With Dish I would be using the rabbit ears just as I am now for OTA channels. If I have to use rabbit ears I may as well pay the company that offers me the most aside from whats OTA.

I don't Blame LINTV for asking for repayment within the rules of law. I blame comcrap for being willing to raise our rates and rake us over the coals while refusing to pay up for one of the locals. Comcrap still refuses to carry KWBQ-DT which doesn't seem to require repayment. I even had a Comcrap CSR accuse me of stealing cable when I called to report that I was watching Showtime Ondemands Skinfest which is NOT encrypted while using the QAM tuner in my TV. "Its Against the law to get Free HDTV sir. You have to use the STB"

Well, it looks like no OTA for me. I borrowed a friend's Channel Master 4228 with a preamp, and I couldn't pick up anything. My house is just too low to get any signals. This makes me more anxious for E* and LIN to come to an agreement about KRQE HD. I was hoping I'd get to see some Broncos football in HD. I suppose a few games will be in HD on Fox, NBC, ESPN and on Thanksgiving, the NFL Network...

Frustrating.

Too bad we just can't choose to subscribe to whatever CBS network we want to receive. It'd be cool to get Denver's CBS. Even if I was able to get the east/west CBS, I doubt those stations would be broadcasting Broncos games.

So has anyone seen any sports bars installing HDTVs? I suppose it's too early to expect businesses to upgrade.

It's definately nice to have the option of OTA to pick up the slack where our paid TV services fail to provide adequate services for our monthly fees. Cough Comcrap D* and E*. Thank you Cable One for stepping up for your customers and carrying CBS-HD.

Now these providers are going to need to get on ball and offer CW-HD next month. Although I hear D* is going to offer CW. Too bad they dont have near the ammount of hd as Dish.

the universal complaint for dish is no pbs-hd and no cbs-hd. now we got cable one ( are they rio rancho?) carrying cbs-hd so why not comcast? as soon as comcast or direct or dish carries both pbs-hd and cbs-hd they got a subscriber!!! give us more HD locals or more HD programming!!! at least comcrap carries pbs-hd. still can't see why dish does not leap frog and carry both pbs-hd and cbs-hd. i know they are always saying that they are trying to keep cost of their service low but not carrying existing hd signals and carrying shopping channels does not make sense in my opinion.

Whats worse is ComCrap moved NFL channel to Channel 53 or something. Now its down in the Analog channels as well as in the digital tier. this is Gobbling up so much of their precious bandwitch that they could use for more HD.

Unfortunately, I'm in a no OTA *and* no cable area. So satellite is my only choice. I went with E*, and for the most part I like them. I've had E* for the past 10 years. I suppose they will eventually get KRQE-DT. I'm just impatient.

In a few years all stations must be converted to HD, right? Does the requirement include Nick, MTV, Comedy Central, CNN, etc... i.e. ALL TV channels provided by cable/sat must be in HD by the deadline?

There is no such mandate.

All OTA stations must convert to digital broadcasting, but there is no such HD requirement. SD digital (480i) meets the requirement.

And there is no requirement for any non-broadcast station to do anything.

Yeah, that's right. Analog broadcasts will cease on Feb 17, 09. I'm just wondering if the cable/satellite providers have any requirements regarding the whole ATSC/NTSC, HD/SD changeover, and if the Feb 17 date applies to channels such as CNN, MTV, etc...

OK. I think I understand. So the requirement is that OTA broadcast stations must broadcast ATSC (at any resolution they choose). Cable/Satellite are not affected.

I HATE Tivo. I have always hated Tivo. If they cause me to not have a DVR, I will never ever ever buy anything with a Tivo in in, if I have to figure a way around it myself. I don't care if Echostar has to pay, but if they get my DVR shut down, I'm going to be on the phone with Tivo and it won't be pretty.

John,

I definitely think you are I are wired differently :)

In my case, with D* eventually severing their ties with Tivo, they will lose me as a customer.

Personally, if E* were smart, they would make nice with Tivo, do an E*/Tivo DVR, and take away all the disgruntled customers that D* is risking by developing their own DVR. With Tivo, once under their spell, the force is strong....... :)

If/when D* pulls the plug on my Tivo's, I will look long and hard at the rumored Comcast/Tivo DVR, and/or the Series 3 Tivo that in theory will work with cable cards.

Of all my HT gear, the only thing that would get me sleeping in the dog house would be if I got rid of Tivo. I have to say, I have been drinking Tivo's Kool-Aid for quite a few years, and consider it the single best piece of gear in my rack.

So what's the deal, are you a Replay guy?

