millerwill 10-07-04, 12:16 PM Benji: Are the 'analog' cables channels 1-99 on COMCAST? With my current tv (hlp 6163) I get audio from ALL channels simply by connecting the moto 6200 cable box to my AV receiver with a digitial (optical) audio cable. My question was, will it also work this way with a Mits dlp?
strummer2k 10-07-04, 01:02 PM I have the 52725 (love it), but have noticed that any text displayed on the bottom of the screen has about half of it cut-off. What can I do to fix that?

One of the Tweeter locations in Maryland told me that they are expecting 64 for the MD, PA, NO VA, and NJ area. Of the 64 they are getting 31 were already pre-ordered as of Friday of last week. Originally these units were scheduled to arrive in their warehouse on October 5th. I called yesterday to check the status and learned that they are now scheduled to arrive on October 8th. All I can do is keep my fingers crossed. Of course I am not sweating it too badly since I am typing this on my 62525 anyway!
I love the PC output of this unit; the picture is crystal clear. I only hope it is as good on the 725.
Cayenne 10-07-04, 01:13 PM I just got mine in NJ yesterday. They said they had plenty in stock and mine is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow.

Sounds like your set needs keystone adjustments as well as the horizontal/vertical adjustments to get the picture square. Look a few posts back for the procedure or call your Mitsubishi tech.

...or you could be in one of the "stretch" or "expanded" formats. Try cycling through with the format button to get to the "standard" format.

If you run the cable into the Mits (CableCard) you will need to connect both analog and digital audio out to your AV receiver.

yes, that too.... :) never thought of that since I've never yet found the expand modes very useful... although stretch plus is ok... it will cut off top and bottom of the screen though.

Neither do I (like the stretch modes)....but it sure seems like I have to switch it back to "standard" a lot. Should it not stay in standard format for a particualr device if that's what you selected?
Also, has anyone had any problems with the netcommand/extra IR sensors controlling other components? It sure seems like mine has a really slow response when I'm controlling another component (like my HD Sat. rcvr for example). I've tried moving the sensor around, above, below, away, up close, etc. to the IR sensor on the component, but it still seems to have "sluggish" response. Anyone else notice this?
UMD_Terp 10-07-04, 02:19 PM I think the format is saved on a per-input basis... I could be wrong though. For 4:3 material, I use either NARROW or STRETCH-PLUS.
I have one IR blaster set up for the DVCR when it is used as an analog device. The very first remote input seems sluggish, but afterwards the commands seem fine.
Dssquared 10-07-04, 04:34 PM The Home Theater Store brought my new toy yesterday. I was up until 3 am putting movie after movie in and trying to keep my jaw closed.
I have it hooked up to my Denon 2900 via component and it is staggering. Nemo, Gladiator, Star Wars, Kill Bill...just stunning. Played Amped 2 and
X-men Legends (both 720p widescreen) and I feel absolutely justified in dropping 4k for this tv. A friend of mine (that thinks I am insane for spending what I do on my 'habit') came over because he was curious. I had to kick him out around 2 am because he wanted to move in. I have had a broken down 32 inch Sony (the tuner was blown out by lightning 3 years ago!) for about 8 years and I kept waiting and waiting...and WAITING for a set that had a picture I liked without dropping 10 grand for a plasma.
Question- has anyone hooked up a satellite box via HDMI/DVI yet? I have mine hooked up via component and I am questioning spending the cash on yet another cable if there isn't that much of a difference.
Any advice would be great.
Now, back to my movie screen!

I'm expecting the phone to ring from Tweeter "any day" that says they are in the warehouse (my order was in a week ago). Has anyone got a 62725 delivered from Tweeter yet? I love/hate posts like yours because it underscores why the hell I'm so excited and that I have to wait! I have read too many posts on headaches, rainbows, tilts, etc. - Thanks for brightening my day!:D
coolstrategist 10-07-04, 05:14 PM Yesterday Tweeter confirmed Saturday 10/9 delivery for my 62725. He stated that they were coming in today. We shall see. I may stop by tonight to see if they have any on the floor.

I'm losing the 10% off sale from BB but gaining the 16 months, no interest/no payments from Tweeter (courtesy of the Mits charge card). Now if ESPN would do the Angels/Sox in HD Friday (I know...no chance) I'd really be in TV-Heaven.
keithsimp 10-07-04, 06:11 PM And I know someone here can answer this question for me.....
2 items add to the weight of the Mits vs. Samsung.
1) The plexi-glass shield on the Mits. I don't believe the Sammys have a protective piece on the front.
2) The Mits does have a built-in tuner, where the Sammy does not. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
I don't know if these add up to the total weight difference, but they certainly would add to it.
coolstrategist 10-07-04, 07:57 PM Thanks Keith! Seems simple enough but yours is the only response!
So there is a bit of value in the extra weight.
njbruin 10-07-04, 08:15 PM How tall a stand do I need for a 62-inch 725 tv? I currently have a 46inch Pioneer whose lower screen edge is 21 inches from the floor. That seems to be just fine. But should I raise/lower/same for the 62 inch? My viewing distance is about 12 feet, and we site in normal couches. Thanks for any suggestions!

I also remember reading in the original Mits DLP thread that, in general, weight == quality components. Now that's a generalization....but I happen to agree with it. You know, a tool or something like that...if it weighs more than a similar item you tend to think it's more sturdily constructed (is sturdily a word?)

The stand for my 62725 is 24" high. I also sit about 12' away in a "normal" couch.....people, please post pics if you don't have a normal couch, I wanna see one! ;-)
The heigth is perfect for me. Some people will say 24" is WAY too high....but it's all about personal preference.

Dssquared, welcome to our world!!!
I've been meaning to ask about this issue. I have a Pacific Cable DVI-HDMI that I'm using for my D* Samsung 360 HD sat. However, before I started using that cable I was using the component input. I switched cables (mainly because I had already bought the DVI/HMDI), but I want to say that the component cable looked better. If I look close with the HDMI cable sometimes I see "flickering" pixels (not sure if it was the source or what). Also, you have to make surethere's a snug fit.
Now, I have not switched back and forth to really examine it....but I'd like to hear if anyone else has compared the 2 inputs as well.
njbruin 10-07-04, 08:32 PM Thanks for your response.
Wondering about a bit more detail, if you don't mind.
How many inches do you estimate between the bottom of the TV and the bottom of the 16x9 display?
boristhedog 10-07-04, 09:03 PM njbruin - it's ~12" from the bottom of the TV to the bottom of the 16:9 screen...here's a quick pic (I tried to minimize the flash, by "gettin' low").
What's keeping your center channel speaker from falling off?
millerwill 10-07-04, 09:10 PM The height of the Mits stand is 14", and I think that is just about what is needed to put the center of the screen at eye level (sitting in a 'normal' couch).
boristhedog 10-07-04, 09:22 PM Originally posted by Benji

Good question....the top of the TV is 2 1/4" deep....that speaker is ~4" deep. It's somehwhat stable....but I may end up putting down in front...there's plenty of room there. Good thing there's no earthquakes in N. TX...otherwise it'd be a goner.
njbruin 10-07-04, 09:24 PM Whatever I end up doing, I'll post a pic of my set-up.
Thanks for your measurement. I will use it to set my lower display edge at pretty much the same height as what I have now. My rationale: although the diagonal is 62" versus presently 46", the Pioneer 46" is less "widescreenish" in dimension. So I don't think the top of the new screen will be too high.
Thanks again!
njbruin 10-07-04, 09:26 PM Thanks, Millerwill!
Your suggestion is exactly where I'm heading for my stand.
njbruin 10-07-04, 09:34 PM Craig,
What are those little speakers?
The 58" dimension will make it tough on my large speakers (fitting into the room).
millerwill 10-07-04, 09:36 PM njbruin: Probably the least expensive solution is the Oppli stand from Ikea, at 15 3/4" high, wide enough for a 62" mits, and strong enough.
njbruin 10-07-04, 09:47 PM - this is one I hadn't seen. And it should be relatively affordable!

My large JBL speakers were "banished" upstairs to the gameroom some time ago....those in the picture are Polk Audio (don't remember the model #). They're not top-o-the-line, but I got them for the size/sound quality. The surrounds are exactly the same size. Not great for music, but pretty good for movies/TV/sports.
njbruin 10-07-04, 09:58 PM Thanks (again!), Craig.
Will investigate the POLKs.
My wife has been in a banishing mood about my speakers for a while now!

njbruin, my stand is 14 inches tall which puts the center of the screen at about 40 inches. Seems about right for my seating height.
chad2323 10-07-04, 11:08 PM How loud are the fans on the 725's? I've heard they are very loud is this true? Thank's for any info you all can give.
njbruin, I guess i should have posted a picture of my new toys ,as my wife calls them. I had to build my own stand and rack as I ran out of $$$, after getting the new speakers, amp, HD Tivo, and Mits. 62725. this is a temporary thing until the coffers refill. I took a suggestion from this forum on cutting Styrofoam and attaching with Velcro to the Mits for the ctr speaker to sit on, and keep it from doing a back flip. We don't have lot of earthquakes here but I am in the vicinity of a volcano:D
scpanel 10-07-04, 11:42 PM I have to say the fan noise is less than my DISH 921 which runs all the time, plus you dont even notice it w/the volume at low/normal levels
njbruin 10-08-04, 12:04 AM I'm immediately envious of all the room you have. Anyways, I hope to soon post my own pic.
Thanks for the idea for the center speaker.

Are you sure about the "strong enough" part. The wide Oppli is rated at
154lbs and the 62" Mits weights 165lbs. Plus you probably want to add
components in the shelves. I was planning on getting this stand but adding
some extra casters in the middle.
Dan
millerwill 10-08-04, 02:14 AM The weight rating are quite conservative (probably a factor of 2), but it certainly wouldn't hurt to add the extra casters as you suggest.

