I too, have spent two frustrating weekends trying to get the R5000-HD to work with Vista.

2. Upon connecting the USB cable, Windows reported that it installed a DVB-T USB 2.0 Adapter. (I had not seen the DVB-T message in previous attempts.)

3. Windows then reported "USB Device Not Recognized."

OK....I have not tried Vista with a R5000HD as I have enough sense to leave well enough alone on everything but a test machine this early on with a new O/S....

HOWEVER

Last week I "lost" the R5000HD device on a Windows XP machine - several days after I had done the most recent Windows Critical Update.

Strangely enough, I tried everything - including a system restore with no luck, so I finally took every Nextcom or R5000HD reference out of the registry and uninstalled every USB device in the device manager - on the next boot it found the R5000HD - but identified it as - you guessed it - a DVB-T USB device.

When I tried to force it to us the Nextcom Driver it said that the driver contained no info for that device.

So, I am wondering if this is truly a Vista issue - as the same thing happened in XP after the last critical update.

To make a long story short - after 3 hours, I used Acronis TruImage and restored an image of the 20 Gig C:\ drive in 10 minutes and was done with it - after I did all the Windows Updates from the last 3 months that were not installed on the image.

Why the Nextcom device disappeared - why it would not detect again - and why it came up as a USB DVB-T Device are somewhat of a mystery. But I wonder if something has changed - in Vista and now XP with the new critical updates - that have caused this.

HELP Please!
If this helps-
My Vista laptop lists the r5000 as 'Nextcom,LLC -- R5000-HD' with driver listed as 'C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\NxtcmUSB.sys' file version '1.03.0375.0' and Hardware ID listed as 'USB\Vid_0547&PID_1002'

In the registry, under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\Vid_0547&PID_1002\another number\ , 'DeviceDesc' lists the inf file, vid/pid, and device description. The inf file is oem8.inf in my case, which Vista copied the original inf file to. Maybe deleteing this inf file would help (so it has to use the original).

I just recieved my vip211 modded unit yesterday. I've installed all the drivers, and windows appears to see everything properly, however I'm not able to record any valid streams. Looking at the av files in a hex editor show them to be pretty much all 0x00FF and 0xFFFFF with small spurts of real data.

When I 1st ran the r5000hd app after plugging the box in, I recieved an error message stating something about the app being unable to update firmware (I assume this has something to do with updating the firmware on the r5000hd box to match the driver level?). I don't see any way to force it to try again, but if I OK out of the box, everything looks alright, and the app is able to connect and control the box.

The exact error message is:
Error: USB device not configured
Firmware load Failed

I've tried the box on two computers now with exactly the same results . I'm betting this error is the reason why my box doesn't work. Has anyone else seen this? Any idea what I might be able to do to fix this?

Look in the Device Manager and see what is listed USB controlers. Also try unplugging the USB cable and reconnecting it. John

Ok, I just pulled a PCI USB 2.0 card out of the closet and stuck it in the machine so im 100% sure I'm dealing with USB 2.0. No change, I still recieved the firmware error on intial hookup and output streams are still corrupt.

Just a reminder about the TitanTV integration daylight saving time bug, which still isn't fixed if I remember correctly: any event scheduled using TitanTV integration before today for a program today or later will be off by an hour.

The Nextcom driver look OK. My drivers for the USB controller seem to more clearly indicate that it's USB2. So maybe check for an new USB card driver.
You should be recording TS files, which is selected when you set up the properties for the recording application. AV files are only used by Nextcom for debugging and are not playable.
When recording do you get any failed transfers?

I tried the newest drivers out there, no change. However, I noticed that the pci card and the onboard USB chipsets were the same. I moved the box to one with a non-VIA chipset (ALi on that box), and it is mostly working now. I am able to record, however there is a large amount of blocking and such (like if it were a weak signal) in recorded files, while the live output of the box is perfect.
The one issue I see with the ALi card is that there are no drivers for it i can find. When I try to install the drivers off their website, it says that they're older than the default MS drivers in XP sp2, and I'd be better off no installing them. I tried anyways, and of course, they were right. Nothing worked til I reverted back.
Am I at the point of needing to buy a specific USB card or is there something I might do with my current equipment to fix the remaining blockiness?

Sounds like the USB connection to the R5000 is USB 1.0 (rather than 2.0). So it will record, but it can't keep up with the incomming stream. Go out and buy a $17 NEC based PCI-USB2.0 card.

System is a AMD 64 3800+ with 1GB ram and ATI x1300, so I doubt thats it. I've just been using videoredo up to this point to check the files out -- works perfectly fine with OTA HD from my fusion card. I've also been limiting recordings to stations like HDNET I know to be mpeg2.

I know my USB controller is supposed to be usb 2.0, is there anyway to know for sure what speed a device might be connected at?

Go to Device Manager under system properties (I assume you know how to get there) and scroll down to Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Open the + plus and you will see all kinds of USB connections. If you see USB2 Enhanced Host Controller, then you've got USB2.0. If it's not listed, then you don't. But by your description of your computer, you probably do have 2.0.

If you do View Devices By Connection in the Device Manager, you can see what type of port it's connected to. In my experience not every USB 2.0 controller actually says USB2 there, but it might say Enhanced.

Need help....! I just upgraded my computer from a P4 3.0GHZ to an AMD X2 5200+. Since then I can't get a capture. Can anyone recommend a PCI USB 2.0 card that is known to be reliable. I have been to the R5000 website and the only card that I can find from their list of 4 is the PPA card. I ordered it from Newegg and the card came with the VIA chipset. Can anyone provide me a link to a card that works. I have without archiving for 2 weeks and I'm getting itchy.

Anyone know, is this fixed yet? If so, does the fix involve a download or will the website itself take care of the necessary adjustments?

Thanks for the heads up btw. I have some recordings set for the next couple of days and it's good to know...

Update: I did a couple of recordings yesterday and they seemed to go off fine. Can I thus assume that the issue has been resolved--or did I just get lucky?

Ok, I was finally able to find a NEC based USB2.0 card. That fixed all my issues. The receiver is recording beautifully now. This hassle is just further reason to dislike VIA.

jediod, I ended up with a Belkin 3-port USB card from CompUSA. They had nice clear packaging so I could see the chipset before I bought it to make sure it was a NEC. I did notice that the 5-port Belkin's seemed to use the ALi chipset, so I'd recommend going to a box store where you can see the cards. Also, newegg does cary the adaptec card recommended on the webpage (called the usb2connect - doesn't come up if you search on the adaptec model number), but newegg shipping has been a real pain over the last month (3 out of 3 orders for me delayed, missing tracking info, or misshipped.)

Dish network recently made software upgrades available to the vip-211 receiver that groups the high-def and standard-def channels together at the original 3-digit channel. There is now no way via the remote (and the R5000-hd) that I have found to tune to the standard def channel directly. For most channels this is fine, but for Discovery, Food, HGTV and a few others that run differing HD/SD programming lineups it makes it impossible to record the SD channel any longer.

I spent about 25 minutes with Dish customer service and they confirmed that you can no longer direct tune the SD channel when there is a HD equivalent. They said this is a ‘feature’ and there is no plan to change the way the tuning now works.

I don’t know if we can get Sage and/or the Nextcom folks to get a work around, but for now I’m no longer able to record our houses 2 most popular channels.

You can return to the previous, non-grouped functionality via a non-intuitive setting. Go to Menu->6 System Setup->8 Local Channels. Push the "Chan Display" button. On the display that pops up, change "Dish HD Channels" to "Disable". It doesn't disable the HD channels, it simply no longer groups them with the SD channels. This allows me to record Food SD and HD like I did before.

FWIW, beside E* destroying their HD feeds of SHO and HBO (to go along with HDNET/HDNETMovies), HBO decreased their bitrate ever so slightly on their distribution of HBO-HD East Tuesday Morning.

