UPDATED: February 10, 2005

Pre-Sale Issues
-------
Q: How long is the included D4 to component cable?

A: For many, it's too short. It's only 1 meter long. JVC offers a component cable that is better shielded, cleaner picture, and has a longer length. I-O Data is planning to make longer cables available soon. (Thanks irgaac & Tom Roper)

LINK: Order JVC QAM0465-001 D-Cable (http://www.jvcservice.com/store/ShoppingCart.asp?Part=QAM0465-001)

General Section
-------
Q: Is the I-O Data AVeL LinkPlayer2 region-free/region-changable?

A: Neither the North American or Japanese versions are region-free/region-changable. They are both locked to their respective regions.

Q: When will the AVLP2 have DVI and 802.11g (WiFi) for North America?

A: I-O Data states a version with DVI output and 802.11g built-in will happen in early 2005.

Q: Can I change the DVD tray-loader in my AVLP2?

A: The Lite-On SOHD-167T is a functional replacement. <ADD: Few words about the EPO 306D loader in future> (Thanks Tom Roper)

Video Output Section
-------
Q: Does the I-O Data AVeL LinkPlayer2 (U.S.A. Version) output 1080i/720p on the components?

A: Yes. As of right now, anything played back on the unit, whether a commercial DVD to a stream DivX file off a compatible AVeL LinkPlayer2 server software will upconvert to 1080i or 720p.

Q: Does the I-O Data AVeL LinkPlayer 2 (Japanese Version) output 1080i/720p from commercial DVD's to DVI?

A: No. Only 1080i/720p out through the components.

DivX & XviD Section
-------
Q: Does the I-O Data AVeL LinkPlayer2 support QPEL & GMC?

A: According to the manual, it does not support QPEL, however we have confirmed reports that the manual is indeed incorrect and QPEL *AND* 1-point warp GMC *IS* supported by this unit. (Verified by Keith Jack from Sigma Designs).

NOTE: XviD encoders use 3-point warp GMC and are NOT compatible with the AVLP2. DivX encoders use 1-point warp GMC.

Q: Does the I-O Data AVeL LinkPlayer2 support B-Frames? (i.e. Adaptive Single Consecutive or Adaptive Multiple Consecutive Frames)

A: According to the DivX HD certification specs, ASC (Adaptive Single Consecutive) support is a requirement. This has been verified to work in both DivX and XviD files. Any more than one-consecutive B-frame in the video stream may or may not cause stutter as reported by other members.

Q: Does the AVLP2 support DAR/PAR signaling?

A: We have tested 1440x1080p/23.976 16:9 PAR flagged XviD encodes interleved with AC3 with no issues. Reports of other DAR flagged encodes have also displayed properly. ** UPDATE 12/22/2004 - This is now in question as I have tested it proving otherwise. **

WMV9-HD Section
-------
Q: Can I use the WMV9 HD VCM method for putting my WMV9 HD encodes into an AVI container?

A: Yes. Just make sure the profile setting is set to either 'Simple' or 'Main'. 'Complex' does NOT work and is not supported by the Sigma Designs EM8620L.

Audio Section
-------
Q: Does the I-O Data AVeL LinkPlayer2 support AAC-LC 5.1?

A: The Sigma Designs EM8620L only supports 2-channel AAC-LC. (Verified by Keith Jack from Sigma Designs).

Q: Does the AVLP2 support WMA Lossless?

A: The Sigma Designs chipset supports it. Current firmware releases of the AVLP2 does NOT.

Since I'm maintaining the FAQ for now, I thought this would be a great place to write a introduction about the I-O Data AVeL LinkPlayer2 and some of my thoughts.

Introduction
-------
Basically, the I-O Data AVeL LinkPlayer2 is one of the first commerically available "networkable standalone DVD players" which has the Sigma Designs EM8620L chipset. Quick background on the Sigma Designs EM8620L chipset is that it is capable of decoding high-definition (HD) MPEG-4, WMV9 HD, and MPEG-2 HDTV streams. It is also capable of upscaling any ordinary content to HDTV resolutions (720p/1080i) from commercial DVD's to network or disc playback of your homemade DivX or XviD. (There are upscaling limitations on the DVI output of the Japanese version).

History
-------
I-O Data, a Japanese company which started itself in a garage in 1976, first released the AVeL LinkPlayer2 in Japan and then in the United States several months later in November of 2004. The LinkPlayer2 is the 2nd Generation of LinkPlayer devices. The original LinkPlayer was released in 2003 based off the popular Sigma Designs EM8550 chipset.

The Current Issues
-------
As with any 'bleeding-edge' technology, there are bound to be bugs. Currently some users are experiencing problems decoding the AC3 stream from the LinkPlayer2. Some are having issues with lock-ups on certain commercial DVD discs/software which work perfectly fine in other DVD players. So far, I-O Data has been listening and a few firmware upgrades are planned to take care of issues within the next several months including the ability to play certain WMV9 DRM'ed content and WMA Pro.

Why a "Networkable" DVD Player?
-------
I am one of the few people who couldn't get into figuring out how to build the right HTPC. Looking at the HTPC section on AVSForum is enough to make the vast majority of people dizzy. This is not an insult to the HTPC enthusiasts in any way and in actuality, I am in awe of them. I have professionally been a computer service technician and avid hardware tinkerer for the better part of 10 years. However, when it comes to making sure the right Directshow filter is installed for a particular codec then trying to change the priority level of multiple vendor filters for the same filetype, dealing with and tweaking with the latest Catalyst drivers from ATI or what not... frankly not all people want to mess with all of that.

Then there are the Microsoft Media Center PC's available from retailers and on-line shops. That's still is too much. What a lot of us wanted was a DVD player which allowed us to enjoy the best of what entertainment has to offer. There are of course, DVD's, HDTV, music and pictures. We're the group which goes, "Why can't they just put everything into a DVD player and keep it simple?" I am the group which downloads or archives personal content to DivX and XviD. I am part of the group which likes HDTV and wants to be able to download, archive, and purchase HDTV content (WMV9 HD on-disc DRM'ed titles are already available in Germany). So here comes the HDTV "networkable" DVD player. This DVD player basically connects up to your home network, you run a server on your PC and you are able to stream the most popular media files, within reason, to your LinkPlayer2 on demand in a nice GUI on your HDTV set, or regular TV set for that matter.

Want to watch the latest DivX HD trailer of a movie? Download it and watch it on your 50" DLP HDTV set. Want to listen to Internet Radio or play tunes from your personal music collection while having an HDTV slideshow of pictures from your recent vacation? The I-O Data AVeL LinkPlayer2 will do it!

Conclusion
-------
The AVLP2 is basically for anyone who wants:

* The ability to upscale DVD's or other content to HDTV resolutions. This is nice since in most cases if your TV set is LCD or DLP HDTV, you want to run this at your native resolution. (720p)

* The ability to play HDTV content including the forth coming WMV9 HD, DivX/XviD HD or archived MPEG-2 TS (proper support for TS coming in a firmware update).

* Have the huge library of DivX/XviD/MP3/WMA/OGG/AAC etc. on a PC/Mac and would like to enjoy your content on your HDTV set without having to 'burn' to a CD-R/RW or DVD-R/RW. All over the network!

* Anyone who's thought about an HTPC or a Windows MCE PC but balked at the complexity or price.

It took six-months to get my home built but here's the results! Finally got the InFocus 4805 installed!

http://www.splashblog.com/kermee/13776.jpg

My screen is a 92" Da-Lite HCCV PermWall. I have:

* Three Triad InCeiling Gold/6 Omni's for FL, C and FR.
* Two Polk TC610i's for surrounds.
* Two Polk TC80i's for rears.
* One Linn SIZMIK 10.25 subwoofer.

Using a Denon AVR-3805 receiver and only have an I-O Data AVLP2 hooked up to it right now.

I'm loving it!

It should also be mentioned that the Momitsu server software for the 800N is based off the same server core and is fully compliant with the Linkplayer2, and adds some internet functionality + search and other useful tools.

Please note that while this is theoretically accurate per the IOData website, my brand new player (along with others throughout the other thread here) does not have this firmware. I have contacted my IODATA rep to see what the deal is here.

FYI, the current firmware we have is:

03-19-041018-01-IOD-234-011

If I read this correctly, the latest firmware is a November 30th release, while we only have the October 18th release.

Has anyone been able to get a hold of this mysterious November 30th release?

If I had to guess IOData made a mistake and that is actually the Japanese firmware release.

You have to download the latest firmware using the FW icon in the setup screen.

Obviously, but it says I have the latest version and will not let me proceed.

Do you have the North American model, and if so what is your firmware version?

I have been able to upgrade the firmware to the latest version but have rolled my player back to the original firmware due to the new firmware breaking some DivXHD and TS playback.

