View Full Version : LOST - on ABC in HDTV - NO SPOILERS
scolumbo 09-22-04, 08:51 PM All I can say is WOW...not your typical network TV show. Looking forward to seeing more episodes.

TheTimm 09-22-04, 08:58 PM Absolutely friggin' loved it! Great PQ, and maybe the best sounding DD5.1 I've heard from a tv show! Can't wait for more! And to think, I considered watching Hawaii or Smallville.
scolumbo 09-22-04, 09:01 PM HD of the island was fantastic. Anyone know where it's filmed?
Looked unbelievable on Comcast.
Did you see the detail in the jungle? WOW!
scolumbo 09-22-04, 09:04 PM I agree it's probably the best audio and PQ of any network show I've seen yet.
Gary Quiring 09-22-04, 09:06 PM Excellent story, excellent PQ and sound. No dropouts or glitches unlike NBC glitch city.
This really has no boundries where it can go story wise. I can't wait to see more!!!!
CPanther95 09-22-04, 09:10 PM Can't believe they didn't show the crash yet.
OK, so the million $$ question is what is the mystery creature?
I think it will turn out to be a giant flesh eating monkey.
What are your thoughts?

Especially since they've already shown a glimpse of the tail breaking off in the previews.

According to the article in the USA Today today, it's shot it Hawaii.
TheTimm 09-22-04, 09:19 PM I think it's pretty smart that they haven't shown the monster or the crash - kinda like holdin' off on showin' the shark in Jaws. Just builds up the suspense more, y'know? They're comin' sooner or later -- should be great.
ralphyboy 09-22-04, 09:24 PM They filmed Jurassic Park in Hawaii, so maybe it's a dinosaur.
Man that was great! Some of the best pq I've seen yet; great sound; and what a plot for a TV series! Looking fwd to next week :)
This show will get real stupid fast. they already need a monster on the show because there is only so much you can do with people stranded on an island, one season and done
chief17 09-22-04, 09:31 PM I thought it was good too. A nice break from the standard cop drama. I thought the PQ was great... much better than some of the other HD dramas.
What is the deal with the funny looking guy form the band? You think he had something to do with the plane crash?
TheTimm 09-22-04, 09:32 PM I'm guessin' he's on drugs.
whitllam 09-22-04, 09:37 PM I enjoyed this show very much as well. It's from the same director (JJ Abrams) as Alias, so I had a good feeling about it. I have a feeling that they will never show the "monster" since the show would immediately turn into the 4th Jurrasic Park flick...there's something about the unknown that helps build the drama a little more.
Have to agree, this pilot rocked! Great use of the sub for a change. All around quality a/v! Can't wait to see next week's episode.

spiff72 09-22-04, 10:40 PM I wish my local ABC broadcast had the DD5.1 feed. Mine was just DD2.0

Yeah, you missed out some great surround sound.:(
no1home 09-22-04, 10:52 PM What is the deal with the funny looking guy form the band? You think he had something to do with the plane crash?
I think so. He was the one who rushed up to the bathroom just before what sounded like an explosion. He was checking out the bathroom when they found the cockpit too.
njfoses 09-22-04, 10:54 PM Definately a good start!! At times with the 5.1 mix i thought i was watching a dvd (obviously with better pq though). The main character Jack was on Kimmel last night and said the show will go into the background of about 12 people and how the island changes them. I'll definately be tuning in again next week.
Mike
After LAX, Hawaii, Joey, Father of the Pride, etc. this program really stands out. We fianally have a semi-original program (okay so it includes elements of a number of genres). I couldn't believe how good it sounded--actually gave my sub something to do and made good use of the surround channels. It may be hard to keep this going for more than one season--but this season should be a good ride.
infinitespecter 09-22-04, 11:02 PM The show just started here, but it is in SD instead of HD. This is a HUGE disappointment for me.
same here.. Los Angeles.. SD only :(
xris2o0o 09-22-04, 11:03 PM I thought it was interesting but im kinda with a previous poster that it will get old quick.. It seems too much like a Jurrasic park type show.. And the main character (Fox) is too much like a Macgyver, he knows everything.. From what i hear though ABC has alot riding on this show, its supposed to be it's premier show..

Perhaps if enough of us call they will change it.
- EDIT: Called and all I could get is an information menu. This really sucks.
argh i didnt interrupt my starwars dvd viewing to see this in SD... flip the switch KABC!
DSperber 09-22-04, 11:13 PM Just got a hold of someone in engineering at KABC here in LA to tell them about the problem.
Let's hope they throw the switch soon.
clubwerks 09-22-04, 11:14 PM I'm so holy freakin' pissed off I could scream.
smirnoffski 09-22-04, 11:14 PM I can't beleive this!!! The only show I am remotely interested in this fall and ABC pulls this!!! What a way to dishearten potential viewers! They better switch or something FAST!!!
rasheed 09-22-04, 11:14 PM I hope they fix it soon. I've waited a long time for this show.

