View Full Version : Mitsubishi WD XX725 owners thread UMD_Terp 01-11-05, 11:15 PM you will not see a resolution number when receiving an HD signal from the internal ATSC or QAM tuner. It will simply say "HD"... pmorris1 01-12-05, 10:53 AM Thank you for your answer. There is so much to learn about this new HDTV I am just flying by the seat of my pants. But I just love my 52725 . I would recomend this set to anyone out there trying to decide which set to buy. I can't emagine getting any better picture on any other model. I looked at a lot of the new HDTV sets before I chose the Mitsubishi, you can buy a lemon with any product manufactured today. For those of you that can't decide what brand to buy because you read somewhere in a forum that there are problems. I say take the plunge and buy the 52725. You will not be disappointed. If you love love Football as much as I do, seeing it in HD on this 52725, it will knock your socks off. cnorth 01-12-05, 08:45 PM I am putting this here because I think it is a TV issue. I have a 62725 and am trying to get HD channels OTA via a indoor antenna(silver sensor). Here is the print out from antennaweb WPGH 53 FOX PITTSBURGH PA 50° 11.3 53 WPGH-DT 53.1 FOX PITTSBURGH PA 50° 11.3 43 I have the antenna connected to ANT-1. I go to the antenna menu on the netcommand and select ant-1 and air and have it memorize the channels. When it gets to the digital channels, channel 43 the one I want, I noticed it says added. When it is complete I do not get the HD channel as in it is not in the lineup. I DO get the analog channel and the picture is perfect no ghosting etc. If I go back to the antenna menu and scroll through the channels, I notice that 53-1 is deleted. If I manually add it and change to that channel the banner across the top says WPGH-DT DIGITAL BRODCAST but the screen is a light grey color but no picture. Since I can get the analog channel with a great picture and the digital one is coming from the same tower should'nt I get the digital one? Am I doing something wrong? Obviously the Tv is finding the digital channel because it knows the call letters etc. BTW - I do not get any other digital channels either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. UMD_Terp 01-12-05, 09:15 PM What is your firmware rev? Also, do you have the "Prefer Digital" option set? cnorth 01-12-05, 09:45 PM UMD_Terp, Firmware is .003 I have tried the prefer digital and it does the same thing. Contacted Mits today and they are sending out the latest firmware, although the guy did not think it would fix it. DCinDC 01-12-05, 10:23 PM If you see a banner and light grey as opposed to the blue screen then the station probably isn't broadcasting. I suggest you go to the HDTV forum here on AVS and look up the thread for Pittsburgh. You will probably find the answers you need there. Not all stations are broadcasting digital or HDTV all the time. Some broadcast digital at low power so it may depend how far you are from the tower (you may still get analog because it's at full strength). Also, the Silver Sensor is VERY directional so you need to make sure it's pointed correctly before you can expect to get anything either on the search or when you tune in a specific channel. Sometimes it takes a couple of seconds if you're adjusting it as well. Good luck! Originally posted by cnorth I am putting this here because I think it is a TV issue. Patch 01-12-05, 10:31 PM Although this might have nothing to do with the problem, to me NetCommand has a decidedly unintuitive feel to it. I just do not like the interface. In fact I am using an MX850 Universal remote that I have programed for that system and would not have even attempted to use NetCommand to run the whole system. I don't wonder if there is some programming step that is required that is causing your problem. BigAl 01-12-05, 11:49 PM cnorth, I've got the same problem... I haven't had a chance to call Mitsu yet on it. During the channel memorization process it adds digital channel 18 (which is a PBS channel that is mapped to 6-1) but after the scan neither 6-1 or 18-1 show up in channelview and it won't allow me to tune to the channel. This is a bug. Are you using full-blown netcommand with the IR control of your components? cnorth 01-13-05, 05:49 AM Big Al, No, I am not using the IR capabilities. I bought a Harmony romote to control the switching. Mits said I should get the firmware upgrade on Fri. I'll report back. jimrimback 01-13-05, 09:02 AM Originally posted by cnorth I am putting this here because I think it is a TV issue. AtlantaGatorLee 01-13-05, 10:19 AM TV Stands - I remember seeing a link to a stands thread but I can't seem to find it. Can someone point me to it? I am having a hard time finding one. She still does not understand why I needed to spend more than $1,000 on a TV :( pmorris1 01-13-05, 02:05 PM For those of you that might be looking for a really good indoor UHF antenna, I wanted to pass along my recomendation for the Silver Sensor. I live in an area that is not good for picking up over the air signals. Over many weeks I tryed just about every antenna that is available for indoor use. The TERK's, and all the radio shack stuff, jenson. ECT. The last antenna I tryed was the Zenith Silver Sensor. This is the same antenna as the phillips model. After looking at it my first thought was this will never work. It looks really cheap to me. Similar in design to the TERK HDTVI pro.The Terk look like it was made better. But I couldn't be happier with the silver sensor. It picks up all kinds of stations . You just have to point it in the right direction before you do your channel scan on the 52725. I got mine at Sears for $39.00, but you can get it on line at BUY.COM for $19.95 Lombard 01-13-05, 02:21 PM Anybody find a way to watch another source on their 725 while recording some HDTV from an OTA antenna through firewire to a DVHS? I actually have gotten that to work... I use CapDVHS to do the recording. It is totally manual, and requires you to turn on the TV for unattended recording. I tried tuning in to my OTA CBS channel and then hooking up my comp and starting up the virtual DVHS. Switched to another input on the TV and hit record on my computer, but didn't get anything. May be some configuration issues on the computer to work out. Gonna play some more this weekend. I did manage to record some CSI in HD. Haven't had a chance to review what I've got and play it back though. I'm using a mac, so at this point I'm just using the virual DVHS software included in Apple's firewire SDK. Need to do some more research on any work people may have done to expand it's capabilities. Regarding the digital audio, it's a problem with viewing OTA. No recorder even hooked up. I've tried various cables and several inputs on my receiver and got nothing. Another project for this weekend is to hook up my old DD/DTS decoder and see if it handles the audio properly. If so, the Pioneer's going back to Best Buy and Tweeter's going to make some extra money off of me when I go pick up a Denon AVR-2805. P.S. I am not familiar with Mac's, but I don't know if you can watch something else while recording off firewire if the Mits thinks that a DVHS is attached. I could be wrong here, but not sure. I was able to use the program I mentioned since it doesn't communicate with the TV (integrate with Netcommand to do the recording). THE "CAPDVHS" program is totally independent, so you operate it only with the computer - no scheduling of recordings via Netcommand. This is limiting though, since the TV must be on (as far as I can tell) to record anything, so unattended recording is only possible if you leave the TV on (obviously not an idea situation). There is an event timer in the software, so you just tell it when to start and stop recording. BuffaloDenny 01-16-05, 01:44 AM For those of you out there with a DirecTV HD Tivo with the 725, how do you guys set your SD broadcasts? I'm trying all kinds of combinations, and can't determine which would be best. How do you like to set the following: DirecTV: 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i? DirecTV: Full or panel? Mits format: narrow, standard, stretch, stretch plus, zoom, etc? I think the picture looks best in narrow, but I don't like it not filling the screen. Leaving the DirecTV unit in 720p also seems to distort the image. Any other considerations I am forgetting? I am running component for now until I get a replacement to get HDMI up and running. Thanks. turt 01-16-05, 03:24 AM Do whichever one you like best! I leave Tivo on 720p, panel. Standard on mits. Metagroboliser 01-16-05, 03:10 PM Ok, a couple of months into my 52725 and I love it! However, I have a couple of issues worth mentioning: 1- I have the 'tilt' problem. Anybody know the Mits service tel. no.? (I'm in the sf bay area). 