Nice work, Kermee. Ok, it's a sticky. Just remember David can "un -stick" it at his discretion.

Hi Larry!

Thanks for making this a sticky. This FAQ will be updated with pertinent information for as long as needed (which I'm assuming is going to be QUITE a while).

Anyone did test AVeL LinkPlayer2 with new mpeg4 codec NeroDigital/Ateme? HiDef trailers in bottom of this page:

P.S. Nice codec!

The new update from the IOData site includes the latest firmware information (unfortunately DRM support was pushed into January).

However, there is a note on there that explains why I am stuck on the October firmware:

"Now our update server is not working for the maintainace."

I guess that is why my player keeps telling me it has the latest version while it is stuck on the late October 18th firmware :)

Hi-

In reference to your problems playing XviDs encoded with GMC; unlike DivX GMC which uses 1 warp point, XviD GMC uses 3 warp points, and is unplayable by this or any other player. If you want to encode using XviD, do not use GMC.

My old Denon 2800 also doesn't decode AC3 coming out of the AVeL; only tested one DVD. DTS works.

Can the USB port be connected to a PC to then play the DVD source material from the I-O unit through the PC's display? My PC presently doesn't have a DVd drive, just a CD drive.

You are the second person (that I know of) who's confirmed the Sigma chip-set is able to support Mpeg4 pixel frame sizes, way beyond the stated size of 1280x720.

Great news indeed ;)

Does the IOData output through component AND composite/s-video simultaneously, or do you have to choose one or the other at a time?

Edit: Found the answer in the monster thread: No.

Hi guys,
Looking for a "future" DVD player. No HDTV yet!
Question: Will this player play "regular DVDs on a SDTV??
Checking, because I like the idea. Would be a nice player now and for a time when I get an HDTV!

Will this player play "regular DVDs on a SDTV?? Yes - there is a composite and Svideo output in the back of it.

Do you mean the answer is "NO"?

You can get output via component and S/composite simutaneously when you choose "component 480i" in the setup menu. I connected component to projector and S to TV without problem.

Curious about this player: why does the iodata site claim that it doesn't have an upscaling function- I thought the sigma chip provided the upscaling- isn't that the whole point of this player? Also, this is component/analog, so is the resolution as good as the other hdmi/dvi players (panasonic, e.x.)? Finally, does it play the WMV HD DVD's without much of a hassle?

thanks

Took delivery of this machine today. . . Tokyo.
Q:
When we check for firmware updates are the USA and Japanese machines hard-wired to access the updates from their respective country's site? I.E. USA machine accesses a USA host, etc?

Or is it impossible to do such a switcheroo in any case?

I find the Japanese katakana a bit clumsy to read and I always have to call one of my kids to read the Kanji. Wish it was all in English.

BTW, here's the full firmware info for my machine:
FIRMWARE VERSION: 03-42-041101-01-IOD-231-000
FILE SYSTEM: 01-10D
DVD-ROM model: EPO EPO-LDR DP-306D
DVD-ROM FIRMWARE VERSION: 586H

For the bazillionth time...It absolutely WILL upscale 100% of the time. The information stated to the contrary...is wrong.

And it plays WMV-HD perfectly, way above the stated 8mb/s (which is also wrong) with the following disclaimers:

1.) No support at this time for DRM (digital rights management)
2.) No native support at this time for WMA9 5.1 Pro audio

As for the comparison of resolution as good as other hdmi/dvi players, it should be at least as good on component owing to its 150mhz 12 bit DAC and native support (not just upscaled) support for 720p and 1080i. As for the comparison to DVI/HDMI which the AVLP2-DVDLA (US Spec) does not have, that's a matter of opinion. The component output from the AVLP2 has at times been described as tending toward the soft side, but it's undeniable it suffers from no macro-blocking maladies either.

Yes to the first question.

No one has done the switcheroo, but the details of the Japanese spec unit vary, including WiFi wireless networking and DVI output. It might not be a good idea to switch firmwares even if it was possible.

Thanks for the confirmation. (And yes, I got the WiFi (AVel2) model.)

The only anomaly I have come across (neophyte that I am) is the following:
I burned some DivX files to a DVD, also an MPEG2 file.
Some of the DivX files played reliably each and every time, no matter what.
Other DivX files would only play if they were the *first* to be played immediately after switching on the machine. The MPEG2 likewise. The disk would just spin for a while, then silence, black screen.
Turn off/on the ADeL2, select the problem file, plays right away. Go figure.

Most likely culprit?
Classic symptoms of. . . ?

Tom,

In your early reviews of this player, you described the component output as soft.
Do you no longer feel that way? Have you ever compared the component output to any of the other upconverting players?

Thanks

Tom Roper
01-04-05, 03:25 PM
Robert, the 720p DVD output is soft in my opinion. The 1080i output seems better. When I made the soft observations, I was basing it on the 720p, output which happens to be the native resolution of my DLP set. That said, even with the attendant conversions associated with upconverting 720p WMV-HD content to 1080i only to be downconverted again by the DLP monitor when displayed....1080i still looks better, even on my native 720p DLP monitor, very counter intuitive.

If I play a DVD disk with the THX video tests, it shows all the resolution bars at 1080i and looks the best, and the cleanest at 1080i.

Describing things subjectively is difficult when differences are small. The HD picture quality at 1080i is nicely detailed, but not as resolute as 720p playback from a HTPC with bit-mapped 1 to 1 pixel perfect scaling.

I have viewed component and DVI output from many upconverting players, but unfortunately not in a side by side setting. Upconverted 1080i DVD playback is however, more impressive and satisfying than what I DO have a lot of experience with, my other player a Secrets top-rated Panasonic RP82.

The I-O Data LinkPlayer2 compares very favorably to the RP82. Better resolution and color, a complete absence of color banding (owing to the 12 bit 150mhz DAC) and an overall snappier, more satisfying HD-like picture from commercial DVD titles. In favor of the RP82 is flawless deinterlacing, slightly better shadow detail and better reading of marginal, burned DVD-R media.

For DVD-Video playback, the picture quality of the LinkPlayer2 you won't get too many complaints from most of the owners. Cliff Watson made an observation he was not impressed with it, but also determined his test sample had a problem, and he returned it due to an observation that there was no black detail below 64 millivolts (I think.) We could be parsing hairs. He's a critical reviewer.

I also feel the picture quality is improved by replacing the abysmal included D4 component connector for a JVC cable with better shielding, that noticeably cleans up the picture (while not actively enhancing anything). Just makes what is passed more transparent, cleaner background. Makes the overall image more picture-window-like.

So things have changed a bit for the better from my earliest observations. But in general, the "soft" 720p output and poor D4 cable observations still apply. Hope that helps. I don't want to be hyping this product, but I can't conceal that I'm quite fond of it. If you think about the reasons why that would be, I think you could safely conclude many owners share satisfaction on some level with it, not always the same. Some are enamored for its networking prowess, or ability to play back mpeg4 formats like DivX-HD, or photos. There's enough to like that we put up with some lackings that might otherwise be unforgivable, like occasional hiccups when FF'ing or the lack of a progress indicator on the panel readout, or time display. It's a diamond in the rough, that probably will never be polished but simply does a lot of things, and most of them exceedingly well.

Like Tom, I ordered the JVC D4 cable but have yet to have a chance to hook it up. I will post my impressions when I get said chance.

My impressions so far in an A/B comparision between MyHD and the LinkPlayer (MyHD into RGB in on my PJ at 720p, Link at 720p or 1080i via component)- MyHD looked a little brighter and seemed a little sharper. It is also much lower on the WAF at least for me, and that is even as hard as I have tried to integrate it (pretty well, I might add) into an HTPC front-end. However, I may not have been giving the Linkplayer a fair shake. I never did projector adjustments with it, assuming it would be the same as my other sources. Since I now cannot see below black, I may not have it set up properly. That should not effect sharpness, but it woudl account for the impression that MyHD has more "pop" in the picture when doing an A/B. I will need to adjust it more to the Linkplayer to see.

Speaking of dark picture, is Shrek 2 a dark movie? I watched it with the lights up somewhat and had some trouble making out a lot of the details I am used to seeing in bright, sharp animation. My son & I watched Toy Story 2 last night, though, it it looked great. Just an aside question.

After I have a chance to play more w/ the new cable & projector settings I will post back. I would use 1080i more, but unfortunately, my upstairs set, also getting a feed from the LinkPlayer, does not like interlaced HD signals. One item on the action list for I-O with new firmware would be to allow discrete control over aspect ratio choices, so I can program a macro to always select 1080i when viewed on one set, and another macro for 720 on another. If not, I may have to be the first here (I think) with two of these bad-boys.

BTW, why are we all posting to two threads now? Shouldn't a lot of this go in the main thread and not the FAQ thread?

I-O Data does now offer 10m long cables, but I'm hesitant to buy because if the original cables were poorly shielded, these could be as well. The problem would only get worse over a 30 foot run, too.

