I think it will be a long time until we see ...if ever...any new modules for this receiver. Additionally I believe Onkyo will make us drag the unit into a dealer to do any module upgrades. So I've decided to sell my unit and put it up for sale under the audio gear for sale listing on the forum. If it doesn't sell at that price, I'll go lower.

they like to make a showing at cedia so if
its new it will probably be there.
no avr as of date has 1.3 that probably is
the major holdup and just a few have hd
radio although i would like to see rds since
dj's talk about everything but artist and song.

Does anyone have an HD-DVD player hooked up via HDMI through their TX-NR1000? I have the player going through the AVR to a 60 inch Sony SXRD & I keep getting different error messages (HDMI ERROR 0 or 1) It seems like the player & receiver can't seem to make the digital "handshake". This sucks, I have to bypass the receiver & hook up the player straight to the HDTV

Hey Joe,
please try & see what happens...when I think about not being able to go through the receiver for this, I get really annoyed...i'm thinking the problem is most likely the player & not the receiver since I have other HDMI devices that pass through flawlessly...

Which component of the three is producing this error message?

the Onkyo is the cause for it, I believe...the HD-DVD player is very, very tempermental to say the least...I have 2 (A1 & XA1) & had issues hooking up both...I cannot get the player to work through the receiver at all...it works fine when I bypass it, though...I swapped cables, tried to power it off/on to get it to make the connection to no avail...

egcarter
04-20-06, 05:35 PM
Does this error appear on the receiver's front panel? Or are you seeing it on the HD-DVD player panel or your Sony display? I've never heard of that error message from the receiver before...I know there's an HDMI "Resolution Error" that can appear on the front panel of the receiver.

Just for kicks, why don't you try this and see what happens:

Push and hold the "Video1" button on the receiver, then push the "Setup" button, then release both buttons.

"DVI Output: Auto" will be displayed.
Use the right scroll wheel to select "DVI Output: On" to enter a forced mode.

See if you get a picture now.

If that doesn't work, change it back to "DVI Output: Auto".

This changes the HDMI handshaking protocol to ignore the resolution information being passed.

Probably still 2x1. It's a real estate issue. The ports must be a certain distance apart to support the HDMI cables' connections and the cards have a fixed height, so there's not much room to add any other ports.

Is there a possibility that one of the other cards can be replaced with an HDMI card?

Why the move to 1.2 instead of 1.3?

Will I be able to upgrade my unit without hiring a over to get it to a shop? ;)

I dunno what their policies will be. I'm an Integra dealer, not an Onkyo one. It's very easy to change cards in these things. A little allen wrench to unlock...slide it out...slide another in...lock with the wrench. Voila.

How do you know that the 1000 is the problem? It's been my HDMI experience that it's sometimes impossible for the user to tell just which component in the chain is the issue.

It could be any of them (source, AVR, display)

If it is any single components fault then blame HDMI. With all the different types its like pulling and praying just to get a good hand shake....

One big HDMI issue (it affected all of the HDMI cable boxes from SA and Motorola) was that they do not always enable repeaters in their HDMI firmware. An AVR with HDMI handling in it is a repeater, not a switch. So none of the cable boxes would work with an AVR until the set top box manufacturers updated their firmware to enable that. That didn't happen until an engineer with SA actually had an AVR with HDMI and discovered that it wouldn't work! Denon then provided Motorola with an HDMI AVR so that they could fix their problem, too.

After reading an article on 1.3, I am not 100% sure what it brings to the table. What does the 1.3 spec have that the 1.2 doesn't?

Have you heard of there will be a software update to enable decoding the new digital sound formats?

Thanks

I think you will find that it will probably take a lot more than just a software upgrade to do that, and that it will require another hardware upgrade instead.

It will require a new HDMI card to receive the appropriate bitstreams, but hopefully the DSPs are capable of decoding the bitstreams with just a software upgrade. Otherwise I think it would mean a whole new unit because I don't believe the DSPs are upgradable.

