View Full Version : Denon 3910 Owners Thread
Any help on how to post a survey on this thread? The results may be interesting.
IMO the results could be potentially destructive judging by what I've been reading in those "other formats" threads. It's gets ugly in there at times, as I'm sure some of you have seen. This thread is like refuge from the storm, a nice, peaceful place where like minded individuals come to extoll the virtues of their "lowly upconverting platform"...
HAHA... Just kidding... only not really.
alfbinet 07-01-06, 03:32 AM New technology often causes debate. And this is a new form for Standard Def Players to meet and justify costs. I am curious to find out how many Denon owners own High Def DVD players and own Denon DVD players at a very high cost (in excess of $1,000.)
I own both a cheap player and (to my mind) an expensive player at ($1500.) With the upcoming 3930 at whatever price I wonder if the purchase will justify the cost? Toshiba is not a Denon, but is Denon worth the cost? I know this post may seem inflammatory, but I own both, love the Denon for DVD-A, SACD, but pic quality either DVD or upconvert just isn't there anymore.
The Rang 07-01-06, 04:23 AM pic quality either DVD or upconvert just isn't there anymore.
Maybe the new HQV Realta chip in the 3930 will remedy this.
The 5910 uses the Realta. Is it significantly better than the 3910 on video?
Ralph Potts 07-01-06, 07:02 AM Greetings,
I have owned my 3910 since October 2004 and have been very happy with it. I will admit that high def. DVD is something I am interested in. The real issue for me is that I still very much love DVD Audio/SACD. Not to mention the performance of a good upconverting player.
I have thought about the move to the 3930, seriously. I think in the long run I will wait to see what Denon has to offer in the high def. DVD arena. In the meantime I will probably look for a lower end unit that can send 480i video over HDMI. My Anthem AVM 50's Gennum video processor can deinterlace and scale that signal to 1280 x 720 and forward it on to my Sony front projector.
I will keep my 3910 until it can be suitably replaced. We will just have to see how things play out.
Regards,

I agree completely.
Please do not link a poll to this thread.
I'm all for healthy debate. Unfortunately polls rarely lead to it.
At some point I will have both the Denon and a BR player. Should a BR player come out that matches the 3910 in audio and video then the 3910 will get moved to the master bedroom. The Sony player in the bedroom will get moved to my oldest daughter's room and the Walmart special in her room will get moved to the youngest daughter's room.
I think I'll be keeping mine for music duty at the least for quite some time.
I saw a review of HD-DVD player in Widescreen Review and I got the impression that they have a horse in this race, and it is HD-DVD. (I'm dropping my subscription for that reason and Reber's harranguing of engineers/producers (on the cruises) about the way HE thinks speakers should be arranged.) I don't doubt that it is a fine machine, but it got kid glove treatment. WSR's HD-DVD movie reviews struck me as cheeleading as well.
For me,
Rule #1: Never, ever buy the first generation of any technology.
Rule #2: Never, ever break Rule #1.
overcast 07-01-06, 10:12 AM Rule #3: Never have any fun.
EVERY review has been extremely positive, they can't ALL have a "horse in the race".

Yes, "they" can. I detect a distinct A/V press animosity against the Blu-Ray Group for causing a format war rather than falling in line. Some are blunt and obvious, while some are subtle and nearly subliminal. And I am not a conspiracy nut.
Rule #3: Never have any fun.
Never overpay. And one month later then see the same unit for 50% off. And then four months after that see a unit that performs much better for the same price. And then, in the case of HD-DVD, see a unit that *does* output 1080p. <dons nomex>

And hopefully a unit that plays SACD and that is made by Denon or Onkyo. I'm with you, my friend. The 3910 is good enough for me until a 2nd or 3rd generation player.

And for those of us (like me) limited by budgetary constraints and sporting a TV with a native 1366x768 panel, waiting seems like the best option.

Agreed...the audio performance of the 3910 alone is stunning...regardless of the format. And while other cheaper players may output a similar (or slightly better)picture, I'll wait until the dust settles before jumping on the HD DVD/BluRay train.

The Denon 5910 (and probably the 3930 when it comes out).
Murray1080 07-02-06, 05:14 PM Ive posted in here now since Im using the 3910.
Ive tried many forums under AMPS but still not getting any answer to this question thats just driving me nuts!!!!! :(
 Ive changed my 3805 Denon to the 2807 so I can have the HDMI switching, but I have wasted a complete day trying to get the HDMI to work!!!!
All the equipment is HDCP and Im using my existing Denon 3910 player.
I can get the Component to HDMI to work at 480/576p and thats when the player is set to HDMI /DVI off. So it is only upscaling component to HDMI.
Its when I switch the player to HDMI to play at 720p I cant get a picture at all!
In this mode I cant get anything, 480/576p, 720p or 1080i.
This is driving me CRAZY! I have tried every possible setting and just cant get it to do the handshake!
If I plug the HDMI directly to the Projector without going through the AMP all works perfectly!
Anyone had similar problems and what can I do to get it to work???
Its really driving me NUTS!!
Hope someone out there has a FIX for me.
I have discovered that I can get the picture to work through the DVI port on the back of the 3910 player using a HDMI/DVI converter plug, BUT:::: If I use the switching on the amp to go to TV and then back to DVI the image is just a snowstorm! What I then have to do to get the image back is to flick the remote on the player through all the different conections HDMI on, HDMI off etc and then back to DVI and the image is back on the screen!
What is going on here??? But still nothing but BLACK when trying to use the amp straight HDMI out???
Thanks in advance
JohnGZ28 07-02-06, 06:48 PM but pic quality either DVD or upconvert just isn't there anymore.
Where did it go???
All of a sudden it's blurry, compressed, pixellated because you bought a cheaper player?

Have you tried the different settings for the HDMI output on the 2807? There's a menu for it under Video Setup. I don't recall offhand exactly what they are, but I had to play with my 3806 a bit to get the HDMI passthrough working and it's been fine ever since.

Maybe someone with both the 3910 and a Denon HDMI receiver can help, I know the 3806 works fine with the Toshiba HD-A1, and the Oppo 970HD.

I have issues with my 3910 and Panasonic 900 projector and two HDMI switchers that I did not have with my older 500 projector.

Im using the Panasonic 900 but as I said the HDMI works on this projector but not when I put it into the Denon 2807 pass through
JasonColeman 07-03-06, 12:06 AM Sorry Dudes...I'm old school...still 3805 via component, but I've also got my 3910 and SA 8300 via HDMI directly to my 60" SXRD w/o problems. Maybe a new HDMI switching Denon AVR is on the horizon, but I have to talk my buddy into buying my 3805 first! :D

bucky63 07-03-06, 09:58 AM I have had problems with a Gefen and Monoprice HDMI switchers, I heard of someone having problems with DVDO new VP30 switcher/processor and now the 2807.
The 3910 and the Panasonic 900 in combination with a HDMI switcher do not like each other.
Is anyone successfully using a HDMI switcher between the 3910 and the Panasonic 900?

