Actually, computers of that vintage (including that very computer) had modems, could get on the internet (yes, the internet...just because there was no "world wide web" doesn't mean there was no interenet), and could connect to other devices through several means. Serial port being one. I can hook my Apple II up to my PC via null modem cable and communicate all day long...

Actually, they couldn't, since there was no internet until 1991, Prior to that it was the ARPANET. Also before 1981 an RS-232 serial modem required a telephone line and an acoustic coupler in order to communicate. Both of these inventions postdate the 1980 date of the original project.

Could be Desmond repaired his boat a long time ago and couldn't leave because of the entering the numbers thing. He high-tailed it to his boat as quickly as possible in case something did happen. Even if nothing happened, he most likely won't be coming back, unless the island forces him back somehow. Brotha, Desmond's not going anywhere. The others are gonna catch his butt on the way out, skin and hang him out to dry for locking them out of the hatch/biosphere.

...the bunker would be irrevocably shut down if it was deemed to be abandoned (by not entering the sequence)...

AH! When the numbers AREN'T entered, it would be the conclusion of the experiment, wouldn't it? It would mean that Desmond either just quit, got smart and caught on, or, ahem, died. He most definitely was being monitored, but to what end? And the fate of the world certainly wasn't left in the hands of Desmond and companion with such casual instruction via the orientation video. Therefore, it makes no sense that NOT pressing the button would result in nuclear destruction or the blowing up of the world, folks.

For some reason it annoys me that Jack felt he had to push the button in spite of such a lack of information.
I think the lack of information was on the side of not pushing the button...

3. Actually On June 26, 1974, the first product with a bar code was scanned at a check-out counter. (http://www.adams1.com/pub/russadam/history.html)

It was about that time that I was visiting relatives up in the mountains of western PA (Indiana county) and experienced my first bar code scanning (at a supermarket). I remember being amazed that they had this new technology before we did here in NJ.

Exactly. And to be doing so in response to Locke's exortion to "take a leap of faith." It seems to me that a leap of faith for Jack would be to act upon his own conviction that nothing would happen if the button were not pushed. Especially since Locke's already proven that entering the right numbers and hitting Execute changes the counter back to 108. Where's the "leap of faith" in that?

After a great first year and a promising start of the second season it is sad to see that LOST was cancelled. Episode 3 of season two will be remembered as the episode that eventually brought and end to the once popular TV show. Episode 3 went too far in explaining the Island and doomed the show to a predictable story line so common to today’s Hollywood productions. LOST’s demise was predicated by the introduction of the Hatch in season one and the goal to open the hatch. Like all serials that have a goal, the goal is eventually obtained. In this case the goal was to open the Hatch.

The use of a goal in a story line sets the foundation for future events that, as time goes on, become less of a variable. Think of it as entering a delta of a great river and heading upstream. A delta contains a web of channels that can lead to dead ends or allow you to progressively move up stream. Eventually however, as you move upstream you end up in a single channel with no more choices on where to go but further upstream.

Episode three quickly stripped away the delta and forced the viewer into the main channel with no place to go but forward until you meet the headwaters and the river ends.

How do we know that the show is over?