Nah, I just hate the stupid cartoonish graphics and "bleep, blorp" sounds. I don't want to be entertained by my GUI! Once I got my Dish DVR, it was just nice to have something that was all business. No dancing TV with arms and legs. No "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" button! Besides, Tivo screwed a customer of mine for several $hundred and I don't much like that. They refused to resolve it. Funny how they run to the courts when they get screwed. It would be karma for Dish to put them out of business. If it comes down to it, I'll build a computer to do it. I'd love to see them out of business, even though the DVR is the best idea ever. But it would have come from someone else. They just thought of it more quickly.

They only have to be Digital if they are broadcasted. CNN MTV and such are not broadcasted. These are carried by Cable or Satellite and merely provide content and let someone else worry about transmission. So come 2009 when all broadcasts, that which you get with a pair of rabbit ears, will be digital. While Comcrap cable will continue to over charge us for analog bullcrap while only providing a crows nuts worth of HD programmming. :)

I searched this thread and others, but found conflicting info.

A colleague just bought a Vizio L37HDTV10A. She has what I believe is called Comcast's basic package (no set-top box, but gets ESPN, History Channel, etc.). The Vizio has integrated NTSC and ATSC tuners with two coax "ANT" terminals, one labeled NTSC and one labeled DTV, which supposedly supports clear QAM digital cable. She hooked the TV up last night using the NTSC terminal and is now enjoying her "basic" cable in SD. My question is, can she get locals in HD with her current setup (e.g., by connecting the cable to the DTV input), or does she have to upgrade to a Comcast HDTV package (or get an antenna)? FWIW, she lives near UNM.

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm an OTAer with Dish and get lost in trying to figure out Comcast.

moonhawk
08-21-06, 05:11 PM
Don't know about Cable, but she'll get HD for FREE if she gets an antenna...and should get good reception i her location.

bigglare
08-21-06, 05:23 PM
If her TV has ATSC support on the DTV side, She can get ALL the locals free with antenna.

If her TV has QAM support on the DTV side, She can get the locals in HD that COMCRAP carries. IE NBC ABC Fox and PBS. But with QAM she can also get uncontrolled Ondemand movies and such since Comcast doesnt encrypt these. She will often find movies someone else is watching in the clear. Ocassionally it will fast forward or rewind. I often find the various soft Porn shows from Showtime's Ondemand selection playing. They occasionally get fast forwarded to the next Skin scene. But thats fine by me. hee hee.

But as long as all she wants is the local networks in HD and not TNT ESPNs Discovery or InHD she wont need to pay comcrap anymore than she is now. Oh I forgot MHD and Universal HD which is now live on comcrap. But they took out InHD2.

Will the Mountain be carried on Dish--or DirectTV for that matter?

If not, how do those of us with no access to cable watch the Lobos?

I'd be really bummed if that's the case, even if they're only SD.

How about trying a getting a FTA KU band dish with a motor and get the Lobos feeds?

But the odd of finding them, are 50-50 since the most FTA receivers can only get MPEG 2 with 4:2:0 or analog FM video feeds. :)

Since my receiver can't get MPEG 2 or 4 by sending in 4:2:2 format.

Or you can get Big Useful Dish 6 foot or more that way you can get both bands C and KU.

I wish I have the room for the big dish in my yard, but I have to settle for 3 foot KU band dish with my Directv dish on the roof.

So we will see whats happen next this new season weather we can get it on Directv or Dish network or our local stations can carry the Lobos feed or not.

There is a good website that's sell FTA dish...... www.satelliteguys.us and click on FTA Sadoun satellite sales or Fortec Star, they will give you neat informations and my local satellite installer is very good at FTA as well too, his website are located at www.hometown.aol.com/nmsatelitteman/myhomepage/business.html from what I remembered, he's charge $45 an hours for a new FTA satellite install. :)

"Edit for some reason the link to NMsatelliteman not working right"

I get about 30 to 40 satellites going from 148*west to 61* west and it's feel like a kid again playing with the shortwave radio! :D

Once you got the baby going, you will have tons of fun TV DXings!! :)

PBS-HD is what you want if MHD is too hip for you. they air concerts where noone in the crowd is younger than 45. I would watch more PBS-HD if they actually had bands/singers that are currently in vogue. Maybe in a decade I'll be at that age where PBS-HD has good concerts (I'm 35).

the laws are going to have to be rewritten to accomplish that (as PBS would have to go to a commercial service, not the way they do things now with commercials masquerading as sponsorship messages, other types of sponsor announcements and pledge drives.

