I'm not familiar with how to apply the term "bleak" to black levels.
From Dictionary.com...
Gloomy and somber: “Life in the Aran Islands has always been bleak and difficult” (John Millington Synge).
Providing no encouragement; depressing: a bleak prospect.
Cold and cutting; raw: bleak winds of the North Atlantic.
Exposed to the elements; unsheltered and barren: the bleak, treeless regions of the high Andes.
I guess depressing may apply?
MichaelRR 12-14-04, 12:19 PM Yup, bad explanation on my part. Basically, if looking at the black lines on the sides when looking at 4:3 picture, the 5063 black, was "blacker". If this makes any sense!
In other words, the black lines compared to the blacks sides on the 5063 when compared to them next to the 5674 black speaker, appear blacker.
That's the best I can do, not knowing proper technical terms for this.
Thanks!

2. I notice some kind of glossy reflection, which is hard to describe. This is not smudges(I have those also). I am assuming it is some kind of a screen reflective surface that the xx63 models did not have. Has anybody else notice this?
Thanks in advance for any help

Can't say about the black since this is my first DLP and I am impressed overall during the first 5 days of having this set. Monday Nite Football in HD was awesome!!! Now as for the reflective surface smudges or whatever. I noticed what look like shinny (sp?) smudges on the screen but only when I was trying to calibrate with Avia via the DVD and the screen was "that bright skyblue"!! When acutally watching something via the STB or DVD I have not noticed anything.
Sharkey - I had the same problem you describe. No 'Expand" mode offered in the menu. The Sammy seems to like 720p input over 1080i. My Comcast STB came defaulted to 1080i. To correct, turn on the set, turn off the STB, push 'menu' on the STB controller, select 720p output from the onscreen STB menu. Or follow your STB instructions for a 720p output. Then DVI and HDMI inputs on the Sammy will have Expand as choices for picture size. I have only been able to 'Stretch" the picture when inputting an analog signal into the Sammy. Either via S-Video or Component. With these signal connections, selecting 'Standard' mode and Wide will stretch a 4:3 picture to 16:9. The short and wide effect. Conversly, with a DVI connection setting the picture to 4:3 size 'squishes' the picture inward from the sides. Tall and thin effect. I do not know why this is even offered. Leaving the size set to Wide under Expand mode has all pictures shown in their normal size. I haven't found a way to 'stretch' a 4:3 signal to 16:9 with a DVI connection. I have a motorola 6200 STB.

Keep in mind that if you register your product, Samsung gives you an extra three months (including the bulb), for a 15 month manufacturer's warranty.
That plus Amex = 27 months (although I don't know if Amex will cover the bulb). I've considered the Repair Master warranty, but I can't find anyone on the whole forum who's had experience (good or bad) with a claim. And every time I ask TVAuthority about it, I get silence.:(
Anyway to adjust a slight tilt on the picture?

Only with a physical adjustment (eg service call).

I had that before on my 5063. They just replaced my LE.

I just called Samsung and was told it is a service menu adjustment. I have an HL-P4674W BTW.
a1rmann 12-14-04, 03:08 PM Ok...I finally got my sub to work. The receiver reset for some reason and the fronts were set to Large. (quick question on this...do I want the rear Left and Rights to be set to large or small?)
Now...the ever question of picture settings... Cheezmo suggested lowering the brightness to help with the noise on the screen. It seems with the Matrix I get green gnats that I can't get rid of. I don't see it as much from further away but it definetly takes away from the blacks.
There are three preset settings for picture -
Cinema, Standard, and Dynamic
The settings are as follows:
Cinema:
Contrast 90
Brightness 50
Sharpness 50
Color 60
Standard:
Contrast 100
Brightness 50
Sharpness 65
Color 60
Dynamic:
Contrast 100
Brightness 45
Sharpness 75
Color 65
Which is more preferrable or are there a different combination everyone prefers?
Also which Color Tones is everyone selecting?

If you look in the black bars in letter box DVD's does everyone have some noise that flickers when upclose? It seems that the matrix is more green for some reason, where braveheart seems to have different shades of black that flickers.
What does everyone thing?

Speaker question - generally, unless your speakers are full range (down to 25hz or lower), set them to small.
Settings - No one can answer this for you. You should do a user calibration with Avia or DVE. It will depend on a number of factors, including the light characteristics of your room.
The Matrix is intentionally filmed with a greenish tint to it. You should not see anything in the black bars. What do you mean by up close? If it is closer than a comfortable viewing distance, don't worry about it. The sets weren't made to be able to watch from 5 feet away.

Cheezmo -
My only complaint about the 4674 (and a very minor one at that) is that on 2:35.1 material, the black bar on the top is ever so slightly (1/16") lower on the right side of the screen than the left. It's really not a big deal - I don't even think anyone would even notice it but like a lot of other folks here I'm just so anal. If it did start to bug me more, is that a service menu adjustment, Samsung tech. fix under warranty, or is an ISF calibration needed?
Paul_PDX 12-14-04, 03:23 PM About video noise --
Does your DVD player have any settings like my Sony DRC (Digital reality creation) or some other picture enhancing modes. You might want to make sure they are all off since the set will probably do a better job than most non upconverting DVI players. That could add some noise.
Noise in the black areas on DVD only might indicate noise being introduced thru your component cables (are they well shielded, away from other cables as much as you can, not crossing power cables, etc.?)
My black bars have no noise with component.
TJK about tilt issues -- tilt is a mechanical adjust for both DLPs and LCDs since they are rectangular digital panels with a fixed light path, The light engine is mounted with several adjusments points (screws). Lots of Symantec techs answer with stock answers about CRTs when asked questions about DLPs.
Chris Braun 12-14-04, 03:29 PM I picked up my 5674 this weekend. Its still in the box waiting to be installed. As soon as the painters are out of there I'll get it all hooked up and post some pictures.
So to my question. It seems as though there is no discrete code for the HDMI input. I have the HDTIVO and had planned on using the HDMI output. But I must have a discrete code for my MX-700 remote. If I don't find it then I will be forced to use the DVI input on the 5674. Any disadvantage to this approach?

No disadvantage at all. Will just need separate audio cables to get sound out of the TV's speakers. Video performance will be identical.

I just answered the service menu part.
A tech could fix it (although I can't say if they'll cover it or not, probably depends on how bad you say it is).
A calibrator may be able to fix it, just make sure and ask in advance. I haven't done Samsung light box adjustments yet (I tried on a 5085 but other than getting some bad blisters from trying to adjust impossible to reach knobs didn't manage to improve it).

Thanks - I gather from your response that you've seen similar issues (probably much worse than mine) on other DLP's.
If it started to bug me more, or if someone else noticed it, I would hope Samsung would cover it. But to be honest, it's so minor I don't even think it's worth having someone mess around with the inside of the set - I'm afraid it could do more harm than good. Maybe I'll post a picture of a 2:35.1 movie and see if anyone here even notices.
a1rmann 12-14-04, 04:51 PM Gentlemen,
So I called denon about the noise on the blacks and they said they have an update to address this and a green push. I should have the cd in a few days.
Mainly...a DVD in letterbox format, the black bars have a terrible transition into the picture and all of the blacks have this moving noise that doesn't look great. From far away it does lighten up the blacks and the closer you get you can see why. I am normally not picky but this seems to be a little more obvious when watching a DVD. Funny enough...I don't see this on SD. Go figure. I also tried components instead of DVI and it did nothing.
Has anyone else had this problem and what did they do about it. The Denon person began talking about MacroBlocking? Can anyone explain this further and how to fix it?
Thanks in advance!
tjk - You have exactly the same issue as I have. Mine is about 1/8". I went over to the store to look at the floor model and guess what? It was worse then mine. Actually, looking around the store, the only set i saw that didn't have some sort of geometry issue was a Sony 70" LCD.
Cheezmo -
"I tried on a 5085 but other than getting some bad blisters from trying to adjust impossible to reach knobs didn't manage to improve it."
Maybe the 4674 has more room to work.
Cheezmo 12-14-04, 05:02 PM I hope so. I plan on doing this kind of adjustment as part of my calibrations and have access to the service manuals that describe the procedure, its just a matter of getting some experience.

