...but Alias was a huge smash hit, and it was JJ's project and it made a ton of money for the network...Lost is also a smash hit and a big money maker for the network...Hopefully it won't fall off the wagon like Alias did near the end of Season 3 and the network will have no reason to try to rework like they did with Alias...I'm just saying, there are some similiarties.

Every time it aired on Sunday nights (except for the post-Super Bowl episode) it ranked behind 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' and the 'CBS Sunday Night Movie.' Its appeal to 18-49 year-old viewers and Jennifer Garner's high profile (magazine covers, TV stories, etc.) is what kept this show alive and perceived to be a hit when in fact it wasn't. After it moved from Sunday to other nights 'Alias' never ranked better than 3rd in any time slot ABC stuck it in. The show does have a passionate following and it sold well on DVD, but a 'huge smash hit' it wasn't. Even the weekday reruns on TNT scored so poorly at 6PM a year ago that TNT has relegated it to post-midnight runs early in the week.

I just had an unnerving thought. What if the producers in an effort to increase viewership break into the first block of 6 episodes (or some number of them) with flashbacks of prior season scenes? You all are right that it doesn't make a lot of sense to jump right in at S 3 without any background. The few who have heard the hype from S 1&2 viewers and figure they might get their feet wet by starting to view Lost in S 3, will quickly be way over their heads and likely tune out - unless the show brings them up to speed somehow. And that would be patently unfair to us loyalists.

It's got to be a real dilemma for the producers to figure out a way to increase the viewer base when presenting a serial drama such as Lost. The "hooked" stay hooked but what hooks a newbie?

Producers of Lost have had "review" episodes, where they go through the storyline up until that point. Usually, it happens sometime before the season finale, but do they also do it before the premier?

Alias fell off the rails with the first episode of Season 3 and never recovered.

I hope Lost doesn't follow this route, but the difference is that J.J. Abrams is much less involved in Lost than he was in Alias. He's not the show-runner, so I don't think the comparison is necessarily valid.

Doesn't sound familar? Remember the ratings for Lost this season? I'm just saying, the show has similarities in the way its running...

You are going to have a very difficult time understanding what is going on. The story arc is dense and complicated, and mysterious. Plus, there were so many good moments of television in the first two seasons (and some great ones as well--like Locke's first background story, season 2 premier opening shot, etc.)

My recommendation would be to set the DVR to record all new eps(and stay away from this thread) and then get through Season 1 and 2 on DVD as soon as possible, if you don't, I'll bet you'll regret it.

At the risk of remaining OT, and whether Big Brother is asinine or not, if you ever watched her on BB (where she's been the host since 2000) you'd see that her talent is underwhelming at best. It's no accident that BB fans (yes, there are a few of those) have given her the nickname Chenbot. IMO, her current status and fame has been largely due to her relationship to Les Moonves, Mr. CBS.

The Philadelphia Daily News quotes executive producer Carlton Cuse with some interesting tidbits for Season 3. He also says there is no one simple unifying theory to the show:

Overall - I agree. Other than one or two episodes, I was very disapointed. The William Hurt and William H. Macy episodes were the only ones I really enjoyed. Maybe it has something to do with guys name William? ;)

I agree. The William Hurt episode with the green army and no dialog was clever and original. The others, not so much.

Just remembered another one that I didn't mention in that post. The "doomsday" episode with the guy from Office Space and the (grown-up) kid from E.T. was really good. I'd put that on par with the William Hurt one.

If you didn't listen to it, it basically amounted to some obnoxious-sounding nerd-chick asking them if they were shocked that they didn't get a nomination because "she wasn't." I'm starting to think that you don't mess with the Hawaii Highway Patrol! In my experience, police traffic enforcement varies WIDELY from state to state... and what they crack down on varies as well. For instance, in Indiana, they are hard on speeding, but you can run lights and stop signs and make illegal u-turns all day long. In Californa, they are way more lax on speeding, but hard on stop sign running, window tint, etc. (I've lived in 6 states so far.)

George Lopez has jumped the shark. Those writers have no idea where they're going with it. I seriously think they're making the whole thing up as they go! And what's up with all those kitchen scenes and talking and stuff? If they don't start showing more action I'm outta here. And another thing. i've never bought an Itunes tv show simply because i couldnt justify paying 2 dollars for a show and i was always curious how it looked, so i got my chance, and it looks pretty darn good. So if anyone else is interested, heads up. kudos to ABC for really giving a great online promotion to bolster the user experience for these shows.

just for the record, I finished the Season 2 Disc set (extras and all, no commentarys though) in just under a week after purchasing it. Watched 3 entire discs on Sunday (yeah 12 whole episodes)

Lost is awesome...watching it again really shows how great the series is...

As in true Lost fashion, ABC has released its official synopsis of the season 3 premiere, without saying much. I don't think this applies as a spoiler.
"In the season premiere episode, 'A Tale of Two Cities,' Jack, Kate and Sawyer begin to discover what they are up against as prisoners of The Others."

So the first episode is titled "A Tale of Two Cities, the Charles Dicken classic about the French revolution. What could this mean? It wouldn't be Lost without more book references. Losties vs Others. ?? First paragraph of the book reads: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair. —."

Well ok, it's only a little something to munch on, but at least we are finally getting closer to bringing life back to this board again. Summer is closed for the season....Fall has begun!! You do understand that the "No Spoilers" applies only to shows that haven't aired - so if you're trying to avoid info from the last half of Season 2, you ought to avoid the thread.

