View Full Version : LOST - on ABC in HDTV - NO SPOILERS
Gecko85 09-30-05, 05:57 PM A statement taken issue with rather strongly by writer/producer Javier Grillo-Marxurach here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/chaodai/32807.html).
Wow. That's the most well-written, clear, and articulate rebuttal/response I've ever read.
I've had a subscription to Rolling Stone for over 20 years and I read that piece last weekend. Actually, the cover story was about Evangeline Lilly really and the David Fury thing was just a little side bar. When I read it the first thing I thought was "sour grapes". The guy was recently "let go" from one of the most successful new TV shows in a long time and his comments just came off as a bit too venomous for me to really put much stock in them given the situation. Nice to read the rebuttal. Pretty interesting just in general from a fan's perspective really. Is it Wednesday yet? :)
ron
Well the guy landed all right. And if he's too venomous with a previous employer, then it can't be good for his relationship with his current employer.
Anyways, if it's that laid out, what's taking them so frigging long? Don't wait until 5 seasons to reveal the island, monster, etc. Get those over with this season and then evolve your story. Make it about fight for survival against the Others or whatever.
Just because the survivors find out info. doesn't mean they can suddenly get off the island. The show could be about the quest to escape rather than what it is currently, trying to figure out what the f*** is going on and ruminating on the past. The back stories were good at first but they're getting a bit stale now (like the last one involving Michael was a snooze).
How many ephiphanies could each of these characters have in their pasts?
Edit: BTW, Howard Stern was complaining about how dark the second ep. was. Like some of us have noted, they filmed night scenes, like on the raft, to save money by filming in studio rather than an outdoors location shoot. Surely with the kind of ratings this show is getting, ABC could loosen the purse strings a bit? These actors aren't earning big money yet, unless ABC unilaterally renegotiated their contracts.
ridgefamus 09-30-05, 06:48 PM It's possible the granularity is 108 minutes. Enough time to blow the hatch, go back to camp, listen to Jack's speech and then return to the hatch.
It's the pressure of responding to that 108-minute timer that's driving Desmond crazy.
Now wait a minute. Who says the resetting of the timer (if that's what Desmond pecked on his keyboard) at the start of the show was in the same time-frame as the rest of the hatch/bunker series of events? We have jumped around so much with the varying perspectives of the principals that it's just too hard to figure out what the actual sequence of events may be. I'm willing to go along with the masses on this for the fun of speculation but I don't consider it so definitive as to say it was the last time the digits were reset before Locke did it.
Whitearrow 09-30-05, 06:52 PM Wow. That's the most well-written, clear, and articulate rebuttal/response I've ever read.
"Javi" has been incredibly open, friendly, and willing to share with the Lost fan community. What Fury said contradicted things he's said to fans over the past year, and that really upset him (as you can probably tell).
If you go down a couple of posts in his livejournal, you'll see he has two posts on the Emmy-going experience. Very funny, sweet and entertaining. Actually, his whole LJ is worth poking through. He doesn't post that frequently and it's always worth reading.
I understand he wrote this coming week's episode, and he might have some interesting stuff to share after it airs.
CPanther95 09-30-05, 06:54 PM The fact that it didn't start back immediately, means that all the speculation is academic at this point.

Bud, it sounds like this whole series is just going to be pure torture for you :).
You're right about Fury landing "alright". I'm really interested to see what impact he has on 24 next season.
ron
I agree that the backstories are already getting old. I appreciate that the producers of Lost have decided to go this route to draw the story out and progressively reveal more about the primary characters, but it can easily be overdone. If it takes 4 or 5 seasons to find out all the details of how and why, I can say right now that my interest isn't going to last that long. The knowledge that they're trying to milk the secrets of the island for 4 or 5 seasons is a real turnoff for me (can you imagine how many pages of this thread you'd have to read through to make sure you weren't repeating something?). There have been many episodes where I felt not enough was happening to keep my interest, but I keep hoping that the pace will pick up (it doesn't have to be as intense as 24, but come on). If more emphasis isn't put on the day-to-day struggle of survival and working for a future goal with associated progress and setbacks, I'm afraid I may not stick with it through the rest of this season. Life is too short.

Mr.Poindexter 09-30-05, 07:42 PM I agree that this past flashback was a snoozer, but that doesn't mean they are all going to be stale. We still don't know why Locke couldn't walk, why Hurley was in the mental ward and I am sure there are other things we would like to know as well, but those are two big ones.
herdfan 09-30-05, 08:47 PM Except that in this day and age, governments aren't the only ones with aerial photography and high-resolution satellites. Suppressing the content of maps isn't sufficient today; if you want to hide an island, you have to make the island, itself, look like it's not there...~Dan
But back during the time the bunker looks to have been built, governments were the only ones with the technology. And yes while private companies do have that now, what would make them go looking for a remote island is the middle of the Pacific?

Even without revealing something significant, they could have thrown us a bone of some sort. This was the first backstory I can recall that didn't have any link to another survivor or to what's going on on the island.
But it would take 4 or 5 snoozers in a row before I really start bitching about the show in general - even then, I'll still be tuning in the following week.
jagouar 09-30-05, 08:59 PM I agree.... the backstories need to start being limited. they have way too many questions left unanswered on the island as it is.
It seems that they want to add more and more to it w/o solving existing stuff. what the numbers mean, the creatures on the island, why the bunker is there, who the others are (since they have a boat and gas), theres alot of stuff from season 1 that was left unanswered and its starting to piss me off because I dont even remember some of the stuff from season 1 now and its making it harder to follow.
mdesmarais 09-30-05, 09:00 PM I thought when Locke said "44 days" since the crash, that Desmond looked like that was significant- like maybe something else happened 44 days ago that he noticed?
Markd
CPanther95 09-30-05, 09:12 PM The other aspect of the backstories that is a goldmine just waiting to be tapped is the revelation of all the links between the passengers. They could fill 3 shows with nothing but fully exploring the many 1 degrees of separation.
The only thing they've revealed to the characters is the link between Sawyer and Jack's Dad.

