View Full Version : QUALIA 006 Owner's Thread
Rob Tomlin 07-09-05, 10:52 PM I agree and hope it stays a rumor. I think we are only seeing the beginning stages of this technology. :)
I agree.
I think it would not be like Sony at all to abandon this technology. Heck, they held on to Beta until just recently!
They have put too much into SXRD to just abandon it. And yes, I realize that there is a difference between "abandoning" a technology and stopping "R&D" re the technology.
Perhaps, as someone else stated above, they will just pull back on the "R", but keep on with the "D"!
btscott 07-10-05, 03:05 PM Thanks for the advice on a new DVD player. After having a look at the 59AVI and the 3910, I chose the 3910.
Thanks for the advice on a new DVD player. After having a look at the 59AVI and the 3910, I chose the 3910.
Good choice. You will not regret it! Make sure you get one that passes BTB. Check out the Denon 3910 Owner's Thread for advice and questions. :)
Does anyone know if there are any Qualia's in the Boston area on display? I know I can pick up the phone and start dialing but well, you can imagin how appealing that is. I'd love it if there was someone in the Suburbs showing one. I just recently (5 mintues ago) notice that they were in Tweeters which are all over the place here and though someone who has one or is thinking about one and monitoring this thread my know where one is. Thanks.
Artwood 07-12-05, 10:27 AM Well it looks like Sony is getting out of CRT and don't make any DLPs and probably won't be making Plasmas pretty soon. Why not get out of SXRD? These things happen when you move from being a great display maker to an entertainment company huckster. The key decision to focus more on entertainment and push piece of junk Rear Projection LCD and not produce DLP, combined with the Chinese onslaught means Sony as a technological Video Display manufacturer is over. Playstation--yes! Computers--yes! Movies and music--yes! SXRD--can you say in the same leagues as discontinued Pioneer Elite Rear Projection CRTs--maybe the SXRD can be in the same museum as the Sony 40XBR800.
Neo2005 07-12-05, 06:41 PM Well at long last my day to receive my Q006 was tomorrow ..... however my dealer called and the box had damage and he could hear loose parts inside soooooooo the next unit is next week ...... ugh!!!!!

Ouch!
Give your dealer some credit though since he didn't even take a chance. Some dealers would have opened the box and tried to give you the TV and hope for the best.
Not that I would necessarily expect that from a dealer of the Qualia.

my condolences neo...the light at the end of the tunnel is drawing ever near!
btw all fellow qualians, i just placed an order for a replacement bulb yesterday figuring i couldn't imagine being without my set for the time it would take to get my one warranty replacement from SONY.
i recall that diverdude had one in reserve, did anyone else get a replacment ahead of time?

BenDover,
I still have my spare, but no indication of needing to use it yet. The picture still looks as good as ever. For the last 3 1/2 weeks I have been spending a lot of time watching the 006 and I am really glad to have such a great picture to watch. I have been undergoing radiation and chemo, so the 006 has been a great comfort.

Neo2005,
Sorry to hear about the damage, you have been waiting for what seems like forever. I will be looking forward to seeing pictures when it arrives. :D

In all seriousness, my prayers and thoughts are with you...
Now, on the lighter side, did you really have to undergo that treatment just to get some one-on-one time with your Q? Bit extreme...I myself just feign a number of physical ailments on the weekends when I should be doing other things around the house :)
BenDover 07-12-05, 07:38 PM  Artwood when you gonna dump that anicent artifact Mits 73 and get a real HDTV...
Oh boy...maybe you should start another thread for that *discussion*

BenDover,
Thank you so much. It is a bit extreme, but anything for great TV
Wow, DD, I had no idea -- hang in there, you've got all of us sending all the good vibes we can. Get better and take care of yourself!!
Cheers
Yes DD...you need to get Better! I am only going to give you 'til PM gets back!
Artwood 07-12-05, 11:25 PM BenDover: how do you know it's not a Sony?
DD, if I were there with you I'd peform my best Ernest Angely imitation -- "foul cancerous demons... come OWWW-UHT!!!"
This may also work if you lay your hands upon my words on the screen; if not you may have to send me a small check to speed the healing powers...
Seriously -- enjoy that Q006 and watch lots of comedies, as laughter can be pretty powerful medicine...
Ray
BTW; I was going through our many piles of boxes and what did I stumble upon? Mini-Dive's Evil Twin!!!
BenDover 07-12-05, 11:34 PM BenDover: how do you know it's not a Sony?
I don't know what it is (although the poster said it was a Mits), but someone calling you to the matt like that can only mean trouble...after all, you are a menace without being provoked :)
Neo2005 07-13-05, 09:52 AM DD ..... what the hell? I thought you were off chasing sharks in some remote Asian waters!!! My prayers are with you and Mini-Dude. Can you share any pictures of Mini we all miss seeing him. PM me at any time and I will respond in kind. You sound like a tough, in-shape person, may your treatments go well and you quickly recover. Any reruns of "Sea Hunt" are highly recommended during this time.
FLASH!!! new review of the Q006.go to ultimateavmag.com. they like it ,but at the same time have issues with it!

Interesting while he generally liked it this article had the most negative comments I have heard about this set.
BenDover 07-13-05, 04:19 PM OK, I immediately have to question this review given this statement:
"In the center of the black frame, just under the screen, is a large Sony logo that lights up when the TV comes and stays lit, bright white. Unfortunately, there is no control to dim or disable this. I found that distracting and would consider covering the light with black tape if I owned the set."
:D
[EDIT: Wait, I got ripped off, mine only has two!!
"Using one of the three HDMI connections, I hooked up a Humax HTA 100 digital tuner, and it was able to receive every station, including WETA."
My memory may be failing me, but my set arrived in "Standard" mode; maybe the set he reviewed had "made its rounds on the review circuit" ??
"As a result, when I switched to a different input for the Humax receiver, the TV reverted to factory settings—including the Vivid picture mode that cranks contrast all the way up and adjusts brightness to flame-thrower levels. "
Why didn't he hook up the Q to his high-end scaler, is it not possible?
"Of course, when comparing this TV to my projector, I am to some degree really comparing Sony's scaler to my superb, outboard Faroudja VPH-5000 scaler, which cost considerably more than $13,000 when it came out in 2000. So the comparison is not fair."]

Neo2005,
I did go to Palau the first two weeks of June. The Docs said I may not be able to dive after this is finished, so they said it would be OK to go on one more trip prior to starting. I really had a great time and saw lots of sharks and turtles.
Thanks to everyone for all your kind wishes. You guys are great friends and we are all part of the Qualia family. :)
Mini Dive gave me a bottle of "Mini Miracle Cure All". He claims he made it and it will fix anything. I peeked under the label and saw that it is BBQ sauce, so he may be right. ;)
DBordello 07-13-05, 10:29 PM I recently bought a harmony 880 to help manage my Q006 and system. The problem I am having is that the Qs IR reciever is slightly too far from the rest of my equipment rack. The equipment rack is about a foot left of the Q006. Sometimes the Q catches the signal, some times it doesn't.
I noticed the control S jacks on the back of the Q. I also have a Sony NS975 dvd player. The problem is that it only has a control S in jack. Has anybody ever used the control S port? What kind of cable does it need?
Does anybody have any other ideas to help out the Qs not so sensitve IR sensor?
thanks,
dan

In my setup, my equipment rack is a good 5-6 ft left of my Q; I have no problem controlling both the Q and the equipment rack simultaneously. Essentially, I aim the remote about a foot left of the Q when I need to control both the set and the equipment in the rack simultaneously and that works just fine. I am not sure where the Q's IR sensor is; I'll have to consult the manual.
Maybe there is something wrong with the 880?
Sorry I didn't offer any help with your situation but I thought it might be valuable to get an idea of a setup that doesn't have the problems you are experiencing.
DBordello 07-13-05, 11:05 PM Well, perhaps I need to train the rest of the family to point it closer to the Q. They seem to have the largest problem with it. It isn't the 880, my tivo remote could power off the Q and my reciever and we had the same issue with that. I was really thinking that the Control S would be a simple fix. I am sort of surprised there is no Control S out for the dvd player.
I think I'll try to make more of an effort in pointing the harmony and see how that goes.
dan
bobhoppel 07-14-05, 01:27 AM DBordello,
Pls check your Private Messages(PM)
You could also try an IR repeater/extender like the Hot Link Pro. Just Google it.

Try fresh batteries.
That would have been my first reaction too but since I am an owner of the 880 I know that it has rechargeable batteries and I have no doubt he has charged the unit :)
BTW, I have recently had trouble charging my 880; when I place it in the cradle it doesn't always make proper contact and therefore doesn't charge!

