View Full Version : Battlestar Galactica on SciFi HD - Season 4
dedwards 11-05-06, 07:54 AM About the satellite / probe / whatever -
In the beginning of the series, when they were at the "weapons locker" there was a type of radiation there that made Leoben sick. Maybe the probe has a stronger form of this radiation?
Also, I don't know if this means anything - but I record the show on my media center PC. In the TV guide data, it gives a brief synopsis of each show. For this episode it says "a deadly virus forces the Cylons to make terrible choices to protect their race." I happened to read this before watching the show, and I thought they were talking about a computer virus.
Funny if that blurb turned out to be a major spoiler...
DE
Apparently the disease that killed Six causes cylons to speak in Bushisms. She refered to the disease as a "pestulance". Perhaps it would have made sense for the surviving cylons to destroy the ship with a nucular device.
Hounsfield 11-05-06, 11:34 AM Only 1 item we've launched has actually left the solar system. And it just did this recently. As of 2006, both Voyager 1 and 2 have reached the inner edge of our solar system's heliopause... so they're not even in true interstellar space yet. But then again, we have no idea when the events in BSG are taking place.
Kind of interesting is that both the Pioneer and Voyager space probes included a "pulsar map" which shows our sun's location relative to 14 pulsars in the galaxy. And Pioneer 10 is on a trajectory that will take it to a star called Aldebaran, which is the eye of the constellation Taurus, the bull. There is a nebula called M1, or the Crab Nebula, within the Taurus constellation, which contains a pulsar at its center. We see a crab, but who's to say others might not see... a lion's head?
Again, I hope they're not going there. The whole NASA-space-probe-intercepted-by-aliens-thing has been done before, and as Iteki brings up, it would take millions of years for any of our current probes to get to such an exotic location.

I doubt they will...it didn't look remotely NASA like. It's more likely a 13th colony marker left behind.
only 4 more episodes till the mid point season break of the 3rd. season.
Going by way to fast.
I found it amusing at Lt Sharon Agathon's new call sign, Athena, the name of Cmd Adama's daughter in the original series. The new call sign is good that she is now a "different" person then the Lt. Boomer who shot Cmd Adama.
Also, interesting that she seemed to change when her and Racetrack jumped to the pulsar where the base ship (I still want to call them Base Star's) was infected.
- I doubt Baltar is a Cylon. They may be setting it up to create doubt in the viewers mind, but I think I would be disappointed if he is. Plus, if he is and they sent him to the base ship then they could not let him back aboard.
I doubt he is cylon but he did have a protective suit on so they could spring this on us later if they really wanted. I am sure he went thru a decontamination when he got back.
Hounsfield 11-06-06, 06:03 PM Wow, guys and their obsession with long hair.... I thought she looked ridiculous with those poorly done extensions. According to Ronald Moore's latest podcast, it was her real hair -- and she was reluctant to cut it.
Incidentally, this week's podcast was one of the more interesting ones. It was recorded in a film class and he answers questions from the students as the show plays. Apparently this was one of the more messed up episodes. It required a lot of tweaking in post-production to make work (which, for example, is why the scenes with Baltar and Six on the beach had their mouths glared out with reflections from the water -- the dialogue was completely changed and then re-dubbed onto the footage later).

That explains a lot. I was wondering why the cinematographer screwed up like that, in a show that is shot so well most of the time. I never feel like I have time to listen to podcasts, maybe I should try to make time more often, as little facts like this explain so much about the finished product. Thanks!
drsimnal 11-06-06, 06:35 PM BTW Hounsfield, are you a radiologist?
flint350 11-06-06, 07:40 PM According to Ronald Moore's latest podcast, it was her real hair -- and she was reluctant to cut it.
It may have been her real hair, but it sure isn't her "real" color. Her hair also seems to mirror her mood. When it was long and soft, she was softer. Now it's short and she's back to being a hard-ass (overplayed for my taste in the first two seasons - which I just caught up on by DVD and am now watching the series as it airs).
Call me crazy, but when Moore said it was her "real hair" I got the impression he was just pointing out that she was cutting the hair on her head. I thought he was making the point that it wasn't a trick (a wig or something) but that she really cut her hair herself.
I didn't really think Moore was differentiating between extensions and actual hair she'd grown out. It certainly looked like extensions. The differing lengths usually give it away, but I could easily be wrong and she just had really bad hair.
To me, it looked the same as it did on Lay Down Your Burdens II. And that was definitely not her real hair.
Ericglo 11-07-06, 10:53 AM Ummm, how many women do we have in this thread? With all this talk about hair, I am starting to think that I am in a beauty salon.:D
It's kind of neat because I really thought I was the only woman watching BSG. Anyway, I will cease and desist all hair talk. :)

I think you are far from the only woman watching this show. I think my friend's wife (http://www.sandrachang.net/) enjoys the show more than he does.
I guess the hair talk is ok, just don't drool over Apollo and tell us how great his body is.:) I don't need any more reminders to get my fat 32 inch waist on a diet.:)
Hounsfield 11-07-06, 06:53 PM BTW Hounsfield, are you a radiologist?Guilty. ;) And you?
I've been thinking of enlisting in the Colonial Fleet. They seem to be a little short on docs... and I could use a haircut. :p
I- Earth was a big question for me. Why is Earth now so important? They have both the old colonies and New Caprica to settle. This seems stupid. I hope they have a really good reason behind this.
They nuked all of the colonies and probably don't want to spend the time to clean them up. New Caprica was not a great place to live. And they really do hate them humans. :D

Doesn't it have some religious significance as well?

And I had just chalked it up to Sci-Fi's standard uber-poor picture quality! Washouts, blur, poor contrast, artifacts, etc.... :(
Live and learn.
archiguy 11-08-06, 02:38 PM True, we still need to know about the other 5 Cylon models,
They've been "boxed" I believe.
....... is Lee's wife a Cylon deep cover operative,.....
You know where I stand on that one... ;)
Come on folks, 21 Hours till Episode 307.
We have been too quiet in this topic.
Look like Sci-Fi will be moving BSG to a new Friday time slot when it comes back from its mid season break. They want to help boost viewership.

Just got to get through 3 classes on Friday and it's all Battlestar Galatica for me.

Did you miss the whole speel about projection? Six said it doesn't matter where they live as they can project whatever surroundings they want around themselves.
Ericglo 11-10-06, 10:37 AM OK, I hate to do this to everyone, but here it goes. Apparently, there are several cast members that are getting a bit of the David Caruso disease. It seems that some are tired of the commute to Canada and are getting some offers for other things. The funny thing to me is that the show can go on just fine as long as Mary and Edward are on board. If they are looking for leverage, then they really have none. If they think that the grass is greener with these other offers, then call Denise Crosby. Anyway, I hope this turns out to be nothing and that most of them are one step away from doing conventions for the rest of their lives.

Haven't heard any of that. Which cast members? Can you provide any links?

As you might guess, I got this info from my friend.:) Calle is the only one we talked about, because I couldn't stop laughing when he said it. Like a tree falling in the forest, if Calle died in the line up would anyone notice? He did say it was a couple of cast members. Right now I would put it under rumors and speculation. This may turn out to be nothing more than a power play for more money, but don't be surprised if some cast members are gone by next summer.
jonnyozero3 11-10-06, 11:57 AM Sweet! Dead characters! That makes for good writing! :)

Then why are they so hell bent on finding and getting to Earth? That's the question I asked myself when this was revealed. If they can live happily ever after in a "projection" what the deal with reality?
Only one Main Top 10 Cast Member is leaving the show by end of year. And that actor did not want to leave, but the character's role will end.
Everyone else has already verbaly signed up for season 4.
They all are happy with the show.
I wish they would let us do a poll, as I would start one with all of the top 10 cast members listed.
Who do you think will be killed off?
my guess would be:
Col. Saul Tigh
or
Gauis Baltar
or a dist. 3rd. (tie)
Cylon Model #6 or #8
9 Hours 6 Min till show time on the East Coast.
Then why are they so hell bent on finding and getting to Earth? That's the question I asked myself when this was revealed. If they can live happily ever after in a "projection" what the deal with reality?
Without this goal, then the survivors have no reason to live, the show has no reason to remain on tv. Dont worry, they are a long way from Earth.
This show is not going anywhere. SG: Atlantis will be off the air before BSG!
:D
FYI,
Sci-Fi Network Execs are now looking at the Pilot Episode premise and first draft script for the BSG spinoff series Caprica.
:)
Lets all pray the execs give this spinoff series a chance.
Well now they will just play a reverse cat and mouse with the Cylons. I believe that Ron mentioned it in his last podcast. That would make for a good story, the humans trying to get ahead of the Cylons and with Baltar going to Earth.
As for who is leaving, I would suspect Lucy Lawless. She is in a major story arc right now, but it should be done by years end. My thought on it anyway.

