Maybe that would help me with my problem Bamadawg_63 01-07-08, 12:00 AM http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=531494 Look in the first post at the Table Of Contents - print out all the .pdf links - there is a sheet that explains how to enter service menu mode and how to navigate/change/save the settings. Remember to always pencil in what your "original" settings are before you change and save it. I did not change any of my "geomerty" settings - they appear fine on my set. One of the .pdf's shows each setting and what it effects - just look for those for geometry. Nate frankincensed 01-07-08, 01:04 AM Thanks Nate Wally1912 01-07-08, 09:19 PM Also curious as to what they will do since this model is discontinued. I do have a claim # & am hoping I will hear back from them soon. I have purchased many Sony products in the past couple years, so hope they come through for me on this. Does anyone have any experience with the Sony warranties? Again thanks for the input, I will keep experimenting with the different settings. In my case last summer, the warranty provider for Sony determined to cost of the repair was too much and sent me a refund check for the price I paid for my set. Here are my posts detailing my problems. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11156128#post11156128 http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11169120#post11169120 http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11496901#post11496901 golferadam 01-07-08, 09:37 PM I think I've decided to buy this set from someone at craigslist - however, I will have to drive over 5 hours to get it. I was wondering if it is worth it. I think the screen size is good for me - but mainly I'm worried about whether the set will have geometry or discoloration problems. PQ flaws such as those will drive me insane. I need the screen to look relatively perfect. Will be using the set to watch SD and HD media, and for gaming only. I'm also nervous about craigslist and the process in general. Should I do this or just forget it? If I had it to do over, I would have gotten the 34 inch model. I think it makes a difference. My 30" seems a bit too small in my TV room at about 8 to 10 feet viewing distance. But picture-wise you can't beat the XS and XBR tubes. frankincensed 01-08-08, 12:00 AM I just heard back from Sony regarding my warranty. They are going to replace the picture tube. The repair shop will pick up the set & replace the tube. They assure me it will be a new tube, not a refurb. I sure hope so. Im surprised they are repairing it, as I've seen allot of posts saying they just refunded the money. I had my eye set on the Samsung LN-T3253H, but this set had such a great picture before the problem, I just hope it will be just as good after they replace the tube. At least they didn't jerk me around and try to get over and not do anything. I must say the warranty service has been excellent thus far. Wally1912 01-08-08, 12:51 PM I just heard back from Sony regarding my warranty. They are going to replace the picture tube. The repair shop will pick up the set & replace the tube. How much time is expected to pass before your set is returned to you? What are you going to do in the meantime for watching TV? RenoDavid 01-08-08, 01:52 PM I just heard back from Sony regarding my warranty. They are going to replace the picture tube. Nice to see Sony treating you right! I just don't see any better picture in the stores these days with all the LCDs and all that. Tubes forever! (Well, until I can get a 50-inch plasma for $500. ;) ) frankincensed 01-08-08, 11:52 PM The place that is doing the repair work, which is also the place I bought the set from gave me a loaner. Its just an old school Sony 25", but a pretty good picture, for a non hd set. No idea how long it will take, they have to get the tube from Sony, so hopefully they will have the set ready to install the tube as soon as they get it. I was thinking of renting a hd set, but the local rip off rental center wants 175 per month rental fee, so the old school Sony will have to due, which sucks cause I cant watch any blu-ray movies via the ps3 I just bought a month ago nebrunner 01-10-08, 06:53 PM Hey guys, my buddy wants to buy my 30xs955 off me. They have a built in cabinet for their tv and it sits next to their fireplace. This TV would be the biggest he could fit in there. This would be great because I want to upgrade to a larger tv, maybe a 42 incher. My question is what would a fair price to sell this to him be? It's in perfect shape but obviously out of production and out of warranty, as well as used for a year. Bamadawg_63 01-10-08, 07:45 PM Hey guys, my buddy wants to buy my 30xs955 off me. Nate golferadam 01-10-08, 09:09 PM I was thinking $400-500 too. five 01-18-08, 01:52 PM I'm curious where you discovered this information? I too thought it was closer 1152x648, although I can't for the life of me recall where I found that info. I am trying to set this tv up in displayconfigx and was wondering if anyone knew the correct settings: http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/292/displayconfigxphilips32ge6.jpg I attached a screenshot of the info that is needed. frankincensed 01-19-08, 10:26 AM Well I got my set back yesterday, and it seems good as new. The pq is back to its excellent standard. All in all it took only 10 days from the time the repair shop picked up the set, installed the new pic tube, and returned it yesterday. I am very pleased with Sonys response to this warrenty issue. I only hope the new tube (still a little leery if it really is a new tube) will hold up longer. The original only lasted a year and a half. Thanks to everyone who responded to me on this problem. JohnGZ28 01-22-08, 05:49 AM Well I got my set back yesterday, and it seems good as new. I own a Sony Kd-30xs955 for about 2 yrs. a week ago, I had problem. The Red color does not show on standard definition (TV or any video inputs), but works perfect on 480p,720p and 1080i , on ASTC and any video inputs. Any idea what could be the problem. I thought it may be the parameter settings, but I don t know which one to change. I have