View Full Version : Official Comcast 6412 w/ iGuide Discussion
shannonv 11-01-04, 09:48 PM Okay, I'm not sure if there's some official "official" process but I'll give it a try. Sounds like iGuide on the 6412 is now out in the wild on Comcast networks so to avoid a train wreck of overlapping threads, I'm creating this one. I'll gladly cede the first post to someone who wants to write an FAQ. I will do an FAQ and official thread for FE 1.7 soon.
Looking forward to more 6412 users out there.
SonomaSearcher 11-02-04, 03:55 PM Sounds like from what I read, you will be starting that MSFE/6412 thread next week. :)
I'll start with a first question. Time tracking bar stays on the screen too short in my opinion (about 3 seconds or less). I haven't found any settings to change it. Anyone else knows if there is a way to change how long is time bar displayed?
markjrenna 11-03-04, 03:26 AM Comcast NJ - Union/Verona
No 6412 or i-Guide for me yet, but this is what I compiled relating to the i-Guide prior to Comcast deploying it:

You can increase it up to 15 seconds using the Setup Menu. The item to adjust is called Flip Bar Timeout. This also makes the channel information appear for up to 15 seconds every time you change channels. I use the Exit button to clear the screen.
Thanks. I thought that was just for the channel info bar that comes up when flipping the channels.
I assume the answer is no, but is there a way to hide the channels I don't subscribe to in the guide? I loved this feature with my Ultimate TV.
stoli412 11-05-04, 12:17 PM So now that I've had a chance to play with the new 6412 and i-Guide, here is my review.
General
First off, this is a HUGE improvement over the tan/blue guides. The guide has a much higher resolution, so a lot more information fits on the screen at one time. Having a 90-minute guide is great too. Second, it's pretty speedy. I don't know how fast it works on the 2000 boxes, but on the 6412 everything is pretty much instant. Channel changing speed also seems to have improved over the 6208/blue guide. Third, I haven't seen ANY ads. I'm so glad they finally realized this was taking up far too much valuable screen space. Fourth, the picture in guide and mini-guide are nice features; I like to browse while still watching a show. From what I understand, the picture in guide won't work on the 2000s but it will on all other boxes.
Gripes: There IS a way to have the guide display only your favorite channels, but it's much more difficult than it should be. First set up your favorites. Then go into the main menu and select favorites. The guide comes up and only your favorites are displayed. This is the ONLY way I've found to access the guide in this manner, and it's a lot more steps than simply pushing "guide."
One nice feature of the blue guide was if you pushed "guide," the guide by time would come up. If you hit guide again, it would switch to guide by channel. The i-Guide doesn't have this feature. I wish it did, because you could then easily switch the guide between time, channel, or favorites.
HDTV
It could just be my imagination, but there seem to be fewer picture errors. Also, having a true HD search option is great. On the blue guide, it would just show you what HD channels were available. On i-Guide it actually shows you what's on those channels.
VOD
The "new" and "last chance" flags are great, especially last chance. However, there seem to be a few bugs to work out. On my 6208s, VOD worked flawlessly 90% of the time. On my 6412s, I'm getting a lot of errors. First, the mini video window does not display when in the VOD menus (it's JUST the menus, and the current channel is playing in the background). Second, I often get communications errors when trying to start a program. Third, almost every program tiles and pixelates so badly that it's unwatchable. Fourth, the program info seems really confused. If I select a certain show, then select another, part of the first show's description gets carried over to all subsequent shows I browse.
Comcast must be working on these issues. I think I read somewhere they were having problems getting VOD to work on the 6412 and that's part of the reason it took them so long to release them. Obviously it must be a work in progress.
Gripes: There's no time bar as with DVR shows. You still have no way of knowing how far you are into the program (unless you stop it, of course). I was hoping they'd include this, but oh well.
DVR
Two tuners finally! Series recording finally! Time bar finally! No longer is this a glorified VCR. The blue guide was so limited in its recording abilities; most of those limitations are now gone in the i-Guide. The DVR functions are much more intuitive and useable now. Plus, contrary to rumor, the 30-second skip is alive and well with the 6412 and i-Guide. Also, there is now a 60x fast forward. I haven't found this rumored 15-minute skip function though.
Gripes:
1. No time compensation on fast forward or rewind. Whereever you press play is where you are left off.
2. The search option lacks the ability to search by director/actor and the ability to save searches. This may be related to gripe number 3: incomplete guide data.
3. The incompleteness of the guide data causes problems with series recordings. I've set up series recordings for shows like Lost, Desperate housewives, and Arrested development as "first-run only" and they're working as expected, probably because these shows aren't syndicated or repeated to death. However, I've also set up series recordings for shows like The Simpsons, Malcolm in the middle, King of the hill, and Trading spaces. All are set to "first-run only" but since these shows run multiple times per week in syndication, the box is still recording them. Some of these syndicated episodes record, some don't. To me, that indicates incomplete guide data or sporadic use of the "repeat" flag in the guide data.
4. Guide data doesn't seem to be stored on the hard drive. The box froze up and I had to unplug it. After plugging it back in, it had to download all the guide data all over again: a process that takes several hours. Well at least it doesn't erase your scheduled recordings and series recordings.
5. I don't like having to hit "swap" to get to the other tuner. If it's recording something on the first tuner and you try to change the channel, it should just know that you want to watch the other tuner instead of putting up a big warning box about changing the channel.
6. 120 GB hard drive?! You have to be pretty careful with how much HD you record. Otherwise it will wipe out older recordings to make room, even if you haven't watched them yet. I think a 250 GB drive would have been a much better choice. Also, external firewire drives should be permitted/enabled. I believe a company has already said they plan to make them, and 5c over fireware should shut up the content owners worried about piracy. Alternatively, someone needs to find out if you can clone the factory drive and replace it with a larger drive. Don't look at me...I'll wait for someone else to try it and post the directions. ;)
Summary
All in all, the i-Guide is a MAJOR leap forward. However, as with any new software, I really hope this is "version 1.0" of the i-Guide. There are definitely some bugs and quirkiness to work out. But the completeness of the guide data should be the absolute number 1 priority. This is why TiVo works so well (95% of the time): the guide data is extremely detailed.
SonomaSearcher 11-05-04, 12:32 PM Regarding ads, unfortunately the iGuide does allow for them. Comcast is simply not implementing any ads on the iGuide right now.
I have a Seattle area question re: Microsoft Guides.
I was all excited about the i-Guide, because we will be replacing our Tivo (which has a pretty great interface, but no HDTV and no dual-tuners). Is it looking like the i-Guide will *not* be deployed in Seattle because we're getting the Microsoft guide?
If that's the case... this blows. Microsoft can't write DVR sofware at all, and the previews look terrible (slightly better than tan guides... but MUCH worse than i-Guide). Any word here?

I know a few UltimateTV devotes who would love to dispute that with you. The previews on the MS web site are for older versions. FE 1.5 (which I have played with) is way better than the tan guide (and faster). I would love to get 1.7 this month but will have to wait a few more months.
jsheldon_us 11-05-04, 02:53 PM Ok,
First I am grateful that I got one so early. They are not yet rolled out in my area completely.
That said, the following observations/requests apply:
1 - my box (and others, particularly a few in Chicago (see posts on Comcast Chicago thread) are rebooting constantly on their own after a few remote clicks. Either the box is bad or the software or something. I am sure this will work itself out.
The rest here is what I have been able to learn...
2 - two tuners rules. Auto switch during recording would be nice. Perhaps and A/B indication on the guide.
3 - I have a 16:9 TV, this gives me more real estate for the guide. I would like them to take advanatage and display and extra half-hour or something. Use the screen!
4 - Some channel changing has been slow.
5 - The analog stuff still looks pretty choppy. I was hoping for an improvement. HD and SD look GREAT!
That's my initial 24-hour version. Will add more as I learn it.

Mine also re-booted without warning several times the first day. I haven't had a problem since.

