View Full Version : Can anyone recommend a wireless keyboard with built in mouse for htpc?
I tried looking at Best Buy and Circuit city but they dont carry keyboards with integrated mice.
Can anyone tell me some names I can lookup? I dont want to spend too much though.
Thanks

I don't have one but a lot of people speak highly of the LiteOn Airboard Wireless Keyboard/Joystick Mouse. They are available at DigitalConnections for $29 + S/H

I'd be weary of the IR connection. Not pointing just the right direction and no-worky. Unlike a remote, I don't want to have to point my keyboard. I'd suggest an RF solution.
Personally, I'm using the Logitech MX KB/Mouse I had before (not integrated.) Works great and would only change for the new laser version.
I would get a keyboard with a trackball a whole lot easier to use than a mouse type one. Well atleast thats what im looking at. :)

I've had an airboard since 99 (paid NINETY bucks for it) and I've tried the gyro wireless stuff and dell's wireless setup and the IR airboard actually works much better from a lazy boy/couch - the dell (logitech made, i think) had no range, and the gyro mouse kept getting lost in the couch. if you position the receiver correctly, the airboard works well even at 20+ feet.
not to mention i don't remember ever changing the batteries....
the key to it is to learn all the keyboard shortcuts for everything you can. the mouse nub thing works well, but it's all much easier to do with the keyboard. having the mouse there as a backup to the keyboard without having to find it is excellent. i've never used a trackball much, but the times i have i found it very poor as a mouse (worse than a nub by far.
the airboard also has a left click lock/unlock button on the front so dragging and dropping can be done one handed.

The problem I've had with RF keyboards is range. My couch sits to far back to make my Logitech happy. I'm thinking about switching to the much cheaper IR option.
The best option for the money is definately the lite-on keyboard/mouse from newegg. It's $23 and works well, the range is really good and the IR isn't as bad as you would think, works from a good variety of angles. I use it daily and I couldn't be happier with it :D

RF has better range than IR. With that said I don't see how switching to a IR solution will help you. ???

most of the RF solutions are pretty weak. the microsoft one is horrible (personal exp.) the logitech one is suppose to be better, my gyration is good to 15ft (farthest i tested). so RF should have a better range then IR, but not always...

The Interlink VersaPoint RF wireless keyboard is a good choice, though a little pricey. Has a range of about 100 feet. I have it stuck in my equipment room and can be anywhere in my theater and it works great. Has a pretty full keyboard and integrated mouse pointer control (a thumbpad with mouse buttons strategically located around the case). The keyboard is designed to sit on you lap (i.e. has a slight double dip to accomodate legs) and is pretty light.
Thank you guys. I think I will try the Liton keyboard.

I saw this and I thought Eureka!!! About two years after getting my discontinued BTC5090 I can get what looks like an identical keyboard which I can then use for my Theater room leaving the older keyboard in the family room.
I search the web and find glowing reviews (the handles by the way are a great touch for a keyboard like this used for a home theater coach/lap situation.Very convenient for picking up and passing to other/setting down etc.
Problem is there still appears to be no place you can actually buy one in the US either.
But since the reviews were dated in the last couple days I imagine its just a shipping delay and they will be available shortly.
Iintend to get one - from the reviews it has an even better range than my 5090 (one reviewer mentioned going outside the house with it still working)

I have both the Lite-On from NewEgg and the Lite-On from DigitalConnection. I prefer the DC one because of the placement of the mouse buttons directly under the stick.

Do they both share the same IR code? Because I would really like to have both of them because I have two HTPC's near each other and currently use another wireless KB on my other one (other then the Airboard like DC's)?
Thanks
I don't know. I had one downstairs and the other upstairs and had no problems, but I wouldn't have expected them to overlap either. I like the DC one so much that the next order I placed with DC I ordered another one from them and sold the keyboard I bought from NewEgg to a friend.

K1114,
What's the max range for this keyboard/mouse? I've planned to put my PC (system unit) on a shelf in the entertainment center that has a dark smoked color glass. Do you think this keyboard still work with that setup ? If so, where can I buy this keyboard? Thanks.

Please disregard the questions I have in my previous reply. I have found the answers at newegg.com. Thanks any way.

Could you verify that they do not work on each other's receiver please? I hate my 2nd KB and would really like to replace it with another one.
thanks
I have Liteont Airboard from DC - i tried using Logitech Cordless combo for HTPC (using it on main home PC) and found its not suitable, since its too big to use.
Small factor keyboard with buildin mouse (that works great) is well enought to configure HTPC when i need it - all other time HTPC is controlled via remote only.
Sorry, I don't currently have the NewEgg Lite-On keyboard. I eventually replaced it with a second Lite-On keyboard from Digital Connection because I didn't like the mouse button placement on the NewEgg version...

i did scan quickly through the post, so i may have glanced over this point: i noticed that no one has mentioned bluetooth. range has been a troublesome issue for standard rf keyboards in my ht, and the bluetooth adapted keyboard, so far, seems to be the solution. i would assume stronger rf signal. i am not sure on the details. are there any negative experiences with bluetooth-adapted keyboards?

About the Newegg/DC compatibility: I was told by Steve at DC that the newer receiver works with the old keyboard, but the hotkeys at the top won't work.

I have logitech rf and logitech bluetooth. The rf really didn't have the range I needed, the bluetooth has plenty.
Downside on the bluetooth is that the mouse needs to be charged more often.
of course, neither of these have integrated mouse.

Its - i learned many key combos from Liteon to my MX-700 remote.
I've been using the liteon for over a year, and haven't changed the batteries once yet. I haven't had any line of sight problems due to IR, and I can program the keyboard into my pronto.

My BTC 9019 has shipped but I should caution others that the range specs are different than I thought. Lists at 3 meters (9.8 feet) on the BTC site. My 5090 listed at 16 feet.
Even if it is only good for 10 feet or so I will be able to use it in a location other than my theater room but others may want to wait on a report back.
I was relying on a couple of reviews of this KB on the web noting it could go 28 feet or so and another that mentioned 17 feet and outside the room.