Interesting. While I am (obviously) not an expert on this, perhaps it has something to do with the light engine/lamp being on the bottom left of the screen? TWD - are you going to have a tech look at it? I don't think I will because I appear to be better off than average, according to your research. But if you do have someone look into it, post your experience - I'm interested to see what would be involved.
I'll try to post a picture later.
A1rmann -
You don't see the issue with SD because SD has nothing to do with your DVD player. Apparently the 2910 has a green push issue that is addressed by a firmware update. This is not macroblocking - that is when a section of the picture looks like a collection of boxes (that's a very poor explanation, but my point is the issue you have is not macroblocking). Denon is pretty good about addressing issues through firmwar updates, so you should be fine once you intall.
a1rmann 12-14-04, 06:45 PM Thanks Tjk. I will let you know how it goes after the firmware!
grizzly 12-14-04, 07:29 PM Received 5674 Friday PM. D* came Sat. afternoon w/sammy 360 & new HD antenna and we hooked up the TV and everything was fine. Connection is DVI to DVI. Sunday morning everything was fine. Turned on TV Sunday afternoon and no video. Had 3 blinking lights on front of set. Called Samsung and girl said it was the bulb and gave me a number to call Monday AM. Called and said it could be bulb or ballast and would get info. to repair man. Called repair man to confirm repair and said it could also be lack of 200 & some volts. Now we wait until repair man comes Wed. AM. The way the TV is acting, after turning the set on, is that the audio comes on without the video, and it turns itself off & restarts 2-3 times and on the last time it shuts off and gives you the 3 blinking lights. So sad after all this waiting. Will report back after I know more. Grizz

My 5674's HDMI discrete is working fine for My MX-800. If you download the newest update to the MX-700s Editor the IR database for TV devices, Samsung,Extend Function now has HDMI1 that works.
At least it works with the MX-800 Editor -- if it isn't there in the MX-700 database you might be able to use the MX-800 program to get the code into your MX-700 or I could send you an exported MXF file.
PS -- I posted about the discrete success higher up -- there are still a couple codes not working.

I am not advocating this, but when in a Fry's the other day looking at a Mits, I commented to the salesman about how horizontal banners and legends on the screen had a slight tilt downward from left to right. The salesman said this was because the screen had not been "set" by the installer. I asked what he meant be that and he climbed up on the shelf with the TV, put his hands on each side at the top, and literally (and somewhat violently torqued the chasis. It made a loud crunching sound when he did it. After picking my jaw off of the floor, I looked at the screen and I'll be darned if he didn't straighten it. I can appreciate that he changed the mechanical alignment in the process, but I also appreciate that its much easier to manhandle a set that you haven't put down a bundle for. Still, if anyone decides to try the chiropractic approach to screen alignment on an HLP, I'd be interested in knowing how it went for them.
RCBrust 12-15-04, 08:07 AM I'm using a Denon 1910 DVD player with my 5674. I really like the picture on the 1910 (have even compared it with a Sony NS975) except for the green push in darker scenes. This seems to be a problem with Denon players in general.
The question I have is, by using a calibration disk like Avia and the 5674's service menu, should I be able to adjust out this green push? I've played around with the regular settings and the rest of the colors seem to be off when I try to adjust it out. From reading through all the posts, I haven't been able to conclude whether or not this is something that can be fixed with a calibration.
Thanks,
Randy
Cheezmo 12-15-04, 08:18 AM I don't know about that kind of manhandling, but it would definitely pay to check that it is indeed sitting level and perhaps a shim or two under one corner could twist the chassis just enough to straighten things out. Not much to lose if it works!

I toyed around with the 1910 for a while. I could not find a way to get rid of it. I think you are going to have to except it and attempt to ignore it or try the Sammy 941 or the Panny S97. I switched to the new Sammy 941 and really like it. I've heard really good things about the Panny but have not tried it out.
stuback 12-15-04, 09:15 AM Quick (stupid?) question, as this is my first DLP
On my 4674, if I have a light solid color on the screen, and am standing directly in front of the TV (within a foot), looking down at the screen, there is a definite upside down light triangle, with the point pretty much being in the center of the screen. This cannot be seen when looking at the TV from "normal" viewing locations... Is this a normal artifact of the rear-projection?
Thanks,

Yes, they are designed to be watched from normal viewing positions, not from 1 foot away at an angle. Any RPTV will have strange effects if you get too close or look at various angles at a steep angle due to the various lenses/fresnel screens, etc. used to give a wide viewing angle.
I'm waiting for someone to ask if it is normal for the picture to be upside down if you stand on your head...
will873 12-15-04, 10:14 AM Apologize if this has already been posted or is a known issue for DLPs or the ##74's. Tried a quick search and nothing came up.
When in 4:3 mode, the black bars seem really curved on both sides. Is there a way to fix this, or is this just something I can expect with this TV?
We'll I'm ready to get my DLP this week after 2 years of decision making and waiting on the next best thing, I'm going with the Samsung 74 series. I wanted to get some opinion on the size of TV to go with. Here's my room specs:
16 X 16 room, perfect square in shape. with TV stand and couch it brings the viewing distance to 10.5' from eye's to front of screen comfortably sitting, and on the other L-side of the couch is 9' from eye's to screen. My speakers are small and wall mouted, so that's not an issue of space.
I was planning on going with the 46", but there's that urge to go for the 56" however I am afraid it might be too large for the room (9.5" wider x 6.3" higher) and my viewing distance. I'd like some recomendations from experts and those with similar sets.
My viewing is going to be 50% DirecTV SD, 50% DVD for the next 6 months. then I plan on going HD for all local channels(they are availible now) The locals are all I watch making it 50%HD, 40% DVD, 10% SD in 6 months or so)
Thanks

That is normal. I believe it has something to do with how close the light engine is to the screen due to the slim profile. My technical explanation could be wrong, but it is supposed to be like that and I don't think you can do anything about it.
I watch all my SD in 4:3. This is why I love DLPs. It took me about a day to get used to the slight hourglass shape. I have the 4674. Maybe it is a bit more pronounced on the larger set. Mine is barely noticeable.

Cheezmo and I were just talking about this via email.
I measure mine and am off roughly 1/8 to 3/16" from top to middle the back out the the bottom of the screen. From what I understand this is a fact of life with these units. I am a geometry freak, so it bothers me a bit, but whenever I just starting watching the TV instead of studying it, I find the issue disappears. It is also less noticeable if you zoom 4:3 content, which I do quite often. By the way, the same situation is there during your full screen image, its just harder to discern because the vertical line is not there. Pop on the HDNet pattern or anything else...its there, rather dramatically.
The bottom line is all these types of screens have different advantages and disadvantages. Cheezmo, correct me if I am wrong, but the geometry issues won't go away on a Samsung rear projection DLP. He said his had it too. It cannot be calibrated out.
But I am keeping mine, the picture is just simply stunning (assuming good content...I am amazed how much variability there is in HD broadcasts). Hopefully I'll be able to have Cheezmo out in January to calibrate it.

I have the 4674 and sit about 7.5-8 feet away from it. I think the 56 would have been way too big for my space. I do notice at this distance I can easily see digital compression and artifacting on SD channels over Dish network. I just got Timw Warner Cable and their signal quality is better on digital channels. I do notice that if I stand behind my couch rather than sit on my couch, the PQ looks much better just because of the extra few feet.
However, DVD viewing at my normal viewing distance is INCREDIBLE. I do not have HD yet but I would assume it should be better than DVD and I should be thrilled at my viewing distance.
So SD quality is the drawback for screensize to me. I find it easily watchable just makes you wish for better. Once I get HD, I'm sure my SD watching will drop significantly since I watch a lot of local channels which have mostly HD content now.
Best I can say is go to the store and gadge your distance from the TV and watch each of them at the distances you mentioned. Do bare in mind that larger TV equals worse picture quality until you are dealing with high def signals. But as you mentioned, you watch a lot of locals so in time you will probably mostly be watching HD and DVDs.
I've probably just confused you more than when you started. LOL! And I probably didn't help a bit.
HA HA!
Thanks mchuckp, it all helps! question for you... do you ever lay on the couch or on the floor? how does it look to you with the horizontal viewing angle? and how high is your TV stand? The store has it sitting on the floor now so I can't tell the angle.
Reason I ask is we do a lot of sitting on the floor with the baby.
Thanks

This is not normal. There is a service menu option that can only be accessed by a HIGHLY TRAINED CALIBRATOR that allows the DLP picture to be reversed upside down when you stand on your head. Its in the service menu under 'yoga option'.
Hope this helps.