If the rechargable batteries are like other rechargables, there may be a problem with either the batteries or the charger.

I’m posting this via the Royal Dog Sitter, as I still can’t remember my password so I hope this gets on the thread before I return.
Geez, divedude, screw the docs – even if you’re going to some place like M.D. Anderson.
Sh*t, and in French, Merde!, they said Lance would NEVER compete on an elite level again…and he’s the greatest Tour De France winner in history!
What the hell, it’s not like you have a malignant tumor of your middle ear, and you can’t equalize while descending !
Pick up his first book and read it for inspiration. Even if you don’t know anything about bicycle racing, it’s an easy read.
I expect after your therapy for you to be a lean, mean, fighting machine ready for diving in the worst currents imaginable….!
Anyway folks, we’re blasting across country in our rental car (brt, I’ve already dented in two side panels because zee Royal Queen said I drifted a tad too much on the switchbacks comin down the mountain – but I think the car’s setup way too loose!) to get ahead of the peloton before they start the mountain stages in the Pyrenees.
So guys, the tour winner should be decided by Sunday…if you’re interested watch the stage on OLN on Saturday because that should be defining !
P.S.
Discovery Team lost one member today whom was key to helping Lance in the Pyrenees, so his rivals will attack and attack and attack on Saturday.
P.S.#2 – Artwood, Sony gave up on plasma awhile ago, in fact, way ahead of the current change in management. If and I say IF…they plan to stop R&D on SXRD technology, we can all probably pick up another 006 on fire sale for another room in our house….works for me !
P.S.#3 – minidive, take care of divedude during the current treatments….and don’t let him run out the backyard in his underwear anymore…he’s scaring the hell outa the neighbors, like Cousteau used to !
Penton-Man 07-14-05, 05:17 PM Just to prove this thread is all encompassing…..
Blu-ray going to be released March 06 along with the PS3. It's going to be backwards compatible (plays dvd, cds and blu ray).
Now, just waiting for Lawrence of Arabia !

Unbelievable images pop into my head; PM dressed in proper French driving attire (scarf billowing in the breeze, stringback driving gloves, and, uh, let's see... elegant red beret?) flying down the mountain roads in his Deux Cheveaux with the canvas roof pulled ALL the way back, tires squealing in protest as he brutally whips the little car into corner after corner...
Regarding the final sentence: them's two words I NEVER expected to hear in the same sentence -- QUALIA and FIRE SALE...
Rob Tomlin 07-14-05, 07:02 PM Now, just waiting for Lawrence of Arabia !
Again you tease me with that statement!?
;)
That will be a great day (though it will never beat seeing it in 70mm on a huge screen)!
Penton,
I hope you are going to give the Royal Dog Sitter some extra Penton paper for showcasing his/her typing prowess!
I assume you're having a grand 'ol time over there. Lance has got an uphill battle in front of him - literally.
Blu-ray on the 006 - is it a done deal that it will play all the formats as you have mentioned? Also, have you heard anything special about a compromise with HD DVD or has that ship sailed for good? I realize that nothing can be certain at this point but I have not been paying too much attention to this lately and am wondering if I missed anything.

Rob,
Will never forget seeing the last 70mm "Restored Director's Cut" (or whatever they called it) of "Lawrence Of Arabia" in San Francisco about ten or twelve years back. Wow! That was a true QRF (Qualia Reference Film) that should look spectacular on Blu-Ray...

I have seen LoA in 70mm twice: once at the Cinerama Dome and once at The Academy Theater in Beverly Hills. The Academy Theater version was about 2 years ago and the quality was jaw dropping.
The pq was also great at the Cinerama Dome, but there were audio dropouts. Robert Harris had performed some additional color correction work on these prints before their release.
Best cinematic experiences of my life by far!

It really was something all right. Especially The Academy Theater version. They do NOT sell any snacks or beverages (at the Cinerama Dome a guy behind me kept chugging his cup full of ice...) and ABSOLUTELY NO TALKING or whispering! It was great! :)
BenDover 07-14-05, 11:54 PM Well, my new Oppo DVD player arrived today. My Zektor DVI Switch arrived a couple of days ago. I finally connected my HTPC and now the new DVD player. Haven't got the HTPC fully up and running though; I have to upgrade my video card and pop in my new myHD -130, but my initial dry run with the existing equipment in the HTPC got me excited for what the future holds...won't have to keep my laptop nearby anymore :)
Although I only popped one DVD in for a short while and I would want to run through more material, I think we can add another DVD player to the list of players that plays very nicely with the Q...this damned $200 player looked as good as my Denon 3910!

HardDriver 07-15-05, 09:23 AM Hello fellow Qualians!
I'm still enjoying my set just as much as the day we got it out of the box. It's like a gift that just keeps on giving!!! :D Anyway, I want to use my Q to show off the digital pictures that I just took on a 3 week tour of Europe. Before I go out and buy a Memory Stick w/card reader, I'd love to hear what the image quality looks like from this source. Does the image display on the Q in its full resolution? How does it look? With all the ink spilled on the 006, I can't believe the functionality of this little feature is hardly ever mentioned!
Thanks!

I think it is great. Pic quality is superb, larger than life :)
I also record many more little MPEG clips on both my digital still and my digicam since it is so easy to pop the memory stick out of either camera, pop it into the Q and ... you can guess the rest.
I was hoping that maybe there would be a way to play a 1080p clip but alas it only supports MPEG-1.
I personally didn't need to run out and buy anything since my digital still and my digicam both use memory stick.

Penton-Man 07-15-05, 05:09 PM Just checking in as we’ve finally arrived at the next stop on this rolling circus.
It has been reported that I was recently involved in a somewhat indelicate situation last night with a woman of ill-repute. Well allow me to set the record straight ….at least for the possibility that the guy that holds the key to the Pearly Gates reads this thread.
You see I was not “flirting”. I was simply practicing my French with a congenial woman while pumping her for information as to the fastest way to get out of town because I didn’t want to get behind the caravan of 18-wheelers of the Tour de France support circus.
Geez, once you get stuck behind them, you might as well have rented a rider lawn mower to get around France.
So that’s my story and I’m sticking with it.
I tried to explain this to the Royal Queen and she responded that I was smiling and enjoying the conversation too much for just asking directions (plus, I apparently wasn't looking at her face during the conversation) which led to my secondary sleeping arrangements. I rack it all up to that time of the month, if you guys know what I mean.
Anyway, I e-mailed the rumor of the curtailing or stoppage of SXRD R&D to my Sony contact back in the U.S.A. and this is the reply.....”We have several new SXRD tech models coming out in the next 6-8 months. I’ve heard nothing to confirm that rumor on my end.”
Au revoir,
Penton

Ask, and you shall receive . . . .
(Especially after buttering me up with all that "great" talk. :D)
It basically works like this: the photo will get displayed at as high a resolution as possible, after being pillarboxed (or possibly letterboxed if it's really wide). If the picture is exactly 1920 x 1080, it will fill the screen, but keep in mind that there is overscan so the edges won't really be visible. If your camera is a 2 megapixel or more, the image the image will be scaled down to N x 1080, depending on original aspect ratio. If your camera is less than that, the pictures will be scaled up to N x 1080. The Qualia always uses as much screen real estate as possible, and only has one resolution to scale up/down to.
I did some experiments with contructing test pattern JPG's and found that (A) you do get the full 1080 lines of resolvable detail, and (B) you don't get the full 1920 pixels of horizontal resolution. That is, black and white horizontal stripes will show up as stripes and black and white vertical stripes will show up as a medium gray. Same goes for a 1-pixel checkerboard pattern. (You also can REALLY see how good your convergence is, and mine, thankfully, is right on the mark.)
This feature has very high Wife Acceptance Factor (WAF). The built-in piano music is a nice touch, or you can play your own MP3's as the background track. As BenDover posted, you can play MPEG videos too, but I haven't tried that myself yet.
Feel free to ask any other questions you have. I guess I'm the resident expert.

Well you see, Mr. Royal Dog Sitter, despite the fact that you have asked RonB63 and not the Royal Historian of the Qualia 006 Owner's Thread (me), I will tell you story so that one and all can enjoy . . . .
Once upon a time on a page far, far away, there were peasants entering the Royal Qualia 006 Owner's Thread making jealous comments about Qualia 006 owners being elitists, as a way of soothing their bruised egos and disbelief that a TV could cost $13,000 and yet be worth every penny.
Penton-Man, never missing a chance to lampoon such small-mindedness, made a number of posts in which he played up the whole "elite" angle, even unto remarking that he uses $10 bills as toilet paper (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5255687&&#post5255687). Shortly afterward, MotorMouth777 proclaimed that $ 10 Bills are now officially called Penton-Paper (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5256064&highlight=pentonpaper#post5256064), and one of the first "legends" of the Qualia 006 Owner's Thread was born.
So Royal Dog Sitter, when the Royal "Pouch" no longer requires your services, his Majesty will in fact be paying you with Penton Paper, which is a decidedly good thing.
...unless, of course, he spent it all on French . . . um . . . "directions".

