colour Stream 1. When we experience the wavy pattern after turning on the TV, if we scroll through the inputs back to Colour Stream 1 the picture is fine.

Maybe a piece of Dust inside the monitor?
Maybe a piece of Dust inside the monitor?
No, because when I turned off the TV, then it's not there. I had a 13 year old RPTV that had severe burn in issue and this feels just like that, but I know that's impossible, so I don't know what to think...
I guess this is unique to my TV set then, interesting...

According to TCS, they do not affix any tilt or shock detection devices to their TV shipping containers.
So the ones that have been spotted are from retailers or shipping companies.
Z-Daddy 03-03-06, 06:02 PM I purchased a 56MX195 a little over 3 months ago. The last few days the picture quality hasn't been as good. Then when I was watching Lost on Wednesday night the screen was so dark I had to turn the brightness all the way up just so we could see the scenes at night. Yesterday the screen went dark with a strange noise. Toshiba has a bulb on the way to me (delivery scheduled for Tuesday next week). I look at this forum alot and have been reading about the bulb failures. I just wanted to post to let others know the bulb failure is happening more than Toshiba is admitting to.

ZDADDY did you have the bulb set to low or high bright? Fast restart or normal? Thanks
Steveo1717 03-03-06, 09:44 PM Fellas,
Normally I hate people who come onto a forum and whine to get answers, but after FIVE service calls here for my new tv, nothing has been remedied.
My problem is this:
During viewing, emanating from the bottom left and bottom right corners of my Toshiba 56Hm195 are shadows travelling diagonally up towards the center of the screen. The type of input doesnt matter, it shows up on both component (hd cable box) and hdmi (dvd player). When there are darker colours on screen, they are almost unnoticeable. But during bright light scenes or uniform colours (like a MPAA rating screen) they are extremely noticeable. The service guys were here today to replace my entire light engine and that only succeeded in moving the worse of the two shadows from the right to left hand side. Previously they'd tried to fix some filtering problem and also trimming away some felt piece near the bulb.
I havent got a camera on hand at the moment, but picture if you held a flashlight against a wall, and shone it up the wall. I get that in the bottom corners of my screen, only it's a shadow instead of light.
Basically they're out of ideas and so am I. The strange thing is that I havent heard anyone else voice this problem. Any help or advice on what this might be would be EXTREMELY appreciated.
Z-Daddy 03-03-06, 10:17 PM ZDADDY did you have the bulb set to low or high bright? Fast restart or normal? Thanks
I kept the bulb on low hoping to extend bulb life.........normal restart. I turned the bulb on high maybe ten times just to check it out. One thing I didnt mention in my first post is the T.V. made a very strange noise on start up about 3 days before the bulb blew. It sounded like the cooling fan that comes on when you turn it on was turning three times the speed (very loud) it went away after about 1 minute. It only happened 1 time. Just more info for anyone who wants to know.

Steveo,
I hate to sound to basic but it could be dust or plastic shaving somewhere near the screen mirror or the mirrors on the LE or the Lamp. Sounds like something is blocking the light. It could be very small in actual size.
Good luck
DJDiggler 03-03-06, 10:58 PM Hello, just like to add my experience with my 52HMX85 (Canadian). I purchased the TV on Dec 27 2005, TV was manufactured in Nov 2005. Bulb blew on Feb 25.... not even 2 months of use & only 426 hours on bulb. I was lucky in that a service center here in edmonton had bulbs in stock, however, it looked the same as the old one.... has toshiba revised the bulbs at all? I'm worried I got old stock though the bulb box said it was delivered Feb 14.
The service tech also updated my firmware to version 19. It seemed like nobody knew about this update at all, (even many toshiba service centers & all reps I talked to), so any any canadians make sure you get it!

