New guy here.

I am looking to buy the 62HM195. I found it for $2534 delivered from buydig. Any regrets in getting this TV. I see some problems others have been having. Should I also get an exteneded warranty?
I bought the same TV from the same place about 6 weeks ago. No regrets so far and the picture is great. The only issue has been the life expectancy of the lamp. Chances are that a TV ordered now would have the newer lamp. Toshiba has extended the warranty on the lamps to two years on models that have the original lamp before a certain date basically admitting that the life for the early lamps is short. Also the price has dropped for a replacement lamp and Toshiba thinks the newest lamps will last. I think the TV is a great deal, but if an extended warranty is of value is questionable if Toshiba is going to be supporting the lamp issue. It seems like extended warranties can be had for a nice price, so it would be a good option.

Anyone from canada used the calibration dvd known as the Ultimate Dvd guide to home theatre? Only thing I could find in my region. If so, what did you think of it?

Canada eh? I'd recommend the highly regarded Digital Video Essentials DVD for $29.65 w/FREE SH from the Canadian version of DeepDiscountDVD website! (http://www.deepdiscountdvd.ca/dvd.cfm?itemID=VMG010712)

Traveler62, did you also look at the Samsung HL-R6168 before deciding to buy the Toshiba? I like the Toshiba because of the split screen option , although it does not have the VGA port.

Finally got my HDMI cable ---->
I hooked it up to my new sony 75h upconverting dvd player and played with it for the past 2 hours or so. I also have it hooked up via component cables so I could toggle between inputs to see the difference.

I played around with scenes from SPIDERMAN, Fifth ELEMENT SUPERBIT, INCREDIBLES

I must say there is not a night and day difference between HDMI and component. I had to watch scenes over and over very carefully to see any differences. Here is what I found:

The HDMI looked the best on my set at 1080i (toshiba dlp 53hm95). The colors seemd more accurate using HDMI, and i did see very slight evidence of increased resolution when I sat about 4 feet away from the TV. At normal viewing distance I could not tell any difference.

My biggest complaint with HDMI is that it seems to also magnify the defects on the DVD as well. On some scenes the component setup looked much smoother. The HDMI had considerable noise in the background and you can see pixels kind of moving around and making the picture kind of shaky. (hard to explain) I also noticed in some dark scenes with HDMI the background looked like a dark jpeg picture that you try to lighten up. I don't know if this is called macroblocking, but it looks as if the background can't be displayed properly and has jagged lines all around it. If someone wants I can call out the exact movie scenes I am referring to.

So to summarize......HDMI was not a night and day difference over component. It did seem to sharpen up hte picture slightly and express more vibrant colors but the picture on average had much more "noise" associate with it. I would have to say the component hookup was definately smoother.

I am not sure if I am going to keep this player or not. I don't know if my expectations were too high or maybe there is a problem with my display. Maybe I just need to tweak some settings but honestly I don't know what else I can try.

My HDMI cable is the 14 dollar one from monoprice (3 feet in length, 24 gauge)

I started out wanting the 1080P and became impressed with the Toshibas. I didn't look to hard at Samsung because everything comparable was more expensive and I couldn't see any reason for it. Maybe others might have a better comparison.

The problem is that HDMI will show the defects in a bad transfer. There are many inexpensive players that will impress with your set. Oppo is a very good player. P.S. BTW,any audio issues with that setup? Good luck....

Well my replacement lamp I received in January blew on Tuesday. It was getting increasingly dimmer for days before until unwatchable. I called Toshiba Tuesday morning and they are sending out the newly designed lamp right away. That night it died. So 2 lamps under my belt in six (6) months! Hope the new lamps are much better at staying lit!

Please do me a favor when you get the new lamp - let us know if the new lamp is any different than the old one. Specifically, is it any different in appearance and does it carry a different Toshiba part number?

Thanks

Hello,

I just bought the 56HM195 HDTV and sometimes when I turn on the TV, the screen is green. Every channel is has a green tint, but it goes away after 10-15 minutes (if I keep changing the channel).

I have warranty on it. What should I do is it normal?

If you are using the explorer 8200 with HDMI hookup, try hitting the zoom picture button on the remote lower right and it shoul be ok. We have had the problem for 3 mos. It's not the tv.

Hello,

I am new to this forum, so forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong section. My issue is with my Toshiba DLP (52HMX94). I've had the tv for well over a year now, and have been very happy with it.. great picture, and no lamp problems whatsoever.

My issue has been with getting the tv to accept and HDMI input from "upconverting" DVD players. I have tried 2 different players (both non-Toshiba). The first, and LG model, worked using HDMI.. for a short time. After a while, it just stopped working using HDMI (I'd get the Green, flickering screen that everyone is familiar with by now). I tried different HDMI cables, same problem.

Next, I just purchased the highly acclaimed Panasonic DVD-S97S the other day. This one didn't work at all. Again, nothing but a green, flickering screen. In fact, the DVD players on-screen menu wasn't even recognizing the HDMI connection to the TV.

I have tried all the basics.. changing HDMI cables, unconnecting and reconnecting, etc. And, yes, I tested both of the HDMI inputs on the TV (they both work, when connected to my DirecTV HD receiver). Again, the LG upconverting player USED to work, so I don't suspect a problem with BOTH DVD players (that would be too much of a coincidence). What I suspect is, the Toshiba DLP has HDMI compatability problems with certain devices. Does anyone here agree/disagree? After a little more online research today, I've been hearing about all the problems now with "different versions" of HDMI (i.e. version 1.0, version 2.0, etc). Could that be the problem? Is there a "fix" for Toshiba sets that solves this problem? (a fix other than having to buy a Toshiba DVD player to match my TV). I am not real saavy when it comes to "firmware upgrades", etc.

Is anyone familiar with the problem I am having, and does anyone have any knowledge on how this can be fixed?

Thanks for any help!

I havent had any experience with the players you mentioned. I have had with the Sony NS70H (which I returned) and the one I have kept and LOVE which is the Oppo 971H. I have no issues with the Oppo and my 62HM195 :D

badge671,

Sounds to me like something have have gone South/died on your TV. I have the Panny S97 hooked to my 52HMX95 and all is well. I also had a cheap upconverting HDMI player hooked in while waiting on the S97 and the cheapo did fine as well.

I had this problem with my Toshiba 46HM94 with a Zenith DVD player. I bought a Toshiba SD4980, and it works perfectly...no more green screen. From what I've read on the web (places other than this forum), the flashing green screen problem with HDMI-equipped DVD players is not uncommon; in each of the cases, the issue was resolved by changing DVD players. I would suggest you try different brands of upconverting DVD players before considering having your TV serviced. I have the OPPO DVD player hooked up via an HDMI/DVI cable to a Toshiba 46HM84, and I've not had any problems ever.

I seem to be having the almost same identical problem. I've got the 52HM95. Anytime we watch a DVD & then switch the input back to the cable box (Explorer 8300HD receiver) the whole screen has a green looking color to it. I can go back to the DVD player & it's normal. I'm using 1 HDMI input for the dvd & the other HDMI input for the cable box. Sometimes I've turned off the cable box & other times I've changed channels to get it back to normal. Today, it took about 10 min. before I ever got it back to normal viewing. I've got an extended 4 year warranty on it. Just bought it this past Feb. 22. The family has enjoyed the picture on it so far, but it sucks going from dvd back to watching the discovery channel in HD. Checked the serial number on mine over at the Toshbia site & you know what it says about the bulb along with the year extra warranty. :( :( Can someone tell me how to check how many hours of use I have on the bulb? Thanks in advance. :)

Ex4me Can someone tell me how to check how many hours of use I have on the bulb? Thanks in advance With TV turned on: You must be in Ant. 1 mode( on the 195 series try both ways on a 95 series)

1. Press "mute" on the remote - 1/2 mute appears on the screen
2. Press "mute" on the remote again - mute appears on the screen
3. Press "mute" on the remote and hold the mute button -
4. Press the "Menu" button on the TV's front or side panel. "S" will appear in the upper right corner of the screen.
5. Press the "Menu" button on the remote and the "S" will disappear. On the left side of the screen you will see "RCUT" followed by RCUT
ADDR DATA BINARY
224DH 00H 00000000B.
You are now in the service mode.
6. Press “7” and then "9" in quick succession on the remote and you will access the diagnostics page. In the right hand corner is the lamp time in hours.
7. Press "power" button on remote to exit the menu and power off the TV.
CAUTION: Do not use the up and down volume keys on the remote in this menu as it can alter the data and can be dangerous. If this doesn't work on your 95 series display, use same incantation except only push # 9 in sequence # 6 of the above incantation.[Also,I know you have to be in Ant. 1 for a 195 series to enter service mode. On the 95 series you may not have to

Model: 3797203800-S
Desc: Lamp Module Assy Toshiba LV-672
Serial No: W611IQ11893
Mfg Date: 2006.3.13

D95-LMP (23515183)

Other than some new numbers to reference everything else looks exactly the same as the replacement lamp I received in Jan.

I say it that way cus both the replacement lamp and this one had the side chassis cut out nearest the lamp cone. The original did not. The chassis numbers were the same also.

Sorry for the late response. I've usually got about 4 or 5 sites running at the same time. I was reading through the different threads last night trying to find it. Thanks for the such fast reponse. Guess I forgot to check back after reading so much. The instructions that you gave work for the lamp hours. Only thing I think is really different is that you can be on any input for the service mode. I used the HDMI 1 input . Once I was in the service mode, I only pushed 9 once & the info showed up. As of right now I have 510 hrs on it. Guess the wife has been watching it a lot more than she says.  Thanks again for all the help. :)

Thanks for the info. It does look like they issued a new part number for the "improved" lamp (23515183 for the new one vs. 23311153 for the old one).

That's helpful for anyone looking to buy a replacement lamp. You'll want to make sure you get the new part, not the old one.

Now, hopefully the new lamps will actually give a longer service life, as promised by Toshiba.

My 46hm95 does strange things once in a while, like the mem card reader stops working, it loses sound only on digital chanels, etc. It always corrects itself after a "hard reset" (unplugging/replugging). I also get similar problems with my Toshiba DVD recorder.

