new04quest 08-03-06, 02:15 PM What I really want to accomplish, is TV Guide recording. Clean Hi Def recording, without renting a cox hi-def DVR. Maybe using a DVR with DVD recorder and a hard drive.
Can this be done?
Something smells illegal about them not authorizing your DVR. COX DVR is available everywhere. I was told by COX customer services rep; it is okay to purchase it and call them to get it authorizes. But they told me a different story after I purchased the DVR..!

BMELVIN 08-03-06, 10:13 PM The new HM196 series sets are now out and in Stock at Crutchfield. I am definitely interested in the Toshiba 72HM196 set. HAS anybody purchased this unit yet? And what is the major difference between the HM195 set? I was looking at the Sammy 71 set but I really dont need the 1080p inputs. Also do the newer sets still have the glare screen I have heard about?

I don't think they have a glare shield per se... just that the screen doesn't really have glare...
new04quest 08-04-06, 09:53 AM It is good news. The Toshiba 56HMX96 works with COX CableCard very well. The picture and sound is among the best for the current DLP. Last night; I got the TV guide to work.
I haven't got the Sharp LC-37D7U work with TV guide. The picture and sound through COX CableCard is great. If anyone knows how to get the TV guide to work for this model, please let us know..! Thanks.
preludejtstyle 08-04-06, 10:41 AM Anyone have the 62MX196 yet?

set the guide to cable and give it a day to update... then hope that all works fine...
I've never done it with cable so I'm not too sure how to "fine tune" the guide...

fishacura 08-04-06, 12:20 PM Just got my 56HMX96 and am VERY pleased with the pic quality. Was a little surprised at the level of brightness on low lamp setting. Very good in my room...no need to use the high lamp. LOVE the POP feature and everything about the set. For the money, the best deal around!

snatches 08-04-06, 05:31 PM I am having the 56HM66 and stand delivered today and I was wondering if there was any tweaks posted here for these models as of yet. I was really impressed with these sets picture quality and in store I thought the picture was much better than the Samsung 720p DLP's. I have some THX setup guides on a bunch of DVD's but if there is any settings outside of the parameters of the tests on these discs it would be nice to no ahead of time.
Thanks!

Toshiba is a founding member of HDMI but this years displays offer NO 1080p inputs. They are the only major manufacture not offering this feature. Whoever made this decision will cost them many missed sales.

dtvcity has 62mx196 in stock and is now shipping, great price also!!
vfr781rider 08-05-06, 04:32 PM You'll be waiting longer than a year or two, I'm afraid. And when it does come, be prepared to pay more than you did for your TV for a unit like that.
The PCWorld I received today has an article about a Ricoh drive (for PCs) that can read Blu-ray, HD DVD, CD, and standard DVD. It's not that far off :)
masterp2 08-05-06, 07:00 PM If you get cable you have to get their DVR... not really any way around it...
when Tivo series 3 comes out, you can do it by using a cablecard (if CC is even still supported by cable companies by then)...
Is there no way to hook up a TIVO, if even non-hd? I thought that was what G-link was for? confused
What does G-link do for me?

We Were Soldiers PQ is great on the 56HMX96 and the THX EX SQ is wonderful with Pioneer Elite 72xxxx receiver and Bose 7.1 speakers.
Cameron3395 08-05-06, 11:55 PM I have a question about the mx195 tv's. I'm confused about the 1080p info with this tv. It says it's a 1080p set but I've read it doesn't accept a 1080p signal. I'm a rookie looking for my first HDTV. I will be buying in about 3 weeks. Thanks for any info anyone can give me.
preludejtstyle 08-06-06, 12:06 AM ^^Do a search. this has been answered probably a hundred times. Your tv will de-interlace to output/display 1080p, but it only accepts 1080i.

Your statement is misleading. The TV will accept 480i/p, 720p, as well as 1080i signals.
preludejtstyle 08-06-06, 11:46 AM Sorry, i worded that incorrectly. It will not accept 1080p, but will accept everything else.
Wow, i can't speak/type apparently.
I currently own the toshiba 46hm95 and every two months my lamp has blown. right now im working on getting the tv replaced and the store i purchased it from now has the hm66's in stock. Do they have the problems that the hm95 series tv's had? im sick of dealing with bulbs blowing up every two months! Its either this or im gonna trade in the tv and get something else. Tired of dealing w/ these DLP's... :(
Thank you
Traveler62 08-06-06, 08:55 PM I finally bought a UPS to go on my TV after I experienced a power loss the other night from a storm across the state line. I also have a monster power HTS 1000 that I had before that is still feeding my other components. I have hooked up the TV to the UPS and the UPS Power is straight from the wall outlet. Has anyone researched if this is the best way? I could come out of the HTS 1000 to the UPS supply power, would this be better? The UPS is not big enough (375 Watts) to power the whole system, so feeding the HTS 1000 is not possible.
judremy 08-07-06, 10:33 AM I seem to have some overscan on the bottom of my Toshiba 46HM95 DLP. The input is set at 720P (I think that is the native res). This happens on the HDMI input from my DVD player (OPPO) and from the cable box. I have the 4 year Best Buy service plan, should I have someone come out and adjust it? Is this something I can do myself?
Thanks all,

I don't think you can adjust the overscan on these Toshiba DLPs. Via the service mode menu, you can only move the image around vertically and horizontally. Search this thread for how to enter the service mode, but be forewarned, you can damage the set permanently if you attempt to try this yourself.
Purchased a 56HM195 from SEARS on 2/11/06 with 5 year service plan. Friday night, set goes pop and dark. Set Date of Manufacture was 12/2005. Maybe (estimate) 1000 HIGH hours on lamp. Will find out when screen can be seen again....
Call SEARS service and they schedule call for this Thursday AM but say we should call TOSHIBA Customer service to get a free replacement lamp from them first or else we will lose 4 days in solving problem by waiting for service man to call TOSHIBA for free replacement lamp which takes a week to 10 days to get. Service writer says TOSHIBA has been having some big problems with lamps in their sets and it's keeping the SEARS Techs pretty busy?????
I go Google the set and find this thread.
This AM, I call TOSHIBA Customer service. Give her model, date of purchase, serial number, name and address (curious, since I registered the set online when it was delivered, so shouldn't they only need the S/N to bring me up?), tell her SEARS told me to call TOSHIBA first to order the new lamp, and then the Cust Rep says, "What does the lamp look like?" I tell her I don't know, I have never seen it.
She says I have to remove it from the set and describe it to her before she can send a replacement. She then tells me to go to the TV, unscrew the lamp door, get a Phillips screwdriver for the screws on the lamp tray, and pull the lamp and describe what the lamp looks like. While I do this over the next 5 minutes or so, she can be heard humming softly to herself (maybe buffing her nails at the same time, too?) over the phone (it's on speaker).
I get it out and she asks me to describe it to her. Since I'm a bit miffed at having to go through these hoops, I tell her it looks like a small silver metal box with holes in it with some black plastic parts attached. ;) She says, 'No what does the lamp look like?' I say, 'Isn't this thing you had me take out the lamp?' She says 'Of course it is!'. I say "Well how the hell I am I supposed to know, I'm not a TV repairman!' She says to look in the window and describe what's inside. I ask her why do I have to describe what you see through my window? She says not MY window but the lamps window. I ask her which one is the window? She says the 'Hole with the glass over it.' I tell her some little wires and a bunch of broken glass. She says "OK, we'll ship you a new lamp. It should arrive in 5 to 7 business days."
I ask her if this lamp will last more than 6 months and she says it should last 8000 hours on the low setting and 6000 hours on the high setting. I said that is what the book says about the lamp that's in there, but it didn't. She says it will because they test them and this is a new lamp designed last fall to fix the problem. I said 'How do you know it will last that long if you made a new lamp last fall and there are 8700 hours in a year, are the new lamps already failing now? And if you made the new lamp last fall to fix this problem and built my TV in December, how come you built it with a known bad lamp?' :D S I L E N C E.....
She says 'Is there anything else I can help you with?' Nope, that about covers this problem, and I'm not exactly thrilled you're making me play Tech for a year old known MAJOR problem.....
"Thank you for calling TOSHIBA Customer Service."
Sooooooo.... if you're calling for a replacement lamp, have a regular and Phillips screwdriver handy or pull the lamp in advance and have some savage amusement at their expense.... after all, you can't watch the TV and you bought it to entertain you.