Agreed. Sunday Night NFL on ESPN is the best (CBS college FB is right there too)....so why is ESPN HD's baseball so crappy? I get it in 720p 4:3 .... at least Fox is 16:9.
UMD_Terp 10-08-04, 08:55 AM ESPN baseball is 4x3 upconverted as well... it maybe even 480i... not even 480p, hence the reason it looks so bad.

GizmoSprocket 10-08-04, 09:48 AM Update (Long Island PC Richards purchase of 52725): I called them last night- the units came in yesterday and I could schedule delivery as early as Saturday. Sadly I am not around Saturday and Sunday, and Monday happens to be my anniversary. To put it mildly, the ~$4k set will have a lower WAF (and so will I, I imagine) if I spend my anniversary tweaking/futzing with/watching it... So it's been scheduled for a Tuesday delivery.
This is a vast improvement from the 10/20 warehouse date that was mentioned on my last call to them.
More to come.

Just received and set up my 725. My initial impressions: cosmetically, the grill cover over the speakers is now black (gray on the 525) and the non-glare protective screen is possibly 50% less glare than the 525, but not gone altogether. The electronics seem to be exactly the same as the 525. I get a great HD image (as I did on the 525). I'm not sure the 725 is worth the extra I paid for it above the 525,but I will have to live with my decision. I'm not in the high-end electronics swapping business, even though it may appear I am in this case.

Question to all:
When everyone says 50% less glare, do they mean that the bright lights reflecting on the screen are 50% smaller or show up 50% of the time? Also, would 0% glare be comparable to a plasma or something? Plus, is it even possible to get ZERO glare? I would love to have a tv that I could point a flashlight to and not see anything reflection.
UMD_Terp 10-08-04, 11:44 AM I took the screen off my 725 just for kicks last night. The picture without the antiglare screen is a tad brigter, but I think it lacks depth. The screen does something to the picture or the colors. It just looks deeper with the screen in place. Without the screen, there is no glare. Regardless of what you do, you will see a light reflect off the screen with or without the screen in place. This is true of any TV. It's just that without the screen, the reflection is dispersed and spread out. With the screen, you see an exact reflection of the light, like a mirror.
neoikon 10-08-04, 12:04 PM radtek,
Great job for a homemade stand!
Cayenne 10-08-04, 12:22 PM UMD_Terp,
In the other thread you noticed something interesting about the HDMI connnection as shown in the Service Manual, that it goes through a A/D conversion. Any idea if other sets do the same thing?
Also I just got mine delivered this morning. Played with it for 5 minutes before I left for work. Have AVIA coming in the mail. Can someone let me know what settings they are using so that I can just use that to start out until I get my DVD.
millerwill 10-08-04, 12:23 PM Do people really think that the sound is better with the center speaker 'exposed', as when it is on the top of the tv or on a stand in front, rather than being in a component compartment (typically below the tv in the stand)?
UMD_Terp 10-08-04, 12:25 PM Seems like the HDMI decoder in the set has an A/D in it and outputs analog YPrPb signals. I don't know if anyone else does this...
Does this mean that the signals sent over HDMI are formattable just as any other input is?
time4akshun 10-08-04, 12:29 PM Got my 62725 setup yesterday.
Just some comments:
- No tilt problems
- No rainbows yet
- No slash problems
Set looks excellent in 480P. Waiting for a new DirecTV access card for 720p and 1080i to test that. Very pleased thus far.
480i looks fine although when close you can see alot of dithering. But you have to be close 4 feet or less.

subwoofer,
Here's the best explanation of proper viewing distance I've found.
http://www.myhometheater.homestead.com/viewingdistancecalculator.html
I have a 62725 and I'm viewing from about 12 feet which is too far, but that's how the furniture worked out in my room addition.
If you want a better immersion effect, you should be about 9 feet away for a 62".
To re-iterrate an above post, I haven't noticed any rainbows yet. I just tried every channel and could not find a single rainbow on the 725. I frequently saw the "RB effect" on the 525. Maybe it's only my imagination telling me so, but so far, so good. I've tried programming the NetCommand but decided this feature is basically useless to me since I have the DIRECTV Tivo. I am using the HDMI port for my Tivo connection and so far it is holding. I frequently lost the connection on the 525 finally opted for the component connection. Stay tuned.
One other thing. I connected the Dolby Digital from the TV to my A/V receiver. So far that is working perfectly. I had frequent dropouts with the 525.

Sounds like I'll be alright with a 52" for a sectional couch that would be 6 feet away on the sides and 9 feet away from the wedge. Don't you think so? http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?s=&postid=4452661&fullpage=1

You're definitely in the proper range. When you really need a panoramic fix you can just plop a chair down in front of that coffe table :-)

[/QUOTE] I took a suggestion from this forum on cutting Styrofoam and attaching with Velcro to the Mits for the ctr speaker to sit on, and keep it from doing a back flip.
radtek: That was me. :) Glad to hear it works for you too. The packing styrofoam is cut at the perfect angle to be velcroed to the back of the tv and create a level surface for the speaker. And it doesn't show from the front. For added stability, the speaker could also be velcroed to the styrofoam and top of the tv, but I haven't bothered because it is already really stable.
I tried that and the speaker fell off bakwards, hit my wall and put a little gash in it. It is now under the TV on the matching base.
I tried that and the speaker fell off bakwards, hit my wall and put a little gash in it. It is now under the TV on the matching base.
Benji: I will be PM'ing you a short Release of Liability form to sign and return to me. ;) Seriously, though, I'm sorry if my advice screwed you. I guess I should velcro the speaker down, too.
Overall I am very happy with my 62725 after one whole week of use. My family and I love the HD PQ and the SD PQ is even better than my old Mits 46 inch RP-CRT. I haven't seen anything out there that comes close to it.
The only complaints I've had thus far is that the remote is a bit touchy when you try to increase the volume up or decrease it down and I've noticed a bit of a green tint to dark low contrast SD scenes.
The other issue I have is with the AVIA test patterns as well as the built in test patterns for setting brightness and contrast...I see rainbows with these test patterns but I don't think I see any rainbows while watching the TV. I find myself trying to see if I can see the rainbows which ends up distracting my viewing pleasure of HD, SD and DVD's.
Has anyone else noticed this or had similar experiences?? or am I just getting worked up for nothing.
When everyone says 50% less glare, do they mean that the bright lights reflecting on the screen are 50% smaller or show up 50% of the time?
subwoofer: The reflections are 100% as large and show up 100% of the time. They appear to be about 50% less bright or visible.
My set is in a family room that is actually an enclosed patio, with windows essentially covering 3 of 4 walls. I had shutters installed on the 2 sun-facing walls with my precious Mits in mind prior to buying it. Even with the shutters closed during the day, with the ambient light from the uncovered wall, I can see the shutters and the little splinters of light shining through on all but the brightest scenes. It doesn't bother me, though, as I don't view movies during the day.
Cayenne, I PMed you. Can you please check and respond? Thanks!

I thought it was just a quirk with my set... Is this what you mean?

You mean your actually using the speakers on the Mitsu!!!! I have the speakers turned off. I only listen thru my Denon AVR surrond sound system.
UMD_Terp, Benji, and others who have traded in a nn525 for a nn725,
I have a 62525 that I absolutely love. It doesn't seem to have any of the quirks that some of the early nn525 sets had and the picture quality is perfect...
So, of course I am thinking of trading it in for a 62725! The glare wasn't initially a terrible problem for me, but after a month of watching the TV it has become noticeable.
It appears that you are both happy with your new 725 sets. Is the PQ as good as the 525? Sounds like a stupid question, but I'm concerned that the diffused screen of the 725 will blur the picture a bit.
Is the Mitsubishi 62525 stand the same as the 62725 stand? The Mitsubishi literature I have calls for the same MB-62525 for the 62525 and the 62725. I'd just like to make sure from someone that already switched that they are in fact the same base.
Thanks,

Yep, I have to admit it. I am still using the speakers that come with the set.
I am looking at receivers and speaker systems, but I didn't have surround sound on my old set so I am doing a lot of reading in the "Receivers" and "Speakers" AVS forums.
I would ultimately like to get a receiver that switched HDMI ports as well as the normal video and audio ports, but the pickings is thin and expensive. The new Marantz 8500 pretty much fits the bill, but is not out yet.
What Denon receiver are you using?

I'm using an AVR-2805. I've had it a number of years. Becasue of my set up, I have to run my system as AVR centric system. I have both a Dishnet and a big dish sat system. The big dish feeds 2 vcr's. the Dishnet feeds one of them and is also directly connected to the Denon. I have the dvd player connected via component video to the Dennon and then into mitsu. I guess I could really just bypass the Denon for the video. The mitsu audio out is also connected tot he Dennon.
So I have the video output of the vcr's and sat dish hooked up to input 1 and the dvd to comp-1. When we want to watch local HD I just switch to ant-1 on the mitsu and listen thru the surrond sound system.

The matching stand is the same for the 525 and 725... both sets look fine on it. PQ actually looks slightly better on the 725 for some reason... maybe it looks smoother. The colors are certainly different. That is most likely because the two sets are calibrated differently. I had the same keystone issue with the 725 that I had to fix, but other than that... so far so good. I've only put about 3 hours of total viewing on it so far. This weekend I will play with it some more :)
scpanel 10-08-04, 06:41 PM Well, my replacement 52725 came this afternoon and the HDMI now works. BUT, it has a tilt like problem but only on the lower right. I was able to adjust some of it out but its still about 1/2 inch higher on the right than the left.
This is exactly what I was worried about, maybe I should have kept the first and lived w/the HDMI problem. So they are bringing another one tomorrow.
You know what I found interesting, this set shows 0 hours on it in the service menu. My last one had 35, and others sets had that as well, so maybe they are not testing them anymore?
So anyway, maybe tomorrow I can relax.....
tanilium 10-08-04, 07:22 PM jbeach,
Dunno the price range you're looking at, but the Anthem AVM 30 might be the ticket you're looking for. It does NOT do HDMI switching currently. This fall, Anthem will release an update for the Anthem AVM 20, 30 and Station D1 that will also do it.
I'm looking at getting a 725 here and ... Feb/March of next year getting the AVM 30. By that time I'll have the panny s-97 and updated my DTC100 to something this century.
Err, as I think of it, I still use a panasonic 310a as my primary dvd player now. *sigh*

However, if you want a working A/V receiver you can always try Denon, Sony, Pioneer, RCA, Sanyo, Norcent, Regent, etc. Wal-Mart sells a few of these low-performance, low-cost solutions if you are interested.