Zechman 07-15-05, 06:49 PM I recently bought a harmony 880 to help manage my Q006 and system.
Does anybody have any other ideas to help out the Qs not so sensitve IR sensor?
thanks,
dan
The Control-S is simplicity itself. Any mono, two-conductor cable with 1/8" jacks will do. I use it to solve the opposite problem: my Sony STR-5000ES recevier, being down on the floor in the Qualia's stand, requires a lot more aiming than the big 006 itself does. (Usually it is Mrs. Zechman who has this trouble.) The Control-S out from the 006 to the 5000 eliminates that problem.
Why is it that women don't "aim" instinctually, the way men do?
Oh, nevermind. :D

Zechman 07-15-05, 06:56 PM BenDover,
I still have my spare, but no indication of needing to use it yet. The picture still looks as good as ever. For the last 3 1/2 weeks I have been spending a lot of time watching the 006 and I am really glad to have such a great picture to watch. I have been undergoing radiation and chemo, so the 006 has been a great comfort.
DD, you waited until I was close to 200 posts to tell us this on purpose, didn't you???
I know this goes way beyond "get well soon", so instead I'll just say hang in there and keep hanging in there, DD.
No matter how crappy the treatments makes you feel, remember that here, you're family. We're all pulling for you, and we all want to keep hearing from you!

...................Anyway, I want to use my Q to show off the digital pictures that I just took on a 3 week tour of Europe. Before I go out and buy a Memory Stick w/card reader, I'd love to hear what the image quality looks like from this source. Does the image display on the Q in its full resolution? How does it look? With all the ink spilled on the 006, I can't believe the functionality of this little feature is hardly ever mentioned!
[/I]
Alternative solution.
If your DVD player will play jpegs off of a CD(Denon 2900 and 5900 will), then burn the images off of the memory stick onto a CD. Besides, sooner or later you are going to want to reuse the memory stick.

Zechman,
That's the second century post you used to wish me well. It is friends like you and everyone in our Qualia family that will help me get past this. You can use your 300th post to congratulate me on beating this thing :)
schaffer970 07-15-05, 08:11 PM \Thanks to everyone for all your kind wishes. You guys are great friends and we are all part of the Qualia family. :)
Mini Dive gave me a bottle of "Mini Miracle Cure All". He claims he made it and it will fix anything. I peeked under the label and saw that it is BBQ sauce, so he may be right. ;)
First thought I had was, sure hope Mini Dive is looking after divedude. I see I needn't have worried.
Hang in their and keep up the good thoughts. Anyone who can think about entertaining others while getting through treatment is already more than half way there!

[/QUOTE]
PM,
Both Mini Dive and myself like . . . uh believe your "asking for directions" story. ;)
When you get back, I will send you a pm with details of the possible diving problems. I know you are enjoying your trip. Keep cheering Lance on :D
HardDriver 07-15-05, 10:16 PM Ask, and you shall receive . . . .
(Especially after buttering me up with all that "great" talk. )
--Dwayne
Thanks again, Dwayne! The images from my best camera are 2048x1536 and black bars are a pet peeve of mine, so I'll probably crop them to 1920x1080 for the full effect. I took a second look at the manual and must have overlooked the MP3 option. What a pleasant suprise!!! I'm so glad you mentioned it. :D

On a side note, has anyone registered their 006 with Sony?
hey ronB are you there? what is penton paper? is it good or bad?
the dog sitter
Dwayne,
Thanks for covering! I guess I let my golf game (and kids) take over my day/night. Then again, it was Friday so I needed a little R & R. :p
Quick (stupid?) question - I have never witnessed an ISF calibration. Will having my 006 in a wall unit cause issues with getting proper access? I am having a modest hole (around 20"x20") put in the wall behind the unit so I can get at it from the next room but this will not make access too easy.
Penton - how much did the new jewelry for the Royal Queen set you back?

Geez, once you get stuck behind, you might have France.
Anyone using a Bello AVSC-2050 stand with this TV? I'm using this for my current TV and would like to keep it if I upgrade to the 006, haven't been able to find out how much weight the top shelf will support.
I didn't seen this particular stand mentioned when I searched thread.
ericlhyman 07-16-05, 01:54 PM Check the Bello AVSC-2572, which accommodates 70" tvs. A video store in my area is matching this with the Qualia.
HardDriver 07-17-05, 04:16 PM Well, I just got my Memory Stick and card reader and put a few images on there which I batch resized to 1920x1080 pixels...
FREAKING CRAP!
WOW. I have NEVER seen digital images look so perfect before in all my life!!!! The color reproduction from real life was spot-on, the brightness of the images was astounding, and the level of detail was just beyond words. Anyone who has not tried the Memory Stick slot on your Qualia - you are only getting about $8,000 worth of your investment! The slide show is also brilliant, and the ability to include your MP3 tracks is icing on the cake. This is hands-down the very best way to show off your digital photos!!!
WOW! I just ordered one of those "6000 in 1" Memory card readers :D so we can take pics off my wifes new Cell Phone. It uses Transflash. Our real camera uses CF. So, now that I will have everything but Sony Memory, I guess I can get a stick for the Q. Is there an inexpensive one out there...I assume 256MB should be enough.
TIA,
Dave

Sooooooo how do I get from a Canon flash card to a Sony memory stick?
I have one of those multi-format card readers, plug in my CF card with pics taken from my Nikon D70, transferred the photos to my laptop, resized them with Photoshop to 1920x1080, then transferred back them into my memory stick. First time I ever tried re-sizing the pics today, and HardDriver was right, the photos looked awesome. No need for those Roku HD photo players!!!!!! I am now collecting photos to show off the Q in another way. :)
Penton-Man 07-17-05, 08:50 PM Well folks,
What a day ! George Hincapie who is a genuine nice guy and great friend of Lance A. takes the stage win and Lance solidifies his hold on the yellow jersey.
Baring sickness or injury, this puppy is about wrapped up. Of course the Discovery Team must stay super alert and Lance has to ride a decent time trial at the end but #7 should be in the bag.
Zee Royal Queen and I are skipping the rest of the intermediate stages and heading straight up to Gay (in the old-fashioned sense of the word) Paris to watch the final stage there.
To RonB63 – Yes, it’s a done deal that Blu-ray will play all the formats I mentioned on a previous post. I am not privy to the compromise talks with HD DVD for a unified solitary hi-def format and I assume that unless these purported talks have reached a final stage….that Sony will push ahead and debut the Blu-ray since the best defense is a good offense.
To Rob Tomlin – Sony already has a short 1080i loop of a segment of Lawrence of Arabia on disc that they were popping into their prototype Blu-ray machines and displaying via the Qualia 006 to show off its superb picture (at some SonyStyle stores or past shows?). So I would expect LoA to be one of the first releases in the Blu-ray format.
To Zechman – Thanks for giving the Royal Dog Sitter the history lesson regarding the Qualia 006 thread nomenclature but, you see, he shall get no Penton Paper for the dog sitting because he is my nephew (actually from just down the road from you in Mount Vernon) and he is staying with us in the castle for most of the summer with the primary goal of checking out the area and U.C.L.A. as a possible place for undergraduate study.
To the Royal Dog Sitter – Consider all the food and gas that you’ve consumed so far this summer BEFORE you ask for Penton Paper. Also consider the over $200 speeding ticket that I paid for you back in June. Also, most importantly, don’t you dare take that grey cover off my Qualia 006 to watch it (because you are not videophilically inclined and could damage my baby) as I will be aware of such transgression when I return because I have dog hairs strategically located around the cover to detect any removal. You may watch the old TV in the family room as we discussed previously.
To divedude – Hang in there buddy. Remember this is but a bump in the road of life.
To Neo – You know after I e-mailed that post to the Royal Dog Sitter I read it again and thought to myself…if a psychiatrist were to pick out a few select words from this spiel …he would probably think that I have “issues”. But it was too late to do anything and I couldn’t edit it from my end.
To BenDover – Thank you for not making any comment about me bending her over behind the bar.
To all you doubting Thomases – I’m hiring Joel or jb007 (where are you?) next time to plead my case….you guys are as cynical as zee Royal Queen. Good thing is that the secondary sleeping arrangements only lasted one night !
Au revoir,
Penton
The first set of pics that I have transferred to my memory stick had no problems. Total of only 6. I have since tried adding a few more and though I can view them easily on my pc, I can only see a file icon with a question mark on it on the Q006, but my original set of pics are still visible. What am I doing wrong? HELP!!!!!!!
kaduku
Sounds like an unrecognized file format.
When you saved it, did you save it as "save a copy" or just "save". On a resize, the latter may have created a photoshop file rather than a jpeg.

