bitterfly 11-25-05, 11:11 AM Thought it was "1 Adam 12".(?)
It was infact 8.adam.16 as vegggas said.
Shame it wasn't 8.adam.18 because 8=h and 18=r and those 6 letters would have spelled Dharma if re-arranged.
Is that some connection to "Adam 12?" Their car was "4 Adam 12".Thought it was "1 Adam 12".(?)
Yes, it was 1 Adam 12...
1 = Central Division
Adam = Two-officer patrol car
12 = Car number
The Division 8 in 8 Adam 16 is West Los Angeles

YIKES!!!
Robert Clark 11-25-05, 03:06 PM just realized something... AL works with/under her mother the same way Jack works with/under his father. Bet they'll be using that in a plot line sometime.
One constant in the backstories in LOST is the recurring theme of bad/evil parents/step-parents of the Islanders.
tdtobat 11-25-05, 03:29 PM Sortof already been answered but perhaps not completely. Locke's crossword clue was for 42 down and read "Enkidu's friend". The correct answer he wrote in the puzzle was "Gilgamesh".
I like the 42 down bit to go with the numbers but a 9 clue answer. Why not 8 or something that continues the rabid need for some to see all the writers tricks.

Ahh yes...it was 1 Adam 12. I guess I'm older than I thought I was!
couple notes:
1. It was "the baby" & "the kids" that drove AL into a rages during the flashbacks.
2. Sayid's over-reaction to learning Walt's fate from Michael implicates he's become aware of the true motivation of "the others".

1. Yes...She's gonna love Claire's baby... BLAM! BLAM! BLAM!
2. I got the same feeling. He realized that the Others wanted Walt, not Claire's baby—and that there's more afoot than meets the eye...

Someone needs to post a screencap of Locke's crossword puzzle. You just know that thing's riddled with clues.
Down rezzed (I lost my recording and this was what I got), converted to JPG (to get around filesize limitations), and unfortunately cropped (to get around image dimension limitations).
I could have sworn I've seen people post larger images both filesize and resolution wise. Was it just with remotely hosted images?
So what word(s) would be made by putting in the correct letters for the "across" words? I couldn't come up with anything meaningful. (spri _ _ ace)

CHeck out this text:
This is a verse text of the Gilgamesh epic by Robert Temple (1991). Tablet V tells of when Enkidu and Gilamesh enter the great forest and encounter Humbaba (see the image above). Because it's less familiar than many other portions, I'm going to excerpt parts of it and add my brief comments:
They stood quite still and looked at the forest,
Saw how high were the great cedars,
And gazed upon the entrance to the forest.
There, where Humbaba was wont to tread,
Was a fine path; straight it was and easy to travel.
They saw also the Cedar Mountain, where lived the gods
And Irnini, Goddess of Love, holy Inanna had her throne seat
The cedar raised aloft its great luxuriant growth:
What cool shade, what delight! .....
The two enter the forest and later bed down for the night. Gilgamesh has a series of nightmares; each time he shares a dream with Enkidu, the later perverts the dream's meaning:
'A second dream I saw:
We were standing in mountain gorges
And a mountain fell upon us.
It was so large that by comparison
We were like small reed flies -
Like the little fly of the cane-brakes we were.'
He who was born on the steppe...
Enkidu said to his friend:
'My friend, the dream is auspicious,
It is a precious dream....
My friend, that mountain which you saw
That mountain is Humbaba.
We shall seize Humbaba, we shall kill him,
And cast his dead body on the plain....
They cut down a cedar, which attracts Humbaba's attention to them:
...Gilgamesh gripped the axe
And with it felled the cedar.
Humbaba, hearing the sound of this,
Fell into a fury and raged:
'Who is it who has come -
Come and intefered with my trees?
My trees which have grown on my own mountains?
And has also felled the cedar?'....
They overpower Humbaba with the treacherous help of Shamash, the sun-god, who drives fierce winds from all directions at Humbaba; the old mountain forest god pleads for his life and Gilgamesh seems willing to listen, but Enkidu advises against it.
...Enkidu said to his friend, said to Gilgamesh:
'My friend, Humbaba the guardian of the Cedar Forest......
Strike him to maim him.
Kill him! Crush him! And quickly,
Humbaba, the guardian of the forest -
Strike him to maim him.
Kill him! Crush him! And quickly.
Before God Enlil, the Foremost hears his cries.
The gods will be filled with wrath against us for our deed....
After several postponements, the Old one is slain:
...Gilgamesh heeded the words of his friend.
With his hand he took the axe,
Drew the sword from his belt.
Gilgamesh struck the neck of Humbaba,
Enkidu, his friend, struck Humbaba twice also.
At the third blow Humbaba fell.
Confusion..... dumbfounded,
He struck the watchman, Humbaba, to the ground.
For two leagues the cedars resounded.
Enkidu killed with him
Forest.... cedars
At whose word Mount Hermon -Saria
And all the Lebanon trembled.
All the mountains became.......
All the hills became.......
He slew the ......cedars,
Those destroyed....

Is this weeks show the last of the season?
The season runs until May and for most shows includes 22-24 episodes. After this week, Lost will be back on December 14th followed by more reruns until the next new episode January 11th.

Her partner said "that's not our call" as somebody already pointed out. I just figured what he meant by that is that they weren't meant to be investigating things like that because AL's mom told the guy to take her to a quiet town. He just didnt want her getting into trouble probably.

