Most likely to 62HM196. stp24core 11-22-06, 04:54 PM The 62MX196 would be a sufficient upgrade in my opinion. Is there any major differences between the two other than having extra media options? If it does turn out to be the 62hm196...isnt that an identical TV for the most part? I havent heard of any differences. i2k 11-23-06, 08:39 AM TCS suck you should consider it lucky to even get a replacement TV within 60 days, let alone a stand! geonex88 11-23-06, 10:05 AM Quick Question: On my 72HM195, when I turn on the TV I occasionally get a pink screen that scrolls to the left. Furthermore, the picture is sectioned into 4 parts and completely in the wrong spots. I have to turn the TV on and off, sometimes more than once, to make this problem go away. i took a picture of this, keep in mind the entire screen scrolls to the left side when this happens. Any ideas on where to start with getting this fixed? since this is occasional, i don't know if the service center near me will be able to reproduce this problem. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y58/geonex88/tvissue.jpg gshelley61 11-23-06, 10:24 AM You need to get hold of Toshiba and have a service tech come out to look at it. Even if it can't be reproduced during the visit, there will be a service record about the issue should it persist, or the set develops more serious problems. Get on their radar. I've had good experiences with TCS on two other Toshiba consumer electronics products that needed service (not a big screen TV, though) piturra 11-23-06, 01:15 PM 1. What would be the next upgrade for a 62hm195? Since you have an 62HM195, your upgrade would be the 2006 equivalent model = 62HM196. If you bought an xxMX195, then another xxMX196 would be the equivalent upgrade. I went from a 56HM195 to 62HM196 ;) ... since Toshiba no longer makes a 56" 1080p for 2006. 2. If the same set is available, will they allow you to pay an upgrade fee (I've read plenty of horror stories about this TV and dont want the same problem in the future.)? Don't know, since they didn't have any 56HM195's, the thought never occured to me. 3. Would they consider giving you a discount on a stand for the missing time for the lack of television and 2 months of paying a satellite bill? You can negotiate with them, but getting a 2006 HDTV for a 2005 RIP 62HM195 is more than generous under their 1-year warranty obligation. Took delivery Jan '06. great TV, HD is awesome! SD is less impressive. May '05 first lamp failure. Was standing next to tv when it blew. Was expecting it to go because picture brightness was quickly diminishing the day before. Quick response by TACP, replaced tv w/ new lamp w/in a week. 3 weeks ago, lost picture, though no pop from lamp. Went thru t-s procedures and still no picture. Owners manual says "needs lamp replacement". TACP quickly sent new lamp to replace, installed, still no picture, sound okay. A week later, service tech comes out and determines it's the ballast. Well the ballast I was told Service company was part of the light engine. The Area Field Rep responded to the service company that the Light engine is on BO w/ no ETA. "Have customer contact TCS for warranty exchange." That's where I stand now. Awaiting call back from TCS as to what they're going to do for me. I like what I've read from prev post, as far as exchanges/upgrades. /kc stp24core 11-24-06, 09:16 AM Thanks piturra for the detailed comparison. It sounds like a great TV that I would be getting in exchange. Im just hoping that its not going to take too long to get the exchange done. You would think they would be able to speed things up a bit. Im also hoping that the backordered light-engine doesnt become available and they decide to service my existing set. I will keep everyone updated. I am going to ask if they will allow me to pay the difference by going to a MX from the HM and also see if I can negotiate a discount on the stand. I asked if it was possible to pay a fee to upgrade to the 62MX196 and was told that my request was noted in my account and that I would receive a call back by a gentleman named Chris possibly on Monday. Should be interesting. djcsuomi 11-25-06, 06:15 PM Can anyone share their experience of using the 62mx196 as a monitor for their htpc? I've searched this thread and haven't found anything specific to this model. Also, i'm interested in how this television displays jpg's and other picture files (i would like to use the tv like a slide projector). Kellner 11-25-06, 09:57 PM Hey there all. I'm new here. Anyone know if exploding bulbs in the 52HMX95 is a common occurrence? I bought this TV almost 10 months ago and it's not a refurb. The lamp has never been accessed during my ownership (so it hasn't been touched, coated, etc.) so I'm pretty surprised. Also, anyone know how to access the Service Screen for this model? glopes 11-26-06, 04:15 AM Hi, This is my first time on this forum. Fairly new to all of this so please bear with me. I bought a Toshiba DLP TV model 52 hmx85 last November--the look of the picture and of the set itself is gorgeous. However in September i started to notice 2 white circles about 5" side by side in the top right hand corner of the set but only on darker scenes not visible on bright scenes. Called Toshiba who sent a tech out who stated that i needed the light engine replaced. He left and nothing was done. I called recently and asked what was being done to remedy my situation and why i did not receive a call back or anything as my 1 year Manufactures warranty was almost up (week left--still have 4 years with futureshop but do not want to deal with FS). They apologized and said they were going to order a new light engine. The manager calls shortly thereafter and states that he will swtich my set---give me a new 50hmx96 right out of the box. Still to give him an answer--went online to check out the 50hmx96 and it looks very nice but i love the look of the 52hmx85. However i have been going thru the forum and have read that the hmx85 series have had bulb problems (still on my original bulb but only use it mainly on the weekends). Should i go for the 50hmx96 (know nothing about this set) or should i just wait the month or two and get my light engine fixed on my 52hmx85. Thank you in advance for any help provided. rseven 11-26-06, 08:44 AM Welcome to the forum, Glopes. By all means go with the replacement set. The newer sets have numerous refinements and improvements. The blacks are much blacker and the picture quality is noticeably better, not to mention that the new sets do not have a bulb issue. It may take a few days to adjust to the different outward design and a few changes in the remote control, but it will be well worth the hassle. geonex88 11-26-06, 07:00 PM I had this exact issue when I first got my set. Bill Shenefelt 11-26-06, 07:16 PM May not be of any help, but if the lamp unit and the door is not closed really well, the front power light will blink. No picture. I would suggest that you reinsert the lamp unit and play with the door switch doing it, at least that fixed mine. Worth a shot at least. Mine is a 2 year old 62HM94. I have gone thru one lamp but did get about 4K hrs from it. NO problems yet after 9 months on the new lamp. Only issue is with the stupid tv guide resets and a piece of junk called Symbio. stp24core 11-26-06, 09:22 PM Thanks to both of you guys for the replies: My STB is connected via Component, changing inputs does not make this go away. Just to jump in here...I had the exact same thing happen to my TV (62hm195). When I saw the picture that you posted it brought back the memories. I had to change the imput for it to go away but it was the EXACT SAME issue that you are experiencing. I had my set connected with HDMI from DTV to TV. It didnt happen often but it did occur enough times for me recongize your description and pic. glopes 11-26-06, 11:04 PM Thanks rseven. I think i might exchange the