Daniel Dae Kim Relishes Complex Role on 'Lost'
The Subtleties Behind the Subtitles
By Amy Amatangelo Special to The Washington Post Sunday, May 22, 2005
Oh, the mysteries of ABC's hit series "Lost." Where are the doomed passengers of Oceanic Flight 815? How did they survive the plane crash? And why are they all so darn good-looking?
On an island full intriguing characters, Daniel Dae Kim's Jin Kwon has been almost as confounding as the show's cursed lottery numbers. Already one of the few Asian characters on prime-time television, Jin has not spoken a word of English all season. A risky decision, even for a show as smart as "Lost."
"I am so grateful to [executive producers] J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof for taking the chance on having a character who doesn't speak the language for an entire season," Kim, 36, said. "I think it's really doing a lot for what we deem acceptable on television and what we can expect the viewer to follow."
The idea to have characters who don't speak English occurred to the producers when Yunjin Kim (no relation), who plays Jin's wife Sun, auditioned for the role of Kate.
"She was phenomenal," Lindelof said. "It wasn't like she was wrong for Kate, but we thought: How interesting would it be to have a character who doesn't speak English? You would really have this opportunity to do something that doesn't really exist on network television."
So they cast Yunjin as Sun (the role of Kate went to Evangeline Lilly) and gave Sun a husband. Kim auditioned for the role -- and suddenly found himself relocating with his wife and two children to Hawaii, where the show films. As the season unfolded, Sun and Jin's heartbreaking back-story was revealed: A tale of two innocent young people passionately in love before Jin is corrupted by Sun's criminal father. Eventually, viewers discovered that Sun speaks English -- but Jin remains confined to subtitles.
This meant Kim, who was born in Busan, South Korea, but raised in New York and Pennsylvania, had to seriously brush up on his Korean. "It was one of the biggest challenges of my career," he said. "I wasn't fluent."
He relied on Yunjin and the show's translator to help him capture the cadence of the language. "For me, it wasn't so much that I wasn't pronouncing the word correctly, but the melody of the lines was different," he said. "So it was just a matter of trying to get the tonality of speech down."
Like many viewers, Kim was worried that Jin could be perceived as a cliched stoic and inscrutable Asian man.
"That was actually one of my biggest questions when I started," Kim said. "The character wasn't a sympathetic character by any means, so I was a little bit concerned that he might come off as one-dimensional or somewhat stereotypical -- and sure enough, after the pilot, I did receive some criticism for exactly that.
"There will always be a small minority of people who always want my character to be nothing but a hero who speaks fluent Korean and saves the day," Kim said. "I think there's much more value in a character that's complex and can really hold your interest for the long term."
Kim said he's aware that his role comes with a somewhat heavy burden.
"This is really the first opportunity I've had to play someone who is a Korean national, so I want to be as sensitive as possible with regard to representing that," he said.
"It's important that if I am in a position of visibility that I use that position to not only help myself and my career but [also to] continue to help the image of Asian portrayals in the media."
A recent study by the National Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium found that Asians make up 5 percent of the U.S. population and play 2.7 percent of the regular roles on TV.
Before landing the role on "Lost," Kim played an FBI agent on "24," a social worker on "ER," and a really evil lawyer on "Angel."
"Most of the roles that I've done have been written for non-Asian people, so it has been a conscious choice to try to expand the notion of what's acceptable for an Asian person to play," Kim said.
Kim grew up thinking he would become a doctor, like his father, or a lawyer. But once a friend at Haverford College asked him to be in a play, he was hooked. So he went to New York University and earned a master's degree in acting. During his summer hiatus, Kim will return to his theater roots and New York to star in the off-Broadway production of the Chekhov play "Ivanov," where he looks forward to performing before a live audience.
Being in New York also puts him closer to his parents. They love watching their son on TV every week, but Kim's mother has one small request.
"My mom can't stand to see me get hit on the show," Kim said. "She asks me to tell her whenever I'm going to be involved in violence. When I got killed off on 'Angel,' my mom literally couldn't sleep that night."
Kim couldn't offer many hints about what viewers can expect to see in Wednesday's two-hour finale or answer any questions about the puzzling hints the series has been dropping all season.
"The party line happens to be the truth: I really don't know," Kim said. "I have my own theories. That's how bad it is.
"I like to parallel the character's journey and the character doesn't know and the character is trying to sort it out, so I like to walk along with him," Kim said. "One thing that I do believe is that all the characters are on the island for a reason. I don't think it's a coincidence that they just happen to be there and survive."

what? are you serious? it was from ABC's website ... how is that a spoiler?
third party interviews and articles are in a completely separate category.
anyway, that's why we have a moderator for this thread. if he had thought what I posted was a spoiler he would have removed it ... and I *did* start off my post with "sorry if this is a spoiler" ... so you could have easily skipped over it just in case.
bronowyn 05-22-05, 01:14 AM Actually, I'm seeing a lot more of the idea of your (I don't think it's spoily) post... I was watching 20/20 on friday, and they had an EXTENDED commerical interspersed with an Alias commercial...
They are showing Danielle asking to hold the baby... They show Charlie going, I'll get her I'll find her... etc... They showed locke being DRAGGED... and looking very very scared...
And my favorite.. they show hurley looking at those flippin numbers. He looks like he's about to flip out. ;)
they also show other things that I have no clue about.
But that was a commercial this past friday. Anyone else see it?
J.Mike Ferrara 05-22-05, 03:59 PM To all you moderator 'wanna-bees':
I never once thought my post was a spolier - it's lifted right out of the WSJ. A spoiler would be describing detailed information information had I seen the actual episode. I have not, and how do we know that Damon didn't give false information anyway - I wouldn't be surprised! I guess we will all have to watch and find out!