I can confirm that my 3910 & VP30 (most recent firmware on each) still will not play nicely together over HDMI
Don1959 07-03-06, 02:06 PM Here we go again.... having HDCP stuffed down our throats..... expensive equipment that wont talk to each other......... all to keep the powers that be happy..... it is bad enough that they are trying to control where, when and how we view this material.... but all these problems with HDCP handshake mean that it is next to impossible to view the material at all...
The HDCP(HDMI?) forum should be held accountable for all these problems.... this copy protection scheme is forced apon us...therefore we should have recourse when HDCP does not work between two HDCP compliant devices......
As far as I know, all manufactures of HDCP compliant devices have to be licensed by the HDCP(HDMI?) forum.... it should be their responsibility to ensure that these companys produce devices that are compatible with each other.... not just collect and bank the royalties and spout off as to how important the protection of material is to the motion picture industry....
Sorry for the rant.....

Rant away. Not enough people have ranted enough. This cannot possibly be blown out of proportion. Multi-$k gear rendered worthless, or at least sufficiently devalued from a convenience standpoint. Rushed to market. And we, the market, have been buying. We have met the enemy, and he is us.

Boy, those are some loaded questions which will no doubt spur some debate here, but I will tell you how my 3910 is set up. For the HDMI - I use y Cb Cr, as RGB seemed to add some artifacting. I have the enhanced black off, but this no longer matters because after my last firmware update, it doesn't do anything anymore. For IRE setup, mine is set to 7.5, which is the American NTSC standard. Some claim that if you use 0 IRE that you will get better blacks, but I find this setting crushes blacks on my LCD. Since you have a plasma, you may get better results using 0 IRE. It really shouldn't matter which you use, as long as you adjust the brightness properly for whichever setting you prefer.
Botttom line, try all the options/combinations and see what looks best to you!
Cheers,
Z

I have a 3910, a Monoprice 5x1 HDMI switch and a Panny AE700. I have found out that they all works together with I have relatively short (mine is 6 feet) from the switch to the projector. I have no problem what-so-ever with this setup. I don't know if this will work for the other switches/processors, though, but I think it is worth a try if you can live with a short cable from the switch/processor to the projector. BTW, my 3910 firmware is the latest one as of Oct '05 when I sent mine to Denon Canada to fix the Black-than-black problem (I can't remember the version at the moment).
I have posted my observations in details on a couple of threads here on AVS. Do a search on "QuadESL63" and/or "Monoprice switch" or something like that.
PooperScooper 07-05-06, 04:08 PM For IRE setup, mine is set to 7.5, which is the American NTSC standard. Some claim that if you use 0 IRE that you will get better blacks, but I find this setting crushes blacks on my LCD. IRE is only applicable for analog video, it has no meaning whatsoever in digital video output. Black is 16 for digital (studio) video everywhere (but not PC video standard). See Chris Wiggles sticky at the top of the forum. He explains IRE very well. 0 is probably the correct one to use for digital output. You should be able to calibrate your display to match the output from the player. Although LCDs don't do very well with blacks, so a compromise is probably in order.

When you say IRE has no meaning in digital, I understand what you mean in the context of the sticky, but the fact remains that if you are outputting via HDMI, and you change the IRE setting from 0 to 7.5, the picture does brighten considerably, necessitating a brightness adjustment on the display. As I said in the earlier post, it really shouldn't matter which you use, as long as the black level is set correctly using DVE or a THX optimizer or whatever. As to my comment about black crush on my LCD when using the 0 IRE setting, it is a nearly indistinguishable difference, or maybe I'm just imagining it.
PooperScooper, just out of curiosity, what connection, display type, and settings are you using?
Just read this in Chris's sticky:
"Use the IRE setup setting that maintains as much data as possible through to your display. The default setting may more likely be the preferred setting. Default is usually the 7.5IRE setting. This was reported to be the case on the Denon 3910; users should test this on their players and share model-specific observations to aid others!"
Maybe I'm not imagining the black crush.
According to Kris Deering (Secret's), IRE should be set to 0.
According to Kris Deering (Secret's), IRE should be set to 0.
What kind of display was he outputting to? What I'm getting at is that there may be advantages to using one or the other depending on your display.
That could be, but his general comments are that in the US, 0 IRE is the correct setting (I PM'd him several times when I bought my 3910 to specifically ask). As long as you calibrate after setting the IRE, it probably doesn't matter that much anyway.
pbarach 07-06-06, 08:09 AM I'm not sure if this situation is caused by my 3910 or the TV it's connected to (Toshiba plasma), but the dark letterboxes around the picture on my screen tend to shift in color, depending what's next to them at the edge of the image. For example, let's say I'm watching a DVD of a TV show and I am using the squeeze mode. This will produce pillars on either side of the picture. These will shift in hue depending what's happening inside the edge of the TV picture. The same thing is true of the letterboxes at top and bottom (although to a lesser extent) when I'm watching a widescreen movie from an anamorphic DVD. It's kind of annoying; anyone else notice this?

With IRE set to 0 and "Normal" black level, get yourself a calibration DVD such as AVIA to adjust your display (not the 3910).

So don't mess around with any of the other settings (brightness, contrast, etc.)?

In general, you're better off making those adjustments on the display rather than in the 3910 menu.

He didn't say that; you need to do ALL the adjustments that are listed on Avia or DVE. And make the adjustments on the display, not the player.

Sorry, just wanted to start with the basics - the basic basics - the stuff that seems obvious if you already know it - and "doh!" if you don't.
FoolintheRain 07-09-06, 04:03 PM Just curious if the DL3 was the last firmware upgrade that came out or if I need to bug someone for another. The reason I'm asking is that my Airplane-Don't Call ME Shirley Edition pauses (vid and aud) every few minutes. Like a hiccup...really annoying as hell. The only people who have had the problem in the DVD forum said it was also on a Denon (not the 3910 though). I'm hopinf its just this disc, but I want to correct it if possible. It would suck if every disc encoded like this one has these problems. Thanks!
JohnGZ28 07-09-06, 10:06 PM Yes, the DL3 was the last released. However, those who have purchased recently have reported different version other than the "B" for DL3.

Just the normal technology cycle.