On the other hand, I'm also afraid that using couplers to join something like the JVC cable to my current 25 foot component cable will degrade quality as well. What's the best option here?

Thanks a lot, Tom, that does help.

A sharp 1080i DVD output will be just fine! I have a Zenith DVB318, but the networking features of this would be great to have. I'm less interested in playing HD files.

I have had white screen problems too, which I think were due to a corrupt database.
I was pointing the server at a large group of audio files (22 GB of MP3 audio in 6692 files), and the server would stop responding, and I terminated the process.
I uninstalled, deleted all of the AVeL server files (see the list below), and then reinstalled, and it recovered. Perhaps if I gave it enough time to build the full database, then maybe it would work fine???

Anyway, for debugging, the following locations are of interest:

Momitsu server:

C:\Program Files\MOMITSU MEDIA CENTER\work (temporary files)
C:\Program Files\MOMITSU MEDIA CENTER\conf (configuration of the video/audio/photo paths)
My Documents\MOMITSU MEDIA CENTER Library (database of the files available for serving)
No information is stored in the Windows registry, as far as I can tell.
The configuration files have log level settings, but I have not found any log files created

AVeL Link server:
C:\Program Files\I-O DATA DEVICE,INC\AVeL Link Server\work (temporary files)
C:\Program Files\I-O DATA DEVICE,INC\AVeL Link Server\conf (configuration of the video/audio/photo paths)
My Documents\AVeL Link Library (database of the files available for serving)
No information is stored in the Windows registry, as far as I can tell.
The configuration files have log level settings, but I have not found any log files created

AVeL Advanced Server:
C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\I-O DATA DEVICE,INC\AVeL Link Advanced Server
(Note that this folder is located under the Documents and Settings folder even if you have relocated your "My Documents" to another location.)
server-config.xml has the configuration for the server
server.log has useful debugging information
playlist.xml has the database of files which appear in the upper ("Playlist") section of the server configuration
The registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\I-O DATA DEVICE,INC.\AVeL Link Advanced Server has some window state information

Another tip: the advanced server uses ports 8010, 8011, 8012, 8013, 8014, 8015, and 8020, and will have problems if something else (momitsu or regular server, for example) is using one of these ports. I tried setting the Momitsu server to port 8020, and things became very erratic. Things also were erratic when I tried running both the Momitsu server and the IOData regular server at the same time on different ports.

FlipFlop
01-08-05, 09:52 PM
Another debugging tip:

With the Momitsu server and the regular LinkPlayer server, you can point your web browser at http://localhost:8000 (or whatever port number you configured it for). If things are set up correctly, you should get a set of web pages that look a lot like what you see on the LinkPlayer2.

The advanced server blocks access from standard web browsers, so with the advanced server you will just get "404 file not found" errors, but at least this tells you the server is running. If the server is not running, you will get "Cannot find server or DNS Error".

Does anyone know anything about the D-Link DSM-520 and DSM-5208R HD Network Players? You can read a bit about them in their press release here:

http://presslink.dlink.com/pr/?prid=210

I saw them at CES but they weren't running and the D-Link employee didn't know too much about them. I wonder if they might contain the same Sigma EM8620 chip as the AverLink2? In theory, the D-Link boxes can play a variety of HD content (and many other formats) off a server and the 5208 can store it locally on its own hard drive if desired.

To be honest, I know D-Link will likely be around for a few years while I'm not so sure about IO Data or Momitsu in this country. A lot of "no name" DVD players have already come and gone.

D-Link also already has their Plays For Sure certification for DRM. I have to wonder if a company like IO Data will really get the certification for DRM? From what I understand, companies have to jump through quite a few tough hoops to get it? The content providers have seen to that.

If D-Link will soon have a comparable product, that could be good news.

yes mate, but this is why people are questioning what WMV-HD material people are watching at the moment and whether from disc or network.

Did some tests last night. I was able to play the trailers on the MS site that were not drm'd via the network and burned onto a CD as long as they were 720P. the 1080p versions were not reconized. The 3 Pre-recorded discs that I have would only play the non-feature material on them. (T2/Coral Reef/Step into Liquid). I believe that Tom Roper has been successful in encoding his HD-Cam material and playing it OK. My real test would be taking my JVC D-VHS recorded files, encoding them to WMV-HD and having them play. I don't think I would have a problem since most of them now play in WMP10. However I still have not been successful in encoding any of my recordings to WMVHD.

I got lost in the main thread, so I'll post here for some help maybe. I have the player, and can play some QT movies of off my laptop, but that's about it. I have a whole bunch of other movies on the hard drive, but I can't show it through the Linkplayer. The format of the movies are now .VOB. What do I have to do to make them playable? Thanks for the help. I followed your instructions and it worked out well! Now I just need to figure out how to play the files continously (like a whole movie), instead of having to click on the files individually! I don't know if this works from the server as I haven't hooked it up yet but from a DVD clicking on Play (on the remote) with the first file selected will then play the files as a series, unfortunately with slight break between displaying each file name in the upper left (they need to make that an option that can be turned off).

I have a DVB318 and absolutely love the 1080i upscaled DVD picture from its component output on my 65" Mits. But I'm really attracted to the network feature available on the LinkPlayer2. So my question is, will LinkPlayer2, when playing regular DVDs from its own drive or through the network, at least equals the DVB318 in video performance(especially scaling) when outputting thru component at 1080i?

I bought both the DVB318 and the LinkPlayer2 about two months ago and component output for both players are pretty much the same (DLP FP 1080i). Over the network should not be a factor if both the server and bandwidth requirement were met. Actually network is where it shines.

The wizd server (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=496964) will automatically combine the VTS_X_Y.VOB into a single file so they play uninterrupted on the LinkPlayer.

So is this player a good alternative to a Sony 400 disc mega changer? My wife has been asking about multi disc changers, but I would like to get the LinkPlayer2 to access all of my DVDShrink ripped DVDs over the network. I'm a little concerned about having to merge all the vob files to play back smoothly.

Also, what does the movie interface look like. Is there any possibility of adding any cover art? Or is it just a text list of movies?

I really don't care if they use "true" WMA lossless for audio only files. I was just hoping for some compressed lossless support. I would rather have FLAC, anyway. I believe the Australian DVD player with the same chip is touting FLAC as a supported format.

For the record, I brought WMA lossless to their attention and I was expecting it to be supported through their Advanced AVEL software that uses Windows Media Player to decoded different formats. They made no promises at the time, but said they would look into it if I provided them with a file. According to the email I received from them the other day, I gathered that it was improbable that it would ever be supported. I fail to see the humor, but to each his own.

So do I read this correctly that we may never be able to play commercial WMVHD discs with the audio? Or, is WMA Pro something different? They claimed it would and if not then they have some explaining to do.

Or, is WMA Pro something different? At first, the company indicated that the reason WMA lossless would not play was related to the WMA Pro format issues. Here is the latest email:

"Now our team is still working to look for some ideas to support WMA
lossless files. However, it may be very difficult. Sigma Design's says
WMA lossless is very different codec, so the basic decoding function of
EM8620 chip cannot support it. So our software engineer is looking for
another idea. This is just updated news.

I guessed this support was not so difficult. But our team needs more
time. Thank you for understanding."

WMA lossless is a compression technology that plays back music in a lossless format. It is not the same as WMA Pro. Sorry for the confusion.

It's time to lobby them to allow Advanced Server to transcode WMA lossless to WMA standard or MP3.

What is allowing the Australian DVD player to enable FLAC support? Just different firmware? I would love to see FLAC support added too.

They may be doing it in something like the Advanced server -- eg they transcode FLAC to something else before sending it to the player.

I would love to see FLAC support added too.I have sent them an email with this question (I also mentioned the Australian player and sent them a link). If you want FLAC support, you may want to contact their customer service. They may be more inclined to try to add it if they think there is a demand.

I would prefer native FLAC support, but transcoding would be my second choice.

Answer from Linkplayer Custiomer service:
"Ummm... Yes, you're right.
We can support FLAC soon. But the priority is not so high. Please wait
for Feb/Mar updating. I have already asked to our team.

...Also Feb/Mar updating version should support nero digital too."

I thought this question might get some more notice here than in the other thread.

I have had some consistent playback problems with DVDs. What happens is when there is a sudden bright image, it causes the picture to flash and become unstable for a second. Two examples of this happening are with my store bought DVDs of Gladiator (several times, but first noticed it when the balls of fire hit the trees in the first battle in Germania) and Pirates of the Carribean (near the beginning, when the cannons of the Black Pearl fire on Port Royal).

It's VERY obvious when it happens. The whole picture jumps for a second, almost as if it's about to start rolling like my old TV that had bad V-hold.

