No, seriously. Penny's (or her father) certainly has the money to buy the technology to have "implanted" a (homing or some other) device into Desmond, no?
why woiuld Penny's father do it? Didn't he pay off Desmond to stay away from his daugther? Check back to season 2 final episode.

Cell phones go from phone to tower and those go to land lines. Then, if it needs to go to another cell phone, it runs to the nearest tower and gets broadcasted from there. You don't hop towers unless you pass from one coverage area to another.

Regular phones and cell phones only use satellites for international calls (and both are in land lines before that. Most don't even need to do that. They usually take advantage of a few under-sea trunk lines.

The biggest difference is that a sat phone would work from almost anywhere even if no towers are around.

But there are infidels among us who favor tight little asses for some inexplicable reason. :D

I have to admit, it's a character flaw of mine; I'm stuck with it and will just have to live with I guess! :D

Don't know. To keep track of him perhaps and to make sure he stayed away? Not much of a stretch considering his personality. And if it was him, then I'm assuming that Penny found out about it and therefor, here she is, tracking him down.

I made that suggestion waaaay back a few pages, i.e. there has to be a ship nearby because helicopters are short range aircraft. Not necessarily an "aircraft carrier" though.
So how did that small Nigerian drug plane crash there? How was Juliet able to get to the island in a sub from Portland in only a few hours instead of days? Why did the sub need to follow a beacon instead of just going to a location on a map?

The show is hinting that the island is in some sort of worm hole dealie and perhaps Penny and Co. have figured out how to get through it (perhaps by accident like most who've ended up there).

The biggest difference is that a sat phone would work from almost anywhere even if no towers are around.

Of course, one can make it more confusing by saying all sat phones are cell phones (they can also call using a tower if there isn't satellite line of sight available - but there is a tower nearby), but few cell phones are also sat phones.

The confusion comes in with modern cell phones using GPS satellites to track their postions, mostly for the benefit of 9-11 call location. However, that's just a locater, not for making calls. In fact, it doesn't really help the phone stay in contact with the towers - the phone pings out to nearby towers periodically to do that.

Sat phones also use more power. They're more like the older analog "Bag Phones" that used to use 3-5 watts for analog service and had larger carrier waves requiring a longer antenna. Modern digital cell phones only use a half a watt at most and many have just a little stub of an antenna to collect the tiny carrier wave.

It seems like she was looking for the big pulse, not a little tracking beacon. When the hatch imploded, that's what the Russian guys' computer reacted to.

Network: in real life all bing nations USA, Russia, UK and maybe China has expeditions to Antarica to test "global warming" so wouldn't a huge step to say the russians were there.

Oh, no doubt. I guess after encountering several Russian speaking folks on the island, it makes sense the guys she used are also Russian. Of course, I'm pretty sure they're hired guns located well away from where the other environmental research teams wouldn't find them.

It's pretty certain the polar bears were brought there for research.

However, that doesn't mean the rest of your statement couldn't be true. We didn't see what snowy region of the world those guys were located in...

Of course, they sounded Russian - and the Arctic would be closer for them than the Antarctic region.

You're not the first to have made a statement along these lines. To me, it still seems to run afoul of the creators' claims that there would be no 'monkey business'. Would you mind listing what evidence you think supports the existence of wormhole(s), cause I think that's kind of a shot in the dark (but not impossible)?

If you come across it, watch it again. It's pretty funny. It sounds almost like Howie Mandell's gag he used to do. They did that occasionally in "Night Gallery", too. Apparently Rod wasn't much into using child voice-over talent.

I almost forgot:

Since it was a couple weeks ago the last time someone mentioned reading "The Third Policeman", I'm not going to find the post to quote it.

At any rate, if anyone does read it - don't read the forward before reading the actual story. A letter the author sent to the publisher is printed within the forward - and it contains a huge spoiler on a major plot item in the book. Read the story first, then go back and read the forward. It is worth reading later.

I accidently started to read it and was pissed when I ran across that part. Luckily, I stopped myself before I caught the whole gyst of it and it didn't completely spoil it.

I'm thinking it's more like a "budget-saving" Twilight Zone episode The Odyssey of Flight 33 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Odyssey_of_Flight_33), although that one was a time travel thing.

yeah that was mentioned endlessly during the first season. The question was, were are are they located? One scene to help that theory was when Sayid got the 2 way radio from Hurley nd they listen to music, but not just any music, Big band music probably from the 50's. Never mind the "BLACK ROCK" She might be here for "16 years" but, Is that real time? That shipped looked older then ships from 16 years ago. There are other things but I am at work and can't think of anymore, however I know our other LOST buddies will ad to this conversation.

