People seem to be having problems with 129 on certain transponders. I think the rave channel is on 27 or 30 and those are the transponders that people seem to be getting low signals. We should ask, what is your signal strength for 129 on transponders 27 and 30?

Getting Aquiring signal screen(with the 622) and its frozen on it (2 of 5)... checked signal strengths on 129 and this is what I get

This was on the web today announcing Dish carrying HD locals from Albuquerque including ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX. Please correct me if I am wrong but I understand that CBS is NOT being carried in HD over Dish.

DISH can uplink any station they want to - the key is that they can't sell it to the public until the contracts are in place to be able to offer it.

so they are uplinking it as a test or anticipated channel and they'll turn it on for the proper households when they legally can.

BTW, looking at DISH's SI stream, there are tons of DT stations up there that haven't officially launched yet, so a whole lotta testing going on. ;)

In the FWIW department, I just talked to a sup. at Comcast and he said they didn't pull it off, but NBC quit providing it to them. Call NBC and holler.

Makes perfect sense to me! NBC Universal Cable offers that channel to various cable companies that don't carry it for the Olympics (it's a free preview for cable subscribers and a revenue increasing thing for NBC universal cable with more eyeballs to use for higher ad rates).

When the olympics finish, Comcast doesn't sign an extension to carry the channel and they have to pull it as the contract to carry the channel is finished.

So it's Comcast's fault the channel is gone, not NBC Universal Cable's fault.

I don't really miss it now that the Olympics are over. Never saw anything on there but old reruns of stuff I never watched in the first place. What's on that channel now? JR

We all should be lucky we're getting anything from KOB-DT that is in HD and not from a loaner receiver. :D

No one in the Engineering Dept. (where I get continuously transferred) answers the phone. I've called about 4 times, and the receptionist just immediatly transfers me to that department when she hears my voice now. I think I'm the only one in the city who's callling.

Only 2 of the 4 sites today have HD availability (and I think only 2 of the 4 sites tomorrow have HD availability).

Jacksonville and SLC are the non-HD sites today and that means games from those sites will probably be scaled into a widescreen format so it looks nicer on HD monitors.

I've been told to try Fred at ext. 269. I guess I'll just ask him to switch to either the San Diego or Greensboro feed.

Being from Farmington, I have all the Albq. locals via Dishnet except cbs krqe, so I can't watch ncaa tourney in HD at all. I called dish and they said hopefully soon. I put in for a couple of CBS HD's via wavers while I was on the line, so maybe between Denver CBS or LA CBS or KRQE finally settling with dish, I might get to see the masters in HD. But seeing the ncaa championship in HD would be cool too.

I doubt it's that easy. CBS probably mandates what games they show (or not authorize their satellite receiver for games they are not allowed to broadcast).

If anything, complain to CBS (viewer line in NYC). They only have 3 HD transmission paths available to them and UPN so if you have all these games going on, they are limited in what they can send to affiliates. No use producing all 4 games today in HD when you only have 2 paths to use (the 3rd being used for UPN later tonight).

That's a shame KASY-DT "UPN" can't pass though HDTV for this game and I am very doubtfull if they every carry this NCAA feed even SDTV but instead carry same old WWF crap show tonight. :(

But at least I alway can find it in FTA FSS dish. "It's kinda like a shortwave radio Dxing" :)

And of course I still get LA HDTV channels on Directv! :)

I just noted that our local KRQE-DT is falling asleep on not getting the HDTV feed from Air Force game.

I found out that on KCBS-DT on Directv, is showing HDTV showing the very same game as here, so you guys might want to tell KRQE-DT to wake up and smell the coffee and carry the real HDTV feed! :(

UPN doesn't have rights to any tournament action. their HD feed is for UPN programming (everyone hates chris, etc.).

KASY definitely cannot transmit HD programming as they've decided to sell their bandwidth to USDTV. congress really should make a law saying that HD format transmissions is a priority and then auxiliary services like USDTV are secondary to
keep crud like KASY-DT from happening. KASY only allocates themselves enough bandwidth for SD and sells the rest.

I wonder if KRQE was even broadcasting the right feed all day. I say this because I tried logging onto ncaasports' "mmod" with my 87107 area code, and they said that the Greensboro region was "blacked out" in this area code because it was supposed to be the local broadcast (btw, Greensboro was in HD). However, KRQE was broadcasting either from SLC or Jacksonville all day (neither of which was in HD).

There were points throughout the day when KRQE would show the Greensboro games in HD, but that only lasted about 10 minutes. Does anyone know what regions are in HD tomorrow, and if KRQE plans on showing them?

CBS and UPN are distributed over the same set of satellite signals. CBS/UPN only have 3 HD transmission paths available to affiliates. When you have 4 games gong on, CBS has to cut back on where they send HD production trucks to (since on Thursday evening, CBS can have 2 HD paths max and UPN has 1 HD path).

