View Full Version : QUALIA 006 Owner's Thread
MotorMouth777 03-28-05, 08:29 PM Oooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I hope Josh can get the monster here before the masters.
If not maybe Penton will let me press my nose on the outside of his elitist window and watch it.

The latest agreed upon conventional wisdom is that the 006 will not accept 1080p 24 fps (or any 1080p). There is curiousity over whether it will be able to weave a 1080i 60ps into a nice 1080p 30ps or if it will bob it.
divedude, thanks for the pictures!
thesirjay 03-28-05, 09:18 PM Anyone know anything about the Sony dvd player firmware upgrade? I would love to know what build dates have it for instance. Much preferable to just taking my chances that the one on the shelf is "new enough". Or if its just a cdr away from installing thats great as well.

Like I said in a previous post…”All you need to do is ask.” You just proved my point.
Your query was answered in 9 min. and is absolutely correct info. How does that response compare to other threads that you frequent? ESPECIALLY other threads where there are only about 20 owners of the particular item?
I believe that the bulk of this thread does not detract from its quality and simply enhances it as previously noted.
You obviously have a knowledge base that far exceeds any of us in this realm (and I’m not being sarcastic) as we here are all hobbyists….but I can guarantee you one thing…just about every owner here that can afford to plunk down 13K for the TV and more for the stand is a leader in HIS chosen field.
Your posts are more than welcome as long as they are sincere and kind- hearted.

I just had an extensive discussion with mpscan (another up and coming 006 owner) on the Sony DVD thread today where I tried to summarize the whole situation and what to do if interested in purchasing this player, see...

Heh ok how many on this thread are trust fund kids just trying to find ways to spend too much money? :) I am a computer programmer here developing educational software that is sold around the world (I work for PLATO 2nd largest company in that market). I haven't heard much about what people do when they aren't watching their Qualias it sounds like an interesting topic.
thesirjay 03-28-05, 09:51 PM Thanks for the link PM - the new Sony players don't seem to mention a darn thing about 480i but are obviously very HDMI focused. Wish someone would get their hands on one and see how well it performs but I am guessing from their price point those new ones are not going to be very good, but in the world of electronics who the heck knows I will try my best to get a 1.9 version of the firmware and hope for the best.
Anyone else heard the Sony peace offerings with the other HD camp? I wish they would find a compromise its gonna suck being told you need 2 players to watch all the new content and that prices per disk are going to be ALOT higher since each camp will have less customers to sell to since they are splitting the market. So far its just Sony saying we are open to a solution people don't want rival formats so lets talk...

This alternative was recommended to me by brt, our light guru who knows everything you ever wanted to know and didn’t want to know about the whole frigin light spectrum.
I got 3 of what he recommended at Home Depot –all for under $60. and got to flirt with the check out girl to boot!:D
If you desire to go the more conventional route as some have done here…try..
http://www.cinemaquestinc.com/ideal_lume.htm
which apparently works great. And you can even get a little remote thingie for it.
P.S.- Geez, it's been so long ago that I did that bias light set-up that I hope brt was the contributor and I gave credit where credit was due.
Uh-oh, PentonMan, looks like that Old-Timers/Alzheimer's is kicking in. Wish I could take credit for the Home Depot bias lighting -- as well as that check-out girl -- but I'm too much of a friggin' elitist for that kinda thing... :D
I DO have a bias-lighting link on my amazing Qualia website HERE (http://homepage.mac.com/raythompson/SonyQualia006/Menu29.html). Yes, that was a shameless plug, but I'm over 2500 hits now on the home page (though the counter's off by 563 because I made a change and it reset)...
Mark Haflich, you are always welcome and -- perhaps -- might offer some insight about a processor to mate with my Qualia??? I think the set does a good job, but am pretty certain I can improve the picture (at least with SD sources) with a SOTA processor. I've preordered the Algolith; do you have any experience with this company or it's products? Thanks in advance for any advice you might offer...
Going OT here... Anyone take a look at this SONOS (http://www.sonos.com/)? This is a fantastic product for easily creating a wireless distribution system for home audio. I've got mine up and running, and am going to incorporate it with my Qualia setup (back on topic!). This company has it nailed, as their product addresses all the major problems associated with wireless distribution of computer audio files. I'm running two terabytes of Network Attached Storage -- one TB for audio files only, and one TB for backing up all the computers on our network. This means you can run the audio distribution off of the NAS box instead of having to use a computer as an active music server (back OT!)...

Your right, about O-T/Alzheimer's. Perhaps staying down too long too deep and saying "Screw the Dive Tables..It's beautiful down here" or perhaps landing on my head too much from those pig-wrastlin days (just kidding on the later for anybody joining this thread today).

I think I was the one talking about Home Depot lamps but I may have gotten
that from someone else.
Incidentally I think the stripe issue is with program material and not my Qualia.
I still love this TV. If only I could buy a Blue-Ray player and recorder. If I could review and build a library of good classical music performances I would be delighted.

You failed to mention more batteries, much more batteries, more stinkin batteries, why didn't somebody bring more batteries?, .......
How's mini divedud doing?
I'm beginning to think that we should adopt him as our official Qualia 006 mascot for brt's homepage.

The thread you mentioned shows how to check the F/W on the DVD player so people can check themselves.

Yup...I had to listen a bit to the B&W's I got. I did not like a whole lot of speakers everyone said were good...like DefTech, Paradigm, and Vienna and..
I even had a Proceed AVP and then got my Meridian 568. BIG difference. OH, back on topic, we finally spent some QualiaTime last Saturday. Saw the 004 as well as the 006. Dealer called today and said he would fax me a quote, but did not get it.

Nearing that big day - Anyone have some great advice on a receiver? I heard they are doing the "self adjusting" via microphone for only 6-700ish. I appreciate a receiver that will do the work to make the sound perfect in my seating position.
The Pioneer Elite VSX-54TX should do what you want and should be available in your price range if you look on the 'net. I've not heard that model but I have heard the 59TXi and was quite impressed with it.
Well... it's the eve of my delivery and the forecast is for 50% chance of rain tomorrow. The delivery service can either do it tomorrow at noon or on Friday, so instead of waiting until Friday I'm going to pray for a break in the showers and just do it. There are 50 steps and a very tricky walk through a garden to get it into the house, so it's gonna be "interesting".
Maybe I need to sacrifice one of the chickens for this one...
Oy.