I personally would not have a problem with PBS if they were allowed to air shows commercial-free and then have 5 minutes of commercials per hour in one confined segment of time at the end of a show (for a one hour show, having ads from xx:55:00 to xx:00:00), or for a 30 min shows back-to-back in one hours' time running ads at xx:27:30 to xx:30:00 and again at xx:57:30 to xx:00:00). IMHO, the commercials should be able to pay for the programming (and costs per show should be reduced with CPB or other beneficiaries/trusts kicking in money for show production).

I have a Dish 921 HD PVR. I have never seen any program guide info for PBS-HD on dish network, even when I use the all channels program guide. You can pick up the local PBS-HD channel (KNME channel 5.1) OTA with any Dish HD receiver, but you will have to go online to get the program guide. You can then schedule a manual recording of the PBS HD channel with a Dish HD PVR, but it will not properly label the program or give any useful info about what you've recorded.

Recording the local CBS station (KRQE channel 13.1) OTA with a Dish HD PVR receiver is easy, because guide info is provided by Dish network as long as you subscribe to local channels. Hope this is the info you were looking for.

I'm from Farmington and we only have local KOB in HD and I think that is it. I wish we could get ALbq. OTA's. Dish locals are great but football season is fixing to start and CBS is part of the Sunday NFL package. As of right now they as sending in upconverted 1080i format as they are trying to install a HDTV satellite receiver from My Network TV and sidnycated feeds at this time....

Looking forward to this Star Trek in HDTV!! :) :) :)

N5XZS,

I heard that the Star Trek series was going to be remastered in HD but was wondering who was going to carry it here in ABQ. I can't believe our UPN station here (KASY) is finally upgrading its signal to full HD quality. I am still skeptical after all these years but I guess we will soon find out in September. Hope it happens.

Open note to KASY:

Turn off your scaler! It's not working (the cowboy games look like %^&*$).

at least the cowboy preseason is over.

thanks for having such a bad digital signal that I watched the game off satellite in glorious analog.

guruka: i don't think us folks in albuquerque can get the cbs-hd feed? i think it requires some kind of waiver that we can't obtain. anyone in albuq that gets cbs-hd somehow? still lack of pbs-hd is a deal breaker for me at this stage. the latest court case tivo vs. echostar puts dish in a tight spot for new subscribers as we don't know if the hd-dvr will be allowed to keep operating. i think dish or tivo will settle their differences but i hope it happens fast.Been in the UK for a couple of weeks. Back now. I was referring to KCBS and WCBS (L.A. and NYC CBS distants) in HD. If you are grandfathered with E* to receive the SD, you get the HD as well on channels 9482 and 9483. Luckily, I am in that category, so even though I get KRQE just fine OTA, I have the E* HD CBS feeds for backup.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Not USDTV plagued KASY!!!!!

I want to see these in full HD. Enterprise was hurt by UPN stations not being all HD. This Star Trek revitalization will be hurt if it goes to non-hd stations. Hopefully by some grace of God KASY will really show these in true HD but as long as USDTV is around I dont see how it will be possible.

I will be hooking up my Firewire to start recording the shows to my PC. Hopefully find a way to easily put the TS streams to hd-dvd or bluray

yes, make them turn off the scaler. that, combined with their small bandwidth for the signal, yields horrible results.

I'm sure the cowboy game the other night would have been somewhat better if they doubled the bandwidth from 4 to 8mbps.

I sent this to our KOB NBC station today (programming department):

I really enjoy watching Jay Leno in high-definition and really hate it when you insert your "Game Day" on Friday nights which causes you to NOT play Jay Leno in HD after the show (due to time shifting).

I have a suggestion. Please pass through your high-def version of Jay Leno uninterrupted by Game Day and only play your Game Day on your standard def channel. Since there is just a small minority of viewers on your digital channel right now there would not be any big ratings impact for you by not playing it on your digital channel. And most viewers that have HD if they really wanted to see Game Day they could watch it on their SD channel. Most viewers with HD also have SD channel availability. That way you could satisfy everyone.

Thanks, Fred Jerina.

I'm sure they have a video server and used it before (what else would they have done before NBC launched a MTN time zone HD feed on satellite? I bet they recorded the East/Central HD feed and played it out after the late news at Leno's normal time.)

I beleive even todays top shows are shot first on film and transfered to video. Just as with hogans heros on HDnet, you wont necessarily get a HIGH DEFINITION picture like say American Chopper or Trading Spaces on Discovery HD. This will still give us an incredibly clean picture on an HD set. Where the analog channels like G4 or Sci Fi looks grainy and such when displayed on an HD set, these will look much nicer. Along with the new Digital effects that will look equally stunning on big sets.

Im hoping that KASY is able to get their HD equipment online in time for Star Trek. Anyone know if they are ready for MyNetwork tonight? Im a tad curious about FashionHouse. Mogan Fairchild and Bo Derek, hmmmm. HAve they held up good after all these years? Enquiring minds want to know....