I tried a second time to peer through the cooling vents in the chassis of my 6412 to spot the hard drive size. As you point out, it is 120 GB. That's a 50 percent increase over the 80 GB Seagate on the 6208 ! The 6412 has a Maxtor. That means we should be able to record about 18 hours (9+ movies) from HBO or at least 12 hours from the highest resolution channels such as Comcast Sportsnet HD.
I've never seen this pointed out, but my guess is that the numbering convention of the Motorola converters is that the last two digits of the model indicate hard drive size; e.g., 6200 = 0 GB (no hard drive), 6208 = 80 GB, 6412 = 120 GB.
Maxtor now makes a 300 GB hard drive, so when can we get the Moto 6430?

When the 6412 is on, press Power then Menu. You can enable close captioning from that screen.

DSperber 11-08-04, 04:48 AM Comments from my nephew in Chicago suburb, who just upgraded from his 6208 to a 6412:
"We've had the new dual-tuner DVR from Comcast for a few days. It's certainly a big improvement in all regards over the old DVR, but it's not Tivo. The software still comes from TV Guide, but it's a new version with most of the features one expects these days, such as the ability to follow programs as they get rescheduled. Really, except for a clunky interface, it does most everything I need. The dual-tuner functionality is very nice. Schedule conflicts aren't much of an issue now. Overall, the experience is tolerable."
Here in LA I've been holding off considering an upgrade to my 6200 until the 6412 became available. I guess it's getting close.
butvinik 11-08-04, 09:11 AM Just got 6412 from Comcast here in NW Chicago burbs. Here is my $.02
Love:
- seamless dual tuner recording, no more scheduling conflicts
- HDTV recording / playback , perfect quality picture and sound
- pause / rewind live HDTV broadcast
- 2 weeks of guide
Hate:
- disk is too small for HDTV, only ~10 hours of HDTV recording
- only 15 minutes of HDTV pause time because of small disk
- no graphics overlay when in HDTV mode. I use modulator to send A/V to rest of the house, but can't use 6412 when on HDTV channel because there is no graphics overlay in 1080i mode on A/V outputs.
- VOD doesn't work most of the time. This is probably not 6412 issue, but Comcast problem on their VOD server, need to call and complain.
Overall, I'm happy with 6412, just need to find a way to increase capacity. I wish NBC would broadcast more shows in real HDTV like CBS does.
dbernhard 11-08-04, 11:38 AM I just had by 6208 box switched out for the 6412. While doing the swap, the installer was doing some work on the lines in the back of the house. He replaced a section of cable and removed an ADCAM (I think) filter/trap on the back of the house.
Now, the picture looks grainy or noisy. I don't think that it is the box, because the picture looks grainy on the other TVs and the main TV from the cable split directly to the main TV as well.
I also had the box spontaneously reboot last night, which I read was likely due to too much or too little signal strength. My question, then, is there a way to determine the signal strength the box is receiving.
What should I get if the signal is too low or too high? I'd call Comcast to bring that filter back, but I don't want to have to take another day off of work if I can fix it myself.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Chris Beveridge 11-08-04, 03:08 PM The same thing happens with Tivo, at least in the DirecTivo version I have. Simpsons is a prime example. If I want to record just new Sunday night episodes and do a season pass for first run only, it'll go and grab everything because syndication doesn't get listed properly.
What I believe you need to do, mind you I haven't seen a 6412 setup yet or the new iguide, is to set it to record JUST a particular station so that'll cut it down some. But it's fox, so fox runs it a few times a day. Your best bet is to set a manual recording and just eyeballing Sunday nights once in awhile to make sure there are no changes to the schedule.
Simpsons was one of the shows with Tivo that was just sucky to try and record, much like the Daily Show on Comedy Central. Both got manual recording setups.
stoli412 11-08-04, 03:42 PM I have a dual-tuner DirecTivo, and I rarely encounter this problem. Once in a while (maybe once or twice a month) the Tivo gets confused with syndicated episodes of The Simpsons or South Park, for example. However, the 6412 seems to be habitually confused with ANY show that has new episodes and syndicated/repeat episodes on the same channel (Simpsons, Malcolm in the Middle, King of the Hill, South Park, and Trading Spaces are prime examples).
On Tivo, I'd say the guide data regarding syndicated episodes is correct 90-95% of the time. On i-Guide/6412, I'd say it's correct 10-20% of the time.
This is not only an inconvenience, but an issue of recording space. First, most of my series I have set up to save only one or two episodes because of the small hard drive. So, for example, if it records the "new" episode of The Simpsons on Sunday, and then records the three syndicated episodes on Monday, the new episode gets deleted before I can even watch it! Second, I record Malcolm in the Middle on the Fox digital channel since I have an HDTV and the show is in widescreen (filmed 480p, broadcast 720p). That takes a lot of space itself. So, if the 6412 also records all the syndicated MITM episodes (which are 4x3 but still broadcast at 720p) on the Fox digital channel, then it takes up a LOT of space and still deletes the "new" episode before I get a chance to watch it.
The only work around is to go through the scheduled recordings list and delete all the syndicated episodes. This is time-consuming and inefficient. And, what if the show is on a special night and/or time, and I don't know about it when going through the list? If I assume it's a syndicated episode and cancel the recording, then I miss a new episode.
I don't think the problem is with the i-Guide itself; I think it's the guide data. Comcast or Gemstar/Tribune (the two main sources of guide data) needs to pass ALL of it to the box. Tivo gets its guide data from Gemstar/Tribune (I can't remember which), they don't add in new/repeat flags or anything else, and it works 90-95% of the time. So obviously the new/repeat data is almost always provided, just someone or something isn't passing all of it through to the software on the 6412.
The 6412 with i-Guide has the potential to be as good as or better than Tivo, but only if the guide data is complete! Garbage in, garbage out! (Can you tell I'm frustrated?)

Comcast NJ - Union/Verona
Why does it get deleted? Is there no longer a setting to keep the show until you delete it?
I have this feature on my 6208 with the blue guide.
After reading forums over the weekend about the 6412 availability in the Dallas area, I called Comcast this morning around 9AM to order my DVR. As luck would have it, they had an opening today, and the box was installed by 11:30!
Talk about your perfect timing!
I've been a ReplayTV user for three years now, and went through major withdrawals earlier this year when I upgraded to HDTV and had to move my ReplayTV to the bedroom.
I only had a few minutes to play before going back to work, but I noticed that the programming guide stopped at 6PM tonight. All of the program listings after that time were listed as 'To Be Announced...'. Hopefully, the full two week guide will be downloaded by the time I get home this evening.
Is this delay in the programming guide consistent with new installs?
SonomaSearcher 11-08-04, 05:43 PM Originally posted by JimmyA

I have this feature on my 6208 with the blue guide. It gets deleted because I have the series set to keep only 2 or 3 episodes (due to space constraints). So unless I go into the specific "new" episode and tell it to save until I delete, it will get deleted to make room for the offending syndicated episodes. It's just too much of a hassle to have to remember all of this stuff. I certainly could do it, but I shouldn't have to. The box should do it.
Plus, what about the less technically savvy members of my household? I'm supposed to tell them to remember to do all this when they're used to Tivo doing it for them? All Comcast has to do is fix the guide data...that seems like a much more reasonable solution than making me jump through all kinds of hoops to do what the box is supposed to do by itself. After all, the feature is called "first-run only." That's what it says, that's what it should do.
grittree 11-08-04, 07:18 PM Stoli, how do you do 60x fast forward? Four button presses only gets me approx 20x.
With the 30sec skip, this thing is pretty usable now.
stoli412 11-08-04, 07:33 PM I'm not sure it's 60x. But it didn't seem to take very long to fast forward through an hour at the fastest speed, even on an HD program.

The problem of a show now being labeled as a repeat is either caused by TVGuide or the programmers that provide the data to TVGuide. I am sure it will improve as time goes on.

