Color, could this be powerline induced, or are there any obvious video "artifacts" that you run across in production that would fit this description?
I am going to write down the conditions where I notice the thin stripes. I want to repeat that they are very faint but noticable from 10 feet if you look for them.
They appear on different programs so they are not a production artifact - as far as I know. I do not know if they are related to just the sat receiver but I will find out (component versus HDMI makes no difference). I do have a good power line filter.

I've been all over this TV, patiently following both this thread and the "jumps" thread for months. Boy, being patient in a mature way is overrated, ya know? :)
Cheers!
Congrats, Joel. I know you've been standing on the sidelines (er, in the well :)) ready to play (er, argue :)). Now there will be at least two Q006's in Carmel Valley -- eat your heart out Denzel ;) Maybe sometime we can hook them up side-by-side and have a Q012 or 140" Qualiavision :D

Do you guys have a Carmel Valley around San Diego?
The only one that I knew of was south of Monterey.
I must get out more.

I don't recall the shows - I didn't spend much time watching them.
In a related fashion.
All of the HD channels that I watch on CBS (Adelphia cable) are absolutely pristine…esp. CSI Miami. – with the exception of NCIS which was on last night.
Well, last night while watching it, I just couldn’t take the graininess of this show any longer…..soooooooo I opened up the Qualiavision bag of tricks……(I’m in Pro mode) and I set the Noise reduction to medium (normally I leave it “off”) – which squelched the graininess but softened up the pic too much for my taste – sooo I cranked the sharpness up to 35 and viola……..
NCIS was now *almost* as good as the other HD shows I watch on CBS.

JB -- I like the notion of a 140" qualiavision but I think we need two more for that! Once we both have ours going, though, Carmel Valley is going to be lit up like the Luxor pyramid in Las Vegas! :) Oh, and I don't stand in the well -- or anywhere else near a courtroom -- if I can avoid it. I did almost get picked for a criminal jury 2 weeks ago -- I was the prosecution's sixth peremptory. Mistake for them. Mostly I do transactions and regulatory counseling.
Yes, Penton-Man, there is a Carmel Valley in San Diego. It's where all us cool people live. lol But we don't have Clint as our mayor. And yes, you do need to get out more .... but then you wouldn't be watching as much TV on your Q!
I am glad you don't see any banding. That would be a shame. I wonder if it's a calibration issue. Sounds like it is visible on programming which is odd and very unfortunate. It does concern me. Of course, naturally it would come up the day I order my set ....
Sirjay, looks like you and I will be "third wavers" -- 2-3 weeks out, methinks. I am on vacation next week so it won't be as hard for me to wait.
Cheers!
timc1475 03-23-05, 08:14 PM Hi everyone this is a very informative site and i spent the last few days taking in about 18hrs. of thread. I want to know if anyone purchased the 006 from other dealers and if a price point less than 13k is possible?
I just ordere a Sony computer with the ATI Radion 800xt grafix card. I understand that it outputs DVI and component video for HD viewing. I checked out the wmv HD dvd's for sale on windows media website.
I cant wait to see these dvd's on this set in the near future.Below are min. system requirements:

Just for yucks, check out this post (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=4948747#post4948747), wherein AVSREADER posted, "Pure Conjecture garbage (or knowledge?). Sony SXRD 70" TV early February for $11,000. I'll stick with the knowledge. Model number unknown at this time. I guess we will find out who's right after early February."
This was in response to Penton-Man's post there would NOT be a rebadged 006 selling for thousands less in February or March.
Well, who was right? (I guess we still have another 8 days until the end of the month :))
P.S. A pat-on-the-back of myself, as this is post #330 and I am celebrating my 4 year anniversary here on AVS Forums :D
timc1475 03-23-05, 08:42 PM 1.Has anyone heard of the samsung dlp's comming out in june 05' doing 10,000 to 1 contrast ratios? And are they REALLY 1920 by 1080p capable ?
(i inderstand they use wobulation, now thats a word...)
2.I had the Toshiba 57hlx82 LCOS 1080p and have waited all this time for a sequel 1080p set to appear, i sure missed it as it was carted off last year due to the infamous blue flaming on bottom left corner chip burn in ,but i did get my 7g back. Thanks to you folks on here i got info on the buyback.
Good to know the 006 uses an inorganic panel not subject to burn in .
2. I have seen so far 2 internet sites offering the 006 for 10,995.00 and 10,700.00 ( do a google) i called Qualia at 877-782-5423 and i was told Qualia would honor the 3yr. warranty no matter who i bought it from even not authorized dealers...any input on this b4 i melt the visa guys?
3.Seeing the delevery problems ive read on the 006 it is a GREAT idea to camcorder the fiasco in case of ....problems.I remember when i took delevery of the 57hlx82 from one call the salesman said me and a bud could get a curb side delevery & save money and that we 2 could get the elephant into the house n/p...lol not it was a humbling experience and i am a good size guy in good shape. I'll be sure to be on the horn daily with the delevery peeps the send more than 2 guys ....i hate humble pie!
4. I was told today there are x amount of 006's in CA. in a warehouse that will be parted out soon, so i just may "pull the trigger" too.

Well,
I guess technically he could be considered remotely correct if you list the Model number as DocDVD.
What say you second wavers?
And third wavers for that matter?
No matter, I am extremely happy with the 006 at MSRP and ESPECIALLY when it was delivered - as it fit perfectly into my timetable- as I'm sure it did yours.:)
And isn't THAT what it's really all about?
Something these 006 naysayers just can't seem to grasp.
Penton-Man 03-23-05, 09:34 PM Just a tidbit to keep everything into prospective.....
As of March 1st, about 214 people have "taken delivery" of their 006's since its debut.
Since it's now toward the end of the month, I'd guess about 350 or so have actually "taken delivery" at this time.
Does that still make us "elitists" or are we like the "regular guy" in the Washington Mutual commercial ???
All 214 are factory plants. :)

