To guys based in UK should be mentioned- from experience they're competent and helpful. They're not particularly vocal here, but it'd be hard to run a Barco etc on the cheap here without them.

It has always been just been a hobbie for me till somehow I ended up with a bunch of PJ's. Still have a Marquee 8000 thats ready to sell just no time to do that. That goes for a Barco 1100 and a 1200 that have been sitting around for a couple of years, just no time to mess with them. Worth to much to junk, not worth enough for me to sell.

Actually, no. Its OPEN to any member making contributions for the benefit of other members. Though some members do sell their goods and services, they freely give of themselves on this forum offering help and advice just for the asking.

Art buys a couple of CRT's, as far as I know contributing nothing to betterment the animal kingdom or mankind (the mankind portion might be argued) and he makes the list....

I can take a hint. I am going to stencil G90 on my NEC. Will that help the my cause?

Just being annoying. I don;t even have the XG out of the road case yet. One day when the XG is hung, I will make a phone call to one of the folks that is, and should be, on the list to get it set up right. I can hardly wait!!!!

Come on CMRA, why are YOU doing this list? You haven't been around the CRT forum long enough to compose such a list. Ask QQQ and Ferret what they're specialties are? Along with Art, these are VERY well known members, and you don't even know who they are.

How about the midwest?

I'll do anything within a twelve hour drive from DE-troit, but prefer to make those in MI happiest. Some reasons to go to Atlanta, but only with Terry's permission, and at least once a year in CA. I prefer to only fly on the ground in my Audi A4 wagon! Too many tools to check on an aeroplane.

'twas definately Doug Hanks ( userid = douglas.hanks ). He stormed into the CRT forum in early '02 and jumped in feet first. Never listened to anyone's advise and as a consequence completely screwed up his NEC as a result. Still, it was an interesting period, and he had a knack for ruffling other members feathers with his unique approach to things. I'm sure most of the older members here may recall his altercations with KennyG !

I suggest salvechris to be on the list. He is well known as the "Barco king" in Germany. He tweaked his 1209/s to the max and had the best luminance tracking I ever saw. When Björn Roy and salvechris talk together about videophile things it is like two gods are speaking. When Oliver Klohs joins the round at least then you'll know that you know nothing! ;)

I don't know that I would add myself to that list in terms of specific CRT tech support. I'm more than happy to be a video enthusiast, but my technical experience is rather amateur compared to many on the list. But I certainly don't object to it if there are people out there who think I'm helpful, because I have spent a lot of time with a lot of very nice projectors and setups ;) My strongest points are acoustics/audio, and video overall, rather than specifically CRT related, but if I can provide help (especially on the techy side of video, digital video, etc) I will!

Hey... nobody noticed I'm not "marcorsyscom" anymore. I got tired of you guys mangling it.

For anybody that was curious, it stands for Marine Corps Systems Command. I'm not a jarhead... I was an AF officer for 10 years though. I had a project several years ago with MarCorSysCom and I needed to create a web server real quick for a demonstration. So I created one called "marcorsyscom". After the project was over, I still had the web server and e-mail address, so I started using it for all my junk e-mail to keep spam away from my real accounts. When I signed up for this forum, I used my spam address... hence "marcorsyscom".

Um, my specialty is great calibration by my even greater 15/15 vision on Barco, Electrohome, NECXG, and Sony G70....

Drawbacks = When I cant figure it out, I send it to Curt :^)

I'm actually in the midst of a tube swapout (waiting for housing to be removed from VDC) of a NEC XGLC blue CRT to a Sony G70.

Done much more in the past, but too tired to type more at this point :^)

I think Cliffy bids on more PJs than I do. But I keep my Marquees and only continuously dabble with mass-quantities of cheap low-end toys. Cliff snags some bigger fish.

I think this "specialty" (or disease ;)) is very common in this forum... We need to come up with a name for it...

multi-CRT-itis?

symptoms:

An unexplainable urge to acquire and setup as many CRTs as possible, just for the first hand knowledge of learning and tweaking them.

Also an unavoidable impulse to give a good home to any CRT that is being offered at pennies on the dollar for what we've seen similar units go for in the previous months.

You know those old ladies that have 25 cats... well, Cliff and I (and others... you know who you are) have adopted maybe 25 cRts.

My wife has said 9 times... if I bring another stray home.... but she recently mistakenly said I should only seek PJs better than what I already have... fair enough! game on...

Joking aside for a second, today I had the pleasure of meeting with Walter Allen of Elite Video. I went to Elite to buy couple of things for My Ampro 4600HD. I had about an hour of undisturbed brain picking time. He was just about a question ahead of me and had an answer for everything I asked. It was obvious that there is alot going on upstairs there and that if he's forgotten anything, it's more than I'll ever know. A super nice guy to chat with. I look forward to meeting him again some day. I had hoped to meet Eric Gellar while I was there but he had to leave for a home emergency. Walters shop looks just like Curt's but all Ampro's.

I have helped people out here in Colorado with Electrohomes , but that's about it!:) after reading Gary's post about his NEC I couldn't run any faster in the opposite direction if I found one. Wonder how I got missed?! :( After all, I've been a factory certified tech for, or have had experience with at one time or another, almost every projector manufaturer there ever was - specialize in E-home, but also Barco, NEC, Sony, Ampro, Zenith, Mitsubishi (yea, they actually made projectors!!), Panasonic, GE, Seleco, Harmon (yea, I'm not proud of that one either), and a couple others I've forgotten. I feel so neglected...I guess I'll just go crawl back into my hole now....(sniff, sniff).... :(

You didn't get missed, when CMRA started "the list":rolleyes:, he told everyone "who wanted to" to add their name to it. I can't remember who it was (since I'm getting senile), but their name was put on the list by someone and they "wanted it removed", so if anyone didn't put their name on, it was assumed they didn't want it on. Where were you hiding when CMRA kept bumping the thread asking for names? :confused:

Every time I don't see a post for a long time from Mike Newman or some of the other really knowledgable techs. I start to worry. " Is this the end, have all the great ones bailed out"? :( It's nice to see them come back after a while, make sure this board is still breathing. I wish this hobby would get a shot in the arm, something to stoke the fires again. I guess we can only hope that VDC does something to rekindle CRT technology and give us the next step forward. Something like the LC optics or EM foucs must have done back when they came out. If I lived near VDC I would down there all the time suggesting new (and proabaly stupid) :D suggestions for their R&D program , if they even have an R&D program. The trouble is the money required to do this and possible return from the HT industry is probably more of a gamble than any wise company would be willing to take.

I've been planning to shoot Mike an email on his where-about's. I usually send emails or PM's to the MIA's.

Mike Newman is one of my highest regarded on the Marquee (next to Tim). Tim is King, but the forum still needs Mike as well. My expertise with the Marquee is more component level repair of the modules, for which I've been able to successfully repair every board in the Marquee, but I still look to Tim and Mike for assistance. I started out late on the Marquee (1996 -97), and at that time I had a crew of tech's doing most of the field work for me.

A few years back one of the local commercial A/V operations was thinking of also doing Hometheater Systems. So they called me in to advise on what would be the best way to approach this. I immediately mentioned Mike's name. I did that based on his many years experience in the commercial arena, as well as the high end HT systems that he's been doing for consumer systems, that are as sophisticated as the high end commercial systems that we're both familiar with. Plus it would have been nice to design and work with a tech on his level from time to time. The owner of the commercail operation wanted to go for the best systems, and he wanted the absolute best technical support for this. Mike was being pulled in as a consultant to develope the consumer end of the business, to reflect the successes that he has acomplished in Texas. And would still be used from time to time as a consultant. The owner put the HT idea on hold because his wife was having a baby. He has since had a second baby. He called me a while back to remind me that we'll still going forward with this once his kids get a little older, and I told him I still know how to contact Mike.

Mike, if you disappear for good and change your home number, let me know...never mind, just don't disappear again.

I think we are our own victims especially here on the CRT Forum. We are the hard liners that choose to be their own person when it comes to their hobby or preferences and at the right time to share it with the family.

As CRT technical support declined from the mfgs we basically became CRT tech support 'real time' where your not sitting on hold paying for the phone calls and we became 'the site' for free information that took years for us to build from trial and error and factory certifications.

During this time we had a great group of people contributing to CRT display devices and it was evenly shared and fun but then it started to grow to fast to keep up with, we had more members, more categories, more freqs, more sources, and more research that took up more then hobby or relaxation time it maxed what we could physically / mentally do.

I dont think we are gone I just think we need to rejuvenate before the system shuts down.

It would help if they put the 'Important CRT related items' back up so the past years could be shared and found by newbies. Doug

I am working on my website as we speak.

I think an area for calibrators/technicians on a 'pro/HT nut/will-work-for-beer-money" is a really good idea.

I'll talk to my web guy about it to incorporate it in there. Look for an update over Xmas sometime..:)

THanks, but I think I'll leave documents to download off the site. There's enough manuals on the c_rtcinema.com website, and some information shouldn't be released..;)

But what I will put up is pix of the guts of projectors, so when someone asks you to email a pix of where the C board is located in an NEC, Barco, etc, then click on my site and it should be there. It will also show some user adjustable internal controls, like the focus controls on the XG's, and will warn those that are tempted what controls NOT to adjust.

So, something similar to Tim's site, but for other models and makes.

Yeah, Jason is one of ours. Great guy, and a much abused commodity, I think a lot of AVS'ers can attest to that.

I think CousinIT deserves a nomination as well. Loves his Barco's and has helped out a friend of ours on numerous occasions.

Also, Z-photo, Pete has reminded me to go home to my wife after many long hours here with his great Avatars. That is not directly CRT or HT related, but noteworthy none the less.