Also remember that these sets do not scan like CRTs, i.e. each pixel is generated by an individual mirror (aside from wobulation). So I would expect any overscan to be coming from the source since the TV will display 720P HDMI without any additional conversion/processing. Otherwise the problem is with the video board in the TV.
Can you try a source other than HDMI, i.e. how's OTA or direct cable. If you put the cable directly into ANT1 or ANT2, go into the TV's setup, make sure it's set to Cable (not Antenna) and have it scan all channels. You should be able to find some HD programs in the clear. If the problem is still there, then it's likely a video processor issue in the TV and will need to be serviced. If it's not, then there's a problem with the input or possibly the HDMI port.
DanzBorin 08-07-06, 03:39 PM sounds like you got somebody who was too lazy to type... they should have all of the info of what model gets what lamp on hand... :(

She should have been able to confirm the lamp failure from the blinking LEDs on the front of the TV, but I guess they want to make sure the lamp itself has failed before shipping one and then finding it was another part. You would have had to follow that procedure anyway to replace it as outlined in the manual, so at least now you're already halfway there. Just follow the instructions carefully when replacing the bulb and make sure the lamp door is properly closed and secured. Otherwise the TV will not turn on.
Yes, Toshiba has had an issue with premature lamp failures that has been covered extensively on this site, so if you're interested you can read a lot about the frustrations of people early on. The new/improved lamp was announced in March, so any bulbs manufactured after that should be the new design. Toshiba also extended the warranty on the original bulb from 1 to 2 years, and sent a free new lamp style replacement to anyone whose original bulb had already blown and they received the older style lamp as a replacment. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones that's still on the orginal bulb after almost 10 months and about 2000 hours.
BMELVIN 08-07-06, 08:31 PM Can anybody comment on whether there is any GLARE on the 72HM195 set? I am shopping for a 70 inch model and saw the Sammy in person (too much video noise on some channels) but I can get the 72HM195 for a super price online but I have not seen one yet. I have read somewhere (I cant remember where) that the Toshiba 72HM195 sets have much more glare than the Sammy and Mits 70+ inch sets. Can anybody comment about this who actually has one of these Toshiba sets? I am ready to buy, this is my only hold up. And I am assuming the new 72HM196 sets would be the same?
judremy 08-08-06, 08:32 AM Can you try a source other than HDMI, i.e. how's OTA or direct cable. If it's not, then there's a problem with the input or possibly the HDMI port.
I'll try this tonight and let you know if the "overscan" is occurring on the ANT1 connection directly from the cable line into the house and also I'll try it thru the cable box (to see if that is the issue).
Another weird issue I've had is when changing between a 480P signal and a 1080i. When changing from the component input or RCA to the HDMI (set at 1080i), the display would show three smaller images of the picture instead of one large one. Not sure how else to describe it other than that if it could be three channels at once, it would be like the TV in "Back to the Future II" except slightly overlapping. I'll have to get down the exact way I make it occur.
Thanks for the help. I'll report back what I find...
Jeremy

backcrackr 08-08-06, 12:14 PM I am having trouble with a hm 95 52 inch that has the local tv tech baffled. I tried to research the problem on this thread but 200 plus pages was to mucch so i hope this hasn't been discussed to death previously. tv was bought new sept 2005 and on march 2006 the lamp blew out. previous to this I had noticed a problem with the tv powering down when i would switch between hdmi1 and colorstream 1. I thought after the lamp blew that would fix this issue. replaced the lamp and it made no difference. when first turning the tv on from a cold state ( hasn't run in 8 plus hours) it takes three tries. I will get everything from no pic one time to the pic coming up then the tv powering down to a black and white image ( no color) to switch between hdmi and colorstream 90% of the time the tv will auto power down, the led lights give me all different codes each time, green blinking red blinking, both blinking ( no standard at all) if i first turn it on and get it to power up and immediately change from one input to the other it powers down telling me the lamp it to overheated and it hasn't been on 30 secs ( being off for 8 hours previous) the 1st time the tech looked they had no idea told me it worked fine in the shop, got it home worked poorly right away. it is back over there again and i am looking for suggestions to talk to the service guy about. it is hooked up to a hd mpeg 4 dishnetwork reciever and a toshiba dvd (colorstream) any ideas?
stovenator 08-08-06, 12:43 PM I'm looking at the 72 inch Toshibas, specifically the 72hm195, 72mx195, 72hm196, and 72mx196. From looking through the threads, it appears the only difference between the 195 and 196 is the faster processing on the 196.
The 195's also list Firewire ports (IEEE 1394), that the 196's don't have.
Looking at the specs on the Toshiba website, I also see the MultiWindow is not listed on the 196. What is this, exactly?
Also, BLAC only appears on the HM models, not the MX. Is this just poor spec sheet info?
Between the HM196 and MX196, it looks like the HM196 has 1 fewer composite input, no VGA input, a little poorer speakers (10W vs. 15W), and no "3D Colormaster Color Management System" (whatever that is). Are these really the only differences between the two?
The 195's both have the higher composite input connections, and the 15 Watt speakers.
Given that neither the 195 nor the 196 will accept a 1080p connection, and that a VGA connection isn't all that important to me, I can't make heads or tails of what set to go for. My gut tells me to go with the newer sets (196), because of the lamp issue. What is the general consensus, regarding the differences between these four sets?

I have this exact set, and get no glare at all. The screens on most DLPs that I've seen are a matte finish, like most computer LCD monitors, so they will not reflect light back like old CRTs and plasma displays that cause glare.
AZHDTV1225 08-08-06, 09:21 PM Anyone seen this TV? I was at Costco out here in Phoenix today and I saw one of these. It says that it is 1080P so I was wondering if this is the Costco version of the 62hm196? It was 2799 for the TV and stand.

My set shifts all images down and to the left just a bit but 720p input exagerrates the problem. I re-centered HOR and VER using service menu and test images. All is good.
Also, I understand this may be different for your set/sources etc, but 1080i via HDMI is sharper/higher resolution image as confirmed by ISF tech.

there is lag normally, but the toshiba sets have a video game mode which eliminates it (first hand tested)... ;)

you just go into the menu and find game mode, then set it to on...
you have to do this each time you turn the TV off and then on...

It still pisses me off (I hope that's not against rules :) that the MSRP went down $700 since the 195 model that I bought. I'm used to that on computers which I have bought many of. Yes, I understand that these TVs are nothing but computers with large display devices. My MX195 is the most expensive TV I have ever bought and now, if I had waited 9 months, I could have saved $700. Of course, I have thoroughly enjoyed the last 9 months, so that's less than $80 a month premium I had to pay. Not too bad from that perspective :)

I bought mine around the same time as you, so I know what you mean. But I guess 9 months from now they'll be even lower AND have some newer capability. If you want to enjoy HD I guess you can't chase the technology. ;)

i have read bits and pieces but not all 211 pages. i understand there was a bulb problem prior to march, and that toshiba is offering free new style bulbs to owners of the old style.
other than the bulb problem, what issues would make me consider the extended warranty?
thanks alot.

Just want to clarify a misleading comment. Toshiba is not offering free new style bulbs to owners of the old style. What they are doing is if your TV serial number falls within a certain range (as verified on their website), your original old style lamp will be covered for 2 years (instead of the standard 1 year warranty). If your original lamp failed prior to the new/improved version coming out and you received and old style replacement Toshiba sent a free new style as a spare. Everyone else at this point is covered under the standard 1 year warranty on the orginal lamp and whatever the terms are on a new replacement, typically 90 or 180 days.