Do you tend to focus more on performance or sonics? I'll avoid the analog/digital debate for now. :)
h2osports 03-29-05, 12:53 AM I know this is slightly OT, but I came across the following quote on the Warren Communications News website today:
"UNIFICATION TALKS ON BLU-RAY, HD DVD began within last 3 weeks, soon after Sony management shuffle, we have learned."
Maybe P-M can check with his Sony source?

thesirjay 03-29-05, 01:12 AM Hmm Unification... Why does that make me think of Firefly... for any of you who know the Firefly series there WILL be a movie out this year for it!! Woot it has some amazingly good graphics and a storyline that is not what you would expect out of a "space western".

Did you get your 006?
I'd like to hear what UMR says about it after he's had time to calibrate/evaluate it.

As a "TiVo Geek", I never watch anything on TV live. Heck, I don't even know when a lot of shows are actually on.
But I did watch Firefly live because I just couldn't wait.
When the DVD set came out, I bought two of them, just to run up the sales figures. BURN IN HELL, FOX!!!

marcsmul 03-29-05, 08:58 AM Hi:
A few days ago I recall a discussion regarding a universal remote controller Marantz and another one. I was speedreading at the time but with my 006 delivery a few weeks away (Josh promises me) am thinking more seriously about it.
Would appreciate any input.
OpisX and Cohiba when I can get them. Stocked up on a recent golf/fishing trip to Costa Rica. Vintage red corvette convert. and of course blonds or my wife would kill me.
ALSO: Have read many excellent comments on the Incredebles DVD, Matrix of course> ANY OTHER SACD or DVD-A's anyone can strongly reccomend.

Well some of us have got to sleep you know. From the people (non-sales) in Culver City, Calif. who have about 5 to play around with everyday….”The Blu-ray outputs 1080i.”
Mark,
I asked this same question to the folks from Qualia that were in Dallas at Star Power A/V. This is the same place that I think I saw DD. I would not lend much credence to what those folks say. The Qualia guy actually told one customer that the 006 DISPLAYS 1080i not 1080p. He had no clue about 1080p/24. He put me on the phone with another qualia person that was supposed to be more technical. This person was in las vegas at some demo. He thought that the 006 would accept 1080p/24 and said he would call back when he could speak with some else (more technical). I never heard back from him. I even went to Japan and spoke with the qualia folks there and could not get any confirmation about this issue. They felt that the Japanese version of the blu-ray player would not work with the US version of the 006 even though I've seen this work. The Japanese qualia person put me in contact with a US qualia person the he felt would be able to help me. That was an incorrect assumption. The US person knew even less and gave me lots of misinformation. I've given up on getting any useful info from anyone at sony or qualia. I'm pretty sure that I can't get the 006 to accept a 108p/24 signal at least into its hdmi input. Although the 004 can accept 1080p/24 and may even be able to accept 1080p/60 with some future upgrade. The only thing I haven't tried is to input 1080p/24 into the component connections. I need either a vga-component or dvi-component transcoder for my htpc to test this. But apparently Docdvd has better contacts that told him the 006 would not accept 1080p/24 at all. I haven't heard from anyone on this forum that has even tried to get 1080p/24 into the 006 other than myself. I don't know if there are other 006 owners with a htpc yet but I'm sure they will start to show up soon. I would feel better knowing that there are others trying to get this to work as the htpc world is very temperamental!(meaning that someone else may have better luck than me. ex. using an ATI graphics card instead of an NVIDIA.)

Zechman 03-29-05, 12:13 PM Reaching WAAAAY back . . .

kaduku got it started. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=5126157#post5126157)
brt3 responded with some information on APC. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=5126232#post5126232)
colortv suggested how to get a deal on a Belkin unit, (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=5128964#post5128964)
and later suggested getting the 1250VA model because his 1100VA unit didn't quite cut it. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=5141157#post5141157)
I just wanted to add that Belkin now has a 1500VA model available and that the "Friends of Belkin" code still works after all this time.
Although for some odd reason, I had to use Internet Explorer to place the order--I kept getting errors when using Netscape 7.2.

Not bloodly likely this week. Very likely sometime next week. Can't say for sure what day yet until my dealer gets tracking info from Sony on when it will arrive at the store in MD from the left coast. From there, a day or two.

thesirjay 03-29-05, 12:30 PM Heh Zech sounds like our timing will be about exactly the same now (thanks again) I am looking at Monday or Tuesday hopefully. Here is hoping for a photo finish (and don't forget those photos :) )
I've delayed answering the question, waiting for Josh (DOCDVD) to get back to me. He said that he would not charge my credit card until he shipped. I learned, today, that my credit card was charged for one-half the order on Friday ( the credit card company seems to be a little slow posting). I've both e-mailed and left telephone messages for Josh asking if this means my set has shipped, but as of Tuesday, 11:45 am CST, I've received no reply. I hope this means he is flying to a callibration, or otherwise engaged; and will reply soon. Ted

"It will arrive early this week so you should see it Monday or Tuesday."
I think that means that at least mine hasn't hit Utah yet - I heard from another Fab 5'er that they expect theirs to be delivered next Monday...
I am a bit surprised you got charged already he had told me as well that he would charge when it shipped - he had told me Sunday that he would be running my card on Monday (but that may have been due to expected arrival).
mauricef 03-29-05, 02:46 PM I will add some dribble to help meet the target.
brt3 I also have the Sonos system. I have 4 players and 3 remotes. I find I use this more than the whole house audio I have installed. It is easier (and much cooler) than having to touch the Crestron panels on the wall. I am enjoying the Sonos units almost as much as the Qualia.

That's great to hear, especially in comparison with a full-bore Crestron system. The Sonos is the greatest thing since sliced bread. The Qualia, on the other hand, is the single greatest thing since the invention of fire...