1. We know that there a four other stations, one of which had an accident.
2. We know that one of the stations was a zoology station, hence the polar bears.
3. We know station 3 is the psychology station. The need to enter a code and push the button is a basic experiment to test human endurance. Hurley’s friend Leon from the home learned the code while serving on the island with a partner from Australia. This was revealed in Hurley’s back story when he met the wife of the partner and she stated that her husband was on a listening post on a remote island. That listening post was Station #3. Leon and his partner went quite mad from sleep deprivation and the fear of what may happen if they did not enter the code.
4. Orientation film 3 never states the consequence of not pushing the button. Since film three starts with a background to the project it is a stand-a-lone film, otherwise the background information would be on film one. The other films in the 5 film set are the orientations for the other stations, nothing more.
5. We know that the station that had the accident released a virus that effected the people on the island, making the sick or act strangely. The virus may be gone but it does not matter. It no longer influences the direction of the story.
6. The Others are the survivors of the stations, possibly second generation from the people who started the experiments and set up the island.
7. Desmond has a way off the island, he mentioned he was in a solar race. There will be a story line that has him killed off by the others to prevent him from revealing the existing of the island and possibly spreading whatever he is infected with. His solar plane still exists.
8. The people from the tail section of the plane are the warier tribe. The two tribes are the same as in Lord of the Flies.
9. The set has changed from Hawaii to mostly an indoor set. I would not be surprised to find out it is being filmed in studio 39, the indoor set used by several other shows, most notably the Star Trek series, for filming off-world landscapes. With the change in filming location we are starting to see more scenes filmed at the caves, in the trees near a shore, and in underground tunnels.
10. Moving all shows to an indoor studio also negates the impact of HD. HD is at its best with big scenes and plenty of light. It does add detail to darker scenes but the almost 3D effect is best with a lot of light. Since the show no longer offers the full appeal of HD, viewership will drop off.
11. Even with 40 people plus however may from the tail section the back stories will become limited and tedious. Even Chaucer ran out of stories for the Canterbury Tails, which, incidentally is the what gave the idea of the back stories.
13. We will eventually learn how Jacks wife died and how Locke lost the use of his legs.
14. With so much now known there are very few things that can the spark back in to the show.
15. Next goal, find Walt. It will happen, it has to happen or people will start to complain about how long it is taking. Look to history, in Kung-Fu Grasshopper eventually found his brother. How many of the shows do you remember after the brother was found? I cannot tell you, I barely made it to find the brother before changing to some other show.
16. Goal – Bring the two tribes together. This will happen in a couple of weeks. Of course there will be a leadership conflict. Of course Jack will have to face the girl from row 49. They will throw in some love triangle twist with Kate for this. The row 49 girl eventually dies to preserve the relationship with Kate. What? You think Sawyer and Kate wind up together?
17. Locke has been rendered a useless character. His back story shows that he crashed in burned in a big way, most likely the Anger Management dies in the same accident that Locke looses the use of his legs in. Locke had such promise now he is some fanatic that believes the Island is testing him. What can happen next to him? He is on an Island, he is worshipping a thing, he will find it is a false god. What does he do then say, “what a fool am I?” His story is effectively over.
18. Sied fixed an Apply Computer. He can fix anything. Good for him, he is the Professor.
19. If they really want to get the attention of people off the island why not cut the power cable that Sied found? Then search the perimeter of the island and cut all the other power lines.
20. The Hobbit will have his relapse into drug addiction. The formerly pregnant girl will leave him then come back and save him.
21. Kate? Kate is now window dressing used to further conflict between Jack and Sawyer. She has no other purpose.
22. Likewise the spacey blond girl. She no longer has a purpose.

Unfortunately Hollywood lacks the capacity to be creative all the time and eventually falls back on tired story lines with limited characters. The tracks have been set and LOST is destined to be off the air by the end of season four. Season three will start with new characters but the story line will quickly revert to variant of what we see now. By the end of season three the primary viewership will disappear. Season four will start with a final gasp with even more new characters. By the end of season four most people will not even remember the show exists. They’ll ask, “what ever happened to LOST? I use to like that show.”

It is too bad that the directors and writers could not keep up the multi-character setting and had to tie the entire series into the lives of basically two characters, neither of which are strong.

So it is with heavy heart that I announce the end of LOST. If you do not believe me put this post into your Favorites and re-read it next year. You’ll see, it is destiny.

sorry if this has been covered, but:

how long has desmond been doing this? since his partner died, he's the only one punching in the numbers every 108 minutes. this means he simply cannot get any decent sleep. i don't know much about sleep physiology, but humans don't just take little cat naps; we need extended periods of sleep. at some point, desmond would have had to sleep through the alarm out of sheer exhaustion. at any rate, he should be insane, or a lot more insane (if he's telling the truth)

now we saw him injecting himself with something, but i don't think there's any known thing you can take that can keep you going like desmond has. but this being scifi...

People have been mentioning Locke's "father" as the one with his kidney. I just want to get clarification - this isn't his biological father - it is just a guy who needed a kidney and suckered Locke into thinking he was indeed his father, right?

Wrong ... the guy is his biological father ... he's just a royal S.

Now, Locke may just be a bit off, but didn't it seem he thought he knew more about the situation, with the "It wasn't supposed to happen this way?" He still is the only one who saw the "eye of the island" that was "beautiful".

Also, in his previous life, Locke had a meaningless job. Now he gets to save the world every 108 minutes.

In his previous life, Jack was obsessed with saving people. Now he gets to save the world every 108 minutes.

In his previous life, Sayid loved Nadia who is somewhere in the world. Now he gets to save her (and the rest of the world) every 108 minutes.

Desmond also commented that the wheel (or whatever he called it) sometimes sticks. Doesn't this indicate that he has at least used the wheel to unlock the door, even if he has not used it?

Sorry if mentioned already,

But it does seem odd that the project engineers didn't code a script to automate this required sequence input every 108 minutes. If that was something they could have done with that vintage computer, the fact that they designed the system to require human interaction instead, must have some significance.

Yes, and it's called a dead man's switch. If the operator(s) are dead, the numbers aren't entered, and the self-destruct (or whatever) happens. Trains have them too, so if the engineer dies the train shuts off.