I'm on hold with KABC now.
This is why I hate KABC and KNBC in LA. They have so many problems getting their HD signal out.
As far as I'm concerned, I'm done with this series and these stations. I'll stick with CBS. There's enough good programming on CBS that's handled competently to fill my network viewing needs.
But I'll still watch MNF.
clubwerks 09-22-04, 11:18 PM Morons just flicked the switch. Azzholes.
looks like it flipped :D thanks for buggin them
infinitespecter 09-22-04, 11:18 PM Switch flipped. MUCH better. :D
Twenty minutes into the broadcast we have HD!

Man I thought the LOTR trilogy might kick start Dominic Monaghan's acting career. Just a bit surprised to seem him doing this..but not a bad start to the programme.
**********SPOILER ALERT********** (in case you haven't seen in yet!)
Anyone else think that the pilot wouldn't survive too long after regaining conciousness - especially the way he was inching towards the window. They had to kill off the only person who could perhaps more easily get help thus prolonging the story line - and the programme.
Johnny5.1 09-22-04, 11:34 PM very nice looking images and sound.
HobeSoundDarryl 09-22-04, 11:37 PM 2 things. Maybe the rock band member has a stash of Hershey bars.;)
A series isn't really a hot property unless it makes it to 100 episodes. I liked this first show too, but can they really be "lost" for 100 episodes? Can we still believe a jet plane crash site on a beach- even if it is 1000 miles off course- cannot be found for 5 years?
Or maybe, they'll borrow a page from 24 and try to spread a few days over the next several seasons (if it can make it).
I like this pilot. And I bet a couple of episodes will have legs. But I have a hard time thinking it can go on too long. Besides, i keep thinking Rupert will show up and catch all of the survivors enough fish to live large. ;)
Great pictures and sound. And where I'm from Smallville ran 2 hours later. It too was spectacular- perhaps the best episode of that series.
Raichu11cz 09-22-04, 11:48 PM gilligan wasnt found for 5yrs i think, so it is a real possibility that this show could go on for quite some time.
HiDef Bob 09-23-04, 12:13 AM I am with you guys ... a definite keeper! I was on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Excellent story and PQ and fabulous DD5.1 sound! WOW!
barth2k 09-23-04, 12:17 AM argggghhh. KABC-DT had it in SD so I said screw this I'm watching Smallville. At the 1/2 hr mark I switched back and it was HD.
Looks like they'll rerun the 2hr pilot on 10/2. Will they remember to flip the switch then?
Can someone post the phone# for KABC and KNBC engineering? Maybe somebody should just call them BEFORE every major HD event and remind them to flip the freaking switch.
Tonedeaf 09-23-04, 12:20 AM I tried watching but couldn;t get into the story. Just seemed weird with a guy stumbling around and then walking out with everyone stammering about. Seemed kind of hokey.
Did not watch it in HD. Will have to give it another try.
drsimnal 09-23-04, 12:26 AM Looks like they'll rerun the 2hr pilot on 10/2. Will they remember to flip the switch then?
It was only an hour here. Did I miss something (besides 5.1 since our stupid affiliate can't figure it out).
I think they're no longer on earth (as we know it). The previews for next episode had the transceiver picking up a broadcast that wasn't English. I think that's why no one will find them and will explain weird monsters. Maybe it's like the creature in that Predator movie and can't be seen well. Freaky. What a great show for ABC!
hammerdwn 09-23-04, 12:30 AM Loved the show.
Looks like the pilot episode is actually 2 hours split- first hour this week and second hour next Wed? Then the full 2 hours is replayed 10/2?
Hammer
Chris J 09-23-04, 01:09 AM The guy and the engine without saying what happened was fantastic for a TV movie...
Wow... a great show. The sound was DEFINITELY movie-like. Certainly if your ABC affiliate is not passing DD5.1 you are missing quite a bit. This show was made for high definition.
perilous 09-23-04, 08:04 AM No ABC HD on D*TV...oh well!!!
The previews for next episode had the transceiver picking up a broadcast that wasn't English
Oh well then definately they are not on earth....................
Seems like a cross between Jurassica Park and Alive - has some potential. This show could also continue "off the island" - not sure if that is planned or not - but would be kind of cool with flashbacks and issues down the road and couples being formed (easy to guess one of them).
I think the music guy ran to the bathroom to smoke some dope - disconnected the fire alarm and screwed up some wiring and thereby caused electrical failure - FCC sponsored part :)
the crane 09-23-04, 09:05 AM Great show and the quality of the broadcast was fantastic.
It will very interesting how the show pans out, there are some truly wonderful characters on that island.
There are some interesting questions that I would like to find the answers to...
1. what is with that dog? Must belong to someone else on the island???
2. what is with the old goofy guy with the orange in his mouth? He has to have something do with this all.
3. the black lady said, "the sound is very familiar to me, but I just can't place it." They ask where she is from and she replies, "brooklyn." That has to have something to do with the creature.
4. what was pippin doing in the bathroom?
--------------------------------------------------------------------
If you want to find out more about lost go to:
http://www.aintitcoolnews.com/display.cgi?id=18443
There is a readers review of the first episode, and some spoilers for the 2nd at the bottom.
The group is truly not alone on the island, there are other people. Maybe from a previous wreck?
And they find a polar bear, on a supposed south pacific island.
joeinma 09-23-04, 09:26 AM I thought the show was great, though due to a meeting I had to attend, had to watch delayed via my Tivo rather than in HD. I can not wait to see it in HD from what everyone here is saying! Where the show is from the creators of Alias, did anyone notice that the pilot appeared to be Greg Grunberg who plays CIA Agent Eric Weiss on Alias?
My wife loved it, she thought it was the premiere of "Survivor"
Awesome, awesome show. Finally, something original besides these cop shows. My subs were rocking the whole night and the PQ was outstanding. Can't wait for the 2nd episode. Good job ABC with this gem.
Brajesh 09-23-04, 10:21 AM Terrific show. Has lots of promise! J.J. Abrams (who's also responsible for 'Alias') has to be one of the best people working on TV right now. Finally, something on network TV where I can't predict what's going to happen.
I'm not going to go over the top on this. EVERY ABC show that I've liked, Threat Matrix, Karen Cisco, and on and on, has been dropped after about 6-9 weeks. If ABC has a show that isn't instantly #1 in its time slot, it gets replaced with yet another version of Extreme Makeover. This network is so screwed up they're even talking about dumping MNF. When that happens, I can just remove ABC from my tuner.
CPanther95 09-23-04, 10:24 AM If you could have a "show about nothing" last as long as Seinfeld did, there's certainly enough elements available here to keep this going a long time. It's all about the writing. They're off to a good start, and if they can maintain this level of intensity and production values - I'm extremely optimistic.
HiDef Bob 09-23-04, 11:06 AM I hope they keep the "creature(s)" a mystery for as long as possible. That was the strength of the original "Alien".
And what about the dog ... from the plane or is someone living out in the jungle that has a dog?
The writers have a good thing going here ...
sasha_j 09-23-04, 11:21 AM "Lost" on WMAR-DT (Baltimore), BLEW US AWAY! Amazing pic, amazing 5.1. This is what quality OTA HD is all about! I will be recording and probably archiving the entire series. Very impressive, 720P rocks. Thanks ABC! Thanks WMAR-DT!
mulesqb 09-23-04, 11:21 AM Great show last night, although I had to watch in SD, i still enjoyed it. Can the Magic 8 Ball give us a prediction on how many episodes us D* subs have to watch in SD until ABC-HD is added?
ucsbgaucho 09-23-04, 11:37 AM So... what COULD that creature be? I mean, unless they just go off the wall it could be anything... but realistically, what could it be? I could only think an elephant of some kind, but then an elephant wouldn't grab the pilot out of the cockpit like that and leave him on top of a tree. So, what other possibilities are there?
I assumed it was gonna be they landed on the Jurassic Park island, but then I never saw a goat chained up somewhere, so I figured that couldn't be it. That doesn't leave many other large creatures that live on an island semi-near Fiji.
Very interesting first episode.....didn't watch it in HD though was upstairs. Will have to next week.
Creature could be anything like many people mentioned- Too many possiblities to list.
I don't recall but did they have a preview for next weeks episode?
Great sound and stunning picture here in Northern Cali. Only a first impression but so far it looks like it might be a winner along as ABC doesn't mess with it and keep it coming week after week, unlike what they have done to Alias in the past season. Hard to stay interested in a show when you never know if it is going to be on or not.