I never once thought my post was a spolier - it's lifted right out of the WSJIf you had paid attention to this thread a while back, you'd know that this forum defines a spoiler as any facts (not rumors or speculation) that were not part of previously-aired episode or preview attached to an episode. By that definition, your post is, indeed, a spoiler. Your personal definition of spoiler does not change that fact.
I don't "wanna-bee" a moderator, but I do "want to be" allowed to read this thread without being told what will happen in future episodes. Please adhere to the forum guidelines and refrain from posting such facts without spoiler tags. Thank you.

Duly noted, and thanks for the heads up.
I have coded the text in white, since I can't find the control to make it a spolier with the new interface.
trbarry 05-22-05, 09:43 PM It looks to me like the old tags still work the same:
{spoiler} some spoiler text {/spoiler}
Just use square brackets instead of the curly braces shown.

(and I guess put the spoilers in that other thread that has probably died ;) )
petergaryr 05-23-05, 06:45 AM It's like a "Wet Paint" sign. Ya just have to try it.
CPanther95 05-23-05, 07:15 AM I can't find the post to quote, but somebody mentioned in the previews where Locke is being dragged and looked scared. I saw the preview, and it looked like Locke was being sucked down a hole in the ground and Jack was trying to hold on to his arms. Locke didn't look scared - he said, "Let me go, I'll be fine."
dmbatch 05-23-05, 08:23 AM There are 2 scenes with Locke. One he is being dragged across the ground feet first with a very scared look on his face. The other he is being sucked into the ground and he is telling Jack he is not scared.

Is he being dragged into the hatch?? Also, I saw a preview where it seems like hurley finally notices the number's on the hatch - that is gonna be fun to watch :)
OT: I am subscribed to this thread, but it no longer shows up under my CP - any thoughts on why that is?
CPanther95 05-23-05, 10:07 AM Not sure if the new forum software reset subscriptions, or not - will it let you re-subscribe?
The scene I saw didn't look like the hatch at all - looked like a hole in the ground, dirt all around.
I missed those commercials....now you all went and spoiled it for me
Same commercial, if not more, showed up on the Desperate H-Wives finale last night.
Something else I just noticed about this new software, when getting an email notification, spoilers in a post that are not visible, are in the email.

That was a problem we noticed when TiVoCommunity switched to this software. It seems there's no way around it.
You have to be really careful when getting notifications.
The problem is though there is nothing in the email to flag that it's a spoiler, it looks just like a regular post.
Something that might help is if the poster wrote SPOILER in the post a couple of lines before the spoiler bracketed message.
It's not like if life-threatening though... :p
mx6bfast 05-23-05, 03:14 PM Just click on the link and don't read the email. Personally I like the old way we got updates. But I'm just one person.
Anyways, I can't wait for the season finale! Count me as one of those who have watched LOST in addition to being a part of this monsterous thread since day 1. I didn't expect this thread to hit 6774 (mine). Amazing.
"On an island full intriguing characters, Daniel Dae Kim's Jin Kwon has been almost as confounding as the show's cursed lottery numbers. Already one of the few Asian characters on prime-time television, Jin has not spoken a word of English all season."
Yeah he did. He said "doctor" a couple of episodes ago! :)
CPanther95 05-23-05, 04:24 PM Didn't he say "OK" also. ;)
Xesdeeni 05-23-05, 05:04 PM And didn't he say "starboard" by using Sun's phonetics?
Xesdeeni
Didn't he say "OK" also. ;)
First English word I remember him saying was "BOAT!!!!!" to Michael after he found out Sun knew English.
Mr.Poindexter 05-23-05, 08:07 PM OK, three words in 23 episodes. I think that is close enough to "not speaking a word of English" for all but the most pedantic. Silent Bob speaks more than that!
Hey Poindexter, If the spoiler that J. Mike Ferrara posted turns out to be true, it looks like your super polar bear ripping the pilot out of the plane and throwing him up into a tree all while making loud mechanical noises theory will be blown out of the water :D.

OK, three words in 23 episodes.
That makes him tied with Wu on Deadwood.
aaronwt 05-23-05, 11:36 PM Too bad he couldn't be on 24 again this year.

It wasn't my theory as much as I was just saying that a polar bear could do that, so you cannot automatically assume there is something else running around like a T-Rex. Polar bears are just bad ass. I am still trying to imagine what it would look like to see an 18 ft tall bear.
Mr.Poindexter 05-24-05, 11:08 AM Boosting your post count by splitting the smilies into another post. How pathetic.
Mr.Poindexter 05-24-05, 11:09 AM ;)
Paul Bigelow 05-24-05, 12:45 PM So, are we going to find out what's in the hatch?
Maybe they could toss in a boar, just in case whatever is in there needs feeding.