I noticed you and several others have been wanting opinions on the Toshiba. I own the 62HM195 and have not regretted buying it for a moment. I think there are two important things to look at for a display that is to be your main entertainment piece. 1080P Display and 2 HDMI inputs. I have been reading peoples opinions here since last November and bought the 62HM195 in February. The lamp on mine did go out after 3 months, but Toshiba was fast at getting a new one out and they claim now the lamps will last. There are a few instances of light engine problems from some members which is most likely about a normal percentage of failures. The picture is amazing with a HD source. The HM195s & MX195s are the way to go. Still haven't heard from any owners of the new 196s that should be selling now.

I went to look at it today, and we have one here at our local Fremont, CA costco. It was the best looking 1080p DLP i've seen yet. Just stunning.
I went to best buy and CC afterwards and they didn't have it. There is no other information online about it. Looks like I'll have to call or email toshiba about it. It was a really slick looking picture in HD. No RBE, no artifacts, color was clear and not over done. Looks similar to a 62hm195/196
Price was great. It has dual HDMI, and an RJ-45 ethernet port which i think means it's closer to a 196.
What's the difference between a hm195 and an hm196?

UniversalGC 08-13-06, 04:57 PM The good news is I recently became the owner of a Toshiba 56HM195 and 72HM195. I feel like I got a great deal on both, as I paid just over $5,000 total, including 3-year extended warranties on each TV.
The bad news is we're building a new house that won't be ready until late October. We sold our old house, and we are in an apartment until our house is completed.
Soooo....my new TV's will have to sit in a storage facility for over two months before I can use them. It's going to be a long two months, but it should be worth the wait.
mcoughlin 08-13-06, 07:00 PM Well Toshiba doesn't want to replace my light engine. They would rather give me a credit at Best Buy for exchange. That's ok with me. After 3 lamps, a signal board and my issues cannot be repaired I am ready for something else. I assume I got a lemon. But even so I am gonna switch to a 50" Panasonic Plasma. I understand the difference between the two technologies and pros and cons of each. I am just happy Toshiba took care of me so that I could have a choice. It just stinks to go through all the research again. I think I can't go wrong with the Panny Plasma and I hope I don't have the issues I had with the DLP. Anyhow I wish you all well with your DLP's as I will be a convert and switch over to the plasma threads.
ranster 08-13-06, 09:48 PM Well, glad it worked out for you, after multiple issues. I have done the first bulb replacement and I am waiting for the next. I hope my Tosh 52" DLP keeps going strong!

Mummoguntabo 08-14-06, 11:02 AM Hi Everyone,
I'm having a problem with my Toshiba 52HM84 DLP Rear Projection TV that I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on. When viewing HD content I'm getting faint red and green lines crawling up the screen. I've been watching SD and HD content on this TV for months and never noticed them (not sure if they were there). Recently, I bought a Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD Player and noticed the lines while watching my first HD DVD. I switched the HD-A1 over to Component output and the lines were still there, however very faint... unnoticeable unless I was really looking for them. SD content doesn't seem to show the lines at all. I then switched the HDMI cable back over to the Cable box and the lines were very visible... just as with the HD-A1. I had been using a $15 HDMI cable I purchased online, so I swapped it out with the HDMI cable that Toshiba packaged with the HD-A1 and the lines are still there... no change.
I can only guess at this point that it might be a power conditioning issue or a problem with the Television. Any ideas what could be causing this?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Fettastic 08-16-06, 03:22 PM I was thinking about getting the 72" because it shore looks purdy. But you guys are replacing a $300 bulb every 3 fricken' months!?! That's $1,000.00 a year! That's completely insane!
I was initially looking to upgrade my 65" Toshina CRT but it's looking like now is not the time. My CRTs are 2 years old and they run like new. They'll probably last another several years as long as I'm careful with burn-in.
I got into the service menu right away and tweaked it all out so it looks damn good. Sure I gotta go back in every few months for a few minutes, but it's a lot better than the thing just fricken' winking out on me!
DLP technology just seems to have too many problems right now. Maybe in a couple of years it will be more reliable, or at least have much cheaper bulbs. I guess I wouldn't mind switching out the bulb every 3 months if they cost $20-$30.
Hi all - anyone else experience a problem with their 56HM195 not turning off, also not allowing any buttons to be hit and displaying the antenna channel 1.. upon rebooting it may sit on 'now booting' for 25 mins? Blue light is on, yellow blinks 3 times in one second then pauses then again?

Hi, I have a Toshiba 52HMX-94 which I bought on Sept 19, 2005. It is now nearly 1 year old, still has the original bulb with 3,150 hours on it.
So at about 325 days of use, its been on an average of 9.6 hours/day !!!
Picture is still just as great as it was the day I installed it.
It will be interesting to see just how long this builb will go, would be great if it blew before the 1 year warranty expires.
If it doesn't I still have a 4 year extended warranty on it which does cover 1 bulb replacement.

I currently have 1.3.1 on my 46HM95. What I'm wondering is what issues does 1.3.2 solve over 1.3.1? I haven't really had any issues with my CableCARD or my TGOS. The only issue with TVGuide is that there's a couple of channels that cannot be programmed, such as TNTHD that does not have an available TNTHD listing in the TVGuide setup that I can assign the channel # to. Besides that and no digital sound output on Analog channels, I really have no issues. Does anyone know if 1.3.2 solves either of those issues?? Thanks!

Bought a 52HM84 in August of 2004 for my sports bar. It is on at least 12 hours a day. The lamp failed after two years, which is at least 8,000 hours on the lamp. Got another one from Andrews Electronics for $218.00 plus shipping. The picture looks great with the new lamp.
Also, Toshiba planned well in making the lamp unit easy to replace. Our DLP is on a shelf 10 feet up on a wall. It would have been a major hassle to bring it down to replace the lamp.
Thanks, Toshiba. :)

I picked one up yesterday.
It is a HM196...when looking at the system info about the TV, it states this in the model information.
in the software window, it has 2.2.55.0 / June 20, 2006 / FW 34
Yesterday, I unpacked it and hooked up with a cablecard and everything was fine. I did the setup for the TV guide as well. Was receiving my local HD Time Warner stations clearly.
Fast foward to tonight. I get home around 9 pm and turn the TV on. All of the analog channels are basically snow and all of the digital channels have a message stating the signal is low.
I remove the cable card and do the TV reset procedure and still snow. I try ANT 2 and same result. I pull out a 50' RG6 cable and run it from another cable outlet that is working properly and hook it up to the new toshiba and still snow.
My guess is that somehow something got messed up when the TV tried to acquire the TV Guide data.
my Component connections still work (DVD and XBOX360 still look great), but no cable right now...
not a happy camper right now.
edit: I hooked up the TV to my old terrestial VOOM antennae (which is still on my roof) and changed the input from cable to antenna in the SETUP and still not getting any local analog or digital stations. Something is definitely messed up.
my costco had 2 more new units yesterday. not sure if i want to exchange this unit or just get a refund...

Reminds me of back when we had smoking, Saturday afternoon was "bring the biggest cigar and smoke it while sitting on a bar stool day". When I would go home the wife would just point to the shower. :p :) :p

How good are the black levels on this TV? Does it do night scenes and dark scenes well? Also I get the impression from reading the specs that the 62HM196, and its Costco twin the 116 don't accept 1080P as an input. Of course for the moment only the Blu Ray players output 1080P so probably not a big deal. The other thing that concerns me here is Toshiba seems to have a lot of unhappy owners with blown lamps and other problems. Strangely Consumer Reports latest survey of readers said Toshiba was the MOST RELIABLE brand of micro-display tv! That may have been taken before the bulb issues started though. I gather that the previous models were not nearly so prone to bulb issues. At least you have the comfort of knowing Costco will take the TV back about anytime if it proves to be a lemon.

stp24core 08-23-06, 08:10 PM I've had my 62HM195 for about 8 months now. Im now getting a bunch of vertical black lines and bars (go from the top to the bottom of the screen) that start from the center of the screen and continue left to the end. These bars arent present when the TV powers on but slowly take over after 5-10 minutes as the TV warms up. They at first will flicker and then become solid.
Anyone else have this problem? Im wondering what could be causing this. I noticed that Toshiba is offering an extension on the lamp replacement for an additional year on my model and serial number because of lack of performance. The problem is that the picture itself it bright but the solid black bars block a good portion of the left side of the screen. This leads me to believe that it isnt the lamp.
The bars become apparent on all input screens and overlap all menu displays as well. Sorry for the long post but am desparate for help. Hopefully the warranty covers this for it is still within one year of the purchase date.
Thank You In Advance

This really could be caused by many things.... I had something similar on my previous DLP and it turned out to be the DMD board that was the problem.....
So I would call Toshiba right away.... you are under warranty.... it should not be a problem.... just a pain..... you will probably end up with a new light engine....