The total bitrate for everything was cut from 14.25Mb/s to 14.20Mb/s.

Thus, for example, Island, which came in at 13.74Mb/s Video 2 months ago - and still had issues, was 13.70Mb/s Video on Wednesdays airings.

While it is clearly not enough that anyone could probably see even with close examination, it is another move in the wrong direction.

As of this time, HBO-HD West is still set at 13.10Mb/s total max.

This works nicely... Quite the intuitive menu item "disable HD" = "don't group them with SD channels"

Who designed that sort of UI??!?!

I am surprized that this isn't something that the E* tech-support person knew, or could find in their knowledge base.

For me, mostly that is true. Most of my machines use VIA onboard USB. However, I did also have issue with an onboard ALi USB controller, though I believe others use them without issue.

I had thought the bitrates were higher on 148 but the numbers you are finding would suggest the opposite? Out of curiousity, what are you using to measure bitrates? tsreader? Thanks for posting this info as HD picture quality is unfortunately heading in the wrong direction. Just comparing my local OTA HD networks to the same channel received from Dish shows the effect of their retransmission. I love my VIP622 and the ability to record with the R5000 installed but I don't know what will cause DBS providers to improve picture quality.

I haven't read this entire post, but wasn't aware of any problems. I have been using it to record sd/hd from C-Band for nearly 2 years now. Best thing I have invested in. Recording C-Band HD from HBO/SHO/Starz is great. I haven't had any issues to speak of. It changes the satellite, tunes the channel and works very well. The best part of it is that it works with Sagetv, making it much more like a dvr. I don't use sage for playback. I use a roku HD1000/Photobridge for that. All works very well.

2 different things.

HBO-HD West is the HBO West Coast Feed on 127W - not E*'s 148W.

And, fwiw, 4 days after HBO changed the East Coast HD feed back to 14.25Mbps.

I've given up on E*. The new mpeg2 encoders on 148W have small errors that E* has seen - but says they can live with them - in the waning days of MPEG2.

The better question to ask yourself, why did they change the encoders in the first place - because the logical reason isn't reassuring.

thanks for the clarification. since I know you are fairly discriminating, if you had you had to select the "best" option for an HBO-HD feed from Dish, which would you suggest? I need to make some changes because of weak signal from 129 and currently I don't have anything pointed at 127. I was considering adding a dish to see 148 but from your comments is this a waste of time? Are the errors you are seeing grossly noticeable or only detected in your recordings?

Maybe its over my head as I don't understand why they would change encoders. I realize that things are not looking good as far as picture quality is concerned but would just like to choose the optimal HB0-HD feed to view and record.

HBO Overnight - "Sexy Beast"

C Band 127W 4DTV 118 = 10.40Mbps Video

E* 110W 9456 = 9.91Mbps Video 2k Video Error

E* 148W 9440 = 10.39Mbps Video Several small video Errors

Can anyone looking at a still of any of the 3 tell the difference - probably not.

The higher bitrate has a better chance for less macroblocking, but again, will it be noticable on most scenes - no - and you would be forced to look hard and compare errors to see it.

I probably should have run D* just for the sake of it, but as its not 1920x1080i, has twice the frames in a GOP and has 50% less I frames, I am not sure it would be of any real value.

Thanks for taking the time to do a comparison. Its sad to see those numbers getting so low. I'll probably try pointing at 148 this weekend so I can compare. I would have expected Cband to be much higher than what you found, are they also dropping their bitrates? If this trend continues, upscaled SD-DVDs will look as good as HBO-HD without the macroblocking. As it stands now, I can't imagine recording anything with my R5000 from Starz to save.

How, and with what, are you going to play back these R5000-HD MPEG4 H2.64 on NYC HD Local recordings at full Bps/Resolution?

MPC with CoreAVC.

I moved to where there is no local HDTV OTA.

I built an R5000-HD Media Server with (4) Dish 211 STB's and was happily capturing Dish HD locals in MPEG2 and playing them with my (2) MyHD 120/130 cards until Dish recently switched my HD locals to MPEG4 H2.64 just like the Starz-HD and other newer Dish HD channels.

I now either need a reliable media player for MPEG4 H.264 720/1080i HDTV .ts files captured from Dish Network locals-----

----- or, is there any MPEG4 H.264 HDTV to MPEG2 Conversion Software to allow me to play the converted captures on a MyHD card?

MPC 6.4.x with CoreAVC 1.3 works pretty well on Dish MPEG4 H.264 720p/1080i.

I have the same issues as those earlier with the DVB-T driver problems, but I am running an AMD 690 chipset on my Abit F-I90HD motherboard with a core 2 duo processor. I simply cannot get the computer to recognize the box. It keeps installing DVB-T drivers, and when I try and force the Nextcom drivers it says that they are not for my device. HELP!

Chris

PS - This is a new build running XP.

I just bought an NEC USB 2.0 card. I still cannot install the R5000HD as it keeps installing the USB DVB-T device. I guess the latest Windows update killed me. If I cannot get this fixed I am in big trouble.

There's a section on the Nextcom site's FAQ about rouge devices. Try reading through that and see if it helps. You really shouldn't be having any problems installing the R5000.

Good luck.

I do agree with you that it seems like its one of the latest Windows updates that does this.

I found the same thing on a machine that had been running a R5000HD through one USB slot when I changed it to another USB slot (it seems to go through the driver install again if you move usb slots).

This is without a doubt a problem with Windows update. I wiped the hard drive and started over, but this time I installed the R5000HD before doing any updates. It works perfectly on the stock motherboard USB slots. (Wasted $25 on the NEC Card) The only other issue that could have caused this is that I installed a DVICO Fusion card last time before trying to install the R5000HD; this time the R5000HD went first.

Regardless, I think Nextcom needs to find a fix - because you know Microsoft won't.

Chris:

I assume then that you did not try the rouge driver fix in the Nextcom FAQs that I mentioned in an earlier post?

The "windows update" issue, is that some retard Taiwanese company sneaked in a SIGNED driver for their DVB-T adapter using Cypress DEFAULT VID:PID combination that shows up after the device is powered up.

If you disable "Check windows update for new drivers" during driver search prompt, or if you don't connect to internet while installing this device, it shouldn't be a problem. Also, scanning c:\windows\inf for the device string "DVB-T /whatever that shows up during install" and removing the offending inf file would work.

HDTVFanAtic
04-23-07, 02:32 AM
The problem is, even if you had the R5000HD drivers and software installed previously, you used to be able to allow it to look for those drivers with no ill effect - and it found the proper R5000HD drivers with no ill effect.

With no notice, this now changes - and the fact is even a Windows System Rollback will not correct the issue once the DVB-T drivers are installed.

Same with deleting the item in the device manager and then scanning for new devices or rebooting - as Windows will automatically reinstall the DVB-T drivers without asking at that point - once the damage is done.

timecop

The proper solution is of course to have R5000HD boot with a proper VID/PID, but I guess with a $550 device they can't afford a $0.20 serial EEPROM to do it properly. Second problem is microsoft allowing a driver with manufacturer default VID/PID to pass through certify process, but thats not as important as the 1st point.

I can tell you that in my case there were 478 files with the term DVB-T in it - and none in the Windows\inf directory.

If interested it seems it came from cebdaldr.inf and cebda150.inf

Getting a bit bugged here. Sent three email messages to r5000-hd requesting info on best upgrade path. No response to any of the three. Before I commit money, even if I think this sounds like a solid product, I need an answer to a simple question. Have a brand-new, still-in-the-box E* 211 purchased on eBay. What is best upgrade path? Before or after putting it in service with Dish?