On modern locomotives, this is now called an "alerter," which starts beeping every 3 to 5 minutes (unless throttle or brake have been recently adjusted) and has to be reset or your train is brought to a stop. It's specifically designed to keep you awake...no injections of elixer 4-8151623-42 are allowed...

Great episode.

1) Still want to know what the meds are that Desmond grabbed and took with him before he fled.
2) Fixing an Apple II that's been shot? A little bit of a stretch to buy.
3) The "Monster" Magnetically controlled?
4) Hurley. Going to love the warehouse of food.
5) JIN SPEAKS ENGLISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did I see the preview correctly?
6) If station 3 is the "Swan" then we know that the sharks from Ep 2 must come from a different "station" since their logo didn't have a Swan but a straight line in the logo.

I once was in an AT&T management training workshop where, at the beginning, we were given an envelop and told "not to open it". We then had a series of management decision exercises to do. The only way to complete the final task was to have information we didn't have (which was contained in the envelop).

Nobody in the group suggested opening the envelop to see what was in it because some "authority figure" (the facilitator) said not to. The point of the exercise was to see how far we would go to solve a problem, up to and including violating a "rule"---"Don't open the envelop".

I've DONE that class!!

how do we know this? Do we really know that he is his father. All we know, is that their blood type/kidneys match. Locke could simply be the "universal donor" or sorts, I think that is 0? Maybe the mother simply sold him out to a guy who gave her a lot of money.

In last nights episode, the FATHER simply said, "you needed a father figure", not that he was his father.

I think in a future episode, we will find that this guy kills Locke's current girlfriend, since he CERTAINLY wouldn't kill John. L, what with him having a second kidney to give still! :-)

How many of you think we are going to see Hurley in a food coma in episode 4, and going crazy in episode 5, when all the people start to come to bunker and find all the FOOD he has found! :-)

I can't believe more people aren't talking about this... They ARE the same people, they have to be. There's no way there'd be a coincidence that great, and that important, for the writers to just throw it in there for no reason. So the original students on this project are still on the island, and they've captured Walt specifically for some reason. What could that be?

This is a huge breakthrough, that the two people who started this whole thing 20-some years ago are still there, they never left, and they want Walt. Now of Walt's "powers" to make things happen just by basically thinking about them, which station would be studying things like that?

My take on the Hanso project on the island:

The Hanso Life-Extension Project

The Hanso Foundation Electromagnetic Research Initiative: explains how the compasses and GPS on planes boats and compasses themselves are being thrown off, making them point to the island

The Hanso Quest for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence: the ghosts/wind going around the island

The Hanso Mathematical Forecasting Initiative: 4+8+15+16+23+42=108

The Hanso Cryogenics Development Imperative: the need to steal the body of Jack's dad out of the coffin ?

The Hanso Juxtapositional Eugenics Development Institute: what caused Ethan to get so strong ?

The Hanso Accelerated Remote Viewing Training Facility: all the mirrors possibly cameras in the lab

It's possible, but really - how many psych scientists do you see running around with firebombs and blowing up rafts?

They seemed a wee bit violent for scientists.

Possibility: they were just actors in the orientation film scam.

So someone on another forum I frequent (a golf forum mind you) tried to find a secure version of thehansofoundation.org and came up with one. It just has a text message "bigspaceship1.com" That url is a page is titled with morse code that supposedly translates to "HELP ME, OBI-WAN KENOBI YOU'RE MY ONLY HOPE" There is a dharmaindustries.com site as well.

Those don't appear to be domain names owned by ABC Television like the original one is. Most likely they are fan sites of some sort, and shouldn't be taken as part of the show.

Both were created much more recently - one just in the last 24 hrs.

Some of these books seem like scene breakers. Some have been published in last two years, so how did they get on the shelf?
I looked, but didn't notice anything that wasn't available before 2001 or so...notice most were hardbound editions, not later-released paperbacks.

Also, Desmond managed to rescue, off his boat that broke up on the reef, the photograph of he and his girl...it's possible that he had this and some books in a waterproof duffle bag that he managed to drag to shore with him.

And, judging by the supplies, full "medicine" chest, and washer/dryer, it looks like some form of resupply has had to occurred, probably just before Desmond arrived and while Kelvin still had a partner (Ethan?)

If there was newer stuff there, then the underground cavern in The Third Policeman may offer significant clues...

this website was registered just this JULY 2005, by ABC of Burbank, CA.

No mystic magic there.
No, but the fact that the Orientation video is on the site today, but wasn't yesterday, means that the producers are messing with our heads in real time!

I love it that Lost is becoming more of a multi-dimensional experience (or another DHARMA experiment) than just a passive TV show...