2- The set's 'Narrow' setting for watching 4:3 material (mostly SD content on Comcast Digital) appears to be a hair too narrow: the image appears a tad squished horizontally. This can be verified when compared to viewing a corresponding 1080i signal on showing 4:3 content w/ black bars on the side using the 'Standard' setting: the bars are indeed narrower (i.e. the image is wider). Anyone else seeing this? (I have FW v. 4.03) 3- Occasionally, I see a strange image artifact. It looks like a vertical crease in the image which appears right of center, moves rapidly across the center of the image and vanishes. This artifact appears across all input types (DVD, SD, HD, PS2). Anybody seeing this? Thoughts? cheers. UMD_Terp 01-16-05, 04:43 PM The bars on an analog SD channel are always wider than a digital SD channel... Too bad Tweeter didn't carry it though, because they missed out on the TV sale too. Panzer948, that's a good looking ent. center. May I ask how much you paid? August West 01-17-05, 04:45 PM I got my 52725 just two weeks ago and have spent a LOT of time trying to chase down two forms of audio popping. I've read through much of this thread and see a lot of people with this sort of problem, but I didn't see any solutions to this. My two problems are: 1) Via the digital cable (SD only, not HDTV - I use OTA for HDTV) I get occasional poppings and cracking. I get none via OTA 2) Via my Panasonic S97 DVD player hooked up via HDMI I get popping on SOME DVDs but not others. This is worst when hitting the DVD menu button during playback. When the menu screen comes up a get a loud pop. This happened with the DVE DVD and others. I would think DVE would be pretty well produced. Ive written to Panasonic but have no response yet. I have not tried analog audio yet to see what this does. Does anyone have ideas? I have not checked my firmware version but does anyone know if the latest firmware fixes this? I also see that some thought that perhaps loose HDMI connections caused this - was this ever verified? Has anyone ruled out the possibility of bad grounds causing some kind of static build up and discharge? It seems that the evidence is "bad" digital processing somehow but I don't know. Perhaps its the cable provider (in my case Adelphia in the Baltimore area). The TV is great otherwise (no green push problems, tilt, etc.) but this popping is driving me nuts. My apologies if this is an old topic. Thanks for any help with this. gator33 01-17-05, 06:56 PM I have an audio question as well. I have the TV's coax digital output hooked up to my receiver as well as the red and white analog cables out of Audio 2. My receiver (Yammaha RX-V750) has an auto feature to automatically detect the signal and switch from analog to digital. Whenever I switch to an analog station, my receiver always autos to the digital output of the TV? Anyone know how I can solve this problem and have the receiver switch to the analog signal when I'm tuned to an analog station? chaos400ra3 01-17-05, 07:05 PM Originally posted by UMD_Terp It could be the broadcast itself... Whenever my tv's(samsung crt rp and mits dlp rp) internal tuner is used for analog, all 4:3 is compressed in width(wider bars). Using the cable box displays the same 4:3 image for analog and digital. UMD_Terp 01-17-05, 07:20 PM So with the cable box, are the side bars just as large on the digital channels as they are on analog, or are they as small as the digital bars on all channels? Panzer948 01-18-05, 11:07 AM My mits is working great, but last night I noticed the screen was tilted a little up on the right side. Banner bars and the TV's menu bars show this the best. I have had it for only 2 weeks, but this is the first I noticed it. The only thing I did different last night was temporarily unplug it for a few minutes (it had not been on previouslly all day so it couldn't have been hot). Does anyone know how to adjust the horiztontal and vertical bars? I can't find it in the manual anywhere. Do I have to call a service guy? Its a lot of money, but I got him to come down a little and these units are nice. It is desinged to release heat from the rear. My old one didn't have anything like this. All the shelves are wide and deep, allowing room for even my large AV Receiver. On my older one, I had to cut out the back for it to fit. The lighting is nice too. The curved glass doors allows the light to fill in the front of the cabinets all the way to the bottom. Its also adjustable I think up to 70". The picture quality is excellent, and I have learned to live with the tons of reflections. The fan noise, however, is KILLING ME. I spoke to Mitsubishi, and they said a volume comparable to a small air conditioner is normal - I think the lady must have been laughing when she said it. Has anybody that is comfortable with the fan noise put a sound meter to the TV? I am wondering what others are experiencing. With the TV off, the continuous fan runs at 55db, I am going to take a reading of the "TV-on" fan with the volume muted tonight. I am thinking of wrapping the bottom 1/2 of the tv-back in acoustic foam - how much trouble am I asking for by doing this? Is it very much worse than housing the tv snugly in a wall unit? Any other ideas on what else I can do about the fan noise? The bars are of equal width on both low (analog) and high (digital) channels off my comcast cable box. The content is definitely slightly squished horizontally ... one can validate this by noticing how circles (e.g. the History Channel logo) are stretched vertically slightly. Of course, 1080i 4:3 content don't exhibit this. Anybody else seeing slight vertical stretching on 4:3 SD content in "Narrow" display mode? cheers. August West 01-18-05, 01:24 PM With the TV off, the continuous fan runs at 55db, I am going to take a reading of the "TV-on" fan with the volume muted tonight. The fan noise is distracting for me as well, although I can't hear it with the unit off in my normal listening position (approx 10'). I have my TV in a corner and I'm sure that the corner adds several dB to the noise. I bought a bunch of pillows and packed them around the side of the TV between the walls and the TV and this helps quite a bit. I'll likely add more but I need to be careful not to block the fan or overconstrain the area from a convection standpoint. Relative to SPL, I only have a cheap Radioshack meter that does not measure below 50 dBA. I cannot pick up the fan noise at my normal listening position or even standing right in front of the set so it is less than 50. I can only pick it up if I put the meter behind the set and even then it is only in the 55 range. This is at the extreme low edge of the cheap meter and if it is not linear for its whole range it's possible that it is louder than that and it's just that my meter doesn't see it. I've also thought about acoustic paneling / foam / etc. but just have not gotten there yet. I would think this would be OK provided none of the cooling fans are blocked. I would not think the TV is designed for a lot of convective cooling over the surface of the TV casing itself assuming normal room temperatures. I could be wrong though. spiff72 01-18-05, 03:09 PM Originally posted by August West The fan noise is distracting for me as well, although I can't hear it with the unit off in my normal listening position (approx 10'). Units I saw in quiet HT stores that were in entertainment centers were pretty quiet. Ditto for those in the MIDDLE of a room where the noise was not being reflected back at the listener. In this second case I could hear the fan but not in a way that would be distracting, otherwise I would not have bought the TV. It won't go below 50 dB, Radio Shack model 33-2055. It won't register with the TV off unless I hold it about 2 inches from the right hand side, in the area where the filter would