I've also placed an order with them today since i couldn't wait. According to UPS tracking# it will be here tomorrow since i live in San Francisco. I will report back about the effective distance on this RF board.
Shi* , I was thinking 28 feet as well. I hope it is longer than 10 feet or it will be useless for me. My RF remotes work all over the house, I dont understand why the keyboard/mouse manufacturers have so many problems with distance.
Just to add something.
If you want range, I have one word.
Bluetooth
I have logitechs and it's wonderfull.
Ok guys, i got the BTC 9019URF keyboard today and everything works fine.
The first thing i noticed is the range is more than 10 feet. I've tried
20 - 23feet around my living room and kitchen since my apartment is not huge. But is still responding well. Comes with 2 x AA Duracell battery too.

On the BTC 9019URF distance looks good based on kickzz's report so hoping I get the same.
I have long wondered what was up with range of rf keyboards - dismal for room use generally at 2 meter range - but then way long time ago I had (still have it actually) an Intel wireless set that worked great at 3 rooms away distances. And then my discontinued BTC worked great. They were both 900 MHz keyboards leading me to believe they were in violation of some FTC requirements on interference or why else would they discontinue such products and in the case of BTC years ago come out with lower range models (I think I had a (?) 5113 URF that would only go 7 feet or so- threw it out).

Any of these good for gaming? I need an RF/Blue tooth since I do not have line of sight to my HTPC. Would like to play Doom3 on the 106" screen.
What's the price on these BTC 9019's? This may be exactly what I'm looking for. My computer sits about 6 - 8 ft behind me in my home theater.
So I'm thinking range is ok.
How much did you pay for the keyboard?
Thanks,

For anyone interested in the Liteon SK7551, I just got mine from www.chiefvalue.com for $19.99 delivered. I was worried it might be flimsy like other mini-keyboards I've tried, but this feels like a quality keyboard. Nice weight, very good build quality. The keyboard works flawlessly, but the integrated joystick is a little bit flakey. It seems to have a little trouble emitting a constant signal but it's usable. I wonder if this is normal. Anybody else have this problem?

FYI, I also have the Lite-On (can't resist for $17 bucks!) and it works great at 20+ ft.
It even has a "power off" key that instantly shuts WinXP Pro down, with no 2nd chance prompts, etc.. Nice feature, and the button is small and placed out of the way at the top. However ---
I was using my universal remote on my Sony receiver, and the HTPC shut down as if I'd pushed that button. I'll get around to doing some quantitative tests at some point, but it seems that there is an overlap in the IR codes which you may want to look out for.
And, no I did not load any of software to get the keyboard working. WinXP just recognized it immediately, it does plug into the PS2 ports BTW. Otherwise, I love the keyboard/mouse - small, black, and inexpensive.

This is a good point! However, you have to keep in mild that we are using so many wireless products today, that to think that there will not be interference would be a mistake. Case in point: my initial purchase was std RF and in one room I had a range of 14 ft; however when I set it up in my HT the range went down to 2(two) feet! This is likely why we have so many varied opinions on the product range.
I'm currently trying a microsoft product with blue tooth and though I will not use all of the range it does work in my HT up to 25-30 feet. Set up was easy. My system searches for the BT products on start-up which takes a few extra seconds. The transceiver is smaller than my thumb and will allow 6 other proucts to be connected via BT. As I adapt is into my system I'll post if there are any problems.

I purchased the LiteOn Sk7551 and was pretty pleased with it (range, comfort/feel, ease of use) until I ran into problems after a couple of days or so. Seems it may have been interfering with my StreamZap and Harmony remotes (wouldn't work after a while and would have to reboot pc). It would also launch programs on its own (Outlook Express & Windows Media Player) while watching tv. Tried disabling the Hotkey functions, but no luck.
FWIW, I'm running WinXP Pro Sp1 and use SageTV with the StreamZap. No problems since removing the LiteOn. It's a shame because I was hoping to learn keystrokes to my Harmony 659. So, now I'm going to be looking into Bluetooth or RF.
However, you almost can't beat the price of the LiteOn Sk7551. If you're not running other IR remotes connected to your PC, it might be worth looking into.

SK-7551 owners,
Does the little joystick work with no problems for you? I'm getting intermittent signal output and I am wondering if this is common or do I have a defective unit? It's usable, just not perfect. If it's common, then I won't go thru the hassle of getting it exchanged. Anybody?

I'm getting intermittent signal output and I am wondering if this is common or do I have a defective unit? Move your big feet out of the way of the transmitter/receiver region! :D
Seriously, I had the same problem (bouncing all over the place at times) for the first couple of hours until I realized that I had my feet (on the coffee table) between the receiver and transmitter. As long as I maintain and "UNOBSTRUCTED" field of view between the keyboard and the receiver - All is well.
The stupidest part was when I first connected it and tried to log-on to XP-Pro... I could see it was typing but it would not accept my password. After ranting for about 1/2 hr. I realized that I have the NUMLOCK turned on in the BOIS at boot and the numbers on this keyboard overlay the letters when this function is turned on. <sigh>

Well, I definitely have a clear field of view. I've tested with the keyboard 2ft away. When I move the joystick in one direction, the receiver LED lights up indicating it's receiving data, then BAM! the cursor freezes and the LED goes dark telling me that it's no longer receiving data. If I hold down the shift key (forcing the keyboard to continuously send data) and move the joystick simultaneously, the cursor moves around with no freezing. I would hate to exchange it for another one and have it behave the same way.
Datalux
10-07-04, 06:18 PM
Well, I hate to say it but that definitely sounds like a problem with the mouse function. I can't imagine this being a design feature. When I move the mouse in any given direction, the mouse moves smoothly around the screen without freezing. There is no pause even when quickly changing directions. I can do this continuously for moments at a time with no problem.

Guys,
I am very interested in the Liteon keyboard. Just a couple of questions:
I know it has been said that there is a power off button--is that both a power on AND off button?
Also, how long is the PS2 cord that connect the computer and the IR receiver? I need it to reach a little distance. If to short, is there such a thing as a PS2 connector extension?
Thanks.