Then they would have to "box" the "3's", so we wouldn't see them again. Personally, I fervently hope she remains a part of the cast; she's just sensational in this role. I know she signed a contract for this season (all season or just 10 eps? ...not sure), but I haven't heard anything about extending that.
I hope none of the Cylons we've seen will permanently depart, although the black guy has had such a minor role he wouldn't be missed. Notice we haven't seen any more of the Dean Stockwell character since they left New Caprica; he's terrific as well.

I'm not so sure I want to see this. Prequels haven't been done very well in scifi recently....
Star Wars - Yuck
Enterprise - Took 4 years to hit it's stride
Knowing how things 'end' always spoils the ride for me

And how do you know the cast members are happy? While I said my info was rumor and speculation, it does come from the sources. It may have been one or two cast members venting and then saying that a lot of the cast feels that way. So, it may be nothing more than water cooler bitching. You still have to recognize that being on a set in Canada limits opportunities elsewhere. Also, Mary and Edward are probably the only two making good money off this show.

Lucy is not a top 10 Main Cast Billed Character. She is only a Special Guest Star. and it was already established she is only in 10 of the 20 Episodes this year.
Wont be her.

True, but I was also thinking for main story arcs.
Here are the "main" characters with a couple of special reoccurring characters ( Dualla and Cally). I put questions (?) marks next to those whose rank may have changed since they were/are XO's of a battlestar (Helo and Dualla), and their rank is not really known (by me anyway)
Edward James Olmos.... Admiral William Adama
Mary McDonnell .... President Laura Roslin
Katee Sackhoff .... Cpt. Kara "Starbuck" Thrace
Jamie Bamber .... Maj Lee "Apollo" Adama
James Callis .... Dr. Gaius Baltar
Tricia Helfer .... Number Six / Caprica Six
Grace Park .... Lt. Sharon "Boomer" Valerii / Lt. Sharon "Athena" Agathon
Michael Hogan .... Colonel Saul Tigh
Aaron Douglas .... Chief Petty Officer Galen Tyrol
Tahmoh Penikett .... Cpt. Karl C. 'Helo' Agathon (updated on ep 3x07)
Alessandro Juliani.... Lt. Felix Gaeta
Kandyse McClure .... Petty Officer(?) Anastasia Dualla
Nicki Clyne .... Crewman Specialist Cally
Tough call to say who can easily go and not have a major impact. Time will tell.
I can just hear: " Exterminate, Exterminate"
<dalek voice> Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate! </dalek voice>

That was exactly my point when I brought it up, when I said...
Six said they wanted to make Earth their new home. If the cylons can project and see their surroundings however they want, why do they care where they live?
The post you were reading was in response to johnbe who mentioned that they were going to Earth because Caprica was a bad state to live, which ignored part of the question I originally brought up at which point I was countering by re-introducting it to him ;).

Projection might not work too well standing near a pile of radioactive waste or in a stream of radioactive water. Or on a cold desolate planet. Just my opinion. :)
Back in the episode Download from season 2, the Cylons were cleaning up one of the cities. Even planting Trees.

Please. Maybe the producers never heard of Galactica 1980. Those of us who lived through it don't want to give them any ideas (although, one episode from that dreadful series, The Return of Starbuck, was actually quite good).

Yes, that was a great ep. The only one lol
Anyone hear they were contemplating moving BSG to Wednesday at 8? How amazing would that be...BSG then Lost...Wednesday would be the best night of the week

Also the last Episode of Galactica 1980.
The next Episode was partialy started. It was called "Wheel of Fire" and would have got Starbuck rescued and returned to the Galactica by the ship of lights.

never mind. Helo goes un scathed.
Admiral Adama came through again. All he had to do was hold the fixed election thing over roslins head if she caused a stink.
Very good episode.
AGENT DIXON!!!!!!!!!
Oh wow...BSG just keeps getting better and better
Come on BSG fans. Lets get Posting.
So Say We All!
I love the show, but I didn't think this was one of the best episodes. The genocide debate was interesting, mostly because of who came down on which side. For some reason, I didn't really think Apollo would be that bloodthirsty. And Sharon was OK with the plan, but Helo wasn't.
The torture/sex stuff was disburbing to me. But I laughed a little when Three thought Baltar was telling her he loves her. I wanted some sort of interaction between the Leoben model they brought on board and Starbuck. I kept waiting for it and ... nothing. I figure that's not the same one who kidnapped her, but it still would've been interesting to see how she reacted.
naing_oo_1 11-10-06, 10:53 PM it was an OK episode, not the best, but i liked it.

FreeBaGeL 11-10-06, 10:58 PM Wait....so they're essentially pardoning Helo? That's retarded. He just sabatoged their effort to completely end the threat to their survival and they're just gonna forget about it? Hey now that they know Baltar is leading the cylons towards Earth maybe when they reunite with him they can give him a hug, as they certainly don't seem to care about people betraying the human race.
MOREPOWER 11-10-06, 11:09 PM I liked it but the whole decease thing got snuffed out way to quick, first by Sharon set the self destruct on the base star (that destroyed the original probe) then her boyfriend kills the Cylon's too soon, it was like we did the plot twist this week lets end it. OK done on to the next thrill. it was good could have been better.