Has anyone else seen this? It seems like a strange thing to happen to only my machine, and yet I haven't heard anyone else talk about it. I never saw it happen with either of my old DVD players.

I looked through about fifty pages of the other monster thread and saw no mention of this so I thought I'd post it here.

I have only seen somethig similar happen once. I was playing back a Divx file over the network and it looked kind of like a lightning bolt on my screen. It was strange because it happened as the screen lit up with lightning in the scene. I have only had it happen once on one file, so I assumed it was a random problem caused by the divx file itself (It happened every time I played it in the same exact place). I will test Gladiator this week and see if I have the probem again.

JaredB,

Do you happen to have a Sony set? Some Sony's have a known problem with the "A" Board.

KP-53HS10, KP-53XBR300, KP-61HS10
KP-61XBR300 Specifically.

Service Bulletin 4432R from Sony has more information.

JaredB I had this same problem due to an Audio Authority Model 1154 (I'm not sure if the new 1154A does this). I have two of these devices and they work great with all my other sources but not the Avel. I also had problems during credits of movies (black background white letting). I suggest trying the player directly into the TV and see if you have the same problems. If you feed the signal thru any switching device it could be the cause of your problems.

JaredB, this won't help, but I just played back Pirates of the Carribean, beginning with the scene where the cannons of the Black Pearl fire on Port Royal, about 29 minutes in, to the completion of the scene and the capture of Elizabeth, the governor's daughter by the pirates, about 7 minutes later. There was no jumping of the picture or problem of any kind anywhere. It played flawlessly. Just giving you my observation.

I will try Gladiator later...

Some quick questions I haven't spotted in this FAQ:

1) Will Linkplayer ever provide a way to adjust overscan?
2) Will Linkplayer ever be able to play 1080p WMV9 format? (I think not, due to Sigma chip limitation)

Thanks

You'll need to adjust overscan within your display. I'm using the Linkplayer and a PT-L500U projector and have under 3% overscan. I could be way off but I don't know of any DVD player (especially sub $300) that has overscan adjustment.

potus
01-31-05, 03:52 PM
No, in general DVD players do not have overscan adjustment, but good ones at least do NOT ADD overscan, like the Linkplayer apparently does. On your projector, you should theoretically be able to get to 0% overscan, and see ALL the pixels, but since the Linkplayer (for some unknown reason) effectively applies a "pre" overscan, you can't adjust it out. That's why you can only get it down to 3%. This means that even if you set the Linkplayer for 720p resolution, the projector will NOT see 1280x720 due to the overscan applied. 3% will be cropped off. It is a shame that you cannot achieve "pixel-perfect" display for your 1280x720 projector.

And the Linkplayer is somewhat different from your typical DVD player. First, it is High Def, and second, it can play network streams (High def as well as SD...) The Roku HD1000, which is similar but without the DVD drive, has a very nice and easy to use overscan adjustment. You can even adjust it to UNDER-scan if you want to counter-balance overscan that cannot be adjusted at the display.

Completely user-adjustable overscan would be the best solution, but simply removing the existing overscan would probably suffice.

So how does the picture quality of this player compare to other progressive scan component players? I'm interested in hooking this up to my 42" Panny (7UY) via component.

I love the idea behind all the networking features on this box, but if the PQ suffers then all the extra features don't matter at all.

Thx,

I understand what you're saying, but it's not out there in this price range. If you want a "pixel-perfect" display, then you're gonna need something with DVI or HDMI.

At under 3% I'm still far far less overscan that what's built into almost every rear projection HD display on the market.

If you're looking for something that has this feature take a look at the Malata's. They have a player that has overscan correction.

I previously owned the Samsung HD841 and the Denon 910 (with Faroudja) and the picture quality from the Linkplayer beats them both easily. A couple people here in this thread have commented that it's as good as the highly regarded Zenith DVB318.

tom don't forget that you've upgraded your dvd drive. My epo dvd drive was doing funny things with movies and i too upgraded it, definitely well worth the 30 bux i spent. Fixed all of the previous issues i had with dvd's. and reads and loads a lot faster. Only downfall is that it is extremely loud on startup, which is gone once the movie actually loads. What i don't get and i've emailed iodata about this is how come they havent' upgraded the firmware for the epo loader, it's the exact same loader in the momitsu but momitsu has a firmware release that actually upgrades the loader, which i'm sure someone can easily disect and load it as a bin file through a pc.

as for picture quality it is easily as good as the momitsu through dvi except that the momitsu seemed just a tad more vibrant with colors, and i've purchased the zenith but didn't like it, and also the oppo and didn't like it. Well that's just from my experience others may tend to disagree.

I couldn't disagree with you more. First, you can ABSOLUTELY get pixel-perfect display via component. No reason why you can't. You don't NEED DVI or HDMI. You just need to be able to adjust the timing, which you can do either at the source, or at the display. (I admit DVI would be nice, though, and probably make this issue moot. The Japanese version has DVI... I wonder why we got the D4 version?)

Second, this feature should NOT add significant cost to the Linkplayer. It is almost CERTAINLY just a software issue. I would be extremely surprised to find that this very capable chip does not support user-programmable scan timing.

As far as cost goes, the Roku HD1000, which HAS this feature, can be purchased at Amazon for $279. And that is > 1yr old design. This capability should be doable at the Linkplayer's price point. In many other ways, the newer chip in the Linkplayer beats the Roku hands down. It ought to be able to do overscan adjustment.

Like I said, at the very least, there should be an option to omit the overscan added by the Linkplayer. This should be trivial to implement in firmware.

The ONLY reason IOData may not work on this, is if they _think_ noone cares about it. Afterall, they have to prioritize what to work on. Well, I for one, DO care. I would think that others (particularly owners of 1280x720 fixed pixel displays) would care, too.

Based on what I have read here, it seems this company is fairly responsive to user feedback. I am actually fairly optimistic that this feature may become available at some point.

Alternatively, any more word on DVI release for US market?

Microsoft supports anamorphic tagging. Just like DivX/XviD supports PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio) and DAR (Display Aspect Ratio). Most of Microsoft's 1080p WMV9-HD sample materials are 1440x1080p, anamorphic.

With the North American version of the AVLP2, we've been able to play back any common "standard" NTSC ATSC MPEG-2 stream. (i.e. 1080i/29.97, 720p/59.94).

I, personally, have not had any luck with 1080p/25 (PAL) on this particular unit. It will play but it stutters. Other than that, anything you record OTA should play back perfectly fine on this unit.

This is really strange. Yesterday I reported that the Enable HD mode browser: off option was causing the display of all content type to be looking a bit strange.

I encoded myself some HD test charts in 480p, 720p & 1080p resolutions and played them back over the network to the player. I tested with the "Enable HD mode browser" option on and off to compare the results and the short conclusion from the test is stick to the ON option (at least if you have an 16:9 set).

Here is the details of the test:

With NO HD:

480p: Is stretched to 16:9 (as described on IO-DATA web site.. I do not like this behavior...). Zoom options have almost no effect except for "Square Pixel" that remove the top and bottom overscan. "Actual Size" or "Full Screen" zoom option gives roughly 10% overscan all around. Note that "Full Screen" move the picture slightly to the left.

720p: The "Actual Size" zoom put some minor black bars at the top and bottom giving the picture a compressed look (certainly not 16:9 aspect ratio... bad). "Square Pixel" make this effect even worst (this look really bad). "Full Screen" zoom is the only properly sized option with 10% overscan all around.

1080p: This is roughly the same as 720p with the exception that the "Square Pixel" option display a ton of white lines all over the image... Like when the refresh rate of a PC monitor is exceeded and the display look all garbled. Again, best mode is "Full Screen" with proper aspect ratio.

With HD option ON:

480p: "Actual Size" option clearly show the proper aspect ratio with black bars all around. Actually the size of the image is like displaying a 720x480 image in the midle of a 1920X1080 (1080HD) black picture. "Fit to screen" option stretch the 4:3 picture so it fill the screen top to bottom with a Top-Bottom overscan of about 10%. The 4:3 aspect ratio is properly maintained therefore there is some small black bars on each side and no left-right overscan. This mode is really cool for watching 480p or 480i content. "Square Pixel" zoom add some small black bars at the top and bottom and eliminate the top-bottom overscan. The picture becomes stretched to 16:9 format. " Full Screen" removes the black bars all around and has a 10% overscan. Aspect ratio is also stretched to 16:9.

Ouf, are you still with me?

720p: "Actial Size", "Fit to Screen" and "Full Screen" all display with roughly 10% overscan all around. "Squate Pixel" add small black bars to the top and bottom therefore squishing the picture and breaking the proper 16:9 ratio.

1080p: Same as 720p. This time the "Square Pixel" option display properly. Strange that the no HD option does not.

Conclusion: Use the HD Browser mode if you want better control of you picture. I also noticed that the overall picture quality of the NO HD option look worst than with HD browser mode ON. Can't explain it. Any ideas?