be (opposite the filter on the left side). Then it would be about 60 dBC (A weighting got nothing). With the TV on, the meter would read nothing right in front of the TV, but would register when I hold it up to the filter and vents on the left side - in this case I get about 65dBC. Again, I don't notice the noise, but my hearing isn't all that great either (my wife made me admit that!). Mine is not in an entertainment center, but it is in a corner of the room... I used DVE with good results although I have not adjusted the 6 individual colors yet and as a result the green is not quite accurate. Others here have noted that they will respond with firmware upgrades to those who have a specific problem (reset problem, cable card problem, or digital stations problem) rather than those who just ask for an upgrade. Not sure if that's true, but it's worth a try. Try the reset first though to make sure that's the problem. Otherwise, even if you can't return the set it's still under warranty and not turning on with remote or power switch is definitely a defect! SRFast 01-20-05, 12:34 PM pmorris1: I had a similar problem. I could not power on my 52525 using the remote unless I did a hard reset (unplug the power) of the set. Using the reset button corrected the problem occasionally, but not always. I finally determined the problem was caused by a bad CableCARD. Apparently the CC would try to update itself when the set was powered off and when it couldn't, it would hang the Mits processor. Only a reset (reload the firmware) would clear the condition. I pulled the CC and the set worked fine. The CC finally died and once it was replaced, the Mits functioned properly. Let's do the math: 30" stand + 21" to the middle of the WD-52X25 screen (measured from the base bottom to screen center) means the center of the screen will be 51" from the floor. If you are sititng, you will be looking up at the screen. DLP displays look best when viewed at eye level so IMHO, you need a stand that can put the set at that level. My stand is 15" high and the center of the screen is 37" from the floor. When sitting, I am viewing the screen at eye level. Is there something I am overlooking setting this up? It sounds to me like your TV is acting as a second monitor, with your windows desktop being EXTENDED onto your TV screen. Is the laptop display still on when you get the above described results? If so, try dragging a window off the right hand side of the screen and see if it shows up on the TV display. If so, this is your problem. To fix it, you will probably have to use the "function" switch on the laptop in combination with another key to toggle through the video modes. Otherwise, check the display properties, settings tab, and look for a checkbox where it says "Extend my desktop onto this monitor". You may also have to select the "icons" that represent monitor 1 and 2. You probably want monitor "2" to have that box unchecked. Video drivers can be different here, so be careful! Jeff radtek 01-20-05, 09:51 PM Jeff thanks for the info. The Mits is set as a second monitor and I have checked the box to extend my Windows desk top onto this computer. Should this be unchecked? I have been able to switch the icons to monitor2 (Mits) but then found the cursor stayed on the laptop so thats not a solution. I will try and see, like you said, to see if I can drag a window onto the Mits. spiff72 01-20-05, 10:35 PM Originally posted by radtek Jeff thanks for the info. I will try and see, like you said, to see if I can drag a window onto the Mits. You actually want it unchecked when you pick monitor 2, and you want #2 to be the primary monitor. BUT THIS CAN BE RISKY, since if something doesn't work right, you may not be able to see the display to change it back. I would try first to hook up the VGA to the TV, and figure out how on your laptop to toggle between the LCD screen and the external monitor. On my laptop, it is done by holding down the "Fn" key (it had "Fn" in purple text on it) in combination with the F4 key. Just look for the purple printing on the other keys and find one that looks like side by side monitors. Repeatedly holding down the Fn key and this toggle key will switch between the LCD and the external monitor (and in some computers it will show both at the same time under one of the toggle conditions). Obviously the key combinations are different on some computers, so yours may be different. And also, please note that I don't have my laptop hooked to Mits -- I have a desktop computer hooked to the TV :D Jeff radtek 01-21-05, 02:13 AM You actually want it unchecked when you pick monitor 2, and you want #2 to be the primary monitor. Radtek;) Glad I could help :D jdowney 01-21-05, 05:09 PM I just joined this forum today, although I have been reading posts for several weeks. First, I wanted to thank everyone for their posts. The information has been excellent and was extremely helpful to me in making my purchase decision. I have owned a 62725 for about two weeks and overall, I have been extremely happy with the purchase. I did have the tilt problem, but it was quickly corrected by a Mits authorized technician. The picture, especially in HD, is just amazing. Last night I tried the video setting posted by dwarren2 in post #2073. While I made some slight adjustments to the sharpness setting, the posted settings made a significant improvement to the picture. Last weekend, I set up Netcommand, and overall it has worked well. Two minor issues. The remote will not power up or power down the Dish 811 and my Toshiba VCR. This weekend, I will delete these items from Netcommand and re-add them using the "learn" feature. The other problem is that when I switch to antenna, the audio settings on my Denon 3801 do not change from the prior audio source. I have the digital coax from the Mits going into the Denon, and I have the analog cables going into the VCR-2 input on the Denon. I will go back this weekend and check the Digital in assignments on the Denon (to make sure that VCR-2 is assigned the digital coax). Did I miss a step when I set up the receiver in Netcommand (i.e. not indicating that the Antenna is to use the VCR-2 input on the receiver). If I am on the wrong track, I would appreciate a reply. Was there ever a conclusive answer to the digital-analog conversion on the Mits. I am using component cables on my Denon DVD-1910 and am curious as to whether I would notice an improved picture using a DVI-D to HDMI cable. Thanks corrales_avs 01-21-05, 10:55 PM I'm sorry to bug, my question is probably answered in this gigantic thread somewhere, but I thought a quick question might get my answer quicker. I really love the HD PQ with this set, however, I have a 6 year old denon non progressive dvd player and the PQ is not nearly as good (component cable input). I'm thinking of trying a "progressive scan" dvd player to see if the PQ improves. Is there a dvd player that anyone really thinks is good for the XX725 series? Should I get the best progressive player I can? Or should I go one step further and get an upscaling player? Thanks, RH bigz 01-22-05, 12:09 PM Just a note - Dump the Samsung 360 Hd receiver and and go with the new Direrctv Hd H-10 just released at Best Buy -- no flickering and great Guide. Most importantly - the HDMI to HDMI works great with my WD52725. The Samsungs DVI never worked right - poor picture - had to use Component input. My WD52725 worked great from day one and help from Mitsubishi on setting up Net Command was always responsive. They even sent me the 4.04 software to eliminate the note "did you replace the bulb " message on startup at times. ( I have had set since 9/18/04) et121212 01-22-05, 04:23 PM I have noticed from the firmware update that it copies some test patterns to the tv's memory. Does anyone know how to access the internal test patterns? Does anyone know if I can use the smart media card to flash the firmware? ( dowload the most recent firmware but don't have a compact flash card reader/writer so I am wondering if I can copy the software to a smart media card and flash it.) Thanks. derailed 01-22-05, 04:46 PM I'm completely new to the world of OTA reception. I know this model has an ATSC tuner, so I was under the impression I could just jack the antenna straight into the ANT-1 input and watch OTA HD. So