Its not as simple as that...Helo was essentially saving the humans from themselves by not allowing them to unleash the bio-weapon upon the Cylons...for one, the simple answer is, had the Cylons been completely destroyed, the show would pretty much be over...there would be hardly any conflict. Secondly, and more importantly, had they been able to succeed in wiping out the Cylons, they would have been sacrificing a piece of their morals and values to do so. Its like Helo said, "if we do this, we are no better than they are". As for the lack of investigation, I think Adama was so totally against the attack, he just didn't want to say so because it would make him sound weak. By not investigating the matter, he is saying, we were saved from making the biggest mistake man-kind has ever made.
I really liked the episode...the torture/sex scene was a bit ackward at first, but I really think they are leading us with something about Baltar....or they are just leading us to believe he is a Cylon...and then they're going to jerk it back.
Hounsfield 11-10-06, 11:53 PM AGENT DIXON!!!!!!!!!
Oh wow...BSG just keeps getting better and betterI always knew Arvin Sloane was a cylon :p
One really good thing about this episode is it gets the whole "kill all the Cylons with a virus" endgame possibility out of the way. That would really be pretty lame and obvious, and now that they've already sort of been there, done that, we don't have to worry about it coming up again later.
Ericglo 11-11-06, 12:45 AM Wait....so they're essentially pardoning Helo? That's retarded. First, does the show have to continue indefinitely? If they kill them tonight, then they could play around and wrap up the show with just a couple of more episodes. I like the idea of a show having an end.
Second, it wasn't Helo's decision to make. Yes, they may have been sacrificing their morals and values, but what is the alternative. Suppose the Cylons find Earth and kill all of the humans plus destroy the rest of the fleet. Wow, at least they died with their morals and values. Helo should be put in the brig.
Anyway this was already played out with the Borg in TNG.
Workindood 11-11-06, 02:32 AM Well they could have weakened the Cylon race a bit. Meaning not all would have died. The Black Death didn't kill all of the human race. So why not simply thin the herd of Cylons to make it more realistic. Some Cylons would have survived...built up an immunity to the desease.
Hounsfield 11-11-06, 03:11 AM I liked it but the whole decease thing got snuffed out way to quick, first by Sharon set the self destruct on the base star (that destroyed the original probe) then her boyfriend kills the Cylon's too soon, it was like we did the plot twist this week lets end it. OK done on to the next thrill. it was good could have been better.Yah, everything was wrapped up rather conveniently. The whole thing about Athena gaining immunity from her hybrid baby was a lot of biotechnobabble, too (babies gain passive immunity from their mothers, not the other way around -- and even if Helo was immune to the virus, there would have been no way for him to have transferred his antibodies to the baby). Oh well, I'm happy to suspend belief for one hour a week... Ok, maybe two (LOST). :p
Thinking about it, the only major problem I have with this episode is the idea that Helo is getting off scot free after what he did. Whether or not you agree with it, he did endanger the entire human race - no two ways about it. And yet, Adama AND Roslin are going to look the other way? Way too convenient. Everyone on Galactica has to know who did it.
In fact, I'll add that I now believe Helo will be the major cast member who goes this season. Makes sense now - he needs to get out of the way for Tigh to resume his XO post. Everyone will hate him for sabotaging the mission against the Cylons. And it gives Sharon even more to deal with - she can't be happy, you know.
jonnyozero3 11-11-06, 11:53 AM Notice that athena said, "i'll always love you helo"
Hmmm....
David F 11-11-06, 12:26 PM I just love the relationship that Adama and Roslin have. It's always very quiet and intimate, like they are an old married couple just comfortable being in each other's company.
And she is tough as nails. When Adama "passed the buck" and she told him she wanted the Cylon race extinct...wow. Very low key, no dramatic, delivery, no dramatic music...and more powerful for that.
Ericglo 11-11-06, 12:41 PM Yah, everything was wrapped up rather conveniently. :p
I will say to you what everyone says to me when I point out the incongruities in the military aspect of the show - "It is not supposed to be the same because it is not on earth." or something to that effect.:)
Well they could have weakened the Cylon race a bit. Meaning not all would have died. The Black Death didn't kill all of the human race. So why not simply thin the herd of Cylons to make it more realistic. Some Cylons would have survived...built up an immunity to the desease.
I was thinking along the same lines this morning. I think they could have given them the disease and then given them ultimatums. The Colonials could have made them destroy all of their base ships and renedered them completely defenseless in exchange for the cure. I guess something like what Jack did to Ben on Lost.
Ericglo 11-11-06, 12:42 PM I just love the relationship that Adama and Roslin have.
I agree. I think that was probably the best scene from last night.
Let's see, the Cylons wiped out countless billions of humans and the humans would sacrifice their morals and values if they hit the Cylons back as hard as they hit the humans. That doesn't work for me. Paybacks a bitch mother frakker! You started it, we'll finish it, you shouldn't have attacked us in the first place.
First, does the show have to continue indefinitely? If they kill them tonight, then they could play around and wrap up the show with just a couple of more episodes. I like the idea of a show having an end.So do I. Wrap it after this season and do a motion-picture. Anyways, Sharon is technically no longer a cylon and neither is her baby. Therefore, they should totally fr*kkin' blow the rest of the skin-jobs to blazes!
Let's see, the Cylons wiped out countless billions of humans and the humans would sacrifice their morals and values if they hit the Cylons back as hard as they hit the humans. then they are no better than the Cylons and pratically proved the point that the Humans are nothing more than killing machines...someone has to break the cycle...
also, who is to stop the Cylons from rebuilding and coming back at the humans 10 fold once they get to Earth? They only have 50 thousand something people...surely the Cylons have (and would have) huge supremacy in numbers...as the said in the mini-series, "the war is over and we lost"
Now it might not be as simple as that, but trying to exterminate the cylons and not having 100% absolute certainity to it, could mean the very extermination of the human species...
archiguy 11-11-06, 08:28 PM And what if when the Cylons eventually find out that humans had a chance to exterminate them but didn't act on that knowledge. Might this not make the Cylons look at humanity differently? Perhaps this act of conscience on the part of one man ends up saving all of mankind from extermination at the hands of the Cylons down the line.
And, if the entire Cylon fleet didn't come to the battle coordinates, then those that stayed away would survive. The battle fleet plus that resurrection ship would all eventually die, but Cylons not in the vicinity wouldn't have any way to catch the virus and thus would have survived, no? And they'd be mucho pissed, no? I think this may end up being the right thing to do, besides being the morally ambiguous right thing to do.
They do tackle some tough issues on this show, don't they? Nothing else like it on TV.

Yea because gee, the Cylons have only killed billions of people and nearly destroyed the entire human race while endlessly pursuing the few survivors. Wouldn't want to provoke them or they might do something bad to you

They said many times that if an infected cylon was resurrected it would infect EVERY SINGLE cylon. Every skinjob, every centurion, and every ship regardless of whether or not they were within the vicinity.
Note sure how that could have been missed with the number of times it was repeated...
The Cylons launched an unprovoked, sneak attack with the intent of wiping the human race off the face of the universe--who are the killing machines...
If the Cylons corner the Colonial Fleet, they will fight to last man and woman, game over, humanity is extinct.
Put it into present day perspective. Let's say that pinhead in North Korea loses it completely and launches his nukes at the U.S hitting the west coast-- millions are killed.
I don't think it would be morally ambigous or unethical when we turned North Korea into a parking lot, I would expect no less of a response to an attack that killed millions of my countrymen.
This show is just too damn good!
The Cylons launched an unprovoked, sneak attack with the intent of wiping the human race off the face of the universe--who are the killing machines...Didn't humans attempt to wipe out the cylons when they rebelled the first time?
Of course, back then, they didn't have human form, and [we assume] couldn't think independently.
I wonder if Sci Fi or some other new series will ever explore that topic -- the history of human / cylon relations, the cylon's rebellion and their fight for freedom and independence(?), etc.
They said many times that if an infected cylon was resurrected it would infect EVERY SINGLE cylon. Every skinjob, every centurion, and every ship regardless of whether or not they were within the vicinity.
Note sure how that could have been missed with the number of times it was repeated...I was always under the impression that the centurians were machines consisting of metal and computer chips, but these last two episodes seem to suggest that there is a biological element to them as well, just as there is for the raiders. How else could they get infected and die, since it was made pretty clear that this wasn't a computer virus.
Yea because gee, the Cylons have only killed billions of people and nearly destroyed the entire human race while endlessly pursuing the few survivors. Wouldn't want to provoke them or they might do something bad to you
I think the Cylons semi-admitted that this was wrong....they left them alone for a year on New Caprica...only when they received notice of the nuclear blast did they come and investigate. Sure enough, they tried to make peace (at least in their eyes). However, that was a slippery slope and soon (well in no time exactly) turned back into an underground war...I'm not saying the Cylons weren't wrong in trying to extinquish the human race on Capirca and the rest of the colonies, but perhaps there is a way for them to live in harmony...

You missed the entire point of my post. The point is, that if any of them happened to survive a genocidal biological attack and resurrected the Cylon fleet, the war would continue until all humans were exterminated. The Cylons would win a war of attrition; they have superior numbers and can presumably manufacture enough assets to ultimately win. But if they discovered that the humans showed them the ultimate act of compassion, then it might lead to a new willingness for the Cylons to finally consider peace. Just saying that's a plotline that could be pursued, and perhaps even lead to a conclusion of the story down the line.
They said many times that if an infected cylon was resurrected it would infect EVERY SINGLE cylon. Every skinjob, every centurion, and every ship regardless of whether or not they were within the vicinity.
Oh, I heard it. Just don't know how it would be possible if the battle fleet were completely exterminated by the virus and no other Cylons came into the vicinity. How then would the virus be transmitted? I believe what they were saying was that every Cylon within the vicinity of the Resurrection Ship would be infected. And all would presumably die; the threat would end there if the area remained quarantined. Once out of range of the Resurrection Ship, there would be no way for the virus to travel to other parts of the galaxy where other Cylon elements would be, either by actual contact or by virtual download.
RANK update.
Karl Agathon now holds the Rank of Captain per tonights episode.
He's a fracking traitor who needs to get airlocked asap. Get Tigh out of his bunk he'll handle it for free (well maybe a bottle of booze)

Yes but that's already the status quo: Cylons trying to wipe out humanity. So what if some of them survive and go after humans again? Nothing has essentially changed, but they've bought some time at least.
You can tell by the Cylons lack of trust in Baltar that they would never believe the humans would pass up the chance to exterminate them. We could tell them that till the cows come home, they'd say 'right sure sit in this chair' :-)
MOREPOWER 11-12-06, 08:48 AM I think the whole Sharon Xena is our friend thing is just part of the build up to the end,she will sell them out, and the story hints that, what will happen when she learns her baby lives, or if she dies and resurrects they will know what she knows, now her husband is a traitor. this plot just gets better and better, this is the best writing on TV.
petergaryr 11-12-06, 09:48 AM I find it fascinating that the colonials attempt to dehumanize (can you dehumanize a machine?) the Cylons with epithets like "skin job" and "toaster", yet pass up the opportunity to terminate them.
Somewhere, somehow, at least Adama and Helo have decided that robots are people, or at least sentient artificial life forms. Of course, the thing (person) both have in common is "Sharon". Both have come to know her in an intimate way, one as a friend and the other as lover. It makes it hard to commit genocide, or at least robocide if you are in love with one of the eneny.