I've been watching tennis lately because it's in HD and the picture is amazing...but a good show in black and white is better than tennis in HD!
Malcolm_B 09-23-04, 11:58 AM This show just didn't amaze me as much as most here. Looked like I was watching another sequel to JP. I'll probably give it another episode, but that's about it.

I'll skip a good show in SD if I think I can catch a repeat in HD - in the case of LOST, we know they are replaying the first 2 episodes. After seeing the show, I'd definitely wait for the HD if possible.

I can't believe the "this show can't maintain for long" comments. Come on people! How many cop/medical/forensic dramas can you take? At least this is a bit off the far too well worn path. The production values were great. The look and sound were simply sweet. The writing was not terrible. It will most likely require a bit of latitude in the "willing suspension of disbelief" dept, but geez, it's escapist fantasy/adventure. Who cares how long it lasts? Sit back and enjoy it while it does. It was about the most feature film-like thing I've seen on TV yet so lets just hope that they didn't blow the wad on the opening two part pilot and it stays looking/sounding/feeling the same as it goes forward.
I think the bass player (Merry not Pippen unless my eye deceived me) is simply getting stoned and they are using that as a red herring. ***SPOILER ALERT*** Notice the handcuffs they find in the next installment? Supposedly there was a prisoner on board the plane (I'm thinking maybe the crazy looking old guy, he looked happy to be outside in the rain, reaching to the sky). Perhaps he had something to do with the crash, or not... I do know one thing for sure, I'll definitely be tuning in next week! :)

I hate it when networks drop a really good show. NBC has Mister Sterling 2 years ago and I thought that show was fantastic. It wasn't renewed.

The first thing that came to my mind was the Jurassic Park island or Stephen King's Langoliers.
JayDog_2 09-23-04, 12:23 PM Wow... I didn't get a chance to watch it last night, but I did record it on my HD-TiVo! I'm looking forward to watching it tonight now with all of the good reviews here!
I have to agree here, this show was outstanding, from the first moment it was incredible. My wife loved it also, I really like the drama of the creature, and like others hope they never actually show it. The picture and sound were about the best, it was like watching a movie.