the service manual, I looked on some of the paramter settings of the Tv thru Service mode, but I dont know which parameters to look at. Any help or idea..Thanks...Joe Riyaz 01-22-08, 03:55 PM anyone please???? ClayPigeon 01-22-08, 04:00 PM I don't think the color guns would work for one input/rez and not the other? As in i don't think they can be independently set. Anyways see what the "RYR and RYB" settings, say when you have the TV on the channel where the red don't come in. take note of the number settings, then change to where it works and see if the numbers change. Then also check the setting RGBS and make sure the number is "7" on all inputs. ( well 7 on my set is all color guns on, i'm sure it's the same for all Sony sets) ClayPigeon 01-22-08, 04:06 PM Actually wait. Maybe your input jack is broken , or something ont he circuit board that controls it? Try unplugging it plugging it back and keep an eye on the video when you do so and see if anything happens while you do so. Thats all i can think of, I'm sure somebody else with more internal TV know how can help you. Just don't give up if somebody doesn't post right away, this CRT board is getting slower and slower by the day. Hopefully you get it worked out though. raouliii 01-22-08, 04:36 PM Hi Everyone, I'm new here. I own a Sony Kd-30xs955 for about 2 yrs. a week ago, I had problem. Are you saying that with a given component like a DVD player and cable, 480i presents no red but 480p does? You need to be a little more specific about what is occuring. Is this composite, svideo, component, hdmi, or all inputs? You need to rule out any external contribution before assuming that the problem is internal. Riyaz 01-22-08, 04:57 PM Hi, Thanks for quick reply guys. I'm a Tv tech, this is the first I worked on this TV. It's actually mine, bought 2 yrs ago. I scoped out the crt pins, R,B,G signal are all present, ntsc or hidef signal, this really puzzles me. I have two dvd's both sony. One is standard ntsc output, with S-video,Composite and component outputs. I tried all on each Video input on the tv, except the hdmi(Dvd dont have hdmi out), result all same, No red color. I have another dvd that upconvert to 480p and so on,tried on all Tv inputs, including hdmi(dvd has hdmin out) color is great on all inputs. ntsc tv channels also does not show red, but atsc channels(720p,1080i) shows great colors but atsc chnls that trasnmit ntsc, no red color. any ntsc signal does not show red color. i called isf calibrator, she said it may need calibration, she chrge $300.... Riyaz 01-22-08, 05:04 PM also, last saturday, i scoped out the signal down to the ic chips on the b and m board, red color signal are showing up to the cx board, signal lvel seems ok. i removed the b board to check if their are loose solder, nothing , all looks perfectly fine. that's why i suspect it is something on the parameter setting...i joined this forum, thingking that someone there has the same issue.....thanks...joe raouliii 01-22-08, 05:17 PM also, last saturday, i scoped out the signal down to the ic chips on the b and m board, red color signal are showing up to the cx board, signal lvel seems ok. i removed the b board to check if their are loose solder, nothing , all looks perfectly fine. that's why i suspect it is something on the parameter setting...i joined this forum, thingking that someone there has the same issue.....thanks...joeI'll assume you have the service manual. Page 94 of my XS955 service manual has a signal flow diagram that may be helpful to consider. A thought. It seems that the problem occurs only for inputs that are processed by the DRC (480i). All other resolutions bypass the DRC. This may steer you to a particular area. There is a switch on the MZ board IC2009 that steers the video to the DRC as well as IC3003 (A/D) and IC3303 (DRC IC) on the BY board. Maybe red is being lost in one of these ICs. Riyaz 01-23-08, 04:59 PM I went through almost all the parameter settings, does'nt seem to help any. I suspect it is a bad Mz board, looks like ic2004 went bad. i did not have a chance to scope this out last time. i asked sony, ic2004 is $18, the whole Mz board is $185 plus shipping,tax...Ill let u know what's the fix. Thanks for the help. jonnyozero3 01-29-08, 11:32 PM Hello Fellas, I just picked up a used 34XS955 locally (great deal), but I can't get my basic cable channels to tune in (Cox cable Omaha). I've done the "find channels" and "find digital channels" with the RF coax plugged into the cable in. What am I doing wrong? I'm paying for the basic cable, and the regular cable channels (1-~70) show up on my old, analog 24" TV. Some of the digital and HD channels show up on the XS955 in the odd QAM channels, like 112.1 (major networks in HD, like NBC, ABC, etc), but I can't get the regular SD stuff, like Sci-Fi, History, etc. Any ideas on what i'm doing wrong here? Jon, if I'm understanding you correctly, you just need to go into the channel menu and activate the "autoprogram" feature. This will give you the regular analog cable channels, plus any digital channels the cable company gives you for free. I believe the cable companies are required by law to give you the local HD channels for free. I also get the Music Choice audio channels. You're going to have to upgrade your cable service to get any more digital channels. And to see the additional channels you'll either have to get a set-top box or a cablecard from Cox. Like I said, the local HD channels are free, but the other digital channels are scrambled. delpis 02-19-08, 04:34 AM i had a radeon x1650 in my htpc which i was using on this tv for 1-2 weeks. i probably selected all the resolutions above 1024 x 768 at least once. possibly some lower as well. this was done in catalyst control center, i never used powerstrip or a custom resolution. how do i find out if i did any damage to my tv without a cable box? it's been 1-2 weeks since i used the htpc and everything is normal i think. golferadam 02-19-08, 12:37 PM i had a radeon x1650 in my htpc which i was using on this tv for 1-2 weeks. i probably selected all the resolutions above 1024 x 768 at least once. possibly some lower