Problem is solved! I was saving it as a progressive file, instead of baseline. I guess this really proves that the Q won't accept an 1080p source.

That's great news. It certainly makes sense, since LoA is Sony's crown jewel when it comes to movies that they own the rights to. Add to that the fact that there are few films (if any) more deserving than the High Def format, it should be no surprise that this would be one of the first releases in Blu-Ray!
Schweet.
Hey, Penton, we're here, buddy. We believe you, man. We believe ALL our clients. lol We'll plead your case any time ... but I'm not sure that will get you off the couch.

Seriously, sounds like you are having a great time in France and will see something truly historic when Lance finishes up in Paris.
Cheers

Rob Tomlin,
I saw the LoA clip back in early March on the 006 at a demo prior to buying mine. It was fantastic. They had a split screen from the Blu-Ray they were also demoing with the HD on the right and DVD on the left. Big difference, the HD had excellent detail. It was like going to 20/20 vision.

Guys,
I am making my way over the bumps. I have completed 19 radiation treatments with only 9 left (Mon-Fri). I have started my second week of chemo with two more to go after this one. I have one every four weeks. Each week starts with a full day at the center having six hours of drips and then I am sent home with a pump attached to me until Friday. It gives new meaning to TGIF :D
Mini Dive is being very helpful with toting my pump bag, remember he is very strong. As a treat, I am giving him all the mini candy bars he wants.
Thank GOD Mini-Dive doesn't eat other M&Ms...
And thank God that Big-Dive is on his way to getting well -- hang in there, DD!
Divedude, gosh I think I missed a lot here lately. Looking forward to reading your post of your recovery! My prayers are with you. :)
I have a suggestion. If everyone will submit their best jokes I will post a "Get Well Dive-Dude" page on my Qualia website. Laughter really is the best medicine.
Please forward all submissions via my webpage -- I'm pretty certain every page has a "contact" button from which you can email me. Give me your joke, your name (optional) and location, and your AVS username so that we'll recognize you...

Hi Gang,
Just popping in for a minute while I have a break. This has been a busy travel month for me.
I did finally get to drop by and see Qualia at the New York store last week. The Qualia HD camcorder is now out and on display.
DD, I echo all the sentiments expressed above. My younger brother went through it a few years ago and he's been fine ever since :) We'll have to see if we can get you a bootleg copy of Wedding Crashers to view on your Q006. It's pretty funny!
Take care all and see you again soon.

Very funny indeed!

Has anyone confirmed whether or not the Qualia HD camcorder is any different from the Sony -- besides the fact it has a Qualia logo and -- more than likely -- a higher price tag? I'll be in NYC next week, and may have to check it out...
Joke is en route .... DD hang in there. Be thankful you haven't picked up more expensive online hobbies, like my other flaw, online poker ... :)

Penton-Man 07-19-05, 04:00 PM Folks,
We just got into our hotel so I’ve only got a minute before we have time to run downstairs and get some dinner. I hope the Royal Dog Sitter posts this for me today (Tues. evening).
brt – this is an actual link so I’ll take the liberty to post it here. Perhaps you can add it to your homepage when you get the chance.
To the Bubble blower….plenty of bubbles of hope and two funny stories. The first perhaps only instructors will appreciate (I think divedude in a PADI instructor) the second is more generic. (For lots of bubbles just move your mouse back and forth from line to line.)

Well I gotta tel ya that I'm pretty disappointed, now I don't have HD hooked up yet on the Dish ....thats Thurs. But I tried a few DVDs and they looked terrible / blotchy like. On SD TV the colors seem way too vivid ( I have it set on Pro not vivid) and as you would expect SDTV looks pretty bad. I think then I am bummed about the DVDs most  .....Could it be my cheap Panny? I have it hooked directly to the 006 via composite cables and set to 480i. Maybe I need a better DVD player. I'll bet the HD will look good when I get it up and running. :(

I bet DVDs via a decent DVD player with HDMI output or even component output
would look stunning on your new set even unadjusted out of the box. I have a
Denon DVD-3910 and the output via upconverted 1080i HDMI looks better than
what most broadcasters try to pass off as HD...

While you wait for a Qualia 06 owner to reply I suspect it is your DVD player
and not your display since many report very good picture "right out of the box".
Neo2005 07-19-05, 10:58 PM I think you will prove absolutely correct.
HardDriver 07-19-05, 11:22 PM Neo,
I can't really help you much with settings, but I will say this: my 006 is running on bone stock settings, hooked to a year-and-a-half old Panasonic DMR-E80H via component. It looks really great to me, so I wouldn't worry too much if I was you. It's probably the DVD player. Also, check different SD channels. I've got a Dish Network DVR 942 receiver hooked in over HDMI and some SD channels look HORRIBLE while other SD channels are really, REALLY good. I usually find Speed channel, The Weather Channel, and QVC to be consistently better than the others. Try them out, and don't worry! :)

HardDriver 07-20-05, 08:59 PM Hey guys,
I know this isn't the speaker forum, but I seriously think I'll get some Paradigm Monitor speakers to go along with my Q. I personally really really like them but I haven't heard that many different HT setups...I just don't want to look like I got a Ferrari and put some steel wheels on it, you know? Any simple comments, yay or nay?

DBordello 07-21-05, 01:36 AM Thanks for all of the great responses on my Harmony 880 issue. Sorry for the lack of feedback. I solved my problem very easily, train everybody to point the remote 'close' to the Q. It is more sensitive than i first thought and haven't seen it miss one signal in a long time.
The 880 is a great remote, i highly recommend it.
Divedude, Hope you are feeling better. If you'd like shoot me a PM with your address and I'll get wedding crashers out to ya.
Neo2005 07-21-05, 11:29 AM Thanks for your reply .... My 942 arrived yesterday. Could you share what you set your menu items at for example 480i vs. 480p vs. 1080i etc.
many thanks.
Back in town for the day . . .
Re: Qualia HD Camcorder: I did not see it in action (I only had a few minutes to spend at the store). I did ask what differences, if any, from the Sony Consumer and Professional HD Camcorders and was told the Qualia uses better optics than both of the Sony's.
DD, keep laughing :p I hope you enjoy Wedding Crashers (nice offer DBordello!)

Sure! My HDTV Setup options are "Offair", "1080i", and "16x9". That's really the only configuration options that I can think of which would affect picture quality. Also be sure that you go to "Preferences" and "Guide Display" (option 2) and set the guide to an "extended" mode. I think this option was designed for big screens like ours and it really makes the program guide much more useful!
Neo2005 - what model DVD player and what discs have you tried? DVD's should look really great. Just wait until you get a good HD signal!
Great thread. Question about the future of our beloved Q6. When something is finally output in 1080P, what is the most likely treatment of that signal?
1. The source downrezes it to 720P or 1080I going into the Q.
2. Sony provides an upgrade like the Q004.
3. A workable outboard processer deinterlaces it in the chain.
Neo2005 07-22-05, 07:40 AM HardDriver thanks for the info.
Xrispy I am soooooooooooooo happy with the HD! I got the Dish 942 hooked up and was disappointed with the picture until I realized that I was watching the Yankee game on non-HD. I switched to the TNTHD and Holy S*#^* I was transported to HD heaven. :D :p
Now to get a new DVD player.
Has anyone heard that the SONY 975 is being replaced by something new prior to BluRay?
Do have a question tho .... when you have to watch other than HD ... do you switch from 1080i to 720 or 480 in the menu or leave it on 1080i?