I am sure they planned ahead for the DSPs. Let's hope so anyway. That would be a major pain to have to ship the unit in for a new card. I think they should ship a firmware disc with the card so you can easily manage switching them.

If any of you receive W.S.R. read the article from Monster regarding HDMI compatabitity issues. They lay it pretty much on the line as a lack of dialog between manufacturers. Their solution is to be the certifing entity that ensures compatability between components. I say I'm tired of jumping through hoops trying to make things work. I'm also disapppointed in Onkyo for not being proactive in these issues. They have been a smart, quality oriented company that has been ahead of the curve in foreseeing the future of technology to come. Witness the TX -SV919THX. I bought the first product they ever sold in the U.S., the A1 an integrated amp. I love Onkyo and have always recommended them to others. I feel very let down.

To Egcarter: I ordered the H.D. DVD Toshiba player. I was looking to send the sound out by way of the HDMI connection but it's not supported since it's only 1.1 and 1.3 is needed. Which means I need both a hardware and software upgrade. I don't mind paying for the hardware but I do mind Onkyo not doing anything or advising on their website an upgrade path and availability dates. Why don't they H.D. radio available yet? Why don't they have the new codecs for dolby and dts ready for download. It's not like they haven't had time to fabricate an integration into the receiver since using a card system is supposed to make upgradeability simple. They have plenty of room in the back to use. They wasted it on analog connections that are never going to be used especially, by people who spent money for this product. Hense, there are higher expectations.

The HDMI card definitely needs to be replaced to support the transfer of the raw bitstream for the new codecs.

I'm still not sure that any new DSPs would be required to do the decoding. Actually I think the Toshiba HD-DVD players are using the same type of SHARC DSPs for decoding that are in the Onkyo receiver.

It's not HDMI 1.1, it's 1.0. Remember, this product has been shipping for about 1.5 years now. The product was designed to work best with their fab DVD player, with which you use iLink for the audio.

NO ONE has HDMI 1.3 at this time. The spec is NOT COMPLETE...no chipsets until late Summer at the earliest!!!

NO ONE has DD+ or DTS-HD support at this time. It's not going to just be a codec download for ANYONE.

menexxus,

Select VIDEO2 on the receiver and go into SETUP. On the INPUT SETUP selection, choose VIDEO ASSIGN. Under COMPONENT VIDEO, it should have whichever physical component input jacks you are using (RCA1,2 or 3). Scroll down to HDMI...change that setting to VIDEO.

Now the receiver will transcode the component video on that selected set of jacks to HDMI for output.

Toshiba own a good size chunk of Onkyo and I suspect that is why Onkyo is on the HD DVD forum. Since Onkyo and Integra always seem to release a whole package from source to amplifier I cant see them releasing an upgrade to decode the new audio formats before they have a source that can handle those formats. I'm still patiently awaiting the DAB module for Europe that was supposed to be released late last year.

I have a DTR-10.5 in my new theater and just received my Toshiba HD-X1.

My DTR-10.5's HDMI output goes to my Sony SDRX "Ruby" projector.

I found that the HD-X1 works great.

My only beef is that I assumed this player could natively output 1080p. I cannot, it only supports 480p, 720p, and 1080i. So I still have nothing that truely excercises my Ruby.

But the DTR-10.5 has worked very well for me so far (about a month).

to be completely honest, if these cards ever see the light of day i'll be shocked...it seems like for about a year & a half these new cards are always a couple months off...when i'm listening to XM through the Onkyo & I can use my HD-DVD player through the Onkyo via HDMI, i'll believe it then...until then, i'll continue to feel taken advantage of buying a product touted as future proof, but the company hasn't supported it like it should...don't get me wrong, I love the receiver...I had a Yamaha RX-Z1 before getting the Onkyo, so it had some pretty big shoes to fill in my system & it has performed as advertised...I just want more, I had to pick up a Monoprice HDMI switcher so when Blu-ray dropped, I would be able to use it through HDMI on my SXRD...I didn't appreciate having to buy that, but I really didn't appreciate my Toshiba not working through the AVR's HDMI connections even less...