I programmed the code 141 to an unused button my JP1 remote. This is the code for MUTE on the 6412. This way I am able to "un-mute" the box until they fix this bug.
LaxStar18 11-09-04, 08:56 AM That is great now if i could figure out to put that code along with the swap button code in my harmony remote we would be ready for bussiness
You could program it to the remote that came with the DVR. At least it's a temporary solution to the MUTE problem.
dbernhard 11-09-04, 10:25 AM OK, the box rebooted again last night. Which is twice in two days. Each time it rebooted, I swapped between the two tuners.
I went in and looked at some of the diagnostics based on this website:
http://cjhengineering.com/hdtv/cablehdtv/dctdiag.htm
My SNR (signal to noise ratio) is consistently at around 20-25dB, which was classified as 'good' or 'fair'. My AGC (automatic gain control) is at around 75% which was classified as 'fair'.
For Monday Night Football, the correctable 5 second error couns were in the 2500 - 3500 range which seems like a LOT of errors for a 5 second sampling.
It would seem that my signal is too low (or there is too much noise). Will a signal booster help this out?
good to fair for SNR and AGC seems okay to me. The error counts do seem high, but they are correctable. A drop amp will probably help with SNR and AGC if it's a high quality one. It probably won't help with the error counts. It could be that the errors are originating somewhere outside of the cable delivery system, i.e. upstream of where the HD signal is inserted into the cable system.
Out here, when we have break-ups on cable, there are also break-ups on OTA. It might be worth a service call and have them evaluate your signal.
Best,
jeff
JimPeterson 11-09-04, 06:06 PM Last week I stumbled on the fact that the navigation arrows mimic TiVo's transport controls. When viewing a program the > is fast forward, ^ is play, < is fast reverse, and the center button is pause.
With the 6412 silver remote, I find these buttons much more convenient than the identified transport controls located toward the top of the remote.
Does anyone know if Motorola or Comcast documents the features and functions of this remote? I received a two sided instruction page that described basic functionality. It seems a shame that a person has to learn what the 6412/remote can do by watching this thread to see what people have stumbled on.

The Mute button on the remote is to mute your TV audio. The Mute being talked about here is an internal 6412 mute.
I never use my TV for sound, so forgive my if this sounds ignorant. If I just press "mute" on the 6412's remote, I am actually muting the TV sound, not the STB itself? If I program an unused button the the 6412's remote with the 141 code, I will actually be muting/unmuting the STB?
Thanx
I just got the standard software 6412 and setup all my series recordings for the CSI's and other shows on the HD channels. I noticed today that these series had reverted back to the non-HD version of the same channel. Anyone else experienced this and have a fix? It is killing me since I really don't care to watch the non-HD version of these shows.
This is a big issue and needs to be resolved for these boxes to be mainstream like the TiVo or replayTV. The box should be able to only lock on the HD station and not revert to any other channel.
Brajesh 11-10-04, 09:23 AM I may have missed this, but the 6412 can dump to D-VHS just like the 6208 right? I'm getting ready to swap out my 6208 for a 6412 & wanted to be sure of this before I did it.

You are absolutely correct. A button programmed with code 141 controls the mute on the STB, not the TV.

Thank you, it worked like a charm!! Now I hope they fix this bug with the next upgrade.
butvinik 11-10-04, 11:37 AM MUTE issue may not be a bug, but a "feature".
What if you route audio through Dolby Digital reciever (I'm sure a lot of ppl do that to get 5.1 audio) instead of TV speakers and you forgot to turn off your reciever at night. DVR will wake up at 2 am to record something and audio feed will scare your family to death :-)
Now, MUTE feature during automated power-up addresses this issue, doesn't it?
Just my guess, since there is no good documentation from Motorola. I can't call their crappy PDFs "documentation".

Please post them here if you have them. Thanks. No, none of the Motorola STBs have discrete on/off codes. It's really a PITA for macros and automation. My solution is to just leave the box on all the time. By doing that you also avoid the "mute" bug.
Some will say it's not good to leave the power on all the time because the hard drive will be running/buffering constantly. However, Tivos are built this way (there is no power button), and they work fine. I'm sure the 6412 will be fine too.
Anyone notice if they fixed the Firewire networking problem? It didn't daisy-chain as a proper Firewire device before.

I know the 6208/6412 never really does go off even though it looks like it is off. The only true off is to pull the power cord from it.
When the STB is "off" there are still things happening such as:
- The STB is still receiving Guide data.
- The STB has to turn from "off" to "on" to tune to the desired station to record.
Probably the Audio/Video out is the only functionality that is off when the STB is "off".
I leave my 6208 on all the time. So far no problems since I received it in May.

I've always left the power on for my 6208 and now the 6412 because of the lack of discrete on/off codes and have never experienced a problem. Besides, if it were to fail, I'd simply take it back to Comcast and get a new one. It's not like I've spent a bunch of money for a Tivo.

No replies on this yet.... Is this an isolated case or is this a widespread problem? I would like to know before getting a 6412.
Thanks.
Mark0824 11-10-04, 02:07 PM Just dropped off my 6208 in Marietta, GA and picekd up the 6412. Much, much better. the guide responds fatser, less delay when changing channels and many more options in the guide. It is nice to have the channel still playing in the corner ofthe screen when you go into the guide so you do not miss anything.
The remote will work almost all functions on my Sony 34HS420. Much more TIVO like feel and options then the 6208.
I have had it ony for an hour or so but big improvment.

Yeah I am wondering as well since this is a pretty annoying attribute of the box for me.

I disagree, I can hear harddrive activity stop everytime I turn off the unit. Because of buffering harddrive is always active when there is video passing through, and it will shorten it's lifespan. True, since we rent it from Comcast, who cares if HD dies, but it would be unpleasant to deal with Comcast CSR and wait for replacement.
Edit: removed false HDD lifespan data. Current HDDs are designed for 5 years of service. Sorry for misinformation.

Do I understand that you swapped boxes at a Comcast Cable store in Marietta?
I've got a 6208 here in Decatur and was told I would have to have a service call to
swap. What's the trick?

I have a half dozen PCs that I have never turned off in years (some have been spinning for 4-5 years) and I have not had one hard drive failure. I know they eventually will fail but 4-5 years is a long time to keep a DVR. I would be surprised if we had these 6412's for 2 years.
I have a 6200 & 6208 and I had to swap them out a total of about 6 times for what turned out to be software issues related to firmware. All 6 times Comcast quickly responded without hesitation. I must be fortunate to live in an area where the customer service for Comcast is very good. I say, leave the damn thing on and fuggedaboudit!

Where are you getting your data? Most hard drive manufacturers advertise several hundred-thousand hours MTBF ratings on their drives. Like a previous poster, I leave my home PCs on 24x7 and have only had one drive failure - and that was the result of a bad batch of drives from the manufacturer (and even then, it took two years before the drive failed).
I would be surprised if drive quality becomes a problem on these machines.
butvinik 11-10-04, 03:40 PM I apologize, my info regarding HDD lifespan was a bit outdated
To prove myself wrong I will never shut off my 6412 again :D
Mark0824 11-10-04, 03:53 PM TO KM:
The local stores do not have phone numbers so you need to go by one. The Alphareatta amd Marietta stores can hand out the DVR/HDTV boxes. I got my 6208 (remote would not work but worked on the TV) today andthey had a the 6412 there and I switched out. I to was intially told that I had to have a service call but this is incorrect and most of the CS people do not know it.
DVR Problem:
After palying with the new box I no longer have any DVR functions except record and the date and time as well as the guide info still has not dlownloaded (it has been plugged in for 4 hours). When I go into the serive menu and under DVR it sales FALSE under the DVR being activated yet the CS told me she sent a singal to the box with all the proer info and the box is receiving the data. I have a tech coming out on Friday. Anyone else have this problem
butlermd 11-10-04, 04:31 PM Does everyone have a swap button? I just got a 6412 but my remote does not have a swap button. So, If I am watching a show and hit record, I don't seem to be able to switch to the other tuner to watch something else. Has anyone programmed this into a universal remote? I use a harmony but haven't set it up yet for this new box. Worse comes to worse I guess I'll have to back to comcast yet again!

Actually, the code is the "deployment" thread. I will re-post the information here.

Here you go. Follow the same procedure as for 30 second skip, but program 00236. This is the code for Swap button functionality. Don't ask me how I found it, I was bored and went through every code from 00210-00236 until I got it
Here is the exact procedure to program a swap or 30 second skip to the remote.
1) Press the "Cable" button at the top of the remote to put it into Cable Box control mode.
2) Press and hold the "Setup" button until the "Cable" button blinks twice.
3) Type in the code 994. The "Cable" button will blink twice
4) Press (do not hold) the "Setup" button
5) Type in the code 00173 (for 30 second Skip) or 00236 (for Swap).
6) Press whatever button you want to map the skip or swap function to.