What Weather+Plus station are you dx'ing and watching?

From the Weather+Plus I've seen on 4.2, it's been mostly NM weather (graphics are dominantly new mexican - local weather conditins, 5 day forecasts for a lot of cities in NM, etc). NM radar about every 5 minutes or so. true there are national weather updates and occasional U.S. regional city 5 day on-screen graphic forecasts, but I'd have to say KOB's Weather+Plus feed is very New Mexican in nature from a radar and on-screen graphics point of view.

Does KOAT have video server capability? KOAT would have to record THE VIEW HD and later air it at it's normal local airing time for us to have any change of seeing THE VIEW HD from satellite.

I haven't been up early enough any day this week to check out THE VIEW in HD directly off the bird. Maybe it's a good thing after seeing how Rosie has done in her first week on THE VIEW.

Trek Revamp Will Not Air in HD
Show Gets HD Facelift, But No HD Distribution
Episodes of the original "Star Trek" series won't be available in high definition anytime soon, a delay that has all parties involved pointing fingers in different directions. bigglare

It's George W Bush's fault stupid. lol. Sorry hanging around UNM too much.

The delay isn't really anyone entity's fault, but rather the transition to HD as a whole.

These three are the Chicken-before-the-egg/If-you-build-it-they-will-come scenarios. No one makes HD show because not enough viewers, not enough viewers because not enough HD shows.- Networks slow converting all their programming to HD.
-Syndicators REALLY slow converting to HD.
-Local stations not stepping up to get the proper HD equipment to transition from Analog to Digital.

-Retailers for failing to properly warn/educate buyers of analog equipment.
Best Buy, walmart and other stores don't care if you buy an analog TV or video recorder that will be phased out in march. Infact they would hope you did..

-Consumers for not buying enough digital equipment.
-Digital owners for not seducing their friends into digital sooner.

-Consumer Electronic companies for continuing to make analog DVD-Recorders/VCRS/Televisions. Would it kill them to put an SDTV tuner in them before March 1 2007?-FCC for flip flopping over deadlines and cut offs.

I didn't watch it in HD tonight, but if it wasn't in HD, i'm betting on part rain, part sleeping operator.

NBC"s HD distribution comes down on Ku-band (prone to rain-fade). If it was raining hard enough at some point tonight, KOB could have lost their Ku-band HD signal (like the other week, when one of the preseason games went to heck as a heavy shower was over downtown and KOB had to switch to NBC's SD c-band not-prone-to-rainfade backup feed to get their NBC network feed).

I"m guessing KOB might have had to use the c-band feed tonight momentarily and an operator probably forgot to switch back to the HD feed when the shower passed.

i'm putting more of the blame on CBS Paramount. The same issue exists with JEOPARDY/WHEEL of DISASTER so they are using traditonal satellite feeds to deliver the HD versions to stations until the IP based content delivery system can be updated or fixed or whatever needs to be done to transmit HD IP files over satellite to stations' servers.

If King World can deliver HD syndicated shows to stations by alternate means until the IP-based content distribution system can be updated handle the content, why can't CBS Paramount?

The game never went to SD, but I had tons of breakup, including audio dropouts and the loss of digital audio, throughout the game. There were periods that the game was crisp and clean for sure, just that 1/2 the game wasn't.

Did it rain Thursday night? Don't think so. And since OTA was clear (I don't have OTA...dang I need to step up) I'm figuring it was cable's fault.

If I understand things right, the mountain feed for HD GMA still runs on delay, just like the SD feed. They didn't air the initial HD GMA feed because it was already 2 hours old. Where the SD is inly 1. I'm sure (ok not sure ) that the morning crew can "flip the switch" too. There has to be another reason. Keep pressing for the HD View...even though Rosie in HD, ughhh!

It's a good thing KRQE only has a game a season on the air this year (let "the mtn." handle getting complete broadcasts produced and aired).

I guess the college kids running the KRQE truck got too drunk in las cruces - the satellite feed left the air about the same time the lobos game left the free airwaves. It wasn't a downlink problem, it was a satellite uplink (or production truck, not sure) error.

I emailed KRQE to ask them when they would reair the lobos and aggies game in its entirety. They wrote back that they weren't. They didn't roll tape for awhile after the satellite feed went away and missed a lot of gameplay and audio was missing into the fourth quarter. They did apologogize for the technical difficulties.

btw, any work going on up there on the crest? KOB 4-0 was out for quite awhile in the overnight hours of saturday going into sunday (and 4-1 and 4-2 suffered sporadic outages too). 4-0 was still off the air when I went to bed. are we closer to getting 10-1 lit up from the crest and KOB had to power down or go off the air to protect workers?