Honestly couldn't tell if the raft scene from ep. 2 was filmed in an ocean or a giant tank. I still maintain the scenes weren't dark enough. The lighting (for a full moon) looked forced and unnatural. The scene would have worked much better with a deep blue tint. I kept thinking, where's all this danged light coming from?

The secret answer is: "Can you smell carrot!" Locke didn't know this answer. But now it all makes sense. The person Desmond was expecting was none other than

More like "gee, wasn't that the day I tested the giant magnetic sky sweeper on full strength?" ;-)
The think the giant magnetic sky sweeper was the reason the back of the plane was ripped off and then right before it crashed Desmond reversed the polarity so the plane softly floated to the ground. That would explain why so many survived.... either that or everyone jumped up in the air right before it crashed. :p

Chris Rein 10-01-05, 04:05 AM Interesting theory I found on the Lost official webpage boards...
There are a couple of clues in the show that have led me in this direction. The mining ship called the "Black Rock" and the hatch with the sources of magnetism inside (Jack's key), the power cable running from or to the ocean. So I thought lets look at each number, how it relates to the periodic table, and what the properties, uses, and sources of each of the six elements involved are. I'll post my thoughts on all of this at the end...
#4 = Beryllium (Be)
Properties: Beryllium has a melting point of 127+/-5°C, boiling point of 2970°C, specific gravity of 1.848 (20°C), and valence of 2. The metal is steel-gray in color, very light, with one of the highest melting points of the light metals. Its modulus of elasticity is a third higher than that of steel. Beryllium has high thermal conductivity, is nonmagnetic, and resists attack by concentrated nitric acid. Beryllium resists oxidation in air at ordinary temperatures. The metal has a high permeability to x-radiation. When bombarded by alpha particles, it yields neutrons in the ratio of approximately 30 million neutrons per million alpha particles. Beryllium and its compounds are toxic and should not be tasted to verify the metal's sweetness.
Uses:Precious forms of beryl include aquamarine, morganite, and emerald. Beryllium is used as an alloying agent in producing beryllium copper, which is used for springs, electrical contacts, nonsparking tools, and spot-welding electrodes. It is used in many structural components of the space shuttle and other aerospace craft. Beryllium foil is used in x-ray lithography for making integrated circuits. It is used as a reflector or moderator in nuclear reactions. Beryllium is used in gyroscopes and computer parts. The oxide has a very high melting point and is used in ceramics and nuclear applications.
Sources: Beryllium is found in approximately 30 mineral species, including beryl (3BeO Al2O3 6SiO2), bertrandite (4BeO 2SiO2 H2O), chrysoberyl, and phenacite. The metal may be prepared by reducing beryllium fluoride with magnesium metal.
#8 = Oxygen (O)
Properties: Oxygen gas is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. The liquid and solid forms are a pale blue color and are strongly paramagnetic. Oxygen supports combustion, combines with most elements, and is a component of hundreds of thousands of organic compounds. Ozone (O3), a highly active compound with a name derived from the Greek word for 'I smell', is formed by the action of an electrical discharge or ultraviolet light on oxygen.
Uses: Oxygen was the atomic weight standard of comparison for the other elements until 1961 when the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry adopted carbon 12 as the new basis. It is the third most abundant element found in the sun and the earth, and it plays a part in the carbon-nitrogen cycle. Excited oxygen yields the bright red and yellow-green colors of the Aurora. Oxygen enrichment of steel blast furnaces accounts for the greatest use of the gas. Large quantities are used in making synthesis gas for ammonia, methanol, and ethylene oxide. It is also used as a bleach, for oxidizing oils, for oxy-acetylene welding, and for determining carbon content of steel and organic compounds. Plants and animals require oxygen for respiration. Hospitals frequently prescribe oxygen for patients. Approximately two thirds of the human body and nine tenths of the mass of water is oxygen.
#15 = Phosphorus (P)
Properties: The melting point of phosphorus (white) is 44.1°C, boiling point (white) is 280°C, specific gravity (white) is 1.82, (red) 2.20, (black) 2.25-2.69, with a valence of 3 or 5. There are four allotropic forms of phosphorus: two forms of white (or yellow), red, and black (or violet). White phosphorus exhibits a and b modifications, with a transition temperature between the two forms at -3.8°C. Ordinary phosphorus is a waxy white solid. It is colorless and transparent in its pure form. Phosphorus is insoluble in water, but soluble in carbon disulfide. Phosphorus burns spontaneously in air to its pentoxide. It is highly poisonous, with a lethal dose of ~50 mg. White phosphorus should be stored under water and handled with forceps. It causes severe burns when in contact with skin. White phosphorus is converted to red phosphorus when exposed to sunlight or heated in its own vapor to 250°C. Unlike white phosphorus, red phosphorus does not phosphoresce in air, although it still requires careful handling.
Uses: Red phosphorus, which is relatively stable, is used to make safety matches, tracer bullets, incendiary devices, pesticides, pyrotechnic devices, and many other products. There is a high demand for phosphates for use as fertilizers. Phosphates are also used to make certain glasses (e.g., for sodium lamps). Trisodium phosphate is used as a cleaner, water softener, and scale/corrosion inhibitor. Bone ash (calcium phosphate) is used to make chinaware and to make monocalcium phosphate for baking powder. Phosphorus is used to make steels and phosphor bronze and is added to other alloys. There are many uses for organic phosphorus compounds. Phosphorus is an essential element in plant and animal cytoplasm. In humans, it is essential for proper skeletal and nervous system formation and function.
Sources: Phosphorus is not found free in nature. The element is widely distributed in minerals. Apatite, an impure tricalcium phosphate, is an important source of phosphorus.
#16 = Sulfur (S)
Properties: Sulfur has a melting point of 112.8°C (rhombic) or 119.0°C (monoclinic), boiling point of 444.674°C, specific gravity of 2.07 (rhombic) or 1.957 (monoclinic) at 20°C, with a valence of 2, 4, or 6. Sulfur is a pale yellow, brittle, odorless solid. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in carbon disulfide. Multiple allotropes of sulfur are known.