Something else to consider:

How did Kelvin know Desmond had arrived on the island?

If he was by himself, how did he have time to be walking around the island looking for people all day?

Or alternately was he in on the experiment, and already knew that they were going to cause Desmond to wreck and arrive on the island?

Actually, they couldn't, since there was no internet until 1991, Prior to that it was the ARPANET. Also before 1981 an RS-232 serial modem required a telephone line and an acoustic coupler in order to communicate. Both of these inventions postdate the 1980 date of the original project.

Original poster said vintage computers didn't have communication capabilities.

I was pointing out the multitude of communication possibilities. Correct about ARPANET, but that's still a 'net. I said that modems were available, and they were. I didn't say they were USING a modem...In any event, there's nothing that says it has to have an outside connection. Who's to say it's not simply controlling the other (larger) computers in the room? Or, something somewhere else on the island? Serial cable would take care of that. Bottom line is: the computer shown is more than capable of controlling another device, as we're lead to believe it's doing...Whether or not it actually IS, or it's just an elaborate experiment, is up to the writers...

This post was full of inaccuracies, but let me debunk at least this one -- Lost is still filming in Hawaii and mostly on location, as documented in approximately, oh, a thousand or so magazine and newspaper articles published in the past couple of months. The production has not moved to Los Angeles.

(As to why anyone would think a Touchstone/Bad Robot production would be filmed over at the Paramount lot where the Star Trek stages (not "studios") are located, I have no idea. Disney has perfectly nice stages of its own.)

No :) Jack is the man of science. He firmly believes that absolutely nothing will happen if the button isn't pressed. He repeats this several times. It's his encounter with Desmond, and the reminder of what happened with Sarah, that leads Jack to accept that there might be more going on than it seems. For him, the "leap of faith" is accepting this and pushing the button. Refusing to push the button was his initial instinct based on logic and science.

Of course if he (Jack) really believes that the button has no purpose, then there is nothing at stake in pushing the button (or not pushing the button) - the outcome will be the same either way :) It's a completely rational decision.

Whitearrow
10-07-05, 01:29 PM
I think Jack's knee-jerk reaction as "man of science" is that it's utterly *absurd* that not resetting the clock would end the world. Yes, a logical fallback is to maintain status quo, but doing so accepts the premise that there might be something to it in the first place. So it really is a leap of faith for Jack to even go that far.

JeffAtlanta
10-07-05, 01:31 PM
No :) Jack is the man of science. He firmly believes that absolutely nothing will happen if the button isn't pressed.
Why would a "man of science" have a problem accepting that pressing a button can result in some sort of action? The guy is a doctor and presses buttons all the time on medical machinery.

Even if he doubts that pressing the button will save the world, it is obviously a dead man's switch and could easily trigger a self destruction of the bunker. The bunker is there and Jack has been inside - it is not clear why Jack feels that the machinery is totally inert. Why not just press the button for a few cycles until you find out for sure?

Whitearrow
10-07-05, 01:39 PM
Okay :) Just trying to explain why Jack's reaction made sense to me. If it doesn't to you, that's fine too.

Jack had also just seen the film referencing BF Skinner. I'm sure he had at least a basic psych course in college and was aware of the nature of Skinner's conditioning experiments -- which also probably led him to the conclusion that nothing at all would happen, and it was all an experiment. And I think he'd had enough of Locke's "destiny" stuff and wanted to prove him completely wrong... until his encounter with Desmond forced him to reconsider and take the leap of faith.

tluxon

I'd have to rewatch the episode to be sure, but I thought Desmond told Jack that Kelvin almost immediately "found him, and brought him into the bunker/station".

Again, implying Kelvin either knew he was coming, or had some way to surveil the island.

You really need a DVR that can timeshift. With one of those, you just start watching Lost 15-20 minutes after it starts and click right over every commercial. This is definitely one show where commercial breaks mess up the experience.

Thank you, at least someone else noticed the high number of commercials.

My goal was to watch it in HD but, unfortunately i cannot afford an HD DVR. HD is a big selling point of the show. I do have a Tivo but then I'm limited to non-HD.

So the choice is HD in real time a suffer with the commercials or Watch on Tivo on the little screen.

Starting Lost 15-20 minutes late so I can skip the commercials is a good indication of the number of commercials.

"Remote Viewing" is a branch of parapsychology/psychic/telepathy study, not optics...