Buying at Costco lets you return it anytime for a full refund too...in the event it's a lemon. And with Toshiba that is looking all too likely. A salesman at Fry's told me they call Toshiba 'the boomerang tv". They go out the door, and usually are returned because of problems. The only inopertive tv on display at Fry's was guess what...a Toshiba with yet another blown lamp...ugh.
GoreRanger 08-25-06, 09:53 PM I have a 62HM195 and have noticed when I am viewing full screen movies (or those taken from TV) that they are stretched to fill the screen. I cannot get them to show normal (with black bars on each side) so that they are not stretched. No matter what setting I try with the picture these movies remain stretched. I have turned auto aspect on and off (on is my default) and it makes no difference. Anyone know how to correct this? Thanks.
Traveler62 08-25-06, 09:58 PM I have a 62HM195 and have noticed when I am viewing full screen movies (or those taken from TV) that they are stretched to fill the screen. I have turned auto aspect on and off (on is my default) and it makes no difference. Anyone know how to correct this? Thanks.
Push the "Pic Size" button on the remote and make sure you are in Natural (0) mode. If you are using something like a cable box or Satellite, there could be a setting on that box that could be causing this also.
gore: do you use a cable box.. if so double check the box settings . iin SA8300HS boxes at least you can set preferred stretch/normal mode
mikeford 08-26-06, 06:20 PM How long are the replacement bulbs lasting in the 95/195 series?
If it really fixed the problem than a 62hm195 is at the top of my list.
I also like the stand we have now in oak, 17x17x29, any idea if that is big enough?

I saw the new 62hm196 at HH Gregg yesterday. Pretty impressive PQ. It held it's own very nicely against a Samsung HLS87 and a new Sony A-2000 SXRD. I would be hard pressed to call any of them superior to the others overall. I too wonder about bulb life/reliablity on the newer builds.
CarolAVS 08-27-06, 09:30 AM The first bulb on our 95 lasted 3 1/2 months; the second, which is the same type as the first, has lasted 8 months so far. The only difference is we put a power conditioner inline and placed a small fan behind the tv, which we run most of the time. We haven't had to use the new improved ? lamp sent by Toshiba for free.
About to purchase a 72HM195. But can't decide if I should also purchase the matching stand. Like to hear what others think of the stand. It is St7285.
epsilon 08-27-06, 10:13 PM Just picked up a 62HM116(196) from Costco today. I should preface this by saying that my previous set was a 55" 6-year old Mits RPTV, professionally calibrated and up kept by yours truly. My 1080i sources are a Dish 622ViP, Motorola DCT6422, IOData AVLP2, Xbox360 and Oppo 970, all via component until I pick up some HDMI cables (at which point a Denon 3806 will enter into the mix). So far, having only looked at Dish and local (via cable from the wall, not the DCT) HD channels, I'm disappointed. Other than the colors, black and white (first thing I turned down on all inputs from a glaring 100%) levels being off, I'm not happy with a blurriness and blockiness I experience during movement. I must admit, clarity is impressive when things are fairly still.
I realize that I need to pick up DVE (any other suggestions?), because my Avia disk is not useful for digital sets. I'll also have to search through this thread and figure out how to get in the system menu. I saw in passing that R/G/B are adjustable.
How much work (and research) will be necessary for this TV to come near the performance of my Mits CRT? Is it even possible? Is there a concise thread or web page where such issues are discussed? At this point, I'm afraid that, if/when I get around to fixing the old Mits, the Toshiba may be going back to Costco.
Apologies for rambling on and hope to learn something about DLP displays in general and the HM/MX TVs in particular, having been away from the display forums from several years.
John
PS. The Toshiba stand included in the Costco price is pretty sturdy and ergonomic.
DanzBorin 08-28-06, 09:00 AM Well, after 10 months we finally lost our first bulb... :(
i noticed a little flickering on startup over the last few weeks, and it seems like it's been getting dimmer (hard to tell since it gradually dims over time)... haven't been able to contact toshiba yet as they aren't open on the weekend...
man, not having your living room TV sucks... lol
PS this is on a 52hm94...

this is not the TV... it's the dish... sorry to break it to you, but dish compresses their signal heavily and its showing... on movies it's not so bad because they were most likely shot at 24fps, but sports and such that were shot at 30fps or more will look like that on dish... it's one of the drawbacks to the format... and standard def is pretty unwatchable on a big set...
Anyone have an opinion on the Toshiba stand ST7285. It is the stand for the 72HM195. I am purchasing the TV today and anything on the stand would be very appreciated!

I have the 62HM195 with the stand. I am not sure if the general size of the 72 stand is the same, but I can say I am happy with the stand. The only minor issue is that the depth of the stand when you use some components is limited. Maybe someone can measure the depth and let you know. There is a center support in the back and keeps me from being able to completely recess some of my bigger components. The 72 stand may have a bit more room.
mikeford 08-28-06, 11:50 AM What size stand does the 62HM195 need?
I wonder if part of the problem with the original bulbs could be contamination to the outside creating a hot spot, maybe during install or something?
The bulb doesn't seem that much of an issue right now, first one may blow, but maybe it isn't a long term problem.

I am aware of Dish compression, but this was happening even on Discovery HD and HDNet which are not squeezed nor bit-srtarved, and also on Comcast cable, which is fairly good around here. Perhaps compression artifacts are more revealed by this TV but I was hoping it'd do a better job of smoothing them out.
Played some more late into the night and I've grown to like the TV more. Without a calibration disk, my current settings (for the input most of the HD sources are coming in) are:
Wht: 45
Blk: 50
Colr: 37-41 - trying to keep it low to ease red push
tint: -1-0 - haven't played much with tint
dynamic contrast: off
dnr: auto
mpeg noise reduction: mid
color: warm
lamp: low
I started adjusting pic settings from the movie mode base, because I thought that looked closest to accurate. I wonder what internal settings those modes are using (other than the visible ones).
AlanBuck 08-28-06, 01:30 PM Is the 116 model at Costco totally indentical to the 196? The 196 advertises Extreme Black black-level aperature control. That feature is not listed on the outside of the 116 box. Can anyone verify that the 116 has this feature for sure? If the 116 is identical to the 196 it looks to be a good deal. I have seen last years 62 inch 195's on close out for 2 grand without a stand though...wow!

inhd is the best hd on cable here in houston... hdnet constantly has mb problems and you get a lot of screen door action... almost zero on inhd... discovery is kind of middle of the road...
the networks are the worst due to simulcasting...

It's a ruthlessly revealing set and any defect in the source is very visible. I have the 196 and a buddy who's a DP was over and was blown away that he could tell which lenses were used in various scenes.

I've come to the same conclusion. I think I can live with it, as long as I can figure out how to fix the red push and adjust grayscale.
Another nice thing about these fixed pixel displays is that I don't have an overscan problem such as found in my old CRT RPTV.

I guess the main question is how well does the 116 do blacks? I saw the 196 at HH Gregg and it seemed to them quite well..in fact about SXRD well.
GoreRanger 08-29-06, 02:19 AM Looks like I am a victim of early lamp failure. I have a 62hm195 that I purchased in Feb 2006. Bulb just blew tonight so it lasted about 7 months. I'll call tomorrow for a replacement. However, I'm wondering how to reset the bulb hours after I install the new one? Or does it happen automatically when I install the new bulb and turn the system back on? That lamp sure didn't last that long. I can't imagine that Toshiba expects customers to replace their lamps yearly.