I have received the same availabilty timeframe on the new cards for the past few months...nothing has changed.

What HDMI problems are you experiencing?

What do you feel that they should have done to "support it like it should?"

I applaud them waiting until the HDMI situation had settled down somewhat. They will still have to have a follow-on card next year to support HDMI 1.3.

I have never had an HDMI compatibility issue turn out to be the receiver; it's always been one of the other components in the chain. And just plugging the video source directly into the video display and having it work OK doesn't mean that when it goes thru the AVR and doesn't work that the issue isn't with the source or display!

Also remember, it's HDMI 1.0, not a higher rev...this was the first HDMI switching AVR out there.

Are you saying that Onkyo hasn't said in the past that a new upgrade card (whether it be HDMI, XM, etc) is coming out? That this is the 1st time? That's definitely not my experience...when I 1st got my Onkyo, I called up & asked about the XM card...I was told it'll be out "in the next couple of months..." nothing more specific would be given...well, that was well over a year ago...as far HDMI, i'm well aware that it's only v1.0...for switching my Oppo or SA 8300 DVR, it's fine...I can't run my HD-DVD player through it via HDMI cause there hasn't been an update card available...w/Blu-ray coming out in the next month, that will be my next problem...I feel that Onkyo should've made a v1.1 HDMI card & XM card available LONG BEFORE NOW...not wait & then do a v1.2 or 1.3 or whatever, just support the damn receiver, Onkyo!! I don't like the idea that you can go get a low-end ONkyo shelf system that is XM capable...yet, my $5,000 receiver can't do that...Net-Tune is a joke, buggiest software ever...it makes iTunes look perfect in comparison...personally, I don't applaud them for waiting...they played it safe is all...IF they make these cards available, i'll be 1st in line to get them...like I said, i'll believe it when i'm using them & not a second before...

As an Integra dealer (and product owner myself), I disagree with you. We have to support these things and I'm glad they didn't come out with an updated HDMI card last year with all of the HDMI headaches out there (as you may have heard and experienced). After all, these flagship AVR's were designed to mate with their flagship DVD player. Use iLink for audio and HDMI for video. Works great.

I don't know what someone at Onkyo told you, but as I have reported on this board since last Fall, I was informed at CEDIA Expo last September by the guy who designed the product "roadmaps" that the new HDMI card was probably nearly a year away (this is for Integra, rather than Onkyo...but it should also apply, more or less).

And with any manufacturer, they do not replace the entire product line at once. They are introduced in stages. Note that there still is no replacement for the DTR-8.4 (or Onkyo TX-SR901), so there's a huge hole in the AVR line...

My NetTune works just fine, actually. I have about 10,000 tracks on a server and the AVR plays them like a charm. The interface isn't great, but no one else had been offering any such functionality in an AVR until very recently.

I am far less happy with IRadio, and I bet that it will disappear from the AVR line in the future. That functionality just transfer to the new Media Center PC that Integra ships in June. (It also has a NetTune Central plug-in for MS Windows XP Media Center Edition so it will function as a NetTune server).

If HD DVD/Blu players are released with I-Link outputs then there is no real advantage to having HDMI any higher than 1.0. I-Link could carry all HD muisic formats, has been approved by the AACS and can daisy chain a load of units together. Video could then be dealt with by HDMI 1.0 or a seperate video processor since higher HDMI versions dont offer any video advantages AFAIK.

Has anyone used more than two iLink devices at a time with the NR1000?

Is it even possible? If so, what would one have to do, daisy chain the devices?

Thanks

Johnla
05-18-06, 03:04 AM
Probably because i-link would be too easy of a solution, but it's also one that would not help promote new sales of new all the HDMI equipped HD/BR DVD players, AVR's and TV sets. They seem to rather prefer just playing games with getting people to buy into numerous revisions of HDMI, instead of using proven existing technology that actually would work well.