If CBS could add 2 more transmission paths, all NCAA tournament games could be fed in HD to affiliates and thus to us (you'd still fall short with NFL football in HD, though, as CBS airs more NFL football on sundays than 4-5 paths could provide).
Obviously FOX does HD distribution right since they have enough bandwidth to feed every NFL game to affiliates in SD and HD.

that's how UPN gets in the mix. they get 1 path for HD for their primetime programming, and CBS gets the rest (up to 2 paths).

HD sites for Friday/Sunday games are Philly and Auburn Hills (ugly court!)

HD sites for thurs/sat games are san diego and greensboro

i haven't studied next weekend's sites yet to see who gets HD production and who doesn't.

KRQE is also the only local major station that will not let you through to engineering when you call them. I called last night after the beginning of Cold Case and they said that because of the game, they were not caught up with the digital feed (whatever that means) and that they would catch up soon. A few minutes later, they started broadcasting in HD except that the video and audio were terribly out of sync. They then went back to SD for almost the rest of the evening. I think that they may have gone back to HD for about the last 15 minutes of the movie. They're great aren't they?

KRQE has no excuses for not having any NCAA tournament game in HD next weekend - all 4 sites will be produced and distributed in HD.

If the KRQE-DT don't do their homework and don't pass through CBS's HDTV feed.

Then it's time to complain to CBS's HQ in NYC to revolk the KRQE-DT's alfliation status, and give it to other TV station that want's to be a CBS alfliation or have CBS buy the TV station and convert to a true O&O CBS TV station. :mad:

CBS won't do anything about KRQE-DT. Leslie is too busy suing Howard Stern to worry about existing CBS stations.

Came home early to check the Duke/LSU game. KRQE was not passing through the HD feed. Called their news room, and they got it switched on within 5 seconds of me hanging up with them.

The lady that answered tried to tell me that not all the games would be in HD. Don't really understand that....

All the games will be in HD (CBS has enough capacity in HD distribution to send all the games to affiliates this weekend).

it's sad that a satellite hobbyist knows what's going on much more than a network affiliate does. Maybe they don't read their internal memos from CBS.

KRQE has a very bad habit of the engineers not being on the ball in switching to HD after playing their local commercials in SD. I can't tell you how many times I had to call them to tell them to switch to HD. Too many. They just don't get it or they just don't care.

I found out on FCC's datatbase showing KRQE-DT's is filing the flash cut to digital for the relay station in Wagon Mound K06BN channel 6 at 7 watts erp!! :eek: :eek: :eek:

I bet 10 to 1 there will be a pissed off ranchers during the TV skip season "May to August" but then again they may be using Big dish or FTA,Directv and Dish network.

Why waste time and money on VHF low band for relaying the KRQE-DT's signal? :rolleyes:

At least TV DXers will try to pull in the flea power during the TV skip season! :D

A bummed out Dish HD subscriber here. I want to see the Masters in a couple of weeks, but still no KRQE CBS on my HD locals, and no local OTA's in Farmington. Has anyone heard anything more on this issue. It has been quiet. Are they even talking.

I.m new to HDTV with a Sony KDF-E42A10 projection LCD. I currently have Comcast Silver Package digital non HD, with Comcast Internet as well. I am trying to decide how to pick up some HD for the new TV. Comcast upgrade to HD does not appear to be the answer. Switching to Sat TV - maybe, but would need to change to a new high speed ISP as well.

From research on the net and this forum, it appears adding a over the air antenna may work. I am in Zip 87112, near Juan Tabo and Menaul, 8.1 miles from the Sandia Crest antenna farm, direct line of sight, 3 walls total (including exterior)in the house between TV and the line of sight. I don't have a attic, have a single home 1 story.

I am thinking of trying the Radio Shack indoor amplified 15-1880


Any comments or advice for a newbie?

Welcome to HDTV and the Alb. forum...No ota where I am at, but have Dishnetwork and 3 of the 4 major nets in HD from Satellite...

You should get great reception where you are...a rooftop antenna is best, or a Zenith silver sensor is highly recommended on this site.

I'm close to Candelaria and Chelwood, in your neck of the woods. I have a rooftop RS VU90 aimed at the Crest and it works great, probably overkill. Their cheaper UHF only ant. would work as well or better. I also have a setup in the computer room with a Silver Sensor and it works fine except for the low power PBS ch. 9 stuff. I've have Comcast internet for $30+TTL. (As the car dealers say title, tax, license.)

I switched from using Earthlink (got to close that now-restricted account) to Comcast and except for a few outages it has been good. Had them for TV before I got Dish in June 02 or earlier but what do I know--I own a 921 with 49-mile LOS of the Crest.

