Just found this thread after three years of ownership.
I've been running a ps3 as a game system and BR player for a year now. Can anyone answer these questions:
Does this model support 24fps?
Does this model support the full white range over hdmi?

t-ray, you don't specifiy which TV....
I have the KDF-60XS955 and it doesn't do 24fps. No idea on the white though....
I apologize. My TV is also the KDF-60XS955.
Thanks for the answers.
RobReese77 01-20-08, 04:26 PM Hey all...
Just found this forum as well. I've owned my GW11 (KF-50WEW610) since October 2003 and the bulb JUST now went out...not bad - 4.5 years of viewing out of one lamp!
However, I am attempting to rplace the lamp myself and have the bottom rear panel off and the silver plate as well - STILL can't find the lamp!
Where the $^&@ is it located and how do I remove it??
Thanks in advance for any responses.
Look for a allen head screw in one corner. Remove it and then pull on the hinged handle to remove the square lamp assembly. If you are replacing it you should have a new one so that is what it looks like.
DirtRider 01-30-08, 05:46 PM I have a 60xs model and want to use it as my computer display. Has anyone done this successfully with 1:1 pixel mapping? I got it to display using my at hd2600 pro card under vista 32 bit but the display isn't very sharp which leads me to believe it isn't 1:1 pixel mapped. Anyone happen to have some powerstrip timings or other helpful info?

I don't think it can be done. The 60xs scales everything to 788p, but doesn't accept that resolution as an input.

It should be able to get close though right? If it was a couple pixels off in either direction I wouldn't care much but I just want to get it to clearly display the picture. Right now my ati hd2600pro is displaying over the whole screen nicely at 1280x720 but the text does not look crisp. I am wondering why this is and what I need to do to fix it.
kricker 01-31-08, 11:06 AM Running at 720p your text should look quite crisp. I know it does for me runing at 720p with my onboard nvidia 6150. Do you have clear type or font smoothing on?
jonnyozero3 02-03-08, 11:25 PM (He was a Pat's fan)
No, I'm not joking. Yes, my friend threw his remote through his KDF-42WE655's front screen at the end of the game tonight. I found it quite comical.
That said, I'm going to try to help and find him replacement parts.
Does anyone know where to find such parts, and what they'd be called? It looked like he needs a replacement to the clear screen, as well as a darker-colored mask/anti-glare screen. I've been looking (see the link) but can't find what I think he needs:
http://www.partstore.com/GetModel.aspx?MfgName=Sony&BrandName=Sony&ModelNumber=KDF42WE655&ModelAliasNumber=kdf-42we655&page=1&SortBy=price&sortdirection=desc
I'll probably try to have him give Sony a call as well for pricing, but I figured it'd probably be cheaper on the internet somewhere.
Thanks...

hmmm...not that I am aware of. Is this setup in the OS or the video card software (ati ccc)? Any other ideas?
kricker 02-08-08, 03:53 PM In XP it's in the display properties/appearance tab/effects. Vista places it in the customize options somewhere.

In Vista, go to Appearance Settings, click Effects and deselect "Use the following method to Smooth edges of screen fonts."
dconner 02-23-08, 12:27 PM My 42" TV apparently stopped accepting HDMI inputs today. My TiVo Series 3 stopped working, as did my DVD player's HDMI link. It's apparently not the receiver, as plugging the DVD player directly to the TV also gets nothing. When I unplug and plug back in the HDMI cable to the TiVo, I get 0.5 seconds of a clear HDMI picture, then back to black. Other inputs seem to work OK.
Is there any reason for hope here, or am I basically in the "downgrade to other connections or buy a new TV" zone?

This may be the time for a service call. It is sounding like it is the HDMI input in the TV.

Any ballpark idea what the cost to fix that might be? I'm outside my extended warranty period and starting to think new TV....
steve ans 02-23-08, 01:18 PM Any ballpark idea what the cost to fix that might be? I'm outside my extended warranty period and starting to think new TV....
Nope. I just bought a Bravia KDL-42W3000 for the bedroom (paid $1699). Prices are dropping due to new models (with 120Hz) coming April-July. Get an estimate. If it's higher than you want to invest, consider getting an LCD. Especially if the repair is about the same in cost. The W series is second only to the XBR. You would LOVE it.
dconner 02-23-08, 05:12 PM Huh. This is odd. After going out (and would've bought a new TV if Best Buy had the model I wanted in stock), I came back, turned on my TV, and everything was back to normal.
Dunno what's up with that, but I guess everything's OK now.

So in other words, you turned off the TV for awhile and now it works? :)
I always hated it when Sony's tech support said "unplug the power cord to the TV for 10 minutes" when I knew the problem was something more serious (light engine), but sometimes that actually does work. I saw on one of the diagnostic screens that the TV is running Linux, so it's really no surprise that a "hard reboot" (unplugging the power) will fix some problems. In your case, it sounds like you didn't even have to go that far.

Wow, I never realized that before. It's hard to get used to the idea that my TV is actually a computer of sorts, but putting it in that framework helps make sense of a lot of these problems.
BOTTLEDZ28 02-28-08, 12:36 PM my KDF-50WE655 has these very blurry looking blotches on the screen. It is on the inside of the screen. I can only really notice it when the screen is white. Does anyone have this problem? Im not too sure how the picture is reflected onto the actual screen but could dust have somehow landed on top of something inside the TV and now it is being magnified and reflected onto the screen? what can I do to get rid of this? I have no problem taking my TV apart but I dont want to waste my time either.

If you have blotches on white screens sounds like dust on the light engine. I (via circuit city EW) have replaced two already.
BOTTLEDZ28 02-28-08, 05:27 PM well I have no warranty at all on my TV so how canI fix this myself. Can the light engine be cleaned? how much to replace

I was told no there are too many parts. Piss poor design.
BOTTLEDZ28 02-28-08, 05:49 PM so there is no way to get the dust out at all by spraying some compressed air into it?

both times I was told that in addition to changing the light engine extensive cleaning with cans of air was used to clean out the cabinet. I was told that a light engine replacement was $1000.00+ repair. I feel like I will be maintaining a service contract for a long time since I have replaced two light engines and a fan in three years.

OUCH. That would make me toss the tv and just buy a new one. I am going to attempt to take my TV apart tomorrow or this weekend and clean it out with a few cans of compressed air.
BOTTLEDZ28 02-29-08, 10:19 AM what are the odds that Sony still has new replacement parts for this TV? Where can I begin to look into this. Does sony have a hotline for us TV owners?
hendricksonet 02-29-08, 02:30 PM Ok...I thought I might just ask to see if anyone has any thoughts on this. When using HDMI the picture goes down at a slant on the top of the screen. Not much, but worth asking about. It's only the HDMI that does it. The source it's coming from is my PC so I thought it was probably my graphics card or the HDMI cable. Just recently I bought a new graphics card and it's still happening. I even tried a new HDMI cable. I'm guessing it's actually the TV causing this...any thoughts on a fix or should I just go along dealing with it like I have for the past couple years :)
I should probably add that I now have a dual monitor setup where I display my HTPC on both my Sony and Samsung TV's. Both use DVI->HDMI cable. The Samsung one doesn't have this issue.

My second light engine was a reman from a third part vendor in Ca.