You're failing to take into account that other people have other points of view. If there other choices of good shows at the same time, I'll certainly chose an HD show over a non HD show. And prior to HD on the networks, for a good 5 or more years, I'd given up on the network shows and rarely watched the networks, other than football.
And this was the show's premiere. How could anyone know if it was going to be good. I missed the first 20 minutes while on the phone to KABC in Los Angeles, trying to get them to flip the switch. By then I'd lost interest in the show. If ABC wants to recapture me as a viewer, then they need to act competently and show HD as HD. But KABC has a long history of being incompetent with their HD broadcasts. Sound sync issues, corrupted sound streams, etc. You lose confidence in this broadcaster's ability to deliver HD when expected. Rather than be disappointed by them week after week, I have plenty of other good options for viewing and I'd rather chose another option.
Edit: One other thing. KABC takes a 4:3 SD image and zooms it to 14:9 for it's DTV channel. It looks terrible and I refuse to watch shows that are distorted in this manner. So, no I won't watch a good show in SD from KABC.
rcwalters 09-23-04, 12:44 PM Well, the thing with the tail of the plane just simply breaking off due to turbulence is RIDICULOUS. Then the front of the plane snapped off too. What kind of freakin' plane WAS this? Ah, unless it wasn't the turbulence that caused the crash after all, but some sort of sabotage. Nobody's mentioned that there's an Arabic fellow here. What if he's a terrorist? And of course the rock guy's up to something, and the orange mouth guy. The Asians who don't speak English are acting strange. Lots of possibilities.
It seems like they're trying to suggest that finding the dog and the handcuffs is really weird, but you did see the shoe in the tree at the beginning when Jack first woke up, right? It fell from the plane. There's nothing unusual about a dog being shipped on a plane, he may have just gotten out. The handcuffs may have fell from the plane too, could be a law enforcement officer's, could just be some horny luggage. Or an international spy who didn't want to lose his briefcase. Doesn't seem so weird to me.
I don't understand the monster seeming to step on trees and crush them as he walks, yet they can't see him. What the heck, they already did that in that sorry remake of Godzilla.
But they've got so many questions popping up, all with a "mystery on our hands" sort of bent, this story could go ANYWHERE, and that makes it the best new show so far this season.
I thought of the Langoliers also. The monster may be a new species of dinosaur. Maybe they're in a time warp and are in the past. Maybe a different dimension, or a parallel universe. Oops, I was thinking Star Trek. This really does feel a bit like Planet of the Apes too.
Maybe they wandered way way off course and were shot down by the Chinese, and the monster is a new bioweapon they've been breeding.
I like this show. :D
seandudley 09-23-04, 12:48 PM Yea, I know what you mean, Jerry. Here in Knoxville, TN it has been the CBS affiliate that has screwed up a bunch and not passed the HD programs until someone calls them. They claim they are working on that problem, and lately they seem to be doing better, although they are still messing up some.
Jeremy Tebo 09-23-04, 12:48 PM I gave it a chance, can't say I'll be tuning in next week.
"Hey, let's make a show about people that survive a plane crash and are stranded on an island."
"Nah, that's been done."
"OK, but what if we throw in some kind of mystery monster-thing?"
"Brilliant!"
j.j. abrams is the next david e. kelley. abrams is a genius, & he's the main reason i wanted to watch this show after seeing all 3 seasons of "alias." i'm sure "lost" will be full of plot twists & turns, & i bet abrams already has the first few seasons planned in his head just like he did w/ "alias."
drsimnal 09-23-04, 12:52 PM Let's see...we have an ex-hobbit on the island. He was directed by Peter Jackson, who is now working on King Kong.............who is the creature on the island!!! The season finale will be: to be continued at a cineplex near you! lol (avoided Kevin Bacon references :D )
Seriously, I think I have to go buy an HD DVR as I have a conflict on Wed. nights with the next 8 weeks. The original pilot was 2 hours, but ABC split it up. However, it's supposed to be rebroadcast on Oct 2.
I think I figured it out. "Hey Guys, we crash landed on "Forbidden Island." (aka "Forbidden Planet") Think about it.....anyway, finally, the network has something to throw up against Carnivale. I mean, how many CSI's can we take?

I saw Matthew Fox on Kimmel and I thought I heard him say at the end of his interview that the "creature" was not a monster.
They also talked about that if the show stayed on for several years that Hurley (the big guy) would need to loose weight.

Maybe a giant Kimodo Dragon?
King Kong's son?
The dog morphs into a giant dog?
The heavy set guy with the curly hair looking for food?
John Kerry and George Bush going at it?
Jim :D
I've seen a lot worse shows on TV, and LOST kept my interest for another week. What more can you ask?
I like it so I'm sorry to say it has no chance. I'm with the preivious posters that are concerned that something creative and interesting has no change on tv these days. Now if they could add a reality twist like they vote who to feed the scary monster each week in a castaway tribal council then it would have future!!