CowboyBFD 03-23-05, 11:05 PM As I mentioned in a previous post, my Qualia 006 was purchased in NYC on Jan 4th and delivered within two weeks. It was delivered at 7pm in the middle of a Baltimore snowstorm and had to be brought down 16 icy, concrete outdoor steps to get into the basement. The moving company supplied by Qualia sent four guys and they struggled but got it in with absolutely NO issues...
I have now mastered the Qualia 006... including how to do picture and picture AND picture... standard TV signal on one side and the other side hooked to Comcast HD while using their dual tuner PIP in the 2nd window...3 pictures at once!
My custom made entertainment center now nicely displays the 006 in all its beauty...
I have had NO "lines", no issues, no nothing (except problems from Comcast - imagine that!)
My one question concerns a sound system. I am looking to build a sound system for the 006 that will be in the same league without being in the same cost league! I love the Velodyne 15" subs, have a liking for the Onkyo receivers TXNR802 or TXNR901, but I am totally hung out to dry for speakers. I like the 7.1 concept but don't see a lot a 7.1 content out there...5.1 seems to be the "norm" right now...Not knowing much about sound, my assumption is that if I get a good sub like the Velodyne, I could cut back on the speakers some since they wouldn't be relied on for "bass power" Can somebody recommend a speaker "line" to look into. I have tried this post on the speakers forums but no one has given me any great advice...I have a LARGE room 25' Deep x 50' long...
I hear good and bad about Polk speakers, mostly good about Cambridge Soundworks for bookshelf and surround but not fronts (pricey!), and little about anybody else...Help please!?!
Reply to CowboyBFD:
I was very impressed by the line of ribbon speakers made by Martin-Logan. The line includes both floor-standing and wall-mounted models. The floor-standing units are not that large. BTW, although I do not have a surround sound system, I do have the Velodyne DD-15, along with Magneplanar 3.6Rs, for my home stereo. I have the subwoofer in a corner of the room (which, by the way, IS the proper location for a subwoofer, for the smoothest possible response -- take it from me -- I have a PhD in acoustics). What makes the DD series so valuable is the built-in system for adjusting the response at the listening position. It's very easy to use. Dipole loudspeakers like the Magneplanars are notoriously difficult to mate up with a subwoofer. With the DD's built-in measurement and display system, I have been able to adjust my stereo so that the frequency response below 200 Hz is now flat to 20 Hz within +- 1 dB. To accomplish this, in fact, I have the crossover frequency of the subwoofer set to its lowest value (10 Hz, as I recall) and the gain adjusted so that the rolloff of the Magneplanars is compensated by the rollon of the subwoofer. Listening to the subwoofer alone, you hardly hear anything from it, unless there is a very low frequency signal. Of course, with smaller main speakers, the subwoofer gain would have to be higher, and the output would be more noticeable. But I'm rambling. If i were to put together a 5.1 or 7.1 system from scratch, I would look at the Martin-Logans. But I love ribbon loudspeakers. Others I would look at: Canton has a nice series -- maybe the number is 600; I have a pair of Definitive Technology Mythos 4s for my TV -- they're OK -- they're tall, thin, and black, but they don't sound as good as the Martin-Logans.

Have you gotten official word that you are off the A list. It has come down to eenie meenie miney mo............one of the five has got to go. Maybe we are all off the A list and back to waiting. I'm sure it's all Sycore's fault.
100 Qualia sets on the wall......100 Qualia sets. Take one down, pass it around, 99 Qualia sets on the wall........... I'm melting...........melting.
FilmMixer 03-24-05, 02:02 AM Another fanboy round of props goes out to Josh at DocDVD...
Oredered my stand from him on Monday morning... got it today, Wednesday! Utah to California 1 1/2 days.. BAX Global rocks!
Just another reminder to the others buying from him... The set and the stand came on a truck with one driver and a lift.... They will take the set into the garage or anythere else their dolly can get it to. Then you are on your own... I spent a good hour tearing down the Qualia and stand boxes today... fun fun fun :) Not to rub it into anybody, but asking my friends to come help me move it into the house was a small price to pay compared to his prices... I am still under 12.5k for the set and stand delivered, and I need the exercise! I don't know how long Josh will keep these prices like this, but for those fence sitters..... Josh has been fantastic!!!
EDIT: Ignore the above... I think that BAX is not who Josh is using for all of the dleliveries.... Sorry for the panic..... Nothing to see here.... Move along....
I'm embarassed, but American Idol is amazing to watch on the 006!!! Fox has been doing a great job with their content this season...
The stand is beautiful!!!!

If you're interested in value in speakers, and less concerned about looks, studio speakers might be a good solution.
Beyond that, I'd recommend listening to speakers, to see what you like. Focus on natural sounding voices, since you're going to be using them for home theater. Don't focus on bass, since the DD will fix you up there. That will save you a lot of money. 1-way "full-range" speakers sound like crap. Get 2-way or 3-way speakers (either can sound very good). Focus on the center speaker, since that's where most of the sound comes from.
Avoid speakers that are harsh sounding. Some speakers have exaggerated treble, in order to sound "really clear" in the store, but they will cause fatigue when you listen to them for extended periods. It's the equivalent of high color temperatures on TVs.
If you have a very large room, and you're concerned whether a DD15 will give you enough power, a single DD18 should be enough for just about anything.
5.1 surround is a big step up from fewer speakers. Adding speakers from there will only make a minor difference.

noticing them with the standard setting but they may be there in pro
mode as well. The lines are thin vertical stripes and are noticable as very
small changes in shade. It is only a problem if you keep trying to look
for them.
Has anyone else noticed this?
I assume the vertical lines you had were very obvious.

I wouldn't describe them as very obvious. Now that I notice them, I often find them distracting, though. They are pretty easy to see on medium grays, like the backgrounds on the the menus. Maybe my lines are more intense than yours.

Well that's odd. I specifically asked Josh about that when I first ordered and he replied that the delivery includes "white glove service", meaning bringing it inside and physically setting it up (but not connecting up cable boxes and such).
I don't have a garage, or any other secure place to put it and I am sure not going to leave a five-figure television sitting on my front lawn overnight!
Hopefully it's just a case of certain locations/contractors can offer inside delivery service and others can't.

Can you recommend an itinerary for Death Valley flower viewing? Where are the good spots to go?
I'm on my once-a-day check of this forum. In an e-mail from Josh, yesterday afternoon, He confirmed that mine was in the "second wave" and that it might be as late as Monday arriving in SLC. In an earlier phone call regarding delivery, he said his shipping firm would deliver "inside", but would NOT unpack. As regards P-M's question about the "second waver's" feelings, I was on full **** and almost pulled the trigger at the LV Qualia store during CES; but I was still "fracked off" (to quote Battlestar Gallactica) about the price increase and used the Direc TV announcement about MPEG 4's effect on the HD Tivo unit to decide to wait a while. DocDVD's price saved me about $4K, including the stand and no sales tax; and so I just didn't have any more excuses. Was the money saved worth the extra 10 weeks? I won't know until I get the set and see what I've been missing. But, after all, it's " only TV " and the money I've "saved" will buy a new Martin-Logan Descent subwolfer and the HD Tivo unit (which makes me dependent on the kindness of Direc TV when their MPEG 4 HD DVR is released). So P-M, you are one of the "Iron Men" of motorcycling. I was an AMA roadracer (National Number 106) back in the early 60's and I have nothing but respect for Trialers, especially ISDT'ers Ted

I cannot see them on the menu grays. I would not describe them
as lines because they do not have well defined borders. I did not see them
last night on the HDD Iraq special. I think I need to get a test DVD.
Does anyone recommend a test DVD that will fill the screen with extensive graduations of color and gray scale?
Dilbert1
For CowboyBFD. I will echo prfssr regarding the Martin Logan sound system. I have a large room, also. I started with matched Mirage omnipolar speakers for front left and right and center (matched sound), and Mirage omni-sats for side and rear (7.1). The room just swallowed the sound. I used Tweeter's one-year trade-up policy to change to Martin Logan Ascents for Left and right, and the Theater for the center; with amazing results. The speakers fill the room and imaging is perfect. The bass is quite good from them, alone, for music; but I am using my older NHT SW-3P (12", sealed box) for a subwolfer and it really gives movie soundtracks and sci-fi a kick. I'm going to upgrade to the Martin Logan Descent sub, because I am so happy with the fronts, and put the NHT at the rear of the room. The M L speakers require an amp with good current capacity and my Harmon Kardon AVR 8000 does a good job. I agree with you about the lack of 7.1 source material, so I've wired the sides and rear on each side together (as is done in theaters), for the time being. The new HD DVD media are enabling new audio codecs which will offer discrete 7.1 (and greater) sound and I'll be ready. The comment regarding the availability of parametric room equalization in the Velodyne subs is very valid, but I'm looking to the next generation of receivers to have this capability. It's already in the Yamaha RX-Z9, but it doesn't have enough bands in the low frequency range. My next receiver will have the HD audio codecs, multiband parametric room optimization, and the Realta "Teranex scaler-on-a-chip". To get back to being close to "on topic", I think my sound system is commensurate with the Q006's picture; and, to agree with FLMIXER, I think the sound makes the movie. I just won't watch a movie without a decent sound system. Ted