I would suggest after. Make sure everything is working AOK with your dish service on the new 211 before you send it off to nextcom

I think it's stated on their website somewhere that you need to make sure the unit works before sending it to them. I've never had a product from either of the little dish companies, but it seems to me you would have to put it into service to see if it works.

Oops. Looks like Neosg beat me to it.

The web site says the unit needs to be working, but that doesn't mean you need a subscription. Receiving a demo channel is enough.

Sorry, but I went through 20 or so pages and didn't see a solution to my problem so if this has already been posted, I apologize...

I've been using the r-5000 for about two years without any issues (dish6000), but one thing that I have noticed (maybe it has always done this?) is that when I power off my PC and I had scheduled recordings, that only *some* of them are left in the pvr listing. Do I have to "save" the list before I power down the PC? Why does it only keep some of the scheduled recordings, and truncate the rest? It takes me hours sometimes to find out all the best times to record things, and then they just *disappear* from the list if I reboot the PC or something. Will it only save five listings (seems to be the magic number) without saving the list?

Please help.

Make sure you have the latest version of the PVR. Old versions would not automatically save the schedule when being forced to quit (like when you shut down Windows).

I'm using the latest one (2.4f package off the site). Another thing it always does is if there are weekday shows setup (set to record M-F), it just populates hundreds of entries for a single one which eats CPU all day long. That PVR, albeit it works well for the most part, is laden with bugs. One could delete off all the bogus entries, but since the proggie doesn't allow one to choose more than one file at a time to delete, then you have to go line by line to kill those strange entries and there are HUNDREDS of them. What a mess.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? If I manually enter things or use the titantv interactive guide, same result. I've been experiencing this for two+ years through multiple revisions.

I have never seen the PVR generate lots of false entries, but I don't record one show from Monday to Friday. Very infrequently, I have seen my PVR entries messed up other ways and the solution seems to be to delete all the .pvr files in the Program files/R5000 directory, when the PVR application is not running. A new clean default.pvr will get made when the PVR application is next run.
Also after adding programs to be recorded I exit the PVR application and restart it. This causes all of the new recording info to be saved.

I've seen the hundreds-of-entries issue in the PVR occasionally and for a long time, and I continue to see it, though much less often nowadays. I haven't pursued the issue with Nextcom because I've never been able to reproduce it on demand.

Exiting from the PVR and restarting it generally clears up the issue, so I've never had to delete all the extra entries by hand. But it's still inconvenient because it sometimes cripples the PVR and prevents scheduled recordings if it happens at a time when I'm not around and don't notice.

I want to emphasize that this is an infrequent problem with what is on the whole an outstanding product.

I also have never been able to replicate it on demand (the PVR duplicate entries), therefore I've never raised it as a "concern."

Nonetheless, I have pasted Ron's statement above for despite the nuances that every program has, the r5000 has been a fantastic product and has satisfied my requirements to better than a 99% solution. I purchased a pre-modded box from Nextcom directly and for the better part of two plus years, it has never been powered off but maybe four times and it just flat out works every single time. Very simple, easy to use interface, reliable, and uses about 3% of system resources to do its magic.

I've had it happen a couple times. I just exit the program, blow away the default.pvr file if there is one, and restart. I might have to re-enter a few lost items but as it's obvious when it happens, I've never had a recording fail to go off when scheduled.

Actually, what's more annoying to me is when it deletes queued recordings after you "clear old items" and then sort by clicking on a column head.

Curtvm,

Thank you very much for the advice - it worked!

Best regards,
Kevin

No, there is no PowerDVD for the Mac.

I have a PC server on my network with SageTV/r5000hd.

SageTV cannot playback the h264 files, but PowerDVD on the PC can.

When I copy the files to my Mac, I can't play them back with any of my Mac software (such as Quicktime or VLC). So I was wondering if anyone knew of Mac software that was capable of playing back the h264 files produced by the r5000hd on the PC.

I am leasing my ViP622 from Dish. Do you guys think it makes sense to do R5000-HD mod on a leased unit?

Does everyone who has bought R5000-HD product own their set-top boxes?

MKANET

I could be wrong, but I think when you lease something. You are responsible to returning it in the condition you got it. So, if you mod it while using it and unmod it when you return it, you're fine. This might not be the best example... but its sort of like leasing an apartment. In my last apartment, I had cut holes into the sheetrock and made other modifications; I also painted the place; but before I left, I put it back the way I got it.

It would probably be best for you to ask that question directly to Nextcom. However, I have leased cable box, with the R5000 modification. When I ever plan to return the cable box to my cable company, I'll simply send the STB to Nextcom so that they can remove the R5000 board. They have made no holes to the STB, so once the board is removed, there will be no external evidence that it was ever modified.

Realease versions 2.5d DVR and 2.4e PVR have been posted in the download area of the support (http://www.nextcomwireless.com/r5000/support.htm) page. They are recommended for all users.

In addition to the features/fixes addressed in the version 2.5b beta, the latest release of the DVR has some important fixes to address high-density cable streams. Channel mappings for certain FIOS systems have also been integrated.

The PVR addresses unique (user/setup dependent) issues by switching back to a static MFC library.

I am curious if there's a way to get the 2.5 DVR app to quietly load into the Windows system tray upon windows startup. Currently, I have to load the DVR app upon startup of windows, then hit the X button on the top right to hide the user interface.

I just switched to the 2.5d version of the DVR executable. Will report back...

Thanks for all your work!

I had a feeling this bug wasn't fixed since version 2.5b.

But if you're watching a show and there's a scheduled recording which will interrupt what youre watching.. it will NOT change the channel sometimes. It looks like it its trying to.. the screen goes back for 3 seconds or so, the OSD for the PVR app I'm using (sageTV) shows that its a new program that just started recording... but the channel is still the old one that I was watching. Its a shame, because I really like the channel changing speed.

How can we get this fixed?? I already reported this to R5000 support for version 2.4d, but my email was completely ignored.

PS: This problem doesnt happen with version 2.4 at all. Also, I can't reproduce it when manually changing channels. It's something related to... watching a show... and having SageTV change the channel automatically to record a scheduled program. This seems to happen... sometimes.

Hey Balazer, long time no speak! No I dont start it "that" frequently.. But, it's my humble opinion an app like this should have a feature like that. If I had all the apps that sit in my system tray popup in front of me when I first boot, my screen would be a mess. Anyway, this should be an easy feature to add. What might be harder to fix is the bug mentoined above :(

When upgrading the R5000 PVR to 2.5d, I suggest deleting the default.pvr file in your r5000 program folder. (you will also need to re-create your recording schedule)

Before I deleted the file, after upgrading, the PVR would crash each time it was launched, and crashed even after downgrading to 2.4f.

MKANET
05-14-07, 10:28 PM
Do I need to recreate my recording schedule in SageTV?? I dont use the scheduler thats comes for free.

I'm not experiencing any crashing. It just that if I'm watching/recording a show and SageTV tries to change it to another show, sometimes it will not change the channel. Its very annoying... and doesnt happen in version 2.4. It would be great if R5000 support would work with me to debug this problem. I can reproduce this problem relatively easily.

If you're in the Guide and watching a show thats being recorded in a preview window, then highlight another program in the Guide and press REC... sageTV will prompt you with a warning message that the channel that youre watching will change to what's recorded. If you allow it to change, it will lock up sageTV hard. This is 100% reproducable. I'm not sure if this is related to the other problem I just reported.

PS: I did delete my profile and make a new one.

PPS: Just to be clear... this problem ONLY happens when switching from channel to channel WHILE RECORDING. This does not happen when hitting play to change the channels.

Version 2.5d is unusable for me. Already 3 of my recordings were ruined because of it. Switching back to 2.4 fixes the channel changing problem instantly. Disabling fastmuxing in sageTV doesnt help.

How do I get the R5000-HD DVR app to quietly load in the windows system tray when Windows starts? I've been manually hitting the X to close the interface every single time.