Uses: Sulfur is a component of gunpowder. It is used in the vulcanization of rubber. Sulfur has applications as a fungicide, fumigant, and in the making of fertilizers. It is used to make sulfuric acid. Sulfur is used in the making of several types of paper and as a bleaching agent. Elemental sulfur is used as an electrical insulator. The organic compounds of sulfur have many uses. Sulfur is an element that is essential for life. However, sulfur compounds can be highly toxic. For example, small amounts of hydrogen sulfide can be metabolized, but higher concentrations can quickly cause death from respiratory paralysis. Hydrogen sulfide quickly deadens the sense of smell. Sulfur dioxide is an important atmospheric pollutant.
Sources: Sulfur is found in meteorites and native in proximity to hot springs and volcanoes. It is found in many minerals, including galena, iron pyrite, sphalerite, stibnite, cinnabar, Epsom salts, gypsum, celestite, and barite. Sulfur also occurs in petroleum crude oil and natural gas. The Frasch process may be used to obtain sulfur commercially. In this process, heated water is forced into wells sunk into salt domes in order to melt the sulfur. The water is then brought to the surface.
#23 = Vanadium (V)
Properties: Vanadium has a melting point of 1890+/-10°C, boiling point of 3380°C, specific gravity of 6.11 (18.7°C), with a valence of 2, 3, 4, or 5. Pure vanadium is a soft, ductile bright white metal. Vanadium has good corrosion resistance to alkalis, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and saltwater, but it oxidizes readily at temperatures exceeding 660°C. The metal has good structural strength and a low fission neutron cross section. Vanadium and all of its compounds are toxic and should be handled with care.
Uses: Vanadium is used in nuclear applications, for producing rust-resistant spring and high-speed tool steels, and as a carbide stabilizer in making steels. Approximately 80% of the vanadium that is produced is used as a steel additive or ferrovanadium. Vanadium foil is used as a bonding agent for cladding steel with titanium. Vanadium pentoxide is used as a catalyst, as a mordant for dyeing and printing fabrics, in the manufacture of aniline black, and in the ceramics industry. Vanadium-gallium tape is used to produce superconducting magnets.
Sources: Vanadium occurs in approximately 65 minerals, including vanadinite, carnotite, patronite, and roscoelite. It is also found in certain iron ores and phosphate rock and in some crude oils as organic complexes. Vanadium is found in small percentages in meteorites. High purity ductile vanadium may be obtained by reducing vanadium trichloride with magnesium or a magnesium-sodium mixture. Vanadium metal also may be produced by calcium reduction of V2O5 in a pressure vessel.
#42 = Molybdenum (Mo)
Properties: Molybdenum does not occur free in nature; it is usually found in molybdenite ore, MoS2, and wulfenite ore, PbMoO4. Molybdenum is also recovered as a by-product of copper and tungsten mining. It is a silvery-white metal of the chromium group. It is very hard and tough, but it is softer and more ductile than tungsten. It has a high elastic modulus. Of the readily-available metals, only tungsten and tantalum have higher melting points.
Uses: Molybdenum is an important alloying agent which contributes to the hardenability and toughness of quenched and tempered steels. It also improves the strength of steel at high temperatures. It is used in certain heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant nickel-based alloys. Ferro-molybdenum is used to add hardness and toughness to gun barrels, boilers plates, tools, and armor plate. Almost all ultra-high strength steels contain 0.25% to 8% molybdenum. Molybdenum is used in nuclear energy applications and for missile and aircraft parts. Molybdenum oxidizes at elevated temperatures. Some molybdenum compounds are used to color pottery and fabrics. Molybdenum is used to make filament supports in incandescent lamps and as filaments in other electrical devices. The metal has found application as electrodes for electrically-heated glass furnaces. Molybdenum is valuable as a catalyst in the refining of petroleum. The metal is an essential trace element in plant nutrition. Molybdenum sulfide is used as a lubricant, particularly at high temperatures where oils would decompose. Molybdenum forms salts with valencies of 3, 4, or 6, but the hexavalent salts are the most stable.
Thoughts... Now, I'm not a scientist (but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn last night). Seriously, I copied and pasted all of this from a website about chemistry. I find it interesting that many of these elements have steel as a use. I also found it very interesting that Molybdenum is used in nuclear energy applications. I believe the Black Rock ship was there mining for copper, which is very abundant on this island. Question that I have for any scientist, if all these elements are on the island (be it artificial or in natural form, meteorite?), could most everything found in the hatch (except for the food in the storage closet) have been manufactured on the island, including the hatch itself? If so, the island is obvously "special" and any company (the name of the symbol on Desmonds coat) that discovered all of this would do well to "protect and preserve" it. I definitely think there are many different theories that could evolve out of this idea and many questions:
Did a meteriote hit the island?
Is the Island itself a meteorite?
Is there a nuclear reactor on or under the surface?
Are they (Desmonds group) building a secret weapon?
I thought when Locke said "44 days" since the crash, that Desmond looked like that was significant- like maybe something else happened 44 days ago that he noticed?
Markd
I believe the significant part of this is when The French Chick said her team got sick after about 2 months on the island....it's getting close to when survivors should start getting sick....unless Desmond is responsible for preventing an outbreak by typing in the numbers periodically.
I think Desmond will be killed, releasing the virus, and all hell really breaks loose. Kinda validates Walts' backwards statement "Press the button, no buttons' bad". Then again, Locke now knows how to enter the code....perhaps he really becomes "HIM"....Desmonds' relief.
Also, has anyone pointed out that the girl who tossed the explosive onto the raft looked very much like the girl who drowned early in S1?