Are you sure you have the remote for the 6412? I know in my area they quickly ran out of remotes, so they were giving people the remote for the 6208 which does not have a swap button. I was one of the lucky ones that got the remote for the 6412 before they ran out.
I would keep bugging Comcast until they give you the remote that has the swap button and the other PIP buttons. The PIP buttons aren't activated yet, but at least here in Jax, they say they will be activated in Dec./Jan. timeframe.

Evidently, in some areas they will only give you a new box if you get it through a service call. Here in Jacksonville you can pick up a box at the main Comcast facility.

grittree 11-10-04, 08:12 PM Scolumbo, with the 6412 remote can you get the 30sec skip? I'm not giving up my silver remote if it can't.
scolumbo 11-10-04, 08:22 PM Actually, I think there a two different remotes for the 6412, one is silver like the 6208 remote, and one is brown (mine). Both of them have the PIP and Swap buttons, but the brown one doesn't have a Setup button which is how you would program the 30 sec skip.
I'm going to try to exchange my brown remote for the silver when they become available here in Jax. Last I heard, they were still waiting for them to arrive.
btw, did you get your box exchanged for one that works?

Something I didn't notice before, but under the Series Priority Options, there is an option to choose either "Record This Channel Only" or "All Channels" for the program to be recorded. If the All Channels option is used, maybe that's why it would record the SD rather than the HD channel for the program.

Good thought but unfortunetly I do set the "this channel only" option on my series. I think it may have something to do with how the channels are read by the 6412. If it is reading the actual station ID instead of the channel number then the SD and HD channels would appear the same since they are multicasts of the same affiliate. Just a guess at this point.

It is probably more a function of the i-Guide. TV Guide needs to start differentiating SD and HD data that they send to the STB for this feature to work as we want it too.

Both units housed in identical cases and you can keep your power cord, that's what I did for the same reason.
Has anyone had a problem with the 6412s turning themselves off? Both my units turn themselves off at exactly 10pm CST every night. I've looked in every menu I can think of trying to find a "auto shutdown" setting, but to no avail.
So far, it's just been an annoyance, but one day I'm sure I'll be recording something that goes past 10pm and I'll end up with a truncated recording.
RScottyL 11-11-04, 09:33 AM I just wanted to say that I am here in Irving, Texas, and I went to my local Comcast facility yesterday morning and upgraded my box. I currently have an analog tv, but my old digital cable box did not have SVHS out. I just was unhappy with the picture quality, knowing that there was at least one step up I could use.
Anyway, I called Comcast the day before to see if it would be possible to upgrade, and they said yes...just bring in the old box. So, I went in this morning and walked out with a 6412, brought it home and connected.
My first impressions are very good. First of all, the picture quality has improved, as I suspected, going to SVHS connection. Second of all, I noticed the change in the guide and menus, which I love. I hated the old yellow guides with advertisements on them, very distracting and ugly. Third, the channels do seem to change faster, although there is a slight pause, becuase the PVR unit starts recording it so you can pause live tv.
So, like I said, I am very happy with this unit so far. I will record some stuff tonight and see how that works. I do not have an HDTV, so I cannot compare full hdtv resolution, hopefully after the first of the year I can get me a nice tv.

The 6412 will be my first digital cable STB. I already have two power components, whose plugs don't fit through the opening in the back of the furniture.
Could someone please measure the dimensions of the plug?
(preferably in millimeters)
I want to have all the wires in place when the installer gets here; in order to that, I have to know whether this STB will go inside or outside the furniture.
Thanks

Problem with my 6412 (Comcast Chicago):
I decided that it would be a good idea to check the status screen on my box, so I turned it off, hit 'select' and went into the status screen. Browsed around, checked a few things out, no big deal right?
Wellllllllllll, when i exited the screen and went back to an "off" box, and I turned it on again, no picture. It would display the guide info, change channels, go into the guide, etc. ONLY when i played a saved program from the dvr section and then exited it would the picture come on.
I unplugged it for 30 seconds, plugged it back in, and that seemed to fix it b/c I was able to turn it on and get a picture...but now it is back to its old tricks, and I have not gone into any status screens.
Any advice?

I can only guess that you set HDTV picture mode on your box to something that isn't compatible with your TV's component input. In this case when you stumble on HD channel you lose picture, but when playing SD program from DVR your box switches back to SD override mode.
Try connecting via S-Video or Composite and check status screen for HD settings.

I am having the same problem, and it doesn't specific to HDTV channels or not. If I watch something stored on the hard drive in HD or SD it works fine. But if you turn the box off and back on all channels are blacked out until I watch something from the hard drive, then all channells including HD work fine again.
murphy63 11-12-04, 11:40 AM I was mucking about with the menu and had the same thing happen. Tried reversing the order - cable off then tv off or vice versa - but no picture until I played a recorded program.
It was working fine til then. Oh well. I will continue investigating here as well.

acaoacao 11-12-04, 12:42 PM Is there any way to defrag the 6412? I am curious because I hoping that it would help with the pixelation with HD.
superrubber 11-12-04, 01:01 PM Ok, I'm going nuts over here in Chicago (Comcast). They have delivered and set up my 6412, but there is one big problem. They gave out the old remotes, with, from what I'm told, no intention of getting any of the new remotes. The new remote (the DRC-800) has the PiP feature and a few others that the remote being distributed doesn't have. The old remote has none of the settings features for aspect ratio, and the "on demand" button does nothing but make a "1" show up on the top fo the screen for a couple of seconds. I have searched high and low for somewhere to buy the DRC-800 but I can't find anywhere that sells it in packs of under 200.
Comcast told me all about PiP on the phone when I asked and then you can't even use it. They have a sticker on the remote that says "TV/VCR = swap" to go between tuners. I'm not totally sure that the features will work even if I have the buttons for them. There is no way to access the PiP feature without the remote though.
Anyone that has one, and has already programmed it into your universal remote......would you be willing to send me the remote so I can pull the codes, and then I'd send it back? I would pre-pay you for shipping with paypal if desired.
Suggestions? Knowlege on the subject?
Thanks,
jeff
SonomaSearcher 11-12-04, 01:32 PM There are no PIP features on the 6412. So, even if you had the DRC 800, you would not have PIP.
As to the swap function, was your TV/VCR button correctly reprogrammed to accomplish that function? If not, see the posts earlier in this thread on how to program the swap function onto one of the remote's buttons.
chimchim5 11-12-04, 01:34 PM @Jeff
Look in the HDTV Reception forum for the Chicago - Comcast thread. That thread has the three setup codes you will want. These three are: 30 second skip, swap, and un-mute. You should be able to learn the codes to your current remote ( I used the tv/vcr button ) one at a time and then use your universal remote to learn the IR. Hope that helps.
@all, I noticed that the new style of remote with the PIP section at the bottom has markings for day+ and day- on the B and C buttons (above the shuttle buttons). These two buttons are functional in the new Iguide software to jump from day to day in the guide. The bad news is that the old remotes do not work using the same buttons.
Steve
superrubber 11-12-04, 03:17 PM Yeah, the swap works, i just found it weird and hacked that it was on a sticker on the remote (leading me to believe it was the wrong remote). I'll have to call Comcast about the PiP stuff since the sales rep talked about it with me (obviously not knowing what she was talking about). I HATE when companies give false info. SonomaSearcher: do you know if PiP will be available since it is on the remote? it boggles my mind that any dual-tuner device doesn't do PiP.

I only asked for millimeters, because it is easier to be precise. :)
That seems like a small plug, it is even smaller than the Xbox's plug.
Well, it will fit, because I have an opening the width of the furniture, the only issue was the height, and of course the plug can be turned either way to fit, but this will fit either way.