Unfortunately, by all indications, CBS is only providing a SD version of the show. So the best we can hope for, at the moment, is an upconvert (a stretched one at that). Hopefully, that will change, but apparently there has been some miscommunication between CBS and the syndicating stations. I really hope they get this sorted out, I've heard of people buying plasmas and such because they thought it was going to be in HD.

Hello sthscan,

Where did you get the information on KCHF-DT channel 10.1 going full power on the crest?

Also can you do me a favor to see analog K56FB channel 56, is really on the air, since I was picking up a very weak signal here in Four Hills and not a false signal on my part.

Also what kind of programings whatever they are showing?

Will find out on the FCC's database on KCHF-DT. "btw their website is very sluggish after you put search on NM stations"

KCHF - I thought you posted at some point in this forum that KCHF would be moving their DT transmitter to the crest and go on the air from there.

as for K56FB, I am getting it fairly good but not perfect and it's airing Jewelry Television.

Hello sthscan,

Yes I did posted about on KCHF-DT going to the Sandia Crest, per say from Jim Gail of KNMD-DT was telling me at that time, But I was wondering if you had heard the latest news on them. :)

I finally got through the sluggish FCC's database website and still no news update on KCHF-DT so far however I just sent a e-mail to KCHF-DT but I am very doubtful if they ever will respond back about the digital transmitter's move to the Crest.

Church stations tends not to don't respond to anyones on e-mail, except for KAZQ-DT which is pretty rare for them to respond on e-mail from what I remembered.

Thanks for the information on K56FB channel 56 and it's a bummer they still showing homeshopping crap, they used to broadcast MTV2 in the mid 90's somewere about back then. :)

I thought they were moving to channel 39 but I guess they are footdragging on converting to digital or it's something else on other issues, they have to contend with.

who knows what's going on at that station that makes you think they're #1 at 10 because they've earned your trust (reality check: it's the powerhouse CBS 9pm show lead-in that makes them #1, not their on-air "talent").

maybe they are trying to be competitive in the morning with KOB and KOAT. I'd say who cares as I believe I read it's the 10pm news that brings in the ad revenue (so put all your good talent on at 10pm, not in the mornings when i'm not awake or others may be rushing off to work and getting the uncooperative kids ready for school and don't have much time to watch the news).

I'm not finding any news article saying NBC NIGHTLY NEWS is in HD (just tons of articles about the TODAY SHOW starting in HD, so maybe you are confusing the two shows).

I'm sure it's imminent that the NIGHT NEWS will be in HD, considering NBC built their HD control room to share among various shows in the Rock complex and that they are upgrading some of their significant news bureaus to deliver content in HD to reduce the number of times they have to use sidebars due to 4:3 material.

BTW, I watched Jeopardy tonight. I say it's not in HD (the commercials fit the whole screen and the show itself didn't seem very HD-like - the graphics not very crisp at all). I bet we have another stretch-o-vision going on (just like KASY's MNTV). Time to watch WHEEL and JEOPARDY off the bird and watch it in no-doubt-about-it HD glory.

As of right now only 2 Lobo football games will be available to Directv & Dish subs, since CSTV will carry just 2. The mountain west network is reporting that they are very close to a deal with Directv while talks with dish have been less promising. Lobo Basketball preliminary TV schedule just came out - 15 on the mtn. - MountainWest Sports Network, 3 on CSTV and 1 on ESPN2 (Jan 1 against Texas Tech and Bobby Knight).

Dec 5 Lobos/Aggies telecast rightsholder still be worked on - it's very likely KRQE will have that telecast to mess up but I'll give them extra credit points if they hire a HDTV production truck and do it in HD for us.

I must have been (un)lucky enough to have been watching it when they were doing the national weather (in other parts of the country). I only spent a few minutes on this station so I'll have to check again.

We are in the process of gearing up to add several presentations by our KOB weather staff to the WeatherPLUS feed you now have available on KOB 4.2 (26-2). This is a partnership with NBC so half of the time you will see their "national" presentation, and their commercials. ;)

Since this is a well read forum that caters to New Mexico HDTV afficianados, I would entertain any suggestions on how to make our NEW KOB WEATHER CHANNEL more "user friendly". Unfortunately the feed is only standard 4:3 screen ratio. :(

Some things I can think of (and I know some if not all may be impossible due to technology capability or the configuration of the WEATHER+PLUS system).