Got mine today and I am quite pleased. All features appear to be working fine including multimedia buttons. Works anywhere in my theater room but not in the room next door - lost some keystrokes there.
I think you woud be safe within the rated 10 ft range but perhaps could lose keystrokes beyond that. (It does not match the range of my BTC5090 nor my Intel wireless, but works in my room considering range needed)
Pasco at OGeek emailed me to let me know it was being delivered. I never received that type of personal service for a $35 keyboard before:
Hi Ralph,
UPS is out to deliver your keyboard. I hope you like it.
Thanks
pasco
I received my btc 9019 Friday and had a chance to test it out this weekend. At first I was a disappointed, because at about 10 feet away, I had to point the bottom of it toward the receiver to get it to work properly. But then yesterday I mounted the receiver on top of my entertainment center (about 7' feet high) and I can sit at almost any position and get good reception. This is important because I like to lay at the end of my couch and rest the keyboard on my legs as I browse the internet on my projector. The joystick takes a little getting used to but it is consistent. I adjusted the "mouse" speed and could use it pretty well after about an hour. I recommend this keyboard for someone who doesnt have line of sight to the receiver and is less than 15 feet away. Anything over that didnt work well for me.
P.S. Pasco at Ogeek.com gave me the best service I have ever had for something less that $50, especially when you consider he is probably only making $10 or so. He emailed me 3 times before he shipped it to confirm everything, and email me yesterday to see how I liked it! I will use him again in the future.

Pasco was at the McDonald's as he said he would be. Boy...what service. It saved me the $6.XX on shipping and I didn't have to wait to try it out.
The BTC 9019RF does indeed work much better than the BTC 5113RF that I had been using the past year or so. It even included 2 AA Duracell batteries. The keyboard layout is similar, and the joystick mouse is slightly easier to use than the button mouse. I've got the receiver stuck hidden away, yet didn't have any problems with the keyboard.
I have always loved the handles and to have the left/right buttons next to my left hand and the mouse on my right hand.
I can't comment on the keys because I never really use them much on my HTPC.
I almost went with the Liteon except I really like the handles for grabbing and holding the keyboard without touching any other keys by accident.
I recieved the LITE-ON SK7551 from newegg a couple of days ago. I am very happy with it. I have not installed any of the drivers for it. The power botton works to turn off the computer but it does NOT turn it on. The range is very good and the joystick is nice.
I noticed newegg just raised the price $2 but still this keyboard is very nice.

The BTC does have a mouse that changes to a Joystick with a separate button.
I am not a gamer but you can look at this review (http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?id=1242&cid=12&pg=3) for some comments on the quality of the joystick mode.
In short it appears to not be equivalent to a separate dedicated joystick/gamng device but do you really expect that on a keyboard?

Yes, RF has its advantages, but because the Asus Mother board I'm using can be turned on with the keyboard. I was able to teach my Sony IR remote to turn my HTPC on and off, and control MyHD. Why do you have to teach your Sony IR remote to turn your HTPC on and off? Why can't you press the IR remote keyboard spacebar to turn the PC on?

I've been using the Interlink VersaPoint RF keyboard for the past year or so. My HTPC is 25 feet from my normal viewing position. I tried IR units, but they could not go the distance, and were line of sight. I can use the RF keyboard anywhere in my viewing room, including on a deck separated from the viewing room by sliding glass doors. I'm very happy with the unit. A thumbpad joystick is on the right side of the keyboard, while the mouse buttons are on the left. Both the joystick and mouse buttons are right where they should be ergonomically. The keypad is well-balanced, easy to use, and has a high WAF.

I like my Interlink VersaPoint RF keyboard (and I didn't like the Lite-On Airboard) because of the reliability (and unreliability) of key/mouse input. However, using the VersaPoint's mouse puts a huge load on my CPU. In fact, it would often deadlock (i.e., crash) my old 2.2 Ghz P4 (probably IRQ conflict), and on my current 3.5 Ghz P4 (with new motherboard), the mouse sometimes stops dead in its tracks for a few seconds. The mouse is also painfully slow, even at the fastest setting in the control panel. I am running XP with no special driver for the VersaPoint. USB keyboard and mouse are turned on in my BIOS. The VersaPoint's mouse is usable, but I had to buy a Logitech Optical Wireless TrackMan trackball, for when I need to use the mouse a lot.
Is this typical of the Interlink VersaPoint RF keyboard?

I like the idea of an IR remote control keyboard mouse combo, but my HTPC is tucked off to the side in a cubby behind a curtain along with the receiver. I was considering trying one of those IR extenders (I think it converts the IR received and transmits it as an RF signal to another IR emitter than can presumably be placed within line of site of the equipment to be controlled. If so, this would mean that I could teach a few of the fuctions into the same universal IR remote that controls the receiver.
Is there a noticeable delay when typing under this configuration? ANy other issues to be aware of?
Thanks

I currently use this one: http://www.fentek-ind.com/rf-wireless-keyboard.htm#kbmrftb
It's very ergonomic and I love the trackball, but the range is only about 10-12ft at best (on a full battery charge). I'm looking for a replacement at the moment. Anybody know of a decent bluetooth or wireless usb model that has an integrated mouse controller? The Belkin Media Pilot looks promising but isn't available yet.
try this , BTC 9019 URF from ogeek.com
has an integrated joystick . i found this keyboard on this forum.
smooth transaction , great reseller and top service.
I've been using this one: http://www.pcconcepts.com/html/frmExpressPro.htm from PC Concepts since 1997 and I still love it. They even have new drivers for xp now, and it's great. It has a pointing device (joystick built into it with 2 buttons). Also has all the shortcut keys you can program. It is IR but works really good for an IR. You don't even have to point right at it to make it work. You can be like 90 degrees, or sometimes more off axis and it still works great. Batteries last for months (4 AA cells)

You have to turn on the "USB or PS2 power on" feature on your motherboard, which most of the time is a jumper on the motherboard.
I have the same kb and the power on and off works after I enabled the jumper.
How do you like it so far, I’ve had it about a month now and it misses about 20% of my key presses no matter how close I put it to the receiver.

On my motherboard, enabling the remote power-on is in the BIOS. I specify my keyboard as Win98 keyboard and it works great.
I've had my keyboard for a month also, but I'm not having the missed keypress problem. I'm probably about 7 or 8 ft away. My problem is with the joystick - it's a bit erratic. Most of the time it works great but sometimes it jumps all over the screen. If you're missing 20% of your keypresses, you should have sent it back for an exchange.

I am using the BTC 9019 URF with great results. It is a pain if you are left handed though. The joystick is upper right, and the mouse buttons are upper left. It also has scroll keys next to the joystick.
I used a gyration mouse and keyboard before this, and am much happier with the BTC.
Hello Neo+STi,
Did you get a chance to try out the Scorpius P20 yet? I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on performance.