Hah....very good !
Did you buy your Sonos on-line or thru a local store (i.e. good deal?)
thesirjay 03-29-05, 05:46 PM Motor!! I got a tracking number too!! Let me know the info on where the heck to enter it! lol it tells me the number but neglects that all important fact of who is shipping it.
thesirjay 03-29-05, 05:57 PM Read your PM Motor :)
thesirjay 03-29-05, 06:56 PM Well crud lol it seems my TV may be here Friday but no stand yet... that leaves me wondering what on earth I should do with it. I suppose I could throw away money on some other stand until it comes but I doubt I could get the wife to go for that. Any good suggestions? ( I am guessing the wife wouldn't be keen on me using our dresser for a stand its about the only thing I can think of that could take the 250+ lbs of Qualia for awhile). I don't want to throw in the towel on the Sony stand (it is obviously the perfect match and keeps it quite secure) but I am a bit dumbfounded as to what to do.
ekovalsky 03-29-05, 06:58 PM My Qualia 006 is being delivered tomorrow morning. :)
I am most impressed with Showcase Home Entertainment (now Tweeter) here in Scottsdale -- when I placed the 25% deposit I was told April 1 and it is coming two days early! Plus they gave me 10% off without barely asking.
At the time I placed the order they said 15 units were expected and I was the first on the list. They had apparently sold six previously. Turns out only one showed up... guess supply is still short.
I could have saved a bit by going with DocDVD but figured it was worth something to have a local dealer for an item like this, should something not be right.
The set will be set into a wall of cabinets, which are not yet build. The cabinet makers won't start construction until they take final field measurements, including the TV itself. They would not build off the manufacturer specs. So I need to find a temporary stand.
Can someone with this set please measure the pedestal base for me? I have a heavy duty chest/cabinet that is about 43" wide and 23" deep. It may work, even if there is a big of overhang. But I don't want to lug it across the house if it way too small. TIA.

Looks like the cabinet will probably be okay, a little bit of overhang at the front won't be a big problem.

YES!
The chicken blood must've worked cause the sun came out at 10am and they truck showed up at noon, while I was drying the steps. It took 4 strong Guatemalens 90 minutes to negotate a very tricky delivery, but it all went beautifully (from my perspective, anyway). Not too much nail biting. (picture attached)
I cranked it up, plugged in your settings (THANKS) and set up the 975 to output 16:9 at 480i and... dropped in 5th Element sbit and...
I like this tv.
VERY NICE.
Almost had heart palpitations when the darn thing fired up, it was so good.
Comcast is coming in the morning to set up the 6412&cc (wish me luck) and then my dealer is sending his calibrator over to check out the system. Should be a fun day.
Thanks again for your and everyones help in teaching me so much about this (and so many other things... <g>).
Now, on to Lawrence of Arabia tonight.... I am a Quach Potato!
thesirjay 03-29-05, 09:08 PM Grats 3deye woah that move looked scary as heck.
I think I will put my Qualia on a dresser (an old real wood type) for the X days it takes my stand to appear. It will definitely be too high (29 inches) but the fact its big enough and sturdy enough makes up for it. Thanks dive for the cinder block idea but I think wife would have too much of a fit seeing me trying to bring those into the house. Luckily I remembered an old dresser that should fit the bill temporarily (she wasn't going for using our bedroom furniture bleh in fact she mentioned something about new bedroom furniture ack!).
Thanks for the advice all -
Qualia Checklist ---- Status
1. Get Stand ---- MIA
2. Get Sony 975 ---- Checking locally if version 1.9 firmware avail
3. New Receiver ---- Taking advice! so far will check out Pioneer Elite
4. HDMI - HDMI Cable ---- On the way from RAM (thanks PM)
5. Qualia Cover ---- Got Fabric in route (thanks a TON Kaduku)
6. Computer Hookup ---- Taking advice on best method think just need DVI to HDMI hookup ( don't think it has a standard monitor in on 006)
Those are the days of my life... hoping to get as much wiped out as possible before the Qualia lands :)
Thanks All Thanks All Thanks All.... The Qualia waiting is a little slice of hell but you guys have been a great support group keeping me from having any of those nasty sane thoughts like OMG I am about to spend how much?? The Qualia time is truly the time to suspend disbelief and believe in magic sony style.

sparkysj 03-29-05, 09:52 PM Congrats to all awaiting and new arrivals (3dye)!!!! Oh happy day! No buyers remorse on this thread!!! Motormouth, steady as she goes!! thesirjay, lists are useless once the 006 arrives, they just get saturated in body fluids! Eco, over hang can be a good thing! Penton Man -- I gotta tell you, this is one GREAT gadget. Beautifully designed, both the hardware and the interface, and it works superbly. Not what I would call true audiophile grade, but as soon as they release support for Apple Lossless I'll start re-ripping my music to get the best possible quality. This is also the best company for customer support I've ever dealt with, bar none. These guys are gonna succeed bigtime. The only thing I want to see them improve on is the above-mentioned support for a lossless codec, and a version with a digital output and no amplifier. That being said I'm a happy camper. Will try and get this in place in my Qualia cabinet this weekend. I bought mine through the company, though I now see they're showing up in retail stores...
3deye,
Very glad you are a happy camper! Spending time with this set on your old favorites is really great, as it's like viewing them in a completely new way. Way better than a 30-minute demo, no? BTW, do you have the Yamaha YSP-1 up and running?
Also -- for those of you who are unfamiliar with the SF Bay Area -- you really have to pity 3deye's movers. The area he lives in probably required the Guatemalan crew to be half-Sherpa to get the job done...
Sparky -- guess I'll have to add "the best invention since fire" to the website as a tagline. Better get that registered ASAP!
Dribble, dribble, pass!

As you know I have purchased the 006 sight unseen and am waiting delivery on April 9th.
So having not seen an actual set while I am vacationing in the Long Beach, Cal area I went to the Audio Video Center store in Torrance, Ca after checking they had a 006 on display.
What a disappointment and how not to sell high end displays.
First, The 006 is on display directly in line with the front door and sunlight is streaming in right on the screen.
Second, the channel being shown was a local HD channel that was not in HD but in terrible SD. Further the sales lady said they had locked the system on that channel and she was not able to change ( maybe did not know how or maybe she was unwilling ) to the HD source almost every other set was displaying.
The 006 was not only not impressive it was absolutely terrible.
If I was Sony I would not allow that dealer to sell anything except
WAl-Mart/Best Buy type units.

Yah, dat waz me. Now you know why. The shot I posted is nowhere near the most difficult part, but it was the most photogenic.
Just finished watching Crouching Tiger sbit... what a beautiful transfer. I'm sold.
One minor nit... I was sitting only 6 feet away and (in the dead silent parts of the film) I wished that the fan was a teeny bit quieter, but I'm a nut about that kind of stuff. My normal viewing distance is 11' and from that distance it's not an issue.
To brt... no, I won't be setting up the Yamaha or the dvhs deck until the stand and the rest of the furniture comes on April 19th/20th. I'm looking forward to that, but for what they are, the built-in speakers are pretty decent.
Can't wait to see some hd tomorrow. Onward!
Let's see if 3deye can go three weeks without succumbing to the temptation of D-VHS...