The DLP TV's as well as DVD recorders are essentially computer based machines. It seems like they occasionally "lock up" or "crash" and need to be rebooted, just like other types of computers do. If it gets to be more than an occasional problem, then you probably need to have it serviced. Unfortunately, those intermittent types of problems are really hard to diagnose & repair. The hard part is to get it to happen while the repair tech is there.

Good luck - I hope you're able to get the problem corrected soon.

hello.
i have a 52HM95 that i purchased in Jan of this year. there is a weird issue that ive been having and wanted to run it by everyone here. when i first turn the tv on. i notice that it looks like the "light" on the top right of the tv flickers a little every few seconds. the few secconds in between it happening slowly dwindles down, but even after i have the tv on for over an hour it still does it a little. its almost like a little shadowing that blinks. its hard to describe. i was just wondering if anyone else has seen this.

i usually keep the lamp on low, but when i switch to high, it seems to go away. last night i then moved it back to low and it seems to stop too, but that was after ive had the tv on for 3 hours or so. i n eed to do some more testing on this, but just wanted to post this to see if anyone else has seen the issue.

thanks

I've had my 62HM84 since 11/04. Recently I see this flickering in the lower-right of my screen during the initial warmup (about the first 30sec), and its only on occasion. I suspect it may be the bulb preparing to fail, but can't confirm. I have not seen the flicker any other time other than during startup.

Ragtop,

You might want to give Toshiba a call about your problems, especially the audio problem. I had the exact same issue and their latest software update fixed the problem for me. The pulling the plug tricked worked for me but the problem was that when I did that the clock on TV Guide On Screen would reset itself and I couldn't schedule recordings.

The software comes on a SD memory card so hopefully your memory card slot will be working when you get it. :)

I've been working with Toshiba since the beginning. They've sent me 3 updates so far. I originally though the last one resolved the audio issue, but it happened again last week. I know they are continuing to work on software updates, and I have given them feedback on the ongoing issues.

And no - the memory card slot never works when I'm ready to do the update. Each time I have to do a hard reset before I can load the software.

Even though I've had some problems with the set, I do have to give them high marks for customer service. They actually call me periodically just to see if the sotware updates are working, or to let me know there's a new version they can send. They also called last week to collect information on any ongoing problems, so they can continue to develop improvements and bug fixes. They again promised to let me know when the next update is available.

Do you use the TV Guide On Screen? I've had nothing but problems with that on my 62HMX94, oftent causing my TV to "crash". I've heard that bad PSIP data can cause problems, perhaps that could be causing your TV to randomly flake?

I don't know what software version you are at but version 1.6.3 has (so far) fixed my audio, channel drops, and TVGOS issues.
The hard resets are rubbish if you are trying to use TVGOS, I feel your pain.

You might want to call them, when I asked for the update the guy on the phone didn't even know that 1.6.3 was out, it was that new. In fact in the TVGOS thread here at AVS a guy posted a link to 1.6.3 for others to download and install. Here is the link to that thread if you want to grab it. (NOTE TO OTHERS, this is only for the 84/94 series)

I agree about the customer service, I have only had one bad experience with them. In fact they just called me this past Saturday to see how things went after I installed 1.6.3.

I own the 62hm195. Out of the box the settings where way off. I have now calibrated it real close to 6500K using the service menu adjustments.

Does any one else know if there are any other adjustments in the service menu I can do to calibrate this tv?

Anyone had color issues via HDMI input? About every third time or so when I switch to HDMI input I get Blue and Red primaries mixed up. Changing inputs away then back seems to fix the issue. This is with Moto 6412 using DVI/HDMI cable.

Mine is a 95 series (running cablecard using Time Warner cable). I have sofware version 1.3.1 - which I believe to be the latest for the 95 series. TVGOS performance has gotten better than it originally was. (I don't even lose the TVGOS data anymore when I unplug briefly to do a hard reset.)

Still, I get the occasional channel drops and audio loss (only 1 or 2 times in the past month vs 1 or 2 times a week originally). I also believe that the channel drops may have more to do with the cable company than the TV.

Do you use the TV Guide On Screen? I've had nothing but problems with that on my 62HMX94, oftent causing my TV to "crash". I've heard that bad PSIP data can cause problems, perhaps that could be causing your TV to randomly flake?

Yes, I'm using TVGOS, and that may be part of the problem. Then again, it could be the cablecard, or maybe even something that the cable company is doing. Hard to tell for sure. I do know its getting better with the sofware updates, so hopefully the problems will eventually disappear altogether.

From following the TVGOS thread, I noticed that the software for the 84/94 and 85/95 sets followed the same version number system. Meaning 1.6.1 was out at the same time as 1.3.1, with the 6 and 3 being the difference in model year. It can't hurt to call them to see if there is a 1.3.3.... If there is I'd request it, it can't hurt especially since I had the exact same problems as you and 1.6.3 cleared it all up... (so far anyway) :)

I'm not so sure your numbering is correct for the firmwares. I have a 95 model and my previous firmware was either 1.2.4 or 1.2.8... I think.

I haven't personally connected mine to a PC yet, but lots of people have. If you do some searching on this thread, you'll find that many have the same problem you are experiencing. There are various solutions given, but most do seem to include reducing the resolution as necessary to eliminate overscan and get the desktop to fit on the screen.

BTW - how are you connecting the set to your vid card?? DVI to HDMI converter cable?? or component video cables??

I am connecting it to the TV via a DVI to HDMI cable (buy it online.. wayyyyy cheaper than futureshop or bestbuy) and I used the ATI catalyst center to adjust the screen size. THe problem I have is that it doesn't adjust for full screen games, so when I set the game's screen size to the 1280x720 native res, it still cuts off the edges. I can play in windowed mode (WoW) but I have found it to be a nuisance, as I have found it to crash more often with only 1 Gb ram. Any help on getting the full screen mode to conform to the windows adjusted screen size would be appreciated.

Local Fry's in SoCal has the 62hm195 for 2275 (brand new) is this a good price to buy? I'm remodeling my house right now and it won't be finished for another two months, should I buy it now or wait 'till then for either lower price or better models available by that time (I consider this model or the Sony 60" XBR1) TIA :)

I paid nearly that for a 52" 720P model with a 3yr extended warranty. Sound like a decent deal but can't offer advice on a better/diff. TV. If you could get them to throw in a decent warranty or even the matching stand... even better. I believe the TV sells for ~ $2900.

I have a 52HN84 that I purchased in October of 2004. I have never had any problems until recently.

The power went out while the TV was on (not from lightning or anything, just a quick power loss not even a second long and the TV is plugged into a surge protector). The TV automatically tried to restart as soon as it came back on and made a buzzing sound that it has never made before but still started back up. The buzzing on start up has gotten worse and it takes longer and longer to start the TV up now, although ever once in a while it will start right up. As soon as the lamp lights, the buzzing stops.

I thought maybe the power going out for such a short period of time affected the bulb so I purchased a new one and installed it, but the problem remains.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Has anyone ever tried to rebuild dead Toshiba lamps? Mine blew the other day (52HMX84) and while I await its replacement, I got eager and removed the dead lamp assembly. It turns out that the bulb itself can easily be removed from the housing by pulling 6 or 7 phillips screws. It cleanly comes out....power connector and all. I doubt that Toshiba is in the bulb-building business. If I can get my hands of the bulb, I can rebuild my dud and place it on the shelf as a spare at much less of a cost than buying a second "new" assembly.

The bulb is marked "SHO66 Hg". The power connector at the end of the 6" pigtail is marked "42531"

Any thoughts out there???????

I know from experience from working at a large industrial facility with dozens of LCD touchscreens that the bulbs may be difficult to impossible to find. My electronics tech guy has done the very same thing in attempt to replace bulbs in our LCD screens. Seems we could not find a bulb or any info leading in the right direction. Darn thing being... it started out costing us $1700.00 to get these units working again. After we asked the local rep for paperwork from the manufacturer as well as asking why a bulb cost so much... the price dropped to @ $350.00. I'm not saying you won't be successful, but if it were do-able.. there would probably be dozens of companies rebuilding these things for less than $200.00 a pop.

Hi all... I have a couple of questions to anyone who is knowledgable about the service menu on the HM195 series.......

When viewing the bulb hours on the "Self check" page there is other information displayed..... does anyone know what the meaning of the other information on this page is? ... mainly the block info and the DLP info......

The reason I ask is that the first entry in the block info is in RED.... means a problem?... normal?....

Also on the DLP line... I think these are temps... of what I am not sure..... I can watch them go up as the TV is on....

I have attached a pic of the page..... any info would be great.....

Thanks

Last time I checked with a couple of lamp manufacturers from China (yes...they made those too), they wanted about US$150 per lamp, in wholesale volume!

That other place in NY wnated US$250 to replace the lamp, any lamp, they quoted.

As I posted last week. I became a statistic. My bulb blew on my beloved TV....

So I called Tosh CS last Thurs...they tell me it will be shipped out Fri or Mon...2 day FedEx...the latest I will get it will be Wed (yesterday) they assured me...sure enough NO BULB...I call Tosh...they tell me "we dont know why it wasnt shipped out" they also told me it was in stock and should have been shipped out....I say OK things happen I guess...just send me out the bulb but make it NEXT day not 2 day as I am already without a bulb for 6 days....they proceed to tell me they "cant ship out next day" I ask to talk to a supervisor... I told them in the immortal words of Yoda - Jedi Master "there is no such thing as can or cant just will or wont" to which the supervisiors reply was...."well then we WONT DO IT" I said you did not live up to your word as a company and ship out when you said you were going to and you refuse to go the extra mile to make an unhappy customer happy??? He apologized and said thats all he could do....then he said he would try to have the bulb shipped out yesterday (Wednesday) but could not guarantee that..so..ALL that to say...I prob wont get my new bulb till NEXT MONDAY as he said he would call me with a tracking # when it was shipped out and no call came, so its prob being shipped out today... 2 day on thurs with FeEx..Monday package received....