9' is plenty of room - get the bigger set. Tossing money and space aside, I would always go bigger. If I had room for the 56, I would have gotten it instead of the 46. Bigger is almost always better. The 46 looks perfect from 5-6 feet away.
I also think it's a big mistake to base any part of you decision on SD viewing. This is an HDTV, made for HD. You will (like I'm sure a lot of folks here do) seek out HD content because the picture is so good. If all you are going to watch is SD, stick with a direct view CRT and wait until you have HD equipment.

I'm waiting for someone to ask if it is normal for the picture to be upside down if you stand on your head...
How about... err, yes... when I'm lying on my side, the picture appears about 90 degrees off...
In all seriousness....
I found myself very close to my TV after messing with DVE light color patterns and finding a bunch of dust behind the screen? and/or stuck mirrors?... by a bunch I mean ~5. While I was so close to the screen, I noticed the triangle thing, and since Magnolia will be coming out to look at the TV, I thought I'd attempt to find out if this phenomenon was normal.
Is dust normal on a DLP? Is that something that regular maintenance takes care of?

That cracked me up.:D I love the questions about things looking abnormal from viewing conditions the TV wasn't made for.
It's kind of like going over to the speaker forum and asking...
"I notice when I walk up to my left speaker and put me ear right next to it, my speakers lose their stereo imaging ability. The left speaker now sounds dominant and is very easy to localize, while sound from the right speaker becomes hard to hear. Why is this."
Why? Because your speakers weren't designed to have you sit 1 foot away from the left speaker. Just like your TV wasn't designed to look it's best when you put your face up to it. Not to insult anyone, but whether you see green nats, pixelization, or an outline of the Virgin Mary, who cares. Yet people actually contemplate returing TV's because they dont' do what they were not desiged to do in the first place. What does the TV look like from your couch? If you see a problem then, you've got a real issue. Otherwise, it's just humor.:D

Probably not an issue with the TV, rather the DVD player. Before you give up on it, call Denon and see if there is a firmware upgrade. The 2910 had a similar issue but it was fixed. Denon is pretty good about supporting their DVD players with CD firmware updates.

Thanks for the anecdote - for the 1/16" of an inch my top bar is off, I'll pass on making that loud crunching sound.

This is the number one reason I don't want to get an HDTV. Discovery HD or ESPN HD don't interest me. Heck, ESPN only gets one football game a week on it. So for the HD channels overall, you basically only get primetime tv, nature channels, and sports games. I just don't like the idea of not being able to watch an old episode of the Simpsons or Seinfeld or Friends on an SD channel during dinnertime on a big DLP tv. I will probably hold off longer until more HD channels come around.

Hope this helps.
Actually, although I haven't tried it, there is an option in the service menus that I believe will flip the picture vertically. A holdover for light engines designed for front projectors which may be table or ceiling mounted.
Sorry, I don't think you can rotate it 90 degrees due to the screen being wider than it is high ;)
So far we're about 3 to 1 saying go for the 56" over 46".... Any one else care to share their thoughts? one note, I'm moving up from a 27" Sony XBR crt... so they both will be huge to me! Thanks.

16 X 16 room, perfect square in shape. with TV stand and couch it brings the viewing distance to 10.5' from eye's to front of screen comfortably sitting, and on the other L-side of the couch is 9' from eye's to screen. My speakers are small and wall mouted, so that's not an issue of space.

be proud of your 'Tiny TV', I have a 56 so I can't understand your frustrations :)
As you all know i have a Denon 2910 and a HLP5674. Should i go DVI or HDMI to the TV? I don't need the sound that the HDMI transfers but I am getting a new HD cable box and I think it is DVI.
Also, HDMI cables all the same? Where did everyone get theirs?
I too had a ProScan. So my viewing comes from watching a 36" standard CRT (non-flat screen) to a 56" dLP. Picture quality of SD channels is at least on par with the RCA for analog channels. Digital channels are much better and HD and DVD content is just outstanding. There were nothing but positives going to the DLP. And I'm about 10 feet away for viewing, secondary spots on the room sides are about 8 to 9 feet away. 56" is great and if you have the space I would go larger. I haven't measured as yet but I think the diagonal of a 4:3 SD picture looks to be about 46". Gosh that would mean a 46" SD picture would have been about 36", the same as my old RCA. AARRGG... bigger is better (IMHO)

My TV sits on a typical stand height and I'm not sure exactly what it is. I would a couple feet. If I lay on the couch it looks great. I will also sit on the floor and it is great. I don't think I have watched it laying on the floor. I think when you get too high or low or way too much to the side, it kind of seems like you lose a little bit of the brightness. I think the bulb appears brightest if you are right in front of it. However, don't take this as degraded picture quality. Pretty much anywhere in my room, I think it looks great! I wouldn't hesitate to by the 46 or 56.
Maybe someone else can comment on laying on the floor.

I used DVE and used the standard menus. To me, it is only in dark scenes so it isn't the whole picture all the time. If I tried to turn up the non-green colors it just gave an overall color change. Made my whites look reddish or blueish.
My 1910 came with firmware 1.09. They sent me the disc for 1.10 (latest) and it was not for the green problem. To date, I do not think there is a fix. I haven't read anyone say they have successfully gotten rid of it.
Maybe a professional calibration would help, but by the time you spend that much more, why not by the Denon 2910?

Okay lay off poor Tjk. His is not that big but he knows how to use it--LOL.
I am using HDMI with the 5674 and the video is great. You should search this thread because getting the set to see the DVD player via HDMI can be tricky. Basically after turning on your DVD player use the button on the front of the player to set to HDMI/HDMI. Then your 5674 will see the connection and you can choose it. At least I think I am remembering correctly.
I purchased my Monster HDMI and DVI cable from Ebuyer.com for a "good" price. But Bluejeans makes a great product also and their prices are lower. I purchased the 6 analog cables for playing SACD and DVDa disks from BLuejeans and it is a nice looking and performing cable as far as I can tell. And if you are getting the HD cable box from Comcast yes you will want to connect to your Sammy with DVI.

enjoy

That's exactly what I'm seeing. I also tried to adjust it out but it disrupts the color on brighter scenes. That's the reason I asked about calibrations using the Avia or DVE disks. What I don't know is whether these calibration programs talk you through adjustments using the service menu, or do they just have you use the standard menus. Since the green needs to be lowered on the darker scenes, isn't this what a gamma adjustment is? And isn't that available in the service menu? Anyone?

DVE doesn't cover service menus. Their instructions only cover the basic stuff like contrast, brightness, etc. If you are hooking up through DVI, the gamma function is turned off in the TV. I think there is a gamma function within the 1910 if I remember correctly. I cannot speak about Avia since I've never used it. I guess you could use a lot of the test patterns on DVE for service menu "stuff". I personally don't know anything about service menus. My TV looks great and I love the 4674 and the Sammy 941 and the picture that is generated.
The green in the 1910 is a known problem and there are threads in the DVD PLAYER section of AVS. That may be a better place to seek out answers about this. At this time, I do not believe a firmware exists that fixes this issue. At least, I have not found any mention of it.
Good luck to ya.
a1rmann 12-15-04, 04:47 PM mchuckp,

My 1910 was made in September of 2004 and came with firmware 1.09. I contacted Denon about the newest version that I had existed but no one knew what it corrected. They sent me the disc and it didn't work. I emailed them back to request another one and mentioned the green push and asked them what 1.10 corrected.
This is what they responded:
Hi,
Let's try a new disc. I will send it out today. This update corrects a
problem with the screen width and tray malfunction.
Maybe they are making corrections on the 2910 first since it is a higher end piece of equipment and don't want to piss off their bread and butter customers. I don't think Denon thinks much of the 1910 and just released it just stay have something in the market at the lower end. My guess is that it is on the low end of the Denon totem pole.
Of course, I'm just speculating. I hope you find a way to fix or hope that Denon corrects it for you. If they do fix it, it is a decent player for the price. But for me, to get the Sammy 941 and get rid of the green issue and add HDMI and future use of DVD-A, it was worth it for me to switch out from the Denon. I just want a good solid sub-$300 player to hold me off until a HD type DVD is on the market. Then I will spend much more on a player.
Paul_PDX 12-15-04, 06:15 PM Since this is an owners thread and the owners of the AVS Forum have a policy against quoting prices it would be good if you would keep pricing out of this thread.
Thanks.
I'm not asking for a price quote, as I'm not trying to buy a unit from anyone here, and no one here is offering to sell me a unit. I'm looking to Identify a reasonable price for the unit because Samsung does not regulate their prices and obviously has a massive markup meaning the set's no where near worth what it's MSRP is set at. Where better to ask for this information then in the "Owners Thread" , should I ask the people who just bought JVC's??? it's in the interest of buyer protection, besides, a place like Tweeter is know for being over priced and negotiable.
and I've seen a great deal of pricing information posted all over AVS Forum on other product and after reading all 70 pages of the "Forum Rules" I do not see anywhere stating it's against policy, or where AVS has taken any action for similar requests.
If you don't agree with my post... then read on to the next one.
My question still stands for those who would like to help out a fellow buyer.