set. Checked the Toshiba site and put in my serial and found that the lamp is one of the ones that Toshiba extended the warranty for. It will be hard i just love the design of the 52HMX85. Just out of curiousity what are those 5" side by side circles that appear in the upper right of the set only during dark scenes. I am just worried that even if they change my light engine that the problem will still persist. What if they use a refurbished light engine as well. On the other hand what if I exchange for the 50HMX96 and I run into more severe problems. Well i have to make a decision :) Thanks again rseven. agibson95 11-27-06, 10:56 AM I purchased a 56HM66 from Best Buy last week. Thanks in advanced I also picked up this tv from Best Buy last week for my parents caught the 4 day sale and got it for $1299 what a deal for a 50" DLP. I used some calibration DVD's to do some basic calibration but I would be interested in hearing more on advanced calibration. It seems like when i made the adjustments with the DVD they only hold to that source the settings were defaults still on TV/ANT source. How do most people calibrate with multiple sources? Also my dad likes to use his VCR but of course the VCR cant record a HDTV signal what are most people doing to record their shows with HDTV? I know Tivo/DVR's are out there and HTPC's which is what I use at home. But my parents need a low cost dumbed down easy solution. Is there any other options? Thanks! Dave stp24core 11-27-06, 03:04 PM I received a call from Chris at Toshiba today regarding my request to pay an upgrade fee in order to get the 62mx196 instead of the 62hm196 as a replacement to my 62hm195. He informed me that because Toshiba does not sell their products directly to the consumer he simply did not have a way to bill me for an upgrade. He had very good customer service skills and took his time explaining to me the differences between the 62mx196 and the 62hm196. It was worth the attempt. Anyhow, he said that I would be receiving a call within 10-15 days to schedule the delivery and that once I was called the delivery date is usually the following day. I have to have my broken TV at ground level (first floor) for the pick up and they will be dropping off the new set at ground level as well. Unfortunately I will be going to the 2nd floor with the TV but beggers cant be choosers. I would have to say that I am satisfied with the way Toshiba has been handling everything. Bill Shenefelt 11-27-06, 03:07 PM Toshiba makes a "Symbio" TIVO ish recorder for the TV that has come down in price a lot. I don't like mine. Most troublesome unit I ever owned. The TV Guide is the primary programming method for recording on the Symbio and it is not yet right, at least mine won't hold station settings. I still have to delete non recieved stations every time the stupid thing reloads. Also the symbio sometimes decides it wants to be in record mode and you have to just unplug it to get it out of that mode or you cannot change stations. When recording on the Symbio, you MUST watch the channel you are recording. I could see that you could not tune a different channel but you cant even go to another source to view. Pretty short sighted by Toshiba. Has anyone on the forum found any good results from Symbio? Can't beat the current price but if it is still junk that does not help. mastwo 11-27-06, 09:44 PM Just ordered my 62hm196. :) Now I could use some more help, this time from some of you kind hm196 owners out there. I purchased a 52HMX85 and am now experiencing problems with 2 light circles in the upper screen on dark scenes. Toshiba techs say problems with the light engine. They are willing to switch the HMX85 for the HMX96 since my TV is only 10 months old. I love the HMX85--beautiful TV but I am wondering if the new light engine will correct the problem and also checked the Toshiba website and my serial number indicates a problem with my bulb. So i just wonder if you like the HMX96 and should i make the switch. Thank you. Reginald Trent 11-28-06, 01:10 AM I'm shopping for a bigger television and I need some help. The number of business days when Chris called me (Oct. 23rd) about the 56HM195 > 62HM196 replacement option to delivery (Nov. 9th) = 14 business days (not bad considering it came from Lebanon, TN to California) Chris (Toshiba CS) was also correct - once the Trucking Co. calls you, the HDTV delivery is the next business day. I had a friend over that helped the truck driver and me move the big MFG. box into my family room - all 1st floor activity. I took pictures of the box all-around (box looked great) before we unpacked my 62HM196. Then we used the same box to re-package my RIP 56HM195 & we helped the truck driver put it into his truck (definitely lighter than the 62HM196 ;) ) to ship back to Toshiba. Thanks! bkazepis 12-01-06, 07:59 AM Well, the bulb on my 52HMX85 finally kicked the bucket. Does your set fall within the defective serial number series? If so you have 2 years on the bulb. Toshiba will send you out a new bulb, you will have to install yourself. gosawx 12-01-06, 09:09 AM Does your set fall within the defective serial number series? If so you have 2 years on the bulb. I have a question that has been bugging me for quite some time and now one seems to know what the issue is (maybe I have been asking the wrong people). I have a Toshiba, model 62HM85. Love the tv, the issue is that when you select guide on the remote to select the pic sizes, my FULL SCREEN button is greyed out. I used to select it before and the pics was great.....now i can only select NATURAL / THEATER VIEW 1 / THEATER VIEW 2 / THEATER VIEW 3. I might be my DVR BOX? I have a Motorola DCT6412 and it was working amazing. All the HD channels had the icons on the bottom right corner (FOX / PBS etc.) and the picture was great....i was able to select FULL SCREEN along with all of the other view until the box burnt out or malfunctioned. My cable provider sent me a new box - the same Motorola....but the thing is now the HD icons are not in the corner no more, but more towards the middle. The picture seems to be zoomed in...and when I try to select the pic size to FULL SCREEN, it is greyed out on my TV menu......I know once it goes FULL SCREEN, it will be back to the way it was...... please help! :( gosawx 12-01-06, 11:30 AM Dear All, Hi am new to this forum, so I wanted to say hi. Put it on an HD channel (like discoveryHD ), hit the button, and let us know what it reads on screen Wryker 12-01-06, 11:30 AM Sukh - W/my 62HM196 that button is also grayed out but ONLY on HD channels. If it's grayed out on standard stations it's due to your Cable box configuration. To change that shut the box off all the way and press 'menu' (or is it guide?) and then after 3-5 seconds you'll see your options and one has to do w/handling 480 standard channels - you either have the box 'stretch' them or choose 480i or 480p. that will take care of it. magredc5 12-01-06, 11:42 AM Dear All, Hi am new to this forum, so I wanted to say hi. When you say the HD icons are now near the middle, (for HD content) are there black bars on the side or does the picture fill in the entire screen? When you say it looks zoomed in, is the picture squeezed (every one is tall/skinny)? On my TV with an upconvert DVD-R over HDMI, I cannot select FULL either when the input is 720p or 1080i because the picture is already provided in the correct 16:9 format and fills in the entire screen. Joeycasz 12-01-06, 12:21 PM I'm new as a member but I've been coming here for news and answers for a while now. I finally have a question of my own and to the best of my knowledge it hasn't been asked or answered yet so here goes... I read on here once (the person was speculating) that it would be very possible for Toshiba to release a firmware update to allow the HDMI ports to accept a 1080p signal due to it's native resolution. He also said that it would also