Sad story. This is the way countless people evaluate audio and video equipment. Poor display areas, improper setup, bad feeds, inept salespeople. But I'll tell you that even the Sony Qualia store in Las Vegas did not have the 006 setup correctly until some wise visitor moved the set off of the default vivid setting.
Those of us that have these sets in even marginally acceptable viewing rooms are thrilled with what we are seeing. Too bad that now that the 006's are trickling into non-Sony owned stores they are not properly setup. Sony reps should work with these stores to help them let this flagship HDTV show its stuff.

Nope, I'm around. Just watching a lot of TV, sneaking in some salaried work, and trying to get through early adopter woes of shooting Sony HDV video, editing it, and exporting it back to some format that can be viewed on the 006. No luck so far. Blu-Ray sure would be handy right now! The hardware/software tools aren't all in place yet, but there are some purported kludges out there that may come to the rescue. I have all this gorgeous HD Death Valley video that I edited to an ethereal soundtrack that I want to watch in Qualiavision!

Another of the FabFive reporting in. Mine was shipped yesterday by "Yellow " Trucking and automated telephone status says delivery of the set and stand by 5pm on Thursday, Mar 31. I don't believe that, so I'm really expecting Friday, as well. I have notified UMR by PM. He suggested that I get the Service Manual for the set from Sony Parts and Accessories at 1 800 488 7669. When I tried to order it last week, it was not in the system, yet. Today, it is and can be ordered for $16.22, tax and shipping included. Just use the KDS70Q006 model number. Here's hoping that it actually is the service manual, and not the "owner's manual". My center speaker is a Martin Logan "Theater", weighing 57lbs and is 43" wide. I have devised a "shelf" that will bridge over the set and sit on top of the Sony stand, just behind the "picture frame" front of the set. Final cutting and assembly are waiting until arrival of the set, so that I can get the precise dimentions. To my knowledge, this thread has never documented the dimentions of the set behind the picture frame--though I do recall a couple of requests for the info. The final instalation will have the Theater sitting just over the top of the set with the front of the speaker even with the front of the set, and the bias light mounted on the rear of the bridge. The Theater has a wall-mount bracket, which is it's current mounting method. But, I think the front "presence" suffers a little with the speaker some 18" behind the front of my current TV.
thesirjay 03-30-05, 11:50 AM Ted glad to hear yours is slated the same as mine. It is claiming 3/31 here as well which seems a tad optimistic (considering it left Utah today). Any luck ensuring that Yellow will use 4 people?
I am also anxious to hear if you get the actual service manual (a very nice thing to have handy just in case).
That bridge sounds nice - for now I am planning on sticking my center under the TV in the stand but I think over it would be a great option so let us all know how that goes....
Anyone connected a PC over HDMI? What are your experiences?
Thanks,

According to the "status" from Yellow, my set and stand left the Farmington, NM Depot last night. So, it might actually get to the Houston Depot late tonight or tomorrow. I am expecting the set to be transshipped from the road truck to a depot in Houston, before being loaded on a local delivery truck. I am hoping that Yellow-Roadway will call me for delivery instructions/availability when that happens. That is when I will take up the number of delivery people question. It's futile to deal with that until I'm speaking to the actual delivery dispatcher. I think "four" is a pretty hopeless number, and "three" is what I'll ask for. Actually, I think "two" will work as I have a relatively easy delivery. "One" will be a disaster, as I only have half a left knee and won't be much help. I recall one person reporting on a DOCDVD delivery said only one person showed up and would only take it as far as his dolly would roll. This could be the achilles heel of DODDVD purchases. Josh told me they would deliver "inside", but not unpack. However, life has taught me that what a shipper orders and what the receiver gets can be two different things. You don't really think I would refuse delivery if they didn't show up with enough people, did you? Besides, I think the 4-people to deliver is only a Sony recommendation, which is only being observed by Sony-ordered shipments, not independent dealers like DOCDVD.

Actually it's more than a recommendation, it is a REQUIREMENT -so people, if you ordered directly from Sony then DEMAND a 4-person delivery.
NVC is so perturbed about this that they have asked Sony to consider a 3-person requirement for drop shipment but, this has to go through safety design group --so even if a change in status occurs -it may take some time.
In relation to this, if you guys have an extremely difficult delivery (such as I did) and are not even sure that the angles in your home will make this feasible....and are worried about paying big bucks for a TV that you're afraid won't end up in the room that you had planned.....then if you buy from Sony directly have them put in writing (e-mail) that the sale is contingent upon placement in so-and-so room --which they WILL do if prompted.
MotorMouth777 03-30-05, 01:31 PM I called Yellow and when it gets to your city terminal they hand it off the the white glove people (Some local carrier they contract with). This is amazing ... and disgusting. Wouldn't you think one of Sony's nicest stores with all that foot traffic would put some killer video on that 006 in the window? Run a loop of American Idol. It's gorgeous in the 006. The highest rated show in the country, so many people know the show but only a very few of us have seen it in stunning Qualiavision. Talk about WOW factor - running Idol on that Q006 in the display window would help sell them. Playing an SD loop on that 006 in Vegas is a head scratcher!
SABAlove 03-30-05, 03:32 PM Penton-
The Sonos system is pretty impressive, IMHO. Especially if you have multiple zones in your house that you may want to play together or separately. Control 4 sounds like a promising application with similar audio abilities and also the ability to control lights, video, etc., but right now its vaporware and the Sonos delivers.

Hey, the Sony store is still a business. When supply catches up to demand, I'm sure they'll start "selling" the 006 instead of just "displaying" it. But with every set they make being sold before they make it, why bother? Showing off the 006 at it's best will just cut into sales of other items they have in stock now.
How's THAT for cynicism?

bobhoppel 03-30-05, 04:18 PM I got my 006 delivered yesterday from Abt yesterday. Really impressed!! Picture is as stunning as my Sony KD-34XBR960 but FOUR TIMES BIGGER (Area). Abt only used two guys to deliver the set. Everything went OK. So far the remote is the weakest part of the 006. My 960 remote works with the Qualia and is much friendlier. Only other wishes is that it had more control over the overscan like my Sharp LC-45GX6U. The menu features are almost identical to my 34XBR960 which helped the learning curve. Thanks to everybody on this forum.

I've had 300lbs of speakers delivered by Yellow and their trucks didn't even have a lift... they are used to backing up to the dock, and from there it's your problem... it is really cool that Josh has this white glove delivery helping... You all are going to love your sets...