BTW, AFAIK our local Comcast has digital channels but not HD--or they sure keep quiet about it.

Albuquerque Comcrap has some HDTV and some HIGH DEFINITION channels according to their CSRs I spoke to yesterday. I couldnt recommend Comcrap if someone held a gun to my head.

Yesterday after getting my bill I called comcrap to try and reduce the ammount. The rep I talked to even verified with a manager that I could switch to just the standard cable package and still keep access to the HD channels and DVR. I got home and turned the TV on to find a message on screen saying DVR not authorized for use. I promptly called back.

The CSR I spoke with apologized for the earlier CSR's mistake that I do in fact need to keep digital cable package for the DVR. I politely asked for a supervisor. This happened at 7pm when Smallville came on (which I was watching OTA). When the supervisor came on I explained how comcrap makes me sick considering my TV service bill is $75 a month. Considering Im on an Antenna for any CBS or WB shows as it is Im greatly paying too much and wanted to reduce my bill. She tried to tell me I shouldnt have to since CBS and WB is offered. I explained that I do not watch any Analog broadcast television thats available in HD and that I was going to call Dish if she didnt offer me anything for free.

The brightside is I have HBO for free for 6 months. But Now Im missing InHD and InHD2. Those retards at comcrap cant do anything right. If only there was an inexpensive HD DVR that isnt tied to Cable or Satellite.

Go with DISH or Directv or stay with OTA. Comcast Internet is the only part of comcast that is oriented to providing top service to its customers.

There is an HD DVR made by Sony that is discontinued, but can still be purchased on ebay. You might still find it in some electronics stores. I own a Sony DHG-HDD500 which can be used OTA only and holds over 60 hours of HD content. Mine has worked great for the 6 months I've owned it.

It uses a free TV Guide which is broadcast locally. You can use it with cable if you want to (just add a cablecard), but it cannot record satellite. Note: Some users have reported problems getting it to work properly with cable according to a thread I've been reading on AVS. You should be able to get one off ebay for less than $600 or you could buy a Sony DHG-HDD250 which has less storage for a lower price.

The discontinued LG3410a will also do what you want and you might find one used. It has many aggravating quirks but will get the job done. Rumor is that the Tivo Series III will be out this year sometime, I hope. JR

Anyway, in good news, I finally got my 622 receiver the other day. Does anyone know why I'm not getting 13? Is it my antenna (or lack thereof) or, before I do anything big, is it simply because of 13 not playing well with cable/satellite? I didn't seem to pick it up the first run through, but I really haven't worried since I don't care that much and don't want to spend lots of time if I can't get it anyway. Besides, right now, I'm too busy watching old UFO reruns in HD, quite possibly the most "fab" TV program ever :)

My point that I'm going to bring up in the letter is that leasing excess digital bandwidth to USDTV is not in the public interest. I would rather see KOAT air ABC News Now (ABC's 24 hour news television service) or at least put up weather radar or city cameras using the excess bandwidth not taken up by their HDTV service.

I'm up for that. I took a class in college on FCC stuff and I can't for the life of me conceive of how they're getting away with this crap. They're selling bandwidth that they don't own!!! It's *our* bandwidth legally. The FCC is useless.

Is it my antenna (or lack thereof) or, before I do anything big, is it simply because of 13 not playing well with cable/satellite? I didn't seem to pick it up the first run through, but I really haven't worried since I don't care that much and don't want to spend lots of time if I can't get it anyway. Besides, right now, I'm too busy watching old UFO reruns in HD, quite possibly the most "fab" TV program ever :)Right now Krqe is not co-operating and putting it up on Satellite...Btw... I think the new owners might keep THE TUBE. I don't think it's very likely we'd see weather radar or city cams (since KASA farms out their newscast to KOB to save money on having to start/staff their own news division).

KOAT hasn't filed for renewal yet on the license front (ditto KASY, also up for renewal in october and I'll be filing a comment there too since UPN broadcasts some shows in HD but KASY doesn't have the bandwidth to pass it through in HD). Once those two stations file for renewal, then I'll submit my comment and hopefully you guys will too and we'll see how seriously the FCC takes things when pondering license renewal.

btw, I really have no problem leasing some available bandwidth for commercial pay services as long as priorities are taken care of first. What I have a problem with is the alternates available that are more in the public interest than leasing excess bandwidth.

For KOAT, it'd be more in the interest of the public to give ABC News Now, weather radar, or traffic cams more priority over selling plenty of available bandwidth. If KOAT wanted to, they could have their HD signal, ABC NN, and weather and traffic cameras all in the same digital multiplex and have a signal totally in the public interest.

For KASY, it's providing HD to the public that should be a priority and in the interest of the public. When UPN makes a program available to affiliates in HD, KASY should transmit it to us in HD (not just SD versions 24/7/365 of their programming and leasing about 2/3 of their bandwidth to USDTV.)