be very possible to just have a new HDMI board installed in the TV and thus allowing 1080p to come in through the new HDMI ports. Does anyone know if any one of these options is in fact possible or even in the works? I own a Toshiba 56HM195 by the way. oldcarguy 12-01-06, 07:22 PM Hi, Just got my 62mx196 home and hooked up and so far so good except I tried hooking up my PC to it and received the message not supported. I am a greenhorn to this so any help would be great! I have this set. The TV only supports a max resolution of 1024x768 through the VGA port (according to the manual, I haven't actually tested). Perhaps your PC is set higher, especially if it was connected to a large flat-panel monitor prior to being hooked to the TV. I would hook up my old monitor and set my resolution to 1024x768, then try it again. If you want a higher resolution, you would probably need a DVI-HDMI type setup and would need to tinker with the resolutions until you were happy. Getting a true pixel-to-pixel display is exceedingly hard to do; I've all but given up, even using DVI-to-HDMI. Most video cards can't do it, and those that can usually require additional software and a lot of work figuring out settings (which no one will help you do). On the other hand, if you have S-video out on your laptop, getting a grainy display at 800x600 on it is exceedingly easy. So it all depends on what you hope to accomplish. briloop 12-03-06, 07:20 AM I bought a Toshiba 62HM84 at Fry's in August 2005. I also bought Fry's extended warranty. Yesterday, the bulb blew out after an estimated 4,000 hours of use. Fry's extended warranty does not cover bulbs. The Toshiba manual states that the bulb life is 6,000 hours at high setting and 8,000 hours at low setting. Mine blew out after 4,000 hours on low setting. Based on my experience, bulb life is half of what is stated in the manual. Toshiba sells replacement bulbs for $199.00, plus shipping. I will never buy another DLP set again. It is too expensive for me. Bill Shenefelt 12-03-06, 08:52 AM I remember there was asomething in this thread about Toshiba replacing certain serial numbers free due to lamp failures. Not sure where though. If you have the SN on the lamp, you might check with Toshiba to see if yours is listed. I bought an extended warrantee thru ******* and the lamp was covered so when mine blew, I just got my replacement thru their warrantee and did not check with Toshiba later when I heard about the problem. Mine lasted similarly a little over 4000 hrs I think. Blew last January after about 13 months. I got my initial set in the fall of 04 and they replaced the entire set in Jan 05 thinking the TVOS guide was defective. Considering the cost of replacement picture tubes in my older tosh rear projector, the short life of bulbs and cost versus the longer life of a tube set and that cost, the DLP comes out ahead I think. I have not heard uch about the life of LCD rear projector units of HD tube units but I doubt they would save you money in the long run. Especially considering the DLP bulb is user replacable. If you figure the cost of a bulb (every year) versus other TV costs like cable, sat or dish or movie rentals, it is not that much. I just hope the balance of the mechanisms in a DLP are sturdy as they are not likely user replacable. IF it only costs me $200 a year for upkeep of mine, I will be quite satisfied. A factor they do not have control over may also be the atoosphere in the room. If contaminated with cooking or people smoke or other stuff it could have an impact on the bulb skin. Not sure but could be a possiblilty as the boubs are exploding, not "burning out" briloop 12-03-06, 08:57 AM I called Toshiba. They told me there is no extended warranty on the bulb for the 62HM84. I am going to keep the 62HM84 going until comparable LCD HDTVs are selling for less than $1,000. I may have to wait a few years, though. The way prices are dropping, and with the projected end of analog in 2009, LCD may become affordable by then. Then, I will definitely get rid of the 62HM84. $200 per year maintenance cost on a TV set might be reasonable to some folks, but not me. Especially when you are in year 2 of ownership. I have never handled the bulb. We have a smoke free house. I have treated the 62HM84 like a computer, like not turning it on and off several times a day. The set is turned off when not in use. oldcarguy 12-03-06, 09:41 AM Instead of hooking up the PC I think I will just buy an Xbox, need a new video card it seems to be able to get a good picture so just spending the money on an Xbox seems to make more sense. With the 62mx196 is turning TV on and off 2-3 times a day hard on the bulb life? Thanks for the replies! gshelley61 12-03-06, 11:27 AM I bought a Toshiba 62HM84 at Fry's in August 2005. It is too expensive for me. Shop around on the web and eBay for a replacement lamp bulb. You should be able to get one for qute a bit less than that. While 4000 hrs is certainly shorter than the claimed lifespan, replacing bulbs periodically is part of owning any microdisplay RPTV or front projector (DLP, LCD, LCoS/SXRD, etc.). With DLP, once the new bulb is installed you get the added benefit of having exactly the same picture quality as a brand new set. This is not true of CRT, plasma, LCD or LCoS as they all will have some image degradation over time from use. This does not happen with DLP. stp24core 12-03-06, 11:35 AM What exactly is the risk when using the 62hm196 as a display for your PC? I know the manual states that you should not attempt this, but why? Sorry if this has been answered. Hunter Green 12-03-06, 12:31 PM The risk is that you might get unhappy with how it works and call Toshiba and use up their customer service resources. There's no actual risk to the TV or PC other than that it might not look as good as you hoped. Latner 12-03-06, 03:40 PM You can check the toshiba website under "Customer Support"- "Updates/Notices" to see if your lamp falls under the 2yr. warranty from Toshiba. All you need is the serial# of your tv. Product Resource: Information for Owners of 2005 DLP® Televisions To ensure the satisfaction of our customers and to maintain the integrity and quality of our products, Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. is issuing an important product update. Toshiba is committed to customer service and to continuously improving the quality of its products. It has come to our attention that the lamp life of some lamps in a limited number of 2005 DLP television models and serial number ranges may be less than our expectation. As part of our ongoing commitment to customer service, Toshiba is extending the warranty on the originally-installed lamp in those particular 2005 DLP television models and serial number ranges for one additional year (for a total warranty period of two years for the originally-installed lamp) to enable customers with those televisions to obtain a new and improved lamp free of charge if the originally-installed lamp fails. If you own one of the DLP television models listed below, please enter your serial number in the box below to determine if your particular DLP television qualifies for this extended warranty. The serial number can be located on the back panel of the television. Be assured that Toshiba DLP televisions are of the highest quality and this update regards a limited issue. wharf1940 12-03-06, 06:38 PM I'm sorry if this has been answered before, but i am having problems getting the right size picture from my hi def channels through anything but coax. The first day I got it, it had a noisey fan... tech came and there was a wire in it, ok easy fix. Couple monthes later when I set up my HTPC through DVI-HMDI if I powered the tv off then tryed to turn it back on, while the HTPC was still running, the red light would just flash and I would have to unplug from the wall and plug it back in, in order for it to power on. Called a tech he said I qualified for a bulb replacement and that was the problem....