I have the same thing...its not VERY noticable, If I ask my wife or my kid if they see it they wont unless I point it out to them...To me it looks like the lines follow the contour of the back of the cabinet...I might call Tosh about it before my warranty is up... :) besides..I'm worried more about a potential bulb problem..see below...
bkazepis 03-04-06, 08:17 AM Last night when first turing on the TV I saw a picture for a few seconds...then...black screen..no pop noise just black screen...the blue light was on and the yellow was blinking..maybe for 4 or 5 blinks..then the TV reset itself it seemed and turned on with no other issues...turned on this morning normally...anyone ever have this and more importantly..anyone ever have this preceeding a particular part failure ie. light engine etc....
Wondering... :(
zdaddy thanks. Your info helps on the bulb and first with normal restart.
I started a survey in another forum
http://www.highdefforum.com/showthread.php?t=19851&page=1&pp=10
and your data here combined with that shows
From the 8 responses total, 7 out of 8 had bulb on Low Power (one had on Low Power most of the time). All but you had quick restart. One on high power lost the bulb.
7/8 on Low power = 87%. Now all but one (zdaddy) had quick restart on (87%).
I wonder what other people are seeing with high power on bulb, or normal restart?
Could low power on bulb be keeping the lamps running below normal design parameters? Or the quick restart feature where the bulb runs at 50% for 4 minutes when shut down to cool be contributing?
Would appreciate hearing from more folks particularly with NO failures and their settings. Perhaps putting in the other thread above to keep it in one place.

Sorry, but get ready for the bulb to blow. Should be within the next week. The same thing happened to me before my bulb blew.
Steveo1717 03-04-06, 07:13 PM bkazepis,
Let me know if the technicians figure anything out and improve things for you, if you do get them over to take a look at this shadow business...I'd appreciate any help you can give
bkazepis 03-04-06, 10:03 PM Sorry, but get ready for the bulb to blow. Should be within the next week. The same thing happened to me before my bulb blew.
So the same thing happened to you? How many times did it happen?
bruin95 03-04-06, 11:42 PM So the same thing happened to you? How many times did it happen?
The first time it happened was about a week before the bulb finally went. Several times during that week, when I went to turn on the TV, it reset itself before it finally came on. I'd say it happened 3-4 times before it stopped working altogether. If it doesn't happen again over the next couple of days, you may be alright. If it does, do yourself a favor and call Toshiba right away. Good luck.
NODLP4ME 03-05-06, 12:51 PM I purchased my 62HM95 on Aug. 4th this year. :)
Last Friday pop goes the lamp. (about 1800 Hours)
“Yes that’s a lot of hours for less than 4 months”
But my last TV a pioneer 60” rear projection went for 12 years
With the same amount of use before the first service call.
I can’t even imagine this $3000 TV after 12 years.
 Lets see 3 lamps a year times $329.00 times 12 years.
$11,844.00 over twelve years. Ouch Why did I do this to myself.
And that’s only for the lamps…. I’m sure there will be other service calls.
I should have visited this forum before I bought into DLP
I would have bought another CRT type rear projection TV in HD.
Do I smell a class action suit on DLP technology!
Oh and that’s the good news the bad news is that it will take 3 weeks to get a replacement lamp from Toshiba.
That’s 336 hours I won’t be using the TV Oh wait that would be 336 hours 3 times a year times 12 years = 12,096 hours over 12 years.. But wait / that by 1800 hours that’s 6.72 lamps I will not need over the 12 year period. So lets see.
329*6.72=$2210.88 I better stop I’m just pissing myself off.
Same Crap Different Day
Exactly the same as last time only this time it’s wasn’t a holiday.
The replacement lamp only lasted 3 months.
Last night I noticed the picture getting darker tried to turn up the brightness and that made very little difference so I turned the lamp to high bright mode this morning turned on the TV after about 4 hours Poof pop lamp blows up. I’m still not totally convinced it’s all a lamp problem seems to me it could be a problem with the voltage regulators in these sets. I can’t call till Monday I wonder how bad the back orders are this time.
Last time it took all most 4 weeks to get a lamp.
I love this TV but I hate this Crap!
thorny64 03-05-06, 06:03 PM I bought the 62" Cinema Series in August, and thanfully a 5 year extended warranty. Well, a little over a week ago we had vertical white stripes/bands (thin) going through every couple inches or so. It was picked up a week ago and not sure how long it will take to get fixed. Man - got used to the TV and we don't know what to do without it now. I have *NEVER* had problems with my 3 other Toshiba Televisions. So it is alarming to have problems with this one. I think they are replacing the DLP engine (not sure). But 5-year warranty or not, I will sell this thing if it is going to die on me every few months.
Also, I have been away from the forum for a while. Is there any way to get the TV to come on without going into the TV guide automatically? Are there software updates I should have them do to it? Should they also replace the bulb and do a professional recalibration?
Thanks
soonerczech 03-05-06, 06:28 PM My bulb blew yesterday, purchased the set on Dec 18. Probably around 1500 hrs of actual running on it. Have an APC power conditioner hooked up and all, saw that the screen was getting dim, tried the high lamp mode and all that crap. Went and took a shower and came back and no picture, just flashing lights. Called Tosh and was told that a lamp was going to be O/N to a repair center and they would call me to let me know. Really, this is utterly ridiculous for a bulb.
bruin95 03-05-06, 06:32 PM Also, I have been away from the forum for a while. Is there any way to get the TV to come on without going into the TV guide automatically?
While the TV guide is on the screen, highlight setup, scroll down to general defaults, press enter. On the left side of the screen you will see the general defaults box. Scroll down to auto guide and select off. Scroll to "done" and hit enter. The TV guide will now NOT start until you hit the TV guide button on the remote.
Are there software updates I should have them do to it?
There is an update to fix some issues with the TV guide and cable cards. If you do not use a cable card there is no need to get the update. If you do, call Toshiba and they will send you the update on an SD memory card which you would install yourself. It's pretty simple.
Should they also replace the bulb and do a professional recalibration?
They will not replace the bulb if there's nothing wrong with it. Either it works, or it doesn't. Also, I would recommend a professional calibration, if you can afford it.
Hello, I recently purchased a toshiba 52hmx95 dlp tv. I have a few concerns and am not sure what roads to take to fix them. I have searched the forum and didn't find much help, so I apologize if these questions have been asked. I currently have the tv hooked up with regular cable (digital cable with hd two weeks away). The picture does not look that good with regular cable (which i think should be expected). However, when I put a dvd in and watch it, the picture is much better, but still not where I think it should be. Now, I am only connecting my dvd player to the tv via an s-video cable. Could this be my problem? Do I need to connect via a hdmi cable? I am sure the cable picture quality will change with the digital cable and hd channels, but I dont know what to do about the dvd player? I wonder if I am sitting too close to the tv (approx 10 1/2 feet)? Is my screen too big for my viewing space? Should I have gotten the 46" tv instead? I appreciate any information anyone can give me. I am not very familiar with hdtv so I have tinkered with the tv's setting only a little bit. Thanks again.