If it looks as good as the 196 I saw at HH Gregg yesterday I may be loading one up before the week is over! The 196 was holding its own against a Sammy 87 series, and an A-2000 SXRD. With Costco's unlimited return policy it looks like a safe gamble. I can try it for months, and still return it if not happy. In fact I can return it 2 years later, and get all my money back! I was talking to them at Costco about that, and I said I would feel bad bringing something that old back. They said I absolutely can bring it back, and no need to feel bad about it..that is their policy. They figure I would probably at least buy another TV from them if I returned an older one..hmmm. Still seems overly generous to me. Of course they don't even offer an extended warranty, so I guess it's partly their fault they get so many tv's back after they are a year old.
BMELVIN 08-29-06, 09:54 AM Has anybody been able to compare the PQ between the 195 and the new 196 series? I can get a super deal on a 72HM195 but for about $700 more I would go with the 72HM196 set if there is an improvement in the PQ especially for the analog channels

Someplace on this thread or elsewhere I read one calibrator's opinion that there is not a huge improvement in PQ on the 196 vs the 195. As for analog channels, all of these large digital sets are going to look pretty grim, compared to what it would look like on a much smaller tube type tv.

I have the 72HM195 with the matching stand. It matches great with the TV, aesthetically and functionally. The bottom of the TV has some notches that fit right over some tabs on the top of the stand for a stable fit. I periodically have to move the TV to get behind it, and I can easily slide the stand over my berber carpet w/o fear of tipping the TV over.
I don't use the shelves to hold much as I already have my a/v gear in a separate cabinet. The middle glass shelf is good for holding my center channel speaker, so I didn't have to buy a new stand to put it on top of the TV, and I just have an Xbox 360 on the bottom shelf. The back of the stand in the middle does have a rubber slit for routing cables and such for a neater appearance.
Overall I highly recommend the matching stand.

There's a very large difference between the 95 and 96.
BMELVIN 08-29-06, 01:09 PM There's a very large difference between the 95 and 96.
Can you explain what the exact difference is? I know on the stat sheet there is a difference in the video processing, (the 196 set is to have the 12bit processor) but can you really see the PQ difference in person? I am ready to purchase the 72HM195 set for about 600.00 cheaper thatn the 196, but if there really is a difference in the PQ then I will go with the newer 196 set
AlanBuck 08-29-06, 01:10 PM There's a very large difference between the 95 and 96.
What difference do you note? I am being told the Costco 116 model is a HM196. Fingers crossed.<G>. Interested to hear what is better on the 196 vs the 195. HH Gregg carries the 62MX196, and the PQ was very sweet on it yesterday. I think the PQ is the same on the HM and MX models. Can anyone verify that? The MX has a nicer looking all black case though. We could at least hope the 196's have better bulbs that will give a decent service life! I was really thinking about the A-2000 SXRD but the green glob issue scares me. Also I like the new MITS DLP's. The compelling things about the new Toshiba at Costco are:
(1) The overall PQ looks competitive with other 1080P RPTV's.
(2) Costco's price includes the stand, and thus makes the tv plus stand cost anywhere from $700 to $1200 less than the competing tv's with stand would cost.
(3) Costco has unlimited return privleges, so I don't need an extended warranty, nor have to worry about getting a lemon, and dealing with endless service calls. Another $400 savings here.
(4) Total savings buying the Costco Toshiba is then $1100, to $1600 vs other brands like Samsung, MITS, and Sony SXRD. All these TV's are evolving so rapidly, and prices are falling so fast, that it seems foolish to pay max dollar today, when the thing will be outclassed by improved, and cheaper models in 3 years.

They made great progress in processing this year. The blacks are superb by any standard and the definition and detail is quite stunning. I returned a 195 last year as I couldn't live with it but the 196 is a terrific TV and about as good as microdisplays get right now.

Thanks for the input..I was certainly impressed by what I saw at HH Gregg yesterday. It was on a par with the Samsung 87 series, and A-2000 SXRD. I would say the SXRD rendered fine detail just a bit better..but the Toshiba is brighter and costs hundreds less. One other question...the box for these tv's is about 44 inches tall...can I haul the tv a short distance with the box on its side? It won't fit in my truck shell standing upright.

I wouldn't move a precision instrument like that. Better to borrow a van or rent one.

Probably a good idea. I am not sure what the manufacturer says about it. It might not hurt a thing..and then again it might! :)

I did notice perhaps a bit more Silk Screen Effect than I see on some other RPTV's. Anyone care to comment on that?
mikeford 08-30-06, 07:59 PM Out of the box there is lots of variation between all sets, what was said is after calibration the 195 and 196 are close. Within some range you have to figure same model, set to set variation is going to be something.
I just can't see the point in shopping by watching uncalibrated sets in a store display.

You could have gone straight to Toshiba and had them send you a new bulb for free. It would be there in 3 to 4 days usually. The replacement is very easy. If Conns does not bring one with them, you could be without a TV for awhile.
Bill97Z 08-31-06, 03:31 PM I finally ordered digital cable service for my 52HM95 and had the tech from the cable company install the cable card. It would not load the channel database, and just hung up so I called toshiba technical service, and they rushed me out a firmware update. I installed the update, and now the TV is working great, with the cable card, and also the TV guide feature works!
I love the picture in 720p and 1080i. Some channels almost look like 3D. I am very satisfied and glad that the TV guide feature still works with the cable card. Also toshiba customer service was very prompt, and informative. I even got a followup call to make sure all was working ok.
toenail 08-31-06, 04:31 PM I've noticed that quite a few people are looking for the Service Manuals to help them tweak their TVs. As an owner of a 52HM94, I recently purchased a PDF of the Service Manual. While the manual does provide instructions for entering the Service Mode (also found numerous times in this thread), the default settings for each setting therein (which can be recorded upon Service Mode entry), and the description for each cryptic setting name, that's it. There are no instructions on how the changes will affect the settings, the upper and lower limits, etc. Of the 177 pages in the manual, about 140 contained schematics. I imagine that unless you were a TV technician, these manuals are near worthless to even the bravest of videophiles. My 2 cents, hoping to help keep others from wasting their money on Service Manuals for Toshiba TVs. Best to have an ISF tech calibrate your TV for you.
I too have the PDF for this TV and would agree it is next to worthless. The default values listed for each SM item in the manual are ballpark starting points and don't even get you close to an accurate image. Write down the originals stored in the SM specific to your serial number or you'll regret it. The HEX values themselves are not to be feared, just realise that raising them changes in one direction, lowering changes in the opposite direction. I did have an ISF tech calibrate my display. It's safe to say that the adjustable items are limited with this set. Proper grayscale is attainable but there are no color decoder, primary or secondary adjustments. In my case the grayscale was enough to warrant the calibration as I can't stand images that are overly cool.
CarolAVS 09-02-06, 07:50 AM I looked at the 95 model in Best Buy, dark room, next to the latest Sony - the Sony's SSE was much more apparent to me. But, these were last years models.

Hello everyone,
I am a new 50HMX96 owner. When I brought the set home today and set it up, I just get a white screen with random, small black dots that looks like a ceiling tile. The set does not respond to any keys on the remote or on the side of the set. I called Toshiba and they told me it's because I have Time Warner cable and the set needs to get a download for the TV Guide IPG before it will work. They told me there are three downloads every 24 hours and I will have to wait 24 hours before I can use my TV, even to watch DVDs. Does this seem right to anyone? Have you had this happen before? I can't believe I have to wait 24 hours to use my new TV!

That sounds like BS to me man, the small black dots/white screen is what 'snow' or no picture looks like on these tvs. Can you hold the power key? Are any lights blinking on the front of the set?
When I hold the power key down, it will shut off. When I turn it back on, same thing. I'd rather just exchange it today rather than wait 24 hours to have the same result and just have to exchange it then...
All LEDs are operating normally.