~Dan
Correct. Anyone who wants to see what it's about and be entertained at the same time might want to watch Suspect Zero that I mentioned earlier. Remote viewing in Lost could be being used in the way Walt appeared to Shannon and Jack's father appeared to Jack. There are probably other instances that I don't recall, and the way it's being shown is not the textbook method, it's more a graphic way of showing what's happening. Sort of from the point of view of the one being viewed instead of the viewers point of view. (sounds confusing, but read it a couple of times and it makes sense.. :D )

I'm also starting to lean towards the execute button pressing as an experiment in human behavior and that nothing will happen if it isn't pressed. I would still investigate more before neglecting to press the button though.

Also, you have to wonder about the timing since the computer was without power for what, an hour or so, that the linkage between what is supposed to "happen" and when it would really "happen" would be off, it would be hard to imagine that the computer had a way of resetting it's clock to the current time.

Dan:

I think you missed the point. The whole dialog is a comment about the entertainment industry in general. I'm sure you have noticed it.

When was the last time you actually saw a show or a movie where you came away thinking, "now that is a new concept." Unfortuantely the production industry has a formula in mind when they create a show and as time goes on the formula takes over and it becomes the same as just about everything else.

Lost started with a great pretence, not original mind you but a good concept. The directors and writters though have already gone stale. You can see it while watching. You cannot seriously tell me you don't already know the basics of what will happen next. Sure they can up in some plots twists but underneither you know what is going to happen.

The challage they have now is to change the formula so you trully do not know what is going to happen. That is the only way to keep the show unique. It not, then my prediction for three years form now will be very true.

The basic concept is that the show is moving indoors. This has been also talked about in the rags you mentioned. It has the potential of becoming yet another show with people running down dark corridores.

To keep the impact of HD it needs to be moved back into the open. Not for part of the story but the whole thing.

The rags have even said that due to environmental concerns for the on site location and production costs that the producers are considering moving the location to another set.

The computer isn't the clock. The clock is separate. The computer just controlls whatever happens once the button is pressed. The countdown clock could have battery backup, or could be run off the backup power in case of power outtage.

I'd have definitely hit the button - at least until I had a chance to thoroughly investigate the bunker and any official materials present. Even if you don't believe you are "saving the world" it wouldn't be too hard to accept the possibility that the bunker would be irrevocably shut down if it was deemed to be abandoned (by not entering the sequence). This is the only hope of contacting the outside world at this point - why take a chance.

Conversely, not hitting the button might trigger an alarm sequence that notifies the outside world that there is a problem on the island and help should be sent. What if, by continuing to enter the sequence on schedule, Desmond has been sending a confirmation message back to Dharma headquarters that, "Everything's fine here. Don't bother to stop by"? How would that be for irony?

What are the other shows with people running down dark corridors? "Yet another" leads one to believe there's a glut of dark corridor/running shows around.

And I disagree with needing to move outdoors to "keep the impact of HD." For one thing, the indoor scenes look GREAT in HD on my set. Second, the idea of choosing sets (indoor vs. outdoor) for a show, just because some viewers like to see green and blue on their HDTV's is just silly.

It not, then my prediction for three years form now will be very true.I'm not so sure they have to change any "formula" if they've managed to draw in so many viewers. Reading the comments of one of the writers linked to earlier in this thread, it's apparent that they're only looking out a few more seasons anyway before all the "secrets" of the island are revealed. It seems that there's still a lot of room for the story to line diverge from it's present path if they want to stretch it out longer.

I think that for the most part, the exact opposite is true. Lost, unlike most shows, is not sticking to a single simple formula, but is evolving from week to week. I see that as a good sign, not a bad one.

Since only a tiny percentage of viewers have HD, I doubt that has much to do with anything in their planning. What is involved is viewer ship, which remains high and generally in the top 5 for each week.

Lost started as a simple stranded survivors story. It now has a number of other parts, including related back stories, on island weirdness, misc bad guys, and hints at any number of other things. Where it will go seems somewhat open at present. It does seem like a somewhat darker set of plot lines is coming in the near future.

I’m not sure how far in the future they film, but I don’t think it is a whole season at a time. I’m guessing is some number of episodes, and perhaps future ones are influenced by viewer feedback.

But the clock kept counting down while the power was out, so presumably, the "destruct" system is on backup power.

I suspect the equipment with Das Blinkenlights, hooked to the two 9-track tape drives, is the minicomputer running things, and the Apple II only functions as a dumb terminal (which would also explain the latency between keypresses and their appearance on the screen)...

He'll probably completely lose it when he finds out Locke was paralyzed, but miraculously recovered—same as Sarah...

I agree - the "Man of Science" response should be that it can't hurt to press the button - "let's not do anything radical or out of the norm until we get more facts or info"
Right. The Man of Science would say, "OK, that button has been pushed every 108 min. or so for the last few years and everything's been maintained, or, at least the clock is reset and nothing disastrous happens." That's been proven. He may logically and reasonably believe that not pushing the button will have no effect, but, since so far it hasn't been tried, there is no definitive proof of that. So to act upon his conviction and not push the button is the leap of faith, since faith is to act on one's beliefs where there is no proof.