Yeah HD is pretty incredible!!! I've had the set for a little over a month and I'm still blown away by the image quality every time I switch to an HD channel. I leave the receiver on 1080i all the time. Also, watch a variety of different SD channels. Some seem to be compressed a lot more than others (Discovery-owned channels seem to be some of the worst), and some look fantastic.
>Has anyone heard that the SONY 975 is being replaced by something new prior >to BluRay?
Yes, I forgot the model number but I am sure it is on these forums in the DVD section DVD Players Standard. It is less expensive and people wonder if it can be good quality. I do have the 975 and it is great...so far.
I am going to try this. I just got a reader for $7.99 and RiteAid has SanDisk 256 MB Memory Stick Pro Duo for $19.99 after $10 rebate( but only good thru Tomorrow, July 23rd).
Well, I just got my Memory Stick and card reader and put a few images on there which I batch resized to 1920x1080 pixels...
Penton-Man 07-22-05, 03:45 PM Bonjour Monsieurs and mademoiselles,
We are having a gay(in the old fashioned sense of the word) time in Paris. Doing the typical tourist stuff while waiting for Sir Lance and the Discovery train.
The time trial is Saturday. He is always motivated for those so I wouldn’t be surprised if he pulls out a stage win before the final roll out to Paris.
I’ve been a good boy and have only said “Voulez-vous couchez avec moi ce soir” to zee Royal Queen, as if that needs any reiteration Zechman !
Zech – No problem on your salesman representing zee Royal Queen (not that it would ever come to that). But the way I figure it would be great fun. You see when I would be summoned by him for a deposition, I would answer all of his questions with an off-topic aside ( well not really off topic….but indirectly related to his question in a multi-step oblique fashion ala the butterfly flapping its wings in China causes a chain of events resulting in a tornado in Tulsa’s and Motormouth’s(?) region of the country).
This would cause her advocate to become quite unsettled as his orderly world of the critical trait of everything being in its proper pigeon hole space of life would be out of kilter (kind of the same way he feels when he visits the Qualia 006 Owner’s Thread.). His resultant decompensation would eventually result in me winning the case !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To mpsan or whoever originally asked the question – The NS90 is slated to “replace” the NS975V. It’s not out yet and I’m uncertain of its features. MSRP is $200 which begs the question why is it so much cheaper than the NS975V – perhaps no included HDMI cable and with Blu-ray approaching ? Perhaps to undercut the competition ? Je ne sais pas.
Hello sophie (btw – beautiful name!)
“When something is finally output in 1080P”. In my uneducated opinion, when that happens (other than from an outboard processor ala Algolith DragonFly) it will be a looooooong time coming, and by that time our Q 006’s will be obsolete anyway. I’m STILL waiting just to get all my channels in digital rather than some in digital and some in analog from my cable country and do you really think the studio’s will release movies in 1080P ? They might as well just sell us their Masters.
For clarification to others – The Q 006 will not accept a 1080P signal (which it will display) and we still don’t know exactly WHAT it does with a 1080i signal – but it sure looks damn good.
Au revoir.
P.S. To the Royal Dog Sitter – NO teenage parties while we’re away !!

BenDover 07-22-05, 05:24 PM I for one am very curious what the visually perceptible differences might be between feeding a 1080i signal to the Q (or any other set that "displays" 1080p) which then upconverts it to progressive and feeding a display capable of accepting a 1080p input a true 1080p source (ideal comparison, for me at least, would be the 1st gen Q and a hypothetical 2d gen Q that accepts 1080p).
I know the difference in the 480 realm is definitely distinct, but now that we are at the 1920x1080 level, will there be much of a perceptible difference, if any?

I totally agree. I really doubt 95% of the people will be able to notice any difference between a deinterlaced 1080i signal and a native 1080p signal on comparable displays. I may be really naive in thinking this but some poeple talk like the difference between the 2 will be like the difference between 480i and 720p.

Actually, it isn't "upconverting" anything, it is simply "deinterlacing".
Thanks PM...have fun and I may have gotten an "F" in High School French, but I do remember the good words. :) Anyway, that was a long time ago in Hartford. Since then I even learned some Japaneese...just enough to get around.
Anyway, I did not ask about the NS90, I just was saying that there was a new one. My 975 did not come with an HDMI cable, but it is sure looking great! I also wonder why the new price is so low. Have fun...BTW Lance is on DiscoveryHD all the time now but they keep running the same stuff!

[Nitpick]Actually, more like 480i-deinterlaced to-480p vs. native 480p] :D
But even this isn't what I initially posited. My thought is that at such high resolution (1080), will the deinterlacing vs. native be that noticeable or even noticeable at all.

This is an interesting question. I agree that the Qualia is dynamite in its' presentation of 1080I material. That being said, it is also relentless in depicting ANY flaws in source material. If we were conducting an even test of 1080P presented natively vs. 1080I that has been deinterlaced by the Q006, the results would -- I think -- be heavily dependent on the amount of motion, fast pans, etc. in the source material. The more motion content the more I suspect 1080P would hold a significant advantage.
geese_howard 07-22-05, 08:30 PM anyone know where I can buy this TV in toronto?
FilmMixer 07-23-05, 12:09 AM Long time no post...
I just got the ultimate 006 accessory.. my Sony HDR-HC1 HDV HiDef 1080i camcorder!!! I am away from home, but hooked it up via component to a 720p Sammy DLP and it looked stunning!!! From what I understand, you can connect via 1394 to the 006 and control the camera from the remote... I'll let y'all know how that works out...

Honestly, I think the thing that would be the most noticable would not be in picture at all but in sound--as in, better sound sync because there's no video delay at all associated with the deinterlacing process.
Plus, the sound of gamers complaining about 60Hz vs 30Hz will finally quiet down. :p

geese_howard 07-23-05, 01:39 PM does this tv do 1080P thorough HDMI?
The current Qualia 006 uses a .78 chip die, will the new SXRD products using the .61 chip have tighter spacing and even better fill rates due to the reduced size?
I think I read somewhere that Sony is comming out with a 56" version of this set. Anyone have any info on that?
I heard something similar but disregarded it since I'm mostly interested in TVs around 50".
My 006 picture got very dark pretty suddenly today and it seems to be getting darker. Is it possible that the XL5000 lamp is bad after only 2 months of usage?
Appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!
UPDATE: Monday, I spoke with Sony. Tuesday at 8:30 AM, a replacement lamp arrived. Tuesday at 11:00, a local TV repair person arrived to install the lamp. 11:30, the picture looks better than it did when I first received the set a couple of months ago.
The Sony Qualia team is great.

Highly doubtful. If someone didn't mess with your picture settings, you either got a bad lamp or there is a defective part in your Q006. Many of us have had the Q006 for 6 months, and with fairly heavy useage, I haven't read about anyone's picture going dark.

gellis,
Burn out would be very premature, even if you were running it 7X24 after only 2 months, but it is certainly possible there was a defect with the bulb. I am sure you have seen where the manual says it is time to replace the bulb when the picture turns dark.
My suggestion would be to check with Sony or your salesperson. Maybe they will give you a new bulb considering the short burn time on it.

I talked with Sony today. They didn't question my diagnosis of a bad lamp. They seem to be interested in collecting information on the failure to report it to Japan. In any event, I hope that it's the lamp and not something more serious. An increasingly dark picture ...
Has anyone changed the lamp? I wonder how difficult it is. I understand that there is a special wrench needed to remove the screws under the front panel that provides access to the lamp.
I haven't had much luck with 006. My first one was DOA.
BenDover 07-23-05, 11:41 PM Any other Q owners pick up the Silicon Optix HQV Benchmark DVD? I just ran it using my Denon 3910 to the Q via HDMI and to my untrained eye, the Q passed all tests. Some of the cadence testing is difficult to follow on my part, but it seems like the Q did well there as well.
It would be interesting to see if the results would improve using the DragonFly/Mosquito combo.
WOW...tried the slide show with a fade! You people were correct...it is a great feature!
Zechman 07-24-05, 12:10 PM does this tv do 1080P thorough HDMI?
No, it does not accept 1080p at any frame rate.

I guess that remains to be seen. The fill rate could be worse on the smaller chips, too, if the inter-pixel spacing is not any tighter, but the pixels are smaller. I doubt that will be the case, but until we see the new smaller SXRD chips in action, we won't know for sure.

Neo2005 07-24-05, 04:34 PM Well...................... I was really excited about watching my very first HD F1 race.....then on my HD Dish channel 9483 ( CBSHD) on comes this SD like pic with two gray side bars. So I switched to Channel 243 CBS and although I had black side bars it was pretty much the same SD PQ as the advertised CBSHD. Anybody get the race in full screen and in true HD?
Does Speedvision broadcast F1 in HD?
Bummed
Rob Tomlin 07-24-05, 05:36 PM I don't think the F1 race was broadcast in HD. And I don't think it is up to CBS.
Unfortunately, Neo, I don't think US F1 fans can get ANY of the races in HighDef. You just gotta love Bernie Eccelstone; the guy's really doing all he can to make F1 a colossal success in the US. I think you can get the races in Enhanced Definition or HighDef in the EU -- if you fork over the extra dough for "BernieVision".
I'm just very happy to not have been at the US Grand Prix; my wife was pushing me to go (and take her along) but I couldn't make that date work for me.