First of all, get there within the next week or so according to the park rangers. The flowers will soon be fried in the blast furnace heat - it's already warming up, but still quite pleasant.
You can enter the valley from the south coming north from Baker and you'll see wildflowers on the downslope of Jubilee Pass before entering the valley - LOTS of them! Huge fields up there - mind boggling! Once you're on the valley floor it's almost non-stop wildflowers on the alluvial fans to the immediate east of the road, especially from Badwater to Furnace Creek. Further north, there are lots of flowers a few miles east of Stovepipe Wells and the sand dunes, and occasional sightings further north toward Scotty's Castle. The biggest wildflower displays are the southern section between Furnace Creek and Badwater. Be sure to take a stroll in the new salt lake at Badwater. It's only a foot or so deep, but there hasn't been water there in modern history.
It will be nearly impossible to get reservations at either of the Furnace Creek properties, except maybe weekdays. I've never seen so many people in Death Valley, all because of the publicity on the flowers. I made reservations weeks ago on my intution that there might be an exceptional display this year. I don't need much of an excuse though - Death Valley is a perennial favorite destination for me - one of the most beautiful places on earth in my opinion. If you can't get a room at Furnace Creek, you might have better luck at Stovepipe Wells. Be sure to spend the late afternoon after 3pm or so on the sand dunes - an experience you won't forget.
If you're an AAA member, be sure to get their Death Valley map before you go - very detailed - it's a keeper.
Watching the HDV video I shot on the Qualia 006 is the next best thing to being there. The experience far surpasses other video and stills I have shot in Death Valley in an attempt to bring the magic of the place home with me. I only wish I had shot more HDV. Longer duration shots on a tripod would have been better. I didn't expect HDV to look so good on the Q006.

Wouldn't you know it. My TV sales company ABT Electronics, Glenview, IL

So my 006 is to be delivered April 7th. Guess I am in the second wave.

We have 1 100% confirmed coming in uncalled for(we got billed for it, so we know its shipping and coming in)(1-3 weeks).(We have actually gotton 3 in so far already but were pre-spoken for)
BenDover 03-24-05, 05:10 PM I was just about to pull the trigger and walk to the NYC Qualia showroom to order the 006 and stopped here to see any late breaking news. I couldn't help but notice one post indicating that DocDVD saved a member roughly $4K. While I'm ready to pull the trigger with the MSRP, that $4K could come in very handy in paying for the receiver that I also need to purchase.
Would someone mind PM'g me some price information on the 006 through other outlets other than directly from Sony Qualia.

Man that was fast !
When using HDMI at 480i you should expect to have to change two items from the factory defaults you get when you load the 59avi settings of "HDMI Direct" mode into a Memory. First, change HDMI Color Adjust from Standard to Enhanced. Second, change Black Setup from 0 to 7.5. Again, this is *ONLY* reported as necessary for HDMI 480i.
This combination is supposed to be necessary to preserve both Blacker than Black AND Peak White data properly at HDMI 480i.

thesirjay 03-24-05, 08:50 PM Quick ? on the Pioneer 59 avi... I definitely like hearing that you can get the blacker than black as well as dodging the Peak white data over HDMI... The main ? I have is does it seem like this will yield a better picture than the 300 somethings (I know not many of them will even support 480i over HDMI)? 800+ for a dvd player is a chunk of change but heh whats another small stream when I have unleashed the Qualia floodgate :) I just want to make sure I am not bothering with a machine whose main advantage is in its upscaler for instance.
OK...still reading here.
Got a call this afternoon. A Portland Sony dealer got 2 006's in today. They are setting one up NOW.
Film at 11!!
Cover me, we may be "going in"!
Two quick points.
First, on the DVD player, I don't plan to spend much on the SD DVD player until the Blu Ray/HDDVD thing shakes out a bit. I am inclined to go with the Sony. I think the Arcam DV 79 is a good unit too but that's a lot of cash for a short run, IMJ. Enough is enough, at least for me. I gather they have fixed the Sony 975 firmware ...
Second point: Have you all checked out the "Qualia 161 pages" thread? Some folks don't seem to believe that this set is what it is cracked up to be and are taking it personally that we all didn't buy 9" CRT RPTVs.
Cheers

Dilbert1 03-25-05, 12:33 AM Just finished watching "The Incredibles" and not a hint of any stripes - just a beautiful picture.
Perhaps what I was seeing was caused by the Dish Network receiver. Or perhaps it was caused by a difference between the two HDMI inputs. As far as I know there should be no difference as far as the video is concerned on the two HDMI inputs.
The problem is that if I don't write down the conditions under which I observe things then it becomes almost impossible to make sense of it later.

I bought my Sony 975 from an internet vendor in January for a great price. Not one problem with mine...yet. Not sure if currently available units have the new firmware that fixes the problem that some people have had. But again, I have had zero problems with my 975 and love it. P.S.: the 006 does not accept 1080p. That's one fly in the 006 ointment for PC users. Sony did just announce an expensive upgrade to 1080p for 004 users and there's a *rumor* of a possible firmware upgrade in the future for the 006 but nothing of substance. For now, assume the 006 will accept 1080i only.
Cheers
I have a few of the wmv-hd dvd's that look very good on the 006. on my htpc I select 1080p as the resolution (your pc needs to be able to handle it) and then set my graphics card to 1080i. This has been the best pq source so far for me. I also have a couple of d-theater tapes and some hi-rez images that look very good. The ideal setting for most films would be for the 006 to accept 1080/24psf (which the 004 accepts without any upgrades) but I have not been successful yet. I would recommend nvidia for your graphics card for the htpc. It seems to be more hdtv friendly.

has anyone gotten a cablecard to work with the 006? if so, were you able to record any of the cable channels via the 006's i-link to a d-vhs deck like the jvc?
I recently got a jvc 5u d-vhs deck and posted a question about hdcp issues via the hdmi cable but have not gotten any responses. I've played with the deck a bit more and noticed that when I connect the jvc via the i-link cable, I am able to play the d-theater tapes without any "303" errors. I have a feeling that the 006's hdmi's hdcp handshake does not work with the jvc 5u hdmi port. However, it looks like I can record and play via a single i-link cable. Does anyone have any additional thoughts on i-link and any devices with their 006? I do not yet have the comcast 6412 nor their cablecard but I do plan on getting them eventually. How do those with the 6412 connect to their 006?
thanks for any input,
jp