I believe manufacturers must carry parts for seven years after a product is discontinued.
BOTTLEDZ28 03-04-08, 10:21 PM what are the odds that they carry all the major plastic peices that hold the screen in place as well as the plastic around the bulb? I ask because all of mine are melted and warped now. Sony will be sending someone to look at it on Friday. 5 bulbs in 3 years
BOTTLEDZ28 03-05-08, 10:52 AM Can I get a head count of anyone that has had issue with severe heat build up around the bulb AND melting of the plastics please? I know I am not the only one here that has this isue and Sony is giving me the run around now. I will not stand for this. I will try to get pics of my issue up asap

Dawgdaes 03-05-08, 05:07 PM Holy crap is that is common? Can you say safety recall?
BOTTLEDZ28 03-05-08, 05:15 PM Im dying to see what Sony is going to say about this. Im willing to bet that they wont even get pictures from the technican when he comes tomorrow. That is why I did my own investigation. I just need to figure out the right people to send them to at Sony so I can be taken care of. Maybe I will just send all my pictures to every single email address I can find on Sonys website
BOTTLEDZ28 03-06-08, 01:45 PM well here is the update from the Sony tech visit I had today. The guy says I need a new light engine, lamp, ballest, fan(s), lamp door and a thermo sensor kit. He is going to write up a dollar figure estimate and send it to me tomorrow. He said that at the most it will cost is $1,000. He also said Sony is going to reject this and take no responsibility for it. What do you guys think all those parts plus labor would cost me? If Sony does not take care of me then it looks like a letter to the ERC will be the next step.
Oh and the guy also said that this is a common problem but this particular one is the most severe he has seen.
copotay 03-06-08, 04:07 PM Definitely bad situation, and I dont know how sony can reject this, the thing just about caught on fire.
BOTTLEDZ28 03-06-08, 04:12 PM well I will just have to wait this out and see what happens. I have a long road ahead of me I think. Even is Sony does honor my request to just buy this TV back off me, Im willing to bet that they will just give me about $1000 at the most for it. Then they will tell me that I have a $1000 credit toward any Sony TV I find in the sonystyle website where all the Sonys TVs are overpriced compared to whats at the local store. So, in the long run, Sony still makes money off me and still thinks they kept a customer.
steve ans 03-06-08, 07:25 PM I have a 2005 KDF-50WE655 which is still fine and recently purchased a Bravia KDL-40W3000 for the bedroom ($1699). If I were you and Sony offers you cash (like $1000) take it and invest in an LCD and be done with the damn thing. I definitely would junk my TV if it did that. That is friggen scary!

Last year I had a light engine replaced and I was quoted over $1200.00.
This year I had a fan and light engine replaced but never saw a price since it was covered by Circuit City and the company that did the service never told me how much the bill was.
All that has to be close to two grand. If a light engine is $1200.00 and bulb is $250.00 to $300.00 the ballast, fan, lamp door, and thermo sensor kit has to push you up another $300.00.
I can't believe that would pump that kind of money into a TV.

When my Grand Wega KDF-50WE655 goes and my extended warranty has ended (I think I have two more years), I don't plan on paying ANYTHING to have it fixed. These prices are insane.

Thank You.

display - 5 - vol+ - power
this will bring up service menu
then press jump 3 times then #2 9 times
you should see Lamp TM = hours
Lamp CT = on/off cycles
Hi guys,
Came across this thread thought I mention the following problem. Hopefully someone can help me.
For some reason my PS3 on my KDF-60WF655 I can't the PS3 to display over HDMI. I use a Bell 9200PVR and a Xbox 360 Elite with no issues other than I can't play DVDs/HDDVD's but games work fine.. I've tried everything I can think of including holding the power button on the ps3 upon power up to reset to native res.
Another interesting thing I've noticed is my Xbox 360 Elite HD-DVD player won't display either it says "HDCP link not found". So this leads me to believe it may be a HDCP issue but than again my Bell 9200 PVR works fine on the high def channels over HDMI.
Any help would be appreciated I'd love to use my PS3 and 360 HD-DVD drive on this TV.
*EDIT*
I should mention that I'm using the monoprice 5x1. But I have also tried the 360 and PS3 directly hooked up to the HDMI port, the PS3 still will not display a picture even after factory reset etc.

It took a few attempts to get the service menu but it did work. Thanks. :) I have about 2700 hours on my lamp after 3 years (I guess about 2.5 hours watched per day). Although my settings are on the bright side, the lamp still does a good job so I'm not going to swap it out yet.

Ok, so after reading through this thread I think I have the dreaded light engine problem. I have blue areas on my screen. They go away after the set is off for a while, but slowly and surely come back. There's no way I'm under warranty as I've had the set since 11/2004.
Does Sony have any kind of call in program for getting these things fixed? Or is there anywhere on line I can buy the part and fix it myself?
Thanks

Wolf, thanks for the link. Looks like I may actually get this fixed.
AVS rules.
I just wanted to post this for reference.
I had the dreaded purple spots on my screen. The first thing I thought was this is an optical problem not an electronic one.
So I took apart the upper case clam shell to acess the back of the screen thinking there was dust in there. I cleaned the back side of the screen and the mirror with a micofiber cloth and invisable glass. There was a large ammount of dirt on the back of the screen while the mirror was clean. I put the unit back togather and while the picture was definitally improved the purple/pink spots were still there.
I then searched this forum and saw people talk about dust contaminating the light engine. According to the instructions posted on this web site I took apart the back and blew out the light engine and all the fans with a pancake compressor and wand. There was an large ammount of dust in there. I also cleaned the inside of the case with a swifter. I put in all back togather and now have a perfect picture. Its amazing how much the picture quality degraded before I noticed it!
Thanks to any who posted pictures and information on this subject.
Again I just wanted to post this for reference.

I will have to do some digging as I am starting to get 2 purple finger prints too. It doesn't sound like it was too bad of a job. Was it? I may do some searching for this on my own.

dogdoctor 04-24-08, 11:53 PM ^^^Mr.WMS,
It sure sounds like a defective HDMI card on the TV or HDMI cable if the MDCP handshake won't work. I run my PS3 through a monoprice 4x1 switch and it goes fine. If your HD-DVD drive worked, I would suspect the PS3. But since the PS3 and HD-DVD drive both fail, I would be contacting Sony for some support.

Hope so. My second case of purple tint is starting to creep up from the bottom of the screen. I think I have about 2 years of service contract left.

in my opinion the extended warranty is a must with this tv. While picture is great the internal components are crap.

I got one, too, with my extended warranty (with some careful wording on my part). Thank God I got something for the $499. warranty. My bedroom has a 40" LCD Sony W series and I didn't buy a service plan this time. I am much more comfortable with the current technology. I wonder what the hell was wrong with me to spend so much on my KDL50WE655. With the stand ($500) and the extended warranty ($500) and this and that it was close to $5000. My RP still displays a luminous beautiful 768p picture (only about 3000 hours on the set) but the technology was so iffy with LCD RP and other RP systems that I wish I just would have waited the three years and gone for a 52" LCD TV right now.
Dawgdaes 09-11-08, 11:09 PM I got one, too, with my extended warranty (with some careful wording on my part). Thank God I got something for the $499. warranty. I totally agree with you about the waiting three years. I love the picture but I know snow day the thing is going to take dump and I will be screwed.
Stryker412 09-12-08, 08:44 AM I checked my lamp hours last night and I have about 6k hrs on it. It hasn't blown yet but I want to have a backup just in case.
steve ans 09-12-08, 09:08 AM I checked my lamp hours last night and I have about 6k hrs on it. It hasn't blown yet but I want to have a backup just in case.BTW, the overpriced $500 service contract from CC sent an aftermarket, generic replacement lamp made in China, without even the needed allen wrench or instructions. I happened to have a spare SONY lamp, which I purchased, when I got the set to fill in for the down time waiting for a lamp when the need arrised. That replacement lamp was made in the USA, came with instructions AND an allen wrench. (Typed on a BlackBerry
so please forgive the typos.