No one has any power to do anything out of the norm to make customers happy, when it was their screw up in the first place...ROBOTS for CS reps...policies set in stone....all make for a BAD CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE!!!

bkazepis,

Unfortunately, this is (and has been for some time) acceptable business practice in the US. And it didn't just happen yesterday...it's been going on since the late 80's. More people are complaining now because the companies are more brazen about their lack of customer service. For example, DHL has been running campaigns boasting how great their customer service is; I can tell you based on experiences gathered over the last 7 years that DHL in the South Florida region is the absolute worst of the big 3 (FEDEX, DHL, and UPS). On 5 consecutive occasions I've had drivers not deliver packages because their shift was about to end then lie and say that I was not available to sign for the package. Their station managers have always backed them up, and I've never received a single package they were handling without making at least a dozen phone calls.

As long as the majority of consumers are willing to just put up with this sort of behavior, nothing is going to change. Toshiba could do a whole lot better about this bulb situation. After all, they do not manufacture the bulbs. But obviously upper management doesn't perceive this as a major problem, and so too little has been done to satisfy angry customers or to educate their customer service department (and their shipping department) about the need to do everything possible to minimize the situation's impact on their overall brand image.

Rudy1 - I hear ya....the thing that I dont understand is why companies and the people who work for them dont just say "is this the way I would want to be treated"? bottom line..and the answer should be NO....I guess that job attracts a certain type of person who isnt used to nor perhaps wants to think for themselves or they just simply cant if they want to keet their job...I dont know..

To your other point...time and again we as consumers get shoddy service and poor responses from these companies...youd think they would suffer ie: lose market share etc...but I just dont see it....there is a HUGE opportunity for a consumer electronics company to really step up and set themselves apart from the pack like Oppo for example....if only Oppo made TV's...their connection with the end user and customer service is FANTASTIC!!!

I just got a new lamp for a 62hm195 from Toshiba it has a number of 2351583 on the box but the lamp itself has the number 23311553. Did I get an old lamp in a new box? I called Toshiba and they said I got the new lamp, I'm not sure if this is correct though.

Could somebody please check the number on a new lamp (not the box) and tell me if it is 23515183 or 2331153? Thanks.

Anyone else had any issues with an HDMI connection between a DirecTV H20 receiver and a 46HM94P (or similar model)? Specifically, it seems the display gets real angry when resolution changes between channels - picture and sound blink in and out at about 1 sec. intervals. I can make out some corruption - heavy pixelation and some green "chunks" - as the picture blinks out. Sometimes it will allow a couple changes, other times it only takes one to give it fits. As long as you keep it in channels that are broadcast at the same resolution, it displays beautifully. Also, this problem does not occur using component connection. The DTV tech assumed it was a bad receiver at first, but a second one did the exact same thing. Both were spankin' new. Tried a $50 Phillips cable and a $130 Monster (zero detectable difference in picture quality between the two, btw...) but didn't help. Turning off the display and unplugging it is the only way I can find to get the display back. Tried resetting the receiver, disabling "Native Mode" in the receiver (automatically changes to native broadcast resolution), reset routine on the display and so on. I don't have access to another HDMI-equipped device to test with. It's under warranty (purchased at Costco in late November last year), but our local Toshiba shop is 3 weeks out for Paso Robles service calls! I'm tempted to haul it back to Costco, but what a PITA that would be, and I'm otherwise very happy with this set. Thanks in advance for thoughts, suggestions, and/or wisdom.

From what I've heard, the copy protection stuff in the HDMI spec makes things a bit twitchy, and sensitive to the order in which you turn on the various devices. Here's a couple of things to try.
First, if it isn't too late, return both of your very over-priced HDMI cables and order up one from monoprice.com, you'll save a TON. then, with the money you save, pick up an upscaling DVD player with the HDMI output. That way, you'll have a 2nd device to test with. If the problem persists, it is the TV most likely, but if the problem goes away, it could be the DirecTV box or how you have the two talking with each other.

hope that helps!

I purchased my 52HMX95 in Oct. 2005. I have also been hit with an exploding bulb, the friday before the superbowl --What a great time for this to happen. I also recieved the letter stating that I would be getting a replacement bulb, to put on the self until this one blows. But this is not the problem.

When I replaced the bulb, my problems began. The TV worked fine for a couple of days and then all of a sudden it displayed a test pattern on the screen. This test pattern is a black & white checker board consiting of a total 8 squares. The only way to clear the screen was to hard reboot the TV by unplugging it. This lasted for a couple of days and then went away, until last night. A repair man was called and he simply reset the lamp.

Last night while watching TV, the picture became flooded with red (similar to when an old CRT would lose a gun or have a gun become hyper active) green, blue and then normal. The cycle and length of these would be random. After about 15 minutes it went to the test pattern. Once again it took a hard reset to clear this. Now it only takes 15 minutes for this whole thing to begin from a cold start with a total of 30 minutes of tv watching before the test pattern.

The current firmware is 1.2.2 and a repairman has been called. if the TV goes, it is no big deal since it has the extended warranty.

Has anyone else seen this or know what might be causing it.

Thanks for the info - though I never intended to keep the monster, I will definitely return these cables in favor of one from monoprice. Really good prices. What do you mean when you say, "...how you have the two talking to each other..." ? There's nothing between the receiver and TV, like an HDMI switch or anything - just receiver directly to TV via HDMI cable. Anyone else out there have anything to add? I've seen quite a few references to firmware/software updates for these things, though I haven't a clue if that would help. The TV has software version 1.5.1 dated 5/25/05, and firmware version 1.21. I'd rather not purchase another dvd player if I don't have to - content with the Panasonic I have now. Did some more poking around last night but couldn't find anything substantial on the topic.

I feel for you. So far my 52HMX95 has been stellar. I purchased mine around the same time as you, end of Oct. 2005. Although I only have @ 600 hours on the bulb.

Well just got a call from The Repair facility and Toshiba recomends that my light engine be replaced. You know the part that makes up the bulk (read as 95%) of the TV. He said it usually take 2-3 weeks to ship, I feel this is unreasonable and called Toshiba, The CSR said he was going to escalate this and hopefully something happens.

It sucks haing a $2500 paperweight.

Man, thats frustrating. I also waited a few weeks for a light engine to come in, only to find out that wasn't the problem

At least in my case the set was still watchable while I waited for repairs.

I have noticed that the Toshiba website has added a 62HM196 to their product listing. What is the difference between the 195 and 196? Perhaps the 196s are being shipped with the new bulbs.

Perhaps the "6" is delineating the fact that its a 2006 model and that it has the improved bulb...I guess once we all have the improved bulbs ours will be 196's also... :D

At a quick glance of the specs it looks like the 196 will offer THINC™ RJ-45 Network Capability, whereas the specs on the 195 didn't show that option. Also the audio wattage shows a difference 30W vs 40W.

Shaner1:
I had to call Toshiba today to get another replacement lamp (BTW - the kids are starting to get scared of that loud popping noise the set keeps making  )

While I had them on the line, I asked about a software upgrade, but was told that 1.3.1 was still the most current for the 95 series.

I have a 52HM95 with Channel Master stealth antenna hooked up to it. On one channel here in Dallas (4-1) it starts to make popping noises after about 2-3 minutes of watching that channel. Signal strength is right at 74-77. My TVGOS recently stopped working too. My TV is also making a very loud and noticable buzzing sound now as well.

Ok... it was worth a look. Although when I asked the guy thought it was 1.6.1 but when he checked it was 1.6.3 and the system he first looked at hadn't been updated to show 1.6.1.

I spoke with Toshiba Customer Service and after some research on their end it turns out the 23515183 # is for the label on the box and has always been the same, even for the 23311083 (HM 84/94) lamps. Good thing it can't be ordered, imagine getting a label when your set has been out for days... lol

Theres a note in the Owners Manual that details the process for turning on and off the TV and the HDMI source so the HDCP can reset properly.

P.S. Try a search on your receiver. Seems like I've seen posts/reviews about compatability issues with it through HDMI.

I had a buzzing or humming noise coming from the back of my 62HM195 for about 10 minutes tonite. I am not sure if it was from a fan or color wheel. Has anyone had this happen? It was definitely louder than normal and now it has gone away. Also I have noticed that the pitch of the cooling fan will sometime change briefly when I change channels or inputs. It has done this since day one. Just wonder why that is.

Need to know if it is getting close to time to put CS on speed dial. :(

This has happened twice to me.... First time simple off/on fixed the problem, second time had to do a reset (unplug) the set....

Talked to Toshiba about it... they said it was probably a fan.... the problem has not happen again so I have not requested a service call ... yet.... just don't want peoples fingers in this set if I can help it....

I am curious if a fan inside the unit is making noise, why CS would say resetting the unit would fix it? The sound reminds me of a cooling fan that is has loose mounting screws. This could also be a transformer type of buzz. My biggest concern is that the fan is not working correctly and will cause other overheating problems.

Also to note is that when my first 62HM195 arrived that had a cosmetic problem, the fan(s) were so quiet you could barely hear them. This unit is twice as loud from day one, but is still acceptable (before the louder noise last night).

I had the same issue on my 56HM195. It was higher pitched then lower and the tech said it was the color wheel. They had to replace the entire light assembly - apparently that is the only way Toshiba sends parts with this tv. It was under warranty so I didn't care. The part was $1800 canadian to replace according to the tech -ouch! on a 2 month old set. It didn't happen all the time but was sure annoying when it did. It also seemed to happen whenever I was having someone over to watch a video or something. Karma is a fickle mistress ;)

Good day,

I have a 62HM84 for around 10 months now. Tonight I noticed there seems to be a static artifact on the left side of the screen. It felt like a smudge, and is especially apparent with an all white screen. I know it's not possible for the DLP to burn in, so I don't know what this is. I've tried to take some pictures, but they didn't come up too well, although you should still be able to see the smudge.

Yes, I did clean the screen first, my kid is not that tall yet. :)

Can someone shed some lights on this? Really appreciate any help!

I thought I'd give a quick update on the resolution of this issue I had a month ago. It turns out to be a problem with the light engine. The service guy came over couple of weeks ago, cleaned the glass and the lens, but couldn't get rid of the weird artifact, so he ordered the light engine from Toshiba. He came by today to replace it and that fixed it.

He said the light engine would probably cost $1.5k+ to replace, good thing I still had a few days left on the warranty so it was covered...

Anyway, just thought I'd share that info just in case other people run into this problem in the future.