I'm a huge F1 fan as well, Neo (I think it's a fairly common 006 owner trait :)) but I don't think any of the races are even filmed with HD equipment. Europe doesn't have HD in any form, last I heard.
CBSHD really sucks though - they put the gray bars on the side of everything SD and label it as "(HD)" in the program guide description. The only shows that are actually in HD are listed here (http://www.cbs.com/info/hdtv/index.php). All those shows suck IMHO, but it's fun to switch back and forth between an SD CBS channel broadcast to see just how great HDTV really is.

I noticed the F1 page on your most excellent website, brt3. Thanks for all the work you put into that - it really helped me in making the decision to buy one. I did happen to be at the USGP, however, and it was awful. :(

Thanks for the feedback! Let me get your (OT) opinion on the USGP. On TV the commentators mentioned how disgraceful the fans behaviour was, just because a few (a very few, I think) threw things onto the track. I've been to see F1 races in Monaco and England and, IMHO, if they attempted a stunt like that the Germans, Italians, Brits, etc., would more than likely start a very nasty riot. What did you think, HardDriver, having been a witness to the debacle?
Neo2005 07-24-05, 08:48 PM My home is in Geneva, NY ....40 miles North of Watkins Glen race track. Unfortunately I am a late life fan and never attended a F1 @ "The Glen". I was @ Montreal this year and loved it. We should coordinate a 006 F1 get together at a race next. year.

(I actually just visited Monaco for the first time a few weeks ago...one of my favorite places on earth!!) Anyway, I watched the race on TV the next Friday and they only showed a fraction of the thrown debris. I was sitting above the first turn on the front row (awesome seats) and pretty much every 2 laps resulted in another Fosters can getting chucked onto the track. There was also a lot of stuff that didn't make it onto the track or was blocked by the fence. One idiot even threw one of those rentable chair backs. It went about 20 feet into the grass... But you know what? If you looked, the fans who watch every race, traveled hundreds of miles, and have a real passion for the sport were not causing any problems. It was mostly the "locals" who heard there was a race at the speedway and came to get drunk. They won't be back next year and for that I'm glad...maybe I can go the next year without spotting a Dale Earnhartd Jr. t-shirt! :p

NEC SELECTS THE REALTA HQV™ VIDEO PROCESSOR TO BRING QUALITY VIDEO TO PLASMAS AND PROJECTORS
San Jose, CA—(June 8, 2005)—NEC Solutions America, Inc. has partnered with Silicon Optix to bring award-winning HQV™ processing powered by Teranex to NEC plasmas and projectors. The new NEC TheaterSync™ external video processing unit will seamlessly connect to its displays for outstanding video performance.
The Silicon Optix/Teranex born HQV technology meets the demands of the high-performance display market by utilizing true 10-bit video processing, full four-field motion adaptive video deinterlacing for both standard definition and high definition signals, temporal-recursive noise reduction, automatic multi-cadence detection, and pixel-based detail enhancement. The scaling engine inside the Realta uses as many as 1024 taps and can scale all resolutions up to QXGA. The Realta implements the same video processing power—1 trillion operations per second— as the famous $60,000 Teranex Xantus box.
TheaterSync™ will offer a complete array of connectivity, including all SD, HD, and PC signals over standard analog, DVI, and HDMI inputs. Additionally, TheaterSync™ will incorporate the newest HQV algorithm, CNR™ (CODEC Noise Reduction), to reduce the artifacts caused by MPEG and other CODEC compression methodologies.
The Realta HQV processor has already received numerous awards and accolades, , including the “Best of Innovations” award for the Embedded Technologies category at the 2005 Consumer Electronics Show, “Most Promising New Technology” and “Most Exciting New Company” from The Perfect Vision, “Best Buzz” of CEDIA from Insight Media, AVGuide Monthly’s “Best Product Overall,” Red Herring’s “Top 100 Innovators” award, Fred Kahn’s “Silver Best of CES” award, and most recently “Best Picture of the Show” at the Home Entertainment 2005 Show in New York City, from Tom Norton of UltimateAVmag.com.
To learn more about Realta HQV, go to www.hqv.com
TheaterSync™ will be available in Fall 2005. Pricing is TBD
Rob Tomlin 07-26-05, 11:07 AM ^ Interesting info, but how is it relevant to a Qualia 006 Owner's Thread?
I agree Rob, that belongs in the plasma and projector forums.
Nothing relevant to the Qualia or RPTV.
cajieboy 07-26-05, 01:28 PM I agree Rob, that belongs in the plasma and projector forums.

Probably not on the Qualia 006 thread, but definitely belongs on RPTV Forum. Why? Because once this type of video processing upgrade starts to appear on projectors and plasma TV's, you can bet the farm it will easily migrate to RPTV.
^ Interesting info, but how is it relevant to a Qualia 006 Owner's Thread?
Since it's an external processor -- and many of us are waiting for the Algolith "Bug" combo -- I think it's an interesting article. What's also intriguing is the article's mention of CNR, which (though impossible to tell from a press release) sounds a lot like what the Mosquito does. Whether or not this product will be proprietary for NEC products remains to be seen...
There are several threads on the HQV on the video processors forum. Recommended reading if anyone is interested in possibly using an external processor with the 006. The Algolith Mosquito and Dragonfly ("bug") combo will be the first standalone processor (the Dragonfly, that is, the Mosquito is out) with the HQV, shipping soon I believe. August or some such, so it's probably worth staying tuned for the reviews. AVS has a special on the combo.
Cheers
BenDover 07-26-05, 02:28 PM It is relevant to this thread (IMHO) since, as already stated by other owners, many are awaiting the release of the Silicon Optix product(s) using the Realta HQV video processor to help tame the Qualia's penchant for mercilessly bringing out the defects in much of the presently available non-HD material.
Penton-Man 07-26-05, 03:33 PM Bonjour Mes Amis (my friends),
Well I’ve recovered from my hangover incurred while celebrating at a post-race party at the Ritz and can now think somewhat coherently.
We’re about to depart Gay Paris for bloody England to take in a couple of bloody football matches and do some bloody shopping. Bloody Good !
I’m posting this (hopefully via the Royal Dog Sitter) in reference to the current video processor discussion (I hope it’s current, I could never figure out the damn time thing on AVS forum).
If I recall correctly, I think that Joel and jp2 may have alluded to this in the past ? Anyway, here’s my 2 francs………..
I have a gut feeling that the noise reduction in the Mosquito is superior to that in the Dragonfly, sooooo, what it may come down to in the decision tree for the potential purchase of the bug “combo” IS whether the deinterlacing and scaling with the Dragonfly outputting 1080i “better” than the video processor in the 006 handling these same chores?
I would venture a guess that it IS…. which begs the question, IS it slightly, moderately, or significantly better ?
It is my sincere hope that brt and other early adopters simply first hook up the Mosquito bug with all its bells and whistles turned on to the 006 to watch some different source material and then subsequently hook up the bugs in combo (Mosquito and Dragonfly together) to the 006 to watch the same source material to achieve some sort of A/B testing to answer the above queries.

Neo2005 07-26-05, 06:42 PM  Because we are engaged in an ongoing discussion concerning possible PQ improvement and there are those of us who are considering purchasing a stand alone processor to provide said improvements, I deemed it not only pertinent to our 006 owners thread but my duty to all to call attention to perhaps an alternative processor. Perhaps it should also be included in other threads, but this happens to be the one I am most involved with. Feel free to cut and paste at will. Also it may be a decent idea for someone to telephone to the contact listed and post what data he may offer.
I'm sure that those that saw fit to question my post have contributed valuable information within this forum but forgive me for not remembering. ;)
HardDriver 07-27-05, 12:49 AM Anyone else out there controlling their Q with the Logitech Harmony 880 (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/detailsharmony/US/EN,CRID=2084,CONTENTID=9933)? Mine just arrived today and oh my gosh - it is so cool!!!
Curt Anderson 07-27-05, 02:20 AM Hi, I am a prospective Qualia 006 Buyer. I am looking to buy one in the next month.
I am currently in NW Arizona at my vacation house, and will be visiting the Qualia store in Vegas to check it out. But from what i've been reading online my mind is pretty much set. This is the TV for me.
When I do decide to buy it the TV is going to be delivered to my apartment in San Francisco.
My options currently right now are to actually buy it in store for 12,999 As I believe, or online at a retailer like Digital craze ($10,799.99 + Airfreight Express 599.99) (Pricegrabber Best Price 11,399.98)
Tommorow I am also going to call 1-877-qualia3, and see what other retailers they can point me to, possibly in the bay area (for cheaper shipping/delivery?)
I was wondering if any of you can vouch for any of these other sources. The main concerns I have are.
#1 Would I be taken care of if the item came damaged or became damaged after a few months.
#2 How long would delivery take? Can you blame me for bein impatient.
#3 What about the Accompanying stand, it's about 1,600 can I buy that at digitalcraze? Would it be cheaper?
If you know any other good retailers or other things to consider, please let me know?
1. You should be OK if you use a local Bay Area retailer. Otherwise I'd be extremely careful. This set is a monster, and delivery and setup are pretty challenging. Overall, the Qualia stores have done a pretty good job handling this. Go to the first page on this thread for some important info to ensure a safe delivery.
3. The stand is worth every penny. It interlocks with the base of the set so that the entire assembly is like one solid piece. Since you're in earthquake country I'd recommend using the factory stand...