I used the styrofoam peice that was protecting the top of the tv. It's at a perfectly matching angle to the back of the tv. With a sharp saw I cut off chunks of the styrofoam, leaving a triangular wedge.
I used 3 strips of "industrial strength" velcro from Home Depot to secure the styrofoam to the back of the tv. I made the styrofoam slightly higher than the tv top to angle it down. Based on Benji's mishap, a strip of velcro on the top of your tv set and the base of your speaker might be a good idea.
. . . and you can't see it from the front.

Mine had a similar issue with the tilt... After adjustment, my lower right side is maybe 1/8th of an inch off from the extreme bottom left. Nothing major at all. I bet you need the rotational light engine adjustment to fix it.
So this will be your third set now?

I tried the service dept and was told that they are a couple of weeks out so that drove the decision to have it replaced again as my 30 days are up next week. And it is number 3, and am wondering if I should have kept the first and had the HDMI problem fixed.
After the adjustments, its still about 3/8-1/2 inch higher on the lower right. I was able to square up the top and left side. I can get to the point where I can the barely see the white rectangle, but when I get there I see all 3 colors on in the right lower side and the red is up about 3/8 inch. I was looking for a way to adjust the corners, like I could in my old Panny.
So I ended up splitting the difference between the left top and the right lower to get it down to about 3/8 last night. It looks better, but it is really noticeable especially when watching Fox News with the ticker at the bottom.
Anyway I'll let you know what happens today. Hopefully the third time is a charm.
Scott1094 10-09-04, 09:58 AM Hi, I'm a new here.
UMD_Terp
I just purchased a 62525 (no glare problem in my viewing room so it isn't an issue for me) and it is scheduled for delivery this Monday (10/11/04). If, as I suspect, I have a tilt problem as you describe, does going into the service menu VOID any warranty? I purchased a four year service plan and could always call and have a tech come out and do the alignment thing.
You guys are amazing. I looked all over for reviews on this thing and found none but, the information I've seen here beats any review I've ever read, THANKS.
UMD_Terp 10-09-04, 10:18 AM I seriously doubt that entering the service menu would void the warranty in any way... if you feel like your tech would rather do the adjustment, then I would have them do it, but it is fairly easy and if you are careful, I really doubt you will mess anything up.
scpanel 10-09-04, 10:26 AM This adjustment is easy to do and dont think its a big deal, the issue for me was this didnt solve the entire geometry problem. Its any possible light engine adjustments that I would be concerned about doing myself and would have that taken care of by a tech if the set needs that particular adjustment.
This second set seems to be better focused than the first. I still wonder why it had 0 hours on it.
UMD_Terp 10-09-04, 11:40 AM hmmm.... after adjusting my 725 according to umr's settings, the picture looks great. I did notice one thing though that I had not noticed before. In a dark room with a completely black screen, I see what seems to be an internal reflection in the lower center of the screen. It's only visible with a completely black screen. You can only see it when viewing the TV dead on. Anyone see somthing similar. I may have to call Mitsubishi about this one as it is a bit annoying. It looks like a splotch of brightness in the lower center of the screen...
Subwoofer, yeah I have a duel recliner thingy that the wife had to get along with a matching chair, hence the home made stuff. She said my well used, slightly wore and stained Lazyboy would no longer cut it. The stand and av rack were made made from by modifying a couple of wooden utility
shelving units picked up at Fred Meyer for $35 a piece, fortified of course to carry he weight splash a little stain/Varathan on it and "Ta Da'. Its 14" high 19"deep and 64" long. we sit at about 10'6" from center and surprisingly the view from the other chairs is good also at 7'6" and 6'6". Will attach picture of layout with all the furniture.

Millerwill, I have tried both ways an my preference is the ctr speaker on top, with a slight angle down toward the listening area. It just seems more clearer and natural. I think having it closer to the floor and inside an enclosure causes some reflective or absorbtion variences that you don't have on top.

2left,
I have not done the speaker velcro either. I used 3 blocks and put a real thin 1/8 inch cedar paneling strip on top of the Styrofoam blocks to tie the 3 together. Works great! :) Glad I ran across your post, Thanks for the tip.
This is a great thread. I have learned a tremendous amount of info from you folks, and my 52725, black TechCraft stand and DirecTV w/ TIVO is scheduled for delivery and setup on Wednesday. Unfortunately, I will be on business travel and the wife will have to supervise the delivery/setup!
While the local Mom & Pop store I purchased the above items from handles delivery and setup, they said it does not include connections to my audio system (Kenwood 6070, 6.1 surround sound receiver) and DVD player (Sony DVP-NC655P).
You guys have so many different types of setups...is there an obvious preferred way to setup/cable my system, based on my components? The TIVO system seems to come with just about every imaginable type of cable/interface. Tx!
P.S. Does the Phae III Dish you get with a DirecTV HD/TIVO setup include a built in HD OTA (UHF), or will I definitely need a separate one to get local HD channels??? If I need a separate one, it will unfortunately need to be indoor (homeowner's asociation). Any recommendations?

My 525 did not have this problem... so I take it that it is not normal. I don't know if it really is an internal reflection though. I can't see anything when the TV is turned off. It is only when the TV is on and the lamp is warmed up, and even then only on a completely black screen. Any ideas? Is it an internal reflection, or something else?

Do you mean OTA tuner or antenna, surely you know the TV comes with a built-in OTA tuner. You're HD/Tivo will probably have one too.
Tell your Home Owner's Assoc. to go pound sand....there's a federal law saying you can put an antenna on your house/apt. for video reception.

boristhedog 10-09-04, 02:39 PM Speaking of OTA....I'm now having a problem with my tuner (62725). I've been swapping/tweaking my antenna to try to get ABC (WFAA 8.1 Dallas). The last time I scanned for channels, I was watching it (slowly) increment through the channels and I can see it "ADD" several digital channels as I expect. However, when it finishes and I go to see which channels it picked up, there's NONE!! Only analog. What's the deal? This used to work. I've tried scanning again with and with out the "prefer digital" option and still nothing (although I always see it "add" the digital channels when scanning).
With the same antenna, I scan with my Samsung 360 HD Sat. rcvr and I get all the digital channels I expect. Anyone else have any issues with the OTA tuner?
My gripes with the 725 are...
The tv smells like fumes, will this go away?
Fan keeps running after tv is turned off...(any advice?)
OMG the fan is LOUD..
I have a green, orange, glow on a blank input just under the middle of the screen...????WTF
Srtetch mode i want to use on here is HORRID....Things get reall skinny, fat, hard to explain the stretch mode on here, it is extremely bizzare.....When there is camera movement things get real wicked like being in a funhouse...
Green outline glow? running across chuck liddels shoulder, and commentator talking to him there was green outline on outside of jacket....DVD is ultimate KOS available at rental stores....
neoikon 10-09-04, 02:43 PM Since this thread has touched a lot on PQ and alignment, I'm hoping someone can help me. I've had my 62725 for about a week now. So far, I'm pretty happy, though, there are some issues with the PQ that are really bothering me. I seem to have a problem with shadows (or something).
These football images are taken from OTA antenna on a digital station.
http://server5.uploadit.org/files/neoikon-TVFootball.jpg
These images from Halo are using Monster Video 3 component cables. The shadows on the text isn't very apparent in these pictures, but in person they are really annoying. It makes my friends say, "Why is the picture blurry?" It's not something I want to hear after spending 4K on a TV! An important note, if I enable 480P this shadowing problem occurs. If I have it in 480i mode, the shadows disappear. Why is this?
http://server5.uploadit.org/files/neoikon-TVHalo.jpg
Any help is greatly appreciated! Is there something I can tweak? I've already tried turning on and off the video enhancements (such as "Video Noise", "DefinEdge", etc)
boristhedog 10-09-04, 02:43 PM One more thing I hope someone can clarify for me....
What's the deal with NetCommand's "learning" function. Every time I learn buttons for one remote, it wipes out what was learned for another remote. Specifically, I havea "regular" Tivo D* receiver (video 2 input on TV) and a Sammy 360 HD Sat. receiver (HDMI input on TV). I can't seem to get NetCommand to "learn" both of these remotes at the same time!??!?!
Any ideas?
phillyaj 10-09-04, 04:05 PM So I finally did it. My 725 is coming on Tuesday. I made the purchase on Friday and was told by the A/V store that THEY would do the Hookup and not Comcast. They said call Comcast and schedule the deliver of the HD receiver ...etc. So I called on my ride home, and they said.."Ok...no problem....how about October 19". I FLIPPED!!!. I've researched this TV since it was announced and now I have to wait another 2 weeks...This won't stand.. I called Comcast back and pleaded with the agent. No dice... the 19 was still on. TV place called and said they can deliver as early as THIS TUESDAY. I want this TV.....so Today I called Comcast back yet again, and this time tried the pity approach. After Pleading....making sure 'Tamika' knew I only needed the tech to come to my house and drop off the HD box and cables. SUCCESS!!!!! Comcast will come between 7am and 9am and the Tv will come sometime after that.
Ok..back to the TV. Camera Stop in Medford NJ has some nice sets, with knowledgable people. Got a 5 yr warrenty added on for cheap.. (PM me for details). It Doesnt include the Lamp....but you can't get everything. Purchased the matching stand for now, as my wife and I are looking for something nice to match our family room. I took advantage of the Mitsu financing, which I did 10 years ago when I purchased my first 50" Mitsu.
So..can you tell i'm totally psyched about this tv??? Now to update my components :D . I have an Onkyo/Integra receiver with Energy Take 5 speakers and just bought a 'cheapy' progressive scan DVD player for now. I really want to get a combo Hi-Fi VCR/DVD Recorder combo, but can't swing it right now. Also a TiVo is looking pretty nice right about now too...but I'll wait for that (Christmas is coming....) I also have the Center Speaker Dilehma. I'll have to see what I decide.
Anyway....Thanks to all for your great observations. I'll let you know how everything goes.
Timing worked out Perfect...as Eagles are on a By-Week this week and I should be all up and running by Next Sunday!!!.
ROCK ON!!!