I took it to mean that the call was being dispatched to another unit, but AL called in to respond in defiance of the 'play it safe' attitude of her mother and partner.

Not in their patrol area; the disturbance was in an area that was being covered by another car, and apparently backup wasn't necessary, therefor AL's car would be taken out of their patrol area leaving it without coverage. Any police officers here?
rickypicky 11-28-05, 11:00 PM I think Sayid's reaction to learning Walt's fate from Michael was because Shannon had claimed earlier (the night of the day when they launched the raft?) that she had seen Walt, and nobody believed her!

I think Sayid was expecting to see Walt with the group, so it was a surprise to hear that he had been kidnapped at sea days earlier.

That scene had me cracking up. :D
This just occurred to me. Could the characters Rose and Bernard be an in-joke shout-out to Bernard Rose?

Could someone on the production staff be a friend of his?
Anyone here seen the movie Paperhouse? The IMDb summary says:
"Anna is becoming lost in the loneliness of her own world when she discovers she can visit another, a house she has drawn herself and occupied by a young disabled boy. But as she discovers more of the links between her fantasy world and the mundane present, she is drawn only deeper into a dream turning into a nightmare."
chrobins 11-29-05, 11:11 AM Someone please slap me if this has already been discussed, but I had to post a comment. In the scene where Kate and Tubby are playing golf, Kate clearly "slices" her drive to the right, and Jack walks up to her and says "you hooked it, keep your arm straight" or something like that. Is possible that no-one on the show knows the difference between a slice and a hook? I hate it when an actor tries pretend to be good at something (i.e. golf, basketball, etc). Jack is clearly not a golfer based on his swing. They tried to hide it by only showing a portion of his swing in the shot.
DeathOpie 11-29-05, 12:08 PM Looking at the puzzle, all the across words that intersect "Gilgamesh" seem incorrect. So I put in words that would be correct to see what I could come up with. For instance 42 across most likely is SHARE, 47a- SPEND, 53a- ACORNS and 59a- IMATATIVE. That gives you the following letters as 42d SPRA
I plugged that into a crosswork clue solver and came up with SPRAGGING, SPRAINING, SPRAWLERS and SPRAWLING. None of them make any sense and dont really go with the rest of the across clues. Oh well, I thought I was on to something.
Linux23 11-29-05, 01:01 PM Who the hell is Tubby?

I think more likely the editor on the show chose the take of Kate swinging the club that worked the best for a variety of other technical reasons even if it didn't match what was being said in the dialogue. They probably figured (correctly) that the majority of viewers wouldn't notice or care.
Who the hell is Tubby?
I assume he means Hurley.
chrobins 11-29-05, 01:14 PM The only reason that I cared is if someone tried to critique my golf game and they didn't the know difference between a hook and a slice I'd tell them to stick in in their ear.
Yes, by Tubby I was referring to Hurley.

For instance 42 across most likely is SHARE, 47a- SPEND, 53a- ACORNS and 59a- IMATATIVE. That gives you the following letters as 42d SPRABeen there, done that (and not that long ago ;)).http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6606736
I could not find IMATATIVE in my dictionary, so I used IMITATIVE. 73a is APERS, 78a is ACIDS, and the last "H" is probably an E (no guarantees, though). I could not think of a word that contained "IS_SKEET".
Anyone else notice that the rest of the puzzle seems to be in different handwriting? Most of the across words that were not completed are pretty easy - why would anyone leave them blank? There do not appear to be erasures that indicate Locke just erased this column to provide the correct answer. So maybe "Gilgamesh" is all that there is....
lexluthor 11-29-05, 04:00 PM It's too bad they didn't show Michael's reaction when entering the hatch. I thought that could have been interesting given that when he left, he had no idea that all even existing.
He didn't seem at all phased or curious about what he was inside.

There do not appear to be erasures that indicate Locke just erased this column to provide the correct answer. So maybe "Gilgamesh" is all that there is....It looks like the puzzle had already been completed - whether incorrectly or not - and Locke corrected the answer of 42 down to "GiLGAMESH". I say that because "GiLGAMESH" is written with darker letters, which is a natural tendancy when writing over something that was there before, whether erased or not. Trouble is, that makes all the across answers incorrect. Might be something interesting that comes out of all this, or maybe not. :D

I can't remember if they showed him entering the bunker or not. If they did and he didn't look surprised or curious, then that is bad, but if they just showed him inside after the fact, maybe they just thought it was a detail not worth air time. As mentioned before though, I think the one main continuity error in the episode was when Sun found out Jin was still alive, but then was later seen doing laundry while waiting for him to return. If she had known he was alive for sure, by seeing Michael, then she would have actively sought him out or at least been eagerly awaiting his return.
Anybody else notice that the crossword puzzle was missing a 98 down next to the 97 down? Methinks the puzzle was really just another puzzle that was doctored so they could put the "GiLGAMESH" in there. They've messed up on enough other details (e.g. Shannon's wound) that it wouldn't surprise me. Then "Spir" could be "Spiraled", etc.

Yes, it's now becoming difficult to tell "clues" fron typical "continuity errors."
To wit:
1. Watch AL's chat with her mother again...first her hair is all up, then there's a loose lock of hair, then it's fine, then it's loose...
2. Kate clearly sliced, yet Jack says she hooked the ball...He *is* a doctor, after all, and should know the difference.
3. Michael being uninterested in the hatch.
4. Sun calmly doing laundry even though she knows he's alive and being held at gunpoint.
I think they're getting sloppy in anticipation of the holiday break...