1) L-BAR (the bottom has rotating 5 day forecats, the left top has the rotating city conditions. Can the L-bar lower left below the Weather+PLUS logo and in-line with the forecast section of the L-bar be used to give additional information? I'm thinking a text overlay changing with info such as Sun Rise/Set times, Moon Rise/Set times, rotating NM city info with rainfall received today, this month, and this year, etc?

2) Is there ability on the upper part of the left hand L-BAR to add additional current condition info such as dew point and pressure? there seems to be enough room to add 2 or 3 more current condition items using the same size font as "Humidity" and "Winds" figures.

3) DopplerMax - I think I recall on the first night I tuned into 4-2 that DopplerMax live radar drop-ins would show the state as a whole, and then zoom in to various places around the state such as the various regions and even at one time zoomed into Albuquerque city-street level radar. Another night I watched, the radar drop-in seemed fixed the whole state without any zooming. Is the radar drop-in able to be automated to do the pattern of starting out with a statewide shot, then zoom in on each quadrant of NM and maybe finishing up with a street-level zoom in of Santa Fe and Albuquerque? Or is the radar view not automatable through interfacing with the Weather+PLUS computer and only controllable by someone with a mouse sitting in the KOB WeatherCenter?

I like the service a lot! The radar view and a look at the forecast/current conditions displayed often enough that I don't have to watch very long to get any info I want!

exactly the reason I thought the new network might bomb (lacking big-time MWC cities such as San Diego and Las Vegas) plus lacking national satellite coverage.

I'd also thought the channel might bomb if MWC schools see a hit in the pocketbook (poor gate revenue from fans upset that they can't get to know their local teams very well and thus are not motivated to go to the games and see their team in person). In a case of poor gates, I'd have to think the mtn. would allow one off-air station in each city to simulcast half of that that local team's road games rather than have to fold the channel because it's hurting MWC economics.

I think CSTV/Comcast are too strong of media power to allow the channel to fold despite very limited cable coverage/viewership.

If they are using MPEG-2 or 4 with a 4:2:2 format then I am out of luck getting the backhaul feed. :(

The satellite and the freq, location will not be made to the public, unless the informations released into the news media for FTA dish TV viewers telling how to get the feed.

Good luck finding the raw feeds and happy TV DXing!

All right, here we go again. Trying to watch KOB NFL and 4.1 is dead, then I get the "4.1 is on 26.1" message from the tuner. Fine go to 26.1 and within a few minutes...blank screen with mesage "26 is on 4". Back to 4 and no signal with "back to 26"! This is VERY annoying and I cant watch the game! Or at least moere than a few minutes at a shot. What's happening over there? I didn't see the probelm earlier when I flipped thru the channels. My guide still had 26.1 for KOB, so I selected and it remapped to 4.1 as it should. But during this week's, and last week's games back-and-forth.

Yup..stretchy-vision. At first glance, it did not seem as distorted as I would have expcted, but sure enough, anyone viewed in profile that is on either edge of the image has a very, very long head!

I clearly do not see why they are doing this. Just send the signal out as 4:3, and let the user stretch it if they want to.

some of those Comcrap channels are probably because they just had a price increase (using some of the new cash flow to add additional cable HD channels).

It wouldn't surprise me if NFL-HD is another teaser channel since I read somewhere that comcast and NFL Network are heading towards a likely dispute since Comcast is moving NFL Network to a sports tier for additional $$$ (and means less viewers for NFL network).

I didn't realize CW/MNTV wasn't on comcrap in HD (for CBS, KRQE is obviously not seeing the money from comcrap). MNTV won't be in HD on comcrap even if a carriage agreement was reached (since KASY doesn't offer it in HD) and I'm sure CW is held up because of a lack of a carriage agreement too.

To the best of my knowledge, KRQE (at least via OTA) has NEVER been DD 5.1 enabled. Their station does not have the gear to do it.

FWIW, the SQ on KRQE has been quite good when properly decoded with Dolby PLIIx. My wife is addicted to the crime scene shows, and I was pleasantly surprised at the SQ, but it has never been 5.1.

OK Here is the answer straight from Frank Lilly @ KRQE

They have never had the capability/equipement to do 5.1. They are building a whole new digital media control center as we speak. Completion should be hopefully by the end of this year (2006). They will then have to bring it online and extensively test it out so realistically were looking at probably February 2007 timeframe before its up and fully operational.

As far as Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy in HD. They currently have only the capability and storage facility to timeshift CBS HD programming. No syndicated programming. This will all be fixed with the new digital media control center as well. Remember everything in primetime has to be recorded and stored for 2 hours each night as CBS only sends out a single HD feed for the east coast. Everyone else else to store it and play it back in its regular time slot.

So looks like things are coming albeit not as fast as we would like it for sure (Fall programming!)