Also consider the fact that there is *plenty* of HD bandwidth still unused. They are leasing away the bandwidth they have rather than have USDTV simply do the right thing and apply to the FCC for some channel allocations. But that would cost them more because they'd have equipment cost. So they're being parasitic rather than going for available, unused bandwidth. THAT is annoying.

actually, here's the update, since you reminded me, I just typed in 0013 and it popped right up. Off an FM antenna too :) Seems that, since KRQE isn't cooperating, they don't bother to provide the data for the channel. Dumbasses (KRQE). The FCC needs to just explain to these companies that they're there to provide programming, not to get into petty battles over it.

All this talk of KRQE not playing nicely with Cable and Satellite providers makes me wonder something. Why is it, according to last time I checked, CableOne has CBS-HD but not NBC-HD. And why is it that Comcrap has NBC-HD and not CBS-HD. As a recent immigrant from San Diego I guess I took for granted that the cable companies carried all the major networks. But in ABQ I really can't accept placing blame on KRQE when it seems neither Cable operator in the area really gives a damn about HD and service to their subscribers.

it's probably called greed. KRQE is probably asking for an unreasonable cash amount for DISH to carry their HD signal.

If greed is the case, you'd think KRQE's goodwill and eyeballs to watch the loser newscasts would be good enough to have just by asking for a reasonable cash retrans consent fee.

I guess having network affiliations hurts local stations from wanting to carry some games on free TV. If that is the case, it is lame as many free-tv MLB rightsholders are WB/UPN affiliates so most of the games on the schedule is carried during weekends rather than weeknights.

Rockies have 20 games on KTVD in 2006 (so not worth having). Diamondbacks KTVK has 75 games (but their network is only composed of a station in Tucson and in Las Vegas, NV in addition to the flagship in phoenix). In a more perfect world, I could easily see KASY or KWBQ signing up for about 25-30 Dbacks games in 2006 (filling in time on weekends).

Marlins are not an option becuase they eliminated the free-tv network this past offseason (going cable exclusive on Fox sports net florda/sun sport with 150 telecasts in 2006).

Well after living in a Major league team city all my life, (brewers, Angels, Padres), Ive taken for granted having the option to drive down the street to the stadium or flip on the tube.

In San Diego I lived accross the street from Qualcomm where Padres used to play and could go to a game simply by crossing the street, and at the new Petco Park the Padres have Cox Communications has a local only cable station that has EVERY home game in HD and most away games as well. This was the sharpest HD picture Ive seen for a baseball game putting ESPN and FSN to shame.

Now Im stuck on ESPN and InHD for my Random MLB game in HD. Why not have one of the local stations cover the Isotopes in HD. Are they Isotopes even covered on TV?

with comcast as a sponsor of the isoptes, i'm surprised you don't see about 10-15 topes games on comcast channel 72 (or whatever it is nowdays).

Good news, Altitude Sports and Entertainment will carry 2 Isotopes games against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in 2006.

COX Louisiana will have one Isotopes/New Orleans Zephyrs matchup.

All 3 games available on a Ku-band dish (or the 2 Altitude games over DBS that carries ASE).

I've been using the service since 7/2004 and it works good for me. I like the service and the cost. The boxes are very nice, especially considering I got them for $20 each at Walmart. I know many here hate what they do, but for me the provide a service that fits my lifestyle and budget.

I have two receivers, one on my HD and one on an analog in the bedroom. I record TV on DVD-RAM on a Toshiba machine with a built-in tuner, no recording of HD (which I don't like). So I don't record directly from the USDTV box, I just split the antenna feed. I doubt they would ever support 1394 on their boxes, but who knows. So my total bill is around $26, which from what I've seen is much cheaper than cable and you don't have to support the cable monopoly. From what I've heard, the box will work without the subsrciption, you just wouldn't get the programming they run, you could definately use it as a HD converter box with component out and optical audo out.

Does anybody know why Family Guy is in widescreen, but then Fox actually masks the widescreen? They don't cover the top few pixels so you can see that there is more info there. Why the heck would they do that?

The xbr1 has an ATSC tuner built in so you shouldn't need an external receiver.

Minor News update........

Analog channel 38 is on the air after amost year, being off the air on the old channel 17.

The KAZQ-DT took over the channel 17 at that time....

K38?? will be a 3ABN "Church programings" as of right now they are testing.

I think they are running at 46 KW ERP on the Sandia Crest TV tower site.

Good Old KOAT. Commander in Chief was supposed to be in HD and it wasn't. I called the station but nothing changed. In the future, we need to call the news telephone number and complain. Call KOAT at 884-6324 and ask for engineering. I wish our local stations would get their acts together.