I agree that this past flashback was a snoozer, but that doesn't mean they are all going to be stale. We still don't know why Locke couldn't walk, why Hurley was in the mental ward and I am sure there are other things we would like to know as well, but those are two big ones.
Not to mention that there are 30-odd other survivors we know nothing about who could step up to become main characters.
I read an interesting article on Lost that was in the NY Times. I think it was Sept. 18th, so very recent. I could post a link to the text of it I found if anyone is curious, but beware it has what might be a spoiler at the very end of it, so you have to stop yourself reading the very end.
Anyway, some of the interesting non-spoiler things said in the article are:
- The writers apparently have articles from the Weekly World News (fake newspaper) posted in the writing room, which they may be using for inspiration. Or it might have been a red herring to throw off the article reporter. A time portal was mentioned in one headline. <-- Moderator(s), if that's considered a spoiler, please remove that sentence. I don't think it is because it's not clear that just because there happened to be a WWN story headline in the writers room saying that doesn't mean it will appear in the show.
- The writers are very aware of series like Twin Peaks, where handling the reveal of central mysteries is critical and can cause viewer loss.
- They like Michael Crichton stories, and are attempting to always provide at least plausible scientific explanations for anything that happens in the show. For me, this is increasing the odds that the "black smoke monster" may be nanotech foglets acting in unison. See the Crichton book PREY for details.
- While they do claim to know how the series ends and a general idea of how it will get there, they don't seem to have a solid plan of how to handle the seasonal planning. One problem is they don't know how many seasons the show will run. I get the distinct impression they are definitely "winging it" as they go for a great deal of the show content. So again, this makes me think more of Twin Peaks or X-Files rather than a more concretely planned show like Babylon 5 that has a "series bible" pre-written before production.
this is increasing the odds that the "black smoke monster" may be nanotech foglets acting in unison.
Dear heavens, let's hope not. Next thing you know, the Borg will show up. Puh-Leez.
P.S. An editorial. YMMV. :)

Curb Your Enthusiasm with Larry David on HBO.
I always thought they should have started Seinfeld after a 2 year hiatus by having a cop walk back to the cell where they were sitting, look at his watch, open the door and say: "OK, two years. You can go now."
I thought for sure that they were going to do that too! I remember them being sentenced to one year though - was it one or two? I wonder if they ever though of it?
Back to Lost: I cringed thinking about all that salt water in Sawyer's gunshot wound; only one person has mentioned it.

Mr.Poindexter 10-01-05, 05:02 PM maxman, the salt water will hurt like hell, but it isn't like the gunshot isn't going to hurt like hell anyway. Plus, the salt water is very good for the wound.

ricwhite 10-01-05, 08:38 PM This is a theory about who "HIM" is. As we know, Desmond asked John Locke "Are you him?" John pretended to be but could not answer the code (answer to a riddle) and, therefore, Desmond declared that he was not "Him." But I think I know who "HIM" is.
Was "Him" on Oceanic Flight 815? Yes
Was "Him" a survivor? Yes

Did the plane crash because "Him" was on it? Yes
Was it destiny that "Him" was on flight 815? Yes
Does "Him" already know the number code for the computer countdown? Yes
Does "Him" go through the hatch and into the bunker? Yes
Will "Him" know the answer to the riddle code? Yes
Is "Him's" name Hurley (Hugo)? Yes
Does he know he is "Him." Not yet
Clues throughout the series indicate that Hurley obtaining the numbers could be a prime reason why the plane crashed. Cursed? Maybe. But more likely it led to a series of events which culminated in the crash of flight 815 on the island. Clues in the series indicate that they were "brought there for a reason." That reason was that Hurley (Hugo) is now the "owner" of the numbers and he must be led to the island. Hurley himself thought that the crash was caused by. . . . Him.
We will probably find out that Hurley's friend in the Mental Institution was in that very bunker at some time previous to him being institutionalized.
We already know from the previews that Hurley will go into the bunker. When he does, Locke may talk to him in front of Desmond and say the riddle he couldn't answer – "What did the snowman say to the other snowman?" Hurley (Hugo) will probably say something like, "Dude, everybody knows that. Can you smell the carrots?" Desmond will then know he's is "Him." That, and the fact that he knows the number code and was led to the island.
Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other, "does this taste funny to you?"
That only works on elevators. :)
Tell that to Bugs Bunny.
Barrybud 10-02-05, 12:10 AM Have "The Numbers" and Marseille Rousseau been discussed already? Well nothing comes up under the search in this thread. I am really surprised that this has not been brought to this thread.
I don't want to get slapped for posting duplicate material.
This is posted on a LOST blog here www.fotolog.net/oxaxa/
============================================================ =
An interesting naturally occurring theory found in our world that states everyone has a mirror image somewhere in the world. You may have heard of this. Rousseau’s genetic mirror theory says that everyone in the world has an exact twin somewhere, however according to the theory you never encounter this person, by laws of probability and other natural occurring phenomenon.
It's the theory that was devised by a French Mathematician named Marseille Rousseau in the year 1988. He used a series of numbers to explain his theory. Now I know you're not going to believe this but here goes.
4 8 15 16 23 42
The 4 stands for 4 degrees of separation (not 6 or 7 as commonly stated. Rousseau believed that everyone in the world was connected by four different people. So in theory could meet yourself by using four different people connected to you. Example: Your brother's, boss's, neighbor nephew, knows your mirror. Hard to believe, I know but keep reading.
The 8 stands for the eighth continent, or the only place in the world where you could meet your mirror. He calculated it to be somewhere in the south pacific. Now we know it's not actually as large as the other continents but it’s used figuratively because everyone in all 7 continents could meet there mirror on the 8th universal continent.
The 15 stands for the chances of you actually meeting yourself on this place, as in 15 out of 4,815,162,342. Look at the second set "815." Ring any bells? Interesting huh? The 16 stands for the maximum amount of people that could encounter their twin all at the same time. Think about the number of main characters.
The 23 is the number of years apart your twin and yourself are. You are not the same age as your twin. By chance and probability it takes 23 years exactly for the same genes that made you to be connected again to form another you.
The 42 stands for the maximum number of years your twin and yourself can be alive at the same time. However people do die at different times so that’s why everyone isn't dead at 75. For example my twin was born on Sept. 6 2003 b/c I was born on Sept. 6 1980. Now that doesn't mean I will die in the year 2045, I could, but it’s not set in stone. My twin could die when he is 16, and then the whole thing starts over again.
==================================================
The fact that the French woman’s last name is Rousseau seems to make this more than a coincidence.
CPanther95 10-02-05, 12:17 AM Not much of a coincidence if the whole thing is just made up garbage post-LOST. Do you really believe that is legit?
Next we'll read about an ancient Greek philosopher that was named Hugo Hurley....
Someone has fessed up to faking the Rousseau book. See http://www.livejournal.com/users/mattalcala/15575.html#cutid1
Barrybud 10-02-05, 09:55 AM Nice!
I've seen it on half a dozen Lost forums and people are going ape sheet over it.
optivity 10-02-05, 09:58 AM It reminds me of trying to come up with another Seinfeld - and focusing on "it's a show about nothing" - Gee, I can do that. Curb Your Enthusiasm with Larry David on HBO.
I always thought they should have started Seinfeld after a 2 year hiatus by having a cop walk back to the cell where they were sitting, look at his watch, open the door and say: "OK, two years. You can go now."Larry David is "painfully" hilarious... pure genius! ;)
CPanther95 10-02-05, 10:46 AM Like Seinfeld, CYE is much more than a "show about nothing".
optivity 10-02-05, 11:45 AM IMO... two of the top-three situation comedies with "The Larry Sanders Show" being number 3. ;)
telemike 10-03-05, 08:54 AM Thos numbers entered into the computer reset a count down timer to blow up the whole island