Most certainly dump the S-video connection and use component or HDMI..it will make a difference for the better. As for viewing distance, 10' for a 52" screen should be ok, depending on who answers ;)
Composite video and S-video connections will not do this set justice.
BAMA Man 03-06-06, 08:44 AM So the same thing happened to you? How many times did it happen?
BK,
I havent had that problem but it sounds like a lamp problem trying to raise its ugly head. I personaly would contact tosh for a new lamp now. I would also take a chance and leave the TV on full time. In my op if its going to blow anyway the tv setting and resetting would only speed it up. :(
waited18years 03-06-06, 11:02 AM During viewing, emanating from the bottom left and bottom right corners of my Toshiba 56Hm195 are shadows travelling diagonally up towards the center of the screen.
I get that in the bottom corners of my screen, only it's a shadow instead of light.I wonder if this sort of thing could be caused by a problem with the alignment of the projection lamp and the rest of the optical system. If there was something wrong with the lamp itself or if the lamp enclosure is misaligned then the beam from the parabolic reflector in the lamp enclosure might not uniformly illuminate the DMD.

Just thought I would weigh in on the bulb issue topic. I've got a 52HM84, bought in December of 2004 still going on its first bulb with about 2,000 hours on it. My settings are (and have always been) low power and quick restart. TV is plugged into a Monster Power bar along with sat receiver and dvd player.
I've got my fingers crossed that I'll be the lucky one who makes it to 6,000 - 8,000 hours.