far, though, I haven't been able to pick up any digital channels. For instance, I can pick up standard Fox on 29. The DTV broadcast is listed as 29.1, but when I input 29-1, I don't get anything but a grey screen. Is there anything in particular that I need to do to pick up OTA DTV on this set? Thanks in advance for any advice. corrales_avs 01-22-05, 05:21 PM Derailed, you are going to be amazed (if you're like me) at the ability of this set to OTA. The problem you're having is that you're not using the actual UHF or VHF channel, 29.1 is not really the channel that your HD is being broadcast on. The MITs will rename the channel to 29.1 once you find it and "memorize" it. Here's my recommendation, go to www.titantv.com, register, type in your zip code and copy down or print out the list of HD stations in your area. What you will find, is that the HD stations will be on channels like 26, 35, 41. You can then go to those channels directly and you should see HD (assuming HD is being broadcast). Another thing you can do is to go to "setup" and select the antenna. Your set will then scan all the antenna signals received and set them up for you to find. I hope this helps. RH corrales_avs 01-22-05, 05:24 PM Derailed, one last thing, if you're like me, you may find some stations will need the antenna position to be slightly tweaked in order to pick up all the stations. Believe it or not, I use a simple 6' piece of coax as my antenna and I get all the local HD signals? I imagine that San Antonio should have a pretty clear "line of sight" to its HD transmitters much like Albuquerque. (The big city folks have tall buildings and such which can interfere.) Good luck. RH derailed 01-22-05, 05:47 PM Thanks a lot corrales, I was not at all aware of this fact! This should definitely help me out. BigAl 01-23-05, 12:34 AM jdowney, you say the power buttons aren't working... most devices have power toggle buttons so the TV will not automatically turn them on and off for you. You turn them on an off by bringing up the device menu, highlighting the device you want to turn on and then hitting the power button. On the Antenna... during the AVR netcommand setup make sure you correctly learn the command to switch the reciever to VCR2 and then make sure you specify that audio 2 output from the TV is going to VCR2 input on the reciever (I think this is the last step of the AVR setup process in Netcommand). I used DVE to set up my TV and left the contrast around 38, with the brightness set properly using the PLUGE. Yesterday I turned the contrast down to 22 or so and turned up the brightness to compensate, as far as I could without washing out the picture. While the resulting picture is darker than I would like the rainbows are much improved. The Definedge does not seem to matter, at least for the short time I tried plaything with it. Has anyone else tried any experimentation with this? I'm curious if those who see the rainbows tend to have higher contrast settings than those who don't. I ended up using some of the setting posted previously (with a bit of tweaking with DVE). I had trouble with the brightness or contrast - I can't recall which one - it was the second one that you would do within DVE. I used to see the rainbows all the time, but just didn't pay much attention to them. I have noticed that lately, I seem to see them less often or (more likely), I have just gotten used to them. Patch 01-24-05, 03:03 PM It is truly amazing how differently we all use our eyes to see. You would think that this rainbow thing would be all of us or none of us and that is far from the case. I tried Apocalypse Now last night as that is one of the DVDs' that has some scenes considered problematic if you can see the rainbows and I have viewed some black and white DVDs' as well. I have not seen them. I did catch a glimpse one time when the NY Jets were still in the playoffs or it was last regular season game. I caught them in the twin white stripes that run down the Jets green uniform pants leg as one of the D-linemen just came out of his three point stance. I caught it just for an instant and just in that game and that was it. What amazes me is that the spectrum runs from "sees them constantly" to "not at all" to my "just once". The reason I ask is that I'm considering the denon 3910 dvd player but now the 2900 can be had for almost half the price. If the 3910 doesn't really offer improved video throught the Mits, then getting the 2900 seems to make sense. BTW, If you own the 2900, are you satisfied with it's redbook cd performance? Thanks Craig So how was this resolved? I am having image issues with my 3910 and my 62725. Dark scenes look awful, no matter how the settings in the tv or player is. Someone suggested the problem may be the HDMI, because it goes from digital to analog back to digital. Will the image look better or just as good as the 720p HDMI if I just hook up the player with component? TomTx 01-25-05, 09:17 AM Originally posted by DCinDC It works for me. For example, when my remote is set to the DVD, pressing the DEVICE MENU button brings up the main menu for the DVD. Not all devices have menus, of course. Also works fine for me. Remember you have to set up Netcommand, some devices don't have their own menu, and some if not all require you to hit the DVICE MENU button twice. BB_Mike 01-25-05, 11:41 AM Two things to point out: Like DCinDC said, if you have your remote setup as a universal remote (using the top slider switch), the Device Menu will activate that command for whichever pre-set manufacturer code you selected (from that large list of 3 digit numbers) However, if you do setup net command, it's like having the TV change that top-slider switch for you. So whatever device you are viewing, the TV automatically brings up that particular device menu. For instance, a cable box, or a DVD player, TiVo. For net commmand, you can learn that "Menu" button to be something else. Hell, you can even make it the channel 4 button. I cheated and learned the "guide" button with Mits' NetCommand to be my DVD players "closed captions". This way, I can toggle them on and off quick and simple. August West 01-25-05, 01:36 PM I tried Apocalypse Now last night as that is one of the DVDs' that has some scenes considered problematic if you can see the rainbows and I have viewed some black and white DVDs' as well. I have not seen them. I have watched Apocalypse Now recently and the worst sequence is the beach party scene at night right before the helicopter attack on the village. With my contrast up around 38 I see rainbows almost literally constantly through that scene, making it unwatchable. With my contrast at 22 I only see a few rainbows during that sequence. Try it again with a higher contrast perhaps (assuming you're trying to see the rainbows) maxvengeance111 01-25-05, 10:03 PM So I went to Ultimate where I got all my gear. I believe the Denon 3910 has the macroblocking problem that might be what you're describing. If so, it has more to do with how your DVD player is upconverting the signal than with the HDMI. I find that the Mits upconverter does a great job. I have an old Sony DVD player with progressive scan and component output. I was going to buy a new DVD player when I got the Mits, but the picture is so good as is that I'll stick with what I've got and get a good quality DVD player that doesn't upconvert when my current player dies. corrales_avs 01-25-05, 11:01 PM August West: I'm not sure what started your question, but a good scene for me and Rainbows is "Meet Joe Black - Chapter 4" This is a dinner scene where the seated diners are wearing black suits and such and there are very white candles in the middle of the table. After going over this issue numerous times with Mits and having a service call, I found and re-read your post. I added my DVD-Recorder as a "VCR", and can now record using NetCommand. Interesting that Mits tech support, including senoir tech support at the 949 number, could not or would not answer my questions. Is there a significant PQ advantage to go with the Cablecard over the HD STB to warrent losing some of the 2-way STB features? I have to wait until Feb. 11 to get a Cablecard but I may try and get a HD STB out of the local office this weekend. 