I thought for sure that they were going to do that too! I remember them being sentenced to one year though - was it one or two? I wonder if they ever though of it?
Back to Lost: I cringed thinking about all that salt water in Sawyer's gunshot wound; only one person has mentioned it.
(Can't keep up with the posts here --- it's an all day job)
Salt water couldn't hurt nowhere nearly as bad as him digging his finger in there.
garydean 10-03-05, 10:40 AM Is discussing the promo for this Wednesday's show considered spoiler material? Because I've seen some things that need to be discussed... :)
CPanther95 10-03-05, 11:19 AM The preview following the show is fair game.
garydean 10-03-05, 11:30 AM OK then. In the promo for Season 2 Episode 3, I saw:
(1) Desmond running through the jungle
(2) Locke on his knees in the geodesic computer room, and the Apple ][ monitor is on the floor like it had fallen off the desk. The Canadian promo shows what happened (OK to discuss?)
(3) Hurley at the entrance of the food storage room
CPanther95 10-03-05, 11:34 AM We've discussed all 3, but feel free to add your $0.02.
Don't know about the Canadian preview - is it significantly different?
garydean 10-03-05, 11:42 AM The Canadian promo shows Kate jumping Desmond and his gun going off. Then they show the computer monitor with a hole in it and some smoke coming out.
Then, while watching Nightstalker, ABC showed a slightly modified promo with about three different clips of Desmond running and the timer down to 1:07. Sayid is in the hatch, too. And Jack is crying at the end of that one.
Death to the Apple II !! :)
Mr.Poindexter 10-03-05, 12:07 PM I guess the only food that will survive that episode will be the Apollo candy bars that Kate stuffed down her backside. As if the other survivors didn't have enough reason to try and get into her pants, now she has candy down there too.
Half Fast 10-03-05, 01:05 PM Mmmmm, candy pants!
The Canadian promo shows Kate jumping Desmond and his gun going off. Then they show the computer monitor with a hole in it and some smoke coming out.
I guess that explains Locke crying out: "It wasn't supposed to be this way!"
Then, while watching Nightstalker, ABC showed a slightly modified promo with about three different clips of Desmond running and the timer down to 1:07. Sayid is in the hatch, too. And Jack is crying at the end of that one.
Uh, oh! Guess what happens in Episode Four...

broadwayblue 10-03-05, 01:26 PM anyone know what was up with the boat in the background in the scene where Michael and Sawyer were waking up in the morning on the remnants of their pontoon? i find it hard to believe that it was there by accident.
garydean 10-03-05, 01:51 PM Uh, oh! Guess what happens in Episode Four...
~Dan
Here's my guess:
We all know a computer can work without the monitor. It just makes typing a little more difficult. I am guessing that Locke will try to remember the numbers dictated to him by Desmond. Hurley will overhear him and be forced to do something he doesn't want to do... use the numbers. Hurley recites the numbers, Locke carefully types them in, and the day is saved. However, Hurley will get the job title "Chief Number Typer" and get to live near the food.
Again... just a guess.
By the way - is there only one Apple II, or two? I though I remember him first using one in the "living area" in the first episode this season. Or was he just using the one in the "lab"?
Just a few more ideas to add to the mix.
When the computer "timer" fails to be refreshed, perhaps
a) the island's biggest beast is released from his cage.
b) the bunker self-destructs to prevent unauthorized use/access.
c) the power generators are permanently shut down.
d) a human life must be sacrificed and "fed" to the island.
Tim

Yeah, I saw that, too. It was about the 40 min mark when Sawyer and Mike were on the raft at dawn. When you see Sawyer -- in the upper left of the frame is a boat. It's right before Sawyer says, "You okay, Mike."
Obviously it's difficult to film in Hawaii without something like this happening. It would have been very easy to edit out, however, if they wanted to. Doubt it was meant to be in the scene.
mx6bfast 10-03-05, 09:56 PM My only speculation on the numbers, the show will end on the 108th episode. I see this kinda like "24"
Just like the entire outside world is infected with some disease!
Well, subscribing to Agent Smith's theory from "The Matrix":
Agent Smith: I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species, I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area, and you multiply, and multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet, you are a plague, and we are the cure.
...Next we'll read about an ancient Greek philosopher that was named Hugo Hurley....
YOU'VE HEARD OF HIM TOO!!!!!