1. Wait till you get HD to make any decisions.
2. I believe your set has an internal HD tuner? Then hook up a real antenna, rescan (you must rescan) your channels and see if you get any HD shows during prime time. You may be pleasantly surprised. The will appear as channels 2-1. 5-1 22-1 etc. But depends where you live. Rabbit ears may even work for one or two stations.
3. Be sure your DVD player is a Progressive player, if not you won't have best picture. If its not labelled progressive or has a progressive button, its interlaced only.
4. DONT take standard tv shows which are 4:3 and stretch them to wide screen, that will distort them. Leave them in natural.
Hey, thanks for everyone's suggestions about my tv. On a similar note, my current dvd player is progressive and can connect to the tv with component cables. How much better is the picture quality with a dvd player that can connect to the tv via hdmi cables? thanks again.

cubsh8r 03-07-06, 03:35 AM Forgive me for not reading through all the posts to see if this answer exists..but I have a new 56mx195 on the way and I'm obviously concerned w/the whole lamp issue.
Are the more recent units having the same issues, or has Toshiba made attempts to resolve?
I'm especially concerned b/c I won the TV through a Super Bowl party w/relatives out of state, so I can't buy an extended warranty locally :(
Also, I'm planning on using HDMI w/my DirecTV HD-Tivo...any feedback on whether HDMI or Component is recommended here?
Thanks

Although there has been some rumors that Toshiba was using a new supplier or had improved the lamps in some way, I don't think there has been any solid evidence in that regard. Many have indicated that the lamp housing has been modified a bit to provide better cooling, but nothing definitive beyond that.
There were also some rumors that there was a "bad batch" of lamps used in the fall of 2005. Again - no real evidence, but there does seem to be quite a few people with early lamp failures on sets made during that time period.
The bottom line is that the lamp is an expensive consumable item with the Toshiba (and all other brands of lamp based RPTV's). Once the warantee is up, you'll be replacing the lamp on intervals anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand hours. It's really a "crap shoot" as to whether you get a good one or a bad one.
You should be able to buy an extended warantee if you have the original purchase documents, etc. Others can probably give you a better idea as to what vendors are good/bad. Otherwise, if you have to start buying the lamps on your own - use a credit card that doubles the factory warantee. The replacements have a 6 month factory warantee, so you shouldn't have to shell out the $$ more than once a year of you do it that way.
indil377 03-07-06, 10:33 AM I bought a 46HM95 September of 2005. The bulb went out the morning of Super Sunday when my beloved Steelers were to play. Needless to say, I was upset as well as in disbelief. The bulb is warrantied for the first year after purchase date so I got a new bulb under warranty. The next time, it comes out of my pocket. It took about a week to get but that has been the norm on bulbs. One thing I don't like is there isn't any lamp timer on my set. I can't really keep track of how many hours I am getting out of a bulb. I keep my unit on low brightness. I found a place that has good prices on bulbs. I had a price on earlier but read the rules and took it off. Sorry about that.

but you might just wait for the HD DVD players... the toshiba unit will play hd dvds, and also upconvert regular DVDs... the only issue is the price difference... about $350... :(

piturra 03-07-06, 01:09 PM .... toshiba 52hmx95 dlp tv. .... I currently have the tv hooked up with regular cable (digital cable with hd two weeks away). The picture does not look that good with regular cable (which i think should be expected).
FYI: I don't have a Cable Box - just Comcast 'LIMITED" Basic Cable via COAX Cable (LOCATION: Mountain View, CA - Comcast)
.... So, after 24 hours, ... I manually scanned the Cable channels from the Setup Menu
............. I located over 200+ channels and used the Add/Delete option and for the next couple hours+
............. I viewed every Analog & Digital channels and discovered Cable TV Digital / Digital HD channels!
.... Success!!! :) Found all my usual OTA Channels in Digital & in High Definition (except ABC HD - Channel 7-1)!!!
............. I use the Zenite Indoor HDTV antenna w/Radio Shack 10 dB Amp to pull-in ABC HD - approx. 31.8 miles away!!! Works GREAT!!! :D
.... However, when I put a dvd in and watch it, the picture is much better, but still not where I think it should be. Now, I am only connecting my dvd player to the tv via an s-video cable. Could this be my problem?
Yes! The DVD Quality goes up using Component Cables after Calibrating the Video!
.... Do I need to connect via a hdmi cable? I am sure the cable picture quality will change with the digital cable and hd channels, but I dont know what to do about the dvd player?
YEP!!! If you have that option, ... that should provide the BEST Quality after Calibrating the Video!
.... I wonder if I am sitting too close to the tv (approx 10 1/2 feet)? Is my screen too big for my viewing space? Should I have gotten the 46" tv instead? I appreciate any information anyone can give me.
You're not too close! The reason why you usually don't want to be too close to your RPTV big screen TV's is because you can see the raster or pixel lines!
I sit approx. 9' away from my 56" 56HM195 1080p HDTV (20' x 30' HT/family room) and I don't see the raster or pixel lines! I've stood around 1' away, stared @ some screens and still didn't see any raster or pixel lines! Cool!!! Anyway, other 3rd party HDTV reviewers noted the same thing in their notes about the Toshiba DLP HDTV's!
.... I am not very familiar with hdtv so I have tinkered with the tv's setting only a little bit. Thanks again.