I don't know. But, oddly enough, on my system it does automatically minimize to the system tray after starting. So it must be possible.

The MyHD does a great job in decoding R5000 recordings. The current model is MDP130. If you want to find something used and save some money, like perhaps looking at the AVS Marketplace Forum or Ebay, you can get a cheap MDP100 or MDP120. For decoding they all work equally as well. The differences primarily are in the cards capturing abilities, which has no impact with regard to decoding R5000 recordings.

I haven't used the R5000 yet, but from my experience in general you're better off getting MCE even if you have no plans on using the MC. The reason being that certain things like firewire video capture of channel changing are much more difficult to setup without MCE. Although it can be done, but you'll need hacked files.

True unless you also want to turn on live preview of HD channels while you're recording - then you need something more powerful. Live preview of SD channels while recording doesn't require much additional hp though.

Unbelievable... I ordered my second modded STB overnight at $80 + the additional fee for multinstance support; which arrived today. Currently, they didnt even bother sending me the serial # for my software license via email. I've sent them multiple emails starting as early as late afternoon PST asking for my serial #... no replies back.

The first STB I had modded was returned to me with a critical missing part (switchbox in back of cablebox). I was trying to figure out why On Demand wasn't working for me anymore. I had to email them about this, and they mentioned that they forgot put it back LOL!

Im planning on getting a brand new HP Vista based PC for my dual R5000 setup. Do I just need to modify the inf file as mentioned below?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Windows Vista
FYI- Vista and R5000-HD -

I just installed Windows Vista (Ultimate- from Microsoft Technet Plus subscription) on the laptop I use with the R5000-HD. I had trouble installing the drivers, it would find the drivers, but then give an error that said "the system cannot find the file specified." After a little while of trying various things, I looked into the driver inf file and decided to change the following lines from-

[SourceDisksNames]
1=%R5000HD_INSTALL%,,,\Program Files\r5000hd\drivers

to-

[SourceDisksNames]
1=c:\Program Files\r5000hd\drivers

then tried to install the drivers again, it worked. (At least the inf file was somewhat readable, as most others are a great big mess of sections and string substitutions- which when reading will usually get me very confused).

I'm sure I'm not the first one to install Vista with the R5000-HD, but couldn't find an answer anywhere, so I post here in case someone else runs into this. (And now I will probably be pointed to a post 2 pages back that already had the answer, oh well).

The other thing I ran into, is the recorder did not want to record to the default location- C:\ , but would record to the user's folder ok. I'm sure its some kind of permission thing, but didn't spend any time troubleshooting.

Rick,
PS3 can't play these files(StarzHD, MaxHD from R5000 mod). I tried even demux/remux to m2ts and mp4 containers without success. I think the problem is the PS3 does not play high profile h264 and these files are also interlaced.

RTK

05-30-07, 11:57 PM
Rick,

I had good luck with Nero Recode (for h264 ts files) rencoding these files to mp4 (use Nero Digital AVC, HDTV AVC, make sure the final size is less than 4GB, deinterlace, resize to 1920x1080, downsample sound to stereo and LC, encoder set to high quality, 2passes) and you'll get an excellent quality encode very hard to differentiates from original provided that you'll be willing to go through the reencode process. These files stream from the pc and play without problems on the PS3.

Mike,
Glad you finally got a reply. I wish they participated more here as all would take is for them to check the forum a few times a week.

Out of curiosity, what are people doing for h.264 editing/playback? While I think the next generation of stand alone HD media players released at CES next year should give us the support we need, right now things seem pretty limited. I've used both a MyHD card and a Dlink DSM510 for HBO and Showtime which works well. I'm not too thrilled with software h.264 decoding. I guess it might be better with one of the new ATI or Nvidia video cards but I'd still rather have a hardware decoder.

RTK

has123,
thanks again. At this point, I really don't want to do any re-encoding and would like to find a solution that plays the files as is. would the PS3 playback an R5000 h.264 HD file if it was less than 4GB? Is there some reason for the 4GB limitation and does anyone (besides me) want this to be addressed in a future firmware update?

has123
05-31-07, 12:07 AM
Rick,

No the PS3 will not play these files regardless of the size. I think these files are encoded with a high profile h264 and I am not sure if interlacing contributes to this problem. Sure the ps3 has the horsepower to do this (plays BD and m2ts files) so I hope an update will take care of this.

Not exactly... Dish uses Main profile, level 4.0 (check your remuxer log file) for their H.264 HD encoding. High profile is not needed. IIRC BD requires high profile support for BD playback. BD files are m2ts with an ieee1394 "source packet" header of 4 bytes. So the PS3 has the MIPS and the correct profile to playback H.264 streams recorded by the R5000-HD.

The question is whether the ps3 understands plain m2ts or what is "correct format" of a h.264 file on the ps3.

You can customize the TitanTV guide. For example, while the TitanTV guide does not currently show CinemaxHD, it does show standard definition Cinemax which usually (always?) has the same programming. In my guide, I replaced channel number 310 (Max) with 9458 (MaxHD). The TitanTV guide says Max but tunes to MaxHD for R5000 recordings. The downside is that the guide doesn't specifiy which programming is in HD but it really hasn't been a problem.

I don't record much from the Zoom channels so I can't comment too much on that issue.

Exactly where do I edit in 310 for 9458 to cause TitanTV to parse 9458 into the R5000 PVR App?

As for Voom, it has some excellent HD - 5.1 concerts on RAVE and a few nice nuggets elsewhere.

there should be a "customize" button on your titantv page. I deleted all the channels except those I record. are you actually scrolling thru all the SD channels? I guess if you are recording SD channels I'd understand but my TitanTV epg has about 10 channels. once in the customize page, you can go to max 310 and change the channel number to whatever you want. From memory its 9458 but I'm not in front of the TV. Then click save.

Yes, balazer is right, his method works.

And the HD icon and data reference is there as well, unlike remapping channel 310, which also worked.

However, remapping worked just without the HD icon and data.

Why TTV has the data but does not offer it up in a full Dish list is beyond me.

I have several Dish 211's modified with R5000 and I have all the Dish 211's PREFERENCES >> INACTIVITY OPTION defeated so that the recievers should never power down or go into standby.

If they do, an R5000 Scheduled Event wil fail and a 0 byte recording will result.

Nonetheless, even with the Dish 211's INACTIVITY OPTION defeated, my 211's still power down or go into standby requiring the SELECT or POWER button to be pressed to "Wake" them up.

I can keep them awake for 10 hrs. to 3 dyas but they all power down or go into standby.

Dish tells me that the latest FW code will, sooner or later, force a standby so that the EPG Download can take place.

For example, if you go away on a 2-week vacation and schedule various R5000 events, it appears to me from my experience that you probably will not have all your scheduled recordings succeed.

Has anybody had this problem, and, moreover does anyone have a solution?

A new release is available from the downloads area of the support page. (http://www.nextcomwireless.com/r5000/support.htm) Addresses incorrect stream type indications (MPEG-2, 0x0). If a stream fails to be properly identified it is assumed to be MPEG-2 but will logged and notated as 'stream parsing failed'.

Other areas addressed are increased wait time for STB power up (reports of longer than normal power up from some 211 boxes). Stream restarts for PVR events are handled differently; the event cycle is completely re-initiated including power up and channel entry. Fixes incorrect path on PVR restart.

Hi everyone,

I want to get premium HD channels using the R5000 and I want to know which service will be best for me. I use SageTV for my frontend.

Currently I am running Comcast in Los Altos CA. (SF bay area) I have 2 PVR150s for SD and a HDhomerun that only gets local QAM HD channels free and clear (some SD digital but none are worth watching). I really want as much HD content as I can get because all my TVs are huge HD displays with 5.1 surround.