If you mean the silver remotes as the old remotes, the +-day buttons work fine on the Iguide 6412. Combined with the trivially easy way to add 30sec skip and tuner swap, I see no need to ever get the new ones until PIP is ready.
I've had my 6412 for 5 days now, and I've noticed that I don't appear to be getting an LFE signal sent to my SVS subwoofer.
Is this, perhaps, a setup/configuration problem in the 6412?

tennberg 11-13-04, 02:54 AM We are just starting to get the 6412 here in Boston through Comcast. I got mine this afternoon earlier than their expected release due to serious issues I've been having with my HD service and the 6208.
Couple questions for people in other cities:
1. What is the model number on the bottom of your 6412? Mine says 6412/2005.
2. What firmware do you currently have? The firmware on my says 09.12. I'm not sure if this is standard for all Comcast users.

So far, it's just been an annoyance, but one day I'm sure I'll be recording something that goes past 10pm and I'll end up with a truncated recording.
I've noticed that if the box turns itself on to record something it will automatically shut itself off when that recording is done (even if I start watching something else in the meantime). Could this be what you are seeing?

I have a theory as to what is happening, but I haven't had a chance to test it yet. Last night, the 6412 did not turn itself off at 10pm - and I was only recording one show that ended at 10pm.
I think what's happening is that if both tuners are recording shows that end at the same time and you are watching a pre-recorded show, the box will turn itself off when the recordings end.
Looking back on it, that's the scenario every time the box turned off. I record a bunch of the 9pm dramas on the various networks (Law & Order vs CSI:NY, etc.), but I'm usually watching something else while those shows are recording. When those shows end - off goes the box.
I'm going to test this next week, as I have a campout with my son this weekend.

Comcast NJ - Union/Verona
Is the box on or off before the recordings start?
If the box is off it will go off when the recordings are done.
If the box was on when the recordings start, the box should not go off when the recordings finish.
Is this what you experience or am I way off?

The same on both accounts.
I've had the Motorola 6412 dvr installed yesterday (to be exact they replaced the single tuner one I've had already). All is fine except there's no programming on one of the tuners - it reads "One Moment Please. .... be available shortly". It's been like that since it was installed. All is fine on the other tuner of the same box. Comcast has reset the box at least twice by now to no avail. Anyone with similar problem? I'm thinking there might be something configuration wise that I could fix myself as the signal definitely is coming to my box. I have little to none faith in Comcast reps.
thanks.

Any advice?
Don't go into the diagnostic screen. :)

Have the box swapped out sounds like the second tuner is bad...that should not happen as any configuration parameters are shared by the tuners.
an update to my problem of the picture not coming on when i turn on the box, i came home from work on friday to find that the box had received an update, or was in the middle of an update, becuase it rebooted, lost the time, guide info, menus said "one minute please", etc....
but like magic, now it turns on ok with the picture "syncing" up correctly and displaying.
comcast voodoo magic i say...

How do I access the second tuner?
1) Press the "Cable" button at the top of the remote.
2) Press and hold the "Setup" button until the "Cable" button blinks twice.
3) Enter 994. The "Cable" button will blink twice
4) Press (don't hold) the "Setup" button
5) Enter 00236 (code for Swap).
6) Press whatever button you want to map the swap function to. i used the "tv/vcr input" button since it has no real function.

DmbFan1 11-14-04, 10:45 PM Got my 6412 by surprise today with the new remote (they were supposed to come 11/20). Everything seemed ok until the installer left. The box keeps shutting down and rebooting everytime I press a button on the remote.
Called Comcast and they will be out tomorrow with a replacement box.
Kind of strange but they were saying a few boxes were having the same problem. I'm in Delaware County, PA. 19008 (Right outside of Philly)

I'm trying to get the STB Mute programmed and I can't get the above to work for me on my silver 6412 remote. I press the "CABLE", press and hold "SETUP" until the "CABLE" button blinks twice but when I enter the 141 code for STB mute I do NOT get the double-blink of the CABLE button accepting it. Any ideas? Thanks.

raidbuck 11-15-04, 10:18 AM I have a 6412, but now my DVI port doesn't work. Comcast is coming out on Tuesday (tomorrow) to give me the new remote with the "Swap" button and I called in to let them know to check the DVI.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a setting in the diagnostic menu? Does it have to be "turned on" by signals from Comcast central?
Thanks,

I have a PCF file (Pronto 3000) for the 6412 that I'd be happy to share if you can read that. Contact me at ewv [at] fnal [dot] gov.
butlermd 11-15-04, 12:32 PM For the record the posted procedures for mapping the 30 sec skip and swap buttons worked great on my silver remote (without swap/pip) and I subsequently transferred them to my harmony remote and all is working great. Thanks to all who helped.
stevehof 11-15-04, 12:59 PM The iGuide documentation shows an Audio Setup menu, which includes a setting for Dolby Digital (On or Off). My existing 6208 does not have a comparable setting.
Anybody know what happens to the digital audio outputs (optical and/or coaxial) when you set Dolby Digital to Off?
Does it:
1) Turn off the digital audio outputs; or
2) Output 2-channel PCM stereo through the digital audio outputs; or
3) Something else?
acaoacao 11-15-04, 01:09 PM IS DVI-D output enabled on this?
I just received my 6412 this weekend. In the audio set up of my box it does not have the dolby digital on/off. What it has is a setting for advanced audio where you can set the compression level and choose from mono, stereo, or matrix stereo. As per the manual I have mine set to heavy compression, as it says this is for output to a dolby receiver, and matrix stereo. It seems to be working just fine as my receiver picks up and switches to digital if I tune to a channel that is outputting digital audio.

JohnFeld 11-15-04, 03:37 PM I also received my 6412 this weekend. The installer had no documentation for it (but it's somewhat like the 6208 I had). When I power the box off , a red LED lights ("record") on the panel; when I power it back on, it goes out. Is this normal? The red LED is on the right at the top. I was not recording anything and nothing shows recorded in the menu. I do have a record scheduled a few nights from now. I unplugged it for a while, but same indication. Any thoughts?
Thanks John F:confused:

Well, they came in, replaced the box, same result - no programming on one tuner.
I've also had the problem other member noticed - the red record light is on when the box is turned off. I was not recording anything, there was no recording scheduled. The funny thing was that if I swapped the tuners to non-working one the front LED spelled 'rEC' - as if it was recording. I have cable internet as well, and a non-dvr Comcast box (DCT2000 I believe) all hooked up to the same cable drop. Is it possible the signal is just too weak top drive both tuners?
I will be getting a 6412 in a few days, my first HD STB.
Besides connecting it, which I will do, what will the installer do to activate it? And how much time?
I will be getting the new remote, so, I guess I should press the swap button to test both tuners.
What else should I check while the installer is there?
Can the DVI and Component be hooked up at the same time, so I can switch back and forth to compare, or does one get deactivated?
Sevenfeet 11-15-04, 11:47 PM I believe all ports are active (component, composite, s-video, and DVI). I used this on my previous 6208 to compare component vs. DVI with my CRT-based RPTV....in my case DVI was better. Interestingly, HD video is scaled down and displayable on 480i output like composite and s-video...it's not great but it's there.
the red led on the right indicates that you are recording on the tuner not selected. if you swap the red led will go off and the display will read "rEC" nice feature to let you know that your program is being recorded.
my gripe is that the box turns itself off when it turns on to record. anyone figure out how to 'tell it' that you are now watching so it wont power off??
on one of my tuners the flip bar does not indicate audio type but does on the other. anyone else experiencing this, or are both working for you?

If you leave the box on all the time it will never have to power-on itself and so then it will not turn off itself.
Simple work-around...
DmbFan1 11-16-04, 09:11 AM jmnk,
Did they split the signal going into your box? I had the same problem with my 6412 at first then the installer called in and asked what the problem was. They told him to split the signal with a 2-way splitter. Hook the one line directly to your receiver (should already be connected), then the other line, connect it directly to your TVs tuner............
RESULTS: Both tuners should now be working flawlessly.........
Post and let us know what happened........
I have a problem with my service and wanted to see if anyone else has encountered this. About 1/2 my SD digital channels have real problems with the DVR. I can record the channel, but not play the recording. I can watch it, but not rewind or fast forward in a reliable fashion. Sometimes it pops up an alert box that says "Call us. Code HW."
Comcast has been unhelpful, shall we say. They keep wanting to swap the box and send someone to my house. Their equipment shows the signal level is fine in the house, then they leave. My guess is that I'm gettting a corrupt digital signal, not low signal strength. As far as I've been able to get out of them, no one knows what "Code HW" is.
Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas?

