Would anyone be interested in having a discussion on D-VHS coverart? I always make custom covers for my collection, and wanted to know if there were many others interested in this as well.

I would be interested.
Thanks!

Glad to see someone else is excited about this movie coming to HDNet next month. I too have been working on some coverart for this flick. Here is my work... Had to recreate the logo for the spine and did some other photoshop work to get it done.

Do you guys also make custom stick on labels for the tape spine and face?

Chris

djdrock

Yes, I make custom stick labels for the top of the tape, but not the spine.

I have never tried to make them the silver metalic look. I do recall on dvdcoverart.com (now defunct) that there is a silver paper that is available. I never bought any though.

Brajesh...very nice job. I love it!

I just completed my cover for "The Rainmaker", and am pleased that it is being played in the OAR. Woo Woo! This cover was a bit of a booger because again, I had to locate the fonts for the the spine. The font is very very close.

I agree, that a tracer program might be quicker, but I have just always tried locating the fonts.

"Blow Out"? When is this on in HD?

When I make my covers for my recordings from Starz HD and Sho HD ect, I simply download a VHS cover form any online store, cut and paste, edit on paint and wellah a cover!

All these covers look great, but isn't it quite time consuming to do them ?
It would be nice to be able to look up every movie somewhere and just print out the correct envelope - wishful thinking I guess :-)

Brajesh
10-07-04, 09:56 AM
It's definitely time-consuming, but making covers is as much a hobby & collecting movies (to me anyway).

djdrock
10-07-04, 09:05 PM
Some of the covers can be done in a short amount of time. It just depends on source material availability. Some can take several hours. Either way, it is fun. Like Brajesh said, it is part of the hobby!

BUMP......

Thanks to all for providing samples, I'm using them for wallpaper, and loving it! Actually I was wondering if you guys do this sort of thing for a living? I never thought about making covers for my (D-VHS) HD movies (GRIN), where do you get the case's with plastic outer covers, (ie; DVD keepcase's er; D-Theater)? OTOH; I guess a web search for this type of product will provide some vendors. None the less keep posting samples, it's all too neat! And finally, a very positive part to this hobby! ;-)

Take care...... watch, record, and mainly enjoy some HDTV of your choice tonight.

Oliver Klohs
10-11-04, 02:56 AM
Brajesh,
I'd have to draw the line at about 20 minutes per cover, more than that and it takes away too much from my precious movie watching time ;)
Oliver

djdrock
10-11-04, 07:09 PM
Mikey...thanks for the feedback. No, I do not do this sort of thing for a living. It would be fun though...

Anyhoo, yes, just shop around for VHS cases with sleeve. I picked mine up at ebay. I used to go to the video store and ask for some. I would get them free, but most were beat up.

For those of you that make your own covers, how large are the files?

Around 2 to 3 megabytes each.

Here is one of my latest covers..."Boogie Nights". This was really a project of love, as I had a decent scan to work with, but the smaller text for the back of the cover needed to be redone, so, I FINALLY located the original font and decided to redo the entire back...removing some elements and adding a few others.

Soon, I hope to have some appropriate webspace to upload my work for others to enjoy and contribute as well.

Nice work, on the Shawshank Redemption.

I switched away from using "silver" in the borders at the top and the bottom, becasue when printed out it just looked a drap gray.

I switched to using gold borders instead.

I normally customize a basic DVD cover scan, but only one or two qucik changes, nothing like the effort you went through.

I've got a couple questions for everyone regarding their DVHS covers.

1. What type of paper are you printing your covers onto? I've been using some HP glossy card stock, but not sure if that's the preferrred material.

2. What type of cases do you store your tapes in? From the pics, it looks like you've got some nice clear cases.

Thanks for all info!

djdrock
01-06-05, 11:47 PM
1. Generally just ultra-white paper.
2. Just regular VHS cases. Mine have a slight texture to the window. I get mine from "99biz" on ebay.

Brajesh
01-07-05, 01:33 PM
I love doing D-VHS covers, but all that work may be for just another year...when BluRay or HD-DVD replaces my D-VHS collection.

Re: paper, I've started using medium weight/matte finish photo paper. It's cheaper than real glossy paper & more importantly wastes less ink. The quality is close to glossy, but not quite as good.