I haven't had any problems connectiong iLink devices to my Q006, including my new 15" Apple Powerbook. The TV recognizes the iLink devices and accepts audio/video with no problems. But I don't prefer to watch my JVC 40000U DVHS machine or Comcast 6412 DVR that way because the onscreen menus of those peripherals are not visible via iLink connection. I have both of those peripherals connected to the Q006 via component cables. The Sony 975 DVD player is the only device connected to the TV via HDMI, without any problems.
Due to the occasional double picture problem I had connecting the 6412 to the TV via DVI/HDMI, I opted to connect the Comcast box to the TV via component cables. I can't see the slightest improvement by connecting the the Comcast box HDMI digital way, and the component connection is completely free of the apparent handshake/double-pix HDMI problem.
I don't think it's possible to use both Comcast cablecard and dual-tuner DVR. I'm not sure I understand what, if any, advantage there is with using cablecard. If there was no external DVR I can see the advantage of one less box on the TV stand. But since I am using the DVR, what's the point?
By the way, I finally did a brief test connecting my Powerbook to the TV via DVI-HDMI and it works perfectly. The computer and the TV are fully compatible, and the "displays" setting of the computer shows up on the TV as 1920x1080. It's possible to use the TV as a "mirror" (duplicate) of the computer's LCD display or as an additional screen to widen the computer desktop. That's a bid odd though since it's necessary to drag items from the computer screen off to either the left or right (depending on display preference settings). I prefer the mirror mode for now, but I'll play with it further.

colortv,
Thanks for your input. With regards to cc and 6412, one theory is that the cc may give better pq. I currently have d* and would like to get the best pq possible from all sources. I figure it would be easy enough to try and see for myself which looks better and then I could always return the cc if there is no difference. I understand what you mean with the osd of the jvc via component. I also have the jvc connected via component because I couldn't get the hdmi to work properly. My pc also works via a dvi-hdmi cable to the 006 but I don't think there is any hdcp involved. I see a lot of incompatabilities between devices that are supposedly all hdcp compliant.
timc1475,
I also had the toshiba for about 2 years before toshiba bought it back from me. I got hooked on 1080p. The 006 is a nice upgrade.

PM,
If you happen to be in the market for a new a/v processor, you might want to look into the new denon 4806. It's not out yet but should be shortly. This would also take care of your digital device switching needs. This device should also do a nice job of cleaning up the audio via their multEQ room correction processing. denon released their beast of a processor, the 5805, but I couldn't fit it into my av rack nor within the sony stand! I know your waiting on the arrival of BD or HD DVD but denon also makes a really nice dvd player in the 5910. I may get this player also and see how it compares to a nice htpc setup. I can't imagine the pq would be better than the htpc but it's worth a test. The combo of the 5910 and 4806/5805 also stream line the multi-channel audio side with firewire connections/denon-link. When will it ever end!

I have a theory on this that I plan to test when my set arrives.
If you generate a test pattern in 1920x1080 with alternating black and white horizontal lines, you should be able to see the difference between the bobbing and weaving methods. My theory is that the weave method will look like fine horizontal stripes, roughly the same as it would on a PC monitor (which is always progressive); and that the bob method will make the entire 70" screen flicker so harshly that it would put both Pikachu AND the Amiga to shame. Another possibility is a medium gray screen that would tend to indicate a blending of even and odd lines--I suspect certain DRC and sharpness settings could cause this. You could either feed the picture from a PC via HDMI or load it on a memory stick--assuming that the picture itself doesn't get corrupted by the JPG format.
So if anyone cares to try it before I get a chance to, go for it. Otherwise I'll report back my findings, well, someday . . . . :(

I almost got one when I had my Sony 70" LCD RPTV, because it had only one DVI input. I didn't need it any more since the Q006 had two HDMI inputs. One for the sat box and one for the DVD player.

i have a SA8300HD, VOOM, HTPC and DVD player hooked up to the gefen...no problems.
mind you, i'm not speaking of having this connected to a qualia, haven't gotten that yet...waiting to get an invoice for that....oh, the SA8300HD has hdmi out so i have an hdmi to dvi adapter on the cable box connected to the dvi cable running to the gefen.
gefen was expensive but when you consider that the price included high quality dvi cables, it seemed pretty reasonable.

See,
The reason I ask is that I believe that I read in the Gefen product description awhile ago something like…
"This product will ONLY support digital video signals."
Now, since Adelphia cable(which I subscribe to) sends out analog channels as well as digital programming over the cable lines…I was wondering what would happen if I hooked it up to the Gefen…..not to mention the fact that I don’t know how critical information like updates and firmware upgrades would be affected?
Anybody?
Anyone used this switcher with a cable set top box ?

The degree of blowing away I think will depend on their display settings as we all here have learned ......and naysayer lurkers should keep in mind.
As an aside, color, FINALLY a typical non-rainy, sunny BEAUTIFUL Socal weekend. I plan to take a sabbatical from Qualiavision – at least during the afternoon hours !:)

My guess: the Gefen is a DVI-D switcher and not a DVI-I (or DVI-A) switcher.
They have slightly different connectors--DVI-I has four extra pins and the cable won't fit into a DVI-D port.
Edit to add: Here's a site that shows the connectors (http://www.datapro.net/techinfo/dvi_info.html).
I'll check on the Gefen tomorrow. (Yawn)

BenDover 03-25-05, 11:14 PM Pento...the gefen will in no way interfere with updates, software, etc. to your cable box since it isn't in the path between your box and the cable co.
the cable box, if it is using the hdmi/dvi output, must be converting the analog channels to digital to be ouput over the hdmi/dvi ouput.
i know that pc video cards have the dvi connectors that support both analog and digital, but i think video components use digital only, at least if they are hdcp compliant...maybe i'm missing something.
anyhow, i think i'm on the list and should be taking delivery of my 006 ( i guess i can refer to it as "mini-bond" ... ok, bad joke, sorry) in mid april.
and for those curious minds, the screen name comes from my days of being pissed at my cable company (still am but it doesn't do any good :) ) and feeling like they are perpetually bending me over...you get the picture.
[EDIT: I just checked Gefen's site and my 4x1 DVI switcher lists the following in the specs:
DVI Input/Output Connector: Dual Link DVI-I ]

MotorMouth777 03-26-05, 12:24 AM Congrats Diver............... Is that a snorkel in your pocket or are you just really happy with the TV. Do tell us how wonderful it is. Is it better than diving naked with the Swedish Bikini Team?
I think my setup is going to work out very interesting. I am having to shoehorn the butt end of this 75 inch wide x 63 high monster into a 54x59 inch hole. (on a 16 inch platform) My best guess is about 10 inches will project out so its gonna look like one BIG mofo plasma hangin on the wall. Since I have removed my 60 inch Shitsubish I have to sit and stare at a very big and lonely hole until my new date arrives. LMAO I had to put a little 13 inch bedroom TV in the hole tonight just to watch stargate and Battlestar Galactica. Like watching TV on a cell-phone. Should have taken a picture of that for the archives.
I got to say that these last few days of waiting are the worst. I can just picture her...........out there on the highway..............all alone in that big truck.......I can feel the bonding already.