Should I go:
Dish: Seems to have the most content right now. Should I worry about h264 in Sage?

DirectTV: There are a lot of boxes that can take the r5000. Are there any h264 boxes yet? I couldn't find good info on this

Comcast Cable: If I did this all I would really get is HD Discovery, ESPN and some movies channels that I may or may not subscribe to. This looks like the easiest way and I would be willing to go this route as long as they are going to offer more HD channels. It seems Comcast is too focused on PPV and ONDemand.

Programs I watch are on:
Networks
History Channel
Discovery Channel
National Geograhic (would love to get this but is not offered by comcast)
Food Network
HGTV
ESPN
MTV
PBS

I would watch movies on TV but in SD it looks like crap so I don't bother.

Sage will play Dish H.264 HD if you have a fast enough PC, supported video card and the cyberlink h.264 codecs installed. You have to edit your sage properties file to point to the cyberlink codec along with a few other changes, but those details are on the sage tv forum somewhere....

There were some posts on the sage forum that stated that h264 was a problem. I'm pretty sure that is resolved now. I use a athlon 3200+ with an ATI HD2400pro and I don't have any problems playing h264 content at the moment.

I'm leaning towards Dish because they offer more HD

In my experience, the r-5000hd has no problems with h.264 encoded HD.

SageTV has a problem with some (not all) h.264 encoded streams from Dish due, I believe, to the PAFF interlacing of these programs. The files are captured fine from the r-5000hd and play well using a variety of other players.

Would be nice if some genius figured a way to integrate the r-5000hd into Windows MCE as well as it is into SageTV.

Actually, I'm sure I can resolve any playback issues. I'm more interested in which service I should go with and how do I secure the boxes for the service. From my research it appears that DirectTV will have the most HD content launching in Q3 of 2007, however, Nextcom does not have a r5000 mod for their h264 boxes. Is this correct? Will Dish or Comcast come out with the channels I want quickly as well? That is my main question. If I could get all the channels I watch on a regular basis in HD I would be one happy nerd.

The Mpeg4 boxes from DirecTV are not available modded. DirecTV has switched to a "lease" program on their boxes, so there has been resistance to modifying them.

I just switched from DirecTV to Dish because of this issue. I use SageTV and want a solution that integrates all the new Mpeg4 HD channels. I went with Dish over cable because they have the most HD channels (by far) right now.

I posted the same question over at Sage and they recomend that I go with cable to avoid any issues. This is the easiest way because I don't need to mount a dish and deal with h264 issues. Apparently my cable system is due for an upgrade this year and new HD channels should be coming with it. Cable has so much more bandwidth than Satelite that I feel confident that in the next year I will get my channels I want, and I will be buying something that will last me 3 years at least. It is also a plus that they are required by law to turn on third party cable boxes.

Dish just recently lower the resolution of HBO, Showtime HD channels and greatly lower the bit rate, so they don't look very good on a 1080P TV. If you have a 720P TV then you will only notice the blocks on fast moving scenes and dissolves, very sad. Dish does seem to have the most HD channels, but you need to determine if they might be of interest.

Cable if it is a fairly modern system has much more bandwidth for programming, and if they finally drop the analog channels they will increase their bandwidth for digital by about 3 times. Comcast here does not change any of the bandwidth or resolution or bit rate of their HD channels so they look as good as the original source. BUT it is more complicated to find out if you can get a R5000 mod to work with cable. R5000 will only modify the SD cable box that does not have a firewire connector. You will need to determine if the SD cable will TUNE the HD channels before you have it modded. The only way to find out is to get cable service, subscribe to all the HD channels and then get a SD box and see if it will tune to the HD channels, and that you get audio from the HD channels, you will not get video because it is HD. If you do get audio, then that means "for now" you can probably have the SD box modified for the R5000. But the cable could change their channel mapping and your SD box might stop getting the HD channels, this happened to me.

I now can only use my R5000 on my old C-Band big dish.

But if you try cable you might want to get one of the HD boxes with the firewire connector, hook the firewire signal to you computer and install the software from this thread- http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=403695
You may be surprized what you can record, don't forget to check out the HD video on demand channels. Might save the cost of the R5000.

Thought I would report my experience with getting SageTV to successfully play back mpeg4 files recorded from a modded Dish VIP211 box. I owe a debt of gratitude to other posters on this forum and elsewhere for getting this to work.

I have a media server network with 2 PC's setup to playback SageTV files and a third PC which serves simply as the server. I made the following changes to them:

Livingroom PC:
Got a new 3.3ghz Intel (single core) eMachine PC (heck of a deal from Tigerdirect for $230) with Vista Home Basic. 1 gig of memory and then bought and installed an nVidia 7600GS video card. Installed PowerDVD Ultimate on this machine. Plays back mpeg2 and mpeg4 files great.

Home Theater PC:
This is an older, Dell 9100 PC with a 3.0ghz Pentium 4 processor. with XP Home edition. 2 gig of memory. I had an nVidia 6600GT card, which worked great playing back mpeg2 HD files, but could not handle the mpeg4 files when playing back with SageTV. Worked fine when playing back with PowerDVD Ultimate. I upgraded to an nVidia 8600GT card and problem solved - playback within SageTV works great.

Upgrade Specials for older Modifications
For a limited time older R5000-HD modified receivers can be traded in or upgraded into a new unit at significant savings over purchasing a new modification.

Trade-in your old modified unit and get $250 off a new modification or towards the purchase of a new pre-modified Dish Vip 211 receiver. Your old hardware becomes the property of Nextcom, LLC.

Swap/Upgrade to a new modification and get $150 off the price of the mod or new pre-modified Vip 211. Your old hardware is returned to you.

For complete details and for a list of how the various receivers qualify please visit our website (http://www.nextcomwireless.com/r5000/specials.htm)

News about the new Dish Vip 222 Receiver
A modification for the new dual tuner receiver from Dish Network (model Vip 222) will NOT be forthcoming. The internal design of this unit is a departure from the Vip 211/622 platform, making a capture modification impossible. Although not really offering anything new or different in terms of features and functionality, Dish has chosen to use the Conexant chipset vs. Broadcom for this model.

So, what are any of you going to do when zap2it goes away on 9-1? I realize that there is some talk of zap2it going subscriber fee-driven; I doubt it. TitanTV? Sage? And R5000 developers, now that you have our money, what are you doing? I hope that you are at least in conversation with someone to provide us a substitute for zap2it since you marketed your product with the promise of zap2it support. I hope that you are at least in communication with Schedules Direct to see if we might get some kind of interface with them.

I'm not in the know, but it wouldn't surprise me if Nextcom had already paid licensing fees, which would entitle us to continued use. I think it's only the freeloaders they're shutting down.

I am not in the know, either. I am simply a lurker on many, many forums because of my passionate interest in all things HTPC. Zap2It and Next.com may have just such a commercial contract. However, never in the registration process or since then have I indicated to Zap2It that I have a Next.com product. Commercial uses of Zap2It by those who are not licensed is one of the issues Zap2It contends with. I have not seen anything about it nor have been informed about any kind of licensing from Next.com's side. I realize that Next.com tends to keep things to themselves. I asked my question in such a way to specifically call them out to see if they would like to offer anything in the conversation. I will email them as well. However, then I will have a personal answer; I would rather have Next.com respond publicly so that any who want the information can have it.

Did you try the rogue driver removal procedure? How about your USB setup? Are you using a PCI USB card? When I did a new install of XP on my computer, I had to take out the PCI, do the complete XP install, then add the PCI card afterwards. Good luck.

Noob warning....