As long as your computer has a credit card reader I'm sure you can download it. :D
JasonColeman 07-11-06, 10:47 PM Check the sponsors at the top of the page here...I've purchased several cables from RAM and Blue Jeans...You don't need an ultra-expensive cable, but I wouldn't go with the cheapest one, either. Go for something in the middle. These HDMI cables from RAM (http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/DVI-hdmi_cables.html#hdmi-r2) are pretty reasonable and the build quality is quite nice. A 6-footer for under $45...

I definitely would not get an expensive one nor the cheapest. No need to spend a ton of money on one and a cheap one may have shoddy construction.
Blue Jeans cables and MonoPrice are forum sponsors check out what they have to offer.

It is, they throw in the hardware for free. :)

hyxtryx 07-13-06, 03:43 AM Hi, Does anyone else have a problem playing SACD's out to the end on their Denon 3910? I have installed the 3-disc firmware upgrade from last year, and I checked recently and saw no new updates...
My problem is this: On some SACD's, the audio starts pausing periodically about 1 hour into the SACD. Most of my SACDs are under 1 hour, but two that are longer and that fail are Deep Purple Live at the BBC, and Tommy. As the SACD plays, it gradually gets worse. From a 1 second pause, 10 seconds of audio, to 10 second pause, 1 second of audio. ... to 20 seconds pause, 0.1 seconds audio in the case of Tommy out near the 25th track.
Joe Satriani "Strange Beautiful Music" is around 70 minutes long, and plays fine. Tommy plays fine on the 2-channel track, just not the 5.1
Anyone else experience this? I hate the thought of sending my Denon in for repairs, and I have the DVD-Audio of Tommy, and that plays fine, so it's really only the Deep Purple disc where I miss out on anything.
I am wondering if anybody technically inclined knows of an adjustment inside that I could tweak myself. I suspect that the laser is having trouble tracking out near the end of the disc. Having this happen on a $1300 player is EXREMELY frustrating!
tsteves 07-13-06, 10:13 PM hyxtryx
This does sound strange. I had intermittant problems before my Denon link cable stopped working. You might want to try a new CAT5e or CAT6 cable to replace it and see if that helps.

Anyone who sold their 3910 for the Tosh or the Sam probably should not have purchased the 3910 to begin with. It is so much more than just a DVD player. If you're not taking advantage of the audio side of the player you're wasting money. Not only do SACD's sound great but redbook CDs are exceptional as well. Chose your favorite female vocalist crank up the volume and close your eyes. Jazz fan? Toss in Miles Davis Sketches of Spain stereo SACD and see where it takes you.
When I finally do make the plunge into high def, the 3910 isn't leaving the rack.
tsteves 07-18-06, 07:47 PM I melted down and bought the HD-A1. Have I sold my 3910? No! I was tempted...
My Maggies might stop loving me if I did. From CD's to SACD's and DVD-A's there is no comparison.

Sorry for the dumb question (I haven't even seriously looked into the new HD players) but does your HD-A1 even play SACD's and DVD-A's? If not, are there any HD players, either out now or on the horizon, that will play both of these formats?
If and when I do upgrade, I'll need to move my 3910 to a different room, since I have limited space for components in my main system.

No, neither the Tosh nor the Sam play SACD's or DVD-A's. No mention of any of the future models being universal players.

Find a way to make it fit in your main system unless you have a better system in another room. :)
JBaumgart 07-18-06, 11:02 PM Find a way to make it fit in your main system unless you have a better system in another room. :)
Well that won't be necessary, at least for the foreseeable future, if none of the HD players will play SACD's and DVD-A's. I'll just keep the 3910 in my main system, and continue to enjoy its audio capabilities. When I do want to watch movies in HD, they'll just have to come through my DVR.
RowdyUSP40 07-19-06, 01:34 AM Sounds like most 3910 owners are on the same page. My 3910 will be in my system for years to come for playing music.
As for the HD players.... well.... not until there is a clear winner or a solid dual format player and at least new movie releases are easily had.
I'm really in no big hurry a lot of SD movies look damn good on my setup. (Depending on the transfer of course...)
kristina 07-19-06, 02:04 AM hey out there, i am using the 3910 to a pio 5060hd connected with hdmi, while the resolution of the pioneer is 768p, thus that mean that when i upscale throw the dvd player to 720p i am actually doublescaling and getting worst results.Sould i just leave the scaling to be done by the plasma display. Please help?
kristina 07-19-06, 02:07 AM Me again, does anyone know how to bypass the scaling of the 3910 and leave the 5060hd display to do the scaling?
Me again, does anyone know how to bypass the scaling of the 3910 and leave the 5060hd display to do the scaling?
If you are using component video connection, you can set the 3910 output to the native resolution of the source material - 480i - and your display will do all of the scaling/deinterlacing. I would try that as well as an output setting of 480p, which has the 3910 doing the deinterlacing. Try 'em both and do some critical viewing comparisons to determine which yields the best results. If you are using HDMI/DVI, I don't think 480i will be available. In that case, 480p is as "low" as you can go.

Hi guys,
I'm new to this forum so I apologize in advance if this question has already been asked a million times before. Can you purchase the latest firmware update on disc from Denon or another third party provider, or do you have to burn the discs yourself? The reason I ask is because I am not very computer literate.

Welcome to the forum jpaz70. :)
I am not very computer literate either. I think there is a link on the Denon Web site that may allow you to enter information so they can mail you the disk. That's how I got my last update. There is a hyperlink on AVS Home Page for Denon. I also would consider calling Denon Tech support if you don't want to do it on line. Good Luck.

Denon will send them to you for free.
If there is not an option to request them on the up date page, call CS and ask for a set.
Thanks for the information guys.
Has anyone actually ever spoken to a someone at Denon? I've called every number listed on their website, but I all get is the same recorded message and then I get put on eternal hold.

Well, I never spoke physically to a person a Denon, but I did requested the firmware update by sending them an email at contactservice@denonnj.com
I emailed them my dvd player serial and my address.
But that was in 11/10/2004.

Disagree on the Cds but agree with the SACD and DVD-As. I only have a handful of those so it really was a no brainer.
Thanks, Tranle. That's what I did. Did you get a reply from Denon or did the CDs just show up in the mail? I was just wondering what to expect.

ESS-6609-B seems to be the latest on the web site, but I sent my 3910 in last year to get the "won't pass BTB" issue fixed and they upgraded the firmware to ESS-6609-E. I can't tell you why that's not available for download from the web site, or if there are even later versions available if you request Denon to send you the firmware. I do know that I'm not excited about the discrepancy, though.