After what Micheal has been through in the last 10 days I am pretty sure he is getting hard to shock. Besides he already saw the talies bunker/hatch.
NOTE: Lost is scheduled until 10:04 tonight.
So we have the episode tonight and then 5 weeks off until the return on Jan. 11, according to the lost-media site. I heard somewhere there was one new episode in mid December but evidently not. Its the long awaited flashback and backstory of Mr. Eko when it resumes on Jan 11.
Why would you say such a thing. Just because he is fat, his name doesn't matter?
My guess is chrobins thinks he's Sawyer. :p
dmbatch 11-30-05, 12:55 PM hmmm.....I think Jack's reaction has to be about something more...besides, after everthing he's been through do you think he would remember the name of a women he meet for 2 minutes over a month ago. Someone mentioned they thought he was reacting to the term mistake or perhaps finding out Shannon was shot. Can't wait to see next weeks show - it looks good!
It was definitely recognition....looks like she made an impression (probably a good one). And now she's made another impression (not so good :-)
The last thing they said to each other in the bar was something about hooking up on the plane for another drink. How long after take-off was the crash? Seems like it must have been a few hours at least. Maybe they did "hook-up" on the plane. Seems to me Jack was returning to his seat from somewhere when he had the conversation with Rose. He knew AL was in 42F, right? I think part of their backstory might be on the plane.

I like that...I like that alot. To me that makes his reaction when he heard AL's name make a little more sense. I wouldn't think you would act so shocked just by hearing the name of a person you meet for 60 seconds in a bar. But then again, just hearing that some other people survived the crash could be pretty shocking.
I hate that after tonight we have to wait until Jan. 11 for a new show!!
ridgefamus 11-30-05, 02:43 PM He knew AL was in 42F, right? I think part of their backstory might be on the plane.
I believe Jack was the one in 42F and AL's mention of it confirmed she heard Jack correctly when he told her that was his seat. I also like your theory they hooked up before the plane went down. Their recognition of each other was just too strong for them to have had only the bar encounter.
CPanther95 11-30-05, 02:44 PM No, it was Anna in 42F - not Jack.

I have since erased this episode but wasn't Kate playing left handed? If so your slice becomes her hook.
Right-handed and great form to boot. I will overlook her hook!

AL: We'll have the next drink on the plane.
Jack: 42F
AL: 42F, right.
From that I take it that Jack was sharing his seat location and AL was confirming she heard it right.
I also watched the whole thing again last night and Kate was definitely hitting the club right handed. Her ball flight seemed to be a slight slice (the shot from the beach). So the "hook" comment was off base. She also hit right handed when she and Jack began their competition.
Check out the new season 2 cast promo pic that ABC put up. Its my new desktop.

Lost Numbers Appear in Ireland Lottery... Mostly
Everyone knows that Hurley won the lottery (and inherited quite a streak of bad luck) by using the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42, numbers which have since popped up quite often on the show.
The numbers have become so popular that usage of that specific number combination has surged in lotteries around the USA and possibly the world. However, unluckily (or luckily if you believe in the power of the numbers), the numbers have yet to prove to be a winning combination.
Until November 19, 2005.
At the Irish National Lottery, the winning numbers for November 19 were 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 24 (Bonus: 19). Notice anything about the numbers? Yes, the first five are exactly the same as the Lost numbers, and the sixth - 24 - is 42 reversed.
The official website for the Irish National Lottery indicates that 298 people matched 5 of the numbers correctly (and one reader reports that it's 4 times the average number of Match 5 winners). One wonders how many of these winners plugged in 4, 8, 15, 16, and 23.
Which begs the question: Should we worry about a Hurley-like jinx for these people? Or will the luck of the Irish cancel it out?
For more information, check out The Irish National Lottery (http://www.lotto.ie/prizes_results/prizes.asp?date=26/11/05&draw_date=Nov+19+2005) , Blogcritics (http://blogcritics.org/archives/2005/11/20/032406.php) and Second-Level.com (http://second-level.com/2005/11/22/lost-lotto-numbers-are-real-for-ireland/)

But there was no such inflection in his statement. Now, there may have been more that transpired during the bar meeting between AL and Jack than is shown in the lead-in. I don't have it from last season's final ep so was just going by what I see in "Collision". I know, I have seen the seating chart on the Oceanic site, too. Granted, Row 42 is a tail section row so it makes sense that AL was seated there. But I swear the impression you would get from this brief flashback is that Jack is in 42 .

CPanther95 11-30-05, 07:42 PM When AL said "We'll have the next drink on the plane" it had already been determined that they were on the same flight. When they figured that out, earlier, that's when AL told Jack her seat number.

According to the Oceanic site, 42 is the LAST row and 42F is labeled "Lucia, Ana", so it makes even more sense that AL was seated there.

I was under the impression last season that one of them (Jack & AL) had asked the other about exchanging seats. Maybe not, but if so that would add a whole other dimension to their relationship.

tbb1226 11-30-05, 10:15 PM That new film didn't tell us jack.I don't know, it's got me thinking. What if Desmond tried to use the computer to log on to AVS, thereby causing "another incident," which turned out to be the plane crash?
I can't figure out WTF is happening in that preview of the next episode.
It ended up being another piece of the same film, but it looks like there is still more missing..
man, that ending literally gave me chills!
Linux23 11-30-05, 10:26 PM That episode was merely okay.
lexluthor 11-30-05, 10:35 PM Maybe I'm trippin', but Shannon's bodybag appeared to twitch when Sayid tossed the dirt onto it.
I saw the same thing too.
Can anyone isolate what the TV was saying when Sayid was on? Kids were sleeping so I couldn't crank up the sound.
Peter Punter 11-30-05, 10:45 PM Did anyone else notice a hand in the shot of the horse when Sawyer & Kate see it in the jungle? I am sure there was a gloved hand on the right side of the picture.
prushing 11-30-05, 10:48 PM no new episodes until sometime in Jan.