To get the BEST PERFORMANCE out of your HDTV, YOU MUST CALIBRATED YOUR VIDEO!!!
The best part is you can do it yourself using Digital Video Essentials w/16x9 enhanced test screens - highly recommend this for any Digital HDTV!!!

It's impossible to ...
1) Adjust the "Brightness & Contrast" without the "Pluge" Test Screen
From VideoEssentials Glossary webpage**: (http://www.videoessentials.com/glossary.php)
**PLUGE (Picture Line Up Generation Equipment): This is a name of a test pattern that assists in properly setting picture black level. PLUGE can be part of many test patterns. The phrase and origination of the test signal are both credited to the BBC.
2) Adjust the "Color & Tint" without the NTSC Color Test Screens & BLUE Color Filter
**NTSC (National Television System Committee)
Blue Only The video adjustment instructions of both VE and DVE illustrate the need to look at just one of the three color channels to set the color controls. Professional monitors usually include a capability of shutting off individual color channels so that you can easily look at just one of them at a time. Since color adjustments are supposed to be made looking at the blue channel professional monitors have a blue only selection that shuts the red and green off.
In the consumer world that feature isn't common so JKP has provided a filter that blocks the majority of the red and green information, allowing you to see just the blue channel. This works for the majority of consumer sets.
You can get Digital Video Essentials for $16.48 w/FREE SH @ DeepDiscountDVD! (http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=VMG010712)
So, have fun Calibrating your HDTV!

collin23 03-08-06, 01:17 AM Hello,
I am new to the forum and bought a 72HM195 45 days ago. I have been reading about the lamp problems and hoped that it would not happen to me.
Today while watching 24 the lamp blew. I had to use my wide screen computer monitor to finish watching it. After that I called BB and they sent somebody over
with a new lamp 30 minutes later!!! I did have the 4 year extended protection for the TV. I was getting ready to ask them for a loaner demo TV(small LCD flat panel) but it turned out that I did not need to. Has anyone else ever got this kind of service? Also the lamp he removed was completely shattered(inside its case). Is this the usual way they burn out?
Thank-you
Collin

Any advice when I call Toshiba? Will they come out or just send the lamp, I've read both!. I didnt get an extended warranty.
Also, I have a cablecard, but have been setting up, configuring and using my MCE HTPC, straight cable and OTA mostly lately because the cablecard was never working properly. And geting ready to return my DVR and use the HTPC and Cablecard.
But I cant remember exactly what wasnt working right with the cablecard. (Beeen a while)
Could someone tell "What problems I was having" So I can tell Toshiba and get the firmware update with m new lamp.
Since I cant install the cablecard and run it thru it's paces with the lamp out.
Thanks for any help!
Jeff
indil377 03-08-06, 11:54 AM As far as the bulb goes, they will send you a new bulb. Then you will have to send yor bulb back. You will need the information on your TV such as SN#, Model # etc. Get all that before you call them. As far as the firmware upgrade, you'll have to ask them about it when you have them on the phone. Be prepared to wait on the phone for 10 minutes or so before you talk to someone.

wordgasm 03-08-06, 12:54 PM Well I've joined the group, My lamp blew on my 56HM95 last night!