I wonder if there's a place where all the events from summer's 'The Lost Experience' will be neatly summarized for those of us who want to know, but don't want to invest the time in going through it all.....? There's no way to avoid discussing a show until after it airs in every country worldwide, or until everyone manages to catch the episodes on DVD or on their archived video source.

For better or worse, the "spoiler" designation has been defined to apply until it airs on an American broadcast network or cablenet on the East Coast. Those that Tivo, or those watching in another time zone should avoid the show discussion threads until they have seen the latest episode of that show.

Surveying a worldwide audience to determine which, if any, episodes have yet to be aired before discussion is allowed is not practical.

Lost is consistently one of the best-looking shows in HD, but if you're watching over DirecTV pretty much everything is going to have serious artifacting due to their low bandwidth and downrezzing.

I actually thought the recap was pretty well done too. I thought about not watching it (OK, it was a brief thought ;) ), but I'm glad I did. I liked the way they presented it this time compared to previous recaps ep's, and even though I've watched every ep so far as well, there were some scenes I didn't remember seeing before (some of the stuff with Michael and the others...). Now I'm really pumped up for next Wednesday to get here.

Not that I'm complaining.... :oWhile I thought the producers did a really effective and entertaining synopsis of the first 2 years of "Lost," it was interesting to me that they only attempted to cover what's happened ON (and around) the island.

But then, most everyone here knows that's only half the story -- what makes "Lost" compelling is the unfolding, incomplete back stories of the individual characters.

Of course, there's no manageable way to boil all that down into even a 3-hour recap. But I think what they did show was more than enough to pique the interest anyone who hasn't previously seen the show.

Personally, I've always enjoyed the backstories since they usually have 1 or 2 "6 degrees of separation" moments in them where we see another of the characters crossing the path, sometimes unexpectedly, of another before the crash.

While I am tired of all the Lost clip shows, I was glad they did this one to get me back up to speed for the new season.

I am kind of pissed, because I thought three very interesting characters were killed off. I know this is not going to happen, but I hope Michael pushes the throttle hard and never looks back. Lets start a poll "Who would you have rather seen killed off?":)

Stephen King is a master at this as well. With one sentence he ties multiple books together.

What disappointed me most about last Wednesday's Lost catch-up episode is there was absolutely no reference made to how season 2 ended:

"Two men in heavy coats, speaking in Portugese play chess. One men looks up and something catches his attention, while the other man tells him it's his move.

He's looking at a computer that says Electromagnetic Anomaly Detected. "How long has it been doing that?" he asks. "That's it, isn't it? We missed it again."

"We didn't miss it again," the other man says. He opens a binder and looks for something.

The first man says, "So it's not a false alarm this time?"

"Shut up and call!" He types something into the computer.

In a home, the phone rings and a woman picks it up. "Miss Widmore?"

"Yes," she says.

"It's Horace."

She turns on the light and on her nightstand is the same photo that Desmond has in the hatch.

"I think we found it," Horace says.

We see her face. It's a shocked Penelope Widmore."

It seems you pretty much have that covered yourself.

Recapping two whole seasons in hour...they kind of had to cut some things. There were alot of things missing. In the grand scheme of things, Libby was a minor character.Libby was a minor character, perhaps, but they left out a whole lot of major events, apparently to avoid using scenes with characters who have left the show. I don't recall any mention or glimpses at all of Boone, Shannon, or Libby in this entire recap, even though all three of their deaths were significant plot points at the time of their occurrence.

Ana Lucia was impossible to leave out, because she was too integral to the story of Michael's deception and betrayal at the behest of the Others...

I agree, there was probably a decision made to leave out the characters that are no longer on the show. And the reason they left them out was because they were taking two full seasons, and condensing them into one hour.

I'm really torn on watching the first episode. I've got my Sabres playing the first game of the season, against Carolina of all teams. Sure I could DVR Lost, but I probably won't have time to watch it till the weekend, by then I'll be way behind in this thread. Hmm... I'm hoping that My Sabres will be up something like 6-0 by the time Lost starts.

I noticed how non-commital the synopsis for the premier of Lost is in the TV magazine from our Sunday paper:

LOST What will become of Michael and Walt (Harold Perrineau, Malcolm David Kelley)? What will the Others do to Jack, Kate and Sawyer (Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly, Josh Holloway)? Is Sun's (Yunjin Kim) baby going to be OK? And is Jin (Daniel Dae Kim) really the father? Don't expect answers to all your questions from last spring in the season premier; but we can tell you the Others will play a more prominent role. And keep an eye out for new faces.It reminds me a bit of a soap opera teaser...better yet, it reminds me of the old Carol Burnett Show takeoff on the soap operas teasers.

HONOLULU (AP) - Thousands of fans swamped Waikiki to get a glimpse of the stars of ABC's castaway drama "Lost" and see a preview of the third season.

The entire cast of the show attended the red-carpet event Saturday night to promote the season premiere, which airs Wednesday. The show is filmed in Hawaii.

The crowd welcomed each cast member with loud cheers, and some fans got autographs.

Before the season's first episode was shown on the big screen, producers asked that the audience keep quiet about it until after it airs on TV.

Cast members said they were flattered by the reception.

"Believe it or not, this doesn't happen every day," said Terry O'Quinn, who plays Locke on the show. "I'm not used to it, but I don't mind it. I've never been to a Hollywood premiere, but can't imagine anything surpassing it."