- Model: 56HM195
- MFG. DATE: Sept. 2005
- Bought: Feb. 1, 2006
- Original Lamp = approx. 553 hrs. = Picture looked very DIM last night!

So, I changed the Lamp setting to HIGH and turned up the Contrast & Brightness a bit, so we could watch CSI Las Vegas.

Looked A-OK this morning after warm-up but I decided to read over my Owner's Manual and it read ...

When to replace the lamp unit (pg. 103)

You should replace the lamp unit:

o if the picture darkens and/or colors fade;

So, I called Toshiba Customer Service this morning around 10am PST, waited about 5 mins. after I got thru the maze of options, ... , and after relaying all my pertinent INFO, the very nice lady said the Lamp Shipment will be delayed and presently the estimate is 7 - 10 days!

Glad I have my spare LAMP!!! ;)

Interesting INFO from her.

1) Early Lamp failure originates from their original Lamp Manufacture (didn't reveal their name) - they quit using those Lamps.

2) The NEW Lamp is being designed by Texas Instruments. :)

Anyway, I have my CSI type white rubber gloves & Phillips screwdriver ready when the time comes to put in my back-up Lamp after this original Lamp Bulb blows!

Once I receive the NEW Lamp, I plan to install that NEW Lamp in and store my Back-up Lamp again (for the next time?). Hopefully, my back-up Lamp has around 500 hours of life since I'm sure that it's design is based on the previous old Lamp design.

Otherwise, after adjusting for the darker picture last night, ... watching CSI Las Vegas in HD was crystal clear, extremely detailed and stunning. :D

There are several websites out there that will show all the warehouse sales with prices/shipping for mail order and will show reviews from people who are satisfied and not satisfied. Just type the model number into any search database and you will see sites that do comparisions. There are new models that end in 196 that are either released or will be shortly. Good Luck!

Just curious, is it still working? My 62HM95 went dim today but so far I have left it on low power and not boosted anything hoping to nurse it along until I can get a replacement. I bought mine January 28 and it has 828 hours on the bulb. I'll be on the phone with them Monday AM I guess.

I'd keep looking, if I were you. B & H may be a good choice, but for such a big purchase, I'd research further. First, check Sears, Best Buy and your local specialty stores. Don't rely on the Toshiba website, it is notoriously out of date. Just be sure to buy from an authorized retailer, especially when buying online. Check www.resellerratings.com, www.bizrate.com and the store review section on www.pricegrabber.com. Find out if the online retailer can be trusted with your money. sometimes, a good deal really isn't all that great. If you're interested, PM me for some suggestions, or check the banners at the top of this website, there is a very good online retailer who helps sponsor this site ;)

Nope, ... my Lamp finally popped last Friday night around 10:20pm PST - while I was watching "Numb3rs"!!! I literally mean, ... it sounded like a 'pop'!, ... then the picture was black but the sound was on. So I just turned it off and finished watching "Numb3rs" on my 20" in my bedroom.

Early Saturday morning I replaced the Lamp w/my eBay purchased Lamp and it took approx. 20-30 mins., ... cleaning the Lamp glass with a microfiber cloth, ... taking my time and photographing the process. Everything is A-OK again :D , I returned the HDTV calibration back to the original values (low lamp, etc.) and the crystal clear, sharp, detailed HD broadcast & upconverted 480p > 1080i DVDs looks like NEW again with vibrant colors and depth!!!

Now I'm just waiting  for my NEW Lamp from Toshiba, which will be installed once I get it!

Next Friday NITE's DVD is ... "Ice Age" for a few families, including one that never saw the original "Ice Age". Really! Her husband wants her to see it first before they see "Ice Age 2 - The Meltdown". :p

NOTE: One thing I did notice during the Lamps last 4 hours of life was that on bright white scene's, various uneven shadow smears were in the background. Normal colored scenes masked those uneven shadow smears. Installing the NEW Lamp removed those shadow smears.

Well today I had someone come and check out the loud buzzing noise on my 52HM95. Sure enough the guy says it's the color wheel gone south. So he has to order a whole new light engine because Toshiba has not made the color wheel available by itself. He said it should be here withing 3-5 days and then get installed sometime next week. It's very annoying now, because I have to turn the sound up more because it. I checked my lamp after he left and it shows 1418 hours on the original lamp. Not to bad I guess since some of you guys are only getting 600-800 hours on yours. I talked Toshiba into sending me a spare one since I'm on the list for failures. :D

I'm thinking about buying a refurbished Toshiba xxHM195, either the 62" or 72" version.

My experience up until now has only been with Samsung DLP's. To familiarize myself with the Toshiba, I've gone through many posts here on AVS to learn about the differences.

I see all of the problems with the bulb-life and fan noise.

Is this something that has been rectified, or should be rectified in a "refurbished" model in the event I purchase one?

I am also wondering about the overall dimensions of this set vs. the Samsungs. The bezel looks very small, which is a very important factor to me; however, I noticed the back doesn't curve in like the Samsungs -- meaning that extra room may be required for the A/V connections. I am interested to learn: does anyone know the specific bezel size, and if I have this up against a wall in the back, will I be required to give it some extra space for the A/V connections?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions!

I bought my 56HM195 Toshiba about 3 months ago and ever since I've had it I've noticed that when I hook a device using component cables the screen flickers, but when I use HDMI it's fine. Now, I don't mean flicker like when the bulb is about to blow (that just happened a week ago). I mean I can see lines jumping around the screen when I play my xbox 360 or my xbox which are both hooked up using component cables. Has anyone else noticed this, and is this something I could be concerned about, or is it just a byproduct of the analog to digital conversion using the component cables?

That remains to be seen. From what I have read the problem is restricted to the 2005 models and they claim the replacement bulbs should have a much longer life expectancy. I called them on Monday and the guy said I should have my bulb this week so I am keeping my fingers crossed. Mine went dim on Saturday and it finally blew out last night. The only time I boosted it from low power mode to normal was for an hour Sunday night but it lasted longer than I expected it to once the problem started.

So how long on average is it taking Toshiba to send out the replacement lamp? Mine blew Friday night in my 46HM95 after 4 months. I wa snot able to call them until Monday, but they said 5-7 business days. I seem to keep seeing post of though, from others saying they get promised times that come and go and have to call back multiple times.

Sometimes when i power the TV on after a prolonged rest (overnight, say) the picture is dark, almost purple, only 4:3, and either scrolls up/down or left/right. Switching inputs sometimes fixes it, turning off and on sometimes does. It seems like if i leave it wonky for a couple minutes, it somehow "warms up" and then if I cycle power, it turns on correctly. Anyone seen or heard of this?

thanks

I have never experience or seen what you have described above.

So, if that happens consistently & it's not random, ... I'd recommend that you schedule a Service call and when they are there, turn it ON, ... so they can see what you are describing.

Hi Everyone. Let me just say this forum is the greatest. It has answered my more technical questions when no one else was of any help. The information in these forums is incredible.
I purchased a 62HM195 about 6 months ago and i love it. I had no problems until recently. I notice when I turn on the TV and then the Scientic Atlanta 8300 HD DVR cable box (connected through HDMI), I notice a quick flicker (reddish) before it hits full brightness. The picture does not seem to be dimming yet though to suggest a failing bulb. Anyone experience this issue? Is this an early warning sign I should take seriously?

Thanks!

Oh, and to ArTT Vandelay. I did experience that exact problem a while back but switching inputs corrected it every time. I know have my remote turn on TV first and then source, and then power down reverse order. haven't had the issue in 2 months although I am not 100% sure thats what was causing it

Is it a flicker or a gradual brightening? If its a gradual brightening that is normal. Flicker I'd schedule a call for... :)

Its only a slight red flicker as its starting to light up to full mode. I will pay extra attention the next couple power cycles and see if its getting worse. Once it comes fully on, the picture is perfect.

Thanks for the reply!

UPDATE: Got my Lamp today from Toshiba! Lamp MFG. Date: APR 2, 2006

So, from my 10 am 4-21-06 Friday call to Toshiba - to today = 5-days. NOT BAD! ;)

I'll install it tomorrow sometime.

Total used time for my Bay replacement Lamp Hours = 30. (HDTV Lamp Hours = 600)

So my new Lamp will start @ the 600 Hours mark! Hopefully this one lasts longer!?!?

NOTE: My Video REFERENCE Calibration (DVE) was different between my original Lamp vs. eBay replacement Lamp, ... so I plan to re-calibrate my Video again. I'll post the different values later.

I've gotten the slight flicker with my 360 since day 1. I haven't paid it much attention since I only really notice it when I'm using the dashboard. I thought for a while my lamp might be ready to blow, but after switching back and forht between inputs I realized it was only the 360. The cable box and DVD player are both HDMI.

I'm having a problem with my 52HM95 that has me slightly annoyed and worried...

Whenever I'm watching an HD source I occasionally get a bright "flash" on the screen. It's usually so quick that it's almost unnoticable. I have gotten a good look at it a few times, though, and have noticed a few things:

- It is only happening when watching an HD source - HD channels from my SA Set top box or when playing a DVD on my upconverting DVD player. It definately occurs more frequently from the cable box, though. I'm not sure about my XBOX 360. It may have happened once but I haven't had time lately to play it enough to know for sure.

- Problem is intermittant. I didn't see it once during Sopranos on Sunday, but it happened every 10-15 minutes during Big Love. I watched a DVD on Sat and didn't see it once, but last night saw it about every 30 minutes.

- I've never seen it happen while watching a SD channel.

- The "flash" only appears on the bottom half of the screen. It does seem to curve upwards on the sides.

- On more than one occasion I saw that the "flash" was actually thin, white, horizontal lines. On other occasions it appeared to be a ghost image of what was on the screen at the time.

Anyone ever seen anything like this before? I'd like to give Tosh a call about it, but can't schedule anyone to come out for a couple weeks. I'm also afraid that if they do they'll end up sitting on my couch for an hour and never see it. Because of that I'm tempted to let it go and see if it gets any worse so I don't waste any time off of work.

Great! That means there is hope I will have mine before the weekend since yours actually only took 3 days discounting the weekend. You were lucky to have that eBay lamp, I have been "watching" the news in the morning through the AV receiver only and everything else on one of my PC's that has a Hauppauge card in it.