I have a friend with a SA Tivo. He is thinking of replacing it with a 6412 but he has a question I could not answer for him. Does the 6412 need to be addressable ? He has a RF modulator and a notch filter so he can redistribute the output of the tivo to any room in the house. Would the same thing be possible with 6412 ? How does it get its guide data and firmware updates ?

Not sure what you mean by addressable. Unlike Tivo or ReplayTV 6412 gets everything from cable provider via digital cable channels, so no network or phone connection is needed. It is important, however, to have clean return path similar to Internet cable modem, so you can't have old inline amplifiers. If you must amplify signal you have to use bidirectional amps.
My setup is similar to your friend's. I split incoming signal 3 ways - to cable modem , 6412, and Channelplus DA-550 amp/distr panel through lowpass filter. Then, composite out from 6412 goes into Channelplus modulator, which then feeds into DA-550 modulator input. Result: up to 8 TVs across the house get equally strong/clean signal with up to 4 local modulated channels, one of which is 6412 output. I use others to distribute 400 disk DVD changer and VCR across the house.
One problem with 6412 in this setup: there is no graphics overlay on HD channels over composite output. Ex.: when you watch HD channel from 6412 on remote TV over modulated "house channel" you can't see iGuide or any DVR controls. I learned to blindly control the box or switch to non HD channel.
Hope this helps.

Sevenfeet 11-16-04, 02:49 PM So far, I've had the 5100, 6208 and now the 6412 in my house (not to mention the original DCT-2000 dinosaur). Comcast Nashville like many cities is rolling out the new iGuide.
The good things:
Interface seems to draw reasonably fast (but not lightning quick).
120 MB hard drive is larger than the 80 MB HD in the 6208.
Dual tuners seem to work (yay!)
Firewire seems to work (my Mitsubishi RPTV recognizes it)
DVI works with no glitches
New iGuide seems to be a noticable improvement over the old one (it couldn't be much worse).
The bad things:
Takes *forever* to download the program guides once installed (this is probably a local problem on my end)
No method of additional HDs, external or otherwise
Firewire still doesn't do HaVi with Firmware v9.12, which means no program guides are passed to HaVi compatible devices (like my aformentioned Mitsu RPTV)
The new remote control has taken a huge step backwards. The previous remotes for the 6208 and 5100 has buttons of various sizes depending on the need and usage of the function. So buttons like the volume control, DVR button and others were large while rarely used buttons were smaller. Now everything is smaller with tiny hard-to-read letters. It looked as is they tried to cram everything on a certain form factor and just ran out of space. The swap button is small and toward the bottom of the unit located with the PIP functions...I actually had to scan the remote a couple of times before finding it. It also reminded me that DirecTiVos don't have swap buttons since the software is smart enough to change to the second tuner if the user wants to change channels but are recording on the current tuner.
Rick,
I'm in Nashville (Antioch) too. At the top of this page, I describe a problem under the title Code HW. For instance, I see this on BBC America, 129. Could you give a quick test and see if you see something similar.
Thanks,
Eric

Thanks. not sure what you mean by figure out, but if you're watching a show and decide to record it, it will record the available buffer, if you had been tuned since the show began it will record all of it, or at the point you tuned to that channel.

Unfortunately there is no buffer recording feature with the new i-Guide. If you have the new Microsoft FE 1.7 then you will have the buffer recording feature. Please note that only Seattle, WA is getting FE 1.7 at this time.
markjrenna you are incorrect. do you have a 6412? have you used one? the iGuide DOES have buffer recording, i've recorded the buffer plenty since i got it.

Well I stand corrected.:D
I didn't realize the i-Guide had that feature. I will certainly check it out.
Thank you.
RelDudeGOP 11-16-04, 04:34 PM you will certainly check it out?
does that mean you have it already in nj?
markj when u do, please look at this: check the flip bar on both your tuners and tell me if they both indicate audio-type (DD, 5.1). one of my tuners shows it and the other doesn't. weird.
only annoying thing about buffer recording, which and upgrade should fix, is this:
if you are watching a program and hit record, yes it will record the available buffer back through the beginning of that program BUT if u change your mind and hit stop, you will lose the entire buffer and you'll be forwarded to live. not good. of course it will be stored in the recordings list so you can go back and play it from there but to avoid this just let it record until you're done watching the program.

Yes, call them and tell them you have a bad picture. I just has someone out on Saturday for what I described as a lot of Noise/Interference/Graniness in my picture. He had his machine that he hooked up to the cable (outside and inside) to get the signal strengths - which he said were strong signals.
He checked all of the connections/splitters, didn't really do much to help my picture. The best thing he did in my case was replace a two-way splitter splitting the signal between the 6412 and the TV itself with a 3-way splitter leaving one open (signal too strong which increased the graininess). This actually did help a lot of the channels, but it still isn't as good a picture as I had with the 6208 box (and the ADCAM filter/trap that was in the back of the house). This he said was to reduce/eliminate the signal back to the head end.
BullittMustang 11-16-04, 07:17 PM Does anyone know how to reset the remote back to factory specs?
BullittMustang 11-16-04, 08:45 PM OK, I have figured out how to put the mapped key back to original function.
1. press the device key where there is a remapped key
2. press setup until the light blinks twice then let go
3. press 994 light blinks twice
4. press the destination key twice(the key that you remapped)light blinks

I'll be back home on Saturday. I'll check then for you. BTW, what version of SW and FW is your 6412 running.
I may have an older version of either the i-Guide or Firmware or both. I was told by Comcast (not a CSR) that a new version of the i-Guide is coming soon.
Firmware 9.12
SW 71.44 1203
Did they say what's in the new release?

Are the 6208 and 6412 codes the same for skip and replay ?
Can I use a Single-Link DVI cable with the Dual-link DVI port on the 6412 (and my GWII LCD)?

These things are connected via cable. I am surprised that the firmware can't just be flashed/upgraded. Flashable firmware is not a new innovation.

OnlyEwe 11-17-04, 08:50 AM I am about to get one this weekend.
From what I can decode from the threads, if I connect the
component cables to a 1080i-capable TV, I can also
connect a second SD TV to the RF or S-Video outputs?
Will I only see SD programming on those SD outputs?
Anyone know of a "down" converter so I can mirror the HD 1080i output
on an SD TV? (silly, but temporary requirement)?
I want to mirror the output on to a second TV, which is SD, when the primary TV
is HD...
This will work fine, except there is no RF out on the 6412. - only composite and S-video.
Yow will see all channels on the SD TV including HD (will be letterboxed), but you will not see any menus - those are only sent out the Component (or DVI). No downconverter needed.
DVR and VOD also work fine this way except no menus.
I have this exact setup - a small SD tv in my kitchen that just mirrors the HD tv in the living room, so the person in the kitchen can still watch the same show - just in SD for now. It is one big room, but you just can't see the main tv from the kitchen, hence the SD TV mirroring. I want to eventually get a 17 inch LCD HD panel in the kitchen, and then use DVI on the main tv, and component to the kitchen to achieve HD mirroring.

I know about the 30 second skip but I also would like to advance through a recording with more rapid skips. For example, getting to the second hour of a 2 hour recording is very tedious at FF4.
Is there a hidden code for a longer skip?
Interactive 11-17-04, 10:44 AM butvinik: What Channel Plus modulator are you using to send the 6412 composite signal through your disti/amp? I'm using a cheap radioshack mod now with Tivo and the results are horrendous.
I've also seen conflicting reports on the on-screen graphics. Are they not available AT ALL on the composite/S-vid outputs or are they just not available when watching an HD channel?
burger23 11-17-04, 11:13 AM First, I apologize for the cross-post. The post below was orignially posted to the 6412/MSTV group since I am part of the Comcast/Microsoft Guide (MSTV FE 1.7) rollout in Washington state.
No one has responded to the post- perhaps someone in the group is knowledgeable. If the 30-second skip is hardware related, then it would seem to me the the fix listed should work-if it is software controlled, then we have a completely different issue.
Thanks for any help
===================================================
I saw this post on the iGuide Forum
Here is the exact procedure to program a swap or 30 second skip to the remote.
1) Press the "Cable" button at the top of the remote to put it into Cable Box control mode.
2) Press and hold the "Setup" button until the "Cable" button blinks twice.
3) Type in the code 994. The "Cable" button will blink twice
4) Press (do not hold) the "Setup" button
5) Type in the code 00173 (for 30 second Skip).
6) Press whatever button you want to map the skip or swap function to.
I tried this, using the FAV button. No luck. I then found the codes
here (http://www.hifi-remote.com/cgi-bin2/ueic.cgi?cbl_0476) and tried the STOP function, 00174. It DID work. So, 00173 works with the 6412 and iGuide software--but not with the 6412 with MSTV FE 1.7 software.
Ideas, anyone??