Sorry, I know OT... but agreed with above, I keep looking for page counter on the bottom left of the screen rather than all the way on the right and partially cut off.
mollerup 05-24-05, 09:37 PM I've heard some talk, maybe in this forum, or maybe on another of the "guardian" being like the bear in Stephen King's book, "The Dark Tower." Jorge Garcia coming up on "The Tony Danza Show" this morning.
Mr.Poindexter 05-25-05, 11:28 AM Actually, there were 2 Voltron's. The lions was the coolest. I wish it was on tv again.
There were three Voltron's. The one I linked was Voltron I, made up of 15 vehicles - 5 land, 5 air and 5 sea. Each of the 3 groups could link together to make a super vehicle and all three groups could link together to form Voltron.
Voltron 2 was 3 robots - black, red and blue. The robots would stack torsos and their legs would snap together to make Voltron. This Voltron had 6 arms, so perhaps it was Voltron Vishnu? Voltron II was never aired in the USA.
http://www.toyarchive.com/STAForSale/NEW2001+/Voltron/Voltron2RedBoxed2a.jpg
Voltron 3 was 5 lions. They would form into Voltron III with the big fat black cat being the torso and head. Voltron III was the most successful of the Voltrons and was aired much longer in the USA. It really is the most known of the Voltron robots.
It is true, you really do learn something new everyday! :)

Shardik.
I was re-reading the Dark Tower as I started watching Lost, and and found the two oddly similiar.
FYI - Good Morning America will have a deleted scene from the 2 hour finale tomorrow morning. Evangeline was on GMA this morning (with laryngitis).
They showed a clip from tonight's show which has Jack, Locke, Kate, and Hurley getting ready to bring dynamite back to the hatch and they decide to split up in case something happens to one of the two groups...3 sticks each...so 6 stick total. I saw no sign of Artz. I'm thinking he's a goner.
NorthJersey 05-25-05, 02:50 PM for those who don't have a DVR and miss tonight's episode it looks like it'll be replayed Saturday night at 8 (hope I didn't need the spoiler tag for this!)
What's going to happen to this thread after LOST is over? :(

Four months of speculation on next season's developments, spiced up with the occasional Lost-babe (or BSG-babe if Optivity is still participating) photo, I'm guessing.
sayanythingrock 05-25-05, 03:42 PM i was reading over some slides for a class and it was on early philosphers, and guess who came up, Locke and Rousseau, 2 characters on Lost, anyone ever ponder that. i get the Locke reference but cant figure out Danielle's. In his Discourse on the Inequalities of Men (1754) and Social Contract (1762) (Jean-Jacques Rousseau) maintained that human beings were essentially good and equal in the state of nature but were corrupted by the introduction of property, agriculture, science, and commerce. People entered into a SOCIAL CONTRACT among themselves, establishing governments and educational systems to correct the inequalities brought about by the rise of civilization. mile (1762), a didactic novel, expounds Rousseau's theory that education is not the imparting of knowledge but the drawing out of what is already in the child. From the 1760s Rousseau was tormented by persecution mania, and he lived his later years in seclusion.
sayanythingrock 05-25-05, 03:51 PM there it is thanks check i was trying to connect the first part about humans being good but that last part really ties the whole character together
sayanythingrock 05-25-05, 03:52 PM are there any other historical references within the show, character wise?
I have read the last few pages of this monster thread, but has anyone commented on what happens if the raft is spotted by a boat? I think that it would be the end of Lost b/c they wouldn't be lost, therefore something will happen to the raft on tonight's episode and the survivors will stay lost.
Mr.Poindexter 05-25-05, 06:49 PM The raft gets discovered, they come to the island and rescue everybody and the actors find they are once again out of work. ;)

But the smoke, that was just wierd.
Why are some commercials completely surrounded by black, instead of just having black columns? Is an upconverted letterboxed image?
A lot of commercials are letterboxed for normal 4:3 TV. You've also got a small number of them actually filmed in HDTV. The former will always be letterboxed. The latter will be in a box if the TV station flips that switch during the commercials.
Every time I see a HDTV commerical it grabs my attention -- I don't know why they don't show more of them. The four I've seen have been a Cadillac one (for their sportier car going through a tunnel), an Ipod one of sillouhettes dancing on a color background, a Target one, and an American Express one (with what's her face from Eternal Sunshine of the Beautiful Mind). Given I've only seen those each once or twice tops, I have DVR abilities to skip over commercials, I can remember them, and what they were for, they've got an incredible amount of stickiness. Marketers really ought to be forcing HDTV commercials down our throats. Given it's the more affluent market that's likely to have HDTV, that ought to be even more reason to give us more of 'em.

There were several more HD commercials during the Super Bowl, like the one with the frozen guy in the Mustang.