Yes, I did get a reply from a Denon support person. But at the beginning the 3910 did have more problem and they did not provide a downloadable firmware.
eliocon 07-30-06, 08:47 AM I just bought a Monoprice 5x1 HDMI switcher to switch between my 3910, HD Directv box and my Panasonic AE900. Everything works OK except the 3910's picture alternates between a picture and a blue screen every couple of seconds using either the DVI or the HDMI outputs. Bypassing the switcher shows no problem. All the 3910's output resolutions show this problem.
Does anyone have a Monoprice HDMI switcher working correctly with their 3910?
Hi bucky,
Did you ever get an answer to this. I have the same combo as you. I'm connecting with a 25' Monoprice cable (The really thick one) and I get the blinking between blue and the player. I tried using my 16' Monster DVI - HDMI cable with the Monster DVI - HDMI adapter and it alleviated the problem. I don't think the Denon likes the run to be over 20 feet. Have you found a fix for your situation?
Elio
Has anyone spoken with any Denon Rep to determine if/when we can get a 480i output via HDMI??
I see that many less expensive players can do this, so I'm still scratching my head why we Denon 3900 owners cannot.
Thx !!
I don't think the Faroudja chipset the 3910 uses allows 480i output period, the hardware does not support it at all. No player using this chipset can output 480i, not just the Denon ones.
Bummer ....
Thx ..
Does the 480i component out work well going into a high end scaler ??
Anyone ??
tsteves 07-30-06, 08:21 PM Cain,
It should. It has a very nice 480i output.

I have found that I can use longer HDMI cable (I don't have one that is longer than 16 feet anyway) between the Denon and the Monoprice 5x1 switch but I need to have a shorter run (e.g. 6 feet) between the Monoprice and my AE700. Use anything longer between the switch and the projector and I will see the same problem. Also, it doesn't matter which input on the switch I put my Denon on.

I'll be able to give you a better answer tonight when I try a new Gefen 4x1 HDMI switcher. I posted the problem in the <$3500 projector forum and got an recommendation to try it.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=701083
Just to let you know I could not get either the 2x1 Gefen HDMI or the Monoprice 5x1 switcher to work even with two 6' cables.
bucky63 08-01-06, 02:22 PM Well I hooked up my new Gefen 4x1 HDMI switcher and I could not get the HDMI output of the 3910 to sync up with my Panasonic AE900 projector. I tried adjusting the EQ pots on back of the switcher to no avail. I still had the flashing picture and audio dropouts. Has anyone else had problems with audio dropouts when using the 3910's HDMI output and a HDMI switcher?
I then tried the DVI out with a DVI to HDMI cable and it worked.
The EQ adjustment on the Gefen switcher does affect the picture quality as if you adjust it to far to one side you start getting sparkles and eventually lost the picture all together.
So I'm happy again, other then spending $280 on a new switcher. After trying 2 versions of the Gefen 2x1 HDMI switchers and the Monoprice 5x1 switcher, I found one that works (at least with the 3910's DVI output). I think it is pretty sad that this technology is so quirky.
FYI, I'm using a 30 foot Blue Jeans Series-2 HDMI cable between the switcher and the projector.

You're being way too kind calling it "quirky".

For those that have problem with HDMI:
I recently tried to hook my 3910 (bought 1/05) to a Sony Ruby projector using HDMI. As it did not connect (except for some occasional flicker) I handed the unit in to Denon. When I picked it up some 7 weeks later(!) I discussed the issue and its resolution with the tech. I was told that it had been updated with new firmware not available on-line or through mail that specifically addresses the HDMI isssue (DVI worked fine before). It now works fine.
bucky63 08-02-06, 10:54 AM Thanks IanB for your help. Do you know what firmware is on your 3910?
I just sent mine back to Denon for the Blacker the Black fix a month ago and they installed the new - E firmware on it.

Although tempted, my final decision is "no." PQ looks fantastic with my 3910, with no MB with my display, so I have successfully fought off the temptation, while waiting for the next generation high def players (preferably from higher end manufacturers like Denon or Onkyo).

"To make the Denon DVD-2910, 3910 and A1XV play DVDs from all regions:
1. Ensure there is no disc in the player.
2. Power off using the front panel On/Off button (not standby).
3. Press and hold Open/Close, Play and Skip Reverse (I<<).
4. Keep the above buttons held and Power-up the player using the On/Off button, holding the above buttons until the player's name disappears from the front panel.
5. Wait until the player finishes LOADING and the front panel of the player shows 0:00:00.
6. On the remote handset, press in sequence; 7 3 1 9 4 6 2 8
7. The unit should enter standby mode. On the front panel of the player, press the Standby button to turn the player back on.
8. To confirm the update, press on the front panel Stop and Skip Forward (>>I). The front panel should briefly display “Region_A2”. If not, then repeat the process 1-7 above.
This hack needs no firmware upgrade."
Sam
I've been playing with this hack trying to get it to work.
Prior to starting I did step 8 and got Region_A1
After going through all the steps, step 8 results in Region 1
Repeating the process results in Region_A1
So mine is just switching between Region_A1 and Region 1
I have yet to get Region_A2
I'm going to keep trying and am open to suggestions.
JohnGZ28 08-06-06, 08:05 PM Sam and Jason
Thank you both for your help with the DVD format and region code fix.
It worked brilliantly. This process did not affect the firmware update. So I believe I have the best possible outcome from both updates.
For your info, the region code that now displays on this machine is REGION_A1. Perhaps non-US, not-NTSC region 1 machines would update to REGION_A2 on their respective displays.
A quick check playing various disk formats, confirms, I can now play NTSC all regions and PAL all regions. The picture quality via HDMI is wonderful.
Thanks to you Forum members for you input and assistance enhancing the performance and enjoyment of this player.
Regards
Mike
Found this post.
Looks like I confused my readings. Region_A1 should be region free for my player.
When my first region 2 DVD arrives in a week or two (The Descent) I'll find out.

I tried this hack with a 3910 made March 2006. I powered off the player using the "of/on button." In step 4 when you are holding Open/close, Play, skip reverse buttons and power up (using on/off button, not standby) player goes INTO standby mode and stays there. Does not go into "on" mode until you release the "open/close, play, skip reverse buttons," then you will get the players name and loading. Is this a function of new firmware that you can't make the player region free anymore?