72MX195MPLS 09-04-06, 12:05 PM Greetings! I own a 72MX195 and have it connected to a Time Warner (soon to be Comcast) Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 HD DVR box. I have the box connected to the HDMI and ColorStream inputs. On occasion I will turn on the unit to find the screen GREEN and the picture cascading horizontally. Over time I've found that the only way around this is to switch the input on the unit from HDMI to ColorStream RGB or vice versa. Sometimes both inputs have the same problem at the same time - this is usually when I curse a blue streak, power the unit off for a while and try later. Sometimes it does it again right away and sometimes it does not. I did some research online after the first couple of times this happened and read someone's review of the unit. He was not happy as he was experiencing my same problem. He said he called Toshiba and they sent out a local TV repair man who had no experience in working with these types of sets and to this day, still has the same issues. Well, I'm hoping not to continue dealing with this over time. This is the most wonderful, crisp, beautiful and impressive set I've ever owned and I wish it worked properly. I'm thinking there must be a firmware update to correct this. Then again, it could be the settings on the converter box or set itself. The technical advisors at Toshiba seem to have just as little knowledge about this as the guy posted. Any advice?? Also, I must say that this forum is wonderful and everyone does a great job! I only wish I had the time to research ALL of my electronics! Have a great day!

The flicker most likely means your lamp may be out soon. Is your picture somewhat darker? If so, have Toshiba send a new bulb. On the fan noise, I have had intermittent noise that I thought was a fan, but now think it is the color wheel. It is also now happening all of the time. One way to know if it is a fan or the color wheel, change the source on the TV and listen for the sound to change. Sometimes the color wheel speed will drop and then go back up, if the noise you are hearing also changes, then it is most likely the color wheel. I have a call into service now and they are sourcing a new Light Engine. Hope there is no wait for the part. Good Luck!

Cable boxes are screwy, try posting same question at the end of this mighty thread, http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=453804
Make sure to include some details, like the area you live in, and firmware level in the cable box, press and hold "select" and "exit" on the cable box until it beeps or sound "changes" (typically about 5 seconds), release, and press them again and a diagnostic information screen will come up that you can scroll through with the remote buttons. My firmware is 2.5.066, but I don't use hdmi yet, and it loves to behave funny.
Check that your on the same page with your hook-up. On the remote:INPUT (next to the "o") hit it and make sure it jives with how you are set up. The TV didn't respond to any commands, via remote or the buttons on the side; just the same white screen no matter what. I just took it back and got another one and it works great; no issues at all, except I appear to be a "rainbow sufferer" but my wife can't see them so that bumps up the WAF, at least!
stevenkapoor 09-06-06, 10:48 AM Hi,
My lamp got ruptered and I ordered a replacement from TCS. I also found out that my nearest Toshiba service center has one in stock. If I go take it, will toshiba charge me for the extra lamp? Any one had this experience?
Thanks in advance
LR6AGB001 09-07-06, 02:15 AM Well my lamp died out just a week ago for the 2nd time already (52HMX84). The lamp was replaced on Jan of this year so the tech suggested to not only replace the lamp but the ballast as well. The parts came in from Toshiba to the service center and they happily rang me up to see if I was available today for the repair. Not only was it replaced successfully but the DLP is brighter and more vivid than ever before. I had calibrated my set in the past so no changes were made there and as always it's set to low lamp mode. It definitely was a good idea to purchase the extended warranty from service net, saved my neck twice at no additional charge. :)
Call of Duty 2 on the 360 never looked better. :D
skepticon 09-08-06, 11:33 AM I don't think you can adjust the overscan on these Toshiba DLPs. Via the service mode menu, you can only move the image around vertically and horizontally. Search this thread for how to enter the service mode, but be forewarned, you can damage the set permanently if you attempt to try this yourself.
Is there anyone that can elaborate on this? Specifically, how to move the image horizontally? I'm hooked into my HTPC via DVI-HDMI, and the display is offset slightly to left. I would be thrilled if there was a way to center it. Anyone know which settings need to be changed in the service menu?
epsilon 09-08-06, 11:45 AM Are the service menu settings documented anywhere? Perhaps the service manual?
BTW, I don't see an obvious way from the tacp site to order service manuals. Can someone post a link please?

There are HPOS and VPOS adjustments in the service menu for centering image. Using 720p input seems to provide the least amount of overscan on my set.

That's great news. Now my only regret with this set is not checking out the service menu a year ago to take care of this. I had figured that the screen position was "mechanically" tied to the optics (as is the geometry), and there were no adjustments for this.

I just noticed slight overscan when using inputs 4 & 5. Those are usually for gaming like my 360 & GCN, any idea as to where I can get a set of instructions to fix this error. HDMI inputs are fine, DVD & PC use for those two and no complaints on that. Appreciate any feedback.
I have a 52HM95 and my bulb just blew today. I checked when I bought it and it was 8-28-05 and today is 9-10-06, 12 days out of warranty. Will toshiba replace it for free? If not, is there any way to talk them into it? Also any cheap places to buy bulbs? Thanks!

LR6AGB001 09-12-06, 12:12 PM I suppose my post was a bit too general to get any feedback at all but here is what I posted in the gaming section on the forums here...
I had my 360 for awhile now and I just thought Sega/Visual Concepts screwed up on a launch title like NBA2K6 but there is some serious overscan on my DLP. I realized this after looking through the booklet included with COD2 and said to myself, my display looks different than ones shown here. The model is a Toshiba 52HMX84. I used this image pattern which are both available in 720p & 1080i but since the native resolution is 720p then I didn't bother with any other resolution. Overscan is seen on both HD settings and I was wondering if there are any set of instructions fellow members can share to fix this setting. Hopefully this can be adjusted in the service menu but if it's a bit too complicated then I'll look towards a professional who might be able to help.

Now here are my results, the area inside the red border shows what is not visible. I double checked time and time again and it's more or less the same situation when running in 1080i.

I'm familiar with the service menu for this set. It does not have any options for adjusting overscan. You can re-center the image by moving it horizontally or vertically but the amount of overscan will not change.
are there any options for REFLASHING after a failed update?
I have a 62HMX95. My digital tuner went dark but the other video sources (analog, hdmi, component) are all fine. I called service and after the technican pulled out the lamp and reseated it again, the digital tuner came back alive. He claimed that the reseating forced a restart and that made the tuner to work. He claimed that you can do the same thing by unplugging the power. When the digital tuner failed again a couple of weeks later, I tried the unplugging and it did not work, but reseating the lamp did bring back the digital tuner. I don't understand this at all and maybe some one can explain this. Does any else have that problem?

I was having the same problem with my digital tuner. I was having to unplug the set to reset it. I had a service guy come look at it and he called Toshiba and they told hime to replace the tuner. Then when it came time to replace it a different guy came out and he said that Toshiba does not have fix for it. He went ahead and replaced the tuner since he was here. So I guess we shall see if it fixes the problem.
Illini Fan 09-13-06, 01:27 PM I just bought the 50HM66 after having to return a new Sony Wega 50" LCD due to technical problems with some of their inputs. I have to say that I am very disappointed in the Toshibas pic quality. My prior tv was an older 43" HD Toshiba Theaterwide and its pic quality beats that of the new DLP. I will be returning this unit before my 30 days are up at Best Buy unless some officianados can give me some hints as to how to make the pic better. I am going to try another Sony Wega LCD hoping it was just a fluke about the inputs because the quality of the pic was night and day difference.

Seems odd. I have a 56HM66 and I love the picture. My old set is a 30" sony crt hdtv and I still don't find the picture lacking. could lightning have struck twice?
Here is how mine is setup for HD broadcasts (lamp in low power mode):
Contrast: 39
Brightness: 66
Color: 36
Tint: 40
Turn all picture enhancement circuits to "off" such as mpeg noise reduction and auto contrast or whatever they are called. They don't make an improvement to picture quality at all. Try these settings in high power mode if you have a lot of ambient light in the room.
If you are looking at the picture out of the box it is terrible. This is true of most rear projection models, especially lately.

I have a 72MX195 and have had this problem a couple of times. I think it is likely some sort of built in safety feature. Unplugging my set does not work, but resetting it to the factory defaults in the menu does...
Hope you have this option...
I've wondered if the newest firmware addresses this at all...

I'm not aware of what the process is, but it might be helpful to have more details such as what exactly happened, and what level of functionality does the set currently have?
Have you called Toshiba CS and asked them?
sparrow_69 09-14-06, 10:01 AM A local shop has the older 52hmx85 for a very attractive price (2000CAD). I really like the styling of the hmx series vs the new models. Is it worth going for the older model considering the 50hm66 can be had for less (1800CAD) and is newer?
I have to admit that the older line is much sleaker than the new models...