(which it wasnt) I searched the forums and I found someone else had a similar case and it was caused by the HDCP link. It was said that the only way to prevent this would be to switch to an analog source before turning the set off. Which has worked flawlessly untill now.... I have less than a month left in my warrenty and I have recently got a PS3(HDMI) and an HD cable box(Component). Now, no matter which input I change it to, I allways need to unplug it from the wall inorder to turn it back on. I turn off everything before I turn my tv off except for the HTPC. This is a major pain in the ass and defect on Toshibas part, is there anyway I can get them to repair/flash/fix/replace this problem. The tech didnt seem to know anything about it when I called him out the second time. Thanks for ur responses. kona1611 12-06-06, 02:35 AM Well, something strange has happened since yesterday. Firstly, some background: I have been a thoroughly thoroughly happy customer with my 52HM95 that I got in Feb 2006. I've been through one bulb in August (my serial number was on the Toshiba list, so I got that remedied quickly), other than that no problems. Since day one, I've had one of the middle of the road RadioShack sold Philips HD rabbit years that I have set on top of my TV to pull in the local HD OTA channels thru ANT 1. Until yesterday I could only pick up the local CBS-affiliate channels which come on 4-1, 4-2, and 4-3 (CBS 720p, MyMississippi 480i, CW 480i, respectively). But all the sudden I was able to start pulling the local PBS-HD channel on 2-2 (1080i) but quite a low signal, and regular PBS Digital (480i) on 2-1. All that to say, as of Monday night, I could still see and hear the HD channels OTA. Also several OTA regular channels could be seen: 2, 4, 9, 27, etc). But starting last night, I no longer can see video on the digital channels (2-1, 2-2, 4-1, 4-2, 4-3), however the audio is coming in loud and clear. I have been through every menu I can find with the Toshiba remote and had it re-find all the ANT 1 (which is where the rabbit ears are plugged into)...and they are found.. but no video. I've reconnected the antenna, to no avail. I can't imagine what I might have done...or might have happened. Any ideas? BTW, when I go to a digital channel (e.g. 4-1) it no longer shows the resolutoin on the lower left side as it normally does. Signal strength is between 85%-90% all the time. Could it be that my rabbit ears are dying? No matter how i turn the ears or the middle plate antenna thingy, nothing gets better. Again, sound is fine.  FYI, I have a Samsung Upscaling DVD-HD950 DVD player connected via HDMI 1, and it shows movies fine in 1080i and 720p. PS2 progressive games (such as GranTurismo4 show fine in 720p/1080i) show fine as well. I get digital cable thru my Motorola pizza box -> LiteON DVD-R LVW-5115GHC+ -> TV. I thought maybe something in them was causing it, but I can completely turn my cable off and it still does it. Sorry for being such a noobie. Any ideas? I'd appreciate them. Thanks. sparrow_69 12-06-06, 04:29 AM Has anyone purchased a warranty from www.televisionwarranties.com (warrantech warranty)? Bill Shenefelt 12-06-06, 09:03 AM IF you use the TV a LOT, it should be worth it. I figure a bulb a year for mine based on experience. For $100 you could get at least one if not two, well worth it. I don't know the outfit though. gshelley61 12-06-06, 09:11 AM Has anyone purchased a warranty from www.televisionwarranties.com (warrantech warranty)? They are offering 3yr warranty for 159$ + bulb warranty (up to 2 bulbs) for 99$ extra. I'm seriously considering it, but would like to get some feedback on warrantechwarranties... Warrantech RepairMaster extendeded warranties are good. I had to use mine on a Samsung DLP last year, and they covered it no problem. It doesn't matter where you buy the warranty from. It comes as a package in the mail and you activate it online once you receive it. You deal with Warrantech directly. You must have at least 90 days left on your original factory warranty in order to qualify for a RepairMaster extended warranty. To give you an idea, a light engine replacement (a common repair with DLP's) can easily run more than $1000, so these warranties can be lifesavers. stp24core 12-06-06, 02:43 PM TV finally got here yesturday at 6pm. "Full" is only an option for 480i and 480p sources. It's not needed for 720p or 1080i sources, that's why it's inoperable for those. waited18years 12-07-06, 03:03 PM Well, something strange has happened since yesterday. Thanks. The first thing that I would try is to power off the set and then unplug it for a few minutes to force a reset. jumpinjoe 12-07-06, 03:58 PM It's been a while since I've visited the AVS forum so I thought I would drop by to say all is well with my Toshiba 72HM195 and Symbio unit. Can you actually believe the CableCard has worked for 6 months without one issue? Only problem I had with Symbio was when I had it recording something and I decided I did not want to record it. I could not stop the madness :) Had to unplug it so I could watch one of the football games in HD. Now I'm just waiting for Toshiba to come out with a 96" or greater DLP. cchhaappyy 12-07-06, 09:59 PM Hello, I cannot get an answer from my local repair shop regarding my problem. When I turn my TV on it blinks 50 green blinks and then blinks red once and turns off. The manual suggests that this may be a lense cover problem or a burnt out bulb. I am hoping to find a solution since the replacement bulb is over 500 dollars on this two year old TV. Does anyone know what the problems is for the symptoms mentioned above? I would like to know if anyone is running the Oppo 971/981 and getting macroblocking?I have the 72 in. model with the Oppo 971 which, by the way, is an awesome player. When watching The Da Vinci Code, which has lots of dark scenes, we noticed quite a bit of macroblocking, but otherwise it's been OK. I wrote Oppo before buying the unit because I had read a recommendation to use the Oppo 970 with Toshiba DLP units. They told me the trick is to calibrate the TV very carefully, paying particular attention to the brightness and contrast settings. I would have to say that, all in all, I don't consider macroblocking a big problem. georgecortes 12-10-06, 04:24 PM Now I'm just waiting for Toshiba to come out with a 96" or greater DLP.It's interesting you made that comment. I also have the 72 in. model. I switched from a Tosh 65 in. model. I love my TV, it's an incredible buy for the quality of the picture. My point, though, is that after a few weeks, 72 inches doesn't look that big... I think screen sizes are a bit like drug addiction... you have to keep on increasing the dose because after a while it just doesn't have the same effect... I have had a 50HM66 since June, and I have been very pleased. I had the light engine problem, but Toshiba took care of it. I just purchased a 42HM66. Different menus, remote, etc. My question is how can I change the screen size when in DTV mode? Thanks for any help. Latner 12-16-06, 10:26 AM Just curious if anyone knows what Toshiba did to the D95LMP to make it "new and improved" or "blue dot" version? I'm asking because I bought a spare that is supposedly the newer style and the only thing I can see that is different about it is on the old style lamp there are a two vent slots on the side of the housing and on the new style they apparently removed the center piece of metal where the 2 vent slots are to make it one big open area now making for better cooling? As far as the lamp and filament itself they look exactly the same. D.Brunner 12-16-06, 12:53 PM I understand Toshiba changed the manufacturer after all the problems started with blown bulbs. Julio Bro! 12-21-06, 10:59 PM Hi, longtime..., although a few weeks ago I recommended replacing