having already seen the first 3 episodes (thank you suprnova) I can safely tell you that this series isn't what most of you are guessing it to be.. it really will end up catching most of you off guard just from your guesses about the direction... :)
anyway, I watched it again last night for whatever reason.. I liked it, but what blew me away was the sound mix. wow... I was obviously expecting it to be better than my computer speakers, but talk about an agressive surround mix and LFE effects.. wow....
anyway, keep watching.. most of you seem to have no idea what you are in for. ;)

mpgxsvcd 09-23-04, 02:14 PM Hmm, where I have I seen this story line before? Big scary semi-translucent monster attacks people in the Jungle? I know where I saw this! It was called predator and it was really cool about 20 years ago. However, the HD picture quality was outstanding even if the story was ridiculous.
If it is in HD I will watch it! Give me two politicians debating of who is the biggest liar in DD and 720p and I will watch it! I will take anything in HD over SD any day.
Chris J 09-23-04, 02:33 PM The over night rating are in:
The first round of the "CSI: NY" vs. "Law & Order" battle went to CBS Wednesday night, although not by a knockout. Elsewhere, "Lost" opened big for ABC.
CBS led the night with a 10.0 rating/16 share, beating NBC's 9.4/15. ABC was a solid third at 7.9/13. There was a pretty steep dropoff to fourth-place FOX, 3.4/5. The WB averaged 3.1/5 and UPN 2.3/4.
The Eye network also led among adults 18-49 with a 5.4 rating. ABC and NBC tied for second at 4.7. FOX's 2.4 was good for fourth, beating The WB, 2.3, and UPN, 1.4.
ABC's new drama "Lost" premiered to a surprisingly strong 11.6/19, dominating the 8 p.m. hour. A prime-time "Dr. Phil" special on CBS was second at 7.9/13, while NBC's "Hawaii" took third. The season premiere of "Smallville," 3.5/6, put The WB in fourth. "That '70s Show" and "Quintuplets" averaged 3.3/6 for FOX. "America's Next Top Model" opened its season on UPN with a 2.7/5.
The first of two hours of "Law & Order," 12.2/19, gave NBC the lead at 9 p.m. "Dr. Phil" improved to 10.1/16 for CBS. ABC dropped to third with the return of "The Bachelor," 6.2/9. Two episodes of "The Bernie Mac Show" moved FOX up to fourth. "The Mountain" debuted to a 2.6/4 on The WB, while UPN's "Veronica Mars" managed only a 1.8/3 in its premiere.
At 10 p.m., the premiere of "CSI: NY" averaged 12.1/20 for CBS, beating NBC's second "Law & Order," 10.7/17. "The Bachelor" came in at 5.8/10 for ABC

This story line reminded me of "Land of the Lost" (http://www.landofthelost.com/). Remember that show? I'm waiting for the sleestacks to start coming out of the woodwork. I can't believe that was close to 30 years ago. I'm getting old.:(
It sounds like those of you from California complaining about the show being in SD should be mad at your local affiliate and not ABC.

GrantMeThePower 09-23-04, 03:56 PM I heard J.J. Anyone know anything about this??
While I'm typing, i might as well add that I thought that show was really cool. PQ and SQ, as mentioned already, were outstanding.
I'm also in LA and was pissed that the HD didn't come on right away and tried their main number, which wasn't working so I called their "Breaking News Only" line and talked to them. They put me on hold for just a minute and got back and said that they'd fix it in a second. Once it switched I was very pleased, though by the time they got it on it felt like a bunch of the show was already over.

scolumbo 09-23-04, 04:44 PM Very encouraging to hear that the overnight ratings were solid for this first episode. I'm really getting tired of the cop/crime scene/reality clones. Not only is this the most original new show to come out in a while, it's absolutely made for home theater.
I'm also encouraged that ABC appears to be coming out of their 10 year funk (while NBC continues to slide into theirs).
If I heard correctly there were 48? survivors. That leaves the potential for lots of interesting story lines, besides the obvious ones.
ucsbgaucho 09-23-04, 04:48 PM Hehe, yeah, "at least 48" as "Jack" said to the surviving (for a few minutes) pilot. WOuldn't you think that if you were saying "at least" some number, you'd say "at least 25" or "at least 50"... Not "at least 48"?
drsimnal 09-23-04, 05:10 PM Unless they'd had some sort of count that we didn't see them doing. Would make sense to do, especially with something rattling around in the forest, you might want to count your numbers before sunset and make sure everyone's still there the next morning, which is when Kate, Jack and Charlie set off for the cockpit section.

Sure did. A few months ago his casting in the Lost pilot started rumors that he might be taken out of Alias to be a regular on Lost. Obviously turned out to be nothing more than a cameo appearance. He certainly ain't gonna be on this show again.

I wonder if the 48 was before or after the guy met his fate in the jet engine. I have a feeling a few more will get picked off before long. At least they've left themselves lots of potential victims.

Just afterwards we watched "Smallville" that I Tivo'ed and you talk about a difference....Me and the wife were laughing at some of the acting in Smallville compared to Lost. What the hell did they do to Smallville anyways? It terrible now!

I do hope you're right, but it may be too much to ask for them to develop more than just the 14. At least there is some great potential so far among those 14.
CPanther95 09-23-04, 07:15 PM If not, they may as well put red Federation uniforms on the rest of the cast.