On the OTA question, I know the 52725 has a built in OTA tuner. I was asking whether the Phase III DirecTV satellite dish has a built in OTA antenna. Someone told me it did, but I have not been able to confirm this.
scpanel 10-09-04, 07:11 PM Well, I got number 3 today and spent some time calibrating this afternoon to get it out of tourch mode. Alignment on this set was almost square. I went in and tweaked slightly and all seems perfect.
Its interesting this set had 35 hours on it like the first one, so maybe my 2nd one missed the testing somehow and that is why the geometry was off, oh well.
I took a look for the reflection issue some of you mentioned and as of yet dont see it on my new one. But I will check later in a very dark room as I want to get a few hours on it today and recalibrate tomorrow.
But so far its great!

Where are you enabling the 480P?
I can try and simulate, is this XBOX, Playstation 2 or maybe a PC? We have tried all with the first set and even with Composite video they look better than the pictures you reference (we used the front inputs).
I have to say I hate monster, and I really think the cables from BlueJeans cable are better and cheaper. I am currently using Tara Labs component video from the DVD (and I also have some Virtual Dynamics component cables and balanced interconnects) and BlueJeans DVI-HDMI for the Dish 921.
Let me know...
Melonhead11 10-09-04, 11:25 PM I was surfing through the OTA HD channels tonight and all of a sudden my remote wouldn't respond. Well I guess I'm not the only one to have this problem. I have had this too but I couldn't turn the TV on at all. From the remote, or from the front panel. I have the V26 004.02 firmware, and I thought that because I've seen the .03, not having the problem, that my outdated firmware was the problem. I guess that theory is out the window. I have called the Mits reps and they said that they would get in touch with me within 24-48 hours. Well this has to be seen. I called on Thursday nite and haven't heard anything yet. I was going to tell them that I had the .02 version of the firmware, but didn't because somewhere I read that you weren't suppose to fiddle with the Service Menu. Is this right, or can I tell them what I have without feeling guilty? Now I feel that I'm back in the hunt for the perfect TV, and not alone. Thank you: Lyle

This sure sounds like the problem the first 525 owners had, a problem fixed with the first FW upgrade shipped by Mits. It's also got me thinking about this FW business. I realize the general consensus here is that the latest firmware revisions contain all previous fixes for the set. I subscribe to this belief. However, there are a few observations that make me question this belief.
1. Some 525 and 725 owners with FW revisions 4.02 or greater are having reset and OTA reception problems that were fixed in the first FW upgrade.
2. Software version number seen in the service menu is called "NetCommand Software" number, not "xx525/725 Software" number as one might expect.
3. First FW upgrade for 525 owners corrected reset problems but did not increment the FW revision number.
4. A Mits CSR told me there are no general firmware upgrades, just fixes for the specific problem an owner is having.
Taken together it could mean that the FW number we are seeing is not the revision number of the set but only the revision number of the NetCommand part of the software. In other words, one would only see their revision number move up if the FW upgrade they just applied contained revisions to the NetCommand part of the software only.
This theory would be more solid if most or all 725 owners were having these problems. They aren't. So am I just reaching?
Yep, for another beer. :D

My 52525 did not have this at all. I think there is a problem with the either the light engine or the way it mates to the lamp assembly that is allowing light to reflect and spill into a mirror somewhere. Only noticeable with a completely dark screen and it does not show up when the TV is off.

I have the exact same reflection spot on my 525. I spoke with my sales guy at Tweeter and since I'm swapping for the 725 in the next few days, I decided not to swap for another 525. I also suspect some sort of light leakage which is probably easily fixed.

scpanel 10-10-04, 09:11 AM I had a similar problem this morning where the TV wouldn't respond to the remote commands. Then, there was an onscreen message that came up that said something like reset remote in NetCommand menu.
Very strange.
scpanel 10-10-04, 09:15 AM For some reason after a few minutes of leaving it alone everything began working fine again. It reminds me of when your PC locksup and you have to wait for a process to complete before it responds.
I will be watching Football all day and put some hours on this set and will report back later in the day and let you know if the problem returns. It might be interesting to check w/Mits tomorrow though.

Well, I will call the service center Monday. If the problem is an easy fix, I woud rather just have them fix the thing. Whenever you get a new TV, there is a chance of something else being wrong. Except for this problem, the TV has otherwise been perfect.

I had this happen once to me when switching from an HD channel to a SD digital channel. It froze when it tuned the SD channel in. Anyone else who is experiencing this: Do you have a cablecard? What is your setup? I found an easy fix that worked: I simply pressed and held the power button on the TV itself until the TV started to shut down. Once it shut down, I fired it back up and was fine. I did get some strange Netcommand Mode message.

hmm.. I had attributed it originally to maybe a cablecard communication issue, but that may not be...
Did you check your set for any bright spots yet?
scpanel 10-10-04, 10:25 AM BTW I checked for reflections this morning and dont see any at all. I looked at the pictures and it sure seems like a cover or somthing came loose inside and light is reflecting on a mirror.

Don't get scared off by some of the (IMO minor) problems. With this group, there's no such thing as "defect free tv". It comes down to what you prefer personally....there's always trade-offs. I read posts and threads for over a year, and finally bought the 62725....it's nice.
boristhedog 10-10-04, 11:49 AM OK, here are a few issues I'm going to call Mits about since I haven't read or heard of any solutions:
1. OTA tuner no longer displays digital channels even though they appear to be "added" during a scan. This used to work fine.
2. NetCommand will purge one "learned" remote when another is "learned". I this normal? Surely you can learn more than one remote.
3. Bright spot on a black screen. I thought this might be "normal", but apparently its not.
4. Changing channels from HD to SD, or between HD channels of different format (like 1080i to 720p) causes display to show up briefly, then flicker around for a second or two, go black, and then finally settle down.
I have not posted a question about this one (4)....has anyone seen this?

I have to say, I have tried Panny DLP, disaster, Sony LCD, nice TV but black levels made me return it. So it was down to the Mits or the Sammy, and I think the Mits has a much more natural picture and is a great set. I too have had a few quirks, but still think this set rivals Plasma. Its 52" vs 50, cheaper than plasma and no picture burn!

MacWino 10-10-04, 12:01 PM Get my 52725 tomorrow and can't wait. In reviewing my current equipment, I see that my Sony CD/DVD changer has Component Video Out plugs (Y,Pb,Pr). So I'll use those to get video to the 52725. So that means that I'll need to use the DVI-HDTV connection for the DISH 921. The DISH
921 did not provide a DVI cable. Will one be provided with the 52725? And if not, is there any difference in quality between different cables?

I've noticed little, if any, rainbow affect, and the HDMI connectivity issue I had with the 525 seems to be resolved on th 725. The glare on the glare/proof screen is practically non-existent. Needless to say, this is far and away the best TV I've ever had, and I've had many TVs.

These football images are taken from OTA antenna on a digital station.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Is there something I can tweak? I've already tried turning on and off the video enhancements (such as "Video Noise", "DefinEdge", etc)
Is their any change in this effect if you move your antenna? Looks like a signal echo perhaps off of a nearby building?

Remember, most happy owners aren't going to seek out a forum like this one (other than a few geek prone ones like me). Like all online forums, you need to take note of trends but don't extrapolate from the messages you see here. The main trend I see on the Mits sets is some issues that Mits seems to be generally addressing pretty well.
To be honest, I had the same reaction reading the Sammy posts. So many problems and complaints scared me away from them. However, I do have to say that it appears that Samsung is doing a lot to make their customers happy. At the very least I'm impressed by how they stand behind their product.

HELP!
I just got my 52725 delivered, and while it is an amazing picture, I have annoying curlie-que black smudges at the top half of the screen. They are about 7 inches long in total.
I will be on the phone to try to get a replacement, but what could they be. do you think they are smudges on the inner screen?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hey Craig, search back in this thread or the MITS DLP thread....someone else had this problem. I think its simply some dust or dirt that settled in your set. Not a big deal.
chad2323 10-10-04, 12:44 PM Thank's all for the replies. Last year when I bought my first big screen a Pioneer 530 I loved it right out of the box. never had no complaints with the picture on that set until the streaking problem started and they couldn't fix it so Sound Advice exchange it for a Mits 55813 and the first one that came the Greyscale was off and there was dots on the screens so they picked it up and sent me a new one and this one came with dots also on the screen so this time I had their service company come and check it out and he said the crt's are bad. So this is where I'm at now. Sound Advice has been great they told me I can just use this set and wait until those DLP models come in stock or I can get the new 55815 model coming out. I'm not to impress with the Mits crt TVs so that's why I'm looking at the dlp's. Plus my son want's me to get a dlp so he can play his games 24/7 without burn in problem lol. On this set I usually watch only DVD's and HD so I'm not to worried on what SD look's like I just want a set that compare's with the Pioneer I had. Thank's again all for replying.

This is Xbox. In the Xbox control panel itself, it asks if your TV can support 480p. If I say "yes", the picture is sharp, but has ghosting. If I say "no", there is no ghosting, but the PQ just isn't quite as good as 480p.
I agree that Monster is overrated and not necessarily the best, but I got a decent deal. I tried two sets of the Monster video 3 cables (checking to see if maybe one was bad). I got the same results. I tried using a really, really crappy component cable and the ghosting was actually a little less apparent. Perhaps I'll order some BlueJeans and see if that helps. Other than that, what else could it be? Something I haven't tried is a second Xbox, but I doubt that's the problem.
joeld100 10-10-04, 06:17 PM "Something I haven't tried is a second Xbox, but I doubt that's the problem."
I doubt it's the Xbox, after all, the television broadcasts did the same thing. Has to be the TV IMHO.