I believe all ports are active (component, composite, s-video, and DVI). I used this on my previous 6208 to compare component vs. DVI with my CRT-based RPTV....in my case DVI was better. Interestingly, HD video is scaled down and displayable on 480i output like composite and s-video...it's not great but it's there.
Comcast (and Motorola) actually have a clue! They plan on making the DCT-6412 *the* standard STB for DVR (not just HD). There are some TiVO users that have zero interest in HD; with the DCT-6412, Comcast can go after them as well (with a basically future-proof solution; use the 6412 as a straight DVR now, and add HD later...*without* another truck roll! Simply swap connectors and go!).
That was the single biggest reason why the living room TV has never been upgraded to HD: that's where my Mom's VCR is (and she tapes her daytime dramas on it). HD would (of course) make the VCR obsolete. Now I can add a *second* DCT-6412 (the first 6412 will be in my bedroom, where my 30" Philips is going) in the living room (the TV in there has both component and S-video inputs, and component-in I is playing host to her DVD player), connected via either component-in 2 or S-video-in; when the TV gets replaced, I change connections to suit.
butvinik 11-17-04, 11:24 AM I'm using ChannelPlus 5445 with 4 inputs. They make variety of mods depending on number of inputs you need and IR integration. You can pick and choose depending on your budget. Check eBay, you can find used mods for great price.
I had troubles finding empty channels for my mod, even those channels not used by Comcast were bad because of noise coming from headend. I ended up inserting lowpass filter before distr panel and using channels 80-86 for modulator. This provides perfect PQ on modulated channels. Downside is you can't use digital STBs on remote TVs, but I wasn't planning on it anyway. My main STB and cable modem are split before distr panel.
P.S. This topic should be discussed in Home Integration and Distribution forum.

The specific software (MSFE in your case) would have to recognize the command (and know what to do with it)...Not sure if MS implemented it...best bet is that forum (or if Shannonv will tell you).
Since IGuide can do it you know its feasible from a hardware perspective...MS (or the MSO) may have decided it's not politically correct to implement it in their softwaare :(

I too have this setup. I on the 6208 I had used the RF out to feed the Kitchen under cabinet television where I had an A/B switch (direct cable / STB). Since the 6412 does not have an RF out I purchased an RF Modulator at Radio Shack and ran the s-video and L/R audio from the 6412 to the modulator and RF to the kitchen TV. The HDTV (via component) shows the guide and I never really looked to see if the kitchen showed the guide as well. I will check tonight.

The "mute" bug seems to occur when the box turns itself on to make a pre-scheduled recording. It has happened to me both times I have done this since getting my box last Friday. I DO NOT KNOW what happens AFTER the recording is done as I didn't wait that long to fix it. I programmed the mute code into the remote so I could control it manually. You can also just turn the box off and on, but of course that ends your recording.....
Yes you can go in to a comcast office and ask for the correct remote (it has a "swap" button and Picture-in-Picture buttons). That is what CSRs have told me to do though now I have a tech that is supposed to be coming by this Saturday to drop one off (with charges waived obviously). BUT they might be out of stock currently on the remotes in the Chicago area (that is what the person who set my appt. up told me).

well, I have had Comcast visiting my house three times (plus they wanted to come for the fourth time because they apparently have not realized yet it was finally fixed). Anyway, they replaced the box but I'm not entirely sure if that was needed. I have cable modem and old DCT2000 on the same cable drop so I had two two-way splitters before signal was coming to the dvr. When the box was replaced it has not initially fixed anything - again no programming on one tuner. So we pulled the power plug from dvr (not just turn off), removed one splitter, and turned off the cable modem. After a moment we reconnected the power and it worked! It obviously took a while to have all the channels but you could immediately see and hear something on both tuners. I have not reconnected the DCT2000 or cable modem until later that evening, after all channels and guides were available. I was not brave enough to suggest we try the same procedure on supposedly bad box since I had it working. After all it is likely it WAS the bad box.
good luck.

Well the story I'm sticking to for receiving the "new" remote is that...over time it can be a bitch to find anything on this forum......like me trying to find the old discrete codes for Sony tv sets that I once obtained off of here. I couldn't find it when I spent 5-10 minutes the other day.....
If I have the remote...I don't need to worry about reprogramming anything should something happen......
But that brings up another question. Is the "mute" programmed on the new remote?

So the problem could be a signal issue or a bad box. I am pretty sure I have a two-way split (cable modem & tv) and then a power-amplified and 8-way split. Are there certain signal levels that I need for dual-tuners ? I know the signal levels can be seen from the diag screen but have never done it before, it is the one measure in particular I should be looking for ?

acaoacao 11-17-04, 06:21 PM Is there a diagnostic screen for the 6412? If there is one can you guys tell me how to access it?
Regarding manual timer recordings, is there a way to set them to re-occur on a weekly, monday-through-friday, or daily basis? I don't see any options for this on my 6412, but I need to be able to do it since the series recordings sometimes are unusable because they record way too many repeat episodes of some series.
Well my 2nd tuner has lineup information now but now the box sometimes reboots itself when changing HD channels or swapping tuners. I am pretty the rebooting while changing channels only happens on one tuner but I not sure. Is there any way to tell what tuner I am on ?
I also noticed a problem with my audio. I have a harmony remote and it only changes the volume of my receiver on one of the tuners.
I plan to call comcast right after the box records Lost.
DmbFan1 11-17-04, 09:06 PM I'm split with a amped up signal going into a three way splitter (Tv, Cable Modem, and an additional tv) but what I was suggesting to you was to split the signal in the back of your main tv. The cable line that's running to your television. That's what I did here and the dual tuners both kicked in. If you read my earlier post, I was having the same problem also until I split the line going into my main tv.
Results were no signal loss (was metered) and both tuners then worked............

Right, PIP. This will provide this function for a display, like my plasma, that does not otherwise have it? Like the mini image I see when the Guide is on screen? If so, that would be nifty.

Yes you can do that and it is a way to see the digital channels on the aux TV set. Or even to have music elsewhere in your residence if you hook up to a sound system or a computer and turn the STB to the digital music channels.
A setup that I had in our old house (which had no upstairs cable connections) was to run antenna cable from the cable-out on the STB through a hole in the ceiling to a VCR upstairs (the main TV downstairs got its signal via red/white/yellow cable from the STB). From the upstairs VCR, I ran red/white/yellow cables to an upstairs TV set and antenna cable from the upstairs VCR out to our computer, which has pretty good stereo speakers.
Our old house was not wired for cable except at the main TV location. I used an A/B box so that upstairs we had the choice of the above setup or non-digital cable channels, which would allow for using the tuners in the upstairs VCR and TV to change channels. One lead on the A/B box was the STB; the other from a line split off from the cable going into the STB. I am sure that better ways to do this exist now.
I tried using a splitter in our present house for a different reason - to have PIP ability using our main TV's internal PIP, but the splitter it seemed prevented error free communication between the STB and Comcast and I had to remove it. Refreshes from Comcast did not go through.
Can anyone please tell me the correct name for "red/white/yellow cables"? Composite? I know that Component means the deal where you have five cables three of which are video.