Yep, hope you get your Lamp today or tomorrow!!!

FYI:
- The New Lamp box was doubled boxed w/pop-corn.

- Once you remove the Lamp Box, on top is a plastic package w/Yellow "Do Not Discard" warning card. Underneath the Yellow "Do Not Discard" warning card is a pre-paid FedEX sticker and Return Instruction sheet. On the other side of the Return Instruction sheet is a form that you can fill out with your personal INFO & HDTV Model / SN.

A couple of things to keep in mind:

1) Wear the CSI type white thin rubber gloves thru-out the installation.

2) Visually check the Lamp Safety glass and if required, use a clean micro-fiber cloth to remove any smudges, dust, etc. Fogging it with your breath is all that is required to remove light smudges & dust.

----

Installing NEW Lamp TIPS:

The following assumes your HDTV is UN-PLUGGED and the blown Lamp is removed!

1) Carefully slide-in the Lamp slowly until it stops.

2) Align the two Lamp frame screws to the main Assy. inserts and hand tighten the screws a few turns each.
.... a) Once the Lamp was in placed, I removed my left glove to hand tighten the screws.

3) Then, recheck the Lamp seating by sliding it forward.
.... a) In my case, ... it moved & slid / locked into place.
.... b) Don't force it, this process just makes sure that the right side power connectors lock into place.

4) Continue hand-tightening the screws until they meet resisitance.
.... a) In my case, the left screw met resistance sooner, so I used my Phillips screwdriver to finish tightening it. (see Note 5)

5) DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE SCREWS!!!
.... a) The right screw was hand-tightened all the way, & I just used my Phillips to finish it - NOTE: Barely turned the screw in.

6) Put the Lamp Cover back on.

7) PLUG-In your HDTV! You're done! :D

What exactly are the symtoms of a bad light engine? Also if someone has seem the symtoms of a bad color wheel, I would love to see a description.

Thanks

Well, I am back. My TV (52HM84) this morning went to green grainy picture on all inputs (including unused inputs which elimiates cabling issue). My TV is on a swivel so I adjusted it slightly and picture returned to normal. Any ideas? Could this be a color wheel/light engine issue or perhaps something else?

I don't want want to get flamed on the main forum, so thought there are probably enough people that watch the end of this thread that might help...

I've searched the forum and looked through this thread, but it's hard to describe exactly what's happening, so it's hard to search for it.

First my setup:
56hm195
Dish vip622
Oppo DVD
Denon 1906

oppo via hdmi to tv
denon via component to tv

Sometimes when i power the TV on after a prolonged rest (overnight, say) the picture is dark, almost purple, only 4:3, and either scrolls up/down or left/right. Switching inputs sometimes fixes it, turning off and on sometimes does. It seems like if i leave it wonky for a couple minutes, it somehow "warms up" and then if I cycle power, it turns on correctly. Anyone seen or heard of this?

thanks

I own a 62hm195, purchased in DEC. 05. with a cable box for my signal. Occasionally (50%) I experience the same issue that you described. After sitting over night, I turn on the set and the image is purple, 4.3, and scrolling right to left. Switching inputs corrects the problem. I talked with toshiba to no avail. I'm hesistant to call a service tech since it dosnt happen all the time. I was thinking maybe it is a signal level issue

Mine was waiting for me when I got home from work today. Manufacture date is 3/27/06. I am quite happy with the turn around time, I was actually only without the set for part of Tuesday night until this afternoon. Total time on the bulb once it first went dim is 34 hours, it was at 862 hours when I checked after putting in the new bulb.

If you have already purchased your TV that warranty will do you no good. You need to buy the lamp warranty AT THE SAME TIME as your TV. This is the case for just about every lamp warranty out there. On the other hand, extended warranties (that cover everything but the lamp) can usually be purchased up until 90 days BEFORE your original warranty expires.

I would love to post the settings on the board. However by posting my settings I could be taking away a calibration job from someone on the forum. I have spent a lot of time calibrating this set. Out of the box the picture was pretty bad. Now it looks great.

I will however give you a hint.

Start in movie mode before you make any adjustments. If you start in standard or sports the you will have crushed blacks.

Thanks Mike,

I calibrated the color using the service menu controls. It is much better then before. However I have some black crush going on. When I turn the brightness up it helps but then the picture looks washed out. Using Avia I set my brightness at 48 and contrast at 50. Color is at 40. Are there any other controls in the service menu that adjust that amount of black in the picture? Mikeyari....maybe this will help you. The user controls that I posted are irrelevant unless you have the proper binary values for:

CNTCB
CNTCR
CNTCG

Besides I had the values when I was experiencing the black crush problem. I have now fixed that problem and those settings are different.

I feel bad for you enmoco that you are watching a non calibrated Toshiba. Your TV can do so much more.

Yes I understand it reverts back to prefrence mode. However in order to avoid the black crush you need to first start off in movie mode. Here is a test you can do.

Start in standard mode change all the settings to what they are in movie mode. Then compare the settings. I bet you will see a difference.

It is actually a very good tip.

The old Toshiba CRTs had a similar issue with VSM.

I have no problem helping people out.

How would you feel if you just spent $300 on a calibration and then someone posted your settings and eveyone else got them for free?

Its a visual thing. What you purport to be great I may not like. I have seen that a great many Toshs that look GREAT OTB.Nothing that couldn't be adjusted to MY liking, once again. Short lamp life and inconsistent lamp brightness (break in to wear out)has made a poor case for Tosh DLP calibration.Calibration has its place,so be it.

This is quite possibly the best display option for gamers and movie buffs alike. Generally not as expensive as plasma or LCD sets, or as large in set size as those aging rear-projection or current giant CRT sets, DLP offers a bright picture that is ideal for gaming. Digital Light Processing technology is currently being used in digital movie theaters, and while there were issues with some of the first-generation technology, this is probably one of the best choices for a future TV set purchase. The color issues, including poor green and black levels with the first-generation products, have been addressed and DLP offers a picture as true to life as any other set type.

This micro-display technology essentially utilizes a color wheel and micro-mirrors to replicate an image via a replacable rear-projection light source. Unlike rear-projection CRT, however, which typically was highly susceptible to damage from static images that could "burn" into the display, DLP is virtually impervious to such harm. Additionally, total dark conditions are not required with DLP, but the darker the room conditions the better the picture will look. For gamers who tend to play well into the wee hours this shouldn't be a problem.

Just bought this TV 2 months ago from Sears (under $2000) and the bulb blew Sat.
But the picture is fantastic on the HD channels! I don't play games so can't help you there. If you get a model (http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/tacpassets-images/notices/dlplamp.asp) that has bulb problems I'd call Toshiba a couple weeks after getting it and ask for another one for standby.

Just tell them that you noticed that the picture is dim, ... getting darker vs. when you first got it. Our Owner's Manual specifically recommends the call if the picture starts getting dark!

You can also mention that your HDTV qualifies for the 2-Year Warranty because your S/N is on the web.

do you have to send toshiba back the broken bulb? For example, could I call them a few weeks after my set arrives and tell them the bulb blew so that I can get a new one to use as a spare?

Yes, you have to send back the bad bulb.

Hi everyone, I'm fairly new here, found this site 2 weeks after I bought the 72HM195. After reading some 180 pages in the last month or so, I am beginning to think that I should kick myself in the butt for not doing more research!

After looking at more than 100 TV's, I took the advice and bought the brand/model with best picture. It must be a mistake!

BTW, I bought my TV at Canadian Costco. The First one developed a humming sound after 3 days so I call Toshiba and they recomended their service depot - Audio Video of Burnaby. Few days later one guy show up and told me he had to replace the Light Engine ($2000) under warranty. Another week went by they finally show up with the LE and promptly replaced it. Humming sound is gone but somehow the picture does not look as good anymore (I later realized he probably never perform any calibartion setting for replacing LE - not sure).

Two days later, I lost my OTA video but still get sound. I decided to call Costco, they told me to bring the TV back and they will give me another one. So ....pack up the big box, down 2 floors, load into the truck and 50 miles later, got a new TV (with slightly older serial number).

The second TV works great for 2 weeks then I lost OTA video again! While I was pouring thru the rest of the 180 pages here. Found out that "Hard Reboot" will cure lost OTA video & how to check Lamp Hours <--- on this model, after mute, mute, mute, press menu on the set for "S" then press menu the remote then press 9 only. This is where I think I got into serious trouble. Read on......

While trying to get the lamp hour, instead of pressing 9, I did press 7 & 9 (as per instructions here) but nothing happen so I tried 7 & 9 again and still nothing happen, all I get is "S". Little did I know that after every press, you need to wait a second or 2 for things to happen. Eventually after many tries and shutting the TV off and on, I found out that just pressing 9 will do the trick. BUT, did I press something else?? Not very likely because I read the warnings. Power off the TV and go to sleep.

Two days later, I turned on the TV and was horrified! video from satellite(480i) and DVD(480p) into the Component input are super bright with solid color blotches & no contrast as if total video overdrive! 1080i to Component input seem to be just fine. A few more test confirm that anything other than 1080i into any component input will drive the screen picture to super bright and solid color blotches. Even 720p did the same. I call Toshiba service and explained to them what happened so another guy show up in a few days. This time this guy doesn't know what to do or say except he will ask Toshiba how to fix & what to do. He could not figure out how get into the service menu, even after I showed him the instructions. On his way out, he also invite me to go visit the shop and see how many newer Tosh they got for repair & I should be looking for Grand Vega (should I?).

Another week went by I finally got a call from the service depot: We can not service your TV because Canadian Costco did not buy "Canadian Warranty", Luckily, we got paid for the first one. Not wanting to deal with taking the TV back, I offered to pay them for the repair and was told they don't know if it can be repaired (or is it we don't know how to fix this?)!

Well guys if you read this far, You will understand that I really love this TV and the picture quality but quite frustrated with everything else. What are my option? Anyone care to guide me thru the service menu to see if we can get the picture back to normal? Or, should I take it back to Costco for a refund and go buy the newer Canadian model 72MX196 (which is now $500 cheaper)? Or, get a Sony 60" XBR LCD at about $1000 more and accept a smaller screen size?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

As noted above, yep, ... you must return the Lamp. The packaged includes a pre-paid FedEX label to send back the blown Lamp & a Form that you fill-out with your pertinent INFO, etc.