Well, not necessarily. Caprica Six & Sharon were able to change the whole course of the Cylon plan with regard to humans, although things didn't work out so well on N.C. They've shown a willingness to adapt from their initial course of genocide. Perhaps one final supreme act of humanity by their sworn enemies, even in the face of themselves being destroyed, will convince the Cylons to take yet another path, one of peace. Otherwise it's almost certainly curtains for the Colonists eventually as the Cylons can just wear them down militarily over time and are also now in the hunt for earth. Certainly, it's a plotline that would fit in well with the sometimes unconventional nature of how this show examines socio-political issues. That could represent an organic conclusion to the series at some point down the line when that time comes. Just my .02, as they say.

LOL Didn't work out so well? Yes, despotism, torture, wrongful imprisonment and mass murder can sometimes ruin even the most forgiving of relationships.

Maybe, perhaps, possibly. Wishful thinking. And there's the old saying, wish in one hand sh*t in the other. :-)
ridgefamus 11-12-06, 01:44 PM One other possble story line, which might not be conducive to very interesting subsequent episodes, is for Roslin to enter a cold war scenario with the Cylons. Hold over the Cylons the potential of unleashing the same virus on them should further attempts be made to attack the humans or impede their pursuit of Earth.
prospect60 11-12-06, 02:06 PM They said many times that if an infected cylon was resurrected it would infect EVERY SINGLE cylon. Every skinjob, every centurion, and every ship regardless of whether or not they were within the vicinity.
Said many times, but with it was all theory as to whether the biological virus would transmit to the Resurrection Ship. I don't think the Cylons knew for sure.
Though the Humans don't know it yet, Hera is still there and many times Six has prophesized the Hera is the Key.
Now that Baltar is known to be alive, he certainly could come up with the same cure as Cottle either by using his own blood or Hera's once he knows what the agent is.
Since Cottle knows what the cause is and presumedly has a 'culture' of the agent, it really doesn't make any real difference whether the infected Cylons are dead or not, he should be able to manufacture a Dirty Bomb and send it the direction of the Cylons at any given moment. As a matter of fact, it would make a far better Psych weapon to threaten the Cylons with the agent -- "Stop following us or we will unleash THE AGENT on your whole race." Since the Cylons now believe that the Virus is ManMade and incurable it would likely be a whole lot more effective in the long run than it would be to unleash the agent and either have it fail or let the Cylons/Baltar/Hera find a cure. This should still be a viable option since the Cylons are still in the dark so to speak. If Adama, etc could convice the Cylons that they didn't make the disease, but the 13th colony did so why would the Cylons now be interested in going to a place where there is known to be at least one "Cylon Nuke" and who knows how many more there might be there.
Humans developed a resistance to the Virus, there is certainly should be little reason to believe the Cylons Immune system wouldn't eventually adapt the same way since it is pretty obvious they are built on a Human Biological Model. It certainly would likely slow them down a lot, but to expect it to cause the absolute extinction of the Cylon Race is a bit unrealistic.
I still think the whole "Is Data sentient since he is a Machine" or "Should we exterminate the Borg now that they can think independently" is interesting as others just because of who is on which side of the argument.
The torture/sex stuff was disburbing to me.Yes, quite disturbing; but a very powerful scene, nonetheless (I'm not into torture-sex, BTW). When they dropped the warning at the beginning, you knew something unusual was coming. It appeared that the interrogasex killed Baltar, but probably not.
MOREPOWER 11-12-06, 03:56 PM I think one way they could go with this story and possible ending is it could be that eventually they use the bio weapon, and the cylons find that they must mate or they will "die as a race or become human" not overnight just mate with the creators and become them slowly.
This action would save the cylons in the mean time they take the temporary cure to stay alive, in the end they become like the humans and were all friends, I think this could work, after all they are preoccupied with screwing humans.
archiguy 11-12-06, 07:38 PM LOL Didn't work out so well? Yes, despotism, torture, wrongful imprisonment and mass murder can sometimes ruin even the most forgiving of relationships.
All better than the Cylons previous approach: dropping a nuke on them from orbit. ;) At any rate, they do show willingness to deviate from their original plan, which was straight-up genocide. Makes them more complex, and interesting if they can actually be reasoned with, if they have some flexibility. It gives Ron Moore & company a lot of potential directions they can take the story in, including perhaps the one I postulated.

I agree. I didn't find it believable that the Cylons would throw in the towel on the virus right away without knowing anything about it. Surely they would have tried to study it somehow, perhaps with non-biological robots. They ought to be able to throw a few of those together in short order, I should think. At any rate, they sure gave up on the virus fast.
Also thought it was interesting that it wasn't a biological weapon at all, just a probe that somebody sneezed on 3,000 years prior. :p
petergaryr 11-12-06, 08:38 PM ...

Out of curiosity and since I don't remember, has the timeframe been revealed for what we are watching? Is the assumption that the current events in BSG are our present time?
In Galactica 1980 [the series about which we do not speak], when they reached earth it was current time, so earth's capability to fend off a Cylon attack was non-existent.
prospect60 11-12-06, 08:51 PM They haven't given us any idea (I'm sure intentionally) whether this would be current day Earth, 5 thousand years ago, or our future, but since "it's all happened before and will happen again" I suppose you can make an argument for all of the above.

Whitearrow 11-13-06, 04:05 PM OK, I hate to do this to everyone, but here it goes. Apparently, there are several cast members that are getting a bit of the David Caruso disease. It seems that some are tired of the commute to Canada and are getting some offers for other things. The funny thing to me is that the show can go on just fine as long as Mary and Edward are on board.
I have to say, this doesn't make much sense. Most of the supporting, non-opening credit cast -- including Nicki Clyne, who plays Cally, but also the actors who play Tigh, Helo, Dualla, Gaeta, Tyrol, Anders, etc., plus most of the guest-star cylons (except Dean Stockwell and Lucy Lawless) -- are Vancouver-based actors.
Maybe some of these folks want to move to Hollywood and try their fortunes and/or are getting other offers, but that's not the same as being tired of commuting. As these folks aren't locked into multiyear contracts, they'd be free to do that if they wanted to, anyway, but the absence of any couple of these people wouldn't be a show-killer.
I'm also pretty sure that all of the opening-credit cast -- as is typical -- were locked into five-year contracts when the show went to series, and while the studio can't force them to work, they can make it pretty tough for them to work for anyone else unless they reach an agreement to release them from their contracts.
Chris Ruhl 11-13-06, 04:35 PM Yeah, I have noticed that there seem to be more and more episodes where one of the major players is nowhere to be found. Sharon was missing from several episodes earlier this season, and was Starbuck even on the last episode? I don't seem to recall.

I think so. It might be an appropriate -- or even the best -- choice in some circumstances, but shaky moral ground? Yeah. Carpet bombing Dresden and other places might have been the best tactical decision at the time, but do I think it was morally shaky? Yeah, I do.
Anytime you make the conscious choice to kill civilians, you're on shaky moral ground, especially when those civilians live under a totalitarian regime and have no say in their government's actions.

Discussions like these are why a show like this would never make it on network TV. It provokes too much thought about morally ambiguous situations.
Let me think....when was the last time such a discussion occurred in the Dancing with the Stars series..mmmmm...hard one.
Anyway, we are back to the question of whether the Cylons are more than machines. That was a big one for Helo to realize that he was in love with an artificial life form.
Technically, the Cylons can replicate, but not reproduce. So, as a people they are apparently limited to a certain number of models [some of which we may not speak]. The lines really blur when there is a hybrid. They still need a human to create a new "model".
It must be very annoying to realize that the eneny you are trying to wipe out is who you need to complete yourself.

ejunior2 11-13-06, 08:07 PM I didn't see it discussed in this weekends posts but exactly what did happen with Baltar? I got the imporession from 3 that she thought God was talking through Balter there at the end. Not sure why? Just got that impression.
I hate to go back too far, but I never really understood what happened to change the Cylons' minds. Their plan is "ever-evolving", to put it kindly. Cavil told Adama and Roslin at the end of Season Two that the Cylons would leave the humans alone. And they did leave the 12 planets.
So, what changed their minds? Why did they decide to come after the humans again? Any ideas? Or was this explained and I am just that obtuse?