2. SD picture quality has been better than expected so far. Currently I have the main cable split into 2. One goes to a digital STB and then to Ant 2. The other goes straight into Ant 1. I think the picture is slightly better without the STB. Any recommendations on optimizing the SD PQ on these units (connections, settings, etc.) Any input is appreciated. Thanks. CTracer CTracer, I'm probably one of the lesser-qualified people to be responding because I don't have the 725 or Adelphia cable. I have the 825 (which is basically the 725 with a PVR) and Comcast cable. The reason I'm responding is that I use *both* a cable card and the STB. Comcast doesn't charge me any extra for the card, since I already have the box, so it wasn't a big deal. Here are some of my thoughts and observations. 1. My STB is a dual-tuner DVR, so I can record two programs (via the box) while watching a third via the cable-card. To me, this was an advantage of having both the card and the box. 2. Using the component-out of my cable box, I can't discern much difference in HD pix quality between that and the HD Pix from the cable card. Interestingly, a similar discussion is going on in the "825 Help" thread. Someone has suggested that the pix, especially SD, are better through the card than they are through the box. I wrote back saying I hadn't paid much attention to the SD differences, because I watch mostly HD. But I'm going to try a comparision to see if SD *is* really better through the card. 3. I considered the card alone, but with the Comcast STB, I get a full TV-Guide. The channel guide in the 525/725/825 is, in my mind, somewhat useless. (Eventually, Mits is supposed to offer a TV Guide upgrade for the 825, but it hasn't shown up yet, so you're not missing anything.) I don't know what Adelphia offers guide-wise, but if you're the type that likes more advanced guide functionality, you're only going to get it through the box. Just my thoughts. Good Luck. - Tom CTracer 01-29-05, 12:07 PM Thanks for the replys. I picked up a SA3250 HD STB this morning and I hooked it up via component connections. Based on a quick scan the SD PQ seemed to be better than through the coax connection. I have not had a chance to view HD content yet (limited channels here in CT). The SA 3250 has DVI output but it is not enabled. There are also 2 firewire connections but I'm not sure they will be any better than the component connection. SA is recommending the component connections in their instructions. I'm not aware of a HD box with a DVR being available in this area yet. I'll keep you posted. Ct Racer Gordon Shumway 01-29-05, 11:28 PM My parents just took delivery of their 725 this afternoon, and the Cox cable guy showed up a couple of hours later to install the new cable card. I was scared to death after reading this thread but we're very happy to say that we see NO rainbows, no bright spots, and it's very quiet overall. Best of all NO major glare problems..even with three lamps on in various areas in the room. I was also scared that this was the FIRST install of a card this guy has ever done, and there were some nervous moments listening to him chatting with the main office (oh and he got two back to back calls from his bitchy girlfriend) but I'm happy to report that we are getting all the HD channels now and even the non HD stuff looks amazing! Now I want one!! G. Shape 01-30-05, 04:33 PM Well, I picked up a WD52525 today. Best Buy had a killer deal on the TV today, [msrp - a freaking ton]. I was going to price match it at Tweeter, since the guy there spent about an hour with us yesterday. When he showed us the detail you got with the Mitsu compared to the Samsung 74 series, I wanted the Mitsu. I wanted to get the TV at Tweeter, but they aren't carrying it anymore. And I couldn't justify the extra price of the 725, which they do still carry. So I went to Best Buy to get it. Delivery is on Wednesday. I'll be watching for bright spots. Thanks for this thread, guys. I also got the rebate for the trim kit from Best Buy. So they are still offering it, apparently. So the display is awesome. The staggering array of inputs is amazing. I just hope that the Mitsu firmware doesn't bite me in the ***. :) Edit: got back to this post, finally http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=4682599#post4682599 and realized that I made a mistake typing in the price I got for the TV. If you want to know, go to BestBuy.com . Let's just say that it is a good time to buy it. :) ttownsend 01-30-05, 06:16 PM Originally posted by Shape Well, I picked up a WD52525 today. As with any new model, there are bugs that we're all hoping Mits will fix in the near future. Even so, the out-of-the-box release isn't so bad. I agree with you, Mits hasn't skimped on the inputs. When I first got my 52725, I picked up a Toshiba upscaling DVD player. I watched it for a while using the HDMI cable, then using component cables. To my eyes, I got a better picture from a 480P signal coming over the component cables. Apparently the TV did a better job of upscaling to 720P than the DVD player did. I returned the Toshiba DVD player and picked up a Sony Progressive Scan player for less than half the cost. I'd recommend you do the same thing (not returning the player, doing a comparison). Decide which picture you prefer. You can still use your DVD player's digital audio out to feed the signal to your receiver, even if you are using HDMI. Just turn off your TV speakers for the HDMI input. Shape 02-02-05, 04:34 PM I finally got my WD-52525. This thing has an unbelievable picture out of the box. The greens are a little strong. The picture from my DirecTV Tivo is really good! I'm surprised. The stretch modes are some of the best I have ever seen on a widescreen. Artifacts are obviously more visible on the new TV than on my old 4:3 SD WEGA (sold it 1 minute before the new TV arrived). But that is to be expected. I'm not looking for miracles here. I still have to work through AVIA. DVDs look awesome, even out of my bargain basement progressive scan DVD player. I'm amazed. The store displays really don't give this TV justice. garciab 02-02-05, 04:36 PM Originally posted by Lombard You can still use your DVD player's digital audio out to feed the signal to your receiver, even if you are using HDMI. Shape 02-02-05, 04:41 PM Is there a quick way to turn closed captioning on and off? If/when I get a new DVD player, I'll probably go with a high quality progressive scan with component unless they make something where you can turn the upscaling off and send the signal over HDMI or something like that. Shape 02-03-05, 09:43 AM I watched the first disc of Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition last night. I agree! Who needs an upconverting DVD player? Even my $45 Samsung progressive scan DVD player provides a stunning picture. I'm going to use my home theater PC as an upconverting DVD player using FFDShow, but I'm starting to wonder if it is really worth the hassle of turning the computer on to watch DVDs (other than the ones I plan to rip to the 320GB hard drive, that is) when the TV does such a good job with a 480p signal. If I do buy a new DVD player in the future, I'm going to wait for a Blu-Ray player. Hopefully one will come out with a firewire port so I don't have to take up my only HDMI input. :) I was a bit worried about delay with the WD52525, but there is none that I can see. I played a few playstation games yesterday with no delay. And Unreal Tournament 2004 through the PC input has no delay. I love the Reduced 1 setting on the TV for the PC input. My video card has a DVI output, but I'd hate to lose the functionality of the reduced format settings. The few High Definition clips I downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/content_provider/film/HDVideo.aspx were even more breathtaking than the DVDs I played. I think I might have to buy T2. :) I'll say it again, the number of inputs on the back of the Mitsu sets is staggering. I haven't had to use my A/V receiver for any video switching at all, which has reduced cabling a ton, and has reduced noise on the cabling too, I am sure. I am, however, running out of digital audio inputs to the receiver. :) All 4 are in use on the back, and the front one will probably be used by the HTPC. I have noticed a very slight tilt to the picture. It might be trapezoidal, even, which I can fix. And I