your lamps with Vance Baldwin Electronics. Hope you got some good from them. OK, besides my lamp blowing up, there's an ongoing issue that, from my search here, was first suffered by dessa, but it's best described by a.b. christie: My set had been getting harder and harder to start. When you turned it on you would hear a loud electrical bussing noise and the set would go into the bad lamp reset cycle. it could take up to a half hour to get the set turned on. Since I recieved the new bulb, about 5 weeks ago the same problem has occured only now I can't get the set to start at all. It makes sense to me that this could be a bad Lamp ballast. There's also couch7 and LR6AGB001, who required a ballast replacement for their sets. My unit is a 52HM84 with exactly 2 years and the electrical buzzing happened a couple of weeks before blowing the lamp. Now with the new lamp I have a.b. christie's thing going. I checked the lamp and was OK, then tried the unit without the lamp by holding the lamp-door switch. The arcing buzz came up and it's located at the bottom, left side of the TV's cabinet. My initial guess was an electronic switch or relay, and something, ballast like, as possible second. But with these findings, the ballast seems to be the problem. So, the question is: Could I replace the ballast by myself? How much is it and where may I buy it? Is it easy to locate and install? Where may I get the diagrams for this? waited18years 12-22-06, 12:54 PM Hi, longtime..., although a few weeks ago I recommended replacing your lamps with Vance Baldwin Electronics. So, the question is: Could I replace the ballast by myself? How much is it and where may I buy it? Is it easy to locate and install? Where may I get the diagrams for this?I just looks through the service manual and the procedure for replacing the ballast is fairly straightforward [if you are into that sort of thing]. It looks like the steps would be: 1. Remove the back cover (13 screws). 2. Bracket removal (3 screws). 3. Optical engine removal (4 screws). 4. Remove lamp unit (2 screws). 5. Remove 2 screws holding chassis of ballast power unit to detach the chassis. Treat with care to avoid damage to lamp power cable. 6. Detach ballast power unit by removing 4 "substrate stoppers" [not sure what this means, possibly plastic stand offs] that hold the ballast power unit. Caution: When you install new ballast power unit, install it while pushing the four corners of the board directly. Installation while pressing the heat sink may cause the [circuit board] pattern [to] crack. I assume that the user replaceable lamp should be removed before beginning the disassembly. Oh, and the power cord... unplug it before starting to avoid any nasty surprises ;-). Service manual [source of quotes above] is available on ebay as "Toshiba 46HM84 52HM84 62HM84 DLP RPTV Service Manual". Cost is $7.99 including shipping. Looks like the ballast is available on ebay ($75 + $40 shipping) as "Toshiba LAMP BALLAST Part No. 23122468". May be able to find it cheaper on web. Look earlier in thread for light engine source, should also have ballast. waited18years 12-22-06, 01:38 PM How would this be any different than when the lamp explodes? Once the circuit is broken there is no juice flowing through it.Once the lamp envelope is broken the lamp can no longer function, but the electrodes that form the arc may still be in place and serve as a path for the high voltage arc. That said, I admit that I am probably just being paranoid. The design engineers surely thought about this issue and provided a fail safe in case the lamp electrodes were lost during the bulb failure. sparrow_69 12-23-06, 03:49 AM Well, after 3 months of use, it seems that I have noticed a problem with my 52hmx85. Eastman 12-27-06, 01:03 AM This is my first posting and I really enjoy reading everyones posting. I wanted to put in my lamp experience. Purchased my 46HM95 Nov. 05. My original lamp blew August 06 and the second lamp just blew Dec 26th 06. I can not tell you how many hours though 4 months of service on the 2nd bulb is unacceptable. I do run in high bright mode. Both times now Toshiba Service Center has sent me a replacement bulb. I asked if I could get a spare and they said NO. Our TV blew out just as we were ready to watch a movie.... bad timing. If the TV senses that the bulb is not within the correct parameters after a short time, it will flash the yellow and cycle power to again arc the bulb. I've tried just about every suggestion to achieve 1080i/p HTPC thats been suggested. After 3 pc's, multiple video cards, powerstrip custom settings, etc, the best I was able to get was a dismal 720p...until now. I picked up a cheap Emachines from Circuit City, threw in an extra 512mb ram, and purchased a new video card from New Egg. With nothing besides ATI CCC, with DVI -> HDMI, I was able to get 1920x1080 resolution. Sickens me that I wasn't able to get this on PC's 4 times the price. Anyway, thought I would pass this info on. Emachines T3418 $350 Sapphire Radeon X1900GT $150 It's tempting to set one of those up for nothing other than to be a flight simulator and video game system. zackdadams 12-30-06, 02:47 PM I'm using it as an entertainment hub. Running Windows Media Center (Vista soon), 5.1 audio card, and a cable tuner card, the pc is now my TiVO. The sound is hooked up to a surround receiver. I rip my personal movie collection to my hard drive, which also plays through media center. I am experimenting with a software line-doubler also. In other words, you can have your entire media library, photo's, movies, tv shows, etc, available with one remote control, on one display, in High Def. How cool is that? I've done this a few times for customers of mine, yet never been able to have it myself, as my Toshiba "didn't support" it, until now. :) Cheers. Future uses: I've been reading about a new pci HDTV "Cable Card", as in from your cable company, that's being released soon. I'll definitely be using that. How'd you get it installed? zackdadams 12-30-06, 03:05 PM Negative. :) Wryker 12-30-06, 03:08 PM Negative. :) oook. i'll take your smiley face to determine you 'tweaked' it yourself (the TV). I've toyed w/the idea of trying something similar. Are you using an HDMI out of the PC I trust? My TV is in the same room as my PC (3 PCs actually) but I have XP on all of them. I'd love to be able to view movies in HD from the computer vs DVDs. Especially since I have @400 DVDs. If you have information you could email me directly I'm MORE than open to it (and would love it). Michael zackdadams 12-30-06, 03:16 PM No, no. I have done nothing to the TV nor the PC. I was afraid I would have to resort to that, seeing as I was unable to get 1080i from my PC. That's the reason I made the initial post. This cheap little emachines pc, with that video card did the job. I am running a Radeon X1900GT video card, with a DVI to HDMI cable to my TV. Then I simply open up display properties in ATI Catalyst Control Center, enable display #2 @1920x1080 resolution. There is even a setting for HDTV refresh rate. Simple as that. There is a small amount of overscan (desktop area is larger than your display), but this is negligible, as it makes little difference when watching media. I may toy around with that. You can download 1080p WMVHD clips from Microsoft's website to test if it working correctly, and/or your pc can run it. jestmaty 12-30-06, 03:24 PM Please be gentle, I'm a noob and am having trouble navigating this website. It appears that a TON of information is available, and I have a question re: 62hm196. Mine is actually given the 116# because it is sold through Costco. The lamp blew on Christmas eve at 4pm. Owned it for exactly 90 days when this happened. Nothing was open and I was expecting a bunch of people over the next two days. I went to Costco the day after Xmas, and exchanged it for another just like it. I didn't feel this was