I have the "auravision sn502-02" rf wireless keyboard. I love it because of the built tin trackball.
Unfortunalt the RF is patchy, I sit ~14 ft fromt eh receiver and on one side of the couch everythign is fine and on the other side it doesn't work, nearer to the receiver there is a big dead zone but further away (~20ft) the thing starts working again (!). So there are defiantly some constructive/destructive interference issues with my room geometry.
I am in the market for a wireless mouse for when I play FPS games on the TV, Bluetooth would be good for range and being able to communicate with my cell phone and bluetooth head set (for in game wireless speech).
I think I'll try a USB extension cable on the RF receiver today and find an optimum spot for it....

Hello Water,
I got the Scorpius P20 a couple days ago from Ogeek. I tested it out on open space without anything blocking , the range is 35ft and I went all the way to 40 ft and the mouse pointer is still moving smoothly. I think it will go all the way to 50ft. but at that kind of range, i can't even see my screen anymore. I'm very happy with the performance, This wireless keyboard came with a small USB receiver with extension USB cable for you to adjust the direction. I found the best reception is having the receiver point directly to you, and it is sitting on top on my htpc case.
Anyone tested it yet?

nahh...you don't need the combo, just the keyboard
their site is a little querky, you have to go to the drop down box to find just the keyboard
http://www.rfcombo.com/rfkeyboard.html
these things are a little pricely, but i've got to tell you, they are worth every penny (disclaimer: IF you're not gaming)
the reason i say it's not for gaming, is there is no num pad, function keys require a ctrl key and the mouse finger pad is not suited
what these are great for is htpcs for surfing net, video, mail, etc
you don't have to have a seperate mouse and it's very ergonomic feeling
well worth it and like someone above said, WAF is not a problem ;)
i'd put this right up their with a universal learning remote for sure and i'd never go back to infrared, bluetooth maybe, but never ir

I am considering the Interlink VersaPoint VP6210 or the Adesso SlimTouch WKB-4000US. I read in a previous post that the VP6210 mouse was painfully slow...can this be confirmed?
I am looking for the best RF Keyboard/Mouse Combo available. If someone knows a better one than these 2 let me know. No price limit.

Thanks for the information. I purchased two of these combo units for our training rooms at work.
I would also like to purchase one for home most likely without the mouse, however I would also like to be able to use it with Linux.
I am still trying to find more information on Versapoints compatibility with Linux. I have found some and it looks like with a little tweaking it can be done.

note - i would caution anyone from the 9019 URF as a viable HTPC kb if range is a factor. I sit <12ft from th receiver and it is abysmal. Could be wirelessnetwork or something.. .but no question the range on my unit sucks. I've tried every receiver placement s well... no thanks. (note you can thank the urf9019 for all the spelling and grmatical errors n this note... ie it misses key strokes etc..
Other issues I have..
big and clunky
deep throw keys are a paini
i like the mouse/joystick andthe scroll buttons..but thtas it. My old airboard is 10x better than this thing.
Note - customer support from BTCsucks as well. 5 emils later no response on my isues... srew them.. I'm getting the belkin or scorpius and paring it with a decent wireless mouse for gaming...

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. I agree with KYamnitz, mine (BTC 9019URF) is working great.
Actually, I have Scorpius P20 at my living room and have BTC 9019URF at my basement.
Hey WindsorTheater, I have same problem when I first got the BTC 9019URF from ogeek a couple month ago. But they told me that try to press the connect button on the receiver and the keyboard. Just let it reconnect again. After reconnect, it just works great.
Hope it can help! :D
anyone tried the Belkin MediaPilot? bit pricy but seems nice.
I've been using the Versapoint RF for a few years now; it's still the best wireless keyboard I've ever tried.
Pros:
Compact, light, and rugged: Mine has taken several beatings and spills, but still works like the day I got it.
Long range: The advertised 100ft range is not PR hyperbole. Walls/floors/furniture have little effect.
Long battery life: 4 AAs last 12-15 months with daily use.
Ergonomic design: The underside has contours for lap use, and the handgrip sides are designed for using the keyboard in mid-air.
No frills: No extraneous keys that you might have no use for.
Cons:
The D-pad style mouse is not particularly effective for heavy use: FPS games are not feasible, and heavy surfing is not practical without a "real" mouse.
Price: Expect to pay about $100 for one...TNSTAAFL.
Key layout: No numberpad, Most of the "wide" keys are skinnier than usual. Function Key row has undersized keys.
No frills: No extraneous keys that you might have a use for.
my Belkin MediaPilot arrived yesterday but was defective... they're shipping out another. Support said it is lifetime warrantied and on XP works with no drivers required FWIW.

Been using a BTC 9019URF for the last couple of weeks, I like it a lot. Mouse function is fine for basic usage, but probably not for games etc (as others have noted). I sit about 10 feet away, and range has not been a problem.

How's this ione so far from you few months of playing with it? The reviews look good but haven't seen much on this unit on the net.
I've no problem at all after a few months of usage
a simple long range wireless keyboard with a joystick mouse
if you are looking for a simple wireless keyboard with mouse function to be able to
surf on your big screen TV / LCD, you wont go wrong with this unit.
I personally like the mouse movement cause it will go slow at first
and if you "floor" it , it will just speed up. very nice feature if you are selecting
your programs from your start menu or any drop down menu.
well, i;ve also change the speed on the mouse control panel to the desire speed
that i prefer.
all in all, a nice piece of keyboard with built in mouse. well worth the price.