Chad,
I am one of those owners.
No green edges, no streaks, no auto shut off. Picture is flawless especially in 720p and 1080i. I have around 20 hours on it so I knock on wood. VERY happy with this set. Well worth the money. The best DLP set around, even with the serviceable minor issues on some sets. You gotta remember, we are your above average and very anal testers here. But we are here to keep Mits and other vendors honest by bringing issues to the table.
You wont be dissapointed with this set.

UMD_Terp 10-10-04, 06:58 PM I would put money on the fact that 4 out of 5 people would never find any of the problems we mention here with these TVs... For example the internal reflection issue I have. Unless you plan on viewing a completely black screen for an extended period of time, the average person would never notice. :)
chad2323 10-10-04, 08:08 PM My 55813 has a reflection also and I notice it when I stand up and and get close to the set. Now I notice it during dark scenes when I'm sitting down but it's not bad at all. I went to sound advice when I first seen it and I notice the ones they had on the floor did the same thing. My Pioneer didn't do this so I just chalked it up to the mits brand. The refection is like in the middle of the tv and it starts off in a point and fans out not sure if it's the same thing since these are two different type of sets. If you want I would try to take a picture of it and send it to you.

tanilium 10-10-04, 09:12 PM welp, after 5 hours of taking down and building back up...I'm ok with the new 52725 that I bought.
However, I seem to have a centering issue..it's like the right side goes as far as it can and the left side shows a black bard an inch more. If I could shift the picture to the left 1/2, it would be perfect.
I haven't read through this thread in its entirety nor have I sought service on it yet. anyway, probably just a calibration thing I haven't gotten to yet.
Input is a DTC-100 from rca. That being said, in the high def channels...I seem to get a vertical "jitter" around greys/whites. kind of unnerving. Originally it was really bac but I change the DTC-100 to go from showing 4:3 to 16:9 and that fixed the issue...for the most part. It's *only* on hd channels that occurs.
Overall, of all the dlp's I looked at, the only one I really considered was the panny 50". It's pretty nice..but I'm happy with the mitsu. glare is negligible in my environment.

Is it worth buying TIVO if you have a PC connected to a Mits DLP tv that has a firewire port on it? Because I'm thinking that you can record from the firewire straight to your PC or do you need TIVO or something in the middle?
2nd question: Are there certain TIVO receivers that can record HD or can any model of TIVOs do that? Because I'm thinking of purchasing one soon.

I would consider it more than a slight lag....it's frustrating. You push a button to change a channel, the first one works but then the next one won't respond then you end up on the wrong channel!!! Or, you push a number...nothing....push it again...nothing...a third time you end up with 444. Argh. I thought the IR "blasters" was a great idea, it just doesn't work worth a crap for me. Am I the only one? Please share any tips ... I've tried eveything.

There is no standalone TIVO that will record HD, and they have said they don't plan on developing one. There is a DirecTV with TIVO that will record HD and also Echostar has a DVR that will handle HD.
tanilium, is the off-center an issue on all sources or only with the DTC100?
I've got a DTC100 and I had to go into the Menu-Assistance-Monitor Setup and play with those settings to get the image centered on my Toshiba Rear projection.
If possible hookup an OTA antenna to the Mitsu tuner and compare the same channel on both the DTC100 and the Mitsu's ATSC tuner. My DTC100 seems to have a sharper but more jittery picture than other HD tuners.

Netcommand does a great job changing the source on my receiver when i Change TV inputs - that is the most difficult thing for electronically challenged equipment users to figure out ...
I began setting up Netcommand this past weekend. It's pretty neat, but I know I'm not completely utilizing its abilities. For example, I was hoping it would change the input on my receiver when I changed inputs (as you mention above), but it doesn't. I went though some netcommand "learn" steps which I thought would do this for me, but no luck.
Also, for audio, I have everything going to my receiver (as most people do), thus I want the volume control to always control my receiver. No luck with that either. When I'm watching an OTA signal and I hit the volume control, it just says, "speakers off" as if it thinks I'm trying to control the internal speaker volume.
But yes, there is a frustrating delay. On the bright side, you can have components completely out of view (hidden) and still control them with the blasters.
Can someone summarize the utility of the netcommand feature for me? I understand that it allows the Mits remote to control other gear, but I guess I was thinking that I was going to be using the remote on my new (still in the box) Denon 3805 AVR to do all that. The WAF on this whole new 5.1/7.1 system would be higher the more simplistic I can make it to use and having only one remote on the coffee table to work everything goes a long way in that arena. Why should I do it one way versus the other - or am I going to have to still have an AVR, a TV and a DVD remote on the table no matter what I do?
Also, I understand that participants in AVS and other AV forums have higher than normal standards etc., but I too must admit to being if not scared off by so many tales of replacing sets/service calls - at least very cautious. I would be interested in seeing if the admins' might put up a sticky thread titled 'Mitsubishi DLP Owners Satisfaction Survey'. Questions could be along the lines of: Type of set, how long owned, problems - minor or major, repalcements/service calls and would you buy this set/technology again. Such a thread would get past the somewhat dismaying long discussions/disections of problems, and would give those who are casual or casual+ AV buyers a bigger picture view of how the owners feel overall about the brand/unit - something very useful to the general public. Obviously this could be done for other brands as well - what do ya think?
Thanks,
Paul

I HOPEFULLY will be getting my 52725 tomorrow and have a question about the bulb. The salesman (Local Video place) told me the replacement is 'direct from Mitsubishi" and will run around 350, but he said you get 200 back when you send back the old one. Is this true??? Also I was told life of bulb should be around 5-7 years. Sound reasonable???
I'm a bit suspect, as he didn't know that the tv-guide function wasn't available on the 725 series anymore.
Thanks

scpanel 10-11-04, 01:26 PM Paul,
I am not using the netcommand feature as I have a universal remote that controls all my Krell/DISH/DVD equip. Even with my 2 replacements I have no regrets, I still think its the best DLP out there today and rivals plasma.
Also, I think polls would be really a good idea for these sets to get a better idea of overall satisfaction with a particular manufacturer and model.
Steve
The first batch of the 525 series did have a few problems... most were tilt issues and cablecard problems. I think in the last batches of TV's (725 series and the later 525 sets) these problems have, for the most part, been resolved. In addition I think Mitsu has for the most part done a good job of responding to customer issues with firmware upgrades. If you look back to the release of the Sony GWIII sets they had their problems, the samsungs have had their problems etc. Work with a dealer/salesman you trust, check on the return policies.
On netcommand... netcommand, when properly setup should substantially improve WAF and CUF (child usability factor). The big thing that netcommand does is that it gives you an activity based remote control (to steal a term from the Harmony remote controls). The TV learns the remote codes for the attached devices (DVD, Sat, VCR, A/V Rcvr, etc.) and gives you an icon driven means of selecting a device and having the TV keep track of which device is selected so it knows which remote commands to send.
For example:
Using the TV remote you bring up the device selection menu, you select DVD. The TV switches to the DVD player input, turns the AV Rcvr to the DVD input, and when you press play on the TV remote the TV knows to send the playback command to the DVD player. The volume controls the AV Rcvr Volume.
If you switch to the VCR the TV switches to the VCR input, switches the rcvr to the VCR input and when you press play on the TV remote the TV sends the VCR play command to the VCR.
It's not perfect... it doesn't have quite enough buttons for some devices but by and large it works really well. It eliminates the device centric functionality of most remotes (i.e. TV mode-power/select DVD input, AV rcvr mode-power/select DVD input, DVD mode-power/select DVD input/Play).

For the most part, I don't see the green problem ("red shift", green glow on the left and red glow on the right). The only time I ever see it is over standard cable (non-digital). You can particularly see it when watching the simpsons (or any other cartoon with mostly solid color areas). I do NOT see the problem when using OTA digital, DVD, VCR, or Xbox input.
Have you tried non-digital cable? If so, do you see the red-shift (green glow)?
Glad to hear everything it working well for you!

I received my Mits 62725 (Sammy HLM617 out the door!) on Saturday and I also have not seen any of the issues Krichev refers to. I ran it basically all day Saturday and Sunday. And I also think I have the same issue with the manual because I was looking for a page that listed and displayed the inputs/outputs but could not find it. I will check page 13 when I get home. I'm a bit suspect, as he didn't know that the tv-guide function wasn't available on the 725 series anymore.
Thanks
Andy
THe numbers sound about right for what I've been told about buying a replacement bulb from Mits as well. I can't remember if expected life is 6000 or 8000 hrs. You can figure out how many years that is based on your usage.

Got a picture or two of this problem?
This is why this website is great because you can actually see what is wrong with these tvs. Theres no way a store like BB, CC or Tweeter would show you these issues.
Something was ommitted between pages 13 and 14 (the actual diagram). Maybe I should have kept my 525 manual. Seems to me it was in there.

Benji,
I just went on the site and printed pages 13 and 14 from the PDF of the 725 manual. I will just place the pages in my manual when I get home. But it is annoying.
Can someone please tell me the exact measurement from the base of the TV to the center of the screen, so I can determine which stand to get? For the 52" 725. Thank you in advance!
tanilium 10-11-04, 07:30 PM BigAl,
Thanks for the info. I am getting a winegard squareshooter I believe on wednesday and will do a hookup then so I can see the ota stuff.
What I think will be interesting is seeing if there's a difference between the DTC100 handling the ota and hte mitsu doing the ota. If there *is* is a diff, then I know where the problem is. I'll have an update hopefully on thursday/friday.