The reference to pricing is not currently listed in the forum rules. Since there was a recent "archive" the pricing rule has been placed in an area more difficult to find. This is not your fault but is still a forum rule. Please read the following.

I was just wondering if this was a problem that may have been "fixed" on new sets or if this is just inherent to the xx74 design. Of course, when you stand back far enough you can't see them, but it's hard not to think that all of those little dots don't create some type of problem for the image clarity.

Find the point where you you have trouble seeing them and slowly turn down brightness until they are gone. Then move back to your normal watching distance and enjoy. If you read Cheezmo's contributions to this thread you can learn a lot about improving your picture quality.

Never thought of standing on ones head like that. Kind of like the common expression "head over heals" makes no sense. If my heals were over my head, now that would be something. I guess that only really happens when one tries to stand on their head.

It's perfectly normal. You're not supposed to be watching from a few feet away. And don't take this as an insult, we're just having a little fun, but your timing is pretty funny - read back a couple of pages, we've been having discussions about these sort of "the picture is upside down when I stand on my head" posts.;)

When in 4:3 mode, the black bars seem really curved on both sides. Is there a way to fix this, or is this just something I can expect with this TV?
It's normal. I was in Sears today and saw the same thing on Mits, Sammy, and Panasonic DLPs and a JVC D-ILA. And the horizontal lines in letterbox on my Panasonic CRT aren't perfectly straight either.

Be patient. I'm sure the TV will arrive. There are only so many to go around. I waited for mine since May.

PS -- I posted about the discrete success higher up -- there are still a couple codes not working.
Thanks Paul. I found those codes. So now HDMI is working like charm. However, I can't get discrete on to work for me. Discrete off works fine. I remember reading about this problem over on the remote central boards. Do you have the Discrete "power on" working?
Thanks again,

unconfirmed 12-17-04, 12:12 PM Well, I'm very happy to say that I'm now the proud owner of a 5674w. My order has been processed and should be leaving windy california on its way here sometime later today.
Thanks to everyone here whose input and questions helped me make my decision. I'm sure that I'll be back with questions once it arrives and I begin to set it up.
Hope all of you have a happy holiday season.
Cheers,

I made a macro with "discrete off" , 1/10th sec delay, followed by "toggle ON/OFF".
If it is OFF it turns on. (first off is ignored since it is off toggle on turns it on).
If it is ON it starts the off cycle and then toggle on cancels the off command out so that it doesn't cycle the lamp.
(Samsung has a delay in the off circuit that protects against accidental offs where you hit Power but change your mind and hit power again immediately.
Still looking for SVID 2 and AV 2 and AV3. (currently using macros that only work when they are connected to a device that is on)

mchuckp 12-17-04, 01:33 PM I have not seen this brought up yet to my knowledge:
Does anyone know what the "FILM MODE" ON or OFF does. It gives no description in the manual and I don't think I see the difference.
Thanks.
M3 Pete 12-17-04, 01:37 PM I think I read that you cannot do PIP off of DVI or HDMI input, right?
Can you hook up 2 SD inputs off of one D* STB?
How about one SD DirecTivo and one Hughes HD STB (or HD Tivo)?

"Film Mode" is the feature name for Samsung's 3:2 pulldown. More on 3:2 here:
http://www.dvdfile.com/news/special_report/production_a_z/3_2_pulldown.htm
Paul_PDX 12-17-04, 01:56 PM On 480i material If your are watching material taped with Video Tape instead of Film shutting Film Mode off will allow the Genesys logic to more quickly decide how to process the incoming data and give you a better picture without as long of a delay before scaling.
The only place I see it of use is playing video games as the Genesis will within a few frames decide on its own whether the original material was 24p (film) or 60i (video) and except for rare occassions the end result will be the same to us.
Paul_PDX 12-17-04, 02:00 PM You can be on a DVI source and use PIP in the corner only. side by side PIP doesn't work when you are in DVI/HDMI.
You can't put a DVI/HDMI source in the little PIP window either.
I web surf occassionally with my PC browser on the DVI with my SD Tivo in a small window in the corner (I just resize my browser window narrow enough that the TV window doesn't cover the scroll bars.
You could watch your HD Tivo big with your SD window in the corner at the same time.
You can watch two sd with one in the corner and one big or side by side.

For those of us who are a bit down on the tech curve, can you give us a "when to use" guide? Such as:
For film-based DVDs use Film Mode.
For any other SD source, including films broadcast over satellite, cable or OTA, turn film mode off.
I don't know if that's right. Is it only DVDs contain the 24 fps film material? What about digital SD transmissions of films? (any difference between satellite, cable or OTA?) In simpler terms, if I'm watching a film from SD satellite, is it coming in as 29.97 fps or 24 fps?
Paul_PDX 12-17-04, 02:46 PM I have read some sites that suggest even over the air viewing of 24p material can benefit from Genesis processing because somewhere along the line 3:2 pullup is involved in getting the data interlaced from films P24 for NTSC 480i/60.
I have never known the real answer for Satellite or Digital Cable . Compression could alter the ability to properly detect the cadence of the video so they might missing when to correct the image.
I know with DirecTV they compress the subscription and pay movie channels less so maybe it will still help some of the time. Either way the Faroujda will auto detect when it can (as long as it is not off) so I don't think it hurts much to leave it on.

I'll give this a try. I wonder why the 74 series does not support the discrete On. Wonder if this has something to do with the quicker boot times on this TV over the previous generations.

And in the context of a dummy friendly Remote like a Harmony does this mean that the one touch button for say watching TV on this remote will not work properly with my new 74 and I will have to turn on my set with its own remote!!??

Discrete code is the name for sending a signal to the TV to perform a "Discrete" operation. Discrete ON will turn the TV on when the TV is off. But will not do anything if the TV is on. As opposed to the "power" button on the factory remote which will simply toggle the TVs current state. On if off and vice versa. Discretes allow us to customize our macros without having to worry about the current state of the TV and other components.

I am not having much luck with this. I tried 0, .1, and, .2 sec delays between discrete off and toggle power and the TV just doesn't stay when the starting state of the TV was on.
Do you have the 46 or 56? When did you get your TV?

mismatched 12-17-04, 06:43 PM I have heard from several people including one on the local Comcast forum that the 600 series Harmony remotes are very wife-friendly. I have researched the Harmony's including talking to Mike at Surfremotecontrol.com and felt that for friendliness and button layout that the new 680 was a good choice especially with a Tivo or Tivo like unit. I really want someone or something to do most of the programming. And although a Pronto or similar are awesome they are big bucks and require patience!
there is a thread in Remote portion of forum for harmony remotes and also check this site out:

Chris Braun 12-17-04, 06:46 PM I had the same problem with the Pronto. My wife hated it. I bought the MX-700 for my new media room and have a preliminary .MXF for it. Paul_PDX 12-17-04, 07:35 PM Chris --
I have a 5674 got it Thanksgiving Saturday.
My remote always adds one tenth of a sec between macro steps so my macro is actually "Discrete OFF", Toggle ON. I don't even see the screen blink when it runs if it is on already. I do see the remote blinking indicaor when it gets the infrared though. I can actually do the steps manually and see the set go off and then right back on without waiting for a power cycle..
Edited: Just saw that you have a MX-700 I could export you a file with my codes to try (I have the MX-800.)