I noticed that KOAT-DT (or ABC-HD) is very consistent in messing up all the firstgov.gov commercials. You'd think that after a month or two of doing the same mess-up everyday someone would fix the problem. "Your tax dollars at work." Many of their ABC promos get messed up also.

I encourage ALL of you to call KOAT at 884-6324 and complain every time you see KOAT screwing up. The more they get calls from us then they may take some action to fix the problem. Post that number by your TV. 884-6324. In fact, if KOAT keeps screwing up then I will start writing to their local advertisers complaining of their operation. If I start writing letters then I will post to you the letters with the advertisers addresses so you can also drop them a line. Voice your frustrations!!!

My signal strength on KRQE is down to about a third of normal and I missed recording the Thurs. night shows. Anyone else lose 13? These locals are really getting flaky. JR

Yes, I couldn't watch "Without A Trace" last night because there was no signal on the TVs digital tuner. On my E* 942, all I saw was green lines so there are definite problems on KRQE. Also, KOAT has been having a lot of audio dropouts and video pixilation for two or three days. Anyone know about the problems on KOAT?

OK, not sure why Commander wasn't HD (I don't watch it), though it's prolly cause of the fire crawl that had been running the whole day. I have to say I am curious as well.

Now as far as the firstgov.gov psa and other promos that are "screwed up" they aren't screwed up. Right now KOAT doesn't run local comm'ls on the HD side and ABC allows for an extra :30 during the evening. Prime starts at 6:59:30 and at one point they have to reset the HD delay by :30, thus the "screw-up". Nothing is lost or deleted, only repeated. If this wasn't done, there wouldn't be any CC until after this :30 aired...which is as late as 945p some nights. And just FYI: ABC doesn't send any CC on HD programs nor is it required to...yet. KOAT and the other stations must pass their analog captions over to HD.

^the drop-outs may be due to the fact that they are running at about 35% power right now. A power supply in one of the 2 amplifier cabinets at the transmitter blew out last weekend. I may be wrong, but this could be the issue.

There are possibility they have to cut back the transment power, so the people can work on the TV tower may be related to lowpower station channel 38, going on the air for the first time.

And since the weather has gotton better on the Sandia Crest and they may be more TV engineering peoples to clean up and fine tune and same goes for FM radio broadcast stations and two way radio repeaters "Ham Radio,Taxi Cab, and bunch of other users out there" :)

So that's means spring cleaning season has started. :D

thanks to jerrich i am now on this great forum. i am in albuq with comcrap with an s/a 8300hd box. i am moving from pinnacle in high desert apt to my fiancee' house and would like to go back to dish but dish does not have cbs or PBS (knme) in hd. i really don't care too much if cbs is not on the idsh but not to carry knme is a deal breaker for me. comcrap is terrible but they have knme hd as we all know. comcrap does not have cbs hd also so this is a wash. my question is why no knme on dish? knme is the best hd channel i think. yes i probably could get knme with an antenna at paseo and barstow but with dish you would not be able to record any knme programs. i have looked at the "new" dish hd channels and they are pretty good but knme is important to me. since knme is a public channel it can't be a money problem to get it on dish. any help in explaining when knme would come on dish would be appreciated. jack

If you are getting a Dish DVR, I'm pretty sure the Dish DVR's have terrestrial tuners, no? If they do, then you could record KNME on the Dish DVR using the antenna at your house.

Yes, I'm pretty sure it shows up in the guide...I had a Dish a long time ago, and the local channels, that I received thru a rooftop antenna, showed up in the guide.

Does InHD have their own score bug graphic on those broadcasts?

KNME (or PBS) has two separate broadcasts for SD and HD. The E* 622 (as well as other receivers) will display the SD guide information but will not display the HD broadcasts. The guide only shows "Digital Service" for the KNME HD broadcasts. If you know what you want to watch (by looking for the information on the internet for example) you should be able to set manual timers to record programming via the DVR for the HD programs.

Curious. Is KOAT-DT asleep again and broadcasting "Ten Comandments" (1956) in SD? I'm sure the original must have had higher definition.

I have a Dish network 921 that I started using in January 2005. When I realized that guide information was not available for KNME-HD, I sent Dish an email over a year ago. Nothing has happened since then, so base your decision on the assumption that Dish will never provide guide data.

lujan is correct that you can go online to get guide data, then manually program the Dish DVR to record it OTA. It isn't that difficult. You can look at the KNME-HD schedule for the next week, then program your DVR for the next week as you look at the guilde.

I solved this problem when I bought a second DVR, the Sony DHG-HDD500, for OTA recording. It has a free 8 day TV guide for KNME-HD and the other local channels. It is discontinued, but still available online.