Rakesh.S 05-25-05, 09:30 PM That american express kate winslet commercial was not HD today..what the hell
The same exact commercial was in HD during Desperate Housewives on Sunday.
So you'd be happy if they'd broadcast in HDTV just once a year?
My point is that advertisers would be getting a lot more bang for the buck if they started getting their commericals broadcast in HDTV. I'd even argue that the networks could charge more for a HDTV spot. It's a win-win for everyone.

wasting 05-25-05, 10:12 PM im pretty sure he was shot, but they are only 15miles off so they will be making it back to land and i expect micheal to think the hatch will lead to ther others and he will be the first one down there, thats if locke doesnt beat him

Random thoughts:
I thought Sawyer got shot, then fell in the water. I was pretty impressed with the episode, but agree not much was truly resolved; that should obviously make for lots of possibilities for next season. I think the guys in the boat were definitely the others, and that they wanted Walt more than Claire's baby. Noticed Charlie brought back a little souveneour (sp?) from the plane. Was a little disappointed they didn't show more with the hatch.
wasting 05-25-05, 10:20 PM so the question is, they took danielles baby but they didnt want claires baby they wanted walt
Or maybe they just wanted Walt more than Claire's baby, and they figure they can come get Aaron later; after all, Walt was trying to escape the island; Claire's baby ain't going anywhere :D
catdaddy 05-25-05, 10:24 PM It was one of my least favorate episodes. One hour of show crammed into two hours.
htevolution 05-25-05, 10:24 PM AAAAARRRGGGHHH! Either the local ABC's HD feed on Comcast in Dallas crapped out or my cable box locked up just as Charlie and Sayid heard the baby crying after the found the fire.
Can someone please summarize the last 5 minutes? Thanks in advance.
wasting 05-25-05, 10:25 PM the others looked like some normal white trash people, kinda disappointing
trixter23 05-25-05, 10:28 PM I'm sure next season we'll get a backstory or a synopsis on how they got on the island. Plus i guarantee they had lots of different types of supplies down in that hatch. I bet thats where they are hiding. We'll see a search party go down next season. I wonder if sayid can make a motor for another boat considering they have to have gas somewhere since they were using a motor boat
Great episode. 3 story lines on the island (ocean) kept the pace to the max. That science teacher departure even though I saw it coming was a shocker.
Carl Holt 05-25-05, 10:31 PM Given the way Hollywood is, is anyone really surprised at what was under the hatch?
Or course they want Walt, the numbers were bad but Walt is the luckiest person around. The two would cancel each other out. Kind of like a Seinfeld episode.
trixter23 05-25-05, 10:32 PM Especially so soon, i was shocked it was in the first 10 minutes
Anyone know what Aaron means?
Means Enlightened from the Hebrew
OMFG!! I'm cursed like Hurley! First WJLA is breaking up, so I have to keep switching to my SD signal via D*TV, then around 9:30 my power goes out and didn't come back for 45minutes. Thank god they are replaying this on saturday. Now I can't watch/read anything until then - I don't want to hear anything about the show until I see it for myself.
trixter23 05-25-05, 10:39 PM I would probably suggest not reading this forum then lol
WJLA didn't break up once for me.
Also, I think the point is that while everyone on the island is hiding from "the others," it was the ones escaping on the raft who should've been worrying.
The thread should be switched to read "SPOILERS"
It's not that they wanted Aaron less, they were after Walt all along. French lady said she heard them whispering that they were coming after "the boy" tonight. No one hit the camp tonight -- frenchie faked the fire. And on the boat they said they wanted "the boy".
I just hope that they don't follow the same story line as in the comics.
Carl Holt 05-25-05, 10:44 PM Actually one of the more intriguing things about this episode was the commercial for the new version of "Night Stalker" coming this fall. I wonder if it will be in HD and I wonder if the main character will be named Colshack (sp?)? I loved this show in the 70's.
jackshakes 05-25-05, 10:47 PM wow ... how very disappointing. I'm surprised so many people here have said they enjoyed it.
This episode only had two saving graces ... 1. Leslie blowing himself up (that was CLASSIC!) and 2. the shocker that the others wanted walt instead of the baby (you'll notice danielle said she heard the others say they wanted 'the boy')
And actually, bro exploding so early kinda screwed them I think ... after that I was expecting GREAT things if something that good happened that early.
And what the crap was with all the commercials? It was like I was watching MTV! 5 minutes of show, 10 minutes of commercial!
Overall I'm SUPER disappointed. This would have made a good regular episode, but man what a crappy finale.
... but of course I'll watch next season ... cause i'm a sucker.
anyone know the air date of season 2?
xboxjunkie 05-25-05, 10:53 PM Overall a good finale, wow the dude blowing up scared the bejesus out of me and my wife. The OTHERS have guns? Are they living under the island? Those trees keep looking like they get up rooted, how's that possible if the others are human like? They have a boat?
too many questions damn it.
I really enjoyed the episode. I have given up being frustrated by lack of answers with this show. As long as it keeps me entertained, I'm happy. When I start to get bored with it, that's when I'll quit watching.
Or if Sawyer is dead, I'll quit watching. Whichever comes first. :)
People seem to forget this was a season finale, not a series finale. I don't think they were planning to solve all the mysteries with this episode but just open new ones which they did successfully. Overall, I enjoyed the show and look forward for season 2 :)