as well. this was done in catalyst control center, i never used powerstrip or a custom resolution. how do i find out if i did any damage to my tv without a cable box? it's been 1-2 weeks since i used the htpc and everything is normal i think. Would someone who has this tv hooked up to directv via the HD HR21 HI def dvr mind posting their settings, if a decent calibration has been performed? I've been trying to set it up via Digital Video Essentials, & it doesn't look good. & it's not that I like vivid settings or anything, far from it. Actually that brings up another thought...let's say I was happy with the settings via Digital Video Essentials. Wouldn't that mean that I was merely happy with how those settings work with my particular dvd player (Samsung 841), & that they might not work so well with directv, SD or HD, or antenna HD? 1 more thought...on the setting where you're supposed to see the 3 vertical lines on a black background, I can only see the inner 2, not the outer 1, no matter how high I turn up brightness, or whichever one it was. I've heard this tv is great at reproducing blacks. Is it the dvd player's fault? Thanks in advance. jkoechling 02-23-08, 09:29 PM hi there, i just discovered this forum and got a bit lost in it reading everything. i found it because i am searching for a specific answer to a possible problem with my 30xs955. i hear intermittent clicks coming from it. it is the same noise that the set makes just after power on. it happens maybe every half hour or so. would you think this is something to do with the power supply? anyone else have this happen? nothing else is wrong with the set and i don't see this noise affecting anything else, but i don't want this to cause a problem in the future. thanks much chrisbooth12 02-24-08, 03:06 PM from another thread i started this might be a better place to ask..just WHAT exactly is wrong with my TV? http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c179/chrisbooth12/P3250061.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c179/chrisbooth12/P3250055.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c179/chrisbooth12/P3250052.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c179/chrisbooth12/P3250063.jpg Andrew911tt 02-27-08, 07:06 PM I'm so happy I just bought a KD-30XS955 off of Craigslist for $325. I have been wanting the 960 since it was available, but being so expensive, I couldn't justify it. Found a 970 on craigslist SF for $500, offered $400, and was about to leave to pick it up, when I checked the postings one more time. To my surprise, I found a 34xs955 for $500. I called, offered $400, and he said come and get it! When I got there, the guy just found his manual, and with it his receipt. He stammered a little with how much he paid (over $2000). But also come to find out it still has one year left on a 4 year warranty from Best Buy! I handed him the cash, took it home, and have been watching QAM HD all weekend! SWEET! Next it to do some geometry correction in the service menu. A little nervous, but am doing much reading to make sure I do it right! Cheers, Jeremy golferadam 03-17-08, 06:07 PM Congrats. Any ideas what it is? It's driving me crazy! Kythlyn 04-30-08, 05:10 PM Any solution to overscan on this set? Jerm357 04-30-08, 05:32 PM In the service menu with a 1080i or 720p signal displayed I changed.... - 2170D1- VPOS from 25 to 24 VSIZ from 32 to 29 -21702- HCNT from 38 to 42 HSIZ from 31 to 25 This is the best I think you can get with a 30xs955 to fix overscan. Kythlyn 04-30-08, 06:41 PM Wow, I'm going to try that when I get home. THANK YOU for the fast reply! Jerm357 04-30-08, 07:08 PM No problem. These were the best I could get without getting wierd things going on at the edges at both 1080i and 720p. Now compaired to my 40XBR4 LCD display, its not same as the "full pixel" option, but is an exact match to the "normal" setting(which is one setting below "full pixel") on the LCD which does indeed show more of the picture then the then the default setting on the 30XS955. One of the thing Ive noticed is when watching fox in HD, in the lower right of the screen you could only see "FOX" after the service menu tweak it now shows the whole "FOX2". Kythlyn 05-01-08, 10:18 AM I played around with a couple settings and was able to solve my problem. I can now see my whole cell phone, my wanted level and my current cash in GTA IV. :) I can see the whole radar too. Thanks a lot! I'm going to have to work on tweaking the HDMI for my PS3 now... that was really messed up for some reason. The top left corner was all warped. Kythlyn 05-01-08, 07:51 PM Here another question... although I feel this is a bit of a long shot. My screen is not as clear as it used to be... it's as if there is a very light blur that is particularly bad on certain parts of the screen (mainly the corners). Would anyone know if there is a setting to tweak that might fix that? biker19 07-07-08, 09:57 AM My trusty set has developed (seemingly overnight) a purple band on the right 2" of the screen. I checked to ensure nothing with a magnet was placed near the set. Anyone have any ideas? Jerm357 07-07-08, 07:30 PM Have you tried powering it off for like 10 min. then powering it on? This happend on my set from turning it off then on real fast but was fixed by leaving it off for 10 min. biker19 07-07-08, 08:05 PM That seemed to do the trick. I hope this is not a sign of the set going bad. Veritasfl 07-27-08, 01:31 PM My 34XS955 developed a problem in early June after a little over year (just out of warranty, of course). I turned it on one morning and the picture was overlaid with a pattern of short, multicolored bars (translucent). The sound was good and there were no flashing codes. I tried all the usual tricks to cure the problem, but no joy. I then turned it over to a professional. Since then, he has been trying to get a replacement for the board he thinks is defective, but the suppliers keep sending a board that won't fit, even though they swear that it is the correct part number for the model and serial # of my set. I am beginning to think that I should have ordered two xbr960s from the internet when they were