I would imagine after 6000 hours your original lamp has dimmed. You might want to consider putting the new one in and keeping the old as a spare. It might make your TV look brand new!
Stryker412 09-17-08, 09:34 PM I got the new lamp today (which is a Sony branded lamp). However, I have an issue. My wife didn't know it was coming and opened the box since the warranty was in her name. For some reason unbeknownst to me she took it out of the plastic and there is a very small finger smudge on the lens. Is this something I need to send back or is it ok? I can't say if it's from her or the factory but it is there but extremely small.
clean it as you would a camera lens before you install it, or send it back. That will show up.
Stryker412 09-17-08, 10:02 PM It's not something that would affect the bulb itself though right?
It's not something that would affect the bulb itself though right?
...I used to light TV studios with high-output fresnels (mostly 1k and 2ks). First rule in changing a lamp was no fingerprints. Oil from the fingers will heat up on the glass, start boiling, and POP.
I don't know if this is the case with these TV projection lamps... you might be fine. I wouldn't be comfortable with it though. :o
i made the same dumb mistake with the lamp i am using now.
big greasy finger print because i wasn't paying attention.
I used a very soft cloth and put a bit of windex on the cloth. The finger print was gone and the lamp is still working well 2 years later

That was my concern too, I used to deal with stage lighting (same principles). My brother in law looked at it but couldn't even see it. I'll see if I can remove it first and if I screw up I'll send it back to Sony. :D

instructions are in your owners manual, page 16, which can be downloaded from sony web site if you can't find your copy.
vando45 10-06-08, 07:52 PM I can't believe I read the whole thing! Well, I did skip over a few posts, but I did go over every page. Found this site while researching my next TV, brought home a Panasonic TH50-PZ800U a couple days ago. I bought my KDF-42WE655 in 10-04, been a great TV. Checked the hours with the info in this thread and I'm at 9600. The only problem I've had is the display banner popping up once in a great while, only started noticing it when I finally got cable about a year ago, I was strictly OTA with a rooftop antenna before that. No blue streaks or any other issues I've read about here. Now it has been moved to the basement where my daughter will get most of the use out of it. I know I will be needing a bulb soon, any suggestions on where to get one? Do I need to stick with the Sony brand or are some of the other ones on ebay any good?

im my opinion you should stick with sony. I have heard bad stories about the after market lamps, failing after a week and melting inside the tv and the such. Most of them only sell you the bulb and you have to take the lamp housing apart
I ordered a new one from sony 2 weeks ago and received it next day at the standard shipping price.
kricker 10-07-08, 10:30 AM I have a never been used bulb direct from Sony. It is still in the box, never out of the bag. It was supplied to me under warranty last year and I never had to use it. If someone is interested PM me. I already have a spare slightly used bulb as my own personal backup.
dogdoctor 10-16-08, 05:45 PM So....My beloved 50WE655 just this weekend started showing a blue bar on the screen in certain on-screen lighting situations. I called sony and here is there offer:
1. Replace the optical block at N/C but if it fails again after 12/08 it will need to be repaired out of pocket to me. Or just purchase a new TV.
or...and this was their first offer mind you: apparently they are not making 50" TVs anymore.
2. upgrade to a KDL-46V4100 LCD TV at a much reduced cost. (I don't want to post numbers but approx 60% off online merchant prices)
3. upgrade to a KDL-51V4100 LCD TV at a much reduced cost. (I don't want to post numbers but approx 60% off online merchant prices)
HMMM....I think I need to go the upgrade route, but I think I want to call Sony and see if they can give me a deal on the W series vs. the V series. Thoughts.
i would go with the new tv myself, besides you get to keep the old tv.
The blue issue will get worse till it is unwatchable.
dogdoctor 10-17-08, 02:27 PM i would go with the new tv myself, besides you get to keep the old tv.
The blue issue will get worse till it is unwatchable.I agree 100% and amazingly the wife is 100% on board too. Funny thing, I don't have a place for the old TV, as much as would like to keep it.
try to negotiate an extended warranty with the new tv, it can't hurt.
As for the old one, a new owner from ebay might be an option, it may be ok for a basement video game or something like that.
Ok, so I have the light engine problem too with my 50WE655. I called Sony and they offered me very good deals on some flat panel LCDs. I decided that I wanted my TV fixed because I just didn't feel like laying out money right now. Sony gave me the numbers for the 2 closest service shops and neither is actually close. Both are over 30 minutes away and neither will come out to my house to fix the set. They will however fix it if I bring them the set.
My question is this, what risk am I taking in transporting my TV? Forget about cosmetic scratches and stuff to the outside. I'm worried about the actual screen. Like the LCD panels moving or bouncing in the car causing dead pixels. Stuff like that.
Opinions please.

Opinions please.1. The risk you take is mostly from jostling the TV. You can, if things shift, create geometry issues which are really hard to fix. Of course there will always be a risk with transport, and ultimately it is up to you to decide if it's worth it though or not.
2. If I were you, I would take the new tv. If you fix the TV, you do realize that they are installing a new optical block/drive that will have the same failure rate. Nothing was changed in the design and the new one may fail faster than the first if your unlucky. if your lucky it will go another 4 years like mine did. It's a gamble but after 12/08 the cost is now all on you if it goes again. Therefore...
3. If they are willing to give us 70% off the cost of their new TV's (likely to be near cost for them), I would and did jump on that. My wife looked at it this way. If you are still going to want a new TV in a few years (even if it gets fixed), then for the size of TV that you and I are looking at, are you prepared to pay the retail prices they are going for now. My wife says she would rather pay 70% off now, than retail in 2-3 years. But it's up to you.
4. Also, ask for a discount on the TV you want. They quoted me the V series and I called back and got a break on the W series. I would have gone for a Z, but no 52" model. I seriously contimplated the XBR6, but the W will suit me just fine.

Dogdoctor, thanks for the reply. You've pretty much spelled out what I thought. When I first called Sony and they offered me the new flat panel, I was sold on buying the new TV. But right now this TV is hooked up to a SD DirecTivo. It does a real good job of displaying SD TV. I'm worried that the 52W4100 won't show SD well.
Anybody have experience watching SD on 52W4100? I guess I need to do some research in the display area.
Take the new flat panel offer!
See my reply to dogdoctor why I'm still undecided. I agree, the flat panel is a good deal.

But I have a feeling this is a great opportunity to upgrade all around, and contact D* to see if they will give you a free HD DVR. You know you will want to watch the National Geographic Channel in HD on your new set. ;)
steve ans 10-22-08, 10:47 PM I have a KDL-40W3000, the previous model, and SD looked fine. Now, I have DirecTV and SD looks worse than cable but I don't watch very much non-HD programming.
A-Roc29 12-03-08, 11:23 AM Excuse me if this has been covered already - I tried to search the thread, but wasn't sure what search words to try.
I ran into the blue blob problem, and Sony replaced my optical block for me. The problem now is that the picture seems washed out - too bright. I expected an improvement in the brightness, but this seems to be way too much, to the point that the rich colours are washed out. I've tried it on pro, vivid & standard, and they are all washed out. Dropping the brightness on the pro setting doesn't help.
Has anyone else experienced this, especially after something has been replaced (optical block or blub)?