It hasn't been established yet whether the others are on the same side as the "security system". They may be unwanted by the island, for all we know. They don't look too supernatural (as someone else pointed out).
bronowyn 05-25-05, 11:09 PM Means Enlightened from the Hebrew
I found some more meanings....
AARON (Hebrew & Arabic): Enlightened; (Aron)To Sing; shining light; high mountain; messenger; Lofty; exalted. Biblically, Aaron was Moses' older brother (and keeper by God's command). He was first high priest of the Israelites, remembered for the miraculous blossoming of his staff or rod.
If she spells it... Aaren (Scandinavian) Lofty or inspired.
How about... Aran (Thai) Forest.
There's also... Aren (Nigerian) eagle.
jackshakes 05-25-05, 11:11 PM the 'security system' probably isn't supernatural either. the black smoke is probably a byproduct of whatever it is causing the trees to uproot (explosive gas?)
we've just been hyped up so much by the hatch already that blowing it open and seeing a ladder doesn't have much of a climactic effect.
redvette 05-25-05, 11:13 PM Actually one of the more intriguing things about this episode was the commercial for the new version of "Night Stalker" coming this fall. I wonder if it will be in HD and I wonder if the main character will be named Colshack (sp?)? I loved this show in the 70's.
Yes, the main character will be reporter Carl Kolchak.....wonder if they can get the original Kolchak, Darren McGavin to make an appearance...
miltimj 05-25-05, 11:14 PM And what the crap was with all the commercials? It was like I was watching MTV! 5 minutes of show, 10 minutes of commercial!
Commercials? What are commercials? Haven't seen one in years... (okay so a few during the superbowl).
I agree with those who say the "others" are the ones on the boat. I think they live under the island... I initially thought the hatch was an escape, but the ladder starts from the top and stops after a few feet.
The "rescue" boat was pretty exciting, though I knew something was up once I saw that it was a boat that wasn't big enough to be thousands of miles from anywhere.
Also curious why the guy who claims to know dynamite (Artz) picks the stick that leaks the most... moron; kinda glad he's gone.
Interesting that Aaron was the name of the baby, and Exodus the name of the episode...
One final note... I think that they were going after the baby all along (and Ethan was part of "the others"). They just saw that Walt was leaving and they'd go after him, and they happened to be gone when Danielle brought Aaron. I don't think she started the fire.
Overall, a great show.. as others have said, it's a season finale, not a series finale, and they did a great job to hook us for next season.
Paul Bigelow 05-25-05, 11:22 PM Given what's happened this year, did we really expect any answers when the hatch was opened?
Locke did see the interior light up though in a previous episode, he should have known about the ladder already.

The "rescue" boat was pretty exciting, though I knew something was up once I saw that it was a boat that wasn't big enough to be thousands of miles from anywhere.
Yeah I thought that right away too "that boat is too small" ... then I had flashbacks from the villiage (movie) "maybe they were all of 20 miles away from civilization and these are fisherman out for a midnight catch" ... then I came to my senses "oh wait ... those are the others"
Also curious why the guy who claims to know dynamite (Artz) picks the stick that leaks the most... moron; kinda glad he's gone.

Carl Holt 05-25-05, 11:39 PM If she spells it... Aaren (Scandinavian) Lofty or inspired.

An inspired forest eagle? Isn't that what they saw fly away?
I just saw this with 4 other people and everyone agreed this was a pretty lame season finale. I am disappointed. Yes, I know they are supposed to leave us hanging, but how predictable regarding the hatch. Everyone thought they would probably blow it open, then right as they open it, the episode would end, and that is exactly what happened.
So Walt gets taken and they blow the hatch, and the rest was useless stuff drawn out over a 2 hour period in my opinion. Arzt getting blown up was pretty comical. They guy is standing next to an entire crate full of unstable dynamite when it goes off, but it wasn't even touched...OK
Mntneer 05-26-05, 12:10 AM I get the feeling that not even the Producers fully know where this story is going.
I liked the finale. I liked the hatch opening scene. I really liked the "Others" boat scene. Taking Walt makes sense. He has "powers," and I guess next season will be about them trying to get him back.
Shardik (as I call the monster alarm system) I think is a ghost of sorts, not actually physical.
labmansid 05-26-05, 12:23 AM Seems instead of blowing the hatch it would have been easier to go down the hole Locke got dragged into.
That bit that Locke did to Jack with the "Operation" joke sounds like something I would do, I like him! ;)
23 was a prominent number in this episode- Kate mentions her reward was at $23,000 and the flight boarded from gate #23.

seldenpat 05-26-05, 12:55 AM Not that it matters, since there are some new story lines, but the girls soccer uniform numbers in the airport as Hugo passed in his $1600 cart were 4,8,15,16,23, and 42 in order. And in case it wasn't mentioned in the previous 7000 posts, all of the above numbers have been retired by the NY Yankees. :D

Does anyone else think Sawyer is hanging on the side of the pirates boat and will return the hero, he has a gun.
I also think they could have given a little more resolution, in the tieing things up sense not pq.
HiDef Bob 05-26-05, 01:25 AM So, I wonder what missing scene will be shown tomorrow on Good Morning America?
miltimj 05-26-05, 01:37 AM Retired Yankees jerseys:
1 - Billy Martin
3 - Babe Ruth
4 - Lou Gehrig
5 - Joe Dimaggio
7 - Mickey Mantle
8 - Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra
9 - Roger Maris
10 - Phil Rizzuto
15 - Thurman Munson
16 - Whitey Ford
23 - Don Mattingly
32 - Elston Howard
37 - Casey Stengel (Manager)
42 - Jackie Robinson (all of MLB)
44 - Reggie Jackson
49 - Ron Guidry
Two possible allusions in this episode jumped out, though I have no idea if they mean anything.
As previously mentioned in an episode titled Exodus we have a baby named Aaron. Remember that in the Biblical story it was not Moses who ultimately led the Israelites into the promised land - it was Aaron. Moses was forbidden by God from entering for committing a transgression.
When Hurley asked Locke what he thought was in the container Locke said "hope". In the well known myth, Pandora opens a box she was not meant to open and released all the evils into the world. The only thing that remained after evil had been released was hope.
Before we go too far with this one how many other numbers have been retired by the Yankees?
1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 23, 32, 37, 42, 44, 49
I think the Yankees retired all the other numbers to mask Hurley's bad ones...