I heartily agree... at LEAST give the set material that does it some justice. They can't come up with another Blu-Ray prototype or at worst another Direc(semi)HD receiver? I almost offered to send 'em a DVHS deck and X-Men 2 so they could display something decent but I didn't want to be that much of an ass. :D
@Zechman : $13k a set and people are lined up for them... think they're having a bit of a laugh? What're the odds that the first high-end Blu-Ray machine is under the Qualia flag? Why not give all those folks lined up for Qualia TVs a matching deck???

It is only a potentially valid issue if you use the upscaling features of the player.
Keep in mind that few (if any?) of the posters on the Sony NS975 thread are actually feeding their displays with 480i over HDMI.

Just had it happen to me today (take a look underneath you will see the scrapes that make it obvious they have been hacking around inside it). A tad annoying the salesperson was shocked when I told him about it ahead of time and lo and behold out of a new sealed box came a old used item (complete with a couple fingerprints on front panel).
It was the only one they had and it did have firmware 1.9 (you check this with the POWER OFF then push TOP MENU then CLEAR then POWER). I prefer to be the first owner on my NEW electronics so hopefully the replacement is minty. God it would suck to have a refurb 006 foisted off as new I sure hope that doesn't happen ( one good thing about being early purchaser is that is less likely).

Yikes,
Well I’m sure as hell glad you had an operation rather than having some moron just put it in a cast……because, my friend, breaking that bone (the scaphoid ) can lead to a serious complication known as avascular necrosis. I busted the same bone back during my competitive motor-sickle days and thank goodness all went well.

What I’m wondering is…..
Perhaps Ultimate Electronics sold the unit previously to somebody else who returned the unit because of some malfunction (tray-lock) within Ultimate Electronic’s return day policy.
Ultimate electronics then sends unit back to Sony (Laredo, Texas or wherever) to have the unit fixed…..at the same time Sony puts in the 1.9 firmware.
Sony returns the unit to Ultimate Electronics in a factory sealed box.
Ultimate Electronics sells the unit as new to another customer.

If not done right - serious arthritis. I used a guy named Doctor Melone - hand doctor to the Nets (and I think the Nicks)- the Qualia 006 of Hand Doctors - according to New York Magazine. In fact Richard Jefferson was being mended in the room right next to me.
Real problem is no heavy lifting or getting into tight places to unplug RCA jacks for 2 months.
As an aside and actually more on point for the forum, as a plasma owner, the only real issue I am having with the Qualia 006 is bulb replacement (plasmas in their latest incarnations have 60,000 hour half life) From your or other members past experience, will bulb prices go down over time because 60,000 hours of bulb use is about $6000.00 based on current bulb price. Yes I know I will probably never get close to that number of hours before spending another $10,000 on a new display technology (its a disease I think all AVS members have), and every bulb replacement is essentially a new Qualia, but it does concern me- help me allay this fear!

Yes, my digital cable box (SA 8300HD) has HDMI out; I picked up an HDMI->DVI adapter, plugged it into the back of the 8300 and connected it to the DVI cable I already had running to the Gefen (the 8300 took the place of my Samsung T165 OTA Tuner which had DVI out). This has been working just fine; no problems whatsoever and since at least some of the channels coming through are encrypted, the HDCP handshaking must be working just fine.

Well, I have heard from two stores that Sony had them send back all of their stock. In that case they never were sold. I suppose they could be considered as new. Funny that older s/n is showing 1.9. This was S/N 2006xxx.

It's interesting about this refurbishment thing. I wouldn't blame the store. If a manufacturer does it, it would be a violation of Federal law. It must be marked B stock etc. Of course things do get opened upon importation including by the importing manufacturer who might perform QA tests or software upgrades and the thing might not look like it was only touched by machines. So, it might not be refurbished. Then again who knows.
As a store owner, I can attest that boxes do get open without the main inside object getting ever used.
A customer buys something. Brand new but the manufacturer left out the manual or remote. So the store opens another one and gets the missing object for the purchaser. Then it orders in the missing item, puts it in the box, and reseals it. We tell the customer buying the next one why the box was opened. We show the main unit and everything inside was never used. Happy customer.

FYI... regarding the earlier thread about how the Sony 975 dvd player doesn't pass blacker-than-black via hdmi (and only does via component). My dealer's calibrator was out here this afternoon and we ran through the 480i dve together (via hdmi) and, apparently with the 1.9 firmware the 975 _does_ pass BtB via hdmi.
Got the dvhs unit and 1080i dve going today too and made my attempt at calibrating the 006. Fun!
I like this tv. I do miss that chicken, though.

Sean, here is my experience connecting the PC to the 006:
I connected my PC to the 006 with a DVI to HDMI cable. I couldn't get it to work for quite some time. Finally I downloaded the latest drivers for my video card ( Winfast A310 ) which I guess is running a GeForce FX 5600. Then I booted my PC connected to the set via the HDMI cable, rather than booting it connected to my monitor first. The PC correctly recognized the "monitor" as a "Sony HDTV" and allowed me to set a variety of resolutions. I chose 1920x1080 60Hz and the image on the 006 was every bit as good as my normal PC monitor, except much larger of course.
I also discovered an option buried under GeForce FX 5600 specific UI that shows up when you go to Display Properties/Advanced/GeForce FX 5600 that allows you to reduce the over scan so that you can see the entire desktop. Otherwise about an inch ( not very scientific ) is lost all the way around.
Basically it worked great in the end.
BenDover 03-31-05, 01:25 AM glad to hear connecting a pc works...i was starting to get nervous given some of the posts in this thread. i still don't know what people are referring to when the express concern for 1080/24 but maybe i'm just missing something.
thesirjay 03-31-05, 01:37 AM For all those who tried my instructions for the firmware menu sorry I had screwed up (trying to keep track of too many things on the eve of delivery). The directions are fixed now (and are same as mpsan's of course).
MotorMouth777 03-31-05, 03:11 AM Bendover.
I believe it will be about 63 1/2 inches. About 16.5 for the stand and another 47 for the telly itself. 23 Inched deep, 75ish inches wide with speakers and 66 inches wide with the speakers removed. 275 pounds.
If it was a woman I wouldn't mount her. You could get seriously hurt.
MotorMouth777 03-31-05, 03:19 AM Second wave update.
MotorMouths Qualia tracked to Sidney Nebraska. It's not the end of the world but I bet you can see it from there. Should be coming to its new home by Friday.
The Sony stand would not work because they did not leave enough room in the thing to put my B&W center. Whats up with the weenie 11 1/2 inches of space. Anyway I will post pictures of a stand I had built today that is same as Sony dimensions 75 x 26.5 x 16 but has enough room for a bigger center. Quite the project but sturdy as hell and should look pretty awesome.
If anyone is looking for a custom stand to Sony measurements but with enoiugh room for center or other devices.. I'm sure he would be happy to build another. Check out my pics here in a few days and see if ya like. We are gonna use the cool textured granite paint by rustoleum.

