View Full Version : Just what's inside a JVC D-ILA?
videobruce 10-09-04, 11:22 AM Well, I received the service manual CD from JVC for the HD-52Z575 (and others) and will post the more interesting excerpts. The Samsung still has the best manual AFAIC, though JVC does have good schematics. Again one per post.

lorenzow 10-09-04, 11:56 AM Interesting stuff! Thanks for taking the time to post. The D-ILA specs differ somewhat from the whitepapers, especially on the pixel count.
videobruce 10-09-04, 12:04 PM I just wished there were photos of the unit as Samsung did and better 'English' in the manual. At least there are schematics unlike the Mits which doesn't have them at all and the 'Japanese English is far, far better than Goldstar (LG).
Hope this helps............
THANKS Videobruce! for giving us insite into these TV`s, Now do you have the HLP`s from samsung I`m still trying to figure out the HD3 engine, thanks ,jo

MVPinBoynton 10-09-04, 12:48 PM Thanks for posting videobruce. Since my D-ILA arrives on Wednesday, I will have a little extra knowledge that I will be scared to use :D There is a lot of good stuff that you posted and it is appreciated.
jeffander1 10-09-04, 01:01 PM Thanks videobruce for the super post.
Does anyone see any values that may change the gray bars ob 4x3 to black? That is my only gripe with my new 52z585.
cluelesspa 10-09-04, 02:18 PM thanks for the post... but sad to see looks like no settings to adjust the grey bars to black on an SD signal
videobruce 10-10-04, 08:50 AM I will have a little extra knowledge that I will be scared to use By ALL means, DON'T do it if you aren't comfortable with it!but sad to see looks like no settings to adjust the grey bars to black It would be at the component level which would mean a circuit modification. Lucky there are schematics with this manual unlike the Mits!
Again , thanks for the complements. For those that have read this thread and the others like this one and say "so what, who cares about the service manual, I won't be doing any of that" (or words to that effect); first place, knowledge is power and the more you or the servicer has the more of a chance the problem gets solved sooner, and second; what if that servicer DOESN'T have the manual?
One thing that surprised me was the lower response from this thread over the Mits thread. I'm surprised that this technology doesn't turn as many eyes since the DLP in the Mits isn't really new (just the set from Mits). I guess JVC's name isn't in the mainstream HD display arena yet.
How much detail is in the manual?
Specifics :
- adjusting focus
- aligning the picture to remove pincushion
- details on the function of the settings in the Service Menu
- any parameters for setting the defaults so Reset is to my specs, not JVCs
I don't mind purchasing the manual, but only if it worthwhile.
videobruce 10-11-04, 08:39 PM Of those 4 points, only the part about "details on the function of the settings in the Service Menu" isn't spelled out!
flcusat 12-02-04, 11:12 PM Does this set has Discrete Power On and Power Off?
BarkingArt 12-03-04, 12:12 AM HEFE-
Awesome! Those are great pics, a lot of info there.
videobruce 12-03-04, 08:41 AM Obviously he is trying to upstage me.....:D :D
Beyond awesome, I'm sure JVC is jealous. Ok, thrill us, why is the set apart???
Does this set has Discrete Power On and Power Off?Ok, I'll bite what's that?
enflux75 12-03-04, 10:14 AM Very nice pics and info videobruce and hefe.
See this thread for more inside pics taken the day of my light engine replacement:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=461086
My pics are a little more crude. I took them in a rush while the repair guys went out to their van.
Can anyone comment on the before and after screenshots of a dark screen? It's much improved over the old light engine but I think it can be better still with maybe a litte adjustment. I actually talked with JVC again after the repair and sent them more pics. They to use the set for a few weeks and take some more pictures to see if the dark screen uniformity gets better or worse.
videobruce 12-03-04, 10:28 AM Since you took those with a input siganl displayed before, the last pic with no input, was that before or after the changeout?
My set was open becase a technician was making a modification regarding HDMI compatibility. This was the first D-ILA he had worked on, so we were both going through the instructions and learning how it came apart. It was a simple resistor change on the board where the HDMI connector is, but kind of a bear to get to for the first time. Now my TiVo has no more problems working over HDMI.