Yes, maybe he wanted to calibrate the projector or possibly find the best location for his surround speakers.
I certainly don't think he was worried about sound isolation or acoustics down in the hatch. ;)
doh! my comcast DVR didn't record LOST for some reason! damnit.
how long before these episodes turn up online somehwere? or for purchase from the ipod/apple store?
CPanther95 11-30-05, 11:01 PM My name is Desmond, I'm a survivor of Oceanic flight 815, and we crashed on a deserted island somewhere in the rough vicinity of Howland Island - please send help.

Should show up on iTunes tomorrow - usually in the afternoon or evening.

i thought i saw something as well.. i need to tivo these in addition to watchin them so i can go back and relook at these scenes..
prushing 11-30-05, 11:23 PM they should be up to download by now
mollerup 11-30-05, 11:27 PM Tonight after Lost I was watching the news and they showed the Powerball numbers. The first number was.....42.....then.....23.....I was thinking holy crap...then...19, but for a minute I though it was a 16...Then no more of the LOST numbers. It's bound to happen eventually. Maybe in time for May sweeps. ;)
Carl Holt 11-30-05, 11:40 PM Nice episode.. next weeks looks really good..
ANyone else notice Sayid on the tv in kates fathers office?
Cannot believe I did this but I went back and watched the TiVo. Yes it was Sayid in the background but the time was all wrong. It almost looks like he is on the beach on the island, or else in Australia. Since in this back story Kate is in the States, and Sayid was only in Australia a month or so before he got on the plane he should not have been on the TV in those scenes.
roachxp 11-30-05, 11:43 PM Yes it was a hand in the horse shot probably the horses' handler standing by just in case the horse got out of hand.
Carl Holt 11-30-05, 11:44 PM Maybe I'm trippin', but Shannon's bodybag appeared to twitch when Sayid tossed the dirt onto it.
I looked at the TiVo for this to and I think was you see is a flaw in the editing of the show. It looks like one take was spliced into another. At the splice there is almost a wave that goes across the bag. The shading in the grave even changes a little. After the wave there is no dust in the air. Watched it several times but, sadly no, the body did not twitch.
That episode was merely okay.
Have to disagree....great ep! How about that Kate...cold blooded killer, and her 'father' knew it. Nature vs nurture....and nature won. :-(
Hurley cracks me up...guess he was up all night listening to Jin and Sun get their groove on. :-)
Interesting about the missing clip...I wonder if the computer is the problem in the first place? Artificial Intelligence experiment gone wrong? Wait, I forgot, they are all clones. :-)
Coming from someone who thinks the last few episodes have been a slow/dragging/boring, this was the best one since the season premiere.
Sucks if its true no new episodes till January.
Was it just me, or did the countdown stop right before Michael got on the computer? Or was it just not showing seconds because it hadn't gone far down enough yet?
When the computer was typing, did anyone think it was going to say "knock knock, Michael" or "follow the white rabbit"
Carl Holt 11-30-05, 11:49 PM OK, so how old is Kate.
She tells her father she got some photo's of him taken in Korea about 4 months before she was born. The Korean War ended in 1953. Assuming he was there at the end of the conflict that would make Kate at least 52 year old, and her father would be in his 70's.
Something is very wrong with the time line here.

Just because he was in Korea doesn't mean it was during the Korean War. We still have troops there.

Did she say "korean war" or "in Korea"?
Carl Holt 12-01-05, 12:03 AM I thought about that too but it did not fit. Usually when you hear a person say in Korea it implies during the war. The people I know now who have been there since say they were stationed in Korea. They always use the word stationed.
Just a play on words I know but it make me question the timeline at times. I've noticed other back stories that have also had an out of context feel to them. Jack's wedding is one and the other is Locke's.
Still, Sayid being on the TV in the background appears out of context too. Remember, somewhere between this back-story and when the plane leaves Australia Kate needs to hold up a bank to retrieve the toy plane and she needs to visit her old boy friend (and get him killed), all before going to Australia. We have never seen how she was caught have we? (I actually don't remember that.)
In the TV, Sayid looked like he does on the island, which makes his appearance out of context.
sterno3 12-01-05, 12:06 AM Can someone post what happened in the last 5 minutes...I missed the stupid exteded version again...it sounds like they watched the film, I am pissed I have updated my recording schedule, just in time for reruns...:(...anything else of interest happen?
ETphoneHome 12-01-05, 12:34 AM I loved Eko's line, "Don't confuse coincidence with fate."
• Now we know "What Kate Did" - murdered her step-father who was in reality also her biological father. No wonder in season one Kate's mother, who was in the hospital on a stretcher and couldn't speak well (a stroke, maybe?), as I recall, freaked when she saw Kate
• Interesting that the missing part of the film that was removed had to do with telling the bunker occupants not to use the computer for communications, as if someone wanted the bunker occupants to do just that
• GREAT cliff-hanger, with Michael seeing "Dad?" on the screen -- it's gonna be a long wait until 1/11/06 for the next new episode
• By the looks of the preview, it looks like the survivors may start to go explore the island a little more. With all that fire-power, if I were them, I'd form a small band of ten or twelve to go explore the island to try to find the "others." Put Ana and Sayid in the lead since they don't seem to really care if they die anyway
• Glad to have Saywer alert again. I miss his smart remarks.
• Noticed the new love quadrangle with Kate kissing Jack, then Kate helping Saywer out of the bunker, and at the end, Jack having that drink with Anna.
• Don't know what they are going to do with that horse, maybe start an island polo match?
Well, look forward to some new stuff in another month and a half.
thatdude90210 12-01-05, 01:09 AM • Don't know what they are going to do with that horse, maybe start an island polo match?
Considering how long they've been on the island, that horse can only end up as a big meal.