Do you know of any good retailers that carry it off hand? (I'm going to call sony tommorow to check for sure)
Also. The TV is huge, and I live on the 11th floor, and would need to come via the stairs Do you think they'll be up to it? (I certainly hope so)
And yes, that stand is a beauty and I'll definately be getting it. I was just wondering that since Its cheaper from a 3rd party reseller for the Set, if it would also be marginally cheaper for the stand.
Thanks for the quick reply, any other helpful info would be great.

From date of order (direct from Sony), about 2 weeks for me! :)

Magnolia Hi-Fi carries them, also 3deye ordered his from a local Sony dealer. You will need to use a service elevator to deliver this monster tv to your place.
Just wanted to get post #6666...

Gah. My current 55' Tantus Just barely fit in the buildings elevator. There is no larger service elevator in my building. I would certainly like to have assurances from the delivery company that they could manage a stair endeavor.
I've had my Sofa up the 11 flights, but this 300+ lb $10,000 monster has me scared.

I would really be concerned. If the stairs is the only way to go and there is no space where the movers can lay it down and rest. I could only suggest more movers so that it can be brought up the stairs in one motion. Good luck!

Yah the stairwell is pretty huge and every flight there would be a rest area. If it took them 8 hours And it arrived in tact I'd be happy. I'll definately be sure I can have it properly delivered before I plunk down the cash for this. If I cant, I guess I'll have to think about plasma. :(

This sounds like a job for the Sony/Qualia Cierge. This should redefine customer service if Sony has the guts to pull it off. A very good chance to make a statement about this set and redefine an appropriate level of customer service...

Absolutely, I really want to go with this set but if I'm unable to I'd certainly be willing to go for a different alternative.
I'll give them a call probably tommorow or the day after, (busy). And let you guys know.

If the passenger elevator is larger, is there much chance that the building manager will allow you to take it up in that??

Absolutely, your forgiven.

Yeah people use the passenger elevator all the time. (For furniture, small sofas, etc) IT fits about 8 people. And it barely fit my 55 In Tantus.
Its not terrible big and I dont have the dimensions but I would say its 7 ft tall. 4x5.5-6.5 feet.
I would need accurate dimensions though. (Im not there so I cant go measure)
Curt
Have you considered moving?? ;-)

Nice Neo,
Looks like a fairly large room. What is your viewing distance? And that Corvette hood really adds to the Q006! :)
Neo2005 07-27-05, 01:28 PM Just about 11 feet, but that feels right with this display (not too close). Of course with SDTV 20 feet would be better.

I agree, I have about 12 feet and feel that a little closer would give me a better a viewing experience.
Yes, I use the 880. Works great, no problems with it at all controlling the 006.
Cheers
BenDover 07-27-05, 02:38 PM Nice setup Neo...what speakers do you have again? The center channel looks sweet perched up there and angled down!
I think that will be my next toy. I had to wait 'til my center speaker was mounted on the wall.
JOEL...it is being done now as I type this. Pics to follow and DiamondTech wants one.
Back to our regular thread...I hope the 880 will change inputs as the Q is turned on...like I assume we could go to Video X almost as soon as the Q turns on. Then I need to control a Meridian, and RPTV, and the Sony 975.
Has the 880 price come down yet?
Anyone else out there controlling their Q with the Logitech Harmony 880 (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/detailsharmony/US/EN,CRID=2084,CONTENTID=9933)? Mine just arrived today and oh my gosh - it is so cool!!!
In setup, you tell the 880 program what inputs you have your sources on, and when you click on the "watch TV" or "watch DVD" or whatever button on the initial screen, the TV turns on and switches to that input. Works great. You just have to remember to turn the TV off by using the off button on the remote.
Neo2005 07-27-05, 03:27 PM 7.1 / Speakers are from PSB. Fronts are Image T55/ center is Image C60 /sides and rears are Image B15/ Sub is SubSonic 6i.
Curt.............................You should be able to get 15% off the TV at any B&M store. I know in Chicago ************** did this with NO problem
Great, so they must have builtin delays. It will be good to not have to cycle thru the inputs!

Zechman 07-27-05, 05:29 PM Great, so they must have builtin delays. It will be good to not have to cycle thru the inputs!
Actually, there's no delay necessary.
If the Qualia is turned off, and you send it one of the codes for direct selection of one of the inputs, it will power up and go to that input. No "ON" code is required, and thus no delay needed between them. Pretty slick, huh?
I expect the Harmony database knows this already, which is why it works without any problems for the 2-3 owners here (myself not included, BTW) who already use it.
EDIT:
OOPS!
Disregard what I wrote before. The Qualia DOES NOT power up when it receives a remote code that directly selects an input.
It appears that I had accidentally fooled myself in the programming of my Pronto remote. I had set all the soft-buttons for selecting inputs with macros that actually sent the power-on code, then sent the discrete input selection code. Thus when I pressed a button that I thought just sent an input-select code, the set powered up.
Another reason that I fooled myself here is that my Sony AV amplifier (STR-DA5000ES) does work that way--if you send an input select code when it's off it also powers up before going to that input. So it seemed plausible that the Sony TV would work the same way.
So I apologize if I had led anyone astray with bad information. Here's a (hopefully) useful tip to make up for it:
You can get the same effect with no delay by constructing a macro this way:
1) Select input
2) Power on
3) Delay (0.4 seconds seems to be long enough)
4) Select input again
If the set is already on, it goes to the input immediately and the following codes have no effect. If the set is off, the first code has no effect, but then the follow-up codes turn on the set and select the input after the appropriate delay.

Tele-TV 07-27-05, 06:15 PM Hi guys,
This is my first post to the Qualia thread (did a search but could not find my answer). I'm waiting for the SXRD [60"] (because I can't afford the Qualia). I have a question about the Video Input LABELING Feature. Is it pre-determined "words" (DVD, Sat, etc.) like my most Sony TV's are, or is more customizable like Mits DLP's? Where you can enter up to seven characters (letters?). Thanks in ADVANCE.

DBordello 07-27-05, 06:16 PM I have been using the 880 for a couple of weeks with the Qualia. When turning the system on I have never seen the input on the Qualia change. It is done well before the screen powers up. What Zechman makes sense. Yes, pretty slick.
When changing between "Watch TiVo" and "Watch DVD" the Qualia changes inputs perfectly. No scrolling, the harmony knows the discrete code.

Neo2005 07-27-05, 06:26 PM Does anyone have any of the info (poop) on the Bias lighting "home brew" from Home Depot. I know it was covered about 200 pages ago but never kept the info, now my 006 is here and I'd like to add the bias lighting.
Great to hear. Will look into the 880 now.
Just got the center shelf mounted. Will take a pic. This is the big B&W, too

Tele-TV,
The input labels are all predetermined choices; you'd think Sony would offer the customization feature...

I only use two inputs, 'Video 6' and 'Video 7' ... don't really care what it is called on the Qualia; I customize what it is called on my Harmony 880 thought :D
OK, I will try to post the pic.
This is our DiamondCase Theater Tech TT400. They also built a matching Center channel shelf for the Big and Heavy B&W center. The room is well lit now as it is Hot, Sunny, and Bright! Pic is way better at night, of course.

mpsan...move that sub out from that corner...man you have it jammed in there :)
Neo2005 07-27-05, 07:58 PM mpsan great looking 006 setup, Is that top shelf attached to the stand or the wall? I also humbley suggest that you place your sub next to the LF as opposed to the corner... less of a boom.
Thank you. Yes, I may move the sub out but it is not boomy I had it there to get it out of the way until the shelf was mounted.