Re: cases, I bought my D-VHS cases here (http://www.tapeandmedia.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=AT3-CLEAR). They're a tad bigger than the cases D-Theater tapes come in.

I'll send Matt my D-VHS covers as well--the ones he doesn't already have.

Hey guys. This weekend the waiting updates will be taken care off. Right now I am working on a screenplay and it is taking up a lot of my time. Meanwhile I have an ailing member of family that I am giving care to, so free time is limited.

But again, this weekend the titles remaining to be uploaded will be taken care of.

EDIT: OK, I just decided to cram the time in and now the site is updated with everything that has been sent to me. Anyone else looking to send me covers please email them to: mattstsevens @ deceptions.net

1. Photoshop
2. Lots of searching on the net.
3. Lots of font searching and about 2 years of working with photoshop. ;)
4. Generally yes. I modify the back of most of mine, or, just totally recreate a new back.
5. I have hundreds of them. Back from the old days of dvdcoverart.com. But, brands of the world (http://www.brandsoftheworld.com) is a great source.
6. I just made a template that I drop everything into. Big time saver.

Paniro, looks pretty good!

My 2cent

Just that the WB logo all look distorted and not in proportion. Same with the Last Samurai logo on the spine.

As for other things I've noticed a lot of covers seem to cram everything on a page. Dont try to use up all the "empty space" on a design. Space is good... it could create a balance with how the elements interact. Over crowded designs are harder to focus on the subject. For example an indent in a paragraph make it easier to lead into the body of a story, etc..

Anyway good work guys!

Question...

There are a bunch of D-Theater titles that have been shown on the movie channels. Sure some have been cropped, and they're not true D-Theater, but do any of the owners of these titles have the ability to scan and post the original covers? Or is that illegal?

I know that I have over 10 movies recorded that were released on D-Theater that I haven't seen covers for.

Just a thought...

mikey p
02-26-05, 01:15 PM
Question...

Most likely there is an issue, as those are "cc" plus I don't have a scanner, just some nice D-Theater titles.

Actually seems the DVD group(s) got into this too with the snapper cases replacements? Not sure how much you could slide around with changes to any of these to NOT have problems? I would consider a scanner if it would not bring the sky down on us.

In the mean time, I notice a few NEW ONES posted by the guys, a big thanks for all their efforts. Neat stuff for sure.

Take care, have a great day...........

Hey gang, I am sorry to report that I will not be able to continue hosting the covers for the D-VHS titles due to space limitatons at my site. I have a film project coming up that will be using the domain and as the testing on that site continues, I just don't have the space to hold the titles.

I am looking into getting more space and if that happens, I'll get back into it. In the meantime, the other site seems to be a-OK, so at least we all have a way to get the artwork.

Thanks for your understanding.

They brand is Dura-Case from what I can tell, but I don't see silver available anywhere. It is possible that it was a special order for silver cases from the manufacturers. Heck, between about 10 of the largest collections here you could probably buy more cases than Artisan ever used!

If you need online storage space, I have 2GB of online storage and 100GB of traffic allowed each month with my hosting account for my work. Poindexter that is not the same case, you are close though, but this case is much larger, the insert size says 8 1/2" tall the D-Theater cases are 7 1/4" this is the same size case as the old disney video clamshells

Yes,
I ordered 100 VHS cases from them a few months ago. I have used them all and have a lot that don't have an insert (yet) ;)

It might be nice to make a "generic" insert that will allow me to edit the spine movie title letting me easily see what is in the case before a good insert is made.

I think I may edit one of them to create this "generic" insert.

Gary Murrell
03-17-05, 05:38 PM
JSjames let me work on that, i'll make a generic white insert with black title, you guys will need some form of program that uses psd's, to slap in your title

i'll have that finished real soon

here is how i currently label my movies:

http://users.mikrotec.com/gdmurrell1/dvhsmovies.jpg
not the most flashy way to do it but it get's the job done and is quick

i wish we could find these in silver, i betcha we could all get together and fill a minimum order, somebody maybe should contact someone about that

these cases are made by alpha and are sometimes called "bullet cases" that title lends nothing online, but i have discovered their copyrighted name

these cases are again made by alpha and are named "video capsule" TM

they are on many many websites, we just didn't know the name for them

-Gary

JLP
03-23-05, 12:42 AM
Randosel:
One of the distributors I deal with carries the Nexpak Alpha Cases, I'll see if they can get the Capsules from your link. No minimum order from them and I had been using the Alphas and getting them for $.40ea. I could probably do even better if I ordered in large quantity. But I haven't got that many tapes yet.