has anyone gotten a cablecard to work with the 006? if so, were you able to record any of the cable channels via the 006's i-link to a d-vhs deck like the jvc?
Re cablecards and the 006... There was a posting from "texas_buff" a few weeks ago who did this, in parallel with the moto6412 dvr from comcast. I pm'd him for details and found out that the installer used an Antronix CMC2002H 2 way splitter to go to the DVR and the cablecard. Apparently it didn't work for him after activation until he went to the cablecard menu and did a reset on the card. Plus, he made it clear that if you don't have at least 6.5db at the cable end pre-cc, it wouldn't work. He said that if you get a number of digital channels that say "standby" or something to that effect, it is typically caused by a low signal (and they won't check unless you tell them to).
From what he says and what I've read at least 3-4 times elsewhere, the PQ on the cc is going to be better than through the stb. I'm going to try it just to make it easier for my wife to channel scan. If it works, it works... if not, no big deal cause the Harmony880 ought to provide a pretty simple ui.
I'm not going to go the ilink route, since I'm planning on using the firewire port on the 6412 to my dvhs deck, and then component out of the jvc into the 006 (a la colortv's suggestion vis a vis the jvc's menus not being visible when outputting via ilink).
Note that another poster, (brt3) tried for hours with his installer to get this to work and couldn't. So... it'll be interesting to try it. If all goes well I'll get my opportunity to do this on Wednesday. My 006 is only 9 miles away sitting in a warehouse for the next three days and it should be delivered on Tues and comcast will be here Wednesday morning. Should be an interesting couple of days. (I'm getting a lot of exercise this weekend in anticipation of growing tubers in front of the new boob tube.)
Good luck!
kanebear 03-26-05, 02:34 AM So much for patience... I'm currently in Vegas on vacation with the wife. We were at Caesers Palace in the Forum Shops when a HUGE lightbulb went on over my head and I remembered that they had the 006 on display there NOT crammed in next to a 50" or 60" so she wouldn't see the size differential.
After dragging her kicking and screaming into the store, I finally got her sat down in front of the set. I was all set for a "It's just too large!" but she looked at it and said "That's beautiful"... I asked Gale to run something other than D* HD and heard "Oh, no, I don't want to see a trailer, I want to go look at (insert clothing store name here)". But when they fired up the trailer to 50 first dates (not even the best material) she sat down and watched the entire thing. So, we have a convert!
After clearing that final hurdle and getting the Spousal Stamp Of Approval (SSOA)... I called my Sony dealer up and got the bad news. According to him, Qualia are dribbling out like molasses in January to the indirect sales channel. Supposedly there's over 750 on backorder with under 500 being made per month. He has no idea WHEN my TV will be in. Now, if I knew date definite he'd have it in two months I MIGHT be able to hold out. But even though he thinks 6 weeks given the larger retailers out there that get priority it might be SIX MONTHS. Thus...
Today I went back to The Forum Shops and let the wife go look around. Thanks to this forum I remembered the 18 months same as cash offer. That definitely takes some of the sting out of having to pay full retail for the set.
I figured that if I was approved for a large enough line to buy the TV, I would get it. I was approved and bought the set on the spot. Now the hard part is in the waiting but at least I KNOW I'm getting it soon.

If its going to take 6 to 8 weeks from the Qualia store because the major retailers are now getting them, why not just get one from one of those retailers?????
As an aside, have you guys noticed that no one has had a major problem with their 006? The only person that did have a problem had his replaced in something like 3 or 4 days. I think this says a lot for this set.

Well, I figure you either postponed your delivery which allowed somebody else to get ahead of you in the queue….. or you made sure that DocDVD was in fact getting 5 units for the Fab Five (as was originally intended) by threatening him with a malpractice suit and reporting him to the DVD Board of Quality Assurance.
Zechman 03-26-05, 06:04 PM There is no way I would postpone delivery!

Unless of course you found out that due to some shipping snafu, one of the Fab Five would have been receiving one of those giant pigs from the Maryland State Fair instead of his 006......which was headed to some pig farmer in the central U.S.:D

I think I wrote that improperly... my local Sony dealer whom I normally patronize and would prefer to get the unit from told me he thought it'd be 6-8 weeks but could in fact be longer. The Sony area/regional manager (can't remember the exact terminology he used) had said that this was one product she WOULD NOT estimate a delivery time on and told him he should not be promising delivery dates. Thus, it could be LONGER than 8 weeks. Now... I'm in the process of setting up the HT room right now... the thought of waiting two months is torture!
So, with that in mind I purchased the TV from the LV Qualia store who quoted me a MAXIMUM of 30 days. So long as it hasn't shipped, I can always cancel the order. If my dealer gets it in early, I will buy his and cancel the Qualia store order. If not... well, you pays your money and you takes your chances!
As an aside... I went back one last time today to spend a bit of QualiaTime before winging my way back to Texas and Gael happily ran anything I wanted on the BluRay. IMO the best trailer they have is Resident Evil 2... I cannot WAIT to see that in High Def. Not the greatest movie but it is absolute eye candy.
So now my DVHS deck sits waiting forlorn for it's Qua-mate along with a library of tapes, ready for the watchin'. I've heard it said but I will reiterate: it's gonna be a friggin' LONG 30 days.
Well, we also got back from a Local dealer to spend some QualiaTime. Very nice. I do think that these dealers are wrong when they say Sony will not let them charge less than 13K. Anyway, he did say he had New series 975 DVD players and a great stand he would discount. I am supposed to hear what they will do next week.
P.S. They can now offer extended warantee's!
Film @11!
divedude, thanks for the pictures, they are great for us non-owners to see. Still no 006 in area to go and see so the pictures really mean alot. Please post some screenshots when you get a break from watching your new 006.
texas_buff 03-26-05, 11:23 PM Just thought I would mention after seeing the stand and your location. I got some 1/8 plywood, painted in flat black and put it on the back of the stand. Then I drilled 2' holes on each side to bring in cables. looks much better than seeing the wall behind of even worst, all the cables coming to the equipment. Also good to see Starpower has learned it takes 4 people - they did it with 2 (and I see them in the picture) and they almost tipped it over. Enjoy.
Not quite OT.
As I said we saw the Qualia's today...the 006 and 004. Anyway, the dealer has the Sony 975 DVD player as new stock and my deal will include one. I had heard that when using the HDMI cable the Qualia will not "stretch" the image. Is this true? I know some of you have this (PM?) and wonder if you are using HDMI and if there are any "best" settings for this?
TIA

I haven't figured out whatever the thank you puzzle is but lol I can hope its something good coming my way :)
MotorMouth777 03-27-05, 04:17 AM Allright Zechman, even Penton is vexed. I am glad your suprise is not new bedroom furniture and that you were offering to fall sleep with thesirjay watching your Q006 but I have puzzeled until my puzzler is sore. The suspense is thick................... now please share. I picture thesirjay laying awake at night, thrashing around..............scratching himself and hoping, hoping his set is now on the way thanks to you.
I keep trying to think but nothing happens.
thesirjay 03-27-05, 08:54 AM Heh motor glad to hear I am not the only one puzzled. Apparently we are all Watson's to his Holmes because I can't possibly see the clue string which leads to the solution. I haven't gone to the extreme of taking all his messages and attempting decryption algorithms yet but if the suspense goes on much longer I may have to, perhaps Zechman is a big fan of the bible code?
This is a longshot but have to toss it out there (assuming I am still on the X weeks path due to falling off the blasted "next boat"). Does anyone know of a store in a state adjacent to Minnesota that is displaying the Qual 006? The natives are getting restless (and Zech's bedroom furniture thread gave her ideas ack! but I think I can keep her under control by threats of dousing myself in gasoline). I am also more than happy to see one in its native environment should someone in that radius be interested in showing off (perhaps with a Qualia convert wife so she can hear "Qualia Speak" through a female dialect).
Thanks all and Zechman I forgive you if it really does turn out to be nothing good for me... we are both under alot of stress having been so sure we were in this wave then being told.. oops sorry the tide went out better luck next tsunami...
We will survive somehow (no matter how dull and painful that existence is) until we join the merry brotherhood (those lucky rats!) along with the rest of the Fab Five and our currently "submerged in the ocean of Qualia" sidekick Dive.