So, what changed their minds? Why did they decide to come after the humans again? Any ideas? Or was this explained and I am just that obtuse? No, you're not obtuse... I remember thinking that was odd, too. So the Cylons saw the nuclear explosion that the tortured Six from Pegasus set off -- so what, right? Why should that make them want to suddenly restore ties to the people they were now at "peace" with? Never quite made sense to me, either, and then I forgot about it as the second season was ending.
Maybe they are just naturally drawn to their creators?
Something else I've noticed this season, is that I miss that "unknown element" of the Cylons. In the first season and a half, we really didn't know anything about them, and that made them frightening and intriguing. Now that we see them as somewhat wishy-washy and vulnerable (and more human than we thought), they just don't seem as menacing. It also used to be thrilling just to catch a glimpse of a Centurion, and now we've seen them in broad daylight, and they're just not as horrifying (recall the early days on Caprica when Helo and Sharon were stalked by Centurions, or when the Centurions boarded Galactica)... Anyway, I still love the show, I just hope they don't reveal too much about the Cylons, too quickly. Sometimes being kept in the dark is more fun!

People have a right to survive, and to defend themselves from attack. Part of that defense is striking back to ensure that future attack don't occur.
Unless you are a pacifist, then there is NO situation in which violence or retaliation is ok.
Besides there are no Cylon civilians that I'm aware of :-)

It was the incident with Caprica 6 and Galactica Sharon. They chose to hang on to some human emotions and showed regret for what they'd done to humanity. They used their war hero status to convince the rest of the Cylons that they required a different approach to dealing with humanity. Part of this was shown in the episode that showed Galactica Sharon and Caprica 6 adjusting to their new life on Caprica. It was further explained by Cavil when they captured him on Galactica.
After that the Fleet had disappeared. They weren't discovered until that cylon patrol detected the signs of the nuclear blast from the year before. They took the opportunity to see if they could live with humans, but um....no
Hounsfield 11-14-06, 01:50 AM After that the Fleet had disappeared. They weren't discovered until that cylon patrol detected the signs of the nuclear blast from the year before. They took the opportunity to see if they could live with humans, but um....noMaybe, but it was an awfully forceful approach toward trying to live together... Looked more like an invasion to me. The Cylons jump into orbit, the Colonial fleet jumps out, and the next thing you know, Baltar is surrendering to them.
SHARON: "As long as you offer no resistance, you won't be harmed."
BALTAR: "How do I know that?"
DORAL: "You don't. You also don't have any choice."
Doral then explains how they found the colonists, and two seconds later, Baltar surrenders. Cut to a scene of Centurions marching down the mainstreet. Huh? If this isn't an invasion, then why are we surrendering?
As loco pointed out, this just seemed like a 180 from the new beginning that Brother Cavil had promised ("Cylons and man will go their separate ways"), and they didn't do a very good job of explaining why the Cylons were suddenly back to pester the humans.
Whitearrow 11-14-06, 01:08 PM People have a right to survive, and to defend themselves from attack. Part of that defense is striking back to ensure that future attack don't occur.
Unless you are a pacifist, then there is NO situation in which violence or retaliation is ok.
Besides there are no Cylon civilians that I'm aware of :-)
Okay, first? You are changing your premise :) You said something to the effect of: you can't argue we'd be on morally shaky ground for nuking someone who nuked us. And my response is yes, we would, even if it was the best tactical decision. Morally, in terms of ethics and existential right and wrong? It's still shaky ground.
Yes, people have a right to survive and defend themselves. That doesn't always mean answering an attack on civilians with an attack on civilians (which won't necessarily prevent future attack anyway). It doesn't always mean answering WMD with WMD, either -- by that logic, it would have been fine if the Japanese had bombed two US cities, had they been able to get their hands on nukes in 1945.
And your premise had nothing to do with cylons, which is why I responded with a real-world example.

I don't see that I changed the premise at all, i'm just responding to your rebuttal. You brought up the civilians. What part of my premise specified attacks on civilians only? Explain how you use nukes without affecting civilians? There will always be collateral damage. Even if you only target their military facilities (very often located near population centers), there will be mass civilian casualties. And in the example of the Cylons, that's not an issue as they have none lol. Anyway, any use of nukes will result in civilian deaths, so if we stick to your moral definition then any use of nukes is immoral. The whole point of a deterrent is that your enemy has to know that you are willing to use it. A nuke you are unwilling to use is simply a radioactive paperweight.
If humanity were at full strength and had not been attacked by the Cylons, then yes, a genocidal attack would be uncalled for. But they no longer have the luxury of what-if scenarios. They have less than 50K left. If nothing else they have to even the odds. Purely practical, and IMO, morally justified given the Cylons first strike and attempted genocide. Just because the Cylons didn't succeed in wiping humans out doesn't let them off the hook for trying in the first place.
This discussion is probably best kept to college philosophy class as we'll never agree :-)
FreeBaGeL 11-14-06, 02:51 PM by that logic, it would have been fine if the Japanese had bombed two US cities, had they been able to get their hands on nukes in 1945.
Do you really think they wouldn't have?
There's a reason people think the next nuclear attack will be the end of the world, and it certainly is not that that one nuclear bomb is going to blow up the entire planet, but rather that one nuke being fired off will lead to another nuke being fired back, and so on and so forth, which is essentially what we're talking about here.
If someone is shooting a gun at you, you'll definitely fire back with the intent to kill would you happen to be armed yourself.
I don't even see the dilemma here, and the only reason it is one is because the show intentionally turned it into one. How many books, movies, etc are out there where alien race X is trying to destroy humanity and humanity fights back by trying to destroy them first? This can be seen in movies as simple as independence day, yet no one ever brought up the morality of that because the writers didn't throw it in our face like they did here.
Maybe, but it was an awfully forceful approach toward trying to live together... Looked more like an invasion to me. The Cylons jump into orbit, the Colonial fleet jumps out, and the next thing you know, Baltar is surrendering to them.
Sorry I was using their terminology, not 'ours'. They saw it as a compromise, humans saw it as another form of oppression.
I think when they realized that humans had settled on a planet, they saw an opportunity to go down a different path. But yes, they never really explained the jump from 'go our own ways' to 'let's make humans our pets'
As loco pointed out, this just seemed like a 180 from the new beginning that Brother Cavil had promised ("Cylons and man will go their separate ways"), and they didn't do a very good job of explaining why the Cylons were suddenly back to pester the humans.
Yes, that's what I was getting at. Thanks for your thoughts on this. I am glad to know I wasn't the only one scratching my head about that.
The explanation I came up with for myself was that the Cylons had already decided against chasing the humans around any more before Caprica Six and Sharon made their arguments about living with the humans and trying to bring the word of God to them (or whatever it was they were trying to do). So, Brother Cavil told Adama and Roslin that Cylons and Humans would go their separate ways, which they did for a while. Then, perhaps Six and Sharon's position won out and they set out looking for the humans once again.
I guess that's one way of interpreting what happened. I just don't think it was all that well articulated on the show, leaving me wondering if I'd missed something somewhere along the line.
Whitearrow 11-14-06, 03:19 PM I don't see that I changed the premise at all, i'm just responding to your rebuttal. You brought up the civilians. That's sort of precisely my point as to why the use of nuclear weapons is always morally shaky, no matter what the provocation.
Anyway, any use of nukes will result in civilian deaths, so if we stick to your moral definition then any use of nukes is immoral.
It's morally questionable, which is different than immoral. You are trying to make this black and white, and I'm pointing out the shades of grey.
The whole point of a deterrent is that your enemy has to know that you are willing to use it.
Once anyone actually uses nukes, the whole deterrent thing has kind of failed by its very definition, hasn't it?
A nuke you are unwilling to use is simply a radioactive paperweight.
And with that logic, each side bombs each other back until there's nothing left. Great solution :)
So... genocide is morally justified because the other side tried it first? It would have been perfectly fine with you if the Tsutsis in Rwanda had started their own genocide?
I mean, really, I have no problem with arguing that what Apollo suggested was tactically appropriate or strategically best. But *morally*? Genocide against another sentient race is never morally justified.
As others have pointed out, the likelihood that this strategy will kill 100% of cylons is low. Then you have pissed off cylons wanting human blood and death even more. Which makes the humans respond in kind. And so on until both races manage to destroy each other. The cycle has to stop somewhere. Caprica Six and Sharon showed that there are cylons who are willing to at least try to take a different path, no matter how badly it went, at least it gives cause for some hope.
That's sort of precisely my point as to why the use of nuclear weapons is always morally shaky, no matter what the provocation.
It's morally questionable, which is different than immoral. You are trying to make this black and white, and I'm pointing out the shades of grey.
Then this is a useless discussion. As I said we disagree. :-)
EDIT:
Read that again and it came across a little too harsh. I don't mean to imply that your opinion doesn't matter or doesn't have merit. Just that we don't agree and will just spin our wheels arguing over it.