On a Tivo replay, frame by frame, did not see any boat there.
Ed
I haven't checked, but if it is the upper left of the widescreen HD frame, it may be cut off if you are watching the pan&scanned SD version on your tivo. Or are they broadcasting Lost now letterboxed in SD?
Remember the episode in the first season when they suddenly had to move their camp away from the beach because of the tide rushing in more quickly than normal?
I know it was written into the plot because the tide *Really* was rushing in during filming in Hawaii, but it at least jives with your theory.
The set was really moved from the beach because they couldn't keep all that airplane wreckage on a public beach for 2 years. I've been over there a few times. There's a great kitesurfing beach on that road, and some decent hiking trails at the road's end over to Kaena point. No trace of a set, except for a few lost Lost fans taking pictures. :D
On a Tivo replay, frame by frame, did not see any boat there.

Are you watching the HD/widescreen version?
Here's a downrezzed jpg of a screenshot, but the boat is still visible in the upper left corner.

I really have to use my imagination to see a boat there. I see the artifact in the picture and it is definitely a little higher than the rest of the horizon. But the fact that anyone actually saw that is amazing. And I thought I watched the show closely for details.

Like I said, that is a downrezzed, recompressed version of a screenshot because of attachment limitations on this forum. Obviously the people that think it's funny don't have it recorded in HD. It is very clear when playing it back. You can see the hull, mast, etc.
cyberbri 10-04-05, 02:25 PM Can you take a screenshot and crop it before it gets down-rezzed?
So, from the previews for this weeks' EP it seems we will be introduced to some new characters tomorrow (angry mob of homemade weapon wielding "others/tail-survivors" on the beach, etc). I wonder how many of them will be played by actors/actresses the audience may be familiar with (other than the one everybody already knows about anyway)?

What ever it is, this is probably the most likely reason. Lost has had a number of broken scenes that made it to TV, and this is a minor thing. Other scenes were much worse.
Ed
Ed Dixon 10-05-05, 10:58 AM What is more interesting are guesses as to what the long term for Lost will be. It appears to have become more successful than might have been expected.
S1 covered a lot of ground. We now have multiple groups on the island and some clear bad guys. It’s not so clear how long one can stretch out the current plot line.
One choice might be along the lines of Survivor or 24. After a season (or two) start a whole different plot with different characters in some new place/way.

Rakesh.S 10-05-05, 11:05 AM All I know at this point is that I'll be watching as long as they don't make a mess of it(see Alias, which just doesn't make any sense anymore)

They've got plenty to cover. They can fill over half the season covering tail survivor backstories and what they've gone through up to this point. They can add backstories of the front survivors with pre-island links to tail survivors.
Lots of ways to expand the scope of the plot without grossly accelerating the pace that the whole mystery is revealed.

Maybe, but currently only a small set of the survivors have speaking parts. The only new one in the last few shows was the science teacher, who blew him self up in the same show.
Back stories would get old without an overall plot. I'm guessing that S2 might end and S3 be a cast/plot change.

True, The Red Sox have choked in individual games before ( World Series of '46, '67, '75, '86, they lost in the 7th game. Plus they blew a lead in the one game playoff with the Yanks in '78).
But in '04 the Yanks had to choke 4 times in a row with a payroll just under $200 million in order to lose the ALCS.
Come to think of it, if you look at FOX re-runs of the game you can clearly see Hurley sitting by the Yanks dugout in games 4-7. Looks like the numbers at work. :-)

What matters most is when will we see the "obligatory" Kate in her underwear shot again? ;)
Personally, I thought the "crawling through the air duct" scene was hotter... :D

Hey, don't forget The great bean debate! (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5277184&highlight=bean#post5277184)

optivity 10-05-05, 08:02 PM Personally, I thought the "crawling through the air duct" scene was hotter... :D
~DanSure I enjoyed that too, and hopefully we'll see "a lot" more of that. :D
Can't wait until one of the female leads on LOST gets pregnant for real so they can work that into the script...and who's the daddy? Jack or Sawyer? :-)I can't shake the image in my mind of Jack and Sawyer fighting over who's the father! And just when it looks like Sawyer has gotten lucky and beaten Jack to death, Sayid shoots Sawyer in the shoulder - yes, the one still infected from the other bullet he dug out.
Now that's the kind of drama that makes me not care how many of the island's "secrets" are yet to be revealed. Bring it on!
Hey, it's already started on the East coast, hasn't it?
number9 10-05-05, 08:12 PM Wow did this thread get thrown off track. Sorry. I'll have to wait until Saturday night for the rebroadcast in HD. To make it even more insulting the game is being shown in SD!!!