The things I wrote (Nigerian plane, sub getting to the island too quickly and needing special navigation) plus Desmond saying they're in a "snow globe", and Ben saying the Losties would "go around in circles" in their boat.

The tagged birds hint that there is a way to get off the island unless those birds recently became trapped on the island themselves. Oh, that would be a good shocker: finding the bird that they stuck the rescue note on was still on the island.

Sorry, couldn't resist. :D

Terrific episode for me.

Good:
It's a Desmond flashback, who is one of my favorite characters
Hurley and Charlie's argument over Flash versus Superman
Charlie's Death (yes, it was only a premonition, but I still enjoyed it)
Sawyer's lines ("Who's your favorite other." "We have to play every 108 minutes..." and to Kate "You could've just asked.")
Jin's "Ghost Story"
A new hottie is on the island. :D

Bad:
No Sayid
Immasculated Sawyer - I don't like this new insecure, hurt-feelwings Sawyer...
Charlie didn't actually die ;)
Is it me or does Jack actually seem to look upon all the other Losties with disdain now? It just seems like he has a disgusted look on his face when he interacts with them.

In addition to the "click," there was some video problems on my viewing as well. Early in the episode, there was a glitch where the entire screen went to an orangish image, and then reverted back to normal. When I tried to recreate it by rewinding (hey, this is Lost, I thought it might've been an Easter egg), it didn't recurr, it just skipped over the glitch instead. My DVR froze a few minutes later so I'm thinking it was a local (to me) issue. I only mention it because of the audio issues we all apparently experienced.

Yeah, I don't understand the hate for Jack, either. He was willing to submit himself to the Others, and perhaps get thrown back in the cage or worse (let out only to administer to Ben; could have happened), just for the chance to get off the island and mount a rescue attempt. And they're also probably coming back. Think about it. Every once in a while they all pack up and go over to Alcatraz Island to do whatever it is they do over there. Then, they come back to "the barracks". The Losties don't have the firepower, or the will, to fight them off when they come back to sleep in their own beds. Best to just stay away. (Although a little judicious looting wouldn't have been out of the question, I suppose.)

One thing I was wondering.... does the sonic fence work both ways? It was off (presumably to let The Others pass through on their way back to Alcatraz), then Juliet turned it back on. Yet there was no mention of it as she, Jack, Kate, and Sayid left the barracks to return to the beach, and they would have had to pass through it again. Presumably, it was still on.

Absolutely. Lose the stupid ping pong table. They have a pool table over there, not to mention water and electricity and roofs and you don't have to pee in the ocean. They've got a cool fence that can kick Smokie/Lostzilla's ass. They probably have badminton too. Screw living under tarps. It's like the hatch times ten!

They need to get back over the Othersville and just loot the place. But then that would mean talking to each other and that's against the first rule of Lost: nobody says nothin' until the plot demands it.

If I remember correctly, Desmond arrived on the island while sailing around the world in a race. He should not have gone even remotely close to the Arctic if he was sailing around the world. He would get close to Antarctica if he didn't go through the Panama Canal, but not the arctic. Antarctica isn't 2 hours from Portland either, so I don't think the island is in the Arctic or Antarctica. It always seemed to me, Desmond arrived on an island that was similar to the other islands in the area that he got lost in.

On different note, does anyone besides me think the parachute chick was nasty ugly? I mean she was not pretty AT ALL!

My DVR froze a few minutes later so I'm thinking it was a local (to me) issue. I only mention it because of the audio issues we all apparently experienced. Are you sure the flash wasn't purple? I think you've been detected! At this very moment there is a helicopter piloted by a curly haired sex worker headed your direction ...

I stand corrected, I have no problem admitting it. as a thank you, I will share the xool site of the day with all of you as I say to my buddies have a good weekend. For the Heros fan's That have strayed away from the thread during the inactive period. I will remind you guys the last three episodes are being replayed on NBC tomorrow night.

http://www.polarbearsinternational.org/beartracker/Hmm..maybe it's just me, but that's a little creepy...You know, maybe there is some credence in the Desmond implant theory after all. This satellite tracker thing got me to thinking. Penny's dad was pretty much of an arrogant ass h*le. Maybe he's in on this whole thing and he had one of these satellite trackers implanted in Des just so he could get his jollies watching the tracks go around in circles as his sailboat bumped around inside the island "shield". I could just see him kicking back, drinking his $20,000 shots of scotch, watching his monitor and saying, "Ha! Look at that little moron! And he thought he was good enough for my Penelope..."