I sent a letter to KASY over the Stretch-o-vision for Star Trek:

Star Trek looks great. But PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop the stretch. Digital Televisions of all types have the ability to stretch a 4:3 picture to fill out the screen. Star trek isnt in a 16X9 format and looks worse than it could be if not stretched. Please until you get HD equipment and an HD feed of Star Trek, Just say NO STRETCH.

Oh and another BS canned response from Comcrap when asked about missing HD networks.

Comcast is committed to deploying HDTV service. We are working to provide as
many high definition channel broadcasters as possible. Here are some of the
factors involved with expanding our high definition lineup:

-the negotiation and contract process required to obtain the rights to carry a
specific high definition broadcast, such as TNT-HD and HD-Net.

-the increased bandwidth resources which are required

-the relatively low number of subscribers (currently only a small minority of
customers have high definition compatible television sets)

We will continue to explore additional HD programming opportunities as more
content providers make plans to offer their programming in HD format.

We appreciate the fact that you took the time to let us know what is important
to you. We hope to expand our high definition channel lineup as fast as we can.
Unfortunately we are unable to provide specific details regarding the launch of
new channels at this time, please keep an eye on your monthly billing statement
as the announcement of any channel additions will appear on those statements.

Thank you for choosing Comcast.

Sincerely,

Comcast Customer Care Specialist

Remember everything in primetime has to be recorded and stored for 2 hours each night as CBS only sends out a single HD feed for the east coast. Everyone else else to store it and play it back in its regular time slot.

The east coast feed from all nets begins at 6pm (8 eastern), therefore it's only a 1 hour delay. On delay things are not recorded into a system but rather timeslipped by 60min.

Today I picked up an SA8300HD DVR and asked the Comcast rep about CBS, CW and MY50. She said they are waiting for 13's contract with another carrier (CableOne?) to expire before they can (hopefully) contract it. AS far as CW and MY50, she had no idea.

Ya know what Comcast should do is provide the HD boxes with built-in tuners for OTA HD. I would be happy with that since I rely on Comcast for a majority of my local channel HD viewing.

And finally, I was checking out KOB on a Sony with built-in tuner last night (Wed) and I had the same problem as Sun football: jumping from 26-to-4-to-26. It would stay on 26 for only a few minutes before redirecting to 4 which would be "no signal" then back to 26. But when I checked using a Samsung SIR-T451 tuner it locked on KOB as 26 and never remapped to 4. And watching Earl/Office tonight (Thur) on Comcast in HD there was NO break-up or intermitent signal. I still wonder about the live broadcasts though.

(whew) done!

Thanks! Fortunately, Tivo's SP feature should catch the change.

I did not notice the network, but if it is CW, then its times to ask them to stop the stretching too.

yes, the last couple VM's were on UPN as UPN had the rights to the show until the network went away. CW has the right now.

KWBQ should be in true HD format and not stretch-stench-o-vision (about 12.5 mbps of hd resolution goodness the last time I looked) plus CW sends out a true HD feed to their affiliates.

I think it is being used for NFL HD programing. I've caught replays of a couple of NFL games on there. Later this year they will have games on Thursday nights(saturdays too maybe?) on the nfl channel and I'm guessing that's what it's about.

because KASY is the local My Network TV station in Albuquerque (while KWBQ got CW). Even if there wasn't a MNTV, KASY would have become an independent (and aired tons of syndies, or more sports, or maybe even latched on to i, america one, or yet another shopping channel, etc).

Thats pretty odd, judging from the fact that they did in fact broadcast Star Trek in 4:3 with black window box bars added at the station. That suggests that they can in fact send out a 16:9 signal.

Having said that, I do not know what resolution they are using, but even if it is 480p or 480i, I have to think that real HD stuff would still look better down rez'd but maintaining the proper aspect ration.

Oh well, I have to say, other than the gigantic MYTV station logo, Trek looked pretty good.

I am interested in getting all available albuquerque HD channels OTA. I live in the heights. I was wondering what type of antenna I need (UHF only or UHF/VHF) and whether or not I need a multidirectional antenna? Hello Jahjahjones,

Most 1089i and 720p HDTV modes are 100% percent from the Sandia Crest mountain, and the rest of other stations are plain old 480i from the Crest and elsewhere.

You will need to use the VHF and UHF antenna sinces the 2 stations plan's to go digital after the analog shutdown on 2-17-09 or sooner the better because they want to retain the channel 7 and 13 "KOAT and KRQE".

Here's the informations on the stations now broadcastings..... :)

KASA-DT 2.1, FOX, 720p real channel number is 27.1.