Why does KRQE-13 have to be a pain about DD5.1 and HD on E*? I'd love to see a story in the ABQ Journal or a competing station about what each station's doing and their plans (sub channels, etc.). Hopefully, with more exposure KRQE may get on the ball.

hmmm, all I'm still getting (and it's been this way for awhile) is KAZQ on 32-1 and Miracle Channel (from Canada) on 32-2.

Pretty much everywhere else they are... perhaps if KRQE doesn't want to play they could add the new CW after WB and UPN merge... or offer PBS in HD if KRQE stays out of the game...(would be nice if they would substitute the Denver CBS for KRQE also but the spotbeam probably wouldn't serve most of NM, and Shivera would prevent that also)

lujan: thanks for the news that dish is not going to carry knme-hd as it is not a "local" i guess. what a shame as their hd signal is seems the best of any "local". the pain of looking up a knme-hd program on the net and then setting a manual timer is just too much trouble i think even for me. my fiancee could (or would) never do this!! i guess i will stay with comcrap at her house like i have at my apt. i hate the s/a8300hd box but it does have knme-hd (no cbs of course). maybe sometime dish will get it together and supply a quality hd channel. perhaps d* might do it before dish and i could go d*? the dish hd dvr is getting lousy reviews also so maybe comcrap is the best alternative at this point. again thanks for the advice. i saved some grief in not changing at this time. i would have been mad at dish if i changed and never recieved knme-hd.

As I see it, Dish is planning only the "big-4" because they will use spotbeams with 4 MPEG-4-channel capability. Exceptions being some NY and possibly LA in MPEG-2 or that with -4 headers. BTW, broad spotbeams for NM, nearly covering all of it.

I suggested a national PBS HD channel for Dish more than a year ago. Our KMNE like many others just puts up the same signal--East Coast, I presume. Is there a West Coast delayed one? A single programming slate or guide could be used by many locales. There is no need to send every copy of the PBS-HD channel as they have no local content. (Same might apply to the Tube and some other subchannels.)

While they are at it, it would be nice to have the guide for the four digital subchannels of KNMD-9, otherwise who is going to look at them. The KNME magazine "Ventana" is not much help there.

It's been suggested that we boycott all the new hd players due to the draconian copy protection systems they carry, like no hd over component, etc. That leaves the majority of early hd tv owners out in the cold. There is an extensive discussion on the fair use laws that we will be losing, over on the Spot. JR

There is only that one PBS HD Channel (no west feed, no other alternate feed).

as for KNMD, there is a channel guide available at pbs.org for those (you have to go to the schedules area and pretend you are watching PBS on C-band backyard dish or from DirecTV/DISH):

I wonder if I am doing something incorrectly here. I have a Samsung tv with built in HD tuner. I'm passing this via digital coax into my home theater receiver, but what I'm getting seems to be 2.0 channel sound.

Actually, almost all the local HD broadcasts have DD 5.1 except for KRQE. KRQE does not pass the network DD 5.1 and only gives us stereo. KWBQ, KOB and KOAT all pass the network DD 5.1 to us.

At least due to the fact the satellite transmission format for the HD locals are different than for the regular services, a H20 DirecTV receiver will be needed as well as DirecTV's dish that has Ka-band reception capability.

Then, I imagine those of us with the HR10-250's will be getting our replacement receivers by then. In a perfect world.

Don't be so sure about the channel count. There is a thread at AVS where a poster said that not every city gets every channel due ti contractual disputes.

KOB has been solid here. I've recorded half a dozen shows over the past two weeks (West Wing, Leno, etc.) and have not seen any dropouts.

Alias went to hell in a hand basket as well. My wife was watching it from our HDTivo recording, and I looked up to see it was in SD. WTF? Then it was back to HD. Then with about 10 minutes or so left in the program, the center channel feed dropped out! Oh well...we never really need to hear what the lead characters are saying, right?

KRQE is strong and reliable up here in Espanola. I always get a solid lock with no dropouts at all. KRQE, KOB and KWBQ are all very strong. I can't get a lock on KNME with my current antenna (dunno why) and KOAT is pretty good. I get a lock on KOAT about 95% of the time - there are occasional dropouts. The E* 622 receiver has a better OTA tuner than the 921 had, and now E* is delivering KOB and KOAT (and KASA) via satellite in HD as well, so with three tuners in the 622, there are lots of options for recording everything. When the engineer at master control at KOAT forgets to 'throw the switch' for the HD network feed, I just call engineering and a minute later they're in HD. Maybe in a while they'll get in the habit of remembering to do it. This DTV stuff is still in the nascent stages anyway. I suspect it won't be routine for 2 or 3 more years.

Problem for those of us--most of us?--in DVRland is we don't know there's a problem with the signal until it's too late to call.