The seconds don't start to roll until the 4 minute mark, when the alarm begins sounding...

They watched the film, which warned them to not use the computer for anything other than entering the numbers. Then the last scene is of Michael in front of the computer with someone trying to communicate with a "Hello?"
Michael replied with a Hello, and was asked his name. He wrote Michael, and the reply was "Dad?"
Holy cow! that's some cliffhanger.

dharma 1 to dharma 2...over. Does this imply that 'the others' are hanging out in a darma station too? Or is the network open to outside computers?
If it is the former, maybe the others started 'recruiting' the tailies to man a countdown timer of their own? Who knows, maybe their timer is every 2 minutes, and this is all a psyche experiment to see to what lengths a group will go to when faced with an impending threat. The variable in the experiment being the length of time between resets.
2 hours=hang out and take shifts
2 minutes=capture unwilling volunteers to avoid going mad (all work and no fun makes jack go nuts! Go nuts, don't mind if I do).
All right, I am up too late again...

It's not out of context. Remember, it's a reacruiting station. What do you think they would be playing there? It's a recruiting video showing things from the Gulf War(1991). I don't think it really means much that they show Sayid in the video. It was from when he surrendered or was captured during the Gulf war. You can just barely see a solder leading him with his hands behind his back.
UriRx98 12-01-05, 03:18 AM Ok guys, i just looked in my guide on my Ultimate tv, and there is another epi next week, its EVERYBODY HATES HUGE. Iguess we get to see hugo quit his job again, and all that stuff. THis was a great epi, how was weird that Sawyer grabbed Kate and Asked why she killed him, then she sees a horse on the island, which actually looked exactly like the horse she saw when she and the us marshal crashed into that tree. She looked over and saw the black horse. This island is very stange, cause she actually got to touch it before it took off at the end. Eko and Locke, they are histerical together. Eko is like, i must tell u the story from the beginning, lockes thinkin, how he got on the plane, but nooo, he goes back to before christ. Locke was histerical. THe film spliced was great, i knew that something was going to happen as soon as he repeated, dont and i repeat dont, use the computer for any thing else but the code. THe weird thing was, that Locke tried to do something on the comptuter before and nothing happened, but when WAlt, and i assume it was Walt on the other end started initiating conversation, that he was able to type in his reply. Very strange, so i think we will prob see those other divisions of Dharma Hanso organization in the future of this season, cause Walt must still be somewhere on the Island.
SOmeone said there was a wave and not a twitch in the scene where Jack puts dirt on shannons body, i totally agree. It looked like a splice in the film, maybe something was editited out, like shannon being alive (JK). It wasnt a twitch.
O and if anyone else probally noticed, they moved ALias back to wed nights at 10pm following Lost. I think they said it lost a huge following when they put it on Thurs at 8pm. Not a great time since its on against OC and Joey. I know they are in totally different classees of shows, but I actually watch all 3, so its a damm good thing for Utv ( microsofts version of tivo for all newbies)., but im glad its back on wed night til its over, cause i think the same type of people watch both shows.
Excellent episode.
What the hell is it with that dartboard?
Favorite line....Jack: "So you're a shrink now?"
This episode seemed to kill the notion that was put forth earlier in the thread that "everything on the island can be explained logically", thus eliminating the supernatural/mystical possibilities. Sawyer's body inhabited by the spirit of Kate's murdered dad, who is released when he gets Kate's answer for the reason she killed him, gets back into the mystical realm. Not to mention the horse from her earlier experience.
Thank goodness.
The aspect of the first season that attracted me most was the consideration of possible explanations for events that were not easily explained (the appearance of Jack's late dad, the security system, etc.). For me the best aspect of last night's episode was the return to storytelling elements from season one that had been MIA thus far (other than Walt) in season two. The preview of upcoming episodes appeared to show the return of the security system in all its mysterious glory. For me, last night's episode put the show back on track.
DeathOpie 12-01-05, 06:57 AM Excellent episode.

Jack gets more obnoxious every week. The condescending/snotty way he talks to Locke, Hurley, etc. (How long before he breaks?)
What was Hurley's response to that? Something like "That's what they called me in the mental hospital"
"That's what they called it in the mental hospital" referring to "transference".

Kate said this, not her 'father'. She said "photos of you in Korea". She wouldn't necessarily have said "photos of you stationed in Korea" or "photos of you when you were stationed in Korea". Kate wasn't 'stationed' in Korea, her 'father' was.