discontinued instead of just the one I did order after seeing the great PQ of the XS955, but I was gun shy about spending so much money online. But now the local dealer I bought my XS955 from has gone belly up, so methinks I may never see this set working again. Oh, well, I guess that a 52 inch LCD set (NOT Sony!) just might be in the offing. Sic transit... Digital Man5 09-29-08, 11:01 AM Hey guys, I hope I'm posting in the correct section, if not, please forgive me. I've come to inherit a Sony KD-34XS955N set a while back, but am having a few issues with it. The first, and most annoying, is the fact that someone has managed to stretch the image well past the actual viewing area. It affects all three resolutions(480, 720 and 1080). I have found the codes to get in to the service menu, and have been in there, but it's just so utterly confusing and I am so scared that I may do something that will permanently wreck the TV. Is there any way someone might be able to walk me through it, or point me to a walkthrough on fixing this particular issue? Another weird issue is that when I play something that's 4:3, I get these weird sort of curves going on at the very top and bottom of the image, right along the black pillar boxes. The final issue is that up in the top, right hand corner of the screen it's got some sort of light greenish tint going on, almost like it has been exposed to some sort of magnet or something. It's not really that noticable, but I remember fixing an issue like this on a buddy's TV, it could actually be done in the regular menu. I forget what it's called though, something like "polar something or other", maybe? Anyway, if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, I'd be most appreciative. It's a wonderful set(unbelievably heavy, but wonderful) with some awesomely sharp picture, I'd hate to have to give up on it. :) zryder 01-06-09, 10:39 PM Hi all, I am a 34xs955 owner who has a new problem. Just last week out local cable co. (Cox) made a cutover to all digital. Around that time our analog stations became scrambled and had no color. A few days later the set was registering "No Signal" from all analog stations. I still pick up all the digital stations that the QAM tuner locked onto before. I should add that I have Basic service and just run cable directly into the set. The Cox service tech checked the signal and said everything was "great" and he even showed the analog stations on another set. My question to you good people is, does this sound like my tuner went "kaPoof!" at that time (coincidence)? Or, could there be something that changed in the way they are broadcasting the signal that is making the analog tuner not be able to see/discern the signal. Better yet, is there any way to verifiy if the tuner is shot without having a repairman out? How about a way to override the "Auto Scan" so that it only searches for analog signals? If not, how regular of an occurence is a defective tuner? The cheapest optin in the "blown tuner" scenario is to pony-up for a CableCard to act as a tuner (I'm not into a STB or antenna.) I just want the basic channels I am paying for. I've had this set for about a year and everything has been Hunky-dory so far. HD DVD looks stunning! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Bryan Gumm I know this is pulling up a really old post, but by chance did you get this fixed? mine is doing the same thing.. all the digital QAM channels are there, but no analog's. Thanks to anyone who can help me fix this. SCriss 01-06-09, 11:17 PM What am I missing? If the cable company itself has cut over to digital, how would you be getting an analog signal from them? In other words, you explain that you know the cable company switched over to digital; why are you expecting to still get an analog signal? Perhaps a better question is, why do you want an analog signal? Perhaps and even better question is, why do you care? Even if you came up with some plausible end to the sentence, "Well, I like analog because........" It will all be moot in a couple of weeks. There will be no analog signals, whether from the cable company or OTA. Mike2567 01-07-09, 10:23 PM Also, why not just get an STB. It will have all kinds of feature, menus, etc, and high quality. raouliii 01-07-09, 10:52 PM ......It will all be moot in a couple of weeks. There will be no analog signals, whether from the cable company or OTA.That is untrue. You are confused. The cutover to digital, by local stations, has no bearing on when or if cablecos convert to digital only. The digital locals will be/are being converted to analog, by the cablecos, and distributed normally. zryder 01-07-09, 11:15 PM What am I missing? Even if you came up with some plausible end to the sentence, "Well, I like analog because........" It will all be moot in a couple of weeks. There will be no analog signals, whether from the cable company or OTA. the reason I care, as previously stated, is just because OTA Broadcast stations are going exclusively digital, cable is not. I have hooked a small analog tv up to the same line, so I know for a fact that the analog signals are there. I would prefer to not have to rent a set top box from the cable company when my tv should be perfectly capable of getting these channels on its own. I paid for the standard 2-99 analog's, and I am only getting 18 digitals... there are 80 more channels I paid for that i'm not getting.. thats why I care. SCriss 01-08-09, 07:07 AM That is untrue. You are confused. The cutover to digital, by local stations, has no bearing on when or if cablecos convert to digital only. The digital locals will be/are being converted to analog, by the cablecos, and distributed normally. Huh. I guess I am confused. I stand corrected. I had no idea that the cable cos would convert a digital signal to analog. That doesn't make any sense. Of course, if that's true, (and I don't have any reason to doubt you), then all of these articles about what you have to do for the DTV transition are wrong. Every one that I have read says, "if you have cable, do nothing, you'll continue to get your broadcasts as you have; you don't need a STB." So I guess