Sounds like light leakage. :( Either the lamp isn't tight and/or seated all the way in, or maybe the OB replacement was a botched job?
cnickersonjr 12-04-08, 04:22 PM Conn's repairman came out today to check out another problem I'm having with my set. He's giving my wife some info from a memo Conn's has received from Sony regarding a RECALL of my set. I won't have the info till I get home tonight. I will post the info when I get it.
The repairman said the way they (Sony) do it is buy replacing it with another Sony TV. Not sure what model, but I will find out and post back!

Sony is offering free optical block replacement or a reduced cost on either a 52v4100 or 52w4100 for the blue blob problem. At least that's the deal I got. The deal ends Dec 31. Check out this site:
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/news-item.pl?news_id=206&mdl=KDF55XS955
The new TV deal is given when you call.
The same thing happened to me.
Optical block replaced due to the blue blob problem - under Sony Warranty.
Now, the TV is too bright and colors appear washed out.
I asked the repairman who came to install the optical block if the new
part was refurb or indeed new, and he said it was hard to tell.
I didn't think about light leakage, but I thought it could have been due to:
a) The "new" optical block is a refurb and the refurbishing / cleaning
process might have changed it somehow.
b) The new optical block is a different version from the original, and it
requires some different settings or recalibration.
I was able to reduce the brightness and now the TV is acceptable.
I find that "PRO" is quite bad, though, and the colors look OK in "STANDARD"
and "VIVID" settings.
Anyone else?

cnickersonjr 12-04-08, 05:42 PM Well they offered me a few sets at a discounted price. Prices I'm not ready to pay!
KDL52V4100 reg. price $2699 get it for $953 + $200S&H + taxes
KDL46Z4100 reg. price $2799 get it for $827 + $215S&H + taxes
KDL52W4100 reg. price $2999 get it for $1093 + $200S&H + taxes
Well at least you get to keep your broke set! LOL
I'm going to see if I can get Conn's to replace it under my extended/replacement warranty.
you never mentioned or i missed it, the size of your tv.
I have a 60 inch and i would like to know what they would offer as a replacement, as the flat panels are not available in that size.
I have heard they have preorders available for a 60 for 20K$ to be available soon.
I would be pissed if they wanted to charge me more money to get a smaller tv.
They are only offering 46 and 52 inch TV's as replacements. Even for the 60's as far as I know. Anything over 52" in flat panel is a large step up in cost.
my guess is that there cost for large flat panels will come down after they get this extended warranty monkey off there backs from the rear projections.
The prices they are offering as compensation are probably well above there production costs.
This is only a guess, but lets compare prices now vs. when the rear projection extended warranties expire before i get labeled a Sony basher

I'm going to see if I can get Conn's to replace it under my extended/replacement warranty.Something has changed recently These are the prices listed in the SXRD thread too. These where not the ones we were quoted about a month ago. For Ex. $843+local tax/free shipping = 908 to CA for the 52W. That's what I paid.
dogdoctor 12-04-08, 09:01 PM I would be pissed if they wanted to charge me more money to get a smaller tv.And to be fair. They are not charging more money to get a smaller TV. It would be your decision to upgrade your TV, it just happes to be that they offer smaller sizes. You can still go big, but that is your choice and on your dime. The technology of 3-4 years ago, pales in comparison to the tech of these new TVs. Overall your getting a better TV, you just have to decide how much the size matters to you.
cnickersonjr 12-04-08, 11:09 PM you never mentioned or i missed it, the size of your tv.
I have the KDF50WE655.
I'm not going for the exchange. I have an extended warranty with Conn's, so they will replace the broken engine for the 2nd time this year! I have my warranty until Nov. 2009. I'll purchase a new TV if it breaks after that. I love the PQ, not the issues. Thank "GOD" I got the warranty at the time of purchase cause the TV was a display unit!

if i where offered the option of a cash reembursment to buy a exact same size from a different manufacturer i would agree with you. If they cannot or won't replace a 60 inch without gouging me for additional profits i have to object.

Ignorance is bliss :D
Never had 1080p in the home. I will one day, in the form of a projector.
I sit at the least 12ft from this set, so it appears sharp. So I'm good with 720p for the living room.
12 feet doesn't even come close to my couch, my living room is 30 feet across. Size does matter

mdavidthomas 12-11-08, 11:49 PM For those of you who called Sony direct for problems with the Blue Blob, did they have a Sony repair person come to your home to verify? I found this thread last night and have the KDL-50WE655 and I have a blue spot in the lower left hand corner of the screen. I have never replaced the bulb and I have 7736 hours on the set. Was anyone offered a reduced price on the XBR6 sets?
Thanks,
mdavidthomas
dogdoctor 12-12-08, 05:59 AM Nope - no one came to the house. And no only the V, W, Z series are discounted. And if you do your research the Z is essentially an XBR6 but only goes to 46".
Sorry to ask a question that has probably already been asked but....
I have a KDF-42we655 that is still under an extended warranty but what is the 12-08 deadline some have talked about?
See my post above:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=15218001&postcount=3843
It applies to the blue spot problem related to failure of the optical block. Warranty through Sony is only available until Dec 31, 2008.
Mark_Venture 01-13-09, 12:54 PM I tired searching, but not having much luck..
I see posts about a blue blob problem, optical block replacement, etc... and I wonder if its what I just started seeing on my 4 yrear old Sony KDF-42WE655?
Friday night, while watching a DVD, I noticed what I could only explain as a leakage of blue tint up from the bottom edge, slight left of center, and extending up about 1/4" or so (but uneven and not consistent)....
Saturday night durring the Raven's game it was there. Sunday durring both Football games it wasn't.. Monday it was back for some programs, less noticeable in others...
I called CC since I got their City Advantage when I got the TV. They are sending someone out.
The extended warranty is up after this service call. I'm thinking about extending, at least for one year, just in case, and just to hold me over until next year, and get me some time to save up some money for something newer.
Any suggestions?
If I should think about just replacing the TV now instead, I'd have no clue what to get. It took me 1.5yrs (and a model change in there) to pick out this one. Comcast here only has about 20 HD channels, and most of the HBO, Cinemax, etc are SD... so watching SD is still important. My GF and my brother both have samsung LCD's, SD isn't watchable, and HD isn't nearly as clear/sharp as this Sony...
Anyone replace their KDF-xxWE655 and are happy?
To see the blue blob problem more easily put your TV to a black screen (ie.. turn off the cable box) If it is there on a black screen you probably have the problem. If so, it requires replacement of the optical block to fix which I would expect to be covered by your existing warranty. I went for a replacement deal with Sony and got a 52W4100 which I love. I moved my 55xs955 to the guest room and will use it until it is unwatchable. I think the replacement or repair offer through Sony ended Jan 1.