With the unit off, pick up the remote and press (in order) "top menu", "clear", then hit the power button to turn the unit on.
You will be in the menu. From there you can choose to read the firmware version.

Now as far as what I have read, there is no difference in perceived detail between 1080i and 1080 24pSf. What people see with film sourced material is much smoother pans, i.e. - a more perfect picture in the quest for perfection.

How about I send Ted99 $16.22 to cover his purchase of the service manual for you?
If you're not doing it because you enjoy it and want to contribute something, then you're just another calibrator. And I can hire one of those locally, thank you.

thesirjay 03-31-05, 11:35 AM Fab 5 people - VERIFY YOUR DELIVERY! I just called up and got told ONE PERSON! Thats despite having told Josh it was a difficult delivery and would need to be unboxed and tilted. Needless to say I shot off emails but it appears I may have 330 lbs sitting in my doorway today (They will NOT move it one inch inside past the doorway).
PLEA!! Can someone find those box dimensions? I am at work and don't have time for a thread crawl. I am hoping that it is 28.5 inches or less wide (yeah right) so I could wheel it into my entertainment room. Otherwise I have to take it out of the box and move it which scares the crap outa me.
thesirjay 03-31-05, 11:38 AM And of course the wife is ready to kill me since she made me verify like crazy that it would be white glove into the room we would be using it in.

Thanks, PM -- silly me thought I'd see the firmware displayed on the player's readout until your message. NOW I get it -- you have to turn the Qualia on and the key sequence gives you the player's diagnostics menu! Sorry, I guess my medication is slow to kick in these days. In my defense I was trying to do this as my wife slept last night, and did not want to turn on "The Torch" in a darkened room...
Thesirjay -- I don't have the box dimensions but they can't be the 28" you want. You might want to get the Yellow Pages and find someone good; I find piano movers are excellent because they use their heads (not literally, of course) since they're used to dealing with very heavy objects that cannot be scratched. I can't remember if you were a DocDVD buyer or not, but I'd give your dealer a serious call as well...
Good luck, and God speed!
thesirjay 03-31-05, 11:49 AM Yep DocDVD - anyone got a phone number for him?

I guess I should not have mentioned this. Here are my facts. I have about $4000 in test equipment and will spend about 8 hours of my time. I am perfectly willing to pickup the cost of the manual if that is an issue with Ted. I am also switching to doing this as a side business.
If that is a problem I am sorry.

A "Q-TIP", IF YOU WILL...
There is an episode of "Sunrise Earth" on DiscoveryHD that is simply unreal. It's called "Tropical Palms" and is stunning. Many of the shots are taken at fairly close with medium to wide-angle lenses and the detail is just unbelievable. This series doesn't work as well with long shots (see their "Yosemite" episode) -- they have a lens problem (or something; help me out here colortv) that smears extreme long shots. Or else the Qualia's so damned sharp that you can see every chromatic aberration in the lens. Mark this one down as true reference material, Q-heads...
thesirjay -- is this the guy? I know he's the calibrator there, but have never had the true identity of DocDVD revealed to me. Then again, I've never been invited to the Bat-Cave, either...

Who you gonna call???
BTW, I found the firmware for the 975, and it's 1.6 something. Is it practical to get this updated, or do I just sell this player on eBay and get another??? :(
UMR, I respect your investment and time. There is another calibrator -- who shall go nameless -- who charges $1K per Q006 calibration -- ouch!
On the other hand, if this set doesn't require a lot of changes to the settings during calibration, it's a lot more time and cost-effective for thread-members to find the settings that get them closest to a perfect calibration. I am borderline on getting calibrated, but if I can find someone local who really knows their way around a Qualia, I just might take the plunge...
ONE FINAL Q-TIP...
Watching "Step Into Liquid" on the Qualia. This is not the best source material, but WOW! Amazing film (can't wait to see "Riding Giants" in Q-Vision!)! I see one reason why the Qualia is so film-like in watching this. There are scenes where the film grain is evident, but the "dots" of the grain are quite small. The Qualia resolves such small details that even the grain is perfectly resolved, and it's fast enough that there is no smearing of such fine detail. Gotta run; I think Laird is about to catch the monster wave...
UMR--No Issue with me. I think the service manual is a smart thing to have. And, I'm happy to provide the Q006 for you to investigate and tweak. I'm the beneficiary, here. I would presume you will provide your evaluation of the set as an "open posting"; as there are many people that would value your opinion, who will not have an opportunity to see the set or have your experienced eyes. I remember that when you posted your look at the then-new JVC 720p DILA set, I went to the same place where you had seen it and saw the same shortcomings you pointed out. But for you, I might have purchased this set on a "Powerbuy" and missed out on the Q006. More credit to you if you see an opportunity to provide a service to Q006 owner's which is more than the "Settings" worked out by the first owners, and less than a full ISF callibration. The market will decide if your service is one that these owners will pay for. Disclaimer: I have an obvious self-interest, here.

Penton's mind works on a higher plane than us mere mortals. He converted them to metric just to show off that he was snuggling with his math teacher in college AND was paying attention in class. Since my teacher was a fat bald man and although as tempting as math teachers are I was able to resist.
Anyway the Penton numbers are:
WDTH: 180.3 CM
HGHT: 134.6 CM
DPTH: 72.4 CM
I am suprised he did not express the first two in meters. Perhaps Penton is needing a pretty math teacher recharge?
Anyhooooo these translate to the following for us whom visualizing metric units into real world distance causes brain pain:
WDTH: 71
HGHT: 53
DPTH: 28.5

MotorMouth777 03-31-05, 12:33 PM A normal door opening should be 32 inches me thinks. Could you take the door off the hinges as sometimes that gives you a tad more room. 2mm does not leave any room for margin. Thats like a knife blade width.