to go back to the question that brought this up, I think it possible that the analog tuner was DOA. My ATSC/QAM (whatever) was when I bought mine. Had to be replaced in the first month. raouliii 01-08-09, 08:44 AM ....Of course, if that's true, (and I don't have any reason to doubt you), then all of these articles about what you have to do for the DTV transition are wrong. Every one that I have read says, "if you have cable, do nothing, you'll continue to get your broadcasts as you have; you don't need a STB.".....No, those articles are accurate. Cableco subscribers are not faced with any changes, ie. analog stays analog, unless the cableco chooses to go all digital. Many cablecos have gone all digital in some service areas already and many have plans for the future, but the conversion to digital only, of all cable service areas, is not required because of the ota digital conversion. Cable stbs will be required for all subscribers in a digital only system. I believe the conversion to digital only, by the cablecos, is based on a cost/benefit analysis. They must weigh the increased cost of equipment, stbs and headend, against the increased income from additional services provided by digital stbs, ondemand, ppv, etc. radiofreemike 03-16-09, 08:30 PM I'm trying to setup the KD-30XS955 as a monitor for a new mac mini. I decided to test out the settings with my imac (NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS). I was able, using DisplayConfigX to enable a 1920x1080 area centered on the screen. The screen is readable and ok for playing video content, but text is slightly blurry and when displaying the desktop, the screen sort of pulsates . . . not quite flashing, almost a vibration. The test picture on DisplayConfigX has a series of horizontal black and white lines. The 30XS955 can't seem to render the individual lines and the entire block of lines is a grey vibrating mass. Does anyone have settings that have worked well for this box? Thanks. WJonathan 03-16-09, 11:40 PM I'm trying to setup the KD-30XS955 as a monitor for a new mac mini. Does anyone have settings that have worked well for this box? Thanks. Try sending 720p. It will be slightly clearer (and the text will be bigger). I know on my XBR970 720p seems to put less stress on the TVs video processor than 1920x1080. You're going to see some more of that flashing/jumping when you start opening multiple windows. These TVs just weren't designed for high-res PC input. radiofreemike 03-17-09, 08:54 AM I've tried pushing a lower res, but the situation is similar, except smaller. The subtle pulsating I've seen in other CRTs used as computer monitors and I've been able to increase the refresh rate and the picture evened out. The xs955 seems stuck on 60 Hz, however. If I try changing it even by 5 Hz, the picture flashes images and black screen at about a .5 Hz rate. It's difficult to determine if the image is as best as it will get (as you mention, it wasn't meant to be driven as a monitor) or if there's some parameter that still needs to be tweaked. Eventually I'd like to configure the TV with the mini and eyeTV, so text isn't major issue, but it's currently blurry enough that it's difficult to read the small text (time, weather, submenus) when running Plex. Thanks. Danonano 04-09-09, 11:24 AM I'm working with the TV and displayconfigx so that I can use it as a monitor for video editing from a G5. Radiofree, do you mind posting the 1080i settings you're using and I'll play with them to see if I'm able to refine it at all. Dan Seetipper 04-23-09, 05:30 PM Hi everyone, I've owned my 30XS955 for 5 years now. I recently began using the HDMI input with a new Blu-Ray player. Everything worked well for 2 months, then without warning the "home" screen for the player went black (I can see the player's start-up screen). I have another HDMI device, and it's working fine though the port. I can see the "home" screen fine of the blu-ray player on a neighbor's new LCD TV. The problem, it seems, is not with the player, which I've even sent for repairs twice for this issue (came back "can't identify issue, replaced motherboard anyway"). Any ideas? zryder 04-23-09, 05:52 PM my guess is the startup screen is sent at 480 or something like that, and the home menu on the disk is at 1080. are you sending 1080i or 1080p? Jerm357 04-23-09, 08:08 PM My guess is that your player got switched to 1080p some how. That is the only standard resolution that the xs955 wont display. zryder 04-23-09, 10:06 PM My guess is that your player got switched to 1080p some how. Yah, thats what I was getting at... bujucucack 04-28-09, 12:08 PM i just got one of the 955 off craigslist seems to be in great shape picture is good and all inputs work EXCEPT the HDMI i bought a DVI TO HDMI adapter to hook my pc to the tv plugged in to the back of the TV set the TV to video 7 and got no picture i connected audio in the red/white audio jacks just below the HDMI input and i get no audio ( the audio source im using is a ps2 just for testing purposes of the audio and i tried it in video inputs 1 2 3 4 5 6 and they all work just not 7) *no im not trying to get video from the ps2* so.... HDMI plugged in red/white audio plugged in TV set to video 7 NO SOUND or VIDEO i know that everything is connected correctly is there something im missing ? shouldnt i be getting audio at least? or does the TV wait for a video signal before it selects an audio when using HDMI? is there another menu that opens up after i get video working that allows me to select the audio source? or is there a setting in the main menu that im over looking that will set the audio and/or video source for video 7 ? is there something that needs to be changed for it to accept a DVI to HDMI adapter? tonight im going to try and borrow my friends ps3 so i can try another HD source but i dont know if he will let me =/ also im going to try buying a new adapter maybe the one i have is bad? sorry so many questions. ive searched the forums and didnt find any answers. so if i just over looked the answer on a different thread any help or advice would be great or any info on connecting a pc to this TV! thanks guys i will check here at the forums but not often cause im at work but you can also reach me at daphxman@hotmail.com before 5 arizona time or you can just call 623 205 2621 or text your number and i can call you back jdre 04-28-09, 05:44 PM What resolution are you applying to the input? 