bobbyjayj 12-17-04, 10:13 PM All - I want to thank a great many of your for all your help these past several months, especially htwaits, tjk, cheezmo, etc (been lurking since spring). You helped us decide to purchase a Samsung hlp4674. We brought the set home yesterday. Been slowly setting it up - NEED HELP. Had DirectTV in today to install a RCA Directv DTC210 HD receiver. We have surround sound on DVD but not on the TV.
Equipment -
Samsung 4674 TV
RCA DirecTV DTC210 HD Sat Receiver
Harmon Hardon AVR 125 Audio Receiver
H/K is hooked up optical to DVD (great surround sound)
TV is hooked up DVI to sat receiver
Running optical from Sat receiver to H/K and getting no sound from H/K but getting sound from TV.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Chris Braun 12-17-04, 10:20 PM I don't know much about the HK, but with my denon you have to assign each digital input to a source input. If this is already done, then you might look into the RCA receiver setup. You may have to explicitly enable the optical out.
Chris
bobbyjayj 12-17-04, 10:29 PM Very novice here. The HK manual doesn't explain how to assign. The old RCA sat receiver was automatically assigned to Video 2. Not assigning with new receiver. How do you enable the optical out??
Chris Braun 12-17-04, 10:50 PM Your HK manual should tell you how to assign the opticall input. I just looked at the manual from HKs site and it does so on page 22.
http://manuals.harman.com/HK/Owner%27s%20Manual/AVR%20125%20OM%20FINAL%20(Rev.%204-3-02).pdf
I am not familiar with the RCA receiver. So I can't help you there.

karmine 12-18-04, 11:11 AM Thanks, all, for the info on the HLP4674.
Questions:
1. Anyone's opinion as to cost/benefit over HLP4663? Like a $600 difference.
2. I have a room with bright daylight. Any glare issues (my CRT unwatchable during the day without blackout screens)?
Thanks again!
Ok, so I just swapped by 4674 out and got a new one. With the installer still at my place, I put the TV on an HD channel and found a nearly all-white scene. I went up to the TV with the installer and found a half-dozen places on the TV that weren't white (most were black spots). The installer said that some of these could be dirt/dust stuck under the screen and to use a can of air to get them out. Is this typical on these TVs? I know people don't watch them up close like that, but should every single millimeter of the screen be white on an all-white scene?
I'm starting to think I'm asking too much of these TVs, but it seems reasonable to me to not have any off-color spots on a new TV that costs $X000. Has anyone else actually looked closely at the TV to see if their TV has similar dirt/artifacts? Should I just ignore them if I can't see them from ten feet away? I know I'm a perfectionist so I want to know if I'm being unreasonable here. :)

1. Installer/delivery people are not technicians.
2. If the dark spots are the exact size of the pixel grid elements then you have stuck mirrors and should get a new light engine or a new TV.
3. If the dark spots are not exactly inside the pixel grid then the screen needs cleaning. I wouldn't recommend compressed air because it would just stir up new dirt. Your dealer or Samsung should take care of cleaning the screen.
Chris Braun 12-18-04, 07:23 PM I finally got the discrete off/toggle power workaround to work. I had the melody set to on (plays a stupid tune when the tv powers up and down). I flipped this to off and the workaround now works.
I still wish Samsung would provide a discrete on for this set. But with the workaround working I'm much happier.
Hi Deaf 12-18-04, 07:46 PM If I turn DNIe on (on an S-Vid input), it turns the DNIe on, on all the inputs and vice versa. Is this normal?
bobbyjayj 12-19-04, 11:28 AM Chris - The H/K finally works. The remote control was not allowing us to assign - had to manually do it from the front of the unit.
Appreciate all the help. :)
Hi guys, i'm calbrating this set with my sencore gear and i'm having trouble figuring out which inputs in the service menu effect the color decoder. Specifically i'm trying to get red correct. I've played with a lot of functions but nothing seems to effect it.
Also, i get a perfect white balance on this set out of the box, i've never seen this before.
Any thoughts?

That's what I see as well. I've tried to set it on ANT1 which I use just for regular analog broadcasts, but it carries over to all inputs. So I would conclude that it's a global setting and normal.
mismatched 12-19-04, 01:36 PM Minor problem but curious:
several times now when in the morning I turn on my 5647 to watch TV via Comcast cable (6412 Moto HD PVR) the picture shows up as a split image, about 2/3 left side and the other 1/3 on the right, with a bar down the middle. When I switch channels it goes away. What the heck?? no other issues with this set at all it is great. Perhaps the split screen problem is a source issue and not the Sammy??? I have in all honesty noticed this when the set was on an HD channel.
anyone have a clue? anyone care?

If I had to bet I would wager that its the Motorola box and not the Sammy. You might try calling comcast on this, but they probably won't be much help.

Now, now...:D Actually, I've seen this twice, both times when I had a moto 6200. As you state, it goes away with a channel change. I doubt it's the actual source or the TV, but maybe how the STB is initially hooking up with the TV. (I do care, but I basically don't have a clue, either...).

If it continues, I would first call your cable teck support and find someone who has a clue. Maybe switch out the box for a new one. I would put my money on the HD box and not the TV. Remember these boxes aren't the cream of the crop and they get handed around to other customers. I've been with Time Warner for cable and internet. My first cable modem was crap and I had to get another one. I just got a DVR from them and the audio skips if I pause it and start playing again. I need to exchange it out.
Point is: get new equipment from them as needed. You pay good money for their service and you should expect equipment that works.
Biocruiser 12-19-04, 05:45 PM I have seen the same problem, about 10 times. I have a Moto 6412 STB and an HLP5685, connected via DVI. It goes away if you change channels or even if you just hit the guide button. It only happens when you first turn on the TV. I leave my box on all the time. I also think it has something to do with the way the TV acquires the signal from the box when you first turn on the TV.
I might try a new box, but they aren't easy to get in my area.
mismatched 12-19-04, 05:58 PM hmm only difference between your setup and mine is the 85 vs 74. I think I will just live with it for now. Comcast in our area is "threatening" to change their STBs to Digios in the not too distant future anyway
thanks

Regarding the pixels, it's hard to say. One of them looks like it could be a stuck mirror, the others are probably dirt, but there's definitely at least six or seven such spots on the screen.
Also, since I just got this set as a replacement for the last one, I've noticed the bow on the right side of the screen is pretty bad (at least 1/4 inch in the middle) but it doesn't completely come back at the bottom. So the bottom is further in than the top so the whole line looks a little slanted. Odd.
Anyway, as I've swapped out my TV already from Magnolia (since they didn't send a tech out the first time), they don't really want to help me much anymore. I can call for a tech to come out, which I'll do, but other than that, they are ready to just give me a refund as they fail to believe anything was wrong with the TV's I swapped out (they didn't inspect the first one when they swapped it).

It appears that this is a common problem from all the posts I've seen. I've seen this a few times as well - both with my old 6200 & the 6412 I just upgraded to. Doesn't seem to be anything serious since it goes away every time by just executing another command (change channels, show guide, etc...). So unless it persists, I'm not worrying about it, but I am glad to have seen these other posts - at least I know it's not just me & am reassured that it's no big deal...
BTW, I have a Motorola 6412 from Comcast connected to a 4674 via DVI.

Agreed!! The PQ is so good, this minor annoyance is really no big deal. I'm VERY happy with this set! I had a 5063 before this & traded it in for the 4674. The 50" was just a little big for my space & after much viewing in the store, my wife & I agreed that the xx74 series sets are so much sharper, clearer & had more vivid colors. These improvements more than made up for the smaller screen size, IMHO.
Enjoy the game - unfortunately I can't watch mine for a few days - having some new flooring installed & the TV is under wraps in the garage until Wed. or Thurs...

Stuart
So, I haven't heard any responses...
I have ~5 dust/stuck mirrors... Is this common for a DLP? I'm very happy with it otherwise... anybody?

Mine's about the same. Supposedly it's uncommon which is part of the reason I swapped out my other 4674, but after seeing a couple sets up close, it now looks commonplace to me. I'd guess most people just don't notice. I do plan on calling a tech out sometime to check it out though since dusting/cleaning is covered in the warranty.

Anyone know how to adjust red in the color decoder in the service menu? If anyone can help me out i'm happy to post my final calibrated findings.
Thanks,
Daniel
Cheezmo 12-20-04, 11:15 AM It depends on the input/scan rate and perhaps your firmware revision so there is no easy answer.
At leat for DVI/HDMI, MATR_XX paramaters in the DNiE menu usually affect color decoding.

Questions:
1. Anyone's opinion as to cost/benefit over HLP4663? Like a $600 difference.
2. I have a room with bright daylight. Any glare issues (my CRT unwatchable during the day without blackout screens)?
Thanks again!
I'll answer in reverse order:
2. The screen is fantastic. I also had a CRT next to a set of glass double doors. Very bright room, TV was almost unwatchable during the day. I get no reflection at all on the 4674. I can even watch with all the lights on at night and not see any glare.
1. IMHO, it's worth the $600. In addition to the HD2+ chip, I love the form factor. But all that aside, it's really the chip that makes this set. It's far sharper, with a much higher CR. It depends on your viewing habits. If you watch any sports at all, it's worth the $600 difference and more. Again, just my opinion, but I'm sure you'll find others here who agree. The HD3 is a smaller, budget oriented chip.