Are you going to use the Winegard for an HD signal from any distance? I'm about 55 miles from San Francisco and don't have a line-of-sight to the main the main tower (Sutro) although its just over the horizon. Curious to know how it works.
kbarduca 10-11-04, 08:03 PM For those of you having a problem with NetCommand you have to set the remote to NetCommnad mode. To do this, hold the remote against you chest covering the IR sensor (not at the TV). While doing this press and hold down the power button then press 9-3-5. This should set the remote.

Look at it from a sharp angle. Do they look like they are behind the screen? If so, it's most probably some dirt on the mirror. I had what I thought was a failed mirror, turns out it was a piece plastic or something left during manufacturing. While the service tech had it open, he cleaned up some other smudges on the mirror. The whole screen comes off very easily. The service tech said that the mitsu was one of the easier sets to service.
So I highly doubt you will have to return it.
Good luck.
Arbitter529 10-11-04, 09:23 PM I just received my 62725 from Magnolia HiFi. I exchanged a Panasonic 50DL54 for it. The picture on the Mits and Panny both look great. I did notice the screen on the Mits is not as bright as the 50 inch Panny, but I guess its to be expected due to the larger screen size. The 62 inches on the Mits makes a big difference from the 50 iunch of the Panny in overall viewing experience. I do have to control the light alot more with the Mits. There still is alot of reflection compared to the DLP without a protecive screen..
The HDMI port on the Mits is not working with my DirecTV HDTivo. I have it connected to component right now. Anyone having problems with the HDMI port. A tech from Magnolia is coming next Monday to check out the HDMI port.
Overall I'm happy with the change eventhough it cost me about $900 more.

MacWino 10-11-04, 11:17 PM Got the 52725 installed a couple of hours ago. Coupled with the Dish 921 I now have HD. Awesome. The Mits is great...even the Fox and ABC sports in non-HD tonight is really impressive. I've been reading this thread for about a week and don't have any of the problems mentioned. Or, perhaps, I just don't know what to look for. And I'll think I'll leave at that. Great buy! No buyer's remorse here! Of course the wife is in Europe and doesn't know I've done this, so we'll see in a couple of weeks when she returns.

hyperdoc 10-11-04, 11:25 PM I got my 52725 a couple of weeks back and reported in then. At the time I had a cheap OTA antennae bringing in HD. I have since added HD DIRECTV TIVO. Hooked the TIVO up via HDMI. I now have a new TERK 38 OTA antennae. I have that split going to TIVO and to the antennae 1 input on 725. That allows me to do some PIP besides PC and DVD. As mentioned I have the PC attached to 725. I earlier reported issues with losing reds. Thought is was probably the cable and turns out that it was the cable - just a bad connection in the cable. WOW - My Online NASCAR game is cool in big screen mode.
So I have no major issues but a couple of small annoances or things to still learn about.
1) When the TV turns after being off for awhile no picture comes up from TIVO. I found that swithing the mode (1080i, 720p, 480i, 480p) on TIVO causes the screen to appear. Any idea what is going on here.
2) When I go to Dolby audio on TIVO sound does not come out on TV and instead has to be played to the Audio Receiver.
3) I too notice remote can get a little behind my fast fingers and then it seems to catch up all at once with several commands going at once. Not always an issue. Maybe just certain sequences I have not figured out or documented.
4) All this talk on picture quality. It all seems a little relative and hard to figure out unless you have the pefect picture next to it for comparison. All HD looks great but I suppose it could be better and I have sense that mine might could be better (but how do I know for sure). Some programs come in better than others. Yes not just stations but even program to program things can be excellent or really excellent. I feel HD from DirectTV looks really good and local HD via OTA seems to fluctuate on quality (again all is excellent relative to regular TV).
5) I have an relative inexpensive AIWA receiver and NetCommand does fine with volume and power but it cannot set the input function (DVD, VCR, FM, VID/AUD 1, VID/AUD2...). This is becaus the AIWA uses a button to toggel between all. NETCOMMAND can toggle but that may not be correct depending on where the last setting was. Otherwise Netcommand is real cool controlling the TIVO, DVD and some of Receiver via on screen commands and one controller.
6) I did notice the TILT issue when viewing PC mode. Repair man came out and fixed it a little. He offiicially did not do it because he has to check with Mitsubishi before doing full changes. So he is rescheduling. It is not a major issue now with his tweak.
Overall - A very happy Mitsubishi 52725 HDTV Owner. Hope it stays that way. If I did not say it - Football games are way cool in HD.

Wow....I guess I didn't think it would be a big deal to fix. So you already had a guy come out to look at it or this is what they said over the phone? Please post (I'm sure you will) when you find out for sure.
Like I said, the CSR I talked to didn't think much of my other problems, but when I mentioned the spot he thought that was not right and required a tech to come out. I guess an actual tech calls to schedule a time to come out and I can describe the problem to him then.

I actually e-mailed my service center links to those pictures and he forwarded them on to mitsubishi. He said that he would like to bring the set in to his shop and examine it carefully. He mentioned authorizing an exchange for me with my Mitsubishi dealer... so that is why I am thinking I will be getting a replacement. Chekc the link I put in the previous post... I edited it in later, so maybe you missed it.

Football in HD is pretty cool as are the many network shows broadcast in HD. If they're local OTA stations they're free. Free is pretty cool.

That is the cheapest and easiest way to watch HDTV. You got Football, Baseball, PBS, and every new show on TV( 24, Lost, CSI etc). One Channel I am very impressed with is PBS. Not only is the video quality awesome, they broadcast alot of the programming in 5.1. Some of the programs can match up against Discovery HD Theater (and I don't have to pay a DIME for the programming). Not to mention Fox football, which is the clearest I've seen in any football broadcast (720p). I don't know if your local cable company is as bad as mine, but I wont have that @#$% in my house. I have a Channel Master 4228 antenna, love the reception and with very little audio drops. It cost me $60 and is the best $60 I have spent in a long time. To say that there is nothing to see on local channels is a huge understatement, especially for anybody who wants High Definition programming for a cheap price.
Thank You Kevin Barduca (A-1)
Have any of you had your xx725/525 calibrated. A review in CNET indicated that out of the box color temperatures/ grey scales were way off but much improved after calibration.
I've noticed that skin color is a bit off.
They then went on to say that the 525 is likely the best DLP that they have reviewed overall. It did get the highest rating result of all DLP's to date. However, they haven't posted test results of the HLP's or Toshiba.
Do you think calibration with avia would significatnly improve the PQ of my xx725? ... or is professional calibration a good idea (frankly I don't want to spend another 4-500 dollars.)
Thanks

Seriously -- does anyone in Florida have one yet???
Cayenne 10-12-04, 09:25 AM cmr15,
After starting with UMR's settings are my base and using AVIA to tweak my 52725 to match my DVD/lighting etc, I can say that there is a big difference between out of the box settings and what it looks like now. I think the biggest change came from setting the color management correctly. The skin tones look fantastic now.
I also thought about ISF calibration but I cannot justify the cost as I am already very happy with the way the set looks.
Watched Fifth Element superbit yesterday and was just blown away with how amazing the picture looked.

Don't get me started on South Florida. We get everything last down here. I think it has to do with how all this stuff comes from Asia to to West Coast, so it takes forever to truck everything accross the country to here.
scpanel 10-12-04, 09:41 AM I agree w/Cayenne, I too cant justify spending the 500+ on a calibration. There is so much flexibility with the perfect color adjustments, that I too think my picture looks amazing.
I say use either DVE or AVIA and spend some time like most of the rest of us and tweak weekly!

Thanks for the responses Cayenne and Scpanel,
Could you tell me more or less where you found UMR's settings in this extremely loooong thread. I thought I had been through it all but didn't come across his settings.
I'm really happy to hear that you two are pleased with just calibrating the sets yourselves. Do I need to go into the service menu to calibrate with avia/dve or can I do it without having to do so? I must admit some concern over going into SM. Is there a way to do a system reset if Iscrew something up in SM?
Thanks,
Craig
Cayenne 10-12-04, 10:19 AM Here is the post from UMR. None of these settings have to be done throught the SM. However I did go into the service menu and wrote down all the settings, so that later on when I do go and tweak more in there I would always have all the original settings just in case. I think it is just a good idea to have.

Overview:
This is a very compelling set once calibrated when used with quality sources. I did not see it with poor quality inputs so I cannot judge how it does with those. DVD and 720p HD look about as sharp as I have ever seen. It is the best implementation of DLP technology in an RPTV that I seen so far. Dithering and rainbows were well under control.
However, it is not perfect. The big problem with the model I reviewed was it crushed whites. It was small, but real. I could not see the 98 and 99 IRE bars on Avia. This will hide some details in bright sceens.
The color wheel timing was also off. This caused the colors to be slightly off.
Enhancement was also present on closely spaced horizontal lines that I could not eliminate.
Details for the 62735 that I checked out....
Time spent calibrating & reviewing performance: ~ 3 hours
Room lighting: Normal to completely dark
Equipment used for review and calibration:
JVC 30K D-VHS
Denon DVD-3800
SA 8000HD
Sources reviewed:
Star Wars I & II
The Fifth Man
Toy Story II
DVE 720p over firewire
DVE 480p over component
Avia
Pretty Woman (PAL)
Measured On/Off Contrast Ratio: 550:1 This set was almost exactly the same brightness as my GWII, but had slightly darker blacks.
Adjustments not attempted:
We did not venture into adjust the geometry. The overscan was about 3% for the DVD player and he was happy with it. The HD input was more like 8% overscan. The internal pattern indicated about 8% overscan. I could have improved on it, but he had little interest. We had no success in improving the TV in the service menu. However, I only attempted to fix one problem.
Performance not reviewed:
I did not spend any time reviewing the SD performance or any inputs other than component and firewire. Please don't ask me about things I did not see.
What this set does well:
The frequency response of this set for component and firewire was stellar. The only set I have seen look better is the Sony Grand Wega XBR950 and this is because it had less moire due to its higher resolution. These observations apply to both chroma and luma. Truly a wonderful thing to see.
The component DVD input looked GREAT with my Denon 3800. The picture was sharp yet film like. Unlike the JVC D-ILA which was full of digital noise.
Gray scale OTB on the low temperature setting looked very good. I have seen better, but it was not bad. I did not have time to attempt a full calibration of gray scale.
Internal reflections in this set appeared to be well under control. It was present, but much less than the JVC D-ILA.
What this set needs help with:
I could not stop this TV from crushing whites on the DVD player. I did not see a problem with HD over firewire, but that could be caused by the lack of resolution of my test patterns. I could not see the bars of the Avia contrast pattern. I have never had this problem before and suggested he call Mitsubishi to see if they can fix it.
The timing of the color wheel appeared to be off. This resulted in blue leaking into colors where it should not be. I do not know of any solution for this in this TV. I am sure this is causing a subtle error in the colors including one primary.
There is enhancement on the horizontal lines. This is easily seen in the Avia wedge pattern. We could not get this to go away. It was not severe, but it is present.
The firewire input seemed to have a little more dithering than the analog. Not sure why this would be. Dithering on the component inputs was generally very minor.
I could see rainbows, but they were much less than what I have seen on previous Samsungs.
It could really use the ability to turn off individual primaries. This would really help set the gray scale and color decoder.
It does not display PAL, but I did not expect it to.
I was surprised how far off the color decoder was. It took considerable adjustment to get the colors correct. This may have been partially caused by the color wheel timing.
Chromatic abberation (color fringing) is present on this RPTV like all others as you get closer to the outside edge, but it is not horrible.
The Settings:
Sharpness - 0
Color - 31
Tint - 31
Brightness - 45
Contrast - 41
DefinEdge Off
Video Noise - Reduction
Color Temperature - Low
Custom Color Settings...
Magenta - 53
Red - 43
Yellow - 43
Green -35
Cyan - 31
Blue - 44