Gary McCoy 05-26-05, 01:51 AM Hurley has had some good lines before, but tonight:
Jack: "You want to carry some dynamite too?" (pause) "What?!?"
Hurley: "You've got some ..... Art ... on you."
Although I enjoyed the sequence, the dynamite explosions were way way underplayed. I've used it to blow stumps, and even the lower grades of dynamite are high explosives - debris lands hundreds of feet away. At the distances they used, if any survived they'd have been deaf, bloody, and blind.
Still I think that overall it was a decent season finale.

I completely missed the fact that the numbers were on their jerseys until I read the comments earlier in this thread and saw the pictures posted above.
mikey mo 05-26-05, 02:14 AM A one hour show stretched needlessly into two hours. I was expecting so much, but was disappointed. The continued flashbacks were too much.
Compare this with the great finale on Desperate Housewives.
Check out the car breakdown scene again. The car actually slows from 16 KPH to 15, then to 8 and finally to 4 KPH before they cut away.
Bullsteak 05-26-05, 02:16 AM As previously mentioned in an episode titled Exodus we have a baby named Aaron. Remember that in the Biblical story it was not Moses who ultimately led the Israelites into the promised land - it was Aaron. Moses was forbidden by God from entering for committing a transgression.
Actually Joshua led the Israelites into the Promised Land. Aaron was Moses' brother and was also forbidden to enter the Promised Land but did help Moses lead the exodus out of Egypt.
In Hebrew, the word Aaron means "bearer of martyrs", which could actually mean something.
Speaking of the phantom monster, how about the two swimming phantoms in the jungle? The first looked sepentine, the second looked like a big angel fish...
Back in the early days of this thread, someone posted a movie clip of the airplane engine exploding on the beach after ingesting one of the survivors. The clip very clearly shows a translucent phantom swooping down, hitting the engine as it explodes, and swooping up and away. At first, I thought it was an artifact used for timing the live shot with the CGI explosion, but now I'm not so sure...

HiDef Bob 05-26-05, 02:46 AM It is beginning to look like some kind of religious cult is running this island.
Wow, lot of angry folk around here that nothing was resolved. I'll assume they don't remember the good 'ol fashioned days when season finales regularly left you hanging all summer. Little thing called "Who Shot JR" jog your memories? How about when Sam proposed to somebody over the phone on "Cheers?" Was it Diane or was it the Councilwoman? And don't get me started on "Hill Street Blues." The summer cliffhanger was a staple of television back in the day. ;)
The "Lost" guys did it correctly. To have expected them to wrap everything up in two hours last night - knowing they'll be back next season - just wasn't realistic. I thought it was a fun finale. Not great, but enjoyable. And the shock factor was in full force last night. First when Artz blew himself up and then when the "security system" started uprooting the trees. We had the volume up pretty well and those two scenes came booming through the sub, scaring the bejesus out of my wife. OK and out of me as well. :) Enjoy your summers.
jmrobbins 05-26-05, 07:05 AM I thought the ending was a great way to end a continuing series for the season. It will keep us guessing all summer. Anyone who watches "Lost" who really expected resolutions, must be watching a different show. There is almost always 5min of "forward story" and 40min of filler.
trbarry 05-26-05, 07:18 AM When I watch the show I'm involved in it. I don't find myself thinking "get on with it, make something happen". Maybe later I wonder how they spent an entire hour at it but that to me doesn't mean it is going too slow as long as I was enjoying it at the time.
So I still think the entire thing is well paced.
Now just imagine all the off topic posts this thread can generate until there are new episodes. ;)