The good news is you can definitely do Audio in stages. I will post my pics prob this weekend on the stand we have constructed. It was actually very very simple but is turning out great. thesirjay 03-31-05, 02:58 PM Latest update.... Qualia is arriving today!! After alot of finagling Josh was able to get the shippers to deliver it into my front door and arranged for movers to come tomorrow to move it within the house! DocDVD was shocked at how disorganized Yellow was (they keep calling me up to schedule the same dang shipment!) But they were able to get me taken care of. Alas the 2 years of my life I lost when I heard "One Person" and "Won't be able to get past 2 outdoor steps" may never be recovered but at least I can use my remaining time happily in front of a Qualia. Scary stuff!
thesirjay 03-31-05, 03:21 PM Its an interior door so it has the fun molding pieces so I measured one molding to the other. Already removed the doors and I may be able to just wheel it in on a flatbed dolly I have. DocDVD did a TON of calling to get them straightened out so its a big relief. Just wish I had found out about this before this morning whew sweating bullets. Thanks all for the support hope all of the rest of you have less stressful Qualia delivery stories (I don't know if I could have survived watching them do that carry up stairs through foilage too dang scary).

mauricef 03-31-05, 03:24 PM I am curious if anyone here is using VOOM. I just took a look at it at a local rep and here are my observations. There is a lot of HD content. That is the good new. The bad news is I thought the picture was soft. We first compared it to DirecTV watching basketball on ESPN SD. I always thought basketball really showed how badly DirecTV compression had become. VOOM was worse. The picture was so soft I could not make out the pinstripes in on the announcer's suites. When watching HD I thought the picture was somewhat flat and less detailed than the Time Warner feed. On the plus side I did like the UI and again the amount of content. It was also much cheaper than what I am currently paying Time Warner. Any comments form owners?

Post some pics of your set up if you can...
I just got back from the NYC Qualia store and I have to tell you, I think the set grew :) It looked bigger than I remembered and for some reason divedude's pictures didn't do the set's (nor the stand's for that matter) size any justice.
They were wiring up their Qualia to receive digital inputs. Up until now they had been feeding it DirectTV and Blu-Ray via component. Now I'll have to make yet another trip to see the digital connection.

There are so many factors that can affect such a comparison; the only true way to determine for yourself is to have both, connected to the same TV, through the same input, under the same lighting conditions, viewing the same channel/programming, etc. (you get the point) and decide for yourself. Not certain how you did the comparison of the two but if you didn't minimize the variables any one of them could have skewed the results.
That being said, while I don't have DirectTV, I do have digital cable (Cablevision). I also have VOOM. I find the HD material on my digital cable to be inferior to VOOM, but only in certain instances; e.g., fast moving dark scenes.
I hope VOOM survives, but in the meantime I got the digital cable installed just in case.

BenDover 03-31-05, 03:48 PM I think I just found my next DVI switch:
http://www.digitalconnection.com/products/video/dvs51.asp
What I really find appealing is that it also switches digital audio (coax and/or audio); I won't have to purchase a separate audio switch.
Just received the Q006 Service Manual, by Priority Mail--two days from my order to here. It's the correct manual and it is for the US, and Canadian model "SP-1 Chassis". It is part number 987274302 at MSRP of $11.62, plus sales tax for your area and $3.50 shipping. It has complete schematics, shadow drawings of the PC boards, exploded drawings, part numbers, and service mode access. I have not seen any explanation of what the categories in service mode mean, or what they do. I'll stay a mile away from them in any event. It truly warms this engineer's heart to have this manual, though I'm not sure what I'll do with it, yet.
No word , yet on my delivery. The Yellow status still says enroute from Dallas to Houston.
BenDover 03-31-05, 04:08 PM mmmmm, service codes...yummy.
null and void warranty, not so yummy...don't go into those service screens, just entering them can void your warranty.
mauricef 03-31-05, 04:12 PM BenDover, there are many variables but the TV was not one of them. They were hooked up to identical Samsung HDTVs. I was able to play with them myself to see if the adjustments were way out of wack. Don't get me wrong, the picture was superior in some cases. I was just hoping it would blow me away in all cases. I want it all. I want an SD picture as good as my cable, HD as good as my cable, the greatest number of channels available, etc. It could very well be their setup. I may take them up on their introductory offer and evaluate with the displays in my home.

maurice were they both connected via the same input, e.g., both through DVI?
when you say identical samsungs, you don't mean the very same TV do you? i understand what you said to mean two separate TVs of the same model. that is a variable i would try to eliminate. also, you absolutely must be looking at the same programming; i.e., tune both to HBOHD for instance and watch the same show. ultimately, if the transfer and encoding are botched up, neither VOOM nor D* will be able to make them look great so you have to consider that for both.
I hear you on wanting it all, but we live in a real world and unfortunately, someone made the rule that you can't have it all :)
MotorMouth777 03-31-05, 05:00 PM It has FINALLY happened. MotorMouth has received his 006. They did find that boat because I was worried the Q006 was somewhere in Bratislava.
I did NOT get the white glove treatment (nor the white bra) I simply got the no-glove delivery. Yellow shows up with one redneck driver and one old guy who looked like he was on life support. Fortunately for me my delivery was a drop dead simple straight in, no turns, no steps kind of thing. Only had to carry it about 20 ft. I got one end and the truck driver got the other and I helped move it into my family room. The old guy just puffed on his Oxygen tank and wanted to know if he could come over this weekend and watch nascar. Yea sure. Hey I'm a big guy so no big deal but the big girl sure is heavy. IF there were any turns or steps that required more than two people then I would have been screwed.
For me it turned out OK but for someone else with "complications" you had better confirm things beforehand. Yellow will get it to your driveway but after that you are pretty much on your own.
Now I gotta finish staining the stand tonight so I can put my new sweetie up on her pedistal. Then Mr. Happy and I can have some Qualia time together .
BenDover 03-31-05, 05:03 PM congrats MM; sorry to hear about the delivery...starting to make me a bit nervous...i'll have to get on the horn with josh and clarify things a bit, otherwise i may have to bite the bullet and let sony steal my money.