I've also got the 9019 URF, before I was using a Kensinton IR keybord and mouse combo. I like my 9019 URF way more. Range isn't a problem because I sit maybe about 10 to 12 feet away from the RF reciever. For some reason, I always had range issues with the Kensington. I don't think anyone's mentioned this, but I don't recall ever installing any of the drivers, just plugged it in and it worked. The 9019 URF keyboard layout different from what I'm used to, but other than that, the keyboard is great.
I'd like to followup on my use with the Belkin MediaPilot. it controls similar to the one pictured above (pointer on right, RMB/LMB on left), but has alot more options and extras Same small size factor & long-range. It has some dedicated multimedia buttons such as volume, FF/RW, etc and some programmable keys to launch apps. It also has a base that charges it. (and gives you a numeric keyboard which is useless for htpc).
The Belkin seems more designed for "multimedia presentations" which lends itself well to HTPC.The "mouse" part takes a while to get used to, and would be useless for gaming, etc. but is perfectly usable for HTPC navigation and even using XP itself. It would be nice if the mouse was a bit more responsive, as it is bit sluggish but that is probably expected vs a nice desktop mouse.
The Belkin also can issue RF commands (to control your AV equipment) but i have not gotten this to work with my onkyo amp (and i haven't really tried very hard) to control volume.
The one thing i'd like to have seen is a LIT keyboard which would be very useful (especially if you can setup the time or have a "light" button to allow dark operation - useful if you have young kids around - so hopefully that will come sooner than later.
How does this compare with btc 9019 urf, since you have both?
I like the ione scorpius p20 better (just my preference)
cause it is compact and light and i don't really use all the hotkeys on
the Btc 9019.
Features wise: BTC 9019 urf has it all
Range : Definately ione scorpius p20 , confirmed at 30ft and it is still performing well.

Purchased the last keyboard solution I'll ever need for my HTPC today...
Belkin MediaPilot (http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=100&pcount=&Product_Id=196807#)

I have been ontop of the 'HTPC' keyboard buzz for some years now looking at every suggestion, unknown mfg'rs, spontaneous 'ebay' buys, RF cobble jobs to airboards.. the list goes on - all in search of the most flexible, friendly, easy to use solution for my HTPC.
My requirements:
- integrated mouse with as many real 'mouse' functions as possible (ie scroll wheel, 3 buttons etc..)
- ROBUST and ACCURATE integrated mouse
- lightweight
- small and compact but still 'useful'
- short travel firm key throws
- RF with 30ft range
- wireless environment friendly (gets along with as many wireless gadgets as I can put in the same room - wlan, 900mhz phones, 2.4ghz phones, mice etc..)
- good for gaming when used with a conventional mouse - ie. WSAD keys in the right spots, CTRL, ALT and SHFT key sizes etc..
This product has done all of the above and MORE
- rechargeable docking station
- IR command sending AND learning and code list for AV components (yes its a universal remote too)
- RF 2.4ghz
- rubberized intellipoint mouse pad (firm, accurate AND adjustable via software)
- 3 button mouse support + scroll wheel that actually IS a scroll wheel
- lightweight, compact, thin and very sturdy (polar oppostite of the creaky URF9019)
- short firm key strokes (again opposite of the URF9019)
- visually attractive - not bright silver or equipped with roller coaster grab handles
I won't make this a huge review.. but I will say this keyboard was worth every penny of the 89.99 I paid for it. No more searching.. no more looking. It serves as the perfect 'all purpose' HTPC interface with good mouse support and form factor + serves as the perfect couch gamers board when combined with a real mouse.
My search is over. Now onto the wireless headphone / MIC solution.. and of course the wireless gaming solution that doesnt' need a keyboard at all -

The problem I've had with RF keyboards is range. My couch sits to far back to make my Logitech happy. I'm thinking about switching to the much cheaper IR option.
You should try the one I have...Versapoint RF wireless keyboard with builtin mouse $109 at frys and it has up to 100' range, I have a logitech MX3000 and i was having all kinds of problems going through a wall and only being 5' away. now i have walked down the hall about 30' and it works fine 9has 2 go through 4 walls at that distance.
This is the best RF wireless keyboard i have seen. They also have another one that is $300 but the only dif i saw was a presentation remote.

They had a versa point in the store where I bought the Belkin...
I chose the belkin because:
- same mouse pointer style and feel
- more mouse buttons - scroll wheel + 3rd button
- docking station w/ recharging
- less money
I'm sure its a good board though.. haven't tested mine to 100'... i wouldnt' be able to see the screen that far away anyways... :)
Windsor,
Nice find:
A few questions if I may:
• Is the “main board” detachable from the “base pad” and the number pad?
• How is connected to the PC? USB or PS/2, 1 or 2 connectors?
• Where is the receiver located on the PC side, i.e. is it separate or integrated in the docking station?
TIA!

- Yes, the charging base is made up of the num pad + base that the mainboard rests on. It sits on the base and makes contact via two gold contacts.
- USB one connector, no external AC power required, charges via USB power
- PC side receiver internal to the base

I can also vouch for the MediaPilot even though the first one I got was a lemon (just my luck). The integrated mouse stopped working after a few weeks of use but they sent me an advance replacement since it was under warranty and the new one has worked flawlessly for over 2 months now. Their CSRs were polite and professional to deal with.

I have a Logitech LX700 Wireless keyboard/mouse. Works pretty good I say, pretty cheap too!! Only complaint is you cant have wires crossing near the communication base or it wont work properly. At the risk of being beaten to a bloody pulp, I have the MCE keyboard, and love it!
Its great that it contains all of the remote control buttons on it, so my wife can have the remote, and I just hang on to the keyboard (fits great on the arm of my recliner)
Everyone has problems with the mouse, but I set the pointer speed just below the middle setting, and as long as you do short small bursts with it (not long movements) it works great!
Just my $.02

Just my $.02No beatings from this quarter. I too have the MCE keyboard and also love it. I'm using it at about nine feet from the IR receiver so have no reception problems. I got the thing even after reading reports about the terrible pointer device, and it did indeed suck -- at first. But one report I read was right; the pointer needs some breaking in and then works better. I also needed some stick time with it to become accustomed to its use. It's still not as good as a mouse, but no similar pointing device is, IMO.
Like you, I find myself using the keyboard rather than the remote, even for basic MCE controls. It's ergonomically well designed.