FYI, called toshiba today, ordered lamp, he was very nice.
Said the lamps are backordered again, and that they are quoting 10-15 days, "But they are expecting a shipment any moment/day and it should just be a couple days with 2 day fedex.
"He said my lamp "PROBABLY GOT CRACKED IN SHIPPING, THE FILAMENT PROBABLY CRACKED, and It just failed early.
Then he said the replacement lamp is different, BETER, newer than the original, "AND YOUR NEW LAMP SHOULD LAST 3 to 4 YEARS!
Just to let you all know!
Jeff
I'm expecting delivery of my 62HM195 in the next couple of days. So I wish you had asked him if the newer, better lamps are in current production models -- and when the shift to the new lamps occurred. (My experience with corporate BS says there are no newer, better lamps, but we live in hope.)
ragtop262 03-08-06, 01:21 PM "He said my lamp "PROBABLY GOT CRACKED IN SHIPPING, THE FILAMENT PROBABLY CRACKED, and It just failed early.
FYI - the lamp has no "filament". It works with an electric arc between two electrodes.
Then he said the replacement lamp is different, BETER, newer than the original, "AND YOUR NEW LAMP SHOULD LAST 3 to 4 YEARS!
Did he also try to sell you some swampland?? Or maybe a bridge in New York??
I must say, the Toshiba CSR's are generally very nice. But for the most part, they really don't have a clue with regard to the technical aspects of your problem. They mostly know what their "script" tells them - and they might throw in a few extra things to make you feel better. (even if its not necessarily true)

Yeap I bought a ticket on the first public space flight for $49.95 while resolving my lamp issues, but hey at least he tried to make me feel better about my Toshiba!
I'm just happy my next lamp will last 3 to 4 year ! :D

When I was a child in the 50s, I got a seat on the first commercial moon rocket. I forget what I had to buy -- maybe a SciFi book club. I'm still waiting. Wonder how many Toshiba lamps I'll go through before my moon trip!
I know, I've read a lot about it - good or bad. I've bough a new 62HMX95 and getting an extended warranty for about $200 for 5 years. I've my first year warranty from Toshiba and getting the second year from VISA card. Do you guys think, it's still worth to go for extra three years for extra $200 ? Looking at the technology going up, the TV won't be much worth $1000 in next 4 years and the warranty does not cover the bulb anyway. What you think can really break and be very expensive to replace ?

Yeap, thinking it's the same lamps, when I get this new one, I'm thinking I might just run the new lamp in bright mode and SEE IF I CAN MAKE IT FAIL BEFORE THE REPLACEMENT LAMP WARRANTY IS UP!

I dont know if you are kidding or not...but If you arent I agree :) IIRC the majority of the failed bulbs were in low power mode with quick start anyway....some have gone the extra mile to put the TV on a UPS/Power Conditioner and still have had the bulb fail....
mmmm9999 03-08-06, 05:47 PM I have a 46HM95. The manual says don't hook a PC to the TV, but has anyone been successful doing this via a regular old yellow composite connection without doing damage? Are there recommendations on resolution sizes that look good and won't hurt the 46HM95?
I'm new to the thread and wasn't very successful with search, so my apologies if this has been covered before.

I'm not kidding about this!
I think it looks better in Bright Mode. Buy a $3K TV, and not use it how you like it and it is supposed to function because of a manf defect!
I think Not!

I bought my 56HM195 from buydig and got a great deal paid 2600 for the TV and stand. I was running mine in high mode and it lasted exactly 2 weeks. 160 hours before it exploded. I did receive the new lamp in 5 days though. The day it exploded i started looking on the internet and that is when i discovered this forum and to what extent others were having the same problem and with DLP's in general. If i had know I would have just kept my Sony CRT rear projection television that i sold 3 days after i bought the Toshiba. Don't get me wrong I love the Tv and I truly hope the new bulb lasts longer but at this rate I'm just gonna weight until the 50 inch plasmas come down in price and then I'm going to get one of those. Their bulbs burn out but only cost 60 dollars to replace.

The VISA warranty is suppose to provide the same coverage the mfg warranty does. Since the mfg warranty covers the bulb, why wouldn't the VISA warranty cover it also?
I believe you have bulb coverage for 5 years.
Add me to the list as well....
46HM95 lamp just blew - only 3 month old set
I never even watched tv more than 3-4 hours a day, thats just sad...
Are the lamps still backordered?

Same here. 3 months old and less than 500 hours on it. The Toshiba CS acted all shocked when told about it.
Interesting thing when trying to get a new lamp. Called Best Buy and they gave me a number to a Toshiba Authorized Service Center and said I had to call them to get a new lamp. Trying calling Toshiba directly and they told me that they don't send lamps out and that I had to call a Toshiba Authorized Service Center and order one through them. Called the local Toshiba Service Center and they don't have any lamps. They said they'll order one and get back to me. This was all on Monday and haven't heard anything back. They said to call them if they haven't called me by Friday.
Has other people had similar experiences or am I being pushed around?