Another reason they shouldn't go and occupy Otherville is the same one they used to move back to the beach from the caves. Besides the obvious one I mentioned in post 23,063, they also need to be on the beach to look out for and alert a possible rescue effort. Of course, they could leave a rotating scout team behind, I guess, but, hey....it's another reason. Plus, I'm just a beachy kinda' guy. More swimsuits there. :)

Anybody notice we haven't seen any sign of the numbers in, well, practically all season? I keep looking for them, but don't see them anywhere. And they used to be everywhere. For example, I was looking for them in the wine labels being put on by Dez and The Brother - good opportunity for the numbers, but, alas, they weren't there. Somehow it's just not as fun a show when a key piece of the mythology just ups and goes AWOL.

And a tip o' the ol' margarita to you, James! Hey, I bet that's Hurley's next recreational endeavor. Surfing should be a natural for him; he's naturally buoyant! And he could use a little exercise, if you asked me.

Umm, yeah, sure, but wouldn't they just get dizzy and fall down after awhile?

How would they be able to wave at passing ships? ;)

Yeah, I don't understand the hate for Jack, either. He was willing to submit himself to the Others, and perhaps get thrown back in the cage or worse (let out only to administer to Ben; could have happened), just for the chance to get off the island and mount a rescue attempt. Which also could have all been a lie; he couldn't know. Jack is all about self-sacrifice; he can't help himself. It's who he is.

I don't hate Jack, he means well. But he keeps screwing things up worse than they were when he started (medical treatment aside of course, it's the one thing he doesn't screw up).

He makes bad decisions yet never loses his self-righteous air....he and Locke need to look themselves in the mirror...realize they don't know wtf they are doing, and let Sayid take over :-)

Didn't the monk say that they only produced 108 cases of that particular vintage that Desmond was drinking? That's something.

Okay. now if you showed me this picture outside the context of this thread, I'd never guess it was Juliet. I don't know if its the hairstyle, or all that leg, but I never would have matched the two up.

Part of it may be because they were almost fully explained at the end of the web internet game last summer. You and anyone else here who wants to know what the numbers really mean can go look it up right now - there are plenty of sites out there summarizing the results of the web game.

The writers will still probably eventually get around to going over this territory again in the tv episodes, by why wait for the rehash when you could know right now? Get googling.

really, you don't get the West coast feed? I was under the impression that the East coast Feed covered eastern and central time zones and the west coast offers the feed for pacific and mountain time. Now you have me curious. Time to play with the search engines. At least you give me something more productive to do while I wait for 3:30pm to come along.

I've always been confused by the whole TV prime time thing. Eastern has it 8-11, and Central has it from 7-10. That occurs simultaneously as Central is west of Eastern, so the same feed can be used for both of these time zones. However, that logic doesn't hold for Mountain and Pacific. Pacific prime time is 8-11 and Mountain is 7-10, but that does NOT occur simultaneously because Pacific is west of Mountain.

I once made the comment that Sayyid and a few Losties should raid the abandoned camp to gain materials needed to cobble together a simple radio. It just occured to me, Hurley's VW has everything Sayyid would need to make a simple morse code transmitter/receiver with antenna (wire).
At the right time of day/night, atmospheric conditions allow for insane distances of transmission/reception of simple radio signals, there are hobbyist called 'DXers' that get into this stuff. Sayyid would know about this stuff and would easily be capable of putting it together.

The van would have wire (speaker/lights, etc) for antenna, the radio would give the basics needed for signal generation and amplification, alternator + voltage regulator would give basic electricity when coupled with a little 'windmill' to crank it.

Toughest part would be basic tools, but with enough time I'm sure Sayyid could pull it off.

They already did that. Sayid and Hurley made a radio using the old one they had and some scrap back in season one. They sat on the beach listening to a radio broadcast before the batteries died.

I guess I should have been more clear: a radio transmitter, morse code, to broadcast to the outside world. Send an SOS, that kind of thing. Naturally, that's not going to happen, as the show would be over. ;)

Hmm... perhaps the "Magic Box" that Ben told Locke about was used to wish for a surgeon for Ben, an old girl friend for Desmond, A brother for Mr Echo and a Dad for Locke. It caused all the plane crashes and set us up with where we are today

it is coming up to Christmas in Lost time. If those things keep falling from the sky I'm starting to think the magic box is just a phone line to Santa. He does decide whose been naughty or nice after all and gifts appropriately.

I hope that wasn't the sound of sleigh hitting the water ...

Well guys - the admins let us keep it going longer than usual due to popular demand, but this thread has reached the limit of what can be handled effectively by the forum. We all would like to keep a permanent record of all the early speculation and theories, and that can still be done via this thread - even after it becomes archived.

Switching now will give us a decent base of discussion in the new thread during the last few weeks of this season, and hopefully all the speculation generated by a fantastic season finale (fingers crossed).

Discussion can continue here:
