View Full Version : Can anyone recommend a wireless keyboard with built in mouse for htpc?
Ill make it really easy for you. I bought both. The BTC 9019's joystick it total garbage and you'll never be able to be quick on like you can with the X-Gene. My BTC 9019 is sitting in the closet, brand new still in its box.
I really can't make up my mind between the X-Gene and the BTC 9019. They both come out to the 53 dollar price range with shipping...any one who has both can recommend one? Which has the better mouse?
Thanks guys
fitbrit 08-08-07, 10:25 PM I've had two BTC9019s, and the joystick's not bad on the version I, the version III is a bit harder to fine control. Also the III doesn't have the optical disc eject button any more. Overall it's not bad. I relaly want a Dinovo Edge but it's 3-4x the cost and some say the trackpad is too small..
rajdude 08-13-07, 12:22 PM I highly recommend this one:
(Adesso)
http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16823166047
I have used it....it works absolutely fine. Does go into sleep mode after some time. A simple key stroke (any key) wakes it up.
It has worked across floors too....although the response speed slows down
You guys heard it from me first on AVS Forum:

I'm not sure if it has both mouse buttons on the right side of the keyboard or not. If it is, it might be better than the x-gene keyboard.
LeCramp 08-20-07, 07:05 AM Logitech diNovo Edge (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard/devices/192&cl=gb,en) - It's a damn fine keyboard. But it's expensive. Still, I love mine. Sleek, effective, long battery life, easy to use in the dark.

I just go one of these and i love it ..form the looks to the lights its fantastic and perfect for home theater...
i see that some of you got this keyboard as well, have any of you got the pad and the volume control to work on linux ? or even mythtv?
Any Logitech diNovo Edge owners here?
I was just wondering is that round touchpad-like on the right side used for a mouse functionality like on laptops?
If so how good is the accuracy on this touch pad? hard to navigate?
pcalchemy 11-03-07, 06:36 PM XGene just released a Media Center keyboard:
http://www.x-gene.biz/products/wirelesskb/wirelesskb.html
Provides Media Center specific functionality like the Microsoft MCE Keyboard but has a better pointer (trackball) and is RF.

this keyboard is just awesome. got lucky and picked mine up from best buy brand new for $60. the round touchpad is just like on laptops, and is extremely accurate. best keyboard out for htpcs users, bar none.
pcCinema 11-03-07, 10:27 PM Well the new MS keyboard with lighted keys that's also in the $200 range might give it a run for it's money but I have not seen nor tried it. I bought two of the Dinovo Edge's and I agree, Best keyboard I have ever had for HTPC use. I do wish the touchpad were square or just larger for more moving room but I really can't complain about it at all.
I absolutely LOVE these keyboards. Best $40 (well $80 since I bought two) I have EVER spent on computer parts.
The scrolling feature on the sides of the touchpad is not as nice as a gateway laptop scroll feature I have tried, but it does work well and works in both directions whereas the gateway works only to vertical scroll.
If I were to ask for a better version I would ask for dedicated media keys and that all keys be lighted. However I wouldn't want to trade the great battery life or small size for those features either.
It's just a gorgeous keyboard that works beautifully and would look good on anyones coffee table at any price. If you have to pay $100 or closer to MSRP or whatever don't think twice, it's worth it.

pmcdunnough 11-13-07, 01:42 AM This appears to be the same keyboard as the nmediapc one, which can be purchased for less than $50 at newegg, directron, etc. Has anyone else used the nmediapc keyboard?
I am using the nmediapc rf keyboard now. I use it with a Mac Mini connected to a HDTV and it works great. I like the size and the layout. The one issue I have is that the trackball has been getting grainy. It's as though it's scratching on something and there is no way of cleaning it. I've had it for 4 months and the non-smooth trackball is really bothering me (I loved it when it was smooth). It's optical so it's not supposed to happen. Sigh...I tried using sandpaper on it (there was a hint to that effect for another model) and it seems to have worked.
Does anyone know how to clean these trackballs? They can't be removed without taking apart the keyboard.
Logitech has a Bluetooth keyboard for the PS3 which seems appealing and it's reasonably priced. Their Edge product looks nice (except the bottom which is red) but the price is a bit crazy....
I think a lot of these keyboards (nmediapc, etc...) are actually identical. There is no good keyboard for HTPC use in my opinion. They are all mediocre...
philip
pmcdunnough 11-13-07, 02:25 AM is that the nmedia keyboard?
I had nothing but trouble with that one, hopefully you did much better...
It is and it's been fine for me. The one problem is the trackball which has begun to scratch. Would you know how to clean it? Can't seem to get any answer from the company...

pmcdunnough 11-13-07, 03:50 AM Just had to post on something good I bought today for my Mac mini HTPC ...
A "2.4GH'z Wireless TrackBall Keyboard" (sic Hz).
The brand printed on the actual keyboard is Acro's.
Pic on their website - google for acrosjp, follow your nose to ASB-KY2.
(Sorry first, maybe only post so I can't post links.)
Comes with drivers for Windows but best of all this works out of the box for me on Mac OS 10.4.9, excluding the dozen or so multimedia keys.
Seems to be the same manufacturer as the Scorpius keyboards mentioned in a post above, as I also have the Acro's branded Scorpius joystick version. Note that the joystick version had some annoyances on Mac OS - ghost keypresses when multiple keys were pressed, and no key "held-down" status - thus no auto-repeat. Pic of that at their site too under ASB-KY1.
The joystick on that crapped out after less than a year, which is why I bought the new trackball version. The trackball one has no keyboard annoyances on Mac OS, and again it comes with Windows drivers so probably fine on a PC.
Other differences from the joystick version are an on/off switch, 2 AAA rather than AA batteries, and the bottom left key being Ctrl, not Func.
Got mine from Akihabara for $80. Hope this helps someone else.
Cheers,
Nick.
I am using the nmediapc rf keyboard with my Mini. Unfortunately the trackball is sticking and there doesn't seem to be any way of cleaning it. The keyboard you have seems to be the same as the iOne keyboards. They have one with a joystick/mouse and no multimedia buttons (iOne Scorpius P20) and the other one is a multimedia version with a trackball and multimedia buttons at the top(iOne Scorpius P20MT ) . I assume your kb is similar or identical to the latter? I was hoping to get the P20 as it's smaller. What exactly was the problem wit OSX and that keyboard? I am not quite clear on the ghost key thing and multiple key pressing. Can you clean the trackball in your new keyboard? Also, iOne claims you can recharge batteries via USB with that model. Is that the case with your keyboard?
Are both keyboards well made or do they feel cheap (like my nmedia I suppose, although it's passable)?
I think I've narrowed it down to the Adesso or the iOne (not sure of the model) or Logitech's Bluetooth kb for PS3 - Mediaboard Pro. It has no command key but one could map the Ctl key to that...
Sigh...choices and all poor. Why can't Apple make a proper Bluetooth keyboard with an integrated trackpad.... Perhaps an iPod Touch could act as a keyboard/mouse?

denyart 11-13-07, 10:43 AM I use the DiNovo Edge. I got it for 79.99 (assuming Logitech comes through on the $50 rebate). I have to say it is nicer than I thought considering some of the complaints I have seen about it. Of course for the regular price it ought to be really nice. Anyway I just wanted to say they are on clearance at my local BestBuy, and many online stores had rebates recently. So if you are interested in this keyboard it appears to be coming down in price. Perhaps they are working on a replacement with more "real" shortcut keys.
BTW, for those interested the mouse/touchpad feature of this keyboard is very nice IMO. It works just like a good laptop touchpad except the shape is round. Scrolling is done vertically or horizontally by activating it on one of the little scroll markers and then circling your finger around the touchpad as if you were spining an analog jog control. Kind of nice, but kind of wierd at first. The last thing I really like about it is that it works for the occasional BIOS action on my machine. It is recognized at boot as a keyboard. I think it may be a problem with older computers though because I believe it actually shows up as a hub first and then 2 USB HID devices. This may confuse some older computers (not sure, I have not seen many people discuss BIOS abilities for keyboards).
shoeheel 11-29-07, 01:29 AM I just picked up a SpecResearch (X-Gene) 2.4GHz Wireless Mini Keyboard w/ Optical Trackball, P/N 01027, from Newegg.com.
It appears to be the same as the Adesso WKB-3000UB and Interlink Electronics VP6210.
It works great, though walls, nice range, etc. My question is, how do I turn it off and on? There is no on/off switch or keypress, that I can find. I'm concerned about draining the batteries when I stuff it in my laptop case (that might result in keys being pressed.)
Thanks in advance!
It goes into powersave mode automatically. You just hit any key or mouse button to wake it up.

I knew about the powersave. What I'm afraid of is putting the keyboard in my computer case, which is a tight squeeze. When I put it in there, a key or keys will likely be pressed and held that way. With these permanently pressed keys, I'm afraid it won't go into powersave. Also, I'm worried about it continuously waking up as I travel with it in my laptop case.
I was hoping someone would know of a combination keypress to turn it off and on. Otherwise, I'll have to add my own switch.
shoeheel 12-01-07, 11:42 PM X-Gene customer support let me know there is no way to turn the keyboard off, so I added my own switch. Problem solved.
Doesn't it just go to sleep on it's own?
kamadzu4 12-16-07, 02:29 PM Looking at everything and keeping cost in mind, I had finally narrowed things down to this one from Vidabox (http://www.vidabox.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=83) and this generic from X-gene (http://www.x-gene.biz/products/wirelesskb/wirelesskb.html - the one on the bottom).
I went with the Vidabox version since I figured that it was designed by a company that specializes in HTPC's, and just received it yesterday. The keyboard itself is pretty reasonable, and reminds me of a laptop. However, the trackball mouse is pretty terrible, with a very rough feel and very slow movement across my 1920x1080 Vista desktop. And, one thing I forgot entirely about was a scroll wheel, which this model does not have. I'll play around with it for a bit more, but will most likely end up returning it.
So I've been thinking more about the X-gene, and the more that I have researched it, it looks like there is 1 model but it comes "rebadged" under multiple manufacturers' names and model numbers. For example:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823130006
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823166079
http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0260283
And, of course, the standard X-gene: http://www.directron.com/01027.html
As far as I can tell, these are all exactly *the same* piece of hardware. I am kind of surprised that Newegg would have 2 of these with a $10 price difference... I guess the question would be whether there is any advantage to getting anything other than the cheapest one I can find?
The other thought that keeps gnawing at me is the Logitech diNovo Edge, but they are *so* expensive! How did those $40 deals work?
denyart 12-16-07, 07:34 PM I don't know about a $40 deal, but my $50 rebate has been received and is "processing" with Logitech's rebate fulfillment center. The end cost for me will be $79.99+stamps and time. Not sure it is worth it, but it is a nice keyboard. I have never tried any of the trackball keyboards though.
bjmarchini 12-16-07, 08:12 PM have you considered a seperate keyboard and mouse. I use a basic Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse combo.
95% of the stuff I just do with a mouse with is smaller than a remote. I grab the keyboard to type in an occasional web adress or whenever I need text.
I like the microsoft because it is fully functional, but it is also light and slim. Some wireless keyboards are monsters.
I got it for $30 off newegg about 6 months ago on sale.
I had an expensive remote, but found it was easier to just use a mouse in my setup. I just use the armest of my chair to move the mouse on as it is optical. works great.
kamadzu4 12-16-07, 08:41 PM Is the $50 rebate still valid?
The problem with a discrete mouse is that then there are 2 devices, mousing on the armrest of my couch seems kind of cheesy, and I believe I read that the inexpensive Microsoft solution referred to above has terrible range...

you would be surprised how elegant a simple black optical mouse can be. I look at it as kind of like the controls that Asguard used on stargate SG1 on their ships
You need to remember that a wireless mouse has no "tail" so it is a simple round mouse with 3 buttons.
When you sit on your chair, you either hold the remote in the air or lay you arm down and push button the remote with your arm on the armrest. With the mouse on the armrest, you can program it so that smal movements are amplified as you don't need absolute precision like you want on a desktop.
another great feature of the mouse it that is universal and does not need to be programmed. you can even enable the virtual keyboard to completely eliminate the need for a keyboard if you wish.
birdwax 12-16-07, 09:02 PM Has anyone tried the keyboard attachment for Xbox 360 controllers? It probably isn't the ideal solution for most people (the keys are Blackberry-size), but it might work for those who only use keyboards for simple tasks like typing the occassional web address. I'm guessing that there is a way to use the controller itself as a mouse cursor.

tha5150 12-17-07, 02:34 PM i am looking for something to control the xbox aswell. i have my laptop conected wirelessly to my router, xbox 360 is hard wired to the router and i stream movies through the xbox on my plasma. now, this is my question. can i somehow keep my laptop in my office and just have the wireless keyboard in the living room? i would imagine it is about 40 feet away. (laptop to couch) is there a wireless keyboard w/integrated mouse out there that will connect to my router? is this even possible? i am trying to get it so i can keep my laptop connected to my external hard drive and stream the movies from there.
i hope i am explaining this properly to you guys.
thanks for any help on this matter.

Wow! you are gonna need one of those super expensive remotes that are like mini computers for that I thiink. good luck
tha5150 12-17-07, 04:53 PM well, i found this. (http://www.adesso.com/products_detail.asp?productid=336) doesnt this have good distance on it? says 100ft and it isnt IR, so i can keep everything in the office, right? this is the only one with this long of range i have been able to find. also, would be cool to have the option to program your tv on a keyboard aswell.
This is the same one that most of us ended up using... including me. It goes by at least one other name. This one kinda took place of the famous Airboard.

Yep, I can see selling that... "Chill baby, don't think of it as a mouse. Just think of it as the controls of that Asgaurd battleship on that SciFi show... Yeah baby, science fiction... ...it is what every lady wants their livingroom to look like you know?"

denyart 12-17-07, 08:23 PM One quick question, can't you just stream the movies straight off the external hard drive into the XBOX360? I know if you use the dashboard and look for attached media it can play mpeg2 and wmv as well as divx and xvid. It will not right to the USB HDD, but it can play supported formats off of it.
PWNKAKE 12-17-07, 08:57 PM Funny this thread is bumped cause i looked through it last night and looked at the DiNovia and the M$ 7000 AGAIN.. lol (been looking at them both since summer). Both looked like what i wanted.. but i've been to cheap to buy a new one since the old blue tooth wally world special was working fine.. $49.99 baby! WOOT. lol.
Anyway, i was at a local PC parts place i frequent to pick up a new PSU when i find a what i thought was a Microsoft 7000 Keyboard and mouse but i thought, wow, i thought it was a darker color than this. I asked the guy at the register who got the owner who told me it was the 8000 and a "flagship" he called it and just kept talking about the fact that it is backlit lol. The owner told me he special ordered it for a customer. The guy went on to tell me this keyboard had been the "BANE" of his existance lol. The customer had told him that it came without the bluetooth dongle that it connected with and that it didn't work out of the box just connecting with the base.. DUH.. lol. So, it has no scracthes on it but had quiet a few weird smudges like grease or something. Anyway, it was not in a box, but wrapped up in the foam padding they come in sometimes with the charging base around it, and the mouse taped to it. Owner told me he gave the origianl customer his money back and ended up eating it. Had it for sale for $200. Said a few people had looked at it but no one wanted to pay that for it since it was missing the dongle. SO... i did what any self respecting cheapo would do. I offered him $100 cash for it. NO GO. I then went and picked out what i came for ( a new PSU) and went to the register. The owner said, tell you what.. you give me $150 for the keyboard, and its yours. So i bought it thinking by the time i bought the logitech edge, it would be about that much with shipping and this way, i got an extra mouse.
So i came home, used the original Bluetooth dongle that came with my Wallyworld special and K A P O W it works. Batteries were still in it, and the thing was charged so i guess the other owner had at least charged it. HOLY HELL is this thing sharp. Works fine, and i freakin love it. I honestly wouldn't pay $300 or even $200 for it and i feel abit embarresed i paid $150 for it, but it is VERY nice. My wife even said it feels VERY expensive... and that it does. The backlighting is very nice.. and the touchpad mouse in the top right hand corner works really well also. I'm very pleased... just dealing with my inner nature to be a cheap bastoid. lol. Here's a pic or two if your interested. :)

PROS:
AWESOME STYLING -hands down the slickest peripharl i've ever owned
GREAT features.. backlighting is awesome
Touchpad mouse WORKS.. which is more than i can say for a few other HTPC solutions i tried before i ended up with my M$ wally world special i eluded too ealier.
RECHARGABLE base is nice other than it has to be close to the PC..see cons
LOCKABLE bluetooth.. WOW, this feature is my favorite.. so if you accidentally hit the button it wiill not disconnect or vice versa.. very nice!
CONS
The keyboard is slightly off center and its gonna take some getting used to.
Has to be docked near your HTPC if thats what you use it for.
Cost.. no way i'd pay more than $150 for it, but it does feel like its hella expensive.
HOPING the battery life is good.. i'll keep you all posted. :)

kamadzu4 12-18-07, 12:20 AM For those with the X-gene keyboard mouse combo (aka the Adesso as linked a few posts up, etc.) - a couple questions:
1. Is the optical trackball smooth? (My current Vidabox feels awful - very gritty and noisy).
2. Do you ever get dropped letters? (Huge "yes" for the Vidabox, especially with combos - i.e. shift + letter or control + letter).
3. On the 1920 x 1080 screen, how far does the cursor travel with one 180 degree swipe of the trackball? (With the Vidabox, it's about 13 slow swipes to get across, or 2-3 if you spin the trackball as fast as you can so that acceleration kicks in. This is with the mouse speed set to max...)
4. The X-gene's are PS2, right?

ok hold up a second. you might be on something, then again, might not. here is my setup.
in the office i have my external HD. in the living room, my 360, router, modem and plasma. once i plug in my HD to the laptop, i stream the movies through media center on my 360. i have media center extender and use zune to share files, along with media center on laptop.
now, tell me what your talking about doing. streaming from thr 360 dashboard? like, connect the external HD to the usb port on the back of the 360? but then, when i download a movie or whatever, i can choose that has a source, it wont be viewable from my laptop. or will it? i am a tad bit confused. but please, help me out here.
ultimatly i would like to have my laptop anywhere and access the external HD wirelessly. doubt it is possible without a NAS though.

I'm glad to see you like the keyboard. Is it taking you much to get used to the keys being slightly off centered? The B and N keys on it look HUGE lol!
I try to keep price checking the dinovo edge and the MS 7000 bluetooth as they are the ones that I am interested in. I am hoping to catch one on a "can't miss deal", like when the edge was clearanced at best buy for $40. I am in no rush as I have an adesso 4000 curently:
http://www.adesso.com/products_detail.asp?productid=281
It serves its purpose Ok, but I would really like to upgrade to bluetooth. It seems that I get dead spots with this RF keyboard and I am hoping bluetooth gives me a little more reliability at my range without the need to use usb extenders to move the reciever closer.
Keep us posted as to your results with your new keyboard!

tha5150 12-18-07, 10:47 AM whoa killa. thats a bit too much money. if you got it, go for it. i was looking in the 60 dollar range.
lol. why would you want your lady to use the mouse anyway. Its like letting her drive. you never know what will end up happening
Although she rarely uses it, she is the final athority on what is allowed in the livingroom.
Currently using the trusty old airboard, but she wants the IR receiver dongle gone. So the DiNovo Edge is on the Christmas list.

DiNono Edge is much bigger and more awkward than your airboard. Not really meant to hold with just one hand. Have you tried the other one everyones talking about in this thread? I honestly think its the "next Airboard". The x-gene keyboard.. that is.

PWNKAKE 12-18-07, 01:40 PM I'm glad to see you like the keyboard.
After using it last night, i can say that i honestly do love it. I guess being a cheap person, i like/LOVE the feel of something expensive that i didn't pay full price for.
I'd say the 7000 is the sweetspot, unless you need the backlit keys which WORK FLAWLESSLY. I figured it would be halfassed, but its not, its full on lit. It turns off when you take your hands away, and back on when you move your hands close. It has short throw keys which is also really nice. I didn't mention that above. This keyboard is WAY more responsive than my old bluetooth keyboard found here: Microsoft Desktop Elite Bluetooth.
It was a great keyboard (the old one) i got it on sale at Wallyworld, but it did loose connection often.
Anyway, i love the 8000 and highly recommend it if your willing to shell out the cash!

How is it much bigger than the airboard? From the dimensions on the Logitech website, it measures pretty close to the airboad overall.
As for one handed operation, that really isn’t an issue for me. About the only time I use a keyboard is when I rip a DVD to the hard drive. Or convert DVDs for my Archos. Otherwise I use the remote exclusively. Resting it on my lap is plenty fine. Further, I would rather have a touch pad than a joystick or trackball.

PWNKAKE, your link does not work.
Just picked up the Logitech Mediaboard. Yeah the buttons feel cheap, but I really like how light it is. And it actually holds a connection unlike my old Logi S510. For some reason though the pointer sensitivity always resests to default when restarting the computer. Thats very frustrating because I need higher sensitivity on my 1920x1080 desktop.
PWNKAKE 12-18-07, 05:18 PM PWNKAKE, your link does not work.
Yeah.. sorry Amazon is Link blocking for some reason?? Oh well.. its the Microsoft Desktop Elite Bluetooth.. (Blue Keyboard and mouse) at Amazon for $56.
tylertran 12-24-07, 07:28 AM Thanks to the helpful posts on this forum, I've narrowed my choices to the following:
Logitech DiNovo Edge:
logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard/devices/192&cl=us,en
Logitech Cordless Mediaboard Pro:
logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard/devices/3616&cl=us,en
From what I can gather, it seems like the biggest complaint against the Edge is the round touchpad vs. the more common square touchpad. While the Mediaboard is obviously not as elegant as the Edge, it does have a standard size/shape touchpad and at about half of the cost. My biggest drawback to the Mediaboard is that it is not rechargeable, however; $80 in batteries could probably get me pretty far.
Does anybody have any experience using the Mediaboard for their HTPC and have any convincing arguments why I should NOT buy it. (In my mind I really want the edge, just having a hard time rationalizing the price with a seemingly decent alternative.)
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
Edit:
Again, while significantly less attractive than the DiNovo Edge and Mediaboard Pro, this option (1st Edition Mediaboard) is significantly less expensive. Based on 2.4GHz wireless technology (as opposed to Bluetooth)this has been reported to work with the Xbox360 as well, a major plus for me.

tha5150 12-24-07, 09:47 AM i just opened an early present and it was the logitech wireless wave (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/keyboards/keyboard_mice_combos/devices/3072&cl=us,en) with mouse combo. cool looking keyboard, unforunatly it doesnt have a built in mouse, nor is it RF which i need. going to take it back, and use the money to get this adesso (http://www.adesso.com/products_detail.asp?productid=281) unless i can find one with backlit key's that i like and isnt 200 bucks. i want to spend no more than 100
denyart 12-24-07, 12:54 PM Well, its not much, but the mediaboard doesn't have Windows keys (at least the one I had didn't). It also is much flimsier. Where the Windows keys would be it has another set of mouse buttons. I had it for a while, but now I have the Edge. Good luck with your decision.
tylertran 12-24-07, 01:19 PM Ames eh? I hope you're not one of them Cyclone fans. :)
Being that you've owned both a Mediaboard and the Edge, do you feel that the Edge lived up to its price difference?
Love,

plasmamaniac 12-26-07, 02:58 PM I just bought the Gyration Go Pro RF Keyboard & Mouse (which is gyro controlled, very cool). This is a little PRICEY for most people but I just love it when I am in my Home Entertainment Room using my 52" LCD Display as a PC Monitor. Keyboard is the smaller version as I don't need a numerical keypad, very light and the keys are very well built. Programmable hotkeys on the mouse which is also laser driven when not activated for Gyro Control as in sitting on a desk or some other flat surface. VERY COOL!!!
Check it out if money is no object at gyration.com.

Might be worth checking out...
I'm still using a wired combo that I bought a bunch of years ago, when they were being sold for $5.00, otherwise I might give this one a try myself.
I've been trying to find a trackball mouse wireless keyboard with the both mouse buttons on the same side as the trackball. Does this keyboard have that (but jut not visible in the picture)?

Just contact the seller. He may have some more photos or a manual.
ellisr63 01-23-08, 11:19 AM Funny this thread is bumped cause i looked through it last night and looked at the DiNovia and the M$ 7000 AGAIN.. lol (been looking at them both since summer).
www.chattanoogagaming.com/kb1.jpg No Backlight
www.chattanoogagaming.com/kb2.jpg Backlight
Here's my impressions briefly...
So you don't have to use the seperate mouse... correct? When I look at the pics I don't see a touchpad... what are you using as a mouse?

Ron

I would have gotten that, if I hadn't asked for, and received the edge for Christmas. The edges works without hassle, but it doesn't sit very well on the arm of the couch. I would easily trade a full size keys for the smaller form factor. Although the flip open lid would have to go.

Newegg lists it as a new arrival. The Adesso/X-Gene was great for me when it worked but it was soooooo fragile so I'm looking for a replacement.
gtfoltz 03-27-08, 11:50 AM I have a BTC wireless keyboard with an integrated joystick mouse. Works, but not for regular use. The small trackball on this unit does not look very promising to me either. I can't imagine using it for any length of time.
Of course, I'm spoiled by my diNovo Edge... :D

dmxsoulja3 05-05-08, 10:04 AM So yes this is an old thread but I was hoping someone could talk about using the 2.4ghz technology near routers, does it have any impact on Wireless internet? Think I want to go with the Adesso but I can't seem to find anywhere that mentions the exact frequency it works on so I could make sure my router channel is far away as possible.
denyart 05-05-08, 01:37 PM Don't know about the adesso, but the bluetooth ones seem to have no effect. I believe bluetooth is in the 2.4 GHz band, but it autonegotiates an open channel. Also the channels that these devices use are smaller, so they can easily "fit in" as long as there is some opening. I can vouch for the dinovo KBs working without a noticeable interruption of 802.11 access.

I have not had any issues with my Adesso and my wifi network. I still think that it is a great choice for a HTPC keyboard. I even returned the Dinovo Edge I bought to replace it. Only issues I have are those that have probably already been addressed; the fact that the touchpad will not wake the keyboard (you have to press a key several times) and that the touchpad could be more sensitive.
NotSoCoolJ 05-06-08, 11:06 AM Uggh. I have an RF set my self. It doesn't work unless I'm three feet from the computer. Total waste. I have used a few of the logitec RF sets and those seem to be much more powerful. There is no reason to think that RF will best a good IR system in a home. There is much more RF pollution in our homes than we think. Cordless phones, cell phones, you name it. RF has the potential to do better, but in practice its just not the case.

SMac770 05-06-08, 11:30 PM The X-Gene is outstanding. I can't stand touchpad products. I would have been happy with a joystick (like on laptops), but the trackball is great. And it's got a scroll wheel and left mouse button on both sides of the keyboard. The in-hand feel is very nice. Good size. Not really any good for FPS gaming, but if I was doing gaming, I'd get a real keyboard/mouse setup mounted. This is perfect for HTPC. No problems with my wireless network; the HTPC and SB3 and XBox360 are all wireless-G connected. And it's a simple USB connection. I can just pull the dongle and plug it into any PC, such as my music server, and have an instant keyboard connection. No drivers required.
SilverBlade 05-06-08, 11:35 PM To me, a keyboard and mouse do NOT belong in the living room. That is what I am aiming for in my HTPC that I will build sometime in the future. I don't even want a keyboard and mouse to be *present* in the living room.
SMac770 05-06-08, 11:52 PM To me, SilverBlade does NOT belong in this thread. That is what I am aiming for in my dream life that I will live sometime in the future. I don't even want useless people to be *present* in the new world.
Davidt1 05-09-08, 01:47 PM Glad I found this thread. I have been looking for an reliable and inexpensive RF keyboard with built-in mouse/trackball. The Adesso WKB-3000UB looks like decent one. Is this a good keyboard? Are there better choices for same price? Thanks.

I think you are unnecessarily limiting yourself to what an HTPC can really be. Yeah, being able to use a remote for the "home theater" aspects (like playing movies, listening to music, etc) is fine, but what about surfing the web, playing a game, or any other "PC" task? I hardly use my "real" PC anymore, cause I can lounge on my couch and surf instead! I guess all I am saying is don't knock it til you've tried it... ;) There's no reason an HTPC can't be a home theater component sometimes, a PC sometimes, and BOTH the rest of the time... :D
whitenack 05-22-08, 08:16 AM Add me to the list of someone looking for a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse for my new HDTV. The reason I want a full mouse is so I can play games.
I need something that has a range of 15-20 feet.
ashitaka 05-22-08, 01:18 PM Is anyone using the Playstation 3 Logitech Cordless Mediaboard Pro for their HTPC? i am considering it... it's a lot cheaper than the dinovo edge....
av.pallino 05-22-08, 05:50 PM I am happy with my Adesso that I picked up on Amazon for $85. Works like a laptop key board and has good range. I am using a Vaio SZ series laptop as my dockable HTPC.
It takes a sec or 2 to reactivate. But the ergonomics are good and it does the job well.
I also have just a Sony BT mouse when I don't need to use the keyboard (only want to launch apps).
Is the XGene keyboard still the best mouse+keyboard combo for people that need to use the mouse and keyboard both at the same time very quickly? My problem has been none of the keyboard mouse combo keyboards were designed well enough for power users that do things very quickly with complex mouse/keyboard combinations.
Edit: I like the below one, but no useable full time mouse:
http://www.chattanoogagaming.com/kb2.jpg
I wonder if this one is better for doing things quickly in Windows

Small review:

Another review:
http://www.networkingaudiovideo.com/archives/2008/03/brando_wireless_keyboard_with.php
I just ordered my second x-gene keyboard. It seems like this keyboard/mouse combo just cant be beat; hence it's very popular design adopted by multiple OEMs. I Even saw some exotic versions of this keyboard in silver and with a red trackball in UK.
Looking at everything and keeping cost in mind, I had finally narrowed things down to this one from Vidabox (http://www.vidabox.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=3&products_id=83) and this generic from X-gene (http://www.x-gene.biz/products/wirelesskb/wirelesskb.html - the one on the bottom).
How did those $40 deals work?
saintsaints 06-11-08, 04:22 AM Can you take the cover off the mini dinovo, if it's flipped open will block the screen when using it on my pc.
denyart 06-11-08, 03:26 PM Not likely, the cover opening and closing controls a switch that puts the keyboard into and out of standby. I have one and looked at it a little, and it doesn't look like it could be removed.
tbessie 06-11-08, 05:09 PM Is anyone using the Playstation 3 Logitech Cordless Mediaboard Pro for their HTPC? i am considering it... it's a lot cheaper than the dinovo edge....
I'm using it - it works pretty well, no complaints really. Typing with it on my lap makes it bounce around a bit, and the touchpad on the side is slightly annoying to use because it's not right under my fingers (if I could, I'd have something like the IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad keyboard, but a Bluetooth version, with the little control nub in the middle and mouse buttons beneath, but there isn't such a beast yet, I don't think).
I wish it had a Windows key - I can a key or key combo to do it, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

greglansing 06-17-08, 02:08 PM So yes this is an old thread but I was hoping someone could talk about using the 2.4ghz technology near routers, does it have any impact on Wireless internet? Think I want to go with the Adesso but I can't seem to find anywhere that mentions the exact frequency it works on so I could make sure my router channel is far away as possible.
I'm with you on this concern.
I have a wi-fi network in my home for a couple of computers using a Linksys wireless router.
The 2.4ghz frequency and wireless network has made me hold-off on buying a wireless keyboard. One person told me, they had an adesso keyboard and that it was absolutely terrible in his home with his wifi network active.
However I still need a keyboard. I need it to work from atleast 10 feet away from our couch area. The PC connected to my HDTV is connected to internet VIA my wi-fi network. Hence this other persons review has concerned me.
I hate to buy something and then have to return it if I bought it online, but I am willing to take the chance if enough people can counter his review with a positive one. Maybe its just his home, or environment?
I have looked at the following keyboards:
Adesso 2.4 GHz RF Wireless Mini Keyboard w/Optical Trackball
Adesso SlimTouch Wireless 2.4 GHz RF Mini Touchpad Keyboard
BTC 9019URF Wireless Keyboard
But quiet honestly I would be fine with a *working* keyboard/mouse combo that was in the $30$40 range being this is my first attempt at an HTPC.
Comments, suggestions, recommendations FOR MY environement?
zhenya00 06-17-08, 02:16 PM I can't say I've had any issues with my Adesso wireless keyboard and my wireless network.
vsrt1012 06-19-08, 03:00 PM Me neither. I use the Adesso 2.4 GHz RF Wireless Mini Keyboard w/Optical Trackball and have no issues what so ever. Good range etc and I am getting used to the trackball. I really liked my Belkin media pilot keyboard but I broke it and they no longer make them. But this new one is working just fine.

For iphone, there's an application called: "Touchpad Pro"...you can use it as a mouse pad for your pc. I did use it, it was fun...google is your friend (how to install)....
Or if you have PS3 BT remote control, you can turn it into a Media Center RC...and "ngRC - next generation Remote Control" is another solution for iphone, PSP to control you media center PC....head over "thegreenbutton" for more info.
Have Fun.

FrothyDog 11-10-08, 09:23 PM I just picked up the Logitech diNovo Edge and I love it. It has a built-in touch pad and can be docked on a recharging base. It's replacing my Gyration mouse and keyboard. My gripe with the Gyration is that it was extremely prone to RF interference in my living room. Sometimes I would mash the keyboard keys for a full 10 seconds before it started to pick up keystrokes.

av.pallino 03-05-09, 07:59 AM I really like the Dinovo Mini because of the backlighting. However, my Sony HTPC came with a notebook style wireless keyboard that is also excellent for regular use since the key board is full size. I use both now. The Sony quality is fantastic but it's also super expensive to buy (over $200) if you don't buy the HTPC.
You can use both at the same time with a Sony HTPC.
pixelation 03-05-09, 01:28 PM Is there a way to turn iPhone or other BT PDA Phones into BT keyboards?
Answering my own question:

jstnhickey 03-05-09, 02:42 PM I've been using the BTC 9019 for about a month and have been having huge problems getting a signal. I'm about 5.5 or 6 feet back from the transmitter. I read through part of this thread and people have stated that they have had better luck at a greater distance and with the transmitter higher up.
I am usually sitting or laying down so this would be great. What distances have worked best for some people. Has putting it up higher worked better overall for you guys.
It gets very frustrating trying to put in passwords in the linux terminal and not being able to tell if the keystrokes worked.
Any tips are greatly appreciated.
Mookeylama 03-05-09, 03:20 PM i've looked at that BTC 9019, and i like the look but can it work at about 25-30' away?
jstnhickey 03-05-09, 06:25 PM no luck putting the receiver far away...
Guess I'll keep trying various close spots in the living room
dmxsoulja3 03-06-09, 09:40 AM as an update...I have been using the PS3 logitech keyboard with trackpad for months now happily.
I don't know if you are dead set on having an integrated joystick mouse....but this is what I use;

It's pricey but I really like it. The mouse doesn't have to be on a flat surface. You hold it in the air kind of like a Wii remote.
Plus, it's RF range is 100ft. Line of sight is not mandatory.
I have seen it used in a large auditorium from 50+ ft away (with lots of people with wireless devices like PDA's, cell phones and laptops with WIFI).
Or you can go for the full sized keyboard with hot keys;

The only thing I don't like about this is that the mouse has to be charged. I would have prefered to be able to change out batteries for it instead.
BTW, you can find these cheaper online. Just do a search for the model numbers on Google;
GP6105CKM - small keyboard
GP6205FKM - full keyboard