Note: I encoded all my test patterns in xvid with q2 option. I could make the files available if some of you are interested to reproduce this test. For the record my TV is a Sony 34-KVHS510 CRT. I have the December firmware on my linkplayer. Test files are ranging between 1.5 to 2.5 MBytes in size.

In the past I have used DVD authoring programs like Sonic MyDVD to create disks with a mixture of video and slides. Of course, it's all limited to 720 by 480 so the stills don't look very good.

Is there good software tools for creating slideshows with misic, transitions, etc. in WMV9 or some other 1080 format that the Avel understands? Of course, freeware is allways best <grin>. I realize I can just slideshow a folder but I'd rather create specific slideshows in advance.

Does anyone know if I made a custom cable from the D4 connector if I'd be able to get HD resolutions to analog RGBHV?

That's one reason the Momitsus are so popular with my fellow CRT projector owners (because no component transcoder is required... we can just tap into the Momitsu's analog pins on its DVI-I connector).

I'd have to make a D4->5BNC cable. All the RGBHV pins are there, but I don't know if the HD signal will be there or if it's limited to 31kHz VGA...

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D4), the free encyclopedia.

D4 is a type of analog video connector - found on Japanese consumer electronics - typically HDTV,DVD,Bluray,D-VHS and HD-DVD devices. In appearence it is a small flat trapezoid connector. It carries a Component video signal. A device with a D4 connector can understand and display the following video signals : D1 - 525i (480i), D2 - 525p (480p), D3 - 1125i (1080i/1035i), D4 - 750p (720p).

It is possible to use a simple breakout cable to connect a D4 connector to a world standard 3 RCA jack or BNC component connection.http://ucon64.sourceforge.net/ucon64misc/conn.html

http://ucon64.sourceforge.net/ucon64misc/images/xboxm.gifhttp://ucon64.sourceforge.net/ucon64misc/images/xboxf.gif

There are so far five D connector types, each a higher resolution than the last. Used primarily for Japanese digital satellite broadcasting, the resolutions are:

D1 525 Interlaced
D2 525 progressive
D3 1125 Interlaced
D4 750 progressive
D5 1125 progressive

Note that each is backward compatible. This means that a D5 TV can display all of these modes, where a D3 TV can only display D1-D3.

Hi Clarence. Welcome to the LinkPlayer party! Hope the theater build is going well. I have not checked into your thread in a while. Anyway, I have a LinkPlayer in my setup in Leesburg if you ever want to see it in action. BTW, I am planning to move my family room custom projection RP system down to the basement for a dedicated theater soon, so we should get together at some point in the future anyway. I know you went down the RP road for a while.
Let me know if you have any LinkPlayer questions.
Now, back on topic: the D4 standard is that the LinkPlayer outputs is component video, which is a different color space then RGB. While the connector would allow the Y, Pb, and Pr signals to be broken out onto three BNC connectors, this would still not be RGB. If your CRT can take component video or RGB via the BNCs (set up in a menu setting) then you would be fine. I know the Sony D50 I had could do that. (I have since become a traitor and gone to DLP.) Anyway, since the RGBS or RGBHV signal is NOT in the D4 output, you would either need a transcoder or have the ability to transcode in the projector. I cannot recall if the Ehomes do this or not.

Hope all else is well. PM me if you want to meet real-time sometime.
-Mike

You're showing the correct connector diagram but not pinouts. As in the diagram, there are a total of 14 pins (and there's no audio in the D connectors).

I see now what you did; you're showing the Xbox one. The D4 is bove it:

It doesn't look like there are Synch signals.

Hi:

My problem is with photos. Not noticing any with DVDs. When a bright photo is first fading in, I saw the bright vertical white wave go from the left of the screen and grow to the right. Sometimes it will go away and other times it will stay on half of the screen and shimmering. Very annoying. In the worst case, my TV will think something is trying to change Format/PIP setting. My TV(Mitsubishi RP) don't allow 1080i content to change zoom format or PIP, so it pop an yellow error message.

I called their call center and left several messages. No body ever called back. Emailed Jack and got a reply three, four days later and never heard from him again since.

I'm happy the new firmware fixed my AC3 problem. I wonder if this unit is defective.

-Mike Hi Mike-

The Electrohomes don't have a built in component transcoder. I've got a cheap external one, but it's not good enough for HD HT. Eventually I'll get a good transcoder for my HD cable box and DVHS HD player. I'll just stick to my Momitsu for now for upscaled DVDs.

Have you shopped for RP screens yet? I've got 10' da-lite RP if you want to try it just for test runs. And I've got a couple of high-quality first surface RP mirrors just sitting in the corner. I'm actually tempted to revisit RP myself after seeing the setup at Myer-Emco in Sterling. Go check that baby out.

epsilon, thanks for the pinout info.

mikemav,

I've got some questions about this player too. I've had this player for about 2 months now and am enjoying it a lot, for the most part. So far I haven't explored the Networking feature yet.

1) During playback of DVDs. When I choose to have it play at 1080i, I get some strange banding on the bottom of the screen. I've tried moving the cables around, but it didn't help (I thought it was noise). The banding has only shown up during 1080i playback. 480i/p/720p are fine and show no banding at the bottom. This is especially evident when playing back movies that are taking up the full 16:9 screen (it's not so obvious when I watch films that have bars on top and bottom). I keep thinking it's noise/interference, but I can't isolate it. I don't think the problem is at the display either. I am using a Pioneer PDP 4300. I've seen other 1080i material on this plasma panel before, and have had no banding on the bottom. I would LOVE to fix this problem, because the 1080i (when it works right) shows so much more detail than 720p. This was so obvious when I was testing the Saving Private Ryan DVD. The church scene: 720p made everything dark, and you can't see the detail of the church floor, or the banisters and shadows were very muddy. In 1080i, all the details were very clear to make out (not exagerated), and the shadows were very obvious. So I really want this to work!

2) I get a lot of hang-ups when I try to skip the previews and go straight to the menus. It's killing me, because all the buttons on the remote/unit freeze, and I have to shut it off and reboot. This happens on all different sorts of DVDs. This is also a very ethical player, as it FORCES me to watch all the COPYRIGHT/TRADEMARK screens! Is this normal?

3) In terms of the HD Browser mode, what is the ideal setting that I should use? ie, actual size? fit to screen?

Thanks a lot!

If that doesn't work I guess I should contact Avel since it doesn't seem that anyone else has this problem.

It sounds like I have the same problem. I also have a Mits RPTV.
and using my AV receiver for video switching
It will play every thing fine in 480p but not in 1080i, my TV wont take 720p. It will not play its own graphics when playing music or a photo slide show in 1080i, my TV goes all goofy and then just goes blue screen. (like when I put a 720p signal into it)
I have 2 other HDTVs in the house I will try and hook it up to them today (Tuesday) and see if it acts the same or if its just on the Mits.

caprose, I have a Mits 55807. over 4 years old. Similiar problem with some photos. I posted earlier in this thread about it. I can watch DVD, Divx, Xvid, HD Divx and HD WMV just fine in 1080i mode. Only one SVCD gives me problems in certain frames. Pictures give me the most problem. Not all pictures. Most picture(including the one from their server) will first show the distortion and then display OK. But for some pcitures, the distortion won't go away. And this will cause the TV think I'm trying to change format or do HD PIP. Only GIF stock charts I created will make display go crazy and then go blue or black. 480p mode does not show distortion. But pictures can't fill the 4:3 frame. maybe I need to turn off the hd browser mode.

I'd like very much to see how your other HDTVs do. If they are fine, Maybe time to replace the TV.

BTW, I finally got hold of IODATA call center. They are issuing a RMA on my unit.

Hello.

Just got my player tonight. Running through a quick checkout of the unit. I was messing around with some wmvhd and I am seeing an issue during playback (checked both threads, found nothing, sorry if it is a repeat).

I have a 4 gig wmv hd file 1280 x 720p. (ok, it is island fever 3). It seems to start ok, but within 10-15 seconds, it plays, stops, plays stops etc. If I pause for a few seconds, it seems to catch up and play smoothly before the pauses start again.
I downloaded some other wmvhd trailers (T2, dust to glory). They play back with no pauses at all. Flashed the firwmare on the player. Same problem. Tried using different machines as the avelink server, same problem.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks
Gregg

I'm seeing a shredding effect at the bottom of the screen on my Mitsubishi TV as well when using 1080i HD browser.

It happens when using the slideshow as the new image fades and the old one is being replaced. It also happens when the background image fades in while playing music.

So whatever technique the player uses to fade images is causing the video at 1080i to have some compatibility issues with some TVs. I'm sure this is the case, since one release of the software removed the fading and the issue went away. I think I'm lucky compared to some here, since my video only shreds for 5 seconds on the bottom 20% of the screen. Every once in while my TV will go blue screen, just as though it did not detect a 1080i signal.