I have to agree. I watched the 4663 and the 5085 in stores A LOT. The 63 looks great but the HD2+ chip is sharper. After comparing them then checking out the 4674 next to the 5085 and could not tell the difference, I picked up the 4674.
Now, it does boil down to your finances. There are some really good prices out there for the 63 series. But if you think you can swing the added cost or could hold off on buying one for a few months and save some more to get it, I think you would be happier in the end.
Either way, both TVs are sweet but if you are anal about PQ, get the 74 series. Someone, who is not as anal (like my wife) probably would say there is no difference. But she doesn't know what the hell she is talking about. She thinks standard TV and DVDs look the same. Interesting how differently minds can work.
Paul_PDX 12-20-04, 12:01 PM I see this when my PC reboots while hooked to DVI -- everything before the logon screen -- booting, loading Windows parts are in 2/3 1/3 mode with screen all shifted about. If I hit the Info button to see what resolution the TV thinks it is in it says 1280x719 at 59.9hz. When I hit the logon screen and everything straightens out the set says it is at 1280x720@60hz like you would expect. I don't see this problem at all when I boot up hooked to VGA so I think maybe my PC is misidentifying the sets available resolutions when it first starts. Maybe the Motorola does the same for the same reason (probably something wrong coming down the DVI cable right after power cycles).
Paul_PDX 12-20-04, 12:04 PM Well this weekend my set developed a stuck mirror/pixel. Bright blue spot permanantly on about 6' down and 14" over from the top right corner. I've had the set for 22 days so its time to start the exchange process.
We both noticed the pixel at the same time and we both are positive it wasn't there before so the dreaded thought that these things can happen after manufacturing appears to be true.
Cheezmo 12-20-04, 12:14 PM Curious how a stuck pixel would create a blue spot. I mean if it was stuck, it would be white, right? For it to only be "on" when the blue color wheel segment is in front of it is quite a trick. Or, perhaps your grayscale is really blue, so the white just looks that way. I know you are just telling us what you are seeing but it seems very strange to me for it to be blue.
I guess perhaps full on for all 3 colors the blue is stronger, much like as the red gives out first when raising contrast, perhaps blue is the last to "give out".
Paul_PDX 12-20-04, 12:34 PM Steve-
I spent some time trying to figure out how a stuck mirror would have one color myself. It may be an optical illusion but the pixel only seems to disappear completely only when on a blue background. I may have stared at it too much. On a solid white, green, red or black background it stays very visible.
It is extremely annoying to watch b&w material and dark scenes while it sits shining away up there now.
I'll let you all know how well Magnolia does with the swapout.

In my meager experience stuck mirrors have produced either white or black for "stuck on" or "stuck off". The only one that I have ever seen in person was stuck off.
I wonder what the blue spot would look like if the image was pure white.

mismatched 12-20-04, 05:17 PM General "rainbow" ?:
OK I now have seen what I believe are the rainbows referred to previously in this thread and others. When one looks away from (or back to) the screen quickly, for example to take a spoonful of ice cream (LOL), you briefly see the primary rainbow colors. I get the impression they are most visible when watching HD broadcasts or a DVD movie. Are these the infamous rainbows? And if so besides not eating ice cream what can be done to minimize their "exisitence"???
thanks

Cheezmo 12-20-04, 06:58 PM That is the infamous rainbows. Just don't move your eyes around too much. Sitting farther back, and relaxing helps as do mild sedatives ;).

Ditto. I finally was able this past weekend to compare the 74 and 85 with a 63 between them. I couldn't see a difference between the 74 and 85 but they were much sharper than the 63.

subwoofer 12-20-04, 10:36 PM Hey guys, I don't feel like starting a new thread, but since this is related to big screen tvs, I figured I would post it here:
Can someone exactly explain what halos are?
Here are two webpages explaining them but I'm not seeing it from the pictures. I can see the second link with the halos in the Star Wars DVD but I can't imagine that being a huge problem.
http://www.caseserve.com/ht/Edge_Enhancement.htm
http://www.videophile.info/Review/TPM/TPM_01.htm
Cheezmo 12-20-04, 11:35 PM Edge enhancement is usually not what people are talking about when they refer to halos on RPTVs. The "halo" problem is when you have a small bright object on a black background (such as the moon on a dark sky) and there is an "arc" of light surrounding it (or often on the other side of the screen). It is typically caused by reflections inside the lens assemblies.

Is it also normal for one side of the set to be more curved than the other? The right side of my set on 4:3 shows is more bowed than the left side and the bottom of the right side-bar never quite makes it back to where the top right side-bar started. So, the bottom of the black bar is 1/16th of an inch different just looking at the top to bottom and about 1/4 inch in the middle. Just seeing if this is normal...

tenderfoot 12-21-04, 09:26 AM A stuck mirror/pixel should be extremely rare on a new DLP, which is why I had mine replaced for a single stuck mirror in the corner of the picture. I am very happy I did also - the new set is flawless.
bobbyjayj 12-21-04, 10:09 AM We've had the 4674 since Thursday night. I must agree with others, SD is improving over time. Watched a 1965 era Western on Saturday in HD and it was awesome. Watched Tombstone Sunday in HD - again awesome.
I'm hearing fan noise or color wheel noise while watching the TV. I sit 12 feet away. It's not bad, but was wondering if I should hear it sitting this far away. The other half sits 8 feet away and can hear the noise but not as much. It is slightly annoying. I've read a few posts where people can hear a fan noise but only up close. It sounds like I've got my Micron computer on in the room is the best way to describe the noise. Any thoughts??
Side note: We bought the TV at Magnolia and they price matched a local internet site. Four days later we saw the internet site was offering $100 off coupon and they honored that, after the fact. They also price match for 60 days.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts, help, etc.

I have a 5674, after some adjustments I have been enjoying the T.v. for about 4 weeks now w/ no complaints. I have read on this site about people talking about clay faces, and had no idea what they were referring to. Last night I was watching the NBA in HD and I now know what people are talking about. With the HLN sets changing gamma to zero is supposed to help. Since you have a variation of the same light engine it might be worth a try.
There are probably other things you can do but the only other thing I know about is to get an ISF calibration.
Of course it would be irritating to discover that it was the input signal and not the TV causing the clay faces.
Thanks htwaits, I was planning on the calibration after I put more hours on the T.V. Maybe I should just monitor this for a while to see if it continues.

I noticed this as well on INHD that was showing an NBA game last night. I have Time Warner in Cincinnati. All other channels looked great so I assumed it was the live feed from INHD. So I wasn't really concerned that something was off on my TV since I could go up one channel to HD Discovery Theater and see perfect faces on Trading Spaces.
Unless someone knows otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it. I've only had HD for about 4 days now and have had the TV for about a month. I was wondering if this is fairly common on live feeds or if there was an issue last night.

One of the most significant things I have noticed about HD broadcasts is how variable their quality is. I would never make a judgement of the TV by a certain broadcast or channel. As an aside TNT sometimes looks awful.
mismatched 12-21-04, 07:17 PM I agree that the broadcasts vary from station to station and even the particular content on a given station. the best you can do is calibrate yourself using Avia or DVE or get the pros on it!

Going OT here, aside from the clay faces, how does NBA-HD look? I wish Adelphia here in LA had it, but all they offer is NBA League Pass, which is a total rip-off. I was told by the Adelphia rep that NBA-HD would be included in the package, but it wasn't. So that being the case, along with the black-outs and poor PQ, I cancelled it about 30 min. after they turned it on.

The only time I have ever heard any noise is when I turn it on. But, mine is in an enclosed cabinet which may mask the noise. Is your out in the open? It could be that it is reflecting off the wall. Can you hear it as well if you move side to side or backwards and forwards a bit? Just ruling out you being in that perfect little spot to hear it.

Yes I do hear it at different viewing areas in the living room. We are going back to Magnolia tomorrow and they are going to let me listen to the sets in there again. We may end up trading out the set. They are very willing to make us happy (costs us a 90 mile trip one way to get there). We hate to do that since we have no problems with this one other than the fan noise. I was just wondering if others had noise issues. I remember reading in other posts about fan noise in the older sets.
We are very pleased with the set and RCA D* HD receiver. Still figuring things out.