abusing their return policy because I only had the tv for 90 days when it quit. My question is this.... is there a way to check how many hours the tv has been on?? I read that some people had their lamp blow at xxxx hours, how could they know exactly how long their set was on? epsilon 12-30-06, 03:27 PM I've been following this thread for about 6 months now. Julio Bro! 12-30-06, 05:20 PM How would this be any different than when the lamp explodes? Once the circuit is broken there is no juice flowing through it. I agree with you; the circuit is open, so no problem should come of that. The weird thing is that the system tries to start without the lamp there, although that's how I found out the problem was not the lamp. As an update, I tried Toshiba to see if they would cover something, given the nature of the problem. They agreed to cover 100% of the parts, so I still have to pay for labor. A tech came and diagnosed a bad ballast and he has a new one, but couldn't install until Toshiba sends the authorizing document. Right now everything seems to be in order, but the tech will come Tuesday or Wednesday, so I still have to wait. I sure hope I can be there when he works the unit, I wanna see the stuff. Hunter Green 12-31-06, 10:05 AM In other words, you can have your entire media library, photo's, movies, tv shows, etc, available with one remote control, on one display, in High Def. How cool is that? Oh, I did that with a D-Link DSM-520 for about the price you paid for the video card alone. But you can't run a flight sim through that! Julio Bro! 12-31-06, 12:24 PM This is my first posting and I really enjoy reading everyones posting. Our TV blew out just as we were ready to watch a movie.... bad timing. Question: Has anyone ever tried to retrofit a lamp from another more reliable brand into the lamp housing of the Toshiba XXHM95 series. I am starting to investigate this, but it is hard getting the electrical specifications of the lamps. Thanks, Jeff :) I'd say it's the ballast, like what happened to me and others. Go for that first. In regards to a retro-fit, I don't know what these guys are doing, it's probably a matter of economics. They go for the cheapest design. But then, consider this. For decades high intensity bulbs and lamps have been used in more difficult places than the inside of a TV or projector; for instance...cars. Think about it, sealed beams and halogen bulbs are used with vibration, excess heat, excess cold, and stay on even before a crash. And for how long these work? 5, 8 years, perhaps more; so, what's the deal with the TV lamps? People might say: "Oh, but these TVs use special optics and higher intensities which require delicate elements to work." Although that's true, it's the same for the other examples. Cars are using high intensity discharge units which use other gasses, besides halogen, to work. Lamp posts are another example, they use sodium and mercury (like ours), to obtain more light intensity at the same power rate. Lamp posts endure most things a car endures, and I've seen them work during hurricanes until power goes out...then they turn back on...safe. Well, anyone has a contact with Sylvania or Phillips automotive so they can save us? Can you post the one on this or send to my e-mail? websthetics 12-31-06, 01:23 PM I posted this as an aside to my lamp life experience in the lamp life topic but I guess it makes more sense to post it here. I have a Toshiba 52HM84. My wife spilled a little liquid in the lower lip of the screen. Now I have a black blotch inside the protective covering of the screen. Can that be cleaned? It looks like it's turning from a blotch to a smudge as it dries but it's still going to be annoying. Ray_Finkel 01-01-07, 10:23 AM Just turned on my set after about a week of non-use and the picture, regardless of input, flutters up and down, with repeating horizontal lines. The normal black screen which indicates an empty input is there but the display box to switch inputs flutters with the rest of the screen (the snowy/fluttery screen is present on all inputs: cable, dvd, 360) The display almost appears as if there is constant electrical interference (although i think i have ruled out interferenec as a possibility). Anyone know what could be the cause for this? Shackler79 01-02-07, 02:11 PM Quote: Originally Posted by Julio Bro! Out of the box, this set is calibrated for video levels 16-235. There is no amount of adjustments that can be made with the OSD menu (brightness/contrast) that will allow proper calibration to PC levels 0-255. Once you hit a certain brightness level >55, blacks/grays just start to turn a disgusting green color. So basically, I've been using the nvidia control panel and creating a custom color profile that effective squeezes the PC's 0-255 levels into the TV's 16-235 levels, so that black/white levels "appear" correct (although they really aren't...they are compressed). My question is, is it possible to re-calibrate the TV to proper PC levels using the service menu? Or is this set pretty much made specifically for video levels only, and does not have the ability to do 0-255? I'm disappointed with my 52HM85, inside of the first 90 days I owned the set, the colour wheel and engine had to be replaced...it was in the shop for two months. Just as we were getting ready to leave for a weeks holiday there was a loud noise and then no picture. The set starts up and then shuts down not picture no sound. Because my wife said there was a loud pop I took the cover off to see if the bulb was broken or showed any sign of damage. When I removed the panel I observed that the screws that retain the bulb had not been tightened although the bulb seemed to be in place. This TV is a lemon, not to mention it is disappointing to see shabby workmanship from the technician who replaced the colour wheel and engine. I was told by toshiba that if I had any problems after the inital repair they would replace the set. Has anyone else had any problems inside of a year? We just got a PS3 and it is evolving into a spectacular HTPC, so that will put an end to the TVGOS+Symbio horsesh*t. indil377 01-03-07, 08:02 PM Just curious if anyone knows what Toshiba did to the D95LMP to make it "new and improved" or "blue dot" version? I'm asking because I bought a spare that is supposedly the newer style and the only thing I can see that is different about it is on the old style lamp there are a two vent slots on the side of the housing and on the new style they apparently removed the center piece of metal where the 2 vent slots are to make it one big open area now making for better cooling? As far as the lamp and filament itself they look exactly the same. The actual problem with the lamps was the impurity of the mercury. The lamp manufacturer used some nasty stuff. These new lamps use a better grade of mercury and it is supposed to take care of the early failure problem. cleoo 01-04-07, 04:13 AM The blue LED and yellow LED were off when the TV was off, but when I turned the TV on the blue LED lights up and the yellow LED blinks with no picture, just sound. While the manual says not to do this though they talk about connecting DVI devices. Is it jst that PC video cards can generate many outputs many of which are not HDTV compliant. Are there dangers to the TV by trying of will they just not display if not compliant? Are ther dangers beyond the usual X caveats of not driving any monitor outside of its specs. If so does anyone have X modelines that work for this monitor. Taes a couple of seconds at least i2k 01-08-07, 07:41 AM Did you tweak the settings on your Harmony Remote re: the input delays etc? i2k 01-08-07, 07:41 AM Also if the channels are switching modes on the screen, you may experience this also. ie: from SD to HD or vice versa. Julio Bro! 01-08-07, 09:17 AM Ok, so has anyone done this replacement? I'm pretty sure (but not positive) this is what I need to do to