The custom covers at the bottom of this page would be very cool for the DVHS cases. They were done for the DVD's but I think these were also done for the DVD cases that are 1" wide spines. So, it may be easy to convert to DVHS cases.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to these for sure, as they are in my D-VHS collection. The others posted or linked are all interesting too, neat stuff.

OK, the covers for FELLOWSHIP and TTT Extended are up. (http://www.deceptions.net/highdef/)

TTT is a Word file. You need to print it using LEGAL sized paper. The cover is designed specifically for a Double sized VHS case, since mine is on two tapes and not one.

http://daprogger.mine.nu/ has a terrific cover for GLADIATOR. Do a search, then scroll down to the one marked HDTV. It will have to be altered a bit, but it will work great. VERY high quality.

I'm not sure if anyone would be interested in this one. It's pretty basic. Just an image on the back.
This is for the NBC airing of the miniseries.

I have TITANIC. It was on HBO some time back. OAR and 2.0. It's better than the DVD, but not A+ HD.

Why do so many of these say anamorphic widescreen? No D-Theater tapes are anamorphic - in fact, no HDTV is anamorphic.

Brajesh
04-12-05, 08:59 AM
You're right. They also say "Region 1 NTSC", which is incorrect. I was just mimicking what Universal DTheater tapes had in the back flap. Probably should edit my template.

I am obviously anxious to see Shrek 2 in May on HBO, so, I decided to go ahead and make the artwork for it. The Shrek 2 logo is completely custom, and not a bad replica of the original if I say so myself. :D :D :D

Nathan,

There's a problem on your website with the Last Samurai cover. When you click on it to enlarge to full size in a new screen, it only pops up a fairly small image (maybe 640x480 at most).

Nathan_R
04-29-05, 01:04 PM
The Last Samurai cover (amongst a handful of others) came from here as an attachment, rather than sent to me via email. Unfortunately, I don't have a fullsize version of it. :(

Airric
04-30-05, 11:42 AM
No problem Nathan, I wasn't sure if that was the case or if you accidentally attached the "attachment version" instead of the full size.

If anyone has high rez cover art for Last Samurai (like a scan of the DVD cover) I'd appreciate it so I could make my own cover. Or better yet, if the person who created the cover could email Nathan the full rez version that would be great too.

I had a little spare time today, and decided to make a custom cover for it. I have sent it to Nathan to put on his site. Here is a preview. Enjoy!

Well you guys have got my interest here. I have some questions so that I can get started doing some movies.

I have an HDTV DVR cable box and around 14 HD stations. The box has a firewire output, dvi & component. So which VCR do I need to buy to record on ? Must it be a JVC ? I heard if I bought the Mits I could not buy store bought D-VHS movies but I could record my own and create covers for much less cash.

Last thing. Is the firewire outs on these cable boxes copy protected or what ? Fill me in guys !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. Would a Mits deck record on blank JVC "D-VHS" tapes?

djdrock
05-01-05, 04:41 AM
I use a JVC. It has been basically flawless with around 120 recordings. I think the Mitsu will work. Firewire is the only way to record to D-VHS, but is usually is coded with 5C protection with a "write once" code, so it can not be duplicated more than once.

djdrock,

Thanks for the Last Samurai cover. Much appreciated!

Greenbud,
This is a bit off-topic but:

I'd say, and I think most people would agree, that the JVC HM-DH5U is the very best D-vhs player/recorder today. Even if you don't have any interest in D-theater tapes today, you never know what the future holds..
Also the latter JVC's have DTS sound capability, the 5U has even got a HDMI output:)

Back on topic.

Now that http://daprogger.mine.nu is dead, what good hi-res cover/artwork sites remain besides http://dagonsden.com?

Found these two via DVDTalk--any others?