I love the Belkin Mediapoint. I know it has been recommended on here before because that is what prompted me to buy it. I had a Gyration mouse with keyboard before. This is an old thread, and the last post was 6 months ago, but I had such good impressions of this thing that I thought I'd put in a few words.
I visited microcenter's brick and mortar store and found the Belkin Mediapoint as a returned item for $55, down from its new store price of $85. I had misgivings, but after looking around, I bit, and after about an hour of use web browsing, so far so good. On the side, if I hadn't found this at refurb/return price, I would have either gone with the Adesso Slimtouch (more discussion below) just from the in-store impressions (read the discussion below, but I think I would have been disappointed if I had gone with the Adesso). Or, I would have just picked up a $25 Logitech or MS keyboard/mouse non-integrated combo.
Like most of the other Mediapoint posts here, what I really like about this kb is integrated cursor control, the almost(?) full-size keyboard layout (sorry, I've been using the great keyboard on my laptop, so I got used to it), and charging dock. The cheaper price boosts it for me too, and 30-day return + belkin lifetime limited warranty helps.
I do wish this thing had a good touchpad instead, as I got used to the notebook's and it's way faster to use, but the thumbstick isn't so bad. I just have to press down firmly to get it to respond, and I think from playing analog stick games so much I would have liked the thumbstick and mouse button placement to be switched (this would also let me ctrl-left click more easily to bring up new firefox tabs). Also, the keys feel a little firm, but I might have just gotten used to the notebook keys, although I think the old MS wired natural keyboard, Logitech comfort duo keyboard, and those old dell keyboards definitely have much easier-to-press keys from the box. Still, it's not too-uncomfortable, it just slows my typing down a little, and maybe usage will loosen the keys/springs up. Also, a bit of a warning, I probably should have consulted the manual, but trying to pry off the wrist rest gave me some trouble, and one of the hooks snapped off :( Just be careful if you ditch the wrist rest, fortunately, I have a gel I was going to replace it with anyway (when I use the dock).
I haven't tried the universal remote features yet, but despite my keys/thumbpad issues, I think I will be keeping this thing. Anyway, I still have 28 days to break it in and see if I get the hang of it, and so far, web browsing and typing this post has been a pleasure since I never had to reach for my desk.
In the store only one other keyboard+cursor control unit caught my eye, the Adesso Slimtouch Wireless. I prefer a good touchpad over the less wieldy thumb stick, but the current prices (google Microcenter, and I figure most other places) put the Belkin at $15 cheaper brand new, plus it has a charging docking base with numerical pad. I could put up with getting used to the Belkin's thumbstick in this case, plus, a couple reviews have said the Adesso's touchpad goes wonky now and then and requires reinserting the batteries to reset the keyboard. I don't need range, I only use wireless so I can put the board on my lap, so I know there's also other keyboard/touchpad combos, but nothing as cute and light as the Belkin I've seen, plus as versatile with it's docking base. Plus, I've only seen natural-layout keyboards with the touchpad, and I prefer not to use those in this case.
not alot of activity here, but...
I have been reviewing online both the ADESSO RF keyboard, and the BELKIN RF keyboard... My needs are for a HTPC keyboard, I already use a ATI remote which covers "almost" all of my PC remote needs (but it would be nice to have one remote instead of my current 3)... but I do need a good wireless keyboard... I'd like to use the keyboard for gaming so I need fast response, but it would also be nice to have a R/F keyboard so I can program it into a programmable remote for use with my other home theater devices.
it comes down to... looking for recommendations and experiences, between a good R/F wireless keyboard and a good I/R keyboard... and, I have already used both trackball and "stick" and "pad" and I had bad experiences with the trackballs but that coulda just been me...

I am very please with my Versapoint RF keyboard w/ built in mouse and extra mouse pointer, and I have another one new in a box if you'd like one.
search ebay for "Versapoint" and it's model VP6142. It normally sells for $170 - $190 anywhere you look; I'd like $120.

Has anyone seen this one? Looks like it might be a new item, but I may give it a try as I'd prefer a trackball to either a touchpad or joystick style mouse:

Can speak for the ADESSO RF keyboard, as I just bought it last week. It's literally a laptop keyboard, minus the computer. Plugged in the wireless transmitter, powered up the computer, and started typing. No lag that I can percieve, typing or mousing. Trackpad works just like you would expect--scroll section, tapping to click works (there are also right and left mouse buttons). Takes four AAA batteries (included). Very slim design--lightweight but doesn't feel cheap at all. Seems to be the perfect keyboard for HTPC usage.
Oh yeah, and my computer is running Linux! If only MythTV was plug-n-play like this! Windows setup should be a snap.
Highly recommended.
PS: If you are looking around for reviews for this keyboard (WKB-4000US), do yourself a favor and search on Keysonic ACK-540 RF as well--it looks suspiciously familiar (must be the european version)

Bofferma - at what distance are you using the Addesso? I have to same keyboard, but running in a MCE 2005 setup. When it works, it works great. It seems to be really picky about where the keyboard is, where it's aiming, etc (which is weird for an RF device). I am sitting about 8-9 feet from the PC. I even tried using a USB extension cable to plug the RF receiver dongle into and moving it around to different spots suspecting that it might be suffering from some interference? Well, that didn't do anything to help. Thanks for any input.

Well, I've just started using it, usually at short range as my htpc is running though a 19in crt monitor at the moment (the HDTV is not in my budget just yet). I decided to check it out from across the room and it seems to work ok. Tried it from outside the room (maybe 12+ ft away) thru wood/drywall, and it picked up most of what I was typing--although from there it was sensitive to the direction I was typing from. I should also mention that I do have a 802.11g router (I believe this is at the same frequency as the RF keyboard) and 5.8Ghz cordless phone set up in the immediate vicinity. They don't seem to be causing any interference here, but if you have something like that in your HT area , it could potentially cause problems. [remote controlled cars, or videogame controllers might also qualify]
Good luck!

How do you like the TouchDisc as a mouse? I'm really looking for something that will be good for both gaming (not necessarily shooters but strategy games like C&C) and internet use. Have you tried gaming with the dinovo yet?

FPS is a no go. I tried a little bit oblivion and it works fine. I dont play strategy games usually but I will give it a go this weekend and let you know. C&C means Command and Conquer right?
You can compare it with IBM touchpads for laptops in function(except no click when you accidentally press harder) but I think it is way better.
The mouse buttons under the touchpad works really good once you get used to them.