The cable line that's running to your television. That's what I did here and the dual tuners both kicked in. If you read my earlier post, I was having the same problem also until I split the line going into my main tv.
Results were no signal loss (was metered) and both tuners then worked............
Are you saying you had too much signal going into your 6412 and split ? I am confused. I connected my 6412 feed to my first 2-way spliter and disconnected my cable modem and my box is still rebooting. Comcast is "hitting" the box now and also sending a tech tommorrow; they think it is a bad box.
DmbFan1 11-17-04, 09:54 PM dozens,
I'm actually talking about getting the second tuner to work on your 6412. When the installer came over I had the same problem. Only one of the tuners worked on my 6412. He called another installer and the other installer told him to hook a two way splitter to the cable line going into my cable box. So we tried it and both tuners worked.
In other words try splitting the cable line going into your 6412. 1st run one line into your 6412 of course, and 2nd hook the other line directly into your tvs tuner. Worked flawlessly here.
Just to note about your box rebooting often. My first 6412 I received kept rebooting everytime I pressed a button on the remote in cable mode and any button on the 6412 itself. They did come and replace my 6412 the next day and so far ever since the box was replaced everythings working perfectly.
Interactive 11-17-04, 09:56 PM DmbFan1: I must admit I am totally confused by this. Why would they want you to split off a line directly into your TV when you're not going to be using the TV's tuner? Is this just intended to lower the net signal level that the cable box sees?
DmbFan1 11-17-04, 10:01 PM Hey DOZENS, IM me, I'm online as we speak.......... It's kind of tough to keep posting the same problem.......
IM me in aol........ arjrug is my name...........
im signed in as of 10:00pm
metallicafreak 11-17-04, 10:09 PM I have the 2nd tuner issue too. I has a splitter for cable modem and the other to the box. Any sure fire solutions yet?
FREAK!
DmbFan1 11-17-04, 10:10 PM Dozens,
I too was confused when the other installer told him to run a two way splitter on the existing line. I was literally laughing inside BUT as soon as he did it both tuners worked....... Even if it didnt work I was going to keep it that way anyway cause I originally had it connected that way cause sometimes I like to use the direct feed going into the TV anyway so.
metallicafreak 11-17-04, 10:15 PM Ok, fixed the tuner problem. I switched tuners, then hit guide and changed channels from channel 1 that it was set at to any other station. Boom, programing there and all is well.
YEAH!!!
FREAK!
Zack Allen 11-17-04, 10:17 PM Reply to DmbFan1 and Interactive: What I believe is the case is that the second tuner on the STB "works" if you can watch one show while saving another. I had to learn this without the aid of a manual, since Comcast does not see fit to give their customers manuals for these devices. It seems that the two-tuner feature of the 6412 does not allow for the box to *send* two different programs though its outputs, but rather just to *receive* two different signals through its input lead, which allows you to save one show and watch another via the STB.
The advantage of using a splitter with one line going to the STB and the other going to your TV set (or your could go into your VCR and then out from their to the TV set via either red/white/yellow cable or antenna cable - or both - which allows for PIP using your TV set's internal PIP feature. You can watch non-digital channels in your TV's PIP window and the signal from the 6412 in the main screen and swap between them. If you do go through the VCR, then you can record a show that is on a non-digital channel through your VCR while saving an HD show on your 6412 and watching a third program in HD on your TV set. And, you can monitor what the VCR is recording and/or surf non-digital channels via the TV set's antenna cable. Mind boggling, eh?
But this works only if the splitter does prevent the 6412 from communicating both ways with Comcast. I had to remove my splitter, so no PIP at my house for now.
If I am wrong and the 6412 does allow for you see both the program being saved and a program that is being currently broadcast, at the same time via a split picture or PIP feature, please tell me.
bob_vdi 11-17-04, 10:20 PM Had my first 2 customer service driven system reboots. (Neither fixed it)
I'm NOT getting HDTV version of WGN or ABC. (Worked 2 days ago)
So I'm gonna see another tech on Sunday Afternoon. :(

DmbFan1 11-17-04, 10:29 PM Zack,
PIP works exactly how you stated in your post. As far as the PIP commands on the remote itself with the 6412, nothing works. No command lights even turn on.........
Poochie 11-17-04, 11:00 PM While I wait for these to arrive in my area (SF Bay Comcast), I thought I'd ask you folks who have them now the following ... is there any way within the iGuide to change the component (or DVI) output signal "on the fly" ?
I currently have a 6200, and to change from 720p (which I use for ABC/ESPN) to 1080i (which I use for the rest) or vice versa, I have to power off and get into the black&white setup screen. Obviously this is less than ideal, especially if doing so kills any current recordings (not sure if that does or not). While I could live with having everything coming out of the DVR in one format if I had to, I'd prefer the scaler in my PJ do all the work, rather than a 720p->1080i conversion in the STB followed by 1080i -> native panel in the PJ for 720p source, or the equivalent set of conversions if I had globally set the STB to 720p out and I had a 1080i signal. Thanks in advance!
Brodequin 11-17-04, 11:10 PM I swapped my 6408 for a 6412 today. Unfortunately, the digital and HD channels along with On Demand do not work. For these, I get the "One moment please. This channel should be available shortly" message. And this occurs on both tuners.
I called customer service and they tried what they could from their end (mainly sending various signals to the box) with no success. A tech is coming Friday. Maybe I'm having a problem with a weak signal? Bad box? Guess I'll find out soon.
the "one moment please" could be the box trying to access ondemand, which at first it can't and once it can then takes long time. it's on channel 1 essentially. comcast is aware of it and working on it. in the meantime if one of your tuners says "one moment plese" try changing the channel on that tuner. not sure if this is the fix-all for this particular problem but it already worked for a few customers. try it.

controller2k 11-18-04, 12:51 AM After having time to play with the new box, I can say WOW. First of all, iGuide isn't all that bad at all. In many respects it has all the functionality a Tivo has (though the Tivo is still more user friendly).
Everything from smart series recording to the time bar to season passes (so to speak) is all there.
The window where live TV shows while you are in the menu is quite nice too. DD 5.1 indications are nice. The quick guide is very nice. I'm actually impressed that I can get such a high end HDTV recorder for less than Tivo costs me a month.
I tested both tuners - something I have actually never experienced before in my life. It is wonderful to be able to record one show while watching another live - or record two shows and watch a third. And be able to schedule two shows at the same time on different channels and have it still record. Amazing stuff.
I am also happy the speed of the box has gone up (notably, when switching channels - it is almost instant), and that Comcast/iguide has finally seen it fit to up the resolution of the GUI to something reasonable. I am sure passport/MSTV still has it over iguide in this area, but the new iguide is a massive improvement.
The only fault I can really see is the lack of HD space. 120GB doesn't cut it with HDTV - 15 hours is nice but really basic. They should be loading these things with 300 or 400GB drives for a decent 40 hours of HDTV time.
Oh, and sometimes the box stops responding to commands and then catches up.
Otherwise, I am thrilled with this new box and the new guide.
JuiceRocket 11-18-04, 12:52 AM Has anyone else noticed the "ticking" or "clicking" sound their 6412 makes? The box on the whole is quieter than the 6208, but my wife and I can really hear a ticking sound when it accesses.

You should be seeing no uncorrectable errors and few correctable ones. (Though I say if they are correctable, who cares?)
The SNR is fair in-band, and while the AGC is good you may want to boost the signal. See other threads I have written regarding my experiences....

I noticed it a lot with the 6208 (the box sits on a rack only a few feet from the viewers). The 6412 seems about the same, if not at times actually quieter to me. I guess it all is relative....
Zack Allen 11-18-04, 07:32 AM Update regarding what the two tuners feature provides: Last night I set up two programs to record simultaneously and it worked.

I hit guide, channel up, channel down, etc.
Sometimes its blank, sometimes "one moment please", some times has some random pixels on screen.
BTW I just got it installed last Saturday...
jimb408 11-18-04, 08:43 AM Just installed on Tuesday (11/17) and I love it. Only problem I'm having is On Demand doesn't work. I keep getting "unable to connect to server". Now I also have 2 other boxes (not sure which ones - they're the old black ones) it works on 1 of those (about 50% of the time) and has never worked on the other. I've had signals resent a number of times and that never works. Guy came out and checked the signals - everything OK. So now I have this new box and the same thing is happening. Tech is supposed to come out Saturday - we'll see what this guy says.