Anyone notice the complete lack of damage when Kate backed up the car after it was wrecked and hit head on with a solid pole?
They were going pretty fast, the pole didn't break and the car would have absorbed much of the damage... enough for the airbags to go off. Yet, when she pushed the cop/marshall out of the driver's seat, we no longer saw either of the deployed airbags and the front of the car did not have the look of being damaged.
optivity 12-01-05, 10:31 AM What's the deal with Kate? Is she good, is she bad, do we care? Robbing banks, blowing up her dad, eluding the authorities... I'm having a hard time liking this character. I'm confused regarding how her character fits into the "grand plan" on Lost.
CPanther95 12-01-05, 10:37 AM If you can justify the blowing up of her Dad, then she'd be "good" since everything else was a result of that act.

Her 'dad' hit in on the head...he doesn't have murder in his heart, but he knew she did. She's bad. But she wants to be good, so she may find redemption on the island.
optivity 12-01-05, 10:52 AM OK, if it's redemption she's after... then I'll try and keep an open mind. To me it seems that all the characters good/bad experiences can somehow be justified, but Kate's are a "wee bit" over the top.

Wouldn't they have presumably been on prior to the crash? I doubt they would have turned themselves off.
I thought the car scene seemed pretty ridiculous. But then again, it was technically a flashback, so that could just be how she remembers it going down.
Kate's passionate kiss with Jack really surprised me, but hen again she is struggling with good boy vs, bad boy.

I'm starting to get the shakes already.
If we assume that it wasn't just a lapse by the prop guys, then the flashbacks occurred 2001 or later. "An Army of One" replaced "Be All That You Can Be" as the Army's promotional slogan that year:http://lost-media.com/modules/coppermine/albums/ep-promos/sea2/whatkatedid/whatkatedid-promo05.jpg

tdtobat 12-01-05, 11:51 AM Going to watch it again tonight for more details but I noticed that the washer is being used. In a scene shot looking out from the bunkbeds you see the door of the washer or dryer wide open. For a second I thought they did that so when Kate/somebody ran out they would trip over it.
I've read thru most of this thread and this has probably been stated before (so cut me some slack if it has and I apologize to the person who originally posted it)
It seems like everyone on the island has an issue with their parents:
Jack and his dad
Shannon and her step mom
Kate and her dad
AL and her mom
Walt and his divorced parents (long time without ever seeing his dad)
Locke and his dad
Etc....common thread between them all have something to do with them surviving the crash? Who knows?
And by the way, I can't wait to see Eko's flashback.
ETphoneHome 12-01-05, 12:21 PM Notice the point was made early on in the show that Kate had gotten very little sleep -- gone over 24 hours without sleep, I think, and then she was out gathering fruit and still never slept. There always seems to be some connection between sleep deprivation and having mysterious occurances (Jack seeing his dad, Kate having Sawyer grab her and ask "why did you kill me?", etc).
Michael's discovery of the blast doors was interesting. I wonder if they shut if the code is not entered, and/or if there is some other way to trigger them.
Crash scene with Kate and the marshall was a little hokey. Besides what's been mentioned with the little damage and headlights, the fact that Kate gave him a kick and the driver's door popped open and he fell out is far-fetched. More than likely you'd put a good dent in the door before it opened. And if the crash didn't even put a dent in the front bumper, no way it had any bearing on the door.
As for Kate herself, I also like her character a little less after last night's episode. She killed a man because she knew she would never be "good" or "have good things." Just because she has a looser for a father? That's not true. You are what you make of yourself. Just because you got a trailer trash daddy who likes to drink Keystone is no reason to make him and the whole house go Ka-bloom! Plus Kate committed fraud by taking out an insurance policy and then destroying the house so her mom would benefit from it. I don't see any justification for her actions.
Kate should have just moved out of the house, moved cross country, and started a new life. True, that wouldn't help her mom, but did Kate really help her by making Wayne go Ka-bloom? Her mom doesn't seem to think so. And thinking back to what else Kate did -- robbing a bank with other criminals just to get a little plastic airplane that belonged to a high school boy she liked -- dang, she's one messed up chick! The marshall was right when he said not to be fooled by her. She is dangerous and unpredictable. Yes, there might be an occasional good/redeeming action on her part, like wanting the Aussie farmer to get his reward money, but the evil things she does more than cancels those out.

tec1271 12-01-05, 12:39 PM Wonder why nobody has brought up the whole analogy that Eko spewed out to Lock. The destroyed temple, the book, the rebuilt temple, etc. Personally, I'm not sure what to make of it, but they never put anything into a show for no reason.

although I never killed my dad or "bitch-slapped" my mom :D
Michael's discovery of the blast doors was interesting. I wonder if they shut if the code is not entered, and/or if there is some other way to trigger them.
I'm surprised Michael would have recognized the metal in the ceiling as the bottom of a blast door. These aren't common in typical building construction. Fire doors yes but not blast doors. And even the automatic ones usually move horizonally, not drop from the ceiling so this would have to be a very unusual application.
ridgefamus 12-01-05, 01:19 PM I'm not very familiar with the history of networking but would an old Apple IIe be network-capable? Even if it's a LAN, where the Dharma installations were somehow supposed to be connected, was there really a technology back then to permit this? And why would the Dharma movie caution against comunicating with the computer if the LAN is limited to the other Dharma sites on the island. Who else would one be able to communicate with? Maybe the cable into the ocean is a Verizon FIOS. :D

Pretty sure the early Macs could be networked, but it was likely a serial connection, not ethernet like we are used to using today.
Those old Macs bring back memories...
I wanna play Choplifter!, can we huh, can we?! :-)