I've read there is some way to set the fading rate, but I can't find it anymore.
If there is a way to set the fade rate to 0, then I think we can temporarily solve our problem. I hope IOData solves this one soon.

Everyone I've demonstrated my player to has stated they would not purchase one because of this issue.

I too have a older Mits RPTV (55857) and I have no shredding issues during video playback. I haven't tried JPG playback since I got the unit back in December but I don't recall any issues with that either. I will test that again with the latest firmware tonight.

epsilon, have you ever tried to play mp3 with stock background? That's one place you can test without your own JPG.

Fortunately, unlike GoingHD, almost all my video playback is perfect. I only had problem with one SVCD among hundreds of video files of various format I played.

I just disabled the HD mode browser. Still 1080i output. It got a lot better. Every once in a while, I still have pictures mess up. But not as severe. Sometimes just a little spike or two.

I wonder RMA will do me any good?

Yup, I've played MP3s (and internet streams) with the default bitmap slides and never had a problem with any of the firmware versions. This is with HD browser mode (except for internet audio). TV is calibrated at ~4% overscan.

Just to clarify,
I'm only seeing the shredding issue with images.
I have not seen any similar issues with video.

I'm sure it can be solved with software, I expect that the blanking time is just a little bit off or tight from the player and our Mitsubishi TVs can be sensitive to it.

Did you ever get this to work? I tried different selections for slideshow transitions, but all I ever saw was the "fade out-fade in".

I notice that the slideshow transition options are gone from the current version of the Momitsu server, so I wonder if it was ever working in the first place.

GoingHD
02-10-05, 12:03 PM
No I haven't tried the Momitsu software yet.

I think I read that the Momitsu software can adjust the image via manipulating the front porch, back porch, pixel timings, etc. If so, this is probably the proper way to correct this issue.

[Speculation]
I can only guess as to why fading images in and out causes the video timings to be modified.
One guess is the fading is causing a timing drift which our sets don't like. So adjusting the video timing might not help, unless you can keep the timing "more" stable throughout the fading transition.
Another guess is that the buffer they use to perform the image transformation does not conform in some way to the original images or is sent via another path causing something to happen to the output. Like the image extends into the blanking time. But if this was the case, I would expect more people would have problems.

sorry it took so long to test this.
I have a Mits WS-65908 with the shredding/distortion problems when transitioning between photos during a slide show, when playing music, and while playing some DVDs in 1080i mode.

I hooked up the player to a VIZIO P42 HD PLASMA TV and it worked perfictly I tested at all modes 480i - 1080i with no problems.so it looks like it is a Mits specific problem in my opinion.

also I just picked up a Roku HD1000 and It does slide shows of photos with no problems on the mits in 1080i mode. I will test some DVD's on it as soon as I get the time to rip some to my server.

I have a Mitsubishi 65 inch and also experiencing the banding/smearing effect on photos and playback of mp3s. I also get flickering on bright photos and bright movie scences.. almost like it's trying to sync. I called support and they said that engineers are working on it and hopefully will be fix in the future firmware. Apparently there's another brand of TVs that are experiencing this same problem.

btw, everything worked just fine when I tested on a Sony lcd tv.

I also have a RokuHD1000 and have no issues during a slide show on my Mitsubishi. I also have another HD-DVD upconverting player that can do slide shows without any issue, but I can't remember if it was actually showing pictures in HD. I never use that player anymore. Voom box, PCs, etc don't have the same issue at 1080i.

So far the Linkplayer is the only HD device that does this on my Mitsubishi.

I don't think fixed pixel displays like LCD and DLPs would have the same issue, I expect their timings are more flexible and could handle this.

Yes it will.

It will play 2Ch AAC-LC (Low Complexity) audio streams that have been muxed into the MP4 container. But unfortunately not 2Ch AAC-LC audio streams that have been muxed into the .M4A container (iTunes) or elementary .AAC streams.

Unless a recent firmware update has corrected this now.

I spoke with iodata a few days ago and gave them the serial number on my Avel linkplayer and my model of Mitsubishi (WS65819) regarding the screen instability on bright scenes in 1080i.

They said engineering is looking into it and they hope to possibly fix it in a future firmware upgrade.

It sounds like it would be helpful to them to hear from those of us out there having the problem and which model TVs we have. Also, the more people let them know, the more of a priority this will be for their engineering department.

So - I finally did it - I bought myself the LinkPlayer2 - I drove to their San Jose office (they do not do retail - have to buy via online store or DigitalConnection) - almost got down on my knees and pleaded - they were very nice and sold me one.

I'm impressed - its played almost every file I threw at it (it choked only on one - a WMV9HD 1080i) but all the others at 720p - DivXHD, XVID-HD, WMV9HD - great video - I'm loving it. Thanks Kermee!!!

I bet the WMV9HD file that the player choked on was containing DRM. Check it out. I personally had not found a single WMV9HD file (even the 1080p ones in true 1920x1080 res) that would not play properly.

hey guys,

Long time lurker here. Got my LP2 today, and have it all hooked up. So far so good. FW update went fine. Software install was no problem. Network setup was also a breeze. Spent a little time messing with the various resolution settings and settled on 720p as the best looking to my eyes. I'm running a 30" widescreen sanyo CRT TV that upconverts 720 to 1080i. Seems that my TV does a better job of upscaling, as the picture was noticeably better than letting the LP2 do it. No problems playing DVD rips to 1 large .vob containing movie and AC3 over wired network. MP3's work fine as do .jpegs. DVD's from the tray are fine, although I do notice the loud drive. I guess I'll run to CC and pick up a replacement as per your posts.
Only one little quirk that I have found so far. The menu screen and anything played from the network (.vob) seem to be slightly off center on my screen. I can see a small amount of unused space down the right side of me screen. This does not happen with DVDs played from the tray. I'm using the D4 to Comp. cable from Iodata. anyone else notice this?

Thanks to everyone that has offered their experiences on this thread. I'll continue to post my findings as I go through the motions with this player.

I bought a used AveLink IOData player from a nitwit who "forgot" to put the remote in the package! Hopefully he still has it and can send it...

BUT: I need to know if the remote coding of this player is similar to any of the "big brands", i.e. Yamaha, Sony, Philips, Denon, H/K etc... In that case I could program my programmable remote for it.
I need to get in to the setup and to navigate in DVD-menues goddamit.

Pleeease... Does anyone know??? :(

Let me rephrase my question:

Is there any reason to hope that any multi-remote with preset codes for many different brands will include codes for the basic operations of this player?
For example a Philips RU760 or some other remote? In that case I could buy one that has lots of preset codes for DVD-players and then try everyone of them.

I went through all the presets on my DENON remote (not that many, since it's quite old) and none worked.

I have asked the IO-Data support in vain.

Is there any reason to believe that the AVeLINK player uses the same codes as for example Momitsu, Yamakawa or some other "small" Asian brand?

Will it suffice if I get access to the basic operations (like Setup, Menu, Navigation...) or are there very specific buttons on the players remote that are cruxial for its operation?

mikemav
03-03-05, 06:38 AM
I believe Harmony remote (now part of Logitech) has the codes in their database. Do you have access to one of those remotes? The 680 and 688 are very nice and pretty cheap for a full featured universal (at least here in the states.) If you had one, you would just set up the devices (including the I-O player) in their web page, and then download the configuration into your remote w/ USB.

There may be codes someone could share from a Pronto if you have access to one of those. Check in this thread or at RemoteCentral.com's device database.

I do not know if the player shares any other manufacturer's standard codes. Good luck!

Hi Bill,

The high-def/res player market is still very young. I-O DATA was the first manufacturer to release players. Other manufacturers have promised players but then held them back (KISS, were are you?).

It would be useful to get a response from Sigma as to who has bought/tested their EM8620 chip-sets.... but I very much doubt they will.

Even Sony, with their proposed VGP-MR100, looks to be getting in on the "media streaming" act: -

Hi!

I've gotten a remote that works with this player... But, maybe I've misunderstood a few things about this player... I have several questions:

1. Playback of HD-content (.TS, WM9) of a DVD-R isn't supposed to work, or what? It breaks up and stutters for me.

2. How do I get .TS-playback from the Momitsu server program (latest version I believe). The screen just turns black and no sound..!?

3. Doesn't this player handle PAL at all? When I try to play a PAL .VOB or commercial DVD I get very jerky video and audio drop-outs.

4. Is there no way to install an American firmware in a Japanese player (which I have)? I'd really like to have English texts instead of Japanese. :o

As of now, the only things that work for me is XviD-playback from the Momitsu server and commercial NTSC DVDs.