Aside from that, ... Your set has to be within the qualified Serial Number (2005 Models) list located under their ...

If your HDTV is not on the list**, you probably have the newer re-designed Lamp or original Lamp that is not from the identified defective batch and you won't qualify under this Lamp program.

Note: 2 year lamp warranty on the original lamp if your serial # is on the bad list as referenced above.

And the usual 1-Year Lamp Warranty if it's not on the Serial Number list (see Toshiba's link above)!

I've put an asterick in my post above for more clarity! (thanks enmoco)

It doesn't last very long after it starts to go dim!

I got my Lamp 3-days (not counting weekend) from my 10am call.

WOW!! You were not kidding. The lamp blew today. I forgot to call too.

Question-- Who do I call for the replacement lamp?

I have the extended warranty(including bulb) from PC Richard for 5 years. I only bought the set at the end of Dec, so I am still under warranty from Toshiba also. I have a known lamp issue.

Also, Do I need to recalibrate my set after replacing bulb?

Thank you for any info

Aside from the "pop" and black screen to follow, what does the bulb look like after it blows? Is the bulb itself intact with broken glass inside or does the actual bulb shatter?

Almost two weeks now since I picked up a 62HM15A with stand from CostCo, and am loving it. Even though I have yet to see any HD on it! DISH Network says it'll take three more weeks before someone can install the upgraded dish, though my VIP622 DVR is sitting at home waiting already.

Right now I have my Series 2 TiVo hooked up by Svideo, and a VCR on the other composite channel. Have a Panasonic DVD player on one of the ColorStream ports, and a D-Link DSM-320 on the other to stream audio and video from my computers. The VIP622 will, of course, be on HDMI when it's installed.

One thing that annoyed me is that glaring red TV Guide logo. A bit of electrical tape fixed that!

Next project will be, using the information in this thread (and there sure is a scarily huge amount of that to sift through), trying to hook up my laptop to it. I'd sure love to see my flight simulator on that screen.

After about six weeks of ownership of my 62HM195, last weekend I finally got around to dragging my desktop down the hall and connecting it to the TV via DVI/HDMI and IEEE1394.

I waited because I needed a new video card, which finally was installed. A PNY AGP card based on NVIDIA 6600 technology. First, things went swimmingly -- much easier than I expected. The underscan correction I needed was right there on the display menu. I was all set and running in about five minutes. The image quality was a bit disappointing -- a little too smudged and grainy for intense text work -- but not bad at all. I ran Flight Simulator and it looked great. Still stodgy due to my slow old computer, but otherwise great looking. As I expected, the TV can display computer output with no trouble whatever. It is of course just a question of whether the card meets specs in the generation of its output. It does.

OT: I hooked up the IEEE1394 because it was easier to hook it up to the TV than to my DCT 6412 P3 STB (one of the latter's many, many bugs). The TV sees the PC, but doesn't know what to make of it. When selected, the TV correctly reports that the IEEE1394 stream is bad, which it certainly must be since my PC is not generating one. I was more curious if the online instructions for capturing the STB output work -- they do. Perfectly. (Again, my slow old puter caused some dropout when recording a big ole HD stream, but it worked perfectly on svelter material.) The problem was, once again, with the astoundingly ****** Motorola box. It's got an unfixed bug that causes total malfunction of FF and RW when anything is plugged into the IEEE1394 hole. (I had the DCT daisy-chained to the TV.)

In summary, everything related to connecting a PC to my little home theater setup works just fine, except of course for show-stopping bugs caused by the POS STB.

That is a sticker that easily peels off leaving no residue. Underneath is the same logo looking a lot like the transparent network logos. Get that tape off.

lmao!! Amazing! had this tv for about two months, the last couple days ive been complaining about how dark the picture was, tried to kick up the brightness and it was still unplayable for xbox games. middle of a tv show and POP! bulb blows. Im not playing this game, the warantee is still good on the tv, gonna tell them i want a diff model, going to get "proof" about how often this happens on the model and see if they will work with me on this. crap is i payed another 800 dollars for this tv then id wanted to...

Relax,
Toshiba got some bad lamps from their supplier. You'll get a new one under warantee, and may be eligible for an extended warantee on the lamp. The new one's are supposed to last longer (but only time will tell).

Once you get the new lamp installed, you'll get right back to enjoying the great picture (which is why you bought the set in the first place, isn't it?).

I tried hooking my Moto 6412 to my 52hm94 via IEEE 1394 for grins other day. PQ seemed same as component. I did notice that pause, FF, REW etc all caused massive tiling and dropouts. As soon as I hit play again image returned to normal.

05-03-06, 06:49 PM
Yes, I noticed that too. But that's yet another bug! The bug that is really awful is that once you connect an IEEE1394 device, FF and RW are screwed when dealing with playback of the box's own DVR recorded stuff. The DCT 6412 is a total POS. It works in a minimal way, but if you stray from the two or three basic things it does (almost) OK, it simply doesn't work at all. But that is all off-topic here. I'm sorry for starting the discussion.

Called TCS,had me take it out while online, apologized profusely about all the problems I've had,(cc issues, new LE, 5 mos. old the 10th) said they would replace my set if I had anymore problems. I said "How about now" he laughed and said "if you have anymore". Said the new lamps have never been out of stock. Shipping out today hopefully, said look for it Friday,if not, then MONDAY!!!!!

I have the 52HM84 and purchased the TCP2200 transcoder. I was able to get 960x540p, 640x480p, and the interlaced modes added successfully with powerstrip. However the 720p modes have been a real pain with the picture jumping around at 1280x720p. I finally was able to get a stable picture at around 1166x660, but even then some lines are warped just a bit. I was wondering if anyone has successfully got good timings for any of the 720p modes?

I am on my second bulb for my 62HM95, and have received the letter...My problem is after my first bulb blew I left the access door open for about two days. Thinking I should close it I did. When I received the replacement bulb FIVE WEEKS later, I noticed a very grainy picture on HD. When watching white backgrounds (especially Hockey on HDNET), it is extremely noticeable. If I shine a flash light on the TV when it is off, I can literally see strands of dust on the inside of the screen and strange circular images.

I have lived with it, and haven't had time to call in a tech..until I got no picture and a flashing red light (one second intervals), which means a bad BUS line, whatever that is.

Tech dude is coming out tomorrow, so hopefully he can address the BUS line and the grainy thing (maybe cleaning the lens or the screen will help the latter).

Oh by the way, the Optical Audio output doesn't work either.

At least I am getting the new bulb, right...

Hi Guys
I just bought a new DLP 62HM15A from costco about month back and here is the problem.

I connect the TV's HDMI port to a DVD (samsung upward convert) HDMI port...

the picture looks great but i have observed at least 3 times that the TV suddenly swtiches off with red light blinking continously. The green light is off.

I have to AC power off and restart.

I have also observed that the problem only has happened in the nights and I have not been able to replicate the problem in the mornings.

I have tried various outputs from the DVD player including 1080i and 780 P..but the problem continues...

The Toshiba service centre guy tells me it "may be" a firmware issue and he has ordered the part...god knows what he means..

Do any one of you have any experience /advice please..?

thanks

You do know the optical out for audio only works with signals from the built-in tuner. Doesn not work if source is anything else.

Is it possible to arrange that the RCA audio outputs are still active even if the TV is off? When I'm streaming audio to my D-Link DSM-320, whose outputs go to the TV, I have to leave the screen on to hear the audio. I'd rather not waste the energy and lamp lifetime, but if I turn off the TV the audio doesn't get piped through.

With TV turned on:

1. Press "mute" on the remote - 1/2 mute appears on the screen
2. Press "mute" on the remote again - mute appears on the screen
3. Press "mute" on the remote and hold the mute button -
4. Press the "Menu" button on the TV's front panel.
6. Press "9" quickly on the remote and you will access the diagnostics page. In the right hand corner is the lamp time in hours.
7. Press "power" button on remote to exit the menu and power off the TV.

CAUTION: Do not use the up and down volume keys on the remote in this menu as it can alter the data and can be dangerous.

Just for your info....While the Toshiba's do have the POP feature, it can only be utilized when using two different sources. The split screen images CANNOT be from the same source. One source has to be a video source (HDMI, Component, Composite, etc.), the other must be an antenna source. Don't know if this is something you can work with. Because of this, I find this feature useless.

Hey everyone. I have owned a 62hm195 for about 6-7 months and have about 1000 hours on it. Recently I have been having a new problem of where I turn on the TV and then the cable box(connected via hdmi), I get white snow although the sound comes in perfect. To remedy the issue, I have to switch to a different channel (HAS to be different format, HD to non-hd or vice versa) Sounds like my TV isnt changing resolution correctly. Anyone have any insight on this? I thought I read someone here had a similar issue but I cant find it in any of my searches.

Update: I seemed to fix the problem by rebooting my cable box. My cable box must have been screwing up the tv even though it was off when I was getting the white snow. I have a Scientific Atlanta 8300 HD DVR box. Has anyone else had this issue with this combo or any other combo? Thanks.

I have a 56HM195 with an SA8300 HD DVR hooked up via HDMI. Occasionally when I turn on the tv I get what looks like a negative screen. It will be either blues or greens. I tried rebooting the cable box but it didn't always work. If I switched to an SD channel and then came back to the HD channels, the problem cleared. The cable box is set to default to NBC HD.

This weekend I turned the TV on and saw pink scrolling bands. I could see the picture behind them but the bands were about 4" high and the length of the screen. I changed inputs and channels and it was definitely the TV.
I unplugged it and plugged it back in and they were gone...

Didn't happen again all weekend.

Is this a light engine issue that others have seen?

I am on the 3rd lamp on this 52HM95 and it is barely 6mos old!