my 52HMX94 as well. I've tried talking to the place where I bought my TV, but I just keep getting snubbed. If been done, where did you buy the ballast from and how difficult was it to replace? Please advise....thanks so much in advance! OK, I got my unit finally repaired. Toshiba took 2 days to send the authorization to the tech shop, but I had to wait till the end of the weekend and holiday here...3 more days. Toshiba agreed to pay for all the parts replaced, so I only had to pay for labor. Well, they came morning and my wife was there to look at the whole thing. She said he removed the bottom rear cover, which didn't show much of the screen area. Then removed a bunch of screws which release the circuits and parts "trays". The light engine and ballast are on one of this trays. The ballast is a small circuit board with 2 metal heat shields. The tech carefully handled a bunch of thin cables and connectors, and unscrewed the board. Then screwed the new one and connected it, screwed everything back and that was it. The TV came back to live without a hitch; $150. My wife says I could do it myself, but being extra careful because some parts looked flimsy...you know, easy to break. I already sent for the service manual, so in the future...hopefully in 2 or 3 years...I can get the thing done myself. Mainly because Toshiba isn't gonna cover anything anymore. Lamp was $187 and the ballast I saw at eBay for $80, so total $267. Yeah, I'll try to avoid wasting more money. But, if lamps and ballast go down by that time, or replaced by better technologies, I might get the tech to do it; it's a warrantied job for 30 days. Shackler, read carefully what I described about my ballast problem, and if it's the exact same behavior and noise, then it should be the same problem. Try first if Toshiba would cover something for you, if they do, go with a tech. If you'll try yourself, then look for the ballast on eBay and the internet, also for the service manual. A couple of guys at eBay have the manuals for $8 and $14 as downloads. My advice would be to leave the TV unplugged for a day before working on it, so any residual charges dissipate. The other thing is to be extra careful with cables, connections and any flimsy looking parts. Anyway, I'm happy again. Phreshness 01-08-07, 09:44 AM Did you tweak the settings on your Harmony Remote re: the input delays etc? Not since I purchased the remote. As I said, the delay occurs both with the TV Remote as well as the Harmony. Also I noticed that if you change channels rapidly, the TV sometimes displays the wrong station number... does this ever happen to anyone? magredc5 01-08-07, 09:51 AM Not since I purchased the remote. As I said, the delay occurs both with the TV Remote as well as the Harmony. Also I noticed that if you change channels rapidly, the TV sometimes displays the wrong station number... does this ever happen to anyone? Yes, my TV has behaved this way since I got it over a year ago: - Often a lag between button on remote and TV's response. I.e. if you hold the Volume up button, it may increase gradually then stop for a few seconds then jump. - I've seen the wrong channel number display if you change channels quickly but if you hit the Recall button it displays the correct channel number. I'm not overly concerned - never had any real problem. Julio Bro! 01-10-07, 05:39 AM I would like to add, regarding my TV's recent repair, that now the unit takes a longer time to actually turn off. It stays with the flashing LED and the fan on a few minutes more than before. That feature delays the powering down of the TV - check your manual. Snills 01-11-07, 01:46 AM Hey guys theres just way too much to read through in this topic so ill just ask here, Ive had a Toshiba 52HMX85 for almost a year now... Did you find a solution yet? I also have a PS3 and a 52HMX84 and the HDMI doesn't work (flashes). Component Video connectors works fine. Note: Other devices that have failed to work over HDMI are: HD Tivo and 2 different DVD players that Toshiba sent me. They finally sent me a 3rd that worked. A repair guy told me that this TVset uses HDMI 1.0 and all new devices use 1.2\1.3 which is the problem. Not sure if I beleive him or not. I'm calling Toshiba tomorrow. Please reply ASAP. Have you tried unplugging? Other than that you need to call Toshiba - they should be able to provide assistance. i2k 01-12-07, 06:17 AM 1.3.2 is valid for your model, but nonetheless it won't come up. Have you tried unplugging? Other than that you need to call Toshiba - they should be able to provide assistance. Trust me a couple of us on here tried that 'update'. 1. Toshiba customer service absolutely sucks, your about to find that out. 2. They will be pissed that you have install a firmware update that was not provided by them. 3. You may have your TV working in about 2 months if your lucky - or even replaced in some scenarios. Depending on backordered parts. 4. ThroItInEr 01-12-07, 11:06 AM I did call Toshiba *yesterday afternoon* They gave me a number to a repair shop *Toshiba certified or something* so I called them this morning and they are the ones sending out the Tech... But still I can't believe they will be here the same morning that I called. But they will more than likely have to replace crap... Which could take forever... ugh... I did leave the TV unplugged *5pm last night till this morning at 8am* and when I plugged it back in it turned itself on and it gives me the same, "Now Booting," message. The yellow light flashes 3 times in a row then stops *repeats*... THe blue led stays solid. i2k 01-12-07, 11:08 AM Yep - same issue identified with that light sequence as about 4 of us had on here - its going to be the main digital board. Now based on Resource for : Notice to Consumers Regarding Toshiba Integrated Televisions and CableCARD™ Technology (http://www.tacp.toshiba.com/resource.asp?resourceid=15) Toshiba is proud to offer CableCARD™ technology on its 2004 and 2005 integrated televisions. CableCARD™ eliminates the need for a separate stand-alone cable box*. By inserting a CableCARD™ (provided by your local cable company) into the CableCARD™ slot on your Toshiba integrated television, you can access digital cable channels without having a separate cable box. CableCARD™ technology, like all new and emerging technology, may from time to time experience compatibility issues due to the different ways in which television manufacturers and cable system operators implement the CableCARD™ specifications. Most issues can be easily resolved. In the event that you experience a performance-related CableCARD™ issue with your Toshiba integrated television, please contact Toshiba Consumer Solutions by calling (800) 631-3811. *Certain advanced and interactive digital cable services (such as video-on-demand, a cable operator's enhanced program guide, and data-enhanced television services) will not work with the use of a CableCARD™ and may require the use of a separate set-top box from your cable operator. After six month's, I'd personally give-up the CableCARD and use a set-top box, ... but that's not the case for me since I just use the Coax Cable IN for my $14 a month Limited Basic Cable service from Comcast. Last night's 24 2-hour premere & Golden Globe Award show looked glorious in 1080p HiDef!!! :D Phil RickGr4 01-16-07, 01:26 PM I have been posting in enough threads lately that I could repeating myself, sorry if I am. I have another small thread going called "Toshiba 50HMX96 CableCARD Question". In that thread I have provided some information in regards to how I was able to get a CableCARD working properly in my 50HMX96. The problem could be exclusive to Toshiba. I have not had ANY CableCARD issues with my Panasonic Plasma TV's after some early issues were resolved about 1 1/2 years ago. Toshiba sets don't seem to always activate the CableCARD properly when the cable company sends out it's normal hit. Toshiba's seem to need a "cold initialization" hit to be sent. I was told it was a slower and more thorough hit. I have seen this work with both Moto and SA CableCARDs. The problem is finding someone at your cable company that knows anything about it. I am lucking because I know someone within Comcast Minneapolis-St. Paul who works in this area and was able to help me. Again, if you have a Toshiba with CableCARD problems you need to find someone that within your cable company that can send a "cold initialization" hit to your TV. It should solve the problem. My set has been working perfectly since the cold hit was sent. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=755707 skandl 01-16-07, 09:42 PM Good luck with your 116 skandl, I bought one from Costco last September to replace a dead 3 1/2 year old Mitz. Thanks I have a 52HM95 DLP, and I run DVI-to-component to the TV using a dongle (my video card is ATI x1900 series). I tried DVI-to-HDMI and the picture quality was horrible, as was the severe overscan. Regarding Toshiba's warning about not hooking up PCs, just make sure that you select 60Hz refresh rate on your video card since that is the rate used by the TV; and make sure your resolution is set to either 1280x720 or 1920x1080 resolution. 1080i gives a slightly sharper picture but, since the HM series is 720p native, you get the least amount of overscan with 1280x720. DO NOT, however, use 1024x768 or any other video card output resolution, as the TV can and will malfunction. This is probably why Toshiba discourages PC usage, as many would probably be tempted treat their HDTV as they would their computer monitor. YMMV, of course...but I'm getting excellent results using this method. :) sparrow_69 01-17-07, 02:49 AM Well, after 3 months of use, it seems that I have noticed a problem with my 52hmx85. There seems to be what looks like a small piece of dust on the right bottom of the screen. Its definitely not something that is on the surface of the screen, but inside. Anyone know if this is an easy fix? The tv is under warranty, but I can't say that I enjoy the thought of some sort of major fix on my tv... Well, toshiba tech just left. All is well. It turned out to be some dust on the inside of the screen and mirror. All you need to do is take off the 10 or so screws holding on the front screen and wipe down screen/mirror. It solved the problem. I was suprised how much dust was in there. I actually had little dust bunnies! Considering how anal I am about cleaning, and that I've only had the tv for 3 months, I was surprised. I'm going to clean it out myself and try sealing the gap between the bezel/tv with some tape to try and keep the dust out. The tech said the best way to clean was to blow out the dust with a can of compressed air, then after everything settles, to wipe down with a lightly damp cloth. I'll give that a try. He also mentioned that dust in the light shows up as baseball shaped blothches, which look a bit washed out on certain colors, as opposed to dark spots. Just thought this info might help someone out who is in the same situation sirdelsol 01-19-07, 12:08 AM I am very new to AVS forum although I have been reading it a lot I have yet to post. I hope someone can help me with a problem...I recently purchased a 46hm84 (second hand) and it worked great the first day....but I just turned it on today and had a purple background...turned it off and it worked fine. 10 minute later it happend again and am not sure what to do. I purchased it froma fellow AVS forum user and seemed very trust worthy so I don't think he tried to pull a fast one (the purple background just came on again!) but am worried about what to do. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I am sure the TV is not under warranty as it is a few years old and I just love the picture quality (when it works!) Any help would greatly be appreciated Thanks in advance, Charles sirdelsol 01-19-07, 12:16 AM I don't think I am able to post a link to the problem unless I have 5 posts but if you google "46hm84 purple problem" you should be able to easily find a post, 3rd from the top at "home theater forum" with pictures posing a similair problem. It would be much faster if you could pick up the lamp and change it yourself which I understand is a simple process. I can't imagine that they would object to this since the replacement procedure is set forth in the manual, but you might ask Costco about this. Could a electrical surge cause it? Have a Monster Cable surge protector that "insures" connected components... When I bought the TV, I also got a heavy UPS backup battery, which protects the whole hometheater. So no, I don't think a surge did it. What I do think is that the ballast, like the lamp, is of undurable design. In fact, it's probable that the faulty ballast made the lamp fail; the noise I heard began a few days before the lamp failure. The ballast is a kind of variable resistance designed to protect the lamp. Gas bulbs, when starting, have a very high resistance until current flows thru. Once the gas is lit, the resistance becomes veeery low. In order to avoid the high current this provokes, the ballast provides the necessary resistance to maintain the current regulated. If the ballast fails, the high current makes the lamp to blow. The tech said it was a good idea to replace the ballast when the lamp failed. One's failure may damage the other. I just hope the new lamp and ballast are of better design and quality, these parts shouldn't fail just like that. Wizard1001001 02-04-07, 12:06 AM Well here I go again, my bulb just blew... today at 6:00pm... 23 hours before the super bowl 1st bulb went at about 1100 hours... 2nd bulb (from toshiba) went at about 1200 hours. Julio Bro! 02-06-07, 05:06 PM Hi: During my problems with lamp and ballast, I bought an OCTAVA 3 to 1 automatic switch which I installed once the TV was repaired. For those here with a single HDMI input, let me say this thing works perfectly, it takes a few seconds changing back to input 1 but it's acceptable. I waited until last weekend to make a new calibration since the repair, to let for lamp break-in. Most settings changed some, but most peculiar was TINT; initially it was R6, now changed to G5. I don't think this is due to the lamp or ballast, I think it's probably the switch, which supposedly has some digital signal correction. Any comments? jefho 02-06-07, 10:27 PM I just have a question, but I don't know where to post it. My apologies if this has been discussed already, but I didn't have time to go thru 200+ pages. Well it all depends... if the DVD player has a better scaling chip than your TV you MAY see a differance (the scaler "adds" pixels to the image to increase resolution from the 480P on dvd's to whatever your TV's native resolution is). How much and if it's worth it is the question. I Bought a Panasonic DVD-S77 to go with my 52HMX85 and I love it, but after the first few movies I can't really tell the differance between the 720P/1080i/480P output settings on the S77 (you can switch betwen outputs on the player during the movie). HDDVD/Blueray is a whole nother ballgame. There is no scaling needed because the full 1080P resolution is there on the disc. This provides and incredibly superior picture, (better than brodcast HD as most of that is very compressed.) Redbullseye41 02-07-07, 12:52 AM I have a Toshiba 52HM84. The lamp blew after 16 months. Component can't manage that much data so it only accepts 1080i/720p/480p/480i signals, the TV will upscale/deinterlace those signals to it's native 1080P. Because the display is 1080p (vs. 1080i). This has been discussed to death many times. Most of these posts seem to be because people are buying PS3s and HD DVD players and finding out that you can only use 1080i output. Again as discussed many times there is virtually no difference in the video quality (gamers seem to insist there is). |