I have the player connected to a Netgear router via wire and there seems to be no networking issues to solve. The player and the Netgear found eacg other immediately.

arioch,

did you try to use Linkserver and or Advanced Server? I believe I read over at the io-data forum, that the Momitsu server did not support .ts files.
I know for sure that .ts files works with these.
I haven't played with PAL VOBs so can't say how well they work. I do have a couple of PAL DVDs laying around, I'll check how well they work for me.
I do have the US version though.

Well, I changed to the AvelLink server, but it doesn't seem to help.
One thing... Browsing with the player on the server is really slow. It takes several (2-4) seconds to enter a folder. Is that normal?

:)

Does it stutter bad with .ts files played from the HD too, or just from a DVD-R on the PC? With HD based .ts files, I have never had any issues, but at the same time, since seek (fast forward and so forth) is currently not supported, I haven't watched a lot of .ts files, only checked that they work.

I did check a PAL VOB from off the HD. Bad stutter from both Momitsu and Advanced Server, so I have the same issue with those. Apparently not supported. PAL based XVID files plays fine though.

What firmware version do You have?

Absolutely no TS-files show on screen at all for me. Just black... A HD-XviD sample that I have does show and play very well though. Much lower bitrate in those though...

New firmaware problem for me.

Bad stutter on .vob over wired network. Rolled back FW and all is fine again.

Interesting - I have the standalone unit (built in 802.11g, no DVD player) - it seems that the firmware in this unit is more advanced than the unit being discussed here as I already have NTP, and other features that people have mentioned.

Thanks to all for making this thread so valuable.

Hey guys,

I pulled the trigger on this player yesterday. When the unit ships to me, will it have older firmware, or this new firmware you folks are reporting as buggy?

I just got my player two day ago and it comes with an older firmware. You can choose to keep upgrading the firmware to just before the latest version. I have not loaded the March 4th firmware because of the problems people are reporting.

My question would be, what is the best firmware version for TS playback? I am getting quite a bit of stuttering with my recordings. I don't know if is because I have edited these files using HDTVtoMPEG2 or some other reason.

I love this thing as a DVD server. Definately worth the money.

I'm not sure what version of the firmware I have. Couldn't find anything in the setup which tells you which version is currently installed. But if I check for an upgrade, the Feb. 4 firmware comes up. I believe I have a January firmware.

The TS playback issue is a must for me as well. The whole idea behind me getting one of these was to grab a myHD-130 card so I can record OTA HDTV/DTV and stream it back to this device.

Perhaps someone in here can weigh in on the right firmware to use for TS playback.

Actually the Feb 4, 2005 release works best for me for TS playback. The March 4th release does not.

I've just had my Linkplayer for a few days, but got it primarily as a playback source for TS captures made with the R5000. I've had flawless playback of all TS captures that I've tried, which included sampling over 100 different files and watching several shows from beginning to end. Caution -- if you pause, it is sometimes difficult to get the audio to start up again. I would guess that once they get the FF and REW to work for TS captures, it may be easier to get the audio to start after a pause.

My only other major issue is that TS captures which are on DVD stutter terribly with the built in loader. I just may consider changing it out for the Liteon 167T described earlier.

No way of dl:ing that firmware to the player if the rollback is to a later version, is there? If one has passed the one after that - then there is no chance of getting it right - right?
Is the only way of upgrading through their server? No downloadable FWs?

The Feb 04 firmware: 04-91-050127-02-IOD-234-000 while as Irgaac noted, not as good as the previous version for TS playback, nonetheless solved some important issues, including SPDIF audio playback with a number of audio/video receivers. It also solved the problem on DVD playback of the audio sometimes not starting up when the video does, and audio "pops" starting up after a pause.

Hit pause then play again and the file will play, it may stutter for a sec as it catches up to the buffer but it will usually play.

Oh... Ok, I'll try that later.
If that's a common issue, then maybe IO-data should see to it that the next firmware simply pauses and then plays any .TS-file that is loaded? :)

Another question:
The User Guide states that 12 MBps is maximum for .TS-files over wired LAN and 10 MBps for .TS over DVD-R. Doesn't this mean that the player really shouldn't be able to play HD .TS files, but only SD (standard definition) .TS files? An HD .TS-file could easily exceed 15 MBps.

The install was real simple. The only trick is to make sure the tray smoothly opens and closes through the opening on the Linkplayer, once the faceplate is changed. If it has too much friction, the tray will close and then open. I used some velcro to position it where it had to be. Works like a charm. Thanks again, Kermee.

The player itself is way under specced compared to what the Sigma chip is capable of. You can pretty much throw anything at it and it will play, but I think IO-Data left themselves some wiggle room if they can't get the firmware up to snuff.

I've never been able to get my TS files to play, but they come from a JVC GR-HD1 720p camcorder, supposedly supported...

Anyway, they DO play beautifully if I strip away the TS container, and play them as raw 1280x720 mpeg2 PS 18.5 mb/s. This can be done with VLC (which is free), or Womble MPG Video Wizard, which I use to add voice-overs. Either way, no re-encoding. The process is fast and lossless and I can play the native stream on the LinkPlayer.

Others attempting TS playback have achieved success, more or less, some perfectly, others with or without sound playback accompaniment etc.

But the last two firmware upgrades as reported by those who were able to playback TS, have apparently harmed the functionality of it, either introducing stutters, or failing TS playback altogether on some files that played without problem previously.

I have .ts files captured from both a Fusion 3 card and from the Moto 62XX box using firewire.
.ts files from both sources plays fine on my linkplayer, but I generally find the lack of FF/REW annoying enough, that I usually convert to XVID before watching.

And after reading the above comments, I think I'll stick with this version!

Mopar, I tried to post a clip in native PS but I don't have enough bandwidth or storage with the server, and only a pitiful dial-up account.

What I did, is compress it for you to WMV-HD, 1280x720p with a solid bit rate, (6492 kbs) that is virtually indistinguishable from the source. That way, you can view the apparent native quality of the stream, with the expectation that you should be able to achieve the same quality with Xvid, or even go smaller on the file size to your satisfaction.

The source file was 3 times larger than the WMV-HD clip, as was the bit-rate.

The file size is 5mb. You can download it here (http://vsdrives.com/movies/Tumble.wmv), and play it directly on your LinkPlayer.

Just "right click" on the link, then "save target as" to download to your PC.

About "HD Browsing":
It also makes the browsing... Well... Uhmmm... HD. ;)
It's the same effect as if You switch to a higher resolution in Your computer - You can see more stuff on screen without having to scroll. Higher resolution desktop...
Nice feature, but I' rather see that .TS-files can be played.

I used HDTV2MPEG2 (very fast conversion) to create MPEG2 from some .TS-clips yesterday and the played magnifically well!!! :) Both sound and picture and no stuttering! :D
Come to think of it now... Maybe I don't have to turn of HD Browsing when playing HD MPEG2:s!? I'll have to try that later. Since .TS:s are unacceptable due to the garbled sound, I'm only going to play MPEG2 versions of them for a while anyhow.

Must say that the highest quality .TS/HD-MPEG2 that I tried on this player by far surpasses all HD XviD/DivX and WM9 I've seen. Much higher level of detail and a more natural looking picture quality! Of course it could depend on the source material and many other things but still...

I have a D-VHS-deck also, but the Avelink player gives an even more sharp and detailed picture, maybe due to the DVI...

Beginning to really like this player now. :)

How fast is this process? Does VLC produce new files or edit the existing ones?
With HDTV2MPEG2 the conversion takes about 2/3 of the films length in time on a really slow computer (PII 450 MHz), I suppose it will go much faster on my 1.8 GHz 'puter, but since I have the AVeLINK server and all the files on the 450 MHz system I guess I'll be using that system most of the time...
There is one big advantage with using HDTV2MPEG2 for me: It also joins many .TS-files into larger MPEG2 clips - can VLC do that?

After cutting commercials out and then finding that the file is no longer playable, I stopped that practice. I just use HDTVtoMPEG2 to cut out lead in (prior to the show's start) and to get a clean end.

Try videoredo www.videoredo.com (http://www.videoredo.com) to edit commercials from your TS files. It has helped me to recover many of my unplayable files. It's a great program, but only outputs PS files. They have a 30 trial version (get the latest BETA release in the forum for editting TS files, V324 or newer), but it is well worth the registration fee. Dan provides the best support for any program I have ever encountered, ususally corrects any issues you find within a day or two.

Run any previously edited file through it's QSF (Quick Stream Fix) to make your file compliant. It is very fast and has always made the file playable for me. However, the QSF feature still has issues with a few TS files I have. The V324 release is expected to correct it. Dan R. made a correction for it this morning, and I have yet to test it out!

If you register you can also gain access to the AD dective beta feature, which automatically detects commercials in your files.

For anyone have issues with ANY TS/PS file, try running it through QSF. It is suppose to make the frame headers compliant and also correct timing errors. So it should not affect the actual data. For those with camcoder file issues, try running your file through QSF.