Ye, its too shily :) - I took some pics of my edge and G7 they are below. The touchpad is good, but its not for gaming. I can sit comfortably on the couch with just the edge and use the touchpad with no problems. You need to get used to the position of the touchpad thoug - I am constantly reaching towards the lower middle of the keyboard [where a laptop touchpad would be] :) :)

I also just got the Logitech Dinovo Edge. I'm actually writing this post with it right now. I've been a long time Lite On Airboard user. I never really thought anything could take their place. For my use the Dinovo may just beat the Airboard and you would really think it should destroy it given that is costs 8 times more. That isn't a typo. My two Airboards cost me $20 apiece. This Dinovo cost me $160. I'm still sort of deciding whether to keep the Dinovo or not but I thought my experience with it might help others decide.
Anyway, here is sort of my mini review. First, I'll touch on the Pros and then the Cons.
The aesthetics are very nice. I must admit it looks pretty cool sitting in my home theater on the cradle. The bluetooth works well. It has lost its signal once in a blue moon but overall it has done pretty well. I type about 60 words a minute and the keyboard can keep up. I love not having to worry about line of sight like the Airboard. The keys have a great feel and are very quiet when typing. I was really glad to see a bluetooth product have the mouse/touchpad right on the keyboard. I certainly don't need another IR/RF/Bluetooth device laying around here (i.e. wireless mouse). When you touch the touchpad it gives you feedback by slowing giving a warm orange glow that gets to its brightest level in about 2 seconds. This goes a long way on the cool factor. I doubt anyone who has bought one of these can resist from just tapping on the touchpad to see it glow every once in a while. The charging on the unit is crazy. Just two hours of charging gives you an entire months worth of use...pretty impressive.
Now for the Cons. I could see how Logitech missed this but the touchpad is in an awful spot on the keyboard. If you notice most wireless keyboards that have a built-in trackball or joystick have them in the upper right hand corner of the keyboard. This keyboard has it in the lower left. If you are like me and are typing with the keyboard on your lap you'll probably get some ergonomic pain by having to consistently bend your arm and elbow back to navigate the touchpad. Logitech could have really gone a long way if they would have just switched with the volume control is with the touchpad. This is probably the biggest gripe I have with this device since it is resulting in pain while using it. The other issue I have is with the size of the keyboard. It is probably the thinnest keyboard you'll ever use but it is also fairly big for a wireless keyboard to be used in your lap. I don't like the silver part that is sort of a wrist rest. Finally, this keyboard is pretty pricey.
Anyway, that is about it. There are a lot of things to like about the keyboard but I'm not sure if I can live with the pain of where the touchpad is. I'll probably give it a few more days to see if I actually keep it. However, I'm certain there are plenty of people out there that will find this keyboard meets their needs.

No real problems with the Adesso here. A friend also bought one for his new HTPC after using mine. The only minor issues are having to wake it up with multiple key presses, and no back lighting. I have to admit I've been tempted by the Dinovo Edge, but I'm not convinced it will actually function much better, and I could upgrade the internals of my aging media server for the same money or less!

I agree with you almost completely. For the price point it becomes average. I dont mind the placement of the mouse, but I do agree the top right would be a better place. I am VERY surprised you didn't mention the "Vonage" Orange on the bottom of the keyboard! HAHA What where they thinking?! I also think it would have been a lot more pleasing to the eye if they used blue LEDs instead of orange but it still looks nice.
I have never had any drop outs or missed keys as of yet (owned for 2 months). The only real complaint is if I go into the BIOS, and axidently touch the mouse pad, the keyboard becomes non responsive. Its no big deal as there is no mouse in the BIOs but if I touch it, I have to plug another keyboard in to save and exit or I have to improperly shutdown. My MB is an Asus P5B Deluxe. Anyone else experience this?
Overall, I am very happy with this keyboard and recomend trying it!
Very high WAF
Edit: I found that, when in the BIOS, its not the logitech keyboard causing to not respond.

I actually picked one of these up to try out as Best Buy had them in stock. I only kept if for about a week though. The few things I liked about it were outweighed by its size, cost, and crummy touchpad. I took it back and was glad I'd kept my Adesso. Even though it's a barebones wireless keyboard, I actually much prefer it for use from the couch.

expensive?... yes. But that will change.
Your right that it is larger than some, but the fact is, when in the charger, it takes up a fraction of tabletop space since it stands up-right. I prefer the size because its real stable on my lap.
If you didn't adjust the speed of the mouse I can see why you would call it crummy. I was disappointed with how many times I had pick up my finger and slide it across the pad to get it from one side of the screen to the other. Speeding up the pointer fixed that without compromising accuracy. I still can't decide if I like the scrolling feature but I think I have it figured out.
What did you not like about the mouse? Location, size, fat fingers?
My favorite is

Speculation about what the price might be down the road means nothing to me if I am purchasing it now.
I adjusted the scrolling speed and all aspects of the mouse. Cursor movement was not the issue, particularly, but the scrolling was. It wasn't that great, and the plain old scrolling on the Adesso works quite a bit better frankly. For me, the charging stand was just a pain, because it requires a huge amount of open tabletop space to use - I'd have much preferred a plain old charging cable. I also had no desire to show off my keyboard in my living room. Lastly, as a top of the line HTPC keyboard at the price they are asking, it's missing some must have features. Where are the back lit keys? Where are the multimedia buttons that don't take two hands and simultaneous key presses to use? And for me, it just felt way too big on my lap - especially given all the wasted space around the edges - the possibility was there to make it much smaller.

well, the 7000 is a decent product but there is much left to be desired.
* trackpad is barely usable but gets the job done when the mouse isn't available
* mouse can lag at times, maybe due to battery or signal quality
* keyboard can lag at times (batteries are new) perhaps due to signal
* function keys suck, they have zero tactile feedback
* non-standard location of the start button is stupid
* a test of patience to push the tiny buttons to connect the m/k to bluetooth dongle (works eventually)
* First Connect technology is more like Fifth Connect, but once connected it does work in BIOS
* Hard to see markings in dark
* Tiny arrow keys
* Hard to align hands on the home row keys as keyboard is lopsided
* Non-standard bluetooth dongle

Is the keyboard for sale on your website yet? Is that a trackball (hope so) or a pointing stick (hope not)?
And what about possible RF interference with wireless routers? I remember having to avoid buying 2.4 G wireless phones when I got my router.

and said to work perfectly well as a PC keyboard. It really doesn't have any business being called a PS3 keyboard since it has no actual PlayStation buttons. I guess Logitech somehow optimized the driver to work with the PS3. I wonder how well it would work with MCE2005 and Vista. I am about to get one to try, either that or the BTC or nMedia keyboards. I like touchpads, track balls, and lastly the other pointer/eraser style and the other alternatives.
How about this one? Anyone try it?