What's tough is figuring out how good your hearing is. I've lived with two HLP5063 sets and I never heard anything from the first one (May build), but I do hear a vary small startup sound at ten feet from the one we had delivered last week (October build).
I can also hear the "fans/wheel" from a foot or two from each corner (down low) of the new set. By the time you are my age (71 ) you may not be bothered by fan noise either. ;)
Good luck.

The copyright protection (HDCP) flags are turned on or off by the media provider.
Your STB will act to protect the flagged media from being copied in HD. Your TV because it is HDCP enabled will display the program as broadcast.
It sounds like the recording portion of your STB may have refused to record the program in HD so you wound up with a 4x3 SD image. A program that doesn't have the flags set should record in 16x9 HD.
I'm just speculating. It sounds like the worst case scenario of ways the media industry might use HDCP.
mismatched 12-22-04, 04:47 PM I will make if a point to record portions of several HD (wide screen) broadcasts and test the playback

I notice this more on channels with poor video quality. For example, sometimes the NBA games on ESPN HD are not really being shown in HD--it is actually an SD signal that is being shown over their HD feed. If you saw the "HD" logos on the sides of the screen while watching it then it was probably just an SD feed. Anyway, that's about the only time I've seen "clay faces" on my 4674W. I haven't seen it at all on any real HD feeds and only rarely on my comcast SD. I must say that the xx74w's look much better than the HLN model I tried out last year. The picture is very sharp.

I can hear the fan on ours from about 10 feet away, but the sound has to be turned down very low. The fan is pretty quiet so I don't notice it unless it's late at night and I've got the TV down low. Also, I noticed with my 4674W that the color wheel is much quieter than it was on an HLN model set I tried out last year. Someone mentioned they are no longer using ball-bearing color wheels that made a lot of noise on the previous sets, but I'm not positive. Anyway, my set seems quieter to me than the old model--but yes, I can hear the fan.
mjwagner 12-23-04, 09:51 AM Received my HLP5674W on Tuesday. A couple of observations after three days:
Viewing HD content is absolutely stunning! Frankly I think this set has the best HD picture quality of anything that I have seen. I have not noticed any "clay face" or rainbow effect.
Viewing SD content is much less impressive. I was previously using a Toshiba TP55H60 ( 55" standard rear projection ) and I think SD content looked better on that set. I have tried lots of different settings on the Sammy to improve the SD picture but have not really found a combination that is satisfying. Anyone else having a similar experience with SD content on this set?
All content is digital thru my DirecTV TiVo HR10-250 connected thru the HDMI port set to 720p.
mismatched 12-23-04, 12:24 PM Mark
Give the set a 50-100 hrs for the SD improvement that is either real or perceived. Also calibrating with DVE can help you out. And remember that once you see an HD broadcast and switch SD will look like #$%#$%^& not matter what set you are using! Try different output from teh Tivo also if possible, like 720i...
patience (that is you got to wait until everything is in HD. :-)
mismatched 12-23-04, 12:33 PM Have had my 5674 for a couple weeks. coupled via HDMI to a Denon DVD2910. Have the 2910 set to Normal black output and IRE to 0 as most but not all in other forums recommend.
So I ran Avia last night, Chapter 7 video stuff. How much will the IRE setting on the DVD player affect the calibration? Should I recalibrate with IRE 7.5 and see where things end up.
If I recall correctly ny settings at the end were: Contrast ~88, Brightness ~60, Color ~50 and Sharpness I left at 63. Does this seem in the ballpark?
I could not adjust the tint which I believe is normal but I cannot recall why...
Also adjusting the Sharpness did not seem to do much.
And when the Avia disk says to adjust Whiteness I deduced it meant Contrast for the Sammy. Hope this was correct.
So on to DVE and hopefully I will do and understand better!!
so any remedial advice would be appreciated. I apologize to any that I have also PM'd on this issue but given the time of year I do not know how many will be "On Forum"!

VladDracul 12-23-04, 02:59 PM Using DVE I ended up with brightness at 32. I connected my 2910 via DVI.

And I thought mine was low -- 38 via HDMI to a 5063. Sometimes when I would see brightness settings quoted over 50 or 55, I started to wonder if I was doing something wrong in the calibration. This is at Normal/7.5 IRE, as recommended. If I were to use the 0 IRE setting (which theoretically, I'm told, should have no bearing on HDMI/DVI connections), it does darken the image and I need to up the brightness to ~48 to compensate. Actually that setting is more in line with what I have for HD broadcast, which I calibrate by getting rid of all noise in black bars (that's another discussion, I guess...;) ).
scpanel 12-23-04, 07:32 PM I have contrast at 35 and brightness at 43 with the 2910 via HDMI. Anything higher contrast wise is just too bright even with a 6500K Ideal Lume light on the back of the set in a dark room. For Daytime viewing I have standard at 50/41 and Dynamic at 70/40.
bruce73 12-23-04, 07:43 PM Setting contrast has always been problematic for me, because at no point, even at 100, do I see any white crush using DVE (assuming I know what I'm looking for... ). And this is with the step diagram somewhere in Chapter 12, I think. So I turn it down to 90, only because I don't want it at full throttle (don't ask me why...). This is on Standard and Cinema.
mismatched 12-23-04, 07:50 PM Wow seems like Bruce73 and I are on similar settings but you other guys are out to lunch Wink Wink. or bruce and I dont know what we are looking for)
Hmmm I guess it is a matter of taste and whether I am did the Avia correctly which I doubt. I will have to try the DVE disk as soon as my son and his buddies get done playing Halo 2 (in a week or so-LOL)
You know it is funny watching a show on Discovery HD via Comcast and the colors seem spot on there is detail, like seeing individual hairs on the grizzly bear etc. so I cant be far off at least for my tastes....

I'm glad you threw in that part, because, speaking for myself, that could very well be it. :D
Interesting you mention Discovery HD. It just became available here in LA with Adelphia, and I think for the first time I truly understand what HD is all about and what an amazing picture this Samsung DLP can deliver. And, I agree: I can't imagine it looking any better ("Sunrise Earth" is phenomenal).
mismatched 12-23-04, 08:11 PM Another item of interest is that I can swear (even though I shouldn't) that a very senior member of this forum stated that the 2910 should be set at Normal black and IRE of 0 and not at the factory default of 7.5. I probably read this on the 2910 forum.
PS how do you put the icons exactly where you want them in the message? (Yeah and I am trying to calibrate a $4000 TV!!!)...
bruce73 12-23-04, 08:32 PM mismatched:
What icons? I don't see any icons.
I've read a lot of conflicting theories/impressions/statements about how to set the black level. I've attached a copy of a post written by Guy Kuo, the principal author of AVIA, about black levels that I acquired on one of these forums (if you find the Denon manual daunting, this might send you over the edge, but stick with it...). I keep reading it over and over, hoping it will eventually sink in.

This may be slightly OT, but I was watching "Lost" in HD the other day on my 4674 and I couldn't help but notice that, in several still scenes, there was an extreme amount of graininess in the clouds in the background. It looked worse than an SD channel for me, but only in the clouds. Everywhere else looked pretty good for the whole show and only some of the scenes had this graininess. Now, I don't know much about HD, but I thought this wasn't really possible with HD? Was it simply recorded poorly and then broadcast poorly? Is there any chance it could be the TV? I just thought I'd mention it because everyone always tell me how great HDTV is and I see stuff like this more often than I'd like that makes me think otherwise. :)

HD channels don't always carry the highest quality signal ( due to compression, etc). You will find variations in the quality of HD broadcast depending on the content and the carrier. Discovery channel seems to have the best quality the majority of time and is a good place to compare. But if it runs a low quality content show it to will look less than optimal on its HD channel.
So after all of that what I am trying to say was that what you saw was more likely related to the broadcast rather than your TV.
Anyone seeing "sparkles" on there HLPXX74 sets? I first noticed them during the rolling credits against the black background. I also noticed a few during movies in dark scenes. They look little specks of white; probably mirrors turning on. I don't remember ever seeing them on my HLN set.
I am connected with an Directv HD DVR via the HDMI port.
mismatched 12-25-04, 03:18 PM I am connected DVI to Comcast cable via a Moto HD STB and HDMI to Denon DVD 2910 and have not noticed sparkles on black background, e.g. Discovery HD shots of Mars with black space and stars in background or any other time that I noticed.
Frostykev 12-25-04, 11:51 PM Aright, hopefully this is an isolated incident. Bought the 4674 1 week ago (btw, the HLN467 lasted 7 days last February)
The problem, it has frozen 3 times now. 2 times the color gets grainy, like your watching it in 16 or less colors, very distorted and digitized. When it does this the remote stops communicating with the TV, power off doesn't work, even the buttons on the side.
The other time, the set just stopped showing video, again no remote or side controls.
The remote does make one of the lights on the front flash, indicating the a remote is sending something.
When I power cycle the system, it goes back to working condition. What gives, do I have a lemon? Has anyone else seen this, on either the 46" 56" or the 63 series?
Thanks

A while back, several HLN owners reported sparkles after using cheap cables.
SoftwireEngineer 12-26-04, 10:04 PM I would like to hear from people who have compared the X74 series with the Mitsubishi xx725 series. Looks like the picture on the Mits has a little bit more depth, but it could be an illusion created by the protective screen (I know about the glare issues with it). I am now leaning towards the Samsung, because the 'whites' seem to be better and the picture sharpness is a little better. The shadow detail is also better with the Samsung. Even subjective reasons, why you did not go with the Mits is highly appreciated.