Most of us think that the Apple (or whatever it is) is just being used as a dumb serial terminal to the behemoth computer with the tape drives and the blinkenlights in the background. You know that thing can do networking. Just look at how many lights are blinking on it all the time. :)

Not sure about the horse, but the Sawyer incident, I believe, was just Kate hallucinating/going a bit crazy. I don't think Sawyer was actually saying any of that stuff...she was just imagining it.
The seconds don't start to roll until the 4 minute mark, when the alarm begins sounding...I don't know, they showed that glimpse of the clock as Michael was "playing" with the system, and immediately after they showed Eko and Locke watching the re-spliced movie warning not to mess with it. I think it was shown for a reason and I think we'll see why next year ;).
As far as Kate goes, one small thing the Marshall said when "speculating" as to her reasons for committing the murder was alluding to the possibility that the "father" may have been paying her "special" attention as well. Remember how he grabbed her and told her several times how pretty she was. I think he may have been paying her some late night "visits" when mom wasn't around if you know what I mean... Definitely would be further fuel to cause her to want him spread all over in little pieces. I think she's a good person deep down but her head has been messed up since childhood so she is psychologically a little twisted now.
I don't think we can automatically assume that it was Walt replying to Michael either.

I'm surprised Michael would have recognized the metal in the ceiling as the bottom of a blast door. These aren't common in typical building construction. Fire doors yes but not blast doors. And even the automatic ones usually move horizontally, not drop from the ceiling so this would have to be a very unusual application.
I don't know anything about blast doors, but it would seem logical that they would come from the ceiling. They would close by gravity instead of energy being needed to slide a door horizontally.
Speaking as someone who grew up with an obnoxious drunk in the household for many years, when you're in that situation around the late teen years not a day goes by that you don't seriously consider murder.
Gecko85 12-01-05, 01:49 PM Pretty sure the early Macs could be networked, but it was likely a serial connection, not ethernet like we are used to using today.
Those old Macs bring back memories...
I wanna play Choplifter!, can we huh, can we?! :-)
It's not an old Mac...it's an old Apple II. And, yes, it could be networked (connected to another computer) via serial or null-modem cable.
ridgefamus 12-01-05, 01:55 PM ...it could be networked (connected to another computer) via serial or null-modem cable.
That was part of the point I was trying to make. It would olny be able to be connected with other computers within the Dharma experimentation stations on the island. Why then the caution to NOT use it for communication to the - did he say "outside"?
Unless as scowl says those blinkin' lights indicate a further reach.

I stand corrected :-)
dharma 1 to dharma 2...over. Does this imply that 'the others' are hanging out in a darma station too? Or is the network open to outside computers?
Well, since Locke demonstrated that the computer only accepted input inside the 4 minute warning, I'd think it was more than just some other computer's AOL Instant Messanger calling...
I'm thinking Remote Viewing/Astral Projection/Psychic Research/Ghost in the Machine...

mollerup 12-01-05, 02:18 PM I was bothered by Michael's initial reaction to someone typing a message to him on the computer. I would think he should have reacted a bit more like Boone did when he heard the other voices on the radio. This could be a sign of contact from off the island..a hope for a rescue. But, he seemd too casual and just a simple text message going on like one of his buddies was instant messaging him at work.
There is more to her back-back story, bank on it. I like her character more because she went from a "scrapbooker" Grade A student to a fugitive and back on the island... flawed yet good hearted. Gotta love how she owned the Marshall repeatedly also. LOL.

Well, they did make an accousitc coupler modem that connected to the serial port, so you could "network" with anything via dialup...
The seconds don't start to roll until the 4 minute mark, when the alarm begins sounding...
I don't know, they showed that glimpse of the clock as Michael was "playing" with the system, and immediately after they showed Eko and Locke watching the re-spliced movie warning not to mess with it. I think it was shown for a reason and I think we'll see why next year ;).
They showed the clock so that we could see that Michael wasn't inside the 4-minute window, and yet the console was no longer locked...
Man, i can't wait 'till January...

I don't know anything about blast doors, but it would seem logical that they would come from the ceiling. They would close by gravity instead of energy being needed to slide a door horizontally. From what I've looked at on the Internet today, automatic horizontal blast doors either use huge coiled springs or weighted pulleys to close. Apparently dropping heavy blast doors can potentially damage them and if they get stuck and don't come down, there's ntohing you can do to fix them. Doors that weigh over a thousand pounds are so well balanced that one person can close them manually if they have to. These ceiling blast doors sound like they were installed so people couldn't operate them or mess with them in any way.
It looks like the blast door business has really taken off since 9/11.
Considering how long they've been on the island, that horse can only end up as a big meal.

snowcat 12-01-05, 03:01 PM I've read thru most of this thread and this has probably been stated before (so cut me some slack if it has and I apologize to the person who originally posted it)
It seems like everyone on the island has an issue with their parents:
Jack and his dad
Shannon and her step mom
Kate and her dad
AL and her mom
Walt and his divorced parents (long time without ever seeing his dad)
Locke and his dad
Etc....common thread between them all have something to do with them surviving the crash? Who knows?
And by the way, I can't wait to see Eko's flashback.
Hurley's mom was a nag
Sun and Jin have a mob boss for a dad/in-law
Sawyer is trying to avenge his parents deaths
Charlie, Claire, and Sayid don't seem to have any parental issues.
Kate & Patsy Cline! Remember in season 1 when Kate was in the car with the farmer and a Patsy Cline song comes on the radio. The farmer asked Kate if they play Patsy Cline up in Canada and Kate says sure, they play Patsy Cline everywhere.
The song Kate played before she sat next to Sawyer was Walking After Midnight by Patsy Cline. Hmmm, how did Patsy Cline die?