This is the latest firmware and region free :) Use this if you already have Denon Link 3 installed.
I just purchased a 3910 to replace a cheap Toshiba DVD-A player. It's also replacing a Sony SACD player.
My problem is that using the analog 5.1 outs to my Denon 5803 EXT-1 inputs I cannot get 5.1 sound. When I run test tones on the 3910 the right rear is the only place I get sound. I've read through some of the posts here and called Denon. I gave up hope when the tech said "you can't do that. You'll need to use an optical hookup." I explained a bit more but found him not to be helpful at all.
I've tried many things which I can rundown if necessary. I find the setup on the 3910 to be somewhat technically confusing to me and that may be my problem. With the Toshiba I just plugged it in and select multichannel from the DVD-A and away I went. I can't seem to get the 3910 to work.
I haven't tried using any digital hookups.
If the unit's defective I want to return it ASAP to the dealer.
Can anyone give me some pointers on how to troubleshoot this?
Thanks,
Dave
Zen Traveler 08-08-06, 11:03 AM Welcome to the forum mrpug,
Make sure on the DVD 3910 you have it set to 2 channel in the Digital Interface (i.e. second menu) HDMI Audio Set up. That would be my guess. Good luck. :)

HDMI Audio Setup is set that way.
As a test I hooked up the old Toshiba to EXT-2. I get 5.1 with no problem.
I guess my next move is swapping the 3910 and the Toshiba from EXT-1 to EXT-2 and see what happens.
What a pain.

Yep.
I only get sound from the right rear speaker.
I'm wondering if it's a setup issue with the 5803 BUT the Toshiba plays fine.
I popped an SACD disc in. Same thing. Not that that would change anything.

Don1959 08-08-06, 01:14 PM It sounds to me like there is a problem with the 5.1 analog outs on the 3910.... do you get 5.1 via digital from a DVD?
Try playing a standard DVD through the 5.1 analog... do you still only get the single channel..?
I would take the unit back to the dealer and have them hook it up and test it out....
If the problem is there with their equipment... get them to replace the unit...
Don
Don, I'll give that a try. Thanks.
I haven't tried any digital in/outs for audio yet. The 5803 doesn't support HDMI so I ran the HDMI out from the 3910 directly to the tv. That works fine.
The problem will be with SACD. They're only output via analog or 1394.
This is frustrating. Glad I bought this locally.
D
Here's the last test I did. Can someone verify that this looks right before I return the unit?
I took each of the 5 analog surround outputs of the 3910 (not including the sub) and ran them into 5 DIFFERENT analog inputs on the 5803. CD, DVD, VDP, VCR1, VCR2. Only VCR1 works. To me that isolated each output. It matched what I mentioned before when I said I was only getting sound out of the RR speaker. I'd say the analog outputs in the 3910 are dead except for the RR.

That's easy enough after what I've done so far. :D Actually swapping 2 would prove it. I'm done for awhile. This has me burned out. I'll give it a shot later.
My decision now is to call them or just show up at the store. :D
The "pain" for me is plugging and unplugging the 5803 & 3910. I hate doing that too much.
D
I still can't play the MP3 mono files that I have...
I also have this problem with mono MP3 files. I have a lot of "Spoken Words" files and CDs, and I would just love to make MP3 or DVD-A disks of them, because they save lots of space and are much more convenient to handle.
The 3910 appears to be playing them, but no sound, neither analog/5.1, analog/2ch, digital/Cinch or digital/Toslink. No matter whether the MP3 CDs are self-burned or bought commercially. The same applies to a mono DVD-A that I made with WaveLab. The 3910 recognizes the type and the tracks, and starts to play (time counter counts up). But no output of sound. :(
I truly believe this is a defect in the 3910.
JohnGZ28 08-14-06, 03:53 PM Don't know the answer to your question. Once my copy of The Descent arrives I'll post if Region_A1 will play a Region 2 disc.
Just got my copy of The Descent Region 2. Plays fine.
So for my 3910 Region_A1 is the multi region setting. Originally the display read Region_1. After completing the "push button" hack it reads Region_A1 and plays region 2 discs at least. :)
DirtRider 08-15-06, 05:25 PM I picked up a used 3910 and this looks like a great thread to read through. Unfortunately I went to print it out and found that at 10pt font it is nearly 2000 pgs long and that is a bit more reading than most of us probably care to do at this point. Are any gurus who have been following this thread willing to recap the main things we need to know to setup a 3910 properly? I have a denon 3805 receiver like many others here and have a sony kdf60xs955 lcd and am using hdmi and denon link. I have upgraded the firsmware so I am playing sacd through the denon link. I am betting quite a few people will be aquiring used 3910 players since the new ones are coming out and we'll probably get a lot of the same questions. If there was a reply at the beginning of the thread like on some other threads with the up to date relevant and universal information that would be supremely helpful. Thanks already for all the advice I've read here.
DirtRider, first of all, you might want to hook up analog connects to your receiver for SACD/DVD-A since the audio DACs are better in the player than your receiver. Second, it is generally preferred to make PQ adjustments (contrast, brightness, etc) in the display's menu rather than the player's menu, using a calibration DVD such as AVIA. Set IRE to 0 and black level to Normal, then calibrate, and you should be good to go.

I agree 100% with BillP's comment. I have the 3910 and the 3805, and I find noticeably better sound on all CD's and SACD's through the analog connections (EXT IN on the 3805) than through Denon Link. Similarly, I get better sound on redbook CD's using the analog connections than I do my using an optical or coax digital connection that leaves the DAC's in the 3805 to do the conversion. I am hardly a "golden ears," so if I am noticing differences, they are definitely there!
BTW, if you connect the 3910 to your TV using HDMI, as well as connecting the 3910 to your audio system through one of the other methods, then you will find that the audio tracks from the 3910 will play back through your TV at the same time as they are coming from the 3805-powered speakers. So be sure to turn down the volume on your TV all the way when you are watching DVD's that are been played on the 3910.

Maybe I'll try the analog connections. I know about the dacs being better in the 3910 but the convenience of sending digital to the receiver and letting it work out all the equalization is really nice. I do use hdmi straight to the tv but I have the speakers set to off. No way I'd let them corrupt my klipsch reference system.
I haven't calibrated with avia yet but I did notice that watching dark movies like u571 (only one i watched so far) gives a much clearer picture. Especially in depth. I can see rivets in the ship now that I didn't see before (around bulkheads and such). The faces are the brightest part of that movie and they are definitely more detailed.

Yes, I have a plasma set, and I find that there is more sharpness and detail when the 3910 sends its video to my TV using HDMI as compared to component video. I have calibrated both inputs using the Avia disc, and these differences are easily visible.

I have the 3910/3805 combo too, and have them connected both ways. I find myself using Denon Link almost all the time, as it sounds "excellent enough" with the receiver's EQ correcting for my rather serious room deficiencies (fireplace on one wall, plus lots of openings to other rooms). I also use an outboard amp (Odyssey HT3) which helps compensate too.

Just curious as to what kind of EQ adjustment can compensate for the fireplace and openings? And the amp, too, how is it compensating?