No joke. If you're using for HTPC you can alter resolution settings on the output side of things to bring edges of viewable material in to acceptable levels. Barring some form of physical adjustment of the light engine to bring it closer to the mirror I'm not sure how else you'd bring in the edges of the image. Not sure I'd want to go that route though.
LR6AGB001 09-16-06, 05:03 AM Contacted Microsoft just last night to see if there was anything that could be done about the issue or to see if they were at least aware of it. So I explained the issue to the rep and he said it's a graphical error with the 360 console and they'll exchange it. Now I just find it strange that only on games, be it Xbox Live Arcade or original 360 games, overscan exists. When viewing HD trailers on the 360, they are fine and no overscan is visible whatsoever. Any ideas or thoughts, is it really my set or the 360? Reason I ask it because it took me 3 Xbox 360 consoles to get one that works, if I'm wasting my time then I won't bother exchanging my current system. :(

Its not what it looks like outside as much as whats inside that counts to me at least. Sure you want an attractive box surrounding your picture but in the end its the picture youre looking at not the outside. ;)

It seems to me that any overscan issue is a problem with the input, not the TV. Since these TVs are digital with each pixel mapped to a screen location, whatever is being projected at a given pixel is based on the input video signal being processed. There is no "scanning" on these TVs like CRTs so the picture is not painted in a way that can result in overscan.
Somehow the input signal is being delivered through the digital interface of the TV with this error IMHO.

The overscan on these set comes from the image being projected slightly larger than the screen... thus hiding the edges of the picture.... on my 56HM195 I have about 2.5% overscan....

LR6AGB001 09-16-06, 03:16 PM Here is my overscan, it supports Don's statement. :(
Anything inside the red borders is cut out of the screen. Happens only on games and not HD trailers on the 360 which is puzzling.

The hiding of the edges is a result of the image being presented to the DMD is formatted that way, not because the DMD is projecting part of the image beyond the visible area of the screen. DMDs do not work that way.
Each DMD mirror projects to the same spot on the screen regardless of the input. If you tune to an HD program (16:9 aspect) like MLB on ESPN-HD you will see all of the picture including the info scrolling on the bottom of the screen. I'll assume your picture is not cut off in any way.
Now on the other input with the cropped image, the same 1080 x 1920 pixels are being displayed on the screen - it's the input image that's being presented to the DMD cropped. The geometry of the light engine and screen never change and are not adjustable because there's no need to.
If the image is being cropped, then I would look to the input not conforming somehow to the expected resolution resulting in the cropping of it.
I purchased a Toshiba 62HM15A at Costco in the spring. I ran into the bulb problem and returned it in early August. I purchased another 62HM15A, but this one was made in March after the bulb problem was reportedly fixed. The TV works fine, but I am a bit nervous about it. I checked with Costco and they told me if I was not satisfied i could return it without a problem. Costco now has the 62HM116 model which is a 1080P model as opposed to the 720 that I have. The hitch is that it is an additional $800. I have been playing Hamlet for the past week trying to decide if the newer model is worth the additional swag. I do plan to get an HD-DVD player in the coming months. We watch the TV from a distance of about 14 feet. How much of a difference will we see with the brighter bulb and the higher resolution? Do you think it's worth the extra $800? I am currently leaning in favor, but I am something less than sold.
Note: The 62HM116 is the only 1080 HDTV available at Costco and because of their great return policy I would not buy a TV anywhere else.

The 116 which is the same as the 196 is a huge upgrade.
Th3DudeAbides 09-18-06, 06:57 PM I am a newb in the land of HDTV's. However, a friend of mine pointed me in the direction of the 62HM195. I have found some ridiculously good prices for this unit from online retailers.
I have a few questions though. I've been reading the threads about the Toshiba HM models and a lot have similar themes.
1. First it seems that although this TV is advertised as 1080P, but it doesn't accept 1080P signal. Can someone explain?
2. Also I see frequent mention of calibrating the picture. What does this entail? Can I do it myself?
3. Extended warranties. What would be considered good for one of these? Should I even pursue one with the speed technologies advance and prices drop?
4. Any reason not to buy this model?
Thanks!
1) the set takes any incoming 1080 signal, and simply deinterlaces it to 1080p, so the image is the samea s if it received 1080p
2) using any THX released dvd, one can adjust their set to match a fixed set of parameters, ensuring the best picture
3)not a bad idea on bulb driven-big ticket items, IMO
4)nope
Thanks, Zissou. I assume that by huge you mean that it is worth the $800.
Will I see any difference in the resolution from 14 feet away?
gshelley61 09-19-06, 05:17 PM It isn't just about resolution. The 1080p models also have better black levels.
ragtop262 09-20-06, 09:58 AM Dismiss my posts, it's a problem with my HDTV. Just ran some test samples from a few DVD calibrators and all have the same effect. An image slightly shifted more so towards the right, top and bottom cut off slightly. Now I'm filled with regret, next time I purchase a set I'll bring some test samples. :(
If it is a problem with the set - its most likely a defect with your specific unit, not with the model in general. Unfortunately, bringing sample materials to view before buying wouldn't have helped (unless you bought the floor model).
If it's a big issue for you, I would call Toshiba and tell them the set is not performing in accordance with the advertised specifications and they need to either fix it or replace it.
I am a newb in the land of HDTV's. However, a friend of mine pointed me in the direction of the 62HM195. I have found some ridiculously good prices for this unit from online retailers.

after doing a lot of research on the Toshiba's I did not purchase a 195 series due to all the bulb problems (since corrected) thus for just over $2K I bought a 62MX196 which is a much better unit then the 195's.

If you flip and read through this thread, you'll find many if not all of these Toshiba DLPs are the cause of overscan. I even called up a local ISF calibrator and asked if this can be corrected and his reply like many here was no. If it was correctable then I would've simply paid the $200-$400 for proper calibration, I had a check written out at the time. Because this was my first HD DLP set, I made sure to save a few images on a CDR & flash disk so as to be sure that while I'm shopping around that these sets properly work.
As for calling Toshiba, they just put me through with a repair center. They haven't a clue as to what I was talking about regarding overscan. How does one explain overscan to someone without a clue?
I have a question re: the "system status - system information" of my 62HM196. When I select it, it says 72HM196! I don't believe this causes any 'problems' with my TV but does anyone else with this set see that as their TV Information?
epsilon 09-20-06, 05:20 PM That's funny; my 62HM116 reports 62HM196 (as does everyone else's I know of).
BTW, anyone have software later than this:
v2.2.55.0

All these sets have some overscan..... and believe it or not some overscan is good... it is expected and it hides all sorts of crap that that may be at the edges of the picture...
Before anyone flames me about how DLPs work and 1 to 1 pixel mapping I suggest that they test their Toshiba DLP with DVE.... go to Title 12, chapter 17 - overscan test pattern.... I think everyone will find that there is some overscan on these sets.... and I think most people will find that the image is not perfectly centered either....