1080 by 1920 60HZ? The PS3 is a good idea to try. bujucucack 04-28-09, 06:02 PM thanks for the reply well im not sure ..... when i use my monitor with a dvi connection its at 1280x1024 and ive connected my pc to my friends flat panel HDTV and the pc kinda just configured its self. but was a newer TV and was flat panel LCD so tonight ..... im going to reconnect the pc to the monitor mess with my video card settings (btw my video card is an eVga nvidia 9800gtx+) and lower the resolution in hopes that that helps ..... i also live across the street from frys electronics so if that doesnt work im going to get another DVI to HDMI adapter and HDMI cable in but the IT guy at work swears that using an adapter that goes on the video card (same DVI to HDMI but the DVI part of the adapter will be male instead of female like the one i have and connected at the pc rather than at the TV) and connecting a HDMI cable instead of a DVI cable has better compatibility than the other way ( DVI cable and adater to HDMI at the TV end) also... its an old TV so i dont think this will help cause im sure any drivers for it would have been released already but ill try anyway and update my video card drivers well let me know =) zryder 04-28-09, 06:14 PM you dont need drivers for the tv... but make sure you are sending it the proper resolution. I found it best to send 1280x720x60hz, so start from there. That is 720p, by the way, and you will need to apply some overscan correction in your drivers. the Nvidia drivers should do it. jdre 04-29-09, 01:52 AM That sounds like a good tip! bujucucack 04-29-09, 09:33 PM ok well i didnt get the drivers cause i didnt think it would help lol but! i went and bought a dvi to hdmi cable instead or an adater so now i have my 19" monitor and the TV hooked up . still no picture on the TV but my pc does see the TV im able to change resolutions and signals. but i dont really know all the settings that should be set on the pc and the computer. is there anyone that has their TV hooked up to their pc and thinks that they would be able to maybe walk me through all the settings over the phone? because i dont have the internet where im hooking th TV up at (my girlfriends apartment) i only have internet at home and my pc isnt there. im on the internet at my ex girlfriends house lol yeah.... think thats for a different forum ..... anyway most of this would be easier to explain verbally i have free unlimited long distance so it wouldnt be a problem for me to call you back. just call and give me your number or text it to me please 623 205 2621 as far as i can tell ive got everything connected correctly and the settings set correctly .... but its not working so obviously i dont =) maybe there is just one little thing im missing ( hope thats all it is ) almost forgot the res is set at the native resolution of the TV cant rmember what it is but my vidcard detected it so i set it to that but it was like 1920x1080 i believe about the refresh rate my video card says that the TV will only accept 29 and 30hz but i think i can force others i dont know what overscan is im sorry im new to HD i really hope someone calls me PLEASE !! LOL just dieing to play some games in HD (CoD5, Mirrors edge , L4D and some other high graphics game) ceege111 08-13-09, 01:57 PM My 34XS955 developed a problem in early June after a little over year (just out of warranty, of course). I have the same problem - ever get a board that is ok? Seems crazy to throw out a set that has such a good tube just because the board is no good. I opened it up and wiggled out the main board and think I see which board it is that needs to be replaced but not sure...and it doesn't unplug any way that I can see. Has a sticker on it that says V-768-A which might be the part # MobiusBP 01-07-10, 11:29 PM Bumpin' up this slightly old thread, but Someone in my area is advertising the KD-30XS995 for around $350. I've always wanted a widescreen CRT TV (i currently have a Panasonic CRT 27" 4:3 480i) , and finally there is someone in my area who is selling one locally. He hasn't posted a pic of it in the ad, but i have sent him an email asking for some pictures. Does $350 sound like a decent deal, assuming its in pretty good shape? The ad also states that i get a "free Samsung dvd player", so maybe i can get him to reduce the price to around $300 if i decline the DVD player somehow, as well as the fact that its an OBO ad. What do you guys think? zryder 01-08-10, 02:00 AM I would hate to think that my baby is only worth $300, but realistically, thats probally the case.. If you're in a low population area, you might have to accept paying the extra $100 ~ $150... justsc 01-08-10, 10:56 AM Mobius, Wow, it's been a long time since I've been here. The email I received noted the 30XS955, something similar to what I had, and I wanted to share a little info. First of all, this is a beautiful CRT. The super fine pitch tube was the best they had. I had the 34HS450, or something like that, and it had a CRT of slightly lesser fidelity, and still looked great. For CRTs, you can't beat the SFP tube. It's a late enough model to have the ATSC tuner built-in. Mine didn't. Some of the other circuitry is also seen in the same period XBR sets, so it's right near the top fidelity-wise. Finally, it's got digital audio out, which is a nice feature for an older set, although not all that unique. It's only shortcoming is the lone HDMI port. But you can get around that by using the component input and get just as good a picture so long as you're not trying to input from a Blue-Ray player. It's really hard to estimate what these CRT sets are worth today. If, and that's a big IF, the set is in stellar condition, I might be interested in offering $250ish. The reason is you can get a decent 30" 1080P LCD set for somewhere around this price, so one wouldn't expect to pay as much for