I have just hooked up two modified Dish ViP211 receivers via USB to my Sage Server. I down loaded the Nextcom HD DVR software w/SageTV compatibility. I edited my sagetv.properties file and added the modifications I found on the nextcome installation page. SageTV sees both receivers and I can even setup different channel mappings and see both. With my first client I can watch TV and channel surf without problem. While the first SageTV Client is watching a channel the second SageTV client can only watch the same channel. If I choose a different channel on the 2nd client I get the error that no encoder is available even though I am seeing the channel mapping for the second encoder when I go to program guide. I think it is just a setting in the sagetv.properties but I don't know where to begin.

Can anyone give me a direction to go in?

We get a lot of inquiries about the new DirecTV MPEG-4 receivers. After complete testing with the model H20 receiver it has been determined that a capture modification will NOT be possible. This includes both MEPG-2 and H.264 channels. Note: the model H10 is similar in design and function and cannot be modified either.

We still don't believe that the MPEG-2 channels will be disappearing anytime soon. After all its been close to 2 years since the initial reports of the MPEG-4 change-overs have been announced and a lot of us have only just started receiving H.264 locals. At some point DirecTV will get around to announcing some new national HD content and it will most likely be broadcast in MPEG-4 format. However, switching the existing core MPEG-2 HD line-up over to MPEG-4 cannot happen until a huge number of installed MPEG-2 receivers are swapped out. This will most likely will take a number of years and those of you using a R5000-HD modified DirecTV unit will continue to enjoy their recording capabilities.

In the mean time for those of you are interested in getting the most HD content from satellite, our Dish Network solutions provide full capture capability (all MEPG-2 and MPEG-4 channels). Furthermore, Dish Network holds a significant lead in the number and quality of HD offerings.

Ok, I'm not sure I'm understanding exactly how the R5000 works or what it does. Frankly I'm getting a headache trying to figure it all out. I thought maybe if I explain to all you smart folks on here exactly what I want to accomplish, maybe you can tell me if this is the product I need.

Tivo is great, but it doesn't work well with the DirectTV box and I can find no way to record in HD. The DirectTV HD DVR is ridiculously crippled - none of networking features you can get with Tivo are available. So I want to switch to a HTPC solution. Here is what I think I want equipment wise:

Two Hughes E86 modified STB's so that I can record two channels at once.
A OMF-BX100 (http://www.okoromedia.com/model.asp?model=BX100#pcf) HTPC running SageTV. This device uses a NVIDIA 8500 GT w/256MB with HDCP Output to push video to a TV.

The SageTV placeshifter device so I can watch my recorded shows when I'm away from home.

What I want to accomplish is to watch all my DirecTV channels, HD or SD, on my widescreen plasma in their original quality & aspect ratio. I want to be able to pause live TV, rewind live TV, record individual shows or a whole seasons worth in whatever def they are broadcast in. Basically, I want a Tivo .

Will the hardware I've outlined achieve this? I can't believe it is this hard!

Thanks in advance for your help.

AegisSailor, I do exactly what you want to do, even more, but with Comcast Cable. You can do that too with Dish. You cannot do it with DirectTV. Sorry. No go. Direct's hardware doesn't enable you to do what you want. You can complain to DirecTV about it, but it won't change anything.

If you want to record things in their original pure digital form, you need to go to Sage TV with Dish or Cable. DirectTV won't work. It's not an issue of effort.

Hollywood and DRM are the likely source of this problem. You can blame them for the answer, but it is the answer.

Thanks,
Mike

I am getting good results using an ATI HD2600PRO AGP (Saphire brand) video card in a 3.4 GHz Pentium 4 XP machine. This card has a graphics processor that is designed to decode H.264 HD video. At this time it requires PowerDVD Ultra software to get the video card's acceleration to turn on. The card has DVI and VGA outputs but I an using the component output running at 1080i connect to my 55 inch Mits. TV. The picture quality is the same as the MPEG2 channels from the MYHD card. The CPU loading is running about 45% but the 2600's graphic processor load often gets to 97%. With the moderate CPU loading a slower computer should work as well. Based on the GPU load I would not recommend the slower HD2400 cards but the 2600PRO seems adaquate and the faster 2600XT would work well also.

I would say an ATI HD2600. You have to use PowerDVD Ultra with it. I think I have an 8x AGP slot so not sure about your 4x. The other thing to check is the max AGP aperture you can select in your BIOS. Don't get a card with a larger one.

Your best bet is core 2 duo processor. I have a core duo and the cpu maxes out with these files. Also for playback the latest FFDShow and Haali splitter will do (both are free). Other options include CoreAVC with media player classic, Nero Showtime, and power dvd ultra.

Would be nice if some genius figured a way to integrate the r-5000hd into Windows MCE as well as it is into SageTV.

I know this was an old post, but it relates to what I am looking for.

We have been using Microsoft's Media Center for years and now have 6 Media Center PCs with 5 as clients (all sharing Recorded TV).

Currently we are capturing all video through s-video, but I want to (finally) move up to HD content.

To my surprise, reading through these pages and pages of postings, I couldn't find anyone using Media Center with an R5000HD modified STB.

Are any of you using the Media Center addin FireSTB? It is available free, and has been for a few years (since mid 2005) and it supports the R5000HD (USB). Release Candidate 1 is also available for Vista and it apparently works, but requires turning UAC off and Live TV doesn't work. Here is a blog entry that discusses it: http://www.cyacene.com/wordpress/?p=72 Unfortunately at this point it looks like further development for Vista has stopped.

The official readme file can be found here:
http://home.comcast.net/~timmmoore/firewire/readme.htm

FireSTB can be downloaded from here:
http://home.comcast.net/~timmmoore/wsb/html/view.cgi-showresources.html-TopRes-STB-20Firewire.html

What I would like to know is how well it works and how tolerant Media Center (especially Vista Home Premium) is at handling the occasional glitch in the mpeg-2 stream.

Are any of you using FireSTB and MCE2005 or Vista Home Premium?

There is also a developer planning to write a custom "virtual tuner driver" for Media Center. It will work by installing a TV Tuner driver that interfaces with the USB port instead of interfacing with specific tuner card. The developer's web site is located here http://dvbsbridge.com/ (note that they don't have any information on this R5000HD driver on-line yet; but if there is interest their e-mail address is on their web site). The driver is not available yet and you know how these things go (tending to more often just go away instead of becoming a reality). At the same time when you consider the millions of copies of Vista Home Premium out there, if this was developed I would imagine the demand for R5000HD systems could potentially sky rocket.

The other concern I have is the switch to mpeg-4. We are up in Canada and there are currently no mpeg-4 STBs available from ExpressVu. Our ExpressVu 6000 could be modified for the R5000HD, but I'm concerned that ExpressVu will be switching to mpeg-4 very soon (according to leaked information they plan to switch over all HD content to mpeg-4 in less than 2 years, starting in the next month or two). Due to both potential support issues with Media Center and the uncertain future of when mpeg-4 becomes a reality, I don't know what the best move on my part is right now. We would much prefer to stick with Media Center, especially considering purchasing 6 licenses for Sage TV combined with the R5000HD (and then the potential move to mpeg-4 in the near future) would add up the $$$ very quickly.

How many people with (1) or more R5000-HD Modified Dish 211 recievers reliably use SageTV for all their event scheduling?

If so, what is your prefered method of playback of R5000-HD Modified Dish 211 captured MPEG4 H.264 files?

I do all the time. The scheduling works flawlessly. Actually I have two modded boxes (an old DTC100 I use to record OAR stuff) and works great.

Playback thru Sage is an issue, however. Sometimes it works flawlessly and sometimes it doesn't (studder, etc.). Does not appear to be a CPU issue as I am using graphic card acceleration and cpu usage is low.

For reliable playback, I use PowerDVD.

I do have PowerDVD Ultra. Sorry I did not specify that. This version gives you the h.264 codec. There are other codecs out there, but this is the one I use.