Ok, I'll bite what's that?
Discrete Power On and Power Off simply means that it has a separate mechanism for powering it on and powering it off.
Most units today only have a power button (toggle on/off) and same with the remote. That the power signal for the remote is a toggle. This would not allow a discrete power on/off.
That being said most TVs do have Discrete Power on and Power off capabilities if you use a programmable remote and know the codes.
All of my equipment only have Power Toggles on the devices themselves. Most of the remotes only have power toggles (my Denon Receiver being an acception.) All of my equipment support discrete power on and power off when programmed into a fully programmable remote (i.e. 'JP1' style remote.)

Hope you charged him for instruction time. :D
Ok, c1courtney, now I know what you mean. I always call them mechanical on/off switches that completely kill power to the chassis. Most consumer equipment doesn't have them anymore.
enflux75 12-03-04, 11:10 AM Videobruce,
The very last pic in the thread was a pic of dark screen (no-input) with the new chassis. Only with that pic I used the normal camera mode which I think uses a shorter exposure and lower gain. So the camera did not exaggerate the uniformity problem as much.
But when watching the TV in a completely dark room and watching a scene such as rolling credits or outer space, I still see some minor color shift across the screen. I still get that minor green glow/haze on the right hand side of the screen. It used to be on the left side of the screen and a lot more obvious with the old chassis.
Everything with the new chassis was a major improvement. Color uniformity, while still not perfect, was greatly improved. I'm sure that is obvious from my screenshots. Color fringing was reduced by about 50% and there were no hot or stuck pixels with the new chassis.
I can't really control my el cheapo Sony DSC-P52 camera very well so it's hard to get consistent representations of what I see on the screen. So my next plan is to borrow a scientific grade digital color CMOS camera from the company I used to work for. I'll then take screenshots at various fixed exposure times and try to get the best representation of what I see with the naked eye in a dark living room. Then I'll send more pics to JVC and see if they have some adjustments to help the uniformity. Who knows, if I wait 4 or 5 months and get another light engine, it may be even better. I'm sure JVC will getting better at making these light engines as time goes on.
videobruce 12-03-04, 11:20 AM Could you take the same pics now as you did in you first few posts? Same screen shots with the camera setup the same?
The quality is fine. You could easily see the original problem, no need for a fancy camera, in fact, you don't want one since it wouldn't be a apples-apples comparison!
enflux75 12-03-04, 03:31 PM So I guess you want to see if the uniformity has changed in the last month or so. I am curious about this especially after reading posts about the bulb "breaking in" on JVC D-ILA sets. To the naked eye, it looks like the area of green "glow" may have change shape slightly. I'll have to take some more pics with the same camera as you suggested.
I see various color shifts, mostly green hazy areas across the screen while watching the TV warm up in a dark room. Some of the color shifts change and dissappear while some don't.
I wanted to use a different camera so I could control the exposure time and gain more precisely. I'm trying to get to a point where the picture looks like what I see with the naked eye.
videobruce 12-04-04, 12:29 PM I see various color shifts, mostly green hazy areas across the screen while watching the TV warm up in a dark room. Some of the color shifts change and disappear while some don't.Without a doubt a thermal issue as the optic assembly changes in temperature.
Never heard anything about the bulbs breaking.
Lastblade 12-04-04, 05:44 PM I can't get into the service menu with the Sleeper -> Display + Video Status. Could this have changed with later builts? Mine is manufactured in August.
aBlueSky 12-04-04, 05:49 PM Works OK with my TV (Sept. build date).
Set sleed timer to 0
The press DISPLAY key and the VIDEO STATUS key simultaneously.
No problem...

Did you have your clock set? Mine isn't set, not sure if it matters but no dice.
aBlueSky 12-04-04, 06:19 PM are you sure you are doing it correctly?
I just tried it again and had no problems... (time is set)...
enflux75 12-06-04, 12:42 PM Lastblade,
The trick is you only press the sleep timer button once. Then press Display and Video statut together. The first time you press sleep timer it it will be set to 0. If you cycle through all the times, then back to 0, then press display and video status together, you cannot get into the service menu.