The issue I'm having with a 46HM94 and a DirecTV H20 HD receiver connected via HDMI is that the picture and sound blink in and out at about 1 second intervals if changing a channel brings about a resolution change - 1080i to 480i, for example. Only way to get it back is to unplug the TV for a few seconds. Component connection works fine. Wasted an hour on the phone with clueless Toshiba rep. "That's strange - let me thumb through my manual, very sorry, blah, blah, blah. Hmm...well, I dunno..." Pointless. Also tried 3 different receivers, different cables, reset routine on the set, etc. Repair guy is supposed to be here next week after a 6 week wait. I figure I'll wait to see what he has to say then decide if I'm just gonna drop it off back at Costco in exchange for a Samsung or JVC, or maybe that Akai set they have a screaming deal on at the moment.

I have had a similar problem. When trying to tune into some HD channels(mostly 720p) screen goes black but I have full audio. Nothing shows up till i switch the channel. I belive it is the cable box and not the tv.

It's not a problem with the cable set top box but it seems to be a problem with the Toshiba DLP. I've come across what you've been describing but this seems to happen when I switch to a HDMI connection (DVD). It's input number 6 and what I have to do to clear it up is simply switch inputs and all is well. It rarely happens but it does happen.

I am an owner of this model for about 3 months now, and have been trying to get the noisy lamp cooling fan fixed. From day one, I noticed a low buzzing sound coming from the TV. It is mostly noticeable during quiet segments of a movie, and is very distracting. For a $5K TV, it shouldn't make such noise. In all my years of building PCs, I have never heard a cooling fan sound like this. Since I bought the TV online, I couldn't easily return it for another one, so I called Toshiba customer service. I went through their standard unplugging/plugging the TV, and the noise remained. I got a service tech to come look at it, and he verified that the noise is indeed coming from the lamp cooling fan. He said Toshiba might consider it acceptable, but agreed with me that a cooling fan shouldn't make such noise. He went ahead and ordered a replacement fan under my warranty, hoping that maybe Toshiba has since replaced the part with a better model. Nope, the replacement fan was exactly the same when we compared the two, and it is just as noisy after he installed it.

At this point, I'm going to write Toshiba and express to them that the noise level of this part is unacceptable, and that they need to replace it with a quieter fan. The noise to me seems to come from the hub, and not actually from the amount of air it is moving through the fan blades as compared to a standard computer case fan. The fan looks to be a standard 120mm low profile fan, with a 3 pin connector, so surely Toshiba can find another supplier with a quieter model.

I hope this post will motivate other owners with noisy Toshiba DLPs to complain loud enough that they'll issue a recall. Other than this, and some slight geometry problems, I love this TV. The PQ is excellent, and I love watching 1080i HDTV of broadcast shows as it truly displays beautiful 1080p images. But the noise it makes prevents me from recommending it.

Hi I was looking at buying the 62HM195 OR getting a Samsung HL-S6187W. The advantage of the Toshiba is 12 bit color at a similar price, with an extra inch of display (Samsung is 61"). Do you guys have any suggestions before I put down my cash and buy this?

:( Well, it happened again! The bulb blew on my 62HM15A I bought in November at Costco on March 23. Toshiba shipped me a new SUPPOSEDLY IMPROVED bulb on March 24. It blew tonight, May 8. PLease tell me it was NOT one of the new improved bulbs!

Can you describe these geometry problems? I see NO defects whatsoever in regards to geometry on my set.

Well, the TV initially had perfect geometry. Since the tech came out to replace the fan, the image is now trapezoidal. Not by very much, but definitely noticeable when viewing 4:3 material. The top of the image is wider than the bottom. The tech is coming back to check it out, as I didn't notice this before the supposed noisy fan repair.

The tech is very nice, though he won't readily admit to possibly causing the screen to get out of wack. But I do know that he had to pull out the entire light engine to reach the fan connector. He showed me as he worked on it. When I called him back to tell him I now notice a trapezoidal image, he said he can't understand why replacing the fan would cause that. He said the light engine pulls out on a track, and that nothing should have gotten out of adjustment. Well, that may be his opinion, but nonetheless, he "touched" the light engine, and it's apparently delicate enough that pulling it out to replace the fan knocks something out of alignment.

So basically, my geometry issue is probably due to poor engineering on Toshiba's part in designing a TV that's difficult to service, or due to an error made by one of their authorized service people. I sure hope the tech can fix it, as I'm starting to regret trying to get a quieter fan replaced and ending up making my TV worse than before. If Toshiba won't recall the fan, I can live with the noise, as I've pretty much gotten use to it. I may try to replace it myself after it's out of warranty should I have the gumption to.

Would it be possible for anybody to post a picture of the rear of their 62HM195 Television? I'm considering getting one but am trying to work out dimensions/cable runs and types and would like to see actual placement of these components. I'm at work so I can't go run out to the store and look at one of theirs.
I tried searching here and google but had no luck...

Much appreciated!

Actually, from what I understand, this isn't really an issue with your TV, but actually a problem with micro-display rear projection TVs in general. You may not have noticed it previously, but all rear projection TVs such as yours has this problem with 4:3 material. From what I understand, this is due to how the engineers designed the projection system to accomodate a short cabinet depth. Less depth = more distortion on 4:30 material. On widescreen ratios, much less of an issue.

So, the tech is right, it isn't his fault, it is just the nature of narrow-depth rear projection TVs.

I have had a 52HMX84 for about a year and a half now, Directv ran thru the HDMI input. With no complaints other than the blub going out with the set being just out of warrenty
I contacted Toshiba with my problem telling them of all the toshiba products I have had
and that would be the last if the blubs need replacing that often at $200 dollars a pop I
don't need it. So they sent me a blub hoping this one last longer than the first.

Don't know where this "fact" came from. There are no geometry issues on my set. The cabinet design does not distort the images.

If that were true, you'd see distortion on all programs (16:9 and 4:3), although it would be more noticeable on 4:3.

Well, I wish that were true, but the geometry misalignment can be visible when you pull up the TV's TVGuide On Screen program guide, which is 16:9. That's how I plan on showing the tech the problem when he comes back. I'm pretty confident that the TV had no geometry issues initially, as I'm pretty anal when it comes to things like this. I'm sure I would have noticed it before.

I'll post an update, the tech is scheduled to come in Tues. the 16th.

Alright I know might be a really stupid question. I have a 72hm195 and Moxi DVR. The owners manual says I cant use the tv as a computer monitor but it appears per the posts that a PC connection is possible despite the manufacturers recommendation. I would like to store and play DVDs and CDs, and utilize standard PC functions with my tv as a monitor. Can I connect my laptop? How do I do this? I looked in the HTPC forum but it does not specifically address the hm models. Again, sorry if this is a horrible question. Any help is appreciated.

Hi gang, first timer here. Been looking for a long time at a 62" set. I think I've settled on the 62HMX95. However, POP is VERY important to me (like to watch two games at once). Someone on here stated that the POP only works with one cable and one antenna source? I was planning on having my cable box hooked up through HDMI and a regular cable (from a splitter) in to one of the other inputs. Would this work? I don't need to see the digital channels (100-199), just the regular (0-99).

If it doesn't work, I would have to look at some other sets. Would my set-up work on any of them?

Thanks in adavnce for your help.

I have had a similar problem since owning my TV since last Sept, a 56hm195. About every 3-4 weeks it happens. I notice that if I leave the set on a 720p channel like ABC and then turn it off overnight, thats when it happens. Not often every few weeks. To clear it, I switch to a 1080i channel and picture looks normal.
I don't have a cable box, an off air antenna is used..

I think its related to the TVGOS system. I say that because I also have a LCD Sharp TV and it did it every morning after an TVGOS overnight update. Sharp replaced it and it's problem is gone. So may be its related.

The last couple of days I've noticed that when I first turn on my 56HM195 there are some very faint shadows that flicker across the screen. It gives the effect you'd see if a moth or something flew in front of a light. It is very faint though.

Indeed, first thing I tried - doesn't seem to matter which device is powered up first. Usually it has fits right away, pretty much as soon as the resolution changes. Occasionally, however, it will allow several channel/resolution changes before going on the blink. Someone on this forum speculated that it might be an oddball copy protection issue, but that's about all I've received in the form of insight. DTV tech said they had quality issues with initial bach of H20 receivers, but that video output would fail on all conncections, not just over HDMI, and certainly not across 3 new receivers. I don't have another HDMI source to try - local Costco is thin on upconverting DVD players (like none). Toshiba did say there is a firmware update for this particular TV, but that it dealt strictly with a known cablecard issue, so they didn't want to send it my way. Seems the odds would be slim for me to be the only guy with this combo, but maybe I'm the only one having issues. It's a real bummer because I'm otherwise very happy with this TV. I just hope Costco doesn't require that this thing is returned with original packaging. Eeek. Thanks anyhow.

I believe that is a sign of an impending bulb failure. Do a search on this thread and you'll see others report seeing the same "flickering" on their screen before the bulb blew. It happens for the first few minutes after turning the TV on, then goes away. Some have reported you can make the flickering stop by setting the lamp to high bright mode. Toshiba has posted a bulletin on their website on extending the warranty on the bulbs of some of their DLP TVs. Go to www.tacp.com, and under the customer support link, notices, you can check via serial no. if your TV qualifies for the bulb warranty extension.

Can someone who has experienced this tell us about how long it took from the time the display started flickering to the bulb going out completely? My set (friggin' Murphy's Law!) has started to flicker when I first turn it on. It's been doing it now for a little over a week. I called Toshiba customer support, and they said that could be sign of an impending bulb failure. When I told them that my set's serial no. is in the range of sets with known deficient bulbs, they asked if I registered my set with them. I have, so they said I should automatically be getting a new bulb in the mail by the end of the month. I had to get off the phone at the time, and couldn't follow up and ask if I could get some confirmation of when the bulb ships. I'm going to call them again to get the info when I get a chance.

I noticed the flickering but I didn't note how long that lasted and basically didn't think much about it since it went away.

So, my estimated Lamp Life, from when I first noticed my picture looking very, very DIM & DARK (Thursday night) to the eventual "POP" (next day Friday night) (http://community.webshots.com/photo/547283085/2954945220032577752utXLme) is approx. 8-10 hours.

I had a back-up Lamp :) so I didn't ask for a confirmation number after it shipped.

Not bad considering Customer Service est. 7-10 days.

MISC INFO:

- The New Lamp box was doubled boxed w/pop-corn.