The differences here may be related to how your cards are outputting the signal and how the display is set up to show them - i.e. as video level digital signals vs. PC level digital signals. If there is a setting in the projector/display for "enhanced" video levels, try that. If a display expects video level and you feed it PC level, it may appear washed out. Adjusting the contrast and brightness can correct to an extent, but the display should be set for the signal type if such a setting exists.

Over the last few weeks I've been having an increasing problem with r5000hd recordings having about 1-2 seconds of the last channel viewed at the beginning of a new recording. This seems to have started since I upgraded the r5000hd software to the lastest version.
Has anyone else experienced this? I want to say I recall hearing about someone having this problem a long time back, but I can't find the post in this now huge thread.

I have fast stream and file switching disabled in sage. This is an annoyance with SD->HD mpeg2 and a real problem with H.264->mpeg2 channel changes. The 2 seconds of H.264 at the beginning of a valid mpeg2 stream make the whole file useless. Note also that this occurs primarily with changing OTA channels.

What is the status of getting the new D* HD channels using r5000hd? They have supposedly launched a bunch of new ones, with more to come.

I assume the answer is "Can't get them, using the old hardware :(", but I just wanted to verify. (And, of course, the new receivers cannot be modded.)

My r5000hd DTC-100 receiver has been in storage for few months. I'll be moving into a new place soon. I am wondering if I should set up my D* equipment, or if it is time to switch to E* with a vip211.

Any comments?

Looking at a move to DishTV as well due to this. I'm still in contract because of an HR20 or I would have already switched. My current solution for mpeg-4 is an hr20 with 2TBs of esata but that's a solution living on borrowed time since the hr20 or the drives will fail eventually. Without trying to start a D* vs E* war, is there any reason to stick with D* for R5000 users?

Which boxes are best? Leaning towards the 622 for the family room TiVO and a 2xx for the R5000. Is there any advantage to the 622? Does the 2xx tune OTA since I don't think E* carries my locals?

Looking for positive/negative feedback from those that have used the R5000 with both services.

Thanks,
Mark

I have a Dish 622 with my main home theater gear and a modded Dish 211 with the computers. I personally chose not to mod a 622 because I was afraid of the potential scheduling conflicts between the 622's internal timers and the R5000 scheduled recordings. Seems to me that there would be way too many opportunities for those to conflict. I made the point in our local thread recently that I wouldn't be switching to D* any time soon because of the R5000 limitation in recording the new MPEG4 channels.

Mark,

For OTA, you can install a tuner card into your computer. I think there are some OTA tuners that plug into USB ports, too.

So, I wouldn't worry too much about OTA support in the satellite box (at least for recording).

The 211 has an OTA tuner and the R5000HD mod can record from it, just like it does with any other supported Dish HD receiver.

In addition to HDTV tuners on PCI cards and USB dongles, there is a two-tuner box that has an Ethernet connection which is supported under MythTV.

Actually, I see it supports lots of things besides just MythTV.

I have a Dish 622 with an R5000 and while it does work, the potential for scheduling conflicts is a real issue. If you have more than one display in your home, I would suggest adding the R5000 to a 211. Unfortunately the bigger issue currently is that the actual picture quality of most Dish HD channels isn't what it used to be. Once you start viewing HD-DVD and Blu-ray material, saving DishHD recordings isn't as appealing as it once was. Also, don't overlook the reality that Dish now allows you to add as much USB hard drive space as you want for 39.99. I'm glad I have an R5000 mod in my receiver but its use has dropped off considerably given the above.

You know, I forgot all about this tip and did not realize that when I installed the final release of 6.2 (10) that it copied over the mod to the registry. But this is the tip:

"Also for H.264 streams, increasing the NumBuffers from 40 to 80 (HEX) using RegEdit (Frey->Common->DSFilters->MpegDeMux) did the trick for me to get silky smooth HD playback of h.264 streams."

It has worked for me. Like I said. I had done this and it worked. Then I installed the latest version of SageTV and it reset the numbuffers to 40 an the stuttering returned.

I have an nVidia 8600GT with a P4 (3.0ghz) processor running XP. I did install the latest beta drivers, which offload the work to the GPU.

I think it's been mentioned before that using STB initiated timers rather than the PVR app is one way to make sure your STB wakes up for the recording.

I use Sage and it has not been an issue since one of the earlier updates (don't remember the number). Only issue is if the STB is shutting down to upload the channel guide. That is annoying.

Hi, sorry for the long post but I'm hoping you could clear some things up for me.

I have 2 R5000 modded 211s attached to an Athlon Xp 2500+ which I use for capture only. I'm using Sage 5.0 to schedule my captures.
For playback I am using an Athlon 64 4000+ with 2gb ram and an Nvidia 7600 (I forget if its GT or GS) PCI-E card (fanless).
I don't use Sage for playback, just Media Player Classic with CoreAVC.
This works great for most playback, but cpu utilization bounces around 85-95% whan playing 1080i h264 content and I get occasional stutter, which I find distracting enough to want to solve it.

I was planning to get an ATI 2400 or 2600 to replace the 7600, based on the favorable comments in this forum. I phoned ATI pre-sales support and spoke to a tech who said that with the latest Catalyst drivers I could enjoy the card's hardware acceleration of h264 even with the CoreAVC codec and MPC. I told him this contradicted everything I'd read so far, but he assured me it was true. (He said this was the case with 2400s, 2600s, 2900s, and even the 1900 series.) He also assured me that as for hw accelerated video playback, all the cards would perform identically (a 2400 as fast as a 2900, for example).

Up to this point I was under the impression that only the Cyberlink codec worked with ATI's hw acceleration. Can anyone answer conclusively whether this is now true, or if my tech was just ill-informed? And if the Cyberlink IS required, can I just use their codec (I think it's available for $15.00) or do I need the whole Ultra player as I've read in some posts? I've also read that Nero's player supports ATI's hardware, anyone know if that's true and if it plays R5000 files well?

Any help greatly appreciated!

(And as an aside since I've noticed a few people ask for a running tally of people's experiences with their R5000s, both mine have been working great for about 8 months or so, I'm very satisfied with them, and the 2500+ is enough horsepower to capture simultaneously from both with no hiccups.)

Cheers and thanks. :)

Has anyone successfully used a DVICO TVIX M4100 to playback back R5000 recordings scheudled by SageTV with full << >>, GoTo and 15 sec. Skip functionality?

Not exactly an answer to your question, but this may be helpful:

I'm using TViX M4000 to view HD movies captured from Starz & Showtime C-band with R5000 mod in a HDD-201. Satellite receiver is Motorola DSR-922. The TViX is such an outstanding solution for HD that I have abandoned thoughts of BluRay/HD and HTPC use. It _simply_ works.

The TViX seems to prefer transport stream format (*.ts files). The issues with special navigation are documented in other forums in regards to this player. However, I found that these issues usually are not present when used with the *.ts files that the R5000 outputs, using its supplied recording software.

I use VideoRedo to trim the R5000 capture. I have it save as a *.ts file, instead of MPEG. When saved using the default(MPEG), I found that the TViX did not find the audio. I also set the TS output rate to the same as the R5000, instead of "auto".

VideoRedo writes a new *.ts file and corrects errors in the original that it finds. To further fix errors (if you have transmission problems), MPEG2Repair is good to use, first. It fixes errors at the transport stream level and also saves a text log detailing what it finds.

To reduce file size saved on the TViX hard drive, the MPEG2Repair author has another program that does an excellent job of stripping NULL packets. This same utility allows splitting the *.ts for archiving on standard DVD's. Furthermore, the TViX plays most of the NULL stripped *.ts captures with full navigation. For those that exhibit a problem with special nav functions, the null packets can be restored with the utility, if having these special seek functions is really important for what you intend to watch. All of the NULL stripped files play straight through (and pause) without a problem. Almost all will perform the GoTo function accurately enough to be worthwhile.