Tried it, doesn't work. Unless I am a total retard, but I believe I am doing it correctly and nothing happens. :(

Yes, it does. I found the codes in another thread but don't remember where. I cut and pasted into my Pronto Edit software and they both work just fine. Maybe search this forum for "JVC Discrete" and see what pops up.

Educated guess and experimentation.
cluelesspa 02-26-05, 12:05 PM I called JVC and asked them about the HDMI fix and they said it was ONLY an adjustment and not installing anything . That they would not make the adjustment unless I was having problems ! So I asked, what if after my one year warranty I find a set box that has problems, he said well if you ask me that question, the answer is NO it would not be covered.
I said are you sure it just an adjustment when the website says its a component install? he had went off line and said yes it is just an adjustment and it depends on which HDMI unit for the adjustment to be made. He also said that the Motorola set top boxes were the only ones that were having issues, when I asked him which units they knew were having issues.
now I read its a resistor replacement ! why cant I get it fixed just in case in the future?

videobruce 07-31-05, 10:12 AM darthrsg; interesting observation, but what does it do for the greys and details?
BTW, quoting LONG posts really takes up allot of unnecessary room. :(

Micah008 08-10-05, 07:34 PM Is there a way to see what the timer value is for the lamp timer? I had mine go just a couple days ago, and I want to tell JVC how few hours it actually lasted.
Thanks.
videobruce 08-11-05, 08:06 AM One would think it would be available, but I don't see anything in the service menu according to the service manual. That's not to say it isn't buried somewhere, but I would think that would be shown.
Japanese service manuals are strange. Some things they go into great detail and others aren't even mentioned.
Maybe this years models might have it if the manual ever becomes available.
SaintOrbital 08-16-05, 12:57 AM Can anyone direct me to what the codes mean in the service menu. I did a quick search and couldn't find a list. Some are kind of obvious while other aren't(probably don't need to adjust those anyway) Maybe there isn't one? I am going on a year with this set I love it but it could have a little better processing power. Seem like it struggles a bit with fast scenes. Just want to get every drop of HD goodness from this beauty of a set.
videobruce 08-16-05, 09:22 AM Depending on which menu you are in, most are a number from 0 to 255.
The entries in the Drive System (D001-D140) that says Do not adjust are hex numbers I believe.
chipvideo 11-14-05, 11:41 AM the s012 register is defaulted at 55 on my set when you turn it down to 31 youll get blacker blacks this is for a component connection 480p :)

Now you will see a list of service manuals. I guess the "C" is Canada (French??)
The SML200605V5 is expected to be out in a few weeks.... (Latest Version?)
not bad for 16 bucks

madrascafe 06-20-06, 03:29 PM How do you know what the "5V5" is?

Otherwise it is a wild guess..
I think

2006 - Year
05 - Month
V5 - version???

MustangSVT 08-04-06, 05:45 PM I need to find out how to change pincushiong/adjustment through the service menu. I'm having some pincushioning problems. Here's a picture.

This problem exists when the picture is stretched and on widescreen material as well (HD, DVD, Xbox 360). Can I fix this problem myself through the service menu with some adjustments, or do I need to call the JVC repair guy.
cluelesspa 08-05-06, 05:46 PM if its out of alignment only slightly on one side you can twist the frame of the TV (the front Screen area). thats what the tech did when he was at my house. you take the top corner and the bottom opposite corner of the TV screen and very very lightly twist the screen.
you can slightly torque the case by say 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch.
bobwalton 06-12-07, 07:06 PM Is there a setting in the service menu that allows you to undervolt one or more of the TVs fans? Mine sound like jet engines. I have a 56FH97. The fans are pretty lound and don't move a whole lot of air. It would be nice to spin them at say 9V instead of 12V. Since the lamp is only $200, I would sacrafice half of the bulbs life for a few db of quietness. Or at least ramp the fans speed based on the temperature of the components. If it gradually increased the fan speeds as the TV warmed up I probably would not notice it, but as soon as you power it on, the fans take off at full speed and never slow down.
videobruce 06-12-07, 10:16 PM Try sound abatement from the rear of the TV. There is no control of fan speeds in any TV that I ever heard of.
PS; Welcome to the forums.