have a very minor bright spot. It will take a bit more staring at black screens for me to decide if it is worth replacing the set over. I couldn't even notice it with a picture on the screen, even a dark one. My set had an August 2004 build date, which surprised the hell out of me. I still had the 001 firmware! I called up Mitsu immediately after delivery. I explained that I was getting a Cablecard on Saturday so I could watch the superbowl on Sunday. He was quite sympathetic and said he would get the new firmware out immediately, and that I should either get it Thursday or Friday. Speaking of delivery, Best Buy's delivery was amazing. I guess that the free delivery means that they drop it at your door. I paid $34, and they unpacked the TV outside, then carried it in the house. It was probably the most efficient operation I have ever seen. They had a sling that they used to carry the TV in the box down the snowy hill (I snowblowed a path through our yard) and to the entrance to the house. Then they unpacked it faster than I thought was possible. They carried it in, with the leader giving instructions to the guy behind him with every single step he took. They might have been at the house for a total of 7 minutes. Sorry for the rambling post. I've had a lot of stuff running through my head, and this was the first chance I had to type it in. :) BenK 02-03-05, 01:18 PM Originally posted by DCinDC I agree. So far, I just turn down the brightness. Any other ideas? Any kind of a settings/preference menu for this? Also, Net Command, when setup for the an Audio Receiver, is way too slow with the volume control. Perhaps my original Yamaha remote actually has two IR signals? One for slow change, and one that kicks in after the button is held for X number of seconds. I thought the TV's volume control was wacky and had a mind of it's own, but the AVR setup via Net Command is like watching paint dry. captainx0r 02-05-05, 08:13 PM Anyone ever lose an HD channel with the cablecard? I have comcast and lost 825 (FOX) and 882 (INHD2) the other day. I called, they tried something, it didn't work. They escalated, got a call back, 825 now works, but no 882. 881 (INHD1) works fine, so do all the other HD channels. I've been talking to the same guy for the past two days and he's stumped. He mentioned something about a new problem they just discovered with the Mitsubishis where they'd lose channels, but hasn't brought it since the beginning - must not be matching symptoms. It didn't sound right to me. I can't add the channel, because as the manual says, with the cablecard, the lineup is pushed by the cable co. I'm at a loss, and so is Comcast. I have a feeling Mits CS will just read the manual back to me if I call. Did you try resetting the tv with the little button on the front? I don't have a cablecard, but I have lost digital channels (both OTA and cable), and resetting the TV brought them back (without having to rescan the channels). I don't think this could hurt anything to try (assuming there is nothing special about resetting the TV with a cablecard). There must be a transmission problem with Fox-HD/705 because I've not been able to get it consistently since Thursday-Friday. I have an SA CableCARD from TWCNYC and when I tune to 705, it gives me the program title, but nothing appears. I eventually get the message "Channel off air or does not exist, try another one." Occasionally the signal does come in, but not very often. I have the same problem with three Showtime channels. I have an SA 8300HD DVR as a back up so I am not stressing out. I don't watch Fox very often, but it would be nice to have it work again. BTW, I have the Mits 52525. Regards.....JL Shape 02-05-05, 10:36 PM Take the cable card out of the set and let the set learn the cable channels (digital, too). Then search through the channels for FOX. The local channels shouldn't be scrambled, so you won't need the cablecard to receive them. The cablecard remaps the original channel numbers like 110-2 to whole numbers like 705. So chances are that the digital channel you are looking for has a sub-channel. ttownsend 02-06-05, 09:12 AM Originally posted by pmorris1 Last week I was telling about sometimes my set would not turn on , and I had to unplug the power plug from the wall, and plug it back in. ..... These occurances have been infrequent, but none-the-less annoying. At first, Mits sent me (what was at that time) the latest firmware upgrade ... 5.02. I don't believe it had anything to do with the new firmware revision ... I just believe that the firmware didn't do anything to fix it, and the set was simply having one of its "moments'. So, I was within my 60-day Tweeter replacment. They came out and replaced the entire set. No problems for about 4 weeks, but then it happened again. Of course, when they replaced the set, the new one was shippped with the original (5.01) firmware ... so now I'm back to "square one". So, I was thinking of calling Mits again and finding out if they have any firmware later than .02 for the 825. Please let us know what luck you have with the .04 revision. The latest is random power offs with a red LAMP led requiring a reset. Fun. Had to panic on Saturday when I turned on my 52725 (got it in October) and had nothing but a greenish tint with vertical lines across the entire screen on all inputs (still had sound though). Tried resetting, no success. Called my dealer and said "My brand new big-screen did NOT just blow up 24 hours before the Superbowl!!!" They had me unplug the set (it's normally plugged into a TrippLite HT1500 UPS) for about 10 minutes to see if the processor had choked and would reset itself. That did the trick (whew!). I have a problem like this about once a month or so (normally the unintended red-light power off, have to reset and/or unplug). Also, periodically I have to relearn all the OTA channels again after it "loses" all the digital stations. I'm not going to return the set (love it too much and don't have any of the problems like bright-spot or tilt), but I'm seriously considering the 5-year warranty for $399, just in case. Is there a fix to any of these issues with firmware? I have the .02 or .03 right now (don't remember which). I think I have .03 for my TV (62525), and I have never seen the red lamp light come on. I just have the occasional "lose the digital channels" problem, and a reset will usually get them back without having to relearn the channels. I have assigned names for all of my analog cable channels, so relearning would erase all of that work. I do have to unplug the TV on rare occasions to get it to reset (when I lose the digital channels as an example), since the green light will just flash indefinitely on some reset attempts (normally it only flashes for about 60 seconds). I love my TV too, and I did buy the extended warranty for it. The superbowl looked great last night! hilltopper72 02-07-05, 12:04 PM Guys, I had a strange thing happen last night while watching the Super Bowl. At the start of the 4th quarter the screen on my 52525 just went black for the FOX HD feed. All the other HD channels on my TWC were fine. I was in the process of using the SA 8000 HD DVR to save it for my son to watch today. Turned over to standard Fox to watch the 4th Qtr and kept switching back to see if the HD FOX came back, after about 30 minutes it reappeared- 1 minute to go in the game, without doing any resetting or turning off the set. Called TWC this morning and no one else had complained. Has anyone had something like this happen before, I'm wondering if it's the TV, STB or TWC? 2left 02-07-05, 12:26 PM Originally posted by tbone526 Had to panic on Saturday when I turned on my 52725 (got it in October) and had nothing but a greenish tint with vertical lines across the entire screen on all inputs (still had sound though). Sounds like you might have had the "candystripe" pattern. spiff72 posted a great picture in this thread. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=4581198#post4581198) I haven't had that pattern occur since I upgraded to the .04 firmware. When I did have it, changing the channels made it go away. I have the extended warranty. I don't know if I'll ever use it, but with all the little glitches in rear projection dlp's, the peace of mind alone may be worth the price. I never worry about strange things going on with my $4000+ tv because I know it will be covered. As a point of comparison, I have a dvd-recorder that has problems outside of its 90 day warranty, and I am pulling my hair out over it even though it only cost me $300. HTBruceM 02-08-05, 02:11 AM Mits customer complaint <<RANT ON>> Sure would be nice if Mits support would have a major change in behavior and start posting firmware along with release notes and bug fix lists. You just KNOW they have this stuff documented already... What an anal retentive set of policies (always done things "this" way). Mits, if you're going to design and produce something with SOFTWARE & FIRMWARE embedded, then it seems to me you'd better start behaving as if software is actually part of your product. Can you imagine if PC software were handled like Mits does? "No Mr Customer, I cannot possibly send you the latest BIOS just because you want it... you first need to tell me what problem you have before I'll consider sending you a new flash device".. "No sir, I cannot possibly send you the files over the Internet; you must first FAX us a signed license agreement, then we will FedEx a new flash part to your house." AS IF there would actually be anyone at Mits who might actually suggest "Gee boss, maybe we could gather some useful information from those crazy internet boards...." Nope, can't do that; too radical. Someone might have to change the way they do something !!! <<RANT OFF>> Sorry members, guess I just needed to let off some steam.. UMD_Terp 02-08-05, 08:07 AM hehe... the license agreement no longer needs to be faxed in... I bet they got tired of this back in September of last year with the fiasco that was... faxes not getting through, lost faxes, etc... THAT was a nightmare. But I agree with you... there is no reason as to why they couldn't put the FW on their website and have it downloadable to a flash card that the user provides... Not only would that save them shipping costs on those cards, but also cut down greatly on the number of calls they recieve... I was worried that if I had the TV on an input other than an antenna that it would record that source. However, it seems to remember what antenna source you last selected, and what channel you were on. That is the one that it records when you hit the record button. This is very handy right now. I have a media pc, but I don't have an HD capture card yet. It is a pain since you need to have the TV on (I assume, at least), though, and you have to select the right channel to record. However, I noticed when I cut the TV on, the cable box is briefly on channel 240 like it is programmed, then turns to channel 3. This can only be the TV (net command) doing this because when I manually cut the cable box on and off while leaving the TV on, it will always come on to its assigned channel (240). Does anyone know where the settings are to correct this? Thanks TrojanCain 02-15-05, 03:25 PM I started a thread about the 52725, then saw this thread. My mistake, and I will ask the questions I have here in hopes someone can shed some light on them... Does anybody know when the new line of Mitsubishi DLP's are due to come out? I purchased a 52725 over the past weekend but am not actually having it shipped into a new home until near the end of April. If a newer model is due out before then, I may just upgrade it before it is shipped. Any thoughts? Also, does anyone know what formats the memory card slot recognizes? Thanks for any assistance. BigAl 02-15-05, 04:43 PM Panzer948, I've seen the same thing. The TV would always change the channel to 3 at startup... I don't know how to correct it. I think it's a bug. I should have called Mit's tech support but hadn't gotten around to it. TrojanCain, usually the new Mit's TVs show up around Thanksgiving. eawil 02-15-05, 06:28 PM I own the 525, but will probably be getting a 725 series for the new HT room being built. That being said, how is the glare on the 725? My wife and I are getting "killed" by the glare on the 525. Thanks for the info. Also if anyone has any advice on how to get rid of the glare without taking off the diamond shield, that would be appriciated as well. :) IFLYSWA 02-15-05, 07:08 PM Originally posted by eawil I own the 525, but will probably be getting a 725 series for the new HT room being built. I have windows with no curtains (just apartment-style blinds) behind me, and I took my shield off because there was still plenty enough glare to bug me...and I was coming from a direct view 35" Mits. I am moving in the near future and hope to have better light control so I can put it back on. Typically, Mits announces its new models in April. However, they don't show up in retail stores until July at the earliest. 2. What do you mean by formats? The manual says it accepts JPEG pictures up to 128Mb, MP3s and WMA7 audio files. There are four memory card slots, not one; quoting from the manual: CARD-1 slot is compatible with both MultiMediaCard™ (MMC) and Secure Digital (SD) cards. CARD-2 slot is compatible with SmartMedia™ cards. CARD-3 slot is compatible with CompactFlash® cards and CARD-4 is compatible with MEMORY STICK™ cards. pdubyu 02-15-05, 11:52 PM Hi all, I am new to this thread and just ordered a 52725 for my new house. I've got about 2 weeks before delivery and have a few questions: 1) Trim kit - Do I just call Mitsu to order this? Is there a part number? The guys at Tweeter didn't know how to order it, nor did any of their TVs have it. 2) Stand suggestions - I'm open. Does anyone have the OEM one? How wide or deep are those shelves? They look really small in the pictures and I can't find the shelf dimensions anywhere. What did you guys do? 3) All this talk of firmware, resets, etc. Is there a FAQ of outstanding issues for me to get caught up on or can some kind heart provide a summary. 4) Does anyone have those Omnimount or Sanus platforms or a better non shelf solution for mounting a center channel speaker? I'm really excited about this TV and can't wait to set it up. Thanks for your help. CADCONV 02-16-05, 12:46 AM Looking into getting this TV myself. Really impressed with the PQ and connections. It will be used in a two window living room sitting between both windows. Glare shouldn't be an issue. the shield has to stay. To many little things that can get to the screen in my house. I'm like pd...any issues I should be sure to ask the store or manu. dates that I should check for. 112 pages is a lot to read through.... Great PQ, no problems so far with the software, etc. If you have a light source directly behind the TV, you will get some glare. 90% of my viewing is at night so it's no big issue. I have a bay window directly behind my viewing area and in the daytime I have to watch TV from an angle to avoid the glare. I believe you can order parts (trim kit) off of the Mits website, do a Google search for that. Mits Stand Size: I have the 52525 stand and it is only large enough for a STB or small components. Forget about using it for any components like a DVD, etc. I have a small center speaker on the top shelf and my STB on the bottom. For all my other components I use a matching A/V rack (I forget the brand) that sits alongside the Mits. CTracer BigAl 02-16-05, 09:23 AM I would recommend going to Best Buy to get the Trim kit. Ordering it from Mitsu is more expensive. It should be $50 and I think Mits charges 80+ if you order thru their parts dept. I really hate the OEM stand. The shelves are too shallow and too narrow. I went with a tech craft PTV58 Black stand. Some others to look at include: Omnimount/Furniture works Cosmic VT2 or G362. Bello AVS-2552, AVSC-2050, AVS-522. Sanus PFDV. The Samsung xx63 stand should also work... it's expandable to handle most sized TV's. Issues: -Tilt. The picture was rotated on first gen sets. I haven't heard that this is much of a problem lately. The fix is relatively easy. Pretty much a non-issue now. -Resets. The first couple batches of TV's had problems with resets, the TV would reset itself or wouldn't power up and you had to do a manual reset. I haven't heard of this being an issue on current sets. Fix is to get a firmware update from Mits. Pretty much a non-issue now. -Loosing channel lineup. On occasion when using the internal tuner the digital channel lineup will disappear (OTA ATSC or Cablecard