I just let my ears be the judge, and after running the Auto EQ (using Denon Link) it sounds better balanced across the entire frequency range, particularly at higher volumes. The amp doesn't compensate for the room deficiencies but it does add more detail and headroom. My receiver (3805) only has to power the side and rear surrounds so even in a far from perfect listening room it can handle this effortlessly. On certain high-rez surround recordings at lower volumes I do like to switch to analog using the 3910's bass management but 90% of the time I just use Denon Link.
I tried this hack and it worked for me I now play all my UK DVDs But I make no garentees on how it will work or not on yours so proceed at yer own risk
To make the Denon DVD-2910, 3910 and A1XV play DVDs from all regions:
The front panel should briefly display “Region_Ax” where x is the original region number. If not, then repeat the process 1-7 above.
Let me know if it works for you
I just let my ears be the judge . .
Yeah, me too. And that's a good enough reason!

I still have the 3805/3910 combo and use Denon link 90% of the time as well. For me the auto eq smooths things out and sounds better for most listening. For some serious listening I use stereo analog.

I just ordered a 3910 (great closeout pricing) and I'm wondering about the DVI video level range setting. It would seem to me since it is only 8 bits (0-255) that by using video levels (16-239?) instead of pc levels (0-255) you are throwing away precious bits. Why not use the full range available? It would seem like it wouldn't be too difficult to adjust the 0 IRE and 100 IRE points without having BTB and WTW available.
rmongiovi 08-23-06, 02:36 PM In the rightmost setup screen, there's a setting for whether the 3910 is in audio mode or video. What does this setting actually do? Is this in the manual someplace and I'm just too blind to see it?

If I remember correctly it means when you have it set to "Audio," it plays back high rez (DVD-A/SACD) first through your analog connections without having to go through choosing the lesser Dolby or Redbook track on the particular disk(I don't have HDMI so I don't know how this is effected). When you play a DVD you can still go through the digital connection by choosing which soundtrack you want to hear/watch.
blindcat7 08-23-06, 06:52 PM Has Denon ever added correct detection and squeezing/zooming of 4:3 and non-anamorphic widescreen material? I am interested in possibly getting one of these players since DVD-A/SACD is as important to me in a player as movie sound and video, but I really need this feature.
Also, how much manipulation is required to move between formats once the player is set up? Can I set it to always play the non-video track of a DVD-A, to prioritize which layer of an SACD to play, and so on?
Before anyone starts in on the lazy listener comments, I am legally blind and, while I still get a decent amount from good picture, I cannot read OSDs or panel displays. I can memorize a fairly complicated remote without too much difficulty, and can also memorize patterns of button pushes and all of that, but the less I have to do that the better, and there is always the frustration of having the player miss a button push which can lead to a lot of confusion and annoyance. A certain amount is unavoidable, but I would rather minimize it.
My dream is a player that will allow me to select my preferences and priorities for display and audio and follow that as long as the disc I am spinning is flagged correctly. Imagine being able to select a preference for DTS on movies and having a player go there automatically when the track is available in your language of choice. Sigh, I can dream. Sadly, I think that it is likely I will have a cure for my RP before this ever happens. Of course, the latter would be much better anyway.
Mostly, I am wishwashing between the 3910 and spending the extra on a 3930, I'm told that these will be better than the top Pio player which was the only one I know much about in this price range. I'll likely be hooking up whichever I get to a Panasonic digital reciever via analog outputs, though I may try DVD-A through HDMI if that will work with the 3910/30 for the full digital path.
Thanks,
Chris
Don1959 08-23-06, 07:09 PM The 3910 has settings for SACD that allow you to pick which version you wish to hear... multi SACD, 2 Ch SACD or CD...... also it will default.... if no multi CH SACD.. it will play the 2 CH SACD..... For DVD audio (as talked about above) there is a setting to choose what tracks to play.... when set to audio the 3910 will first try to find and play the DVD AUDIO tracks.... if there is no DVD audio it will play the DD or DTS tracks....
As far as the squeeze mode for 4:3 material.. it still has to be manually selected ... no auto detection..... it can be a bummer as there is no button on the remote to toggle the setting.... has to be done thru the OSD or at the player....
Hope this helps....
Don
bucky63 08-24-06, 11:20 AM Has Denon ever added correct detection and squeezing/zooming of 4:3 and non-anamorphic wide screen material? I am interested in possibly getting one of these players since DVD-A/SACD is as important to me in a player as movie sound and video, but I really need this feature.
Denon, for what ever reason, did not include the auto squeezing in the 2910 and the 3910 (maybe others as well) but did include it on the older 2200 and the 2900 DVD players and new 2930 and 3930.
So to deal with not having an auto squeeze for 4x3 material displayed in a 16x9 display requires one to go in the DVD players Setup and turn the squeeze mode to ON. This will take some sideways and down arrowing to get to the right selection menu. The 3910 allows the user to also change it at the front panel.
Now a non-anamorphic 16x9 picture will be a little more challenging because you have to zoom the picture at the display to fill the 16x9 display. Some displays like my Panasonic 900 projector do not permit zooming the picture when the display is receiving 720p or 1080i. So to get the picture to display correctly I have to switch the DVD player's HDMI or DVI output to 480p and then use the displays zoom to fill the screen.
All these can "problems" be can be solved by programing a remote.
shokhead 08-25-06, 07:54 AM What would a used 3910 go for or whats a fair price?
Vorious 08-25-06, 08:07 AM I have previously owned a 2900 & a 3800 & have recently bought a 3910. I had some probelems with both previous players & now after only 3 weeks, the 3910 goes faulty, am I mad to keep buying Denon!!!!
Anyway, the fault is that the bottom third of the picture now sits on top & has two bright green lines running through it, great!
Getting to the point, I am considering selling it & going to a DVD A1, not the XV, the older model, which can be bought second hand for 3910 money. My question is, would it be as good as the 3910, particularly for 2ch CD? I listen to more CD's than I do watch films on it & was wondering if anyone has had a direct comparison between the players & could they give me their opinion please.
I am using the player with a Denon AVC A1SR connected by the Denon Link. I thought the 3910 was fantastic & a noticable improvement on the 3800, however I'm thinking the A1 would be more reliable given it's originally hefty pricetag!?
Thanks,
Greg
Shawners 08-25-06, 08:29 AM Hey everyone
Its been awhile since I've been on here.
I've been trying to get the 3910 update disk from Denon
for over a year now..with no avail.
I've left e-mails that never got replied to, and finally called customer service
@dec-jan '05 (?) and really complained.I got put threw to a Jeff or Jim , someone really high up who apoligized and said he had a set of the latest updated cd's he'd send me right out . STILL HAS NEVER HAPPENED.
I called yesterday and talked with a nice CSR named Dwayne who sent the update to me by e-mail to make sure I get it.
I told him I don't have the computer skills or outside software to burn them from the website. He told me that by him sending them by e-mail I wont need the special software , or have to worry about zipping and unzipping.Forgive me for second guessing him , but I don't want to mess up my player and have to send it in for service.
Soooo...My Question...is he right. Can I just open the e-mail he sent and save the 3 files individually to desktop , and burn a cd from there and not have to worry .
........................Thanx , Shawners

They seem to be going for $700-$900 on Audiogon, even more on Ebay. If you're patient you should be able to find one for right around the $700ish range.
Yes you need nero or such they come with instructions which are simple if you follow along let me know worst case and I can send you a copy

One more dumb question. Does it play PAL disc over HDMI and component output or just HDMI? Just curious. I am looking at buy this DVD player. I want the DVD 3930 but it loses ILink. I have a Yamah 4600 and I really want to use the Ilink to play my SACD/DVDA. I am really bummed that the new DVD 3930 does not have ILINK. Denon just lost a customer for this DVD player. Oh well. But out of the box, Denons sold in the US are limited to Region 1 (U.S.) and region-free DVD's. Some people have posted hacks that convert the 3910 to region-free operation, but I haven't tried it myself.

mobster lobster 09-26-06, 09:59 AM Just picked up a 3910 for about $800. It was an open box unit from Tweeter.
Very nice picture quality compared to my dvd-2200 but I'm most excited about the audio quality. Less bright, smoother with much better depth than the dvd-2200, it really sounds great through my B&W n802's. I might even consider selling off my CD only Sony XA7ES flagship and using the 3910 instead for redbook audio.
The only quibble is that it seems a little bass shy. My sub (a martinlogan depth) is high level input wired from my two channel amp, so that as far as the surround sound receiver is concerned its feeding a pair of 'large' loudspeakers through the front channel preamp out (which in turn feeds into a spare input on my two channel preamp), so I have disabled all bass management and set the 3910 for 'source direct'.
Mobster lobster
I have 3910 and seems to me it prefer mids. It is really bass shy. I compare it with my AVC A1SR. I decided send 3910 for little tuning to casea.eu (I am from Czech Republic). After tuning it is a new player, with deep and dynamic bass, crisp highs and controlled mids. I really happy now.

Help me understand this - shouldn't any decent DVD or CD player have almost near flat frequency response across the entire 20-20,000 hz range? If so, isn't the rest of your equipment and how it's set up the real issue?

Denon 3910 is connected to Denon AVC A11SR and speakers BW 7/1/CNT and Velodyne SPL1000R. I compare digital and analog connection to AV amplifier. And before modification was digital connection better to my ears. It was more linear. Analog connection has a lot of mids a and highs and less bass. And after modification is sound similar to digital connection to amplifier, but sounds clearer.
Almost every CD/DVDs has flat response, but sounds different.
shokhead 09-30-06, 07:30 AM Well i still go back and forth with my 79AVI,dig and analog and just cant seem to hear much difference. At first setup i did until i reset the receivers x over from 60 to 80 to match the player. More playing around is needed,oh darn.
pbarach 10-01-06, 07:24 AM I hear a significant difference between digital and analog, which I attribute to the fact that my 3910 has better DAC's than my receiver (Denon 3805). The analog connection yields a wider soundstage and a less in-your-face overall sound. (both units are set to do the crossver at 80 Hz).
I would guess that if someone is getting inferior sound with analog as compared to digital, if all other things are equal then the analog interconnects must be subpar. I'm not using $1000 cables, either, just a $50 set.
If analog doesn't sound any different than digital, then either the DAC's in the listener's receiver are not noticeably better or worse than those in the 3910, or else the listener and/or his speaker/room setup isn't good at noticing differences that another listener in a different room might perceive.

I have no idea what the purpose of this entire post is...?
If you can hear a significant difference between the digital and analog connections to your 3805, then either you're not taking advantage of DenonLink3, you don't have your components calibrated/adjusted correctly, or you should be hired as an Ear Ninja...I'm not sure such an occupation exists, but I'm sure there's a niche for such a talent!
Being able to take advantage of the 3805's auto-eq/room equalization seems to far outweigh the miniscule differences that might be discerned by using the DAC's in the 3910 instead of the 3805.
Futhermore, if $1000 cables are unnecessary and $50 interconnects are all I need to be able to get superior sound, then please...tell me who makes your cables? Not that I subscribe to brazilian-dollar cables or anything, but I like a nice build quality as much as the next guy. Frankly, I'm just using the supplied DenonLink cable...:)
Finally...if my digital connection sounds better, something is either wrong with my AVR, my ears, my cables, my room setup, my DAC's, my seating position...etc? Are you sure it couldn't be the fact that we're taking advantage of one of the key features of a matching Denon AVR? That we're finally enjoying the long-awaited DenonLink3 in all it's digital multichannel hi-rez glory?
I don't mean to challenge another member's post, but come on...

Why not challenge, if you don't agree with it? ;)
I say just trust your own ears, not the specs or what others say should sound best. I also love the Denon Link 3, but many say they can hear the difference and prefer the analog - they must have a near perfect listening room so that the Auto EQ doesn't do much for them.
P.S. Anyone want to buy a nice set of 5.1 analog cables?
Badabbing 10-12-06, 11:23 AM I'm still stuck on the post were you tune the 3910.
I guess if "tuning" meant adjustment of the audio/video section within the Setup area of the 3910, then my appologies. But the last time I looked I didn't see any Spark Plugs portruding from the side of this box. :p
SC
The analog vs digital thing is discussed frequently, if you don't NEED much room correction for your setup, you will probably prefer the analog outs to a 5.1 direct input on your receiver. The VAST majority of setups benefit from room equalization, even more than they benefit from the better audio circuitry of the 3910 vs say something like a 3805 or 3806.
So for MOST people, going digital into the receiver and using room correction, avoiding any unnecessary A/D conversions, will yield the best sound.
If your room requires no, or almost no room correction, analog outputs may sound better since you're not doing much with room correction anyway.
"Tuning" means modify. :) Sorry for using this word, in my language it means modification. I didnt realized it. On web pages ww.casea.eu you can see it.
The analog vs digital thing is discussed frequently, if you don't NEED much room correction for your setup, you will probably prefer the analog outs to a 5.1 direct input on your receiver. If you need room correction, then correct the room, not the sound coming from the speakers.

I just read in another forum that NEC JUST developed a new chip that'll play both of the new formats. How is it that Denon already knows that they'll have a player (and a release date) that will play both formats? And SACD and DVD-A too? If all this is true then it DOES sound like a nice player.

Denon probably won't go with a universal player at this stage of the game. They either go HD DVD or BD. We might hear something at CES in January. I have my hopes up and it isn't blu. Their software for the discs - too inconsistent.

Has the definition of "universal player" changed?
It used to mean SACD + DVD-A.
Will there ever be a player that does everything?

I think it will change. Unfortunately SACD has been relegated to the classical market. DVD-A seems to be hanging on by a thread.
A universal player will be one that plays HD, Blu, DVD, and CDs. SACD and DVD-A will get dropped.
georgep1 10-17-06, 10:58 AM Has anyone heard of any planned future 3910 updates? The 3910 specs on the Denon site has listed 1080p through HDMI with an asterisk (*) for well over a year now. Has anyone else noticed this?

I'd be surprised if there are any more updates and SHOCKED if the 3910 ever outputted 1080p. Why would they do that? The 3930 has replaced the 3910.
georgep1 10-17-06, 11:45 AM I am just repeating what Denon has indicated on their website, and it was indicated long before the 3930 was released. I am not saying they will provide an update; just putting it out there as I have no insight on it whatsoever. Maybe someone has info from Denon on this issue.

I wasn't questioning your eyesight, georgep1. :) I just think it must be a typo, or referring to the capabilities of the Sil chip itself. It's been so long since the last update which added DLIII and wrapped up a few remaining bugs that had not been fixed with previous updates. I think they've fixed all the bugs and don't have any more features that they can - or want to - add. The 3930 is carrying the banner now at that price point.

Maybe they'll go the route of the turntable. Cheap ones will be available along with supre high dollar ones.
I like SACDs and have a small collection but I'm just not finding titles in genres that I like. The same for DVD-A not many new titles coming out by popular artist. We need JayZ to drop his new album in SACD or DVD-A to get other artist to adopt the format. Unfortunately his fans are happy with a bootleg cut downloaded on thier iPod.

Has anyone done a good comparison of the difference in audio quality between DVD-A & SACD vs. HD-DVD? I always wondered if it would be possible to get DVD-A (lossless) quality along with HD video on DVD concerts. Can the new formats support this, or come close enough so that there is no discernable difference?

An A/B would be nigh impossible unless the exact same material could be auditioned on both formats and that's not possible at this time. Theoretically, HD-DVD/BD are capable of better sound quality than DVD-A times eight discrete channels. So, yes, we will get our DVD-A quality audio with 1080p video!

I had thought about selling my 3910 but decided to keep it only for the SACD/DVD-A. That is all I use it for anymore, CDs, SACD/DVD-A. Video is strictly the A1. I don't seem to have the problems with it that some have. Since May, 3 lip/sync issues and one freeze and that is with rentals from Netflex. The 3910 and the A1 have a permanent home in my rack. Not bad for a 1G player.
Hell will freeze over before the WAF (wife approval factor) let's me have 2 players. Besides, the 3910 does a great job.

Bet she has more than two pair of shoes. :)
bucky63 10-20-06, 09:59 AM I just broke down and bought a open item Tos A1 for $350. I am floored by the picture quality of HD-DVD! The SD-DVD picture quality was also very good but as an every day DVD player the A1 would be harder to live with because of the slow response. Very similar to my first Toshiba DVD player back in '97.
I'm not planning on selling the 3910 anytime soon as I have 60 or so DVD-A and SACDs plus a couple of hundred SD-DVDs.
I'm starting to see how the new HD format is making me think about going back to renting movies. I hate paying $20 to $35 a movie and them being stuck playing it one only one player. But I guess that is how I started with SD-DVDs too.
I used to have a nice simple system with the 3910, the 3805 and a HD Directv box. Now I have the above plus a DVD recorder, D-VHS player, the A1, a HTPC, an I-pod and a 4x1 HDMI switcher. Adding a BR DVD player seems inevitable but I'm running out of room and inputs. Plus I'm not going to spend $1000 on a BR player.
Hell will freeze over before the WAF (wife approval factor) let's me have 2 players. Besides, the 3910 does a great job.
That sums it up for me as well. The 3910 is more than she would have spent on a player (but I'm glad I did). With no MB problem with my display, and an outstanding PQ, I'm set until the high def players get their act together better in future generations.

It may do that on occasion. My 5900 was exhibiting that behavior and it got progressively worse over a period of 3-4 months. I found that by leaving the disc in the player, powering off, with the front panel button, and then powering on, it usually fixed the problem. After awhile though even that did not work. I sent the unit in to be fixed and they replaced the traverse assembly-the laser pickup. I have seen other posts here where others have had the same problem, and in fact when I talked to Denon/NJ they mentioned they were aware of the problem.
Now, I'm not saying that's the problem with your unit, but I would keep an eye on it and see if it gets worse. With my 5900 the trouble started with SACD discs and then some DVDs, and then eventually it would have trouble with almost any type of disc. At that point I sent it in for repair. Works perfect now.
I've run into that problem a few times with commercial CDs. My 1600 (which I still have) would play anything. My solution is to copy the CD to my Mac's hard drive, and reburn the songs onto a CD-R at 4x speed.
The 3910 sometimes skips on my CD-R CDs that were burned too fast. I find that a CD burned at 4x will always play on my 3910.

Call Denon service in New Jersey. Depending on whether the unit is still under warranty or not and your location, they'll tell you who to contact and where to send it.
My 5900 was out of warranty and I live in Northern California so Denon told me to contact Gold Crown Electronics in LA. The cost for parts and labor was $188.60. The actual part replaced was a "traverse mechanism assembly".

I called Denon's 800 number and talked with a tech. He gave a pretty lame excuse of an answer, but said to try cleaning the laser either with a disc cleaner or with a qtip with alcohol on it (if it's out of warranty). Could help if it's dirty I guess. He also said any fingerprint or grime on the disc could cause the problem because of the 3910 having a very sensitive laser. Mine's out of warranty and I've cleaned cd player lasers before with good success, so I may try that.

It depends on how much you have invested in the 3910. Personally I would repair the 3910 as I think it's a much better overall player than the Oppo. The 971 isn't SACD/DVD-A capable either.
I had a lot of money in my 5900(SDI, etc) so $200 to get a new pickup assembly was a no brainer.

So about $550-575(Oppo + Ipod) for the 3910, another 100 to ship it, that's $675, plus 200 to fix it, so for $875 John can have a 3910 with a brand new laser assembly, that's not too bad a deal. :)

Not a good deal at all considering one can buy a B stock unit from an authorized dealer with FULL warranty for ~10% less than that.

I just bought a brand new 3910 for less than $700 from an authorized dealer. Ordered it Saturday last week and got the following Tuesday AM. The price was lower than the employee discounted one (my brother is an exec at the Denon parent company). I love this unit.
Okay, so it's not a good deal, I still think it's worth fixing as opposed to just scraping it and spending the cost of fixing it on an Oppo. You're going to spend the same amount of money and I think the 3910 is a far better player than the Oppo. :)