To all those moaning about Onkyo/IR not producing a new HDMI module - what sense does it make to release a product which is out of date before it is actually released!
The delays are imho due to circumstances beyond Onkyo's control, mainly the ever changing HDMI specs.
I am sure at the right time Onkyo will release an upgrade HDMI module but right now there would seem to be little point.

You couldn't be further from the truth...what sense does it make? Are you suggesting that Onkyo waits til v1.3 is ready? Iwould like the upgrade while im still reasonably young...Do you own anything that won't work w/v1.0 (ie HD-DVD players, etc) cause if you did, I highly doubt you would think that...this receiver has been available for about 2 years & THERE HASN'T BEEN 1 HDMI UPGRADE YET (whether it would be v1.1 or even 3 in 1 out HDMI)
Not to get into anything, but maybe just maybe you should slow your roll about people moaning about Onkyo...check out the name of this forum you posted in...it's an owner's thread for people that have this particular receiver, do you own one or know anyone that does? I was just curious...

In fact there have been no upgrades ( cards ) at all, Onkyo's upgrades record since the release of the receiver in 2004 is a perfect 0.

Speaking about false advertising: Onkyo had promised to upgrade their previous generation flagships - the Onkyo 989 and Integra 9.1 receivers and the IR RDC-7 processor - to i-Link. As you probably know they didn't keep their promise.

Taken from the IR RDC-7 press release:

'One of the most remarkable features of the Integra Research RDC-7 is its "future-proof" upgradable A/V processor. ... One of the first upgrades is software for a planned IEEE-1394 Firewire interface. The software will support a connector card that plugs into a bay on the back of the RDC-7. Once this is installed, the RDC-7 will have three IEEE-1394 connectors to support a broad range of new technology components. '

Raz,

I don't think that anyone is saying that IR/Onkyo has thus far not followed through with their promise of upgradeability. My only point is that with respect to I-link, they are not the only ones that failed to deliver on their promise. There are some big names in the pre-pro world that failed to deliver the upgrade, that was my point.

IF Onkyo/IR does release a 3 or 4 input version 1.3 HDMI card then I will be happy they waited.

I for one don't need any other cards at the moment so I am happy. I like what Anthem did with their scaler but I don't want to spend that kind of money on a scaler. I already spent a lot of money on my DVD player and $1,700.00 is a lot to spend on what to me would be simply a switch.

I think the major issue is,, ( at least for me..) is to see Onkyo/Integra release ANYTHING public. I mean,, new card,, gr8,, whatever it is,, I don't HAVE to buy it,, Firmware/Sw downloadable through the web ( and used on my own risk)...,,,

As a previous RDC 7.0 and DV-s939 owner and a current DV-SP1000 and RDC 7.1 owner,
I do have had ... and have.. expectations that they should live up to their "talk".

Still, their stuff has been great,, previously, been a krell/classe,etc user,, Integra has still managed to release pre/processor and DVD's that I wanted and couldn't find anything else that I wanted more. But,, looking around today, there is some equipment that sure looks great, and co's like Anthem/SonicFrontiers,, what do yo see when looking at the products on the web.?? Downloads for new software.

I am somewhat stupid that way,, I really like to fix what's NOT broken,
I work with networks, raid, etc,, I allways upgrade,, Beta's preferably (kidding..!)
But, it's like beeing involved, it's like a company fullfilling their promises,
it's a statement that the product is ALIVE.

More or less every month,, new stuff comes out. By definition, new stuff will often surpass what we've allready bought, that's the nature of our intrest.
Buying these machines, we've aimed somewhat higher than the fixed-setup-change every 18months. We WANT more.

Hope Im not getting booring here,, but,, my point is there,, somewhere,, make us PROUD off our choice.. show us that it's not only us but also YOU that's behind these machines...

Agreed. My Denon 3910 already scales and doesn't do 480i over DVI, but I consider that temporary until replacement with a HD DVD or BD or combo player. Beyond switching, the Anthem D2 also provides OSD overlay, something the RDC-7.1 will never do. For me, that's a huge usability factor, that is, to be able to see on-screen overlays of volume, channel and other controls.