Do you think Michael was really having a "chat" with Walt (would the real Walt have said, "Dad?" in response to "This is Michael. Who is this?"?) or was he - Michael - imagining it?
Lots of things on this show can be taken literally or figuratively. Keeps us guessing.

I would take it as literal. My guess is that Walt is being held in another Dharma bunker somewhere on the island. He's been "playing" with the remote viewing equipment, but doesn't know how to use it and all his messages are coming out backward.
I suspect he discoverd a PC somewhere in the complex and tried using that. He may possibly not know that he is still on the island, so seeing the name "Michael" he just might take a stab that it is "Dad".
Of course, I suspect the episode in January will have Michael typing in

hongcho 12-01-05, 05:02 PM Maybe I imagined (although I am not deprived of sleep or anything) hearing it, but in the spliced portion of the intruction video, I thought I heard the instructor mention "station 3", something like "someone from station 3 may trick you to use the computer for other purposes." My wife deleted the recording, so can someone else check if I heard correctly or not?
Also, in the new clip, the instructor looked different, more scared perhaps, than in the original clip.

As for Kate and Sawyer... If Kate did NOT imagined Wayne's words coming out from Sawyer, there is a possibility that what Jack heard (about Sawyer loving Kate) actually came from Wayne. Maybe there is a back-back story for Kate and Wayne.

Of course, that's using their own list of premature deaths, many of which are pretty much unknown...so don't really count as rockstars. Many of the more famous deaths have been at age 27.
They counted 321 deaths altogether. Here's the breakdown:

Heart Attack 42 Drug Overdose 40
Misc. Medical 37 Suicide 36
Auto/Cycle Crash 35 Cancer 25

Except Graham Parsons was 26 (died six weeks before his 27th birthday), David Byron (not Bryson, who is in Counting Crows) was 29 when kicked out of the band, and 38 when he died, and Jimmy McCulloch was also 26. In fact, 26 and 28 seem to be about as common as 27 for rock star deaths.

There was a previous letter (forget where the link was) from the same person to the Hanso Foundation complaining that an experiment of theirs on Zanzibar had become a threat to the human population, as a primate disease had mutated and become dangerous to humans as well. It threatened intervention.

Okay, have we always been able to bring up the orientation film by clicking on "Active Projects"; getting denied access until "Dharma Initiative" appears, clicking on it, and there is the orientation film, pre-Locke's editing.
In that film the lab coat guy talks about how the timer and the button are in response to the "incident" at station 3, "the swan". They did not always have the countdown, so perhaps it's causation is not mechanical, but psycho-social.

I'd be surprised if we don't see him again sometime.
NorthJersey 12-02-05, 03:01 PM Kurt Cobain...dead at 27
Brian Jones (Rolling Stones...27)
Graham Parsons (27)
David Bryson (Uriah Heap lead singer...27)
Jimmy McCullough (Wings guitarist...27)
Alan Wilson (Canned Heat...27)
Chris Bell (Big Star...27)
Dennes Boon (Minutemen...27)
Pigpen McKernan (Grateful Dead...27)
and there are others...
It would seem 27 is a very popular age, but according to the Premature Deaths of Rock Stars, the average age of premature rockstar death is 36.9 years. Of course, that's using their own list of premature deaths, many of which are pretty much unknown...so don't really count as rockstars. Many of the more famous deaths have been at age 27.
They counted 321 deaths altogether. Here's the breakdown:
SUMMARY OF CAUSES OF DEATH
Heart Attack 42 Drug Overdose 40
Misc. Medical 37 Suicide 36
Auto/Cycle Crash 35 Cancer 25
Airplane Crash 22 Unknown 21
Murdered 18 Alcohol 9
Accident 6 Drowned 5
Brain Tumor 4 AIDS 4
Poisoned 3 Leukemia 3
Electrocuted 3 Stroke 3
Fire 3 Choked 2
Ok, that's all the useless info I have for now
yes but that average age is thrown way off because Keith Richards is walking-death at about 350 years old, with Mick Jagger not too far behind :)

You'll see him again...
[spoiler ]
He'll be sitting in a trailer filled with monitors along with Ethan, Walt, Boone, Shannon, the US Marshall, the Others, and Ashton Kutcher waiting to tell the 'survivors' that they've been PUNKED

tdtobat 12-02-05, 05:01 PM I think the new additions to the hans website are the writers/producers giving us a clue. There is a "mole" in their midst. Who is it? Mr. Eko, Michael, etc. Any guesses? My take, they get Walt back and he is the mole!

auburn97 12-03-05, 04:19 PM If you re-watch last week's scene when Eko and Locke are watching the repaired video of Marvin Candle, there is definitely a difference in the part of the video that they spliced back in. Candle is standing in the same spot, wearing the same clothes, but his hair is longer and greyer than in the original parts of the film. Whether this was intentional or not, I don't know, but why would ABC want to film the scene twice if they knew the writers already knew they were going to use the spliced film?
Specifically, look at the sideburn on Candle's right temple. You'll see what I mean. In addition, there is much more shadow on his face during this added film sequence.