expired technology. It's definitely worth a look. Just check it out well. Look specifically at the corners for off color or excessive blurring. Make sure you get to see it with both digital and analog sources, including HD resolution. Without doing this you cannot adequately judge the picture quality. These sets handled analog material well, which was one of their strong suits. Check it out, and see if the seller won't come down some. Don't let him/her use the cablecard feature as a selling point. That technology hasn't gone anywhere, and it's value is very minimal. steve PS-If I've made any errors raouliii will set things straight. He's reminded me of a couple things - picture fidelity and weight. These sets have incredible pictures. I held off going larger, LCD or Plasma, because of the incredible picture my crt set provided. If one is only interested in picture quality these really can't be beaten. However, at 30" you have to sit pretty close to appreciate it. So the ideal environment is a small room, a bed-room for instance. I would wager that if one is going to sit no further back than 4-6 feet, this is a wonderful way to go. Up close this is a great set, especially if the price is right. About - weight. These sets are very heavy. Even the 30" set, at 150 pounds, can be tough for one person to move around "easily." Mine, at 34", really requires 2+ people to move. So, if you go with this set you want to select a location and then leave it there. If you can, put it on a stand with wheels so you can rotate it when needed. steve Bamadawg_63 01-08-10, 12:02 PM I really loved my 30XS while I had it. There are many things you said that i too was thinking when i was looking around for these. For $350, i could get a descent LCD screen, or a decently sized PC monitor, but I have a soft spot for CRT's, and we already have a 47" LCD Toshiba in our family room. That being said, there is an inordinate amount of lag on the Toshiba, and, to my knowledge, there shouldn't be any lag on analog sets like CRT's. So that slightly factored into the decision. My current bedroom tv is a 27" i got for free, and i was delighted. A year before that, i had a 15 year old Sony Trinitron 19", and that served me a good 5 years in my bedroom. The problem i have with my current TV is that its a, what i would call, pseudo-Trinitron. Its flat screen, but the image blooms ALOT when the screen goes from dark to light, or even when an image of a tree is in the middle, the screen basically distorts a little, and is slightly annoying. One problem i might be faced with is the stand that i currently use. Its a build-it-yourself kindof stand from walmart, and itrs already straining to hold this 27" CRT. So im hoping that its going to be enough for a 150lb heat generator. :o I really loved my 30XS while I had it. You could also tell that the users didn't utilize the widescreen nature of it, because you could see burnt-in black bars on the side, which i assume means he ONLY watched 4:3 programing on a good widescreen tv, and im betting it was hi-vision capable too. . . :() justsc 01-08-10, 04:51 PM Mobius, By all means, bring along whatever source you treasure the most. It could be a gaming console or your DVD player. This is an excellent way to judge picture quality as you would see it at home. I recommend that folks always do this when buying new from stores as well. It can be very hard to judge picture quality by the material run through sets on display. Great idea! steve ceege111 01-08-10, 09:08 PM Mine fried out after not too much use (but a few moves) - the screen showed scrambled menus over all the time. I wanted to replace it but went for the next one down (lighter trim, forget the model now) which has a different type of video overlay for the menus (more primitive - it's green). Got it on CL for only $130 by holding out - the seller had listed it for $280. I think it's more reliable. But the tubes are not focussed as tightly, and the sound is nowhere near as good - the last one was so good it was as good as my 400W reciever for most use. I miss it, the image was better. I would push it down, all the way to $150 or maybe $180. The seller will probably have no alternative. bilboda 01-09-10, 08:44 AM I think $350 is a fine price and so did several other people responding to my craigslist ad. I live in SE Florida. A guy drove over from Orlando 3-4 hrs in a tiny Saturn, cah in my hands and it wouldn't fit in the car, no way no how. Said he would come back later in the month but never did. Had a guy wanting to drive 4-500 miles., just a kid, as it turns out, kept me hanging.Ending up selling it to someone local, with a suv who's special needs daughter had demanded certain hookups in certain places on the tv cause a friend had one. It sold for $150 I think. At least it went to a good home and for a good cause. The big tubes dont have a big customer base anymore, quality notwithstanding. I went to a Samsung 42 incher myself. If you are slling, you're gonna have to find your niche. If you're buying, don't leave those poor sellers hanging. It took me 2 months, with time wasted on kids who couldn't follow up or communicate. Good luck. ps, Hey! was that you ceege111? MobiusBP 01-09-10, 05:52 PM Mine fried out after not too much use (but a few moves) - the screen showed scrambled menus over all the time. Well, i offered $250, and i also stated that someone else in my state was selling the KV-34HS510 for $150. im not sure if i'm allowed to show other people's ads so i can deal a price, but i did it anyway. :o I think $350 is a fine price and so did several other people responding to my craigslist ad. I am awaiting a response from the seller, but since i've never dealt with anyone through Craigslist, im not sure how long im supposed to wait. . . Also, i think these models go in this order, newest to oldest: B=Black S=Silver DA4=Newer chassis (with outer trim-like style plastic) KD-34XBR970 (B, DA4) KD-34XS955 (B, DA4) KD-34XBR960 (B, DA4) KV-34XBR910 (B, DA4) KV-34HS420 (S, DA4) KV-34HS510 (S) KV-34XBR800 (S) KV-34XBR2 (S) KV-34HD1 (???) firebottle 01-09-10, 06:15 PM I noticed in another thread here a list