Gary Quiring 05-26-05, 07:21 AM It will keep us guessing all summer. Anyone who watches "Lost" who really expected resolutions, must be watching a different show. The first time we met Charlie, he was in confession. So, I'm hoping he just wanted the statue. Everyone else is throwing it all over, but, I'm guessing to a Catholic, it's the symbol of his religion. He's had waves of religion all through the thing... from his intro to praying with Rose. RED HERRING. please.
As others have said, if you were disappointed with last night's episode I think your expectations were way too high. This was not a SERIES finale, it was a SEASON finale. Why would everything be resolved in advance of next season?
Leslie blowing up really scared the CR*P out of me -- caught me totally off guard. I think my reaction was "Oh my God" which is similar to the way Hurley felt when he said "Dude." Even better was the fact that the explosion sound came from the rear speakers.
Maybe I missed something earlier in the year, but did anyone on the island know Hurley's first name was Hugo? Locke called him Hugo last night and I'm just wondering how he knew that was his first name.
bronowyn 05-26-05, 08:12 AM Locke called him Hugo last night and I'm just wondering how he knew that was his first name.
I was wondering the same thing... however, Hurley didn't seem surprised or anything.
Also, did anyone notice.. .maybe it was too obvious to write down.... that Hurley was the one with the spanish comic book with the crazy polar bear?
I thought the episode was pretty good-about what I expected. I now wonder if Ethan was just another castaway like Danielle and he also wanted Claire's baby to trade to the others. And just why do the others want children?
I also like Artz's rant to Hurley about not losing any weight. I'm guessing that many have griped about this on the net and the writers have heard this and are trying to satisfy the fans.
Sawyer looked quite pissed when he got on the plane. Is that just Sawyer being Sawyer or did something happen in the terminal. The flashback of him at the police station was presumably hours or even days before the flight.
I had hoped for a clue or glimpse of something that might further indicate tall section survivors on the island. I had convinced myself last week after the scene with Jack and Ana in the bar that we had a second group to look forward to.
Overall, I enjoyed the ride last night.

I found that funny especially after reading several posts recently regarding how he hasn't lost weight.
Just got an HDTV yesterday and am watching Lost on a local HD broadcast - however the show's not in widescreen, which I assumed it would be.
Anyone who's seen it on Hi-def before, is it 4:3 or 16:9? Thanks!
The last 10-15 minutes here it was 4:3. Hate when that happens!

DeathOpie 05-26-05, 08:55 AM I was born on 4/23. Luckily for me in 64 not 42, .........whew!!!!!!!!!
This show has a way of throwing in some really cool comedy when you least expect it. I think it was the Pilot episode during Locke's backstory when they used the movie "Office Space" cover letter reference that was a throw in for fans of that movie. I'm surprised no one lost a stapler. I agree about the Hurley losing weight rant was in response to message boards. I should of TIVO'd Hurley being on Kimmel last night.
snowcat 05-26-05, 08:59 AM As with the entire series, I really enjoyed last night's episode. I guessed that Artz was in trouble when he was really dominating the dialog and being pretty rude to everyone. So much for him being a regular next year. ;)
I am so glad that this thread is here. I try to catch the little hints here and there, but I get so wrapped up in the show that I missed a lot of the ones posted here.
I am trying to figure out how in the heck Michael, Sawyer, and Jin are going to get back to the island. Aren't they over 10 miles away by that point? Since Sawyer was shot, he might be attracting every single shark in the area.
It is going to be tough waiting for next season.

NorthJersey 05-26-05, 09:11 AM sure seems the "others" on the boat who kidnapped Walt are pirates from the black rock ship. I could only make out the guy talking to Michael from the "others" boat, but he sure could come off as a pirate.
I was kind of disappointed, like most of us, about last night's episode, but you guys do have a good point that it's a lead into next season. Just the pacing of the show, we're not going to have any kind of resolution for these guys until season 10. Whenever a cast member wants more $$$, bam, the writers will just have the "others" kill of their character.
One of the writers alluded to the fact that Michelle Rodriguez would have a part at the end, but she wan't in last night's episode, and she was one for what, a minute, last week ?
And didn't the same writer state that last night's episode would show why the plane came down ? If so, they must have edited that out, because I don't see it (unless he was alluding to the fact that the "shadows" or "ghosts" brought it down. I guess we won't know until season 3 or 4.
I also like Artz's rant to Hurley about not losing any weight. I'm guessing that many have griped about this on the net and the writers have heard this and are trying to satisfy the fans.
They also referred to Hurley as "fat" for (I believe) the first time an episode or two back ("next time you want to keep a secret, don't tell the fat guy").
sure seems the "others" on the boat who kidnapped Walt are pirates from the black rock ship. I could only make out the guy talking to Michael from the "others" boat, but he sure could come off as a pirate.
So where did they get the power boat?
xboxjunkie 05-26-05, 09:16 AM sure seems the "others" on the boat who kidnapped Walt are pirates from the black rock ship.
So pirates from the Black Rock have powered boats? I don't buy it.
xboxjunkie 05-26-05, 09:18 AM maybe it was Russo's team boat and they took it?
GlendaleHDTV 05-26-05, 09:25 AM Anyone else have an X-Files flashback when Jack through the dynamite down in the hole? It looked to me like that black "smoke" was alive in some way (notice how fast it moved away at the very end of the scene). With Danielle's comments on the others being "infected", I'm wondering if the black smoke is similar to the black oil that would infect people on X-Files.
barhoram 05-26-05, 09:27 AM Is it possible that the people in the boat aren't the "others" but another group, stranded or whatever that are also afraid of the "others"...and took walt as some sort of protection or sacrafice (kinda like what Russo was attempting to do)?

if they had a boat like that, why are they still on the island?
rickmccamy 05-26-05, 09:37 AM Check out the look on Kate's face as the Phantom smoke dissapates, we are supposed to believe that it was more than smoke.
timmy1376 05-26-05, 09:45 AM Ok, so someone has probably already said these things before, but this is one hellava massive thread so I will say it too.
It looked to me like it was snowing when the "other" came to get Walt. They were also very bundeled up, like it was cold.
Hurley's numbers could very well be latitude and longitude, such as 4.8151 and 6.2342 (now real sure how that works), as in the location of the island. Who knows!
I don't know if anyone noticed, but while they were mentioning the numbers "23" and the "$23,000" the clock on my cable box was at exactly "8:23" (central time). Don't know if it was the same for anyone else. Coincidence?
Weird

I liked how Locke was wheeled right past Hurley in airport. Kind of a Hitchcock-ian moment.