Traveler62 09-21-06, 12:40 AM I had my light engine replaced about a week ago on my 62HM195 and noticed with the new light engine that the test pattern is centered about 3/8" to the left and also the pattern is just a bit high. The service guy was great and said he would try to find me the instructions on how to shift the image. I am out of the country, but my wife said a package arrived from the company that hopefully has these instructions. I also took some pictures of the LE that I can post when I get home.
My thoughts are that the overscan is related to the distance of the LE from the reflector and screen. I did not see any way to change this. I know there needs to be some overscan. I would figure that the horizontal and verticle position can be changed digitally by shifting the image to the next set of mirrors, as long as you do not run past the edge of the DLP chip. I think there are HPOS and VPOS settings in the service mode that can be changed.
Hope to know more when I get home :p
cbell2112 09-21-06, 08:51 AM Wanted to give a quick report that my 52HM84's bulb went out after 20 months of moderate usage. Went out Thursday afternoon and had my new bulb from Sears extended warranty service Tuesday evening which is not a bad turnaround. Sears quoted a new bulb at $199, obviously mine was replaced for free. Paid about $500 for the 5 year extended warranty. I will say that the warranty department at Sears could use a little work as far as being able to provide order and shipping information.
Other than that I have been very pleased with this set over the last 2 years and would recommend it to anyone.
Cheers!
spacejamz 09-21-06, 10:46 AM I purchased a Toshiba 62HM15A at Costco in the spring.
Stopped by Costco last night and the 62HM116 is now $300 cheaper than when I bought it a few weeks ago...time for a price adjustment... :)

I have a 52HM95 I bought the unit about 4 months ago. I had some blue streaking or blurring about 2 months ago where certain colors on the screen would smear blue to the right. Very Very annoying!!  I called Toshiba's tech line and someone walked me through a service menu and had me do some type of reset (I guess...) This blue streaking issue just arrose again today  I called Toshiba again and because I called earlier with the same problem they did not want to help me and only wanted to refer me to a Repair center... I told them this was 4 months old and $$. All I could get out of them was to unplug for 3 mins and try that. Well didn't work.... Looking for advice from anyone who can offer.... Thanks -Brian

Also , PLEASE PLEASE!! i need a used working or non working light engine chassis just for the optics bed. It can be a close sister model. My TV got flooded and insurance wont cover, optics got water in them. everything else is repaired but i cant see paying for a complete engine when all i want is the optics. I've tried to disassemble them and broke a lens.

The VPOS and HPOS items in the service menu adjust the image vertically and horizontally. Unless your LE or mirror has shifted significantly you should be able to center the image perfectly using Avia, DVE or one of the HD network patterns. Be VERY cautious about writing down original values. Don't change things you don't recognize etc.
Add- I just noticed that the SM posted above offers VPOS and HPOS 56pt convergence adjustment. This may differ from just HPOS and VPOS. Looks like left overs from previous CRT RPTV. My unit, the 52HM94 does not have these convergence items, only the regular HPOS and VPOS and they do exactly what they should.

oregoncalfroper 09-21-06, 05:53 PM Ok got my new 62hm195 home yesterday and hooked it up... great picture goes quite well with stand 3 hours into watching one side of screen from exactly the middle to the left goes completely dark as if it is turned off while the other side is perfect.
Now I thought at first maybe it was a split screen thing but in split screen everythigng bunches up to the 1 side not on this you just can't see left side of screen called toshiba warranty and they had me reset it unplugged for 3 minutes ... all better
This morning after 1 1/2 hours it did the same thing when i was trying to do picture and picture and such i looked away looked back and it was black on left side again called toshiba local tech will be out on tuesday.
They said I can keep resetting it as needed and they don't know what it is ... The lady was nice but tried to tell me it might be a bug going across lamp.. LOL
Any ideas on this would be great

If that means it's $300 cheaper here in Jersy that is a deal maker. I can put the other $300 toward an HD-DVD player. It looks like I may be able to have my cake and eat it too!:D

Theogenes 09-22-06, 02:35 PM Does anyone know where to find service manuals for the 52HM95? I am a HD noob and have done the basic calibrations afforded by the Avia disc, but I'm pretty uncertain about how to proceed beyond that. I want to get the best possible picture without managing to cause my set to go Chernobyl on me, which seems to usually be my effect on expensive electronics. Any links to service manuals would be greatly appreciated!
ragtop262 09-22-06, 02:38 PM yea, i noticed that is was just a bit off center with a test, is this bad?
That depends on what kind of "user" you are.
If you're a hard core videophile that insists on technical perfection (and there's nothing wrong with that) - then its probably bad.
But, if you just want to watch TV on a nice HD set - it probably won't make much difference. The average person doesn't spend much time watching test patterns on their TV, so if that's the only time you notice it - who cares?
Personally, I'm mainly concerned with having a sharp picture with accurate color reproduction - and my 46HM95 gives me that. The picture might be a half inch off center from where its supposed to be, but there's no way I can tell while I'm watching the beads of sweat roll down the coach's face as his kicker lines up the game winning field goal ;)

I totally agree... if you do not notice the problem when watching TV or movies then you don't really have a problem.... Then again I am a bit of a hard core videophile that insists on technical perfection..... and it does bother me.... but only when I think of it....

I have a 46Hm95..I was thinking about the following a few days back. My light engine needs to be replaced. It failed before the one year warranty expired. If it failed now, what's preventing it from failing again next year when my warranty will be expired. I'm just curious. how much would it cost to replace the light engine for out of warranty Televisions? I have to say, owning this television is making me nervous. I'm begining to think I'll have to pay alot servicing this TV in the years to come.

Hello,
I have a 52HM85, and I would like to know if there is a way to make the picture darker. There seems to be a lot of light coming off the screen when in video black mode. Dark scenes seem washed out.
I have the set in low lamp mode. Even when I turn it off in quick restart mode, there seems to be a lot of light - I understand the light bulb is not turned off, however, I thought that in dark scenes the DMD angles the reflected light into a "shadow box".
Some Programs also seem to be washed out.
Is this normal, or is there a setting(s) in the service mode that I can adjust to bring the black levels down? What might the "center" adjustment be from the factory - perhaps someone "monkeyed" with this set.
Thanks for the help.
Regards, Tamas
RickGr4 09-23-06, 02:23 PM Hey gang,
I am new to this thread. I just bought a 50HMX96 but I won't be able to set it up for a day or two. I have a few questions for you.
1. Is the "Game" mode input specific. The owners manual does not clearly say.
2. How visible is Game mode? My kids will be playing a ton of X-Box 360 on this thing.
3. How long does it take from hitting the power button on the remote until the bulb turns on?
4. Do you need to wait until the bulb turns on before the TV will accept input from the remote, or does it accept commands right away? I need to know how much delay to put in my Harmony.
TIA.

I have a 52HM94, and I just recently noticed a small black spot on the screen. Upon closer examination, it is clear that this is some sort of bug that got into the unit and died. I suppose that it is on the lamp or something. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, is it something that I can fix myself? How do I access the inside of the unit to look for the culprit? I'm out of warranty and would hate to pay someone a couple of hundred dollars for something that would probably take less than thirty minutes to fix.
Thanks for any replies.

I was getting firmware updates to fix issues with the cablecard and TV Guide On Screen. I have a 52HMX94 which is pretty much the same TV. That's all I know that it fixed but there are probably more issues that the updates fixed. I'm up to version 1.6.3 I believe.
I don't know about hooking your PC up to the firewire ports, sorry.

According to Toshiba, it will increase life expectancy by about 30%, (you'll find that in your owners manual somewhere). It seems to make sense that the lamp will last longer if it operates at a lower intensity - but Im not sure there's any real-world data to back that up.

Actually, I think it was around March 1 of 2006 that the improved lamps started shipping.
sparrow_69 09-26-06, 12:14 PM Are the improved lamps actually better than the old ones? I've heard that they were just as bad, with people getting <1000hrs on them..

instead of the d95 lamp which caused all the crap.

Goldfingiz 09-26-06, 07:07 PM Hey guys, just thought i'd chime in again. My 46HM95 still has that oily screen effect. Looks like a bunch of tiny different colored (mostly pink/green) dots all over the screen.

Thanks!

Do new lamps still have the blue dot on the box? Trying to determine if a lamp manuf. in may is a "new and improved" or not (from ebay)Mfg. date of May,'06 would definitely be a new lamp. The blue dot was an internal routing alert and never had a thing to do with the designation of a design change. This from very high in the lamp camp.

sparrow_69 09-27-06, 02:05 PM Since you seem to be in the know about Toshiba bulbs, I figured you would be a good person to ask. I am about to receive a 52hmx85 that was purchased for me as a gift. I do not yet know if the bulb is covered under the extra year warranty.
What I do know is that spare bulbs cost ~400CAD from toshiba, but can be had for half that on ebay. I've already purchased one as a spare from a very reputable seller. Is it worth purchasing a few more? Do they have a shelf life? I'm just worried about the d95-lmp not being widely available down the road and having to pay 400$ (which is completely ridiculous) for a bulb. What do you think?