That's my interpretation and I'm sticking with it. :p

The use of a goal in a story line sets the foundation for future events that, as time goes on, become less of a variable. Episode three quickly stripped away the delta and forced the viewer into the main channel with no place to go but forward until you meet the headwaters and the river ends.
How long do you want the show to go on, anyway? It is a serial psycho/mystery, it puts forth both clues and misdirections, in a very sucessful attempt to seduce us. It ain't the Dick Van Dyke show (no disrespect intended towards a television icon), It is supposed to eventually answer the questions it makes us ask. As time goes on. You have unfortunately missed the whole point of the production.

So it is with heavy heart that I announce the end of LOST. If you do not believe me put this post into your Favorites and re-read it next year. You’ll see, it is destiny.
Anyone else see the irony of someone bemoaning predictability, while proudly making two year deep predictions of his own???

not sure if this is off topic or not but the previously mentioned website, http://www.bigspaceship1.com/
which is supposed to have the reverse DNS Ip address to the
http://www.thehansofoundation.org/
also mentioned earlier, has had a strange change for me after listening to it 3 times the song changed to a very weird message from Peter Cotton Tail! Yes thats right. Then it counts off some sort of code at the end. Which is a series of approx. 87 numbers then repeats. ALl of the numbers are below 26 so I'll assume they represent letters of the alphabet, but I cant figure it out.

If we're all going to be losers and try to decode, we should make sure we're working on the same numbers. This is what I found (86, not 87, but I could have missed one). I tried all combinations of letters in order (A=1, A=2, etc.) but couldn't find anything that made sense in a linear manner. I did not listen to the message - that was a lot harder for me to hear than the numbers so there may be more clues there.

Or is this something for the spoilers thread? Also, has anyone solved Marvin Candle for an anagram?

I think there is little chance of that. This is TV, and TV is about viewer ship. Anything they can do that inspires interest usually inspires more viewers, which translates into more $. With 18 minutes of commercials per hour, I don't think they are going to send viewers out to movie theaters.

12 2 7 12 18 18 14 1 8 4 18 12 6 14 14 5 20 1 12 18 5 8 21 4 2 2 7 8 8 22 14 20 12 9 19 19 5 8 18 14 8 12 4 12 ...it goes well beyond this.

Actually, when Desmond asked, Locke told him there were 43 of them and 4 left on a raft. If you stop counting Walt because he's not with them right now, I guess you have your 42.

On another track, didn't the orientation film say that Desmond's bunker was station 3 of 5? As improbable as even one bunker seems, I wonder if there might be more bunkers (4?) on the island. As unwieldy as it would seemingly make the story line, I suppose that could mean there are other occupants waiting for "replacements".

Also, did anybody else notice that when Locke entered the numbers, he didn't hit the space bar at all, yet spaces were inserted between the spoken numbers. An Apple 2 wouldn't do that unless it was running a program that automatically inserted these spaces in appropriate positions or after each correctly entered number. Just thought that was curious.

I am not sure but I think this is what is happening with the newer websites you guys have been looking at...

http://www.thehansofoundation.org/ is a legit ABC run site that is affiliated and created for the show LOST.

The site is hosted on a single server, running as a virtual host. This means that SEVERAL sites all share the same IP address, and the apache or other WWW server software can route the web viewer to a certain directory based on the requested URL.

It appears that someone running the server or hosting provider decided to have some fun and forward all requests for the IP to the domain bigspaceship1.com. This can all be done in a config file on the web server.

Also, when you put in the secure version of the URL https for https://www.thehansofoundation.org the webserver software interprets the secure request on a different port and can route the user to any other address or webpage.

So to put it simply, www.thehansofoundation.org is legit as far as its connection to the TV show lost.... but the other two sites are just computer geeks screwing around with people.

I have been trying to decide whether or not the island security system with the apple computer and the count down from 108 is just a psychological experiment or not, and I think it definitely could be.

However, one idea I came up with for a possible repercussion if the sequence is not entered within 108 minutes is this...

What if the island's security system is designed to keep people ON the Island. This would also possibly go along with the whole quarantine sign on the inside of the hatch, the sharks in the water, the magnetic machine, and maybe as a last resort the inventors of the experiment coming to get you and blow up your make shift raft with a bomb. (see picture (http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/6990/thedegroots1jy.jpg) ) There seem to be several systems set up to prevent the people being experimented on from leaving the island.