Yea but I don't want an antenna on my room and if I want to watch football, I would get the Sunday Ticket thru DirecTv. and if I didn't have direct TV, you could still watch HD football from your local team on Fox or NBC
jacobms1 10-12-04, 10:40 AM Is there a way to save 2 different settings for one input? My reason for this is that I find I need the TV much brighter/higher contrast during the day than I do at night. It is not a huge deal to continually change these things but I just wondered if it was possible to do it automatically, for example can I setup 2 things on the same input through netcommand or does it only let you do 1 per input?
coolstrategist 10-12-04, 10:44 AM Do I need to set anything else after I revise all the settings? It appears that after spending 2 hours revising the settings on Sunday, everything was back to default (Contrast maxed out etc) when I turned the set back on the next day.
jacobms1 10-12-04, 10:47 AM One more question and this is probably a stupid one:
I know how to cycle and adjust the video settings: sharpness, color, tint, etc. But I cannot find where to adjust the "custom color settings" from UMR's post. I am hoping adjusting these will get rid of the artificial green look on everything with green in it.
I have heard people talk about green shift/ green push, etc. Is this what I am seeing when everything green seems to be almost neon green/glowing? Will this be fixed through a color adjustment or is it something else?

Jacobms1,
Go into the "Setup" menu...scroll over to "Perfect Color" and press "enter"
Per the manual:
"Select PerfectColor and press ENTER to display the menu for manual color adjustment. Individual sliders for Magenta, Red, Yellow, Green, Cyan and Blue will be displayed. The sliders have a numeric value, where 63 is the maximum. The default setting for each color is 31 (center). Highlighted text will show which slider you are adjusting. Each active input can be individually adjusted."

I'm assuming you mean "on your roof". If you don't mind one in your room, the Gemini ZHDTV1 or the Silver Surfer will give you great results (assuming you're not in BFE). From what I've heard, OTA is also the only way to get true HDTV signals (such as 1080i). I was flipping channels last night and saw Monday Night Football in HD for the first time. Stunning.
Plus, there is something to be said about "free". :)
One bad thing about this TV is I spend more time admiring the picture than watching the actual show!
Cayenne 10-12-04, 11:24 AM This is a really stupid question, but when watching widescreen movies, should the black bars on top and bottom be the same size? Mine has abuot 1 inch bar on top and 2 inch at the bottom.
However checking the overscan setting in the SM everything is fine.
Is it the dvd player - Toshiba SD3900, or something else?
scpanel 10-12-04, 11:42 AM Cayenne,
You can try the UMR settings, but each set is alittle different. I have found for example that the contrast above 31 is too high and mine is now in set at 24 using component. The best way is to really test your set w/DVE or Avia.
Cayenne 10-12-04, 12:06 PM I am not sure how contrast would make a difference in the size of the actual bars, unless I am missing something?
I have applied UMR's settings and also calibrated with AVIA. As I said the overscan is okay, and I don't have a tilt issue.
Since this is my first Widescreen HDTV, I just wondered if it was normal for the bars on top and bottom of dvd's (starwars for example) should be the same size or not.
I know there will be bars with some format's of dvd's, but I always assumed they were the same size.
scpanel 10-12-04, 12:11 PM You can go into the service menu and bring up the test patterns and see if the vertical is off. Its an easy adjustment and its also posted in this thread
Cayanne,
Thanks for the settings.

An antenna for OTA could be as small as a table top UHF antenna depending on where you live. Tests in the Washington, DC area showed that many people had good luck with existing antennas as well. You might want to read more about this particularly if you're looking at a set with a built-in tuner. Otherwise, why not just go for a HDTV-ready set and save yourself some money?

Looks to be 9.5" x 13" x 13.5".
Currently, I'm borrowing an indoor antenna (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001FV36E/qid=1097604864/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i2_xgl23/102-2883799-6217744?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846) from BB that was NOT rated too high by people of this forum. Though, I've had pretty good luck with it. I'm borrowing it until I can get an outdoor one on my roof (which I just received from UPS 10 min ago).
After much research of this forum, I went with a Winegard 4-bay (PR4400) (http://www.solidsignal.com/prod_display.asp?CAT=&PROD=SPR4400). As long as you're just doing UHF (which most all stations are now-a-days (channels 14-83)), the antennas are not too huge. When you get into VHF you get the crazy, big, ugly ones. I'll get this bad boy on the roof tonight, hopefully.

hey DC, I'm confused now by what you typed. So I can go two routes (or both). First, I can get an antenna and place that in my living room or my balcony and get free HD local channels. Or secondly, I can get Comcast or DirecTv and get HD channels from them with my HD-ready TV (Mits DLP since it has the cable card, right). Or I can do what most do here and just have both since the first option is very cheap and sounds great.
Thanks guys!

I have a 52725 and I got a Sanus PFDV stand. Depending on the size of your center speaker, it fits behind a grill in the center.

The great thing about the Mits is that is has two antenna hook ups. I have my cable going into one and my OTA antenna into the other. Or, if you have a cable box/D*TV box that supports DVI or component, you could use that, obviously.
millerwill 10-12-04, 02:57 PM dwarren2: I have had my center speaker in the tv stand, but recently rigged up an arrangement for anchoring it to the top of the tv. The sound is noticeably better--fully and more wide open--having it on top, fully exposed.

Like that stand but it seems to be too deep for my liking. I only need one that is 20" or less. IKEA seems to have some. I just want to get this tv as close to the wall as I can.
So here's my question, do the cables on this tv stick out far in the back?

Again it the same as real estate, Location, Location, Location. Last summer in preparation for getting the Mitsu, I replaced the OTA antenna on my roof. I put the biggest sucker up there I could. I think it has a 180 inch length. I live about 20 miles east of Rochester NY on top of a glacial drumlin. Depending on which way I aim the antenna I have been able to pick up Buffalo(100 miles) and Syracuse(50 miles) in HD in addition to Rochester.
dwarren2 10-12-04, 03:08 PM millerwill: Actually my Teac center speaker is just a tad to long to fit in the opening. It sits on top of one of my compnents on the right hand side of the stand.
DC_SnDvl 10-12-04, 07:22 PM Got my 52725 last night in time to watch MNF, it looked great. The colors a a bit to bright and I was going to use AVIA tonight to clean everything up...but my set will not turn on.
I called Mitsu and they said it will be 24-48 business hours until anyone calls to setup an appointment.
I have tried to reset the set 4 or 5 times and that has not done anything. I also unplugged the set for 5 min and that did not seem to help either.
I don't know if it was a power problem or what caused it to go into "default mode" I have my TIVO plugged into an APC 1500va UPS it is the basic backups so it does not have a sine wave output. I would not want to plug any of my audio equipment into it but I know the tivo has a switching power supply like a PC. Does anyone know if it is ok to plug the mitsu into the UPS?
hyperdoc 10-12-04, 08:19 PM DC_SnDvl:
I have a TIVO too. I noticed when turning TV on, nothing seems to come up but if I change the output mode (1080, 720...) it flashes and comes up. I posted this a minor issue but have not heard an answer.
Hope this might be your problem.
Anyone out there know what this might be.
DC_SnDvl 10-12-04, 08:36 PM No, I am not lucky enough to have an HR10-250 yet. Need to give the wife some recovery time between purchases. I figure if I don't setup netcommand and it is difficult for her to switch between OTA and the TIVO we can get one sooner.
I saw a post in the big thread about someone else with the same problem. he had his set swapped so he never found out what the problem was.

I would ask my dealer for an exchange or refund before I would have a two day old set repaired.