Lol I think this might be able to be quoted under the "Qualia Elitist" category. People bleed so much more vividly for my high definition viewing pleasure using the Qualia.
Zechman 03-27-05, 09:38 AM On Friday, I got an email from DocDVD stating that the next wave of 006's are on the way, and he expects to be shipping them from his store on Wednesday or Thursday and could I please send him a big fat wad of cash now.
That same night, I get a call from my local dealer telling me that his 006's are on the way and he expects to get them either late next week or early the following week--can't say for sure because he hasn't gotten tracking information from Sony yet, but expects it soon.
Oh, did I mention that I was on two waiting lists? :D
So since I had talked to my local dealer first, and since he had already ordered (and recieved) the Sony stand for me, and since he had agreed to price-match DocDVD (wasn't asking full 13K in the first place, anyway), and since he is now expecting to deliver at about the same time as DocDVD--give or take a day--instead of the end of April as he originally projected; [stopping to breathe] I cancelled my order from DocDVD. The whole reason for ordering from Josh was to get it sooner, and I was up-front with both him and my local dealer that I was also on the other's list.
To his credit, Josh was very cool about it, and I recommend him.
But it stands to reason that SOMEONE on DocDVD's waiting list just got bumped up to next week instead of next month. I was curious if thesirjay might have been the lucky recipient of this bump, but now that he's spoken up, I guess not.
But whoever the new drummer for the "Fab 5" is, he or she has ME to thank. :D

Q minus 2 weeks, and counting . . . .
marcsmul 03-27-05, 09:54 AM Hi Zech, mm777 and denton,
Based strictly on your input on the forum, (there are no 006's any where near where I live) I contacted DOCDVD aka Josh and made the plunge and purchased the 006.
Based on Josh's input I also ordered, a Lumagen: Vision Pro HDP Scaler, Sony 975, Pioneer Elite 56TXi and a KEF:KET 5005 Home Theater set -up.
The components should be starting to arrive next week and the Big Boy in two to three weeks. He had Number 5 remaining of his next 5 order delivery.
As advertised Josh was great to work with and he assures me of on or close to delivery date. He will also do the setup and calibration.
I owe my decision to your guys. Thanks.
Will keep you posted..........
NEED YOUR HELP AGAIN............
WOULD really appreciate YOUR input on viewing material that will really highlight the 006 Viewing experience. What and Where is the best place to buy it in the next few week.
Zechman 03-27-05, 10:02 AM And you're welcome. ;)

Wow - nice setup, man...
However, with the Lumagen in the chain, the 480i output from your DVD player will be processed twice (once by Lumagen; second time by Qualia, which processes even 1080i).
You should run a comparison by feeding the DVD input into the Qualia with and without the Lumagen to see if you really need the scaler. Qualia has a very good scaler already.

Zechman, that was absolutely a very nice thing you have done. In my book you have now officially joined the ranks of the first wavers in spreading Qualia cheer throughout the land. jb, penton, color, kaduku, sparkysj, nhey, jp2, brt3 et al Through their early adoption and feedback they drove many of us second wavers to hop the fence. Otherwise I probably would have bought another set and to this day I would have been wondering if I should have bought the Sony and was missing out on something.
Now you personally have tripled the Qualia pleasure. Once for yourself and second for one of us other lucky stiffs who now get their set that much faster. And third by reminding me that sometimes nice people do nice things just because its the right thing to do. You probably could have kept both orders and profited on the second as they are really in such short supply.
Applauding for the Zech..........................King for the day.

With my luck, Sony is going to issue me a tracking number for my set the same day my dealer calls me and tells me my (less than MSRP) set is there... as the old adage goes... walk the middle of the road, get hit by traffic going both ways. MUCHO grats on getting it...
Y'know, this has to be the first time I've ever been waitlisted and waited this long for a consumer electronics device... cars, yes... twice now. NEVER did I think I'd be doing this (two waitlists, etc etc) for a TV. And I know it's not just ANY TV but still... IT'S A TV! Oy vey.... and as when I got each auto in turn I'll probably want to spend the night curled up near my new child.

marcsmul,
This is indeed a very impressive setup you have. The only thing I notice is the match up with the 975 and the 56txi. The Pio is a great receiver with many features, notably the ability to connect via firewire, which is great for playback of SACDs and DVD-As (keeping it digital and less cables). I am assuming the 975 is just a dvd player. so you're limited somewhat if listening to music is you're thing. On the other hand, if you're just looking for a interim player until the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD gets here, then you've done the right thing. Yes, those Hi-Def players will have firewire connections and you have right receiver for them. Congrats on your purchase :D
Ken Stokes 03-27-05, 11:35 AM Well said Dwayne and happy Easter to you!
I was one of the first posters on the Sony Jumps thread but so far have avoided getting one. I'd need to get it down some stairs and would have to remove a banister before my wife removed me!
We are building and i'm setting up a room for an 004 but if there is money left I'll get an 006 for the activities room.
There is NEVER enough money:)

Here's a big ditto!!!!!
There was an article on HDTV Etc (April/May Issue) on 2005 CES highlights. Four 1080p TVs were mentioned. The TI 70' DLP RPTV, JVC 70" D-Ila RPTV, Samsung 70" DLP RPTV, and the Qualia 006. He rated both the JVC and the TI on the top of his list, though he did mention that both sets were well calibrated and in dedicated darkened rooms, which pictures do show that. The Ti even had a bias lighting behind it and was showing an animated show. The Samsung and the Sony were tied. Pictures show the Sammy and Sony in brighter conditions. The writer also admitted that the Sony was not calibrated well and that PQ was not that great and was probably due to the source material, so it (Sony) deserves another opportunity. Once again, comparisons really should be done side to side, with equal source material and calibrated before any judging should be made.
Happy Easter to everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
thesirjay 03-27-05, 11:53 AM Oh god... I sure hope its so I shot Josh a email this morning just now.... That would well lets just say rock! That is too cool that Zech managed to have two lined up and now perhaps I am in luck. Here is crossing my fingers but I hope "next" really means next as last week I got:
"Jason:
I just got word that the order is shipping in TWO segments. Your
television should be in the next week, and I should have a date shortly!
You are next."
So lets hope that means I am at bat! Or perhaps a better analogy: "Monsieur your deluxe accomodations are now ready for your viewing pleasure"
Divedude, thanks for the 411 on the Marantz remote. :) I like the bigger buttons and touchscreen too, recognizing the extra $$$.
Has anyone purchased an extended warranty for the 006?
I'm off on vk next week, so will be scarce for a bit.