KOB-DT 4.1 and 4.2, NBC, 1080i HDTV and 480i for Weather Plus, 26.1 and 2.

KNME-DT 5.1 and 5.2, PBS 1080i HDTV and simacast of analog 480i, KNME-TV, 35.1 and 2.

KOAT-DT 7.1 ABC, 720p, 21.1

KNMD-DT 9.1 to .3, PBS, 480i, "Note that are running low power at 200 watts ERP from the Sandia Crest mountain at this time"

KRQE-DT 13.1, CBS, 1080i, 16.1

KWBQ-DT 19.1, CW, 1080i, 29.1

KASY-DT 50.1, MNTV, 1080i, 45.1

The rest of other stations are mostly church stuff, and spanish channels you may have scanned on are 480i with subchannels on or not.

Hopes that's helps!!

Most designs of UHF antenna do an acceptable job for VHF channels 7-13. You only really need a VHF antenna if you live in a market like Las Vegas where a station has elected to stay on channel 2.

I sent a somewhat nasty email over to KASY/KWBQ just now.

I was greatly disappointed in The CW this week. I was so greatly used to watching Smallville in HD over the years on The WB. Now that you are CW you’re not broadcasting HD only SD. YUCK. BRING BACK THE HD! Don’t make me wait for the Season 6 Box set next fall.

If I was paying for KASY and KWBQ I would be demanding my money back after this week. Rumors over on htt://www.avsforum.com in the local ABQ thread says you had some transmitter problems up on the crest. While I could buy this excuse for the outage on the weekend, I can’t think of a reason that would cover the lack of proper HD Digital Television support. If you had problems with an Analog Transmitter you would have spare parts on hand to get it up ASAP. DTV is the future. Networks have had almost 9 years now to bring up their DTV side to standards of service on the analog side. But that is clearly not the case. With less than 3 years until the analog is shut off in February of 2009 how much more problems with those of us in the digtal age suffer at the hands unconcerned station engineers and managers?

On a side thought, Superbowl on CBS this year? Woot. Even more Fuel to Blackmail Comcrap for more Free Service to keep me as a customer. I am so looking forward to my house being built more everyday. To be able to call comcast and tell them Im moving and they can't come with until they offer ALL the local DTV stations.

I would like to see America One (if it has to be a non-local thing).

If it has to be local, a breaking news channel would be nice (local breaking news would take priority - something like NewsMax on KNBC in Los Angeles that you can watch over the web if you aren't in the L.A. area with a digital tuner). For filler, breaking national events would be cool.

I am a breaking news nut and my home satellite dish gets a workout following the events of the day (it would be nice for a local channel to use their network resources to compile the national breaking news events when there is no significant local breaking news all into one easy to watch digital multicast channel -- such as Terrell owens overdose, Lakeland Florida deputy killed, the school shooting in Bailey, Colorado or the homocide suspect car chase in Los Angeles, all in the last day as examples).

I love the digital sub channels. It is nice to have a much wider selection of programming if you are not a cable slave. Imagine a Station that had 3 or 4 subchannels. All Sitcoms on one, Scifi Action shows, and an infomercial one. Maybe a drama show channel like Matlock or murder she wrote type.

An independant station could corner the syndication market.

Subchannels steal bandwidth from the HD signal; they are therefore evil, and must be eliminated.

So, is the CW going to be HD or am I going to have to continue to never watch it, and wait a year for the DVD set of the one program on that network which has my interest?

Reason why I don't want the ads to be boring and as long they don't pop up right in middle of TV show programs.

The format on the "L" bar is determined by NBC WeatherPLus, so we're limited on what we can display. The extra spaces you see right now, are going to be used for sponsor logos. Right now we're running our LOCAL segments commercial free, but in order to keep this as a "free" service for our viewers, we will eventually have to put in advertising. I can however add more local cities to the "L" Bar.

The radar display is determined by the weather of the day. I have set up a sectored display sequence for the days when the weather is different all over New Mexico. Some days when there is nothing going on, it's left in single statewide coverage mode. It is up to the individuals on duty in our office to "launch" the sectored display. Of course it will also be showing exactly what you see in the newscast, when we're on the air.

Eventually we'll have short local taped inserts, with Steve, Rick, Shar and me presenting a local weathercast, followed by a quick advertisment.

thanks for the reply. What better way to launch short local taped inserts than do a "Ballooncast" of wind forecast, cloud layer forecast, POP, "BOX" expected availability, etc. for each flying event of the fiesta! That would definitely be local and desired in this area over the next couple weeks or so (and give my relatives/visiting friends a good chance to see what the weather is going to be like when we head out to the park - and for me to show off 4-2 :D ).