I'm not sure that is even a computer keyboard. It appears to be for the actual PrismIQ player. I don't see an IR receiver to plug it into a computer. I know the PrismIQ device itself is not a Media Center by itself, but rather a streaming-media style device that connects to your main PC. I would be surprised if this thing works with a PC unless you use a USB UIRT and Girder. In that case it could probably be used just fine.

I bought several until I found the Logitech diNovo Edge Wireless Keyboard. It is totally awesome and it has isn't own recharging system. It retails for $199 at BestBuy but you can find new ones on eBay for less. It is sleek, light-weight, with scroll pad and mouse buttons. Now I can finally access my media center computer easily from the couch. I really like the recharding capability too!
Take care...

I can't find any reference to the MS MCE keyboard here although that could be because it's difficult to search on those terms.
I picked one up for $40 at the weekend but can't use it yet because I'm waiting for my MS remote and receiver to arrive.
Any opinions?
Are any of these keyboards suitable for proper FPS gaming? I have a Logtech G7 mouse which is designed for gaming (lightweight batteries and fastRF).
As for a keyboard, I'm using MS MCE keyboard. Its terrible to type on. Really crap tactile response, stiff noisy keys. The additional media related controls are cool tough and fit nicely with MCE
If only Apple made wireless media keyboards. I love my Macbook pro one.

BTC 9029 "green button" Windows media key, 2.4GHz. Battery life has been great so far. Not a glitch yet. Lightweight, not scissors keys, but a decent feel nontheless.

Some online stores has discontinued it. The Liteon Airboard has a range of 7 meters. You can get the SpecResearch from Newegg for a couple dimes cheaper, plus it has a range of 15 meters, that's twice the range of the Airboard.
I read some reviews of the Airboard on another site, there are mixed reviews about range and key input lag. I will associate that with the 7 meter range. That's why I went with the SpecResearch. There were some other issues with the Airboard when used with other hardware that would lock up the system until keys were pressed on the keyboard.
Good luck KKF in finding a good price on the Airboard.

I have the X-Gene from PCalchemy.com for $49. This is what Newegg is calling the SpecResearch keyboard (not sure why they are calling it something different). Only minor problem is the battery cover on the bottom of the keyboard can easily come off. A piece of black electrical tape cured that for me. Nice thing about Pcalchemy is they actually have text support that you can phone and get through to pretty quickly (my experience atleast). The feel of the keyboard and keys is really nice.

I have this one (typing on it now) and it is the best keyboard I've owned. Very slim, silent and is definitely up to the task for Media Center. The battery life is ungodly, and it comes with its own charging station. Beautiful design and comfortable keyboard. I ditched the Microsoft Media Center keyboard for this one and never looked back. Gone is the pointing of the keyboard at the IR receiver as this bad boy is Bluetooth. Very responsive. Sure, it's expensive, but it's so worth it. The mouse disc works great and is MILES ahead better than the Media Center Keyboard stick. Ugh that thing drove me nuts! Scrolling on this is easy, and the light up portions of the keyboard is gorgeous. Perfect for your HT room!

I had nothing but trouble with that one, hopefully you did much better...
With the help of this forum I believe I have narrowed my selection of a wireless keyboard/mouse combo to two Adesso keyboards. The WKB-4000US (tough pad) and the WKB-3000UB (track ball). I am using MCE and will need a transmit distance of 15 feet.
One question I have to the users of both devices would be, if they are connected to your system via a USB, can you continue to use your wired keyboard or mouse as well, or do the wired unites have to be disconnected? I am thinking that I may still want to use my regular mouse for other tasks while sitting at the workstation. Where has the wireless device will be used for some general surfing and selection of shows and movies to watch.
Second question to the users of the WKB-3000UB(track ball), can you clean your track ball without taking apart the entire keyboard? Do you find the track ball gets dirty with normal use?
Any comments would be appriciated, thank you in advance. This forum is great source of information and allows people just getting involved with HTPC to not make as many mistakes as they would on their own.
Thanks again to all! :)

USB Connection. I dont know why you couldn't have 2 seperate input types plugged in. The adesso goes to sleep after 10 min or so, so that helps.
The trackball is optical, so it may not req cleaning, I have no clue...
still happy with the bugger!

Woot has the Belkin MediaPilot on sale today whoever is interested...
I'm a perfectionist and I've had three keyboards. The first one was an Airboard, not sure about the second one.
The XGene that I've owned for a year now is great! It IS RF so I can place it behind items on my coffee table and it always works perfectly. My Airboard was picky about it's location.
Never a problem between it and the 2.4GHz wireless mouse on my laptop, the wireless LAN, or my cordless phone.
The only problem with the XGene was the trackball was too sensitive. I went into windows control panel and easily adjusted this and now it's perfect.
Uses 4 AA batteries that last forever and I never had a problem with the battery door staying shut.
I highly recommend this $50 keyboard. I only wish I had started with this one.
I switched back from the new BTC-RF keyboard to the old one because of the "scroll wheel buttons" that were dropped from the newer version.
It looks like the XGene doesn't have them either.

Comments (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16823202002) about this keyboard are fairly negative. I realize you (monkey3d) had some trouble but others did as well. Even the higher ratings came from people who were less than thrilled. I wonder if Kei has actually used the KB.
I'm still looking for an inexpensive kb with trackball and decent joystick. The BTC9019 and the Scorpius P20 were my top choices but they don't sound that great after reading some reviews.
Any other ideas?
Well I got my WKB-3000UB Adesso wireless keyboard with track ball today, typing this note about 15 feet from the computer and it seems very good so far. Track ball is set in a good position, keys are a bit on the noisy side (although I think I can get used to it). Impressions are good at this point. Will keep you updated as I break it in.

Do any of these work through a wall...I have a wall with my equipment on the backside, my couch on the front side so about 6-7 inches of wall in between and what not obviously no line of sight.
Is the keyboard ergonomic enough to do stuff like right mouse button drag 'n drop (for Windows) while still having your left and on the keys? Or, use it for 1st person shooter games (left hand on keys / right hand on mouse). l can easily do that with my Airboard/Lite-On 7100. Left/right mouse buttons are close to the joystick mouse.

I've got that one too and am thrilled with it. Only used it for a few days so far so I don't know about its durability but so far so good...