So maybe the designers of the experiment found out exactly how long it would take someone to get from the hatch to the shore (108 minutes or more) and if the subjects of the experiment were not present to punch in the sequence, the security system would turn on.

Maybe the security system is the magnetic field generator? Maybe if anyone were to try and escape by a boat or aircraft the magnetic device would prevent them from being able to leave?

Of course if there actually were two people in the bunker they could team up to allow one person to attempt to leave but then the other would be stuck alone to fend for himself for the rest of his days. Maybe that is part of the experiment? To see if one person is willing to sacrifice their life in order to allow another person to be free?

thanks for reminding me. not sure if this has been mentioned, this thread moves way too quickly, in the season 2 opener, you see desmond wake up, get out of bed, sit down on a chair which seems to be in or just outside his room, roll on it to the computer, and type in the numbers (while pressing the space bar in between numbers by the way). now from what i can gather from what we've seen on the hatch, his bedroom is not in line with the dome with the computer for him to slide from the bedroom into the dome. also when he's typing in the numbers in the season 2 opener, the room is alot brighter than how it is in the dome.

I did notice that in ep. 2 when he was forcing Locke to enter the numbers--no spacebar. Just thought it was a mess-up with procedural continuity and/or "artistic licence" but didn't really have any significance to the story line. But with this show who knows.

Over on HTF, someone noted that the crashed plane flight 815 had a symbol on it that looked like the Dharma logo, although it's somewhat cut off. I am not sure if anyone has posted this here before or not. If not, what do you think?

Can anyone verify that's not Photoshopped? Looks hinkey.

It could also tell a military base that the quarantine has been breached and it's time to nuke the island :-)

Well the man has been shot, lost at sea, attacked by sharks, and paddled to the shore of the island. Then beat up, tossed in a pit, and sucker punched.

At that price point just go with DirecTV. You can get an HD Tivo for about $400 when you sign up. Plus they'll upgrade you to their newer HD box when it comes out (next year I think).

I currently use Comcast and pay $15/mo for HD and the DVR, so that's another way to go, albeit more expensive long term.

But it will cost you subscription and monthly PVR costs, DRM (no backups when your hard drive overflows), and no hard drive upgrades. Also, if you decide you want an additional HD tuner, a FusionHDTV ($100) gives you a second in the same PC.

Actually, he says "Namaste" (na-MAH-stay), not namasate (na-muh-SAH-tay)... which, googling the word, loosely means "I bow to you"... so its kind of a greeting, but also seems to mean, in the sense of Lost, sort of a "good luck to you".

It just occurred to me (perhaps mentioned before?) that the Lost numbers (4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42) may be an IP address (481.516.234.2 - I don't know if this is a valid range or not)

Perhaps someone smarter than me can change their IP address to that sequence and see if that unlocks the dharmaindustries.com site.

Lastly, didn't the Orientation film mention Amsterdam? Isn't that where Walt's mom took him?

Hong.Well, another resemblance is that there are three concentric octagons. I wouldn't jump to conclusions about whether it's close enough or not. We haven't seen enough of these logos to determine what must match in order to make it a Dharma logo. Maybe the solid-line octagons correspond to the sky and the dashed-line octagons to the earth, etc.

Whether it's a Dharma logo or not, it's still an interesting coincidence that they involve three concentric octagons.

A note I wanted to make about the washer/dryer. So it looks like a big product placement to me and we aren't supposed to be thinking about how something so new got in the hatch.

Anyone thought that Helen may be the 900 # girl and Locke keeps calling her there so she has to talk to him after they are broke up, or maybe she dies as a result of Locke refusing to stop going outside his father's house and thats why he was crying after they showed the flashback story with her in it.

http://www.bigspaceship1.com/ is now showing 2 polar bears floating back and forth across the screen.

Jin speaking English I am 100% positive was not a Daniel De Kim promo. He's not even looking at the camera when it happens. Its either a flashback/dream or maybe there is some link between him and the Hanzo video guy too since he is also Asian. Perhaps some kind of experiments they are conducting like nazis.

He's still beaten up from his tussle with the Tail Section folks, so I think it takes place in the present. After rewatching the ep and upcoming previews on Saturday, I was thinking that the way the producers seem to revel in all the viewer searching, hidden eggs and twists, I'm not so sure that they wouldn't purposely slip a non-preview sound bite in there just to screw with everybody you know? Just to sprout a bunch of pages of posts on web sites all over the net. Kind of the ultimate red herring. It could simply be a little clip from an interview shot in between takes or after they got done shooting scenes and before he got out of makeup. IIRC he says something along the lines of "Everything's going to change". Taken out of the context of the show itself, that could very easily be part of a response to questions about where the season was going to be heading for instance.