Neo2005 03-27-05, 02:49 PM I am also confused concerning the IMAX thang. Here is the MS site. Has anybody played with this yet? Does MAC (Apple) offer anything similar?

Zechman 03-27-05, 03:43 PM The IMAX discs from Microsoft are special WMV media that you need a PC to play. I don't know if there's support to play them from a Mac or not. In either case, you'd need a graphics card with a DVI out set to 1080i resolution. The Qualia 006 does not accept any form of 1080p input, according to the manuals and as far as anyone has been able to determine empirically.
But a regular DVD player won't play them for you.
The only other pre-recorded HD sources are DVHS tapes, and a couple of folks here have gotten DVHS recorders from JVC--they're fairly inexpensive since it's a format that's pretty much on its way out. I'll let others who have them comment more. If the PC route is not your thing, then this may be your best bet for HD material to wow the missus.

Sports cars.
How many 006 owners have a sports car? I love riding in my Miata (M2)with the top down. Ever notice that as long as you keep moving at 30 mph or more, the rain never gets the inside of the car wet. Just don't stop or put that top up.. Those Japanese engineers and their clever windshield design. And 2 speed windshield wipers. WOW! Don't be afraid, If it is raining hard and you just can't see well enough to drive safely, just turn the wipers on. Sure its artificial and you get a better view without those wipers if there is no rain, but hey you live in southern California and have had a long winter of bad viewing conditions (rain). So just turn those wipers on. And don't fret about whether to use the high or low wiper speed. If you can't maintain a clear view on low speed, just turn the wipers to high. The owner's manual tells you how.
TIP. If it is raining only a little or is just misting, there is a hidden function, intermittent. You can just set an intermittent interval or control it manually! Way way cool.
Oh yea. I'm getting a shipment of 006's today. The table stand is already unpacked and in place for the store demo and the others have been long sold.
Why are 006's like Fritos? Because this month's supply is already all eaten and Sony is making a LOT more. In May, dealers will be swimming with them. April is another story and I don't think dealers will see anything until late April. But the BIG roll out will come in May.

I should have an opportunity to see a 006 for the first time in the next few weeks. I'd like to take a Accupel HD signal generator and filters with me to see what the 006 is doing with its color decoder(looking for red push) and floating black levels. As the dealer might not be too interested in allowing me to do these test, I was just wondering if you've had an opportunity to check these things out yourself. If so, what did you find??
thanks Mark. I am looking into the denon 5805/5910 combo and want to make sure that the hdmi/hdcp compatibility issues are known up front. It already looks like the sony 006 and jvc 5u do not play nice together and some question as to whether or not the cable dvr's dvi port works correctly with the 006. The goal is to streamline most of the connections via their digital interfaces. This seems to be a hit or miss type of game these days!

I highly recommend this DVD for Qualiavision ……and you may even be putting a few pennies into the pocket of our celebrity 006 owner if he had his agent write a shrewd contract.

Does anyone have any devices that flag the data via hdcp working correctly via hdmi with the 006? I have a pc that is connected via dvi-hdmi but it doesn't do any flagging so that doesn't count. I have a samsung 160 stb connected via dvi-hdmi but d* doesn't seem to be flagging either. Channel 201 on d* use to be used for testing hdcp but I'm not sure if they still do that. I have a jvc 5u dtheater tape deck that does not seem to work with the 006 via hdmi although the i-link connector works ok. I remember some folks on this thread had some strange double-image issues with one of the cable boxes. Does anyone have any of the cable boxes working properly via dvi/hdmi? Does anyone have the hd-tivo for d* working via hdmi on the 006? As more people get their 006's, we should start to get additional info on these issues. I am hoping that there is some folks that are using their 006 with these types of digital devices via their dvi/hdmi connections.

Hi jp2,
I have had the DirecTV HR10-250 (HD TiVo) connected to my Q006 via HDMI since 1/7/05 and have experienced no problems whatsoever.
Hello JB,
Thanks for that update. Do you know if the hd-tivo does any sort of hdcp handshaking/flagging of data? Have you had to replace your hd-tivo at all or has the 1 you have been without any issues the whole time. I've read about some hdmi connector issues with some of the older hd-tivos. Thanks again for helping me with this topic.

Nhey and I have come to the conclusion that this only happens if the channel on input 6 is set to a 720p channel – such as ABC-HD, FOX-HD or ESPN-HD.
Nevertheless, it is really a MINOR annoyance because all you have to do is change the channel once and then go back to the 720p channel and the double pic clears up instantaneously.
Addendum
The above is pure speculation on my part because I’m still trying to figure out how to plug in that damn power cord.:)
Penton,
I noticed something similar to what you are describing when I had my toshiba lcos tv. Gary Merson from the perfect vision was also testing the same tv at the time and doing an article on the whole hdcp incompatibility issue. He mentioned that the toshiba would not accept the handshake consistently. This was tested via d* and channel 201 at the time. What I noticed is that when I first switched to channel 201, I would get the "snow" screen and message that the tv was not hdcp compliant. I would then switch to another channel then back to channel 201 and it would then work properly.
What device were you using and did you ever try connecting to input 7?
thanks,
jp

I was using a Motorola 6200 set top box provided by Adelphia cable running a DVI/HDMI cable into input 6 on the 006.
I *think* nhey was running a different Moto set-top box into his input 6.
Never got around to trying input7 because it really wasn't a problem for me....much less so than pulling out the monster away from the wall and switching inputs.
Hope that helps.

Penton,
Thanks. I know what you mean about getting behind the beast. I actually placed some ceramic tiles underneath the front casters to level it a bit. Every time I need to get behind to mess with cables, i have to make sure the TV doesn't slide forward off of the tiles! I threw my back out when trying to lift the stand and TV while my wife slid the tiles back underneath the casters!
Here we go again.
I just checked with the Tweeters in Birmingham Alabama and found that now, they don't expect to have any on display. Too few to go around, I guess.
So, does anyone know of a dealer that will have one on display either in Alabama or any of its surrounding States.

Things are getting "very Close" here. I may have to just build a good shelf to place it on over the Q006. I like it on top anyway.
Dealer was not so sure of his 006's being sold...so he will call me back soon. Wait 'till I tell him next week that a B&M close to him is getting 6 next week. NOW how much are you willing to take? :D

I don’t know what you mean by inability “to stretch” the image ….. I see no reason why it wouldn’t display a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen movie properly. Perhaps jb or color or countless others here can confirm.
In regards to settings, it’s best to obtain the Digtital Video Essentials DVD to eliminate much of the guess work, uncertainty, and relying on other people's settings which can be hit or miss.
That said, or if you feel uncomfortable with DVE, or simply don’t want to hassle with it….one knowledgeable Sony DVP-NS975 owner who does not have a Qualia 006 but did hook this player up to a display that had been professionally calibrated prior to getting the player found out that in "memory" mode one can force BTB to appear and not crush white if the Brightness and Picture are both set to -2.
So, in summary, the quick set-up would be:
If using 480i via HDMI then
Brightness -2
Contrast -2
Color 0
Hue 0
This whole setting thing came up because Kris from the Secrets shootout says that this player won’t pass BTB over HDMI at the default settings and that you may have to do some tweaking to get that result.