Yeah, you're right. I've only been able to call in for sporting events when I'm watching live or near live. But every time, they've flipped the switch within a minute. At least they're picking up the phone and listening. I guess we need to keep training them. I spoke to the Chief engineer at KOAT about this as well.

i guess it depends how important KRQE is to them (if it's important enough to be the only satellite provider for KRQE-HD that they'd pony up enough cash to carry KRQE HD).

I personally feel both dbs system should pull KRQE SD off their systems (then KRQE will lose eyeballs for LOSER NEWS 13 and lose money from less eyeballs watching their programming). Maybe KRQE would get the point that having more eyeballs is a plus and work to a fair agreement to get SD and HD versions up on the DBS birds.

I would imagine KRQE would send their HD signal to the LIL receive facility for transmssion back to DirecTV's uplink (the HD gets muxed with the SD at the LIL facility and then down some DS-3 or whatever lines to DirecTV).

Since Comcast is only distributing our SD locals around the state, you can't find a copy of KRQE-HD on Comcast's signal on satellite.

Just frustrated, lately. Got in the habit of watching a couple of network show via KRQE-HD over the last year. Now, it seems that every week or so, I get a couple days in a row of fluctuating weak signal.

All the other Abq locals are solid -- as far as signal goes. Not commenting on other aspects. :)

On E* I see very frequent large areas of green flashing and odd pixelations with no audio problems for KOAT. That's in addition to the new audio problems of the last couple of weeks.

Are these manifesting via OTA as well?

Also noting a lot of 20pt variations in OTA signal strength for KRQE-HD, that wasn't there before either.

I think I've seen the same thing OTA...not sure, I'll have to check in future..(I switch back and forth between OTA and Sat on recordings a lot.)

As far I know, KRQE-DT is running at 75 KW ERP so this station is not as powerfull as like KASA-DT,KOB-DT,KNME-DT and KOAT-DT which runs more than 200 KW ERP. :)

So that's maybe that's why you guys have trouble getting KRQE-DT and as for me I sometime have to ajust the indoor antenna just to get this channel or just go to LA KCBS-DT on Directv. :D

As for KOB-DT any news, on what to do with their ever wastfull sub channel 4.2 or as we say in the real channel 26.2? :p

RE: KOAT's recent HD-issues
they are in the process of changing over to automation and there are still some kinks to work out. Having said that, Wed was a dfifficult day to watch their HD shows.

So in summation, ABQ is fortunate enough to have a CBS affiliate who won't share with cable or satellite and has a wavering OTA signal, and a shaky ABC HD source.

I'm feelin' good about this! I figured being 5 miles straight line from the antenna would help, darn it.

Also noticed KOAT was shaky last night on sat too. Hope the project is concluded soon!

They should have just waited until the new shows in prime time are over and then started the project when every thing on is a re-run. That's coming up very soon...

since moving from academy and tramway to paseo del norte and barstow do not get kob or knme hd signals on my rabbit ears easily. i got all local hd channels up there in high desert. i think i could fool around and get them but feel not worth the trouble. the good news is i do get krqe-hd on the rabbit ears. since comcast does not carry krqe but does carry knme i get all ota channels. i can't record krqe in hd but csi is the only program my fiancee wants to watch anyway and seeing commercials is still unpleasant. oh well maybe dish will come to their senses and put knme hd up and i would switch to dish.

As far as KRQE I continued to see center channel drop outs and large green areas of some funky pixelation last night. I haven't watched all the shows yet, so don't have an exact count. This has been going on for several weeks for me at least, although the sound issue is new.

I spoke with the KRQE general manager a couple of weeks ago and he said the digital satellite feed should be up soon, but "soon" is a very relative term. It has now been 3 months since the other three were put up and we're still waiting on KRQE.

You can get very basic cable for $10 so you do not have to pay the $15 extra. So it will save you $5 to keep that than to completely cancel Comcast. That is what I did last month when I got DirecTV.

I was watching on a Sony trinitron with a built-in tuner and a roof mounted antenna and saw only brief minor breakups. Nothing lasting more than a second or two, and even then the audio stayed clean. Could there be an issue with Dishnet HD and not KOAT?

I try to stay away from the new Dish digital locals on satellite because they have a lot of problems. I use the OTA locals as much as possible. I only use the Dish digital locals when I need to record one while watching another HD local program.

I recorded Everwood last night on my Dish 622 from KWBQ OTA and then got home late and watched it only to find that there was no audio at all and no CC either for the frst 40 minutes of the show and then the audio came back for the last 20 minutes. Ugh. Made that unwatchable. Same thing last Tuesday on Gilmore Girls - no audio for the first 15 minutes, then suddenly the audio came back.

You guys could be right...it may be Dish. I've rearranged my timers so that OTA has priority for favorite shows.

Anything I have to watch or record on Sat HD locals I back up with Sat SD recording...Still getting used to the new unit.