An option card must go in a particular slot. You can't just put it anywhere.

Eric

My idea was to cable the 3 Extra HDMI ports from a new HDMI card in the current HDMI card slot. This would mean you could put the additional HDMI ports in any free slot since the additional HDMI connectors would not need a specific connector the mainboard since they would piggy back off the primary HDMI ports.

Craigslue

I happen to have the 10.5 that doesn't have anything in the extra component card slot that I would be happy to fill with a hdmi card, or even a net card slot not in use. Onkyo/Integra just has to decide which slot they would want to use for this purpose and let us decide which cards we want for our upgradeable receivers! :D

05-22-06, 02:36 AM
They could, as a compromise,, do something like Theta Digital did for multi-channel audio,
that is;, a board in the pre/processor and with some "special" cable connect it to an external box which more ports.. ,, I mean,, the logic and controll done from the card but with the HDMI connectors in the box... that way space wouldn't be an issue

AM/FM card is standard on the Onkyo and Integra flavors.

As an Integra dealer, our product (DTR-10.5) is built-to-order for the client. We can configure it as they like. The only Onkyo products we can sell are the lowest end receivers and stuff like the iPod dock and HTIB's.

Since the Onkyo receiver comes fully stocked, I have no idea how they are planning to handle upcoming cards as options. And since lots of Onkyo purchasers seem to buy from nebulous sources that don't support them...

With Integra, yes, we will be able to order new cards for our clients or build-to-order new receivers with the proper mix of cards to configure as wished.

Hi Eric,

thanks for your response. I probably should have explained in more detail what I am trying to do.

I am not trying to watch different sources in my 2 7.1 setups. Just use the amp to switch between rooms. When the amp is set at Main A I see video (component and Svideo) in both rooms and have 7.1 audio in Main A only (as expected).

When I switch to Main B I lose the video but the 7.1 audio switches from MainA to Main B as expected.

As I understand it this amp supports 7.1 switching (same source) and 2 5.1 rooms different sources. The 7.1 switching was unique to this Amp that is why I baught it . I have read a few reviews that mention this feature.

I just cant make it work.

thanks,

What video output are you sending to Room B? You have the choice of Composite or S-Video out for Room B.
You need to Assign the Video Output for Monitor Out "B" (Menu 1-9)

That was true for earlier software but should have been removed by now eg in 1.10. I did send in a bug report (or request for change) about that and 3 month later I received a version labeled 1.09 (but i think it's different than the released 1.09).

Before component and HDMI was turned of as soon as you switched from the A to B speakers now they work (as they should). You should be able to get that firmaware from an athourized dealer or directly from Integra/Onkyo.

Hi all,

I have a question about Multichannel with TX-NR1000:
When I want read a DVD-AUDIO or a SACD with analogic links (form Onkyo DVD-SP800), what is the best listening setup settings ?

In fact 2 choices :
1)
Audio select : Multichannel 1
Audio listening setup : Multichannel

2)
Audio select : Multichannel 1
Audio listening setup : direct or pure audio

Do you know if in one case the signal is downscale ? Or do you think each conversion analog to digital is always done with the highest value (like 192KHz or 176,4 kHz) or with the same value from original or downgrade...
Do you think the signal from analog inputs is always convert in digital ?

I always use the second choice for DVD-A/SACD, I think that it sounds better. When using direct or pure audio there is no signal downscale. When using multichannel the analog inputs are converted to digital and I can hear a little sound compression.

It's right Eric. Why listen only 2 channels of a six channel input ?

The Direct or Pure Audio mode is to listen sound comes directly from the source. If you have six channel source you listen six channel output (if you have all speakers ;) ).
Don't be confused with the stereo mode : you listen only on left speaker , right speaker and sub...

In direct or pure audio a 5.1 source is played as 5.1, I'm not sure why you think that a 5.1 source is played in stereo when using direct or pure audio.