I had the 5674W for two days before exchanging it for a Mits 52825. Although the Mits sets are not without their own problems, the picture quality far surpasses the Sammy with or without the Diamond Shield in place.
I also use the DirecTV HD Tivo unit via HDMI and experienced the "sparkles" right away on HD channels. They appeared like you might see on an "old fashioned" movie and were sporadic in nature.
I have no idea what caused the problem, but it may be related to the HR10-250 considering that we both use it via HDMI.
Ok, I know DLP's are supposedly immune to burn-in, but I often see what looks like burn-in when watching TV. For example, I'll watch a commercial, the screen will go black, and I'll still see artifacts from that commercial on black portions of the screen for a good 20-30 seconds afterwards, or until something displays and covers it up. Is this normal? I assume it's fine, but I thought I'd ask.
htwaits 12-27-04, 02:02 AM Burn-in is permanent. What ever you are seeing it's not burn-in.
Cheezmo 12-27-04, 08:59 AM What you are describing sounds like "image persistence" which is something you see on plasma displays. There is no way you should see it on a DLP set. Something strange is going on.

There are some known issues with the HR10-250. I did some reading on the TIVO forums, and to date, the HDMI output is just plain unreliable. Until there is a fix, I am running component cables out of my HR10-250

While I agree that the HR10-250 early production models did present HDMI failures and defects, later production units (I swapped out two of them) seem to have corrected the problem.
Just by way of quick note, I utilize the HDMI connection on my Mits 52825 (and have on another set as well) without any problems whatsoever.
The "sparkle" problem was unique to the 5674W.

I initially narrowed down my choices to the Mits 725 vs the Samsung XX63 and was ready to jump for the Mits. however the glare in the shield bothered me and I hesitated. Then I heard about the upcoming 74 series of Sammy's and will not look back. The picture is awesome. The glare is nonexistent and the acid test... My wife says that it is unbelieveable and worth every cent. I did see the 825 Mits but did not want to get involved with a built in PVR. Kinda like TVs with built in VHS. Yuk.
I am impressed with the blacks and the whites. Especially watching the older movie "Alien" which is a dark picture. It was visually satisfying and detail was fine.
I agreee with you that the whites are white! And Monday Nite Football is FOOTBALL up close and in your face!!
Don't get me wrong the Mits 725 is a nice set. too bad they dont make it with the true nonglare screen.
Go look at them somewhere side by side if possible. Much of these fine discriminations between sets with similar insides is personal taste. I am totally pleased with my 5674 and it's small footprint.
good luck

IMHO, I have no doubt it is content related. I have seen these artifacts a few times - the most noticiable was Showtime HD's showing of Pulp Fiction, when I saw what appeared to be white sparkles in the black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. It's not much different from the artifacts you often see on the screen at a movie theater.
But for the most part, these sparkles are non-existent, so it is apparent to me that it is a source issue.

You must be one of the lucky ones then. My HR10-250 is only 3 weeks old, and I am on my second unit. If you read the TIVO forums here, it appears that HDMI performance still has many issues, and a reliable fix is not yet available. It works to varying degrees on some, not at all on others. My current HR10-250 initially was able to produce a HDMI output (had sparkles), and now does not produce any HDMI output.
I will wait a couple of months, then try a couple of more to see if I can get my hands on a good one, however I get good performance out of the component outputs, so it’s not a big issue with me at this time.

We checked this one over well with solid black, solid white, and solid colored screens genereated by PC over DVI to verify there are no stuck or dead pixels this time to start with.
I am back to scratch with the color seeming a bit to hot out of the box so I get to spend a few days waiting on the bulb to get conditioned to that point where it was before.

I got my HDTIVO a couple of weeks ago and am experiencing no problems with the HDMI output. It looks great. (Knocking on wood and keeping my fingers crossed) A friend of mine also got the HDTIVO, recently, and his HDMI output works great too. Maybe this is an indication that they have resolved the problems on the latest units. I hope you get your issues with the HDMI output resolved. I think its a jump in performance ahead of the component outs (I have the 5674).

That's good news. The two I tried were also in the last couple of weeks, so it appears that there are still some bad ones in the system. I should get my 5674 in two weeks, after that point I will wait a bit so that my chances of getting a good TIVO will hopefully improve (if they have indeed fixed the HDMI problem). Replacing the TIVO is a PIA due to re-programming all of my preferred shows, and loosing the saved items. I would like to do it only once.

Out of curiousity, how closely did you look at the TV when it was in solid white? Did you look from a normal viewing distance, a couple of feet away, or a few inches away? My TV looks ok from a normal viewing distance, but if I put it on a white screen and look at it right up close, I can see several non-white spots on the screen.

In other words, is it smooth, or look like a computer with 16 colors?
You could also call it a Halo too I guess. So, please tell me that there is no Halo or banding seen in this part of Finding Nemo.

Nemo is famous for it's banding and the angler fish scene is one of the examples. The only set (DLP/LCoS/LCD RPTV) that I've checked for "Nemo" banding and not found it was a HLN507. It's also the only ISF calibrated set that I've ever had a chance to see.
What ever was done toi transfer Nemo to DVD brings out the worst kind of banding. Some sets are better than others but it's always there. I was able to see faint banding in Nemo on the ISF calibrated set but I would have never found it if I hadn't known just what to look for.
A better test would be films on DVD like
"The Fifth Element" -- the opening and the reconstruction chapters,
"Gladiator" -- opening battle,
or "Lawrance of Arabia" -- chapter six.

Fairs, fair...so I gotta say that after telling me my 4674 would be late, I received a second call to say it would arrive only ONE DAY later. I really don't know what TVA did, but the box has Southwest Airlines stickers on it when SEKO delivered it. Kudo's to TVA.

Can anyone here tell me if the Samsung HL-P5674W has a menu option to allow you to choose between SD REC.601 and HD REC.709 Color Space?
This is an important issue. HDMI to HDMI from your DVD player to the DLP, if upscaled will fool the TV into thinking it's receiving a "true" HD signal, which has a different color spacing than a SD signal. I set my 2910 to 720P to match native resolution, but the upscaled signal will be viewed as a HD signal, hence the Sammy will apply HD colorspacing to a signal that has SD color spacing (upscaling does not change the color space from SD to HD). This results in green depression. DVI to DVI and HMDI to DVI have different issues, some causing green push. If the Sammy service menu allowed for a choice (by input) for SD color spacing (601) or HD color spacing then we should be able to have the set properly decode the upscaled DVD signal. Remember a HDTV set top box outputting 720P or 1080i "is" a true HD signal for color spacing purposes and caries the HD color spacing information. This is why the service menu choice for SD or HD needs to be input dependant. If it changed the color spacing processing for the entire set , then when you switched to your set top box it would be wrong again (assuming you set the tv to SD, as the HDTV set top box needs HD color spacing)

Randall Morton 12-29-04, 01:03 PM Anyone get a matching stand for the 5674W? If so where did you find it?
antennahead 12-29-04, 02:09 PM It's official, I dropped the cash and finished with the credit card and now own the 4674, Denon 2910, and a Samsung 360. Hope I am comfortable with the SD to HD issue on the DVD/display hookup.
GoSpurs99 12-29-04, 04:56 PM My HL-P5674 arrived earlier today!
WOW!!!
The picture is unreal!
SA-8300HD via component looks great (HD content).
Waiting to get an upscaling DVD player, (Oppo 971?).
Time to watch more tv!!

GoSpurs, is the HDMI not enabled on your 8300?