I tried the VideoReDo beta but it just would crash on files or just disappeared (ungraceful error handling). Unfortunately many of these thing seems like hacks that could use a rewrite (or two or three :) ). In some cases I would suspect DLL conflicts too like the one loaded in memory is not the one the developer used and he doesn't know the "trick." When someone mentioned MovieLink in one of these Linkplayer thread I downloaded their software and watched with horror as it placed a MFC71.dll in my System32 directory. MS does not want developers to do that! Instead they want you to place the DLLs in your program directory. That can be one source of problems.

The Fusion III software comes with its own converter and TS editor which took a little getting used to. The interesting thing is that they make the audio stream a private stream on their PS file so Dr. DivX thinks there is no audio and you have to demux the file to an AC3 file. I think I'll write a little utility to change that PID from Private. I have also found that some of the TS when loaded into Dr. DivX are shown as 29.97 fps and when converted to PS are 23.97. When the TS streams are used for encoding the motion can be jumpy but smooth with the PS stream.

I haven't tried the latest Womble yet.

A fatal bug was introduced into VideoRedo when accessing files and should be corrected today. Dan just reported that the correction will appear in v344.

Don't forget that the software you are testing is beta. Dan has at points introduced new bugs, but the issue has absolutely nothing to do with dll loading. I would agree VRD does not handle exceptions well when problems arise. It is still a work in progress, with TS support being added fairly recently. But the nice thing is, even as a trial user you can upload problematic files on the videoredo FTP server and Dan makes an exceptional effort to correct it quickly.

Unfortunately the TS software is not really well supported in the "released" packages (I think v320 has TS support). TS support is basically only found in the beta software. However, I have yet to find a program that corrects the issues other programs introduce the way VRD does. VRD has it's flaws and is still early in its development. But I've found very few TS files that it can't work with. It will work with files other programs just refuse to touch or will corrupt the output after using it. VRD also is able to save more frames from corrupted TS files and files from my TIVO than any other program.

I've tried Womble as well. I think in some ways it is better, however, it has corrupted files for me. I have yet to find a TS file that VRD has corrupted.

I would recommend either program, but my nod still goes to VRD.

If anything, if you have a MPEG2 TS/PS file of any type that does not seem to work, skips, drops frames, or other weird anomalies on the Linkplayer, try running the file through VRD QSF.

I cut developers a lot of slack because I am a developer myself. Before I would even post to his board though I wanted to do a more thorough search on crashes. But the current release version (not the beta) also crashed on launch. It was the beta that stayed up but crash later doing other things like QSF. I'll check for the patch.

i am interested in getting the UDHL network hard disk that iodata offers but it is a little expensive. Is it possible to use other netwrok hard disk? How hard would it be to install the software onto the network hard disk to make it like the iodata network hard disc?

I've read all of this topic about the AVel2, and if I understand right, it will NOT play a whole DVD movie ripped to a HD using DVDDecryptor in file mode. Is this correct? Right now I use an HTPC to play them, and of course that works fine, with menus and everything. Anybody know of a inexpensive way to be able to play the whole DVD (including menu's)? I thought at first glance that this player was the answer, as opposed to building an HTPC for each TV (what a pain).

Thanks for you help,

tin,

apperantly it has something to do with the license the manufactures need from the DVD Forum. They don't grant, or make it cost prohibitive enough, so that the manufactures are not able to include network played DVDs.
The linkplayer2 (and other players) do support VOB playing though, but like you said, no menus there.

Apparently there has been an update of the japanese firmware! :D
Suddenly both .TS and .PS in HD-resolutions play just brilliantly - with Dolby Digital sound! :D
Now my player does all the things I wanted it to do.
Arigato IO-Data Nihon! ;) :)

Would it, or could it be possible to use daemon tools to trick the Link Player into thinking it was coming from an actual dvd? If I did DVDDecryptor in ISO mode, then Daemon could mount it as a drive. Or am I way off base here?? Not even sure if the LinkPlayer is capable of playing a DVD remotely.

I sure hope this makes it to the US version soon. I am anxiously awaiting reliable TS playback. Thanks for the update.

The US version has reliable playback of TS files. It's just that we can't FF or REW and if you pause, there's a good chance of losing the audio track. Wonder if the Japanese version has FF and REW.

From what I can gather here, that is not true for most. And I can definitely say that it is not true with the Macintosh server sw... NONE of my transport streams play correctly now. I am not even using the new firmware, which was even worse...

I'll qualify my previous comment by saying the March 4th firmware update renders playing of TS captures almost impossible. I had to rollback to the Feb 4th update. I suppose some users are having worse success than others. Hopefully I-O Data will provide us a suitable firmware release shortly.

I just picked up one these players today and I also had trouble playing back HD with the latest firmware. Mind you, I use PS files and not TS but the latest firmware would not play back any of my HDTV captures.

For the most part, I like the unit. It allows me to watch OTA HDTV streams from my PC without the need for a HTPC in my TV room.

My biggest annoyance has to be with the remote. This remote is the worst hunk of crap I have used in years!! Slow, unresponsive, and sometimes taking multiple presses to get it to respond. I tried replacing the batteries but the results were the same. Considering the DVD player is exposed and less than 7-8 feet directly in front of me, this is either a flaw of the IR receiver, the firmware or the remote.

My Jap. player does fast forward, but I can't guarrantee that the audio isn't out of sync. Only tried it a couple of times... I'll test it more carefully tonight. (It's a quarter to nine in the morning here in Sweden now. :))

Hopefully someone on here can give me a hand with a problem I am having. I just setup my link player over the weekend and today I tried playing back my first HD capture from my myHD MDP-130 card. I captured the HD content as a Transport Stream (.tp file) and renamed it to a .ts file and played it with the Linkplayer. The audio was off and there was this strange line across the middle of the screen that was not present when I played the file back on my computer.

Any ideas?

Bill,

Try turning off the HD browser mode in the setup menu.

Well, I will try that if it will help with the audio problems. The line went away when I applied the Feb 4th Firmware.

Ok, the audio problem still exists, but isnt as bad now as it was before the Feb 4th firmware. The HD browser mode doesnt seem to make any difference at all.

I tax my Dlink router pretty hard and I am running the host PC over 108 Mbps Super G wireless. DVD VOB files play back with no issues, no audio or video drops and might I add -- THEY LOOK AMAZING compared to my old prog-scan DVD player.

Once I solve this audio problem with TS files, this will be the coolest addition to my home theater/networking environment since I moved to Super G wireless. :)

I have a Mits WS-65908 with the shredding/distortion problems when transitioning between photos during a slide show, when playing music, and while playing some DVDs in 1080i mode.

Has the problem with slideshows on Mits been fixed yet?

Flipflop's modified Wizd server fixed the slideshow problem for my mits tv.

Not on my Mits. Can't view photos and any bright scenes on videos viewed in 1080i cause my set to start flashing.

If your considering buying one, and you own a Mits rear projector, I would recommend against it.

Are you trying to play QAM TP streams from you 130 or OTA ATSC?

For ATSC OTA I use an MDP-120 and I turn most of my TP files into HD Vobs using HDTVtoMPEG2 (version 7) after I have used HDTVtoMPEG2 version 11.beta to strip out sub-streams I don't want and to remove commercials. After that the HD VOBS usually play perfect (I am still using Feb firmware 1/27).

Paul:
When you create your "vobs" with HDTVtoMPEG2, what format do you select? mpeg, or ts? Do you actually name the files ".vob"? (or .mpg or .ts?)

I have been using ts format, but I've been having problems at all the edit points (where the commercials have been cut out.) My workaround is to make multiple clips, and play them in sequence. Not optimal, but it works. Have you encountered this "edit-point" problem as well?

Ok... I've investigated some more:

- Watched a whole 1080i movie (about 1 h 40 minutes) converted from .TS to .MPEG whithout a single glitch or other problem. :D
- Fast forwarding in a 1080i MPEG2 movie works fine. Audio synch is perfect when pressing play. :) Pausing and playing again also works fine.
- Fast forwarding in .TS files seems to be disabled in the latest Japanese F/W which I have! The OSD states "INVALID" when I press FFW during a .TS playback.

So I guess IO-Data is well aware of the problem with FFW:ing in TS-files.

I must say that this player does a much better job with HD-files than my DVHS-player which haven't played a single movie without glitches for me.
Also, the PQ via DVI is better than the DHVS:es analog component.
I also would like to repeat that the best material in .TS or converted to MPEG2 from .TS has much better PQ than any WMV or AVI that I have gotten my hands on.

One thing that doesn't work on my player: I downloaded a demo from ESPN in 720p and almost 30 Mbps(!) bitrate. That clip didn't play properly either as .TS or MPEG2. I tried that clip via wired LAN, is there any reason to believe that it would play better from a disc?