At last... the module I've been bugging Onkyo Europe about for over a year :)

DAB is an early Digital radio system that is common in the UK and parts of Europe and other bits of the world (select areas of Canada too). Sound quality is not that great because it is based on MP2 but for myself and many others in Europe it is the only way we can get reception of local radio stations (FM signal too weak and they dont appear on Satellite or DVB-T).

As I have posted in another thread, Onkyo is still introducing updates for existing products. In Japan last week, they just introduced updated software and firmware for Net-Tune Central for some existing products (not the top of the line ones yet) that introduces support for Windows Media 10, for both the Media Server functions and the Internet Radio.
No word on if/when that will reach the U.S. and the modular product.

The new Integra NVS-7.7 Media Center PC ships in mid-June. It too comes with the Net-Tune Central software, this time written as a Windows Media Center Edition 2005 plug-in. MSRP is $3,000.

The whole thing :)

In Germany we do not get nice deals on b-stock anyway so if I am paying through the nose for my 5000 I might as well also get the board that I otherwise have to pay an additional 500 for when it comes out.

A year ago would have been a good time to get it but now I expect the HDMI board to be out in the not so distant future and I need it - and seeing at how fast Denon releases their upgrades there has to be some reaction by Onkyo.

People that buy these flagships want to be on the cutting edge - Onkyo not having HDMI audio makes it lag behind IMO.

Hi,

it seems more and more that buying components with hopes of them being upgraded in a timely manner is not a very good idea.

I watched more than one product that was bought by many because of promised improvements/upgrades or modularity in general.

Now Onkyo has the most modular AV receiver on the market, but Denon is the company that already has an HDMI upgrade to their flagship that had a vastly superior HDMI section than the Onkyos even before the upgrade.

You are right about that but in my opinion an analog to HDMI transcoder without a scaler is not of much use, as the device that has to do the scaling of the signals can do the transcoding, too.

Frankly I have not much use for both a scaler and a transcoder in a Receiver, but I definitely would like to have an HDMI audio option in addition to the very nice anlaog multichannel capability of the Onkyo.

So let's hope there will be some news from Onkyo with regard to this soon.

The HDMI card de-interlaces the composite/s-video and transcodes to 480p HDMI. Component video is transcoded to HDMI at whatever the input resolution is (min 480p).

The modular AV receivers/prepros were designed to mate with their terrific universal DVD players, which do have a scaler. The Integra and Integra Research versions of the DVD player can also scale external sources, in addition to the DVDs.
Usually I rely on the display to do the scaling, as my SIM2 projector does a very nice job of that.

All audio formats (including SACD and DVD-Audio) are transferred via iLink and video via HDMI. Works like a charm. The current HDMI card will transfer audio to an HDMI-equipped TV set. The forthcoming HDMI card will support HDMI 1.2 and offer full multi-channel HDMI audio connectivity.

Eric

Eric,

thanks for the information, my display does not scale at all so I did not really check this out too much, I consider myself better informed on these features now.

The multichannel capability and usability for everything else but audio via HDMI IMO is second to none with the Onkyo, at least for my needs, and the main reason I want to go with it over its competitors.

I hope you will post here once there is news about the card, it sounds very promising.

Hello, HDMI 1.3 is out and officiel.
Perhaps an new HDMI module for Onkyo TX-NR1000...

New HDMI 1.3 capabilities include:

*Higher speed: HDMI 1.3 increases its single-link bandwidth from 165MHz (4.95 gigabits per second) to 340 MHz (10.2 Gbps) to support the demands of future high definition display devices, such as higher resolutions, Deep Color and high frame rates. In addition, built into the HDMI 1.3 specification is the technical foundation that will let future versions of HDMI reach significantly higher speeds.
*Deep color: HDMI 1.3 supports 30-bit, 36-bit and 48-bit (RGB or YCbCr) color depths, up from the 24-bit depths in previous versions of the HDMI specification.
Lets HDTVs and other displays go from millions of colors to billions of colors
Eliminates on-screen color banding, for smooth tonal transitions and subtle gradations between colors
Enables increased contrast ratio
Can represent many times more shades of gray between black and white. At 30-bit pixel depth, four times more shades of gray would be the minimum, and the typical improvement would be eight times or more