My KDF50-WE655 is still fine probably because it has only about 4000 hours. I believe I'm still covered by a sh@##y CC extended warranty. As far as replacement, I'm too late for that if it goes. However, I have a KDL-40W3000,and it is great (except that it is 60mhz). One thing it does have that the 4100 does not have is 10 bit color`the 41000 is 8 bit. Still I woudn't have minded a replacement for a RP TV that was a dinosaur.
I have seen refurbished optical blocks online for less than $400 and it doesn't look to hard to replace so I may go for that option if it gets a lot worse. Right now I can only see the blue blobs on a black screen and they are faint. I imagine it will get worse with time. My 55xs955 has about 6500 hours on it. I replaced the bulb at 6000 near the end of my BestBuy warranty and the picture got brighter.

I have the same set and have replace two light engines and a fan. My CC EW is up in March of 2009. They will offer you an opportunity to extend it. I'm not too worried about them going out of business because I think it is some how owned by some division of GE so you can always get it fixed. The bigger issue is if it cant be fixed and CC goes toilet city your screwed.
If you extended the warranty repairs from the first warranty do not count towards a new set if something goes wrong with the second one. The repair counter starts over the extension.
David 42 01-14-09, 11:07 AM New 720P sets 42" (and even larger) are regularly available for below $1000 now. The prices will only continue to fall.
If extending your warranty would cost $200 or more, you might be better off getting CC to fix the Sony one last time now, then sell it on Craigslist and put your money towards a new set that isn't predisposed to optical block problems. Especially if the service plan doesn't cover replacement light bulbs (which is another looming expense).
I've had the optical block on my KDF-42WE655 replaced once (at no charge by Sony, about year after the warranty expired), and plan to do just that as soon as I can find a fantastic sale on another HDTV.
In fact, I had already tried when a Samsung 50" plasma came up for ~$600, but returned it because of a defect with the speakers.
gjschaub 01-15-09, 01:36 AM New to the forum, have a 42we655 with the blue issue. It started as a streak near the bottom edge but now it seems like we get a discoloration in the middle of the screen depending on the colors. It does seem like it gets worse with the time turned on. Any hope that it just need the thorough cleaning? I also see that Sony pulled the web page relating to the warranty extension. Has anyone had any luck with them since the first of the year?

I'm in your boat. My KDL-50WE555 is still fine but no, the Sony offer is over. Too bad is was junk in a pretty package. Just be glad you didn't buy a Qualia
.
gjschaub 01-18-09, 11:41 AM Well, I called Sony and they really didn't say anything except to contact a service center and I can call back after. My feeling was that they are not going to do anything, just trying to be courteous.
I think I may try the cleaning myself, if it works, great. If it helps but still isn't completely right, I may try the refurbished light engine from Tri-State. If I see no change at all, I am still on the fence on spending any money. I am also considering changing the bulb depending on the results, I have about 13000 hrs on the original bulb! From what I have read here, that is very good.
If the service center comes to your house you will have to pay for the trip if your tv is out of warranty.
Good luck with the cleaning, I tried it and there was no change, I had a clean tv with a blue blob problem.
Tally up the cost of the tristate OB and a new lamp (200) from Sony.
That is really pushing the upper limit of what I would put into a tv that is out of warrant and that old.
That is if all goes well, I have heard of a few unsatisfied customers from tristate, and hope everything fits back together without breaking something.
I am on my 2nd OB on my kdf60wf655. I had sony rep out on the same day the extended warrany was released. My second OB is still going strong.
The wife and I have already decided that if it happens again the tv goes out the door unless a more cost effective repair comes out.
gjschaub 01-19-09, 09:30 PM Thanks for the input. I am considering replacing it with a Panasonic TH-50PX80U 50" plasma, which Sears has for about $900 right now. I would keep the Sony and hope for a cheap fix, like you mention.

I can't beleive it, i turned on my kdf60wf655 this morning and there is a blue blob on the lower right of the screen. Just the way it started on the first ob failure. 23 days out of extended warranty and a week before the superbowl.
My new tv will not be a Sony.
garymil 01-30-09, 04:23 PM Well I sold my kdf60wf655 for $500 (buyer knew of the issues), and then sold the 52w4100 replacement for $1500. The 52" was just too small. I bought a Panny 58" TH58PZ800U to replace it. All I can say is wow....
The panasonic is a huge leap forward in picture quality over the LCD rear projection and quite a bit better then the 52W4100. Better blacks and more realistic motion. I'm firmly in the Plasma camp now.....
Maybe if I bought the 55" XBR for 6k I would think differently.

gjschaub 01-31-09, 08:49 PM Reporting back on my 42we655, after replacing the optical block, a refurbished one from Tri-State. The colors are not the same or "right" after the replacement. It seems strong on the red and maybe blue. For now I adjusted things in the standard menu and it is watchable, but I am looking to do some tweaks. I will be going through the tweaks listed, but thought I would post here if there are any suggestions on where to start. The bulb is still original, with over 12000hrs, so maybe I should consider replacing it before I start. Thoughts?

Probably wouldn't hurt to replace the lamp/bulb. Had same outcome with red. Re-tweaked to what would appear to be extreme values, but got it back to a great picture.
RDD1951 02-03-09, 06:26 PM Blue clouds will be gone on the KDF50WE655 next week, Best Buy extended service agreement just barely covered it, since it was put in force 12-04, but orginal TV was used(it was supposed to be a NEW ONE)and was replaced with new one on 2-12-05, so they covered it under the original extended warranty with some coercion. Optical block was ordered today 5-7 days will have it fixed. 2-bulbs, 1-hdmi board and now optical block in 4 years. Thank our lucky stars they are fixing it. I will blow it out a little while the technician has it open. Thank You for all the posts I read on this, before I called.

It the optic block and the light engine the same thing? I have gone through two light engines and one fan on 42". Both repairs were covered by my CC extended warranty. The first engine was changed out in my living room. The tech as part of the repair service went through a couple of cans air blowing out the unit. The second was done in a shop so I can't say what happened. My point is you may want to have the tech do the cleaning. I would be afraid of getting dust on parts you don't want dust on.

Although a computer isn't a TV, when I had my computer cleaned by Best Buy, I watched as they not only used compressed air but a vacuum hose to clear all the dust out of the computer. I would want the same done for my GW if they had to open it.

Maybe I'll fire up the compressor and vacuum both, compressor just has a little moisture in it. I think it would be OK? Might have a hose long enough for the one that goes thru the dryer filter. Even the air cans that I have will put moisture on a produce of what I've seen. I might worry more about a fan stopping. Wonder if you get a fan stoppage light or overheat signal before it's too late. I'll ask the service person when he comes back.
I just take my computer out in the garage once a year and blow the dust out of it. I build it so I get to clean it too, plus replace a fan. I'm would like to build a new one, with new I7 chip, but even a Duo Core with a 1333 FSB would be fantastic. I7 might be over kill at the moment, some program aren't totally supporting it.
Dblbeard 02-07-09, 12:15 AM Yes, I called them on the 2nd or 3rd of this month and they called me back offering the replacement deal a few days later. I've got until the 19th of this month to make my mind up. Either to fix my 5 years old tv or pull a grand out of the pocket to replace. However, when I found out about the extended warranty this was 2 days after I purchased a 52" Samsung LCD from Circuit city at 25%off due to their going out of business.
All sales were final so I couldn't take it back. Oh, well. Maybe there is a good market for for a second hand new sony LCD.
rockcola 02-18-09, 01:38 PM So was the last poster implying that he was given the replacement deal in 2009??
steve ans 02-18-09, 03:02 PM That was my impression.
rockcola 02-18-09, 05:45 PM If thats true, He's the first to be offered an extension into 2009. I have tried but was denied. I sent a letter though hoping to get an offer.
or he bought the 5 year extended warranty
rockcola 02-18-09, 10:15 PM I spoke to him from another website. He said his warranty expired, but that he had service on it in the Spring. So maybe he got an extension due to the service.
DonCoolio 02-25-09, 11:49 PM I called in late Jan 09 on my kdf50we655 blue blob issue. After 5 min on the phone, I was offered the replacement deal. KDL52w4100 delivered last week.
I do not know how Sony determines who will receive this deal, but obviously they are still offering it to some.
Dawgdaes 02-27-09, 05:45 PM I got Circuit City to send me a new bulb before my extended warranty expires on 3/15 and they cease operations. I'm still on my original bulb.
Should I change the bulb now or wait till my original bulb dies?