channels). Short term fix is to reset the TV. The latest firmware may fix this issue but I don't know that for sure. -The biggest outstanding issue that I'm aware of is the Brightspot issue. Some folks have a football sized brightspot on their screen that shows up in black or very dark scenes. I haven't heard of a resolution yet. I have a slight brightspot, it isn't noticeable to me while watching shows so I don't worry about it. Some people have a bigger problem than others. Work with a store and salesman that you think will be responsive in case this is a problem on your sets. I think this was a bad run of sets about a month or two into production but just to be safe ask about the stores return policy. I am not a fan of the Sanus TV top shelf. It's plastic and particle board, it's not very adjustable, it's not sturdy and I think it looks cheap. The Omnimount is a very sturdy unit with a good range of adjustment. We are using one of these on a Mits diamond DLP at the store I work at. It's a good unit. John Williams 02-16-05, 10:14 AM For my 62725, I went with a BDI Axis 8027 (http://www.bdiusa.com/avfurniture/axis_8027.shtml) stand. Works great, and the bottom shelf is big enough to fit my VMPS 626SE (http://www.vmpsaudio.com/qso626p.htm) Center Channel. Thanks again! eawil 02-16-05, 11:37 AM Forgive my ignorance, but what is the trim kit? tbone526 02-16-05, 11:58 AM Originally posted by eawil Forgive my ignorance, but what is the trim kit? Many people are bothered by the glare on their Mitsu DLP's because of the glass (?) shield covering the screen. The 525 is the worst offender. The 725 (which I have) has an "anti-glare" shield, but still has issues. In my rec room downstairs if I have a light source behind me and the rest of the room is dark, it's very noticeable. The 825 is supposed to be better than either, but I have no knowledge. Since the shield is easily removed, many people choose to remove it rather than deal with the glare. However, this leaves the front of the set looking a little unfinished and ugly. Mitsubishi has come out with a trim kit that replaces the border around the screen but has no shield, improving the looks of the TV. My personal preference is to leave the shield on. I can control the lighting and glare, and I prefer to protect the screen from the little maniacs that run around my rec room. pdubyu 02-16-05, 03:53 PM Big Al, Thanks a lot for your summary. The PQ and connectivity options really sold me on this set. I’ll take your stand suggestions to heart and cross my fingers with the bright spot issue. mrhph 02-16-05, 06:58 PM Originally posted by pdubyu Hi all, ... 4) Does anyone have those Omnimount or Sanus platforms or a better non shelf solution for mounting a center channel speaker? You can get it at CC, but you can find one cheaper online. BenK 02-17-05, 09:38 AM For people with the 62725 what are your viewing distances? Would 10' be too close for this set? videobruce 02-17-05, 10:53 AM I haven't followed this thread for awhile, so if it came up before I missed it. Question to all you Mits owners; haven't you noticed the overall 'green' tint to the picture? It is one of the first thing s I see every time I have seen this set in the stores. I don't mean in the corners, but a overall green cast to the image. I do understand many other sets especially LCD's have a tendency to be blue, but this has a tendency to be green. Even after reducing the green and yellow controls, it still has a green cast to it. Input? I have noticed a slight green halo effect around people on poor quality (and primarily analog) signals, and I am semi-cursed with seeing rainbows when looking away from the screen, but that's it. -Randy GeeWhiz1 02-17-05, 12:14 PM Howdy! I've been lurking around here for a while and decided I really should put out my two cents. We took delivery of our 52525 on December 1st. We live in an area where we are doubtful for OTA signals, so we rely on DishNetwork. We bought a 921 receiver/DVR and had it installed on the day after we got the set. Just for reference, I run my entire set up through my Onyko THX surround receiver. I do not use NetCommand. I do have a Panasonic DVD Recorder hooked up, but haven't used it with this set up. Since it won't record in HD, we are working on how to get a decent SD signal into it. We did not get the Mitz stand for our set. We bought a plasma stand that got it up higher and gave us room for all of our equipment. I am still blown away by this set. Yes, we have some minor issues. But overall, I feel like we made the best choice. Our room is long and narrow with a sliding glass door that faces east. The set faces across the narrow portion of the room (10' - 12' distance). We have some glare issues in the morning. Closing the blinds generally resolves those issues. We won't take the glare screen off until the grandkids are older. Since there is a new grandchild on the way, that probably means we won't ever take it off.:p I have the good, old smudges issue. About 6 smudges have shown up with only one in the center of the screen. I have called the service tech to come look at it. I am hoping a good cleaning inside with take care of the problem. So far, I really haven't had any issues that I felt I need to ask about here. I just wanted to thank all of you for commenting. It gave me plenty of ideas while I've been working to learn how this set operates. paudemge 02-17-05, 12:14 PM Originally posted by videobruce I haven't followed this thread for awhile, so if it came up before I missed it. August West 02-17-05, 03:50 PM Even after reducing the green and yellow controls, it still has a green cast to it. I see this comment posted frequently but all I can say is I don't see green push on my set. I don't know if some people are more senstive to this than others or if there could be manufacturing tolerances / quality control issues where the sets actually differ in this respect or what. I note some errors in green when using DVE to set up color and tint but I don't see these errors visibly and have not even bothered with the individual green and yellow controls, just color and tint. I'm glad to not have this issue for whatever reasons it seems to occur. videobruce 02-17-05, 10:04 PM I don't know if some people are more senstive to this than others or if there could be manufacturing tolerances / quality control issues where the sets actually differ in this respect or what. Every set I looked at was pretty much the same. No one was better/worse than another regarding the 'green' issue. I wouldn't really call it a 'push' issue because it affected the whole color spectrum, not just exaggerating green. 2left 02-18-05, 02:50 AM Originally posted by GeeWhiz1 . . . Also I occasionally lose programming for the digital channels from the OTA tuner. Is this in-fact fixed by a firmware upgrade? I'm at work, so I don't know my current revision. The set, a 52725, was purchased in early November, and was a "new shipment". I had to wait for it. Thanks MBJST jmart4173 02-18-05, 09:02 AM I just got an update for my new 62725 and it went from 4.03 to 4.05. They didn't tell me what it might fix but I had called because I was having a cable card installed today... UMD_Terp 02-18-05, 09:28 AM I called the other 1-866... Mitsubishi support number and they told me that the latest was 4.04... maybe I will try the 949-830-8364 number later today and ask them for it. I also asked about being able to record from the cablecard to my digital VCR and was told that it can't be done. I've never been able to record anything from the cablecard to the Mitsubishi D-VHS recorder yet and I always thought it was a copy protection problem. It makes no sense to me as to why you couldn't be able to record from the cablecard to the D-VHS deck over firewire. OTA works just fine. Isn't the cablecard/QAM tuner output sent out over firwewire as an MPEG2 stream just like the OTA signal is? If all the flags are set right, then it shouldn't matter whether the demodulated MPEG2 stream is coming from the OTA tuner or the QAM tuner. Both should go over firewire... anyone have any ideas regarding this... Shape 02-18-05, 09:46 AM Yeah, I can't record from the cablecard to my PC via firewire, either. :( Perhaps I'll try taking the cablecard out and then trying to record the unscrambled channels. |