I too have a gigantic antenna on our roof that I have had since we bought this house in 1974. I replaced it once to one that has a rotator and a booster. Now, that I have it, I get HD from the Twin Cities, 30 miles away. I also can pick up stations in northern Iowa, LaCrosse WI, and EauClaire WI, when I rotate the antenna those directions. I have a question, I hope you can answer. I have the antenna aimed toward the Minneapolis, St. Paul stations and have scanned those into my 52725. Now if I rotate the antenna towards the other stations, ie LaCross, EauClaire, which are 180 degrees to the east, and scan for those stations, will I loose the others? It would be nice to have those to choose from without loosing the Twin Cities stations. Thanks: Lyle
Snowbum 10-13-04, 12:51 AM I am interested in purchasing a calibration program to calibrate my 62725 when it arrives. Currently I have a 62525. I have never used a calibration program and need some information about what they do and what to expect.
What will a calibration program actually do for me that I can not do in the service menu, Perfect Color menu, or by eye? It seems most people on this thread seem to prefer AVIA over DVE. Is this true and for what reason(s)? Where is everyone purchasing these programs? I have seen AVIA pretty cheap on Amazon.com. Also, if I do decide to go with AVIA, which version should I get? There is a very expensive Pro version as well as a Guide To Home Theater version? What are the differences between the two versions? Thanks in advance for your input.

Arbitter, I have the DirecTV HDTivo hooked to the HDMI port and run the sound through my AV receiver and have had no problems. Man I do love that HD Tivo:) !
Do you have the HDMI correctly set in the menu?
JimPeterson 10-13-04, 08:36 AM I've got a Moto 6208 cable box from Comcast connected to my 62725. When I connect via the DVI output network shows like NCIS last night and others seem dark with very low contrast.
The component out seems much better, but even still shows like NCIS are not as crisp as the baseball or football games.
I'm wondering if it could be either Comcast or the 6208 because other component sources look great.
Does anyone have an idea.

That's what I'm doing. My set had wierd squiggles in the center and I called PC Richards. They agreed to switch it out with no hassels.
BTW, I didn't really understand why everyone here is soooo impressed with HDTV until I set up my antenna.
I hate to admit it, but I watched 2 hours of crappy abc tv last night just because the picture was so clear.
I had heard of the "looking through a window" phenom and really think the mits does achieve it, especially with football.
** also to the poster asking about IKEA stands. My temporary stand is the IKEA stand with 6 bays beneath the tv. With the MITS and all the cables, it only sticks out about 20 inches. I think it's called pogli or something that rhymes with that.
Craig.
subwoofer 10-13-04, 09:44 AM Hey I'm the poster about IKEA for a Mits DLP. I've seen one that is called Oppli but I can only hold 154 lbs. http://www.ikea-usa.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=12&productId=11149&langId=-1&parentCats=10104*10174
There are stronger stands out there from other companies, but I just don't want anything that is too deep. The 52725 is 17" deep, so with some cables and a little bit a room for the tv, lets say it is 20" deep on the stand. I can live with that.

Does this stand have casters in the middle? Also you can increase the weight capacity greatly by adding metal "L" brackets on the inside and when assembling.
subwoofer 10-13-04, 10:43 AM I believe it does have casters in the middle, a total of 6. I too have used L brackets on stands such as the one I have now since my 32" tv weights alot and I have also removed the back cardboard that holds it together so that I can have my receiver in there. Long story
What stand is everyone using for their 52" or 62" Mits?
slobbie 10-13-04, 11:10 AM I just put together the Oppli last night and it does indeed have a center caster (5 wheels total). This stand should be plenty sturdy for when my 62 incher gets delivered today. However, only one choice of color(black stands are discontinued:mad:.) I obviously didn't spend nearly as much time researching a stand as I did the tv. I think this stand will be one of those long term "temporary" solutions. For $100, this is not a big deal to me.
If size remains the same i.e.: 62", then what exactly are the benefits of the 725 over the 525? Reading the Mits website pages for each lists exactly the same features for each. In fact the only difference I could spot was a line under 'Easiest to Use' that adds 'ChannelView' for the 525 and not for the 725. One thing I have read in threads/posts seems to indicate that the protective/anti-glare screen is better for the 725. Is this the only real difference? If I don't have small children to worry about hurting the main screen wouldn't I be better just taking the protective screen off either one and using the trim kit to clean up the look of the sides???
I just replaced the 525 with the 725. The anti-glare screen definately is improved. I had a problem with the HDMI connection on the 525 (I read in this forum others had the same problem) and have had no such problem with the 725. Also the rainbow problem appears to be reduced on the 725. Other than that the sets as far as I can tell are identical.
I finally got a chance to swing by my local Mits dealer to check out the 725. I guess I could see a slight improvement in glare, but it was still way to reflective for me.
scpanel 10-13-04, 11:37 AM I don't know if it was a power problem or what caused it to go into "default mode" I have my TIVO plugged into an APC 1500va UPS it is the basic backups so it does not have a sine wave output. I also have and APC 1500 and have my 52725, Krell HTS 7.1, Dish 921 and DVD player plugged into it and all work perfectly. It has already saved me a few times as I have has some 1-2 second power drops over the last few weeks and have heard it kick in flawlessly.
I really think all these DLP/LCD tv's need a backup because of the cooling fans
Had an Adelphia CableCard install scheduled for Columbus Day morning. Falling for the old "we'll be there in a half hour" routine, I ended up waiting from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. before finally being told they wouldn't be able to make it until Tuesday. Two installers showed up Tuesday at 5 p.m., and a mere 2 -1/2 hours later the CableCard was working.
Don't know if it's my imagination, but the channel changing seems to have gotten a tad slower. Also noticed that the parallel vertical bars on the side of ESPN-HD are zig-zagged in several places. Adelphia measured my signal as low, and is supposed to come out to boost the signal from the outside line today - we'll see if it improves. One hassle, the tv now tunes to all 200+ digital channels, even though about 100 are premium channels and do not display any signal. I guess I'll have to manually check the channels for signal and delete them.
Off topic, but it's funny - nowhere on AdelphiaSoCal's vast website is the word "CableCard" used. In fact, their SoCal HD page states:
"What, specifically, will I need to view HDTV with Adelphia? In order to view HDTV in true high-definition, you will need . . . a special set-top receiver from Adelphia, which will replace your current set-top receiver . . . a subscription to HDTV from Adelphia"
When I called for the CableCard, I was asked how I found out about it. In addition to the usual barrage of how CableCard is inferior to the box, at least 3 different people at different times tried to tell me I had to subscribe to one of their $20+ digital packages in order to get the card and HD reception. I feel really sorry for the uninformed cable customers.

I went to Home Depot and bought a sheet of MDF, had them cut it to my specs (for free)... sheet was $22
6 casters... $20
Can of black latex paint... $8
(wasted $10 or so trying to go the spraypaint route before switching to latex. I don't recommend spraypaint.)
Box of screws, sandpaper, etc... $5
(sanded all the edges for a worn/artsy look. Looks cooler in person)
$10 for a bamboo table runner to dress it up a bit.
strummer2k 10-13-04, 01:00 PM I have two questions:
1) I understand the basics of NetCommand. I have a somewhat older (5-6 years) Kenwood receiver which uses a single button on the remote to cycle through the various audio inputs. I assume I am outa luck as far as getting NetCommand to turn on the receiver and cycle to the corresponding audio input when I switch my 52725 to DVD?
I am trying to hold off buying a new receiver until I can afford one with HDMI switching, but even then, don't most receiver's have this same issue?
2) Is the slider near the top of your remote kinda loose, or have alot of play in it? The reason I ask is because the UE guys that delivered and setup the tv couldn't get the remote to operate the DVD player (again, a Kenwood) once they programmed it into the Tv. They claimed it was because the slider was so loose and wouldn't register when set to DVD. Is there something else I should try to do before going back to the store to get a replacement?
Thanks for any advice.

I wonder how easy it would be to paint my Oppli stand. It has a smooth glossy finish but maybe a coat of primer first will help.

I was considering the Oppli, but the birch color wouldn't match my decor and the Ikea near me (a couple hours away) didn't seem to have any in stock. This is the stand I modeled mine after.
Is the Oppli covered in some kind of laminate or is it bare wood? If it's bare wood, I imagine you could paint it. I'd question how it'd look if you painted laminate.
Can anyone tell me if I could use my computer on this DLP? I know it does not have a DVI slot, but I think I have read somewhere that the HDMI slot can have an adapter that allows two connections. Thanks for any help.

The Mits has a VGA plug or you can get a DVI to HDMI convertor. People have been very successful using both.
subwoofer 10-13-04, 03:19 PM Question everyone about rainbows:
Can CRT TVs get rainbows? I guess I see them when I watch a football game and the referees shirts seem to have a rainbow color in the white strip area of their shirts.

Nope. What you are seeing there is a convergence problem. These can usually be mostly eliminated but require a touch-up calibration every couple of months to keep them perfect. Rainbows are completely different.

Umm, unless I missed some recent development people have been less than successful with the HDMI port. The VGA port works quite well though.
FYI, the HDMI port seems to go through the same analog stages that the VGA does for some reason and is not a true straight Digital connection. So really there is no reason to go through the effort of purchasing a DVI->HDMI adapter and jumping through hoops to get it to display properly. At least these are the findings of others reported in the HTPC forum. I have not tried myself.

That's my understanding too.
FWIW: There are male DVI to male HDMI cables available. There are also "connector changer" adapters with female DVI to male HDMI.

How would I calibrate my tv to correct this? Also, maybe I need s-video cables instead of composite.

There should be an option in your TV's menu for setting convergence if it is an RPTV. If it is a driectview you will have to access the service menu to correct it which is a bit trickier. A better connection won't solve a convergence issue but it could give you a better picture overall.
Both of these items would be better discussed in other threads though.

Yeah, I have a huge skylight and many windows, so yeah, controlling ambient light is a problem. When I close my windows, it helps the glare a lot and is definitely tolerable. Plus, most of my TV watching is after work and the sun is down (or at dusk), so lighting isn't a big problem. I definitely don't want to go as far as removing the screen.
I don't have any more pics on me, but I'll try and take some more pics later.

First, get fine grit sandpaper to scratch the surface so the paint can grab onto something in the drying process. Then, whip the surface with a damp rag to get all of the loose particles off. After that, prime the surface with either an oil based primer or a latex Kilz so the pigment of the original color gets locked in. After the primer is dry then you are ready to paint. Hope this helps you out.
Thanks Kevin Barduca (A-1)