If you were a Sox fan, you'd have vivid recollections of a number of much more significant "chokes" just in Sox history.
Cough, Bill, Cough, Buckner, Cough. ;)
Gecko85 10-05-05, 08:49 PM Cough, Bill, Cough, Buckner, Cough. ;)
Non RedSox fan here...but...
Buckner gets all the blame, but really, the coach should get all the blame (along with the rest of the team.)
Buckner had been hobbled by bum ankles all year. Dave Stapleton should have been inserted for defense...just like he had been all year when entering the final inning with the lead. But, Sox coach John McNamara wanted Buckner to be on the field for the final out...one that WOULD have been the Series winning out. Buckner could hardly move around at 1st base, yet McNamara kept him in. If Stapleton is in at 1st, Mookie is out and the Sox win the series. But, even with the loss, it was only game 6. The rest of the team contributed to losing game 7...and the series.

ok everything's sorta back to normal ;)
Wow! There was plenty in this episode for everyone, I would hope (esp. if you count the previews). So the "others" that have Jin & co. are actually the tail section people, as suspected. Pretty good trick by Anna. Wonder why they dug the pit? They seem to be very "warlike" compared to the other group; maybe they've already been attacked by the real others? Next week should be real interesting (seems like a lot of focus will be on the discovery of the bunker, food, weapons, etc).
Carl Holt 10-05-05, 10:05 PM I use to like this show but the number of commercials are killing me.

Yeah, I don't know if I would have done that. Too bad Walt was speaking backwards, or shannon could have passed that little tidbit on to the group. Not that they actually tell each other anything anyway :-)

CPanther95 10-05-05, 10:26 PM Sounds like 5 more stations are on the island.
ftboomer 10-05-05, 10:28 PM One of the site bunkers is studying Zoology and they show Polar Bears.
I wonder why they never showed the "normal" entrance to the bunker from outside (or did I miss something)? Must be relatively close to the beach and easy to find (once you know it's there), as Kate went out the door, found Sayid, and came straight back. Wonder why no-one ever saw it, or how it's disguised.
They still didn't answer the question of where that shiny new washer & dryer came from, and how he gets resupplied with food. Also, what's up with not showing what the front door to the bunker looks like?
If it were me down there, after a day or two of pushing the button every 108 minutes I would take my chances and be out of there.
Paul Bigelow 10-05-05, 10:31 PM 108 minutes * 5 = 540 minutes = 9 hours

dvdguru 10-05-05, 10:36 PM They'll meet up with Desmond again as there's only so far he can go. He'll probably get captured by the others at this rate as he's just running around the jungle like a madman. The other door to the hatch is being kept secret for now to tease us but I would imagine we'll see it next week when lots of the crash survivors come in the bunker to get food...
The look on Hurley's face in the food storage room was priceless LOL

No, I think the shark/bears are part of one area of study: zoology. This was mentioned in the film, which clearly said "3 of 5", so there are 5, not six bunkers or research areas on the island.
#3 / The Swan = electromagnetism
The other areas of study mentioned in the film were: psychology, parapsychology, zoology (I think). What is the 5th? Did they say? I'll have to go back and listen.

wmcbrine 10-05-05, 10:56 PM So the "others" that have Jin & co. are actually the tail section people, as suspected. Not necessarily. The captives suggested that, and she let them assume it, without answering; and she was there under false pretenses anyway, so even if she had validated it, why would you believe her? They did seem very ragged, though, in contrast to the boat crew that abducted Walt.
This was possibly my least favorite episode to date (not saying much for such a great show). Jack's behavior made no sense to me. I hope it's clarified later. Also, the original flashback where Locke met his father was genius, but when they revisited it here, I felt like they were beating a dead horse. (I kinda felt the same way about Michael's flashback last week: the subject had already been covered, elegantly, and no more was needed.)
dvdguru 10-05-05, 10:57 PM Too cool about that website. I love stuff like this and I hope someone finds some way to access some special feature on that site. Like maybe you have to enter "certain numbers" somewhere? ;)
Well this brings up some new questions:
1. If this Hanso Foundation is still supposedly active in 2005 - why is the island apparently in such disarray? Or is it only apparently in disarray? Is it possible that The Swan bunker actually is some sort of psychology experiment or something?
2. The Hanso bio mentions his company develops advanced NATO weaponry. Again giving us the possibility that the "monster" on the island is a very advanced weapons system, perhaps nanotech foglets.
Clearly the "active projects" page is tons of stuff the writers just haven't figured out yet. But it looks like they are setting the series up to cover a wide ranging set of sci-fi areas.
The "Mathematical Forecasting Initiative" may relate to the numbers.
CycloneGT 10-05-05, 10:59 PM Wasn't 'Helen' the name of the 900-line woman Locke kept calling?Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was.

I'd have to agree, especially regarding jack's behavior... So much for Man of Science right?
ftboomer 10-05-05, 11:05 PM Anyone know anything about "The Turn of the Screw"
Yeah, I was thinking Helen was her name, too. But I doubt it was really the same person, he probably just called her that. But who knows? Would be fun to go back sometime and listen to the voice and see if it sounds like Katey Segal.
I don't get why they need so many guns in there if this is just a research lab.
Is this bunker just designed to put people under max stress and see what happens when you give them guns?
Also as someone else said: where did the washer/dryer and recent food come from?
When asked about that, Desmond couldn't seem to come up with an answer.
Anyone know anything about "The Turn of the Screw"
There also was a brief flash of a book cover on Desmond's bunk I think - anyone catch what it was?

Try this,
Paul
dvdguru 10-05-05, 11:09 PM Jack's wigging out so much because he's being asked to take alot on faith. That's Locke's department, not Jack's. That plus seeing Desmond and all the other stress equals an unbalanced Jack ;)
Also as someone else said: where did the washer/dryer and recent food come from?
When asked about that, Desmond couldn't seem to come up with an answer.
Replying to myself - Desmond says he has been there around 3 years. Were those washer/dryers available around 3 years ago roughly?
Perhaps they were put in there right before Desmond got there (or was "placed" there if you believe he was purposely wrecked and put in there).
optivity 10-05-05, 11:18 PM The best line in tonight's episode was when Sawyer said: "the next time Shaft opens this cage up, I've got a little howdy doodie for him!" :D

It's pretty clear from Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje's (last time I type that - AAA from now on) comments to Anna-Lucia that they are the tail section survivors (as we all suspected).