*Broader color space: HDMI 1.3 removes virtually all limits on color selection.
Next-generation “xvYCC” color space supports 1.8 times as many colors as existing
HDTV signals
Lets HDTVs display colors more accurately
Enables displays with more natural and vivid colors

*New mini connector: With small portable devices such as HD camcorders and still cameras demanding seamless connectivity to HDTVs, HDMI 1.3 offers a new, smaller form factor connector option. HDMI connector (http://www.hdmi.org/images/HDMI_andMiniConnector.jpg)
*Lip Sync: Because consumer electronics devices are using increasingly complex digital signal processing to enhance the clarity and detail of the content, synchronization of video and audio in user devices has become a greater challenge and could potentially require complex end-user adjustments. HDMI 1.3 incorporates an automatic audio/video synching capability that allows devices to perform this synchronization automatically with accuracy.
*New lossless audio formats: In addition to HDMI’s current ability to support high-bandwidth uncompressed digital audio and currently-available compressed formats (such as Dolby® Digital and DTS), HDMI 1.3 adds additional support for new, lossless compressed digital audio formats Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™.

We won't see many HDMI 1.3 products until 2007 due to the chipset availability. The new HDMI card is HDMI 1.2 compliant. It's scheduled for late Summer availability.

I don't understand why you guys are interested in HDMI 1.2 when your Onkyo can already do everything HDMI 1.2 can do via its HDMI 1.0 and i-Link cards. The real upgrade is HDMI 1.3, not HDMI 1.2. I myself don't care about HDMI 1.2 at all.

Not to mention that by releasing an HDMI 1.2 card Onkyo might use that as an excuse for not releasing an HDMI 1.3 card.

Doesn't 1.2 do audio as well though. My Onkyo with 1.0 does not do audio... Am I missing something?

Your Onkyo does audio via i-Link - and as far as I know i-Link is better than HDMI for audio. With HDMI 1.2 you will use one HDMI cable for both audio and video. With what you have right now you'll get video via HDMI and audio via i-Link, two cables instead of one, a minor inconvenience. I myself have the IR RDC-7.1 with both i-Link and HDMI and will not get the HDMI 1.2 card, I have no need for it.

These are the cards I would be interested in:

HDMI 1.3 ( might never happen, Onkyo will probably offer HDMI 1.2 as an upgrade but not HDMI 1.3)
HD Radio
Sirius
XM

I haven't seen any suggestion that i-link will ever support the new HD audio codecs. If you're just talking about what's possible in theory, HDMI 1.3 has over 20x the bandwidth of i-Link. The trick is to actually have the standards defined and implemented. I just hope that HDMI can overcome the compatibility issues.

I was using iLINK with my SP1000. It was a great connection for it. Now with newer Hd players coming out that don't have iLINK inputs I am afraid iLINK is becoming obsolete. So now more than ever the audio HDMI card becomes more important...

I've mentioned this before on these forums, I-Link is superior for Audio and there is no reason why it cannot carry HD formats. The most important thing is DTCP was approved by the AACS people so security wise I-Link is fine and 400Mbps is way more bandwidth than is needed for all next gen audio formats. I-link already has Clock Lock support, custom packets (Allows things like Overlay OSD and control over I-Link) and daisy chaining support which are not yet offered by HDMI. HDMI is much like a digital scart and was picked for convenience rather than performance.

As for HD players with I-Link, I think we will have to wait and see but things aren't looking good despite reasonable demand from higher end users.

So it seems that Onkyo will be releasing the HDMI 1.2 card in July/Aug?

Will this card have only 2 inputs / 1 output or will it give me more?

I already have one port used and will hopefully be getting a high def dvd player in the future, not to mention if my x-box 360 ever releases an hdmi cable option than i will run out of ports. I really hope they give at least 3 inputs if they plan on charging $500 as was previously discussed on this board.

I wish the newer HD DVD players supported iLINK. It is such a waste not using this great technology...