I could take pictures of my theater room, but you wouldn't see anything. ;)

I do pretty much do it myself, which is why there are cables everywhere. I actually have 3 setups if you count my living room with a 116" wide High Power and the screen I put up in my bedroom. One time I had 40+ people from the AVS forums over for a huge comparison, but those days are mostly over. My dedicated theater room has black velvet over the ceiling, walls, and floor for the front 2/3rds or so and more around the back. I've only mounted one projector on the ceiling as I go through stuff fairly quickly and now like to use shelves and stands with projectors a little overhead so I can use a High Power or similar screen. This is all digital stuff, but I just ordered a 20 gain Mocom curved screen that I think some CRT people will be interested in hearing about or coming over to see.

My theater room is mostly for me and small groups and I use the living room for larger groups. It has off-white walls, but most people like watching in there because it has 2 story ceilings that I think add to the environment. Especially with big IMAX movies and things. I used to have a picture of what people called my "drive in movie screen", but not with me.

BTW: I'm not married. I wouldn't make any woman put up with all this. If I was married I would probably just have the one dedicated room. But its my house, so I can do what I want. :)

I would think Chris Collins (Mysphyt here on the forum) from Collins Custom Electronics should be added for Michigan. He's an electrical engineer who has done many CRT installations and mods. He designs theaters and acoustic calibrations. A real one-stop-shop. And he's housebroken (not all are ;) )

I don't see a connection. Even the resellers here are value added. They freely share with forum members and are an excellent source of quality hardware members don't hesitate to recommend. It's not like they are merchants or etailers in the traditional sense. Besides that they only make up a small percent and their service to members far outweigh their financial gains. They are unique and serving a niche audience who profits from their help and knowledge.

PS: The only quibble would/should come from 'like' sponsors who pay advertising fees to AVS.

Maybe a couple of "who was who" in CRT land?

First, Arthur Ray Tucher who was the first to patent liquid cooled CRTs for the projection industry, he had the rights back in the late '70s and early '80s when ESP was formed, which became ESPrit Projection Systems, which went on to be AmPro.

And Phil D'leseo (damn, I know that's spelled wrong. Sorry Phil.) who was the chief engineer at ESP.

Both of these guys were true pioneers.

We all know who to thank for that now don't we ;) I agree with Chip. Banner adds here costs thousands/month. If I was someone paying that, I'd be kinda peeved if another reseller had their URL as part of a sticky in a thread at the top of a forum... Sure, it's a bit more hidden, but I could see why someone paying would not like it. I think Alan's would be doing the right thing to not allow such links, but that's just me. In the end they're not our rules - we just have to follow them.

I was going to add a link in my signature that said "CRT projector setup guides & manuals available here: CurtPalme.com". Not to promote sales for Curt, but to help people out as I really think it's been helping a lot of people. It's a fine line though, so I decided against it.

CMRA, this is probably best for a new thread rather than dilute your original, well done thread. ;)

The (912?) 12" is rumored to put out bunches of light, but not be as good for HT as the 9" from Barco. Prolly worth a ton of money though. I'll give you $500!

I just got a bead on a 12" Barco. Once long ago I read such an animal existed. In particular, the green tube won't luminate.
Obviously rare, should I pass at any price? Does even Curt support such a monster?

A pair of them were sold pn Ebay about 10 months ago and brought about 5k for the pair. The seller claimed the units came out of GM in Detroit and that tubes were perfect. :rolleyes: I checked to see what "new" 12" tubes for it went for and was told about 3K each. :eek:

I saw one a few years ago and wasn't impressed, it DIDN'T have the latest chassis design. I would MUCH rather have a 909 than that pig. ;)

If I remember correctly it was CMRA who added the names in the beginning without contributions and nominations from others.

Besides this is meant to keep track on the people on this forum who can contribute to the CRT-community right? And since pretty much every contributor has their handles listed I don't see why they shouldn't be listed in alphabetical order instead of in random order.

Or maybe it would be ok with you if it looked like this instead....

I don't want to start an argument, but it will probably turn into one. It depends on what Art means by "Best picture quality available". Does he mean that his is the best or that there are some as good but none better? If it is the former, than I would disagree. Art may have the best CRT theater (which is different than video performance), but that can be argued as well. Cineramax installed a G90 with a custom ray traced Torus in a home theater. That may be as good or better. Antorsae and Gino have Blendzilla. A blended CRT is probably better than a stack for widescreen theaters. This is not to say that Art's stack isn't great, because it is. One thing I don't like about his set up is the use of a perf screen. I have never liked perf screens, but that is a personal preference. Now let the flames begin.:)

I will be included for a New Jersey contact for Barco set up and HD calibration/ custom installs. Worked closely with transmission for ESPN,ABC,MTV live events and shows. I am aslo a Satellite communications tech for 1 of the largest satellite manufactures. Greg E has taken Barco's to another level that I have found deserve to be commended.

actually I based my presidency on how many HT get togethers we've had at different places. since my place is central to everyone and the most frequent spot I made it the command center.:D

I still have my 9500LC, modified several ways, and do not have a digital PJ except for
a broken InFocus X2 that I haven't gotten around to fixing. (A simple problem.)