LOL!! Those poor expendable Trekkies just get no respect.
What surprised me about the show was how, with "the creature" running around breaking off trees left and right, there is any jungle left on the island.
I think the dog is smart by avoiding the survivors on two counts:
(1 They will eventually run out of airplane food and get REALLY hungry.
(2 The creature will eventually run out of survivors and get REALLY hungry.

In the DC/Balt area, anything on ABC worth watching in the first place should ALWAYS be viewed or recorded via WMAR-DT.
WJLA-DT often "forgets" to throw the HD switch and does not bother to use a 5.1 encoder.
The difference is night and day. WMAR-DT has earned my respect and loyalty.

I imagine you got them off a 'file-sharing' network? or do you have some other connection...? not that it really matters, just curious... I'd rather see them in true HD and 5.1 anyways.... makes a HUGE difference....
yes, it is a huge difference. the show really is a spectaculr HD presentation.
and I'm not gloating.. I am just tired of hearing "oh, I bet it will turn out like this cliche or that cliche." The show really is one of the more original shows to end up on TV in quite a long time. I have only seen the first three episodes and know a few details of some upcoming episodes, so it's not like I've seen the whole season, but it really doesn't fall into any cliches to start with and doesn't look to be heading for any with what they have planned.

Lost' in flight

ABC has not exactly been the home of popular dramas in recent years, but auds had no problem finding the net's "Lost" on Wednesday night.
The J.J. Abrams/Damon Lindelof survival drama, which has generated the best reviews for any program this fall, opened to surprisingly socko numbers for the Alphabet, dominating its timeslot with the best young-adult rating for a drama premiere on any net (excluding spinoffs) in four years.
ABC sure could use a breakout drama success, as it hasn't had a real hit since "The Practice." "Lost" reps the net's best start for a drama in 18-49 since "Once and Again" in 1999, and in total viewers since "Murder One" in 1995.
"Lost" shared center stage with a strong start for CBS drama "CSI: NY," which prevailed over NBC's "Law & Order" in the first matchup of the crime franchises and bested "Lost" as the night's top-rated program overall.
"Lost" (6.8/20 in adults 18-49, 18.65 million viewers overall) took the 8 o'clock hour in every ratings category from kids to 50-plus. It showed broad appeal in key young-adult demos and among both genders.
Another positive sign was the nice growth on the half-hour, including 16% in 18-49 rating (7.3 vs. 6.3). No drama premiere on any net (excluding "CSI" spinoffs") has opened to a higher 18-49 rating since NBC's "Ed" in October 2000.
ABC Entertainment prexy Steve McPherson credited an exhaustive marketing campaign for bringing viewers to the table, but declined to declare victory in the slot just yet.
"This just makes us want to work harder," he said. "There's a lot of work ahead of us. We're not relieved. ... The build inside the show (at 8:30) shows that viewers think it's a good show."
McPherson noted one of the chief early boosters of "Lost" was former ABC Television Entertainment Group chairman Lloyd Braun. Ironically, Braun ankled the net before he had the chance to enjoy the fruits of the show's initial success.

JayDog_2 09-24-04, 02:17 PM I only wonder where the show will go after the first season....
Kinda like '24'.... I mean how many times can one person be involved in such formidable circumstances? For me that got old after the second season....
With 'Lost' one has to wonder how long they will be "lost"? and if the same 'top' actors are to return for another season, well.... I think you can see where I am going with this....
I guess we'll wait and see....
It's like I said earlier, why worry about how long they can sustain it now? Just enjoy it while it's good and deal with that later. IMO, it's really too bad that networks have to always factor in those kinds of things when putting out shows. I know it's all about money, with the ultimate goal of syndication etc. But as an idealistic member of the viewing audience, it would be nice if they had the latitude to produce shows that are good/original without regard to "long term legs", and once they have run their logical course, just end them. There should be some middle ground between the 2-5 episode mini-series and the "golden" long running series. The creative forces are handcuffed and a lot of stuff that would be really cool just never happens. Or it gets tweaked to fit the "system" before it even airs and we end up with the same old tired stuff.
ron
I always liked the original concept of 24 and never understood why it has never been taken all the way.
a TV series for one season, not because of ratings but by design. There is no season 2 becuase the story was only set for one season.
GrantMeThePower 09-24-04, 03:49 PM I always thought that the best thing "24" could have done was a rotating cast. You keep the main premise of the show being one full day, with each hour being "real time" (minus commericals, of course) but completly change the story and the characters each season.
I mean, it would have been so cool to have season two been with like Christian Slater or something and he has nothing to do with the government, but maybe its an industrial espionage story, or heck, cause we're talking about Lost, maybe one season its a pilot that is downed in enemy teritory and the season is his day of surviving and trying to get out.
You'd have new intriguing stories each year and allow for so many new locations and characters and things, and it'd be cool to keep getting new actors. Kiefer had kind of fallen off the radar before 24, and it would be cool to bring back actors of his caliber each season that for one reason or another, aren't in the spotlight any more, but are quality actors.
Eh, just a thought, and WAY OT, so I'm sorry, but with everyone wondering how this show could keep going on and comparing it to 24, I thought I'd share my ideas.