I called sony about my kdf60wf655. The ob failed again 2 weeks after the extended warranty expired. They told me no go, sorry, and tried to schedule a service call. I told them no thanks.
Since then i have noticed that thay are still covering the Model: KDS-70Q006
2004 till june 2010 for the ob.
I wish i would have known that when I was talking to them.
If anyone has a good explanation of why one model would be covered and others not for the same year I would like to hear it.
If anyone should try to contact Sony in the future would you bring this up.
Thank You

Would that model be the 70" $14,000 Qualia?
Good point,
I also see that the 14k 70" also shipped with a 3 year warranty, mine only had 1.
steve ans 03-03-09, 10:30 AM My GW4 KDS-50WE655, basically trouble free since my 2005 purchase, starting making loud (real loud)noises while it was on. It sounded like elecrical arcing or something not nice. It happened about four times. My Mom, who lives here, said she heard it about two weeks ago. I recently replaced the lamp since the origial failed (after about 4000 hours). I may still have an extended warranty with CC. It was purchased 3/05 and was $499.99 (!!!). It is, I believe for 3 years after manufacturer warranty) soI may just get this in. The extended warranty company has nothing to do with CC.
I went online and found that sets purchased before 2006 are covered by National Product Care (1-800-286-0470) and I reached them after about fifty attempts. They put me in touch with a local repair shop who will come to the house to investigate the loud electrical noises-I will want them to clean out the TV too. My $500 extended warranty expires in TWO days.....

Good luck with them... they are trying to do everything they can to deny my claim made and accepted by the warranty company PRIOR to CC liquidation...
Bascially, I called, the "old" warranty company providing the CC advantage, they accepted my claim, sent it out to a local service center, who contacted me, ordered the parts, and were going to call me when they arrived to schedule an appointment. I never heard from them, so I called them back only to find they were no longer getting paid by CC so I had to call 800-286-0470...
I've been trying to reach them, sending them faxes... now they are telling me they see the claim reported on Jan 23, AFTER my plan expired, which is BS since I called them BEFORE we went to the hospital for the birth of my Son (Jan 15)... They are asking ME to provide proof!!
what a mess! It makes me want to NEVER buy an extended warranty again!

They better get in touch with me. The set made those loud "arcing" noises (sounded like lightening) again yesterday. The repair technician, whose business name and number I have, did not return my second call but did say when he called the first time that he would call me next week to set up an appointment. Why couldn't he set it up when we spoke last week. He said something that he was very busy and it would be easier to set up the appointment the following week. We'll see. NEVER BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY! It is totally a profit thing for the retailer and rarely do we come out ahead. A few months ago, I did put in a claim for a lamp through this CC Advantage Plan and received a sh#@ #y Made in China non-Sony lamp without even the allen lug nuts but regular screws. I happened to have purchased a Sony lamp when I got the TV and put that in the TV instead.

I got my monies worth out of my CC EW.
1. Swapped from a defective panny tube to my current sony
2. Got a new light engine
3. Got a new fan and a light engine
4. As the clock was ticking on my EW and CC last weeek I got a new Sony bulb. I'm still on the origional
I think it is an equal amount of luck with who you get on the phone.

LOL very low 300:1?? I have a KDF-WE655 and the manual makes no mention of contrast ratio. Still, it hasn't gone bad YET and produces a glorious picture. Maybe not as crystal clear as my 1080P Bravia LCD FP but the WE655 produces more cinematic color.

Well, my CC $499 warranty wasn't worth it. The CC EW lamp replacement was an aftermarket Made in China piece of junk. Instead, I used the Sony Made in USA replacement that I purchased when I got the TV instead. The aftermarket lamp didn't even have lug nuts or an allen wrench. It has screws. The CC replacement lamp will be used for emergency only as I don't plan on buying another lamp for this TV. My first lamp lasted 4 years and it looks like time is ticking on the set's lifespan. I haven't watched it enough hours for the optical block to malfunction.

I had loud arcing sounds in my set recently and my extended warranty was ending in a few days. Someone did come out but couldn't reproduce the problem. I will remain covered because I reported the issue before the EW ended. The technician said that these sets are just dying...lamps melting the plastics, lots of issues. Thanks Sony! My KDF50-WE655, including Sony Home Theater (which I had to replace the receiver to have HDMI), expensive Sony Grand Wega Stand, Sony Speakers, Extended Warranty ran about $5000!!!!! I understand the technology was new and therefore, expensive but I don't understand how Sony could sell RP sets that were so flimsy and junky. Granted, the picture is beautiful but I would think, for the money, these sets needed to be a hell of a lot better in durability. I'm just glad I wasn't rich enough to buy a $14,000 Qualia!!!
SunPowered 04-07-09, 02:19 PM Just started noticing that both, left and right hand vertical edges of screen look yellowish (as if nicotine-induced, but we don't smoke) when viewing a white screen. It seem to be more pronounced at top and bottom corners. This is only noticeable when image is widescreen.
I have searched all the posts and despite all the Sony OB problems noted, haven't come across anyone describing a problem similar to this.
The lamp was replaced a year ago. I've cleaned the lamp, prism, and lens. Peeked into cabinet and the mirror looks OK.
Any ideas?

I had a similiar problem except I had a blue fringe on the edges. It looks like one of your lcd panels is going bad, probably the blue. In my case, they had to replace the optical block.
gfbuchanan 04-07-09, 10:02 PM Every once in awhile, by 55-WF655 loses its mind and forgets all of the channels. I then have to spend 50 minutes waiting for it to scan the channels again. And of course it also loses all of the labels I entered. It seems to happen when Comcast changes channels, which they have been doing a lot lately. When I queried Sony support about this, they were not helpful. Any ideas how to get this fixed?

Stryker412 04-29-09, 09:38 AM Question for those of you who have ever opened up your TV. I had work done on my set last year with a horrible service company. They must have disconnected the front power button when they opened it up, and forgot to reconnect it. I didn't notice it until months later because I never use the power button. I am about to sell my TV, and was hoping to somehow fix it.
Does anyone know how the button connects or the best way to get at that area without doing any damage to the set? If you push the button it feels like it will fall through the front, there is not resistance on the other end.