Well, if you go here (http://www.jvcservice.com/store/ProductDetail.asp?Part=SML2006) and look up SML200605V5C you get a price of $86.47. Far from $16, so it may not be the same thing. Anybody know if that is the correct # for a manual for our JVC D-ILAs? I have a HD-61Z786 just over 2 years and nearing 3,000 hours. I'm tempted to buy a spare lamp, but I might buy the service manual at the same time. But is this the correct service manual? Anybody know? If not, I'll call JVC but my experience has been they take orders and "know nothing."
videobruce 06-13-07, 09:34 PM It was my understsnding two years ago JVC stopped selling SMs' on the open market.
Has this changed??
bobwalton 06-15-07, 04:42 PM Try sound abatement from the rear of the TV. There is no control of fan speeds in any TV that I ever heard of.
PS; Welcome to the forums.
Thanks, I have been nosing around these forums for a long time. What do you suggest in the area of noise abatement? Right now a have a small piece of soft wood (pine) angled over the exhaust. It allows air to escape, but maybe blocks a bit of the noise, not much though. Do you have any specific remedies? I think most of the sound has to be coming from the blower style fan deep inside the bowles of the projector. Any ideas are more than welcome. :)

videobruce 06-16-07, 08:56 AM It might be "soft pine", but it is still a reflective surface. A thick blanket against the wall maybe.
navychop; You still got yout set??
navychop 06-16-07, 10:17 AM Lovin' it! With 3,000 hours on the bulb, I'm looking at buying a bulb to keep on hand. I'd like to get the service manual at the same time, but from the posts above, that's not looking good. You got a good idea on how to ID the correct SM and see if they'll sell me one?
I gather you still have yours, too?
BTW, I installed a JVC 56" 1080 D-ILA for a friend who got it as a gift (at my suggestion). He still won't pick up an HD cable box. I got frustrated and hooked up an inside antenna on top of the set. Pretty good reception. Not that he seems to notice. Just wants a "big picture" and leaves it in stretch mode. :(
videobruce 06-16-07, 10:30 AM Unfortunately, I didn't go with JVC because of the poor user interface and lack of input flexibility.
navychop 06-16-07, 10:56 AM Unfortunately?
Grendell 06-17-07, 01:34 AM I was going to ask how to buy a service manual... with my old Pioneer Pro 710, it was simply a phone call.
You've got to be kidding me if it's actually not possible to order one... what for example is an ISF person supposed to do in order to learn how to calibrate the set?
Grendell 06-17-07, 01:47 AM I Google'd this site:
http://www.manualsparadise.com
It looks like you can order service manuals through them, select the brand and put in the model number. I found this for example:
https://www.manualsparadise.com/ShowProductsForModel.do?model=M76553393
That looks like everything that JVC has put out on that particular set so far. I could be wrong though... for my old Pioneer Pro 710 for example, there were two manuals, the thick one contained full schematics and parts diagrams, the thinner one contained menu specifications which would be the one you'd want to use to do calibrations. Both manuals were sold separately.
eapleitez 06-17-07, 02:02 AM I got my service manual from ebay, by pdf. Cost about eight bucks. Actually, it was 4 pdfs, including wiring schematics and such. The actual service manual is the most useful for regular joes like us. It's pretty helpful. For seeing lamp hours, there's a code in the service menu; the service manual gives you the equation to calculate using the code.
renew82 09-05-07, 12:44 AM When put the unit in self check mode, I notice in the SYNC section It states M: NG S:NG HD:NG
Does anybody know what that means and how to correct it?
I don't have a service manual for this unit but would be interested in getting one. Print or CD doesn't matter.
Thanks.
Sean

I know this is a old topic. but , My brother has the 52" version silver. and he needs to clean the inside of the screen. due to a dust smear.