FilmMixer 03-31-05, 05:31 PM Dont mean to beat a dead horse here.. but remember that the money you are saving with Josh at DocDVD is over 2.5k... Both BAX and Yellow are freight companies, and BAX offered extremely fast delivery to me (shipped on Monday and delviered to Southern Cal on Thursday..) Josh offers great service and speedy communication.. if he has told some of you that you would get this special delivery I am sorry that it didn't work out that way. He was very clear with me about delivery, and I also checked BAX's site and called them (as I have with Yellow) to see what their policy was before delivery... That is why I posted what I did a couple of days ago about needing help with his deliveries...
I am just posting this in defense of Josh and DocDVD so others on the fence, or Ben, don't get scared off from dealing with him. For the 2.5k savings, you could fly me, Penton, mini MandM Diver and MM over and we'll unload it for ya.... you would still have some beer money left over (for MM.... I don't drink.. :)

Hey, I like the way U2 chose to forego the Big Bucks and resisted playing in a big stadium (which they EASILY could have filled) and prefer to perform in more intimate venues.
Next up Arrowhead and Staples?
Probably all sold out.
So, the center you had built would not fit mine? Can they build one that will. I CAN put the center over the Q006, but I would be afraid it would fall.
P.S. I have B&W all around except for the sub.

Well then I would say that it is kind of a personal priority thing then.
A. If I had purchased one of the original players with the old firmware, then I would simply wait until it jammed up and wouldn’t eject a disc before I did anything about it. Who knows brt, you may have a video angel on your shoulder watching over you.
OR……
B. I would wait until you take your around the world cruise on the newest version of the Queen Elizabeth and send in your player at that time…while you’re on extended vacation and it doesn’t mean much waiting for it to come back.
If you choose the later, then all you have to do is call the Sony Consumer “Ah, the engineers messed up here” 800 number which you can probably find if you do a search under “Laredo” in the respective Sony DVD thread, (as that is where Sony is currently doing the overhauls) as well as the turnaround time, customer satisfaction, etc.
Caveat –
I would not recommend Choice A – if you make “Home Movies” with the wife and play said movies in the Sony DVD player.
FilmMixer 03-31-05, 08:21 PM PM... how big is his room/theate? If he has the space for floor standing speakers, ********** is having a sale right how on a great setup... have him PM me for any more info and comments... I do like their stuff, and feel that it gets me closer to hearing my work the way I am used to hearing it, than a lot of other speakers that are a lot more money.
The Emotiva proc/amp are great also....

thesirjay 03-31-05, 08:52 PM THE QUALIA HAS LANDED!!!
I survived a grueling move (the ONE LADY who helped me move it inside the house was great!!) A tad ironic after Motor's posting that sure enough a women is the one who was the mover. They had one other person help get it through the door then he was off.
God that thing is HEAVY!!
bobhoppel 03-31-05, 09:00 PM Look at the Abt website. @ **************.com. Then put KDS70Q006 in their search engine. They have had the Qualia Stand advertised for the last six weeks, but just today posted the Q006 TV. WOW!!!! You will see what I mean!!
If I had just one more post I could have listed the direct URL---Darn!!!

bobhoppel 03-31-05, 09:09 PM Anyway, Abt has raised the price and says the warranty is only for one year and then they offer a four year extended warranty. They do not call it a Qualia except when talking about the stand??? What is going on??? Almost sounds like the Canadian Unit.
Holy mackerel.
The Qualia 006 has to be the only TV that appreciates in value. To the tune of about 30%, no less.
Unbelievable.
And some people said it was overpriced at MSRP. Gotta love the free market economy.

Jb007-
Perhaps this is the re-badged Qualia 006 offered at a *discount price* that somebody on the “Sony Jumps” thread mentioned would be coming out in March/April ?:D
bobhoppel 03-31-05, 09:36 PM As you know(earlier post), I got my Q006 delivered from Abt this last Tuesday. Well, my wife just told me Abt contacted us today to take this four year extended warranty since our set only had one year parts and labor. She told them we already had three years with the set. She even went to the Qualia accessories box we got and sure enough, it(Sony) said our warranty was three years parts and labor. Sounds like the non-Qualia channels like Abt aren't too fond of Sony's big warranty since they make a lot of money on selling extended warranties. Anyway I have verified I have a three year Sony warranty!
Just doing my part to get to 200 pages.
Public Service Announcement...
Qualia 006 still not available at Wal-Mart.
OK, I NEED a stand! If yous :D gnu how close I am to a Qualia in my home, yous would understand how hard we are trying to get a Stand. I am now thinking of mounting the darn B&W Center on the wall above the big Q. I bet it would sound better too.
Lexus story to follow! :D
kanebear 04-01-05, 09:12 AM It's no replacement for a properly set up home theater but for those who don't have the room or have suboptimal speaker placement this thing WORKS WONDERS... and IMO would look great with the Qualia (although I'm using it in the bedroom with a plasma). Add a small sub and voila.

MotorMouth777 04-01-05, 09:27 AM Holy CRAP...................................... This thing is STUNNING. It is also perfectly HUGE. I was up till 6:00 AM cause I couldn't get Mr. Happy to go to sleep. I was watching and was selfish so I did not even leave the couch to post.
Will do the pic thing this weekend. Prob have to put up a web site as this forum thing keeps saying the images are too damn big......................just like the TV.
Doc did A-OK by me. He seemed flustered yesterday as it seemed Yellow doinked up several of his deliveries.
Did I say this thing was AWESOME. I mean WOW. I watched Bikini destinations and they seemed so real I thought I could fondle them. (Damn glass got in the way though). The plasma I had was good but damn, this is just so much better in every way. And it is not even set up to the suggested settings yet. This was straight out of the box.
It's worth every single elitist penny in my book.

That is just too damned funny. Glad to hear you're enjoying your first day with the new Q. I hope mine arrives on a Friday because I'm sure I won't want to go to sleep either which would make trekking into the office the next morning miserable
Everyone
The Universe is in balance. Motor got his 006. .... and its just in time to watch the season cliffhanger of Battlestar Galactica. woo hoo
By the way, has anyone noticed on Battlestar Galactica that the really hot blond Cilon is "Cilon Number 6". Not just a coincidence.

Just remember that you want to keep the acoustical centers of he fronts of the three speakers no more than two feet apart vertically to keep vertical continuity of the sound field. ...
This is why I am not so enamored with placing the center underneath the TV, particularly when the center of such a huge screen is way up there. Even though the center I'm looking at would fit (and quite frankly, after having seen the Qualia and stand again yesterday and paying closer attention this time to the stand, I can't imagine a center that is larger than that damned opening under the stand!!!), I will likely mount the center on the ceiling over the Qualia (I'm in a basement with 7ft ceilings so it won't be too high; it will likely hover over the Qualia just perfectly) and angle it down towards the main seating area.