of HD-capable Sony TVs, but it doesn't mention which have ATSC digital tuners.... Only the ones below in your list have a digital tuner: KD-34XBR970 (B, DA4) KD-34XS955 (B, DA4) KD-34XBR960 (B, DA4) KV-34XBR2 (S) KV-34HD1 (???) The 34HD1 came with an external ATSC tuner box. also in the list above, the 970, HD1 and XBR2 don't have super fine pitch tubes. MobiusBP 01-16-10, 09:59 PM Well what-do-ya-know. I was researching on how to hook up a PC to an XS955, and the first result led me to this thread. Anywho, i am tryin to figure out if it is at all possible to use a DVI-HDMI cable to these tv's? I was about to buy a cable (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10231&cs_id=1023104&p_id=2505&seq=1&format=2) but decided that i should ask first. I read alittle about it here and there and it looks like some have it easy and some don't. Are these Sony's able to properly recognize the signal from a PC graphics card? im guessing the signals a different, or something along the lines. I have an nVidia 7600GT, WinXP. EDIT: And yes, i did purchase the 30XS955 for $250. I am very happy with it. :) ok well i didnt get the drivers cause i didnt think it would help lol but! i went and bought a dvi to hdmi cable instead or an adater so now i have my 19" monitor and the TV hooked up . still no picture on the TV but my pc does see the TV im able to change resolutions and signals. but i dont really know all the settings that should be set on the pc and the computer. is there anyone that has their TV hooked up to their pc and thinks that they would be able to maybe walk me through all the settings over the phone? because i dont have the internet where im hooking th TV up at (my girlfriends apartment) i only have internet at home and my pc isnt there. im on the internet at my ex girlfriends house lol yeah.... think thats for a different forum ..... anyway most of this would be easier to explain verbally i have free unlimited long distance so it wouldnt be a problem for me to call you back. just call and give me your number or text it to me please 623 205 2621 as far as i can tell ive got everything connected correctly and the settings set correctly .... but its not working so obviously i dont =) maybe there is just one little thing im missing ( hope thats all it is ) almost forgot the res is set at the native resolution of the TV cant rmember what it is but my vidcard detected it so i set it to that but it was like 1920x1080 i believe about the refresh rate my video card says that the TV will only accept 29 and 30hz but i think i can force others i dont know what overscan is im sorry im new to HD i really hope someone calls me PLEASE !! LOL just dieing to play some games in HD (CoD5, Mirrors edge , L4D and some other high graphics game) hansamurai 01-23-10, 11:06 AM Any way to disable the front power button on this television? My 16 month old just discovered it today... we might go insane if he abuses it like I imagine he's going to. shmup-o 01-30-10, 10:26 PM Put this in the Sony Codes post, thought I would try here as well... I just picked up a 30SX955, but the display is tilted to the left slightly. I currently have a PS2 and Xbox hooked up via Component, a Turbo Grafx hooked up via Composite, and cable hooked up via RF. All inputs are tilted, so that the left side of the screen is lower than the right hand side of the screen. For instance, if you were to watch ESPN or have a video game with scrolling in the background, you can see that you lose image when it's streaming right to left. I played with the UVLN and LVLN and saw that it affects top and bottom of the screen. In other words, the left and right edges look fine, but the lower left corner is lower than the lower right corner. Same with the upper corners - left is lower than right. I played around with the Geometry settings, but cannot seem to correct the issue. Nothing seems to take the left hand side of the screen and raise it. Now, I haven't read through the thread, just enough of the tutorials to make myself dangerous, but I can't seem to find the right words in order to find someone else who may have had this issue. Can someone please help me or point me in the right direction? Edit - Found the "rotate" SM code of 2170D-1 #8 NSC0. Unfortunately, this does nothing to my display if I push it to the extremes. Should this have fixed the issue? Edit 2 - Found the "tilt" in the menu, does not adjust the display at all... Teach him not to touch it. hunter371 02-07-10, 07:41 PM My lovely 34XS955 seems to be having some audio troubles. I get no sound out of the left speaker anymore. I started noticing this a few weeks ago, and checking the audio menu confirmed this. I can move the sound all the way to the right speaker no problem, but when I adjust the sound to the left speaker I get nothing. I'm not sure why/how this happened, but it is troubling me because the once great audio from this device is being thrown off by only coming out from one side of the set. Of course, I can fix this by hooking up external speakers, but the logistics of that trouble me in this room. Anybody know of another potential fix? Have you tried taking the case off and checking for a loose connection? hunter371 02-09-10, 02:52 AM Have you tried taking the case off and checking for a loose connection? That's an excellent tip and I suppose is worth a shot. I've never taken the case of before, I suppose it's just a matter of unscrewing all those screws. Anything I should be extra careful about when doing this? Thank you. raouliii 02-09-10, 08:28 AM That's an excellent tip and I suppose is worth a shot. Thank you.Don't use an electric/battery screwdriver, it will magnetize portions of the crt and create color purity issues in the form of blobs of color around the perimeter of the set. It will not be permanent damage, but will make you very anxious and take a number of power up/degauss cycles to clear. MobiusBP 06-11-10, 09:26 PM So do most user's of these sets use the "Pro" setting the most? Because i find myself using the "Standard" 85% of the time, as the darker scenes are almost too dark to see anything. Unless it's supposed to be that way.