OH, in case anyone wants to know...Wal-Mart did not have any 006's yet.
I will find my DVD post and resend...it is easy to get lost.
I luv Wal*Mart!:)
I go there all the time to buy DVD's .....as they have some good titles for half a strip of Penton Paper ($5.) and a full strip ($10).
Edited for length....I want this to be a righteous 200 pager.
:)
...but, you don't watch Wal-Mart DVD's on the 006 do you? :D
Also, someone had said that Sony TV's, including the 006 will not let you stretch a picture from a dvd hooked to the HDMI input.

I heard that Walmart sells 10% of all the DVDs in the US.
That's a lot of DVDs.

Have you had to replace your hd-tivo at all or has the 1 you have been without any issues the whole time. I've read about some hdmi connector issues with some of the older hd-tivos. Thanks again for helping me with this topic.
brgds,
jp
I have no idea about hdcp handshaking/flagging of data. I have two HD TiVo's and each of them has been replaced (free, without hassle) by D*. The first one had a hard drive that went bad after a few months, the second had the HDMI polarizing video issue. I'm happy to report, both are now working fine without any issues :)

Jim,
Did you try DocDVD in Atlanta on your prior question about where to view an 006. I'm not sure if he has any on display but it's worth an e-mail.

Mark,
I believe my 2004 SSR qualifies as a sports car and a convertible too.
Man divedude, exactly HOW many acres do you have ?????
And does that include the elitist Royal Gardens out back.
I suppose you have a mini pool just for mini-divedude too.:D
Well, maybe you can help reduce the TTD's by using items for STD's.
Got a call from my Q dealer a few minutes ago. Why does the phone ring every time I am pouring water in the French Press? :D
Working it out now...not sure just what will come of it. If they think I am going to pay 13K they have yet 1 more they can sell!

It is my pleasure to inform you that I can now begin posting those beloved boat videos again upon queue……”Where the hell is that damn boat!”
As I have been informed that Sony has stopped shipping by air.

I *think* nhey was running a different Moto set-top box into his input 6.
Never got around to trying input7 because it really wasn't a problem for me....much less so than pulling out the monster away from the wall and switching inputs.
Hope that helps.
JP2 and Penton and everyone else -
For those wanting some new "006 information" here goes:
I just verified that the double-picture problem is NOT due to any glitch with the 006 but is a problem with the Comcast MOTO 6412 box. I can't believe I hadn't tried this simple experiment before. Here is how to get a double-picture with the 6412 box. The 6412 is Comcast's latest DVR (dual tuner, 120 gig hard drive, with a poor man's "tivo-like" interface).
1) Connect the 6412 to EITHER input 6 OR input 7 via HDMI
2) Change the channel on the 6412 to any channel that broadcasts in 720p such as ESPNHD, ABCHD, or FOXHD. I also have my 6412 set to output everything as 1080i. It doesn't have a native pass through mode.
3) Turn the 006 to any channel on any other input such as input 4
4) Now change the 006 back to the input you have the 6412 connected to - either input 6 or input 7
5) Voila - you will have a double picture. If you change the channel to any other non-720p broadcasting problem, the picture returns to normal.
How do I know it's the 6412 with the problem and not the 006?
Simple. I also have an HD-TIVO. If I hook it up to either input 6 or input 7 and do the same experiment I get NO DOUBLE PICTURE. By the way - the first HD-TIVO I had could not receive any picture over HDMI - a well known HD-TIVO problem, so I got D* to replace the box and everything is fine over HDMI (except for HD-light picture quality - as I've said many times Comcast's HD picture quality is MUCH better)
Now, the final confirmation would be for someone with a 6412 to repeat the 6412 part of this experiment and see if they get the double picture. I think Penton has the 6200 box, which is one generation behind the 6412.
OH No! We want them now in mass numbers to supply the starving elitists!
Hope Sony keeps up the quality/features. I believe they are known to make improvements in models that reduce production costs and features as time goes on. I have 2 SLV-R5 S-VHS machines that Sony built when getting out of the Beta Business. They were Killer machines but the next round was just OK.

Yup,
Just too much inbreeding in the family:) seems like we're always one generation behind.
Nice contribution. It's really like we both figured(not an 006 problem).....it's just that everybody but you were too lazy to pull the beast out again once it has been nesting for awhile.
Thank you. Looks good, especially the lip sync. Too bad no DVD-A. Anyway, when I was playing with the 975 to find the firmware I was surprised at all the config options...thought the 006 would do most of them and have the DVD "back off".

Gotcha!
And I believe that colortv has a Moto 6412 and a Qualia 006 that is NOT on a carpeted floor. Hint, hint.

thesirjay 03-28-05, 07:14 PM Nearing that big day - Anyone have some great advice on a receiver? I heard they are doing the "self adjusting" via microphone for only 6-700ish. I appreciate a receiver that will do the work to make the sound perfect in my seating position.
thesirjay 03-28-05, 07:15 PM Oh yes and the bias lighting how has that turned out for folks? I am probably going to go hunting down the instructions in the thread if no one has it handy - I intend to go for a totally black room so the bias lighting is probably necessary to keep the eyes from going bonkers.
thesirjay 03-28-05, 07:17 PM Anyone have advice for Time Warner Cable? Right now I am just sitting with standard cable but I am wondering what kinds of nice stuff they have in the digital cable world (e.g. cable card, DVR boxes).

Well I thinks that kinda depends upon what speakers that you choose...as you're going to need a receiver that puts out enough ooph to power them without a problem.

Is this a good thing or bad thing? Do the 006's enjoy the salt water ?

Enough to keep the Royal Gardeners busy mowin, 2.7 acres. And here is a picture of Mini Dive by his mini indoor pool. The outdoor pools haven't been opened yet.
Yikes,
I can just see his right hand pressing on the button of an invisible buoyancy compensator to descend.
:D
thesirjay 03-28-05, 07:36 PM I am using Klipsch RSX-5's. They managed to make it past the "wife approval" factor with good sound but they are hardly monsters in terms of power requirements. My sub is self powered SVS ultra with built in bash amplifier. So I think I can safely go quality over muscle power (at least until I can sell the wife on full size speakers the Klipsh are only about a foot tall).

Well if you’re trying to save some Penton Paper for serious bowel movements..may I suggest typing in Home Depot in the search mode.
This alternative was recommended to me by brt, our light guru who knows everything you ever wanted to know and didn’t want to know about the whole frigin light spectrum.
I got 3 of what he recommended at Home Depot –all for under $60. and got to flirt with the check out girl to boot!:D
If you desire to go the more conventional route as some have done here…try..
http://www.cinemaquestinc.com/ideal_lume.htm
which apparently works great. And you can even get a little remote thingie for it.
P.S.- Geez, it's been so long ago that I did that bias light set-up that I hope brt was the contributor and I gave credit where credit was due.

Ummmmm....I thought us elitists have Procs and amps!