JayDog_2 09-24-04, 05:19 PM Well, I wouldn't say I am worried about where this show (Lost) would go after the first season.... and I will enjoy it now for what it is....
But it is an interesting topic, because you never see shows that are specifically produced for one seaon only.... and you almost never see shows that completely change a cast to refresh for a new story line.... (I say almost never, becuase you could consider 'spinoffs' in this category)
Anyways, I would guess that networks won't/don't do these things because of money... (Doesn't everything come down to money? :) )
You get to like the main characters, and want to see more of them.... if they completely refresh the cast, well it may as well be a new show.... Also, the networks are aiming to get renewable contracts to produce their shows.... To only produce a one season show would seem to me to not be very cost effective.
Anyways... The fact that 'Lost' is done by some of the same people involved with 'Alias' gives it A LOT of hope... The writers for 'Alias' have done a great job for the last 3 seasons (although it is starting to get a little out there, we'll see how season 4 goes...)
Well, for now, I guess we're all in for a good ride with this new show!

archiguy 09-25-04, 10:59 AM Well, any huge creature that could just gobble up Weiss like that, spattering blood all over the plane nose, that has to be some kind of "Land of the Lost" dinosaur, right? With all the promotion and everything that it received(it was all over espn like every commercial break), it better hold up or it will be gone
but hey i agree with you..it's another show that could be canned anytime
i have experienced the same pain with Miracles and Veritas The Quest as well as Karen Sisco....and Miracles was even better than this though it wasn't promoted as heavily..so we'll see what direction the show takes after 5 eps, if it is around
"But it is an interesting topic, because you never see shows that are specifically produced for one seaon only..."
But 24 actually was originally...
whitllam 09-26-04, 07:15 AM 24 was also designed so that it could conclude after 13 hours (1:00 PM) in case Fox decided to cancel it. Remember the serene helicopter ride? :-) Having multiple seasons of "Lost" will be difficult, because you would almost have to have a new abandoning-type event (i.e. plane crash) every season as well as a new set of characters and actors.
I was talking with some coworkers about Lost and we were thinking it's going to play out like ER.
You have your initial cast and get a solid fan base first. Then each season you have another plane crash that dumps a few more "newbies" onto the island, while a few of the "veterans" leave or die off.
Maybe the rescue boat can only take a few people at a time.
scolumbo 09-26-04, 12:51 PM Assuming there are other people already on the island, maybe they were survivors from the last plane crash. However, it would seem to stretch credibility a little too much to think there would be repeated plane crashes, all on the same remote island. I would like to think the creative team behind this show will deliver something more believable.

As for as the monster is concerned. I dought it's a dinosaur that we're used to seeing in the movies or on tv. No dinosaur would just kill a guy like that and NOT eat him.:D
As far as the jungle being all torn up? What jungle would be the ? That's the only thing I didn't like about it. There wouldn't be any jungle left after awhile.

I tried watching but couldn;t get into the story. Just seemed weird with a guy stumbling around and then walking out with everyone stammering about. Seemed kind of hokey.
Hockey? Just how do you think people would behave after being in a plane crash? Aside from no emergency people & equipment not being there. It's allot like what happened July 19th 1989 in Sioux City, Iowa when a United Airlines DC-10 crashed. Some people woke up in the corn field unharmed. People were in a daze just walking around.
Now if you want to get technical. If a plane did break up at that altitude, there would have been NO survivers at all & no way would the fuselage have been intact like it was.
Oh no! Lets not get too technical and start picking everything apart. I agree with a previous poster and just enjoy it for what it is. We're only in the first week!
JayDog_2 09-27-04, 10:59 AM You know... the 'creature' is probably a mechanical device that was originally built for the purpose of clearing away nature for the development of strip malls and such... :)
Well, maybe that's going too far... but it could be mechanical...? the noises it makes sure sound mechanical.... remember "Dr. No"?
As far as the dog idea... I'm not sure where that's going... Obviously the dog is smart enough to lay low, and keep out of sight.

As a Bulls fan I had to hate the guy, but still found it interesting from an interview I had seen on ESPN about 6 months ago. Apparently it was a gig he had done in High School.

Jim There was also a TV movie of the week starring Richard Thomas ("John Boy" from "The Waltons"). He played Gary Brown who developed emergency drills for just about every potential disaster - including a plane crash. Because of his planning, he was able to provide several rescue teams placed strategically around the air field to provide the quickest response to the crash site (which was certain to happen since the landing gear on one side of the plane had malfunctioned on approach).
Despite the fact the plane cartwheeled and burst into flames, a large number of survivors were rescued, many found wandering aimlessly in the corn field next to the airstrip.

hey, I was actually agreeing with you that something on the island causing the planes to crash is an interesting theory. However, I'm not ready to concede that someone shooting surface-to-air missiles at planes flying at high altitudes causing repeated crashes with survivors on the same island is necessarily plausible.
Having said that, a show with an alleged monster doesn't have to be totally believable. I think it's the monster that's causing the planes to crash. Maybe the monster is actually a giant electro-magnetic device pulling planes to the island. :D
CPanther95 09-27-04, 04:28 PM I love sci-fi, and if it leans in that direction, I'll gladly believe whatever I'm "supposed" to. I've got no problem watching shows about time travel, aliens, a story from long, long, ago in a galaxy far, far, away- etc. If it has good writing and a decent storyline, I'll just let things unfold and trust that things will be explained when they need to be. We don't need a "body a week" to keep our interest if the writing is good, so we don't need to worry (yet) about how they're going to re-supply the island with "fresh meat".