The TViX works just as well with files input over USB from an external hard drive. I have not tried it with network connections. It is a pleasure to find a product that doesn't make you jump through endless hoops, just to watch an HD movie. :)

I have the 2600PRO and it works well with Cyberlink Ultra for 1080I h.264 playback. See my post above. I tried the Cyberlink codex and it would not work at all with my video card. I also tried Nero and Coreavc and got software decoding but no HW acceleration from the video card, so lots of frame drops. The 2900 cards do not have the hardware video decoders but I think can provide some HW acceleration with their fast processors.
Others have reported that the 2400's are not quite fast enough to handle some h.264 decoding cases.
Your Nvidia video card might provide acceleration with Cyberlink Ultra. So you should try that if you haven’t done so already.

The Nvidia 7600 gives you some benefit with the Cyberlink Ultra decoders, but it isn't anything like the 8500GT with real H.264 support. For comparison, I was able to find a socket 478 board with a 16x PCIe slot(rather surprised it exists actually). Right now I have that board running flawless H.264 playback with <50% cpu util on an old 2.8GHz P4 with 512MB ram just because of the 8500GT video card. That saved me tons of cash upgrading my last sage client to playback dish H.264 recordings

Thanks to all for the feedback so far.

I called ATI again and this time the tech said that only Nero and Cyberlink use the hw on their cards. But he also said that the whole 1xxx series of cards has h264 acceleration, where the first guy said that only the 1900's did. So I guess they just say whatever comes into their heads at the moment. etk29321, do you have the 256 or 512MB version of the 8500GT? I've found fanless solutions for each version, and may try that over an ATI solution just because I've had bad experiences with ATI in the past (and their techs seem somewhat dim). Do you know, does Nero also take advantage of Nvidia's HW acceleration on the 8500GT?

Thanks.

My 8500GT is just a 256MB card (MSI NX8500GT-MTD256EH -- fanless with HDMI and cheap to boot). Use the newest Nvidia drivers too since the ones that came out in sept were the 1st to add H.264 HD purevideo support for the 8500GT.

Oh, and don't believe them on the 'any 1xxx series' for ATI. I have an x1300 I'm not using because Cyberlink won't do any hardware acceleration for that card.

Is there anything special about the cable ?

Does it have to be restricted to a maximum length or anything like that ?

R5000-HD uses a 5-pin mini USB plug. Maximum length for USB is 16 feet or so, but there is risk of problems when you approach the limit. You're safe at 6 or 10 feet.

Yes. Just install TVersity on your pc and run the files through TSRemux ts option(takes few minutes and no re-encoding) and that is it.

Not working for me. I did this with a 1080i mpeg2 r5000 showtime recording but the video is still a bit jumpy at times. Playing via a wired network. Have you tested both mpeg2 and mpeg4 recordings? If so is you playback flawless? Also, if you could share your tversity settings it would be much appreciated. Maybe I don't have it configured properly...

Thanks

h264 files play perfect. mpeg files play with minor flicker once every few minutes but very watchable (to me) and significantly improved from previously. Both play with DD5.1 audio.
Question: did you remove null packets? mine are recorded without.

Thanks. That is what I am seeing as well on the mpeg2. Something else interesting is that when I play recordings streamed from my infrant nas using the built in upnp server, the video is perfect, but it has no audio (this is without running through tsremux). I will try to play a " tsremuxed" file with this method later as well...

You need to run it through TSRemux for the audio to play. I am loving the PS3 more and more....:)

It is getting a lot closer. I really think it will get there for a video. Great news about h.264 playback. Hopefully perfect hd mpeg2 playback won't be far away. I still can't beat the roku hd1000 for media playback across a network (but only mpeg2). Can't wait until they get this ironed out a bit more.

Though from the way things are going most broadcast will be in h264.

From my limited time playing with things the new PS3 update does allow playback of h.264 HD recordings from my Dish 622/R5000 if you run the files thru tsremux which is pretty quick. It will also playback standard mpeg2 1080i recordings if run thru tsremux so for now the PS3 seems to be a good option for a stand alone player for R5000 file playback.

For whatever reason, most of my mpeg2 1080i .ts recordings (if not run thru tsremux) cause the PS3 to lockup. Its entirely possible this relates to a setting I have enabled in VideoRedo so I'll need to try an unedited R5000 mpeg2 .ts recording and see if that plays back ok in the PS3.

Are the mpeg2 fairly error free when recorded to dvhs? Which Dish channels are still mpeg2?

I'm not using DVHS, all R5000 recordings are on the hard drive. Most have been run thru mpeg2repair and then edited with VideoRedo. My initial excitement about the PS3 being a viable option for R5000 file playback may have been premature. While the PS3 can now playback R5000 HD recordings, I am unable to pause, FF, or RW thru the h264 files with the exception of one. Since I haven't recorded an h.264 program in a while I'll have to do some more investigating but thats what I"ve found thus far.

After testing with multiple files from R5000HD moded Vip211 on HDD streamed to PS3 with TVersity, PS3 is hardwired to the network
1) h264 ts files playback is perfect. Trim files with h264ts cutter and run through TSremux. FF, pause, RW all work, no lock ups.
2) mpg ts playback is still broken but improved from previously. Occasional flickering and sometimes lock-ups (had to restart the ps3)
I think overall it is good news esp. that most HD broadcast through E* is h264.

prior to this latest update, all of my r5000 mpeg2 hd .ts files either played back without audio or gave the error msg, "corrupt data."

with the new ps3 update, nearly all the mpeg2 hd .ts file cause the PS3 to crash. if the files are run thru tsremux the playback fine with audio however I still get the occassional green flash. I don't think its a network bandwith issue however I will confirm. prior to this update, my PS3 had never locked up.

My experience exactly. I still get some green flashes and have locked up the PS3 on some files... Glad to hear about the h.264 playback. Hopefully there will be an update soon so that both h.264 playback and mpeg2 1080i playback will work on r5000 recordings without any further processing...

Can someone give me a complete list on how to process h.264 files from my dish 211 r5000 so that I can play them on the PS3.

Do you just take the file and process it through TSRemux and burn to DVD-R?
Do you save as *.ts, m2ts, or *.mpg?

TIA guys,

Kevin

Is it just me, or is anyone else having problems playing past the 2GB mark in any file with the new Playstation 3 firmware?

I tried three different H.264 captures from my R5000-HD. I ran the files through TSRemux, and served them up with both TVersity and Nero MediaHome:

File 1: 6GB, plays first 44 of 128 minutes
File 2: 2.6GB, plays first 38 of 48 minutes
File 3: 4.6GB, plays first 37 of 83 minutes

If you assume constant bit rate, the point where the file stops playing is almost exactly 2GB in each case. That can't be a coincidence. When I browse my media, the correct length of the program is shown, but when I start playing the file, if I bring up the info it shows the content being the same length as where it stops playing.

Just in the past few days, I all-of-a-sudden cant change the correct channels via SageTV (Comcast San Francisco Bay Area). Does anyone know anything about this? My R5000 hardware seems to be working right. Another member warned me about some kind of big change, but I didn't realize it would affect me to the point I can't use it in SageTV. Is this a Zap2It / Comcast blunder?

What ever Sage uses for guide data has probably not been updated with the channel changes of the last week, channels were added and channel numbers were changed for existing channels as well.

Thanks! I guess I'll just wait for it to start working again.. in the meantime... looks like I have to go watch TV on a normal setup.

I read a post somewhere reporting a similar finding so you are probably correct. The rev 2.0 firmware is buggy and I've pretty much stopped trying to use the PS3 as a media player until the next release.

Are you able to playback on other blueray drives.

The 2.01 firmware release fixed the 2GB playback problem. I was able to play my 6GB H.264 content (in an MPEG-2 TS container) all the way to the end.