Stryker412 04-29-09, 03:04 PM I would give those jerks at that repair ompany a call and demand they come and fix what they did.
I tried that with the scratch they put in it but they claimed they didn't do it. It was small enough I didn't see it until a week later so they claimed I did it since it took so long to call. I might have one of our engineers at work try to fix it.
Mark_Venture 05-14-09, 01:39 PM Well, finally after MANY phone calls, and raising my voice a few times... This other warranty company FINALLY accepted my claim. (personally I think it was my saying... "hey, why did the old warranty company call a local service provider if it wasn't covered in the first place?" that made them act..)
So, this new place came out, and picked up my 42WE655 and took it back to the shop. They gave the estimate to the warranty company.
The TV Shop called me this morning and told me the want to bring my TV back to me. The warranty company isn't going to pay for the repair. Instead they are going to exchange the TV.
The warranty company just called and offered me a 42" JVC LT42P789... which does not appear to be that good of a set. i can't find it locally, so I can't see what the picture looks like. :(
I can't find my original CC advantage paperwork with the terms/conditions of the warranty, don't know if that would even still be valid with CC being out of business? I don't know what they will offer if I refuse the JVC... I have to call and find out.
Since I already purchased a 46" XBR6 two months ago (since it was on sale for $800 off) because I didn't know if this 42WE655 was going to get fixed, maybe I should just take the JVC and sell it for like $500 on craigs list?
Suggestions? Any current Sony model that I might be happy with?
guaping 05-30-09, 09:13 PM Hello everyone. I just recently discovered this forum/thread, and have been impressed. I have KDF-50WE655, purchased in 11/04; I bought 3 yr extended warranty and never had to use it. I love this TV and never had to research the internet about any problems, until recently. I checked my lamp hours, and I got 9300 hrs already.
My questions:
1. Any recommendations on where to purchase the lamp?
2. I recently picked up a cable card (M, the pink one)from Comcast, and tried to activate it. But Comcast needed the Host ID and Data ID. I was able to get into the service menu, but don't know which one I'm trying to look for. Any ideas how to get this info? I called SONY already and the tech didn't have a clue how.
3. Since the beginning of transition to digital broadcast, I have not been able to use the PIP. The feed from the wall goes to a splitter, one of which goes directly to the TV and the other to the HD-DVR, which is hooked up to the TV via HDMI. I was hoping I could make the PIP functional via the cable card without having to use a DTA.
Thanks for the help!
steve ans 05-30-09, 10:06 PM Get a Sony lamp from Sony. Request a higher tier of Support from Sony for help with the Cable Card. I don't use a cabe card so I can't help you. I have the exact same model TV and love it (hoping it won't die). I have about half the hours you have and had to replace my lamp a few months ago. I bought a spare Sony lamp from Sony Style when I got the TV. It was $199.99.
I have a 1080p 60Mhz 40W3000 Bravia and am very pleased with it but the film-like quality of KDF RP can't be beat even if it is only 768p.

What happens when you try to use "PIP"? (Sony calls it Twin View on these TVs) What are the symptoms? What is "the feed from the wall" — rooftop antenna or cable?
Were you aware that these GWIV sets will show the digital sources (Digital OTA, HDMI, and component) only in the left-hand Twin View pane? It can't show two digital panes.
So if you start with a digital source and press the Twin View button, the new right pane can only be from an analog source. When you rotate the right pane through the sources, the TV will skip any digital sources. When you rotate the right pane to the antenna or cable inputs, it will only permit you to tune to analog channels.

Hi David. I have Comcast cable.
So if I understand it right with the PIP, we can't use the right hand pane anymore for TV, once the transition to digital channels is complete? I use the PIP to watch, say, ESPN HD and ABC/NBC/CBS simultaneously. So that will make having a DTA (connected directly to the tv via splitter from the wall feed) or Cable Card pretty much useless (I have the HD-DVR connected via HDMI for the digital feed) to get another feed for the PIP, correct?
ellisr63 05-31-09, 09:02 PM How do you know how many hours are on your bulb and when to replace it?
gfbuchanan 05-31-09, 09:15 PM Comcast should still be broadcasting your local stations (channels 2-30 or so) in analog. So you can tun them on the right side of twin view. Since you connect the cable box to the HDMI, connect the DTA to the antenna input of the TV. Then turn on Twin View, select the right panel and switch the input to antenna, channel 3 or 4. Then use the DTA to tune the channel you want to watch.

Greg, any other option aside from using DTA? Comcast allows 2 DTA's free per household; any add-on would incur a rental fee, and I don't really want to buy a DTA if I can help it. That's the reason why I was trying to use a cable card to get a signal to the right pane of PIP. Thanks.
jimmyv99 06-02-09, 10:19 AM OK so it has been 4 years, 1 month, 21 days, 7 hours and 50 minutes since my last post to this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5469898&highlight=#post5469898). That must be some kind of record LOL...
After about 4 years of no problems w/ the TV, I got the blue blob on my KDF-60WF655 about 2 or 3 months ago. I've been dragging my a$$ about calling the Sears warranty service (thank God I bought the 5 year warranty), and last night the bulb blows. Now I'm back to watching a 19 inch tube TV on a small stand in front of my 60 inch paperweight LOL. I called Sears and they have scheduled a technician to come to the house on June 11 and have also pre-ordered an optical block and a bulb to bring with him. I hope that is the problem and he is able to fix it on the first visit, because I would sure like to be able to see the Magic school the Lakers in HD.
I suppose from what I've read here, I should be ready w/ some compressed air to blow out any areas that the technician opens? Anyone else have any advice or anything else I should consider? Thanks.
gfbuchanan 06-05-09, 12:29 AM Sony, in its infinite wisdom, decided that the left pane of PIP would display either digital or analog signals, but the right pane would only display analog signals. I don't know why, but probably because it saved them a few cents.
A cable card results in a digital signal, that can only be displayed in the left PIP pane. So adding a cable card will not solve the PIP problem. Since a DTA puts out an analog signal, via the RF input, it will display on both the left and right panes. If you can find another source for analog signals (via the RF input, or the composite video inputs), they should display in the right pane. When Comcast ultimately drops all analog signals, then the right PIP pane becomes useless without a DTA.

jimmyv99 06-11-09, 05:31 PM TV: Fixed
Sanity: Restored
The Sears guy was super-knowledgeable and fixed it in about an hour, mainly because he kept having to stop and answer questions I was asking him. He replaced the optical block and lamp (which were delivered to my house like 6 days ago) and it worked perfectly. Also, I was surprised that there was almost no dust inside the TV. We blew it out pretty much only because I had the compressed air sitting right there, but it was probably unnecessary. TV works great now...hopefully for another 5 years.
NW Nightwing 07-01-09, 11:11 PM Boy did I find the right thread. The issue with my Sony Wega KDF-42WE655 isn't nearly as serious as the others I've read here, but it's really annoying so I can only imagine what those posters have gone through.
42WE655: owned for about 4 or 5 years.
Manufactured: December 2004
W/EW: Can't remember or find the paperwork
TV Service: Cablevision of New York
I notice a weakness in the sharpness of the picture during times of a lot of action (large amounts of pixels refreshing perhaps?) in HD and SD. In HD I notice it using my cable box/DVR and in SD I notice it primarily with my Nintendo Wii, though I only tried one game: Spiderman Web of Shaddows. The cut scenes look kinda blocky when you're looking at what is supposed to be smoke.
On the cable box I removed 1080i from the list of resolutions to be displayed to see how 1080i channels look in 720p instead. I still notice the problem, but it makes the issue less noticable unless you're 3 feet from the screen.
I've never come by a problem like this, especially since warranty information is hazy.
How would you guys proceed with a case like this? I'll still look for the paperwork that came with the TV, but I'm wondering if I'll need to get a new TV. I have a PS3 with an HDMI cable that I want to look good, for cryin' out loud.
Thanks.
JimProuty 07-02-09, 04:25 PM This seems more like a problem with the video sources rather than your TV.
Pixelization during action is sign of limited bandwidth available to the channel that the signal is being sent through. And the TV can only show what it has been sent.
Use a DVD or Blu-ray disk for testing; I bet it'll look fine.
gfbuchanan 07-02-09, 05:30 PM I tried this earlier and didn't get a reply, so I am trying again.
I have a 55-WF655 Sony and it keeps forgetting all the channels. Comcast keeps moving the channels around, so I have to rescan every once in awhile. The TV scans the channels fine, and discovers lots of them. The TV works fine until I turn it off. When I turn the TV back on the next day, it has forgotten all of the channels and I have to scan again. I am guessing it is a problem in the firmware when there are more channels than it can save. Anyway, how can I get a firmware upgrade to correct this problem?