I had a strange event occur last week. I recorded Will and Grace on the E* digital local station (6326) on the 622/1000 and when it came time to watch it, the video was frozen. The only time I could get the video to move was when I clicked on the FF button, but of course, there was no audio. The show was unwatchable. I will have to start backing up some shows on the SD stations like others are doing. These new Mpeg4 stations have some major issues and I can't tell whether it's E* or the stations themselves.

That's the difference. Those of us having problems are using the 1000 for 129.

So how do you prove to Dish that it is their problem. The best people I've know have gotten has been a visit from a tech to re-aim and possibly a credit.

This is absolutely Dish's problem! You've got to insist and be firm about it. They tell the techs that if they can get a signal strength of 60 on 129, the install is good. But for most people with the Dish 1000 I'm seeing signal strengths of 55-62 across the transponders on 129 (check your "point dish" setup screen.) That doesn't cut it. In New Mexico, the Dish 1000 can't pull enough signal off 129 to be reliable under all atmospheric conditions. 129 is an old bird and it's lower power than the others (don't ask me why Dish put it's top-of-the-line HD programming on an older bird, I don't know.) The ABQ HD locals are on transponder 27.

To reliably get HD off 129 you need a dedicated Dish 500 dish or even a 30" Winegard dish (about $70 - Dish will not pay for that, but the installer will install it.) With a Dish 500, I'm getting 72-76 signal strengths off 129 and with a 30" Winegard DBS dish, you can get 85-92 signals strengths off 129.

The bottom line... a Dish 1000 works okay at some locations in the US, but it's marginal here in New Mexico and you will see the type of picture breakup Moonhawk describes.

My 622 (x2) install is scheduled for 5/29 (Memorial day) I insisted on adding a second Dish 500 for 129, keeping my 61.5 dish as well and tieing them all together with a DPP44 switch. Took a small bit of wrangling with the CSR but that's whats now on the work order. No additional charge either. If the installer shows up with a Dish 1000 and no DPP44 I will send him packing.

Some of the new HD locals just added are going up on 110/119 (lucky stiffs!)

Yep, that's exactly what I did. Three dishes, four orbital locations and a DPP44 switch. Works perfectly and Dish paid for everything including the DPP44 switch. Call the dispatch office before 7 AM on the day of your installation and make SURE the switch is on the truck!

Sorry I've been awat from the computer..Yes, I have a dish 1000...I'll check the signal strength as suggested. My main problem has been with KOAT...there is a thread on DBS talk where folks from all parts of the country are having the same problem with ABC afilliates and 622's.

I'm going to wait for the new larger Dish 1000.2 to come out in June before I order my 622 upgrade. I assume this new Dish will fix the problem with 129.

No problems tonight with ABC....I recorded all 3 hrs OTA...so at least I have a good workaround.

I haven't had any problems yet with other channels on Dish feed of HD locals.

I am visiting the Tampa area currently. I saw very strange artifacts on ABC during Gray's Anatomy last week. This was on the Tampa MPEG-4 HD feed on DirecTV with the 5 LNB dish and the H20 receiver. So it is not just a Dish Network problem and it points to a problem with the ABC national feed. Or maybe Dish Network and DirecTV use the same MPEG-4 encoders. :)

I get this occasionally on KOAT (on my 622) but only on the new Mpeg4 digital station on satellite (6324) and not only when there is a news crawl but at all times.

I have noticed it during an HD display. They have to go back to SD to do the crawl. I have also noticed that on KOB, I sometimes don't have video at all, just audio and the only correction is a front panel reset. Is everybody that is experiencing this using a E* 622 receiver? I would suggest that those of you that do have an E* receiver contact dishquality@echostar.com about this problem. The more emails they get about it, the quicker they'll fix it.

Definately the KOAT problem I get as well, although I don't need a crawl to cause it. Usually anything good to watch like Lost or Grey's triggers it LOL

The chief engineer at KOAT told me that they have to switch to SD to do news crawls. Their equipment won't do crawls on HD. What I've seen so far of KOAT HD has been clean here both on sat and OTA.

Are you seeing it on the OTA signal as well?

It seems to be ABC specific as well, as there is a thread at DBSTalk on the subject...

One thing we have not established on this bug... I am component only, how many of you that have this problem are component only or are on hdmi or dvi...?

Hey everyone just a little update from a few pages back.....I am now able to receive 5.1 audio using a Samsung TV with built in OTA HD tuner. I have another newbie question as well. Is there a stand alone DVR on the market that is able to record OTA HD broadcasts? I don't use comcast or satellite service I just pull in the local OTA Albuquerque broadcasts but would really like to add a DVR. Thanks for all your help!

Sony made one for awhile but they were VERY pricey.

Your better off buying something that interfaces with your computer. PCI card etc. or EyeTV if your on a Mac.