Surely you can't seriously be comparing those two works. There's more subtilty and nuance in 5 minutes of BSG than there was in the entire movie ID4. This show is far more than mere pulp entertainment. Moore and company aspire to greater things. Thank the gods.
The beauty of this show is that it brings up questions like that which lead to discussions like this. There really is nothing else like it on the small screen or large. It's good to expand one's mind and think about stuff like this, especially in this day and age where our leaders try everything in the book to paint real-life issues in black and white terms because it makes things easier for them.
The explanation I came up with for myself was that the Cylons had already decided against chasing the humans around any more before Caprica Six and Sharon made their arguments about living with the humans and trying to bring the word of God to them (or whatever it was they were trying to do). I suspect that the writers will revisit that issue soon and explain the Cylon's motivations with more clarity. Then again, you may have hit it on the head. How much interference in the affairs of other, less advanced nations have western missionaries committed over the centuries? In the overarching interest of bringing our god to them, we've destroyed entire cultures, wiped out whole civilizations (for their own good, of course, the little heathens). Perhaps that's the point the show is trying to make. ;)
So, what changed their minds? Why did they decide to come after the humans again? Any ideas? Or was this explained and I am just that obtuse?I guess you never heard the phrase: "Once an evil mutant, always an evil....." etc,. :D

I don't know...the two centurions that came at Baltar looked pretty menacing to me....

help-r-monkey 11-16-06, 08:00 PM Personally, I believe that the halt of attacks and leaving the humans alone were due to sharon and six. I also believe that if it were up to them they would have peacefully landed on N.C., however I think that a few of the other cylon models had thier own ajenda. The cylon's appear to operate by calling to vote on thier next collective actions. The Dorals and cavils seemed to like the stick more than the carrot on the humans. Maybe a few models even had a plan within the cylon regime to sabotage the 'whole live in peace' deal.

I can't believe I totally forgot about that until you brought it up. :)
I like your explanation, too, but if you believe the Brother Cavil model, Caprica Six and Boomer were key in the original peace plan. Let's review the tape (or itunes download): ;)
CAVIL: "The war heroes have managed to swing opinion over to their side."
ADAMA: "What heroes?"
CAVIL: "A Six and an Eight. One of the Eights you know as Sharon Valeri. Their voices carry a lot of weight. So when they started talking about our mistakes, and our corruption, and our need for a new beginning, the rest of us listened."
CAVIL2: "You see, we're not like you. We can admit our mistakes, and we're not afraid of change."
ROSLIN: "So you abandoned the colonies, leaving behind a devastated nuclear wasteland."
ADAMA: "And we're supposed to be grateful?"
CAVIL: "Our pursuit of this fleet of yours was another error -- that's two -- for anyone who's keeping score. Both errors led to the same result. We became what we beheld. We became you."
CAVIL2: "Amen. People should be true to who and what they are. We're machines. We should be true to that. Be the best machines the universe has ever seen. But we got it into our heads that we were the children of humanity. So instead of pursuing our own destiny, of trying to find our own path to enlightenment, we hijacked yours."
CAVIL: "You said it brother. My mission here is simple. I'm to tell you that you've been given a reprieve. Cylon and man will go their separate ways. No harm done."
ADAMA: "No harm? You completely annihilated our race and destroyed our civilization."
CAVIL2: "Now if you're going to start pointing fingers..."
ROSLIN: "Where did the Cylons go? Back to their homeworld?"
CAVIL: "Well, I'd rather not say just now. Let's just say we have other plans."
ADAMA: "New marching orders by your one true God?"
CAVIL2: "There is no God."
CAVIL: "Supernatural divinities are the primitives' answer for why the sun goes down at night. At least that's what we've been trying to tell the others for years. Can't really prove it one way or the other, of course."
ROSLIN: "I know one way to prove it. Throw them both out the airlock. Let them see if there really is a Cylon God."
From day 1, the opening of the show has told us that the Cylons have a plan. They do??? Man, that must be one frakked up plan! :p
Hounsfield 11-16-06, 08:50 PM Personally, I believe that the halt of attacks and leaving the humans alone were due to sharon and six. Maybe a few models even had a plan within the cylon regime to sabotage the 'whole live in peace' deal.Good points. I agree that each of the models seems to have its own agenda. From the above dialogue, you can see that the Brother Cavils had been trying to convince the other models that there is no God.
All of this seems to make the Cylons out to be pretty disorganized and ineffective. Again, I preferred the days when we didn't know the Cylons were a bunch of neurotic robots playing rock-paper-scissors with the fate of the Colonial fleet.
I'd like to see some new mechanical Cylons or ships. Something freaky and unknown to scare the crap out of the Humans. :D
Well, Hounsfield, now that I see the transcript, I do remember that. So much for my explanation! I will now adopt help-r-monkey's! Or maybe the Cavil's were just sent to spread misinformation to the fleet. Maybe they were trying to make them think they would be left alone so they would settle on the first rock they came upon.
Who knows? But you're right - that Cylon plan is frakked. I kind of wish they'd take that "And they have a plan" phrase out of the intro. It makes me giggle.
Well, Another Great Episode, I keep waiting on a slow down episode. But they keep getting better and better.
Sucks we have to wait 2 weeks for episode 3x09. But then only the 2 episodes left till the half way season break. :(

MOREPOWER 11-17-06, 10:40 PM Thats what i thought, funny thats all I kept thinking about through the show.
You would think the cylons would have massive non stop orgies, considering their preoccupation with constantly screwing humans.
I would rather see it move to Wednesday night at 10:00 rather than 8:00. 8pm is too early for that type of programming. Besides, maybe this isn't a popular opinion around here, but I have almost completely lost interest in "Lost" and I know of a lot of other people who feel the same way. I'm not sure any strategy of pairing BSG with Lost would be all that helpful at this point. I wouldn't be surprised of Lost's audience really starts to dwindle after this three month hiatus.
Anyway, I LOVED tonight's BSG episode! I thought last week's was a little weak, so it was great to see the show back on track. Roslin is awesome! Olmos and McDonnell just have so many great scenes together.
Ericglo 11-18-06, 01:54 AM I would rather see it move to Wednesday night at 10:00 rather than 8:00. 8pm is too early for that type of programming.
I was thinking the same thing, if they move to a Wednesday time slot. I would prefer to keep it on Fridays, though. Doesn't American Idol come on at 8 Wednesdays?
What ever it takes to keep it on the air, but Wed would probably cause too many scheduling conflicts with other shows. I like it just where it is, it's the only thing I record at 6pm on a Friday night. :) Wed at 6pm would work too, but 9pm would be a problem.
petergaryr 11-18-06, 05:54 AM Although I do agree it was a compelling episode, a couple of things bother me, or at least I don't quite understand:
1. Why did D'anna have the centurion shoot her?
2. Presumably the Cylons don't know where Galactica is, so they let Agent Dixon go hoping that he might accidentally stumble upon it and take out Adama???

Hmmm, I think AI comes on at 8:00 Tuesdays and then the results show is at 8:30 (?) Wednesdays. Not sure if they are going to stick with that pattern.
"-1. Why did D'anna have the centurion shoot her?-"
That whole flashback/dream-thing confused the hell outta me. I didn't get what or WHEN that was going on. And really.... WHICH Cylon it was happening to.
They make it clear that there's tons of these same model of Cylon but then they try to just make 'one' a main character like 'Caprica' when in the background you see more of her walkin' around.
"-2. Presumably the Cylons don't know where Galactica is, so they let Agent Dixon go hoping that he might accidentally stumble upon it and take out Adama???-"
That seemed to be how Galactica took it, yet... a couple other Cylon ships followed Bulldog/Dixon and got blowed up.
So how did Dixon know where Galactica was. Cylons told him? Then how did the Cylons know and why aren't they there to just blow up Galactica.
From the begining it seemed like somehow they could keep finding Galactica but then the human fleet would just keep jumping somewhere new.
But then the Cylons kept jumping too. Damn that was the first episode. I forgot how that cycle of jumping every whatever minutes finally stopped?
The Cylons kept finding them every 33 minutes because they were tracking the Olympic carrier. Once Galactica blew up the Olympic carrier, the cycle ended. At least that's what I got out of it.