Yes I had the same feeling very strange. Also I thought it looked like it was snowing as well and looked very cold.
This is one strange show that I almost gave up on a while back but now can't wait to see the new season
I'm beginning to think the show will end with it all having been Hurley's strange dream after a junk food super-binge.
For a man of Hurley's size, he moved pretty well in those airport scenes. Hoping for his sake there weren't many retakes.

I thought it was hilarious how the sweat ring around Hurley's neck got bigger and bigger each scene they showed him running through the airport. Nice attention to detail. My wife thought it was disgusting :)
Lol....Arzt, we hardly knew ye....
Gruesome thing to laugh at, but I couldn't help it! BOOM!
xboxjunkie 05-26-05, 10:03 AM Just thought of a funny part....when Locke and Jack are getting ready to remove the dynomite, after Art blew up....
Locke: Jack you ever play operation?
Jack: Yeah , why?
Locke: I always got nailed by the funny bone.........BZZZZZZZZ *smiles*.
Jack : You like playin games John?
Locke: Yeah!!
:D
RKDauph 05-26-05, 10:04 AM Just a picky detail but: An aircraft radar does not sweep like that - it pans back and forth 45 degree off the nose. Nor do they beep on blip contact.

ftboomer 05-26-05, 10:06 AM i just thought they were flies/nats around the light at night...
They were flies and such at first, then at one point it started to rain the the rain was gone. Must have filmed it over several hours.

"the others" didnt look like the cleanest people either :p
Overall a good finale, wow the dude blowing up scared the bejesus out of me and my wife. The OTHERS have guns? Are they living under the island? Those trees keep looking like they get up rooted, how's that possible if the others are human like? They have a boat?
too many questions damn it.
I think the OTHERS are the black smokey things....Not sure what the boneheads in the boat were. Descendants of the Black Rock? Dunno?
I thought the finale was good, I wasn't expecting anything to get resolved, they would shoot themselves in the foot.
Elite09 05-26-05, 10:19 AM This was posted in another forum about the missing scene on Good Morning America.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just watched the deleted scene. It basically went like this (I didn't have the closed captioning on):
The scene opens on the beach with a picture of a raw egg cracked open at the top. Danielle is holding it, then tilts it back and swallows the insides of the egg. Yummy!
Picture moves to Charlie and Claire (holding the baby): Charlie is talking about how crazy Danielle is. He says something like, "She tried to blow my head off in the jungle for no reason whatsoever. She says she heard whispers...that doesn't mean anything, Claire."
Claire: When Ethan took me, however I got away...I knew they would be back.
Charlie (with a look of sudden realization): Is that why...you've not named the baby?
Claire kisses the baby's head. End scene.
It definitely sounded like she said she knew THEY would be back...but like I said...my CC wasn't on.

The whole scene with the others reminded me of "Deliverance". ;)
We just needed some dueling banjos.
htevolution 05-26-05, 10:22 AM For a man of Hurley's size, he moved pretty well in those airport scenes. Hoping for his sake there weren't many retakes.
I thought the same thing. The sweat rings on his shirt might not have been supplied by the makeup dept. either!
philw1776 05-26-05, 10:26 AM The episode set us up for more Jack vs Locke competition. Jack asks Kate to "watch my back" because "we have a Locke problem." Jack IS a bit of a control freak, unilaterally abrogating the agreement and carrying the dynamite. Although I'm a science guy, supposedly like Jack, I like Locke much better.
Notice how Jack sensibly put his pack down when the monster attacked while Kate ran blithly along with her supposed load of dynamite? An editing continuity error or showing that Kate panicked?
Maybe I missed something earlier in the year, but did anyone on the island know Hurley's first name was Hugo? Locke called him Hugo last night and I'm just wondering how he knew that was his first name.
He told Jack his name, how it wasn't really Hurley, but Hugo Reyes.
I am trying to figure out how in the heck Michael, Sawyer, and Jin are going to get back to the island. Aren't they over 10 miles away by that point? Since Sawyer was shot, he might be attracting every single shark in the area.

They will likely pull a "jaws" and patch together some debris to float with.
htevolution 05-26-05, 10:31 AM If/when Sawyer makes it back to the island, things could get very interesting. I'd assume everyone else either has or will soon take his stash of "trade goods," but now Sawyer knows everyone's innermost thoughts fromt their messages in the bottle.
He's got intellectual capital now...including Hurley's $160 million secret (if Sawyer can figure out who Hugo really is).
Maybe I missed something earlier in the year, but did anyone on the island know Hurley's first name was Hugo? Locke called him Hugo last night and I'm just wondering how he knew that was his first name.
I was wondering the same thing. Perhaps a subject to flashback on the next season ? :)

No, he told Jack his real name as an example of why they needed a Census. A name like Hugo probably spread around the camp pretty quickly. Almost as bad as Leslie :-)