Shelf was made and stained by DiamondCase at the time I had them build my Stand. Perfect match and same trim. They did do a great job.
It is attached to the wall into 3 studs.
Plan to move sub out and to the right a little.

Neo2005 07-30-05, 12:48 PM Concerning Imputs on the 006, I went into the menu and did the "skip" for the imputs not being used but when I manually switch there is an imput that is still active "C6 / No signal". I cannot find this listed within the menu in order to "skip". Any advice?
Thanks!
Yup, I get that too and I believe it is the direct input for the 006's ATSC Tuner.
I wish I could turn it off too. Maybe a Harmony 880 will resolve this? :D

Anyway, I need some help, fellow Qualians. Do any of you know where I can find a nice-looking, freestanding cabinet that will hold an 006? I'm looking for something like this (http://www.roomstogo.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=showItem&ipac_id=8533). I've searched all over the Internet and local furniture stores, but everything has turned up dry and I'm fearful of a custom cabinet maker (they all do kitchen cabinet, built-in stuff which I don't want). Do any of you know of any such furniture?
I looked everywhere also. Really liked ImageCrafters entertainment units. The problem is that none of these units or any others I looked at had a "hole" for the tv that would be 80"+ wide. I will be keeping the speakers attached so I want 85" wide. Nothing came close.
I am having one built by a cabinet maker...
I hope you have better luck than me!
Try Diamondcase design. Their Theater Tech TT400 fits the Q.
I have a picture a few posts up on the forum...post 6696 I believe.

Hard to say since it really depends on your definition of optical path. At some point, I have to believe, that between the screen and the "projector" there is open, unsealed space. That would mean that the "light engine", if you will, would likely have an exposed lens surface through which the image is projected onto the screen. Therefore, my guess would be that at a minimum, the interior surface of the screen and one exposed surface of the lens would be susceptible to pet hairs and possibly smoke (if smoke particulate can deposit itself on those surfaces).
Looks like in addition to a Home-Depot backlight you might want to retrofit your Q with a HEPA filter :D

Still offering up my prayers for your complete and speedy recovery!
I received this email message from my Cierge today.
Hey there!
Great news! As a Cierge member I am thrilled to let you know about Sony's new TV fall line-up before these models hit the retail stores and before most have even heard of them. Sony has incorporated its award-winning technology, like SXRD which boasts exceptional picture quality, into unbelievable lower price points. I wanted to share these exciting TV introductions in advance to allow you the opportunity to pre-order any of the models listed below. There are a lot of new models to choose from so feel free to call me if you need help choosing the model that best suits your needs. Given the lower price points, inventory will be tight so contact me soon so that we can quickly secure whatever model you like.
Here are three of my favorite TVs that are destined to become hot sellers:
- KLV40XBR1 (Stunning 40" XBR LCD Flat Panel TV) for only $3,499.99
- 50" and 60" Grand Wegas with SXRD technology (this is the technology used in the 70" Qualia which was hailed as the 'best rear projection television ever!!!' ). These TVs will ship in September. 60" (KDSR60XBR1) - $4,999 and 50" (KDSR50XBR1)- $3,999.
Enjoy!
All the best and talk with you soon!

She probably won't be able to answer any questions, much less technical ones. When I was buying the Q last January, I also asked her some questions and she didn't know much besides the price. I am sure though that they will incorporate the twin view feature. I am also excited about these upcoming models and might buy a 50" as a replacement for my bedroom tv. :)

Kaduku,
Pump her for as much info as possible, and get back to us! :D
See if you can confirm that the XS shell is indeed part of the new SXRD Grand Wegas. I am sure it is, but more corroboration would be helpful.

I am sure you know all the pertinent questions to ask, so I will trouble you no further.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks!

I actually don't have any questions for her, especially since I already have the Q006, but I will gladly forward her email address to you if you have specific questions for her. After seeing what the Q can do, I will buy sight unseen again. PM me if you need that email address.
Also that pic you posted of the new Wega looks awesome.

They did for me and all the other first wavers, and they base it on you local sales tax :)
Looks like in addition to a Home-Depot backlight you might want to retrofit your Q with a HEPA filter
Thanks BenDover. HEPA Q mod. Time to break out the Dremel! LOL

Generally, if the company has a business presence in that state, they charge sales tax. So even though Dell, for example, is in Tx I get charged tax because they have stores in Ca.
There's a new rave review of the Q006 over at http://www.avrev.com/equip/sonyqualia006/
check it out.

I think in CA, you pay CA Sales Tax on all internet purchases regardless of where the company is actually located.

False.
cajieboy 08-03-05, 06:19 PM OK, my bad. I was quoting from a moderator's post on the Plasma Forum. As for my home state, Florida, I was recently sent a Tax Bill for some furniture I had purchased online in High Point, NC. I paid, promptly..:D
paulbf1 08-03-05, 06:26 PM False.
Actually, semi-false :D
When you file a state income tax return, they ask you how much you purchased on the internet that you didn't pay taxes on. They then add the calculated tax to your bill, which is very thoughtful of them

Really? You're kidding!
I don't remember seeing this on my State tax form.
divedude 08-03-05, 08:41 PM Hey DD, haven't heard from you or mini in some time...hope everything is going well.
Still offering up my prayers for your complete and speedy recovery!
BenDover,
According to the Doctors I am doing remarkably well. The tumor is where my esophagus meets the stomach and the radiation has done a good job of burning the lining of both away. So I am on a liquid diet for a couple of more weeks. Many people need a feeding tube to get nutrients. I have been able to get Boost and pudding down with the help of a Lidocaine syrup and Vicodin. Even water burns. I have only lost 9 lbs. since starting this, so that is very good. I was in good shape and health before starting, so that helped.
Thanks to everyone for all the good wishes :D
Mini Dive has been doing a great job as a Nurse, helping to keep me on schedule with my meds. ;)

Great news, DD! Hang in there -- we're all thinking of you. Please make sure that Mini-Dive doesn't get hooked on Vicodin (or equivalent). We must keep this thread clear of scandal at any cost...
DD - very nice to hear!! :)

DD - keep it going! I hope your 006 doesn't qualify as heavy machinery. If so, ignore that pesky warning on your med labels!

brt3,
I think Mini Dive already got into the Vicodin. He is wanting to take my temp with an ear thermometer, but he keeps insisting I bend over

Without reading this 225 page thread, does anyone recall the the bulb replacement cost and the estimated hours it is expected to last??
Neo2005 08-05-05, 09:15 AM Still learning about my set it seems .... that review mentioned a bulb setting ... where should it be set for best PQ and how.
thanks :)

The Qualia 006's bulb is the XL5000, priced at about $300. You can order it from Sony Parts at 800-488-SONY (7669), although it doesn't appear on the Sony Parts website (http://servicesales.sel.sony.com/web/index.jsp). For those who buy through the Qualia stores in NY or LV, they get one free bulb replacement, although no one has yet posted that they've done this.
Without digging REALLY deep, I believe nhey was the first to order one, and he posted the information (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5151397&&#post5151397).
Also, IIRC, divedude bought a replacement bulb before taking delivery of his Qualia. Unfortunately, that was around the time of the great race both towards and away from page 300 (another great legend of the thread--and just prior to the AVS switch from 20 posts per page to 30, for those who are paying attention and didn't use the Penton-Man method of getting through math classes), where a lot of posts got deleted, so no links, except a leftover off-hand reference to it by Penton-Man (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5361338&&#post5361338).*
On brt3's Qualia website (http://raythompson.us/), he lists two (http://www.betterlamps.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=10) links (http://www.ercservice.com/lamps/sonylamps/XL5000.html) to other suppliers, but if you look closely you can see that they are actually the same company. (brt3: Have you ever noticed this?)
[EDIT: Well, speak of the devil . . . looks like he swooped in and posted while I was typing all this up.]
I don't think there was any consensus on expected bulb life, let alone official word from Sony. It's just the sort of information they don't like to publish, and there is often confusion with the Qualia 004 projector's Xenon bulb, which has a much lower life-span than the Qualia 006's 200W UHP bulb.
jb007: Some information about the replacement bulb would be good material for Post #1.

* . . . and believe me, searching though Penton-Man's posts is no small task, even for one so skilled in the art as your humble thread historian!

:D "He who types first laughs the loudest"... Or something like that...
Thanks for the heads up; in my zealous quest to post as much pertinent info as possible I missed that point.

The fun never stops here in the Qualia 006 Owner's Thread!
I just searched through 6700+ posts for information that I already know has been deleted, and brt3 apologizes to me for being overly zealous . . . .