I believe you are right, because there was some question about whether or not they would be killing any humans when they blew up the ship.

good episode even if it was filler
Alimentall 11-18-06, 12:03 PM All I know is that I would pay a good $10/month extra to have Sci-Fi in HD.
Although I do agree it was a compelling episode, a couple of things bother me, or at least I don't quite understand:

You ask a question like that after last week's torture-sex? :p She seems to want to experience the whole human experience. I really don't know....
That was my take exactly. It seemed to be triggered by what she perceived in Baltar as a willingness to die rather than give her the information she wanted.
It also looked like we got a glimpse of the unifying of memories of all the D'Anna's just before she was "re-born" as well.
Hounsfield 11-18-06, 02:13 PM All I know is that I would pay a good $10/month extra to have Sci-Fi in HD.So say we all.
It is painful watching this show in SD. I feel like my TV is out-of-focus. Almost makes me want to skip out a season and play catch up when it hits UHD... well almost. :p
Alimentall 11-18-06, 02:18 PM Hey, try to watch it on a 110" projector!
Hounsfield 11-18-06, 02:20 PM I hope Agent Dixon becomes a recurring character. It would be pretty sweet to see him school Kat in a Viper.
I agree about being able to see the show in HD. I watched Season 1 and 2 on DVD, so this is the first time I've actually had to watch new episodes in SD. Not only does it look like crap on DirecTV, but the audio is horrible, too. I have noticed several episodes where it is darned near impossible to pick up all the dialogue. I do tape the shows, and I almost always have to go back and listen to a line of dialogue or three to decipher it properly. Never had that problem with the DVDs.

Same here, I had to replay a couple of sections to get exactly what was said. It's criminal what happens to the audio and visual on this show given the superior quality of the content.
It's a shame really, by the time it ever gets first-run aired in HD, the show will have been finished, completed, no longer on the air.

Even if LOST withers some, Criminal Minds has posted HUGE gains this last 1.5 seasons...I wouldn't want BSG up against them either. But BOTH? That's about 30 million viewers total to compete with.

I thought D'anna was looking for an afterlife experience. Her dreams had become so powerful, she began to wonder if she'd experience them in death as well.
I find it interesting that it was so easy to reprogram the Centurion to kill her. Seems like a good assassination tool for Cylon v Cylon politics if/when that time comes.
My impression is that Galactica isn't too hard to find (they never seem to have trouble doing it). Plus they are both on somewhat similar heading looking for Earth.
Besides, knowing where Galactica is and actually engaging her are two different stories. The fleet is very adept at jumping at the first sign of contact.
I guess they figured that 'Dog had outlived any usefulness and might do some good as an assassin.

Sci-Fi is only 2.0 Digital Audio, and most cable co. have Sci-Fi w/ Mono Audio.
You can tell the difference when BSG is shown on UHD on late sunday nights.
Not just the PQ, but the Sound Quality is 100x better with full DD5.1 Audio + Stereo Seperation and audio background field.

You know, you may have hit on something here. I'll have to go back to the DVR, but I half remember a "god" reference in there somewhere, maybe it was when D'anna was waking up in the resurrection tank. Maybe that is where they are getting their "afterlife" experiences and believe they are encountering a "higher power".
To the best of my memory, I don't believe there's ever been an explanation of their theology. The easy one is that man was their creator, or god. But they rebelled, evolved and now have a new concept of creation. Maybe that's what she is trying to find---a creator beyond their creator.
As for Galactica being so easy to find, the more I think of it, the answer may just be an occam's razor explanation. There is a deep cover Cylon model on Galactica the way Sharon was who is consciously/unconsciously relaying the coordinates. Dee simple answer may be Dee right one.

I played back one of the scenes that had Adama talking (to Bill, I think); a particular word seemed to be edited. I'm guessing it was an expletive, and it wasn't frak!
He was talking to Bulldog and said something about being glad the Cylons didn't beat the "bullsh!t attitude" out of him.
Hounsfield 11-19-06, 06:46 PM Did anyone else think it was questionable of Adama to offer Tigh a drink at the end? Wouldn't that be like offering Lee a box of Krispy Kremes?

Yes i thought it was strange giving an alcoholic booze, but he could die any time so I'm sure vice is rampant throughout the fleet
Did anyone else think it was questionable of Adama to offer Tigh a drink at the end? Wouldn't that be like offering Lee a box of Krispy Kremes?
No,
Tigh needs to get "what he did to Ellen" off his chest, and the only way Adama was going to get Tigh to talk, was with a drink. This is a step towards Tigh getting back to his old self.
Just like Starbuck looking at herself in the Mirror and cutting the long hair off.
:)
Did anyone else think it was questionable of Adama to offer Tigh a drink at the end? Wouldn't that be like offering Lee a box of Krispy Kremes?
Adama's been dealing with Tigh's dependency since before the war, even Bulldog mentioned it. As long as Tigh can do his job, Adama won't care. Expecting Tigh to give up booze forever is unrealistic, and Adama knows that. Now that Tigh is willing to meet him and talk about it, things might return to 'normal'

ALSO...Bill is his friend. It was a simple drink(s) among friends. And "Bill the Friend" needed a drink as well. Very rarely do you see the Admiral have any kind of alcohol. It usually is plain water. They are also healing the riff between themselves. Alot of ground to cover. Over a year actually. It has been a very emotional ride.
Hounsfield 11-20-06, 05:15 PM Hmmm, some interesting viewpoints on alcoholism on this board... I hope none of you are commercial airline pilots, truck drivers, or oil tanker captains. :(
And I thought about the friend issue, but if Adama was truly a friend, he'd lock him up in the brig (yes, yes, with DT prophylaxis) and not let him come out until he was dry.... and if this guy can't do his job unless he's sauced, it's time for a new XO.
Ok... commence fire. :p

Considering it's a fictional show.... :-)
And it's not what Adama SHOULD do, or what we WOULD do, it's what would Adama do. And letting Tigh drink is pretty consistent for his character.
Workindood 11-20-06, 05:56 PM Also...there is such a thing as a "Functional Alcoholic". Where as if the alcoholic drinks the right amount then they are normal. No different then a <Enter Medical Condition Here> patient taking pain meds to become normal.
I myself take very strong pain meds for my chronic pain and that is exactly what it does is makes me normal...not all buzzed up. Anyone else that would take my prescription would be quite loopy....hehe

I myself take very strong pain meds for my chronic pain and that is exactly what it does is makes me normal...not all buzzed up. Anyone else that would take my prescription would be quite loopy....heheI think it's pretty safe to say that there's a real difference between taking narcotics to alleviate pain from an underlying medical condition (as in your case), and taking narcotics (or alcohol) to dull the pain of reality. We call the former a "patient", the latter a "drug addict".
And it's true that Adama has sort-of turned a blind eye (no pun intended) to Tigh's problems, but you'd think he'd seize upon this opportunity to once and for all convince his old friend that it's time to sober up. Instead, he feeds into Tigh's pathology and offers him a drink.
I'll concede that these human flaws are what make this show so great -- but I wish they'd further that realism by not showing Tigh return to "normal" in 2 weeks (ala Slimfast-Lee), but rather continue his downward spiral. I want to see him hit absolute rock bottom, and then, when he finally cleans himself up, come back stronger than ever before.

For people that do not have some sort of TiVo, PVR, or DVR this is a bad move.
Most people are getting ready for bed, due to school, work ect.
Viewership will go down. Bad Move SciFi!
Hmmm, I tend to disagree. More people are home to watch TV on Sunday nights. Friday night is one of the least watched nights of the week because people go out. So, I would think SciFi's aim is to lure people who usually DVR or 'iTunes' the show into watching it live.

No intent to insult anyone here, but BSG's demo doesn't really seem to be one that has a large percentage of it going out late Friday nights.

OUCH...Hey, geeks have lives too!
I DVR Galactica anyway, since the fiance won't watch it live with me...it won't really matter to me what night it's on.
So what exactly is BSG's demo?
If I were to guess, I'd guess predominantly male - 18-49 years old. The lower end of that age group is absolutely the "going out Friday night" type. I work with three guys in their 20s who never watch the show live because they always have plans on Friday evenings. They DVR it every week.