JimProuty 07-02-09, 05:41 PM Forgetting settings could be related to a bad battery or bad NVRAM.
Unless you're willing to tear your TV apart looking for a battery to replace (and I'm not confident there *is* one), I'd call the service guy.
gfbuchanan 07-02-09, 08:29 PM Thanks for the suggestion, but it is not a bad battery. This has been happening to me off and on for several years.
The symptom is that if I have too many (exact number is not clear) channels "Shown", when I turn off the TV, it forgets all the channels. If I "Hide" most of the channels, it does not seem to be a problem. I am guessing there is some limit to how many shown channels it can remember, and if you exceed that, it just throws up it's hands and forgets all of them.
Usually this does not occur, but the TV has the habit of adding any new sub channels it finds when you turn any of the sub channels on a frequency. This is not a bad thing, except that sometimes it seems to take the number of shown channels above the limit and it forgets everything.
If it didn't take so blamed long to scan all the channels, I would experiment to see where that limit lies. I am guessing it is in the 48 to 64 range.
Has anyone else had this type of problem? I am connected to Comcast with lots of new clear QAM channels and no cable card.
Greg
NW Nightwing 07-02-09, 09:02 PM This seems more like a problem with the video sources rather than your TV.
Currently I'm an employee of my Cable TV provider troubleshooting HD equipment, so Pixelation is the first thing I considered. I came to think it was the TV when the issue happened on multiple sources (Nintendo and Cable box). And when it was with TV reception, I was constantly checking the signal levels on the box.
My PS3 is new so I haven't tried a game or Bluray movie yet, so I'll try those first, but my tests have shown it to be the TV. For it to definitely be the cable provider would be both a headache and a relief, because this morning I found out my TV's extended warantee did exist, but it expired this past February 2009. Cable would mean crawling around looking at wires and splitters, which is more doable than paying a million dollars for a TV part or something.
Extremely upset 07-26-09, 06:35 PM A day late and a dollar short I guess. I treied finding the right thread to post this in but had no luck so here I go..
I own a KDF55XS955.. The other night I was watching a DVD and above the bottom letter box a blue line started to appear.. It got brighter and brighter and then a blue blob apprared in the upper left hand coner.. Upon seeing this I decided to do a little research on the internet. I learned some very interesting things. The biggest thing I learned is that Sony knew about these TV's and others having this potential problom before they even rolled them out for sale. I also learned the extended the warranty on this TV till 12/08.. And that most people had this problem happen shortly after the replaced the bulb.
I called Sony today and they informed me that the extended warranty has expired. I asked them why I was never made aware of this "Extened Warranty" and they had no answer but that it was posted on their website. My reply to that is why would I go on your website if I never had a problem until now? They offered nothing but to set up a service call on my dollar.. I continued to argue when they finally gave me a different number to call back tomorrow..
My question is this.. Does anyone have any advise on how to win this battle when I call back? I saw that there was already a class action lawsuit against sony for this problem with their own employees saying Sony knew of this problem. I'm just really upset. I didn't spend almost $4K on a TV to last me just about 4yrs. What makes me even more mad is that my TV was regigtered with Sony and I was never made aware of this extended warranty..
Any help in how I should handle this would be appreciated.. Thanks.

I've got nothing to offer you that will make you feel better. Over in the KDF55/60XS955 thread what you reported is extremely common. And you are right, it's a known flaw in the TV and Sony should have contacted you when they were offering the repair or discount on a replacement, especially since you have the TV registered with them.
Good luck with your battle -- many have fought it and few have good news. I have the 60" version of your TV, and I've been reading so many blue blob stories I know it's not a matter of if, but when. :(
I'm watching for a new TV to replace it when that happens, and it's not going to be a Sony.
dconner 09-02-09, 10:59 AM I had a similiar problem except I had a blue fringe on the edges. It looks like one of your lcd panels is going bad, probably the blue. In my case, they had to replace the optical block.
I seem to have this problem with my 42WE655 now, maybe. What I've got is a brighter blue glow at the very bottom of the screen (only, straight across the bottom.) Not covering much space, a bit noticeable but not too bad.
Is it possible this is a symptom of a lamp that's about to go out? I don't recall anything like this before the first time I had to replace the lamp (IIRC, it just went from "works fine" to "nothing"), but I figure it probably is about due for replacement.
If it's the LCD panel, should I expect gradual continued deterioration?

It's the optical block. I had the same problem. Starts small and will gradually get bigger. I had mine fixed under Sony's extended warranty. I'm not sure what the situation is on that now.
I've looked some but can't find any info on a class action suit. I would like to participate if anyone has this info.
AWD_Guy 10-26-09, 12:39 AM The GWIV tweaks and HTPC threads look very cold, so I thought I would start here...
I am confused. I got a hand me down KDF-50WE655 which I believe is a GWIV by everything I have read so far. I am trying to use it with my HTPC and am up and running at 720p.
I want to fix the underscan so I can see all the PC screen, and the -1 setting isn't enough and want to use the Service Menu to resolve it. I have read the UMR thread and some of this and the tweaks thread, and can get into the service menu with no problems, but my categories don't match! I don't have any DCP* or MID* categories... Am I doing something stupid?
My categories are:

CXA2209Q
AP
DLBY
BUSSW
CXA*
2DCOMB
TELETEXT
MSP*
CCPS*

BoogerBomb 10-26-09, 10:48 PM I set the resolution of my PC to 1366?x768 or something close to get the screen to show the entire desktop. ATI listed it as 720p "optimized" under the HDTV resolutions panel in Catalyst Control Center.
AWD_Guy 10-26-09, 11:48 PM Sorry I wasn't clear, the problem even with the menu: screen: overscan setting set to -1, I still have too much overscan and need to tweak it in the service menu so I can see the entire desktop that is currently outside the edge of the screen.
I can get into the service menu, but it doesn't look like what others have described and the categories and items do not match.

The usual solution to something like this is to use something like PowerStrip (http://entechtaiwan.com/util/ps.shtm) on your computer to inset the video.
AWD_Guy 10-28-09, 02:04 AM The usual solution to something like this is to use something like PowerStrip on your computer to inset the video.I have and use Powerstrip when needed for custom resolutions and timing, but don't think the GWIV likes it when you mess with too much from the 720p standard. I will do more testing on it.
From what I have read in the HTPC and tweaks threads, the Service menu includes per input additional size/positioning settings and should be able to do this, but mine just doesn't look the way those threads describe.
Maybe I will go resurrect one of those threads and see if any Service Menu gurus are still tracking them.