Certainly one of the surviving passengers could have been responsible for the crash...
JayDog_2 09-27-04, 06:39 PM You almost have to guess that someone knows more than they are letting on....
I would almost guarantee that one of the passengers knows a lot more about the situation... which I think is a high-level government test project that has gone awry.... :)
I guess we'll be onto something when 'borghe' stops telling us we haven't guessed correctly yet!
The truth is out there :).
I read a lengthy interview with one of the co-writers (the other guy, not JJ) and he adamantly assserted that the balance of the 48 survivors beyond the principle cast are not simply there to serve as a stock of "red shirts".
This is going to be fun. I just hope they can maintain close to the level of production values as the pilot for the ongoing show.

Amazing twists and turns - the thing with Kate really caught me off guard!
I just want to say (a friendly :p ) "screw you" to everyone who is naysaying this show in the thread. In my book this is BY FAR the best new show of the season!
Nice Job ABC!
Anybody notice what was in the comic book?
A picture of a giant polar bear on one page, and a picture of an alien and some superheroes on another. Well guess what attacked them? Is the island haunted by something that can take the shape of whatever it sees? Maybe it can take the shape of a dinosaur because it's been around for millions of years?
I also think the old loony guy knows what's going on.
labmansid 09-29-04, 09:51 PM I'm not trying to be a naysayer (:p ), I actually think this is a great show so far, but one thing I have been wondering about is if there are these large "things" running around on this tropical island (think mud), why have there been no footprints or tracks discovered? At first when Kate and Charlie found the pilot's wings last week, I thought that was what the real discovery would be, was some sort of track in the mud. But I guess they don't want to reveal too much too soon and so no clues yet.
There are some real surprises in store for us obviously!!
That Druggie guy with the accent needs to be the next one wiped out along with that annoying blonde girl, in the end the three remaining people will be The party of five guy, the Kate girl and The iraqui guy ,all the rest are victims i would bet.

Why does this show look so good!?!??!
This is the best looking HD I have seen to date! Every scene is crisp and clear. Is there a new type of camera or something that they used? I am very impressed so far.
Can't believe this is network TV. You think maybe they are trying to give HBO some competition for original series? My only complaint (tongue in cheek) is that the episodes are too short. Seems like when I get really engrossed it ends. This is going to be a great series. How soon do you think we'll see clones on the other networks? Leno even joked about it
one night this week (Lost in New York, Lost in LA, etc). At least I think it was Leno.

ditto on the episode being too short. i feel like the show just started, and then it's over!
i also agree that the pq & sq is stunning! it blows away "law & order" & even "csi." maybe it's 'cause abc is 720p & my tv is natively 720p.
i don't know if i can stand waiting week after week for each episode. i might just have to record the whole season on my htpc & then watch it over a weekend!

Excellent catch, Chris! I ran the Spanish on the second page of the comic book through an online translator, and it gave me an idea. Possible big spoiler if I'm right:
The guy on the left (black word balloons) says "my plan is to die", and that he's "plagued with diseases" because of what "Gunther and you" did. The guy in the middle replies that "we understand you feel that what we did half a century ago was bad." OK, so what happened a half-century ago in the South Pacific? Something that would cause growths like on the comic character? Above-ground nuclear tests in the Bikini Atoll. Think mutations in a closed environment among species with a short life span. Lots of generations over 50 years. That doesn't explain the polar bear (if that's what it was), but it opens the door for all sorts of freaky creatures that break the conventional rules. A radioactive hot zone (which that region still is today) also explains why no one would want to to send in rescuers.

Anyhow, this is still the best looking, best sounding television program I've ever seen. But you didn't change the channel, did you? Of course not. The networks are not digging their own grave. I doubt anyone in this thread who likes this show would decide not to watch it because of the commercials. Network shows = commercials. Without them, the shows wouldn't exist. And for a popular show, it's easier for the networks to have more commercials. It's a fact of life.
Frankly, I'm not sure I can fault the networks for their commercials. That's how they make their money. That's what enables them to buy their DTV equipment. That's what allows them to create HD transfers. As it is, the networks aren't really getting extra revenue because of their HD showings. Sure, I hate the commercials. That's why I don't watch network movies. I'd rather watch a movie on DVD than on the networks. But for shows available only on the networks, I've learned to live with the commercials. On the other hand, I record many of the networks shows I watch on an HD PVR. Then I fast forward through the commercials. That may be the best solution for network viewing.

When the team went to higher terrain to try and send a message on the transceiver they were very hesitant not to use the transceiver until they were sure to get a good signal because of battery consumption. Once the transceiver was finally turned on the team heard a distress message from another individual that had been going on for sixteen years. How could that distress message be constantly playing for sixteen years from another transceiver without running down the batteries? Must be using rechargeable batteries.

The pilot was a 2-hour episode, but ABC aired it as two separate 1-hour episodes.

Based on the episode title that showed up in the program info last night, I'm guessing that the "Pilot" was produced as a two-hour TV show, which ABC decided to split into two one-hour shows. Saturday's broadcast is the whole two hours.