The link is a null javascript, so it likely does nothing.
Here are the projects it lists:
The Hanso Life-Extension Project - Hmmm....cool
The Hanso Foundation Electromagnetic Research Initiative - Hence the bunker, likely explains all the crashes of planes/ships, etc. Question is does the island do this on it's own, or did Dharma find a way to enhance/channel the power?
The Hanso Quest for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence - OK jump the shark time, season 5 or 6?
The Hanso Mathematical Forecasting Initiative - Predicting the future via math?
The Hanso Cryogenics Development Imperative - Way cool...they have ELVIS!!!!
The Hanso Juxtapositional Eugenics Development Institute - CLONES!!!!!!
The Hanso Accelerated Remote Viewing Training Facility - Might explain everyone's visions.
There also was a brief flash of a book cover on Desmond's bunk I think - anyone catch what it was?

Looked it up:
The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien
Book Description
Fiction. The last of O'Brien's novels to be published and now reissued by Dalkey Archive, THE THIRD POLICEMAN is Flann O'Brien's brilliant comic novel about the nature of time, death, and existence. Told by a narrator who has committed a botche d robbery and brutal murder, the novel follows him and his adventures in a two-dimensional police station where he is intruduced to "Atomic Theory" and its relation to bicycles, the existence of eternity (which turns out to be just down the road), and the view that the earth is not round but "sausage-shaped."
Nice reading for a guy who is almost gone insane.
Dharma definitions from dictionary.com:
# Hinduism & Buddhism.
1. The principle or law that orders the universe.
2. Individual conduct in conformity with this principle.
3. The essential function or nature of a thing.
# Hinduism. Individual obligation with respect to caste, social custom, civil law, and sacred law.
# Buddhism.
1. The body of teachings expounded by the Buddha.
2. Knowledge of or duty to undertake conduct set forth by the Buddha as a way to enlightenment.
3. One of the basic, minute elements from which all things are made.
n : basic principles of the cosmos; also: an ancient sage in Hindu mythology worshipped as a god by some lower castes
I just hope he manages to get his kidney back from that pr*ck before he gets paralyzed.
With an ice cream scoop :-)
Namaste definition for those unfamiliar:
Definition: a bow and gesture of greeting or parting with the palms together in front of the chest; also, expressing respect through this gesture and bow
Etymology: Sanskrit `homage; bowing to you'
CPanther95 10-05-05, 11:55 PM and the view that the earth is not round but "sausage-shaped."
Sounds like some Freudian theory about how the whole world is out to screw you. ;)
The Hanso Foundation Electromagnetic Research Initiative - Hence the bunker, likely explains all the crashes of planes/ships, etc. Question is does the island do this on it's own, or did Dharma find a way to enhance/channel the power?
The film claims the island already had electromagnetic anomalies before they got there. Also this might explain how the Black Rock wrecked (although not how it got so far inland).

I wonder what Flann O'Brien was "shooting up" when he wrote that one
Wasn't 'Helen' the name of the 900-line woman Locke kept calling?
the flashbacks tonight were from BEFORE locke was paralyzed, & the flashbacks last season were AFTER. therefore, i think the fact that locke was calling the 900-line woman "helen" was just part of the "fantasy" that he was paying $8/minute for, trying to re-live the relationship that was over by that point.
In the previews - what was Jin holding? Some big yellow stuffed toy? Where's he at?
I'm guessing this is part of a flashback taken out of context, but my wife says she thinks he is "where the children are kept".
If it's a flashback, is it possible he was forced, as part of his mission, to memorize a few English phrases?
Personally, I thought the "crawling through the air duct" scene was hotter... :D
i disagree. i prefer the scene w/ her tied up, on the ground, squirming trying to get free, all sweaty.
Rewatched the film - the 5th area of study (first one mentioned) is meteorology.
I have to say after watching the film again, it reeks of being a classic psych experiment setup. As Jack said: they put you in here and write "quarantine" on the door to keep you in. It's all setup to keep someone in there under high pressure.
sayanythingrock 10-06-05, 12:48 AM man what an insane episode!
Ou8thisSN 10-06-05, 12:53 AM preview material: why do you suppose Jin was speaking perfect english?

Maybe someone having a dream?
There also was a brief flash of a book cover on Desmond's bunk I think - anyone catch what it was?
The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brien
There's an article about it and it's connection to Lost on the USAToday web site
http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2005-10-04-lost-literature_x.htm (http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2005-10-04-lost-literature_x.htm)
The article quotes Craig Wright, co-writer of tonight's episode as saying: "anyone familiar with the book will 'have a lot more ammunition' in dissecting Lost plotlines."
This (http://www.sff.net/people/richard.horton/thirdpol.htm) review of the book lists some interesting tidbits, such as "a mysterious trip to an underground cavern where anything you can imagine can be created."
I've already ordered a copy from Amazon...

Razvanel 10-06-05, 02:15 AM Dudes,
Lost is so bad - the dialogue is especially moronic - that it's funny, the best comedy on TV.

So is the guy that was guarding the pit one of the survivors from the back of the plane, or did whats-her-name just get on his good side?
Anybody notice how much deeper the pit appeared when Sawyer asked to be lifted up than after the girl was thrown in with them. In the after shot, the lid of the pit was within easy reach of Sawyer just standing on the ground.
That last 108 minutes sure must've flown by. I wonder what was happening during all the minutes we missed?
It was obvious that whole sections of the film had been spliced out. Anybody else think that those missing frames might be more significant than the ones that were there?
Tim
petergaryr 10-06-05, 06:36 AM I found it interesting that even on the film, they mentioned that "something had gone wrong" on the island.
At first I was thinking this was an experiment that had been started then forgotten, but as was mentioned on the show, "where's the food coming from?" Also, someone has to be paying the electric bill. So, it is all one big experimental lab and the "voices" are the observers?