Tosh and some others are actually developing a light source for TV's that is LED and will have a supposed life expactency of about 20k hours. Using TOSH's lamp hour rating that probably really means about 6-7k hours... at least thats an improvement. Also the LED is suppose to give a brighter pic, with better color and contrast. Tosh also has developed a - for a lack of a better term - multi gun CRT type panel TV. It will be high cost at first but is suppose to drop in price.
With Sony's new LCOS type 90% fill technology, that tells me DLP's will be outdated in the next 5 years...if not already so.
So what are the chances that they can incorporate the new bulb technology into the exhisting DLP tv's. I'm not really holding my breath on that. Chances are their gonna require you to upgrade your television in order to get a more reliable solution. I'd be willing to bet they new all about these bulb issues when they released the tv's but decided to release them anyways at the customers expense. I don't trust them any further then i could throw them and it blows my mind that they can get away with such poor quality.

thanks for the response. Yes, it's true my bulb warranty will be coverd with VISA as well but only for an extra year. My question has been, is it worth to buy an extended warranty from the dealer for another 3 years for $200. (it won't cover bulb)

My question has been, is it worth to buy an extended warranty from the dealer for another 3 years for $200. (it won't cover bulb)I don't think so.Check, but I believe ALL and certainly MOST extended warrantys start on the date of purchase. Thus your 3 year warranty is really a 1 year warranty, because,Toshiba covered 1st year, Visa covers ONLY the second tear.Same math on a 4 or 5 year warranty.
Wratched 03-10-06, 06:31 PM Hey all,
Just received a replacement for a Toshiba 52HMX85 (Canada). The first 2 units had a crack in the display, and although the retailer replaced them immediately, I now have a unit that has significant pincushion effect at the bottom of the display. If this can be corrected via the service menu, then I am all for keeping the TV - at least it's not cracked. However, since this is the third model I have received the retailer suggested I try a different brand (looking at Hitachi LCD Proj).
Does anyone know the details of the service menu and if the pincushioning can be corrected?
Thanks.
So the freight company screwed up and won't deliver my 62HM195 until Monday. But this had a silver lining, because now my stand will arrive first! But not so fast, buster! DHL tells me after two days of lying and dicking around that the stand was destroyed in transit and is undeliverable. So I will need an impromptu stand on Monday. (That's assuming the freight guys don't destroy the TV as well.)
The TV is just a couple inches less than 60 inches wide, I believe. I have four wooden cubes (one side open) that are 15 inches on a side. So all four next to each other would form a complete base for the TV (assuming that I can get away with an inch of front and back overhang). I have scanned the online manual I downloaded a while ago, and there's nothing I can find about physical setup (except a warning not to use any carts or stands except Toshibas expressly made for your TV and blah blah).
I was wondering if I could get away with using three cubes. So two would be outboard and one in the middle with about 7-8 inches of space between them. Is there anything about the base of the 62HM195 that would make this plan impossible? Ill advised? (I want to use the fourth cube to hold up my cable box, receiver/amp and dvd player for the time being.)
Any advice from people who actually know the details of the base of the 62HM195 very much appreciated!

Mine went down Super Sunday. I called Toshiba and they sent me a replacement bulb. It took about 7 days to get to me. Almost all Toshiba bulbs are on back order. My bulb supplier told me 3/11/06 was when the next shipment out is expected. Several people wanted backups and I can't ship them out till after my supplier gets them and then ships them to me.

Of course the replacement bulb is newer than the old one. As far as better? Who knows? The reality is that these bulbs cost a good amount of cash. Toshiba should have been more accurate in their bulb evaluations. I find it hard to believe that they didin't have any problems when testing these units out. Surely it didn't all of a sudden start failing. Lot of times they don't put products through rigorous testing. The let the customer be the test bed. Sony did it with the VPL-PX20 and 30 LCD projectors. They had all kinds of problems. Cooling system not good enough and firmware problems causing RS232 control problems to name a few.
Many companies do this. This isn't the first time and certainly not the last.