- Once you remove the Lamp Box, on top is a plastic package w/Yellow "Do Not Discard" warning card. Underneath the Yellow "Do Not Discard" warning card is a pre-paid FedEX sticker and Return Instruction sheet. On the other side of the Return Instruction sheet is a form that you can fill out with your personal INFO & HDTV Model / SN.

TIPS:
A couple of things to keep in mind:

1) Wear the CSI type white thin rubber gloves thru-out the installation.

2) Visually check the Lamp Safety glass and if required, use a clean micro-fiber cloth to remove any smudges, dust, etc. Fogging it with your breath is all that is required to remove light smudges & dust.

----

Installing NEW Lamp:

You're done! ;)

My set's serial # is on the list also. I had my bulb blow in 4 months and got a replacement bulb that was not one of the new and improved ones. I also called after the letters began to go out and asked if I too would be getting a letter/bulb.

No, I did not get a letter and as of yet no bulb.

I do not believe that calling TCS answers many questions, but instead usually creates new ones. When they seach their database it is seldom as effective as we hope. He had trouble locating me although my bulb came straight from their depot. Why, who knows.

When my new bulb blows, probably this month or certainly in June, whether I got a letter or not is not going to be an issue. I will get my new bulb for I meet all the necessary criteria.

My set's serial # is on the list also. I had my bulb blow in 4 months and got a replacement bulb that was not one of the new and improved ones. I also called after the letters began to go out and asked if I too would be getting a letter/bulb . I do not believe that calling TCS answers many questions, but instead usually creates new ones. Thanks for the reply, enmoco. Good to hear that it will work. Any reason why I can't get the 62 HMX95 owner's manuel off the toshiba web-site? It is not listed. Is it the same as the 62 HMX94?

Try the 62HMX85 on the Canadian site: http://www.toshiba.ca/web/product.grp?lg=en&section=2&group=6&product=5158&category=

The manuals are under the "Downloads" tab. Although they don't carry the HMX95 model, the HMX85 appears similar. They seem to have more manuals than the US site, and the manuals generally apply to both markets.

Yes, the flicker is sometimes the first sign of lamp failure (followed by dimming and then the pop)

My first lamp flickered for a couple weeks before dimming for about a week and then popping. The second lamp never really flickered noticeable. It just dimmed rapidly and died within a few days of the first sign of trouble. So I guess there's no real "formula" for predicting how long you have, once the symptoms start.

This procedure doesn't disable the TVGOS,it just stops it from displaying when you first turn the display on.

Thanks for the replies. My wife isn't remote control savvy (she is very pretty though) :D and will wake me up in the morning about an hour before I need to get up with remote control issues (the TVGOS has cropped up alot since it automatically displays when the set is turned on).

My other issue with the 62HM95.

This set isn't picking up the non encrypted digital channels from my cable service.
(Ant1 input set to cable > channel scan > analog channels and it will list all the encrypted channel numbers but will not list or display non encrypted channels).

I have a HDTV set in bedroom w QAM tuner and it will tune in the non encrypted channels and I will get the non encryted channel #s and punch in #'s via remote on the 62HM95 and the set will revert to channel 2 analog.

Did I miss something in the setup or channel scan or is this an issue with the 62HM95?

I also had a bad buzzing noise come out of the back of my 52hm95, after about 45minutes of watching the set. I have had 2 fans replaced the lamp fan and the DLP fan. I still here buzzing. I went to where I purchased my set and turned the 52hm95 display TV on. I have to get my ear down behind the set to hear the fan. Well I have 4 more months on my warantee, I am going to hang on and see if things get worse. My HD picture is awesome!I suspect my color wheel

Based on your description, I assume you have no cablecard so you are just connecting straight cable to ANT1. You should be able to get all the digital-in-the-clear (non-encrypted) channels.

As you said, you go into the TV's SETUP/INSTALLATION/TERRESTRIAL

- Go into INPUT CONFIGURATION and make sure ANT1 is set to CABLE (Not Antenna).
- Then go into CHANNEL PROGRAM and Select ANT1 to let it auto program. It should take up to 3-4 minutes.
- Now to verify, if you go into CHANNEL ADD/DELETE for ANT1, you should see all the programmed channels. The analog ones from 2-66ish, then start seeing the digital channels at something like 77-1, 77-2, etc. This verifies that the TV is seeing at least seeing something on these channels.

Now if you want to tune to one of these clear digital channels, I assume you're entering the format with the "dash", i.e. "7" "7" "-" "1". The dash the button below the 7 on the remote (it has "100" and "-" on it).

If this still doesn't work, connect the cable to ANT2 and repeat the same steps above.

I have a cablecard so my ANT1 is autoprogrammed with the CC, but I have straight analog cable connected to my ANT2 and I can tune to all the clear digital channels on ANT2 as described.

I have one of the above which I think is the PAL version of the HX series.

The other day the color went off dramatically. It seems like the red was lost and the picture was predominantly blue/green with hotspots in parts of the image. Spoke to the techs who said they had seen this before and it just needed the eprom reset, which could be done via the service menu. Since the set was still under warranty they would not give me the codes and came over and entered them themself.

Certainly once they got to the service menu and clicked to the right place, adjusting some settings got the color back. Since all looked fine they left. Alas when I later checked the image coming in from my PC (via VGA) the image now had a purple cast to it. This is very obvious when playing video files and clearly demonstrated when I connected up a laptop showing a video and watched it on the Toshiba also.

Got the service guys to come around again. They agreed there was a problem but didn't know what to do since they said the eprom reset for color balance should have worked for all inputs including VGA. I am now waiting for further information as they said they have to contact Toshiba.

Anybody else seen this sort of problem? If so, what did you do?

I am guessing that since the US versions don't have VGA most of you using this set to watch video on a computer are using DVI from video card, vga to component or something like that?

Thanks for any experiences or thoughts?

Yes, I've done exactly as stated above. The tuner is seeing the encrypted channels but none of the clear channels. My cable has a splitter (line to PC and line to TV). I suspect it could be the splitter. I'll try running direct line to TV and see what happens.

Your description is very similar to one of the problems on my 72HM195, I returned the TV and went for Sony KDSR60XBR1. I just could not accept the fact of paying over 5K to have so many problems on not one but 2 TV's. Checked the sony forum and did not see so much problems.

you are right. I have observed that the TV goes off usually in the nights..it goes off irrespective of any thing I am watching cable or DVD...i am certain that the problem is with the TV. The Toshiba auhtised guy says he will replace the lamp.but i think it may not sort the problem.

I am thinking of returning it as well..

Are we playing with semantics here or did I miss something? I'm not expecting to receive a lamp in the mail automagically. From what I understand, based on the website and my serial number, my set should qualify for the extended lamp warranty. Do you know otherwise?

Anyone have experience with the 62 HM15A's being sold at Costco? Is this unit really the same as the 62 HM94 as suggested by other members?

How about geometric accuracy on 720p material? Access to internal service settings for full calibration?

Any other comments?

I purchased a 62HM15A at Costco in November 2005. All was well till 3/23 when the lamp blew. Toshiba sent me a new improved lamp on 3/24 which lasted till 5/08. When I spoke with TCS on 5/9 Mary Lynn stated I must have a TV problem, not a lamp problem (as the new lamp they sent WAS the new and improved one) so in addition to the new lamp they are sending I should schedule a tech visit for about a week off and have him fix the problem and install the lamp. Tomorrow was the day scheduled for the techie, but no lamp as of yet. So I called TCS back this afternoon and learned TCS had never ordered me up a new lamp! As I am scheduled to be out of state from Saturday till the end of the month, this saga is going to drag on till June, at least. Am starting to wish I had not bought a Toshiba. If I had a pickup truck, I would be considering returning it to Costco, as I understand their return policies would allow me to do so.

I think you are on the right track. I initially had a some problems with my digital cable reception due to signal strength. After I took out some splits in my coax feed, my reception on the toshiba improved and I could pull in all the channels I expected to get.

Todd,

Contrary to many of the issues on this thread, I've had my 46HM95 since last November and have had no problems. The TV I have is currently eligible for the 2 year bulb warranty as well, but I have yet to have any issues with the bulb. I did one firmware update to 1.3.1, I have a cablecard installed, and the TV Guide OnScreen works fine.
Is this the kind of review you're looking for? HTH!

Todd_zilla

Yes, so many reviews just talk about problems... people with no problems are typically silent. Now, having said that, I had a bulb problem issue on my home theater front projector (BenQ PE7700) that I don't want to re-live. They have solved the issue now, but I really don't want to go through the whole issue again... I just need to know if I can trust the current production models. I don't need videophile quality, I just don't want it dead on the shelf for weeks at a time...

Todd,

I have the 46hm95 and had the lamp fail. I had a replacement lamp in 4 days and then they sent me another one to have on deck in case the replacement blows. Other than that, the display has worked great. No problems at all. I highly recommend these.

Sounds like a pincushion problem. If the light engine isn't positioned correctly it would definitely cause horizontal or vertical pincushion. Tell the tech to take his chewing gum out this time. :)

Sounds like a pincushion problem. If the light engine isn't positioned correctly it would definitely cause horizontal or vertical pincushion. Tell the tech to take his chewing gum out this time. :)

Tech came out today. Did not fix anything at all, just noted what I reported about the geometry. We even measured it, and the top of the image is wider by 0.5 centimeter on each side. He said there's no way the
"trapezoid" of the image can be adjusted on the Toshiba DLPs. He still claims he doesn't know how changing the fan could have caused it.

So now he's going to research the problem and get back to me. He said it's possible the whole light engine will need to be replaced. Now that he sees what I was talking about, he says he'll go back to Toshiba and find out what to do next.

I called Toshiba customer service about the noisy fan issue, and they recommended having the service tech check it yet again. They said to call them back if the problem still isn't resolved to my satisfaction. They're basically still not admitting to putting in lousy fans in these DLPs. The tech also "looked" at the fan today, and agrees it's just as noisy as the first one he replaced. So we'll see how that goes.

I really would hate to have to start bashing Toshiba DLPs, as the set displays great HD images, and am very impressed by the picture quality and features. But these nuisances are unacceptable to me for a $5,000 TV. I sure hope they pull off something here for me, as I really do want to love this TV.