Of course you count. I love all BSG viewers! LOL And my guess of what the BSG demo is may be way off. But the one thing we do know is that advertisers covet the 18-49 demo. So, if many of those people will be better able to tune in on Sunday night than on Friday night, that's all the better.
I am not as upset about this time/day change as many people, but I think I do prefer the show on Friday night for my own selfish reasons. Still, how hard is it to adjust from watching something on Friday vs. Sunday? It's a couple days difference. If it does work and brings in higher ratings, it will be worth it.
The worst part of it will be that most Sundays I'll have to go to bed right after the show ends and won't be able to get online and discuss it ad nauseum. Who am I kidding?! I probably will get online and discuss it and then be like the walking dead at work the next day!
Chris Ruhl 11-22-06, 09:39 AM I agree. To be honest, I am usually not in the best of shape on Friday nights and usually have to remember to set my DVR or I end up missing it. Not too overly crazy about the Sunday time slot either, but it beats Fridays.
Still a bit confused why they can't reshow it twice a week. A Tuesday or Wed at 10 would be nice too.

LOL apparenty you weren't the only ones. When they filmed the episode with the Orion slave girl (green skinned), the dailies kept coming back with the girl having natural skin tones, not green. They couldn't figure it out, so they contacted the development lab and the techs thought the green skin was an exposure issue and kept correcting it.
These days we dont' blink an eye at green skinned half naked babes, but back then it was something weird lol
EDIT: Can't remember the name of the book I read that in...I wasn't born the year it first aired.

It was The Making of Star Trek. Great read! There was also a wonderful quote from Roddenberry about how the network censors said they could not show the underside of a woman's breast, and his reply was something like, "Why, do they think there's fungus growing down there?"
And in the very second episode of The Next Generation he showed Denise Crosby wearing an outfit that showed...the undersides of her breasts!

To answer your question...yes! In fact I have to respectfully disagree with you. This was one of the best episodes. No big special effects...didn't need them. You never do when there is a good story to tell. It had everything in it that makes for great story telling. Acting, directing, writing. The writing is so phenomenal it amazes me how they are going to top it week after week. But they some how do.
I thought the fill in the blanks style for the back story was done well.
Adama was dead on with his speech. That is what makes him a great leader. He adimits his mistakes and learns from them. Then moves on.
Also the music was perfect too.

SPOT ON! This was a very good episode tonight. Once again, very well writen.
It was absolutely Battlestar Titanic, during that party/dancing scene. Complete with the perspective spinning/dancing shots. Obvious reference.
Liked the episode a lot, but it's not really a favorite. I think this ep benefits from a re-watch, which I did when it re-aired tonight. Roslin and Adama were totally high! Loved the way they reacted after Gaeta left. They are so natural together. Love those two.
I am not a Starbuck/Apollo 'shipper at all, but I am glad to have the "why do they hate each other" 'mystery' behind us. Let's move on, shall we?
I have no idea why I like Starbuck. She is totally reprehensible. I think it is her vulnerability, but her utter refusal to show it or admit it. Apollo, on the other hand, just bores me as a character for the most part. I loved him saving Daddy in Exodus Pt II, and he's had a few other nice moments, but generally, he's kind of a wimp, isn't he?
Chris Ruhl 12-02-06, 09:14 AM Ok, I admit I did like the Adama/Rosyln thing, but the part about Starbuck just up and getting married the next morning just kind of bugged me. I used to like her character, but now she just kind of annoys me for some reason, I think for the exact reason you state above. And I'm with you Apollo.....
I don't know, it was just a bizzare episode that I didn't particularly care for. I should have taped it and did a rewatch. The Adama speech...that was the high point.

We've often mentioned that Starbuck is damaged goods. That was just more proof.
archiguy 12-02-06, 11:20 AM The thing about Starbuck that makes her such a great pilot (and such an expert in all aspects of soldiering, for that matter) is this need to live out there on the edge. She's an adrenaline junkie. Then, when she fell in love with the kid that she thought was hers, she was finally ready to change, settle down a bit, be more responsible and dependable. That was taken away from her; now she's more on the edge than ever.
Great ep, by the way. All good stories are character-driven, and this is no exception. An episode like this is a way to get to know these characters a little better, and that makes the stories better. And, from the looks of next week's ep, they probably needed to marshall their vfx budget for the big finish. Does anyone know if next week is end of the half-season?

Yeah, but her leaving Lee in the scrubbrush minutes after declaring her love and getting hitched happened BEFORE the Casy incident. Is she still messed up over Zach? I thought that was resolved. I think it goes back farther than that.
She's self-destructive...like someone else said:damaged goods. But so is Lee lol.
Well, it was catchy, but for some reason it reminded me of a scene from Titanic. Weird.I noticed that too. The music/dancing/drinking scene was directly lifted from Titanic, which ironically, was on TNT last week. And for a minute there, I thought Adama and Roselyn were gonna hop in the sack. Anyways, this ep started out slow....but by its end, I was totally lovin' it.
optivity 12-02-06, 12:35 PM Anastasia is hotter than Kara. Starbuck is "damaged goods" and it's best for Lee to steer clear. But he's a glutton for punishment so I'm not too optimistic about his future.
Even without any Cylons, I found myself facinated by this episode. I enjoyed the LOST-style flashbacks to help fill some gaps in the character's history together and more of their settlement process on New Caprica before the occupation.
Complex, realistic characters and relationships is a big part of what makes this show so great. I loved Adama and Rosilyn getting high together! I think it showed both their true affection for each other and also how Adama started to relax and get out of war mode - what he later regretted in his speech.
Even a BSG filler episode is far superior to just about anything else out there.

I can see your point...I don't want to build a library of either format just to see the other gain supremacy and leave me in the cold.
However, as a new Xbox360 owner I can definitely see myself dropping another $200 (Edit: MS has released an add-on HD-DVD player that can be had for $200) and then getting my HD-DVDs via Netflix so I'm not too heavily invested but can still enjoy HD movies.

Now thats doable since you already have the xbox another $200 not so bad, I though the same thing using netflix is the way to go, I just cant justify $550 for a ps3 for just movies in my case, I'm not into games. At this point I wouldn't even spend $200 on a stand alone blue ray unless it did both formats, I know stand alone is $1000
jonnyozero3 12-08-06, 02:58 PM Yeah, I heard BSG Season 1 is coming out on HD-DVD. That alone may push me over the edge - I can handle spending under $500. Plus, there seems to be a change of tone lately that is more positive towards HD-DVD. Nothing scientific, just an impression I'm getting from reading articles and such.
archiguy 12-08-06, 06:18 PM I've got all the DVD sets, including caving in to the extortion of putting S-2 on two different sets w/each costing the same as one set ought to, and with my Marantz DVD upconverting player, it still looks pretty good. I can wait for the HD optical format war to sort itself out; I'm sitting this one out.
jonnyozero3 12-08-06, 06:46 PM I think next year I'll help it sort out by buying a Tosh :)
beeper917 12-08-06, 07:22 PM Last weeks was a waste hoping tonights is better
MOREPOWER 12-08-06, 09:17 PM I think last week was great, if you want star wars every week get the DVD.
What do Cylons eat? they're biological, couldn't the humans capture cylons and have a roast, maybe they're greasy synthetic like.
Last week was a great episode.
So was tonight's.
Apollo removed as CAG
well acted again by all.
This episode looks like a lot was edited out however.
petergaryr 12-08-06, 10:01 PM Wonder what D'Anna is actually seeing "between".
I think that was by far the weakest episode I've ever seen of BSG...which is surprising that it came from Jane Epsenson...
I did not feel any desperation that came with an entire lack of food supply (*cough* rehash of Water from Season 1)
I did not feel anything from these people risking their lives for the human race...it just didn't have that live or death feel to it...
It was also incredibly disconnected...the episode felt choppy and not well put together...it also did not setup the mid-season finale at ALL...
I'm sure everyone loved it...I thought last week was leaps and bounds better than this one
MOREPOWER 12-08-06, 10:37 PM I agree it wasn't very good, acting was good but it did look like it was edited badly.
I also dint feel like they were hungry enough, what were those "crackers soilent green" harvest algae yuk reminds me of a 70's sci fi flick soilent greeen is people, cant remember the name (my Alzheimer's). I thought the best part was Apollo almost giving Kat a lip lock. you can only hope :D