Edit: And if he were doing an interview he would be looking at the interviewer (off screen) not the camera like a promo...

I think that I have figured out LOST!

Last week’s episode finally gave me the final missing clues.

1. It has been mentioned more than once by the survivors that “we should not have survived the crash”. Which is true … it would have been impossible to survive a plane breaking apart in the air and crashing! The point is that they did not survive a plane crash ... because it did not happen! All the “passengers” were hypnotized (or something similar) in to believing that they had been in one. Props of a “crash” were set up on the island to re-enforce this.
2. All the "passengers" are all part of a university psychological experiment/study, Most likely it is Columbia University where Jack played football and studied economics. I believe each of the “passengers” was carefully selected for the study. They are continuous submitted to crises to see how they will react. Examples
a. The monster in the jungle.
b. The abductions.
c. Several staged deaths (there have been a few plants to staged these fake deaths)
3. Does the island even really exist, or is it just a elaborate sound stage? Everything certainly could be controlled better on a sound stage.
4. I also think that there is a chance that John Locke is some how directly involved with experiment. He is just too calm at times. For example, when confronted with the monster in the jungle he remained calm because he knew it would not actually hurt him. I believe his role is to help calm some of the subjects at times (so they will not over react and kill each other!); and to direct them in certain directions as the experiment dictates. For example, he purposely led them to the underground facility.
5. Who are the “others”? They are the other groups that have become “marooned” on the island as a result of ”shipwrecks”, “plane crashes” and other calamities that never actually occurred. These people were also hypnotized into believing. The experiment has reached the stage were these groups will start interacting with each other.
6. What about the button? If they continue to press it the experiment will continue until the researchers feel the experiment has run its course. However, if they fail to push the button the experiment will end immediately! Desmond is on of the researchers. He was there just to get the “passengers” to push the button. He has left the “island”.

I am anxious to see how my theory works out!

I have to sneak this in quick while I'm caught up! Bob, I think you are very close to the solution. I have been thinking about the possibility that the crash was psychologically induced. After all, we have seen very little of the crash. The only flaw I'm finding is the guy that was sucked into the running engine in the opening episode.

Also, I don't know for sure but I thought that the training film canister was labeled as #3 of 6 but the presenter in the film said that this was site #3 of 5. Either I'm mistaken or maybe the missing station was the one which experienced the "accident"

I have also noticed that most of the key suvivors have been hospitalized/institutionalized in the past. This leads me to a thought that Locke was never really physically paralyzed, maybe his paralysis was a form of psychosis brought on by his father/kidney/psycho mom/Peg Bundy girlfriend.

Must quit reading this thread, brain starting to hurt!

Taking the psychological testing angle to an extreme. What if Locke still has both of his kidneys and the surgery was just a cover for an implant that will cause his paralysis. The implant could then be shut off to allow use of his legs while on the island. If part of the test is to determine just how much faith an individual can have, regaining use of your legs would sway you towards belief. Just tell me to go away if you all think that this is just to far fetched.

Taking this implant idea out a little further. What if those who are watching the "experiment" felt that Locke and Boone were getting a little to close to finding something and caused the paralysis to start coming back. Or they wanted to convince him that he belonged on the island since he was "special" and has a purpose. So you think you can leave do you Mr. Locke, well then try this on for size....zap! So did they 'fake' the Marshal having a piece of shrapnel in his gut and bleeding like a pig and dying? Sawyer's shooting him? Or Rose's heart stopping and Jack resuscitating her?

There are a lot of holes here.

It would be extremely difficult to get nearly 42 people to all believe the same incident happened when it did not.

How do you explain the real deaths of:

The passenger in the beginning who was sucked into the jet engine.

The marshall: Jack is a doctor and he saw him die. Didn't they bury him?

Boone: Jack tried to save him and could not. They buried him, right?

Ethan: Charlie shot him and they buried him, too.

Artz: Was blown up right in front of Hurley, Jack, Kate and Locke.
I'm thinking he really died, if he was in a million bits.

With a doctor as part of the survivors it would be impossible to stage any of these deaths. Are you saying Jack is a plant?

No, the plane crash was real and there is something else going on.
We will see what it is eventually.

Just a fanboy site - not really sure of the point, or the interest in it.

Because, if something is even remotely connected to LOST it must have hidden meaning and mysterious clues.

Did anyone catch the promos they ran during the college games on sat. I have the ESPN game plan and was flipping around to different games and one was an ABC feed. They played a promo that looked like Mike, Jin and Sawyer were being led down a long tunnel by the other survivors. It definitely showed different scenes then the promo after last weeks show. I only saw this promo once during the game so it was kind of strange.
